- 0:12The Word of God is God's Word to us, and we must
- 0:20treat it as such. And what we're going to read
- 0:24in these three chapters is particularly... man's
- 0:29heart bent away, really not desiring God's word,
- 0:35and that the only way we can really hear God's
- 0:39word, truly hear it, know it, understand it,
- 0:44is by the Holy Spirit of God. And we'll prove
- 0:47this out in a minute, okay? So Father, I just
- 0:50ask that you would be with us as we open up your
- 0:52word, that you would guide us, that you would
- 0:54give us your wisdom. that you would speak to
- 0:57us through your word as we go through these three
- 0:59chapters, that we would clearly understand how
- 1:04you work through your word and how you draw men's
- 1:09hearts and how you sanctify us through your word
- 1:11and how you are the God of all creation who loves
- 1:16us and cares deeply for us, Lord. We don't worship
- 1:19your word, but we worship you, the God of the
- 1:22word. and we praise you and thank you that you
- 1:25are the faithful King of kings and Lord of lords.
- 1:28In Jesus' name, amen. So that's going to be something
- 1:32I think we're going to need to continue to be
- 1:34reminded of as we're going through this because
- 1:37we have a tendency when you emphasize the word
- 1:40all the time, people start to worship the word
- 1:45and the written word and not the God of the written
- 1:49word. or the word incarnate, Jesus Christ. And
- 1:53so remember, this is God giving us what we need
- 1:59for life and godliness, and that our very existence
- 2:02is completely dependent on God's word itself.
- 2:08Man does not live by bread alone, but by every
- 2:10word that comes from the mouth of God. So Exodus
- 2:1420, Exodus 20. What's interesting here is a lot
- 2:18of times we read, these these chapters and we
- 2:22have a tendency to think that it's the same event
- 2:27just told in like a different way and it's not
- 2:32it's three very distinct events and this is very
- 2:38important because i want you to understand what
- 2:40god is doing here so in chapter 20 we get to
- 2:44this point where the people of god have been
- 2:47brought to mount sinai And God is now about to
- 2:52lay down this clear standard of who he is in
- 2:57his character. It's not like they haven't seen
- 3:00it coming out of Egypt, but this is a clear declaration
- 3:03of God. Now, what God does here in chapter 20
- 3:05is he actually speaks his commandments. How many
- 3:11of you guys have watched Charlton Heston, Moses,
- 3:15and... Everybody thinks that just Moses goes
- 3:20up into this mountain and there's fire and then
- 3:24Moses watches God. And it's like, whoa. And he
- 3:31comes down and there's a golden cap and he throws
- 3:33it down and he crashes it. And then Moses has
- 3:35to carry up two stones and then God like, no.
- 3:40God tells his people three times. Three times.
- 3:45He gives the commands three times. And he warns
- 3:49them, and they still don't listen. So I want
- 3:52you to notice here, chapter 20. And God spoke
- 3:56all these words, saying, I am the Lord your God,
- 4:03who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out
- 4:06of the house of slavery. You shall have no other
- 4:08gods before me. You shall not make for yourselves
- 4:11a carved image or any likeness of anything that
- 4:15is in heaven above. or that is in the earth beneath,
- 4:18or that is in the water under the earth. You
- 4:22shall not bow down to them or serve them, for
- 4:25I am the Lord your God. I am Yahweh Elohim, am
- 4:29a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers
- 4:33on the children to the third and fourth generation
- 4:35of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love
- 4:39to thousands of those who love me and keep my
- 4:43commandments. You shall not. Take the name of
- 4:47Yahweh Elohim in vain. For Yahweh will not hold
- 4:53him guiltless who takes his name in vain. Remember
- 4:58the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days you
- 5:01shall labor and do all your work. But on the
- 5:04seventh day it is a Sabbath to Yahweh Elohim.
