- 0:08Speaker 1: Mylay Angel fans, then, welcome back to Halo territory. I
- 0:12Speaker 1: am Mike DD Givanna, former La Times baseball writer and
- 0:15Speaker 1: host of the show, and I am joined by a
- 0:18Speaker 1: current La Times baseball writer, the national baseball writer for
- 0:22Speaker 1: my former once great newspaper, Bill Shak, and Shake.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Welcome to the show. How you doing today?
- 0:27Speaker 3: Doing well?
- 0:28Speaker 2: How are we doing each I'm doing good. Shake. Always
- 0:31Speaker 2: a pleasure to have you on.
- 0:32Speaker 1: And I don't know how many Angel fans still subscribe
- 0:36Speaker 1: to the La Times since they made the really ill
- 0:41Speaker 1: advised and ill fated decision to stop covering them as
- 0:44Speaker 1: a beat a couple of years ago. But if you
- 0:47Speaker 1: are still subscribing to The Times and you are still
- 0:50Speaker 1: wanting to follow the Angels, thank goodness we have Bill
- 0:54Speaker 1: Shak and we owe him a debt of gratitude because
- 0:57Speaker 1: he is the only reporter left at the La Times
- 1:00Speaker 1: who can write about the Angels with any kind of
- 1:03Speaker 1: authority and a maximum amount of clarity. So Shape, thank
- 1:08Speaker 1: you for your service. We are grateful and we appreciate
- 1:13Speaker 1: your Angel coverage, even if it doesn't come at the
- 1:15Speaker 1: pace that we used to have when you and I
- 1:17Speaker 1: were covering ball for like I said that once great newspaper.
- 1:21Speaker 1: So shake He wrote a story last week about the
- 1:24Speaker 1: Home Run for Anaheim Act, a bill that cleared both
- 1:28Speaker 1: houses of the state legislature and assigned by Governor Gavin Newsom,
- 1:32Speaker 1: would provide an inducement for the Angels to revert back
- 1:36Speaker 1: to their Anaheim name. Shake on, don't you just tell
- 1:39Speaker 1: us how this bill would work?
- 1:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I think a lot of people sort of look
- 1:44Speaker 3: at the headline and see, oh, Anaheim Angels. Great, they're
- 1:47Speaker 3: going to go back to Anaheim Angels. Or it's not great,
- 1:49Speaker 3: but they're going back to Anaheim Angels. Anyway, they're not
- 1:52Speaker 3: right now. So what the city of Anaheim has worked
- 1:55Speaker 3: with state representatives to do is try to come up
- 1:58Speaker 3: with the plan that would help help them get the
- 2:00Speaker 3: name back. The last time the city negotiated with Arty Morino,
- 2:05Speaker 3: the Angel's owner, they had a plan on what to
- 2:07Speaker 3: do with all this land around Angel Stadium. And of course,
- 2:11Speaker 3: any Angel fan knows what do you do if you
- 2:13Speaker 3: go to an Angel game? Mostly you drive in the
- 2:15Speaker 3: parking lot, you go to the game, and you drive home.
- 2:18Speaker 3: So is there a way we could develop that land
- 2:21Speaker 3: with things like you see around ballpark? Stay in San
- 2:24Speaker 3: Diego or Denver or pretty much anywhere now outside Los
- 2:29Speaker 3: Angeles and Anaheim, which is shops, restaurants, maybe a place
- 2:33Speaker 3: to get a drink after the game, maybe somewhere to go.
- 2:37Speaker 3: So they had the plan for this, and in the
- 2:39Speaker 3: middle of it, the city of Anaheim asked to Arti Morino,
- 2:43Speaker 3: you know, as part of this, since we're helping you out,
- 2:45Speaker 3: how about Anaheim Angels again? And he said no. So
- 2:49Speaker 3: what this means is, next time they do this dance,
- 2:54Speaker 3: whether it's with Ardi Marino or potentially with the new owner,
- 2:58Speaker 3: they're going to have a little carrots. And the carrot says,
- 3:02Speaker 3: if we help you develop this land in such a
- 3:05Speaker 3: way that we can get you an exemption from a
- 3:08Speaker 3: state law that requires you to make affordable housing the
- 3:11Speaker 3: number one priority on the land and ultimately could make
- 3:14Speaker 3: you more money, mister owner, then you have to change
- 3:18Speaker 3: your name back and then Arty or the new owner
- 3:21Speaker 3: could decide how they want to go from there.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Do you think this whole concept would be more amenable
- 3:29Speaker 1: to a new owner as opposed to Arty considering the animosity,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I don't know if that too strong a word. You know,
- 3:38Speaker 1: some of the animis between the city and Arty that
- 3:40Speaker 1: they've had over the years.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Would this have a much.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Better chance of maybe actually coming to pass under a
- 3:46Speaker 1: new owner.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Well, I think if you look at Arty's situation, he's
- 3:51Speaker 3: been through this twice now with the City of Anaheim,
- 3:54Speaker 3: where they've talked about what they're going to do with
- 3:56Speaker 3: the parking lots, they've reached a deal and the city
- 3:59Speaker 3: is back to way both times. And I'm not saying
- 4:01Speaker 3: the city was right or wrong, but the fact is
- 4:04Speaker 3: they had a deal and it didn't go through, and
- 4:07Speaker 3: the city was the one that made that decision. So
- 4:09Speaker 3: I don't know if already wants to talk to them
- 4:11Speaker 3: again for a third time. He just turned eighty years
- 4:14Speaker 3: old actually this month, happy birthday. Already he's got a
- 4:18Speaker 3: short term lease. He doesn't really need to do anything.
