- 0:00Welcome to unspoken career truths.
- 0:02I'm Cara Wood. And I'm Lauren Levac Gilbert.
- 0:05And we're here to be the Co workers you can trust.
- 0:08In just 10 minutes, we'll cover the strategies you need, the
- 0:11mistakes to avoid, and the insider secrets no one tells you
- 0:15so you can show up with confidence at work.
- 0:18Hey Cara, how's it going? Good.
- 0:22Today we're going to talk about something.
- 0:24It starts with AV. What do you think it is?
- 0:27Well, I know what it is, but it should be something clever to
- 0:31guess that starts with the victories.
- 0:34Yeah, that would be funny if we talked about victories,
- 0:36actually. It's value, and you didn't know,
- 0:39so I guess my joke fell flat. But value, I think it's a word
- 0:43that carries a lot of weight and a lot of power.
- 0:47And I think it's one that many people think about often in
- 0:50their professional life and their personal life in so many
- 0:53different ways. How am I bringing value?
- 0:56What value do I bring to my role?
- 0:58What value do I bring to my family or my relationships?
- 1:01Like it's a very, it's a small world word, but it's a very
- 1:03complicated word. And I think it can be really
- 1:06tricky how you like measure it or how you feel value, how you
- 1:11feel valued or your principles or standards and like how you
- 1:16how we associate it with worth. I think that's why it's like
- 1:19such a strong word that people think about.
- 1:22I don't know. What do you think, Cara?
- 1:23How do you? Well, you know, what's funny is
- 1:25I just recently learned that the phrase pursuit of happiness that
- 1:30Thomas Jefferson put into our Constitution isn't necessarily
- 1:35what we think of as happiness, where we're like, yeah, like,
- 1:38just do something fun. He actually would have meant it
- 1:42in the, in the way of like when you're when you are fulfilled,
- 1:47when you're doing something that's fulfilling.
- 1:49And so hearing you talk about like value, I'm thinking a lot
- 1:52about that same thing where you might say like value.
- 1:56It's when you buy, you know, a multi pack and you save some
- 1:59money. But then there's another way to
- 2:01think about value, especially at work where it's like, are you
- 2:04contributing? Are you feeling valued?
- 2:06Are you feeling like you're fulfilling a purpose or a
- 2:09meaning in your life? I love that Cara and I think
- 2:13that's super important. And that's like another
- 2:15dimension of value, right? Like do you feel like you're
- 2:19being fulfilled, but also are you bringing that value
- 2:23externally as well when you're at work or in your personal life
- 2:27and, and all of those different aspects.
- 2:28So that's what we're going to focus on today.
- 2:32And from a professional standpoint, I think it's very
- 2:36heavily associated with like things like imposter syndrome,
- 2:40right? Because if you don't know your
- 2:42value or you don't feel your value in an organization, one,
- 2:45it's hard to expect others to kind of recognize it.
- 2:49And also it's hard for you to kind of be your, your best at
- 2:53work because you might be questioning things when maybe
- 2:56you don't need to. And so it can, it can create a
- 2:59really challenge and challenging dynamic.
- 3:02I don't know, Clara. Have you ever experienced that?
- 3:05Well, it's interesting. I'm thinking about how there's
- 3:08different ways that people feel valued.
- 3:10And so I like as a manager, it was really interesting for me
- 3:15when at different places asking people the question of like,
- 3:18what makes you feel valued? Because it's not always a raise.
- 3:22And some people it's like, hey, I need to kind of hear feedback
- 3:25daily. You sort of like realize it,
- 3:27like I should be checking in and telling people they're valuable
- 3:31every day so that they feel part of the community.
- 3:33And so again, like you're saying, it's really easy to kind
- 3:37of second guess yourself or to not even know how other people
- 3:42and what kind of feedback they need to feel valued.
- 3:46And it, it makes such a difference when you are going to
- 3:48a place where you know you're contributing and where you know,
- 3:52you feel, you know that other people are glad to see you when
- 3:55you come through the door or glad to see you when you pop up
- 3:57in a meeting or glad for the thing you do and they're
- 4:00thanking you for it. So I think that is a piece of
- 4:02value. And then of course, we do all
- 4:05still also want the raise and the communication of what you've
- 4:09actually contributed to the business.