- 5:07On it you shall not do any work. You and your
- 5:11sons or your daughter, your male servant or your
- 5:15female servant. or your livestock, or the sojourner
- 5:19who is within your gates. For in six days Yahweh
- 5:23made heaven and earth and the sea and all that
- 5:26is in them and rested on the seventh day. Therefore
- 5:29Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
- 5:34Honor your father and your mother that your days
- 5:37may be long in the land that Yahweh Elohim is
- 5:41giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not
- 5:44commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall
- 5:47not bear false witness against your neighbor.
- 5:49You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You
- 5:52shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male
- 5:55servant or his female servant or his ox or his
- 5:58donkey or anything that is your neighbor's. When
- 6:02all the people saw the thunder and the flashes
- 6:05of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and
- 6:08the mountain smoking, the people were afraid
- 6:12and trembled and they stood far off. and said
- 6:17to Moses, you speak to us and we will listen,
- 6:21but do not let God speak to us. Wow. Lest we
- 6:32die. Moses said to the people, do not fear, for
- 6:37God has come to you, come to test you, that the
- 6:41fear of him may be before you, that you may not
- 6:44sin. The people stood far off while Moses drew
- 6:48near to the thick darkness where God was. And
- 6:55Yahweh said to Moses, Thus you shall say to the
- 6:58people of Israel, You have seen for yourselves
- 7:01that I have talked with you from heaven. You
- 7:08shall not make gods of silver to be with me,
- 7:12nor shall you Make for yourselves gods of gold,
- 7:18an altar of earth. You shall make for me and
- 7:26sacrifice on it your offerings and your peace
- 7:28offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every
- 7:32place where I cause my name to be remembered,
- 7:35I will come to you and bless you. For if you
- 7:48wield your tool on it, you profane it. And you
- 7:53shall not go up to the steps to my altar that
- 7:57your nakedness may not be exposed. So what do
- 8:03we notice about this chapter? God hasn't written
- 8:06anything yet. He spoke to the people of Israel.
- 8:11Do you see the response? Of the people of Israel.
- 8:18Do not let God speak to us because if he speaks
- 8:24to us, we're going to die. Think about the mindset
- 8:28you have to have to think that God always wants
- 8:32to kill you. He leads you out of slavery where
- 8:36you were dying to bring you into freedom where
- 8:39you can live, and they say you led us out here
- 8:42to kill us, to starve us to death. Then he brings
- 8:47them to the mountain. He speaks to them the truth
- 8:50of his word, himself, his perfect standard of
- 8:56law that is given to them. And they go, don't
- 8:59talk to us because you're going to kill us if
- 9:01you talk to us. I want you to grasp that. Principle
- 9:12number one. God speaks his law and commands.
- 9:15Israel to obey. Not only does he tell Israel
- 9:18twice not to make any graven image, which he
- 9:25gives in the command, which he spoke first. Then
- 9:28he tells him again, which he says, don't make
- 9:30anything of silver to be with me. In other words,
- 9:35don't go and make yourself a God who will be
- 9:40me before you. And so, here we are, Exodus 20,
- 9:481 -6. And God spoke all these words, saying,
- 9:53I am the Lord your God who brought you out of
- 9:55the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
- 9:58He reminds them of the God he is. He tells them,
- 10:03I did this for you. I brought you out. I led
- 10:08you. I am your shepherd, is basically what he's
- 10:10saying. And you shall have no other gods before
- 10:13me. You shall not make for yourself a graven
- 10:16image or any likeness of anything that is in
- 10:19heaven above or that is on the earth beneath.
- 10:21Or that is in the water and under the earth.
- 10:24And you shall not bow down to them nor serve
- 10:27them. For I am the Lord your God and a jealous
- 10:31God. Visiting the iniquity of the fathers on
- 10:36the children to the third and fourth generation
- 10:38of those who hate me. I want you to get that.
- 10:42People don't love God. They hate God. Why? Disobedience
- 10:49and rebellion is a clear act of hatred towards
- 10:52them. That's what he means here. They don't want
- 10:55to obey me because they hate me. And they can
- 10:58obey me. And you're going to see that in a minute.
