Transcript
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, I did not grow up thinking that I was going to become a professional coach or a life coach.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, the first time someone suggested that I hire one, I was mildly offended, but if I really look back and I'm totally honest with myself, the signs were always there.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: The signs that I would make a great coach that I would become a leader in this industry, were kind of always there.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_00]: And this episode,
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: is made especially for someone who kind of can feel the science being there, but maybe they need someone to give them a little bit of permission, maybe they need someone to say like, oh my god, she finally understands what I'm going through, what I'm feeling, how I bring value in this world.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_00]: So let's go through the 10 science that you're meant to be a great coach.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: And some of these might hit home for you.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: All of them might hit home for you if that's the case.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_00]: There's links below to take the next step.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: If everything doesn't hit, that's not the point.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: The point is to say like if you have an inkling if you're watching this video, if you've been wishing wondering hoping thinking maybe you would get into this industry, maybe you would be great at it, let's get into it.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: All right, number one.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: This is really going to resonate with some people, but if you are the person who someone just tells you their life story to, in the first five minutes of meeting, maybe you have just counseled your Uber driver through a divorce on a four-mile drive, maybe you are sitting next to someone on your flight, and now you know their whole life story, and you've helped them figure out their next career move, or maybe you're at a random party, and instead of enjoying the party and popping around, you are holding up in the corner with someone you've heard all
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: You know where they're from, you have dinner plans next week and you're kind of like wait what just happened.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: That's number one sign.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: You would probably make a great coach or a great listener and you're probably asking really great questions, which leads me to sign number two.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: Sign number two is like, you are not going to be happy.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: with just a, hey, how are you and someone says good.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to be like, really?
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: What else?
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what else is going on with you?
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: Good or it is what it is.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: We'll just never be enough for you.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: You are more satisfied with deeper, open-ended questions that elicit a lot of information, a lot of deep sharing.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: And you give people a comfortable enough space to go there with you.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: So naturally, you're like, what do you actually want?
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: You're not obsessed with what society tells you to do.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: You believe in pushing boundaries and pushing, breaking down barriers and asking questions that really get to the heart of things?
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: That's you, number two.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_00]: All right, here's the other one.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: Are you, I don't know that I totally resonate with this one, but if it was serious enough, I would, are you the common the chaos?
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: Are you kind of the level headed one in the friend group?
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: Are you the person that,
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: People can count us as kind of like a steady rock.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: Like sure, you might be a little wild sometimes speaking for myself, or you may take risks or be someone who likes to do adventurous things.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: But are you stable in that identity?
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: Are you a calming force amidst the chaos?
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: That kind of presence makes such a great coat.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: Next one.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: This one I love.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: You are a someone who sees patterns that other people miss.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: Sidebar, this is why I also think I would make a great detective in my next life, but if you are someone that can really connect the dots or put puzzles together figuratively or literally, you would also make a great coach, coaches are patterned spotters.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: It kind of goes back to that thing where it's like how you do one thing is how you do everything, coaches pick up on that.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: So active listening, powerful questioning, reflecting all of that stuff, and we believe that you should be able to coach anyone around anything because the reality is once you are a professional pattern recognizer, you realize that having difficult conversations isn't just in a relationship.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's also what work.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's also with
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: family, it's also not speaking up for yourself when you get the wrong order at the restaurant, your lack of being able to follow through is something it probably doesn't just affect one area of your life or getting really big ideas, but never executing them.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's probably not just in your business.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, I digress pattern recognizers.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: top tier coaches, top tier.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: Number five, you crave meaningful work.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: I have fought with myself for over a decade now.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: I wish I could just be normal.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: I wish I could just be satisfied with the corporate job or a nine to five or a teaching job or something like I wish I wasn't so obsessed with finding meaning in every day and I wasn't so obsessed with having more of a lifestyle business where I actually love what I'm doing and I don't feel like
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: you would need to crave meaningful work, not just promotions and achievement, but feeling really good about the work that you contributed to the world every day.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: And you may be able to get that feeling.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: I generally felt good about the work I was doing even as a classroom teacher so so long ago.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: But did I feel like it was really the best use of my personal gifts?