- 4:21Speaker 3: So in my mind, it would be totally understandable if
- 4:24Speaker 3: he said, you know what, I'm not here forever. Maybe
- 4:28Speaker 3: this is something for the next guy. We don't know.
- 4:30Speaker 3: I mean, there's always a good deal to be had,
- 4:32Speaker 3: and maybe he wants to pursue that. But I think
- 4:35Speaker 3: if you come in as a new owner, if the
- 4:37Speaker 3: team is sold, then you got to figure out the
- 4:40Speaker 3: long term which isn't really already concerned. So right now,
- 4:44Speaker 3: the Angels have a lease to play in Angel Stadium
- 4:47Speaker 3: through twenty thirty two, so six more years. They can
- 4:50Speaker 3: extend that lease for another six years if they want,
- 4:55Speaker 3: so it's just up to them, and that would give
- 4:57Speaker 3: you plenty of time they're already or, I think, more
- 5:01Speaker 3: importantly for a new owner to try to figure out
- 5:03Speaker 3: what do you want to do. Do you want to
- 5:04Speaker 3: stay in the old ballpark and fix it up and
- 5:08Speaker 3: renovate it, make it nice. Do you want to build
- 5:11Speaker 3: a new ballpark next door to it in the parking lot?
- 5:13Speaker 3: That'd be nice too. And of course, if you're a
- 5:16Speaker 3: new owner, your leverage when the city says, hey, how
- 5:20Speaker 3: about Anaheim Angels could be not saying it would be,
- 5:23Speaker 3: but it could be. How about if I don't play
- 5:25Speaker 3: here at.
- 5:25Speaker 1: All, how about the Portland Angels or the Nashville Angels?
- 5:29Speaker 3: Right yeah, I mean, I think the one thing Anaheim
- 5:32Speaker 3: really has going for it is that, as we mentioned,
- 5:35Speaker 3: every owner of every pro sports team now almost thinks
- 5:39Speaker 3: it's required to build this whole village around your stadium,
- 5:43Speaker 3: your arena where you can make money. Three hundred and
- 5:46Speaker 3: sixty five days out of the year, not just a
- 5:49Speaker 3: few days where there's a game. So if you've got
- 5:53Speaker 3: one hundred and fifty acre site, which is the Angel
- 5:56Speaker 3: Stadium site, next to three freeways and train station, like,
- 6:01Speaker 3: you really can't do better in terms of access, and
- 6:03Speaker 3: you're going to have a hard time finding a property
- 6:07Speaker 3: that is that large, that is still that accessible. So
- 6:11Speaker 3: I think Anaheim is still in the driver's seat. But again,
- 6:14Speaker 3: you know, I'm not rich enough to be a new owner,
- 6:16Speaker 3: so I don't know for sure.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Well, let's take a quick look back at how we
- 6:20Speaker 1: got to this point. Ardi Morino, of course famously change
- 6:24Speaker 1: the name of his team from the Anaheim Angels to
- 6:27Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in two thousand and
- 6:30Speaker 1: five in an effort to market the team to the
- 6:32Speaker 1: entire Southern California region rather than just Orange County. Of Anaheim.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Phrase was included in the official name to comply with
- 6:41Speaker 1: the provision of the team's Angel Stadium least that requires
- 6:43Speaker 1: that the team's name quote include the name Anaheim therein.
