[upbeat rock music] Good evening, everybody.
• 0:14
What does, uh, what does that say, number on the, on the sh- we have show notes today. First time, I think. It is totally the first time. 25. 25. 25th episode of the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast. Yes. Yes.
• 0:27
Now you can, uh... Oh, wait, your, some indiscretions are wiped when you're 25 years old. Is that right? Something like that. I didn't have any indiscretions. I'm that cool. Youthful indiscretions. Youthful? Yeah.
• 0:39
Indiscretions. I was a good kid. Catholic school. That's not a legal thing though, right? Just a karma thing or- No, no. No, like anything that you had as a minor, I- Huh. [laughs] Wait, I'm telling too much. Yeah.
• 0:53
[laughs] It's been a while since you turned 25. Happy belated birthday. Oh, thank you. JK's birthday, what, uh, Monday? Yep. 9-9. Monday. 9-9- 9. 9-9. 9. 19. Prime, prime number, I guess. Palindrome.
• 1:09
Some mathematician told me that. That was all prime numbers that day. I, palindrome, prime. 9-9-7-2. 7 and 2 is 9. Rare. Oh. Just saying. And 9-9-19. Well. Also. 9:18 at night. One of the days nine, so, woo.
• 1:25
[laughs] All right. Spooky. All right, let's get this thing started. All right. All right, enough about me. Enough about everybody. Let's talk about you. Let's talk- Yeah. [laughs] So what'd you do?
• 1:34
What'd you guys do this past weekend? [laughs] Did you go for any rides anywhere? Oh my, yes. The Steel is Real. And what number was that, oh, by the way? Uh, I'm thinking 12-ish, possibly. Speaking of Steel is Real.
• 1:49
Oh, boy. All for the love of Pete. [laughs] [laughs] A little Zito or Kenny leftover? Oh. Oh, yes. [laughs] I used all mine up. The pops that go poppy pop. Yeah. I, it, it turned out really well.
• 2:07
I was, uh, pleasantly surprised, A, by the weather. It was fantastic. Oh, it was so nice. Oh, yes. So nice. Probably one of the best cycling days of the year for me weather-wise.
• 2:16
My, my wife mentioned the next morning that she was a little sunburned. Huh? Which was unexpected- Oh, yeah... and very delightful. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. Um, I don't know. I'm s- thinking 70-ish riders, give or take.
• 2:29
I think that's a good- In there... good, an approximation... somewhere. Exact- yeah. Plus and minus. Yeah. I think we picked up a couple. Yeah, my- Yeah... my first year at the helm. You did great.
• 2:39
Cheers to your job at the helm. Cheers to the helm. Yeah. Right on, right on. So folks, this is gonna be a early September ride going forward.
• 2:47
Steel is Real celebrating steel-framed bicycles, not necessarily just road bikes. No. Exactly. You might have a little tiny bike that hurted your hinder quite a bit after- [laughs]... 21 miles. And really- I would...
• 3:00
Oh, I gotta make- And don't, and don't freak out if you have alu- Aluminum Just ride your bike. Right, well- You know. It's a good, just a fun little bike.
• 3:07
Aluminum, aluminum or any titanium or carbon people are welcome to ride the ride, just not get judged. Right. Unless you be judged- Or judged, or be judged more... you must have steel. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Differently.
• 3:18
We need a pic- [laughs] Differently. [laughs] I should be able to find a photo of your, uh, Moutain somewhere, shouldn't I? I'm certain you can find several photos of...
• 3:26
Like, for example, when we were at the, uh, Irish pub when I found out I in fact had a kickstand. Mm-hmm. That was pure genius. Yeah, for real. Yeah, that thing looked sort of like a lever to fold- I, yep, yep...
• 3:36
the bike up or something. I'm gonna shout out to Scanlon for that one. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we were looking. He's like, "That's the longest kickstand I've ever seen." I'm like, "That's not a kickstand."
• 3:44
And he grabs it and folds it down. I'm like, [gasps] "Oh my God, it's a kickstand." [laughs] "I'm a moron." You knew the baskets were baskets though, right? I did know the... Oh, I forgot to bring [laughs] the PA back.
• 3:53
Yes, I did know the baskets, 'cause it carried my, my, your megaphone. Your entertainment. Which I used a lot. [laughs] Well, you've got an official job now next year. Yeah.
• 4:03
And I'd like to take this time to say you're all beautiful, except Chris. [laughs] Okay. He'll get that. [laughs] And keep the PA out of Kenny's hands. Y- uh, in my ears. Right. That's- Yeah. That was- Yeah...
• 4:16
the next moment. Yeah. [laughs] All is well in the world, but- When you light up as many fireworks as Kenny does, you probably have no hearing left. [laughs] What? Exactly. Oh, yeah.
• 4:28
You saw that, that picture of doing, uh, when, when he asked for the, uh, stickers to affix the bottle rocket to the plane. Oh, right, right, right. [laughs] Yes, the aeronautical engineering.
• 4:39
I told him the center of gravity was off on it and it wouldn't fly. It didn't. I was inside when- It was awesome... [clears throat] I heard it, but I didn't see it.
• 4:45
No, it just went up in the air, on the ground, and exploded. [laughs] That's how all bottle rocket airplanes should be. Yeah, pretty much.
• 4:54
I don't think the thrust-to-weight ratio was high enough for its weight, you know. But the zest was there. Yeah. I was like- Yeah... yeah, yeah, yeah. I got- Yep, more power to experimental aircraft people like Kenny.
