- 0:01Speaker 1: Wave. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Right Time, a
- 0:12Speaker 1: Wave original. My name is Beaumont E. Jones. Thanks for
- 0:15Speaker 1: listening wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for watching us
- 0:18Speaker 1: on YouTube. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us, give us
- 0:21Speaker 1: five stars. You only give us four stars. I'm inclined
- 0:24Speaker 1: to believe you are a hater. We are doing a
- 0:27Speaker 1: bit of a historical series right now as we looked
- 0:30Speaker 1: up and realized that this month is 10 years since
- 0:34Speaker 1: Colin Kaepernick decided to set things on fire by literally
- 0:39Speaker 1: sitting next to the water cooler. That's all it took
- 0:42Speaker 1: for him to set the world on fire. So we
- 0:44Speaker 1: got a whole series of episodes that we want to
- 0:45Speaker 1: do talking about that, looking back on it. But I
- 0:48Speaker 1: think the biggest thing we talk about, and I think
- 0:50Speaker 1: it's very important, is that the reason that Colin Kaepernick
- 0:53Speaker 1: was a big enough deal to generate all this interest
- 0:56Speaker 1: in the first place It's because Colin Kaepernick was a
- 0:59Speaker 1: really good football player. The part that gets forgotten. So,
- 1:03Speaker 1: talk about that part. We got my man in here now,
- 1:05Speaker 1: Charles McDonald, here to join us. I can't quite think
- 1:08Speaker 1: of what the best way is to introduce you other
- 1:11Speaker 1: than Tortured Falcons fan.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that's definitely relevant to this discussion. Very relevant to
- 1:17Speaker 2: this discussion. This is actually really funny, and I don't
- 1:21Speaker 2: really have a way to introduce myself yet. Maybe by
- 1:24Speaker 2: the time this comes out, people will know, but Not
- 1:26Speaker 2: homeless anymore. Not homeless anymore. Yes. Yeah, after a very,
- 1:31Speaker 2: very strange summer. But yeah, the Falcons are very relevant
- 1:35Speaker 2: to this story because I think they're part of the
- 1:37Speaker 2: Kaepernick story in terms of just his play on the
- 1:40Speaker 2: field and how he really just kind of put belt
- 1:43Speaker 2: to ass in a way that felt very familiar to
- 1:46Speaker 2: Falcons fans over the second half of that game. But man,
- 1:49Speaker 2: like just... It really just feels strange that we've already
- 1:53Speaker 2: hit the 10-year mark since that season and the last
- 1:56Speaker 2: time you played because I remember that was more when
- 1:59Speaker 2: I was an online person on Twitter and I was
- 2:03Speaker 2: getting into arguments. I look back, I'm like, man, why
- 2:05Speaker 2: did I waste time?
- 2:06Speaker 1: All the time, yeah. Yeah, look at Ben Carter. He's like, yo, man.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I thought I was helping make change. And maybe I was, right? Like,
- 2:13Speaker 1: I think I can point to some things. But let
- 2:15Speaker 1: me tell you this. That motherfucker taking a knee right now,
- 2:18Speaker 1: somebody else is going to have to get out there
- 2:19Speaker 1: and engage in the fight, at least on that front.
- 2:21Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Like, I'm up here operating
- 2:23Speaker 1: more like a general. Maybe I'm deploying people.
- 2:25Speaker 2: But... Yeah, yeah. Because it was the Kaepernick season and
- 2:29Speaker 2: then the Lamar Jackson draft, like, back-to-back years, basically. And
- 2:32Speaker 2: I was like, oh, man, I.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I've made my stances clear, but we had a little
- 2:36Speaker 2: burnout on this, you know? No, no, no, no.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So here's what it was. It was Kaepernick season one.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Then it was the year Kaepernick didn't play, which was
- 2:46Speaker 1: year one of the Trump term.
- 2:48Speaker 2: That's right.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Then the next year was the Lamar Jackson, which is
- 2:52Speaker 1: also the Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, Josh Rose, and Sam
- 2:54Speaker 1: Donald draft. Like it was a, it was a lot
- 2:56Speaker 1: going on, but I want to hit rewind before we
- 2:59Speaker 1: get to there. And I want to ask you this,
- 3:00Speaker 1: if you can remember it, I probably should ask you
- 3:02Speaker 1: this before we started the show, but whatever we hear now.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Do you remember the first time that you became aware
- 3:09Speaker 1: of Kaepernick as a player?
- 3:12Speaker 2: Oh, it was definitely his last year at Nevada. The
- 3:19Speaker 2: Boise State game that year was when I was like, oh,
- 3:23Speaker 2: I don't really know what this is. This player is
- 3:27Speaker 2: fascinating just when you look at the size and speed.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Just kind of like the raw power that made him
- 3:32Speaker 2: a fascinating NFL player, too. But also... like the pistol
- 3:35Speaker 2: offense that Nevada was like using that year that really
- 3:39Speaker 2: had kind of got them kind of to like the
- 3:42Speaker 2: heights of, of what Nevada football possibly could be and
- 3:46Speaker 2: has been since then. They went like 13 and one,
- 3:48Speaker 2: they finished in the top 10 or right outside the
- 3:50Speaker 2: top 10. They had the Boise state game that year
- 3:53Speaker 2: where it felt like they absolutely couldn't stop him in
- 3:56Speaker 2: overtime victory late in that game. And it's funny because
- 3:59Speaker 2: I was, I was talking to, you know, our buddy
- 4:02Speaker 2: Nate ties a couple of days ago and he was doing,
- 4:04Speaker 2: you know, he's doing his Wisconsin Badgers propaganda, mid-2010s Wisconsin
- 4:09Speaker 2: Badgers propaganda, but he was showing the top offenses in
- 4:11Speaker 2: the country from the 2010 season by advanced statistics, and
- 4:15Speaker 2: there was Nevada number two, you know, on the EPA
- 4:18Speaker 2: per play, and that was like all Kaepernick. When you
- 4:21Speaker 2: go back and you go and watch some of those
- 4:23Speaker 2: games and see how just dominant he was within that offense,
- 4:26Speaker 2: it really did kind of change the sport and obviously
- 4:28Speaker 2: put him on the radar where he damn near ended
- 4:30Speaker 2: up a first-round pick.
- 4:32Speaker 1: So I remember for me, In 2008, I was emailing
- 4:37Speaker 1: with my old buddy, the OG, Bruce Feldman. And 08
- 4:41Speaker 1: was a year of a lot of really good young
- 4:44Speaker 1: quarterbacks being out late. That was Terrell Pryor's freshman year
- 4:49Speaker 1: at Ohio State. That was Russell Wilson's. red shirt freshman
- 4:52Speaker 1: year at NC state. That was Robert Griffin's freshman year
- 4:57Speaker 1: at Baylor. Like it was a lot of guys that
- 5:00Speaker 1: was out there doing it. And I remember he asked
- 5:02Speaker 1: me to put my quarterbacks in a list that he had.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I can't remember everybody. Like I think Blaine Gabbert, like
- 5:08Speaker 1: it's kind of on that list too, but like, I
- 5:09Speaker 1: can't remember everybody that I had, but I remember that
- 5:13Speaker 1: my top two guys in some order, I think my
- 5:16Speaker 1: number one was Griffin and my number two was Wilson.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I remember that I think Bruce also had Griffin at
- 5:23Speaker 1: number one because it made me feel very good about
- 5:25Speaker 1: my abilities to evaluate stuff. But his number two was Kaepernick,
- 5:29Speaker 1: of whom I had never heard. I was totally unaware
- 5:33Speaker 1: of who this person was. I was just like, huh?
- 5:35Speaker 1: Ain't that something? And I didn't bother to go find
- 5:38Speaker 1: out more. And if I'm being honest, it's probably because
- 5:42Speaker 1: I might've thought that he was a Caucasian. So I
- 5:44Speaker 1: didn't really, I was going to find out soon enough.
- 5:47Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? I was like, huh?
- 5:49Speaker 2: We all have the moment though. We all have the
- 5:51Speaker 2: moment though. Yeah. Like I remember, uh, He was like,
- 5:54Speaker 2: there's this quarterback named Colin Kaepernick, and he's a Kappa.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I'm like, what are you guys talking about? If somebody
- 6:00Speaker 1: gave me the Kappa part, I'd have been extra confused
- 6:01Speaker 1: because I thought he would have been like a white
- 6:03Speaker 1: people Kappa. And for those who do not know, the
- 6:05Speaker 1: white people Kappas, they are Confederate. But anyway, so he
- 6:12Speaker 1: tells me this about Kaepernick. I don't really get into
- 6:17Speaker 1: figuring out who he is. But I do remember, and
- 6:22Speaker 1: I didn't watch that Boise State-Nevada game. And for people
- 6:24Speaker 1: who don't remember this or were not of age to
- 6:27Speaker 1: know what happened in this game, Boise State had, I
- 6:31Speaker 1: forget who they beat in the bowl game in 09,
- 6:34Speaker 1: but 2010, Boise State was a legitimate national championship contender.
- 6:38Speaker 1: And it was, you know, For many reasons, like a
- 6:41Speaker 1: provocative question as to whether or not a team that
- 6:43Speaker 1: played in the Mountain West could be that good. But
- 6:45Speaker 1: they had been good now for a very long time.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I want to say that's the year that they played
- 6:50Speaker 1: Virginia Tech early in the year in D.C. And they
- 6:54Speaker 1: went and won that game like they had one of those.
