- 0:11What is going on everybody?
- 0:16Welcome to the Clydesdale media podcast.
- 0:41And we're so pumped to have
- 0:42today the North America
- 0:44West semifinal champion and
- 0:47two-time CrossFit Games athlete,
- 0:49Abby Domet with us.
- 0:50What's going on, Abby?
- 0:52Nothing much.
- 0:53Just here enjoying my Sunday,
- 0:55talking to you.
- 0:56How are you?
- 0:58I'm good.
- 0:59I'm good.
- 0:59It's so much fun.
- 1:01You know, we talked to you years ago now.
- 1:06in our semifinal series.
- 1:08And to watch your
- 1:10development from that first
- 1:12time we talked to you,
- 1:13I think it was 2022?
- 1:15Yes,
- 1:17this was the first podcast I'd done ever.
- 1:22And it was 2022 before semifinals.
- 1:26Yeah.
- 1:27And then you did good that first year.
- 1:33You did better the second
- 1:35year and qualified at Pasadena.
- 1:40And then this year you win semifinals.
- 1:44So what has that road been
- 1:46like from just starting,
- 1:50making your first semifinal,
- 1:52then to making your first games,
- 1:54and to winning your first semifinal?
- 1:58Um, I feel like for me,
- 2:00the way I explain it is
- 2:01just going in order of how
- 2:05we kind of had it planned to do.
- 2:07Um, you know,
- 2:10that first year that I made semifinals,
- 2:13it was like, okay, yeah.
- 2:15I mean,
- 2:16the goal obviously is to make the games,
- 2:18but we knew like,
- 2:20that's probably not going to happen.
- 2:22That's going to be very hard.
- 2:23Um,
- 2:24And so I kind of just took
- 2:26whatever I could get.
- 2:27And then it was like, okay,
- 2:28well next year I'm going to
- 2:29make the games.
- 2:31And that's what happened.
- 2:33And then the year after that, it was like,
- 2:34well, I need to do better than that.
- 2:36I want to make the games,
- 2:37but I also want to kind of
- 2:38prove to myself that I
- 2:40don't have to just kind of
- 2:42get one of the last spots
- 2:43I'd rather get in the top three or,
- 2:46you know, something like that.
- 2:47So yeah, it was literally just,
- 2:50just going in order of the trajectory of
- 2:53of progression really so so
- 2:57when you're in it and your
- 2:59goal is to make the games
- 3:01like last year let's go
- 3:02back to last year your goal
- 3:04is to make the games you
- 3:05make the games and then now
- 3:08the games are of fruition
- 3:10and you have to go how do
- 3:11you switch the goal in two
- 3:14months from you put all
- 3:16this effort into making the
- 3:17games to then I want to do
- 3:19well at the games you're
- 3:21talking about last year
- 3:23Yeah.
- 3:25Um, well,
- 3:26I think at that point it was kind
- 3:28of just like,
- 3:30it was a little bit kind of
- 3:31survival mode at that point.
- 3:33Um,
- 3:34cause you put so much into just making
- 3:37it where coming off of that, you're like,
- 3:40okay,
- 3:40now I have to rebuild and recover
- 3:43from everything that I just
- 3:44did and try and do all,
- 3:47do it all again and do even
- 3:48more for the games that
- 3:51were a couple months after.
- 3:53Um,
- 3:54and so I feel like in a situation like
- 3:55that, where you're like, okay,
- 3:59peaked out for semifinals
- 4:01rebuilding after that,
- 4:03it definitely takes some time.
- 4:05Um,
- 4:07and I feel like you're kind of just
- 4:08like pulling from sort of
- 4:10nothing at that point.
- 4:11So just kind of,
- 4:13you're just in survival mode.
- 4:14At least I was just doing
- 4:15whatever I could to try and
- 4:18gain more fitness or be
- 4:20better for the final event.
- 4:25But yeah,
- 4:26that's why I feel like this year
- 4:27is totally different
- 4:28because it wasn't like that
- 4:31for semifinals.