• 5:06
[laughs] So- No, that was, that was a fun time. It, well, and the derby took an unexpected turn. Just as it was organically going, for whatever reason, it just went around this light pole. Right.
• 5:22
[laughs] And I'm like- Yeah... I was like, "I'm gonna peel out of this one," 'cause [laughs] Well, it made it sort of a, you know- Danger course. It was fun though. Yeah. What was it, uh, Zito was in on the pedal?
• 5:33
Yeah, was Zito in a, um, I, uh, one of, definitely a bike pole- Yep, on a t- Definitely, definitely... on a fixed gear... definitely. Yeah. Yeah. He knew his- He was the guy riding the wheelies too, wasn't he?
• 5:46
I believe so. Yeah. Yeah, he's pretty good. Guy's got some skills. Kind of thick gear wheelie guy. Yeah. He rides one-handed down the street quite a bit.
• 5:52
I think he's the guy that cyclocrosses on a fixed gear too and does jumps on 'em and stuff. [laughs] Show off. Right? Yeah, but it was a, yeah. We had a good crowd. Everybody was cool.
• 6:04
The stops were awesome The stops were fantastic Quick, quick shout-out for those local folks. Uh, Cafe Hollander on Downer, uh, the Palapa at St. Paul Fish Market- Yep... the Valley Inn- Valley Inn was fantastic...
• 6:17
where lunch was had by most. Yes. McKeirnan's. It was a new stop for this ride, but we've- Which-... used it as an overflow for some other [laughs] rides at some- Which may be a stop next year- Yeah...
• 6:27
for food, 'cause that food- Yeah... looked pretty good. It was good. Yeah. They have a- What was it, Big Boy Burger? Big Boy Burger for, like, five bucks on Saturdays. Wow. Yeah, yeah. It was tasty.
• 6:35
And that's the, uh, sister bar of Barnacle Buds. Right. Yeah, someone said that. You said that, as a matter of fact. Yeah. Then we went to, uh- I- if I'm paraphrasing myself- [laughs]... I, I do believe I said that.
• 6:44
[laughs] Then we took a stroll through the Forest Home Cemetery- Oh... which was, or is, where many of the famous Milwaukeeans of your olden day types are, um, permanently enshrined and/or buried,
• 6:59
including Valentine Blatz and the Schlitz boys, which is where we paid homage to them. Indeed, indeed. We had to stop at, uh, Liquor, Beer, and Wine or- Oh, yeah. Oh.
• 7:11
Yeah, that's usually just one or two people stopping, but the whole ride stopped there. I'm like, "It isn't that great a s- And-... spot to stop, really"... and if we're gonna sh- Traffic flow was...
• 7:18
if we're gonna throw out, we have to throw a thanks out to Jordan for that killer rack he built for Molly so she could carry that 30-pack of beer- That was-... without effort... with beautiful. Fit perfectly.
• 7:28
It was like magic. Fit perfectly. [laughs] And we went to, uh, Holler House, which has the oldest sanctioned bowling alley in the United States of 'murica. Yep.
• 7:37
Speaking of the United States of 'murica- And I had, I had, yep- Did you forget?... two gutter balls. Yeah. [laughs] One to the left and one to the right. Sweet. Nice.
• 7:44
You could've rolled more lines, man, or whatever they call them. Well, well- Frames. Yeah, but- Done more lines, rolled more frames, and what have you... it's like, "No, take your shoes off. No, keep your shoes on."
• 7:54
And- Don't slide on your butt. That's not good... I'm like, "This is not how I bowl." So, I don't know how long it's been continuously operating, but somewhere around 1909 or somewhere in there. Mm-hmm.
• 8:03
And they still have a pin monkey in the back. His name is Gunther. Gunther? Gunther. He was very spry, because there was some not- It was incredible... yeah, there, some, especially Dave. [laughs] That was just, um,
• 8:20
you know, your bowling etiquette. I don't know how many people have actually bowled, but there is some sort of etiquette for bowling. That Dave clearly doesn't know. Which doesn't really apply to [laughs]
• 8:28
Steel Is Real rides. And then, even though we didn't get to stop there, um, thanks to the Keggle's wedding, uh- [laughs]... Enlightened Brewery, I wa- uh, so I talked to- We'll get a flyby... yeah, I talked to Tommy.
• 8:41
He's just one of the owners of Enlightened, and the tap room is still the tap room, too. So, they have that other location. Um, so instead of- Oh, I didn't know that...
• 8:52
doing that, we went to the Polka Riot, which was a riot. Hell, yeah. It was great. Polka music. Well, pol- it's more- Beetle Infused, we got there for... yep... and then, uh, kind of- Kind of rap... rap, rap infused...
• 9:03
rap polka. Yeah, it was- Rap infused polka... November Criminals. That was a good band. Yeah. Those guys are cool. And the one before is Sergeant, uh, Mustard something. Something's Lonely Polka Band. Yeah. It was great.
• 9:16
They were fantastic. They're, they're an entertaining bit. I, I'm 96% sure we'll have that as the final stop next year on the Steel Is Real ride. I've been trying to get with Evan to make sure we're
• 9:29
coordinating on the date. Yeah. Because it is- But believe, what-... that early September timeline.
• 9:33
'Cause otherwise, all these bands that were at this thing are booked through Oktoberfest doing their polka- Sure, sure... for money. Well- Real money... last year's ride, it ended at the Palapa, and then we,
• 9:47
"Okay, whatever. Oh, hey, polka riot's going on." So, had to double back and go, which is, uh- I remember doing that. Yeah. Yep. [laughs] I'm like, "Oh, this is awesome."
