- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's Thursday, it's the 29th
- 0:17of January and we have reached the point in the book of Luke
- 0:23where we have come to the morning Thursday reading.
- 0:27So this is where it gets tough. We have been following the story
- 0:30of Jesus through his baptism and his ministry and the incredible
- 0:35things he has done, his journey to Jerusalem, his arrival there,
- 0:40the plots against him, and now it all gets very real.
- 0:44And as we read this, I don't know about you, but I can find
- 0:47this quite distressing as we read this part of the story.
- 0:50But the thing that we know is that Jesus went through all of
- 0:55this willingly because He loves us.
- 0:59And His mission from the outset was to save us.
- 1:02And this is what it looks like to save us.
- 1:05And so with that incredible knowledge that all of this he
- 1:08does because he loves you, friends, and He loves me.
- 1:12And we read it. Holy Spirit, may we just see the
- 1:17truth of the depth of your love for us as we read your words to
- 1:22us today. All right, friends, let's buckle
- 1:26ourselves up. Let's get ready and read Luke
- 1:29chapter 22. The Festival of Unleavened
- 1:41Bread, which is also called Passover, was approaching.
- 1:45The leading priests and teachers of religious law were plotting
- 1:48how to kill Jesus, but they were afraid of the people's reaction.
- 1:52Then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot, who is one of the 12
- 1:56disciples, and he went to the leading priests and captains of
- 2:00the Temple Guard to discuss the best way to betray Jesus to
- 2:04them. They were delighted and they
- 2:06promised to give him money. So he agreed and began looking
- 2:10for an opportunity to betray Jesus so they could arrest him
- 2:14when the crowds weren't around. Now the Festival of Unleavened
- 2:18Bread arrived. When the Passover lamb was
- 2:20sacrificed, Jesus sent Peter and John ahead and said, Go and
- 2:25prepare the Passover meal so we can eat it together.
- 2:29Where do you want us to prepare it?
- 2:30They asked him. He replied, As soon as you enter
- 2:33Jerusalem, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you.
- 2:37Follow him at the house he enters.
- 2:40Say to the owner. The teacher asks, where is the
- 2:43guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?
- 2:47He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set
- 2:50up. That is where you should prepare
- 2:52our meal. They went off to the city and
- 2:56found everything, just as Jesus has said, and they prepared the
- 3:00Passover meal there. When the time came, Jesus and
- 3:03the apostles sat down together at the table.
- 3:06Jesus said, I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal
- 3:11with you before my suffering begins, for I tell you now that
- 3:15I won't eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled
- 3:19in the Kingdom of God. Then he took a cup of wine and
- 3:23gave thanks to God for it. Then he said, take this and
- 3:28share it among yourselves, for I will not drink wine again until
- 3:32the Kingdom of God has come. He took some bread and gave
- 3:36thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and
- 3:39gave it to the disciples, saying, This is my body which is
- 3:43given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.
- 3:47After supper he took another cup of wine and said, This cup is
- 3:52the new covenant between God and his people, an agreement
- 3:56confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for
- 4:00you. But here at this table, sitting
- 4:04among us as a friend, is the man who will betray me.
- 4:08For it has been determined that the Son of Man must die, but
- 4:13what sorrow awaits the one who betrays Him?
- 4:16The disciples began to ask each other which of them would ever
- 4:19do such a thing. Then they began to argue among
- 4:22themselves about who would be the greatest among them.
- 4:26Jesus told them, In this world the kings and great men lorded
- 4:30over their people, yet they are called friends of the people.
- 4:35But among you it will be different.
- 4:38Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank,
- 4:42and the leader should be like a servant.
- 4:44Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one
- 4:47who serves? The one who sits at the table,
- 4:50of course, but not here, for I am among you as one who serves.
- 4:56You have stayed with me in my time of trial, and just as my
- 5:00Father has granted me a Kingdom, I now grant you the right to eat
- 5:05and drink at my table in my Kingdom, and you will sit on
- 5:09Thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel.
- 5:14Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat, but
- 5:20I've pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should
- 5:24not fail. So when you have repented and
- 5:27turned to me again, strengthen your brothers, Peter said, Lord,
- 5:32I am ready to go to prison with you and even to die with you.
- 5:36But Jesus said, Peter, let me tell you something, before the
- 5:40rooster crows tomorrow morning you will deny 3 times that you
- 5:44even know me. The Jesus asked them, when I
- 5:49sent you out to preach the good news and you did not have money,
- 5:53a traveller's bag or even an extra pair of sandals, did you
- 5:56need anything? No, they replied.
- 6:00But now he said, take your money and a traveller's bag and if you
- 6:04don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
- 6:07For the time has come for this prophecy about me to be
- 6:10fulfilled. He was counted among the rebels.
- 6:14Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true.
- 6:18Look, look, they replied. We have two swords among us.
