- 0:07Chicago Cubs faced the Pittsburgh Pirates for a Sunday doubleheader at Forbes Field on June 28th, 1970.
- 0:13The Cubs were optimistic under manager Leo DeRocher, which after decades as a sub-500 team were finally on the rise, having finished in second place in 1969.
- 0:23The Pirates were coached again by Danny Murtaug, who had managed the team several years earlier before moving up to their front office.
- 0:29Despite aging stars like Clemente and Masgrowski, the 1970 Pirates had a solid core of youngsters like Stargell, Al Oliver, Dave Cash, and Doc Ellis that would lead the franchise into a lot of success through the 1970s.
- 0:42This audio recording is from Game 2 of the Doubleheader, from the Pittsburgh Radio broadcast featuring announcers Bob Prince, Nellie King, and Gene Osborne.
- 1:12The game is now on the Cubs, and the final professional Pittsburgh Pirate baseball game will be played in Forbes Field after 61 years.

- 2:11Both clubs have come back to the Nugouts.
- 2:14The batting order for the Chicago Cubs, the battering Milt Pappas on the mound, and J.C. Martin behind the plate.
- 2:23For the Chicago Cubs, leading off and playing a shortstop will be Don Kessinger.
- 2:28Kessinger at short.
- 2:30Hitting second and playing at second base will be Paul Popovich.
- 2:34Popovich at second.
- 2:36Batting third and in left field, Billy Williams. Williams in left.
- 2:41Batting fourth and at first base, Jim Hickman. Hickman at first.
- 2:45Hitting fifth and at third base, Ron Santo. Santo at third.
- 2:50Batting sixth and in right field, Johnny Callison. Callison in right.
- 2:56Hitting seventh and playing in center field will be Cleon James. Cleon James in center.
- 3:02Hitting eighth and doing the catching will be J.C. Martin. Martin catching.
- 3:06And batting ninth and doing the pitching will be the veteran right-hander, Milt Pappas.
- 3:10He will be making his first start.
- 3:12This coming to Chicago from Atlanta.
- 3:16And for the Bucks, who get a fine ovation now as they come out of the Nugouts and head on to the field.
- 3:24Leading off and playing in center field will be Maddie Halleux.
- 3:28Batting second, the third baseman, Richie Hefner.
- 3:32Hitting third and in right field will be Al Oliver.
- 3:37Batting fourth and in left field, Willie Scarchill.
- 3:41Batting fifth and at first base, Bobby Robertson.
- 3:46Hitting sixth, the shortstop will be Gene Alley.
- 3:50Batting seventh and doing the catching will be Jerry May.
- 3:55Hitting eighth, the second baseman will be Bill Mazurowski.
- 4:00And batting ninth and doing the pitching will be Jim Nelson.
- 4:06Nelson comes into the ball game with a record of two and nothing.
- 4:11By virtue of the victory in the first game of a double header, a real friller here.
- 4:18The Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates are divided by another full game.
- 4:25It seems that as of right now, the Cubs lead them by a game and a half.
- 4:31So that victory string was a big one.
- 4:34It's extended to six. It's the longest winning streak for the Bucks this year.
- 4:38For the Cubbies now, they have lost nine in a row.
- 4:42Nelson, who has turned everything around.
- 4:45Last Monday night in the second game of the double header,
- 4:49will toe the pitching rubber for this one this afternoon, Nelly.
- 4:53Well, he sure did and a real gutty performance.
- 4:56Just a kind of a fellow that has the same attitude as Bob Moot.
- 5:00I don't think he's overwhelmed with victory and he's not saddened by any kind of defeat or bad performance.
- 5:05He's kind of even tempered.
- 5:07And Steve Blass put it pretty well last night.
- 5:09We're out at Greengate Mall and he's talking about Jim Nelson.
- 5:13He said he's the kind of a guy that you can hit with everything you've got.
- 5:17You knock him down and he just keeps coming back.
- 5:19He doesn't know what he's with.
- 5:21And it's a kind of intangible.
- 5:23You cannot scout for it, but really great pitches and I think great athletes have.
- 5:27And I think this guy can be one of them.
- 5:30He doesn't have an overpowering fastball,
- 5:32but he's got that good palm ball that sets up the fastball good
- 5:36and he challenges hitters from the time he walks in and around until he gets out.
- 5:40Bob, we have nine innings to go and hopefully the Cubs will bow again to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 5:46But as you come on for the start of this game,
- 5:50there must be a little sadness in one Robert Prince after all these years.
- 5:56Maggie, Gene, Nellie, hello again everybody.
- 5:58There's more than a little sadness.
- 6:00It's a tremendous overpowering amount of grief in a sense.
- 6:05It's one of the real tough things to do because I realize this is where I received my start.
- 6:11In the late Rosie Rosewell I've seen so many wonderful and great thrills.
- 6:15And to know now that I have approached the final, absolutely totally final end of this ballpark
- 6:25is something that's like losing a dear loved one not quite as bad when you expect them to pass away.
- 6:31So when it doesn't happen, you're still on grief rips.
- 6:36All right, Kessinger in at 289, one home and an 18 runs batted in.
- 6:40Coaching in third is Phoenix Lowry over to first, Julian Alpotano, Jimmy Nelson 2-0 on the air.
- 6:48Now Nelson works and the palm ball is hit foul by the first 0-2.
- 6:56The Buccos won the front game 3-2 and that's now history.
- 7:02The bat is broken and Kessinger needs a new wedge.
- 7:08I just had the pleasure of being on television in the Chicago area with Jack Brickhouse,
- 7:12the veteran Chicago caster.
- 7:14I've had the pleasure of working several All-Star games and the veteran voice of the Cubs.
- 7:21And we got kind of nostalgic because he and I both had some fine memories of this ballpark
- 7:26and working here in an All-Star game together and elsewhere.
- 7:35But that's something.
- 7:38This is the end of the old lady.
- 7:41Ball outside, 1-2.
- 7:44And the horse, our Nicky, here, the ground keeper par excellence, Krusty Fitzberg,
- 7:51and everything will sometime be over here watching it go.
- 7:54There's a face hit to left by Kessinger.
- 7:57Gooped up by Sturgill, he goes to the opposite field off Nelson's palm ball.
- 8:04Significantly Chicago's Cubs who open here close here,
- 8:08but their opening victory 1909 was by a score of 3-2.
- 8:16We had two close games on the series yesterday afternoon and the first one today, Bob.
- 8:22Yep, and the score in game one was 3-2, I would.
- 8:26So we paid them back.
- 8:27I'd like to do it again, 3-2, and let them know we were any minute.
- 8:30Throw over to first base, we're Bobby Robertson.
- 8:32Grab the ball, Kessinger's back.
- 8:34There's Paul Popovich in second baseman, 2-63, three homers in ten runs batted in.
- 8:40Sturgill, DeLue, and Oliver, the outfield.
- 8:42Hebner, Alley, Mazarovski, Robertson, the infield.
- 8:44Let's throw to first base, Kessinger just does scramble back.
- 8:52Left hand batting Paul Popovich.
- 8:58Jim Nelson checks it first, delivers.
- 9:01Swing him up outtips, strike one.
- 9:03He plays Jerry May.
- 9:05He walked to drive in a big run in the late stages of the ball game.
- 9:12And then Justy got in some trouble and Luke Walker came in striking out banks and
- 9:17running out of batter and it was all over, 3-2 with the bases loaded.
- 9:21There's a ball hit off the right side, diving mass can't get it.
- 9:24It's going to be on in for a base hit and the right center, Kessinger's on his way into third.
- 9:28And so we now have runners in first and third with nobody out.
- 9:35And the batter will be the left fielder Billy Williams at 2-9-0, 19 homers and 61 runs batted in.
- 9:46And third, playing left field, number 26, Billy Williams.
- 9:56And so we're on the outfield here now to Billy Williams.
- 10:00Billy in the front game, one for four.
- 10:03Popovich just playing in this game, did not appear in the first game.
- 10:06There's a drive into the gap in the right center, the ref and Nelson in a hurry.
- 10:10That'll drive in one run.
- 10:11Luke fires the ball into Mazarosti, first and third occupied and we're up with action in our both in Orlando, Pennsylvania.
- 10:25Out of batter is Jim Hickman who is one for three in the first game.
- 10:30He's batting 331, 18 homers, 51 runs batted in.
- 10:38So the Cubs take a lead here and threaten to pop it open if they can.
- 10:43Orlando, Pennsylvania shouldn't take a lot of loosening up as he was up several times in the first game.
- 10:49But you'll have to stop Chicago here if they possibly can without further damage.
- 10:55First and third occupied and nobody out.
- 11:00The pitch, palm ball up high, one ball and no strikes.
- 11:07Kessinger opened up with a two-strike single through the gap in left.
- 11:11Popovich then single into right center and Williams did likewise, driving Kessinger home and putting Paul Popovich to third.
- 11:18Palm ball, strike is called, one and one, Hickman checking off.
- 11:27One ball and one strike.
- 11:37Fast ball into the dirt, blocked down nicely by Jerry May, one and two and one.
- 11:50Two balls, one strike.
- 11:55Jimmy Nelson in trouble.
- 11:58The right-hand batting Hickman the pitch, just inside and it's three and one.
- 12:07Chicago leading here one and nothing in the second and the final game.
- 12:13Between these two teams are pirates or anybody at force.
- 12:17Three balls and a strike.
- 12:23Right-hand batting Jim Hickman, now a throw over to first base and the batter or the runner there, Williams, is back.
- 12:31Three balls, one strike.
- 12:34Outfield around to the left, Don Hickman.
- 12:37Now the look by Nelson, three-one pitch and it's driven deep to left hooking and it's going to be foul.
- 12:51So we have a 3-2 count and we'll watch Williams now.
- 13:02Popovich is third and Williams is first.
- 13:05Shots lead, one nothing.
- 13:07We're in the top half of the first of game two.
- 13:09Pirates won the first game three to two before a sellout-thrown standing room only crowd.
- 13:17And the pitch.
- 13:18There's the palm ball, hit towards third, Hefner gets it, holds the runner there.
- 13:21They come to the plate now and they got the run in the mouth as Nelson interferes.
- 13:25Now Hefner's back down and they got a double play.
- 13:29Now DeRocchi's going to argue for interference on the part of Nelson.
- 13:35I called interference on the part of Nelson but I don't know whether or not the umpire feels I've had anything to do with a double play.
- 13:45We're going to have to wait and see.
- 13:48Now what happened was the ball was hit by Hefner.
- 13:50Down to Hefner.
- 13:52Hefner came up with it and held the runner Popovich for a moment.
- 13:56Then he threw the second base, that's towards Williams by four.
- 14:01Mazz came home with the ball and as Popovich was coming down the line at third,
- 14:06he was bumped by Nelson coming across the cover on his way.
- 14:10And then they got him in a run down.
- 14:12And it looks as though they're going to hold a rule to DeRocchi but they were definitely bumping around on the part of Jimmy Nelson.
- 14:19As I called it for you when it occurred.
- 14:22The ruling will stand and it will be a double play.
- 14:26And Hickman will be at first base on what is a force play.
- 14:34And Williams will be out five to four and Popovich will be out four to Hefner.
- 14:45With a two in there catching four to five.
- 14:48So you have a very unusual double play and they do not rule interference.
- 14:56Rather unusual two out.
- 15:05So over to first Hickman is back.
- 15:08So put Hickman on first on a force play.
- 15:11He rates Williams five to four.
- 15:14Then had Mazz come to the plate.
- 15:18Swing and a miss by Sento.
- 15:21And then he goes to Hefner who puts down Popovich who claimed he was interfered with as Nelson ran into him.
- 15:28Coming over to cover up halfway between third and home.
- 15:33Ron Sento over three in the first game batting at two thirty.
- 15:38No balls of strike.
- 15:42Palm ball inside one and one.
- 15:44I have to go on the assumption that the umpires that I know they saw the bumping around.
- 15:49Any doubt about that bumping around business?
- 15:53The question is whether or not in their opinion the runner was obstructed in such a way that he could not either get home or go back to third.
- 16:00And it is obviously a rule that he could not do either.
- 16:05That is why I am sure Al Barlich in third base umpire or played umpire bar go felt there was nothing to it.
- 16:16Two balls and a strike.
- 16:18It was so far down the line that there was in any way you could get him either way.
- 16:23That he could get back either way.
- 16:26But there was definite bumping.
- 16:28Alright two balls and a strike.
- 16:35Sento to batter.
- 16:36Now the two one pitch.
- 16:38Over the plate for a strike two and two.
- 16:42So Eddie Bargo of Butler, Pennsylvania who as a youngster saw many a game here at Forbes goes the honor of calling the last game in the major league to be performed at Forbes field.
- 16:55Two balls two strikes.
- 16:56That won't make one with a difference to him behind that plate.
- 16:59He just knows it is two teams going and that is as far as he knows.
- 17:02From that time on if the ball or a strike you are safe or you are out.
- 17:13Two balls two strikes.
- 17:15The look at first to pitch to Sento.
- 17:16Ball outside three and two.
- 17:18Hickman will be up and going.
- 17:25This opened up with a single by Kessinger.
- 17:27Single Popovich.
- 17:28Single Williams.
- 17:29And Pena warming up.
- 17:30Now he is just lobbing with two down and Hickman the runner at first.
- 17:35This represents right here I would think for Nelson a very key out.
- 17:39Three balls two strikes.
- 17:40Hickman takes off.
- 17:41Palm ball pops him up.
- 17:43And Heffner and Alley.
- 17:44And it is Alley saying I got it.
- 17:47And he is there for the eye.
- 17:54One run on three hits.
- 17:55No errors.
- 17:56And one left.
- 17:57And we go to the bottom of the first Chicago leading one and nothing.
- 18:03The Arctic Tundra.
- 18:04Twelve inches of vegetation covering frozen ground a thousand feet deep.
- 18:08When Atlantic Richfield Company discovered oil on Alaska's north slope,
- 18:12the place we call the Arco Circle,
- 18:14we found out if you disturb the tundra you cause erosion.
- 18:17A tire track can cause a 50 foot gorge.
- 18:20We stopped driving our trucks across it and started experiments with 13 different kinds of grass seed
- 18:25so that if erosion occurs we'd be ready.
- 18:28The seeding has to be done by hand.
- 18:30The fertilizing has to be done by helicopters.
- 18:32And the grasses will have to be incredibly hardy to make it.
- 18:35But if they do, there will be a way to protect the delicate tundra forever.
- 18:40At Atlantic Richfield Company,
- 18:42we're doing this because we believe drilling for oil and conservation go together.
- 18:47We went all the way to Alaska to drill for oil so we can provide your local Atlantic dealer
- 18:52the finest Arco petroleum products for your car.
- 18:55Music
- 19:24Music
- 19:32Bill Paffert to that hander, 2 and 2 on the hill.
- 19:36Howdy, Alou batting.
- 19:39Music
- 19:46Here's the pitch.
- 19:47And Alou owns the foul in the play.
- 19:49Alou won for four in the first game, batting a 276.
- 19:55Rusty Staff, it is 11th from Montreal and the 8th with one on, they lead 3 to 2.
- 20:03They're leading the Mets 3-2 and still batting.
- 20:08Now the 0-1.
- 20:09Ball inside in account of one ball and one strike.
- 20:14Try to learn of the passing and Jim Spock, the manager of WLEM on our prior radio network.
- 20:22The manager of WLEM, that's our fierce enemy, the Longer's family.
- 20:28Curve ball, first strike, 1 and 2.
- 20:30At the end of eight innings in Montreal, the Montreal Expos lead the New York Mets 3-2.
- 20:42One ball, two strikes, the pitch.
- 20:44Ball outside, 2 and 2.
- 20:47Carl Morton and Sadecki are hooked up there and Morton has three outs to go to help the Buccos gain a game.
- 20:55Hear the crowd roar?
- 21:00Two balls, two strikes.
- 21:02Alou hits a high fly ball down the right field line.
- 21:05Callison running very hard, running, running, running.
- 21:08It's a foul ball if Callison can't get to it.
- 21:14Funny thing, I was just talking with Jack Brickhouse.
- 21:18We were going around the park looking at things that I'm going to sorely miss just from the way of views.