• 9:55
So, this year the non-doubling back was, uh, going to see James. Um, our buddy James was on the ride, and, uh, later at, in the evening night, his band did a show at a local bar. We went to see him. Yeah, it was funny.
• 10:09
He, he, he was always threatening to peel off during the ride, and I'm like, "Well, it's kind of a rhythm here." Mm-hmm. You kinda, you know, you're gonna kinda go against your own rhythm here if you try to peel off now.
• 10:24
It's just gonna work out. [laughs] Yeah, it'll all be fine, man. Get his cranks fixed. Well- Oh, yeah... he's just got a, all he needs is a wave washer that he- Right... lost one day somewhere along the way.
• 10:34
I've got the bolt right here in the drawer- Oh, the wave... waiting for him. Somewhere along the wave. [burps] Nice. Oh, excuse me. That was kinda pig-like. Oh. [snorts] What happened there?
• 10:46
What makes the little piggy make noise? So, uh, Steel Is Real, folks. If you can make it next year- Where'd it go?... I would, I'd make it. It's on there? [laughs] Uh, tomfoolery in the s- [laughs]...
• 11:01
in the studio here, folks. This just in: JK dies before the next show. [laughs] Smells like dungeon and thimbles. Seriously, we don't know how. [laughs] Yeah, man. Bitch. So, uh, I ordered another Chumba. Ah.
• 11:16
Is it titanium, by chance? It is. It's their new- Titanium... the, the 2020 version of their Stella, which is their- Stella. Stella... sort of, it's a multipurpose thing.
• 11:25
It's their cr- they call it their cross-country race rig, but a lot of people use it for bike packing and general riding around. And they had a really decent deal, so I said, "Yeah, man, I need me one of them."
• 11:37
What, are you having a heart attack over there? Well, he, it bounced up and hit me in the chest. I think I'm dying. [laughs] Was it the packing, like, the gravel that's inside of it? Probably. Am I bleeding?
• 11:47
[laughs] Fucker. [laughs] Talk amongst yourselves while- Fucker... I kick JK in the nads. [laughs] So- The joyfulness is gone after the Steel Is R- well, I was keeping it all in- Oh... in spirit. Oh.
• 12:03
And that was totally in spirit. What else did we get new? [laughs] What else did we get new in this shop in the last couple of weeks? I got all those bags from, uh, Sturdy. Oh, those are nice. Joe made that.
• 12:12
Do you see the, uh- Custom Sturdy bags... the frame bag on the Chumba there? It turned out real nice. The colors are really nice. Oh, nice. They go with the Chumba very well.
• 12:19
It's such a small triangle there that- Yeah... that was nice to fit that in there, and it's very useful. More so than what I was trying to jam in there before, which didn't really fit Right, right.
• 12:28
I like the front pouchy bag, too, you got on the- Pouchy bag, top tube bag- Yeah... sturdy. Those were like 55 bucks. I think they're really nice.
• 12:36
Looks totally waterproof, too, with that seam-sealed zipper thing and- Totally do We should, you should head out in the rain like we did today. Oh, wait, only I got wet today, 'cause JK's cooler than me.
• 12:46
Yeah, I dance between the raindrops. Got a light, a light- All right, just look at the-... little bit, but I didn't get soaked. Yeah. It was a mist tent on the way here. Nice. I'll just say that.
• 12:58
I know it was enough to keep Dave from riding down from Tosa to join us on the show today. Ah. Hi, Dave. Dave'll be here next week, probably. He may be here in spirit later. Maybe. You never know.
• 13:10
Which Dave are we talking about? Speaking of spirits. Schlavala. Oh, Schlavala. Speaking- I thought you were talking about Lunz. [laughs] Speaking, speaking of Daves. Ahoy, hoy. Is this thing on?
• 13:21
[laughs] Speak of the devil, he shall appear. Can you hear me screaming? Right? We said his [laughs] I think we said his name, his name three times- Three times... and he called. Hi, Dave. There you go.
• 13:31
That's- Are your heads spinning? Yeah, kind of, 'cause JK's been throwing poppers at, uh, Tony. [laughs] Now it smells like gunpowder in the shop. Oh, yeah? [laughs] Yeah. A couple left over from Steel Israel.
• 13:45
Yeah, there was a few flying around for that event. Yeah. As always. [laughs] Whoever shot the bottle rocket- But-... that just missed the lady who was unloading her truck, and she was clearly not happy. Clearly.
• 13:57
That's... Where was that? Out in the world. I don't know. I gotta put a designation on it. And we, we were heading to- Yeah, we gotta put a pin in the map where it was. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Off-camera. Brr.
• 14:06
Yeah, it- Beep... I seem to remember something about that, but- [laughs] Yeah, we were just past Miller's Stadium, heading our way south, and I don't know who thought that was a good idea.
• 14:17
JK's like, "Oh-" Oh, I was in the, I was in the, I was leading the ride, so I have no idea- Yeah... what you're talking about. Yeah, he was way behind you. JK living. It sounds, sounds like a Beetle idea. I don't know.
• 14:26
[laughs] Yeah, exactly. Well, he handed out all of his bottle rockets to random people so then he could just not claim he did it. Good call. Because that is- There you go. Yeah. Grandpa tickles, you bitch.
• 14:37
[laughs] Good strategy. So for those of you that don't recognize the, uh, call-in guest today, it's, uh, mrdavelunz.com. Non-profit. [laughs] I just, I, I wanted to...