- 6:48Speaker 1: But the Angels essentially dropped the of Anaheim portion in
- 6:52Speaker 1: their marketing and advertising material, and as we know, they
- 6:56Speaker 1: just started calling themselves the Los Angeles Angels. The city
- 7:00Speaker 1: of Anaheim sued, asserting that the name change violated the
- 7:04Speaker 1: spirit of the lease clause. That case went to trial
- 7:06Speaker 1: in January of two thousand and six, and a jury
- 7:10Speaker 1: found in favor of the team, determining it was in
- 7:13Speaker 1: compliance with the lease and thus denying the city any
- 7:16Speaker 1: monetary compensation.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Shake.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I can't believe it's been twenty years since that trial
- 7:21Speaker 1: inverted and how many days of your life were spent
- 7:24Speaker 1: in that courtroom doing a fabulous job of covering that trial.
- 7:28Speaker 1: But the city is said at the time that having
- 7:30Speaker 1: Anaheim and the team name was worth hundreds of millions
- 7:33Speaker 1: of dollars.
- 7:34Speaker 2: That's what their lawsuit was based on.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Right, Has anyone been able to really quantify the value
- 7:41Speaker 1: of that name and how much the team has gained
- 7:44Speaker 1: by calling themselves the Los Angeles Angels and how much
- 7:48Speaker 1: the team has lost by losing that Anaheim name.
- 7:52Speaker 3: That's a great question. So from the Angels point of view,
- 7:56Speaker 3: are they making more money because they're called Los Angeles
- 7:58Speaker 3: instead of Anaheim? I mean, only Arde Marino knows for sure.
- 8:02Speaker 3: But the most important financial deal the Angels signed since
- 8:07Speaker 3: the name changed was when the company we used to
- 8:11Speaker 3: know is Fox Sports, the cable company, gave the Angels
- 8:15Speaker 3: a three billion dollar contract for their television rights. That
- 8:19Speaker 3: wasn't though, because the Angels played with an la name.
- 8:23Speaker 3: It was because Fox knew they were about to lose
- 8:26Speaker 3: the Dodger rights. Because, as I think we're all hearing
- 8:29Speaker 3: way too much about now, the Dodgers have a really,
- 8:32Speaker 3: really good television contract and Time Warner Cable gave it
- 8:35Speaker 3: to them for eight billion dollars. So Fox wanted to
- 8:38Speaker 3: make sure, well, we got to have at least one
- 8:39Speaker 3: baseball team left. So when the Dodgers left Fox for
- 8:42Speaker 3: Time Warner, Fox nailed down the Angels. I don't think
- 8:45Speaker 3: that had anything to do with the name of the team. Again,
- 8:49Speaker 3: were there other business decisions where the name helped? You know,
- 8:53Speaker 3: I don't know that already probably does. But the more
- 8:56Speaker 3: important thing is from the viewpoint of the city, because,
- 8:58Speaker 3: as you reference, there was this trial. The city made
- 9:02Speaker 3: the claim that this is costing US hundreds of millions
- 9:05Speaker 3: of dollars a year, and you go, well, well, how
- 9:08Speaker 3: so it goes basically to exposure. Every time you look
- 9:12Speaker 3: on a game, does it say Anaheim? Every time you
- 9:14Speaker 3: look on a scoreboards. Is it say ana every night?
- 9:18Speaker 3: Do you hear Welcome to Angel Stadium of Anaheim, which
- 9:23Speaker 3: is what the city would much rather you call it.
- 9:26Speaker 3: They actually probably prefer Anaheim Stadium. But all those references,
- 9:30Speaker 3: you know, Anaheim used to be on the road jerseys,
- 9:33Speaker 3: all those really chances you have to see Anaheim and
- 9:37Speaker 3: think about Anaheim during the course of a three hour game.
- 9:41Speaker 3: So during the trial, the city put some witness some
- 9:45Speaker 3: experts I'm sorry, on the witness stand who had calculated this,
- 9:48Speaker 3: and they said, tell us what you came up with,
- 9:50Speaker 3: and they came up with hundreds of billions of dollars.
- 9:54Speaker 3: And in doing the research for the article that you
- 9:56Speaker 3: posted a little bit on the screen, I recently called
- 10:01Speaker 3: an expert. I said, okay, it's twenty years later. Now
- 10:04Speaker 3: what do you think is it's still hundreds of millions
- 10:06Speaker 3: of dollars And they said yeah, and certainly it would
- 10:08Speaker 3: have grown over time. It's just everything's more expensive, right,
- 10:12Speaker 3: So that sands the reason this would be two. So, yes,
- 10:17Speaker 3: there's some potential damages. The jury didn't find that to
- 10:20Speaker 3: be the case in the name change trial, but clearly
- 10:24Speaker 3: the city feels there's some worth to that or they
- 10:26Speaker 3: wouldn't be asking for it.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Hey, we're gonna take a quick break for a word
- 10:30Speaker 1: from our sponsors, and we'll be right back with more
- 10:34Speaker 1: talk about the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Hey, for those of you that are on your phone,
- 10:42Speaker 4: it's very often, or even if you don't use it much,
- 10:45Speaker 4: you should check out your wireless bill and make sure
- 10:47Speaker 4: that it is treating you well. It's summertime. You're feeling good, right, AJ,
- 10:51Speaker 4: But are you spending too much on your wireless bill?
