- 0:07The New York Islanders faced the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden for the 1975
- 0:12NHL Playoffs. Game 3 of the preliminary rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs took place on
- 0:17April 11, 1975. The Islanders and Rangers finished evenly matched during the regular
- 0:22season, finishing in second and third place in the Patrick Division. The Rangers had qualified
- 0:28for the playoffs for several years but rarely were able to get past the semifinals. 1975
- 0:33was the first time the Islanders had entered the playoffs, having just entered into the
- 0:37league as a new expansion team in 1972. The best of three series was tied at one game
- 0:42apiece and this is the audio from Game 3 taken from the WMCA New York Radio broadcast featuring
- 0:49announcers Dom Valentino and Jim Garvey.
- 1:19The New York Islanders and the New York Rangers hook up in Game 3 in the first series of the
- 1:26Stanley Cup. Each team surprisingly enough has won on the other's eyes. The Islanders
- 1:32coming through on Tuesday night, 3-2 and last night at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island
- 1:38it was the New York Rangers overwhelming the New York Islanders by the final count of 8-3.
- 1:44Last night's games featured a record total of 50 penalties, surpassing the previous high
- 1:49of 43 penalties set last year in a series featuring the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia
- 1:54Flyers. Last night's game has been called everything from a Pier 6 brawl to a tremendous
- 2:00hockey exciting hockey game. Take your pick, the game's a matter of the record and now
- 2:05it's Game 3 tonight, both teams looking for the win that will catapult them into the next
- 2:11round of the Stanley Cup. Coming up my interview, my guest on Islander Highlights, Bill Torrey,
- 2:17the General Manager of the New York Islanders. Bill will be back when we return in a moment.
- 2:24Now here's a word from the number one beer in New York. New York is full of landmarks,
- 2:46the Battery, Washington Square, Shea Stadium, and over on Kent Avenue in Brooklyn there's
- 2:50another landmark, the Schaeffer Brewery. Since 1842 there's always been a Schaeffer Brewery
- 2:56in New York because New York has always liked Schaeffer's way of tasting first beer good
- 3:02beer after beer, year after year. Schaeffer's a beer born and brewed right here in New York.
- 3:08It's New York's number one beer. The people of Eastern believe they're going to make your
- 3:27next Eastern flight a great flight. I think when you buy a ticket on Eastern you deserve
- 3:32a clean plane. When you have a good flight that's when we have a good flight. You've
- 3:39got to believe. We work hard, get out on time, so you get in on time. You've got to believe
- 3:42my crew will feed you with if you have a beautiful flight. You've got to believe. If you're flying
- 3:52to Atlanta, Eastern has 13 daily non-stops and from Atlanta you can connect to major
- 3:58cities in the south and southeast. Take one of Eastern's money saving night coaches to
- 4:02Atlanta and save about 20 percent off the regular day coach airfare. Most flights to
- 4:07Atlanta feature Eastern's comfortable 727 Whisper jets with spacious redesigned interiors.
- 4:12For reservations call the Travel Specialist, your travel agent, or call Eastern the wings
- 4:19of the world. This is Jim Garvey from Madison Square Garden and my guest tonight is the
- 4:29General Manager of the New York Islanders, Bill Turing. Bill, it's been a long season.
- 4:33We had you early, we had you in the middle, and here we are down at the end and it's a
- 4:37pleasure to welcome you again. Well Jim, I'm hoping quite frankly it isn't the end. It's
- 4:42towards the end, no question about that, but hopefully we'll be around for a while yet.
- 4:47Although we've got a big hurdle to climb tonight. Well you know Bill, when it's a one game winner
- 4:52take all series, I think that past records and past games sort of go out the window and
- 4:57put the chips for where they may. The hot club, the hot goldshead that comes out ahead
- 5:01and I think that most clubs have things going for them and things going against them and
- 5:05the way I see it, it could go either way. Well, I don't think there's any question that
- 5:10a one game series, anything can happen at any time and I think that's the way the players
- 5:15have to look at it. I think obviously a team with experience and who's been through this
- 5:21kind of thing before may have an edge, but by the sense of hoping sometimes young legs
- 5:25can give you an edge too, so it's going to be an interesting evening. Let's look at the
- 5:30series to date Bill, I think neither one of the games have really gone according to form.
- 5:34The Rangers took a two goal lead into the first game, into the third period and for
- 5:39all intents and purposes I think the Garden Crowd and maybe some of the Rangers hockey
- 5:42players felt that the game was bagged and then one, two, three, the Islanders came out
- 5:46with a win and I think that surprised a lot of people. Well again, I think that's a question
- 5:51that our young legs gave us a little bit of an edge there in the third period and again
- 5:58hopefully even tonight that's something to keep in mind. I think that certainly we did
- 6:05not play as we had hoped we would through the middle part of the game. We played a pretty
- 6:11good first period the other night here in the Garden and we killed off a little bit
- 6:15in the second period and then we came back pretty strong in the third period. So whether
- 6:21that's any indication of what will happen tonight, who knows. You know Billy, Rangers
- 6:25of the club seem to do very well in unsettled situations of man ups, man downs, two men
- 6:30ups, perhaps a little bit more explosive on the power play than we've been and yet you
- 6:35really don't want our club to go out and sit back, they've got to go out and hit so you're
- 6:38taking a calculated risk aren't you? I'd have to say when you get the officiating we got
- 6:44last night you certainly take a risk. I would hope under more normal circumstances that
- 6:50it's not really a risk. We are an aggressive team, a physical team, we like to play the
- 6:55man and we don't see why that's something that should be penalized. I don't know a lot
- 7:00of the other things there, it's another matter but I think that there's no question that
- 7:05there are Rangers when they're allowed to move the puck, pass the puck the way they
- 7:09are capable of doing it, when you let them do that you're asking for trouble, there's
- 7:13no two ways about it. Well I rode up in the elevator with Frank Gutvari and we had an animated
- 7:18discussion about the officiating last night, you know being an official myself and with
- 7:22Ross and having worked some pretty big ball games, you know you always try to be a little
- 7:25bit sensitive toward the plight of the official but as I told Frank last night, I think it
- 7:29was the first time this season that I'd really lost my cool a little bit on the air and was
- 7:33a little bit loud in my denunciation of Wicks. I felt he took the game away from the club
- 7:38early in the first period and what he did thereafter really wasn't essential because
- 7:42once he got out of that first period it was just about game time. But here we go in the
- 7:46game three tonight and there are questions below, who will be in goal for the Islanders
- 7:49and who will be in goal for the Rangers? You know walking up with Jill Villamuele last
- 7:53night after the game, he was in a great deal of pain and I had some doubts that Jill would
- 7:57be able to go and I guess for yourself really at this point in time, we're now about an
- 8:01hour and a half before game time and even you are not really sure I guess at this point
- 8:05who might be in goal. Well I'm going downstairs right after I get to talking with you to sit
- 8:10down with Al and discuss it. I think we've pretty well made up our minds but it's to
- 8:14make the final decision we decided we'd just let it go. The goalkeepers, we've talked to
- 8:18them, they know what the circumstances are and so we'll talk about it downstairs and
- 8:23come up with the right decision. I don't know what the Rangers are going to do as far as
- 8:27we're concerned, we don't really care. We've got to go out and play our game and do the
- 8:32things that we do best, better than they do in order to get ourselves the edge and last
- 8:37night is one of those things. I think actually in looking at our young team and obviously
- 8:42this is a big unknown factor in the Islanders, there was more pressure on our kids last night
- 8:49really than there was in the opening game here and then in the way there is tonight.
- 8:54They were very uptight all day yesterday and there wasn't anything we could really do.
- 8:59They got a bad game out of their system last night and hopefully we'll start it all clean
- 9:04tonight when the bell goes. I think the Islanders bill have gotten a great deal of mileage during
- 9:08this playoff out of the fourth line with Lauren Henning, Joel Podvan and Billy McNoin. Well
- 9:13I'll probably go with the four lines again tonight as the players have to be tired coming
- 9:17off that three hour slugfest last night. Well I think there's no question that the line
- 9:22has played well. It's a line we put together towards the tail end of the season to give
- 9:27ourselves a little bit of a rest because really we've been placed in a situation down through
- 9:33the last few weeks where all of our games were kind of playoff type games against key
- 9:38teams in high pressure situations and it allowed Al to have a little bit more flexibility when
- 9:45we're killing off the penalties. It allowed him to have an extra line there just in case
- 9:50of a foul and they have played very well. Joel Podvan particularly moving up from defense
- 9:55to right wing stepped in there and done an excellent job and got two goals here in the
- 9:59playoffs and both of them really good goals you might say. Bill, the new additions to
- 10:06the club, Jude Drone and JP Parisi, we've spoken of them before. They've made great
- 10:10contributions. I of course in reading today's paper had a laugh when I read how the Ratel
- 10:15Gilbert-Vickers line had outplayed the Drone line because as I remember most of the goals
- 10:21scored by that line came on the power play with Drone not even in the game. So I think
- 10:25sometimes the final statistics can be a little bit misleading but Jude Drone has certainly
- 10:29been an addition to the club that you couldn't minimize his value could you? No there's no
- 10:34question about it. They fit very well. It's always the key part when you make a trade
- 10:39to know when you get a good player on the ice hopefully but you've got to relocate
- 10:44them and resituate them and both he and JP fit in well. They like Long Island and we're
- 10:50very pleased with them and we feel they want to make a contribution to this hockey club
- 10:53for some time. Yes I did. It was brought to my attention today the article in the paper
- 10:59and well that's one man's opinion and I don't think it's a question that that line
- 11:03has not played well. I just think it's a question that John Ratel has had an outstanding two
- 11:07games and he's going to be a tough man to stop tonight but we're going to have to do
- 11:11it that's all. Well he certainly is and Bill as we wind down perhaps maybe one series left
- 11:17to go maybe two let's hope but I think that at this time it might be the last opportunity
- 11:21for me to speak with you I think speaking for all Islander fans let me commend you of
- 11:27course you representing Roy Ball and Al Arbor and every hockey player on the club for putting
- 11:32together what I think is a more than representative hockey club. I think the thrills the enjoyment
- 11:36that the fans at the Coliseum have had this year are directly attributable to a lot of
- 11:40the things that you've done. I think it would have been easy for you to sit Pat and take
- 11:44a young club and bring it along slowly but I think you you really had the fans that interest
- 11:48the pot when you went out and got a couple of veteran players and I think you've done
- 11:51a masterful job of building a club that's going to be a club that's going to be around
- 11:56for a long time. Bill thanks for sitting in with us and the best of luck to you. Thanks
- 12:00Jimmy. Still a long spring. New York Islander Action is next. We'll be back in a moment.