• 14:49
I hadn't really heard- That's not the way I planned it. [laughs] You should be davelunz.org if you're not gonna make any money at this. [laughs] Um, I asked if- Yeah, davelunz.com has a better ring to it.
• 15:02
[laughs] Yeah, just like kim.com. Kim.com. Internet mogul. Is he in prison yet or- I don't know... anything? I think he was extradited. I don't know if he's actually in prison. On Hulu. On Hulu. Oh, just a- [laughs]...
• 15:15
just a internet- Guy that made a lot of money and changes, changed his own name to kim.com. Yep. So you could legally change your name to lunz.com probably. Yeah, we were trying to get a- I probably could Probably...
• 15:28
in old, uh, New Rock days, trying to get, uh, the new morning show host. It's like, "No, just keep your name. No, your name w- will be joanne.com." And it went- That was it.
• 15:41
Yeah, it was the dawn of the internet at the time. Dawn. Oh. Was that like '94 or 5, somewhere in there? Yeah. About then. Uh, no, this would've been- In, way-... like '97... in the last century. '97 to 8.
• 15:52
I heard the internet's on computers now. So I asked- I don't know... Mr. Dave- I heard the internet is just a fad. Yeah. Yeah. [laughs] That allows us to talk to you about Copper Harbor, though.
• 16:01
That's why I said, Dave, we hadn't really heard about- Copper... Copper Harbor Fest. What, uh, happened up there that was- Oh, yeah, Copper Harbor. [laughs] I can fill in, uh, a little bit that I remember, but, you know.
• 16:13
[laughs] I heard whiskey was involved. Rye whiskey. So we were... Oh, yeah, there was some, uh, Bulleit Bourbon drinking. Is that bourbon or is that rye whiskey? Oh, I thought you told me you had some- Well-...
• 16:24
rye bourbon... was it orange or green? Yeah. Ah. It was orange. Then orange is B- is Bulleit Bourbon. Is, is Bulleit Bourbon. Green is rye. The, the, yeah, the rye is the green label. Yeah.
• 16:33
And what- Remind me not to drink that stuff anymore. [laughs] And the white is the 10-year-old aged. Ooh, that's the good stuff. Just delicious. Oh, we didn't have that. That sounds smooth. Ah, it is. Oh, yeah.
• 16:43
But yeah, Voldemort, uh, gave me some of that one night. I think it was Saturday night, and I, I had a horrible time getting back to camp. [laughs] I broke, I bent a derailleur hanger, so, you know. Oh.
• 16:55
Good thing I got four now. [laughs] Inevitable, the derailleur hanger bomb. You should probably just buy your- Yeah... derailleur hangers in six-packs. Yeah, I got four.
• 17:06
I b- I, I ordered two for Greg, but he might just get one now, 'cause [laughs] that would leave me with two backups, so. But yeah, I, I order them in bulk. [laughs] Right on. So did you- That's it...
• 17:19
did you break your record? Yeah. Did you break your beer record or not? No, we fell short. Uh, 103 this year, about 113 as of last year. Probably the Bulleit helped you.
• 17:31
Um, I'm pretty sure that had a lot to do with me not drinking, um, most of the day Sunday 'cause of Saturday night. 'Cause I could've easily put away a 12-pack that Sunday if I didn't go pride up, uh, Saturday night. Um,
• 17:46
so yeah, whatever. [laughs] We still had a good time. Whatever. Whatever. Thanks. So what, what kind of stuff did you be s- I, I, so I- What kind of stuff did you do? What's that? Like what did you do?
• 17:59
Ride trails and drink beer? Is that pretty much what happened? Um, a little bit. Yeah, pretty much. Uh, we left, we left Wednesday morning. We spent Wednesday night, all day Thursday, and we left Friday morning.
• 18:14
We were, uh, we were in Marquette, and then we headed up to Copper Harbor on, uh, Friday. Copper Harbor.
• 18:22
Um, unfortunately it rained on Thursday, so we spent the whole day in the bar with, uh- My ironworker brother out there [laughs] Oh. [laughs] You're gonna, you're gonna melt Ironworkers are easily sidetracked by bars.
• 18:34
[laughs] True that. Um, so we didn't ride it all in Marquette. We didn't ride in Houghton, which we usually do. Uh, we just went straight to Keweenaw Brewing Company, where I spent $75 on this wicked cool jersey.
• 18:50
[laughs] Ugh. So, da- And, um- Is it a, is it a, is it a part of a kit? And, and one carbon- Kit and carbon? Kit. You gonna go carbon now?
• 18:56
No, they didn't, uh, they didn't have matching shorts unfortunately, so I couldn't get the kit, which I guess I'm not too bent out of shape about, but, you know, whatever. Is the price tag still on it?
• 19:06
'Cause they were charging another 50 bucks for their shorts. Price tag hasn't been ripped off by, uh- But the, uh, jersey's really cool. They have, um... What's that? The price tag still on it so you can return it?
• 19:17
I know that didn't work out one time. No. Actually, um, well, I actually got it bloodied that Saturday night in my accident, 'cause I was wearing it. And, um, I'm like, "Wow, okay, cool."
• 19:27
You know, first night wearing it, I already got blood on it, so that works. [laughs] Um, but that washed out luckily. My now. [laughs] Yeah. Can't return it now. [laughs] But it's really cool.
• 19:40
It's got, uh, there's a lift bridge in Houghton, um, I forget what the waterway is called, but it's really wicked, like an old, you know, steel structure lift bridge, and that's on the jersey.