- 4:32There wasn't like this huge
- 4:35rebuild afterwards.
- 4:36It was kind of just like
- 4:37building off of each other.
- 4:41The reason I find it
- 4:44fascinating is I talked to
- 4:46Colt Mertens the first year
- 4:47he made the games right after he got cut.
- 4:51And he said that you work so
- 4:55hard to make the games and
- 4:57semifinals are so different
- 4:59that you have to work on like X, Y,
- 5:02and Z. Then you make the
- 5:03games and all of a sudden
- 5:05now you have to work on A, B,
- 5:06and C. And you weren't able
- 5:09to do that because your
- 5:10main goal was just making
- 5:12it to the games.
- 5:14Right.
- 5:15And even like this year,
- 5:16how they released the workout so early,
- 5:19it was kind of hard to be like, okay,
- 5:22we want to like work on
- 5:24these workouts that we're
- 5:26going to have to do at semifinals,
- 5:27but it's so early.
- 5:29We still need to train and
- 5:31we have so many other
- 5:32things we need to do.
- 5:32Cause you can't just do
- 5:34those workouts over and
- 5:34over for three weeks, you know,
- 5:38mentally it'll make you crazy,
- 5:39but also physically it'll
- 5:40take a toll on you.
- 5:42just from reworking the same
- 5:43muscles over and over.
- 5:45Um,
- 5:46and so that was just kind of something
- 5:47interesting that happened this year.
- 5:49Um, cause yeah, then after that,
- 5:51you're like, all right, well,
- 5:54they're going to be testing
- 5:55a whole slew of different
- 5:56things at the games anyways.
- 5:59Um,
- 6:00but that's something I've noticed this
- 6:02year, as far as open quarters,
- 6:04semis games,
- 6:06I feel like all the
- 6:07progressions have been very clear cut.
- 6:10Um,
- 6:11And not like super obvious,
- 6:13but you can kind of expect like, oh my,
- 6:16my cat food is coming out right now.
- 6:19You can kind of expect like
- 6:21what's coming in a way, like not exactly,
- 6:24because there's going to be
- 6:25surprises here and there,
- 6:26but I feel like at least
- 6:27for the open quarters and semis,
- 6:29you could kind of expect
- 6:32the movements that were like, okay,
- 6:33this is the next step.
- 6:34This is the next step.
- 6:35This is what comes after.
- 6:36And so that's why I'm really
- 6:38interested to see how they
- 6:39do the games this year because
- 6:41just because it feels like
- 6:42it's been different from
- 6:44any other year as far as programming,
- 6:46as far as how clear the
- 6:49progressions have been.
- 6:50Yeah, and you have a new venue,
- 6:53a new location.
- 6:54They say it's primarily
- 6:57going to be done indoors,
- 6:59which is very different from past games.
- 7:02But it was just announced
- 7:04they're going to do a
- 7:04Friday Night Lights on a football field.
- 7:06Yes.
- 7:07I'm so excited for that.
- 7:11It's so cool.
- 7:11That was something cause I
- 7:13loved the outdoor events
- 7:15and I love competing outside.
- 7:16That was something like at semis this year,
- 7:18I was like, man,
- 7:19it's so cool that we get to,
- 7:22we're the only people who
- 7:22actually get to be outside
- 7:24the whole time.
- 7:25Um, but yeah,
- 7:28as soon as they announced the
- 7:29Friday night lights thing, I was like, Oh,
- 7:31let's go.
- 7:32That's awesome.
- 7:33And it's cool that it is at night versus,
- 7:36I think we're all kind of
- 7:37thinking there's going to
- 7:38be one outdoor event, if any,
- 7:41and it'll be early in the
- 7:43morning and then that's it.
- 7:44Everything else will be inside the arena.
- 7:46And so it's cool that it's like, okay,
- 7:48we get an event, it's at night,
- 7:50it's outdoors, it's on the field.
- 7:52I think that's really cool.