- 21:07Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
- 21:24Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
- 21:39Needless to say, we've got a standing room only crowd, and the two teams have played seven times this season, making eight times this season, including two playoff games.
- 21:52The Rangers have won four, the Islanders three. There was one tie back here on October 30th, one to one.
- 21:59And now it's my pleasure to introduce Jim Garvey. Jim, what do you think?
- 22:03Well, Tom, it's a big game, certainly for both clubs. I left the building last night with Jill Villamur, who was just outstanding in the Ranger net, and Jill was hurting, so we'll have to see how he goes tonight.
- 22:13By the way, in the second period, the Chicago Blackcocks lead the Boston Bruins 3-0 at the Boston Garden.
- 22:19The draw into the Rangers' end. Ron Harris battling for the puck. The battle continues.
- 22:26And the puck is jammed against the board. So we're going to have a faceoff coming up to the right of Gilles Villamur.
- 22:35Nick Beverly, Dom, for the Rangers, has a tender ankle, which he was hit with a shot with earlier in the series, and Ron Harris appears to be teaming up with Brad Park right off the bat tonight.
- 22:46We'll give you those possibilities we were talking about.
- 22:50The puck is in the corner to the right of Villamur. Villamur out to center right, stopped by Lewis.
- 22:56Lewis to Druhan. Jude on the right wing to Westfall off his stick. It's in the corner to the left of Villamur.
- 23:02Wacked around the board by Steve Vickers. Battle for the puck. Centering pass, nobody there.
- 23:09And it is taken for the Rangers by Vickers. He's out, left wing, center right. On the right wing, his pass is off the mark.
- 23:17Westfall collects, trying to bring it back. Flags it out to center right. Puck taken by Ron Harris, process it goes to Vickers, right back to Brad Park.
- 23:25To Gilbert, down the middle, knocked off his stick by Lewis, collected by Parisi. Parisi runs it to Harris, and the puck goes into the Ranger end.
- 23:34Brad Park has the puck. Out to his own line to Jean Rattelle. Rattelle for Gilbert ahead of him. Race for the puck.
- 23:41Lewis, Gilbert, Lewis has it. Lewis trying to bring it out. Moves it around the board, and the puck is stolen.
- 23:48It goes in the slot, knocked away by Marshall. Kept in by Gilbert. Lewis goes to his right to Marshall.
- 23:55Marshall coming out, right wing. On the left it goes to Lewis. Lewis lifts it in the corner to the left of Villamur.
- 24:02The Islanders change in the fly. At 18-20 to go here in the first period, nothing, nothing.
- 24:08Kachouk to center right, so the puck is fired in the Islanders end by Fairburn.
- 24:13Lewis to center right. Sanderson after it. Knocked away by Denny Puckman to Bobby Bourne. Bourne knocked down by Marat.
- 24:23And back comes Kachouk, and Bourne goes after him. Sanderson sends it in the Islanders end. Billy Smith knocks it away.
- 24:31Dennis Puckman off the board to Bourne. Bourne center right. He can fly. Drop pass. Gilly shoots, deflected wide.
- 24:40And the battle for the rebound. On the puck now for the Rangers is Greschner. Greschner trying to come out.
- 24:47Gilles goes after him, ties him up, gets the puck to center right. Or Kachouk.
- 24:52Collected in one motion by Fairburn down the middle, right wing. Bourne intercepts and gets it out to center right.
- 24:58Gilly to the Rangers line. Knocked away by Marat. Marat on the puck for the Rangers. Fires it in the corner to the left of Billy Smith.
- 25:07Billy Smith stops it, leasing him back. The puck is collected by Jerry Hart. Hart has it up on the right wing. It goes to Billy Harris.
- 25:13He's out, center right. Billy center right, so the left wing knocked away. Back on the left wing. It's outside.
- 25:20And Marat hits Harris and knocks him right under the Ranger bench. And that's going to start something.
- 25:28There's a break in the action. Nothing, nothing. We'll be back in a moment.
- 25:32You must have a comment on whether or not you think the Yanks will win the pennant.
- 25:36Well that's what WMCA is all about. And that's what my program is all about.
- 25:41Hello, I'm John Sterling. And I talk sports every weekday evening from 7 to 10. And all Saturday afternoon as well.
- 25:48And I want to talk to you.
- 25:50Hey, what do you say? WMCA. WMCA. We're for you.
- 26:03Alright, the draw outside the Ranger line. On the draw, battle for. Goes to Harris. Harris to his left to park.
- 26:14Park right back to Harris. Harris coming out to Stemkowski up on the right wing. Knocked away by Howitt.
- 26:22To Brad Park at his own line. Park off the skate of Urban. He goes down. Harris has it to Park.
- 26:29Park right back to Stemkowski down the middle. The shot off the stick of Lewis.
- 26:34And Marshall sends it around the boards to Howitt. Gary coming out. Left wing.
- 26:39Does St. Laurent do Nystrom? Nystrom fakes the shot. Back down the middle looking for St. Laurent.
- 26:44Knocked into the corner. A battle for the puck. Nystrom going after it.
- 26:49Sticks flying. Everybody digging for the puck. Taken by Marshall. Down the middle to St. Laurent.
- 26:54He can't get the shot off. St. Laurent and Butler going at it. And Gary Howitt knocks Park down.
- 27:01The puck is taken by Harris. Harris with it. Shoots at the Islanders end. It's Carom's in front.
- 27:07Urban shoots. Great save by Billy Smith. What a save by Smith.
- 27:13The quick left handed glove came up with a save. Face off to the right of Billy Smith and the Islanders end.
- 27:19Well the first tester of the night that goes to Billy Smith and the Islanders. Billy standing his ground as Urban walked right in alone.
- 27:26And Billy pucked that one out of the air. A great left hand grab.
- 27:29And Tom I know Islander fans breathe a sigh of relief because the first goal is oh so important and Urban looked like he was in cold.
- 27:36Incidentally Phil Rizzuto here tonight with us. Former Yankee great who enjoys hockey very much.
- 27:44He'll be on with Jim. Wins second and third period. Greschner from deep out front. The shot is knocked away by Smith.
- 27:50The puck is loose. Trying to go back to the right point was Gilbert and it goes all the way to the Rangers line.
- 27:56Marat with it. Up to Rattel ahead of him. Rattel had a goal and three assists last night.
- 28:02So did Vickers. They were the big scorers. They played very well.
- 28:07Jerry Hart with a puck to Drew on up on the right wing. Denny Pott man right back to Jude.
- 28:12Jude coming across the line. Knocked off his stick. Battle for the puck.
- 28:17Parisi's got it. JP hit it to the corner. Drew on it. Jude left point. Hart shooting. It's blocked.
- 28:25And the puck is taken by Rattel. He wheels along the right wing board. Goes cross ice to his left.
- 28:31Taken right there by Marat. Marat to Joe Bear. Joe Bear down the middle. Down the middle to Rattel.
- 28:37The shot. Great save by Billy Smith. What a save. Parisi to Drew on. Drew on coming down the middle.
- 28:45Jude right wing. West ball shoot. Save Villamur. And the puck is taken by Vickers.
- 28:51Dave Vickers loses out front. The shot. The save by Villamur in a beauty. Drew on with a great shot.
- 28:57And a great save by Villamur. Both co-tenders have done well so far tonight.
- 29:02Islanders changing the fly. To center ice to Bourne. Bourne trying to come across the line. Right wing.
- 29:08He does. Loses to Vickers. It's in the slot. Loose. Puck deflects to center ice.
- 29:14Taken right there by Rattel. Down the middle. Drop pass Vickers. Goes to the right wing. Loses the puck.
- 29:21Heart cracked into him. Centering pass knocked away. Kept in by part. The shot wide. Gillies out to the puck.
- 29:28Cleans it out to center ice. 14-25 to go. In the first period. Nothing, nothing.
- 29:35Kachuk down the middle. Goes to the right wing. And Jerry Hart rides him out of the board.
- 29:39Hart goes after him. Kachuk out front. Couldn't get the shot out. Sanderson shoots. Blocked by Hart.
- 29:45And Dennis Plotkman clears it. It goes up all length of the ice. It no doubt will be icing.
- 29:52It is. There's a break in the action. Nothing, nothing. We'll be back in a moment.
- 29:56Have you noticed how many banks now charge 15 cents per check with their special checking at town?
- 30:01Say buddy, keep it down will ya? It's inflation. I asked you to keep it down.
- 30:04That's why European American Bank introduces noflation checking. Are you gonna keep it down or not?
- 30:08That's what I'm trying to tell ya. Noflation means the per check charge at European American is still just 10 cents.
- 30:14There's no minimum balance and the service charge is still just 75 cents per month.
- 30:18Check's still just 10 cents at European American? Yeah. You did keep it down.
- 30:22European American Bank. Member FDIC. We've made a commitment to bring you better banking.
- 30:27All set now. A few possibilities now. Boston wins and Los Angeles wins.
- 30:36The Islanders or the Rangers play Buffalo. Chicago wins and Los Angeles wins.
- 30:41And one of the New York teams plays Montreal. Boston wins and Toronto wins.
- 30:46And a New York team plays Montreal. Chicago wins and Toronto wins. It's a New York team at Pittsburgh.
- 30:52On the draw. Taken by Kachuk down the middle for Fairburn. Knocks away.
- 30:57And the puck is taken by Gillies where the good movie comes out.
- 31:00Center right. Clark stops. The shot. Why? Caram and Villamur knocks it into the corner to his right.
- 31:06Ron Harris has it. Harris coming out of the right wing. Harris bringing it out.
- 31:11The center right then goes to Kachuk. Back to Harris. Harris shoots.
- 31:15Great save by Billy Smith. Man, what a save Billy Smith has made tonight, Jim.
- 31:21Well, Don, we have not yet really had a great goaltending game here with both goaltenders and Sparkles.
- 31:27And I think this may be the game. Both Gillie Villamur and the Nets for the Rangers and Billy Smith and Nets for the Islanders
- 31:33have really come up big here in the first period. Gloved hand grabs by both goaltenders. Smith in particular has really sparkled.
- 31:41A freewheeling game up in Boston after two Chicago League 5-3.
- 31:48On the draw. Lewis around the board. Seborn trying to get it out. Bob having trouble.
- 31:53Puck is loose. Back to the right point. Harris can't keep it in. Gillies. Harris.
- 31:59And Harris is able to move Gillies out of the way. The puck is taken by Park. Park fighting with Burt Marshall.
- 32:07Marshall sends it to the Rangers then. Villamur now stops the puck. Harris has it. Ron Harris for the Rangers. Leaves it for Kachuk.
- 32:15He lost it as Howard goes after him. Now Harris has it. The center right. Burt Marshall takes it.
- 32:21On the right wing knocked down by Don LaRonde. Puck is still loose. Taken by Walt Kachuk. Up on the right wing.
- 32:29Good check on Fairburn. And the puck is sent into the Islanders then. Stopped there by Marshall to Don LaRonde.
- 32:38Back tender. And the puck is in the corner of the right of Villamur and we're going to have a face out of that point. It's jammed.
- 32:47Well Gary Howitt and Pete Sinkowski start to do a little pushing and shoving. This game really hasn't resembled last night's game at all.
- 32:54It's been end to end action. It's been good hockey and the officials are in quickly to separate them.
- 32:58And Andres Salarón showed us a nice move there as he peeked a little bit, put the puck over on the backhand and hit the outside of the bar.
- 33:05But it was a good move by Andres. Gill Villamur played the angle well and with 12.33 to go in the first period, Dom, we still have no score.
- 33:14Ready to go now. The draw to the right of Villamur. And Salarón leaves. It'll be nice room on the draw.
- 33:23Greshner's got it. Greshner with a puck goes cross-ice to his left. To Marat to Sinkowski center-right.
- 33:30On the right wing for Fairburn. The back pass is loose. Taken by Urban. Urban ridden into the board.
- 33:37And a penalty coming up now. Should be on Urban. Let's get the call. Let's see who it's called on because Urban went after Howitz.
- 33:48And it's going to be on him. And Bruce Hood was standing right there, makes the call. And the official time is 7.46 of the first period.
- 34:00Cat Urban goes out now for two minutes. For roughing. Well after last night, you know, you hold your breath a little bit when that hand goes up.
- 34:09But as Dom called it, Urban was roughing Gary Howitz and Howitz holding his composure really didn't retaliate there.
- 34:17So Urban gets the two minutes and the Islanders get the first power play opportunity of the hockey game.
- 34:22You have to hold your breath with Gary. Gary hasn't held back very many times this year but Tom with the big money on the line tonight with everything riding on this game, everybody will be on their best behavior.
- 34:33Well it's going to, I hope it's a real good game. And the best team will end up winning.
- 34:38Sondler on across the line, left wing, the shot, glove by Villamur. Villamur sends it to the corner to the right.
- 34:44Ron Harris after it, digging in there, Sondler on left point, Jenny Potvan shoots, deflection attempt goes wide. Butler has it, trying to get it out.
- 34:52Dennis again, shooting, dark ride, it's skipped wider than that. And the puck is battled for. Sean Potvan, the nice room.
- 35:00And Villamur moves it in the corner. Howitz got it. Gary trying to center it. He does but Clark is there, lost it in the slot, cleared.
- 35:10Could be a breakaway, Smith out of the net, knocks it away from Butler. No goal tender. The shot, Dennis Potvan gets back and blocks it.
- 35:20Dennis up on the left wing, Sondler on, Andre across the line, left wing, quick shot wide, Caram, nice room on the right wing with it.
- 35:29Back to the right point, Sean Potvan shoots it, goes up over the net. The Islander is now pressing and Ron Harris cleared.
- 35:36And the puck goes into the Islander's end. We're under 50 seconds to go on the pedaling out of urban. 45 seconds, Islander starts back on the power play.
- 35:46John Potvan to Jude Ruins, Jude with the puck, to John Potvan, shoots it in the Rangers end. It's in back of the net. Villamur leaves it right there.
- 35:55Greshner fires it around the boards. Westfall keeps it in. Greshner again has it, sends it around the boards.
- 36:01And it is cleared out to center right, racing for it, Dennis Potvan and Fairburn. Dennis with a great move and comes right back.
- 36:10Great move by Dennis, down the middle, right wing, goes, drawing the shot, up over the net. Trying to keep it in, Parisi, JP does.
- 36:19JP left point, Dennis, thick back, the shot, blocks, the shot, blocks again. Parisi's got it. Parisi on that right wing, again to Dennis, again the shot.
- 36:30It's blocked. Greshner's got it. Both teams are so strength. Three on two, Greshner and a lot of time in the Rangers.
- 36:38There's a break to the action. Nothing, nothing, we'll be back in a moment.
- 36:43Ever wonder what makes Schaeffer the one beer to have when you're having more than one? One reason is more than one fermentation.
- 36:50Most brewers just ferment their beer once, but Schaeffer is fermented twice. Once to make it beer and twice to make it Schaeffer.
- 36:58The one beer with flavor so fine, it keeps shining through, glass after frosty glass. More than one fermentation is one reason.
- 37:06But of course there's more than one reason behind the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 37:15The Islanders and the Rangers, nothing, nothing here at Madison Square Garden. And on the Seventh Avenue side, we've got Villamur.
- 37:24And on the Eighth Avenue side is Billy Smith. Islanders moving from left to right. On the puck now,
- 37:30Don LaRont across the line right wing. Andre loses to Rattel. The puck is loose. On it now is Lewis.
- 37:37Lewis right back to Howard. Gary to Nystrom trying to get the shot out of he can't. And Park has the puck for the Rangers.
- 37:44Park coming back. And he's tied up by Nystrom. Good play. Lewis to Don LaRont. He tips it to the Rangers line.
- 37:52And we got an offside pass. We're going to have a faceoff between the left faceoff circle and the Islanders line.
- 37:58Nothing, nothing. 9.45 to go first period.
- 38:00Well it's evident that Al Arbor and Bill Torrey got together with the New York Islanders and told them they're going to play positional hockey tonight.
- 38:06No more running around wildly. The Islanders are back to playing their game. And when the Islanders are on their game,
- 38:11it makes for a better night for your goaltender. He's protected more. The Islander defensemen, the forwards are forechecking and back checking.
- 38:19The Islanders are out to play their game tonight. The puck is at center right. Taken right there by Rod Gilbear.
- 38:26Gilbear with it. Gilbear has the puck. Tends it in the Islanders and Lewis after it dies.
- 38:32And back into that, Ritell comes in after him to Druin. Jude with the puck across the mouth of the goal to Marshall.
- 38:39Burt now wheels around. The Rangers forechecking. Cross-ized Lewis.
- 38:44Lewis with a good move but Druin is behind him. West ball trying to center the Rangers in.
- 38:49Stolen by Vickers down the middle to Ritell. Knocked away by Lewis. And Druin had the puck, lost it.
- 38:56Druin's pass intercepted Vickers. The shot and it is glove drop smothered by Billy Smith.
- 39:02Face-off coming up on a very, very risky play as an errant pass went right on the stick of Vickers.
- 39:11Face-off to the right of Billy Smith. Well the Islanders have been clearing the puck by trying to hit a center, breaking down the middle.
- 39:16In that case, Jude Druin took a blind pass and attempted to flip it up the middle and there was nobody there but a Ranger in a white jersey.
- 39:23And almost a giveaway there deep in your own zone. It could have been disastrous but Billy Smith was up to it and smothered the rebound.
- 39:31Ready now for the draw.
- 39:35Centering pass is taken by Gillies one-on-one with Greshner.
- 39:39Gillies coming in. The shot knocked down, puck loose and it is cleared away by Kachuk.
- 39:45Kachuk to center right to Fairburn. Here comes, follows along. The shot is fair to the beauty.
- 39:50Billy Smith with another great save. The Rangers with another breakaway.
- 39:54And Barat from the red line shoots it to the corner. The left of Billy Smith is offside.
- 39:59And we've got a face-off coming up and again Billy Smith came way up.
- 40:04When Billy's coming way up, standing up, cutting the angle down, he's unbeatable, Jim.
- 40:09Well, the Rangers are making use of the long pass and they're head manning that puck and they're setting up two-on-ones and three-on-twos.
- 40:15The Rangers have been trying to beat Billy with longer shots. Now I look for them to kind of come in, try to deke him and skate around him because Billy is coming out.
- 40:22He's cutting down the angle. He's doing what he has to do. But you can't keep giving them these long passes because pretty soon they're going to hurt you.
- 40:29All set now for the draw. Billy Harris and Walt Kachuk. It goes to the Islanders line. Jerry Hart on it.
- 40:38His pass for Bourne is intercepted by Polis to Gresher down the middle. The shot caught in the midsection by Billy Smith.
- 40:45And again we've got a face-off coming up to the left of Billy Smith and the New York Islanders end.
- 40:51Nothing, nothing. 8.24 to go. First period.
- 40:55Tom, when you think about pressure and we know there's pressure on both clubs, you wonder whether it's the young club having the pressure on them or the veteran club, whom everybody expects to do well here tonight.
- 41:04I'd say there's pressure on both.
- 41:07Fairburn shoots, knocked down in front by Dennis Potman. Dennis has the puck, wheels one way then another, sets up in back of the net, goes to his left to Jerry Hart.
- 41:17Jerry up on the left wing for Gillies, off the mark, taken by Gresher who shoots it back at the Islanders end.
- 41:23Dennis Potman with the puck in back of the net. Hart right back to Dennis. Dennis now starts out. Up on the left wing for Gillies, off the mark.
- 41:32Gresher with the puck, knocked off his stick and Kachuk sends the back pass to Gresher.
- 41:38The center-right on the left wing, Polis, down the middle. The shot, six-day by Dennis Potman.
- 41:46And we've got a penalty coming up for interference. And it'll be on the Islanders.
- 41:54There's a break in the action. Nothing, nothing. We'll be back in a moment.
- 41:58I can't begin without you because without you I don't have a show. Call me Monday through Saturday beginning at 12.15 at 489-1155.
- 42:18Get a point you MPA. You don't know.
- 42:3012-17, the official time on the interference call to Clark Gillies.
- 42:36Rangers now with a power play. Billy Smith makes the save off the face-off.
- 42:40Lewis having trouble with it and he gets it back to Park who tries to get the shot off.
- 42:45Park keeps it in. He's at the left point.
- 42:48Lauren Hanning after him. Park with a good move now. Out front, Joe Baer shooting wide.
- 42:54Park at the left point shoots, knocked down, loose. Lewis after it. Battle for, sends it back to the right point.
- 43:02Joe Baer with it out front. Blocked by Lewis to Westfall.
- 43:05Eddie on the left wing to Lauren Hanning and Joe Baer gets it back.
- 43:11Joe Baer leads it for Park who sets up for the Rangers.
- 43:15In his own end, on the right wing it goes to Joe Baer right back to Middleton and Lewis holds him up to Ratel.
- 43:21Vickers, wide play by Billy Smith. Vickers was in along and Billy Smith made a beautiful save, broke his stick in half and gets back up.
- 43:33Well Billy Smith made a tremendous play there Don. He felt for the post as the goaltender will do and in feeling for the post he broke his goal stick.
- 43:40With the stick laying on the ice and Vickers in again on the breakaway using nothing but his pads in his hands he managed to hold Vickers off.
- 43:48So Billy certainly had a first period to remember.
- 43:52Just great goal sending tonight.
- 43:55Betty has been tested much much more than Gilles Villamur but when he's been tested he's done the job.
- 44:01And Billy Smith not only stops this one, clears it all the way to the Rangers end.
- 44:05On the puck now is Joe Baer. We've got a minute to go on the penalty.
- 44:10Joe Baer bringing it out, right wing to Ratel who can fly.
- 44:13On the right wing Middleton. Middleton centering pass. Lewis knocks it away.
- 44:18Joe Baer keeping it in. Stopped by Henning and he clears.
- 44:21And we're down to 45 seconds on the penalty.
- 44:24The Clark Gillies who's out at 12.37 for interference.
- 44:28Park that is on line to Ratel.
- 44:31Ratel knocked off his stick. Vickers has it offside of the Rangers.
- 44:35And we have 34 seconds to go on the penalty to Clark Gillies.
- 44:39Nothing nothing. 6.17 to go first period.
- 44:42Well the Islanders are keeping the Rangers from setting up in their own zone.
- 44:45And when the Rangers set up in your zone they're dangerous.
- 44:48Steve Vickers of course perhaps the most dangerous marksman parking himself on the left corner.
- 44:52Ricky Middleton playing over there on the right wing. Also dangerous.
- 44:56Hamil Lacat has put Rod Joe Baer out on the point with Brad Fox. So there's a lot of firepower on this Ranger power play with Ratel at center.
- 45:03They have one of the best of the National Hockey League. Jerry Hart trying to get it out.
- 45:07It deflects. It's loose. Ratel's got it.
- 45:11To Middleton right out front knocked away by Smith.
- 45:14Eddie Westfall there. Eddie with it now. Left wing for Henning.
- 45:18It's under his stick. 15 seconds on the penalty.
- 45:22On the puck now Joe Baer in his own end.
- 45:24Rod Joe Baer coming out. On the left wing it goes to Park.
- 45:27We're under 8 seconds to go. Park coming down the middle.
- 45:31Park down the middle. Did Joe Baer. Knocked off his stick.
- 45:35Dennis Pottman with it. Time up on the penalty. Both teams are at full strength.
- 45:39And the puck is called for stoppage and play in the corner of the right of Billy Smith.
- 45:44Let's pause 15 seconds for station notification.
- 45:47The score is nothing nothing. This is the New York Islanders Hockey.
- 45:50This is WMCA New York. Hi I'm John Sterling.
- 45:57Evening time means sports time on WMCA. I'll be here Monday through Friday from 7 till 10.
- 46:07Ready for the draw to the right of Billy Smith. Back to the left point kept in by Marat.
- 46:12And back of the net. The puck. And back of Dennis Pottman. He didn't see it.
- 46:16He's not even trying to get at it. He can't. It's frozen against the board.
- 46:20And we'll have another face off at the same spot.
- 46:22Five and a half minutes to go. First period. Nothing nothing.
- 46:24Well, Jill Marat has certainly been one of the ranger hot hitters here in the series.
- 46:28He put Billy Harris over on the players bench earlier.
- 46:31And they threw her off in the crowd. But it was a hard clean check by Jill Marat.
- 46:35Who's built like a fire plug and hits like a truck.
- 46:38The draw right to Billy Smith. Stopped it. Dennis Pottman around the board.
- 46:42Rolls it in. The shot from the right wing by Butler is wide around the board.
- 46:47Nystrom's got it. Bob back. Quick shot. Score! No! It hit the post and came out!
- 46:53I don't believe it. It went in and out.
- 46:58Everybody's wondering what happened. It hit the bar and came right back out.
- 47:02It looked like it was in. Tough break. Urban back. Left wing. The shot wide.
- 47:09Caram around the board. Taken by Nystrom. Trying to get it out. He does. Center right.
- 47:14Stemkowski goes down. Incredible how that didn't go in.
- 47:19Marat down the middle he goes. But Butler knocked away.
- 47:23On the puck now is McMillan. McMillan fights with Greshner. Knocks him down.
- 47:28Jerry Hart's got the puck. Hart to Nystrom right of the red line.
- 47:32Nystrom quick drilling shot knocked down by Villamur. He lays it for Sanderson.
- 47:38Sanderson around the board for Fairburn. Fairburn coming back and Sileron rides him off.
- 47:44Back comes Lewis. Lost the puck as he swung and missed. Taken by Marat.
- 47:49Marat to Fairburn. The shot. Gillies gets it out to center right.
- 47:53Fairburn has nine lifetime goals against the Islanders. The best for the Rangers.
- 47:58Lewis sends the puck in back of the net. Taken by Burt Marshall to Bourne.
- 48:03Bourne coming out. Bourne center right on the left wing. Gillies shoots. Goal!
- 48:09And it's one to nothing Islanders. The official time 16 minutes of the first period.
- 48:16And there was no fixing on that one Jim. Well the Islanders had a mixed line out there.
- 48:20Bobby Nystrom on the right wing never got off. Bobby Bourne the Islanders fastest skater.
- 48:25Sped to center. Came in over the line. Has the two defensemen.
- 48:28Park and Harris converged on Bourne. Bourne just simply slid it over on the left wing.
- 48:33Clark Gillies banged it home. That coming right on the heels of a shot by Nystrom and hit the post.
- 48:39Certainly the Islanders had reason there to fret and no they came right back and scored.
- 48:43And the first goal of the game goes to the Islanders with four minutes to play in the period.
- 48:48Ready now for the draw. After the goal. Goes to Burt Marshall. Goes to his left the laws.
- 48:55Back to Marshall. Marshall at center right. Shoots in the corner to the left of Villamur.
- 49:00It rolls in the corner to the right of Villamur. Both Bourne and Marshall get a fifth of the goal by Gillies.
- 49:06Sanderson center right. Sanderson a shot. A save by Billy Smith. Billy moves it in back.
- 49:11Lewis is there. Start of the right. Goes back to the left. His pass. Off the stick of Gillies to center right.
- 49:17Ron Harris has it. Billy Harris that to him. To the Islanders line. Knocked away by Lewis.
- 49:24Brad Park is on it in his own zone. Goes cross-eyed to Ron Harris. To Kachuk. Knocked away.
- 49:34Back on it is Ron Harris. On the left wing for Sanderson. Back to Kachuk. The drop pass. Fairburn.
- 49:41The park. The shot. Bounces off of Burt Marshall. And Billy Harris has it. And clears it.
- 49:48The full length of the ice. It goes in the corner to the right of Villamur. And it'll be icing.
- 49:531-0. The Islanders are out front on the second playoff goal of the season for Clark Gillies.
- 49:59From Bob Bourne. Burt Marshall. 16 minutes the official time of the goal.
- 50:03Well Islanders in both games have scored by splitting the defense. I think the Rangers were very conscious of that.
- 50:08As Bobby Bourne sped to center. Both Harris and Park closed on him. And that left Clark Gillies a lot of room on the wing.
- 50:14Penn Gillies drilled it home. It's the ability to use that good speed that Bobby Bourne has that forces the defenseman to close.
- 50:21And opens up your wing. And I tell you Jim as you and I have talked when he really learns how to harness that speed.
- 50:27He's going to be something else. Well I think Bobby will have a good summer weightlifting program.
- 50:31Get himself strengthened up and be a real fine prospect next year. He's 6'3". Close around 200.
- 50:37And of course he can be a lot heavier as Jim said. And that's what the Islanders plan to do with him.
- 50:43Ready now for the draw to the right of Billy Smith. Rittal. And Eddie Westphal.
- 50:49A couple of old pros that have been at it for a while.
- 50:54The draw. Battle for. And cleared out to center ice and keeps rolling into the Rangers end.
- 51:03Reshner there. It's icing once again. And with 2.48 to go here in the first period. The Islanders are out front 1-0.
- 51:10Eddie Westphal did not mean to ice that puck. Trying to use an angle to slide the puck down in the Rangers zone.
- 51:16And he caught a good live board. The board actually catapulted that puck over the line.
- 51:21Rittal has been dynamite on face-offs in the series. Dominey wins another.
- 51:26Pickers with a puck. Right out front. Gilberto. Blocked by Hart. And back comes Drawan.
- 51:333 on 2. Jude. Down the middle. Jude for Westphal and Karam's off of a rock behind him.
- 51:40Point. Sends it in the corner. Parisi. To Jenny Plotman. The shot wide. The Karam is loose.
- 51:46Eddie Westphal out front. Unable to get the shot off. Was drawing in the slot. He was held up by Greschner.
- 51:53And the puck is at center ice. Rittal across the line. Down the middle. Rittal shooting.
- 51:58Beautiful save by Billy Smith. Who's on his knees going to his right as it was juggling in his glove.
- 52:04Face-off to the right of Billy Smith at the Islanders end.
- 52:08The Madison Square Garden building, Dom, doesn't like some arenas around the NHL keep a running tabulation on shots taken.
- 52:14But I can assure everybody out there that Billy Smith has been well tested in the first period.
- 52:18And he stood up to everything the Rangers have thrown at him. They've had breakaways. They've had close-in drives.
- 52:23And they've had deflections. And Billy's been tough.
- 52:26On the draw. Don LaRonde moves it to the corner.
- 52:30Bird Marshall to Lewis. Right back to Bird. Bird has the puck now. Cuts in front of his own net. Up to Nystrom.
- 52:38Nystrom gets it out to center ice. Taken by Don LaRonde. Andre right wing. The shot wide.
- 52:44Or he would have had a goal because Villamur lost it. Lewis. Lose it to Villamur. Taken by Ron Harris.
- 52:51And Howard goes out to him. And the puck is brought back out by Urban.
- 52:56He shoots wide. After the puck is Nystrom. Battle for Urban in there.
- 53:02Stamkowski after it. Lewis has it. Lewis with the puck. Sends it around the board to Henning.
- 53:07Lawrence getting it out. Up on the left wing to Howard. Howard on the right wing. Nystrom. Nystrom has the puck.
- 53:14Across the line. Left wing. Sends it to the corner. Harris went after him. He moves him out of the way.
- 53:19Brad Park trying to get it out. Howard after him. It's in the corner to let the Villamur.
- 53:24The Islanders now picking up some of the pressure. To center right for Urban. Urban after the puck.
- 53:30And it's for Stamkowski. The shot partially blocked. Ricker changes center right.
- 53:36On a crazy bounce. And.
- 53:40Lauren Henning lost his helmet. Lauren has the puck. Center right. Lauren down the middle. Left wing.
- 53:45Howard shoots. And it is blocked by Ron Harris up into the crowd.
- 53:49And with 49 seconds to play here in the first period the Islanders lead 1-0.
- 53:54Making his first appearance for the Rangers during that last shift was Jerry Butler. Jerry played a fine game last night.
- 54:00Did a lot of hitting. Got a big goal and a break away. Jerry was not getting too much ice.
- 54:05But Jerry was teamed with Peter Stamkowski and got on ice for the first time with 49 seconds to go in the first period.
- 54:12The face off to the right of Villamur. The Rangers end.
- 54:17The puck just about moving. Hart coming in to try to keep it in the zone he does.
- 54:22After it now is Born. And Cachute go at it. And Bob in there kicking at it.
- 54:28And we're going to have a face off and it will be outside because Bobby Born tried to freeze it. Which he did.
- 54:33So the call was a good one. Face off outside the Rangers line. Neutral zone center right.
- 54:3936 seconds to play first period 1-0 Islanders.
- 54:42It's happened to him now two or three times in this series. He's been freezing the puck when he really should be trying to play the puck.
- 54:47That's where inexperience comes in.
- 54:50On the draw. It goes to Greshner to Marat. Marat brings it out. 30 seconds to go on the period.
- 54:57Hard drive and knocked down by Billy Smith. Leaves it for Jerry Hart. Jerry Hart with the puck.
- 55:03Hart now up on the left wing. Gillies trying to get it out. He does. Race for the puck. Villamur way out of the net.
- 55:10It's a good go for Marat. And he fires it around the board. Billy Harris stops it. To Denny Plotman. Dennis keeps it in.
- 55:17On the puck Harris for Gillies knocked away by Greshner. Up on the right wing. And it's a center right and that's going to do it.
- 55:25And that's the end of the first period. And at the end of the first period the New York Islanders lead one another.
- 55:31Have you heard about the unbelievable new car for 1975? It's the Pacer from AMC.
- 55:36Hi this is Don Valentino and when I say unbelievable here's what I mean.
- 55:40Imagine a car that's wider than a Chevelle, smaller than a Vega, has more interior room, then cars a lot larger,
- 55:47looks a little like a second cousin to a Porsche and has features that make it the most unusual car on the road today.
- 55:53Now you're just beginning to find out about the Pacer. And when you go to Manhattan American,
- 55:57they'll show you how you can get a deal on this great car from AMC.

- 56:07Go on in and see the Pacer. Test drive the Pacer and talk to Manhattan American about dollars.
- 56:12If it's something extra you want on the way of a car, it's the Pacer.
- 56:15For something extra in the way you'll save money and be treated, it's Manhattan American Motors.