• 19:50
So I had to buy it, you know. Again, it was kinda green too, so you know. Green. It really was speaking to me. [laughs] Yeah. Um, so we stopped there, and then, um,
• 20:03
we usually ride the Houghton Tech trails, do like a quick lap on that, and, um, we were kinda running out of time 'cause we got a little sluggish start Friday morning, so we didn't even ride there.
• 20:16
And then, uh, we made it up to Copper Harbor, uh, I don't know, 5-ish, whatever. Uh, set up camp and just started partying up there. And well, Chad had to race Saturday morning, so he got some miles in at least.
• 20:30
And yeah, I didn't ride at all Saturday. We rode a little bit Sunday [laughs]
• 20:36
This sounds like one of the rides I've gone and like going like, "Hey, I'll be the guy that's actually riding the bike on this bike ride of yours, Dave." [laughs] Did, did you [laughs]... Yeah.
• 20:46
Did you- I remember that one. [laughs] Um, yeah, it seems like every year we do less and less riding and more and more partying up there. [laughs] Down with that. Oh, well. [laughs] Right. Did you Strava any of that?
• 20:58
Yeah. [laughs] Yeah. I did, actually. I- Taking the mountain between the- I almost did a dick on Strava... [laughs] the bar and the bathroom... but the ride from the... So yeah, the, the ride from- KOM...
• 21:07
there's like two trails going to the campground and, um, from the start to finish. And, um, if you do like in a loop, it almost looks like a cock. I screen capped it off my Strava of course, and, [laughs]
• 21:21
um, I haven't shared it yet, but you know. You're like 12, aren't you? One of these days maybe. Maybe. [laughs] Maybe. [laughs] Sometimes. Well. [laughs] Usually. Uh,
• 21:33
but yeah, I, I wanted a #dickrunClaire in it, but you know, I haven't posted it on, uh, on Instagram, 'cause she's this CrossFit lady that travels like in Europe and the US and like plans her runs out to look like, you know, dicks.
• 21:48
And there's a couple vaginas in there and stuff like that. [laughs] So I was like, "Ooh, cool. I'll take that." I've seen that. I've seen a couple of the dick run. Yep. Very clever. Yeah. Hilarious.
• 21:57
[laughs] Now that's the proper use of the internet. That's awesome. [laughs] It's gotta take some planning. It's gotta take... You're not doing that- It does. Yeah, yeah... just for a free run.
• 22:07
Oh, I should turn here- Right... 'cause I'm creating a ball. Speaking of turning here, I'm gonna turn here and go get some beer. But that's, you know, I would like to- You guys talk amongst yourselves...
• 22:14
she, she was actually in, uh- You listening, Dave?... Wisconsin, if not Milwaukee. I don't remember. What's that? Huh? Yeah. Did you say beer? Sometimes. [laughs] You are so laid back. I, I think I want some now. Maybe.
• 22:26
Maybe. [laughs] We may have said beer. I'm not sure. I, I have a, I have a Keweenaw- Top of the hill. Top of the hill KOM for beer... I, I, that's right. Here's...
• 22:36
I, I have a Keweenaw Brewing Company Pickax Blonde in my hand with a three-pack bag. My favorite beer from up there, so open that up for the occasion. [laughs] Sorry, Troy.
• 22:50
I just- I just had an epic fail, Dave, while you've been talking. Oh, yeah. [laughs] I, I failed. He, he tossed two that did not- That did nothing... yeah, it was a- I'll take the one on my left here.
• 22:58
[laughs] Oh, I fail. Ooh, I don't fail anymore. I just was handed a beer. Oh, we're gonna need a bottle opener here. We gotta have like a dozen of them in here. Somewhere. Right here. Yep, we got it covered. Got it.
• 23:10
Do you have any time pedals? There's four of them. I need to find some time pedals. Rustmore. My suggestion about these, uh, poppers is don't do them in very- They make Rustmore Christ... enclosed spaces.
• 23:20
It's really loud. And it smells great. Can't hear you. What'd you say? Yeah. Ooh, this looks good. Was that you, Josh, that got, uh, Vito when he was bending over, or was it the other way around? What?
• 23:33
Who, who the fuck's Josh? The one who was bending over to do something on his bike- Not Josh... and someone threw one of those right in his face. In whose face? I, I think I did that. [laughs] No, I didn't. No, no, no.
• 23:42
Like, I- That's why I'm sitting on a lot of them... I might have done it. It, it was Josh or you, Tony, or, and Vito was involved, but it wa- it was perfect timing. I'm pretty sure I did.
• 23:50
I literally bent over and like- Yeah, I, I-... someone threw one on the ground... I may have been responsible for that one, 'cause I had them in my pocket that, that Grandpa Tickles gave me and... Yeah. Yeah.
• 23:59
I'm not, I'm not- Yeah... I'm not gun shy anymore. I don't even notice them, so. Yeah, yeah. You can stop throwing them at me now. Thanks. [laughs] Nice. Well now, we've got a new beer, uh, today for the, for the show.
• 24:10
Yeah, we gotta talk about, we gotta talk about our beer. So Dave, you just be quiet and listen while we talk about this delicious looking and smelling beer. Okay. The beer of the show.
• 24:18
I'll, I'll drink mine while you talk about it. Good. Yeah, this is, um, from Deschutes out in Bend, Oregon. And, uh, they came up with a beer called Hand Up IPA. Uh-huh. Kind of to celebrate- Right...