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: No, because I was so constrained by standardized testing and rules and systems that were not actually built to help students.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: do well in the real world, so I needed to do something more meaningful.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: I often felt underutilized at my job.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: I often felt like, don't judge me, but I felt like I could do a lot of things better than the system had set up to do them.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like I was more intuitive, perhaps smarter, or perhaps just had more drive to actually make a lot of change than the people who were managing me.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like Kanye said, I just could not be managed.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we're having fun today.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: So if you crave meaningful work, coaching can absolutely bring that to you.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: It can also bring that to you on the job.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like a lot of people that come into IGC, is specifically for the PCC or level two coaching credential.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: They actually want to add that to their work, because they're already coaching in some capacity.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: They're already managing or leading, and they want to be able to do that even better and help people in a more meaningful way, because
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: it's not just knowing how to do something, it's understanding how people operate and how people are being and how people are showing up to their lives and their work and showing up better or more empowered or improved, often comes through being a really great coaching manager.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: We do have an episode about that, like how to coach
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: Put an implement coaching in your management.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: We'll link it here.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's with Laura Wildy.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: She's such an expert at this, but definitely check that out.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: If you're interested in adding coaching skills to your management or your leadership style, but ultimately doing that brings more meaning to you and the people that you are around.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: All right, number six.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: This one's a little bit more of a soft one, but it's if you are just kind of exhausted or burned out from being the strong one from being the resilient one from being the one who everything gets dumped on or everything is handed to you, you are always the fixer if you will and perhaps you are exhausted from being the strong one.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: And you've probably thought to yourself I honestly could do this better with more flexibility and with more freedom on my own.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I think I really deeply resonate with that one.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of brought that up in the previous sign.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: But if you feel that you could do better and more meaningful work without being, you know, having experiencing compassion fatigue or overwhelmed or burnout, coaching is a way for you to do that, to help people
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: with less burnout and exhaustion.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_00]: So number seven, if you are super into human behavior, if you are kind of into an LP or neuroscience or how the brain works or changing habits, like I think about books like atomic habits, I think it is or breaking the habit of being yourself or your super into knowing that you have the power to change your own life
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: you're gonna be a great coach.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: Once you know that you have the power to completely recreate your reality,
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: wheels up, baby, wheels up.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're really into this, you're curious about human behavior, you love being able to help people create new realities for themselves.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: You study mindset, you, you know, perhaps are into spirituality or some type of religion, even, and you know the power of prayer, of meditation, all of that top tier.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: I love this too because it's like, you are living life and you are doing it, but you're also observing how other people move through life, love that.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: Number eight, you value autonomy.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_00]: As if we're not all trying to jump out of the matrix at this point, not going to go there.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_00]: But you like owning your schedule, you like running your day, you like flexibility, you like
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: Thinking independently, creating solutions, creates your own experience.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: I come from the age of the choose your own adventure box.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: Those are my favorite books growing up, and I don't think anything's changed.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: All right, inner child Olivia is still reading that book and still flipping to the part that she likes.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: If that is you, coaching, and not just coaching, but coaching as a business.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: Now you can do coaching as a career, you can do coaching as a business.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: This one,
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: Honestly, coaching is not a career for someone who doesn't want to work.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't really want to work, I don't know what you're doing very well in here at something.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: But coaching does require work.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: I just believe that it's work that you actually love so doesn't really feel like work all the time, 80% of the time, 20% of the time, I don't really like doing administrative tasks and all that, but you get the point.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_00]: You still have to, you have to just want to do meaningful work and you want to have to
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so if you crave that autonomy and also if you know that you are a person who does what they say they're going to do.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_00]: If you are a person that follows through, if you are a person that, you know, given a lot of spaciousness and time, you can still use that to, you know, work on your business or work on your creation, that also is part of this.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: You have to be proactive about your time and you have to be really own the day.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: If you already are like that, transferring that skill over to a coaching career or coaching business, easy enough.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: But I will always say, you can't be someone who just doesn't want to work.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you want to completely automate it business, I still think it requires a good year of like building a following, getting leads and automation and all of that.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: Number nine, you're direct, but you're compassionate.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_00]: As a coach, someone who drives change, drives transformation, helps move people forward.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: You are not the BFF who's like, oh my god, I kind of stuck at that too.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: Let's have a glass of wine.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you can be the BFF in your friend relationships, but as a coach, you have to be direct, listen.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: From what I'm hearing, the choices that you are currently making are not bringing you to where you told me you want to be.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: So what's it going to be?
- 11:26[SPEAKER_00]: These choices or new ones that get us where we want to go.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, I love you.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_00]: I care.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: I am on team you.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_00]: And it's my job that you pay me a lot of money for to help you create the life that you wanted.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's up to you, but where are we going today?
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: That was just a little taste.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: All right, you have to be direct, but you have to be compassionate.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_00]: Direct communication really only works when you've built relationship.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_00]: But if you are a coach and you are empathetic, and you are kind, and you are a pattern recognizer, and you are someone who, like I said, naturally people are opening up to, wanting to hear about you, wanting to tell you their life story,
- 12:06[SPEAKER_00]: you can be direct and compassionate that it just goes with the territory.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_00]: These are obviously in no particular order.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: Number 10.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to find you if this is you, but you've googled how to become a live coach probably more than once.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: You have had little tabs open about like coaching programs or coaches that you love, maybe you've thought about hiring a coach,
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe you have our course catalog, maybe you have watched a bunch of these videos and you're like, I don't know, I don't know.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_00]: You can run, but you can't hide.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, your purpose will eventually start keeping you up at night.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: Don't prolong the inevitable.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: You can absolutely start coaching on the side.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: I never tell anyone to quit their job the day that they sign up for coaching school or become a coach unless, of course, you have been waiting years and saving years to embark on this.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: But you can absolutely start coaching.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: You can absolutely start training.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: You can actually start moving things forward.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: And if it's something that has been on your radar for weeks, months, and even years, it's not going to go anywhere.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: But the thing that's going to make you feel better about it is taking action.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're watching this, if this video found you, if you've ever thought, I think I could do that.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: You probably can.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: You probably can.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: So, there you go.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: There are 10 qualities that make excellent coaches.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: I would say even if you really identified with five of them, take the next step, go down to the show notes or go down to the description under this video, grab our 2026 coaching grief or grab our workshop, take some
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: Because if you really think about it, whether you're coaching in your career or starting a coaching business, that's exactly what you're going to be asking your future clients to do.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: And the only thing stopping you from working with those future clients is taking the next step today.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see you next time.