- 10:54Speaker 4: And should mint mobile get involved now?
- 10:56Speaker 5: Someone that has two college aged kids, gott they're always
- 10:59Speaker 5: on their phone, whether it's they're checking their snap, they're
- 11:01Speaker 5: checking their DMS, they're checking their Twitter. I need fifteen
- 11:05Speaker 5: dollars a month because I need unlimited quality coverage that

- 11:40Speaker 1: And Welcome back to Halo Territory with Bill Shaking of
- 11:43Speaker 1: the La Times and Mike dg Ivanna, Well, I can
- 11:47Speaker 1: tell you one era time when that name probably had
- 11:50Speaker 1: a lot of value to the city of Anaheim, when
- 11:53Speaker 1: Roy Marcus Roy Marcus called the last fly ball had
- 11:57Speaker 1: Darren Urstad caught in the two World Series and said
- 12:01Speaker 1: the Anaheim Angels are the Anaheim Angels or champions of
- 12:04Speaker 1: the World. I forget the exact yeah, but I mean
- 12:07Speaker 1: hundreds of millions of dollars. Shake is about as vague
- 12:10Speaker 1: as he can get. I mean, uh, was there even
- 12:14Speaker 1: a ballpark figure in terms of especially the guy you
- 12:17Speaker 1: went back to in terms of the you know, twenty
- 12:19Speaker 1: years later, like how much has the city lost? Is
- 12:23Speaker 1: there even a ballpark figure that they were able to
- 12:25Speaker 1: point to? And say, man, yeah, this was worth one
- 12:28Speaker 1: hundred and fifty million, five hundred million, because hundreds of
- 12:31Speaker 1: millions kind of covers a lot of ground.
- 12:34Speaker 3: I have to go back and check for sure to
- 12:36Speaker 3: see what he said it was closer to five hundred million.
- 12:40Speaker 3: But I think the long term question going forward is
- 12:45Speaker 3: let's keep already out of the situation.
- 12:48Speaker 2: For now.
- 12:48Speaker 3: He's made clear that the team has called the Los
- 12:50Speaker 3: Angeles Angels. Let's say you're a new owner and you're
- 12:55Speaker 3: willing to talk to the city, and hey, what do
- 12:57Speaker 3: you want to talk about? We want to talk about
- 12:59Speaker 3: Anaheim Angels. We can help you get some more money
- 13:01Speaker 3: this way, we think with this proposed legislation, what would
- 13:07Speaker 3: you say, how about Anaheim Angels? Come on, and like,
- 13:11Speaker 3: I've got to think that the first thing a new
- 13:13Speaker 3: owner would say, as well, you city of Anaheim commissioned
- 13:17Speaker 3: witnesses twenty years ago who said it was worth hundreds
- 13:21Speaker 3: of millions of dollars, and presumably it's still the case
- 13:26Speaker 3: today and it probably hasn't gone down in value. So
- 13:30Speaker 3: if you're the first thing, I'm sorry, I'm not doing
- 13:33Speaker 3: great on my speech today. If you're the new owner
- 13:36Speaker 3: of the Angels, what's the first thing you have to
- 13:39Speaker 3: figure out? Stadium? Right, the stadium is sitting there for years.