- 57:25At the end of the first period, the New York Islanders are out front one-on-nothing on Clark Gilly's second playoff goal
- 57:32from Bob Bourne and Burt Marshall at 16 minutes.
- 57:35The Rangers outshot the Islanders 15 to 8 in the first period.
- 57:40Gilly Smith was just simply sensational, and it looks like it's going to take sensational goals,
- 57:46here tonight, at both ends of the ice.
- 57:48The Islanders are out front one-to-nothing.
- 57:52Intermission highlights are next on New York Islanders Hockey.
- 57:55We'll be back in a moment.
- 57:56Now here's a word from America's oldest lager beer.
- 58:18Did you know that the Schaefer people are the oldest and most experienced lager brewers in America?
- 58:23It takes experience to brew any fine beer, but it's taken a little bit more experience to brew Schaefer,
- 58:29the one beer fine enough to give you a flavor that never fades.
- 58:33And if you'd like to experience the result of all that brewing experience,
- 58:37all you've got to do is give a couple of frosty cold Schaefer's a try.
- 58:43This is Jim Garvey, and my guest during the intermission tonight is Ms. Laura Stan.
- 59:03Laura is renowned for developing a new skating style known as power skating.
- 59:08We'll speak about power skating, Laura, and hockey.
- 59:11Laura, it's a pleasure to welcome you tonight.
- 59:13It's a pleasure to be here tonight, Jim.
- 59:15Laura, what is power skating?
- 59:17Well, power skating to me, although the word power skating connotes power and speed.
- 59:23It is power and speed, but it means a lot of things.
- 59:27It means all those things that make one a better skater on the ice and therefore a better hockey player.
- 59:33It means better balance, for one thing, better agility and maneuverability on the ice,
- 59:38better use of the edges of your skates, better stride, you know, a more efficient stride, better backward skating.
- 59:47In other words, it encompasses a great deal of different aspects of skating to go on to make you a better hockey player.
- 59:54Well, in case those of us in the audience have a feel that we've seen the name Laura Stan somewhere,
- 59:59we probably have because I've seen in print and I know I've spoken to a fellow on the islanders
- 1:00:05who has actually worked with you and in doing so I know has improved not only his skating,
- 1:00:11I don't know if you're a shooting instructor as well, but he's improved his shooting because he led the islanders in scoring.
- 1:00:15And you might want to talk about your friend Bobby Neistrom.
- 1:00:18Well, I saw Bob Neistrom the other night and I was really thrilled to watch him skate because the improvement that I've seen
- 1:00:26and the difference that it shows is incredible.
- 1:00:29Bob, when I first worked with him a couple of years ago, was very insecure, I think, in his own feeling about his skating.
- 1:00:36He knew that it was his weak point and he wanted so much to improve it.
- 1:00:40And I feel kind of proud. I think that he really has improved his skating.
- 1:00:44And I know that in the game of hockey when your skating improves, everything else improves also.
- 1:00:49So, no, I'm not a shooting instructor or anything, but I think that his better balance and everything else about his skating, etc.
- 1:00:56has helped his hockey in general.
- 1:00:58It certainly helped his confidence and I know Bob has been kidded a little bit by me about having a female coach,
- 1:01:05but I know it doesn't bother him.
- 1:01:07And I think personally that it's great.
- 1:01:09I think that any people out there who may have perhaps had the opportunity to get instruction
- 1:01:14and perhaps gone into a rink and seen a female instructor there and said,
- 1:01:17well, perhaps this isn't for me, that has stood up and taken notice.
- 1:01:20Because I know professional hockey never lets an opportunity go by when they see a fellow on the ice who needs a little skating
- 1:01:27and who's a person like yourself.
- 1:01:29I know in addition to Bob, you've worked with a fellow over in the World Hockey Association who had a great season.
- 1:01:34That's Gene Peacock.
- 1:01:36Yes, Gene is doing really well.
- 1:01:38I worked with the entire New York Golden Blades team when they were in New York before they went to San Diego.
- 1:01:43So I worked with quite everybody on the team and Gene was completely enthralled with it.
- 1:01:49He thought that it helped him so immensely.
- 1:01:52He really helped me a lot in getting me out to other hockey schools in Canada because he thought it was such a terrific program.
- 1:01:59Laura, have you done any writing?
- 1:02:01I know this is a topic that I think a lot of people, including myself as another skater, really are interested in.
- 1:02:07You had spoken to me briefly and I thought perhaps you were going to do a book on it.
- 1:02:11Yes, I'm in the process now of writing a book on how to skate the hockey way,
- 1:02:15which I'm hoping to get published sometime this fall.
- 1:02:19I have written articles for different magazines on the topic of power skating,
- 1:02:24on proper stride and better balance, better back with skating and that kind of thing.
- 1:02:30How important is the skate, the actual purchase of the skate, to the young person learning and developing his skating?
- 1:02:37You can't stress enough how important a good skate is.
- 1:02:41Not only the make of the skate, in that it's a solid construction, but in the fit of the skate.
- 1:02:47So many parents, in an attempt to economize and hope that their kids will grow into a skate in a year or two,
- 1:02:54will go out and buy something that's too big for the kid.
- 1:02:57This is the worst thing that somebody can do because then the ankles cave in and the feet hurt.
- 1:03:03All the problems with ankles really stem from the fact that the skate is either poor quality or poor fit.
- 1:03:10Laura, is there an age that's really the proper age for one to begin skating?
- 1:03:15And a person almost as soon as they walk, begin to skate.
- 1:03:18Well, I think a youngster, even as you say, beginning to walk can get on skate.
- 1:03:23Not that they're going to really learn how to skate at that age,
- 1:03:26but they can become familiar with the ice and learn to feel comfortable on the ice.
- 1:03:30But when a fellow or a girl too, when they're of the age of five and six,
- 1:03:35that's the time when their legs are beginning to develop to a point where they're getting strong enough to start to learn how to push on the ice.
- 1:03:42And if you start young in anything, you have a jump over everybody else.
- 1:03:47There's no question there. I'd like to strongly urge the parents out there,
- 1:03:51who may perhaps be thinking of something for the youngsters to do this summer that might be worthwhile,
- 1:03:56strongly consider that they look in their local newspapers and magazines,
- 1:04:01and when they see opportunities to engage Laura Stam and her power skating force,
- 1:04:06certainly avail themselves to it.
- 1:04:08I know that professional training, be it in golf, tennis, or ice skating, is certainly essential.
- 1:04:13I know that many young people pride themselves in having taught themselves.
- 1:04:17But having myself done it the hard way in golf, gotten a little instruction,
- 1:04:21I can attest to the fact that a little instruction and hard practice will really do a lot more good
- 1:04:27than just many, many hours of repeating the same errors over and over.
- 1:04:31Laura, do you agree?
- 1:04:32Oh, I definitely agree, because unless you're shown how to do it the right way,
- 1:04:36you don't know what your errors are, and so you're building in habits that may take years to break,
- 1:04:42and those may be the wrong habits.
- 1:04:44If you're lucky, like Bobby Orr, who of course is self-taught, I'm sure,
- 1:04:49then he just came out lucky. He came out knowing how to do it right.
- 1:04:54But most of us don't do it that way. We learn and we get our errors.
- 1:04:57So it's really important to be taught the right way.
- 1:05:00Well, out here in this hockey game tonight with the Rangers and the Islanders,
- 1:05:03there may be one in a million Bobby Orrs, but most of the guys out there have developed their skating styles
- 1:05:08through long, arduous practice sessions, and again, we want to thank you, Laura, for being with us
- 1:05:13and urge everyone to sharpen up your skating this summer, engage in power skating.
- 1:05:18New York Islander Action is next. We'll be back in a moment.
- 1:05:22During the week of February 17th, something happened in the gasoline business
- 1:05:27that everyone who drives a car should know about.
- 1:05:30A survey was taken of the prices of premium gasoline.
- 1:05:34The survey covered hundreds of service stations in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and other metropolitan areas.
- 1:05:41Almost all the major oil companies were included.
- 1:05:44If you buy gasoline by price in your neighborhood, you can probably guess the results.
- 1:05:50On an average, Getty premiums sold from two to two and a half cents less per gallon than most other major premiums.
- 1:05:59So if you want more gas for your money and more miles for your money, pull into Getty.
- 1:06:04Remember, don't waste gasoline. But when you do drive, fill up with Getty.
- 1:06:10No lead for cars built after 1971, premium for cars built before 1971.
- 1:06:16Getty. We've got what's best for your car and for you.
- 1:06:22Mail call. Oh, there's lots of mail today, honey. Your magazine, my magazine, your bank statement, my bank pack statement.
- 1:06:31Still only paying $2.50 a month at European American?
- 1:06:34No.
- 1:06:35I knew it.
- 1:06:36Now I pay only $1.50.
- 1:06:38That's less. Then you must be getting less.
- 1:06:40No. I still get unlimited checking, free personalized checks, a free safe deposit box, and lots more.
- 1:06:45Why, I even qualified for preferred loan rates.
- 1:06:48All that for just $1.50? That's less than I pay for checks alone.
- 1:06:51It's new. I just keep our thousand dollars in a European American savings account.
- 1:06:56Our savings earn the highest interest the law allows.
- 1:06:59And you get bank pack for just $1.50 a month?
- 1:07:01Uh-huh. And if we kept as little as $500 in a European American savings account,
- 1:07:05I'd pay just $2 a month for bank pack and still get interest on our savings.
- 1:07:10Bank pack for less than $2.50 a month. Hey, maybe I should switch.
- 1:07:14Okay. You cook tonight.
- 1:07:18European American, we've made a commitment to bring you better banking.
- 1:07:22Member FD...
- 1:07:23...no score.
- 1:07:27Our guest during the first intermission, Laura Stam,
- 1:07:31receives a gift certificate for dinner for two at Billy Paul Salty Dog Restaurant.
- 1:07:351166 Hempstead Turnpike across from the Coliseum.
- 1:07:38The Salty Dog specializes in steaks and seafood,
- 1:07:41and dining in their delightful upstairs aquarium dining room makes eating a unique pleasure.
- 1:07:46Well, it's an entirely different hockey game tonight.
- 1:07:49From the one we saw last night, the brawling, the fighting has not been repeated.
- 1:07:53In fact, in the first period, we had only two penalties called.
- 1:07:56Bruce Hood fingering Ted Urban for roughing at 746 and Clark Gillies for an appearance at 1217.
- 1:08:03Both the Islanders and the Rangers successfully killed off those penalties,
- 1:08:08and I guess the story in the first period will have to be Billy Smith and the New York Islanders in goal.
- 1:08:13Shots on goal in the first period for the New York Rangers, 15, and for the Islanders, 8.
- 1:08:18And many of those 15 shots that were taken on Billy Smith were close in drives,
- 1:08:23and in fact three or four came on breakaways, and Billy was up to all of them.
- 1:08:27Another key ingredient in tonight's 1-0 score here after one period
- 1:08:32has been the ability of the Islanders to control face-offs, especially in their own end.
- 1:08:36In the first two games of the series, the New York Rangers completely dominated this statistic,
- 1:08:41which often doesn't reach the fan, but people in the know in hockey games are always looking at face-offs,
- 1:08:46because when you control the puck, you're controlling the game.
- 1:08:50In the first period, there were 20 face-offs taken.
- 1:08:53The Rangers controlled 9 and the Islanders 11.
- 1:08:56If the Islanders can hold their own on face-offs, they stand a good chance in this hockey game.
- 1:09:01In another semifinal series, the big upset up in Boston taking place,
- 1:09:07with only three minutes to go in the third period, it's the Chicago Blackhawks 6 and the Boston Bruins 3.
- 1:09:13Now this upset, it should have come to pass, has some implications for Islander fans.
- 1:09:18If the Islanders were to hang on and win this hockey game tonight, and Toronto were to defeat LA,
- 1:09:23that would pitch the New York Islanders with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the next series.
- 1:09:28Of course, we have a lot of presumptions here, and we really don't want to get into it.
- 1:09:32But in a moment, we'd like to remind everybody that Bill Curry, our pregame guest,
- 1:09:37receives benefit too with the Ginger Man, located right across from the Lincoln Center in New York.
- 1:09:42It's 51st, 51 West 54th Street, right in the heart of the entertainment district.
- 1:09:48So the Ginger Man for Bill Curry and the Salty Dog for Laura Stam,
- 1:09:52and now the Rangers have come on ice.
- 1:09:54The Islanders have not yet made their appearance, and the score again, for those who might have tuned in late,
- 1:09:59after one period of play, it's the New York Islanders one and the New York Rangers no score.
- 1:10:04The Islander goal came at the 16 minute mark of the first period, and it was scored by Clark Gillies,
- 1:10:10his second goal of the playoffs, both scored here in Madison Square Garden.
- 1:10:14Bird Monster picked up an assist along with Bobby Bourne, Bobby the guy who made the play,
- 1:10:19picking up the puck at center, coming in over the line, throwing Brad Park and Ron Harris to him,
- 1:10:24sliding the puck to Gillies on his left, and Gillies beating Gilles Villamur.
- 1:10:28Just before the goal by Gillies, the Islanders had another good opportunity when Bobby Neistrom,
- 1:10:32steaming down the right board, let go and drive, which either caught Villamur a little bit by surprise,
- 1:10:38or Villamur perhaps was screened, because Gilles made no move at the puck,
- 1:10:42the puck got by him and hit the crossbar and bounced out.
- 1:10:45Actually it was on the insane rush that the Islanders picked up their goal.
- 1:10:49Although the Islanders, of leading in the hockey game, won nothing,
- 1:10:52the Rangers, as we said, had great chances on the net.
- 1:10:55Billy Smith had to come up big on numerous occasions.
- 1:10:58The Islanders are going to have to just tighten up, protect against the long pass,
- 1:11:01and continue to check and play their position.
- 1:11:04Down both teams are on ice.
- 1:11:06Jean Rattel, who has to be considered, I guess, the star of the playoffs so far,
- 1:11:10skates to center ice, along with Jude Drewin, and as Bruce Hood steps into the faceoff, back to you.
- 1:11:16Thank you very much Jim, and Jean Rattel was great last night, as was Steve Vickers.
- 1:11:22We're ready to go, second period.
- 1:11:25The draw taken by Gilbert, the back pass to park cross-ice Harris.
- 1:11:30Ron Harris moves it out to Rattel, intercepted by Drewin.
- 1:11:33Jude has it up ahead to Westfall, any left wing, Parisi, drop pass, Louis shoots,
- 1:11:39deflection attempt wide, backhander, up over the net by Parisi.
- 1:11:44And Bruce Hood ends up on the seat of his pants.
- 1:11:48Ron Harris is down on the corner to the left of Villamur, and now Villamur gets up.
- 1:11:54Well Dom, that looks like a Keystone comedy act, with Bruce Hood sailing over Ron Harris,
- 1:12:00and Jill Villamur getting up slowly, but I'm very concerned for the health of Jill Villamur.
- 1:12:05I walked up with him, as we said last night, out of Madison Square Garden,
- 1:12:08Jill and his wife, and Jill was having great difficulty just negotiating the stairs and the coliseum.
- 1:12:13I know Bruce Hood has been over to talk to him.
- 1:12:15I know he's playing in pain, and he's a good little guy, and he's playing a great hockey game.
- 1:12:19He's a tremendous goaltender.
- 1:12:21He showed it last night when it counted.
- 1:12:23Jill Bear with a puck, center right, on the right wing, and Rattel pushed away, taken by Louis.
- 1:12:30Louis coming back, and Rattel steals the puck.
- 1:12:34Drewin drives him on the board, and Louis has got it back to Parisi.
- 1:12:39Parisi center right, JP across the line, left wing, Westfall to Drewin.
- 1:12:44Jude collects right wing, the shot, blocked, taken by Park.
- 1:12:49The Vickers on the left wing behind Jill Bear, it's offside,
- 1:12:53face off in the neutral zone at center right, outside the Islanders line.
- 1:12:58One nothing Islanders.
- 1:12:59Well, the first minute of the second period showed a little more freewheeling action,
- 1:13:02with both sides opening up just a little bit.
- 1:13:05Amiel LeCat has told his Rangers in the locker room that unless you win today, there's no tomorrow,
- 1:13:10and the Rangers coming out putting on pressure.
- 1:13:12Walt Kachuk is now out to replace Rattel, and his combination is on for the Rangers.
- 1:13:17On the draw, taken by Jerry Hart, cross-eyed as it goes to Denny Pot, Van De Borne,
- 1:13:21knocks away Dennis back on it.
- 1:13:23Dennis gets it up to Harris, Billy Harris knocked down.
- 1:13:27The puck is loose.
- 1:13:28Sanderson trying to move it across the line, he does, and it is taken by Borne, Borne flying,
- 1:13:34across the line, left wing, Gillies shot wide.
- 1:13:37The puck was deflected just enough so that Gillies couldn't get the shot off.
- 1:13:41And the Rangers start back.
- 1:13:43Harris, cross-eyed for Sanderson, who gets it out to center-right.
- 1:13:47Hart after the puck, knocks it away from Fairburn, collected by Billy Harris.
- 1:13:51Billy moves it in across the line.
- 1:13:53He and Sanderson after the puck, and they bang Hart on the board,
- 1:13:58and the puck is taken for the Rangers by Greshner, knocked off his stick by Gillies.
- 1:14:04Harris after it, Billy Harris knocked down.
- 1:14:08We have a broken stick out of the ice.
- 1:14:10Down goes Greshner, Sandler-Rahn on top of him.
- 1:14:13Back come the Rangers, Kachuk with it.
- 1:14:16Walt Kachuk at center-right on the left wing, and a good check by Hart on Kachuk.
- 1:14:21And the puck is taken by Dennis Pot, Van De Borne, Andres, centering pass, deflected wide.
- 1:14:27Gillies after it.
- 1:14:29It's hit around the board, Fairburn trying to get it out, kept in by Jerry Hart.
- 1:14:33Greshner moves it to Fairburn, and again Jerry Hart moves him away.
- 1:14:37And the puck is at center-right, taken by Kachuk.
- 1:14:40Kachuk down the middle.
- 1:14:41Kachuk with a puck in the right wing, drop pass Anderson, the shot, pick up save by Billy Smith.
- 1:14:47Face-off coming to the left of Billy and the Islanders end.
- 1:14:50There's a break in the action.
- 1:14:51One nothing, Islanders.
- 1:14:52We'll be back in a moment.
- 1:14:53If you're flying to Miami-Fort Lauderdale, you've got to believe Eastern can save you money.
- 1:14:57Eastern has six night coach flights to Miami-Fort Lauderdale,
- 1:15:01more than any other airline that saves you about 20 percent off the regular day coach airfare.
- 1:15:06And you can fly to Miami-Fort Lauderdale on Eastern 727 Whisper jets
- 1:15:11with spacious redesigned interiors or on the wide-body L-1011 Whisper liners.
- 1:15:16For reservation, call the travel specialist, your travel agent, or call Eastern the wings of man.
- 1:15:25The draw, kept in by Butler, it's in back of the Islanders' net.
- 1:15:30Lewis around the board, it's a nice one trying to get it out.
- 1:15:33And it is called for a face-off.
- 1:15:35Let's pause 15 seconds for station identification.
- 1:15:38Islanders lead one nothing.
- 1:15:39This is New York Islanders hot.
- 1:15:41Hi, I'm Ken Fairchild, inviting you to join me mornings on WMCA, 6 to 10 a.m., Monday through Saturday.
- 1:15:50A battle for that box, centering pass taken by Don LaRant, two on one.
- 1:16:02Harris in the middle, Andre Schuch, and it hits a post and comes out to center-right.
- 1:16:08Butler with it, moves it across the line, right wing, down the middle, knocked away by Nystrom.
- 1:16:15Nystrom comes roaring back for the Islanders.
- 1:16:17He's at center-right, shoots it in the corner left of Villamur.
- 1:16:20Villamur moves it away from Howitt, hits up on the left wing, collected for the Rangers by Butler down the middle.
- 1:16:28Drop pass, Butler shooting, Gloucester Smith, knocked away.
- 1:16:32Bruins got it.
- 1:16:33Jude coming back, right wing, Nystrom across the line, drop pass, Bruins to Nystrom.
- 1:16:39Nystrom out front, knocked away.
- 1:16:41Huckers loosened back of the net.
- 1:16:43Howitt after it.
- 1:16:44Ron Harris has it.
- 1:16:45And a power cut off on Howitt as he dragged Ron Harris down.
- 1:16:50So Gary will go off now for two minutes.
- 1:16:52The official time on the penalty is 3.36 of the second period.
- 1:16:58The Islanders are leading 1-0, but now they're going to have to play short-handed.
- 1:17:04It'll be holding on Gary Howitt, face off outside the Rangers line of the neutral is on the center-right.
- 1:17:09Well, there's no question about the foul, Don, but you ought to dwell just for a moment on the play which preceded it.
- 1:17:14Nystrom would have passed out to Tom Leran, who came down two-on-one with Gary Howitt.
- 1:17:19Andre using Howitt as a decoy, let one go, beat Villamil cleanly, and again hit the goal post.
- 1:17:25The Islanders now have two solid goal posts.
- 1:17:28The Hockies are game or in key.
- 1:17:31All right, we're ready now for the draw.
- 1:17:33The Islanders short-handed once again now for two minutes.
- 1:17:36They lead in the hockey game one another.
- 1:17:38Eddie Westphal and Lauren Henning are the penalty killers.
- 1:17:41Dennis Potman, Jerry Hart, the power play for the Rangers, one of the best in the National Hockey League.
- 1:17:47Brad Park at one point with Rod Gilbert.
- 1:17:50Billy Fairburn, who has nine lifetime goals against the Islanders with Rattell and Vickers.
- 1:17:54Fairburn with a puck across the line, right wing to Rattell.
- 1:17:57Rattell knocks off his stick.
- 1:17:59Westphal's got it.
- 1:18:00Eddie trying to clear it.
- 1:18:01Banks it out to center-right.
- 1:18:03Fairburn on the puck, the back pass to Gilbert.
- 1:18:06Sixteen minutes to go, second period.
- 1:18:08The Islanders lead one-nothing to Park.
- 1:18:10Up in the left wing to Vickers, right back to Rattell.
- 1:18:13Rattell down the middle.
- 1:18:15Right wing Fairburn, the shot blocked by Jerry Hart.
- 1:18:18And Fairburn is back on the puck.
- 1:18:21The park, the shot, deflected wide.
- 1:18:24Vickers has the puck.
- 1:18:26Back to the left point.
- 1:18:27Park in the corner, it goes to Vickers.
- 1:18:30Out front, knocked away from Gil Band.
- 1:18:32And the beauty.
- 1:18:34And the puck is taken by Westphal.
- 1:18:36Eddie out, left wing, center-right.
- 1:18:39Westphal wheels, back pass to Jerry Hart.
- 1:18:42And he's got a minute to go on the penalty.
- 1:18:45To Dennis Plotband, to Westphal.
- 1:18:47Eddie gets into the Rangers line.
- 1:18:49Fifty-five seconds on the penalty.
- 1:18:51Back come the Rangers and Gilbert.
- 1:18:53To Rattell down the middle.
- 1:18:55Drop pass to Park.
- 1:18:57Right wing Gilbert slides it on the right wing to Fairburn.
- 1:19:01Back to Gilbert.
- 1:19:02The puck in the slot.
- 1:19:04Rattell, back hander, saved by Billy Smith.
- 1:19:07Thirty-five seconds on the penalty.
- 1:19:10The ball trying to clear.
- 1:19:12It's kept in by Gil Band.
- 1:19:14To Park, to Vickers.
- 1:19:16Shot, barely saved by Billy Smith.
- 1:19:20Uh-oh, here we go.
- 1:19:21Here we go.
- 1:19:23And we're going to have a minor draw, but the officials come right in.
- 1:19:28A lot of bumping and shoving in there.
- 1:19:30Twenty-eight seconds to go on the penalty.
- 1:19:33What a save by Billy Smith.
- 1:19:35Well, Billy Smith has just been fantastic.
- 1:19:37You can tell Billy's concentrating on hockey
- 1:19:39and he's up.
- 1:19:40Here goes Gil Band and Jerry Hart now.
- 1:19:42Starting to push and shove.
- 1:19:43And now John Rattell, which you never see, starts to throw something in there.
- 1:19:47And Jerry Hart is being held off by Neil Armstrong.
- 1:19:50I don't think we're going to have much more than a lot of pushing and shoving here down,
- 1:19:53but Billy Smith, you can tell, has come to play because he's just sitting right in that crease
- 1:19:57thinking about nothing but hockey.
- 1:19:59And when Billy's doing that, you know he's sharp.
- 1:20:02Let's see what Hood's going to call here as he skates slowly to the box.
- 1:20:07Twenty-eight seconds to go on the penalty.
- 1:20:09That's the key factor here.
- 1:20:11To Gary Howlett.
- 1:20:13Billy Fairburn goes out.
- 1:20:16And also Dennis Potbann will go also.
- 1:20:19So the two of them who got embroiled will go out.
- 1:20:22The official time now is five minutes and eight seconds of the period.
- 1:20:28And we'll get the calls now.
- 1:20:31The situation will be, the situation will be, the situation will be,
- 1:20:35Fairburn goes out.
- 1:20:38And also Dennis Potbann will go also.
- 1:20:41So the two of them who got embroiled will go out.
- 1:20:44The official time now is five minutes and eight seconds of the period.
- 1:20:50And we'll get the calls now.
- 1:20:53The situation will be four on three for twenty-eight seconds.
- 1:20:59Hold on, this is no way an advantage.
- 1:21:02Fairburn and Howlett again charging to both.
- 1:21:07So Fairburn and Dennis Potbann go out.
- 1:21:11What I was going to say, Dom, is that this is not an advantage
- 1:21:13because now the Islanders will be playing three against four,
- 1:21:16which is probably a more difficult situation than five against four.
- 1:21:20Four against three is a lot more difficult.
- 1:21:22In addition, the Islanders' best defenseman is sitting in the penalty box.
- 1:21:25The Islanders had a lot of practice with it last night, Jim.
- 1:21:29He's on to the left of Billy Smith, Lewis after the puck trying to clear it.
- 1:21:33He can't.
- 1:21:34Park keeps it in.
- 1:21:36Park to Joe Baer.
- 1:21:37Joe Baer with the puck.
- 1:21:39Moses along the board to retell to Joe Baer the shot blocked.
- 1:21:43West ball cleared.
- 1:21:45And it goes to full length of the ice.
- 1:21:47Villaveu out of the net.
- 1:21:48Islanders trying to kill off the penalty.
- 1:21:51We've got five seconds on the penalty.
- 1:21:53Park, Joe Baer.
- 1:21:54Joe Baer right wing.
- 1:21:56Joe Baer with the puck along the board.
- 1:21:58The centering pass knocked away by Smith.
- 1:22:00It's in the corner.
- 1:22:01Time up on the penalty to Howard.
- 1:22:03Both teams at full strength and the puck is cleared.
- 1:22:06Racing for it now is Park.
- 1:22:10And it'll be icing.
- 1:22:12There's a break in the action.
- 1:22:13One-nothing Islanders will be back in a moment.
- 1:22:15Just in case you've wondered why, Schaefer is the more-than-one-beer beer.
- 1:22:19Just plain more experience is part of it.
- 1:22:21It takes experience to make any beer,
- 1:22:23but it's taken two centuries of brewing experience to make Schaefer.
- 1:22:27You see, more experience helps give Schaefer that special something more.
- 1:22:31That smooth, mellow flavor that keeps coming on beer after frosty beer.
- 1:22:36More experience is one reason.
- 1:22:38But of course there's more than one reason behind the one beer to have
- 1:22:42when you're having more than one.
- 1:22:46All right, we're now four on four, equal strength.
- 1:22:48And of course the men of the man is eliminated on either side or both.
- 1:22:52It opens up the game.
- 1:22:53And then you get down to skating with each other.
- 1:22:5614.08 to go in the second period.
- 1:22:59On the draw, the puck loose, Polar Shoots blocked by Lewis.
- 1:23:02Up on the right wing it goes to Harris.
- 1:23:04Billy Harris with it, cross-eyed to the left of Burt Marshall.
- 1:23:07Back to Harris. Billy out, center right.
- 1:23:09Harris has the puck knocked off his stick by Maroc to Sanderson.
- 1:23:13He loses. Greshner has it at center right.
- 1:23:16Greshner across the line, down the middle.
- 1:23:18Greshner with the puck goes to the left point.
- 1:23:20His pass blocked by Marshall.
- 1:23:22Greshner back on it. Marshall moves it out to center right.
- 1:23:25Penalty coming up on Greshner.
- 1:23:27The Islanders pull their goalie. Harris coming in.
- 1:23:30The shot blocked. Billy back on it. Billy knocked down.
- 1:23:35And we've got a penalty coming up for tripping is the call.
- 1:23:40The official time will be 6.30 of the second period.
- 1:23:46Ron Greshner for tripping.
- 1:23:48The Islanders now will have a man advantage.
- 1:23:51We have 38 seconds to go on the penalties to Billy Fairburn and Dennis Potvin.
- 1:23:57And Ron Greshner now goes out at 6.30 for tripping.
- 1:24:01Well Don, we have the situation here reversed.
- 1:24:03Just a short while ago it was the Rangers playing four on three with the Islanders.
- 1:24:07Now with 38 seconds to go on the penalties to Fairburn and Potvin,
- 1:24:11it'll be the Islanders playing four on three.
- 1:24:13Four on threes and five on fours, five on threes.
- 1:24:16As you said, open up the ice.
- 1:24:18It certainly makes for a more exciting hockey if you're a hockey fan,
- 1:24:21but doesn't do much for coaches Al Arbor and Emil Francis.
- 1:24:26I want to remind you now, the winner of this game,
- 1:24:29as we gave you some possibilities before,
- 1:24:32will be playing Sunday either in Buffalo, Montreal, or Pittsburgh,
- 1:24:38depending on who wins in this first round.
- 1:24:41Faced off to the left of Villamur.
- 1:24:43On the draw, Billy Harris, right point.
- 1:24:46Anderson intercepts.
- 1:24:48Anderson with a puck to Ron Harris.
- 1:24:50To Sanderson, back to Harris.
- 1:24:52Intercepted by Billy Harris.
- 1:24:54Two on one, Billy, he's knocked down.
- 1:24:57And it's an offside on the Islanders.
- 1:24:59Faced off in the center right zone, outside the Rangers line.
- 1:25:03Well that was a big offside call,
- 1:25:05because had the offside not been called, perhaps a tripping call might have been in order.
- 1:25:09As Billy Harris came over the line, he was tripped up by Marat,
- 1:25:12but the offside, which preceded the foul, takes precedence there and the offside stands.
- 1:25:17Again, a good break for the Islanders, which they don't capitalize on.
- 1:25:20The Islanders with a man advantage, four on three in 24 seconds.
- 1:25:24It'll be five on four.
- 1:25:26Billy Fairburn, Dennis Potvin in the penalty box.
- 1:25:30One nothing, the Islanders lead on the first period goal.
- 1:25:33That has been the difference so far by Gillies.
- 1:25:36On the draw, Parisi around the board.
- 1:25:39Harris trying to get it out and Sanderson does get it out.
- 1:25:42Into the Islanders end, stopped by Billy Smith.
- 1:25:45Billy leaves it in back, collected by John Potvin.
- 1:25:49John coming back. John center right.
- 1:25:52John Potvin left wing, Parisi back to John.
- 1:25:55John Potvin right point, through and thick back the shot, skips up into the crowd.
- 1:26:00And we're going to have a face off coming up.
- 1:26:03We're down to nine seconds on the penalty.
- 1:26:05To Billy Fairburn and to Dennis Potvin.
- 1:26:08The Islanders with a man advantage, a four on three situation.
- 1:26:11And we still have a minute 31 to go on the penalty digression.
- 1:26:14Well Don, you see a classic difference here in the styles of the two clubs.
- 1:26:17When the Rangers get the play, the power play, they move the puck looking for a close in shot.
- 1:26:22We've seen the Islanders throughout this series when they've been up on the power play.
- 1:26:26Content to take the long point shot, which I think frankly plays into the hands of your opponent.
- 1:26:30When you have that four on three situation, what you want to do is move it in.
- 1:26:34The clock evidently, Jim has gone awry and it's been wound down.
- 1:26:40The penalty has now concluded on Billy Fairburn of the Rangers and Dennis Potvin of the Islanders.
- 1:26:46So we go to a five on four situation.
- 1:26:49And Ron Greshner now is still in the penalty box.
- 1:26:52He's got a minute and 21 seconds to go on his penalty.
- 1:26:56So the Islanders end up with a man advantage anyway.
- 1:26:58The face off now outside the Rangers line, neutral zone at center right.
- 1:27:02And that puts Dennis Potvin out on the point where he can really do damage.
- 1:27:05So this here with now with one twenty one to go, the Islanders have a good opportunity to set it up.
- 1:27:10One change in the power play.
- 1:27:12Billy Harris has been inserted on right wing with Parisi and Jude Ruhn.
- 1:27:15Eddie Westfall sitting ready now for the face off.
- 1:27:19Sanderson and Jude Ruhn on the draw.
- 1:27:23Comes back on the right to John Potvin, goes to brother Dennis up on the left wing ahead of Parisi.
- 1:27:29Parisi Park race for the puck in the corner.
- 1:27:32Billy Harris has it. Billy Harris with it.
- 1:27:34Billy on the right wing, wheeling away from Sanderson.
- 1:27:37Billy in the back of the net to Parisi.
- 1:27:39He's in the corner of the left to Villamur to Billy Harris.
- 1:27:42Billy now skating around back to the right point.
- 1:27:45John Potvin, cross eyes left point.
- 1:27:47Dennis left wing still in the puck is Jude Ruhn.
- 1:27:51Comes back to Dennis. Dennis to Parisi.
- 1:27:54Out front drawing his shot.
- 1:27:57He was looking for a tip in. Nobody put the stick down.
- 1:28:00John Potvin with it. John to Dennis.
- 1:28:03Dennis shoots, block, and the puck is in center right.
- 1:28:07Thirty seconds to go on the penalty to Greister.
- 1:28:09Dennis Potvin up to Billy Harris.
- 1:28:11The back pass to the right to John Potvin.
- 1:28:14John on the left wing ahead of Parisi.
- 1:28:17Villamur stops it, leads it for Sanderson.
- 1:28:19He fires it around the board and it deflects up into the crowd.
- 1:28:23We'll have another face off coming up.
- 1:28:25At the half in St. Louis in the ABA playoffs,
- 1:28:30the New York Nets lead St. Louis 50 to 48.
- 1:28:34And we'll be bringing you the Nets and St. Louis game,
- 1:28:38if necessary, next Tuesday night at the Coliseum.
- 1:28:41Face off to the left to Villamur and the Rangers end one nothing out of it.
- 1:28:45Well, the islanders experiencing that same problem.
- 1:28:47Able to work the plays at the perimeter but not getting anything enclosed.
- 1:28:51Jude Ruhn put the puck across the goal mouth looking for Harris,
- 1:28:54but Billy was unable to get the stick to it.
- 1:28:56But that's the kind of play that'll score on the power play.
- 1:28:59Twenty seconds to go on the penalty to Greister.
- 1:29:01Islanders with a man advantage a five on four situation.
- 1:29:04Battle for that puck, Donald Iran, Nystrom, the stick's flying.
- 1:29:08Villamur out of the net.
- 1:29:09He bangs it around the board.
- 1:29:11Dennis Potvin trying to keep it in.
- 1:29:13Dennis does.
- 1:29:14Dennis with it.
- 1:29:15To Nystrom, right point.
- 1:29:16John Potvin shoots.
- 1:29:18And the islanders lead it two to nothing.
- 1:29:21And it's a power play goal.
- 1:29:24Four seconds to go on the penalty to Greister.
- 1:29:27And the islanders now have drawn up by two.
- 1:29:30The official time, 8.26 of the second period.
- 1:29:35Tom, I think that one was tipped.
- 1:29:37And I think it'll go to either Denny Potvin or to Gary Howitt,
- 1:29:41both of whom were camped in front of the goal.
- 1:29:43We talked about getting in front.
- 1:29:44That's where you score.
- 1:29:45The islanders having two men in front of the goal.
- 1:29:47Denny Potvin and Gary Howitt.
- 1:29:49It's two to nothing.
- 1:29:50Both teams now, of course, at full strength.
- 1:29:52That terminates the power play.
- 1:29:54On the draw, it's taken by Szymkowski across the line, right wing.
- 1:29:59Lewis sends it around the board.
- 1:30:01And Nystrom lets Marat declare himself and brings it out.
- 1:30:05Bob Nystrom across the line, right wing.
- 1:30:08Bob has it knocked off his stick.
- 1:30:10And Marat sends it around the board.
- 1:30:12It is taken by Howitt.
- 1:30:14Dennis Potvin gets the goal on a tip and is first in the playoff.
- 1:30:18John Potvin, Nystrom the assist.
- 1:30:20Potluse bounces across the mouth of the goal.
- 1:30:23And it comes out to center right.
- 1:30:26Lewis is there.
- 1:30:27To Nystrom, Bob right back down the middle.
- 1:30:30Nystrom quick shot.
- 1:30:31And it is blocked by Marat.
- 1:30:32He catches it in the midsection.
- 1:30:34There's a break in the action.
- 1:30:35Two to nothing, islanders.
- 1:30:36We'll be back in a moment.