- 7:53Well, and you live there in Texas,
- 7:56so that's kind of a home
- 7:58field advantage for you.
- 8:00Oh yeah.
- 8:01I mean, cause I'm in San Antonio.
- 8:02It's like,
- 8:03four and a half five ish
- 8:05hours south of Fort Worth and Dallas.
- 8:08Um, so yeah, we, we get to,
- 8:11we're just going to drive
- 8:12up there and bring all our
- 8:14stuff and we're close by.
- 8:15I've been telling everybody, I'm like,
- 8:17guys, like,
- 8:17it's probably never going to
- 8:18be here ever again.
- 8:19So take advantage.
- 8:21And if you live nearby,
- 8:22just get your ticket and go.
- 8:25Well, especially for those outdoor events,
- 8:27you're used to the heat.
- 8:29So, like,
- 8:30it's like you and Ariel and those
- 8:32people who live in Texas, like,
- 8:34you get to train in that
- 8:35weather year-round.
- 8:38Yeah, I mean,
- 8:40that's definitely a big
- 8:41reason why we were like, oh, man,
- 8:43it'd be cool if there was
- 8:44more outdoor events because
- 8:46that would be such a huge
- 8:48advantage to us.
- 8:50But I guess we have to understand that...
- 8:54they can't do that to some of the people.
- 8:57So, yeah.
- 8:59But you have like,
- 9:01I've been to Wisconsin the
- 9:02last couple of years.
- 9:04It has not been cool in
- 9:07Wisconsin in August.
- 9:10I mean, it's, it's summer,
- 9:14but like whenever we arrived there,
- 9:16cause I mean, so I'm from the Midwest,
- 9:19but I hadn't been there in, you know,
- 9:21several years or however long and,
- 9:23whenever we went back and we
- 9:24were in Madison last year, I was like,
- 9:26man, I just, I miss this amazing weather.
- 9:29And like,
- 9:30just the grass is so lush and like,
- 9:33just at night, it's like chilly.
- 9:36You can wear a jacket.
- 9:37I was like, this is amazing.
- 9:38Um, versus like here,
- 9:41it's definitely a bit warmer,
- 9:44but that's actually something that, uh,
- 9:45we were talking about right
- 9:46before we got on about the rain.
- 9:48And I was like,
- 9:50Man, like, yes, I mean, it's summer here.
- 9:54It feels like summer.
- 9:55It is hot,
- 9:56but it is nothing compared to last year.
- 9:59Like last year was
- 10:00unbearable as far as the temperature.
- 10:04Yeah.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:06And we're getting it in the
- 10:07Midwest this year where
- 10:09it's been 95 the last week
- 10:11and a half and no rain.
- 10:13Yeah.
- 10:14It's almost like the United
- 10:15States is flipped upside down.
- 10:17That's crazy.
- 10:18Cause like even, I don't know,
- 10:21it's just so weird.
- 10:22Cause that's like this far
- 10:24into this late spring, early summer,
- 10:27it never rains.
- 10:28And there's been a couple of
- 10:30times where it's rained.
- 10:32And like,
- 10:32I feel like last year from April
- 10:35to September, it was,
- 10:37it was over a hundred like every day,
- 10:40like every single day.
- 10:42And then this year,
- 10:43like it started feeling
- 10:44like that a little bit in April.
- 10:46Like we had some days that
- 10:46were really hot or just
- 10:48like really humid.
- 10:49And I was like, oh man,
- 10:50like this can't be happening already.
- 10:51Like it's too soon for this.
- 10:52Like I'm not ready for this yet.
- 10:55And then all of a sudden,
- 10:57like we had a few days
- 10:57where it was like 101 and
- 10:58then it just kind of dropped.
- 11:01And lately, I mean, it's in the 90s,
- 11:03but I was expecting like
- 11:05106 to 109 every single day.
- 11:07And it hasn't been like that.
- 11:09So I'm very thankful.