- 13:43Speaker 3: The last time I got renovated was thirty years ago
- 13:46Speaker 3: by Disney. So there's been sort of a stalemate now
- 13:50Speaker 3: between the city and Laraty for a while. You're going
- 13:53Speaker 3: to have to do something. Maybe you're going to renovate
- 13:55Speaker 3: the stadium, which is going to cost you hundreds of
- 13:57Speaker 3: millions of dollars. Maybe you're going to build a new
- 14:00Speaker 3: one which is probably a billion maybe more. Okay, who's
- 14:04Speaker 3: paying for that? Right? And if you're gonna pay to
- 14:06Speaker 3: buy the team, which if the patter is just sold
- 14:10Speaker 3: for four billion, you got to think the angels in
- 14:12Speaker 3: the LA market would go for more if you're gonna
- 14:16Speaker 3: pay let's say four billion. Though for our conversation, Yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 3: you're gonna want the city to help you out with
- 14:21Speaker 3: this ballpark here, So I think you would say, if
- 14:25Speaker 3: the Anaheim name is that important to you, and it's
- 14:29Speaker 3: worth hundreds of millions of dollars, then why don't you
- 14:33Speaker 3: pay me hundreds of millions of dollars for at the
- 14:35Speaker 3: cost of a ballpark? No, I don't know where the
- 14:37Speaker 3: negotiation would go from there, but for a Bob, a
- 14:40Speaker 3: new owner, that would be the logical place to start.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Yeah, that kind of led me into my next question, like,
- 14:44Speaker 1: how do these protracted and let's be honest, failed negotiations
- 14:49Speaker 1: for a new stadium play into this whole bid to
- 14:52Speaker 1: force the Angels to revert back to the Anaheim name
- 14:55Speaker 1: is there? Does the stadium have to be sold first
- 15:00Speaker 1: or can it be done together? Would would come into
- 15:05Speaker 1: an agreement on adding you know, reverting back to the
- 15:08Speaker 1: Anaheim name sort of greased the kids for a new
- 15:11Speaker 1: stadium deal and maybe ease or I guess he used
- 15:17Speaker 1: some of the animosity between these two sides because it's
- 15:20Speaker 1: been a battle and you've done a great job covering
- 15:23Speaker 1: at all over these years. These these guys just seem,
- 15:27Speaker 1: you know, they're boom boom, They just they just can't
- 15:29Speaker 1: seem to come in agreement, come to an agreement on
- 15:31Speaker 1: any kind of stadium deal right now.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Yeah. I will say that elected officials turn over every
- 15:37Speaker 3: few years, so who you're negotiating with now might be
- 15:42Speaker 3: different than who you would have negotiated those previous deals with,
- 15:45Speaker 3: or you know, who might be in office five or
- 15:47Speaker 3: ten years from now. If that's when this comes to
- 15:50Speaker 3: a head. So I don't know specifically that I can
- 15:53Speaker 3: give you a good answer, but what happened to derail
- 15:57Speaker 3: the last deal was like a unicorn thing. You never
- 16:01Speaker 3: figure that you're gonna spend years negotiating a deal, having
- 16:05Speaker 3: hours upon hours of public hearings, always fund to sit through,
- 16:08Speaker 3: and then get the stadium approved. City council signs off,
- 16:12Speaker 3: Arti Marino signs off. It's all done, and then a
- 16:15Speaker 3: couple of years later, somebody from the FBI comes running
- 16:18Speaker 3: like we got something here for you, judge, and like,
- 16:21Speaker 3: what is this. It turns out there's a corruption investigation
- 16:24Speaker 3: to the mayor. That's probably not going to happen again.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and let's go back.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Shake referred to an article that he wrote last week,
- 16:32Speaker 1: and this just sort of lays out.
- 16:35Speaker 2: The background of this bill at a.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Time, teams in all sports seek to boost profits by
- 16:40Speaker 1: surrounding venues with shops, restaurants, hotels, and other attractions. This
- 16:45Speaker 1: bill provides Anaheim with an inducement for the Angels if
- 16:47Speaker 1: the city obtains an exemption from a state law requiring
- 16:50Speaker 1: affordable housing to be prioritized in any such development, potentially
- 16:54Speaker 1: maximizing revenue for the team, then the team must be
- 16:58Speaker 1: called the Anaheim Angels. Angels owner Already Marino has twice
- 17:01Speaker 1: reached deals of the city to develop the land, only
- 17:04Speaker 1: to see the city walk away both times, and the
- 17:07Speaker 1: last deal he rejected the city's requests to rename the
- 17:11Speaker 1: team the Anaheim Angels. We've heard a lot about the
- 17:16Speaker 1: CBA negotiations coming up shake potential lockout next season. Could
- 17:23Speaker 1: that in any way impact these negotiations or even Arty's
- 17:28Speaker 1: now as you say, now eighty year old already Marino's
- 17:31Speaker 1: decision to either sell or retain the team.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Well as everyone knows and probably has heard way too
- 17:38Speaker 3: much about, considering that we're not even at the lockout
- 17:41Speaker 3: part of the proceedings yet, the owners are almost certainly
- 17:43Speaker 3: going to lock out the players in December over their
- 17:47Speaker 3: desire to get a salary cap. Okay, the question is
- 17:50Speaker 3: that baseball has done pretty well over the past few years.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Why do you need a salary cap? And I'm already
- 17:55Speaker 3: hearing small market fans watching this to going, well, baseball
- 17:59Speaker 3: is not doing that well because you know, look at
- 18:01Speaker 3: my team against the Dodgers. Okay, fine, but ultimately the
- 18:06Speaker 3: issue here is not the Dodgers The issue is that
- 18:10Speaker 3: owners are looking at other leagues and seeing teams in
- 18:13Speaker 3: those leagues go for lots more money than baseball teams
- 18:16Speaker 3: are going for. You know, Lakers, I know that's probably
- 18:19Speaker 3: an anomaly, but they just got sold for twelve billion dollars.