- 6:56Speaker 1: We can beat the teams that you think we need
- 6:58Speaker 1: to beat. And they get all the way to the
- 6:59Speaker 1: end of the year and they play against they play
- 7:03Speaker 1: against Nevada. And I will always remember that after Kaepernick
- 7:08Speaker 1: has set the world on fire. There was some woman
- 7:10Speaker 1: at a game at Boise State that had a sign
- 7:13Speaker 1: that said, we hated Kaepernick before it was cool. And
- 7:16Speaker 1: the reason that they hated Kaepernick before it was cool
- 7:19Speaker 1: is because he ate they asses up out there. Right?
- 7:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Big, tall, strong, ridiculously fast dude running an offense that
- 7:30Speaker 1: if you were really like deep in the woods of
- 7:31Speaker 1: college football, I think you understood what was going on
- 7:34Speaker 1: with the pistol. But the truth was, unless you were
- 7:37Speaker 1: really what Chris Alt was doing there, unless he was
- 7:39Speaker 1: out here watching Nevada football, it had really started working
- 7:43Speaker 1: its way into other offenses, right? So I've heard about
- 7:47Speaker 1: this kind of, for me, it was almost like some
- 7:50Speaker 1: old school stuff where you just hear whispers about guys.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Like I hear there's this dude that play at Eisenhower
- 7:54Speaker 1: High School. They say he a beast, right? And then
- 7:57Speaker 1: maybe somebody goes across town and checks him out, right?
- 8:00Speaker 1: We didn't, like the internet was not deployed in the
- 8:02Speaker 1: way for us to become as aware of all these
- 8:04Speaker 1: people as we might have. But he becomes that dude
- 8:09Speaker 1: The 49ers drafted him in the second round in 2011.
- 8:15Speaker 1: And for those of you who don't remember, Cam Newton
- 8:16Speaker 1: was the number one pick in 2011. And then some
- 8:18Speaker 1: terrible whites went after him. in the first round. And
- 8:22Speaker 1: you're like, why am I referring to them as terrible whites?
- 8:25Speaker 1: Because being white is how Blaine Gabbert, the athlete playing quarterback,
- 8:30Speaker 1: Jake Locker, I don't think I'm missing anybody in the
- 8:33Speaker 1: first round.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Christian Ponder was in that first round too. They had
- 8:38Speaker 2: the famous Sports Illustrated cover and they were like, which
- 8:42Speaker 2: one do you take? I'll take the one that basically
- 8:47Speaker 2: took a team that had One of the NFL players
- 8:50Speaker 2: that made it off that offense in the late Philip Kirkson-Mimer,
- 8:55Speaker 2: I forget, the fullback tight end guy, and then Nick
- 8:57Speaker 2: Fairley on defense. And they went to Alabama, to Alabama,
- 9:01Speaker 2: against a defense that ended up having eight or nine
- 9:03Speaker 2: first-round picks on it all the way through because C.J.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Mosley was a freshman on that team even though he
- 9:07Speaker 2: still played. And they won. Dude, why would you not
- 9:11Speaker 2: take that guy?
- 9:12Speaker 1: Well, I want to be fair to Sports Illustrated on
- 9:14Speaker 1: that one. Knowing a little bit about how things work,
- 9:17Speaker 1: I know what happened. And I really submitted for me
- 9:21Speaker 1: when Pete Thamel went down there and tried to get
- 9:23Speaker 1: Honey Badger for that interview that time and couldn't get him.
- 9:25Speaker 1: And then they just had a stock photo of Honey
- 9:27Speaker 1: Badger on the cover with a monochrome background. Clearly, the
- 9:31Speaker 1: interview they tried to get with Cam Newton they could
- 9:33Speaker 1: not get. And I'm pretty sure it was because it
- 9:35Speaker 1: was after that icon entertainer quote, right? Peter King got
- 9:40Speaker 1: from him. So they couldn't get a feature with Cam.
- 9:44Speaker 1: And so they're like, well, damn, now what do we do?
- 9:46Speaker 1: And so they had stock photos of all the guys
- 9:49Speaker 1: and they throw them out there. And Sports Illustrated is
- 9:52Speaker 1: good for a yellow ass inflammatory headline, right? They love those.
- 9:59Speaker 1: And so they put that out there. Yeah, we've been
- 10:01Speaker 1: talking crazy about that shit forever. But I bring all
- 10:04Speaker 1: that up because the second round, I want to say
- 10:08Speaker 1: that the pick before Kaepernick was Cincinnati.
- 10:11Speaker 2: I think it was, yeah, I would say Andy Dalton.
- 10:14Speaker 1: And they took Andy Dalton, right? which I think looking
- 10:18Speaker 1: back on it was an interesting choice because Andy Dalton,
- 10:22Speaker 1: even if as game manager, I think was ready to
- 10:25Speaker 1: start in the NFL and did, and they immediately became
- 10:27Speaker 1: like a division champion level program. They drafted AJ Green
- 10:30Speaker 1: in the first round. I mean, for a second round pick,
- 10:33Speaker 1: they did all right with Andy Dalton.
- 10:35Speaker 2: He was a good second round pick, yeah.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Yeah, the next pick was Colin Kaepernick. And it was
- 10:41Speaker 1: Harbaugh's first year with the 49ers. And It manifests itself
- 10:47Speaker 1: when you get into 2012. But the thing that I
- 10:50Speaker 1: didn't quite realize is that any player that a team
- 10:55Speaker 1: takes in the second round is a player that a
- 10:57Speaker 1: team expects to become a starter. Maybe they are not
- 11:01Speaker 1: a starter tomorrow. But second round is for starters, right?
- 11:07Speaker 2: 36 overall, yeah.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Yeah, like that's a starter. But I mean, they drafted
- 11:11Speaker 1: Alex Smith and Smith turned, who had been roundly considered
- 11:15Speaker 1: one of the biggest busts at quarterback that there had been,
- 11:18Speaker 1: though he got five years to be there. Harbaugh, the
- 11:20Speaker 1: quarterback whisperer, gets there. there is an improvement from Alex
- 11:25Speaker 1: Smith and Alex Smith has that great game in the
- 11:27Speaker 1: 2011 NFC championship game, right?
- 11:29Speaker 2: Like it was a.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Great game and then had a bad game in the NFC.
- 11:34Speaker 1: The NFC division round was the great game. The NFC
- 11:37Speaker 1: championship was the bad game where he couldn't convert a
- 11:39Speaker 1: first down. Like, I think I forget how many first
- 11:43Speaker 1: downs they did not convert on passing. And that gave
- 11:46Speaker 1: us this Eli Manning shit that we still got to
- 11:48Speaker 1: deal with. Cause then he got two Superbowls.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I think the Alex Smith part of this
- 11:55Speaker 2: is so important because, look, I get like when Alex
- 12:01Speaker 2: Smith goes on his– sometimes on social media you'll see
- 12:04Speaker 2: him talking about, man, we got to give these quarterbacks
- 12:07Speaker 2: more time to figure things out. But we can find
- 12:10Speaker 2: a happy meeting between like what he got and what
- 12:13Speaker 2: some of these other guys get maybe where they're booted
- 12:15Speaker 2: after a year because, man, he was bad for five years.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Five years.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Five years, like, really bad. And then, ultimately, I think
- 12:24Speaker 2: the Kaepernick pick, it's very illuminating, even when you have
- 12:27Speaker 2: that season with Jim Harbaugh, because, okay, well, we waited
- 12:31Speaker 2: six years, and this is it. Like... It was fine.
- 12:35Speaker 2: It was better than what you were. But ultimately, like
- 12:37Speaker 2: you knew it wasn't going to be like some gunslinging
- 12:39Speaker 2: stuff that could win you a championship or have like
- 12:42Speaker 2: the upside. It was it had been six, seven years
- 12:44Speaker 2: at that point. And you really hit the ceiling. So
- 12:47Speaker 2: I think the pick, like it makes sense. And for
- 12:49Speaker 2: him to get that runway in the first place, I
- 12:51Speaker 2: think when Harbaugh gets there, you're like, OK, no, this
- 12:54Speaker 2: is not enough. Need a little bit more. And then
- 12:56Speaker 2: they go get like the powerhouse out in Nevada of
- 12:58Speaker 2: Kaepernick coming off the season he had that year.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I think that's correct. But I also, 2012, the 49ers
- 13:05Speaker 1: were really good.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Like, they were marching through that schedule. And Alex Smith
- 13:12Speaker 1: was averaging, like, not averaging, like a completion percentage, like
- 13:14Speaker 1: in the 70% rank. He was on super game manager
- 13:19Speaker 1: status as we'd all tried to figure out, like, you know,
- 13:22Speaker 1: can you game manage your way to a Super Bowl?