- 11:03But showing steadfast love to thousands of those
- 11:08who love me. He doesn't say to all the earth
- 11:15who will love me one day. It's only to those
- 11:20thousands who love me and keep my commandments.
- 11:25So this is not an issue of legalism here, which
- 11:29during the men's conference I was talking to
- 11:33Pastor Ben there, and there's always this fine
- 11:38line. Between legalism and grace. But with God,
- 11:43there isn't. God is all grace and all truth.
- 11:47He's both. He's law and grace. You don't separate
- 11:54the two. But because we have grown up in a seeker
- 11:59-sensitive environment and a modern -day idea
- 12:06of church, We've taken the very thing that God
- 12:10says that he is, truth and grace, and we've separated
- 12:14saying it's legalism and grace. But Jesus says,
- 12:22if you love me, obey me. He says again here in
- 12:25Exodus 26, by showing steadfast love to those
- 12:29who love me and keep my commands. Obedience is
- 12:35the standard. Why do I obey? Because I love him
- 12:39by faith. I love him. I want to obey him by faith
- 12:42because he's my God. That's my drive. That's
- 12:47what I want to do. Principle number two. God
- 12:55warns Israel and says, do not make gods of silver
- 12:59or gold to be with me. Don't do it. Like I said,
- 13:04he told him twice. Verse 18 and 24. Now when
- 13:09all the people saw the thunder and the flashes
- 13:11of lightning and saw the trumpet and the mountain
- 13:14smoking and the people were afraid and trembled
- 13:16and they stood far off and said to Moses. Isn't
- 13:20that interesting? God not only speaks to them,
- 13:23they hear the trumpet, they hear the voice of
- 13:26God, the commands of God as thunder. And they're
- 13:32so preoccupied with what they're seeing that
- 13:35they are not hearing. Words of life here. Two
- 13:45words of life. And they're afraid. And this is
- 13:52what they say to Moses. You speak to us and we
- 13:56will listen. No, you won't. If you're not going
- 13:59to listen to the living God, the creator of all
- 14:01the universe, there's no way you're going to
- 14:03listen to a man who bleeds like you and breathes
- 14:06like you and will eventually die like you. Give
- 14:09me a break. And Moses knows this. Because as
- 14:16you read the rest of the chapters and how Moses
- 14:19deals with the people, Moses is their ambassador.
- 14:26And Moses is their... Shepherd. And Moses is
- 14:30their priest. Because as we read later, Moses
- 14:37says, I will go before the Lord and ask to make
- 14:45atonement for you. That's Jesus. Look what he
- 14:53says. Look what else they say. But do not let
- 14:57God speak to us lest we die. But yet, the Torah
- 15:04and the Talmud, they live and die by that. They
- 15:12really don't listen to the word though. This
- 15:16is the issue here with the people of Israel.
- 15:20They willingly not listen. They're afraid. And
- 15:27in verse 20, Moses says to the people, such a
- 15:32good shepherd. Do not be afraid. For God has
- 15:38come to test you. That the fear of him may be
- 15:43before you that you may not sin. What's the fear?
- 15:48The command. You see the result of God speaking
- 15:52to you. This should bring to you a reverence
- 15:56of awe and respect to the point that you're going
- 16:00to do everything that you possibly can by his
- 16:03power in faith, not to disobey and make a graven
- 16:08image. He's preparing them. He's letting them
- 16:12know, you're going to do this. But I'm giving
- 16:15you an opportunity. But look at what it says
- 16:20in verse 21. This is interesting. For the people
- 16:22stood far off. Their hearts were what? Far from
- 16:29me. Their hearts were far from me. Why Moses
- 16:36drew near to the thick darkness where God was.