- 18:23Speaker 3: The record sale for a baseball team is the four
- 18:25Speaker 3: by the Padres. What can we do, Baseball says, to
- 18:28Speaker 3: get closer to those higher numbers. Well, one thing is
- 18:31Speaker 3: get a salary coun what because if you're an owner,
- 18:35Speaker 3: you would like to control costs as much as possible.
- 18:38Speaker 3: And if you know that you can't spend say what
- 18:41Speaker 3: the Dodgers are spending number one. But also you know
- 18:45Speaker 3: that before every season you can know for sure what
- 18:49Speaker 3: your players spending is going to be because there's a
- 18:51Speaker 3: limit to it. That makes things more valuable. It's not
- 18:55Speaker 3: that you don't want to spend more, it's that you can't.
- 18:58Speaker 3: So I was told, for example, we talked to somebody
- 19:01Speaker 3: last week. Okay, let's say, in the wake of all
- 19:04Speaker 3: this Laker drama that the Dodgers go up for sale,
- 19:08Speaker 3: not saying they are, not saying they're not Mark Walter
- 19:10Speaker 3: and as people say they're not. But let's say they did.
- 19:13Speaker 3: What could you get? And I talked to a guy
- 19:15Speaker 3: who works in this line of the sports business, and
- 19:18Speaker 3: he said, I think you could get ten billion for
- 19:21Speaker 3: the Dodgers right now, but if you get a salary cap,
- 19:26Speaker 3: you could probably get twelve to thirteen billion. So take
- 19:29Speaker 3: that back to Artie Marino and well, is it worth
- 19:33Speaker 3: at least sticking it out to see if you get
- 19:35Speaker 3: a salary cap and then you can see how you
- 19:37Speaker 3: feel about selling. Probably.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Yeah, We're going to take one more quick break for
- 19:42Speaker 1: a word from our sponsors and we come back. We're
- 19:44Speaker 1: going to talk about what I think is a pretty
- 19:46Speaker 1: intriguing idea about or for the Angel Stadium site in
- 19:51Speaker 1: terms of development. We'll be right back with more Halo territory.
- 19:58Speaker 4: We have pop in color for Mack Weldon. Here. I've

- 20:50Speaker 4: W E L d O N dot com code foul.
- 20:55Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo territory with Bill Shaking of
- 20:57Speaker 1: the La Times In Mike Dgevanna, formerly of The Only
- 21:01Speaker 1: Times Shake You, wrote a story in June about a
- 21:04Speaker 1: concept floating around City Hall of putting a new stadium
- 21:08Speaker 1: and a youth sports complex next to one another. Tell
- 21:12Speaker 1: us about this concept and how, if at all, it
- 21:15Speaker 1: fits into these broader negotiations for the stadium and a
- 21:19Speaker 1: potential name change.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Sure, so, for right now, the state law says, if
- 21:25Speaker 3: there's a piece of public property, which Angel Stadium is
- 21:28Speaker 3: because it's city owned, and it goes on the market,
- 21:33Speaker 3: because there's a housing crisis in California, the first priority
- 21:36Speaker 3: should be affordable housing. Doesn't mean the whole site has
- 21:39Speaker 3: to be affordable housing, but that has to be a
- 21:41Speaker 3: priority of development. And what this Anaheim Angels bill that's
- 21:44Speaker 3: going through Sacramento right now says is, Okay, we can
- 21:49Speaker 3: get an exemption of that law if you're willing to
- 21:52Speaker 3: change the name to the Anaheim Angels. But that would
- 21:55Speaker 3: bring up the question, Okay, well, if affordable housing isn't
- 21:58Speaker 3: the priority, what is. And so one of the ideas
- 22:02Speaker 3: floating around city Hall at Anaheim is to take at
- 22:05Speaker 3: least some of these parking lots and turn them into
- 22:08Speaker 3: a big youth sports complex. And anybody with a kid
- 22:11Speaker 3: who's played travel ball, it was all about these complexes.
- 22:14Speaker 3: You can see one in Irvine at the Great Park.