- 11:11yeah so let's rewind a bit
- 11:14you go into west coast this
- 11:15year and you said it was
- 11:17different like you because
- 11:20of what you've established
- 11:22did you feel less pressure
- 11:24about making the games yes
- 11:28because that was the thing
- 11:29when I whenever I went to
- 11:30semis like there was like
- 11:32no doubt that I would make
- 11:35the games like there was no
- 11:36doubt I'd be in the top eight you know um
- 11:39Cause that's the thing I
- 11:40that's like the goal of Sandy's right.
- 11:42It's like,
- 11:42that's your ticket to the games.
- 11:43That's how you get there.
- 11:45Um, but I wasn't even thinking like, oh,
- 11:49I hope I make it again.
- 11:50Like I was like, oh no,
- 11:51I'm making it again.
- 11:52Of course the goal was like,
- 11:54I want it to be podium.
- 11:56At least I was like for sure
- 11:57in the top three.
- 11:59Um,
- 12:00and then as a weekend kind of went on
- 12:02and the goal kind of
- 12:03changed a little bit and I was like, Ooh,
- 12:06maybe I could win this thing.
- 12:09Was there pressure on you
- 12:11winning or just it was a possibility?
- 12:14No pressure.
- 12:17I mean,
- 12:18I have goals for myself and I put
- 12:21pressure on myself,
- 12:22but there was nobody like
- 12:24putting pressure on me.
- 12:26It was definitely when I
- 12:29realized it was a possibility.
- 12:30I feel like before the final, I was like,
- 12:33OK, well,
- 12:34I'm for sure going to get second.
- 12:36I'm not going to do any worse than that.
- 12:38But I knew that if the
- 12:39weekend ended and if I ended up in second,
- 12:42I would have been a little bit like,
- 12:43I would have felt like I
- 12:48left something on the table.
- 12:53You're very competitive.
- 12:54It's very obvious when I
- 12:56look at your Instagram and
- 12:58when I've talked to you
- 12:59over the last couple of years,
- 13:01you love to compete.
- 13:03Would the disappointment
- 13:04have been more that or more
- 13:08the loss of money?
- 13:15Um, that, that maybe, because I feel like,
- 13:21I don't know what the second place gets.
- 13:24Um, but it's like,
- 13:26if it's something that's
- 13:27like a very small,
- 13:31I think it's seven grand.
- 13:33Okay, so the difference of, like,
- 13:35three grand.
- 13:36Yeah.
- 13:36That would have been annoying, I think.
- 13:39Like, I've been like, oh,
- 13:39if I would have just done this different,
- 13:41then I could have, like,
- 13:41made a little bit more money.
- 13:43I think that definitely would affect.
- 13:45But, no, I just, I knew I could win it,
- 13:49you know?
- 13:51Like, why not?
- 13:54Yeah.
- 13:55Well, and I'm not trying to, like,
- 13:57put a financial thing on this,
- 13:59but you guys get very...
- 14:01small op there's only a few
- 14:03opportunities for you to
- 14:04make money to support
- 14:05yourself for the year most
- 14:08of it is done through
- 14:09sponsorships and you get
- 14:11very little prize money
- 14:12throughout the year yeah
- 14:15competitions is definitely
- 14:16not where you're gonna be
- 14:17making the bulk of your
- 14:18money it's definitely gonna
- 14:19be through your sponsors um
- 14:23but yeah I feel like for
- 14:25something like semi-finals
- 14:26it's definitely kind of or
- 14:28even just competitions it's
- 14:29really more about the win than the money
- 14:32Because it's not like we're
- 14:34getting 100K to win semifinals.
- 14:3710K is like... I feel like
- 14:40that makes it seem smaller
- 14:42than what it is.
- 14:46Yeah.
- 14:47But 10K is still a nice
- 14:49chunk for a weekend of work.
- 14:51It's a nice chunk for a weekend of work.
- 14:53But I feel like for how much
- 14:55work that we put into it
- 14:56and how big it is,
- 14:57I do think it kind of...