- 21:25And we showed the scoreboard and said when we take this down, you'll have the only one left in the major leagues
- 21:31where you see the inning by inning.
- 21:33You can see the charm of that with the crowd roaring when they see Montreal get two up there
- 21:39because the folks are cognizant of what we did in the first game that are here.
- 21:43They're aware of what we're doing in this game.
- 21:46A foul up the long third.
- 21:47It may be a play for Santo this time.
- 21:49The ball's drifting on him and the snatch is a beautiful play by Ron Santo.
- 21:58And when you saw the two come up here, you heard that crowd roar.
- 22:02Now when you really hear the roar is if they just start taking down the numbers
- 22:08and put it up Montreal free in a New York match two.
- 22:12The way this race is going, we need all the help we can get,
- 22:15but we can't do anything about what's going on in Montreal.
- 22:18What's going on right here we've got to worry about.
- 22:20Hefner who is one for three in the first game, hitting a three on the hand.
- 22:25Here's the pitch.
- 22:26Swing and a miss, strike one.
- 22:29Cubs lead one and nothing.
- 22:31Cubs won the first game three to two.
- 22:37No balls, one strike.
- 22:38The outfielder out to the right.
- 22:40There's Hefner.
- 22:42Al Oliver on deck.
- 22:45That was the right hander works and there's a high fly ball out of the center field.
- 22:48Three-o-three-o-chain drifting over to the left.
- 22:51He's there and it's two-outs.
- 22:53Cubs won and the Pirates nothing.
- 22:56The right field and Al Oliver at two-five-o-five homers and 31 runs batted in.
- 23:02One thing I'm going to request of you, Nelly, I'm going to want,
- 23:06I know you can prepare it in due time.
- 23:09I'd like to score a correct time by everybody that played in the last game.
- 23:13We'll get Chicago and we'll get Chicago and then make me up a little plaque, if you will, ball outside.
- 23:20I'd like to have the plaque, if you don't mind, of the last game I ever called here with the scoring of the game
- 23:27for both clubs signing in their proper positions.
- 23:30You'd do that for me?
- 23:31I'd be happy to do it, huh?
- 23:33You're making money hand over fist with these firsts.
- 23:35The foul, I ought to play one and one, but it's all right, old buddy.
- 23:39No, of all the cost, too.
- 23:42I don't want you to do that.
- 23:44Take your mark up.
- 23:45It's hard to get.
- 23:48He's looking for a no-hitter every game, Bob.
- 23:51He better not get one here.
- 23:53I won't speak to either of you guys.
- 23:55He threw up a no-hitter in this game.
- 23:57I want to walk out of here saying I never saw a no-hitter in this ballpark.
- 24:03You joining me, Ned Arthur?
- 24:05We don't want Lady Forbes to give up a no-hitter here, do we?
- 24:10Two balls and a strike.
- 24:11Not this far, not after 61 years.
- 24:14No way.
- 24:15Two on pitch.
- 24:17And a swing and it's two and two.
- 24:22We've already lost our chance to get one.
- 24:25Now the first hit we get and we can breathe easy.
- 24:30Come on, Al.
- 24:32Get it over with.
- 24:34Two balls, two strikes, two out, the pitch.
- 24:37Turn it over outside, three and two.
- 24:41Remember I asked Ang Bowler one day what Pappas do.
- 24:44He's a fastball slider, gets it up the tower to park.
- 24:48He'd like to even get a slider up, but he's still closer.
- 24:51Three balls, two strikes.
- 24:53Milk Pappa's working out all over the pitch.
- 24:56And there she goes.
- 24:58My giant kiss of goodbye.
- 25:02Cheers and applause.
- 25:29Good in the second race in the middle, tomorrow night.
- 25:33Want me to come over?
- 25:35I haven't missed so far today.
- 25:37I've been pretty fortunate.
- 25:39A slider up.
- 25:40Here's William Starrge at 2.45.
- 25:43Five balls, he's left field.
- 25:45Billy Williams back will have a play.
- 25:48And that will be Tara the Side.
- 25:51There will never be a no-hitter at Forbes Field.
- 25:55One run on one hit, a homer by Oliver.
- 25:58And the one, we're tied up one-one.
- 26:01Did you ever have a girl show up in a wig and not recognize her?
- 26:04Well, here's the story somewhat like that.
- 26:07Some people have received new credit cards and failed to recognize them.
- 26:11And of course this is understandable.
- 26:13The big name on the card, and incidentally it's a handsome card,
- 26:17but the big name is ARCO, A-R-C-O.
- 26:21They didn't realize that this new ARCO card was a replacement for their old Atlantic credit card.
- 26:27After Richfield and Atlantic merged to become the Atlantic Richfield Company,
- 26:32it made sense to have one national credit card good at thousands of service stations from coast to coast.
- 26:38Makes it easy for everyone, including the people at Hertz, Ramada and Treadway Inns,
- 26:43Hyatt House Hotels, Hyatt Lodges, Travelodge Motels, Friendship Inns,
- 26:47Evans Walker Inns, Incorporated, and Superior Motels.
- 26:51They all honor this new card.
- 26:53Now they have only one name to remember, and so do you.
- 26:57ARCO, it stands for all the good products and services you get at your Atlantic station.
- 27:04All right, here we go now into the second inning tied up 1-1, Johnny Callison.
- 27:24Standing in, Johnny had a 0-3 day in the front game.
- 27:28He's batting a 2-47.
- 27:30He's homered 34 runs batted in.
- 27:32He's going to miss by one.
- 27:38Those of you who might have missed it earlier, Roberto Clemente who has just made a magnificent gesture.
- 27:45The autographed baseballs for Art McKenna and Gene and Nellie and me,
- 27:50and I'm quite sure for several other members around here,
- 27:53they sent them up to him with personally autographed baseballs with a message for each one of us
- 27:59what either one of us or any one of us particularly meant to him.
- 28:04The G1 thing, and of course, and he's only known to you a little bit,
- 28:07Nellie, a long time to me for some things that I've been involved with him,
- 28:12and it's just a treasure thing, a real treasure, and that's just the word for it, treasure.
- 28:18Callison, a fellow, what a thoughtful individual.
- 28:22They take one, Arriba, Arriba Clemente.
- 28:25And there, just walk in with a youngster.
- 28:29I would sort of suspect somehow or other Roberto will play in the last game at Forbes Field.
- 28:34Would you, Nellie?
- 28:36I imagine he's going to make some sort of an appearance.
- 28:38If it's, if we're out in front, you can bet he's going to be defensively in the outfield.
- 28:42If we're behind, he's going to be doing some pinching.
- 28:45I hope it's the first rather than the latter.
- 28:48You've got to think positively, my boy.
- 28:51Positively.
- 28:54One ball, two strikes to John Callison.
- 28:57Sails it all the way to the backstop, two and two.
- 29:02Well, in the first game we had a problem with regard to the, the greasy kidstop,
- 29:10and Al Barty went out and ran his hands through the air in the cap of one Regan.
- 29:15That was a strikeout by Callison.
- 29:21First strikeout for Nelson.
- 29:23And so we're moving along here right now and the batter's going to be Cleo James batting 198.
- 29:31That's two hits.
- 29:32He was the fellow, really it was six foot three and Cleo James two in the first game.
- 29:37He scored a run and drove in the run.
- 29:40So that he's responsible for two tallies.
- 29:42Billy Hans lost a tough ball game.
- 29:45But the Bucks won a big one when they held them off in the night.
- 29:51Cleo right in batter.
- 29:53Punched the ball, dropped it right foul, strike one.
- 30:05Got a sign out there.
- 30:06Somebody's not going to give it up.
- 30:07I bet she's hanging down, looks like she's saying, does Forbes feel forever?
- 30:13Well, I'll tell you, it's been great for 61 years, but it's not going to be forever.
- 30:18Nothing ever is.
- 30:19Progress will prevail.
- 30:22But this will be a beautiful scene that we'll remember forever.
- 30:25One and one and the fans that have been here will, while you'll enjoy, come into Cleo Breever Stadium and believe me you will.
- 30:31It's an awe inspiring sight.
- 30:33Here's the one-one.
- 30:35Foul ball right down the left side.
- 30:39One and two.
- 30:42It's never been a ball park.
- 30:51Never been a ball park.
- 30:56But the background of the Cleo that we have here.
- 31:01The fans are upset.
- 31:02The backs slipped out and one of the fans got it with Cleo.
- 31:05Let me ask you folks something.
- 31:16This could be his game back.
- 31:18This could be the one that he had the two hits with.
- 31:20I'm going to give him another bat.
- 31:22Leo DeRozsa's sending it down to him.
- 31:26That's all he wanted was his own back back.
- 31:28Leo DeRozsa sends it back down.
- 31:30See?
- 31:31You'll find it now.
- 31:38I'll tell you one of the tragic things would be if somebody were somehow or other able to take Billy Mazarovsky's game back.
- 31:45The one he's kept with him for years.
- 31:47They don't make them like that anymore.
- 31:49Don't even.
- 31:51Send him down and they'll escort him out there.
- 31:55Here's a two-two pitch just underneath three and two.
- 32:01I'll say that would be a great souvenir.
- 32:03But let me tell you what it does.
- 32:04It belongs to the nation.
- 32:05When Mazarovsky's finished with it, it'll go to Cooperstown.
- 32:08And that's where it belongs.
- 32:10Where they can all see it.
- 32:13Filed it right out of play.
- 32:15And I'm quite confident that Bill will send that glove to Cooperstown.
- 32:18It belongs up there.
- 32:19It looks like a glove used in 1909.
- 32:24I've never seen a smaller glove in my life on a Major League ball player.
- 32:34Three balls, two strikes, one out.
- 32:36We're in the second inning tied up 1-1.
- 32:38Pirates won the first game three to two.
- 32:44On deck is J.C. Martin, Jimmy Nelson working three-two pitch to Cleo James.
- 32:50Foul ball to the right side out of play.
- 32:52Cleo's choking up just a little bit on his path.
- 32:54He's not trying for Pumpsville.
- 32:58They're just trying to make contact.
- 33:06Man, you don't think we're going to be in the middle of a hornets mess when we come flying around into New York next Monday, tomorrow night.
- 33:12Three-two pitch, a fly ball toward left coming up for it.
- 33:14Will Stoddell has it.
- 33:16I can't wait for Jane Jarvis and that magnificent Oregon music at Shea Stadium and 55,000 people going wild.
- 33:30And that will be about how many will be there when we play the match tomorrow night and Tuesday night and then again on Wednesday afternoon.
- 33:39But what if everything goes the way it's going right now?
- 33:42That will be for the lead in the Eastern Division. Cardinals beat the Phillies 5-4.
- 33:49Pitch to J.C. Martin batting at 149.
- 34:01One ball and a strike.
- 34:04Sawed him off inside 2-0.
- 34:07Ladies and gentlemen, Montreal has beaten the Mets.
- 34:15That's two out of three for them over the Mets.
- 34:19They win it, 3-6-0, 2-12-1.
- 34:22Morton beats the Dekes, 27,000 at Clark-Curie.
- 34:26There's a high fly to left field.
- 34:28Cardinals got it and folks think we're on fire.
- 34:34We're playing three down and we go to the bottom of the second one and a lot.
- 34:44Here's Bobby Robertson, didn't play in the first game at 296.
- 35:12The Mets 35 runs better than that.
- 35:24The Pirates now right in behind the New York Mets.
- 35:39The interesting thing to hear is the total amount of attendance here today is sent up by John Fitzpatrick, our traveling secretary.
- 35:47We know that it's a sellout and an ineffective standing room only.
- 35:52And such being the case, that standing room only, it's hard to tell how many people are actually here.
- 36:03There really is no aisle way in the upper deck or lower deck.
- 36:06They're just packed in there, pitches low for the ball, 1-0.
- 36:11And then in behind the lower deck, just packed in there.
- 36:16To witness the final two games at Wolfsfield, in which the Pirates won the first game, not a pitch.
- 36:24Now swinging by Robertson on the count of one and one.
- 36:37They're very deep in the outfield and a little bit around to the left.
- 36:43Pappas working the 1-1 pitch. Strikes the cue, slotted to the outside corner.
- 37:01One ball and two strikes.
- 37:03Milk Pappas to the right hander, kicks the livers. He's blowing away out of the dirt for the ball, 2-2.
- 37:10Jack Bland visiting, watching the ball game, and of course very much up to his ears.
- 37:16And the Arnold Palmer festivities for July 21 at the Hilton Hotel, which will benefit Daddy's scholarship.
- 37:22And the score of the poor ball at Lowell.
- 37:25Robertson hits a howling fight at Wolfsfield, and Billy Williams, man, comes jogging up 1-1.
- 37:35The Arnold Palmer get-together is open to the public on the 21st of July,
- 37:40and all the net proceeds will be going toward the benefit of Daddy's scholarship,
- 37:44sponsored by the AMM and the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association.
- 37:50If you'd like to come on at the dinner dance and see all the greats of golf and honor Honey Palmer,
- 37:56you can get your tickets to Jim Potts and the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association.
- 38:00Alley swings are misses, batting at 2-4-0 for Homer, the 13 runs batted in.
- 38:05Chino in the first game, 0-0 for 3.
- 38:11No balls in the strike, Pappas over the line up in the face.
- 38:14There's a fly ball felt and routed deep into right center, Chins, sunglasses down,
- 38:19quarters against the sun, 2-0.
- 38:22And the batter now will be Jerry May.
- 38:24Jerry walked in the first game with a base of rodent, and thus drove in what proved to be the winning run.
- 38:29And so he was received sudden for a game-winning hit, in a way.
- 38:34After all, he had a game-winning hit before or two, and bases on balls where the sack floated as an RBI.
- 38:45Jerry at 2-0-7.
- 38:49Biter on the corner for a strike.
- 38:51Minnesota beats the White Sox 9-1.
- 38:56A lot of double-headers today.
- 38:59No balls, one strike.
- 39:04Now the 0-1-1.
- 39:06Fly ball out into right center, Callison going over, drifting now, turning to his right and under for the out.
- 39:14Three up and three down, and at the end of two innings of play, the Pirates and the Cubs are tied at 1-1-1.
- 39:25When Atlantic Richfield Company discovered oil on the north slope of Alaska, the place we call the Arco Circle,
- 39:32it took 100,000 tons of supplies and equipment to get started.
- 39:37It took 100,000 tons of pipe, cement, drill, gravel, pot, glove, pipe, heater, tractor, ladder, radio, and orange juice.
- 39:48It took planes that carry 48,000 pounds and cost $4,000 a trip.
- 39:54It took 160 flights to set up one camp and five flights a day to keep it going.
- 40:01It took a specialist instructor's airstrip, Blue Storm.
- 40:05It took the biggest civilian airlift in history.
- 40:08At Atlantic Richfield, we went all the way to Alaska so we can provide your local Atlantic dealer
- 40:14with the finest Arco petroleum products for your car.
- 40:18The Pirates won the first game of the doubleheaders, 3-2, to extend their winning streak to six straights.
- 40:33At the same time, and at the Cubs, our ninth consecutive loss.
- 40:37Now at the end of two complete innings of the second game of the doubleheaders, the game is all tied at 1.
- 40:44As we go to the top of the third, Milpapas will lead it off.
- 40:48The first pitch from Nelson is outside for a ball.
- 40:50What a nutting.
- 40:52Nobody on and nobody out.
- 40:55Young right-hander delivers.
- 40:57Papas swings, broken back blooper.
- 41:00On the edge of the outfield grass, the shortstop makes the catch.
- 41:03Looking right into the brilliant sunshine, Galley slips those glasses from under the visor down very quickly
- 41:10and caught the ball.
- 41:12Out of the inning here is Don Kessinger.
- 41:14Kessinger led off the ball game with a base hit in the left field.
- 41:18He has scored the Chicago run.
- 41:21Kessinger in the first game went nothing for four.
- 41:24He has two hits now and nine trips to the plate in the series.
- 41:28He leads the Chicago Cubs in three base hits with seven.
- 41:34Kessinger the batter.
- 41:36Third baseman, Hebner, will play him up on the grass.
- 41:39Right side of the infield, playing about straight away.
- 41:41The outfield, however, playing for him to hit the ball late and in the left.