- 6:22That's enough, he said. Then, accompanied by the
- 6:26disciples, Jesus left the upstairs room and went as usual
- 6:30to the Mount of Olives. There he told them, Pray that
- 6:35you will not give in to temptation.
- 6:38He walked away about Australian's throw, and knelt
- 6:41down and prayed. Father, if you are willing,
- 6:45please take this cup of suffering away from me.
- 6:50Yet I want Your will to be done, not mine.
- 6:55Then an Angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him.
- 6:58He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that
- 7:03his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.
- 7:08At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only
- 7:12to find them asleep, exhausted from grief.
- 7:16Why are you sleeping? He asked them.
- 7:19Get up and pray so that you will not give in to temptation.
- 7:24But even as Jesus said this, a crowd approached, led by Judas,
- 7:28one of the 12 disciples. Judas walked over to Jesus to
- 7:33greet him with a kiss. But Jesus said, Judas, would you
- 7:38betray the Son of Man with a kiss?
- 7:42When the other disciples saw what was happening, they
- 7:44exclaimed, Lord, should we fight?
- 7:46We brought the swords, and one of them struck at the high
- 7:50priest's slave, slashing off his right ear.
- 7:52But Jesus said no more of this, and he touched the man's ear and
- 7:57healed him. And Jesus spoke to the leading
- 7:59priests, the captains of the temple guard, and the elders who
- 8:02would come for him. Am I some dangerous
- 8:06revolutionary? He asked that you come with
- 8:09swords and clubs to arrest me. Why didn't you arrest me in the
- 8:14temple? I was there every day, but this
- 8:17is your moment, the time when the power of darkness reigns.
- 8:22So they arrested him and led him to the high priest's home, and
- 8:27Peter followed at a distance. The guards lit a fire in the
- 8:30middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them
- 8:33there. A servant girl noticed him in
- 8:36the firelight and began staring at him.
- 8:39Finally she said this man was one of Jesus followers, but
- 8:44Peter denied it. Woman, he said, I don't even
- 8:46know him. After a while, someone else
- 8:49looked at him and said, You must be one of them.
- 8:52No, man, I'm not, Peter retorted.
- 8:56About an hour later, someone else insisted this must be one
- 9:00of them because he is a Galilean too.
- 9:03But Peter said, man, I don't know what you were talking
- 9:07about. And immediately, while he was
- 9:09still speaking, the rooster crowed.
- 9:13At that moment, the Lord turned and looked at Peter.
- 9:17Suddenly the Lord's words flashed through Peter's mind.
- 9:20Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning you will deny 3
- 9:24times that you even know me. And Peter left the courtyard
- 9:29weeping bitterly. The guards in charge of Jesus
- 9:34began mocking and beating him. They blindfolded him and said,
- 9:39prophesied to us who hit you that time.
- 9:42And they hurled all sorts of terrible insults at him.
- 9:46At Daybreak, all the elders of the people assembled, including
- 9:50the leading priests and the teachers of religious law, Jesus
- 9:53was led before this high council.
- 9:56And they said, tell us, are you the Messiah?
- 9:59But he replied, If I tell you, you won't believe me, and if I
- 10:04ask you a question, you won't answer.
- 10:07But from now on the Son of Man will be seated in the place of
- 10:11power at God's right hand. They all shouted, So are you
- 10:17claiming to be the Son of God? And he replied, You say that I
- 10:22am. Why do we need other witnesses?
- 10:25They said We ourselves heard him say it.
- 10:38Our Lord, as we read this story we hear how hard it is for the
- 10:44disciples to to stay true to you.
- 10:48They have just hours before committed themselves with
- 10:53absolute certainty to be true to You.
- 10:57And then when the the heat arrives and the pressure is on,
- 11:00Lord, they scatter. Because when the ferocity of
- 11:05this world and its opposition to you lands before us and on us,
- 11:11staying true to you is challenging.
- 11:14Yet, Lord, that is what you ask us to do.
- 11:18And Lord, when we do make a mess of it, there you are with your
- 11:22loving forgiveness, ready to give us another chance.
- 11:27Ah, Lord, I pray that Your Spirit would grow in us to give
- 11:31us bravery and confidence and boldness and courage so that
- 11:37when we find ourselves in these moments, Lord, we can stand up
- 11:42for what we know is true. And we can speak your words of
- 11:46truth, and we can act in a way that would bring glory to You,
- 11:51even when the pressure is on and the tide pushes us in the
- 11:56opposite direction. Lord, may we stand firm in our
- 11:58faith in you. And Lord, when we do fail, help
- 12:03us not despair, but know your words of comfort and
- 12:06restoration. So we just commit ourselves to
- 12:10you, our wonderful, loving Saviour, who went through all of
- 12:14this out of love for us. And we pray this in your saving
- 12:18name, Jesus, Amen.