• 24:30
the start of the cyclocross season, but also because one of the founders of Deschutes passed away from, um, pancreatic cancer. So Deschutes will be donating a dollar per barrel of this fine beer
• 24:43
for pancreatic cancer I'm going to pause and reflect For a- Sorry... for a swallow. Mm. Mm. Mm. Hmm. [laughs] That's a- I'm eating lasagna right now That's a pretty fine tasting beer- Yeah... is what that is.
• 24:59
Yeah, it is Very drinkable. Good stuff. What's its, uh, ABV here? Do we know? 6.5. 65 IBUs.
• 25:08
This is an American style IPA with aroma and flavor driven by the citrus, tropical, and grassy hop notes, with a light malt character and a crisp, dry finish. Yeah. The malt i- is actually not that light, I don't think.
• 25:23
I- if you're listening, kind listener, and you happen to find this in your store, I highly recommend you pick yourself up a six pack. It's got a guy riding a bike on the front of it, so- Yeah, how can I go wrong?
• 25:32
That's pretty sweet. Yeah. There you go.
• 25:35
Do you guys remember, I m- I'm gonna date myself, but going back to one of the first River West 24s, when the gentleman was at the booth switchback right when you come up and you have to climb the last hill, and he had a table set up just like in the Tour de France with glasses, and he would run alongside of you and go, "Water?
• 25:55
Water?" And if you said no, he'd say, "Pabst? Pabst?"
• 25:58
And he would let you, he would give you, like, a four ounce Pabst and you would drink it and crush the can in the, cup and throw it on the ground, and he'd quick come by and grab it just like the races. That's awesome.
• 26:07
Wow. He was the coolest dude in the world. Nice. Coolest. That was a Milwaukee handoff right there. Yeah. Yep. Yep. Yeah.
• 26:14
Yeah, I mi- I miss, I, I, I wasn't a- like, last Jungle Cross, I normally was doing the beer handoffs, and this year I didn't, and I felt out of place. When I saw- Be there for next year Yeah.
• 26:25
Well, we, we- When I, when I, when I saw you hand off, I'm like- We, we didn't have PK Hill this year, either Oh. I think Dave's phone's acting up. I, it's- Yeah, it sounds terrible... kinda hard to hear you, bro.
• 26:35
I thought, I thought- Is it an iPhone?...
• 26:36
I thought it was just my cans, but- There we go again with the Apple bashing Yeah [laughs] [laughs] Hi, hi, my name is Tony- Apple bashing, yeah Apple Basherberg I've, I've, I'm, I'm on speaker, you know, it's
• 26:47
a [laughs] Are you in the bathtub? I'm talking like a normal person [laughs] Yeah, normal. Maybe that's the problem. It's the- You wanna know?
• 26:53
It's learned how you talk otherwise [laughs] Just sitting there in the bathtub drinking beer with candles and a cat [laughs]
• 27:00
I'm just thinking of crap right now That's a picture I never wanna put in my brain again, you jerk Just kidding. Yeah, gotta paint the word picture for y'all I'm kidding. Got bubbles.
• 27:09
I can see him totally in a bubble bath, some candles. All right, man, we're gonna let you go.
• 27:13
It's just kind of- So I've got to- Well, go ahead, but we're, it's just not coming through that good, so- Did, did everybody survive, uh, oh, sorry. Did, did everybody survive, uh, the Steans Memorial Race? Yeah. That.
• 27:25
Yep. Maybe. Yeah. [laughs] Sometimes. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Maybe. Uh-oh. And, and I remember taking a store on the Camino, apparently, so. Oh, yeah, we didn't go- But, yeah, whatever... I didn't go over there.
• 27:38
That was a good ride. Yep. Yeah, we talked about it at the beginning of the show some. I would like to say this poutine is far from routine. [laughs] Was that at Steans, because I don't remember that.
• 27:50
Yes, you, [laughs] you were so drunk, dude. [laughs] You barely could finish one beer. That's how drunk you were. You could barely finish drinking one beer. Yes. I wasn't drunk.
• 28:01
I was just exhausted from drinking all day. [laughs] There you go. All right, dude. We're gonna get through the rest of this show. Well, have a good night, guys. I gotcha. Hey, thanks, man.
• 28:11
Thanks for, uh, keeping that alive, Greg. Yep. It's a good time. And Tony and Mike, for your volunteering also, 'cause I did nothing, so yeah. It's- Ah, very good... very fun All right, man. All right, man.
• 28:21
We'll talk to you later. Right on. All right, see ya. Bye. Okay, bye. Bye. And that was Dave Lance..com..com. I know, sometimes it's just a little hard to hear Dave when he's on the phone. Yeah.
• 28:35
But I think we got through most of that. DFL, Dave Fuckin' Lance He sounds a lot like- [laughs] He sounds a lot like Leonardo Calucci on the phone. [laughs] That's what I noticed.
• 28:43
And he had that, we should put that in the notes, too. He had his goofy grass bike. Yeah. I have a picture of that or, or- The maple?... or his, uh- What bike? No, that was not. That's his c- that's his bamboo bike.
• 28:54
Bamboo. His maple bike is far nicer. That thing's, that's a joke. It's bamboo, but on the inside it's all carbon fiber. So it's- It's not, it's not a boo, though, which is- No. No... also engineered bamboo.
• 29:07
Is that also structure engineered bamboo? Yeah.