- 41:46Bomb ball is fouled over here to our left.
- 41:50One strike to Kessinger.
- 41:53Galley coaching at third base and Amal Patano at first.
- 41:57Bucks are set up defensively.
- 41:59Scarborough on left, DeLuin center, and Oliver in right.
- 42:04Forty thousand nine hundred and eighteen.
- 42:08Tenants here on a drive into light.
- 42:11Scoop by the scoop.
- 42:13Al Oliver on a fine play.
- 42:16He came charging in to catch that thinking smash off the bat of Kessinger.
- 42:22He scooped it right up into that big, snapper's bit of his for the second out of the inning.
- 42:28Two up and two down, and the batter now is Paul Popovich.
- 42:32The biggest crowd since 1956, looking on this afternoon.
- 42:39Second baseman, Paul Popovich.
- 42:41The batter now is Paul Popovich.
- 42:44Fitches a dry call.
- 42:48Here's the fellow who turned it all around for the Bucks last Monday night.
- 42:53Bomb ball is blowed to the left-hander batter.
- 42:55Ball one and strike one.
- 43:00Two out, nobody on, and the top of the third.
- 43:03Hubs to the out hits, the Bucks three to one, but the game is tied at one.
- 43:08And here's the one-one pitch.
- 43:11Aye, bomb ball.
- 43:13Beauty that time over the outside part of the plate.
- 43:16One ball and two strikes.
- 43:21Outfield straight away for Popovich, who did not play in the first game.
- 43:24Backed away from a breaking ball in close.
- 43:27Ball two, strike two, two out, and nobody on.
- 43:31Popovich batting at 263.
- 43:37Singled into right center field his first time up against Nelson.
- 43:41The 2-2 pitch backs him out of the batter's box in a hurry.
- 43:45Three and two.
- 43:46Nelson had a little zip to that pass law of his on that delivery.
- 43:52Nice meeting of the season between the two teams.
- 43:56The sky's at four.
- 44:02Nelson reads the signs.
- 44:04The 3-2 pitch, low into the dirt.
- 44:07Popovich crosses the bat away and hits short first.
- 44:10That's the first walk given up by Nelson in this ball game.
- 44:15Two out, Annie Oakley to Popovich.
- 44:17Here's Billy Williams.
- 44:21Williams singing in the center field in the first inning to drive in the Chicago Run,
- 44:26playing in his 1,052nd consecutive game.
- 44:36Nelson will work with the runner at first.
- 44:38Robertson will hold the inside corner against him.
- 44:41The pitch to Williams is outside for a ball.
- 44:43What a nothing.
- 44:55Runner leads it first.
- 44:56Nelson looks over the shoulder, draws the arms in.
- 44:59Here's the pitch.
- 45:00Oh, it's one on and hit into right.
- 45:03It's in the field to play as Oliver in the brilliant sun sun.
- 45:07All to the end to retire the sun.
- 45:10In the third, no runs, no hits, no errors, one walk, one man left on.
- 45:16We go to the home half of the third at Forbes Field in the second game of the doubleheader,
- 45:20and our game is tied at one.
- 45:23What would you think of a restaurant that guaranteed good service or your money back?
- 45:27You'd be ahead of the game either way, right?
- 45:30Well, that's pretty much what happens with Atlantic's Red Ball service.
- 45:35If your Red Ball service dealer doesn't clean your windshield
- 45:38or offer to check your oil, weather permitting,
- 45:41he will refund the price of your gasoline.
- 45:44Red Ball service is your Atlantic dealer's way of assuring you of good service
- 45:49so that if you are on a trip,
- 45:51you know you are going to get the same good service you get in your neighborhood.
- 45:55So you get the same service from a dealer who doesn't know you
- 45:59as you do from the guy who's known you for years.
- 46:02Now, the details may vary slightly from state to state,
- 46:06but the quality of Red Ball service never varies.
- 46:09If it does, you get your gasoline for free.
- 46:13Atlantic Red Ball service, you're ahead of the game whether you get it or not.
- 46:19The crowd now hearing the announcement from the D.A. announcer, Roger Kinnon,
- 46:36that the crowd at 40,918 is the fourth largest regular season crowd
- 46:40in the World Series as the fifth largest in the history of warm field.
- 46:45Here's Mazurowski. He played before them all.
- 46:48Bic is cut out of the mid-course right and it's nothing in one.
- 46:53One before the first game, Maz is one out of six on the series.
- 46:59Pappas blows in close for a ball, one and one.
- 47:03Sano at third, Kepinger the shortstop, Popovich at second with Hickman at first.
- 47:08Williams, James, and Callison around the infield.
- 47:11Martin gives the sign and Milpapas gets ready to go to work, one-one to the batter.
- 47:17That's a breaking ball outside, two balls and a strike.
- 47:21Frank Osiak coaching at third, Don Leppert at first.
- 47:28And he's raised that bat back and forth a couple of times, now holds it steady as Pappas works two-one.
- 47:34Ball is tap foul, two and two for Mazurowski.
- 47:40Nelson in the on-deck circle will be up next and then Mattie Allou in the hole.
- 47:46Cubs score to McCaw for the first, three consecutive hits,
- 47:50and Oliver tied it up with one swing of a bat in the home half of the first
- 47:55for his sixth home run of the season and his 32nd run battered in.
- 47:59Low for the ball.
- 48:01Swing runs out on Mazurowski, three and two.
- 48:06The crowd had a lot to cheer about in the first game and they're ready to let it all out here in this encounter.
- 48:15Here's the three-two pitch, swing and a foul that will come back on his three.
- 48:21Still three and two in the batter.
- 48:23Ball involved and strike for the second game and the final game in the history of Forbes Field, Margo.
- 48:30Behind the plate, Payer at first, Dello at second, Malik at third.
- 48:38Bill Pappas leans to the waist, picks up the sign, kicks and throws and Maz breaks out.
- 48:46One for the breaking ball that time, didn't get it.
- 48:48That's the first strikeout for Pappas.
- 48:50One out in the home half of the third and the batter is the pitcher, Jim Nelson.
- 48:58Nelson, two for six of the plate, batting 333.
- 49:03As the pitcher, he has won two and lost none.
- 49:07Fast ball pops in for a strike and it's nothing in one.
- 49:10Nelson chokes up a bit on the handle of the bat.
- 49:13Outfield looking at him for the first time.
- 49:16They're playing shallow toward right.
- 49:19Fast ball.
- 49:22Get a great cut of that one.
- 49:24No ball, two strikes.
- 49:30Steps out for a moment and then digs back in.
- 49:36Pappas works, oh, two to the batter.
- 49:39Ball is hit, plate to the right side and foul.
- 49:42Rolls just beyond the first base dugout.
- 49:46Connie Perez has just hit his 27th home run of the season for Cincinnati and the ninth inning, nobody on.
- 49:523-2, Cincinnati.
- 49:57The game is being played in Houston.
- 50:03The strike, two pitch.
- 50:06A ball outside, he's done with a curve ball that time down around the knees.
- 50:11It's just missed, one ball, two strikes.
- 50:20Rhythmic applause beginning to generate now through the stadium as Nelson swings and misses.
- 50:26We start on strike as we pause for station identification along the Pittsburgh Pirate Radio Network.
- 50:35That is Jack Wheeler from midnight to 6 a.m. on HAA Pittsburgh.
- 50:51Two out, nobody on.
- 50:56He pops it up into short center.
- 50:59The short pass going out, center fielder coming on and the center fielder comes on to make the catch to retire the side.
- 51:06In the third, three up, three down, no runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on.
- 51:11At the end of three innings of play in the second game of the doubleheaders, Chicago won, Pittsburgh won.
- 51:16Hey there, you've came for a quiz? Well, then listen carefully because the question won't be repeated.
- 51:23What does ARCO stand for? Now that's spelled A-R-C-O.
- 51:29Here are a few hints. And hit number one would be this.
- 51:32Many of you recently received a credit card with the name ARCO on top.
- 51:36It replaced your Atlantic card.
- 51:39Number two, the ARCO card is honored by Hertz, Ramada, and Treadway Inn, Hyatt House Hotels, Hyatt Lodges,
- 51:46Tava Lodge Motels, Friendship Inn, Emmons Walker Inn, and Superior Motel.
- 51:52Well, the time's up.
- 51:54Anyone who figured out that ARCO stands for the petroleum products of the Atlantic Richfield Company gets an A.
- 52:00You see, when the Atlantic Richfield Company was formed, it made sense to have one national credit card
- 52:05good at thousands of service stations coast to coast.
- 52:08The name selected for the card was ARCO.
- 52:10And if you'd like to carry on applications, they're waiting for you at all Atlantic stations.
- 52:14If there are no more questions, then class is dismissed.
- 52:18The first three innings were brought to you by Atlantic Richfield Company and your local Atlantic dealers.
- 52:34These next three innings are brought to you by Iron City Beer.
- 52:38Have an Iron City right now.
- 52:40The batter is Hickman here on the top of the fourth inning.
- 52:44Pitch is a strike, Saul.
- 52:47That was a fastball, Neha.
- 52:49Outfield is shaded toward left and left center.
- 52:52The gap is in right center field and down the right field line.
- 52:58Fling and a foul back.
- 53:17Nelson picks up the sign from catcher Jerry May.
- 53:20The pitch to Hickman.
- 53:22It's outside off the corner.
- 53:29The count on Hickman, ball two and strike two.
- 53:39Nelson very deliberate.
- 53:41Deliberate.
- 53:42The ball is thrown on, broken back five ball into right, fell out center field.
- 53:46And Alou has to angle away, turn his left shoulder into the bright sun and then sort of kept it going away.
- 53:56One out.
- 53:57The batter will be Ryan Sano.
- 53:59Sano popped to the shortstop in the first inning.
- 54:02He has nothing but one against Nelson.
- 54:05He has one hit and eight trips to the plate in this series after being shut out in three drives in the first game.
- 54:15Fling and a miss.
- 54:17Nelson gave him a fastball.
- 54:18Nothing in one.
- 54:20California has edge cancer city two to one.
- 54:23Murphy the winner, Rooker the loser.
- 54:28The pitch to Sano.
- 54:30Fastball is low.
- 54:31Ball one and strike one.
- 54:34Light breeze now blowing the American flag out toward right center.
- 54:40Coming across the scoreboard and now toward the seats, all the folks scammed in the double deck right field area.
- 54:47Swing and a foul out of the screen.
- 54:50One ball and two strikes.
- 54:55Home plate umpire looking over that baseball and he'll throw it out of the game.
- 55:00A new one has gone to the mound.
- 55:06Up to 21 and 16 at home, 14-17 on the road for a 35-33 record.
- 55:13Foul ball followed away to the right side.
- 55:16Ball is into the third deck and will give that fan an error because it dropped all the way down below.
- 55:23Still one and two on the batter.
- 55:32Sano digging in and waiting.
- 55:37Delfin kicks and throws.
- 55:39Curve is low.
- 55:40Two and two.
- 55:42One out, nobody on as the Cubs bat into fourth inning and the game is tied at one.
- 55:53The two-two pitch.
- 55:55Curve way outside.
- 55:57May have a flight out in a hurry that time.
- 56:00Nobody on so there's no damage done.
- 56:03Full count of three and two.
- 56:08With two out in the third inning, Nelson walked his first and only batter thus far in the ball game.
- 56:14He gave a walk to Popovich on a three-two pitch.
- 56:17Now for the second time he has gone three-two on a Chicago batter.
- 56:25Delivers, the ball is hung on, hits towards right. Going back is Oliver.
- 56:30Still back-tapping, he's there.
- 56:32He made a plenty-time test right in front of his body about fell high after he got to the warning track.
- 56:40Two ups and two downs.
- 56:42The batter will be Johnny Callison.
- 56:44Oliver gives him the press and he's starting to like playing the outfield.
- 56:48He's a great player.
- 56:49That was just kind of rookie.
- 56:51He doesn't have that feeling because he seemed to be a little more freer when he was playing out in left field too.
- 56:58Callison struck out in the second inning.
- 57:02Nelson has been one strike out and it was against this left-handed batter.
- 57:07He's outside a little high and off the corner for a ball.
- 57:10What a nothing.
- 57:13Montreal defeated New York three-two, St. Louis down Philadelphia five-to-four.
- 57:20The pitch.
- 57:21Wing of the mayor.
- 57:23That's a fastball right up around his shoulders that time.
- 57:26He didn't get it.
- 57:29Bucks won the first game three-to-two.
- 57:34Picked up a full game now that New York has lost.
- 57:39Wing of the mayor.
- 57:41One ball and two strikes to the batter.
- 57:47Callison would shut out in three tries in the first game.
- 57:50He's now 1-4-8 against pirate pitching in this series, which started yesterday afternoon with a pirate victory.
- 57:58This is low.
- 57:59Ball doing strike two on Callison.
- 58:07Bucks have won six in a row, four in the Cardinals, and yesterday in the first game this afternoon from Chicago.
- 58:14Fastball is way over the batter's head, and he has gone to three-and-two now to Callison.
- 58:21On a three-two pitch to Sennel.
- 58:24Sennel hit a fly ball caught by Oliver and Wright.
- 58:28Now the three-two pitch to Callison.
- 58:31He takes ball four in close.
- 58:33Second walk issued in the ball game by Nelson, and it brings up Cleo J.
- 58:40Two for three in the front game. Fly to the left fielder. It's his first time around against Nelson.
- 58:52Boston defeated New York 5-3 in the American League.
- 58:57Minnesota 9, Chicago 1, California 2, Kansas City 1, as we mentioned.
- 59:05And he will be working with the runner at first.
- 59:10Callison takes a short lead. Robertson holding the inside corner against him.
- 59:16Set by Jimmy.
- 59:18And the pitch.
- 59:19Low for a ball. What a nothing.
- 59:24Gargoyne straightaway left field. Allou has moved way over to his right or toward left center field.
- 59:31There's a tremendous gap over second base in the straightaway center and in the right center field.
- 59:37Oliver all alone out there and Wright.
- 59:40It's a set by Nelson to pitch.
- 59:43Breaking ball off the corner.
- 59:47Ball two with no strike.
- 1:00:02Nelson looks over the left fielder as the runner takes a short lead.
- 1:00:05He stays the ball, whiff, foul through the third base coaching box off the railing and in the fair territory.
- 1:00:12Time will be held up while Starjo gets the ball. He flicks it into the Chicago bullpen down the left field line.
- 1:00:19Two balls and a strike to Clio James.
- 1:00:28Big series beginning tomorrow night in New York between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Mets.
- 1:00:35Monday night, Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon.
- 1:00:38St. Louis the runner is back.
- 1:00:42Thursday will be an open day and the next weekend in Chicago and on to Philadelphia.
- 1:00:47Poking out before the all-star break in St. Louis.
- 1:00:51Pitch is hit.
- 1:00:54Right after batter he ducked underneath and turned his head and hit him on his batting helmet and he is all right.
- 1:01:01He'll go to first.
- 1:01:05He doesn't seem to get away from that delivery at all.
- 1:01:08So now we have Johnny Callison in scoring position at second.
- 1:01:12Clio James in on the batting helmet.
- 1:01:15The runner at first. Two men on, two out.
- 1:01:18May has called time and he has gone to the mound to talk to Nelson.
- 1:01:27Outfield will play straight away for J.C. Martin making his first appearance in the series.
- 1:01:34Looking at 1.49, one home run, four runs batted in.
- 1:01:38Hyatt has been catching of the series yesterday afternoon in the first game of the doubleheader today.
- 1:01:47Orlando Pena walking around in the pirate bullpen.
- 1:01:51Ricketts the catcher also loosening up and believe Joe Gibbon will go to work.
- 1:02:01Here he is, Joe Gibbon loosening up for Pittsburgh.
- 1:02:05Pitch from Nelson is outside for a ball.
- 1:02:08What a nothing.
- 1:02:09Fans are getting a bit anxious now and time has been called as the pitching coach, Don Osborne,
- 1:02:15will go to the mound to talk to the young right-hander.
- 1:02:22Now it's the first time that he has been in a situation like that since he has been called up from Columbus.
- 1:02:28He hasn't been able to throw strikes and that was the thing that has really pleased Danny Murtaugh.