- 1:31:16Because that's another big game.
- 1:31:18The draw right out in front of Villamur in the slot.
- 1:31:20Back to the right point.
- 1:31:22Marshall tees it up the shot.
- 1:31:23Knocked away by Villamur on the carom.
- 1:31:26Brad Park's got it.
- 1:31:27Park coming back out for the Rangers.
- 1:31:29Park with it.
- 1:31:30Right after him is Joe Drone, who can skate.
- 1:31:33Park brings it out.
- 1:31:34And Drone is all over him.
- 1:31:35Drone really tying him up.
- 1:31:37Lewis comes in for the puck to help out.
- 1:31:40Gilbear's got it.
- 1:31:41He had Manzinger-Rutel backhander partially blocked by Marshall.
- 1:31:46And the puck is taken by J.P. Parisi.
- 1:31:51Battle for that puck.
- 1:31:52Loosen back of the net.
- 1:31:53Vickers has got it.
- 1:31:55Back to the right point.
- 1:31:56Ron Harris shoots.
- 1:31:57The deflection is up over the net.
- 1:31:59Billy didn't see it.
- 1:32:00Vickers with it.
- 1:32:01Centering pass.
- 1:32:02Knocked away.
- 1:32:03Billy Smith's got it.
- 1:32:04The save by Billy Smith.
- 1:32:06A beauty.
- 1:32:07Another great save by Billy.
- 1:32:09And on the puck is Eddie Westfall.
- 1:32:11And he rolls it into the Rangers' end.
- 1:32:14Nine-fifty to go.
- 1:32:16Second period.
- 1:32:17Islanders leading 2-0.
- 1:32:18What goal?
- 1:32:19Tending by Billy Smith.
- 1:32:21John Rutel across the line.
- 1:32:22Left wing.
- 1:32:23The Vickers.
- 1:32:24Dr. Rutel.
- 1:32:25The shot.
- 1:32:26Hit the side of the net.
- 1:32:27Lewis fights for the puck.
- 1:32:29In comes Marshall.
- 1:32:30It's called for a stoppage in play.
- 1:32:32And with nine-thirty-seven to go, we will have a faceoff to the right of Billy Smith.
- 1:32:37Well, it's official now up in Boston.
- 1:32:39The Boston Bruins.
- 1:32:40Long time Stanley Cup club that's always been considered one of the favorites with Bobby
- 1:32:45Orange, Phil Estesito and company.
- 1:32:47And they've been eliminated down from this year's finals in an upset, a startling upset
- 1:32:51at that.
- 1:32:52The Chicago Blackhawks, third place in their division.
- 1:32:55And they've eliminated the Bruins by the score of six to four.
- 1:32:58Congratulations to the Blackhawks.
- 1:33:00And on they go in the Stanley Cup.
- 1:33:02That means that neither the Rangers nor the Islanders will go to Buffalo.
- 1:33:07Ready now for the draw.
- 1:33:09The Rangers fans really coming to life.
- 1:33:11They're trying to urge their team into the quarterfinal round.
- 1:33:16Billy Smith has been a different so far.
- 1:33:23Bruce Hood, Neil Armstrong, Ray Scaffonello.
- 1:33:25They've got their work cut out for them.
- 1:33:28And Bruce Hood has done an excellent job, Jim, trying to control the game.
- 1:33:34It's been a tough one.
- 1:33:35We're going to do it again.
- 1:33:37Buck went down.

- 1:33:58Buck loose.
- 1:33:59Dennis Potvan fires it around the board.
- 1:34:01Jerry Hart's got it.
- 1:34:02Hart's trying to get it out.

- 1:34:05He's racing with Maraghe.
- 1:34:06He comes in.
- 1:34:07Down the middle.
- 1:34:08What a save by Villamur.
- 1:34:13Harris was set up by Bourne.
- 1:34:15And the puck is in back of the Islanders' net.
- 1:34:18Around the board.
- 1:34:19Second by Denny Potvan to Bourne.
- 1:34:21Tipped it to center right.
- 1:34:22Nine-oh-five to go.
- 1:34:24In the second period.
- 1:34:25Two-nothing Islanders.
- 1:34:27And it was almost three.
- 1:34:28But Villamur with a fantastic save.
- 1:34:31Pucks send it to the Islanders.
- 1:34:32And to the left of Billy Smith.
- 1:34:33Gilles gets it around the board.
- 1:34:35Gilles fights for it to Harris.
- 1:34:36Billy has it.
- 1:34:37Goes to his left for Bobby Bourne.
- 1:34:39He gets out to center right.
- 1:34:40Bourne after the puck.
- 1:34:41Bourne now having trouble.
- 1:34:43Loses to Fairburn.
- 1:34:44Fairburn with it.
- 1:34:45He's in the corner with Billy Smith.
- 1:34:47The Islanders furiously trying to get it out.
- 1:34:49The Rangers fighting to keep it in.
- 1:34:51And the battle continues for the Pucks.
- 1:34:53Bang around.
- 1:34:54Fairburn's got it.
- 1:34:55Fairburn right wing coming in.
- 1:34:57Down the middle.

