Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: You Are NOT The Only Person On the Struggle Bus
Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: What is going on? Everyone? Emily a body here.
- 0:19Speaker 2: You are listening to another installment of five Minute Friday
- 0:24Speaker 2: from Hurdle.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I hope everyone had a good week. I had a
- 0:27Speaker 1: good week.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I feel like it was extremely productive all by admittedly
- 0:32Speaker 2: a little difficult for me because I have just been
- 0:35Speaker 2: trying to get my feedback under me over here post vacation.
- 0:40Speaker 2: What I will say is that for me, the best
- 0:46Speaker 2: part about being back home is getting back into a routine.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Leaving New York and like going away for a few
- 0:54Speaker 2: weeks for the most part, really reminded me of the
- 0:59Speaker 2: importance of routine and that we get to do these
- 1:03Speaker 2: things oftentimes that give back to our bodies on the
- 1:08Speaker 2: regular and set us up for success in the day
- 1:10Speaker 2: to day, which is pretty rad Anyway, that is not
- 1:13Speaker 2: what I'm here to talk to you about today. What
- 1:16Speaker 2: I'm here to talk to you about today is a
- 1:19Speaker 2: DM that I got in my inbox the other day.
- 1:21Speaker 2: The DM asked me, if I ever feel as though
- 1:25Speaker 2: it is impossible to run a mile.
- 1:30Speaker 1: That long pause is deliberate. The answer to this question
- 1:34Speaker 1: is yes. Here's the deal.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yes, no matter how long someone has been doing something,
- 1:41Speaker 2: especially when it comes to some form of physical fitness,
- 1:45Speaker 2: there are going to be days that that person feels
- 1:48Speaker 2: as though they are on the struggle bus. Even the
- 1:52Speaker 2: most elite of elite athletes have these days where doing
- 1:56Speaker 2: the thing that they get paid to do feels difficult.
- 2:00Speaker 1: For me.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I mean, just this week, getting back to that normal
- 2:04Speaker 2: routine that I spoke about, I was super intimidated about it.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I was nervous about it. I knew that going out
- 2:11Speaker 2: for that first you know, chunk of miles, the five
- 2:14Speaker 2: mile run that I had on Wednesday, was going to
- 2:17Speaker 2: feel like absolute junk. I have been eating and drinking
- 2:22Speaker 2: and dining and staying up late and waking up early
- 2:25Speaker 2: and all the things. And so is that the formula
- 2:27Speaker 2: for me to wake up and feel my best?
- 2:30Speaker 1: Hell no, not at all.
- 2:32Speaker 2: But I knew that getting up, getting out and pushing
- 2:37Speaker 2: myself was gonna make me feel good again, and so.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I did it.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And on that run, I mean the first minute, half mile, mile,
- 2:47Speaker 2: who am I getting?
- 2:48Speaker 1: Two miles? I didn't feel truly.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Like myself until maybe hmm, maybe mile four, and even
- 2:57Speaker 2: then it didn't feel stellar. So the question do you
- 3:00Speaker 2: ever feel like it's impossible to go run a mile?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Yes?
- 3:04Speaker 2: But then I remind myself of the girl back in
- 3:08Speaker 2: two thousand and eight who literally actually felt like it.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Was impossible to run a mile.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I was no good at running, and I say that
- 3:18Speaker 2: with certainty.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Now.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I did not excel at it. I found it extremely, extremely,
- 3:24Speaker 2: extremely difficult. But that process of learning how to run,
- 3:30Speaker 2: that journey taught me so much about myself. And with
- 3:36Speaker 2: time and with diligence and with a lot of hard work,
- 3:39Speaker 2: I can say, now, God, I mean, where are we
- 3:43Speaker 2: fourteen years later that I'm not half bad at it?
- 3:46Speaker 1: Right? But again I digress.
- 3:50Speaker 2: There are going to be times that the thing that
- 3:53Speaker 2: you identify with the go to way that you sweat,
- 3:57Speaker 2: or maybe it has nothing to do with sweat at all.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Maybe it's a writer who feels like writing is impossible
- 4:03Speaker 2: and they have writer's block. Or maybe it's a lawyer
- 4:05Speaker 2: who is trying to defend a case and feels like
- 4:07Speaker 2: it is absolutely like climbing Mount Everest. Or maybe it's
- 4:11Speaker 2: an accountant who feels less completely inundated and overwhelmed with
- 4:15Speaker 2: all of the numbers that are sitting right in front
- 4:16Speaker 2: of them. You get the idea here. What I'm saying
- 4:19Speaker 2: is that no matter what it is that.
- 4:21Speaker 1: You are doing.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Wherever you are, whatever you are working on, there will
- 4:25Speaker 2: always be moments where things feel tough, but you have
- 4:29Speaker 2: the opportunity to decide how you react to your thoughts.
- 4:35Speaker 2: If you go into this activity that feels like again
- 4:38Speaker 2: that analogy of climbing Mount Everest and you give up,
- 4:42Speaker 2: well that's on you. And that's not to say that
- 4:46Speaker 2: there aren't going to be moments, times, situations where you
- 4:52Speaker 2: do need to call it. That's cool, you can call
- 4:54Speaker 2: it every once in a while. You've got to listen
- 4:57Speaker 2: to your body, but you also need to be able
- 5:00Speaker 2: to call your own bullshit.