- 13:25Speaker 1: By this point, Joe Flacco has not won a Super Bowl,
- 13:30Speaker 1: but Joe Flacco is not a game manager, right? When
- 13:32Speaker 1: it comes down to it, if you need to make
- 13:34Speaker 1: a big play down the field, Joe Flacco's got that
- 13:37Speaker 1: for you. One thing I remember from that 2011 season
- 13:41Speaker 1: with Smith was, Remember, that was the Randy Moss comeback season.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And Randy Moss was still getting open deep. And Alex
- 13:47Speaker 1: Smith was not looking at him. And we had never
- 13:49Speaker 1: seen a guy not look at Randy Moss. I personally
- 13:55Speaker 1: can't really do that. So anyway, we're about halfway through
- 13:58Speaker 1: this season. Alex Smith is concussed in a game. Kyla
- 14:04Speaker 1: Kaepernick comes in and starts. I want to say it
- 14:06Speaker 1: was a Monday night game against the Bears. And Well, buddy,
- 14:13Speaker 1: things look different. Like things looked very, very different when
- 14:17Speaker 1: he was in the game and they won. But look,
- 14:20Speaker 1: end of the day, man. Goddamn. Alex Smith was the
- 14:23Speaker 1: dude that was making all the money. He had been
- 14:26Speaker 1: good that year. That team was good. You don't disrupt
- 14:30Speaker 1: all of Harbaugh made that boy starter. He had that
- 14:34Speaker 1: one start. It went well. And he was like, yep,
- 14:36Speaker 1: this is what we're going to do now. Yeah, they
- 14:39Speaker 1: won that game 32-7. The game before, it was a tie,
- 14:44Speaker 1: oddly enough. But they won that game 32-7, and it
- 14:47Speaker 1: was a whole new day. Everything changed right then. And
- 14:51Speaker 1: it was basically Harbaugh looked at the team and said,
- 14:54Speaker 1: we got a ceiling with this guy. We have no
- 14:58Speaker 1: ceiling with that guy. And it then took me back
- 15:01Speaker 1: to the original point, which was he did not take
- 15:03Speaker 1: him in the second round to not start him. We
- 15:08Speaker 1: didn't see it coming. It seemed like a gigantic shock. Clearly,
- 15:12Speaker 1: Jim Harbaugh was waiting, just waiting for the chance to
- 15:15Speaker 1: make that move.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's kind of funny looking back when you see–
- 15:19Speaker 2: I guess it's more like when you think about resumes
- 15:21Speaker 2: being built in real time, like for Jim Harwell, because
- 15:24Speaker 2: you can look back now and say, man, like all
- 15:27Speaker 2: these quarterbacks, going back to like Josh Johnson at San Diego,
- 15:30Speaker 2: like Andrew Luck and Alex Smith at the time, like
- 15:32Speaker 2: Colin Kaepernick, that was still a little bit new-ish, you know? So, okay,
- 15:36Speaker 2: you figured out Alex Smith. we already thought Andrew Luck
- 15:39Speaker 2: was cold, maybe kind of no matter what. So I'm
- 15:41Speaker 2: not really sure how much credit like he was getting
- 15:43Speaker 2: for that, but for them, for him to come back
- 15:45Speaker 2: and say, well, he was this guy that was a
- 15:48Speaker 2: pretty raw player at Colorado or excuse me, at Nevada.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Cause even when you go back and look at like
- 15:52Speaker 2: that Boise state game, They were up at halftime and
- 15:56Speaker 2: they needed to come back. And there were some times
- 15:57Speaker 2: where he didn't look great. But then you just see like, well,
- 16:00Speaker 2: at some point, he's just the best athlete on the field.
- 16:02Speaker 2: And he's got the ball in his hands every single play.
- 16:04Speaker 2: We can we can work with that. And they come
- 16:07Speaker 2: out and he has against the Bears where you start
- 16:10Speaker 2: to see they can really raise the roof on the offense.
- 16:12Speaker 2: They get more explosive plays in the pass game while
- 16:15Speaker 2: also still doing the hardball thing of keeping the pass
- 16:18Speaker 2: volume low. You know, we were getting more explosives while
- 16:20Speaker 2: still not actually throwing that many times. So that's really
- 16:24Speaker 2: attractive to that. And then, obviously, I think the pinnacle
- 16:27Speaker 2: is the Green Bay game in the playoffs, you know, where.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, we'll get there. We'll get there.
- 16:32Speaker 2: We'll get there. We'll get there. We'll get there.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Because the thing to me was that when you look
- 16:37Speaker 1: at that roster, the big play threat was... That was
- 16:42Speaker 1: the year. Randy Moss was on that team that Alex
- 16:43Speaker 1: Smith was not throwing the ball to. But the real
- 16:45Speaker 1: big play threat on that team was Vernon Davis.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Vernon Davis, yeah.
- 16:48Speaker 1: While Vernon Davis is a very good tight end, Vernon
- 16:50Speaker 1: Davis is not Rob Gronkowski. He's not supposed to be
- 16:54Speaker 1: the number one threat in your offense. They had Frank Gore,
- 16:58Speaker 1: who I think the underrated thing about Frank Gore was
- 17:01Speaker 1: his capability of putting up big plays. He just played
- 17:04Speaker 1: the same way Alex Smith played for bad teams. Frank
- 17:06Speaker 1: Gore played for bad teams. And so the only year
- 17:08Speaker 1: Frank Gore had 300 carries, he had 1,700 yards. Like
- 17:11Speaker 1: we think of him as being a compiler when in reality.
- 17:13Speaker 2: He played a little too long.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Yeah, he was just playing for bad teams. But like
- 17:17Speaker 1: the numbers are like four and a half, 4.7, 4.8
- 17:20Speaker 1: yards per carry. Like he's getting that. So now Kaepernick
- 17:23Speaker 1: is there and it's also Cam Newton gets into the
- 17:26Speaker 1: NFL and now we see the widespread proliferation of, of
- 17:31Speaker 1: the zone read option, right? We start seeing those collegiate
- 17:34Speaker 1: elements coming in, in large part because the 2011 lockout
- 17:37Speaker 1: made it such that a lot of these young guys
- 17:39Speaker 1: coming in at quarterback, you ain't had that much time
- 17:41Speaker 1: to install, but so much stuff. So now we're looking up,
- 17:45Speaker 1: 49ers have been bringing Pat Kaepernick in in these packages,
- 17:48Speaker 1: but now they're running the pistol. They're running all of
- 17:51Speaker 1: those things in the NFL. Robert Griffin is running a
- 17:54Speaker 1: legitimate high school offense in Washington and setting the league
- 17:58Speaker 1: on fire. But with Kaepernick, The 49ers now look like
- 18:03Speaker 1: they might have a chance. And that gets us to
- 18:05Speaker 1: that game against the Packers in the division round at
- 18:08Speaker 1: home where that dude, the Packers, there may have been
- 18:12Speaker 1: a lot of people after it all went down trying
- 18:14Speaker 1: to tell you that Kaepernick couldn't play. Well, none of
- 18:16Speaker 1: them motherfuckers in no green bay. Kaepernick had a game
- 18:18Speaker 1: with 180 yards, I want to say before contact.
- 18:23Speaker 2: See, that game, like, I love the, like, defensive football,
- 18:27Speaker 2: and I think that is one of the most embarrassing
- 18:29Speaker 2: games that, like, any team has ever played. And it's
- 18:33Speaker 2: not even taking anything away from Kaepernick because it's just
- 18:36Speaker 2: funny to think about you have these schemes in college
- 18:39Speaker 2: or these schemes in high school that people say, oh, man,
- 18:41Speaker 2: that shit will never work in the NFL. Like, come on, man. Like,
- 18:44Speaker 2: this is too sophisticated. This is, you know, it's too fast.
- 18:47Speaker 2: It happens too, you know, the defensive players are too
- 18:51Speaker 2: fast or too smart, too physical. It won't work. And
- 18:54Speaker 2: then you see in the divisional round against the Packers,
- 18:58Speaker 2: they just ran like zone read, like the most basic
- 19:00Speaker 2: form of it, right? Like we're just not going to
- 19:02Speaker 2: block the defensive end. If he crashes, Colin Kaepernick, you
- 19:05Speaker 2: pull and you can pull to the tune of 181
- 19:07Speaker 2: yards on 16 carries. two touchdowns and then when you
- 19:11Speaker 2: get to see him in the open field then it's
- 19:12Speaker 2: like wow okay this is actually like tough to stop
- 19:16Speaker 2: like once he gets going too so it's not just
- 19:18Speaker 2: the speed it's also like the size and then uh
- 19:21Speaker 2: like i don't think that that was his best game
- 19:23Speaker 2: throwing the ball but it didn't matter because like like
- 19:25Speaker 2: i said he almost had 200 rushing yards and they
- 19:27Speaker 2: were all they were just reading like clay matthews off
- 19:29Speaker 2: the edge and when he crashed hard on frank gore
- 19:32Speaker 2: Just pull it. And then he's going to have a
- 19:34Speaker 2: wide open rushing lane. And these were plays that, you know,
- 19:37Speaker 2: people said these were knocks that guys could do that
- 19:39Speaker 2: stuff in the past. And then here on the biggest stage,
- 19:42Speaker 2: the punching tickets to the NFC Championships game, they exclusively
- 19:46Speaker 2: did that to win. And I think that that was
- 19:49Speaker 2: kind of an eye opener. from an NFL defense standpoint.
- 19:52Speaker 2: We're like, okay, well now these plays are coming to
- 19:54Speaker 2: the NFL, right? If you can see that you can
- 19:56Speaker 2: win playoff games with them, they're going to become more popular.