- 1:02:33And of course Osborne too, but the ability to stay out in front of the hitters and struggling with control.
- 1:02:38You're going to run into those kind of games.
- 1:02:40You don't pitch shutouts every time.
- 1:02:42He's going to find that out himself.
- 1:02:45Right now it's a one-one ball game with the Cubs batting in the top of the fourth.
- 1:02:49The first two men were retired, Hickman and Sandlin, and Awoshek Callison and James was hit by a pitch.
- 1:02:55Runners lead it first and second time about to be resumed.
- 1:03:00J.C. Martin waiting on a one-hole pitch.
- 1:03:03Here it comes.
- 1:03:04It's low into the dirt.
- 1:03:06Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:03:12In the first game, Moose started, then Jussie, and then Walker.
- 1:03:17Now Joe Gibbon began to loosen up.
- 1:03:22A big step by Nelson and a pitch.
- 1:03:25Fast ball is high and outside.
- 1:03:29Three balls, no strikes.
- 1:03:31Another wide one would load him up and then bring up the pitcher, Milt Packard.
- 1:03:35Down through the years, as I remember Milt from Baltimore, the American League, he has an excellent hitting pitcher.
- 1:03:47He's been around in the Major League Baseball for some 14 seasons now.
- 1:03:52There's a strike called and it's three and one.
- 1:03:58He was involved in a trade between Baltimore and Cincinnati.
- 1:04:01He was going to Cincinnati and Frank Robinson going from the Reds to the Baltimore Orioles.
- 1:04:08Runners lead it first and second.
- 1:04:10The pitch, swinging around ball foul.
- 1:04:14Something we'll have to give now, a runner at first, a runner at second.
- 1:04:18There are two outs and ball free.
- 1:04:21Strike two count to the left hand of hitting J.C. Martin.
- 1:04:29Time held up momentarily as that ball came off the wall, rolled out into the playing area, retrieved by Luke Walker.
- 1:04:35So Nelson goes to the back part of the mound, goes to the rousin sack, squeezes it a couple of times.
- 1:04:41Now steps back atop the pitching rubber.
- 1:04:44Runners lead it first and second.
- 1:04:47J.C. Martin waiting on a ball free.
- 1:04:50Strike two pitch.
- 1:04:51To look to second.
- 1:04:52Here's the pitch.
- 1:04:53The runner's go.
- 1:04:54He almost threw it away.
- 1:04:56That ball was high and away.
- 1:04:59Jerry May was lucky to even get it.
- 1:05:02The bases are loaded.
- 1:05:04Callison at third, Cleo James at second, J.C. Martin on a 3-2 pitch is at first and the batter is Milt Pappas.
- 1:05:23Pappas just acquired from Atlanta steps in.
- 1:05:26The game is tied at one.
- 1:05:27Runners lead it first, second and third.
- 1:05:30Nelson has the windup restored and he will use the windup.
- 1:05:34Coming down the line, a good distance is Callison.
- 1:05:40Swing and a miss.
- 1:05:44Callison, veteran performer, figuring that maybe by darting toward the plate and putting on the brakes and heading back toward third,
- 1:05:52he could force Nelson into committing a bop.
- 1:05:55This fellow has a lot of foils.
- 1:05:57Now he steps off the pitching rubber and looks over there and Callison goes back.
- 1:06:01You probably get the message that this kid has a lot of know-how.
- 1:06:05A fly ball in the center.
- 1:06:06Should end the inning without any trouble.
- 1:06:08Allou is coming in.
- 1:06:09He's got it.
- 1:06:10And it retires the side.
- 1:06:13Nelson gets out of a tough spot in the fourth inning.
- 1:06:17No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 1:06:20And Freeman left on the bases.
- 1:06:23And we go to the last half of the fourth inning, the game is tied at one.
- 1:06:27I'd like a few words with you Bucs fans about the fine art of beer drinking.
- 1:06:31Not just any beer drinking.
- 1:06:33I'm talking about good beer drinking.
- 1:06:36That's Iron City beer drinking.
- 1:06:38You know, some people insist that all beers taste the same.
- 1:06:42If you're Iron City beer drinkers, then I know it's different.
- 1:06:44Because that Iron City taste is different.
- 1:06:47You can tell by looking at Iron City's rich amber color.
- 1:06:51Iron City delivers your kind of taste.
- 1:06:53Bold and refreshing, cold and alive.
- 1:06:56Just ask any Iron City drinker.
- 1:06:58He'll tell you that Iron City's taste stays alive.
- 1:07:01Glass after glass, bottle after bottle, can after can.
- 1:07:06That's why Iron City is the number one beer in Pittsburgh.
- 1:07:10Outselling all other beers combined.
- 1:07:13So the next time your thirst comes up, wet it down with Iron City.
- 1:07:18Once you get there, you'll never want to leave.
- 1:07:22In the last of the fourth inning, Hemner, Oliver, and Starjo will be the first three men to go against Mill Pappas.
- 1:07:39You haven't heard, you've just eye-on a cross.
- 1:07:42The Pirates won the first game, 3-2.
- 1:07:47And tied in this game at one.
- 1:07:50Here is Hemner, and the folks that like to get something started now, that would make applause.
- 1:07:5640,000 plus.
- 1:07:58There's the foul, back to the stream.
- 1:08:01One strike on Hemner.
- 1:08:03Hemner fly to the center fielder in the first inning.
- 1:08:06He had one for three in the first game.
- 1:08:09And three out of eight now against Cubs pitching in the series.
- 1:08:13For the year, Richie is hitting at 3-0-9.
- 1:08:16He leads the game in doubles with 16.
- 1:08:19The strike one-fifth.
- 1:08:21Herb bends in a little close to the left-hander batter.
- 1:08:25Ball one and strike one.
- 1:08:27Cincinnati has defeated Houston 3-2.
- 1:08:29The difference in the ball game for Rez is 27 to home run of the season.
- 1:08:34He leads the major leagues in home run.
- 1:08:37Dangup is popped into the air down the third base line.
- 1:08:40Coming down the line is Sano, and he makes the catch.
- 1:08:42One out.
- 1:08:45It will bring up Oliver.
- 1:08:48Oliver ties the game in the home half of the first inning with his sixth home run of the season.
- 1:08:54And his 30 seconds runs out of hand.
- 1:08:59Oliver now with two hits and eight trips to the plate in the series.
- 1:09:03Left-hander batter batting 2-40, 2-50 for the year, 2-5-0.
- 1:09:09Ooh, he is able to get away from the pitch that backed him off the plate after stepping up to the delivery in a hurry.
- 1:09:19He moved into the pitch and was real lucky to get out of there.
- 1:09:25He's still out of the batter's box, leaning on the bat and tapping off the skin part of the mound, walking to the grass, roughing up the baseball.
- 1:09:36Out the other round towards right and right center.
- 1:09:41The pitch to Oliver, swing and a foul off to the left.
- 1:09:45Foul was in on his hands that time.
- 1:09:49I don't imagine, Billy, that he'll see anything outside from Pappas for the rest of the afternoon.
- 1:09:55I don't know. He's been pitch-tight before, and a lot of guys try to brush him off the plate.
- 1:10:00He doesn't back up on anybody. He's very aggressive, isn't he?
- 1:10:05Pappas works, and it's outside for a ball, 2-1.
- 1:10:11If it had hurt, it may have been a retaliation shot.
- 1:10:14Cleo James got hit. Most things have been known to happen in baseball games before.
- 1:10:19Yes, the pitch, swing and a foul over near the left and out of play.
- 1:10:25Ball two, strike two to the batter, Al Oliver, one hour nobody on in the last half of the fourth inning.
- 1:10:44Oliver waiting on a 2-2 pitch.
- 1:10:47Pappas blinds and delivers, swing and a foul back to the screen. It's still 2-2 on the batter.
- 1:11:11Pappas picks up the side, the right hander delivers, swing and a foul tipped.
- 1:11:17It was down around the knee, sinking away at that time, and Oliver was able to get just a piece of it.
- 1:11:22Still, ball two and strike two.
- 1:11:24Willie Starjo in the on-deck circle to the right will be up next.
- 1:11:30And in a final, Cleveland over Detroit, 8-2.
- 1:11:34McDowell won his eleventh ball game against four defeats and these from Pittsburgh.
- 1:11:40A kill for the loser, 4-5.
- 1:11:43Ball is full foul into the feet, just at the top of the first base dugout.
- 1:11:48Still 2-2 on the batter.
- 1:11:5240,918 looking on this afternoon.
- 1:11:59Fourth-largest foul during a regular season, fifth-largest if you count the World Series.
- 1:12:09Pappas strikes 2-2 to the batter, pops it up into left.
- 1:12:13Coming hard is Williams, Sano, and Kessinger going out.
- 1:12:16Kessinger, the shortstop, cuts across and makes the catch.
- 1:12:202-2 down in the last half of the fourth inning of the batter.
- 1:12:23Now is Willie Starjo.
- 1:12:26St. Will is way overdue.
- 1:12:29He leads the team in all runs with 14.
- 1:12:31He has 37 runs added in.
- 1:12:34He's right to the left field area in the first inning.
- 1:12:38He's looking for his first hit in this period.
- 1:12:46Strikes to the big wheel, nothing in one.
- 1:12:56Outfield around toward right and very deep, the pitch.
- 1:13:01He's headed to the outside corner, didn't get it. Ball one and strike one.
- 1:13:08In winning six in a row, the Bucks are four over 500 now.
- 1:13:13They've won 39 and lost 35.
- 1:13:15They've won more games in the Eastern Division than any other team.
- 1:13:19The 1-1 pitch, wing in the middle.
- 1:13:22Outside about a letter high.
- 1:13:24One ball, two strikes to Starjo.
- 1:13:34Willie digs back in.
- 1:13:35Pappas reads the sign, kicks and throws one-two to the batter.
- 1:13:39Let up and he strikes him out on a called strike.
- 1:13:43Third strikeout for Pappas.
- 1:13:45Team's tough on him completely that time in the inning.
- 1:13:47Three up, three down, no runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on.
- 1:13:51Through four innings of the second game of the doubleheader, Chicago won, Pittsburgh won.
- 1:13:57You know, I heard of an interesting thing that happened in a tavern the other night.
- 1:14:01An Iron City drinker said he could taste the difference between Iron City beer and any other brand.
- 1:14:07Well, his friend said that it just couldn't be done.
- 1:14:10So they covered his eyes and he put three glasses on the table.
- 1:14:14Then they poured a little trick on him and filled all three glasses with Iron City beer.
- 1:14:19And you know what? They didn't pull the wool over his taste.
- 1:14:22He said all three were Iron City.
- 1:14:25Really knew his iron, huh?
- 1:14:27But most Iron City drinkers do.
- 1:14:29They can recognize that bold, cold taste anywhere, anytime.
- 1:14:33Because Iron City drinkers expect a lot of taste from a beer.
- 1:14:37And Iron City delivers it, glass after glass after glass.
- 1:14:42Iron City delivers a taste a guy can really sink his first into.
- 1:14:46Find out what good beer taste is all about.
- 1:14:49Taste Iron City.
- 1:14:51Hey, once you get there, you'll never want to leave.
- 1:14:58Second game of the doubleheader, the final game at Forbes Field, 61-year history.
- 1:15:02In the 5-20-and-a-punch game of the doubleheader, 3-2, we tied 1-1 into the top of the third.
- 1:15:08In the leadoff batter, Don Kessinger will step in for the third time in this game.
- 1:15:12He single and scored a very low run to the Cubs in the first inning
- 1:15:16and was robbed of a possible base hit in the third inning
- 1:15:19on a good grab by Al Oliver, shoestring catch in the third.
- 1:15:25Kessinger has made himself into a very fine Major League ballplayer.
- 1:15:29Always had the good defensive tools, but went to switch hitting
- 1:15:32and has become very effective from the left side.
- 1:15:35Proved it with a looping single in the center field, and he is 2 for 3.
- 1:15:40That's the first hit that Jim Nelson has given up since the first inning.
- 1:15:51Paul Popovich from neighboring West Virginia steps in.
- 1:15:55He's single in the first inning.
- 1:15:57He was out on the tail end of a disputed double play.
- 1:16:02He walked back in the third.
- 1:16:05Jimmy Sun taking in the final game at Forbes.
- 1:16:17On ball by Nelson is down low, ball one.
- 1:16:22Jimmy's only had one, one, two, three innings.
- 1:16:26That was back in the second.
- 1:16:28Callison, Jeames, and Martin went out to strike out and two fly balls to live.
- 1:16:33And as Rob likes to say, he's been counter running through the range ups here.
- 1:16:38Throw to Furrits, Kessinger back safely.
- 1:16:44Bobby Moose, Dave Justy, and Luke Walker in that order,
- 1:16:48and Walker with a great clutch performance nailed down the first win.
- 1:16:51Throw to Furrits and a good play by Robertson thrown behind the runner.
- 1:16:55Bobby had the backhand of the ball to prevent it from going into the box seat.
- 1:17:02The Cubs by nature are not a good running ball club.
- 1:17:05They don't have any abundance of speed.
- 1:17:09Ball chopped off the first base side if you want to curl foul.
- 1:17:15Now Kessinger's second will come back to first.
- 1:17:20Giants a couple of years ago, the kind of ball club that's very seldom did any running,
- 1:17:25but they picked them up some speed with Bobby Vons in the lineup now.
- 1:17:30There's a little bit of a change in there.
- 1:17:32The Cubs so far have had only 12 still invasions. Pirates have had 28.
- 1:17:48All up to shallow rest, Turgell coming on quickly,
- 1:17:51has time to get there and he's got it for the first pitch.
- 1:17:56One out. The score is tied 1-1. We're in the top of the fifth of the second game
- 1:18:02of a doubleheader at Forbes.
- 1:18:05The runner third, Kessinger, and the better, Billy Williams.
- 1:18:12Williams single drove in Kessinger with the first run.
- 1:18:16I want you to know, sir, I know how surprised you feel, Chancellor Wesley Posberg
- 1:18:19at the University of Pittsburgh. I said, what are you putting in here?
- 1:18:22He said, you're sitting in the middle of our law school right now,
- 1:18:24and you should like it.
- 1:18:29Rob should know all about law school.
- 1:18:34Billy Williams takes a pitch down low, one ball and on the scuff.
- 1:18:46Chancellor Wesley Posberg here to take in the final game.
- 1:18:50Of course, this is the property of the University of Pittsburgh,
- 1:18:53and this is going to be a law school, I understand.
- 1:18:56Starting this fall, they're going to do some construction.
- 1:19:00Fly ball, deep to left, going back at Sturgill, still going,
- 1:19:03and he's near the wall, he makes the grab, oh, he's got the ball.
- 1:19:06Holding his second, it catches him. He'll come to third, the long throw it is.
- 1:19:09Not in time, he flies ahead of the tag.
- 1:19:12Hebner arguing now with Barlich, and he's jaw to jaw with him.
- 1:19:15He said he came off the bag. Now Barlich is right on top of him.
- 1:19:20And Hebner is really fuming with Hal Barlich at third base.
- 1:19:26Sturgill had the ball in his glove, and as we mentioned before,
- 1:19:29this has become a very serious problem for outfielders right now,
- 1:19:325'30 or close to it here.
- 1:19:35Alou had troubles earlier, and Sturgill at times caught the ball over his shoulder
- 1:19:39like a football player going for a touchdown.
- 1:19:41The ball bobbled out of his glove, he was about three or four feet from the wall,
- 1:19:45picked it up, hustled the throw to third base, and the strong throw almost got Kessinger.
- 1:19:50It's going to be over double.
- 1:19:52Kessinger goes to third base, Williams moves on to second base.
- 1:20:01The batter coming out is Jimmy Hickman.
- 1:20:04He's 0 for 2, but they're going to be gently walking him to take their shot with Roddy Sato.
- 1:20:11Sturgill had room, had the ball in his glove, but dropped it.
- 1:20:19The walk will be the fourth of the ballgames given up by Jimmy Nelson.
- 1:20:24This is the first intentional walk.
- 1:20:37And that will do it.
- 1:20:39It's a ball four.