- 1:35:00Fairburn spun around.
- 1:35:01Penalty coming up on Jerry Hart.
- 1:35:02And the official time on the penalty now is 11.32 of the period.
- 1:35:13There's a break in the action.
- 1:35:15Two-nothing Islanders will be back in a moment.
- 1:35:17You must have a comment on whether or not you think the Yanks will win the pennant.
- 1:35:21Well that's what WMCA is all about.
- 1:35:24And that's what my program is all about.
- 1:35:26Hello I'm John Sterling.
- 1:35:28And I talk sports every weekday evening from 7 to 10.
- 1:35:31And all Saturday afternoon as well.
- 1:35:33And I want to talk to you.
- 1:35:35Hey what do you say?
- 1:35:38WMCA.
- 1:35:42WMCA.
- 1:35:45Before you go.
- 1:35:48Jerry Hart goes out for holding at 11.32.
- 1:35:52The Islanders now are shorthanded once again.
- 1:35:55They've been shorthanded once.
- 1:35:57Two times.
- 1:35:58Three.
- 1:35:59Fourth penalty on the Islanders.
- 1:36:02On the draw to Billy Smith.
- 1:36:04Billy sends it back to the left point area.
- 1:36:06Park keeps it in.
- 1:36:07Rangers now really pressing.
- 1:36:09Lewis trying to get it out.
- 1:36:10Roger Behr's got it.
- 1:36:12Eddie Westphal pushes him out of the zone.
- 1:36:15Centering pass.
- 1:36:16Vickers to Park.
- 1:36:17Left point.
- 1:36:18The shot.
- 1:36:19Block.
- 1:36:20And cleared by a heading.
- 1:36:22Eight minutes to go in the second period.
- 1:36:25Both teams with furious action.
- 1:36:27What a game.
- 1:36:28As both have settled down to the game of hockey.
- 1:36:31On the puck is Richelle across the line.
- 1:36:34Right wing.
- 1:36:35The fair burn centering pass.
- 1:36:36Deflected.
- 1:36:37Park keeps it in.
- 1:36:38Goes to Joe Bear.
- 1:36:39His pass knocked away.
- 1:36:40Eddie Westphal clears.
- 1:36:42And he sends it back to the Rangers end.
- 1:36:45We're now to a minute and ten to go on the penalty to Jerry Hart who went out for holding.
- 1:36:51The Rangers come back.
- 1:36:53With it now is Richelle.
- 1:36:56His pass blocked.
- 1:36:58Park shoots.
- 1:36:59Great save by Billy Smith.
- 1:37:02Park again on the puck.
- 1:37:03In the part of the right of Billy Smith.
- 1:37:05And look at this.
- 1:37:06Butler and Lewis fighting in the crease.
- 1:37:09And they're going at it.
- 1:37:10And the puck is loose.
- 1:37:11Billy Smith sits on it.
- 1:37:13And here's a real draw now.
- 1:37:15And Butler jumps on top of Lewis.
- 1:37:19And now Lewis is on top of Butler.
- 1:37:22Well this one's a real pier sixer as Butler was sent in there to stir it up.
- 1:37:26And now he's got bodies all over the ice.
- 1:37:28It looks a little bit like last night.
- 1:37:32Bert Marshall was down on the ice with Brad Park.
- 1:37:35And they let each other up as the officials now separate.
- 1:37:38Butler and Lewis.
- 1:37:41Both of them tangling in front of the net.
- 1:37:43Lewis doing his job trying to keep Butler away.
- 1:37:46Jerry Butler trying to stir it up.
- 1:37:48I think they both got to go for five here.
- 1:37:51Well the big thing is that the puck was smothered in the crease.
- 1:37:55And that's what it's all about.
- 1:37:56We got 48 seconds to go on the penalty to Hart.
- 1:37:58John, I hate to interrupt you but I think Butler may have lost a tooth.
- 1:38:01As they're looking around down there in the ice now.
- 1:38:03Or maybe a contact lens because now Butler's skating well.
- 1:38:06I was going to say because most of the boys have lost their teeth.
- 1:38:11Butler of course is a very aggressive guy.
- 1:38:13He's in the penalty box.
- 1:38:14Lewis is going to join him.
- 1:38:16You can see it coming because Butler wanted to try to stay in the slot.
- 1:38:20Then he got into the crease area.
- 1:38:22And Billy Smith wanted him out of there.
- 1:38:24Lewis did the right thing.
- 1:38:25He tried to get him out of there.
- 1:38:26And you know there was going to be a battle.
- 1:38:27Well I hope this is five and five, John.
- 1:38:29Because I think what Emile may have wanted was a couple of two minute penalties.
- 1:38:33To set up a four on three situation.
- 1:38:35I hope they each get five here.
- 1:38:37Oh no.
- 1:38:39Yes, okay.
- 1:38:40There it goes.
- 1:38:41It's going to go for seven minutes.
- 1:38:42So that will be a coincidental penalty.
- 1:38:44And there will be no manpower shortage as a result.
- 1:38:46Alright, 48 seconds to go on the penalty to Jerry Hart.
- 1:38:50The Islanders are short handed.
- 1:38:52The Rangers and the Islanders battling furiously here.
- 1:38:56Seven sixteen to go in the second period.
- 1:38:59And the Islanders lead it two to nothing.
- 1:39:01And the hunt continues for a contact lens.
- 1:39:04And Jim you can imagine it's a very very light tissue on top of that ice.
- 1:39:09It's almost impossible to find.
- 1:39:11Right it is.
- 1:39:12I notice Butler has a ghost head though, Dom, down there in the penalty box.
- 1:39:16So I'm not certain that he wears contact lenses, are you?
- 1:39:19I don't know at all, Jim, whether he does.
- 1:39:23Both of them got in good shots though.
- 1:39:25We wouldn't want to give them the wrong impression I think.
- 1:39:27The first four rounds of the brawl went to Butler.
- 1:39:29And I guess the last four went to Lewis.
- 1:39:32And we gave him a draw.
- 1:39:34I tell you Jim, you remind me of Johnny Addy.
- 1:39:36Was he one of your favorites?
- 1:39:38Yes he was.
- 1:39:39On the puck is Henning Henning.
- 1:39:40So Denny Plotman in.
- 1:39:42Shot. Goal!
- 1:39:44And the Islanders go out front three to nothing.
- 1:39:47And it's a short handed goal for Dennis Plotman.
- 1:39:52The official time of the goal.
- 1:39:54Twelve fifty one of the second period.
- 1:39:57Well, Lorne Henning made the play.
- 1:39:59Lorne Henning blocking the pass.
- 1:40:00Sending Dennis Plotman in with forty one seconds.
- 1:40:03Still up on the board of the penalty.
- 1:40:04Plotman cleanly beating Villa Muro with a slap shot.
- 1:40:08And all of a sudden this garden crowd is really shocked.
- 1:40:11They don't believe what they're seeing, Dom.
- 1:40:12As the Islanders jump out three oh.
- 1:40:16Well, it's not over.
- 1:40:17We got seven oh nine to go here in the second period.
- 1:40:19The entire third period.
- 1:40:21The Islanders are still short handed.
- 1:40:23A short handed goal for Denny Plotman.
- 1:40:28Dennis Plotman from Lorne Henning.
- 1:40:30Joe Bear across the line.
- 1:40:32Right wing.
- 1:40:33Eddie Westball has the puck.
- 1:40:34Gets it out to center right and rolls into the Rangers end.
- 1:40:38Twelve fifty one the official time of the goal.
- 1:40:41For Dennis' second goal of the night.
- 1:40:43Second of the playoff.
- 1:40:45Rick Middleton up to his own line.
- 1:40:47The puck taken by Butler down the middle of Rattell.
- 1:40:49He's ridden off.
- 1:40:50And Burt Marshall's got it.
- 1:40:52Rattell fighting for the puck.
- 1:40:55It's in the corner.
- 1:40:56Irvin after it.
- 1:40:58Dennis Plotman clears.
- 1:40:59Three seconds.
- 1:41:00Two.
- 1:41:01One.
- 1:41:02And time up on the penalty.
- 1:41:04Both teams at full strength.
- 1:41:05Rodgiel Bear with the puck.
- 1:41:07The Islanders change of the fly.
- 1:41:09To Stempkowski up on the left wing.
- 1:41:11And the puck is knocked away by Denny Plotman.
- 1:41:13Regained by Stempkowski.
- 1:41:15To Ted Irvin.
- 1:41:16Taken by McMillan.
- 1:41:17McMillan two on one.
- 1:41:19Left wing.
- 1:41:20Shot.
- 1:41:21Safe.
- 1:41:22Shot.
- 1:41:23Great save.
- 1:41:24The shot off the post by Stonlarod.
- 1:41:25Villamur with a couple of great saves.
- 1:41:26The Islanders with another great opportunity.
- 1:41:29Six minutes to play in the second period.
- 1:41:32And the puck is battled for and sat on.
- 1:41:35Along the board.
- 1:41:36To the right of the goaltender Villamur.
- 1:41:38The Islanders lead it three nothing.
- 1:41:40Five fifty six to go.
- 1:41:41Second period.
- 1:41:42Well the Islanders coming very close there to making it four nothing.
- 1:41:45And now Eddie Jopman is jumping over the board tonight.
- 1:41:48Can't remember when I've seen so many goaltenders in games between the Islanders and the Raysers.
- 1:41:54Kill Villamur to get him his dude down.
- 1:41:56I really think it's hurting.
- 1:41:57He's been moving very slowly.
- 1:41:59And he did his best out there tonight.
- 1:42:01He's a great goaltender.
- 1:42:02And I think the leg was really bothering him.
- 1:42:04It was.
- 1:42:05And he is a great goaltender.
- 1:42:06And he did an outstanding job.
- 1:42:09And Villamur of course not happy with himself.
- 1:42:12He's a great competitor.
- 1:42:14But he really was great last night and again tonight.
- 1:42:17Face off to the right of Eddie Jackaman.
- 1:42:20Who comes in now.
- 1:42:22And it'll be the right of Eddie in the Rangers end.
- 1:42:25Well Andre Cylaron had a great opportunity there to make it four nothing.
- 1:42:29Right before the goalie change.
- 1:42:31And we ought to point out that Jopman comes into the game cold.
- 1:42:33His last warm up was some fifteen minutes before the game.
- 1:42:36And he really didn't warm up very well as he was not the starter here tonight.
- 1:42:40On the draw.
- 1:42:41Taken by Ron Harris.
- 1:42:43The center right.
- 1:42:44To Urban.
- 1:42:45Back to Szymkowski.
- 1:42:46Knocked off his stick.

- 1:42:52And Jerry Hart is after it.
- 1:42:54And we're going to have a face off coming up.
- 1:42:57And a slashing call coming up.
- 1:43:00The official time on that slashing penalty now.
- 1:43:03Is going to be fourteen minutes and twenty seconds.
- 1:43:06Of the second period.
- 1:43:08Let's pause fifteen seconds for station identification.
- 1:43:11The Islanders lead three nothing.
- 1:43:13This is New York Islanders hockey.
- 1:43:15This is WMCA New York. I'm Leon Lewis.

- 1:43:23489-1155.
- 1:43:25Ron Harris two minutes for slashing the Islanders now.
- 1:43:35Have Dave Lewis still in the penalty box.
- 1:43:39Who was involved in that brawl with Butler.
- 1:43:42But of course those were coincidental majors.
- 1:43:46So it didn't matter.
- 1:43:47So now we have a five on four situation.
- 1:43:50The Islanders with a man advantage.
- 1:43:52They lead to the hockey game three to nothing.
- 1:43:54Five forty to play second period.

- 1:47:08He let Jakobman hit him three or four times Tom.
- 1:47:09And never threw a push.
- 1:47:10He didn't hit him.
- 1:47:11I don't understand that Gary.

- 1:47:20Let's see how they call it Howlett.
- 1:47:21A crowd chanting Eddie.

- 1:47:42Gary's a competitor.
- 1:47:43We both know that.
- 1:47:44Gary held his hands up in the air.
- 1:47:45Step back and never threw a punch.
- 1:47:46Let's see what happens though.
- 1:47:47Let's get the call first.

- 1:47:51And of course Eddie Jakobman's not going to back off either.
- 1:47:54He's a great competitor.
- 1:47:55Let's get the call now.
- 1:47:56This is what I mean.
- 1:47:57Look at this.
- 1:47:58Oh now Howlett's going to get a penalty.
- 1:47:59I knew it.
- 1:48:00Oh man.
- 1:48:01All right let's see how they call it and then we'll give it to you.
- 1:48:02The official time of the penalty will be seventeen thirty four of the second period.
- 1:48:07The Islanders are leading the game.
- 1:48:10Bob Knight from his best friend tells him to go to the penalty box and we were following
- 1:48:27the puck.
- 1:48:28As Jim gave it to you now let's get these calls first.
- 1:48:30That's why Gary Howlett wouldn't fight with him.
- 1:48:32He wanted the advantage and Jakobman knew it and tried to draw him into it and Eddie got
- 1:48:37away with it.
- 1:48:38Well it remains to be seen what the total calls will be.
- 1:48:41I know Hood had his hand raised for Jakobman on the cross check.
- 1:48:44Let's see what happens in the fighting situation.
- 1:48:47I somehow have to believe Hood was looking right at it.
- 1:48:50I know he's going to play.
- 1:48:51I think the Islanders ought to get an advantage out of this situation.
- 1:48:54All right it's three to nothing.
- 1:48:57Second period.
- 1:48:58The Islanders lead two twenty six to go.
- 1:49:01Chicago has already defeated Boston in a best two out of three.
- 1:49:04So that means the Islanders will not play in Buffalo.
- 1:49:08Now with Chicago winning we have to wait and see who wins between Los Angeles and Toronto.
- 1:49:13Here are the panel is now.
- 1:49:18Gary Howlett is going to go off.
- 1:49:20He already has.
- 1:49:23Roughing on Gary Howlett.
- 1:49:31Two minutes for roughing, two minutes for cross checking.
- 1:49:39Game misconduct for Pete Demkowski who was the third man on the fight.
- 1:49:44Well I have to say that's fairly equitable.
- 1:49:46I knew that the call was going to go to Jakobman for roughing.
- 1:49:51I saw the roughing.
- 1:49:52I saw Hood's hand go up.
- 1:49:53The only smart move that Gary made.
- 1:49:55Gary took a punch or two and you have to give Gary a lot of credit.
- 1:49:58They gave him roughing.
- 1:49:59I don't think he was guilty of roughing myself.
- 1:50:01But if you had to look at it objectively I thought Hood handled that situation very well.
- 1:50:05He's done a great job really.
- 1:50:06This is a very spirited game.
- 1:50:08It's a very difficult game to call.
- 1:50:10I think he's handled it extremely well.
- 1:50:12And you know how high tempers are because all the marbles are on the table.
- 1:50:16So to recap it for you.
- 1:50:18Eddie Jakobman will have his penalty served by Nick Beveley.
- 1:50:23He gets two minutes for roughing, two minutes for the cross check.
- 1:50:26Gary Howlett two minutes for roughing.
- 1:50:28Pete Stamkowski the game misconduct.
- 1:50:31He was the third man in the fight.
- 1:50:33So he's out for the remainder of the game.
- 1:50:35However there's no loss of personnel on the ice.
- 1:50:37So the Islanders are going to come out of this thing with a man advantage.
- 1:50:40And that's the most important thing.
- 1:50:42Well they may come out of it with even more than that Don.
- 1:50:44Because we've seen Billy Smith get involved in these kinds of things.
- 1:50:47And I don't believe a goaltender who gets involved in fighting is truly concentrating on being a goaltender.
- 1:50:52I know Smithy usually gets involved in games when the Islanders are either way up or way out.
- 1:50:56And the Rangers right here you know can ill afford to give up another goal.
- 1:51:01Jakobman has been brought in out of the bullpen to stem the tide.
- 1:51:03The first thing he does is get involved in a scrap.
- 1:51:06Gary who I've known Gary a while and Gary let's say to be truthful has provoked on occasion.
- 1:51:11But in that particular situation Gary Howlett was very very innocent.
- 1:51:15He was skating away from Jakobman.
- 1:51:17Jakobman came out of the crease to cross check him.
- 1:51:19That was the first two minute roughing call.
- 1:51:21Gary just stepped around looked at Jakobman.
- 1:51:24Jakobman threw at least one or two punches.
- 1:51:26And Gary really made no effort to hit the goaltender.
- 1:51:29Alright ready for the draw now outside the Rangers line.
- 1:51:32It's a four on four situation for two minutes.
- 1:51:35Then the Islanders are going to get the man advantage for the other two minutes.
- 1:51:38On the puck Ron Harris.
- 1:51:40Cross the line left wing.
- 1:51:41Harris with the puck it's offside.
- 1:51:43Face off in the neutral zone at center right outside the Islanders line.
- 1:51:47Two fifteen to go second period.
- 1:51:49Islanders out front three nothing.
- 1:51:51First period goal by Clark Gulley second period.
- 1:51:54Dennis Potman has a power play goal and a short handed goal.
- 1:51:58He has been brilliant tonight.
- 1:52:00On the draw in the corner of the left of Billy Smith.
- 1:52:03Bert Marshall banks it around the board.
- 1:52:05John Potman's got it.
- 1:52:06John trying to get it out.
- 1:52:08Wheels to the right of his goaltender.
- 1:52:10Goes to Marshall back to John Potman.
- 1:52:12John up on the right wing off the stick of Jude drawing.
- 1:52:15Goes back to the puck.
- 1:52:16So does Harris.
- 1:52:17It's in back of the net.
- 1:52:19We're into two minutes to go now in the second period.
- 1:52:22DeJohn Ritale right back to Brad Park.
- 1:52:25Park comes out up the middle.
- 1:52:26Center right.
- 1:52:27Park coming across the line right wing.
- 1:52:29Park with the puck.
- 1:52:30Park still controlling.
- 1:52:32Wheeling.
- 1:52:33Park to Harris.
- 1:52:34Right point.
- 1:52:35Shot wide.
- 1:52:36And the caram rolls all the way out to center right.
- 1:52:39Minute and a half to go in the second period.
- 1:52:41And we have a minute to go on the penalty to Hallett before the Islanders get the man advantage.
- 1:52:47And the puck fired in the Islanders.
- 1:52:49And Burt Marshall has it.
- 1:52:51Burt in back of the net.
- 1:52:52Jill Baer is forechecking.
- 1:52:53Burt now trying to get it out.
- 1:52:55Burt with it up on the left wing off the board.
- 1:52:58Jude drawing with the puck.
- 1:52:59Center right.
- 1:53:00Jude coming across the line down the middle.
- 1:53:02Jude drawing.
- 1:53:03Trying to move around Ron Harris.
- 1:53:05Still has the puck.
- 1:53:06Knocked away by Jackaman.
- 1:53:07And Brad Park has it.
- 1:53:09Minute to go in the second period.
- 1:53:10Three nothing Islanders.
- 1:53:12Jackaman just moves the puck in back of the net.
- 1:53:15Thirty seconds to go on the penalty to Gary Hallett.
- 1:53:18And then the Islanders will have a man advantage.
- 1:53:20Eddie Westfall has the puck.
- 1:53:21He steals it on the right wing.
- 1:53:23Eddie loses to Sean Rattell.
- 1:53:25Rattell coming back.
- 1:53:26Back past to Brad Park.
- 1:53:28Park brings it out.
- 1:53:29Center right.
- 1:53:30Park.
- 1:53:31Across the line.
- 1:53:32Drop pass Harris.
- 1:53:33Down the middle.
- 1:53:34Jude shot.
- 1:53:35Made by Billy Smith.
- 1:53:37And the puck is battled for.
- 1:53:39Dennis Puckman clears.
- 1:53:40Gillies collect.
- 1:53:41Two on one.
- 1:53:42Clark shoots.
- 1:53:43Knocked down.
- 1:53:44The shot up over the net.
- 1:53:45Hit the top of the crossbar.
- 1:53:47It greens it.
- 1:53:48And the Islanders now have a man advantage.
- 1:53:50As Hallett's penalty is up.
- 1:53:52On the puck.
- 1:53:53Burt Marshall goes to his right.
- 1:53:55Dennis Puckman to Westfall.
- 1:53:56Eddie to Hallett.
- 1:53:57Left wing.
- 1:53:58Gillies shoot.
- 1:53:59A save and a beauty by Jackaman.
- 1:54:01Out front.
- 1:54:02Deflected away.
- 1:54:03Marshall with it.
- 1:54:04Burt shot.
- 1:54:05Blocked.
- 1:54:06Eddie Westfall keeps it in.
- 1:54:07And that ought to do it for the period.
- 1:54:08And that's it.
- 1:54:09At the end of two full periods of play.
- 1:54:11The Islanders lead 3-0.
- 1:54:14Have you noticed how many banks now charge 15 cents per check with their special checking
- 1:54:18account?
- 1:54:19Hey buddy, keep it down, will ya?
- 1:54:20It's inflation.
- 1:54:21I asked you to keep it down.
- 1:54:22That's why European American Bank introduces noflation checking.
- 1:54:24Are you gonna keep it down or not?
- 1:54:26That's what I'm trying to tell ya.
- 1:54:27Noflation means the per check charge at European American is still just 10 cents.
- 1:54:31There's no minimum balance and the service charge is still just 75 cents per month.
- 1:54:35Checks still just 10 cents at European American?
- 1:54:37Yeah.
- 1:54:38You did keep it down.
- 1:54:39European American Bank, member FDIC.
- 1:54:42We've made a commitment to bring you better banking.
- 1:54:45Yankees.