- 19:58Speaker 2: We've also, we've seen, you know, all these quarterbacks that
- 20:00Speaker 2: have to run over the past 15 years of football
- 20:04Speaker 2: entering the league. It was kind of like a defining
- 20:06Speaker 2: point for the league on like a national stage, even
- 20:08Speaker 2: though that had kind of been coming a little bit
- 20:10Speaker 2: as we saw Kim Newton have that ridiculous year too.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Yeah. But it's another example of how the past becomes
- 20:15Speaker 1: the future really quickly.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Right. Yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Like for example, Gus Malzahn and what he was running
- 20:22Speaker 1: in college when he started breaking that out, it's the
- 20:24Speaker 1: single wing from back in the day, you know, like,
- 20:27Speaker 1: like every now and then something happens and you look
- 20:29Speaker 1: up or like the idea of the live podcast, huh?
- 20:32Speaker 1: You mean like TV? Like the radio? These are things
- 20:37Speaker 1: that have been done. And that's very similar to what
- 20:40Speaker 1: we have here. There is an unblocked man that you
- 20:43Speaker 1: read and you force that guy to make a decision
- 20:45Speaker 1: and guys at this level haven't had to do these
- 20:47Speaker 1: things in so long and now they're having to do
- 20:49Speaker 1: them against much bigger, much faster dudes than they ever
- 20:52Speaker 1: had to consider this around. A bunch of coaches, if
- 20:55Speaker 1: you've ever taken a college math class, they can't, none
- 20:57Speaker 1: of them teachers add three plus eight. They don't do
- 21:00Speaker 1: that no more. They do all their math with letters.
- 21:02Speaker 1: That was kind of what happened to defensive coordinators in
- 21:04Speaker 1: the NFL. They don't, that part of their brain, they
- 21:08Speaker 1: don't even use that no more.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Right?
- 21:10Speaker 1: And so you take a guy that has actual NFL
- 21:12Speaker 1: skills and then you add those elements, even if only
- 21:16Speaker 1: as a change of pace of something to do. And
- 21:18Speaker 1: you get to the place where, hey man, They're in
- 21:21Speaker 1: the NFC Championship game. 49ers ain't been this far. I
- 21:24Speaker 1: want to say since 1994. Lucky for them, they was
- 21:28Speaker 1: playing the Falcons. But the Falcons, what was it? Did
- 21:31Speaker 1: they go to a 21-3 lead? Or was it a.
- 21:33Speaker 2: It was something like that. But Rodney was held at
- 21:36Speaker 2: the end of the game, so whatever.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Ain't nobody got time for
- 21:40Speaker 1: your gripes right now.
- 21:41Speaker 2: I don't have any crap about this game. I don't,
- 21:44Speaker 2: I don't, that, whatever. That's just what they do. Okay. But,
- 21:47Speaker 2: but that game was kind of interesting because they, they
- 21:50Speaker 2: kind of, I don't know if I remember correctly, like
- 21:51Speaker 2: they held Kaepernick and check on the ground, but the
- 21:54Speaker 2: problem was like, they went into the game saying, shoot,
- 21:59Speaker 2: we just saw that last week. 17 to nothing.
- 22:01Speaker 1: 17 to nothing.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Same.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Tomato, tomato, 21, three, 23, 17, nothing, 24, two. It's
- 22:03Speaker 2: all the same after a while. Yeah. Oh, God. But
- 22:15Speaker 2: in that game, I don't have the numbers in front
- 22:19Speaker 2: of me right now, but I remember that game was more,
- 22:22Speaker 2: they kind of watched the Green Bay game last week
- 22:24Speaker 2: and said, well, we can't let that happen to us.
- 22:27Speaker 2: So they had dedicated more to stopping Kaepernick on the ground,
- 22:31Speaker 2: but then that's where I think the rest of the
- 22:35Speaker 2: story of this offense is, man, they had some good
- 22:37Speaker 2: players all over the place. That offensive line was very good.
- 22:42Speaker 2: And they were very good at specifically how Jim Barr
- 22:44Speaker 2: hardball wanted to play. And then you have Frank Gore
- 22:47Speaker 2: who like it got lost to time, but when he
- 22:49Speaker 2: was younger, he was a really explosive, like athletic back
- 22:52Speaker 2: and they just pounded them. They gave it to him.
- 22:54Speaker 2: And then obviously, you know, Falcon stuff happened before the
- 22:57Speaker 2: nice defense, which was like all time good during the
- 23:00Speaker 2: stretch to lock in. And, you know, they, they backed
- 23:03Speaker 2: it up. But I really thought that game was interesting
- 23:05Speaker 2: because it wasn't a lot of Kaepernick. It was a
- 23:09Speaker 2: lot of, We're here to stop Kaepernick, and that makes
- 23:11Speaker 2: everybody else better. And it kind of felt like, man,
- 23:14Speaker 2: this could be something you could really build a franchise on.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Hey, man, 16 for 21 for 233 yards. That was
- 23:20Speaker 1: the passing situation. He only had two carries in that game,
- 23:24Speaker 1: and they were down 17-0 and walked. them down like
- 23:30Speaker 1: like this this happened like once it once you saw
- 23:34Speaker 1: that he could run for 200 yards in the playoffs
- 23:38Speaker 1: and then you saw that he could run an efficient
- 23:41Speaker 1: passing game in the playoffs and then get you to
- 23:43Speaker 1: the super bowl where they lose they're four yards away
- 23:47Speaker 1: for winning the Superbowl. But like being the question that
- 23:51Speaker 1: you ask about any quarterback really is, can we get
- 23:54Speaker 1: to a Superbowl with him? Like where Jalen hurts becomes
- 23:57Speaker 1: defiant of all the things that I've seen is that
- 23:59Speaker 1: he's gotten to two Superbowls. Right. And so whatever we
- 24:02Speaker 1: say at the end of the day, that's a quarterback.
- 24:04Speaker 1: You could get to two Superbowls with Colin Kaepernick was
- 24:06Speaker 1: a quarterback that you could get to a Superbowl with
- 24:09Speaker 1: who didn't even get to start at the beginning of
- 24:11Speaker 1: the year. Like it was literally like, just the beginning
- 24:14Speaker 1: like the only quarterback that i could think of coming
- 24:17Speaker 1: in in the middle of the year and really performing
- 24:19Speaker 1: at the level he did was dan marino in 84
- 24:21Speaker 1: i mean 83 i'm not even including tom brady because
- 24:24Speaker 1: tom brady was hey man just don't fuck this up
- 24:26Speaker 1: man that's all like kaepernick was being actively asked to
- 24:30Speaker 1: raise the ceiling as opposed to just minimize risk.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Yeah and he made everybody else better um and and
- 24:39Speaker 2: it works so well with that offense because that's when
- 24:41Speaker 2: you get to see like like the gravitational force, like
- 24:45Speaker 2: if the person who touches the ball on every play
- 24:48Speaker 2: is like the most explosive player, then like we have
- 24:50Speaker 2: a serious problem. Like it's kind of like when you laugh,
- 24:54Speaker 2: you go back and you see like Lamar Jackson being
- 24:56Speaker 2: the 32nd pick, you're like, man, what the fuck happened there? Like, well,
- 24:59Speaker 2: we know what happened there, but you know, like you
- 25:01Speaker 2: watch him play, you're like, obviously, yeah, like he was
- 25:02Speaker 2: still able to do these things. And when your quarterback
- 25:04Speaker 2: is that athletic and that explosive, like you don't need
- 25:06Speaker 2: them to necessarily be perfect. You just kind of need
- 25:09Speaker 2: them to scare the hell out of people. And that's
- 25:10Speaker 2: what had happened because it happened so fast. Like all
- 25:13Speaker 2: of a sudden, maybe when you start the year or
- 25:15Speaker 2: you start looking at this team, you're thinking about Alex
- 25:17Speaker 2: Smith and all of a sudden, Whoa, like here's a
- 25:19Speaker 2: flamethrower and he's good enough to maybe not like be
- 25:23Speaker 2: pinpoint accurate, but when he is like, it's going to
- 25:25Speaker 2: be for big gains. And when he takes off, it's
- 25:27Speaker 2: a real threat. And when he's not taking off, we're
- 25:29Speaker 2: still worried about him. And now, now there's Frank Gore
- 25:31Speaker 2: and he's got like four, 330 pound guys just blowing
- 25:34Speaker 2: holes in front of him. It's, it was really, really
- 25:36Speaker 2: fun to watch. Cause I was, You rewatched it before,
- 25:40Speaker 2: and I was like, man, they really just beat the
- 25:42Speaker 2: shit out of all these defenses that they played. And
- 25:45Speaker 2: it still kind of is, even though Harbaugh had that
- 25:48Speaker 2: success at Michigan, it still kind of is the quintessential
- 25:51Speaker 2: Harbaugh team when I think about it. Because every single
- 25:54Speaker 2: piece of it was built to punch you in the
- 25:56Speaker 2: mouth at the most physical level.
- 25:58Speaker 1: And look, they didn't win that Super Bowl, but the
- 26:00Speaker 1: next year they went 12-4 again, including another destruction of
- 26:03Speaker 1: the Packers in the first game of the year, including
- 26:06Speaker 1: another win against the Packers at Lambeau Field in the cold,
- 26:10Speaker 1: which I actually think as a quarterback is a really
- 26:13Speaker 1: underrated victory to put up. Like, these are Aaron Rodgers
- 26:16Speaker 1: Green Bay Packers, right? Like, this is Aaron Rodgers around
- 26:19Speaker 1: peak of powers, Aaron Rodgers. And the winning team is
- 26:23Speaker 1: not his, right? This other guy is the one who's
- 26:27Speaker 1: doing that, and they got him late. Because Kaepernick was
- 26:30Speaker 1: decent that year, though not as shocking, which is reasonable
- 26:33Speaker 1: to expect. Like, you and I talk about this over quarterbacks.