- 16:41Moses draws near because Moses knows by faith
- 16:45who God is and by faith believes his word. But
- 16:50the rest of Israel? Stood far off. They were
- 16:54terrified. So, thus you shall say to the people
- 17:00of Israel, this is what the Lord says, you have
- 17:03seen for yourselves that I have talked with you
- 17:06from heaven. And you shall not make gods of silver
- 17:11to be with me, nor shall you make for yourself
- 17:13gods of gold, an altar on the earth shall make
- 17:17For me, a sacrifice on it for burnt offerings
- 17:20and for peace offerings and for sheep and for
- 17:22oxen. This is your opportunity to come and worship
- 17:26me. But they don't. They don't. Exodus 31. Exodus
- 17:3931. I'm just going to do verse 18. Because what
- 17:48we read from Exodus 21 all the way to 31, which
- 17:55if you've been coming to Wednesday nights, you
- 17:57know, is God then has Moses, as he's talking
- 18:03with him on the mountain, write out all the rules.
- 18:08All the rules. How do you deal with slaves and
- 18:13how do you deal with men who are... behaving
- 18:17themselves and all these other rules. And it
- 18:20goes on. And then he tells them what the tabernacle
- 18:24is going to look like and how it's made and what
- 18:26it's going to be made of and how big it is. And
- 18:28he gives all the measurements and what the priest
- 18:30is supposed to be wearing. But he gets to 31.
- 18:36Verse 18. Principle number three. God gives Israel
- 18:40his command written by his own finger. Just to
- 18:44prove. Just to prove, again, I don't know if
- 18:49God has to prove anything. Really, he doesn't
- 18:51need to prove anything. But I'm just making a
- 18:53point. To reveal to the heart of the man, not
- 18:57only have I told you the commandments, but now
- 18:59I'm going to write it with my own finger. I'm
- 19:03going to hand it to you from my own hand. And
- 19:08he gave Moses, when he had finished speaking
- 19:11with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets. Of
- 19:15the testimony, tablets of stone written with
- 19:19his own finger. And Moses comes down. Chapter
- 19:3332. Look what it says. When the people saw that
- 19:40Moses had delayed to come down from the mountain,
- 19:44The people gathered themselves together to Aaron
- 19:47and said to him, you make us gods who shall go
- 19:52before us. As for this Moses, oh, as for this
- 20:00Moses, as for the Moses that you said, you speak
- 20:04to us and we'll listen to you, that only took
- 20:08five chapters. They abandoned that idea. As for
- 20:17this Moses, not my Moses, whose Moses is it?
- 20:27The man who brought us up out of the land of
- 20:31Egypt. We do not know what has become of him.
- 20:34The man who brought you out of Egypt, right?
- 20:36Oh, wait a minute. If I remember in the commandment
- 20:39that God spoke to you and he had... he was about
- 20:43to hand you, it says that I, the Lord God, led
- 20:47you out of the land of Egypt. Since when did
- 20:49Moses lead you out of Egypt? You remember who
- 20:54led him? In a pillar of fire, in a pillar of
- 20:59cloud? Oh, it's Moses though. So Aaron said to
- 21:05them, man, this dude, when I read, I can't help
- 21:09to get upset when I read these. I just, listen
- 21:13to what, this is Aaron, Moses' brother, who is
- 21:18going to be priest. Okay? This is mind -boggling.
- 21:25And then we're going to read to you Aaron's response.
- 21:29It's shocking. So Aaron said to them, take off
- 21:34your rings of gold that are in your ears. of
- 21:41your wives and your sons and your daughters and
- 21:43bring them to me. Really? So all the people took
- 21:51the rings of gold, rings of gold that were in
- 21:55their ears and brought them to Aaron. And he
- 21:59received the gold and from their hand he fashioned
- 22:02it with a graving tool and made a golden calf
- 22:05and said, These are your gods, O Israel. who
- 22:10brought you up out of the land of Egypt. When
- 22:13Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it.
- 22:20I mean, did God not say, don't do this? And when
- 22:26you build the altar, don't build it with you
- 22:28in stone. This is pure, unadulterated hatred.
- 22:35A rebellion of a people. Crazy. Let's keep reading.