- 1:55:21Now here's a word from the number one beer in New York.
- 1:55:24Hey, Schaefer is the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 1:55:34New York is full of landmarks.
- 1:55:36The Battery, Washington Square, Shea Stadium, and over on Kent Avenue in Brooklyn, there's another landmark.
- 1:55:41The Schaefer Brewery.
- 1:55:43Since 1842, there's always been a Schaefer Brewery in New York.
- 1:55:47Because New York has always liked Schaefer's way of tasting first beer good, beer after beer, year after year.
- 1:55:54Schaefer's a beer born and brewed right here in New York.
- 1:55:57It's New York's number one beer.
- 1:56:00Schaefer is the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 1:56:13With the Islanders leading 1-0, Dennis Potvan picked up a power play goal from John Potvan and Bob Nice from an 8.26 to make it 2-0.
- 1:56:21And then Dennis Potvan, a shorthanded goal, his second of the playoffs from Lauren Henning at 12.51, made it 3-0.
- 1:56:28Shots on goal, 13 for the Islanders, 11 for the Rangers in the second period.
- 1:56:33The Rangers have outshot the Islanders 26-21 at the 2 period.
- 1:56:38Intermission highlights are next on New York Islanders hockey.
- 1:56:413-0 Islanders will be back in a moment.
- 1:56:45On July 1, 1974, after years of selling only one kind of gasoline, premium, the Getty Oil Company introduced a new gasoline, Getty Nolent.
- 1:56:57The kind of gasoline most 1971 to 1974 cars can run on, and most 1975 cars have to run on.
- 1:57:06Like most oil companies, we at Getty expected our Nolent to account for only 5 to 10 percent of our sales.
- 1:57:13But we had a surprise.
- 1:57:15We're selling twice as much Getty Nolent as we thought.
- 1:57:18Maybe it's because Getty Nolent is a little bit better than a Nolent has to be.
- 1:57:23So it gave people the kind of performance they wanted, and they gave us their business.
- 1:57:29Remember, don't waste gasoline.
- 1:57:32But when you do drive, fill up with Getty, premium or Nolent.
- 1:57:37Getty, you've got what's best for your car.
- 1:57:41This is Jim Garvey at Madison Square Garden with a score after two periods of play.
- 1:57:48The New York Rangers no score and the New York Islanders 3.
- 1:57:51Yes, that's right. It's the New York Islanders 3 and the Rangers no score,
- 1:57:55and what has to be considered quite an upset in the making here at the Garden tonight.
- 1:57:59Certainly a pleasure for me to welcome to our Islander Highlights program here.
- 1:58:04An old friend, a fellow who is probably better known to a lot of our listeners out there,
- 1:58:08is the voice of the New York Yankees, the scooter, Phil Rizzuto. And Phil, welcome.
- 1:58:12Jim, thank you very much. And this is one of the most exciting games I believe I've seen.
- 1:58:16Of course, they're all exciting when they're fighting to get in the final to the Stanley Cup,
- 1:58:20but what impresses me is the fact that the Islanders are outplaying the Rangers so much
- 1:58:26that it looks like the Islanders have more men on the ice.
- 1:58:29Well, Phil, it certainly does. And I think you made a very perceptive comment as an athlete would
- 1:58:34while we were off the air here. And I think I'd like to ask you again
- 1:58:38what you think is making a difference in this skating ability.
- 1:58:41And I think I'll let you tell our fans.
- 1:58:42Well, Jim, it looks to me like the Rangers don't have the youth that the Islanders have,
- 1:58:48and those young legs have just caught up and passed the Rangers now,
- 1:58:52and they're playing so much better hockey.
- 1:58:54It seems like they've had more two-on-ones and three-on-ones than the Rangers have had in the whole ballgame.
- 1:59:00Well, Phil, I couldn't agree with you more. As we finished that second period with the Islanders on the manpower advantage,
- 1:59:05they came in three-on-one again. And except for some sparkling work by Giacomon in the Ranger cage,
- 1:59:10it could be 4-0 right now.
- 1:59:12It certainly could. You know, it was interesting, Jim, because you were telling me about Billy Smith and Nets,
- 1:59:17and I've only seen the Islanders two other times in person, never against the Rangers.
- 1:59:21I've seen them on TV a lot.
- 1:59:23But it seems like, as you mentioned, if Billy Smith stops the first few hard shots at him, he's tough,
- 1:59:30and I don't see how they can get one by him.
- 1:59:32And it almost looks like he's got a magnet in his whole body to attract that puck.
- 1:59:35Boy, it sure does. You know, Phil, earlier in the season, right here in this very building,
- 1:59:40Billy Smith was victimized by three early goals in the first 0-4 minutes of a hockey game with the Rangers.
- 1:59:45They came out from the blue line. They were scored by Jil Marat, Beverly, you know,
- 1:59:49fellows who don't usually score. They were long drives.
- 1:59:52And I think Billy was a little shell-shocked for about two weeks,
- 1:59:55and Coach Al Arbor really didn't use him in this building again.
- 1:59:58Glenn Resch was playing all the Ranger games, in fact, doing pretty well until last night.
- 2:00:02And this was quite a startling revelation to a lot of the hockey people here who really expected Resch to be in the cage.
- 2:00:08Al Arbor went out on a limb, but gee, Al Arbor's been doing that all year,
- 2:00:11and that's why he's the NHL Coach of the Year, and in my book, he's the coach of the lifetime for the Islanders,
- 2:00:17because he came right back in here with Billy Smith, and as you call it, Billy looks like he's unbeatable here tonight.
- 2:00:23Well, you know, you've got to give Arbor a lot of credit.
- 2:00:25There are a lot of coaches, and I know, that have cracked under the strain a lot less than Al is going through,
- 2:00:32but he must be instilling a lot of confidence in this club.
- 2:00:35The Potvin brothers, John and Dennis, of course Dennis has two goals tonight, one on a deflection on a shot by his brother,
- 2:00:43but he's such a tough kid, and such an outstanding player to be that young,
- 2:00:48that I think I heard a couple interviews with the Islanders after they beat the Rangers in that first game,
- 2:00:56said that in prior games they had played against the Rangers, they were so in awe of the Rangers,
- 2:01:01you know, they had read about them, and here they were playing against them, but after that first game,
- 2:01:06they kind of got their feet wet, it's just like a ball player in a World Series, you're nervous until the game starts,
- 2:01:11and now they're playing them, well, better than even up, and I'm sure the Islander fans are very happy.
- 2:01:16Well, Philly, and all the way the schedule maker came through this season,
- 2:01:20the Islanders and Rangers met twice during the last week of the regular season,
- 2:01:24both of those were big games as the two clubs finished with identical point totals of 88.
- 2:01:29Many folks felt that this was a fluke, the Rangers were given the odd game in the Garden because of more wins,
- 2:01:35and the Rangers had never been defeated by the Islanders in Madison Square Garden
- 2:01:40in the three years of existence that these two teams have played games,
- 2:01:43so that last game, while it really didn't matter too much in the final overall standing,
- 2:01:48I think psychologically gave this Islander club a big lift when they knew they could beat this club in this building.
- 2:01:53That's got a lot to do with getting confidence, just playing that game and knowing what they can do and what their potential is,
- 2:02:00and as soon as they loosen up, they're playing excellent hockey.
- 2:02:03I'd like to see, you know, I can't figure out, you and Dom were trying to tell me who will play who if the Islanders do win this game,
- 2:02:12but I guess to the Islanders it doesn't matter too much,
- 2:02:15except that if they do have to go against my crew, it'll be a lot tougher than going against some of the other clubs.
- 2:02:21Right, and I'm sure Phil, the same confusion that you had and I had is certainly going through the minds of our listeners out there,
- 2:02:27and I'll try to bring you up to date here very briefly.
- 2:02:29If the Islanders are successful in holding this lead here tonight,
- 2:02:33who they play will be contingent upon the game between the L.A. Kings and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
- 2:02:39The Chicago Blackhawks, the late Tuners in, have already defeated the Boston Bruins up in Boston by a 6-4 count,
- 2:02:45so if the L.A. Kings defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs, it'll be the Islanders in Montreal.
- 2:02:51If on the other hand the Toronto Maple Leafs are successful up there,
- 2:02:55it will be the Islanders in Pittsburgh, certainly a better draw for the Islanders,
- 2:02:59so I'm sure Islander fans in addition to rooting for their own clubs are rooting for the Maple Leafs out on the coast.
- 2:03:05Well, I'm sure they are because it means an awful lot,
- 2:03:08because if they can get by Pittsburgh, then that means they would be in the finals of the Stanley Cup?
- 2:03:12Well, that's about it, Phil. Wouldn't that be something?
- 2:03:14Oh, that'd be unbelievable, and New York deserves one team in the finals this year.
- 2:03:19Of course, they've got the Nets over there who always seem to do well.
- 2:03:23The Knicks are struggling very badly, and the Yankees and the Nets,
- 2:03:27it's too long a season to tell what's going to happen,
- 2:03:29but it's been too long outside of the Nets for a New York team not to win some kind of a championship.
- 2:03:35Well, Phil, you know, you certainly have the shortstop and a great Yankee club that probably was the club I idolized most when I grew up.
- 2:03:43I know a great deal about that, and we are certainly happy to have you and the Yankees on WMCA,
- 2:03:48and you know, you're one of us now. Let's talk a little baseball if we would for a couple of minutes.
- 2:03:52The Catfish went today, and from what you were telling me, except for a couple of bad pitches, he pitched a pretty creditable game.
- 2:03:57He did. At one point he retired 13 men in a row, but as I said, he made two bad pitches,
- 2:04:02one of them to Willie Horton in the first inning with a man on that.
- 2:04:05Willie hit out in the Flushing Bay, and then in the sixth inning, he walked his first man of the ballgame.
- 2:04:11That always is trouble for a good control pitcher.
- 2:04:14Another man got on on a base hit, and then he groove one, just got it up a little too high to Nate Colbert,
- 2:04:19who the Tigers got from San Diego, and he hit it out in the bullpen in left field, and five runs, all of them on home is, were just enough.
- 2:04:28And then Mickey Lowlis, who had been struggling, had the bases loaded, nobody out.
- 2:04:32They brought in John Hiller, pitched a Bobby Bonds, bases loaded, and nobody out.
- 2:04:37We didn't score. He struck Bonds out, and Bob Oliver hit into a double play.
- 2:04:41Well, Hiller's one of the best coming out of the bullpen, and it's obvious that he's in midseason form,
- 2:04:45but, Bill, you know, it's early in the season, and, you know, you pick up the newspapers,
- 2:04:48and you see the Yankees have dropped their first two games, and people are wondering what's wrong with the Yankees.
- 2:04:52I know they've had some nagging injuries. I've been reading that Elliott Maddox, Roy White, have had some injuries.
- 2:04:57And I know gripping that bat in the cold weather can't help when you have some injuries.
- 2:05:01No, absolutely not. But I've said it's something.
- 2:05:03Jim, you and Dom, after doing a game here, if you had to do a baseball game, it'd be like a picnic.
- 2:05:10I have always contended, and I've never gotten an argument, that you get more for your money
- 2:05:16watching a hockey game than any other sport. It's the fastest game I know, with continuous action all the time.
- 2:05:22And I don't think there's any better place to be if you want excitement than at a hockey game.
- 2:05:26Well, coming from Phil Rizzuto, who's certainly an accomplished golfer, a great baseball player,
- 2:05:31and an avid sportsman in every sport, football, basketball, and the like, I think that's a great compliment to hockey.
- 2:05:37And Phil, I've been involved in all of those myself a little bit, and I couldn't agree with you more.
- 2:05:41It's my first year here with the Islanders, and it's been one of the most pleasant years I've ever had,
- 2:05:45I think, coming to the games, getting to know these young players and the coaches and the fans, I think, have made it great.
- 2:05:50But the game of hockey is just, here you have a game, it's 3-0.
- 2:05:53In some other sports, you know, you take a big lead into the closing moments, and it's everybody's out for air, you know.
- 2:05:59And this one, I expect to see the Rangers come out flying, because there's no tomorrow.
- 2:06:03That's true, and of course it's nice to be on a winter too, Jim.
- 2:06:06It makes the games you're doing so much more exciting, and the fans appreciate it so much more.
- 2:06:13And you know, it's interesting, I was listening to you and Dom last night, and it wasn't that good a game because of so many fights.
- 2:06:21But I tell you, you really got excited during those fights, and it was very funny and interesting listening to you describe the fights.
- 2:06:28Oh, there it comes, and look at this. I was wishing I could see it on TV. We don't happen to have cable.
- 2:06:33So I was listening to you and Dom, and it was exciting.
- 2:06:36But tonight, I think it's got to be one of the best played hockey games that people in New York have had the privilege to watch.
- 2:06:44Well, Phil, you know, after the game I met Frank Inavari, who was the Chief of Officials, and we had an animated discussion downstairs.
- 2:06:51And Dom told me, he said, if Phil Rizzuto were here, your rating would be at least 126 Holy Cows.
- 2:06:57Well, there's no doubt about it. Yeah, I say hockey is so exciting.
- 2:07:01I mean, it's so interesting that there's continuous play, and you've got to be right on the ball all the time.
- 2:07:08I'm amazed at the way Dom is able to handle it. I don't know whether you do any play-by-play, Jim, but I know you do the color very well and handle it very well.
- 2:07:17But the play-by-play is so fast moving, and with the lines changing and everything, I mean, you've really got to be on the ball to keep track of all the players in the game.
- 2:07:25Well, I think the Islanders have a find in Dom Valentino. He's not here to hear you and I, but after working with Dom for a whole season, Phil, he's a pro.
- 2:07:32And in addition to that, I think he engenders in the game. He has a real interest in the game and in the club, and I think that's important.
- 2:07:38He just doesn't come out here to kind of give a superficial effort to it. He's into every game. He does his homework before the games, and he's a real pro.
- 2:07:46Well, he's doing the same thing in baseball with the Yankees, and I know he does it with the Nets, too, because I've heard him and been with him many times.
- 2:07:52I think it's just great to have Dom with the Yankees, and of course, the Islander fans, I'm sure, are very happy.
- 2:07:57Well, Phil, I'd like to wish you and the New York Yankees the best of luck, and I know that come October, we'll be bringing another championship home, an American League pennant.
- 2:08:05And we'd like to present you with a $25 gift certificate from Getty, the company that has just introduced Getty No-Led Gasoline.
- 2:08:12When you use Getty No-Led in your newer late-model automobile, the emission control system should stay cleaner, and that means your gas mileage should improve.
- 2:08:19Getty No-Led, Getty's newest way of giving you more for your money. Phil, we'll get together on the link sometime. Good luck this season, and it's been a pleasure.
- 2:08:26Thank you, Jim, very much.
- 2:08:27Third period action is next on New York Islander hockey. We'll be back in a moment.
- 2:08:31Have you heard about the unbelievable new car for 1975? It's the Pacer from AMC.
- 2:08:36Hi, this is Don Valentino, and when I say unbelievable, here's what I mean.
- 2:08:40Imagine a car that's wider than a Chevelle, smaller than a Vega, has more interior room, then cars a lot larger, looks a little like a second cousin to a porch,
- 2:08:49and has features that make it the most unusual car on the road today. Now you're just beginning to find out about the Pacer.
- 2:08:55And when you go to Manhattan, American, they'll show you how you can get a deal on this great car from AMC,
- 2:09:01how you can be dollars ahead of the game and get a car that delivers economy without sacrificing performance.
- 2:09:07Go on in and see the Pacer, test-drive the Pacer, and talk to Manhattan, American about dollars.
- 2:09:12If it's something extra you want in the way of a car, it's the Pacer.

- 2:09:20Mail call. Oh, there's lots of mail today, honey. Your magazine, my magazine, your bank statement, my bank talk statement.
- 2:09:29Still only paying $2.50 a month at European American?
- 2:09:32No.
- 2:09:33I knew it.
- 2:09:34Now I pay only $1.50.
- 2:09:36Yes, then you must be getting less.
- 2:09:37No, I still get unlimited checking, free personalized checks, a free safe deposit box, and lots more.
- 2:09:42Why, I even qualified for preferred long rates.
- 2:09:45All that for just $1.50? That's less than I pay for checks alone.
- 2:09:49It's new. I just keep our thousand dollars in a European American savings account.
- 2:09:53Our savings earn the highest interest of all hours.
- 2:09:56And you get bank pack for just $1.50 a month?
- 2:09:58Uh-huh. And if we kept as little as $500 in a European American savings account, I'd pay just $2 a month for bank pack and still get interest on our savings.
- 2:10:07Bank pack, less than $2.50 a month. Hey, maybe I should switch.
- 2:10:11Okay. You could.
- 2:10:14We've made a commitment to bring you better banking.
- 2:10:30The islanders leading three to nothing. We're ready to go now with the start of the third period.

- 2:12:43Up on the left wing to Howard. Right back to Saint Laurent.

- 2:12:49Andre has it knocked off his stick. And Greschner's got the puck.
- 2:12:52Beverly on the ice. Penalty now on the islanders.
- 2:12:56For tripping. And the official time on the penalty now
- 2:13:01is going to be one thirty-nine of the period.
- 2:13:06And let's get the official call and these are going to hurt.
- 2:13:10You just can't keep killing penalties all night. It's on Gary Howard.
- 2:13:14Let's pause fifteen seconds for station identification.
- 2:13:17The islanders lead three-nothing. This is New York Islanders hockey.

- 2:14:31Steve over forty goals this season.
- 2:14:33Getting himself set up again in the left corner.
- 2:14:35Middleton on the right corner.

- 2:15:46Well as Phil Rizzuto said during the second intermission.
- 2:15:49Billy Smith just been like a magnet there in the Rangers.
- 2:15:52In the island the goal.
- 2:15:53Every Ranger shot just seems to be targeted at Billy.
- 2:15:56He's used his body well.

- 2:16:38The Islanders lead 3-0.
- 2:16:39We'll be back in a moment.
- 2:16:40Ever wonder what makes Schaeffer the one beer to have when you're having more than one?
- 2:16:45One reason is more than one fermentation.
- 2:16:48Most brewers just ferment their beer once.
- 2:16:50But Schaeffer is fermented twice.
- 2:16:52Once to make it beer.
- 2:16:53And twice to make it Schaeffer.
- 2:16:55The one beer with flavor so fine it keeps shining through glass after frosty glass.
- 2:17:00More than one fermentation is one reason.
- 2:17:03But of course there's more than one reason behind the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 2:17:08The faceoff and Dennis Potman gets it into the Rangers' end.
- 2:17:13On the puck now, Jill Barrett.
- 2:17:15Both teams are at full strength.
- 2:17:17We've got 16 minutes to play in the game.
- 2:17:20Or in the third period we should say.
- 2:17:23Sudden death if it's tied up.
- 2:17:26Bob Bourne driven to the board.
- 2:17:28Gillies has the puck.
- 2:17:29He loses.

- 2:17:41Dennis has it.
- 2:17:42Dennis is a strong skater now.
- 2:17:43Starts to come back out.
- 2:17:45Dennis gets it out to center right.
- 2:17:46Billy Harris wanted to get it on the Islanders' side of the red line.
- 2:17:51Then let it go and he couldn't.
- 2:17:52It's in the Rangers' end.
- 2:17:53Kachuk's got it.
- 2:17:54Kachuk with it.
- 2:17:56He leaves the puck for Billy Fairburn.
- 2:17:58Fairburn with it at center right.
- 2:17:59Coming down the middle.
- 2:18:01Trying to split the defense.
- 2:18:02He does.
- 2:18:03Fairburn splits the defense and scores.
- 2:18:08And it's 3-1.
- 2:18:10The official time is 4.44 of the third period.
- 2:18:16Well, great goal by Billy Fairburn.
- 2:18:18Billy doing something to clock in.
- 2:18:20He did here in the Garden in the third period on Tuesday night.
- 2:18:24Just stepping right between the defensemen going in, pulling out Billy Smith,
- 2:18:27peeking him, throwing him to the ice, and sliding the puck around him.
- 2:18:30Great goal by Billy Fairburn.
- 2:18:32His third of the playoffs.
- 2:18:33Billy the all-time Ranger high scorer against the Islanders.
- 2:18:36And we've got a hockey game.
- 2:18:39And of course, Fairburn did what Clark Gillies did here Tuesday night.
- 2:18:44And Clark's goal won it 3-2.
- 2:18:46He split the defense.
- 2:18:48Fairburn now has 10 career goals against the Islanders.
- 2:18:53And this is going to perk up the Rangers, I'm sure.
- 2:18:57As we said, this game is far from over.
- 2:19:00On the draw, Dave Lewis to Bergmarschall.
- 2:19:03Berg with the puck, back to Lewis.
- 2:19:06Tips at it, Joe Baer's got it, Joe Druid takes it away.
- 2:19:09Joe, center-right, fires it in the Rangers' end.
- 2:19:12It rolls him back, Jackman stops it.
- 2:19:15Leaves it for Urban.
- 2:19:16Ted Urban comes out.
- 2:19:18Urban center-right, shoots it wide on the Islanders' net.
- 2:19:21Billy Smith waits for Vickers and clears it away.
- 2:19:24Centering pass taken by Parisi.
- 2:19:26J.P. coming back.
- 2:19:28He's got Park with him.
- 2:19:30J.P., the shot, scores!
- 2:19:32And it's 4-1.
- 2:19:34And now we have a wave off, no goal.
- 2:19:39And it's an offside ball.
- 2:19:42Oh man, that was a close one.
- 2:19:43As J.P. lets go, a flat shot.
- 2:19:45Now the Rangers fans are realizing, only now do they realize that it's no goal.
- 2:19:50The fans now just realizing there's no goal.
- 2:19:53It's offside.
- 2:19:56So it's a 3-1.
- 2:19:5814-42 to play in the third period.
- 2:20:02The draw taken by Nick Beverly in back of his own net.
- 2:20:05And of course these last minutes are going to be furious minutes.

- 2:23:18Dennis Potvan sends it around the board.
- 2:23:20Gillies after it.
- 2:23:21And he rolls it out to center-right.
- 2:23:23And we're under 12 minutes to play in the third period.
- 2:23:26Fairburn down the middle.
- 2:23:27The shot.
- 2:23:28And it is scooped up by Billy Smith.
- 2:23:30And he hangs out on the puck.
- 2:23:32And we'll have a face-off to the right of Billy and the Islanders' end.
- 2:23:35Bobby Bourne again came very close to making a very dangerous mistake.
- 2:23:39Bobby Bourne tried to pin the puck on the backboard.
- 2:23:42No Ranger was playing him.
- 2:23:43And if Bruce Hood wanted to be very, very technical,
- 2:23:46he could have called Bourne for two minutes for delay of the game.
- 2:23:49Bobby's going to have to sharpen up on that aspect of the game.
- 2:23:52All set now for the draw.
- 2:23:54To the right of Billy Smith and the Islanders' end.
- 2:23:563-1.
- 2:23:57The Islanders are leading.
- 2:23:58We've got 11.52 to go.
- 2:24:00Third period.
- 2:24:02Ready for the face-off to the right of Billy Smith.
- 2:24:05The Islanders now, right now, are trying to hang on.
- 2:24:07The Rangers are really pressing.
- 2:24:09On the draw.
- 2:24:11Burt Marshall around the board.
- 2:24:12Gary Howard there trying to get it out.
- 2:24:14And he does.
- 2:24:15Nick Beverly's got the puck for the Rangers.
- 2:24:17Taken by Saint Laurent.
- 2:24:19Andre coming in.
- 2:24:20The shot.
- 2:24:21A save by Jackaman.
- 2:24:22And the puck is collected by Sanderson.
- 2:24:24Up on the right wing to Middleton.
- 2:24:26Stolen by Saint Laurent.
- 2:24:28Andre coming back.
- 2:24:29Shoots it in the corner of Alexa Jackaman.
- 2:24:3111.5 to go on the third period.
- 2:24:33Beverly trying to get it out.
- 2:24:35Kept in by Dave Lewis.
- 2:24:37Brad Park fights for it.
- 2:24:39Nice from Gutted.
- 2:24:40Nice from Chicken At It.
- 2:24:42Moves it around Park.
- 2:24:43Nice from Left Point.
- 2:24:44Lewis.
- 2:24:45Lewis shoots.
- 2:24:46Deflected.
- 2:24:47Saint Laurent with it.
- 2:24:48Back to Lewis.
- 2:24:49Intercepted by Middleton.
- 2:24:50To Ted Urban.
- 2:24:51Urban coming across the line.
- 2:24:53Left wing.
- 2:24:54Urban with it.
- 2:24:55The shot.
- 2:24:56Deflected wide.
- 2:24:57Gary Howard after the puck.
- 2:24:58Gary trying to get it out.
- 2:24:59He can't.
- 2:25:00Brechner knocked down.
- 2:25:01The puck is still in the Islanders' end.
- 2:25:04And finally cleared by Lewis.
- 2:25:06And it'll be icing again on the Islanders.
- 2:25:09Base dog coming up to the left of Billy Smith.
- 2:25:11There's a break in the action.
- 2:25:12Three one Islanders will be back in a moment.
- 2:25:14If you're flying to Miami-Fort Lauderdale,
- 2:25:16you've got to believe Eastern can save you money.
- 2:25:18Eastern has six night coach flights to Miami-Fort Lauderdale.