- 15:01makes it seem like less.
- 15:04So I wasn't going to go here,
- 15:06but I'm going to go here now.
- 15:07I was talking to Alex Kazan a week ago,
- 15:10and we were talking about
- 15:13the difference between
- 15:14sponsorship money and prize money,
- 15:16and that now there are
- 15:17these new things popping up
- 15:21on the internet, like Kill Taylor,
- 15:23like Reps Ahead,
- 15:25like these different ways
- 15:27to make money as a
- 15:28CrossFitter and get exposure.
- 15:31And then there was this
- 15:32Taylor versus world where
- 15:33Taylor took on Jason Hopper,
- 15:35Dallin pepper and Colton
- 15:37Mertens and quarterfinals.
- 15:39They broadcast it live and
- 15:40they all won prize money.
- 15:44And I asked her,
- 15:45would you rather earn money
- 15:47through competing,
- 15:49like doing quarterfinals live,
- 15:51or would you rather get to
- 15:52sponsorship deals where you
- 15:55have to be on Instagram all
- 15:56the time and posting your stuff?
- 15:59And she said,
- 16:00I'd rather win it through competition.
- 16:02Yeah.
- 16:03But there just aren't that
- 16:04many opportunities.
- 16:06I definitely agree with that.
- 16:07I feel like, I don't know, having to...
- 16:12do all like be on Instagram
- 16:13all the time and social media,
- 16:15like that just,
- 16:17it becomes very tedious and it, it just,
- 16:21it's, it's work.
- 16:21It just, it's,
- 16:22it's just a work that you have to do.
- 16:24Um,
- 16:25if you could just go and just compete
- 16:27and make money through that, I,
- 16:29I would definitely prefer that.
- 16:32Um,
- 16:33I do love my sponsors and I think it's
- 16:35awesome that we get to do that, but, um,
- 16:40yeah, I think,
- 16:43I would choose just
- 16:44competing and making money through that.
- 16:48If you were given the opportunity to do,
- 16:51say,
- 16:51quarterfinals live and a chance to
- 16:55earn prize money,
- 16:56would you be game for that?
- 16:57I think I'd be pretty cool.
- 17:00Especially now because I'm a
- 17:02lot more confident during
- 17:04that stage of the season.
- 17:05So I'd be willing to do that.
- 17:07Whereas a couple years ago,
- 17:09I would have been...
- 17:10like too nervous of like, oh, okay,
- 17:12are my scores going to be good enough?
- 17:14Am I for sure in?
- 17:15But now I'm like, okay.
- 17:18It's funny because Carolyn
- 17:20Prevo is my co-host on Sunday night.
- 17:22And she said that she feels
- 17:25that women hold their
- 17:26scores closer to the vest
- 17:28than the men do.
- 17:29Like the men...
- 17:31like the men talks back and they,
- 17:33and they trash talk all the time,
- 17:36but the women are very
- 17:37secretive about their
- 17:39scores and where they are
- 17:40in the leaderboard.
- 17:42And if she believes that
- 17:43less women would be
- 17:44inclined to do the live quarterfinal,
- 17:47I do think that like,
- 17:51it would have to be
- 17:51athletes who were like very
- 17:52confident that they're for
- 17:53sure making it.
- 17:55I do think that would matter.
- 17:56Um,
- 17:58as far as the women, but it's just,
- 18:00it's funny you bring that up.
- 18:01Cause I I've heard that.
- 18:03And I've heard that through
- 18:04like qualifiers for just
- 18:07like random off season
- 18:09comps all the time.
- 18:10Like my guy friends versus
- 18:11my girlfriends are like, yeah,
- 18:13like the women,
- 18:14they never want to say
- 18:15their scores or unless
- 18:16they're like saying it to a
- 18:18guy or that they're not
- 18:19competing against or something like that.
- 18:20And I was like, huh, that's interesting.