• 29:09
Yeah, they do something to it with epoxies and whatnot to- Well, you generally have to epoxy the joints and stuff, but- I get confused at times with that His is, like, it was some sort of weird Kickstarter project.
• 29:18
[laughs] Did you see how his three-speed was held on? Someone's gotta have a picture of that. It's, like, a bar clamp, like a, a, a muffler clamp or something.
• 29:25
He, he definitely, uh- Well, that's what, like, uh, that, that same setup that, uh, Kim's buddy- Doing for the three-speed? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It looked almost identical. Huh. Almost identical. Huh.
• 29:37
Hmm, this Deschutes is delicious. The what? The Schitz. I was noticing on the side of the beer bottle that this was packaged on the 28th of August, so even now it's only a few days old, but, uh- Wow...
• 29:50
it was, it's, they started putting it onto the independent retailers the 1st of September, and this should be, uh, in the major chains by October 1st, folks. Ah.
• 29:59
Shout out to- Just in time for your cyclocross season to start Oh, man. Shout out to Deschutes for sending us three of these tasty bottles. Yeah. Thank you. They, they came by UPS, didn't they? They did.
• 30:08
It was hilarious. As soon as I saw the label, like, I always check who it's from in case I should open it, and I almost turned to the UPS driver and said, "You brought us beer!"
• 30:16
But I don't think they're supposed to deliver beer, so I just shut up. I don't know that they, it matter. You can deliver wine now, so why not beer? Can you? Okay. Huh. I don't know. Huh. If you- It arrived safely.
• 30:25
That was impressive. Yeah, it's, the box is very well engineered Pharmaceuticals are sent through state lines as well by all of those things. Huh? Horribly. Huh. Well, no. Uh-oh.
• 30:38
Well, there, he's got the box right there. Oh, look it. It's even- Ah... a travel box that's made to carry beer. That's amazing. That's freaking impressive. Yeah. Yeah, it's a well-engineered box.
• 30:49
[laughs] Sending great thanks out to De Shoots for hooking us up. Right on, man. And also for making the bottles arrive here. Like, I don't know, do they can beer? They probably do, but- Hmm...
• 31:00
the bottle made it intact- I-... through the many thousands of miles I haven't seen De Shoots in a can. In cans. Maybe not yet. I'll think about it. Interesting. Hmm.
• 31:10
We could digress into why bottle or canned beer is better than the, one or the other, but let's carry that out another day. Right? Put a pin in it. Let's talk about bikes. Put a pin in it.
• 31:19
Yeah, let's talk about riding bikes- Yeah... again. Isn't there a bike ride coming up? Oh, yeah. There's always a bike ride. [laughs] And a bridge. This week's a good one, though. Oh, yes. Goonies Ride. When is it?
• 31:29
Hey, you guys. Guys. Uh, Friday night. Yeah. Yeah, when this goes on. Boom. 7:00. I've got- Get your ass down to Boone & Crockett. I've got an obligation. So do I. Obligation. The Goonies Ride. [laughs] The Goonies Ride.
• 31:45
It's, uh, they go to Sloth's grave, don't they? Yeah. Yeah, John Matuszak. Yeah. The actor who played it. Yep, yep. Uh, died- Who was also what? [clears throat] A football player. A Oakland Raider. Yeah.
• 31:57
And yeah, he, uh, rests in peace down in Holy Sepulchre. Oh, can't say that word. [laughs] You try saying it. He, I can't. All right. [laughs] He was also, uh, had a cameo on The A-Team, I understand. Oh, yeah.
• 32:12
I'm just... Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. The, that '80s TV run. He was in a lot of shows, actually. Yeah. Yeah. Just a big guy with a big, big hair and big beard. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It, it, it's, it's a very legion.
• 32:24
I mean, it's not like, ooh, yeah, we're freaking out. No. It's a very respectful stop at the grave site. Gravesite. Baby Ruth t- Baby Ruth toast. Nice. I like it. Dun, dun-dun. Then you head back north. Nice.
• 32:40
Sounds good. And a beer here and there. Yeah. Hither and yon. Yeah. It's not a race. Very nice. It's a ride. Well, if you're in Milwaukee, try and make that, folks. Please do, 'cause it'll be a damn rip.
• 32:50
It'll be right after you listen to this podcast. Yeah. Yeah. Get your ass down there. Get on your bikes and ride. Yep. Um, next week we have a in-studio guest. Is that right? Karissa Givens. Nice. Oh, right on. Yeah.
• 33:03
She's, um, connected with all sorts of cycling advocacy around the city. I believe she's still with the Bike Fed, right? I will- Probably... I, I think she was. I think so. Yeah.
• 33:11
I figured we'd wait for next week for her to tell us about what she's doing, but, um, I know she's organizing these, um, protected bike lane, um, rallies, I guess you'd call them, where- Yep...
• 33:22
people are calling attention to the fact that protected bike lanes aren't a bad thing. Oh, the, the, the human- The human wall... the human- Right, right... human bike lane. Yeah, yeah. Right.
• 33:30
They were doing one, uh, I think tonight. Well, when, well, when we're recording this, down at, uh, Red Arrow- Nice... on Water Street. I noticed next to Manpower- Go to Milwaukee and listen...
• 33:40
every morning I ride that route to work and I was, you know, outside of Manpower, I don't know what street that is. It's where the- Manpower... it's where the, uh, street- Acuity Exhibits...
• 33:49
Tuesdays are the streets on, Meets on the Streets festival where they have all the food trucks, but- Oh, yeah, yeah. It's nice... every morning- Yeah... eight out of the nine cars that take that road
• 33:59
corner the bike trail, straight, straight through the bike pra- path. Ev- And I just watch them do this. It's like...