- 2:25:41or call Eastern the wings of man.
- 2:25:47Ready now for the face-off for the left of Billy Smith.
- 2:25:49The New York Islanders leading three to one.
- 2:25:51They were coasting along, but the goal by Billy Fairburn for the Rangers was a big lift and a big goal.
- 2:25:57Three to one.
- 2:25:58Gary Hart trying to get it out.
- 2:26:00Kept in by Marat.
- 2:26:02Dennis Puttman's got it.
- 2:26:04And he goes down.
- 2:26:05Ratel after the puck.
- 2:26:07Jill Baer digging for it.
- 2:26:09And Dennis ends up on top of the puck.
- 2:26:12Now we're going to have a face-off coming up for the left of Billy Smith at the Islanders end.
- 2:26:17And now Marat goes over to say something to Bruce Hood.
- 2:26:20So does Jill Baer.
- 2:26:22They thought that Dennis moved it in under his body.
- 2:26:25Well, Don, after last night and some of the comments we made about the officiating,
- 2:26:29I spoke to Frank Ibarri today and I want to say right now that the NHL staff here tonight, Armstrong, Stampanello, and Bruce Hood are doing a great job.
- 2:26:37Excellent.
- 2:26:38They really have control of the game.
- 2:26:40On the draw, Gary Hart with it.
- 2:26:42Gary trying to come out.
- 2:26:44And he gets it out through center-right.
- 2:26:46Eddie Westpaw is on it.
- 2:26:47Eddie tees it up the shot wide.
- 2:26:49Parisi can't get a shot out coming out of the left wing.
- 2:26:52Hart sends it in the corner.
- 2:26:54Drew it out to the puck.
- 2:26:55Jill Baer trying to drag him down.
- 2:26:57They both fight for it.
- 2:26:58And the puck is still loose.
- 2:26:59After it is Drew it.
- 2:27:01And in after him is Marat.
- 2:27:02Around the board, Westpaw, centering pass.
- 2:27:04It's loose.
- 2:27:05Brechner's got it for the Rangers.
- 2:27:07He's in the corner of the right of his goaltender.
- 2:27:09Close in back of the net.
- 2:27:11Brechner holds the puck.
- 2:27:12Up on the right wing it goes to Ritell.
- 2:27:15Ritell with it.
- 2:27:16We're into 10 minutes to play in the third period.
- 2:27:18Ritell.
- 2:27:19To Marat.
- 2:27:20Back to Ritell.
- 2:27:21Jerry Hart there.
- 2:27:22Jerry gets it out to center-right.
- 2:27:24It's tipped by Westpaw.
- 2:27:25Into the Rangers end.
- 2:27:27On the puck Marat.
- 2:27:29Marat to Brechner.
- 2:27:30Up ahead it goes to Ritell.
- 2:27:32Ritell to Vickers.
- 2:27:33Vickers out to the puck in the corner.
- 2:27:35Centering pass.
- 2:27:36Brechner shoots up over the net.
- 2:27:38Gilly Smith didn't see it.
- 2:27:40And Ritell centering pass wide.
- 2:27:42Brewin' with it.
- 2:27:43Jude having trouble getting it out.
- 2:27:45Battle for that puck.
- 2:27:46Dicks flying out to center-right.
- 2:27:48And Gillies goes down.
- 2:27:50Brewin' it goes down.
- 2:27:52And the puck is taken to the Rangers line.
- 2:27:54By Marat to Brechner.
- 2:27:56Brechner with it.
- 2:27:57Down the middle he goes.
- 2:27:58To Kachuk.
- 2:27:59Right back to Ted Urban.
- 2:28:01Knocked away.
- 2:28:02The puck kept in by Urban.
- 2:28:04Dennis Plotman around the board.
- 2:28:05Sir Clark Gillies.
- 2:28:06Gillies goes down.
- 2:28:08The puck loosened back.
- 2:28:09Centering pass.
- 2:28:10Mothered by Billy Smith.
- 2:28:12And we've got a faceoff coming up.
- 2:28:14To the left of Billy.
- 2:28:15With 9-0.
- 2:28:16Two to go.
- 2:28:17Third period.
- 2:28:18Three-one islanders.
- 2:28:19Well after the goal by Fairburn, one might have expected the young islanders to panic a little bit.
- 2:28:23But I don't think I've seen any of that.
- 2:28:25I think the islanders have played very well.
- 2:28:27Dennis Plotman-Dum I think is playing the finest defensive game I've ever seen Dennis play with the islanders.
- 2:28:32He has two goals, but we've seen a lot of great offensive hockey from Dennis in his career.
- 2:28:37But I think Jerry Hart and Dennis Plotman are playing as a tandem the best defensive game I've ever seen them play.
- 2:28:42Of course Billy Smith is making them look good in the cage.
- 2:28:45All set to go now with a draw.
- 2:28:47To the left of Billy Smith.
- 2:28:49Nine minutes.
- 2:28:50A long way to go.
- 2:28:51The puck battle for Lewis trying to get it out. Fairburn keeps it in.
- 2:28:55Ted Urban after the puck.
- 2:28:57Urban goes down.
- 2:28:58Urban back on the puck.
- 2:29:00Centering pass blocked by Borg.
- 2:29:02Urban back on it.
- 2:29:03Urban centering pass across the mouth of the goal.
- 2:29:06Beveling to Kachuk the shot blocked by Lewis.
- 2:29:10Kachuk with it.
- 2:29:12Backhander to Fairburn.
- 2:29:14The shot blocked by Lewis.
- 2:29:15Lewis after the puck.
- 2:29:17Fairburn keeps it in.
- 2:29:18The Rangers are really pressing.
- 2:29:20Centering pass across the mouth of the goal.
- 2:29:22And the centering pass by Beverly is deflected by Billy Harris into the Islanders end.
- 2:29:28On the puck Brad Park.
- 2:29:30Park trying to come out of his own end.
- 2:29:32Goes cross-eye.
- 2:29:33Taken by Urban to Kachuk.
- 2:29:35Kachuk with it.
- 2:29:36Back of the right wing.
- 2:29:37Fairburn.
- 2:29:38Fairburn down the middle.
- 2:29:39Urban ridden off.
- 2:29:40Puck is loose.
- 2:29:41And trying to get it out is how it need to center-eye.
- 2:29:47And Billy Harris has a drop pass.
- 2:29:50Don LaRonde shoots the save by Chakaman.
- 2:29:537.55 to go third period.
- 2:29:56Sanderson with a puck and center-eye.
- 2:29:58He sends it in the Islanders end.
- 2:30:00And Andre Don LaRonde's got it.
- 2:30:02Spanked it off the boys to center-eye.
- 2:30:04Greshner on it.
- 2:30:05Greshner with a puck.
- 2:30:07Greshner to Polis coming down the middle.
- 2:30:09The Middleton.
- 2:30:10It slides in the corner of the right of Billy Smith.
- 2:30:13Polis after it.
- 2:30:15And after it also is Don LaRonde.
- 2:30:17It's loose.
- 2:30:18Digging for it now is Howitt.
- 2:30:20So is Hart.
- 2:30:21And Howitt's got it.
- 2:30:22And he shoots it right to Chakaman on goal.
- 2:30:25So there'll be no icing and Chakaman gets it back out to center-eye.
- 2:30:28And the puck is at center-eye.
- 2:30:30Taken by Middleton down the middle.
- 2:30:32Middleton down he goes.
- 2:30:35Finally on the Islanders.
- 2:30:38So the Rangers will have a man advantage the official time 12.47 of the third period.
- 2:30:46There's a break in the action.
- 2:30:47Three-one Islanders will be back in a moment.
- 2:30:49Just in case you've wondered why, Schaefer is the more than one beer beer.
- 2:30:53Just plain more experience is part of it.
- 2:30:55It takes experience to make any beer.
- 2:30:58But it's taken two centuries of brewing experience to make Schaefer.
- 2:31:02You see, more experience helps give Schaefer that special something more.
- 2:31:06That smooth, mellow flavor that keeps coming on beer after frosty beer.
- 2:31:11More experience is one reason.
- 2:31:13But of course there's more than one reason behind the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 2:31:20They start coming up to the left of Billy Smith and the Islanders and the Rangers now with a power play.
- 2:31:27And they've got one of the great ones.
- 2:31:29Warren Henning clears the puck.
- 2:31:31Eddie Chakaman stops it.
- 2:31:33On the puck now is Rod Jobert who can fly.
- 2:31:36He comes back to retell the Vickers left wing.
- 2:31:39Vickers with it.
- 2:31:40The back pass left point part.
- 2:31:42Park with a puck on the left wing to Vickers.
- 2:31:45In the slot, needs Jobert right wing, Middleton shoots.
- 2:31:48A save.
- 2:31:49And spat it into the crowd by Billy Smith.
- 2:31:51It's deflected up in the air.
- 2:31:53And like a baseball bat, he hit it just right and rammed it into the crowd.
- 2:31:58We'll try to keep you abreast of the clock as it winds down here, 6.47 to go in the game and 1.34 to go in the period.
- 2:32:05Of course the Islanders brought a three goal lead into the period.
- 2:32:08They've been really sitting on this lead playing excellent defense.
- 2:32:10And this could be the key point in the hockey game with the Rangers on the power play.
- 2:32:14Retell's done a great job on face-offs and here's a big one.
- 2:32:171.34 to go on the penalty.
- 2:32:19Eddie Westphal, John Retell.
- 2:32:21The puck down. It's in the corner.
- 2:32:23Did he let the Billy Smith?
- 2:32:25Lewis tied up and he tried to bank it off the glass and it goes into the crowd.
- 2:32:30So the face-off will be to the right of Billy Smith this time.
- 2:32:33And only four seconds was used up.
- 2:32:366.43 to go in the game. 3-1 Islanders.
- 2:32:39That was unfortunate as Lewis had an opportunity to clear the puck and ended up throwing it up in the crowd.
- 2:32:44Now they'll do it again.
- 2:32:46Ready now for the draw and back of the Islanders net.
- 2:32:48Lewis again fighting for it.
- 2:32:50It's loose.
- 2:32:51Back to the left point.
- 2:32:52Parked left wing.
- 2:32:53Vickers with it.
- 2:32:54Out front.
- 2:32:55Score!
- 2:32:57It's 3-2.
- 2:33:00It was kept in by Fairburn again.
- 2:33:04He's had two goals tonight and he has 11 career goals.
- 2:33:093-2. 6.33 to go.
- 2:33:12Third period.
- 2:33:13Well, we called it for you.
- 2:33:14It's just the way the Rangers have set up all their other goals.
- 2:33:17Billy Fairburn breaking down the crease and managing to deflect that puck high up in the net.
- 2:33:22Billy Smith's looking a little down right now as Jerry Hart goes back to talk to him.
- 2:33:266.33 to go in the game.
- 2:33:28The Rangers are coming on and the Islanders are going to have to really tighten up here in this hockey game.
- 2:33:34When one thinks back to the goal that was disallowed, the goal by JP Parisi, the fourth goal the Islanders would have had,
- 2:33:42but that was called back to the offside.
- 2:33:44It's got to be a big goal as the Ranger fans are now littering the ice with debris and we're going to have a delay here in the hockey game.
- 2:33:50Well, right now the Islanders are going to try to stem that momentum, that overused word that is so important.
- 2:34:00The official time of the goal is 13 minutes and 27 seconds of the third period.
- 2:34:07Fairburn's fourth goal of the playoff.
- 2:34:11He has had two games, two goals last night, two goals here tonight.
- 2:34:1611 career goals against the Islanders.
- 2:34:19On the draw, Nick Beverly, he goes to Brad Park.
- 2:34:22Vickers and Park get an assist.
- 2:34:25Park shoots to the Islanders and Billy Smith banks it off the board.
- 2:34:28Jill Baird keeps it in.
- 2:34:30To Ritale, outside, ball!
- 2:34:33Vickers ties it up.
- 2:34:36And it's all tied up 3-3.
- 2:34:39Well, you can see that one coming.
- 2:34:41The Rangers have everything going for them now.
- 2:34:43It's like the ice has a tilt in it as the garbage man kill wild.
- 2:34:47Steve Vickers scores again from the position where Vickers is always so dangerous right on the doorstep.
- 2:34:54As Ed Westwell obviously too good about hitting that puck with a high stick, which Jill Baird did.
- 2:35:00And now the Garden fans are simply littering the ice with all kinds of screeners as the hockey games have been tied up.
- 2:35:0713-41, the official time of the goal.
- 2:35:11Steve Vickers ties it up on a deflection.
- 2:35:14The Islanders have been trying to play the lead, and of course it's always risky when you do that,
- 2:35:19instead of keeping their own momentum going.
- 2:35:23Remember that if it ends up tied at the end of regulation time, we will go into sudden death overtime.
- 2:35:31There will be a winner tonight.
- 2:35:34down the feet.
- 2:35:35New York Rangers start to go into a shell now that they've tied it up, or they continue with this all-out assault on the Island Decade.
- 2:35:42Certainly Billy Smith cannot be faulted on any of the goals, all three coming right on the doorstep.
- 2:35:47A battle for the puck taken by Rattell to Jill Baird.
- 2:35:51Shoots to the Islanders end, Vickers after it, and it is icing on the Rangers.
- 2:35:56The puck will be brought back and we'll have a face-off in the New York Rangers end to the right of Eddie Jacobin.
- 2:36:03Well, John Rattell and Roger Baird get a first and John Rattell's some kind of hockey player in the clutch.
- 2:36:09Rangers coming in three goals down on the brink of oblivion. They battle back now and tie the score.
- 2:36:15Steve Vickers second of the playoff from Rattell and Jill Baird at 13-41.
- 2:36:21That's the equalizer at this moment.
- 2:36:24Jill Baird has the draw.
- 2:36:26Center right.
- 2:36:27Stopped at center right by Parisi.
- 2:36:29And JP backs him against the board.
- 2:36:32And Park moves in with drone, and we're going to have a face-off at center right.
- 2:36:38And of course the line that just did all the work gets a big hand from the crowd.
- 2:36:43Well, the Garden crowd is on F.D. standing as this line comes off and well they might.
- 2:36:47Just a tremendous effort by the Jill Baird, Rattell, Steve Vickers combination.
- 2:36:57The crowd now takes up a chance of Eddie for Ed Jacobin who came in in the second period replacing Jill Villamur.
- 2:37:04And has been equal to every shot down as a drone at him although in truth here in the third period,
- 2:37:09Downers have had very few shots on goal.
- 2:37:12Alright, we're ready to go. Bob Boyne, Walt Kachuk ready for the draw.
- 2:37:17Bruce Hood, the referee who's done an outstanding job handling the game.
- 2:37:22On the draw.
- 2:37:25Taken by Marat to his right, the Greshner.
- 2:37:28Up on the right wing it goes to Fairburn.
- 2:37:31To Kachuk, he's stopped and the puck is loose.
- 2:37:35The center right to Billy Harris. Billy coming in right wing.
- 2:37:39Billy shoots, knocked down by Jacobin.
- 2:37:42Centering pass to Gilley, Clark, sends it to the corner to the right of Jacobin.
- 2:37:47Marat's got it. Marat for the Rangers out to his own line to Kachuk.
- 2:37:51Walt Kachuk to Urban. Ken Urban has it knocked out of his stick.
- 2:37:55He stops at the left point area. The shot is saved by Smith.
- 2:37:58The Greshner's got it. He shoots and it's deflected wide.
- 2:38:03And in the corner to the right of Billy Smith.
- 2:38:05Burke Marshall sends it around the board.
- 2:38:07Fairburn's got it. He rolls it in back.
- 2:38:10Burke Marshall fires it around the board and Gilley clears it.
- 2:38:14And it goes to the full length of the ice.
- 2:38:17And it'll be icing on the Islanders.
- 2:38:19Face off to the left of Billy Smith and the Islanders end.
- 2:38:22Well that's not going to do it to the Islanders.
- 2:38:24Simply clearing the puck down the other end taking icing off.
- 2:38:27Brings the face off all the way back in the Islander end.
- 2:38:29The Islanders are going to have to do something that's very, very hard to do.
- 2:38:33Once they've lost their momentum, regenerate it, get it together,
- 2:38:36start clearing the puck as they did earlier in the hockey game,
- 2:38:39and start to assault Jacobin in the cage.
- 2:38:41Billy Harris had a good shot on goal and Jacobin came up big.
- 2:38:45Ready to have it a face off to the left of Billy Smith.
- 2:38:48Burke Marshall to Lewis to Howard and he clears it.
- 2:38:52Into the Rangers end. Nick Beverly on it.
- 2:38:55To Middleton behind him.
- 2:38:57Taken by Howlett to Nystrom.
- 2:38:59Bobby Nystrom to Howlett behind him.
- 2:39:01Knocked away. Park got it.
- 2:39:03Three on two. Park right wing.
- 2:39:06To Middleton. Middleton ridden off.
- 2:39:08Lewis has the puck. Lewis sends it around the board.
- 2:39:11And it is kept in by Pullis.
- 2:39:13In the back of the net Sanderson out front.
- 2:39:15Park backhander. Knocked down smothered by Billy Smith.
- 2:39:19Great save by Billy Smith.
- 2:39:22Raleigh Ranger point men.
- 2:39:28Have come all the way into the circle.
- 2:39:30Dom the Rangers are throwing caution to the wind.
- 2:39:32Their points have come all the way into the top of the circle.
- 2:39:35They're going all out here for the win.
- 2:39:38Well there's no tomorrow Jim. You gotta do it now.
- 2:39:41And of course this crowd has really come to life.
- 2:39:47Just a tremendous hockey game.
- 2:39:50Whoever wins it, it has been some kind of a game tonight.
- 2:39:53Well Mr. Magic, John Rattell is on for the Rangers so he's tough.
- 2:39:57Ready now for the draw.
- 2:39:59On the puck. Taken by Jerry Hart.
- 2:40:02Jerry to his right to West Ball.
- 2:40:04And he brings it out.
- 2:40:06And he's center-right.
- 2:40:07Shoots to the corner of the right of Jackaman.
- 2:40:09Eddie Jackaman moves it in back.
- 2:40:11Collected on the move by Joe Baer.
- 2:40:13He's coming right back. Center-right.
- 2:40:15His pass and center for Rattell. Wide of the mark.
- 2:40:18And Jerry Hart has it.
- 2:40:20Hart trying to knock it away.
- 2:40:22Deflect. Almost went on Vickers' stick.
- 2:40:24Up to Gruen.
- 2:40:26Jude loses to Hart.
- 2:40:28Back of the left wing. Vickers coming in.
- 2:40:30Vickers down the middle.
- 2:40:32And by Joe Baer.
- 2:40:34He's coming right back. Center-right.
- 2:40:36His pass and center for Rattell. Wide of the mark.
- 2:40:38And Jerry Hart has it.
- 2:40:40Hart trying to knock it away.
- 2:40:42Deflect. Almost went on Vickers' stick.
- 2:40:44Up to Gruen.
- 2:40:46Jude loses to Hart.
- 2:40:48Back of the left wing. Vickers coming in.
- 2:40:50Vickers down the middle.
- 2:40:52And the centering pass is deflected wide.
- 2:40:56And we got...
- 2:40:58Bruce Hood now rushing in there.
- 2:41:00As the puck is smothered by Billy Smith.
- 2:41:04Well, this is Stanley Cup action at its finest.
- 2:41:06End-to-end action.
- 2:41:08And if we can maintain our composure and our voices up here,
- 2:41:11we'll bring you the rest of this one because
- 2:41:13this is going to be a fight to the finish.
- 2:41:16Ready now for the draw.
- 2:41:18To the left of Billy Smith at the Islanders' end.
- 2:41:20The Islanders are tied with the Rangers.
- 2:41:223-3. The Islanders lead 3-0 coming into the period.
- 2:41:26The Rangers have caught the Islanders.
- 2:41:28Eddie Westfall. John Rattell.
- 2:41:30Eddie wins the draw.
- 2:41:32Taken by Jerry Hart. Moves it to the left of Billy Smith.
- 2:41:34Then his pot fans got it.
- 2:41:36In front of the net it goes to Jerry Hart.
- 2:41:38Out to his own line to Eddie Westfall.
- 2:41:40Eddie with it.
- 2:41:42The Red Line shoots it in. Stopped by Jacob and him back.
- 2:41:44He moves it away from Jude Druin.
- 2:41:46And the puck comes to center-right.
- 2:41:49Rattell has it.
- 2:41:51The Vickers across the line. Left wing, right wing.
- 2:41:53Joe Baer shoots. Up over the net.
- 2:41:55After the puck is Westfall.
- 2:41:57Eddie now.
- 2:41:59Cut in front of his own net.
- 2:42:01Off the left wing board.
- 2:42:02To Hart. Jerry Hart coming out.
- 2:42:04Jerry. Center-right. Hart.
- 2:42:06Rolls it to the Rangers' end.
- 2:42:08Joe Baer's got it. 3-0-5 to go.
- 2:42:10The Red Barriers. 3-3.
- 2:42:12To Vickers. Vickers at center-right.
- 2:42:14Vickers across the line. Left wing.
- 2:42:16On the right wing. Knocked away.
- 2:42:18Rattell back on it. His pass.
- 2:42:20And it is kept in. Taken by Marshall.
- 2:42:23Marshall up on the right wing. Billy Harris.
- 2:42:25Billy. Trying to move around.
- 2:42:27Beverly. Billy.
- 2:42:29Centering pass. Knocked away.
- 2:42:31Burt Marshall in from the right point. Trying to hold it in.
- 2:42:33And he can't.
- 2:42:35Kachuk's got it. Kachuk.
- 2:42:37To Beverly. Back to Kachuk.
- 2:42:39Billy. Knocked away.
- 2:42:41Kruechner on the puck. Knocked down.
- 2:42:43The crowd thought there should have been a penalty.
- 2:42:45And there isn't.
- 2:42:47And Clark Gillies clears it.
- 2:42:49And we got icing coming up on the Islanders.
- 2:42:53Let's pause 15 seconds for station identification.
- 2:42:563-3 the score.
- 2:42:58This is New York Islanders hockey.
- 2:43:02WMCA New York.
- 2:43:04Hello. This is Joan Hamburg.
- 2:43:06We can talk to each other every Monday through Friday from 10am to noon.
- 2:43:10Call me at 489-1155.
- 2:43:20The New York Nets went down to the beach tonight in St. Louis.
- 2:43:23113 to 108.
- 2:43:25Well St. Louis now leads the best of seven series.
- 2:43:29Two games to one.
- 2:43:31And the young spirits have come on strong.
- 2:43:36On the draw.
- 2:43:38Puck loose.
- 2:43:39Taken by Billy Harris.
- 2:43:41To Gillies off his skate.
- 2:43:43Marat's got it. Those cross eyes.
- 2:43:45Marat to Kruechner.
- 2:43:47Shoots in the Islanders end. Billy Smith is there.
- 2:43:49Leaves the puck for Lewis.
- 2:43:51Lewis and Kachuk now holding him up.
- 2:43:53Around the boards to board.
- 2:43:55Knocked away.
- 2:43:57Puck loose. In front.
- 2:43:59Deflected. Right across him. Out of the goal.
- 2:44:02Billy Harris has it. Billy coming back.
- 2:44:04Marat back with him.
- 2:44:06Billy is knocked down.
- 2:44:08And the puck is taken for the Rangers by Billy Fairburn.
- 2:44:12Fairburn center-right left wing urban.
- 2:44:15Urban trying to go around Burt Marshall.
- 2:44:17Burt rides him into the boards.
- 2:44:19He goes down.
- 2:44:20The puck kicked at.
- 2:44:22Burt Marshall after it.
- 2:44:23Trying to move the puck up to Billy Harris.
- 2:44:25He does. To center-right.
- 2:44:27And the board.
- 2:44:29Loses to Kruechner. Kruechner knocked down.
- 2:44:33Battle for that puck at center-right.
- 2:44:35We got a minute twenty to go. Third period to park.
- 2:44:38Poked by Burt Marshall.
- 2:44:40And it's back to the Rangers line.
- 2:44:42Steve Vickers on the puck. The Islanders change of the fly.
- 2:44:45Marshall to Parisi.
- 2:44:47Left wing ruined.
- 2:44:49Jules is knocked down.
- 2:44:52West ball after the puck.
- 2:44:54Vickers has it.
- 2:44:55Up on the left wing to Rachel.
- 2:44:57Rachel's cross-ice knocked down.
- 2:44:59Jill Baer down the middle.
- 2:45:01Drop pass. Vickers shoots.
- 2:45:03A save by Smith. And a beauty.
- 2:45:05Dennis Potbann's got it.
- 2:45:07He gets to the center-right.
- 2:45:08To Kruechner.
- 2:45:09Jules sends it to the Rangers end.
- 2:45:11Forty seconds to go in the third period.
- 2:45:14Back to center-right.
- 2:45:15Dennis Potbann to Jerry Hart.
- 2:45:17Hart to Parisi to Kruechner.
- 2:45:19The shot on the right wing.
- 2:45:21West ball.
- 2:45:22Eddie out front.
- 2:45:23Blocked.
- 2:45:24The puck is jammed against the boys.
- 2:45:26And we're going to have a faceoff with 32 seconds to go in the third period.
- 2:45:30Well, Donald, I have only one wish in this hockey game.
- 2:45:33And that wish being that the goal that decides this game be a good clean goal.
- 2:45:37I think these are two great clubs.
- 2:45:39They've battled evenly all year long.
- 2:45:41They both finished with 88 points.
- 2:45:43Here we come down to the final 32 seconds.
- 2:45:45One game apiece.
- 2:45:463-3 on the scoreboard.
- 2:45:48And I hope the goal that wins it is a beauty.
- 2:45:51Thirty-two seconds to go.
- 2:45:53Second period.
- 2:45:54Then we go into sudden death overtime if nobody scores in the next 32 seconds.
- 2:45:59Tremendous hockey action.
- 2:46:02This is one of the finest games I think I've ever seen or done.
- 2:46:05Just great.
- 2:46:06On the draw.
- 2:46:08Sondler on.
- 2:46:09Shoot.
- 2:46:10Saved by Chackabin.
- 2:46:11He pushes it in back.
- 2:46:13Brad Park's got it.
- 2:46:14Park up on the right wing to Sanderson.
- 2:46:16The Rangers rushing now.
- 2:46:17The shot is wider than that.
- 2:46:19Centering pass Butler.
- 2:46:21Sanderson on the right wing.
- 2:46:22Back to Park.
- 2:46:24Knocked away.
- 2:46:25Howitz got it.
- 2:46:26Gary bringing it out.
- 2:46:27To Nystrom.
- 2:46:28Seven seconds.
- 2:46:29Nystrom with it.
- 2:46:30Looses to Urban.
- 2:46:31Dennis Potman on it.
- 2:46:33Dennis left wing.
- 2:46:34Howitz with a puck.
- 2:46:36That's it.
- 2:46:37That's the end of the third period.
- 2:46:39And at the end of three full periods of play, it is 3-3.
- 2:46:43The people of Eastern believe they're going to make your next Eastern flight a great flight.
- 2:46:48Part of my job at Eastern is solving travel problems.
- 2:46:51If you've got one, call me.