- 26:36Speaker 1: That year, too, the league, you know, they see things, right?
- 26:39Speaker 2: They're not going to let you do the green bathing again,
- 26:41Speaker 2: you know?
- 26:41Speaker 1: Right, they're not going to let you do that, and...
- 26:43Speaker 1: This is a Greg Roman offense. And as we've learned
- 26:45Speaker 1: with the Greg Roman offenses in other places, they just
- 26:48Speaker 1: get worse and worse every year. It just ticks down.
- 26:52Speaker 1: But the truth is, after being one play away from
- 26:54Speaker 1: winning the Super Bowl, they were one play away again
- 26:58Speaker 1: from going to the Super Bowl, playing against a team
- 27:01Speaker 1: that ultimately won the Super Bowl by a gazillion points
- 27:04Speaker 1: in the toughest environment in the world. Which is to say,
- 27:07Speaker 1: if Richard Sherman doesn't make that great play, on that
- 27:10Speaker 1: pass to Crabtree and then he kirked out on television
- 27:13Speaker 1: but if Sherman doesn't make that play and they score
- 27:15Speaker 1: the 49ers probably win that Super Bowl I think I
- 27:18Speaker 1: think that they would have I think they would have
- 27:20Speaker 1: had a they would have done similarly as well against
- 27:23Speaker 1: that Broncos team regardless of how good Peyton Manning had
- 27:26Speaker 1: been that.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Season yeah because they presented the same problems you know
- 27:29Speaker 2: like like it maybe you didn't have like the uh
- 27:33Speaker 2: ultimately what the star power of that Legion of Boom
- 27:35Speaker 2: defense became, but we still had the late Alden Smith,
- 27:39Speaker 2: Justin Smith on the inside, Patrick Willis, Navarro, Bowman, and
- 27:43Speaker 2: then on the corner, it's like.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Golden, Dante Wittner.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Yeah, Dante Wittner, Dante Hittner, as he changed his name to. Yeah, Golston,
- 27:51Speaker 2: my fault, Golston. Yeah, but like, yeah, Golston, Deshaun Golston,
- 27:53Speaker 2: he was a good player. Man, like they really kind
- 27:56Speaker 2: of had an underrated defense on the back end that,
- 27:59Speaker 2: you know, they would have beat the crap out of
- 28:01Speaker 2: that Broncos team because that was... problem like just a
- 28:04Speaker 2: little bit too finesse it was cold outside and and
- 28:06Speaker 2: uh that's the only Super Bowl I ever fall asleep
- 28:09Speaker 2: during that I was.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Watching let me tell you something about that defense I
- 28:11Speaker 1: always tell people that 2011.
- 28:12Speaker 2: 49ers team.
- 28:15Speaker 1: I don't feel bad saying about this. Wasn't none of
- 28:17Speaker 1: us watching them as that year was going on. They
- 28:19Speaker 1: had Alex Smith as the quarterback. There was no reason
- 28:21Speaker 1: to think. And look, they got a first-round bye, right?
- 28:25Speaker 1: They were a really good team, but I know nobody watched.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Okay, so I was in college. I was playing defensive
- 28:33Speaker 2: line at this point. So I was kind of in
- 28:36Speaker 2: the trenches. I was the guy who was like, anyone
- 28:38Speaker 2: who doesn't draft Aaron Donald first overall, you're smoking crack.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I don't care. But I know Jadavion Clowley, this guy's
- 28:44Speaker 2: like 280 pounds. He ran a 4.6. Like, no, it's
- 28:47Speaker 2: going to work. And I felt like the same way
- 28:49Speaker 2: about Justin Smith, man. I thought that like if you
- 28:52Speaker 2: could find like any player that could raise the floor
- 28:55Speaker 2: of your defensive line, like that guy, because he could
- 28:58Speaker 2: do anything. He was 285. He could play nose tackle
- 29:01Speaker 2: and like eat triple teams. He could play off the edge.
- 29:03Speaker 2: He was picking off stuff for Aldon Smith. Then they
- 29:06Speaker 2: had all these guys in the middle. It was so good.
- 29:09Speaker 2: And it is kind of funny because I feel like
- 29:11Speaker 2: that group has gotten undersold over time. When you go
- 29:14Speaker 2: back and look at the numbers, like, no, they were incredible.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I will just never forget the moment I realized that
- 29:20Speaker 1: I had been missing out was when the Saints gave
- 29:24Speaker 1: that ball to Pierre Thomas. Dante Wittner hit him so hard.
- 29:30Speaker 1: That's been 15 years since then. And I'm trying to
- 29:34Speaker 1: think if I can remember like a clean legal hit
- 29:37Speaker 1: in the way where it was just like, oh my. God,
- 29:40Speaker 1: like he was out cold well before he hit the ground.
- 29:44Speaker 1: It was immediate. And I was like, oh, I just
- 29:46Speaker 1: misunderstood what kind of team this was. And so they
- 29:48Speaker 1: were this close to winning the Super Bowl. They were
- 29:50Speaker 1: this close to going back to the Super Bowl. And
- 29:53Speaker 1: it was never that good again. So coming up next,
- 29:56Speaker 1: we're going to talk about the next part of Kaepernick's career,
- 29:59Speaker 1: which leads us into the protest, which leads us obviously
- 30:03Speaker 1: into him never playing again. Look, if your supplement shelf

- 30:53Speaker 1: employed Charles McDonald, but we can't tell you exactly where,
- 30:55Speaker 1: and I just noticed that that's the Houston Oilers hat
- 30:57Speaker 1: on your head. Joel from Missouri City, you'll be the
- 31:00Speaker 1: first person that he don't hate on. That is on
- 31:02Speaker 1: this show. But we get to the 2014 season with
- 31:06Speaker 1: the 49ers. And so there are a couple of things
- 31:08Speaker 1: at play, right? Again, it's year four of Greg Roman.
- 31:13Speaker 1: So this is going to whittle down. It's also year
- 31:15Speaker 1: four of Harbaugh, a man who burns people out. And
- 31:18Speaker 1: so now he's in the fights with the front office,
- 31:20Speaker 1: you know, and everything that's going. And they had a
- 31:23Speaker 1: Rudy Poo 8-8, just a middling 8-8 season. I can't
- 31:28Speaker 1: think of anything noteworthy about this season except for the
- 31:30Speaker 1: fact that it felt coming into that year like there
- 31:34Speaker 1: was a wide-open window and then our recollection that that's
- 31:37Speaker 1: actually not how football works.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, right. Precisely. These windows can slam shut
- 31:43Speaker 2: at any point. And I think that the 2014 season,
- 31:47Speaker 2: it just kind of became like, it just kind of
- 31:51Speaker 2: felt like one of those things where, man, we got
- 31:53Speaker 2: to close shop on this. Right. For whatever reason, it's
- 31:57Speaker 2: not working, whether it's hardball, whether it's management, whether it's
- 32:00Speaker 2: all of us, just we don't fit anymore, which is
- 32:03Speaker 2: crazy to think about how fast this happened, man. When
- 32:07Speaker 2: you go back and you look at the Go Pro
- 32:10Speaker 2: Football Reference or ESPN and look at Colin Kaepernick's career, like, man,
- 32:14Speaker 2: this is only a very short amount of time that
- 32:17Speaker 2: all of this, all of this happened, like before you
- 32:19Speaker 2: even get to, you know, ultimately what happened in 2016.
- 32:23Speaker 2: But 2014, it was just like, it got so unstable
- 32:27Speaker 2: so fast. And I think one thing that is funny,
- 32:29Speaker 2: you know, looking back, which maybe should have been a
- 32:32Speaker 2: little bit clearer at the time too, was Trent Baalke
- 32:35Speaker 2: versus Jim Harbaugh and how those careers have turned out.
- 32:39Speaker 2: You know, when Trent goes to Jacksonville.
- 32:40Speaker 1: It's clear that they picked the wrong horse.
- 32:42Speaker 2: They picked the wrong guy there, absolutely. Especially considering, because
- 32:46Speaker 2: as soon as Harbaugh left, I think you kind of saw, man,
- 32:49Speaker 2: maybe we just deal with the crazy stuff. And we
- 32:52Speaker 2: just win these football games or at least have someone
- 32:55Speaker 2: that can get us to functional. Because, you know, they
- 32:57Speaker 2: had some offensive line injuries that year. Like the run
- 33:00Speaker 2: game wasn't great. Like even the defense was not as
- 33:02Speaker 2: good as they used to be. And then I think
- 33:04Speaker 2: you saw maybe Kaepernick's not quite ready to actually be
- 33:08Speaker 2: the hard franchise quarterback and hole up the team. But
- 33:13Speaker 2: they just didn't even give themselves a chance by ultimately
- 33:18Speaker 2: choosing to let Jim Harbaugh go at the first sign
- 33:20Speaker 2: of tension, really. Because think about where you were before
- 33:25Speaker 2: Jim Harbaugh got there, even before Colin Kaepernick. And we
- 33:28Speaker 2: just talked about you had all those years of Alex
- 33:30Speaker 2: Smith being bad. It's not like you just falling right
- 33:35Speaker 2: back into that without the question. You weren't good for
- 33:38Speaker 2: a very long time. And before that, man, we're talking
- 33:41Speaker 2: about you need Steve Young or Joe Montana for you
- 33:43Speaker 2: to have that relevance as a franchise. You can very
- 33:46Speaker 2: easily be a bad team. And after they fired Harbaugh,
- 33:50Speaker 2: it was bad because Jim Tomsula ended up being the
- 33:54Speaker 2: head coach. He did. He did. The only thing I
- 33:57Speaker 2: remember about him is then they had the graphic where
- 33:59Speaker 2: he won his first game or something or won a
- 34:02Speaker 2: preseason game. And they had him with 100% win total
- 34:05Speaker 2: over Bill Walsh. I'm like, aha, good one. But yeah,
- 34:09Speaker 2: that's where it really started to fall apart.
