- 0:00Meggan: Hey everyone, and welcome back to Travel Tip Tuesday on the Travel Mug Podcast.
- 0:06Jenn: My favorite Tuesday.
- 0:07Jenn: Meggan: I know a tip for Yeah.
- 0:11Meggan: Um, I, Meggan would like to talk about water so I know what, but I drink a lot of water.
- 0:18Meggan: I'm super duper hydrated.
- 0:20Meggan: And I don't really have much anxiety, but having available drinking water, Is definitely one of the few things on my list that I get like anxious about when traveling.
- 0:29Meggan: Luckily drinking water and rehydrating very easily done.
- 0:33Meggan: Like you can catch back up on it very quickly.
- 0:36Meggan: Peter has reminded me of this.
- 0:38Meggan: So many times chill out.
- 0:40Meggan: We'll have some water in a minute, um,. . But as we're getting ready for our trip to Cuba in February, we both prepared this time around in a couple of different ways.
- 0:51Meggan: So we've both this time gotten our Twinrix vaccinations.
- 0:55Meggan: That's for hepatitis A and B.
- 0:58Meggan: I got mine earlier in the year.
- 0:59Meggan: Peter just finished up with his, so he's ready to go.
- 1:02Meggan: . Up until this year we've traveled a lot and gone to the Caribbean a lot as well and not gotten sick myself personally from anything, there never been an issue for me, but Peter does sometimes get sick when we go to Caribbean countries.
- 1:17Jenn: Mm-hmm.
- 1:17Jenn: .
- 1:17Jenn: Meggan: So we're going for two weeks and it was probably a good idea to protect against Hep A and B which of course Twinrix does, and the shot supposedly last a lifetime so you don't have to get more.
- 1:29Jenn: We also plan to get a prescription for Dukoral to help ward off any other stomach bugs as much as possible.
- 1:36Jenn: Yeah.
- 1:36Meggan: And we'll take over the counter of products with us to have on hand as well.
- 1:39Meggan: So a lot of this does tie back to the water situation.
- 1:43Jenn: Right.
- 1:43Meggan: So when you're going to places that don't have the same standards in terms of water let's say as North America, cause that's what we're used to.
- 1:52Jenn: Yeah.
- 1:52Meggan: And often, of course, through no fault of their own, we're just not used to what's in their water.
- 1:57Meggan: So drinking it safely is probably not really an option.
- 2:01Meggan: So if you're going to a resort, and you're likely gonna have drinks, alcohol or not, you're still gonna have something to drink.
- 2:08Meggan: So either kind of two options.
- 2:10Meggan: You ask for no ice or if you have ice, my advice is to prepare in advance before the trip, doing the things I've already mentioned.
- 2:19Meggan: Because otherwise you're kind of taking a little bit of a chance.
- 2:22Meggan: Drinking bottled water is so key on resorts and there's so much plastic and it bothers me so much, but really there's no other choice and I have to choose hydration
- 2:34Jenn: fair.
- 2:35Meggan: But really that should be the only water you're drinking consistently when you go to a Caribbean country when brushing your teeth don't drink that water either.
- 2:44Meggan: Some people don't even use it to brush their teeth.
- 2:46Meggan: They actually use their bottled water to do so.
- 2:48Meggan: I don't bother.
- 2:49Meggan: I've never had an issue, but whatever your comfort zone is.
- 2:53Meggan: And I also make it a habit no matter where I'm traveling, literally anywhere in the world, as I always ask at the front desk of hotels and inns, if you can drink their water
- 3:02Jenn: mm-hmm.
- 3:03Meggan: So not only is this about safety, but also it can save money, especially if you have a reusable, reusable water bottle with you.
- 3:09Meggan: Why not refill it for free.
- 3:11Jenn: Yes.
- 3:12Meggan: You know?
- 3:13Jenn: Love that.
- 3:13Meggan: Um, Now the only place I do not drink water as much is road trips.
- 3:18Meggan: There's nothing more annoying than having to stop and use the washroom frequently.
- 3:22Meggan: So for that, I do have as little as water as possible.
- 3:25Meggan: Those are usually the moments when before we arrive at our destination that Peter's like.
- 3:29Meggan: , you're gonna have some water in a bit.
- 3:31Meggan: It's fine.
- 3:32Meggan: But I don't know.
- 3:33Meggan: So I, I guess overall, I, I, I think there's a risk no matter where you go, but I think if you prepare yourself properly you'll be fine.
- 3:40Meggan: So Jenn is like water ever a concern or even on your mind when you travel?
- 3:45Jenn: So, no.
- 3:47Jenn: But yeah, so I mostly, I've traveled within North America and Europe, so I haven't been like, super concerned about like accessible, safe drinking water because it's pretty good.
- 3:59Meggan: Right.
- 4:00Jenn: That being said, I'm a chronically dehydrated person, so I probably need you to come around and be like, drink more water.
- 4:06Jenn: Drink more water.
- 4:07Meggan: Oh, ok.
- 4:08Jenn: I'm working on, I'm working on it.
- 4:09Meggan: Alright.
- 4:10Jenn: So I, I have to be really careful that I'm staying hydrated enough.
- 4:13Jenn: Right.
- 4:13Jenn: And we just talked about vegas and how hot it is.
- 4:17Jenn: And I had to be really careful.
- 4:20Jenn: I've already told you my Vegas story of my arrival day.
- 4:23Jenn: There's an arrival day travel tip Tuesday, a couple ones back if you wanna go listen to that story.
- 4:28Meggan: It's a doozy
- 4:29Jenn: because she wasn't pretty . Um, But it could have probably been avoided if I had just drank some water.
- 4:38Jenn: So yeah, and, and just be mindful if you're going to somewhere hot like the Caribbean or Vegas or Florida or whatever.
- 4:45Jenn: And if you're being more active than normal, if you're swimming, if you're walking a lot you should probably drink some water and you should also probably consider electrolytes.
- 4:53Jenn: So I like to travel with, it's called Vega Sport Powder.
- 4:57Jenn: You can get it in the organic section at Superstore here in Nova Scotia.
- 5:03Jenn: You can order it online but you put it in your water.
- 5:05Jenn: It makes it taste better.
- 5:06Jenn: Plus its electrolytes and it's not as much sugar as like a Gatorade.
- 5:12Meggan: Um, I never thought of doing this before.
- 5:14Meggan: I think I'm gonna take some with me when we go.
- 5:16Jenn: Yeah.
- 5:18Jenn: Yeah, they, I,
- 5:19Meggan: I could use an electrolyte, I'm sure.
- 5:21Jenn: I'm sure you can.
- 5:22Jenn: And I think some places sell like the little little tubes where you just like rip off the top and dump the whole thing.
- 5:28Jenn: Oh yeah.
- 5:29Jenn: And I have like a container and some people can't see me, but it's like a smallish container that's like, doesn't take up a lot of space and you just scoop it out.
- 5:37Jenn: Yeah, I really like it.
- 5:39Jenn: So,
- 5:40Meggan: I thank you.
- 5:40Meggan: Thank you for the tip, Jenn.
- 5:42Jenn: Oh, you're welcome,.
- 5:43Jenn: Meggan: I love that.
- 5:44Jenn: I'm glad I could help.
- 5:46Meggan: Wonderful.
- 5:47Meggan: Well, this has been fabulous.
