- 0:26Speaker 1: worst kept secret around the New Orleans Saints was that
- 0:28Speaker 1: Kellen Moore was going to become the head coach, the
- 0:31Speaker 1: next worst kept secret would be that Dougnasmeyer would be
- 0:34Speaker 1: joining him in New Orleans as the team's offensive coordinator,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and that appears like it is about to happen. Early
- 0:40Speaker 1: on Thursday, Nick Underhill was the first report that the
- 0:43Speaker 1: team has finalized to deal with Doug nus Smeyer to
- 0:46Speaker 1: make him their new offensive coordinator there under Kellen Moore.
- 0:50Speaker 1: So now with your special teams coordinator offensive coordinator in place,
- 0:54Speaker 1: the only coordinator left today will be the defensive coordinator,
- 0:58Speaker 1: which we are anticipating will be Brandon Staley. But we'll
- 1:01Speaker 1: have that news. When we do the Dug nus Meyer piece, well,
- 1:05Speaker 1: it's no surprise, and I like it because of the
- 1:09Speaker 1: familiarity with Kellen Moore. Like we've discussed, dougnus Meyer came
- 1:13Speaker 1: into the NFL as a coach with Dallas in twenty eighteen,
- 1:17Speaker 1: where he was the tight ends coach in twenty eighteen
- 1:19Speaker 1: twenty nineteen. He was then promoted the quarterbacks coach in
- 1:22Speaker 1: twenty twenty, twenty twenty through twenty twenty two there with
- 1:26Speaker 1: Kellen Moore as the OC, and then when Kellen Moore
- 1:29Speaker 1: went to the Chargers in twenty twenty three, nus Meyer
- 1:31Speaker 1: went with him. When Kellen Moore went to the Eagles
- 1:33Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four, and Nousmeyer went with him as
- 1:35Speaker 1: the quarterbacks coach. So these two have coached alongside each
- 1:37Speaker 1: other every year since twenty eighteen, and it is that familiarity.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I think that's probably the most appealing thing here. When
- 1:49Speaker 1: Kellen Moore was introduced a week ago today, one of
- 1:53Speaker 1: the things he talked about was using past relationships to
- 1:56Speaker 1: build a staff.
- 1:56Speaker 2: There's tremendous value for experience when you've worked with someone
- 2:00Speaker 2: just for continuity's sake. But I think the blessing and
- 2:03Speaker 2: wonderful thing that you learn is as you go through
- 2:05Speaker 2: this journey, you know, going to Los Angeles, going to Philly,
- 2:07Speaker 2: there's a lot of coaches that if I just stuck
- 2:10Speaker 2: in Dallas, I would have never met, we never got
- 2:12Speaker 2: to team up with. And so you understand that as
- 2:14Speaker 2: you go through this process, you're gonna have an opportunity
- 2:16Speaker 2: to meet and team up with coaches that maybe you
- 2:18Speaker 2: haven't done it with, and they're gonna be really special
- 2:20Speaker 2: and they're gonna have a huge impact on us.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And there's likely going to be more coaches that he's
- 2:26Speaker 1: familiar with that join the staff, like we mentioned Brandon Staley.
- 2:28Speaker 1: But I decided today to kind of dig deep a
- 2:31Speaker 1: little into Doug nus Meyer's background as an offensive coordinator.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And this conversation we're about to have is going to
- 2:38Speaker 1: come with an asterisk because Kellen Moore is still going
- 2:41Speaker 1: to call the plays. He said that as well in
- 2:43Speaker 1: his opening press conference, and that's what we all anticipate
- 2:46Speaker 1: is going to happen. So while yes, nus Meyer will
- 2:49Speaker 1: be the offensive coordinator, he will work hand in hand
- 2:52Speaker 1: with Kellen Moore, it is still going to be Kellen
- 2:55Speaker 1: Moore's team, Kellen Moore's offense, Kellen Moore calling plays. But
- 2:58Speaker 1: if we go back and look at ugness Meyer's experience
- 3:01Speaker 1: as an offensive coordinator, quite honestly, it's not very good
- 3:07Speaker 1: if we're just calling it. Calling a spat to spade here.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Dougness Meyer has never been NOC in the NFL, and
- 3:16Speaker 1: he was an offensive coordinator in college every year from
- 3:19Speaker 1: two thousand and eight through twenty seventeen. In two thousand
- 3:24Speaker 1: and eight at Fresno State, the Bulldogs finished thirty seventh
- 3:28Speaker 1: in total offense. Next year, he goes to Washington. He's
- 3:33Speaker 1: the Washington OC for three years twenty nine, ten and eleven.