- 22:17Speaker 3: There's a huge one going in in Ontario right next
- 22:20Speaker 3: to the new minor league stadium for the Dodgers, the
- 22:23Speaker 3: Ontario Tower Buzzers, and it's all over the country. And
- 22:26Speaker 3: the thought is you bring in kids to play that's
- 22:30Speaker 3: lovely and nice and heartwarming, and you're bringing their parents
- 22:33Speaker 3: to pay lots of money because you have to have
- 22:35Speaker 3: a place to stay for the weekend and places to
- 22:38Speaker 3: go eat, and places to shop and maybe stuff to
- 22:40Speaker 3: do at night after the games. So in Anaheim this
- 22:44Speaker 3: makes a lot of sense because there are a ton
- 22:47Speaker 3: of hotel rooms available thanks to Disneyland, so they don't
- 22:52Speaker 3: have to build up all the hotels that other sites do.
- 22:55Speaker 3: In Ontario, for example, they're building hotels and the number
- 22:59Speaker 3: one source of money into the budget of the city
- 23:02Speaker 3: Anaheim is revenue from hotel rooms. So like, this would
- 23:06Speaker 3: be great. We get all these kids, we get all
- 23:08Speaker 3: their parents, we get all their money, and boy, we
- 23:11Speaker 3: could make a lot more money for ourselves.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Here's an excerpt from Shakes Strey what intrigues the city
- 23:18Speaker 1: for at least part of the parking lots around Angel
- 23:20Speaker 1: Stadium a youth sports park for all those travel ball teams.
- 23:23Speaker 1: As you mentioned, Ontario is building a one hundred and
- 23:26Speaker 1: ninety nine acre one around the minor league ballpark. Irvine
- 23:30Speaker 1: has a one hundred and ninety four acre one up
- 23:32Speaker 1: and running at its Great Park. Katie Wright, who booked
- 23:35Speaker 1: sports events for Anaheim's Tourism Bureau said there would be
- 23:40Speaker 1: a market for city built a sports park, quote the
- 23:42Speaker 1: demand for specifically soccer, baseball, and softball's tremendous rights, said
- 23:48Speaker 1: they would be filled every single weekend. I think and
- 23:51Speaker 1: as Sheik mentioned, what Anaheim has at Ontario and Irvine
- 23:55Speaker 1: do not Disneyland down the street for visiting families of
- 23:59Speaker 1: ryot of restaurants within walking distance, and hotel rooms are plenty.
- 24:03Speaker 1: One thing Shake didn't mention an Anaheim forty of the
- 24:06Speaker 1: city's general fund comes from taxes on hotel rooms. I
- 24:11Speaker 1: don't know, Shake, if this sounds like one of those
- 24:13Speaker 1: ideas it's too good to be true or it makes
- 24:14Speaker 1: too much sense. But I'm thinking about parking at the stadium,
- 24:19Speaker 1: you know. I don't know if they could erect another
- 24:22Speaker 1: parking garage like the Honda Center, did you know, next
- 24:25Speaker 1: to their building across the street. But would this thing
- 24:29Speaker 1: even realistically be feasible.
- 24:33Speaker 3: It would be feasible, I guess it would pit the
- 24:35Speaker 3: interest of the city potentially versus the interest of the
- 24:41Speaker 3: team owner. And what I mean by that is, Okay,
- 24:43Speaker 3: let's see you free up all this land for development
- 24:46Speaker 3: and you don't limit it to affordable housing first and
- 24:49Speaker 3: then everything else later. If you build a sports park,
- 24:54Speaker 3: these are very land intensive uses. It takes a lot
- 24:57Speaker 3: of acreage to have a row of baseball diamonds or
- 24:59Speaker 3: some locker fields, So the revenue from development of that
- 25:04Speaker 3: land is not going to be as great as if
- 25:06Speaker 3: you built something else. If you're the city, that's okay,
- 25:09Speaker 3: because you want the revenue from the hotel rooms. If
- 25:12Speaker 3: you're the owner of the angels and you're building around there,
- 25:15Speaker 3: you're going to make more money. Putting hotels and shops
- 25:21Speaker 3: and bars and you know, probably offices, hotels, all that
- 25:27Speaker 3: stuff is going to be much more lucrative to you
- 25:29Speaker 3: as a developer than putting in a bunch of parks.