- 22:50And this is what he says, and Aaron saw this,
- 22:55and he built an altar before it, and Aaron made
- 22:57a proclamation and said, let's celebrate. That's
- 23:05basically what he says. Tomorrow shall be a feast.
- 23:15To Yahweh. And they rose up. Early the next day.
- 23:20And offered burnt offerings. And brought peace
- 23:22offerings. And the people sat down and ate and
- 23:25drank. And rose up to play. They called the calf.
- 23:33Yahweh. And so the Lord said to Moses. Go down
- 23:41for your people. Whom brought whom you. Brought
- 23:45up out of the land of Egypt. That's kind of cool.
- 23:50They're saying that you brought them. So, hey,
- 23:52why don't you go and save your people? Because
- 23:55I am about to annihilate them. I am going to
- 23:59burn them to a crisp. I mean, God, at this point,
- 24:03was fed up about here. From a human perspective,
- 24:07like right here. You know you have that little
- 24:09bit as a parent that just keeps you from destroying
- 24:12your children? That's this part right here. Thank
- 24:16God you could see mine because if you had hair,
- 24:18you'd be guessing. Oh boy. Go down for your people
- 24:25whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have
- 24:27corrupted themselves. They have turned aside
- 24:30quickly out of the way that I commanded them.
- 24:36And they have made for themselves a golden calf
- 24:38and have worshipped it and sacrificed to it and
- 24:41said, These are your gods of Israel who brought
- 24:44you up out of the land of Egypt. And Yahweh said
- 24:48to Moses, I have seen this people, and behold,
- 24:52it is a stiff -necked people. Therefore, let
- 24:54me alone that my wrath may burn hot against them,
- 24:59and I may consume them in order that I may make
- 25:03a great nation of you, Moses. Because guess what?
- 25:08Nothing will stop my plan. I made a promise to
- 25:14Abraham, and that through Abraham I will bring
- 25:19the Messiah, and I'm going to do it with you
- 25:23now. But look what Moses does. Moses says, no,
- 25:27you can't do that. You can't do that. It's not
- 25:33like God didn't know he couldn't do that. Of
- 25:35course he wasn't. He could have. He wanted. He
- 25:39was. He was angry enough to do it. But he's testing
- 25:44Moses too. He's testing Moses too. He's seeing
- 25:52if Moses knows. He knows Moses knows. But God
- 25:56always tests his people. Tests the faith. When
- 26:02you go through trials of many kinds, it's the
- 26:04Lord testing you. And Moses implored. Yahweh
- 26:07Elohim and said oh Yahweh why does your wrath
- 26:10burn hot against your people whom you have brought
- 26:14out of the land of Egypt with great power and
- 26:16with a mighty hand you did it it wasn't me God
- 26:23knew he had Moses's heart and why should the
- 26:28Egyptians say with evil intent did he bring them
- 26:32out to kill them in the mountains and consume
- 26:34them with from the face of the earth. Turn from
- 26:38your burning anger and relent from your disaster
- 26:41against your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac,
- 26:45and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore
- 26:49by your own self and said to them, I will multiply
- 26:53your offspring. And God relents. God relents.
- 27:03He says, fine, Moses. I don't disagree with you.
- 27:08I'm just glad you said it. So let's go do something.
- 27:12We're going to take care of this. I'm going to
- 27:14take care of this. And what does he do? Fourth
- 27:21principle. So what God does is he takes Moses
- 27:27down and Moses takes the tablets and he Breaks
- 27:36them. Destroys the tablets that God wrote with
- 27:42his own finger. And then melts all the gold and
- 27:48then grinds it into a powder and forces everyone
- 27:51to eat it. And then after they're done, God says,
- 27:54now you're going to separate them. The wheat
- 27:58from the chaff. This is wonderful. Because this
- 28:01is what he does to the church. And he separates
- 28:04them. Those who are on God's side stand where
- 28:08Moses is. What do you think Aaron does? I'm on
- 28:13Moses' side. And if you remember, in chapter
- 28:2132, verse 35, it says, Then Yahweh sent a plague
- 28:34on the people because they made the calf the
- 28:39one that Aaron made. So after he gives them a
- 28:45plague, he also, before the plague, goes and
- 28:54grabs the Levites and the Levites take a sword.