- 4:12I think that's such a great point, Cara.
- 4:13You know, it reminds me of the love languages, you know, the
- 4:16like 4 love languages, right? Like it's really important when
- 4:20you're in a personal relationship to understand like
- 4:22how the other piece person feels loved.
- 4:24And I think from a work standpoint, that's super
- 4:27important too, whether it's you and your manager or you and your
- 4:31team, like really understanding what drives them, what makes
- 4:34them feel good. Because to your point, Cara,
- 4:36everybody's different, right? Like, yeah.
- 4:39And it on big and small scales. Like some people love swag.
- 4:42And like, I could care less about swag, but I love
- 4:45compliments. And like, you tell me a
- 4:47compliment or you write something down that I did well,
- 4:50like, I'm happy. So yeah.
- 4:53No, I absolutely love that. Yeah.
- 4:54Like for me, I like to be recognized for my work, right?
- 4:58Like, and I like people to acknowledge it.
- 5:01I'm also medium on swag, but you know, like recognition and also
- 5:05like getting the credit for the work that you've done.
- 5:08Like that's really big for me. So for everybody listening, I
- 5:11would encourage you to ask your team what makes your team feel
- 5:15valued and really understand that and start putting it into
- 5:18practice. And I think you'll see the teams
- 5:20operate even at a higher caliber because they're feeling like
- 5:24they're valued and they're part of the team.
- 5:26Yeah, and honestly, like having your team vote on things like,
- 5:30would they rather a pizza party? Would they rather a gift cards?
- 5:33Would they rather a competition? Like different teams are
- 5:36different. And when you can do something
- 5:38that's a collective reward for the group, that can be really
- 5:42powerful. I love that example.
- 5:44So I always won something, a very small team.
- 5:46And you know how you usually have like team retreats, right,
- 5:49Where you either do planning or everybody goes somewhere and
- 5:52does something fun. We talked about it and we were
- 5:54like, what would we want to do that would make us feel like
- 5:56connected but also give us time to like reset.
- 5:59And since it was a small team, we went to a spa and we did
- 6:02yoga. And I was like, I've never done
- 6:05this from a work perspective, but because we were small, it's
- 6:08easier when you're a smaller team.
- 6:10We could do that. But it was so true to who we
- 6:13were as a team and how we approach things.
- 6:16And so it felt really great and I felt super valued and we came
- 6:20together and connected. Yeah, one of my favorites is I
- 6:24was on a team where we had snacks in the office all the
- 6:27time, but we would run these little like weekly things where
- 6:31when it was your week you could pick the snack mix and it was
- 6:35like weird snack mixes. So mine for example is Fritos
- 6:40and Junior Mints and like. I just so many questions Cara.
- 6:46But everyone secretly maybe not has this weird mix of stuff and
- 6:51so you could just kind of like pick your salty and you're sweet
- 6:55and your whatever flavors and not mix them together for your
- 6:59team. But everyone then sort of
- 7:01enjoyed and got to know you in a different way.
- 7:03It was very fun. A lot of follow up questions but
- 7:08I'm gonna leave that one there. But I do love Junior Mints.
- 7:13So let's talk about how can you get clear on value for for
- 7:17yourself. And then I think we hit on some
- 7:19for if you're a manager and you have a team.
- 7:20So definitely asking them how they feel valued, but for you
- 7:24tracking your impact, right? And that can be like a list of
- 7:28wins. It can be a list of projects.
- 7:30It can be a list of the times that you felt like you were
- 7:35adding value or you felt great in your role or you felt like
- 7:38you were contributing. I think it's important to really
- 7:40kind of write those things down just so that you remember them,
- 7:44right, because it's end of year review time.
- 7:47I know I was just writing mine a week or so ago and it's hard to
- 7:52remember back. But I have this document where I
- 7:54write all these things down. And if I ever get like an
- 7:57accolade or someone says something or says, Hey, I really
- 8:00like this because of XY or ZI put it in that document so that
- 8:04I can look and I can review. And it, it makes it easier to
- 8:08remember everything you've done and the impact you've made
- 8:10versus trying to like, be like, what did I do like 3 months ago?