- 5:01Speaker 1: So if you are quote unquote listening to your.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Body for a month strong and your quote unquote body
- 5:08Speaker 2: is quote unquote telling you that it's just too much,
- 5:12Speaker 2: well maybe you need to be honest with yourself. So
- 5:16Speaker 2: I want you to know you're not alone if the
- 5:18Speaker 2: thing feels hard, right, But the good news is that
- 5:22Speaker 2: we can do hard things.
- 5:25Speaker 1: If you want some more support, if you want more
- 5:27Speaker 1: reminders of.
- 5:28Speaker 2: That, head on over to the Hurdler's Super Secret Facebook group.
- 5:31Speaker 2: In there, we're having a lot of good conversations and
- 5:33Speaker 2: I'd love for you to be a part of it.
- 5:36Speaker 2: My prompt for you this week, what is one thing
- 5:39Speaker 2: that you can say to yourself when you're in the
- 5:42Speaker 2: middle of that next tough effort? Again, what is one
- 5:46Speaker 2: mantra one thing that you can say to yourself when
- 5:49Speaker 2: you are in the middle of that next tough effort.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I'm going to refer you over to the link in
- 5:54Speaker 2: the show notes to click and read the weekly Hurdle newsletter.
- 5:58Speaker 2: There you can get my highlights and content picks of
- 6:01Speaker 2: the week. But I do want to make sure that
- 6:04Speaker 2: I talk up this week's read highlight, of course, which
- 6:08Speaker 2: is green Lights by Matthew McConaughey. It's this month's Hurdle
- 6:12Speaker 2: book Club pick, and we are going to be getting
- 6:15Speaker 2: together this coming Monday to chat all about it.
- 6:18Speaker 1: So if you want to come hang out, I'd love
- 6:20Speaker 1: to have you there. The link to.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Register for book club is also in the show notes.
- 6:26Speaker 2: And now a listener question.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Hey, Emily, it's Cammy Silva. I'm a Brazilian living in Amsterdam.
- 6:32Speaker 3: In our work, Tommy, you figure for Corporate Communications. Huge fan,
- 6:38Speaker 3: so thanks for all the content on Hurdle. And yeah,
- 6:40Speaker 3: so I'm also a runner and I'm a newbie biker,
- 6:45Speaker 3: So any tips that you could give on cycling as also,
- 6:49Speaker 3: I know that you also started like recently or get
- 6:52Speaker 3: back to it recently, so yeah, I think that kind
- 6:56Speaker 3: of content would be awesome.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Thanks for the space.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Bye, Thanks for your question, Cammy oh Man. I mean,
- 7:04Speaker 2: where to begin right with cycling tips? There's so many
- 7:06Speaker 2: to offer you. I have written about this in the
- 7:10Speaker 2: Weekly Hurdle newsletter before, so I'm going to direct you
- 7:13Speaker 2: to the link in the show notes with the blog
- 7:16Speaker 2: post all about this. What I will say here is
- 7:19Speaker 2: that I have two big tips for newbie cyclists.
- 7:23Speaker 1: One, do not go it alone.
- 7:25Speaker 2: The best part of cycling, in my mind, is the
- 7:27Speaker 2: opportunity to explore new.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Places with friends.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Especially over the pandemic, it was such a great opportunity
- 7:34Speaker 2: for me to get up and get out and enjoy
- 7:36Speaker 2: getting to know new people.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Also, I mean from.
- 7:39Speaker 2: A safety perspective, if you're out on the road and
- 7:42Speaker 2: something happens, whether you happen to somehow you know, get
- 7:45Speaker 2: injured or tweak something or something happens to your bike,
- 7:48Speaker 2: it's really really helpful to have someone there alongside you
- 7:52Speaker 2: so that you can tackle that hurdle together. My second
- 7:55Speaker 2: tip is make sure you gear up smart. You might think, hey,
- 8:00Speaker 2: I'm just going to hop on a bicycle, and that
- 8:01Speaker 2: sounds great, but if you're going to be out there
- 8:03Speaker 2: for a while, and if you're really getting into road riding,
- 8:06Speaker 2: then make sure you have some of the essentials. I'm
- 8:09Speaker 2: talking padded bike shorts or bibbs, a cycling jersey. Make
- 8:13Speaker 2: sure you are wearing sunscreen because man, that shorts tamline
- 8:16Speaker 2: can be super aggressive. Of course, helmets are clutch, and
- 8:20Speaker 2: a great pair of cycling socks is not to be missed.
- 8:24Speaker 2: In that blog post I'm sharing in the show notes,
- 8:26Speaker 2: you'll also find some of my favorite picks, so I
- 8:29Speaker 2: hope that you go and check it out. I do
- 8:31Speaker 2: have a little opportunity for you a special giveaway of sorts.
- 8:35Speaker 2: I'm going to be giving one person who leaves me
- 8:37Speaker 2: a voice message with a question a pair of the
- 8:41Speaker 2: Gooder sunglasses of their choice. So click on over to
- 8:44Speaker 2: the show notes, check out all the links in there,
- 8:46Speaker 2: but especially leave me a voice message. I will announce
- 8:50Speaker 2: the winner and next week's five Minute Friday.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along with the show on social It's.
- 8:55Speaker 2: At Hurdle Podcast. I am over at Emily Body another hurdle.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Good catch you guys next time.