- 3:36Speaker 1: By the way, the two thousand and nine offense faced LSU,
- 3:40Speaker 1: Remember they game up in Seattle. Their offenses in three
- 3:45Speaker 1: years went from seventieth to ninety sixth then to twenty
- 3:51Speaker 1: fifth in twenty eleven. He goes to Alabama in twelve
- 3:56Speaker 1: and thirteen. We know Alabama won the national championship in
- 3:58Speaker 1: twenty twelve and they finished twelfth and seventeenth in the
- 4:02Speaker 1: country in total offense. That was by far the high
- 4:05Speaker 1: watermark for Dougnas Meyer as in OC. After twenty thirteen,
- 4:10Speaker 1: he goes to Michigan for one season they were one
- 4:13Speaker 1: hundred and twelfth in the country and total offense gone.
- 4:16Speaker 1: And then it goes to Florida for three years twenty fifteen, sixteen,
- 4:19Speaker 1: and seventeen. All three years they were in the triple
- 4:22Speaker 1: digits and total offense one hundredth one o seven one
- 4:26Speaker 1: oh nine. They got worse each year. So from two
- 4:31Speaker 1: thousand and eight to twenty seventeen, ten years, ten consecutive
- 4:38Speaker 1: seasons at Dougnas, Meyer was an offensive coordinator. Four of
- 4:43Speaker 1: the ten years they finished one hundred. His offenses were
- 4:47Speaker 1: one hundredth or worse, and he also had offenses finishing
- 4:52Speaker 1: seventieth and ninety sixth, so six of the ten they
- 4:57Speaker 1: were the bottom half of the country. The two best
- 5:01Speaker 1: years he had he had with Alabama, which candidly under
- 5:05Speaker 1: Nick Saban, I could probably have gone call plays and
- 5:08Speaker 1: we'd have been pretty good. It's not to say Doug
- 5:12Speaker 1: nasse Meyer is a bad offensive coordinator. I don't mean
- 5:15Speaker 1: to say that. I'm just laying out there all the
- 5:18Speaker 1: info and the data points, so we have it. He
- 5:21Speaker 1: was an offensive coordinator for ten years in college football,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and it wasn't great, but he got a lot of
- 5:26Speaker 1: big time jobs from that point on. He became an
- 5:31Speaker 1: NFL position coach, coaching tight ends with Cowboys for two years,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and then quarterbacks, which he's coached for the last four years,
- 5:36Speaker 1: and now an offensive coordinator in the NFL for the
- 5:39Speaker 1: first time. So, look, there's a lot show like about
- 5:43Speaker 1: this hire, and I've expressed that, like, I'm good with
- 5:46Speaker 1: this hire because it is still Kellen Moore's offense. Kellen
- 5:51Speaker 1: Moore is gonna call plays, it's his offense. So what
- 5:54Speaker 1: I really want is someone around Kellen Moore who he's
- 5:59Speaker 1: comfortable with, that's going to help nurture and develop ideas
- 6:02Speaker 1: and all the and support and all those sorts of things.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Someone whose eyes in mind he trusts. Not that dissimilar
- 6:09Speaker 1: from old Sneaky Pete and Sean Payton. It was his offense.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Pete Carmichael was the OC and was a really good
- 6:18Speaker 1: ally for Sean Payton. It feels very similar here with
- 6:21Speaker 1: nuss Meyer as an ally to Kellen Moore, a trusted lieutenant.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And when you look at the offensive staff, at least
- 6:28Speaker 1: the top of it right now, Kellen Moore, Doug nus Meyer,