- 34:11Speaker 1: That's right. Because I remember the thing was they won
- 34:14Speaker 1: the first game of the year. But it was back
- 34:17Speaker 1: when they used to do the Monday night double header
- 34:19Speaker 1: to start the year. And they were the late game
- 34:21Speaker 1: and the home team would win every one of those
- 34:24Speaker 1: because it would be a seven o'clock local kick. It's
- 34:27Speaker 1: like a 1030 Eastern kick. And a big part of
- 34:30Speaker 1: it was this is the year of like the year
- 34:32Speaker 1: that Colin Kaepernick becomes a drop back passer. Right. Like
- 34:36Speaker 1: that's where that's where this was going. That was what
- 34:38Speaker 1: the plan was. He had worked all offseason with Trent Dilfer.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Put a pin in that. um and then i think
- 34:43Speaker 1: it was jeep.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Chris another thing looking back.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Yes yes yeah like jeep chris was the offensive coordinator
- 34:50Speaker 1: and i remember watching him and them trying to do
- 34:53Speaker 1: this and he looked so he looked imprisoned in the
- 34:57Speaker 1: pocket right like it looked like a constraint where the
- 34:59Speaker 1: pocket is supposed to be a protection it looked much
- 35:02Speaker 1: more like a constraint for him and he just bounced
- 35:05Speaker 1: on his feet and he was just always boom boom
- 35:06Speaker 1: boom looking around like the rhythm of it wasn't there
- 35:09Speaker 1: Then he wound up getting hurt that year. I mean,
- 35:10Speaker 1: there's no way around it. He was awful.
- 35:13Speaker 2: He was not good.
- 35:14Speaker 1: There are explanations perhaps that one could offer as to
- 35:18Speaker 1: why he was awful. But for those eight games that
- 35:21Speaker 1: he played, I mean, it's six touchdowns, five interceptions. And honestly,
- 35:26Speaker 1: those numbers felt better than the execution was. That was
- 35:29Speaker 1: a dreadful football team.
- 35:32Speaker 2: No, they, they, they were, they were terrible. Um, And
- 35:36Speaker 2: they really just had no chance. And I thought– because
- 35:39Speaker 2: I remember I was watching that. I was like, man, like–
- 35:42Speaker 2: it's funny looking back at all this stuff. I remember
- 35:44Speaker 2: watching it. I was like, man, like, is his career
- 35:46Speaker 2: about to be over? And the answer was yes, but,
- 35:49Speaker 2: you know, not quite for the reasons of that season. Because, yeah,
- 35:54Speaker 2: that was the season when Blaine Gabbert came in. Yeah.
- 35:56Speaker 2: And they sucked, dude. And that was the year that
- 36:00Speaker 2: the defense was– I mean, that was the year where
- 36:04Speaker 2: the defense really started to fall off. And then in 2016,
- 36:08Speaker 2: they had one of just the most abominable defenses that
- 36:11Speaker 2: I think maybe doesn't really get talked about, but since
- 36:13Speaker 2: I've looked at that year so much, it's something that's
- 36:15Speaker 2: burned in my brain.
- 36:17Speaker 1: They gave up 480 points in a 16-game season.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they did. They sure did. That's nuts. The
- 36:26Speaker 2: 2015 season, it really kind of hurt as someone who,
- 36:30Speaker 2: enjoyed watching Kaepernick. Cause I was like, man, like you
- 36:33Speaker 2: can't go get Harbaugh back. Right. Like, obviously that was
- 36:36Speaker 2: the mistake that you had made. You're you're in it.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Like you had gone from Jim Harbaugh and, you know,
- 36:43Speaker 2: even Greg Roman, that doesn't suck, but you went from
- 36:45Speaker 2: Jim Harbaugh to, and Dick Fangio is your defensive coordinator
- 36:48Speaker 2: to Jim Tomsula and Eric Mangini in 2015. Like that's,
- 36:52Speaker 2: that's a clear staff downgrade. The players were getting worse.
- 36:55Speaker 2: So clearly you saw you, we have made a mistake.
- 36:57Speaker 2: And then, It just, it took even another step back
- 37:01Speaker 2: in 2016 when Chip Kelly was the head coach. And unfortunately,
- 37:05Speaker 2: like this is where I feel like my Stan hat
- 37:07Speaker 2: come on with Kaepernick. Cause like that was the year
- 37:09Speaker 2: where like it kind of starts to turn back in
- 37:13Speaker 2: his favor a smidge.
- 37:15Speaker 1: So this is the thing for me on that is,
- 37:17Speaker 1: this is where Colin really gets into what I call
- 37:19Speaker 1: the black quarterback zone, right?
- 37:21Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
- 37:22Speaker 1: And what I mean by that is, Once the black
- 37:26Speaker 1: quarterback has a bad season, it is not a bad season.
- 37:29Speaker 1: He has been exposed.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Right.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Exposed. Right.
- 37:34Speaker 1: The progression of a quarterback is not like the progression
- 37:38Speaker 1: of a running back or basically anybody else. Just about
- 37:41Speaker 1: every other position in the NFL. You have a, a growth,
- 37:46Speaker 1: a peak, and then a fall. The falls happen at
- 37:49Speaker 1: different rates.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 37:51Speaker 1: But it's a, it's a pretty standard function. that goes
- 37:54Speaker 1: up until it reaches its maximum. And then it comes
- 37:58Speaker 1: back down. Quarterback isn't like that. Quarterback is to me
- 38:01Speaker 1: much more like being a baseball player in general, a
- 38:03Speaker 1: pitcher in specific, where you may have these great, great year,
- 38:07Speaker 1: these great numbers early. And then Peyton Manning had two
- 38:10Speaker 1: bad years thrown in there as a starting quarterback. Tom
- 38:14Speaker 1: Brady's second year as a starter was not quite in
- 38:16Speaker 1: line with the others. Like you're going to be hard
- 38:19Speaker 1: pressed to find the quarterback that did not have a
- 38:21Speaker 1: hiccup in his career. And the hiccup many times can
- 38:25Speaker 1: be a hiccup of multiple seasons, right? Kaepernick had one
- 38:29Speaker 1: bad season on a bad team where we acknowledge also
- 38:33Speaker 1: that he was seriously injured. So injured. In fact, it's
- 38:36Speaker 1: the only thing that saved his job because he signed
- 38:39Speaker 1: a bad contract that didn't really guarantee the money down
- 38:42Speaker 1: the line, but he was too hurt to pass a
- 38:44Speaker 1: physical contract.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:46Speaker 1: So they could not cut him in place, you know,
- 38:49Speaker 1: to give the job of all people to Blaine Gabbert. Like,
- 38:52Speaker 1: to look around and be like, nah, let's try this out.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Nothing that he had done previously. All that potential that
- 38:56Speaker 1: you saw before, it should tell you.
- 38:58Speaker 2: You just saw it. You just saw it, you know?
- 39:00Speaker 1: You just saw it. Like, two years before, he was
- 39:02Speaker 1: pretty good, right? One bad year when everything else was
- 39:05Speaker 1: bad and the world was ready to shut it down.
- 39:08Speaker 1: But give this to Chip Kelly, who you have to remember,
- 39:12Speaker 1: This point had the reputation of not liking black people.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Black people he did.
- 39:16Speaker 1: He had that. Now look, Chip Kelly's a man that
- 39:19Speaker 1: once had John Carlos come talk to his team. And
- 39:22Speaker 1: people thought he did not like black people. It wasn't
- 39:24Speaker 1: that he didn't like black people. It's that you young
- 39:27Speaker 1: hippity hoppity black people made him nervous. Chip Kelly was
- 39:31Speaker 1: a coach at the University of New Hampshire.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Yeah. Right.
- 39:35Speaker 1: He was not prepared for the world that he got
- 39:37Speaker 1: to with big time college football and with the NFL. Right.
- 39:41Speaker 1: But he was the one that every time they talk
- 39:43Speaker 1: about college, they get college is hurt.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:45Speaker 1: When college gets back, we'll see it. And then when
- 39:46Speaker 1: college got back, Chip wasn't no fool. He was like,
- 39:48Speaker 1: Blaine Gabbert, what are you high? This boy back here.
- 39:54Speaker 2: And and like this is the this is the one
- 39:58Speaker 2: the season where I was like, You can't tell me
- 40:01Speaker 2: that this guy, when it's all said and done, you
- 40:04Speaker 2: objectively look at the season, this is easily one of
- 40:07Speaker 2: the 32 best quarterbacks in the league when, because when
- 40:10Speaker 2: he came back without question, like 32 without question.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Yeah. 32 is trying to be really safe. Right.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Really safe. Right. And that was, and I feel
- 40:19Speaker 2: like sometimes I look back at things I said, like, man,
- 40:21Speaker 2: I was being a little bit too nice to y'all
- 40:22Speaker 2: goddamn races, but yeah, I've grown in those mistakes won't
- 40:27Speaker 2: be made again. It's just, it's just like, it was,
- 40:32Speaker 2: it was frustrating watching that game that season because I,
- 40:36Speaker 2: That team was bad, bad. Capital B, some of the
- 40:43Speaker 2: worst stuff that I've ever seen in professional football. Because
- 40:47Speaker 2: we were talking about briefly the run defense that they
- 40:50Speaker 2: had that year. Man, they gave up at least 248
- 40:57Speaker 2: rushing yards four times that season.
