- 0:00Good morning. It is Memorial Day here on the
- 0:04WJN Morning News. That means you do not double
- 0:07check back in Yon. He is double checked out for the
- 0:10holiday. He'll be back tomorrow but in
- 0:13studio. I'm Aaron Chadbourne.
- 0:14Thanks for being with us on this holiday.
- 0:17Joined by the It's the Inside Me crew.
- 0:20It is Jeremy Mixer and Tony Randazzo.
- 0:22Gentlemen, happy Memorial Day. Good morning.
- 0:26Happy Memorial Day, good to be here this morning.
- 0:28Wet weekend you say? Most of the parades are
- 0:29cancelled. Several are Portland.
- 0:32I did look up and they did say rain or shine for Portland's
- 0:35Parade but that's not till 2 so we might be OK for that one.
- 0:38Yeah, 'cause it's the the rain supposed to like clear out by it
- 0:40was a lot of rain this weekend. It was a lot.
- 0:43It was pouring on the way down from Auburn this morning in
- 0:46certain parts of the highway. Dinner in Brunswick last night
- 0:49and on the drive back there was hydroplaning.
- 0:51It was dangerous on the Interstate.
- 0:54It was, it was not great. I had planned to be at Sebago
- 0:57Lake for most of the weekend, obviously being back for this
- 0:59morning to fill in for Matt. But I, I went up Saturday, we
- 1:04had a cookout and then I went home.
- 1:07I, I, I didn't need to stay at the lake to have cold and rain.
- 1:10I can be a cold and rainy at home.
- 1:12Yeah, I know. I was home all day yesterday.
- 1:15And do you really do much with myself?
- 1:18It's good to have an excuse to have just a.
- 1:19Weekend. It was good to have that idea.
- 1:21I was it was good to have an excuse to just kind of do
- 1:23nothing. It it's hard though, like on a
- 1:25three day weekend where you have like a plan and then it doesn't
- 1:27come together and then, you know, I guess there are movies
- 1:29out, the new Star Wars movies out.
- 1:31I think people could like rear to that.
- 1:32I bet it was a big box office weekend for yeah.
- 1:34Probably. DeLorean and Grogu.
- 1:37That could have been something I could have done yesterday.
- 1:39Now you tell. Now you tell me.
- 1:40Hey, it's going to rain all day today.
- 1:42That's true. I could go to that.
- 1:43You got time once the the more news comes over.
- 1:46And so, yeah, here it is. We're back.
- 1:48We're we're on a lot happening over the weekend.
- 1:51We'll get to the top stories. Of course, the most in focus
- 1:55news item is the status of the war in Iran.
- 1:58Donald Trump announcing over the weekend.
- 2:01I don't know. I've kind of grown tired of the
- 2:03way that Trump has managed the updates on this war.
- 2:06He's like, hey, we're going to bomb you.
- 2:08Never mind, we're not going to bomb you.
- 2:10Oh, we have a ceasefire. Do you remember when they first
- 2:12announced the ceasefire? The ceasefire said in exchange
- 2:15for. Us.
- 2:16It was too long ago for me to remember.
- 2:18I think that's what he counts on to, He said in exchange for us
- 2:22having a ceasefire, they're going to reopen the Strait of
- 2:25Hormuz completely. And then Trump imposed A
- 2:29blockade. And so then they closed the
- 2:31Strait of Hormuz. So the Strait of Hormuz, which
- 2:33was the condition for the ceasefire, has been closed this
- 2:37whole time. And so I don't understand why we
- 2:38still have a ceasefire. I do think that the other
- 2:41countries in the Middle East have asked the United States not
- 2:44to re engage with bombing because they believe, and
- 2:48rightfully so, based on what we've seen happened, that Iran
- 2:50is going to attack them. And so they've said to the
- 2:52United States, hey, maybe don't keep bombing Iran.
- 2:57But I just don't, I don't get the strategy here.
- 2:59Like the strategy doesn't make any sense to me.
- 3:00It sounds like there's a new deal on the table that would
- 3:03reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for us saying that we
- 3:10have a deal and that the war is like winding down and not
- 3:13achieving the goals. Which I think is going to be a
- 3:15major embarrassment for President Trump if what we do is
- 3:18we come out of this conflict with everything returned to the
- 3:23way that it was in terms of Iran being led by people that do not
- 3:28have their people's best interest in mind by having a
- 3:30rogue state actor with nuclear materials.
- 3:34Yeah, Yeah. We need to get the Strait of
- 3:35Hormuz back reopened. But it was open before the war.
- 3:38And I do think it was short sighted at the US not to have a
- 3:41strategy for what to do. You know, they came up with the
- 3:44blockade strategy later, but just like I don't know, I'm sick
- 3:47of these announcements of oh, tomorrow, if nothing happens,
- 3:50we're going to bomb you to, you know, the more than you've ever
- 3:53seen before in your life. And then oh, no, no, I'm just
- 3:55kidding. It was we we got a deal and the
- 3:57deal is to nothing. I just, I don't know.