- 2:47:03I'm going to do everything I can to give you a smooth flight.
- 2:47:06You've got to believe.
- 2:47:08Why is it good?
- 2:47:11If you're flying to Florida, Eastern can give you more than any other airline.

- 2:47:20Tampa, St. Petersburg, West Palm Beach, Sarasota, and Orlando, home of Walt Disney World,

- 2:47:29and save about 20 percent off the regular day coach airfare.

- 2:47:43We're in Madison Square Garden, where after three periods of regulation play,
- 2:47:47it's the New York Islanders three and the New York Rangers three.
- 2:47:50The New York Islanders came into the third period with a 3-0 lead,
- 2:47:54appeared to be coasting along fairly evenly when at 444, Bill Fairburn got his third goal of the playoffs from Kachuk and Greshner,
- 2:48:04and it was 3-1.
- 2:48:06That goal seemed to spark the Rangers, it certainly sparked the crowd,
- 2:48:10and the Rangers came back with Zim and Vigor.
- 2:48:13And shortly thereafter, Jerry Hart was penalized for hooking at 1247.
- 2:48:20The Ranger power play, which had been blunted during this hockey game,
- 2:48:24an outstanding power play during the playoffs and during the regular season, came to life.
- 2:48:29And at 1327, Bill Fairburn got his second consecutive goal, skating down at the goal mouth on assists from Vickers and Park, and it was 3-2.
- 2:48:41At that point, the crowd was roaring.
- 2:48:44It appeared only a matter of moments before the Rangers would tie it,
- 2:48:48and some 14 seconds later, at 1341, Steve Vickers scored again from the goal mouth.
- 2:48:55All three Ranger goals coming on fairly similar type plays, Fairburn's two and Vickers' third tying goal from Retell and Gilbert.
- 2:49:05Over the last six and a half minutes, the clubs battled with the Rangers getting perhaps the best chances,
- 2:49:10controlling the puck in the Islander end, Billy Smith being called upon time and time again to make saves to keep the Rangers off the board.
- 2:49:19To give you an idea about the third period and how one-sided it was, shots on goal, which are sometimes not indicative,
- 2:49:25but in this case, I think truly reflect the type of action we had, the New York Islanders managed only four shots on goal,
- 2:49:32and two of those four coming after the score had been tied.
- 2:49:37The Rangers, on the other hand, came up with 14 shots on goal, out shooting the Islanders 14 to 4, for a total of 40 shots on goal to the Islanders 24.
- 2:49:47Well, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the proceedings right now, the ice has been cleared, the Zamboni machine is on,
- 2:49:54we have a regular 15-minute intermission, in which time the ice will be cleaned, the players will be refreshed,
- 2:50:02and we will come out to play sudden death overtime, sudden death overtime, perhaps the most exciting moment in athletics,
- 2:50:10when it's two teams on the ice, knowing that the next goal determines the game, the winner moves on, the loser departs.
- 2:50:18Sitting up here with me, as he's been for most of the games during the playoffs, the voice of the Washington Capitals, Ron Weber.
- 2:50:25Ron, it's a pleasure to have you up here with us.
- 2:50:28Thank you, Jim, very much, a pleasure to be here, and boy, am I going to enjoy the fourth period, I haven't seen one, of course, all year,
- 2:50:34and the final score of this game is 4-3, or will be, and don't we wonder who it's going to be?
- 2:50:40Well, you know, Ron, being up in the Islanders playoff season, and of course, keeping close tabs on the Rangers as well,
- 2:50:47it's almost incredible to think that after 80 games in the regular season, the clubs end up 88 points apiece,
- 2:50:54after three games of Stanley Cup action, the clubs end up a game apiece, 3-3 here, and how close can you get?
- 2:51:01You know, and of course, I think more to the Islanders' credit, certainly the Rangers have more talent on their hockey club,
- 2:51:06and certainly they have a lot, lot more experience, not only experience in years, but experience in the playoffs.
- 2:51:12Ed Jockerman, I believe, is playing his 65th Stanley Cup game tonight, I don't know how many Billy Smiths have been in,
- 2:51:18but it can't be more than a handful, and I know for a fact, of course, Glenn Resch had not played any before Tuesday.
- 2:51:23Right. You know, while the Islanders had the three-goal lead, they had opportunities to put this game away.
- 2:51:28Andre Sanlaron hit the crossbar, Nystrom hit the goal post, and I guess the one that really had to hurt right after Fairburn had scored,
- 2:51:35upping the count to 3-1, the drawing Westfall-Perisi line, come over the blue line, and J.P. Perisi let go a flat shot,
- 2:51:42that beat Jockerman, and for an instant, it appeared as though the Islanders had taken a 4-1 lead.
- 2:51:47Yeah, I think the offside call was a good one, but it was awful, awful close,
- 2:51:50and I can see Islander partisans being visibly upset by that, no two ways about it.
- 2:51:55It is going to be too bad that one team, somewhere along tonight, or by early morning, is going to be out of this thing,
- 2:52:01because they both really deserve to continue the way they play.
- 2:52:03The Islanders were playing up to, I still have got to think, a better hockey club, and of course, the Rangers, from coming back,
- 2:52:10because they were certainly staring defeat in the place, and even the ignominy of a shutout on their own home ice in their last game of the season.
- 2:52:16Billy Smith was superb in the first period, I have not seen better goaltending over a 20-minute stretch in this entire season,
- 2:52:22any game that I have watched, and of course, I saw the Capitals play 80, and when I could, I took a busman's holiday,
- 2:52:27and I guess I picked up another dozen or so along the way.
- 2:52:30Fairburn, of course, with a couple of goals, a couple of nights running, is to be credited,
- 2:52:36and Vickers, who scored the tying goal, I think on a fluke, as I saw it, went off the blade of Dennis Plotman's stick,
- 2:52:43but nevertheless, he earned a point just before that when he centered a perfect one for Fairburn to block in.
- 2:52:50So, the Rangers have had their heroes, the Rangers have had to overcome a change in goaltenders, and they gave misconduct to Pete Stemkowski,
- 2:52:57and in fact, if the Rangers had not come back and tied this game, I think the onus might have been on Jockeman,
- 2:53:02who lost his temper at a very critical time when he slashed Gary Howlett repeatedly, and I think he was lucky that Howlett even went off at all.
- 2:53:10It could have been, the Rangers could have been shorthanded for four long minutes, as it was, he got the double minor to Jockeman,
- 2:53:16and Howlett, who showed restraint, which is unusual for him, got two, and really, a little different view could have let him get away scot-free,
- 2:53:26and certainly, Howlett would like to punch the Silver Fox back, but I think he was thinking what the score was and how important it was.
- 2:53:33Well, I commented on the air that last night we discussed the officiating at length, tonight I thought the officiating by Bruce Hood and his crew has been excellent,
- 2:53:40but on that particular play, as I saw it, I don't know how you saw it, Ron, Howlett actually lifted his hands up, almost in a pose of surrender,
- 2:53:48to avoid hitting Jockeman, and just backskated, absorbing a couple of shots from Eddie Jockeman.
- 2:53:53Yeah, I think at the same time, though, he was giving him a lot of lip, because it looked to me like all of a sudden, you can't look behind the mask, of course,
- 2:54:00but Jockeman jumped at him, and I think that Howlett was goading him, of course, if you can do that, that's to the player's credit,
- 2:54:07but although Howlett physically wasn't trying to enter in the thing, I think he was hoping Jockeman would come piling in at him,
- 2:54:14and after thinking that a goalie in a fight is rather rare, we've had two and two nights now, one for each side.
- 2:54:22I thought the turning point in the hockey game, Ron, in the third period was not the fair-baring goal,
- 2:54:27because the Islanders then killed about ten minutes of the period, and had a 3-1 lead with seven minutes to go.
- 2:54:33As soon as the call was made to Jerry Hart, I felt at that point, I said to Don Valentino,
- 2:54:38you just don't keep this power play off the board forever, I thought that was the turning point in the hockey game.
- 2:54:43I'd agree with you, and of course, that's the one Vickers made the fine center that Fairburn blocked in, and that gave him the impetus.
- 2:54:48You're right, Fairburn had scored, and Broken Smith shut out, but it didn't really seem like the Rangers,
- 2:54:53it didn't seem like the Islanders were rocked back by that at all, and it was still 3-1 their favor.
- 2:54:58In fact, Fairburn built that play, there were two assists handed out to Greshner and Kachuk at 4-44,
- 2:55:03but really Fairburn made that all the way down himself. He really soloed, and he sashayed down the middle.
- 2:55:07It was a fine individual effort, but I sometimes think an individual effort like that doesn't automatically spur a team on as much as some good team play would have been.
- 2:55:17Absolutely, I don't think Billy Smith could have been faulted on any of the goals.
- 2:55:20The Rangers seem to have a penchant for coming up with that goal at the goal mouth.
- 2:55:24I think Vickers and Fairburn are the two best at it, Ricky Middleton is pretty good as well.
- 2:55:28They just always have a guy on that power play at the corner, and that's where you get those goals.
- 2:55:33You know, talking about Middleton, I think you would have to agree with me.
- 2:55:36If Middleton had not had that serious injury, what, December, January, along in there, and missed a couple of months,
- 2:55:41I had to feel he'd have added at least a point to the Rangers' standings, and they would have finished ahead of the Islanders,
- 2:55:46because even now Middleton is only a spot player, and if he had not had that leg injury, he'd be a regular and a real scorer for them,
- 2:55:54where now he's not really been a factor in these playoffs.
- 2:55:57Well, I had the feeling early in the season that Rick Middleton perhaps had the inside track on the Rookie of the Year award.
- 2:56:02I think he has marvelous talent, tremendous shiftiness, he's a great skater, and he's certainly going to add to the Rangers' offense over the next season to come.
- 2:56:11Ryan, as I sit here thinking about this first Sudden Death overtime game, which we'll be witnessing,
- 2:56:16I stated with three minutes to go in the game, and I'll repeat it now, that I really have only one wish,
- 2:56:20that the goal of the side of this game not be a fluke, but be a clean goal, scored by one of two great teams.
- 2:56:27That's right. How long ago was it when you first thought, gee, I just hope sometime we get into an overtime,
- 2:56:32because then you knew the Isleman would be in the playoffs.
- 2:56:35It's something I'm, of course, looking forward to as a capital announcer, and I hope it isn't too many eons away.
- 2:56:40I want to broadcast an overtime game. Of course, I'd like to see them put it in in regular season type,
- 2:56:45not play all night, but play an extra ten minutes. That would cut the ties in half and a little bit better, probably.
- 2:56:51And I think it would be good, as to that old saying about, oh, well, both teams will just lay back in the overtime.
- 2:56:56Well, baloney, they'd do that in the third period of regular season games now, especially the visiting team.
- 2:57:01So it would just mean that old shell game would start a little later,
- 2:57:05because they know they would not only have to waste away the rest of the third period, but an extra ten minutes as well.
- 2:57:10So I wish they I was hoping. I think it's bad for hockey overall. The W.A.J. came into a into being.
- 2:57:17But I was hoping that maybe one good effect out of it was the NHL would start to be forced into reinstating an overtime,
- 2:57:23which they took out in 1940 something because of Second World War transportation problems.
- 2:57:28Well, you know, I couldn't agree with you more, Ron.
- 2:57:30I think that the one thing that expansion has done in creating new leagues in both the basketball group with the ABA and the AFL
- 2:57:38when it came into being in football and now the World Hockey League,
- 2:57:41I think it's the people who set up these leagues a little more progressive in their thinking because they really don't have an established product.
- 2:57:47And if you moved them to appeal to the fans, I think the game basically is set up for the fans.
- 2:57:52I know sometimes an overtime would be a little difficult for players and coaches,
- 2:57:55but I think the salary levels of business to such a degree and the fans are paying good money.
- 2:58:00And I think that we ought to be catering a little bit more to the fans.
- 2:58:02And I think the fans have definitely proven in the World Hockey League that they love the overtime.
- 2:58:07I can't think of a more thrilling moment in sports than a sudden death of overtime in any sport.
- 2:58:11You know, if I were a player and you're in your career, you're going to be an X number of overtime.
- 2:58:16You'll probably lose as many as you win. I wouldn't want to play an extra ten minutes either.
- 2:58:19It's a hard demanding sport. I'd rather just call it a tie and go home.
- 2:58:22But, you know, the fans want it and I think it's fair.
- 2:58:26Now, I'm not against ties in football.
- 2:58:28I'm against them putting in tiebreakers in the National Football League like they've done
- 2:58:32because a tie in a football game is a rarity, but it isn't in hockey where you have such a little scoring.
- 2:58:38Well, Ron, I want to thank you for kind of coming up here and pinch hitting.
- 2:58:42I think you've been an interesting guest. You have a good outlook on hockey.
- 2:58:44And I know that within the next few years, you know, this is the island's third season,
- 2:58:48so the Caps coming off a tough year, but their first year with a couple of good draft picks,
- 2:58:53like Jolly and a couple of more. I know the Caps will be right in it.
- 2:58:56But we'll be back with the overtime period when we return in a moment.
- 2:59:00Now, here's a word from the number one beer in New York.
- 2:59:20New York is full of landmarks. The Battery, Washington Square, Shea Stadium,
- 2:59:25and over on Kent Avenue in Brooklyn, there's another landmark, the Schaefer Brewery.
- 2:59:29Since 1842, there's always been a Schaefer Brewery in New York
- 2:59:33because New York has always liked Schaefer's way of tasting first beer good,
- 2:59:37beer after beer, year after year. Schaefer's a beer born and brewed right here in New York.
- 2:59:43It's New York's number one beer.
- 2:59:57Have you heard about the unbelievable new car for 1975? It's the Pacer from AMC.
- 3:00:03Hi, this is Don Valentino, and when I say unbelievable, here's what I mean.
- 3:00:07Imagine a car that's wider than a Chevelle, smaller than a Vega, has more interior room,
- 3:00:12then car's a lot larger, looks a little like a second cousin to a Porsche,
- 3:00:16and has features that make it the most unusual car on the road today.
- 3:00:19Now you're just beginning to find out about the Pacer.
- 3:00:22And when you go to Manhattan, American, they'll show you how you can get a deal
- 3:00:25on this great car from AMC, how you can be dollars ahead of the game
- 3:00:29and get a car that delivers economy without sacrificing performance.
- 3:00:33Go on in and see the Pacer. Test-ride the Pacer and talk to Manhattan, American about dollars.
- 3:00:38If it's something extra you want in the way of a car, it's the Pacer.
- 3:00:41For something extra in the way you'll save money and be treated, it's Manhattan.
- 3:00:48In case you're tuning in late, you've missed a whale of a hockey game.
- 3:00:55The score after three regulation periods of play is the New York Islanders 3 and the New York Rangers 3.
- 3:01:00The Rangers coming up with three goals in the third period to turn almost certain defeat into this tie situation.
- 3:01:07And sidelights for those of you who are interested in it, you know the Rangers and the New York Americans,
- 3:01:12the old, last time we've had a rivalry like that, last time they played in the playoffs was in 1937-38.
- 3:01:18And in a two game out of three series, the same as this, in the sixth period or the third overtime period of the last game,
- 3:01:24the New York Americans defeated the New York Rangers by the count of three to two.
- 3:01:28So whether or not history will repeat itself, we'll have to wait and see.
- 3:01:31And down it's been a whale of a game and a whale of a season.
- 3:01:35Both teams back out on the ice as we get ready now for the overtime sudden death.
- 3:01:43And of course, you always see that great praise about the ecstasy of victory and the agony of defeat.
- 3:01:53Well, you'll see it here tonight because the team that wins it will be very, very happy.
- 3:01:59The team that loses it, extremely dejected because when you lose it this way, so close, in overtime it'll always hurt.
- 3:02:09And Bruce Hood now says, let's go. Puts up his hand and he's ready to go.
- 3:02:14Players taking their final whirl in their respective ends of the ice.
- 3:02:18Well, the clock shows 20 minutes, just like a regulation period of time.
- 3:02:22The two teams have switched ends of the ranks, the same as if we were playing a four period game.
- 3:02:28The only difference of course being the first score will end this hockey game.
- 3:02:33And stay with us, we'll stay with you and it's going to be a great finish.
- 3:02:38Eddie Jackaman is on the 8th Street side of the Garden and Billy Smith on the 7th Avenue side.
- 3:02:478th Avenue and 7th Avenue.
- 3:02:49So Rizzotto said as a youngster growing up that meant a lot with the Avenue for him.
- 3:02:54Well, I hope that helps paint the picture for you.
- 3:02:57The draw taken by Lois Chuteson and the Rangers and Vickers after the puck.
- 3:03:02Vickers now loses, going, score!
- 3:03:05Oh, look at that, he's gone!
- 3:03:07J.J. Parisi has scored and the Islanders are going on in the playoffs.
- 3:03:12Holy mackerel, how about that? Holy cow, we're going on down.
- 3:03:17Look at that mob scene, they're just going out of their minds.
- 3:03:21Vickers going into the period, 1949 and the Islanders have done it, they're going on in a Stanley Cup.
- 3:03:28So I'm ready to jump out of the booth, holy cow!
- 3:03:32How about that? As Phil would say, holy cow.
- 3:03:38The Islanders win it and they go in now to the next round.
- 3:03:45And the Rangers in true professional style come on and congratulate the Islanders.
- 3:03:54You know there's Gary Howe and Eddie Jackman, took a little extra time to say thank you and wish the best for a couple of class guys.
- 3:04:02So the Islanders go on now and we'll see who they'll play when we find out who wins between Toronto and Los Angeles.
- 3:04:09I watched this ceremony with Bill Villamur and Billy Smith and my happiness here for the Islanders, I can't help feeling sorry for the Rangers and Emile Francis.
- 3:04:18Just a great club, Emile Clance walks over to Al Arbor, shakes his hand and heads to the locker room.
- 3:04:24Just a great game, two great clubs and I'm sorry that this had to happen. But look at the elation on the Islanders.
- 3:04:30Ralph Stewart who did not dress tonight is out on the ice in his street clothes and we're glad to see that.
- 3:04:37Ralph of course contributed during the season. The Islanders now skate off, they've won it, they've defeated the Rangers.
- 3:04:44It's almost unbelievable as the Islanders in their third season, you know Jim this is the third straight victory for the Islanders here at Madison Square Garden.
- 3:04:55This is just incredible because the Islanders an expansion club, third season and they've been able to do it all here tonight.
- 3:05:03Some of the courage of Al Arbor has to be mentioned. Al Arbor went with Billy Smith on the net when many experts would have faulted him.
- 3:05:09I thought Billy Smith was outstanding tonight and I want to commend Al Arbor for having the guts and the courage of his convictions to go with Billy Smith in this game here tonight.
- 3:05:18J.P. Parisi who became the folk hero at the Coliseum, second goal of the playoff from Jude Bruin and how that combination helped and you look back at that trade that was so important at 11 seconds.
- 3:05:36And that's the end of the game with a final score the New York Islanders 4 and the New York Rangers 3.

- 3:06:49Tied it up and in the first overtime the Islanders win it at 11 seconds. First time on the Rangers end J.P. Parisi the tip in on the centering pass by Jude Bruin.
- 3:07:01The summary of the hockey game. Clark Gillies made it one and nothing in the first period. At 16 minutes of the period his second playoff goal from Bob Warren, Burt Marshall.
- 3:07:12That's how the period ended. In the second period Dennis Potman took over. He picked up a power play goal. His first goal of the playoff was from John Potman, Bob Nice from at 8.26.
- 3:07:22And then a short handed goal by Dennis Potman. His second of the playoff, second of the period from Lorne Henning at 12.51 and it was three to nothing Islanders.
- 3:07:31Nuts to be denied. The New York Rangers came roaring back. Billy Fairburn who is the all time career leader in goals against the Islanders scored two in a row.
- 3:07:42His third of the playoff from Walt Kachuk, Ron Gressler at 4.44 and then Billy Fairburn a power play goal his fourth of the playoff and his 11th goal career wise against the Islanders from Vickers and Parker at 13.27.
- 3:07:58And then Steve Vickers tied it up 3-3 his second playoff goal from John Rattell, Raj O'Bear at 13.41 and it was 3-3.
- 3:08:08And then under the first overtime, J.P. Parisi the tip in on the centering pass by Jude Druin at 11 seconds and the Islanders won it 4-3.

- 3:08:34Bill Chadwick who just showed a great field of class. Bill just walked over and congratulated Dom and I and wished us good luck the rest of the way. I think that's nice of Bill Chadwick. He's a class guy.
- 3:08:44Well you'd expect it from Bill who was a great official, elected to the Hall of Fame and certainly appreciate what he said and of course a New York team now in that quarterfinal round and I hope they do go all the way.
- 3:08:58Jim?
- 3:08:59You're kind of beat buddy. Thank you very much and we'll see you wherever the next round is.
- 3:09:04Dom I'm looking forward to it. It's always a pleasure and for the Islander fans it's been a wait, not a long one, a short one and who knows what's next, maybe the world.
- 3:09:13Alright the final score for the final time the New York Islanders win it, show up on the scoreboard for three at 11 seconds of the first overtime, J.P. Parisi and it came from drawing.