• 34:05
And then they all turn to go into work at, not Manpower, but the building next to it that, where I wiped out on Santa Rampage one day really bad. Oh, yeah. Blew a tire and- The- Yeah... Aurora? Yeah, Au- Thank you.
• 34:15
Aurora. Yeah. River Center. Yeah. So you are literally riding... I wanna stand there one day with a, you know, "This is a bike path."
• 34:22
Speaking of just this is a bike path, should we also talk about our ride where the gentleman yelled at us that was running? [laughs] He was a tour de towner and he- Oh... scolded us for being on the sidewalk.
• 34:33
Well, scolded Greg first. Well, he scolded us, too, but you- Yeah, but-... biffed him. Well, yeah. He scolded me and I s- I followed his hand motion and I made contact. For, for those viewers that are, uh- [laughs]...
• 34:47
not familiar with Milwaukee, there are a couple of sidewalks you can legally ride on if you're over the age of 15. One of those is the Locust Street Bridge.
• 34:55
[laughs] Yeah, and owing to the fact that it's- It's Locust Street... a major thoroughfare. Yeah. Yeah. And some jogger was yelling at us because he was running abreast with his buddy and we had to go around him. Yep.
• 35:09
Well, there's some- I'm just glad I didn't knock him in the river... a lot of finger wagging out there about this gentleman and what- Yeah. I'm just glad I didn't knock him into the river.
• 35:14
I mean, I, I, I li- I like making contact, but at fir- like when I d- I, I like made contact, I'm like, "Oh, shit." He could be going over the bars. Mm. [laughs] So yeah, so there was that, too. Mm-hmm.
• 35:27
It was fun, though. All in all, a good couple weeks of cycling and- Yeah, we have had some fun. You know? I don't know. Summer's dwindling down. The fall season's upon us, which makes for better riding in my opinion.
• 35:36
Mm-hmm. Yep. It's not oppressively hot. It's, uh, un- tomorrow's the Underpants Ride, which is yesterday for those listening. Um, I will not be doing that. That, that could be chilly. It could be wet.
• 35:49
Those things- I'm saving- Those things underwear don't really add up [laughs] for me. Yeah. I'll save my energy for the Goonies Ride. The Goonies Ride. Damn.
• 35:56
'Cause nine times I, I, oh man, I've, I've done it for so many damn years, and there are some times where it's like, like how tonight's weather is, just, you know, foggy, creepy and whatever. And it's like- Perfect...
• 36:11
damn, this is just- Perfect... you could not script this better. And you get like 70 people in, going through Grant Park and all this stuff, and it's this caterpillar of back lights- Lights and yeah...
• 36:24
and you're like, "Damn, sweet. Yes, yes, yes." Somebody get a video of that so we can post it next week. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Sure. There you go. I'm telling you. Get that there GoPro out.
• 36:32
I know you got one or two there, Sven. This is like- Yeah. It just too much effort to... And it's so boring- [laughs]... watching somebody else's GoPro It's true. Yeah.
• 36:40
It is true Unless you have other cameras that can add different angles and other interesting stuff. A GoPro thing- Or, you know... is the most boring deal I've ever seen.
• 36:48
Or if it's New Year's Day and, you know, JK takes it digging on the beach. Yeah, the one- That's, that's kinda fun... the two, three seconds- Yeah... that are actually interesting to watch. Occasional mic. Sure. Yeah.
• 36:57
We could get- [laughs] Occasional mic occasionally. [laughs] Right? Yep. Hey, speaking of weeks and weekly, we are doing this every week now. So get your asses in here. Yeah, come on in. Say hi.
• 37:08
We do have a call-in number, 717-727-2453. That spells bike. Really? And we're doing this at 7:00 PM Central Standard Time. Yeah. Yeah. All through until we get sick of doing it again. Yeah.
• 37:20
How far did we make it on the Weekly Dose before we kinda gave up on that? That was, uh, show 123 that I had the- Was, [laughs] was the last one that you had? The, the last one in the Google Docs.
• 37:31
I think I did a couple- We can beat that record... I did a couple further from, uh, Vegas, I think, where I called in or something, but, uh- Well, that's the last one I had...
• 37:39
it was more of a logistic- That's the last one I had shown on screen. I, I think we would've kept going. Yeah. It was a logistics thing on my part partially- Yeah... that we stopped doing it, I think. Mm-hmm.
• 37:46
Well, I- The ex- the experiment of seeing whether Gomez and I could actually do something together for an extended period worked, so. Well, I think right now- We're 103, 123 times... 123 times...
• 37:56
this is our, this is our 25th show. 25th. Yeah. I say right now- Only 98 more to go... we pledge to beat that record. Beat that record. Well, it's still going on as the Dose of Fat, so I think- Yeah. Well, it's-...
• 38:05
they're up to 140-ish now or something. Oh, sure. Yeah. But- It just has a different numbering system... numbering system. Yeah. So it doesn't count. I hate math. Math? Math. The Band? They're awesome.
• 38:17
I love the Band exclamation point, exclamation point, exclamation point. [upbeat music] You all have a great whenever you're listening to this. Yeah, this is- That's like question mark and the mysterians... on demand.
• 38:29
Man. Yeah. Listen whenever you want, man. It's- Yeah... a podcast. It's, it's your life. Enjoy it. [upbeat music] Go to shoots.
• 38:40
  [upbeat music]