- 1:20:41So they're loaded up, Hickman at first base, W. Williams at second,
- 1:20:44and Don Kessinger has moved it through.
- 1:20:48Ron Sato, who is 0 for 2 in this ballgame,
- 1:20:52flied to right field his last time up.
- 1:20:57Well, the Pits came back with some football last year to finish respectable under Carl DePasca.
- 1:21:04They're looking for good things in 70.
- 1:21:06They're here and we're hoping this is the start of something big for the Bucks right now.
- 1:21:12So let's watch this afternoon in Montreal 3-2.
- 1:21:17Here's a pitch to Sato off the frisk, fouled back out of play.
- 1:21:22Only one out, the Pirates are hoping for the strikeout here by Nelson,
- 1:21:26or possibly the ground ball double play.
- 1:21:31They're a whole lot of speed, Hickman at first base through Sato at the plate.
- 1:21:37But there's an awful lot of power at the plate, and Sato has only hit seven this year.
- 1:21:43Palm ball just in time.
- 1:21:45One ball, one strike.
- 1:21:47Rick Reikert has hit his ninth in the 12th with one on.
- 1:21:50Washington wins that ballgame in 12 innings, 4-3.
- 1:22:00Thinking positive for 6-4-3.
- 1:22:05Here's one-one. Changeup is just a little bit hot.
- 1:22:08Roy Sato just checked you off that bit.
- 1:22:12Almost into the letter. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:22:21A lot of people you haven't seen in a while, dropping ball to see this game.
- 1:22:24Chuck Boyle, former Canada, with KDKA, and now with NBC.
- 1:22:29Dropping ball is short, Alley on two hops, and Asuraki to go to first.
- 1:22:32It is in time for two.
- 1:22:35Nelson flickers out of it.
- 1:22:40A six to four to three double play.
- 1:22:42Look at the crowd.
- 1:22:54Fifth inning for Chicago, no runs, two hits.
- 1:22:57There is a stand up there.
- 1:22:59We go to the bottom of the fifth, it's still tied one-one.
- 1:23:03You know, one of the sweetest sounds a batter can hear is that sort of whack,
- 1:23:07that big crack of that ball in the back, right on the back part.
- 1:23:11When he hears that, he knows he's got a shot at sending it out of there all the way.
- 1:23:15Now, there's a sound that's music to a bird drinker's ears, too.
- 1:23:19The sound of an Iron City snap-top can.
- 1:23:22When you hear that pop, you know what's coming.
- 1:23:25Iron City's great beer taste.
- 1:23:27Each snap-top can packs 12 big ounces of bold, cold Iron City beer.
- 1:23:32Every sip of every can is alive with a taste you can really sink your thirst into.
- 1:23:37And those Iron City six-packs are pure convenience.
- 1:23:40They're quick to chill, easy to carry, mighty easy to store.
- 1:23:44So the next time your thirst comes up, crack open a cold can of Iron
- 1:23:48and try the taste that's made Iron City, Pittsburgh's number one beer.
- 1:23:53Iron City, hey, once you get there, you'll never want to leave.
- 1:23:59Forty thousand, nine hundred and eighteen, buzzing here at Forbes Field.
- 1:24:05The final game at Lady Forbes.
- 1:24:08We'll close it out today.
- 1:24:10And, boy, they sure enjoy a whale of a ball game in a second game,
- 1:24:13much like they did in the front.
- 1:24:15Pirates won the front game three to two.
- 1:24:18Six in a row, we won.
- 1:24:20The question leaves it off, curve ball by Pappas is outside, ball one.
- 1:24:29Fans try to get something started with some rhythmic applause.
- 1:24:35I don't think that a rooting cow doesn't help a ball club.
- 1:24:38One-oh-fix, lined in the hole, running it upfield.
- 1:24:41Big hit for Robertson.
- 1:24:43That's only the second hit off Mel Pappas.
- 1:24:45The other one left the ball park, as Bob described,
- 1:24:48a long run by Al Oliver with two down on the first.
- 1:24:53Pappas has been tough.
- 1:24:56Mixing the pitches effectively, slider, fastball,
- 1:25:00and a pitch we haven't seen as usual a lot.
- 1:25:04A change up to half a screwball type of thing.
- 1:25:11Gene Alley, who can do a lot of things with the bat.
- 1:25:15He's funning this time.
- 1:25:16He's going to hit the first base out.
- 1:25:18It's going to Turrell Fowl, picked up by Jimmy Hickman.
- 1:25:22You know, Alley was funning.
- 1:25:24He's had a look, however, at third base coach Frank Oceac.
- 1:25:29Bob Robertson, surprisingly, for his size, 200 pounds, just a little bit over,
- 1:25:35can pick him up and put him down pretty good.
- 1:25:39And Alley's ability to punch the ball to right field is something
- 1:25:42that I might be thinking about.
- 1:25:47Cubs are fighting that way in the outfield.
- 1:25:50Cleo James about 10 feet to right center.
- 1:25:53He's going to pitch his foul-tip, held by the catcher,
- 1:25:56throw to second, not in time.
- 1:25:58He's sealed it.
- 1:26:04The hit and run was on.
- 1:26:06Robertson beats the throw to second by J.C. Martin.
- 1:26:10It was a foul-tip, held by Martin, but he didn't get Robertson at second.
- 1:26:16Bobby, I'll surprise you.
- 1:26:18You'll recall, in a recent home stand, he went from first to third on a wild pitch.
- 1:26:26Now the go-ahead runner, second base, nobody out,
- 1:26:30bottom half of the fifth tie ball game 1-1.
- 1:26:33Alley now will try to get him to third.
- 1:26:35He's going to pitch a foul-tip, not held by Martin.
- 1:26:42Now the counter holds it, nothing in two.
- 1:26:46Bobby Ross will be in New York tomorrow, State Stadium.
- 1:26:51Gene was checking the water loss percentages, and that's now the loss at 5-35.
- 1:26:58We're going to win their second ball game.
- 1:27:00We'll be at 5-3-3.
- 1:27:04Here's the pitch.
- 1:27:05Off the fifth, hopped up on the first base side, giving chase to Hickman in foul territory,
- 1:27:11and he's got it.
- 1:27:12So Robertson forced a hole at second base.
- 1:27:14His alley hops out to the first base for Jim Hickman.
- 1:27:29Let's pause for station identification on the pilot baseball network.
- 1:27:35Covering all bases, a topic on the perspective, some of these 5-8 PM on KKT.
- 1:27:49Jerry May the batter takes the pitch by Pappas down low, ball one.
- 1:28:00Jerry May walks in the front ball game in the eighth inning with the bases loaded off Phil Regan,
- 1:28:06produced the winning run in that one, 3-2.
- 1:28:09Cups on this wide, he doesn't get it, even to count it, one ball and one strike.
- 1:28:16I tell you, Pappas has had excellent control in this one game.
- 1:28:21Has not walked anybody, and for the most part, has been out in front of everybody.
- 1:28:34Checked Robertson at second to fastball, put foul off the first base side.
- 1:28:38Hickman might have a play.
- 1:28:39Now he can't get to it, about five rows back and about three.
- 1:28:52People out early trying to get into fourth field this morning.
- 1:28:56Boy, that was a welcome sign.
- 1:29:00They're going to be late trying to get out, too.
- 1:29:03Take two, who gives?
- 1:29:05No place to go until seven o'clock tomorrow morning, I guess.
- 1:29:09That's the most time you ring in at the old time clock.
- 1:29:15Remember, I used to do that with Beth Linton and Steele,
- 1:29:18carry that lunch fail in the offseason.
- 1:29:23Seventy-five cents an hour, what do you say?
- 1:29:25Third ball, Jeff Smith is outside, count evens, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:29:31What are you, a riveter?
- 1:29:33Just a good old common ordinary lever.
- 1:29:36I used to shovel very well.
- 1:29:38I've been there, buddy.
- 1:29:39Every time you go by the lock in Rochester, remember,
- 1:29:41I lived under that like a sand dog all one summer with a jackhammer.
- 1:29:45Trying to burrow out of there and get up alive.
- 1:29:50Two-two pitch, checked off by Gary.
- 1:29:52Now he goes around, says the first base on fire, foul-of-fire.
- 1:29:56Tried to save the swing, couldn't do it.
- 1:30:00Today is the second victim, number four, and Bobby Robertson,
- 1:30:04who opened with a single, got the second on a steal, is still there.
- 1:30:08Pappas trying to pitch out of it.
- 1:30:10They will intentionally walk.
- 1:30:12Bill and Ezra, I'd like you to go to Jimmy Nelson.
- 1:30:17This is the first walk issued by Pappas.
- 1:30:21Scores around the National League, Houston was knocked off by Cincinnati.
- 1:30:26Tony Perez did his 27th and the 9th, 3-2.
- 1:30:30Wanting pitcher there was Clay Carroll, and released was Nolan.
- 1:30:34Wilson lost it.
- 1:30:36Los Angeles leads San Diego, 2-0 after 5-1-2, Roberts against Alan Foster.
- 1:30:42And in a complete ballgame up at Montreal, the one you're interested in,
- 1:30:46the New York Mets were knocked off, 3-2.
- 1:30:50Sadecki lost it.
- 1:30:51Carl Morton picked up the win.
- 1:30:54Marshall homers to New York, Baker and Staub, and Staub's home run,
- 1:30:58and he aces one on, one at home for Montreal, and gives the Bucks a chance to
- 1:31:04just finish two percentage points after the rage activity from first place in the Houston Division.
- 1:31:13Nams is the first, Roberts in the second.
- 1:31:16Check swing, it's fouled off the front foot of the pitcher, Jimmy Nelson,
- 1:31:21and the count's nothing in one.
- 1:31:23Nelson had a bad hitting pitcher by any means.
- 1:31:27Had a pretty good debut in the Major Leagues, and hasn't had too bad a performance after that either.
- 1:31:34Opened up with a strikeout of maize, got McCurdy in a double play, and then got up and banged a single.
- 1:31:46Said he wanted to be a short stopper to catch it, but he's become a pretty good pitcher.
- 1:31:49Chopper hits the third base weekly, Sado holds a short outgrowth, and it is in.
- 1:31:53How's John Kripke, hits the drop to the wall.
- 1:31:59There's safe all around.
- 1:32:01Robertson a third, and there's a second, and Nelson, safe a third on the air on Jimmy and Hidra.
- 1:32:09Boy, that was a big break for the Bucks.
- 1:32:11Sado, who were right there at the knees, but Hickman lost the ball, and the Pirates have him loaded up.
- 1:32:18Robertson a third, Bill Andrews, second, Jimmy Nelson a first, and the pesky guy, Mattie Elu at the plate.
- 1:32:28He's also two on this ball game.
- 1:32:32And he hits him four times and drops the foul.
- 1:32:35Happens, and we'll wind up the pitch to Mattie.
- 1:32:37Full foul off the first base shot out of play, strike one.
- 1:32:43Really, sometimes on that infield at this time of night throws off that left side of the dime,
- 1:32:48and you're throwing out of the scoreboard numbers and all those white shirts,
- 1:32:51and that guy's first base is looking for a ball out of a lot of white.
- 1:32:55It's very well happened, because the sun's starting to set down there,
- 1:32:58and it's reflecting off the box seats right back of Sado and where he was coming from.
- 1:33:06Come on, Mattie, your one pitch inside a good save by J.C. Martin, prevented a wild pitch.
- 1:33:12It's like a hard splatter.
- 1:33:15Martin made a great play to prevent a wild pitch on that one.
- 1:33:19He had to go way to his right.
- 1:33:20I don't know how Elu kept him getting hit.
- 1:33:23Now the count is even to the ball on the side.
- 1:33:26We're tied, one-one, but a base hit could end that very quickly.
- 1:33:32Two down.
- 1:33:34We'll wind up the one-one pitch.
- 1:33:36Down low, blocked by Martin, can't find it, but it stays right in front of the plate.
- 1:33:41Another good save by Martin.
- 1:33:47Two balls and a strike on Mattie Elu.
- 1:33:50Pirates took advantage of wildness in the front ball game to win that one as Phil Regan came on,
- 1:33:57dropped the base of Rodin, and then walked in the winning run with Jerry Mayer back.
- 1:34:08Elroy Fick, the greatest reliever in piracy in Navy Horde,
- 1:34:12made it to the big ball, dropped into the booth, viewing the final game.
- 1:34:16It's 4-2, one pitch, chopped in the hole.
- 1:34:20On to base hit.
- 1:34:21Robertson scores.
- 1:34:22Razorocky is coming to the point, the throw not in time.
- 1:34:26The ball goes to second, and the Pirates lead it 3-1.
- 1:34:55Now I want to win, but I have to feel sorry for Jim Hickman out there at first base.
- 1:35:02That guy is going through torches right now, Nelly.
- 1:35:06He sure is, but I'll tell you, if there's any reason why the Cubs have been in the spot they are,
- 1:35:11you've got to put it right on his shoulders.
- 1:35:13He's carried that ball quite often, to be honest.
- 1:35:16Hevner, first ball hitting, fouls it off the first base, and strike one.
- 1:35:22He's a guy that's made himself into a very fine hitter.
- 1:35:26He was not known for anything but striking out a lot and hitting the ground ball double plays.
- 1:35:31Last year he suddenly came alive, very good money player,
- 1:35:36came up with a very costly 11, an opponent that's taken advantage of it,
- 1:35:41and a big single by Matt Ealyard.
- 1:35:433-1 we lead, it's down and going at all.
- 1:35:473-1 changeup, moves outside on Ricky, turned over the fastball.
- 1:35:52One ball and one shot.
- 1:35:54It's been a very effective pitch for Kappes in this ball game.
- 1:36:03Now these two halves will be one-and-tally, but it doesn't matter.
- 1:36:07We have five on the right, it's going to curve foul.
- 1:36:12Ricky hit a shot right down the right field line, curve.
- 1:36:16Now ten feet to the right of the foul ball.
- 1:36:19Larry Gura, who worked in the front ball game, a left hitter,
- 1:36:23is up and popping down the Chicago bullpen.
- 1:36:39Jim Nelson at third base.
- 1:36:41Matt Ealyard second.
- 1:36:42Matt lead away to wind up the one-two pitch, five-ball left field,
- 1:36:46giving James Williams, hiding the sun, and near the scoreboard,
- 1:36:49he's got it, and a pretty well-eared ball on the opposite field by Ricky Evans.
- 1:36:55The Pirates take the lead, two runs on two hits, one error.
- 1:37:00We stand up there, and after five innings of play in the second and final game
- 1:37:05at Forbes Field, the Pirates now lead it 3-1.
- 1:37:09Most Pirate fans are beer fans, too, and just as they like a lot of action in the game,
- 1:37:15they like a lot of taste in a beer.
- 1:37:18That's why most Pirate fans ask for a cold iron when their thirsts come up,
- 1:37:23because thirst-quenching taste is what Iron City beer is all about,
- 1:37:28bold and cold and live every sip of the way, glass after glass, bottle after bottle.
- 1:37:34Iron City comes on with a taste you can really sink your thirst into,
- 1:37:39and that Iron City taste is fresh, because Iron City beer doesn't have to come
- 1:37:43a long way to get to your tavern or your distributor, and once it gets there,
- 1:37:48Iron City doesn't sit around.
- 1:37:50It sells, my friends.
- 1:37:51I mean, it sells.
- 1:37:53So every iron you drink is as fresh as can be.
- 1:37:57Next time your thirst comes up, let it down with Iron City.
- 1:38:01Hey, once you get there, you'll never want to leave.
- 1:38:05Well, let's see.
- 1:38:12Here in the Sixth, Chancellor Wesley Boswell just went to call Milly to say,
- 1:38:16I think I better stay for a while.
- 1:38:18I'll be a little late for dinner.
- 1:38:20And I said, well, I've got to be listening to the game.
- 1:38:25A fairly good group of cadets came out of West Point.
- 1:38:28Chancellor was there, a fellow named Bill Farr is a great athlete in gymnastics,
- 1:38:34and now our financial wizard around here, Roland Capinella,
- 1:38:38and there were three other fellows that were rather well-known, Blanchard, Davis, and Tucker.
- 1:38:46They never knew a losing season.
- 1:38:49All right, we have now Johnny Kellerson who's stuck out in the walk standing in.