- 28:59And he tells him, take a sword. And the Levites
- 29:01annihilate those who are on the other side. They
- 29:03just kill them all. And then everyone who's alive,
- 29:07who has made a decision, they get a plague. It's
- 29:15like, you're not getting out of it. The only
- 29:17one who didn't get a plague was Moses. But everyone
- 29:22else got a plague. So. What God does now, tablets
- 29:30are broken. God writes on the tablets that Moses
- 29:34cuts out with his own hands because he broke
- 29:37the ones the Lord had made with his own finger.
- 29:40So God takes these tablets. He cuts them out
- 29:45with his own finger, writes on them with his
- 29:46own finger. Moses breaks them, and he's like,
- 29:49yo, Moses, I'm not doing that again, buddy. You
- 29:52broke the first ones, you're going to cut out
- 29:54the second ones. So he goes and he cuts out the
- 29:57second ones. And in chapter 34, verse 1 through
- 30:014, it says this. The Lord said to Moses, cut
- 30:04for yourself two tablets of stone like the first.
- 30:08And I will write on the tablets the words that
- 30:12were on the first tablets which you broke. God
- 30:17writes the law. Because it's his law. Moses writes
- 30:24the rules. Be ready by morning and come up in
- 30:30the morning to Mount Sinai and present yourself
- 30:32there to me on the top of the mountain. No one
- 30:36shall come with you. And let no one be seen throughout
- 30:40all the mountain. Let no flocks or herds graze
- 30:44on opposite of that mountain. So Moses cut two
- 30:48tablets of stone like the first, and he rose
- 30:50early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai
- 30:52as the Lord had commanded him. And he took in
- 30:55his hands two tablets of stone. You're going
- 30:57to carry the burden now, buddy. This is exactly
- 31:01what happens. So God gives the law verbally.
- 31:06God writes the law with his own hand and gives
- 31:10the law. With his own hand through Moses. He
- 31:13cuts it all out. And then Moses breaks the law
- 31:17that God wrote. And so Moses has to now bring
- 31:19up the law on tablets. Which God then writes
- 31:24back on the tablet and brings it back down the
- 31:26mountain. So whether I give it to you by my own
- 31:29voice or I write it with my own finger. Or if
- 31:32a man brings it to you. You still won't obey
- 31:36me. It doesn't matter how it's going to come.
- 31:39It can come in a whirlwind. Man will not obey
- 31:46God. They cannot obey God. It's an impossibility.
- 31:51What hope do we have? 1 Corinthians chapter 2.
- 31:581 Corinthians chapter 2, 12 through 16. The same
- 32:03gift of faith needed and given to believe is
- 32:06the same gift of faith needed to obey the commands
- 32:10of God. The same faith that is needed to believe
- 32:13is the same faith that is needed to obey. Look
- 32:18what it says in 1 Corinthians 2. Now, we have
- 32:22received not the spirit of the world, but the
- 32:25spirit who is from God that we might understand
- 32:28the things freely given us. by God. There's a
- 32:35clue. What were the people lacking? The people
- 32:42were lacking the Spirit of God, their faith.