- 18:24But yeah,
- 18:25I definitely feel like whoever you choose,
- 18:27it would have to be just
- 18:29people who are like, okay,
- 18:31I'm for sure in or for sure
- 18:33going to be in the final
- 18:34heat or something like that.
- 18:38Yeah.
- 18:38Well, everybody I've talked to were like,
- 18:40I'd be game for it.
- 18:42But those people are all
- 18:43like people that like Emily
- 18:45Rolfe and Ariel and Alex
- 18:47and they're all like, yeah, I'm worried.
- 18:51Yeah.
- 18:52Especially at the quarterfinal level.
- 18:54Like you guys will know
- 18:55you're making semis.
- 18:57Yeah.
- 18:58Yeah, for sure.
- 18:59So I think it's going to be
- 19:01interesting to see where we
- 19:02go over the next couple of years,
- 19:04because I think the more
- 19:05media outlets there are,
- 19:06the more opportunities like
- 19:08that are going to be out
- 19:09there because of the
- 19:11success of what people saw
- 19:13with Taylor versus world.
- 19:15Yeah.
- 19:16Yeah.
- 19:17I think so.
- 19:18I think what those guys have been doing,
- 19:21I think it's great for the sport.
- 19:22I think it's, it's super entertaining.
- 19:25And I mean,
- 19:25it's also entertaining for
- 19:26people who might not be
- 19:29involved in CrossFit at all.
- 19:31You know, they're like, oh, okay.
- 19:32They're just throwing down
- 19:33and they're working out and
- 19:34there's money on the table
- 19:35and you show up and do it.
- 19:38Um, I think it's great.
- 19:40We'll definitely see more of
- 19:41that stuff pop up here and there.
- 19:43When I think it's a lot
- 19:44easier to explain to your
- 19:45friends what CrossFit the
- 19:47sport is by showing them
- 19:49this one event that say, Hey,
- 19:52you got to sit through this
- 19:53weekend of four events or
- 19:55four days of 15 events.
- 19:57And at the end you'll kind
- 19:58of see who wins.
- 20:00Right.
- 20:01Right.
- 20:01Like it,
- 20:02it's much quicker and easier to
- 20:04show than like the CrossFit games.
- 20:07Yeah, I think so too.
- 20:08Um,
- 20:11Yeah.
- 20:11Even like the amount of
- 20:13times people ask me, they're like,
- 20:15oh wait, so,
- 20:16so it's different events every time,
- 20:18right?
- 20:18Like it's, it's different events.
- 20:19Like they, they still like,
- 20:20don't get that.
- 20:21Like, yes,
- 20:22it's different events every time,
- 20:24but I do think showing them
- 20:25something like that would
- 20:27definitely help be like, oh yeah,
- 20:30you just do a workout and whoever wins.
- 20:32Okay.
- 20:32You have a better score and
- 20:33then multiply that by however many,
- 20:36and then, okay,
- 20:36that's the CrossFit games.
- 20:37Like, all right.
- 20:39Yeah.
- 20:40Yeah.
- 20:40I think.
- 20:41And it, and it shows the beauty of it,
- 20:44right?
- 20:44Like there's this big
- 20:45competition between high
- 20:46rocks and what we do and like, yeah,
- 20:49they do the same thing every time,
- 20:51but that can get boring
- 20:53over time if you're not into that, right?
- 20:57It changes all the time and
- 20:58that's why it's more well-rounded.
- 21:01Yeah.
- 21:01I mean,
- 21:02when I look at something like high rocks,
- 21:04to me,
- 21:04that's just the same as like
- 21:05signing up for
- 21:07a half marathon or a 5k or
- 21:10you know I mean obviously
- 21:12you're doing more than just
- 21:13running but that's I see
- 21:15that as like kind of the
- 21:17same thing you know you're
- 21:18signing up for a race or a
- 21:20better comparison would be
- 21:21the I don't know what
- 21:23they're called where you're
- 21:24running through mud and
- 21:26climbing walls and you know
- 21:28like stuff like that yeah
- 21:30spartan race which they had
- 21:32their heyday for a year or
- 21:33two too and then kind of fell off
- 21:36I think that's where High
- 21:37Rocks is headed as well,
- 21:38but I could be wrong.