- 41:00Speaker 1: What? Four times.
- 41:02Speaker 2: They gave up 248 to the Falcons, the Saints- $ 249
- 41:05Speaker 2: to the Bucs, and then $ 313 to the Buffalo Bills,
- 41:11Speaker 2: whose offensive coordinator was Greg Roman and Tyra Taylor and
- 41:14Speaker 2: LaShawn McCoy here. And then not only that, they also
- 41:16Speaker 2: had 194, 188, 176. Like this was one of the
- 41:21Speaker 2: worst defenses in like the past 25 years of football, right?
- 41:26Speaker 2: They get 30 points a game, you know?
- 41:29Speaker 1: Hold on, 30.0.
- 41:31Speaker 2: 30.0 points.
- 41:32Speaker 1: 30 on the nose.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Yes, yes. Okay, dude, I'm looking at some of their
- 41:37Speaker 2: stats now. 41% of their opposing drives ended in a
- 41:42Speaker 2: score on offense, like, on defense. It's like, you get
- 41:46Speaker 2: the ball, it's a coin flip unless you're getting, like,
- 41:48Speaker 2: at least a field goal. That's embarrassing. And it kind
- 41:51Speaker 2: of became like, this team is bad, so Colin's bad.
- 41:55Speaker 2: When you kind of look at how that season went,
- 41:59Speaker 2: you know, Chip Kelly, like you said, Chip Kelly had,
- 42:02Speaker 2: he had the background of, maybe he doesn't like black people,
- 42:06Speaker 2: but with Colin, he was okay with, But it kind
- 42:08Speaker 2: of wore on him as the season went, kind of
- 42:11Speaker 2: playing a little bit of defense for Colin. And you
- 42:13Speaker 2: could see in the play, Colin, there's going to inside zone,
- 42:15Speaker 2: inside zone, Colin save us. And he kind of did
- 42:17Speaker 2: every once in a while.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Hey man, let me, let me run this by you
- 42:21Speaker 1: about the offense. Their leading receiver by far was Jeremy Curley.
- 42:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:31Speaker 1: With 64 catches. The number two receiver was, was Quentin Patton,
- 42:34Speaker 1: who could be one of 500 former NFL players.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Dude, I was.
- 42:39Speaker 1: About to say.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Right?
- 42:40Speaker 1: Quentin Patton is the official name of a number three
- 42:44Speaker 1: to five receiver, right? A guy who runs back kicks
- 42:48Speaker 1: and also plays special teams. That is what that name
- 42:51Speaker 1: sounds like. But the number two receiver had 37 catches.
- 42:53Speaker 1: The number one had 64. The number three receiver was
- 42:57Speaker 1: Sean Drone, who amazingly lasted to age 29 as a
- 43:00Speaker 1: running back. Garrett Selick was number four.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Fake Brett Selick. We got his brother, you know, not
- 43:05Speaker 2: even the real one.
- 43:06Speaker 1: Oh, I forgot that. Yeah, you're right. Like this, this
- 43:10Speaker 1: was a really, really, really bad team. There was just
- 43:18Speaker 1: no way around it. It was an awful team, but
- 43:22Speaker 1: all the controversy swirled that year, but it truly felt
- 43:25Speaker 1: like if you played paid any attention, We had settled
- 43:30Speaker 1: at a point now where Kaepernick is, oh, I want
- 43:34Speaker 1: to say he's 29.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he just turned 29 during the season.
- 43:37Speaker 1: He's not a franchise quarterback, probably not, but he was
- 43:40Speaker 1: a starting quarterback and those don't grow on trees, right?
- 43:43Speaker 1: Like he was a decent football player, but it is
- 43:46Speaker 1: crazy to think what the margins are, like how all
- 43:49Speaker 1: of this plays out if they go to the second
- 43:51Speaker 1: Super Bowl. or if they win the first Super Bowl.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Harbaugh doesn't burn those people out, right? He doesn't tear
- 43:58Speaker 1: his labrum. Like the margins on this and the whole
- 44:02Speaker 1: football story itself being different are so thin and it
- 44:05Speaker 1: matters because as we'll talk about in later episodes, it
- 44:08Speaker 1: was the football that was used to justify keeping him out.
- 44:12Speaker 1: But it was this close to being people were really
- 44:15Speaker 1: going to have to tell on themselves in order to
- 44:17Speaker 1: do it.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. And that's what was so frustrating because they
- 44:21Speaker 2: did tell them themselves and they were fine doing it.
- 44:23Speaker 2: And it just didn't matter, you know? Like, cause, cause
- 44:26Speaker 2: when you go back and the game that always comes
- 44:28Speaker 2: back to my mind for that season is they go
- 44:31Speaker 2: to Miami. And, you know, he had, you know, 300
- 44:34Speaker 2: rushing yards or 300 passing yards, three touchdowns, ran for
- 44:37Speaker 2: over 100 yards. You saw it. It was like, okay. Like,
- 44:40Speaker 2: even on a team as bad as this, in the
- 44:42Speaker 2: right circumstances, he can still be someone that goes out
- 44:44Speaker 2: and produces at a high level. You know, it's not like,
- 44:47Speaker 2: like you say, when he was 28, 29 years old,
- 44:49Speaker 2: it's not like he was physically washed. You know, maybe
- 44:52Speaker 2: he wasn't running a 4-4 anymore, but... it was good
- 44:54Speaker 2: enough where that was still something that you have to
- 44:56Speaker 2: account for in the open field. And I, I just
- 44:59Speaker 2: think like, as the season went on, man, they had
- 45:02Speaker 2: a game. Then they had a game against Chicago where it,
- 45:07Speaker 2: the weather was just so bad. I think he was
- 45:09Speaker 2: like one for five. like four yards, something like that.
- 45:12Speaker 2: And that's the one that people point to and they
- 45:14Speaker 2: lose all context and like what actually happened in that game.
- 45:17Speaker 2: But when you made the surroundings like more equitable and
- 45:21Speaker 2: more standardized, like he was obviously like a starting caliber
- 45:25Speaker 2: quarterback that year in whatever diminished version of Chip Kelly's
- 45:29Speaker 2: offense that had existed there. It was really frustrating like
- 45:33Speaker 2: watching people pretend like he was just like still having
- 45:36Speaker 2: the same exact statistical output that he was having the
- 45:39Speaker 2: year before when you can see it. Like it wasn't
- 45:42Speaker 2: good because the team around him was terrible, but they
- 45:45Speaker 2: were still functional enough at times with him on the
- 45:48Speaker 2: field that you can make a case. Like if you
- 45:50Speaker 2: were another team next year, that was like, Hey, maybe,
- 45:54Speaker 2: maybe we give this a chance. Like I, like I'm
- 45:56Speaker 2: actually kind of sympathetic to the idea that the 49ers
- 45:59Speaker 2: might just want to move on clean after all of
- 46:02Speaker 2: this and start over. Like they hired Kyle Shanahan, but
- 46:06Speaker 2: what happened after to Colin is like just objectively nonsense,
- 46:09Speaker 2: you know?
- 46:11Speaker 1: But he was, and I think this is important, and
- 46:14Speaker 1: part of why I wanted to do this episode, he
- 46:17Speaker 1: is legitimately a historically significant figure.
- 46:22Speaker 2: Yes.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Just as a football player.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Yes.
- 46:26Speaker 1: You're going to be watching football games for a long time,
- 46:29Speaker 1: and somebody's going to put up some crazy dual-thread quarterback
- 46:32Speaker 1: line in the playoffs, and they're going to say, and
- 46:36Speaker 1: the only quarterbacks to do this are da-da-da, da-da-da, and
- 46:40Speaker 1: Colin Kaepernick. And we saw that come up as the
- 46:42Speaker 1: controversy swirled in years where you'd have these lines and
- 46:45Speaker 1: they awkwardly didn't really want to bring that part up, right? Like,
- 46:51Speaker 1: given that the 49ers haven't won a Super Bowl in,
- 46:55Speaker 1: you know, 30-something years, they need to start treating that
- 46:58Speaker 1: 2012 team You know, with some serious respect, but also
- 47:02Speaker 1: that means some bringing you back, like you bring Colin
- 47:06Speaker 1: back to the stadium at some point, right? Like he
- 47:09Speaker 1: matters to the history of that franchise. As we saw
- 47:11Speaker 1: the way the league progressed, he matters to the history
- 47:13Speaker 1: of the league because what we'll talk about as it
- 47:15Speaker 1: goes down the line, tried to make the argument that
- 47:17Speaker 1: the reason that Colin, um, wasn't getting a job was,
- 47:21Speaker 1: you know, teams don't really run the read option and
- 47:23Speaker 1: do those things anymore. And 10 years later, they do
- 47:26Speaker 1: them so much. They never stopped.