- 4:01I, I, the more I listen to the way that this is being portrayed
- 4:05by, by the US, right, by Marco Rubio, by Pete Hegseth, by
- 4:09Donald Trump, it just doesn't seem like there's, there's much
- 4:12new news there. So we'll continue to follow that
- 4:15today. Donald Trump is going to make an
- 4:17appearance later today when he lays the wreath at the Tomb of
- 4:20the Unknown Soldier. It is, of course, Memorial Day,
- 4:24and it's important to take a moment to remember what's
- 4:28different about Memorial Day versus veteran's day.
- 4:31I think a lot of people confuse the two on veteran's day, you
- 4:35know, people sometimes, no, no, veteran's day is about the
- 4:37living. It's about the people that are
- 4:39alive who have served. And yeah, people have given past
- 4:42sacrifice. But Memorial Day really
- 4:44commemorates those who lost their lives in the line of duty
- 4:48serving the United States in uniform.
- 4:51And this is a day that we appreciate that sacrifice.
- 4:53We realize what our country was built on.
- 4:55And I think that's really important.
- 4:57And yeah, we can have the cookouts and the boating and all
- 4:59of the other things that go with having the time off.
- 5:02But it's most important to realize that there is an
- 5:04ultimate sacrifice that's paid. It's being paid right now by
- 5:08people in the Middle East. We do want to recognize that
- 5:13when people die in line of duty, it's not just them who are
- 5:16affected. It's their entire family.
- 5:19It's their entire community. It's a big sacrifice borne by
- 5:25more than just the service member that gave their life.
- 5:27So if you have any remembrances that you want to share today,
- 5:30feel free to call in 879-9426. You can also text to the same
- 5:36number, 207-879-9426. We'll be checking and reading
- 5:42your text messages. We'll be taking your phone
- 5:43calls. And then we're going to be
- 5:47focusing, I guess, on politics. So that's what we generally talk
- 5:50about. And so I've I've not, we've had
- 5:53so many guests recently. Matt had all the Democrat
- 5:56candidates. I had them on inside Maine.
- 5:58We've had the Republicans today. We'll just do some analysis.
- 6:02And so each segment will try to pick a different race.
- 6:04We'll take the Republicans running for governor.
- 6:07We'll do the Democrats running for governor.
- 6:09We'll talk about Graham Plattner.
- 6:10We'll talk about every different race and every different aspect.
- 6:14And we'll take your calls throughout the show, which I
- 6:18think you know, it's a good day to make get a phone call and you
- 6:21won't get entered in for caller of the week.
- 6:23So this is a good day to get your practice in 879-9426.
- 6:29Only two more weeks till the primary.
- 6:30I'm very excited for this to be over.
- 6:32I don't know about you, Jeremy. Are you, are you tired yet of
- 6:34the primary? I'm as much as it's job
- 6:38security, I am tired of the. Ads, I know.
- 6:41That's that's what drive but but it is, it is job security for
- 6:44all of us that work in radio and television, at least on the
- 6:48local level. So, you know, it's, yeah, I
- 6:52mean, I, I kind of look forward to Election Day too with our
- 6:55Election Day coverage and and of course you'll be in on Election
- 6:59Day evening and it's. Going to be interesting because
- 7:01we're going to have results that start to come in, but you know
- 7:03the result, Jeremy, is going to be that there are front runners
- 7:07and it's going to run off. I don't think anyone's clearing
- 7:0950% in the gubernatorial primaries, right?
- 7:13And that's the one that people are watching because, you know,
- 7:16there there was the reporting that Tony did over the break
- 7:18that mentioned that Janet Mills name will still appear on the
- 7:20ballot. She's still technically a
- 7:21candidate. So her votes will get counted,
- 7:24right? But so, no, we're not watching
- 7:27that in the LePage race up in CD 2, I think there is some
- 7:31interest to see who the Democrat nominee is going to be.
- 7:33There you have Joe Baldacci, who's currently in the state
- 7:36Senate, brother of former Governor John Baldacci in what
- 7:40many of us are deeming the nepotism primary on the Democrat
- 7:43side, where you got the brother of the former governor, former
- 7:46congressman, the son of the current Congress.
- 7:48I mean, the son of the current senator, the daughter of the
- 7:50current congresswoman. Like, I mean, for a country and
- 7:54a party that says we've moved on from dynasties and that we don't
- 7:57inherit your power, that it's elected, like all these families
- 8:00in politics, it's it's quite something.
- 8:03But so like Paul Doche, I think he's been endorsed by the
- 8:06Democrat Campaign Committee. He's running against Matt Dunlap
- 8:10and that other kid that tried to run for something but couldn't,
- 8:13couldn't cut it against Susan Collins and then swapped over to
- 8:16run into the 2 Jordan Woods. I think that one, I don't know
- 8:19if Joe Baldaggi hits 50%, but I think he'll come pretty close
- 8:23and he'll probably have a commanding lead that can't be
- 8:25made-up very easily through ranked choice voting.