- 32:46I'm going to show that to you in a minute. That
- 32:48we might understand the things freely given by
- 32:50God, and we impart this in words not taught by
- 32:55human wisdom, but taught by the Spirit. interpreting
- 33:00spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
- 33:06The natural person does not accept the things
- 33:09of the Spirit of God for they are folly to him
- 33:12and he is not able to understand them because
- 33:14they are spiritually discerned. But the spiritual
- 33:19person judges all things but is himself to be
- 33:23judged by no one. Why? Because the Word of God
- 33:26judges him. For who has understood the mind of
- 33:30the Lord as to instruct him? But we have the
- 33:32mind of Christ. No one can come to Christ without
- 33:36the gift of faith by which the Holy Spirit brings
- 33:39the revelation of the truth of the word of God
- 33:41to their hearts and minds and the illumination
- 33:44work of the illuminating work of God, meaning
- 33:46the doctor of illumination, brings the truth
- 33:49to his mind and heart. Now I want you to think
- 33:53about that when you're dealing with the issue
- 33:54of the gospel. If they can't even understand
- 33:57the basic commandment, you should have no other
- 34:01gods before me, you should not make any gods
- 34:04of graven images, how in the world can anyone
- 34:08understand the gospel apart from the Spirit of
- 34:09God? Which is the greatest truth we have on the
- 34:14planet, that God himself died for his creation,
- 34:18for his people. Here's proof. Romans chapter
- 34:249, verse 31 and 32. And I did it. I'm going to
- 34:28be done on time. But that, chapter 9, verse 31
- 34:34and 32, but that Israel who pursued a law that
- 34:39would lead to righteousness did not succeed in
- 34:43reaching that law. In other words, the people
- 34:47of Israel pursued a righteousness Through the
- 34:51law, but they didn't succeed in reaching that
- 34:55standard. Why? Why? Why couldn't they, if they've
- 35:01obeyed, as the young rich man said, I've kept
- 35:06all your commandments. Well, then go sell all
- 35:08you have and give it to the poor. He walked away
- 35:10and never came back. Why? Why couldn't he obey?
- 35:16Because they did not pursue it by faith. They're
- 35:20faithless. But, as it were, based on works, they
- 35:30have stumbled over the stumbling stone. Christ,
- 35:34the law incarnate. The reality of their disobedience
- 35:42is because of the condition of what they are.
- 35:47Creatures that are corrupt. Creatures without
- 35:51faith. You cannot obey the Word of God without
- 35:54the gift of faith. And you cannot receive the
- 35:57gift of faith unless the Holy Spirit is present.
- 36:01And that's the reality when we're dealing with
- 36:04the Word of God. Do I really know it? And if
- 36:10I know it, am I obeying it? And if the Spirit
- 36:12of God is present in me, then I should be pursuing
- 36:15it. It doesn't mean that I'm Trying to live a
- 36:20life that comes off self -righteously. But I'm
- 36:23trying to live a life that's pleasing to my God
- 36:26because I have within me the living God who gives
- 36:30me the power and the grace to accomplish his
- 36:34word. It's called grace. It's not the license
- 36:38to sin. But it is the power to do what is right.
- 36:43We don't become Christians because we want to
- 36:45get out of hell card. We become Christians because
- 36:50God in his grace and mercy saves a people. Which
- 36:55then he diverts his wrath away from them. He
- 36:59doesn't save us from hell. He saves us from himself.
- 37:07There is nothing worse than being in the hands
- 37:11of an angry God. So. I hope you understand that
- 37:20you guys are believers. Men and women of the
- 37:25living God. Who he has empowered and gifted to
- 37:30walk in newness of life by the grace he has given
- 37:35you. And you can obey because he loves you. And
- 37:42because he lives in you. That's my challenge.
- 37:48As we read the word, that we ask the God of the
- 37:53word to reveal himself to us through his word.
- 37:57Alright? Father, I want to thank you so much
- 37:59for your goodness and faithfulness. Thank you
- 38:01for your word. And Lord, may we learn that the
- 38:06reality of your revelation of the truth of your
- 38:11word to us, through the work of illumination
- 38:15by the by the Holy Spirit, and the gift of faith
- 38:20that we can know and believe and do is a gift.
- 38:27It's just an amazing thing. Thank you for your
- 38:31word. Thank you for the examples that you have
- 38:32given us to avoid, but also the great power of
- 38:38grace for us to do. Lord, we praise you and thank
- 38:41you. In Jesus' name, amen. All right, we're going
- 38:44to sing. Bible Waits.