- 47:28Speaker 2: You have to be able to do it. Almost. You
- 47:30Speaker 2: have to be able to do it almost.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Right, you have to be able to do it. Like
- 47:32Speaker 1: I always said, when Josh Allen really struggled, his first
- 47:36Speaker 1: couple of years I was like if they treat him
- 47:38Speaker 1: like he's black it'll be okay and that's exactly what
- 47:40Speaker 1: they did get his big ass out there running the
- 47:42Speaker 1: ball get it outside right like relieve some pressure in
- 47:45Speaker 1: those ways and they'll figure it out because that's what
- 47:47Speaker 1: the game became the defense got to be fast to
- 47:49Speaker 1: the point where they had slowed those defensive ends down
- 47:51Speaker 1: with the rules as much as they could but no
- 47:54Speaker 1: that wasn't gonna cut it right And part of why
- 47:56Speaker 1: we saw that change in the paradigm of how football
- 47:59Speaker 1: was played is that the 49ers got to the Super
- 48:01Speaker 1: Bowl and almost got to another one with Colin Kaepernick,
- 48:04Speaker 1: and they didn't have to hide him in order to win.
- 48:08Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. He was the driving force to their offensive improvement.
- 48:14Speaker 2: We talked about it before where he ultimately ended up
- 48:17Speaker 2: making the entire offense better because everything gets easier when
- 48:21Speaker 2: you get to play 11-on-11 football. And that was quite frankly,
- 48:24Speaker 2: the only thing when you jump back forward to 2016,
- 48:28Speaker 2: that terrible offense, it was the only thing that made
- 48:30Speaker 2: the offense viable at times. The fact that you had
- 48:32Speaker 2: a quarterback that could basically get you to play 11
- 48:35Speaker 2: on 11 and was kind of figuring his way back
- 48:37Speaker 2: into the passing game. And, you know, I know it
- 48:41Speaker 2: was said a lot at the time, but he's, he's like,
- 48:45Speaker 2: even if you, if you could somehow take away everything
- 48:48Speaker 2: that happened during the season with Amelia and all that,
- 48:51Speaker 2: even if you just take like the, the raw, statistical
- 48:54Speaker 2: output of Colin Kaepernick's career and treated just as like
- 48:58Speaker 2: a squad of numbers there's never been a quarterback that's
- 49:01Speaker 2: just disappeared after his five-year output that he had where
- 49:05Speaker 2: you get into two conference championship games you're getting to
- 49:07Speaker 2: a Super Bowl even in the season where you come
- 49:10Speaker 2: back you're 29 years old you're 16 and four and
- 49:12Speaker 2: he never threw another pass like that that has never
- 49:16Speaker 2: happened in the history of the league it's not like
- 49:18Speaker 2: he's someone that well we saw him start two seasons
- 49:21Speaker 2: and god damn it he was the worst thing we've
- 49:23Speaker 2: ever seen you know that doesn't happen uh so for
- 49:27Speaker 2: him to not even find a backup role or anything
- 49:29Speaker 2: beyond that like even that would just off the numbers,
- 49:33Speaker 2: just off like the on-field performance. That alone makes him
- 49:36Speaker 2: like a somewhat mysterious-ish figure until you throw in everything else,
- 49:41Speaker 2: you know.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Deshaun Kizer, Trevor Simeon. Wow. Blake Bortles. And these are
- 49:49Speaker 1: guys who were the primary starter for NFL teams that season.
- 49:52Speaker 1: The ghost of Jay Cutler.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 49:56Speaker 1: And I'm saying for the 2017 season, just to be clear.
- 49:58Speaker 2: In Miami, that was embarrassing. Yeah.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Case Keenum. what was left of Eli Manning, Josh McCown.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Case Keenum had that 2017 season with the Vikings.
- 50:10Speaker 1: He did, but they could have done that with Kyler Kaepernick.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Probably.
- 50:14Speaker 1: That's all I'm saying. Like, this is a different story
- 50:16Speaker 1: on the same kick.
- 50:16Speaker 2: We'll see how it goes.
- 50:18Speaker 1: But when people keep talking about, could Kyler Murray be
- 50:21Speaker 1: the next Sam Darnold? I'm like, he better than him.
- 50:26Speaker 1: Super Bowl or not. Like, Like, what are we talking about?
- 50:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I was like, man, I was here in New York.
- 50:33Speaker 2: I like Sam. He's a good guy, but y'all not
- 50:35Speaker 2: going to trick me. I watch my own eyes, man. No, no,
- 50:38Speaker 2: come on.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Look, the 49ers went out there with Brian Hoyer. That
- 50:43Speaker 1: was the guy that, I mean, I was with you. Hey,
- 50:45Speaker 1: I understand if y'all need to, like, start over.
- 50:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 50:48Speaker 1: It makes sense. But not to go get Brian Hoyer.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Right, like, I thought, oh, like, are y'all about to
- 50:57Speaker 2: take like Patrick Mahomes or Deshaun Watson? Okay, you know,
- 51:02Speaker 2: then I kind of get it. But to take like
- 51:04Speaker 2: Solomon Thomas, like, man, you don't even want to try it.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Don't get me started. Don't get me started.
- 51:08Speaker 2: This is your guy. That could have worked. It could
- 51:11Speaker 2: have worked.
- 51:12Speaker 1: I mean, don't get me started. But like, no, but
- 51:15Speaker 1: with all of that as it went, You could have
- 51:17Speaker 1: easily had Colin as your backup because when nobody going
- 51:20Speaker 1: to ask them to start. Right. Like the people, this
- 51:23Speaker 1: wasn't like Tim Tebow. We're like, oh man, shit, Jesus freaks.
- 51:26Speaker 1: They might, they might start a rebellion outside. No, man.
- 51:29Speaker 1: Unless it was going to be the black Israelites out there.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Like when Kyrie was out, you know, was wilding. You
- 51:34Speaker 1: would never go have that. But I think in all
- 51:37Speaker 1: this time, you tell me if I'm wrong, I really
- 51:39Speaker 1: think a lot of people, I mean, it happened in
- 51:41Speaker 1: real time had just forgotten. No, we had a beast
- 51:44Speaker 1: on our hands here. And even if he just proved
- 51:46Speaker 1: to be a comet in terms of his performance, there
- 51:49Speaker 1: aren't that many comets. And he was truly one of them.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's kind of tough, like, when we
- 51:56Speaker 2: were talking about the 2014 season, what I was thinking,
- 52:00Speaker 2: I was like, man, I don't want to sound like,
- 52:02Speaker 2: you know, the stereotype scouting report, you know, but that's
- 52:05Speaker 2: what it looked like at times, you know? Man, I
- 52:07Speaker 2: don't know if he feels comfortable with what he's looking
- 52:09Speaker 2: at right now, but they're like, look at what was
- 52:12Speaker 2: going on around him, man. Dude, Jim Tomsula, we were
- 52:15Speaker 2: laughing at that guy the second they made him the
- 52:17Speaker 2: head coach, just like looking at him. And then he
- 52:20Speaker 2: ended up being just as bad as we thought it
- 52:22Speaker 2: was going to be. And then by the end of it,
- 52:24Speaker 2: Trent Baalke had just done such a terrible job managing
- 52:27Speaker 2: that team post-hardball. There was nothing left. But even in
- 52:30Speaker 2: the garbage heap that was the 2016 49ers, you still
- 52:35Speaker 2: had enough to say, shit, maybe if I'm Washington or
- 52:41Speaker 2: something like that, and we're looking at whatever's going on
- 52:43Speaker 2: with Kirk Cousins, or even if you're the 49ers, you're saying,
- 52:47Speaker 2: Kyle Shannon's coming over and saying, man, like for a
- 52:49Speaker 2: year just to try this out, it could have worked.
- 52:53Speaker 2: And I remember like thinking that I think that's kind
- 52:56Speaker 2: of what they were afraid of too. Like it could
- 52:59Speaker 2: have worked. And that is also like not an acceptable
- 53:04Speaker 2: outcome for what the powers that be want, I don't
- 53:08Speaker 2: want to say wanted, but want like in general. And
- 53:11Speaker 2: it's just really unfortunate that like you see like a
- 53:14Speaker 2: shining star like that. someone that, you know, like to
- 53:17Speaker 2: a degree has kind of built the groundwork for guys
- 53:20Speaker 2: to come after him and have success in the league.
- 53:21Speaker 2: And at least for teams to take that a little bit,
- 53:24Speaker 2: that skillset a little bit more seriously, just to vanish
- 53:27Speaker 2: like that. It's just horrible. It's horrible. But yeah, there's
- 53:32Speaker 2: really no, you can't talk about this reasonably and say
- 53:35Speaker 2: that skill wise, he had no business being in the
- 53:38Speaker 2: league without just telling on yourself, which is, was fine
- 53:42Speaker 2: for a lot of people as, as we saw over
- 53:43Speaker 2: the years, they didn't care about telling themselves and ended
- 53:46Speaker 2: up being pretty profitable for them.
- 53:48Speaker 1: Hey man, that's Charles McDonald, newly employed. Congratulations, brother.
- 53:53Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you. Yeah. Definitely excited to tell the
- 53:55Speaker 2: people what's going on and get back to it. It's
- 53:59Speaker 2: been a weird summer, but this is the conversation I
- 54:02Speaker 2: need to start thinking about the NFL again. Cause, I
- 54:04Speaker 2: haven't thought about this shit in two months, but it
- 54:07Speaker 2: was good.
- 54:08Speaker 1: Welcome back, brother. And ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much