- 21:40Yeah.
- 21:41I mean, to me, it sounds fun to go do,
- 21:45like go do it one time or whatever,
- 21:48but I couldn't see myself
- 21:50doing it like all the time
- 21:53or like as my lifestyle necessarily.
- 21:56Yeah.
- 21:58So it's funny.
- 22:01I was watching behind the
- 22:02scenes West coast today.
- 22:04The new episode dropped like overnight,
- 22:06I think.
- 22:08And you're in there and you're,
- 22:10you say to Savan that this
- 22:13is the chillest you've ever seen.
- 22:16You've ever seen a semifinal
- 22:18B it wasn't just you.
- 22:20It was like the whole thing.
- 22:21And that was on Saturday.
- 22:24Did that stay that way the
- 22:26whole way through the weekend?
- 22:27Yeah.
- 22:29I definitely felt like that
- 22:30on the first couple of days.
- 22:32And I don't know if it was
- 22:33just cause we were outside
- 22:35and we were like working out,
- 22:36we have the sunshine,
- 22:38like it's great weather
- 22:39where there's like grass and trees.
- 22:42Um, it changed a little bit on day three.
- 22:45Cause that's kind of where
- 22:46you could see there's more
- 22:47tension in the air.
- 22:48Like people were starting to,
- 22:50it was settling in whether
- 22:51they were not going to make
- 22:52it or they're on the line.
- 22:54Um,
- 22:56but it was still, it was still very pretty,
- 23:00like a relaxed environment,
- 23:01at least for myself.
- 23:03And part of me thinks like,
- 23:04I do think it was the environment,
- 23:06but I also think that I was
- 23:08just much more relaxed.
- 23:10Um,
- 23:10I used to get so much more nervous when
- 23:12I competed,
- 23:13especially before the first events.
- 23:15Um, but now I'm just so much more in tune.
- 23:19It's almost like a meditation for me.
- 23:21So,
- 23:24yeah,
- 23:24I feel like I can actually be like
- 23:26calm and relax and just do my thing.
- 23:30But I just,
- 23:30I really felt those vibes from everybody,
- 23:32at least for the first
- 23:33couple of days and a little
- 23:34bit on the other day.
- 23:36It's funny because seeing you at the semis,
- 23:40I've always felt you to be chill.
- 23:43Yeah.
- 23:43Like you, even you might be tear,
- 23:47teared up inside or tore up inside.
- 23:49Right.
- 23:50But out outside or externally,
- 23:52you always look chill.
- 23:56Yeah.
- 23:56I mean,
- 23:57I do think like you kind of want to
- 23:58present yourself that way.
- 24:00Um, like there's sometimes like,
- 24:03even like years ago,
- 24:04I would like tell myself, I'd be like,
- 24:06okay,
- 24:06I'm just going to admit it to myself
- 24:09that I'm nervous.
- 24:10I'll say it one time and
- 24:12then I'm going to let it go.
- 24:14And that was something that
- 24:15I would have to do with myself.
- 24:16Be like, it's building up,
- 24:18it's building up.
- 24:19And I'd be like,
- 24:21okay, if I'm just going to like admit it,
- 24:23look in the mirror and be like, yes,
- 24:25you're very nervous right now.
- 24:26Let it go.
- 24:28And then it would help me tremendously.
- 24:31Now I don't have to do that so much.
- 24:34It's more like, okay,
- 24:35before the competition starts,
- 24:36if I feel I'll start
- 24:37getting that like subconscious,
- 24:39like build of like,
- 24:40I feel my stomach is like
- 24:41rising to my throat and
- 24:43I'll just like close my
- 24:44eyes for a second.
- 24:44Just like take a couple of just big,
- 24:47deep breaths and then be like, all right,
- 24:49let's go.