- 1:39:09Jim Nelson leading three to one here in the top of the Sixth.
- 1:39:15He's got over 40,918 and nobody leaving.
- 1:39:19The early part of this game, Nelson Pombal, he might as well have put it on the shelf.
- 1:39:27Well, let's not throw it for strikes, just show it.
- 1:39:29But he was trying to throw it for strikes and it got him in trouble.
- 1:39:32Let's see if he can bring it back.
- 1:39:35He could run it through it for strike two.
- 1:39:38A lot of times a good pitch, which is that pitch right now, is a Pombal.
- 1:39:44But if it isn't coming for you, you just waste it and go to your other stuff,
- 1:39:49and then if it comes back, then you go to it.
- 1:39:53And Jerry May is the type of a catcher that will bring it back in there for him,
- 1:39:58if it's at all possible.
- 1:40:07The O2 pitch, there's the Pombal, pull down to Mazurowski.
- 1:40:11He'll have him on to Robertson.
- 1:40:17John Callison retired four to three.
- 1:40:19The batter now will be Cleo James.
- 1:40:21He'll line the left and with it five-pitch.
- 1:40:26Following this game, we'll have everything going for the fans here.
- 1:40:32And I know, of course, that nobody will get out of line
- 1:40:36because we're just going to have a few things given away.
- 1:40:38All the baseball caps have been autographed.
- 1:40:41They'll be awarded some 50 prizes, some of them, and bases and what have you.
- 1:40:47But this property here belongs to the University of Pittsburgh.
- 1:40:51And there's a strike.
- 1:40:53And Jehovah's Witnesses will be in here for a big contrast.
- 1:40:58That fine-order group will be in here, and then there'll be other things going on
- 1:41:02in the University of St. Louis.
- 1:41:05There's other plans, and ultimately, of course, this ballpark will be dismantled
- 1:41:11and School of Law and other schools involved in the university program
- 1:41:16will be in here in the next three to six years.
- 1:41:19No balls, two strikes here to Cleo James.
- 1:41:22There's a fastball outside all the way to the backstop.
- 1:41:30A warning down the left field line for the Cubs.
- 1:41:36A left-hander will pick him up in a moment right now.
- 1:41:39That's what they get in and go on.
- 1:41:41They want to be ready to hit for Pappas.
- 1:41:45Good.
- 1:41:47Strikeout.
- 1:41:52That's the second now.
- 1:41:53Here's J.T. Martin.
- 1:41:54He tried to left and he drew a war.
- 1:41:56The Pirates leading three to one, won the first game three to two.
- 1:42:01First game ever played here in this park, Chicago won it three to two in 1909,
- 1:42:06and Honus Wagner in that year set an all-time high for stolen bases in the World Series
- 1:42:12against the Detroit Tigers and Ticots.
- 1:42:18Foul back.
- 1:42:19The Pirates played in the first World Series, but not here.
- 1:42:25It was against Boston in 1903 in the first World Series ever played.
- 1:42:30My memory is they went nine games.
- 1:42:32That is, it was a nine-game series.
- 1:42:34I don't know how long it went, but they would have gone better than that.
- 1:42:38Here's the 0-1 to Martin.
- 1:42:40Foul ball off the sinker, 0-2.
- 1:42:45That would have been then exposition park for the games that were played here in Pittsburgh
- 1:42:50between the Boatsocks and the Pirates.
- 1:42:54Then Mr. Dreyfus built this ballpark and his son-in-law, Bill Benswanger,
- 1:43:02kept the rich prediction going.
- 1:43:04Bill wanted to be here today, but couldn't be,
- 1:43:09and he's one of the great pioneers in the game of baseball, Bill Benswanger.
- 1:43:15And he's not to be forgotten by all who were dear to baseball in this area.
- 1:43:20One ball, two strikes.
- 1:43:23Popped him up, and Ebener is looking for it.
- 1:43:26Now he's bird-dogging him behind him, and he'll take it.
- 1:43:29Now he takes it, so he's out of the side.
- 1:43:32Three up and three down, and we go down to the bottom of the sixth leading three to one.
- 1:43:37You know, it will be pretty hard to try and predict a pennant winner this season.
- 1:43:41I have to admit the St. Louis Cardinals look pretty good.
- 1:43:44Our own Bucks look even better.
- 1:43:46And, of course, there are the ever-amazing Mets.
- 1:43:50But I have to say this, too, when it comes to predicting a pennant winner,
- 1:43:54well, that's something else.
- 1:43:56But when it comes to predicting a pennant-winning beer, there isn't any contest at all.
- 1:44:01Everybody knows Iron City beer leads the league, been number one for a long, long time.
- 1:44:06And Iron City will stay on top, and there's a good reason why.
- 1:44:10Iron City's taste, bold and cold, alive every sip of the way,
- 1:44:16glass after golden glass, inning after inning.
- 1:44:19Iron City comes on with a taste you can really think you're thirsting to.
- 1:44:23So the next time your beer thirst comes up, whet it down with a winner.
- 1:44:28Try the taste of Pittsburgh's number one beer, Iron City.
- 1:44:33Hey, once you get there, you'll never want to lose.
- 1:44:43All right, ready now to move into the bottom of the sixth,
- 1:44:46and the first-inning for the
- 1:44:48U-6 Mother, who hit his sixth mom of the year,
- 1:44:51tie up the game back in the first inning, will be the lead-off batter.
- 1:44:55Men's star, Gooden, Bobby Robertson, against Milt Pappas.
- 1:44:59If we can take what you're hosting with doing in the sixth inning as an indication,
- 1:45:03this will be the last inning for Milt.
- 1:45:06Ready, we're warming.
- 1:45:10G-U-R-A.
- 1:45:17Way back she goes, and off the wall.
- 1:45:21Callison comes up firing, and it's a double standing up for Oliver.
- 1:45:26That's the fourth DDS, two of them for six baseman.
- 1:45:33And the batter now is going to be Willie Stuck, who's open to, by the left end,
- 1:45:39what's called an open end.
- 1:45:41Now Gooden getting up again.
- 1:45:45And Andy Gates is out of the picture for the second.
- 1:45:50Milt Pappas with one of the second in the hell out of it.
- 1:45:56Stargill drops a foul down to right field, and our bullpen,
- 1:46:03got it like a cubby of quail.
- 1:46:07You know, Bob, if this keeps up, Gooden may be on the ball game a little earlier
- 1:46:11than Lee would like to have him in there.
- 1:46:14Yeah, but he's going to try to get three out, if he can out of Pappas.
- 1:46:21You and I both know because he doesn't want to have to put him in
- 1:46:24and swing out another hitter.
- 1:46:27There's a dive hit very deep to center.
- 1:46:30James started in, now drifting back way out toward the monument.
- 1:46:34And he makes a strong throw, but Oliver is tagged and come over safely to third.
- 1:46:41That'll bring up Bobby Robinson, who's single,
- 1:46:51who leads the Buckeyes into a rally in the fifth inning.
- 1:46:55Wow, but two runs that score that anywhere unearned.
- 1:46:59Due to an error, it's about to nonetheless accept the loss.
- 1:47:13Now they bring the infield up, and Bobby taking a long look at Frank Osiak.
- 1:47:18They've switched off Gura to a right-hander.
- 1:47:26Bobby Rodriguez.
- 1:47:31I feel around the left infield is up.
- 1:47:33The pitch from Pappas and there's an error, and now left field line, way out of play.
- 1:47:43That's J.C. Martin, now quickly to say something to Milk.
- 1:48:02We don't want to make him the hard way, I'll tell you that.
- 1:48:13I think the back line on that's two and a half.
- 1:48:21But we're going to try to make it that way for them.
- 1:48:25If we won six in a row, they've lost nine in a row, and that's their season nine.
- 1:48:30Make no mistake about it though, Chicago is anything but out of this pinning race.
- 1:48:36Anybody has a blocked up.
- 1:48:40It's going to be a bubble job right now, that's very hidden.
- 1:48:43It's going to bubble your blood for you.
- 1:48:47When we come home to three others and we meet those Cincinnati Reds, wowee.
- 1:48:54Fichter-Robinson inside, I think I'd be getting my tickets for that one, 16th of July.
- 1:49:02When the 100 is going to remain open, you won't be able to get your tickets to three of them,
- 1:49:07you'll get them at the regular outlets.
- 1:49:09Remember that, ladies and gentlemen, don't write the three rivers, write the Forbes field.
- 1:49:14Come to when the 100, J.C. Murphy store, downtown ticket office, ticket shop, any of those outlets.
- 1:49:20One-one Fichter-Robinson ball inside.
- 1:49:24Come on, come on, come on.
- 1:49:43Two ball, then a strike.
- 1:49:46And a pitch.
- 1:49:48Well, his deeps were left.
- 1:49:50Williams coming up, the tag by Oliver, here's a strong high throw.
- 1:49:54Oliver scores.
- 1:50:06So it's four to one.
- 1:50:17Dave Say, a Pennsylvania winner in state college.
- 1:50:21I haven't said we may never lose another game for so long, it isn't even funny,
- 1:50:26but he seems to think I've been saying anything.
- 1:50:28Said it would win this one, he wants me to just shut your mouth.
- 1:50:31All right, David, you button up your typewriter and we'll be even.
- 1:50:40Alley up here, it's all for two.
- 1:50:43Ball inside, one and O.
- 1:50:45Have you heard me say we may never lose a game for how long is it been?
- 1:50:49I know, I first time I heard you say it, and I think the last this year was down in Clayton.
- 1:50:54That's right, I did it as a gag.
- 1:50:56I never heard you say it like that before.
- 1:50:58Ball inside, two and O.
- 1:51:07Well, I know Dave, he's a good writer, but he's right.
- 1:51:11We're not counting any chickens, we haven't been, it's lots of ways to go,
- 1:51:16but it's just great to be in the thick of things.
- 1:51:19Two O pitch now, Alley.
- 1:51:21High ball three, three and O.
- 1:51:27This game here is not over.
- 1:51:32But we know one thing, it's the last game that will be played here,
- 1:51:36and I can say we may never lose another game in this park,
- 1:51:39and we're right, three and O.
- 1:51:46I can't believe I can say that.
- 1:51:49Three balls and a strike.
- 1:51:52I feel it out of the right on Gene Alley.
- 1:51:54Happers into the wind at the three-one pitch,
- 1:51:56hunched it foul back up on the net.
- 1:52:07Oliver opened up with a double off the right field wall,
- 1:52:10schedule fly deep to center, and Oliver came over after the catch.
- 1:52:19And then Robertson scored him over a rope to deep left.
- 1:52:24Three-two pitch.
- 1:52:26High ball to right field, Jason Callison back, looking up in that murderous sun.
- 1:52:30Nice catch by John.
- 1:52:32Right on the wall on the warning truck out there.
- 1:52:35A run on one hit, no errors, and nobody left.
- 1:52:38At the end of sixth, the parks lead at four to one.
- 1:52:41We want to mention something here that shows how Iron City will go to any lengths
- 1:52:45to make you feel at home, all the way to Florida, in fact.
- 1:52:49Iron City beer has joined the Thunberg crowd on United Airlines' nonstop flights to Miami.
- 1:52:55When you're flying to and from Miami, ask your stewardess for a nice cold glass
- 1:53:00of Pittsburgh's number one beer, Iron City.
- 1:53:04It makes those friendly skies even friendlier.
- 1:53:08Iron City beer, the beer drinker's beer.
- 1:53:12Middle three innings are sent your way by Iron City beer.
- 1:53:35The nation's number one halftime is on the world's number one station,
- 1:53:54the Pittsburgh Lums.
- 1:54:07Glenn Beckard will bat for Pappas here, as the top of the seventh inning is about to get underway
- 1:54:12at Forbes Field before 40,918.
- 1:54:17In the first game of the doubleheader, Pittsburgh 3 in Chicago 2,
- 1:54:22as the Pirates extended their winning streak to six straights,
- 1:54:25and the Cubs losing streak to nine in a row.
- 1:54:28And now through six innings to play, the Bucs have four runs and four hits,
- 1:54:33and the Cubs one run and five hits.
- 1:54:36Beckard, the right-handed batter, setting out the second game of the doubleheader,
- 1:54:40takes the first pitch low for a ball.
- 1:54:42What a nutting.
- 1:54:43Beckard batting at 268.
- 1:54:47He has a couple of home runs, 18 runs battered in.
- 1:54:52Curve across, ball one and strike one.
- 1:54:56Larry Gura, who saw action in the first game of this doubleheader,
- 1:55:01continues to keep warming the bullpen down the line.
- 1:55:04That is a palm ball that fooled Beckard.
- 1:55:07Oh, he stepped to the front part of the box that time,
- 1:55:10and it was leaning and then tried to hold up, then leaned again,
- 1:55:13and about that time it was a little too late.
- 1:55:15Beautiful pitch. Here's a one-two delivery.
- 1:55:18Fastball to the outside.
- 1:55:20It's all the way back to the screen.
- 1:55:22Two and two on Glenn Beckard.
- 1:55:25John Kessinger in the on-deck circle to the left, and then Paul Popovich.
- 1:55:31Buck outfield playing straight away.
- 1:55:34Stargeo, Alou, and Oliver.
- 1:55:36Around the infield, Ebner, Alley, Maseroski, and Robertson.
- 1:55:40May catching and Nelson on the mound.
- 1:55:43He has won two and lost none since coming up from Columbus.
- 1:55:48Curve is bowled back onto the screen.
- 1:55:50It gets over the screen, so the folks down below have a lot of fun fighting for that souvenir.
- 1:55:57And remember, there will be a lot of souvenirs to be given away at the conclusion of this game.
- 1:56:04Here's the two-two pitch.
- 1:56:06It is lined to the shortstop, one out.
- 1:56:13We go to the top of the cup batting order, and the left-hander hitting John Kessinger.
- 1:56:19Singleton scored in the first inning, Clyde to right in the third, and Singleton in the fifth inning.
- 1:56:24In addition to this being the final game, this would be a wonderful 36th wedding anniversary for Jane and Tom Johnson.
- 1:56:32So congratulations to them, one of our proud owners, and such an investment of the baseball club,
- 1:56:38and it would be a great going away, not going away, going away from Forbes Field, but an anniversary present for Jane and Tom.
- 1:56:45And many happy years to come, too, to the Johnson family, as the pitch is outside for a ball, one or nothing.
- 1:56:52Kessinger, two out of three in this ball game.
- 1:56:55He was shut out in the first game, nothing before.
- 1:56:58So he is 3-4-11 in the series.
- 1:57:04Swing and a foul is hit.
- 1:57:25Here's the pitch, a little high for a ball.
- 1:57:33Kessinger the batter, a front-fist underway in Chicago, the second team of the doubleheaders.
- 1:57:40Wow, I'll tell you about it in a moment.
- 1:57:42There's a side call, two and two on the batter.
- 1:57:46Minnesota got four on the top of the first.
- 1:57:48Chicago came back with six on the last of the first.
- 1:57:54Four to one in favor of Pittsburgh here.
- 1:57:58Oh, he's hit down the left of the line.
- 1:58:00Coming hard to star Joe.
- 1:58:02He can't get it.
- 1:58:03Into the bullpen just out of his reach, still two and two on the batter.
- 1:58:09Joe Given, who was boosting up a couple of innings back in this ball game, is again ready should they need him.
- 1:58:17And Bruce Delcan, the right-hander, is now throwing also.
- 1:58:22Larry Gura, a left-hander in the bullpen, will the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:58:31He's been joined by Rodriguez.
- 1:58:38Here's the 2-2 delivery.
- 1:58:41Swing and a foul back. It's still two and two on the batter.
- 1:58:53One out and nobody on.
- 1:58:55Boy, the folks are having a great time here this afternoon.
- 1:59:00Nelson works 2-2 to the batter.
- 1:59:02Ground ball to the right side.
- 1:59:03Mazurocki to his left side comes up and it throws on the first at times.
- 1:59:07Kessinger is an ECL.
- 1:59:11Two up and two down in the top of the seventh inning and the batter will be the second baseman, Paul Popovich.
- 1:59:18San Francisco and Atlanta are tied at four through nine innings of play.
- 1:59:24The game is being played at candlestick.