- 6:32Speaker 1: Scott Tolzy Head, coach, offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach. All three
- 6:38Speaker 1: were NFL quarterbacks that didn't have great NFL careers, but
- 6:42Speaker 1: all three were NFL quarterbacks. So you've got a lot
- 6:45Speaker 1: of experience, NFL experience, quarterback experience, and synergies among the
- 6:52Speaker 1: staff where these guys know each other pretty well. I
- 6:56Speaker 1: like that. I also like in this as ancillary. I
- 6:59Speaker 1: don't think this matters tremendously, but I do like that.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Dougnus Meyer has ties to New Orleans into Louisiana. We
- 7:07Speaker 1: know that he was drafted by the New Orleans Saints
- 7:09Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety four, played quarterback for the Saints. He
- 7:13Speaker 1: met his wife, Christy when he lived here. She is
- 7:16Speaker 1: from Lake Charles. Garrett, as we know, was born in
- 7:19Speaker 1: Lake Charles. So you have a lot of a lot
- 7:25Speaker 1: of synergies that make sense here with this hire, both
- 7:29Speaker 1: with Kellen Moore's relationship with nus Meyer, dougnas Meyer, dougnas
- 7:33Speaker 1: Meyer's relationship and familiarity with the organization, the city, the state,
- 7:37Speaker 1: a lot of those ties there, and as we'll continue
- 7:43Speaker 1: to say, though your head coach and your staff are
- 7:48Speaker 1: part of the equation, they're a big part of the equation.
- 7:52Speaker 1: But the bigger part for the New Orleans Saints moving
- 7:55Speaker 1: forward is less about Kellen Moore or Dougnas Meyer, Scott Tolsen,
- 8:00Speaker 1: Brandon staleor any of that. It's going to be at
- 8:02Speaker 1: this front office pushing the reset button on the roster,
- 8:06Speaker 1: getting your cap in order, acquiring draft capital, respecting your
- 8:12Speaker 1: draft capital instead of constantly trading up expending future draft
- 8:18Speaker 1: capital to be aggressive, to go get a player that
- 8:21Speaker 1: you think is going to help you win now. The
- 8:25Speaker 1: sooner this organization realizes they're not close to winning, and
- 8:29Speaker 1: they're willing to be patient to go through a rebuild
- 8:32Speaker 1: and build this thing brick by brick the sooner they
- 8:35Speaker 1: acknowledge that the sooner the Saints are going to get
- 8:37Speaker 1: back to being a competitive team. And I hope that's
- 8:39Speaker 1: under Kellen Moore with this staff as it's assembled, and
- 8:43Speaker 1: I hope it's sooner than later. But while I like
- 8:47Speaker 1: the Doug nuss Meyer higher and I think it makes
- 8:51Speaker 1: a lot of sense, there are reasons to question it.
- 8:54Speaker 1: He's never been an NFLOC and when he was a
- 8:57Speaker 1: college OC for ten years it wasn't great. But as
- 9:03Speaker 1: an asset, a resource and ally a sounding board for
- 9:06Speaker 1: Kellen Moore. I like it a lot. What I got
- 9:09Speaker 1: to see though, is changes in the roster, changes in
- 9:13Speaker 1: the roster. Patients with this staff to rebuild it as
- 9:16Speaker 1: you rebuild your roster. But that's more on Mickey Loomis
- 9:18Speaker 1: and this front office than it is on Kellen Moore
- 9:20Speaker 1: or dougnass Meyer. But Saint atho C it's Doug nash Meyer.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Wait for the official announcement from New Orleans, but apparently
- 9:27Speaker 1: it is done. Dougnass Meyer will be the Saints offensive
- 9:29Speaker 1: coordinator as expected,