- 25:33Speaker 3: So there's enough land where they could probably do some
- 25:36Speaker 3: of both. You're still going to need a housing component
- 25:39Speaker 3: in some way, I'm sure, because I don't think it's
- 25:41Speaker 3: politically feasible to build such a large development without any
- 25:45Speaker 3: housing in this state. I think people going crazy. So
- 25:48Speaker 3: there's ways to do it, I'm sure, and smarter people
- 25:51Speaker 3: than me can figure them out. But I think if
- 25:54Speaker 3: you're looking at a dollar versus dollar comparison, what the
- 25:58Speaker 3: city wants to do is not going to be the
- 26:00Speaker 3: best financial deal for developer.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I'm looking at sort of big macro picture here, and
- 26:06Speaker 1: maybe this is pie in the sky probably, But you mentioned,
- 26:09Speaker 1: you know, the restaurants, the shops, all the things that
- 26:12Speaker 1: we see around, you know, the Saint Louis Ballpark, the
- 26:15Speaker 1: new Atlanta Ballpark, all around the country, they're everywhere. Well,
- 26:19Speaker 1: the Ducks are doing that with the OC Vibe, right
- 26:22Speaker 1: and they have the parking garage right there next to
- 26:24Speaker 1: the fifty seven freeway. If they were to devote most
- 26:28Speaker 1: of the usable land and the Angels Stadium site for
- 26:31Speaker 1: a youth sports complex, could they sort of combine and
- 26:34Speaker 1: maybe you know, combine those two elements of the OC
- 26:37Speaker 1: Vibe with all their restaurants and shops that they're going
- 26:40Speaker 1: to have there and the parking garage. Maybe have a
- 26:42Speaker 1: shuttle or you know, somehow combine the east side of
- 26:45Speaker 1: the freeway and the west side of the freeway. Or
- 26:47Speaker 1: would that just take too much cooperation between you know,
- 26:52Speaker 1: the Sam Willie's and the Marinos. And I don't know,
- 26:55Speaker 1: I'm just thinking out a loud here shake, but it
- 26:57Speaker 1: seemed like if you had a way to sort of
- 26:58Speaker 1: go back and forth between these two things. And you know,
- 27:02Speaker 1: hockey is in the winter, baseball's in the summer. You'd
- 27:04Speaker 1: have some overlap, sure, but you know, you do have
- 27:07Speaker 1: that big parking garage, and you have all the shops
- 27:09Speaker 1: and the new restaurants that are going to be going
- 27:11Speaker 1: up in the OC Vibes. So I don't know, it
- 27:14Speaker 1: seems like that would be a win win maybe for
- 27:16Speaker 1: the Ducks, the Angels, and the city.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely. And when the Angels were still thinking about
- 27:23Speaker 3: that development that we mentioned got killed by the FBI investigation,
- 27:27Speaker 3: the Ducks and the Angels had talked and they said,
- 27:30Speaker 3: let's make sure our developments aren't going to be carbon
- 27:32Speaker 3: copies of one another. Let's do different things. So when
- 27:35Speaker 3: the OC Vibe is totally up and running, you'll see
- 27:39Speaker 3: things like a concert hall where acts that aren't big
- 27:44Speaker 3: enough to play in say Angel Stadium or the Honda
- 27:47Speaker 3: Center could still have a show. It's going to be
- 27:50Speaker 3: actually called the Golden Bear, the Hunting Sow.
- 27:55Speaker 2: The place is there, great.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Place years ago, a million years away, and I am
- 28:01Speaker 1: aging myself, but that was one of the great concerts
- 28:04Speaker 1: of my life.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Thanks for bringing that up for you. Go ahead, Yeah,
- 28:07Speaker 3: they're going to have a big food hall. It's called
- 28:09Speaker 3: Catella Commons, So they're going to have all sorts of
- 28:12Speaker 3: things where you know, you can go early and stay late,
- 28:15Speaker 3: and Angels fans would be able to walk over there
- 28:18Speaker 3: to get something to eat or drink before the game
- 28:19Speaker 3: and then you know, walk under the freeway to go
- 28:22Speaker 3: see the baseball game. The Angels plan was more about
- 28:25Speaker 3: a neighborhood. They were going to build a lot more
- 28:27Speaker 3: homes or put it like a grocery store. They'd have
- 28:31Speaker 3: things for neighbors to do, community members as opposed to
- 28:35Speaker 3: just an entertainment thing. So clearly they could come back
- 28:38Speaker 3: with something like that. And you know, I think you
- 28:40Speaker 3: didn't spell it out, but I think it goes to
- 28:43Speaker 3: if the Angels come on the market in terms of development,
- 28:47Speaker 3: who would the best possible buyer be. It would be
- 28:49Speaker 3: Henry Samuellie to integrate all that help. He's told me
- 28:52Speaker 3: repeatedly he's not interested, but you know, things change, you
- 28:56Speaker 3: never know.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the synergy makes too much much sense in
- 29:00Speaker 1: the Samuelli's apparently having the money. So yeah, they would
- 29:03Speaker 1: be pretty good stories of the Angels moving forward. But
- 29:06Speaker 1: that's for another show. Hey, Shake, I really appreciate your
- 29:09Speaker 1: time and input here. I do want to remind in
- 29:12Speaker 1: Halo Territory fans we have merchandise at Halo Territory shop
- 29:17Speaker 1: dot com. You can get hats, sweatshirts, t shirts, hoodies.