- 1:59:32Popovich, singled in the right center field in the first inning, walked on a 3-2 pitch in the third and then slide to the left.
- 1:59:39So he's 1-2 against Nelson, the pitch.
- 1:59:44Outside, just off the corner for a ball. It's one and nothing.
- 1:59:52Just after six here in Pittsburgh.
- 1:59:56Swing and a high pop-up. May coming down the line. So is Hebner in foul territory.
- 2:00:02Richie stays with him, looking into that brilliant sunshine as he made a one-and-stab of the ball to retire to the side.
- 2:00:11Nothing across in the Chicago half of the seventh inning.
- 2:00:15The Bucks coming in to bat in the pitch half of inning number seven.
- 2:00:19The last time they'll do this tradition in this part, leading four to one.
- 2:00:25Start of listening in black and white. See what a difference a coat of Pittsburgh paint can make.
- 2:00:30What's going on?
- 2:00:32That spring willow green going on. That microphone, avocado.
- 2:00:36Shouldn't you be painting on color television?
- 2:00:39No, no. People at home keep horsing with the knobs until they've turned apricot into banana.
- 2:00:44So you're asking them to imagine your color?
- 2:00:47Until they can get into the Pittsburgh dealer and see for themselves, yes. Kill the rainbow.
- 2:00:52Rainbow on radio.
- 2:00:56Was that a colorful rainbow?
- 2:01:09Fantastic. Where can I see Pittsburgh paint in person?
- 2:01:13That man holding his hand over his ear will tell you.
- 2:01:17In Edna, your Pittsburgh paint stealer is Winchell Hardware, 346 Butler Street.
- 2:01:22And in East Liberty, there's a Pittsburgh paint center located at 1351 Washington Boulevard.
- 2:01:34Forty thousand nine hundred and eighteen looking on as the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates do battle
- 2:01:43and a doubleheader at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. The Cubs won the first game three to two over the Cubs.
- 2:01:52And we lead in this game four to one. And Nellie, we've got a new left-hander.
- 2:01:57And May will lead it off in the home half of the Saladini.
- 2:02:21The Cubs are beginning to settle back into their seats now. Left-hander ready to go to work.
- 2:02:27Curve ball picked up the outside corner. Started it way out wide that time.
- 2:02:32Broke it in on the corner at it is. Nothing in one to Jerry May.
- 2:02:36May has fly to the right the other and struck out in two trips against Pappas in this ballgame.
- 2:02:43Milled work the first six innings.
- 2:02:47There's a curve, a car. No balls to strike.
- 2:02:53Continuing to have action in the bullpen for Chicago.
- 2:02:58Jim Colburn now throwing.
- 2:03:03Ball got away from the bullpen catcher and the home plate umpire spotted it and called time.
- 2:03:10In the outfield for the Cubs in the second game, we're looking at William James and Calliphan
- 2:03:15with Sanno Kessinger-Papovich and Nickman on the inter-defense.
- 2:03:19Pitch in close to May. One ball and two strikes.
- 2:03:23Hyatt caught the game yesterday in the first game of the doubleheader.
- 2:03:26J.C. Martin working behind the plate this afternoon.
- 2:03:34Here's the one-two pitch. In close for a ball and it's two and two now.
- 2:03:43Now Zorowski in the on-deck circle to the right.
- 2:03:47Two up next and the third man up in the inning will be the pitcher, Jim Nelson.
- 2:03:57May waiting on the ball to strike to delivery.
- 2:04:00Here comes, he takes low for a ball.
- 2:04:03He's getting ahead of the right-hander better. No balls, two strikes. The string has run out.
- 2:04:14Home plate umpire Vargo looking over the left shoulder.
- 2:04:20May waiting on a three-two delivery. With a flick of the glove, Jury is shaken off the side.
- 2:04:25Now he comes back and strikes him out.
- 2:04:29That's Jury that time on a breaking pitch. Second time May has gone down via the strikeout route in this ball game.
- 2:04:37First strikeout for Larry Gura and it brings up Mazurowski.
- 2:04:43New York Yankees have knocked off Bonce at eight to two. Bonce is the winner.
- 2:04:48Bonce is the loser.
- 2:04:53May struck out and drawn an intentional walk. This is a strike call and it's nothing in one.
- 2:05:05The pitch.
- 2:05:07Ground ball, down the line. It's a fair ball.
- 2:05:10Heading toward the bullpen. Mazur's going to drive for two.
- 2:05:13He cuts the inside corner of the bag and he'll go into second standing up with a double.
- 2:05:21Maz has doubled down the line.
- 2:05:25Runner in score position, one out and it brings up the pitchers in delta.
- 2:05:31It's a ground ball between third base and the third baseman's saddle.
- 2:05:38That is the third extra base hit of the ball game.
- 2:05:42Oliver had the other two, a home run and a double.
- 2:05:45And now Maz has doubled off the left-hander, Jura.
- 2:05:50Hits are even at five for each club with the Bucs lead in the payoff department,
- 2:05:55four to one after winning the first game, three to two.
- 2:06:04And remember after this ball game,
- 2:06:07the other club will go on the road and tangle with the New York Smith,
- 2:06:11beginning a three-game series tomorrow night at Shea Stadium in New York.
- 2:06:18In the second, the pitch, curve low into the dirt.
- 2:06:22Ball one, no strikes.
- 2:06:28Aubrey continues to throw in the bullpen.
- 2:06:30The bullpen catcher is wearing a mask.
- 2:06:37No activity in the pirate bullpen.
- 2:06:40Jim Nelson waiting on a ball one, no strike pitch.
- 2:06:43The hook to second, here it comes.
- 2:06:45The ball outside, two and two.
- 2:06:51Frank Osiyak looking in to Nelson,
- 2:06:53and Nelson steps out of the batter's box for a moment to be sure that he has the time correct.
- 2:07:00Checked again, now steps in.
- 2:07:03John Leppard coaching it first.
- 2:07:06Shables are beginning to lengthen here at the stadium, reaching the home plate area now.
- 2:07:12The last ball is over from the left-hander, two balls and a strike.
- 2:07:18Bucks scored a run in the first, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
- 2:07:23For four, the Chicago Cubs scored a run on three consecutive hits to get the ball game underway.
- 2:07:30And then Nelson and the Pirates have been in command.
- 2:07:37A two-one pitch, swing and a foul. The ball will get back into the seats over here to the right.
- 2:07:49San Francisco winning their ball game on a home run by Gallagher,
- 2:07:53in second of the year in the 10th inning with one man on.
- 2:07:56Jim Mudcat ran, that's right, so he's not too with San Francisco.
- 2:08:05San Francisco wins six-four.
- 2:08:10There's a ground ball to the right side. It will get the runner on to third.
- 2:08:13Becker backs up, gets on the short hop and throws on to first.
- 2:08:18And Maserowski goes to third, play going four-three.
- 2:08:28Here is Allou in a final base camp on Matteo Allou,
- 2:08:33who is a face-off loaded, singled in the right field in the fifth inning to drive in a couple of runs.
- 2:08:43Since then, the Bucks have added another run.
- 2:08:48Allou with one-four-three in the ball game, now three out of 11 in the series.
- 2:08:56He has 88 hits, he leads the Bucks in that department, and now has 27 runs batted in.
- 2:09:02He's quite a bit on the handle to bat.
- 2:09:04Oh, there's a ball behind him now.
- 2:09:08That ball slipped from the left-hander's giraffe, and it went behind Matty,
- 2:09:14and a catcher, Martin, had it move quickly to the right to get to that ball.
- 2:09:20Ball one, no strike.
- 2:09:24The left-hander is fixed.
- 2:09:27Oh, into the dirt. Allou was ready to offer it, and I don't know whether he went around or not.
- 2:09:33He did.
- 2:09:34Oh, tipped the ball. He got down on it.
- 2:09:37Just like getting it off a golf tee that time, then tried to check up on it.
- 2:09:41Loop just sling back.
- 2:09:44Tipped the ball. It drew it one-and-one on Allou.
- 2:09:50Outfield toward left and not very deep.
- 2:09:52The one-one pitch.
- 2:09:54He's going to drag it. It's a fine squeeze of home.
- 2:09:57Oh, is in time.
- 2:10:00That's what the pitch dropped him out.
- 2:10:04And a throw to first, Nip-to-Loo, the play going one-three to retire to the side.
- 2:10:08And the in-eagle runs, one hit, no errors.
- 2:10:10One man left at the end of the seven, Pittsburgh 4, Chicago 1.
- 2:10:16Pittsburgh paint presents the Breathing House.
- 2:10:20Your house is breathing all the time.
- 2:10:29It expands when it's hot and humid, contracts when it's cool and dry,
- 2:10:34inhales and exhales, stretches and shrinks.
- 2:10:38That's why house paint cracks and bulges and peels.
- 2:10:42So we made a new paint that stretches and breathes.
- 2:10:45New Pittsburgh Sunproof Latex.
- 2:10:48It has four times the stretchability of other house paints.
- 2:10:52It breathes and expands and contracts with your house,
- 2:10:56so it resists cracking and blistering and peeling.
- 2:11:00Pittsburgh Sunproof Latex house paints last longer, years longer than any other house paint.
- 2:11:06Try it. Give your house a breather.
- 2:11:11Twenty thousand, nine hundred and eighteen at fourth field for the final game.
- 2:11:24And Bob, there's a guy sitting down here that's made history here.
- 2:11:28And this ballpark is synonymous with his name, isn't it?
- 2:11:31Yeah, he made it easy as pie.
- 2:11:33Glad to see him. I guess that's a B-trainer, doesn't it?
- 2:11:36Sure good to see him up and around and know that he's Hale and Hardy.
- 2:11:40Well, I think it's quite an honor to just feel and produce two players that didn't produce but saw two players
- 2:11:48and were unanimously selected as the all-time greatest players in their position.
- 2:11:52Trainer, who's here now, played third, and of course the late Onus Lager,
- 2:11:56who played short and is a judge by many as the greatest player of all time.
- 2:12:01Yeah, it's good to see. He's probably out at the ballpark again.
- 2:12:04He's recovering from an illness.
- 2:12:06Billy Williams, who's had two hits in three times at Bat Steps in.
- 2:12:11Fastball by Jimmy Nelson is just outside, ball one.
- 2:12:15Pirates leading four to one.
- 2:12:17We won the front game with a double header, three to two.
- 2:12:22Six more outs to go in this ballpark.
- 2:12:26Line drive, center field.
- 2:12:28Dan Lue will play it on about the second half, holding his first base.
- 2:12:32Another well-infall by Williams.
- 2:12:42Stepping in, Jim Hickman and Williams have been about it offensively for the Cubs in this series,
- 2:12:48and I guess they're almost a week too, although Williams had some sort of a slump prior to coming in here.
- 2:12:57And I was on on the fourth play, fly at the center, essentially walked back in the fifth
- 2:13:02when Nelson picked out of a tough jam.
- 2:13:05The bases loaded, got Santo to hit in with double play.
- 2:13:13Curve ball way outside, one ball and a strike.
- 2:13:16Activity now, the Pirates bullpen, left hander Luke Walker, who's got a save on the front game,
- 2:13:22getting the final two outs after the bases are loaded,
- 2:13:27and right hander Dave Juchte, who picked up the win in the front game.
- 2:13:40Nelson, with that shared third base, takes the sign.
- 2:13:44Here is the home ball in, taken by Hickman, one ball, one strike.
- 2:13:51Jim Hickman has to be an all-star player this year for the first time in his major league career,
- 2:13:57having a great year.
- 2:13:59Hitting at 3.30, leaving the club in RBI.
- 2:14:03Home ball, taken, foul tipped.
- 2:14:06Tried to get the bat out of there, couldn't make it.
- 2:14:09And the count now, ball and two strikes.
- 2:14:16Nelson started this one-inch dig for the Bucks when he shut out the Cardinals and ten-an-inch won the nothing.
- 2:14:25He's been fighting the strike cliche, but it has been a pretty good team effort all around.
- 2:14:29One-two pitch, curve ball is outside, count even, two balls, two strikes.
- 2:14:48Kevner deep at third, not five feet off the line.
- 2:14:55Two-two pitch, bounce the shortstop Valley over to Mazuratsky to throw the first double play.
- 2:15:14That's the third double play in this ball game.
- 2:15:18That's the second that Alley and Mazuratsky have turned over.
- 2:15:251966 was a big year for Oop and Maz with a double play.
- 2:15:31It's good to see both of them back healthy and playing once again.
- 2:15:35Santo, 0-3, bounce into a double play with a base is loaded the last time.
- 2:15:40Pirates leading 4-1.
- 2:15:42Waking ball taken by Santo, strike one.
- 2:15:49Not too many people leaving their seats.
- 2:15:5240,918.
- 2:15:54Boy, they've enjoyed a beautiful day for baseball and two good games.
- 2:15:59Curve ball backhanded by May in the dirt, count even to the ball and the strike.
- 2:16:07Pirate pitching, which has been a question mark in the spring and the early weeks of the season,
- 2:16:13really starting to solidify now.
- 2:16:17Found another arm in this guy, Jimmy Nelson.
- 2:16:21The 1-1 pitch, a little bit high with a fast ball.
- 2:16:25He's behind two balls and a strike.
- 2:16:34He gives Don Osborne a lot of credit for the confidence he has in youngsters
- 2:16:39and installs in youngsters or in spills.
- 2:16:43Home ball inside, three balls and a strike.
- 2:16:573-1 delivery, just a little bit low, and that blocks Santo.
- 2:17:02For Jimmy Nelson, that's walk number five.
- 2:17:10Nelson, I would have to confess, this is not his best ball game, but he only scored one run, Bob.
- 2:17:17That's right.
- 2:17:18He's been running through some raindrops.
- 2:17:20I remarked a little earlier, Nellie, while you were out getting a sandwich,
- 2:17:24that I felt his palm ball wasn't doing what he wanted it to do.
- 2:17:28He got amazed on the strikeout the first time he came in at the Biggies
- 2:17:32and then got McCubby to go to the double play.
- 2:17:34Then the next time out against the Dodgers, it stayed with him and stayed him out the next time.
- 2:17:38He won the ball game.
- 2:17:39It seemed to me that so far this early part of the game, anyhow, his palm ball wasn't where he wanted it.
- 2:17:45Then he seemed to get it back for a while.
- 2:17:47Now it seems to have deserted him again.
- 2:17:50He's the kind of a guy, though, we mentioned before, that just doesn't know where to give up.
- 2:17:55You've got to battle your way to the end.
- 2:17:59A very good competitor.
- 2:18:01That's something you have to have to be an outstanding pitcher just to make it to the big league.
- 2:18:09Robertson will play behind Shattow at first base.
- 2:18:12Four to one is the score.
- 2:18:13The fire is leading.
- 2:18:14Top of the eighth.
- 2:18:15Callison about her.
- 2:18:16Fouls one.
- 2:18:17Back on the screen.
- 2:18:19Oh, he had a good ball to hit that time.
- 2:18:20A little bit annoyed that he didn't poke it.
- 2:18:25Callison struck out, drew a walk, and bounced to Bill Mazurowski in three trips against Nelson.
- 2:18:36Cubs were able to get only six hits in the front game.
- 2:18:41Chopping ball to second.
- 2:18:42Mazurowski on two hops, the first, and that retires the coach.
- 2:18:48No run.
- 2:18:49One hit.
- 2:18:50No air.
- 2:18:51It's a sad one.
- 2:18:52We go to the bottom half of the eighth.
- 2:18:53The fire is leading.
- 2:18:54Four to one.
- 2:18:55Commercial, right?
- 2:18:56Right.
- 2:18:57And it's good news about the great Plymouth Duster.
- 2:19:00You know, Plymouth sales are soaring in this area, and this duster is one great reason.
- 2:19:05Once you've seen it, you'll know why.
- 2:19:06Small enough, yet big enough, just about says it.
- 2:19:09This is what it says.
- 2:19:10Duster seats five.
- 2:19:11Now, if you've been looking at small cars, you know that's room for one more person than
- 2:19:15most mini cars seat.
- 2:19:16And look at the trunk.
- 2:19:17There's room for just about anything and everything you'll ever want to take along.