- 8:14Yeah. And one of the things as we're
- 8:17talking about value, I'm also thinking about the values you
- 8:20have. And many like, for me, a lot of
- 8:25times noticing something that I've done well also then
- 8:29contributes back to like the rubric of either what my job
- 8:32description is, which makes filling out yourself assessments
- 8:36really easier because you can also kind of say, OK, did I
- 8:40actually meet these kind of goals and not just what you kind
- 8:43of guessed you would meet at, but was I just fulfilling the
- 8:47job buckets? But then also kind of what do
- 8:50you value? Because it's really easy to also
- 8:52look at all these external factors.
- 8:53But it's things like if it's important to you, to, you know,
- 8:57show up as your whole authentic self at work, no one's going to
- 9:00really reward or call that out. But if it's important to you, it
- 9:02might still be worthwhile keeping track of when you've
- 9:05done that really well and you can reflect on it and still like
- 9:08your job or whatever that you know is to you.
- 9:11If it's, you know, doing something nice for Co workers,
- 9:14building out like community there whatever those values,
- 9:18other values that you might have in addition to the actual value
- 9:22of the job description. I think that's an.
- 9:24That's an excellent point, Cara, because I think value, like I
- 9:28said, has many different dimensions.
- 9:31So another thing you can do is also ask for feedback.
- 9:34So I'm going to go back to the yearly review.
- 9:36If you have a yearly review, a lot of times you get peer
- 9:38feedback, right? So asking other people like what
- 9:41do you see as my strengths or how did I make the most impact
- 9:45on you this year for this project we worked on or
- 9:48something like that? I think it's important also to
- 9:51have to see yourself through other people's eyes, because
- 9:54sometimes we can be super critical and it can be really
- 9:57hard to see what value we're driving or how we're creating
- 10:00impact. But it's much clearer for other
- 10:02people and you want to get that feedback and you want to hear it
- 10:05from them. Yeah, and for anyone who missed
- 10:07last week, we did a whole feedback week.
- 10:09So there's lots of ways to talk about feedback.
- 10:12How to give and how to get. It's a 2 parter.
- 10:14Make sure you listen to that one.
- 10:16And then the other thing, I think from a value perspective,
- 10:19and this is more around what you were saying, Carl, with like job
- 10:22description and things like that, it's really important to
- 10:24know your value in your role and in your organization.
- 10:27So know what your salary range is for your position, know what
- 10:31the job description is for your position in other organizations.
- 10:35Know what skills are required or potentially what new
- 10:39certifications you can get. It's just always important to
- 10:41kind of stay on top of the market as well because the
- 10:47person that you work for or the organization that you work for
- 10:50might not always be looking at those things, But it's important
- 10:52for you to do that so that you can stay on par and also make
- 10:55sure that you're getting paid for the value that you're
- 10:58delivering. Yeah, one thing I didn't
- 11:00realize, like early in my career was how different job titles can
- 11:04be from company to company. Depending on.
- 11:06Size, yeah, and some companies are really strict about it and
- 11:10they have all these levels and they really cap what you can
- 11:13make depending on what your title is.
- 11:16But then when you move from somewhere else where maybe
- 11:18you've had a title, they're kind of briefly looking maybe at your
- 11:21company's size and guessing at what level you are.
- 11:24So if you have a good sense of, well, here's what other roles
- 11:28that sound like me but may have different titles are, it's
- 11:32actually really helpful to be in conversation when you're job
- 11:36hunting to then have that, well, this is what it's similar to
- 11:39another kind of organization or a different organization.
- 11:42It might be called this, but here's what my scope of work
- 11:44was. So understanding that it's not
- 11:47going to be just a quick like job title and then you're going
- 11:49to know your salary right away. So just to kind of sum it all
- 11:52up, make sure that you know your value, you know your values, and
- 11:57you know what makes your team feel valued.
- 12:00So many different aspects. And when we're talking about the
- 12:03word value, but maybe write down this week three things that you
- 12:08felt were really impactful, where you felt valued or how you
- 12:12felt valued. And then maybe ask a colleague,
- 12:15because it's end of your time, about how they saw you creating
- 12:19impact on a project or what some of your strengths were, and
- 12:22you'll see all of those little pieces that might not come into
- 12:25view in your own eyes, but through other people's.
- 12:28Hi everyone I wish you all victory with your values.