- 8:28So I think that one can probably be called, but for the
- 8:30gubernatorial races, what we're going to have at the end of the
- 8:32night. And so we're going to get a lot
- 8:33of people commenting. We'll talk to the campaigns and
- 8:35see how they're reacting as the results come in, but for most of
- 8:38them, we're just going to know who's in the lead and how big
- 8:42the lead is. And we'll be able to handicap
- 8:44whether it becomes likely that ranked choice voting could
- 8:46change the outcome. Now, what I think is most
- 8:49important to watch for is if a ranked choice, remember when,
- 8:52when Jared Golden trailed Bruce Poliquin and came back to
- 8:56overtake him to become congressman for the Second
- 8:59District congressional seat, that was only by a couple
- 9:02points. And it's not hard to make up a
- 9:04couple points in ranked choice voting, but it's really hard to
- 9:08make up 10 or more percentage points when you're trailing by
- 9:12that. Because in order to redistribute
- 9:14right, about half of Republicans in particular are going to rank
- 9:17and half of them aren't. So now you're already cutting it
- 9:19down. So let's say that you what you
- 9:21started with 100%. Well, if if you eliminate the
- 9:25lowest vote getter who gets 4% of the vote, only half of those
- 9:29are going to get redistributed and same thing for 8 or 10 or 14
- 9:34or 20. And so not all of them are going
- 9:36to have ranked. And then the ones that do rank,
- 9:38they're actually going to be pretty spread out.
- 9:40So I think it becomes very, very difficult for anyone to overtake
- 9:43the front runner and win 879-9426 the number.
- 9:47If you want to join us on the WJN Morning News, let's take a
- 9:50call before we head into break and talk to Greg and Sabattus.
- 9:53What's up, Greg? Oh, good morning.
- 9:55Good morning, Aaron. About politics.
- 9:58This is about politics. Let's talk about Elliott Cutler
- 10:03and the man who paid for things to be done to children for his
- 10:09amusement violates his bail. I don't know how many times he's
- 10:15caught coming out of a hotel where those actions are going
- 10:20on. And on Friday of a holiday
- 10:23weekend, the judge charges him an enormous $10,000.
- 10:28I mean, I don't know how he comes up with that money, but
- 10:31somehow he comes up with $10,000 to stay out of jail.
- 10:36The man was financing children being abused.
- 10:41Where is the justice? Yeah, I know.
- 10:45Thanks for the call, Greg. Appreciate it.
- 10:46I think, you know, you point out and rightfully so that the
- 10:49Elliott Cutler case with him and for those who haven't followed,
- 10:52he was once the, I mean he wasn't the Democrat nominee, but
- 10:57he kind of was in that Libby Mitchell race against LePage.
- 10:59He came very close to being governor of the state of Maine
- 11:01in that first election versus LePage.
- 11:03Second time, not so much with Mike me showing.
- 11:06The yeah, that first one was a four way race.
- 11:08It was Elliott Cutler, Libby Mitchell, Governor LePage and
- 11:13Sean Moody. And.
- 11:14Both Sean, both Sean and Elliot were running as independence in
- 11:18that one, yeah. And it got nasty between them,
- 11:20too. Oh, it did.
- 11:21Real Elliot. Sean, Sean was talking about
- 11:23that on Inside Main on Saturday, actually, yeah.
- 11:26It was quite the election, but so I like color came very close
- 11:29to winning and being governor of the state.
- 11:30I mean, and now come to find out he's been caught as a purveyor
- 11:35of child pornography and in the the incident in the hotel, the
- 11:38most recent one, I don't think anything was going on in the
- 11:40hotel, but he was there and he had with him a DVD player.
- 11:44I don't even know where you get. It, well, a bag of DVD.
- 11:47'S with him, yeah. And I think he had a DVD player,
- 11:48he had a portable DVD player that he was using at the hotel
- 11:51to with a bag of. I mean, this is clearly a guy
- 11:54who. Is and he tried to hide it
- 11:55behind his back, which is what what cracks me up and the.
- 11:58Just happened to be there for something else and like.
- 12:00He's hello, Mr. Cutler. And then he just kind of puts
- 12:03the bag behind his back like he didn't.
- 12:05That makes it more obvious. I agree though, I think Greg has
- 12:08a great point that at some point your chances run out.
- 12:11Yes, we have to follow the law. Yes, we have to follow due
- 12:13process. But what does it say when it's
- 12:16so easy for someone who is convicted of such heinous
- 12:19behavior and heinous crime? And maybe he wasn't convicted,
- 12:21maybe he pled guilty to it. But for them to have such a
- 12:25light sentence for him and for him to keep getting out and keep
- 12:27having problems, I think at some point we need to keep the public
- 12:31and our children safe. 879-9426 is the number here on the WJN
- 12:35Morning News.