- 2:19:20Power, you say?
- 2:19:21Well, power we got.
- 2:19:22More power than most mini cars.
- 2:19:23Power you can use on freeways.
- 2:19:24Power to make that vacation drive a breeze.
- 2:19:25And if a little lady talks style, show her duster.
- 2:19:26Inside, outside, all around the duster, you'll never find anything that looks like a mini
- 2:19:27car except the price.
- 2:19:28Duster.
- 2:19:29Priced like a mini car.
- 2:19:30Built like a lot more.
- 2:19:31There's a Plymouth dealer near you.
- 2:19:32And you're going to be able to get a lot more.
- 2:19:33And you're going to be able to get a lot more.
- 2:19:34And you're going to be able to get a lot more.
- 2:19:35And you're going to be able to get a lot more.
- 2:19:36And you're going to be able to get a lot more.
- 2:19:37And you're going to be able to get a lot more.
- 2:19:48And you're going to be able to get a lot more.
- 2:20:11And you're going to be able to get a lot more.
- 2:20:32And you're going to be able to get a lot more.
- 2:20:53And you're going to be able to get a lot more.
- 2:21:20And you're going to be able to get a lot more.
- 2:21:47Two up and two down.
- 2:21:51Ladies and gentlemen, we see a day-long ride down to his place.
- 2:21:561956, good with the toker and that thing's still working.
- 2:22:04I'm glad I am too.
- 2:22:06Stijl off the fifth, fly ball to left field.
- 2:22:09Just came back as Billy Williams and he runs it there.
- 2:22:13Now an easy inning for Larry Gura. Free fly ball out, no runs, no hits, no errors, and on left.
- 2:22:21We've completed eight innings of play and the pilots lead the second game four to one.
- 2:22:27Your next car, what will it be?
- 2:22:30Well, if you're on a budget you could settle for a nice little compact, nice and small, nice and cheap.
- 2:22:35But what if you're the luxury type and still on a budget?
- 2:22:38Then you're in trouble unless you see your Chrysler dealer.
- 2:22:41That's right, Chrysler, because right now a full-size Chrysler Newport is priced only a few dollars a month more
- 2:22:47than a Ford LTD or a Chevy Caprice comfortably equipped.
- 2:22:50And that's unloaded Chrysler Newport, a four-door sedan with a big 383 cubic inch V8 engine
- 2:22:56that uses regular gas, power steering, automatic transmission radio, fiberglass-belted white sidewall tires,
- 2:23:03torsion bar suspension, and more.
- 2:23:05Chrysler Newport, that's luxury, that's value.
- 2:23:09That's your next car waiting for you right now.
- 2:23:12And there's a Chrysler dealer near you.
- 2:23:16See Andy Gregg or Carl Sobeck at Gregg Motor Company in Clareton,
- 2:23:21or Phil Duttweiler at Phil Duttweiler Motors in Mason Town.
- 2:23:32Well, Dave Justy has come on now and Nelson has gone eight innings for one run.
- 2:23:37He can win, he cannot lose.
- 2:23:39Justy can pick up a save.
- 2:23:41He was the winner in the first game.
- 2:23:43No question as we talked, he had been struggling.
- 2:23:47But he gave up five walks, he threw a lot of pitches.
- 2:23:52And Danny Murtaugh, you must remember one other thing.
- 2:23:55This boy had a history earlier of a sore arm.
- 2:23:58Danny Murtaugh doesn't want to horse around with that.
- 2:24:01We have Al Oliver in right field and John Jeter has come.
- 2:24:10Jeter's gone to left field.
- 2:24:18Justy will go to Cleo James.
- 2:24:21So we're down to what the Pirates hope are the final three outs before 40,918.
- 2:24:38The Buccos won the first game, 3-2.
- 2:24:42Montreal beat New York 3-2 to take two out of three from the match.
- 2:24:47And now we're here in the ninth inning leading 4-1.
- 2:24:51They outfield around to the left.
- 2:24:54Now the pitch.
- 2:24:56Danny bounces it up the middle and over to the left is Ali.
- 2:24:59Up behind seconds, does he bounce?
- 2:25:05Beautiful ranging play by Gene Ali.
- 2:25:10One away.
- 2:25:12Now J.C. Martin over two.
- 2:25:16He flied to left, he walked and he popped his short.
- 2:25:25Hearts leading 4-1.
- 2:25:29They outfield playing J.C. Martin straight away.
- 2:25:36Now the pitch.
- 2:25:38Ball high.
- 2:25:43Here's the goal.
- 2:25:45The gentleman that started me broadcasting baseball, the late Rosie Rosewell, opened up for us for your broadcasting.
- 2:25:52And now it looks like we're going to close it down.
- 2:25:56One ball, one strike.
- 2:26:00And I'll be honest with you, it's getting to me.
- 2:26:05The 1-1 pitch, palm ball popped into left fielder and Jeter waiting.
- 2:26:11Two out.
- 2:26:15Willie Smith coming up.
- 2:26:24Sixty-one years, almost 5,000 baseball games.
- 2:26:29Lady Forbes is about to retire.
- 2:26:36The Cubs who opened it 61 years ago, close it here with our pirates.
- 2:26:44And just imagine, I doubt if maybe one man was living at the time on this field.
- 2:26:54Could have been Leo Durochi, about the only one.
- 2:26:59And he would have been updated.
- 2:27:02Strike his call, the left hand batting, Willie Smith.
- 2:27:11There is an umpire here that could say that.
- 2:27:14Foul back, strike two.
- 2:27:18I know Leo, he wouldn't leave you, but it's worth taking him in a push.
- 2:27:27When I say Leo, I mean late 60s.
- 2:27:31Here's the 0-2 pitcher, Smith, high for a ball, one and two.
- 2:27:37Les Weddingen, the director of the club over here, just is beaming along with
- 2:27:42the ladies, Joe Brown and Wyatt Cindy, their guest Thomas Johnson on the 36th wedding anniversary, one-two pitch.
- 2:27:49Low, two and two.
- 2:27:56Two balls, two strikes, two out, four-one Pittsburgh, top half of the night.
- 2:28:03And the 2-2 pitch to Smith.
- 2:28:09Base hit, right up the middle.
- 2:28:19Number seven brings up Don Kessinger, he's singled and scored, it's got a long run.
- 2:28:25He flied out to right field in the third, he looped the single to left in the fifth,
- 2:28:29he bounced out the second in the seventh.
- 2:28:38The outfield playing around to the left.
- 2:28:42To the left-hand batting, Kessinger.
- 2:28:45Justy, who won the first game bidding for a save in the second game,
- 2:28:49Nelson, the pitcher of record.
- 2:28:52Now the pitch, Kessinger takes a strike.
- 2:29:02By 25 years from now, 300,000 people would have been here at this game,
- 2:29:07it always is that way.
- 2:29:09Pitch high, ball one, strike one.
- 2:29:12Bidding with Al Barlich, the senior umpire of the National League,
- 2:29:16would call the balls and strikes in the first game with Eddie Vargo,
- 2:29:19born and reared in Butler, Pennsylvania, who spent many a pleasurable hour here
- 2:29:24as a spectator umpire of the last game.
- 2:29:27One ball, one strike.
- 2:29:30A high chopper over the man going over forward is Ness, he got it, it's all over.
- 2:29:37It's all over.
- 2:29:40Sixty-one years, and the Buccos receive a standing ovation.
- 2:29:47They close it out, and the tubs go down to the beach.
- 2:29:51No runs, one hit, no errors, and one left.
- 2:29:54Pittsburgh takes the doubleheader, three-two and four to one.
- 2:29:58Pardon me, sir, I notice you are painting your house.
- 2:30:00Yes, I'm painting my house.
- 2:30:02With Pittsburgh sunproofed, the new latex house paint that fights discoloration from air pollution.
- 2:30:07Well, that's what they claim.
- 2:30:08Air pollution quite a problem in this city, is it?
- 2:30:10You're kidding or what?
- 2:30:11I wonder if you'd mind slipping off that gas mask for just a moment,
- 2:30:14we're not picking up too clearly.
- 2:30:16Okay, well, just for a moment.
- 2:30:19That's better.
- 2:30:20Sunproof from Pittsburgh not only allows your house to stretch and shrink with extreme hot or cold weather,
- 2:30:25it has also been developed to fight mildew and the ravages of air pollution.
- 2:30:29Can you hurry it up, please?
- 2:30:31As air pollution from automobiles and industry increases in the seventies,
- 2:30:35isn't it a comfort to know that your house will continue to look great longer
- 2:30:39when it's painted with Pittsburgh's new sunproof?
- 2:30:42It's a kind of a comfort, yeah.
- 2:30:44Good luck to your lungs in the seventies, but at least your house will look great.
- 2:30:49In North Hills, your Pittsburgh paint dealer is John Rogers,
- 2:30:53North Hills Village Shopping Center, McKnight Road.
- 2:30:56In Mount Lebanon, there's a Pittsburgh paint center located at 316 Castle Shannon Boulevard.
- 2:31:03Before we summarize, the doubleheader that has moved the Pittsburgh Pirates
- 2:31:07into a virtual drive for first place in the Eastern Division of the National League
- 2:31:12with the New York Met and the Met coming up tomorrow night.
- 2:31:16Let's pause for station identification along the Pittsburgh Pirate radio network.
- 2:31:22Fielding everything, open mic with Mike Levine,
- 2:31:406-9, on Katie J.A. Pittsburgh.
- 2:31:52In the first game of a doubleheader, the Pittsburgh Pirates, who were going on to win two games,
- 2:31:58picked up a 3-2 victory, directing their winning streak to six in a row,
- 2:32:04a half game at that stage of the day closer to the league-leading New York Mets.
- 2:32:11In the first game, the Pirates had three runs, seven hits and no errors,
- 2:32:16and for the Chicago Cubs, two runs, six hits and one error.
- 2:32:21The winning pitcher in relief was Dave Justy, his record four and nothing.
- 2:32:29The losing pitcher for the Chicago Cubs was Billy Hans, and his record dropped to nine and seven.
- 2:32:38It was a great first game for the Bucks to win, as they extended their winning streak to six straight
- 2:32:46and the Cubs losing streak to nine in a row.
- 2:32:49And then in the second game of the doubleheader, the Chicago Cubs greeted the young right-hander,
- 2:32:56Nelson, with three consecutive hits.
- 2:32:59There was action in the Pirate bullpen, and the Cubs had a one-nothing lead.
- 2:33:03In the last of the first inning, Al Oliver hit his sixth-goal run of the season and tied the game at one.
- 2:33:09Then in the fifth inning, the Pirates went on top with a couple of runs,
- 2:33:14added another run in the sixth inning, four runs, five hits and no errors,
- 2:33:19for the victorious Pittsburgh Pirates and for the Chicago Cubbies, one run, seven hits and one error.
- 2:33:27The winner in the second game, Nelson, his record is now three and nothing,
- 2:33:32and Justy was credited with his 11th save of the season.
- 2:33:37The starter and loser for the Chicago Cubs was Pappas, with a record of two and two.
- 2:33:44The 40,918 jam forms field was the final game to be played in the history of this park.
- 2:33:54It all began in 1909, and in that year, the Pirates went on to win the pennant and to win the World Series.
- 2:34:05And now they close it out with a sweep of the three-game series from the Chicago Cubs
- 2:34:11within a virtual tie of first place in the Eastern Division.
- 2:34:15New York lost today, their record is 38-33.
- 2:34:19The Pirates, by winning two, now 40 victories, more than any other team in the Eastern Division.
- 2:34:26They have lost 35 times. The percentage for New York is 535.
- 2:34:32The percentage for the Pittsburgh Pirates is 533.
- 2:34:37Nelly, this has been a grand and glorious day.
- 2:34:41I know how Bob has felt beginning his broadcasting career here.
- 2:34:46Your pitching career was right out there on that mound, and before you do close it off,
- 2:34:52I'm sure there must be a goose bump or two along your arms and down your back,
- 2:34:58and maybe a sad note in your voice and a tear in your eye.
- 2:35:04Well, not really, not a tear in my eye, but you get a little nostalgic about these moments, I'm sure.
- 2:35:10I got more goose bumps during the ball game because this ball club has kind of attracted a lot of enthusiasm,
- 2:35:16or brought some enthusiasm back to Pittsburgh and the sports, and I'm happy to see that.
- 2:35:20But as far as my pitching career was brief in the big leagues, I won my first ball game here,
- 2:35:26and it's something I'll always treasure. You can't take it away from you.
- 2:35:29It's something you dream when you're a little kid, a chance to play in the big leagues.
- 2:35:33You always remember the first one you get along.
- 2:35:36It's right here again.
- 2:35:37See, then, Milwaukee Braves.
- 2:35:40O'Lanxion was being played, and players are now bringing their baseball caps out,
- 2:35:46and they're getting a huge response here, Gene.
- 2:35:48It's a real heartwarming thing. The fans are enjoying it, and I think the players are, too.
- 2:35:53And it's seven in a row now for the Bucks.
- 2:35:56That's right. Momentum is a wonderful thing.
- 2:36:00I think Roberto's ovation would be something that the folks along our higher-up network would like to pick up,
- 2:36:09as each player has autographed his baseball cap.
- 2:36:16That is Roberto Clemente. That was for Clemente.
- 2:36:22Bill Maserati will look at a few pretty good cheers, too.
- 2:36:27That's high.
- 2:36:29Well, Mellie, along with everything that goes with the winning of the doubleheader and the closing of Forbes Field and all,
- 2:36:35you can't say, well, that's the season, because the players leave tomorrow morning.
- 2:36:40We go into New York, and they begin a road trip against the New York Mets
- 2:36:45Monday night, Tuesday night, Wednesday afternoon. Thursday afternoon will be, and Thursday night will be a day off.
- 2:36:52Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Chicago. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday along in Philadelphia.
- 2:36:59And then Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in St. Louis, all before the All-Star Break.
- 2:37:04So they have a lot of work cut out for them yet.
- 2:37:07The next six days are going to be real big ones for this ball club. It's in Shea Stadium.
- 2:37:13And, of course, then the weekend series with the Cubs. They don't want to come back.
- 2:37:18The Cubs is a good ball club, Chicago. They're not beaten. They're going to bounce back. It's too early.
- 2:37:22Their pitching's a little bit hurting right now, and they're not hitting.
- 2:37:25But every ball club goes through that. We've got momentum and they don't.
- 2:37:29But it's going to be a very interesting road trip, and we'll be most happy to bring it to you.
- 2:37:34Well, I guess we'll wind it up from Forbes Field. It's been my pleasure to sit along with Bob Prince for four years,
- 2:37:40and this year to sit along with Gene Osborne.
- 2:37:43That winds up our power of broadcast for today and forever from Forbes Field.
- 2:37:47We'll be back on the air tomorrow at 8 o'clock from Shea Stadium. We take on the New York Mets.
- 2:37:52Now speaking for Bob Prince, the gunner, for Gene Osborne, good old trusty engineer, George Cleave,
- 2:37:59and our loyal statistician, Radio Rich, Nellie King, saying so long for us.
- 2:38:04Your colorful Pittsburgh Thanksgiving, where you can select from a rainbow of colors.
- 2:38:09Pittsburgh Thanksgiving, a product of PPG Industries.
- 2:38:13For Iron City Beer, next time your beer thirst comes up, wet it down with the number one beer out here,
- 2:38:19Iron City Beer. Once you get there, you'll never want to lose it.
- 2:38:24And for Atlantic Richfield Company and your local Atlantic dealer, drive in where you see the Red Ball Center.
- 2:38:31Red Ball Service is your Atlantic dealer's way of assuring you good service every time you come in.
- 2:38:38This broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the Pittsburgh Baseball Club,
- 2:38:43solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 2:38:46If you have any publications, rebroadcasts, or other use of the description and accounts of this game
- 2:38:52without the express written consent of the Pittsburgh Baseball Club is prohibited.
- 2:38:57Once again, the final score is ever from Forbes Field.
- 2:39:02The Pirates beat the Double Headers. The Pirates won the front ball games 3-2.
- 2:39:07They came back to win the night cap 4-1.
- 2:39:10All line time was signed and we'll say it too.
- 2:39:14This is the Pirates, big ball night.