- 24:50And then I'm like, good from there on out.
- 24:54Do you make a concerted
- 24:55effort not to have too many
- 24:57highs as well?
- 24:58Because even like when you
- 24:59have like a great event,
- 25:00I don't see you like
- 25:02pumping your chest or doing
- 25:05anything like that.
- 25:05You just kind of cross the line,
- 25:08raise your hands and get
- 25:10your water and you're done.
- 25:14Cause I never,
- 25:15I've never had an event win also.
- 25:17I feel maybe that would change things.
- 25:19And I do,
- 25:20I do eventually want to be that
- 25:22person who can have event wins,
- 25:24but maybe I'm just not there yet.
- 25:27I feel like I'm just so kind
- 25:29of like right and smooth, um,
- 25:31which is great, but it would be cool to,
- 25:34you know,
- 25:35win an event or two here and there.
- 25:38Um,
- 25:40But yeah,
- 25:40even if I do something where I'm like, oh,
- 25:43I was really proud of how that went.
- 25:46I've learned,
- 25:47especially from the games
- 25:48last year to not let it, you know,
- 25:51bring me way sky high
- 25:53because that's just so much energy.
- 25:56Like,
- 25:57and this is something I've said before,
- 25:58like when you have a really
- 26:00bad event or a really good event,
- 26:01whether you're super,
- 26:02super up and positive or super,
- 26:04super negative,
- 26:05both of them just drain your energy.
- 26:07And the best thing to do is
- 26:08just stay neutral the whole time.
- 26:10Otherwise,
- 26:10you're just like this all weekend long.
- 26:13And it's exhausting.
- 26:15And it'll take a lot more from you.
- 26:20It's so funny because I
- 26:21watch a lot of pro sports, right?
- 26:23And the athletes will say
- 26:25that they have to stay even keel.
- 26:29They can't get too far up or too far down.
- 26:31And the great ones all say that.
- 26:35So you're kind of in this
- 26:38like Catch-22 where you're
- 26:41in a sport where to be the
- 26:43most well-rounded is the best.
- 26:47And that may mean that you
- 26:49don't get event wins.
- 26:51A la Justin Medeiros, right?
- 26:55Two-time CrossFit Games champion,
- 26:58one event win.
- 27:00Right.
- 27:03How do you balance that?
- 27:07So it does depend.
- 27:08So it worked out for me at
- 27:12semis to just keep
- 27:15everything in the top 10
- 27:16and then end up on top at
- 27:20the end of the weekend.
- 27:21Now,
- 27:23depending if I was competing against
- 27:26everybody that would have
- 27:27looked a lot different or
- 27:29if I was competing elsewhere or, you know,
- 27:33cause if you look at like Tia Toomey,
- 27:36she wins,
- 27:37but she also wins a lot of events.
- 27:39Like most events she ends up winning.
- 27:42And so it's like,
- 27:42if you're competing against
- 27:43people where they can win,
- 27:46like their idea or their
- 27:49version of being
- 27:50well-rounded is by winning
- 27:52so much where it's like first place,
- 27:54first place, first place, second place,
- 27:55first place versus like
- 27:58sixth place across the board.
- 28:00It's a little different.
- 28:02So I feel like it worked out
- 28:03in my favor this time.
- 28:06But I do think at a bigger
- 28:09stage or at some point down the road,
- 28:11that needs to be better.
- 28:16Do you look at,
- 28:17so like we have a stats and
- 28:19information person who did
- 28:21a combined leaderboard for all the semis.
- 28:24Oh, yeah.
- 28:26Do you ever look at those?
- 28:29Sometimes,
- 28:29even if there wasn't somebody
- 28:33out there doing those stats,
- 28:35sometimes I'll still be like, OK,
- 28:39how did this end up here or there,
- 28:41and do a little bit of comparison.
- 28:43I know you can't really
- 28:45fully compare because the
- 28:47circumstances are always different.
- 28:50But you can still get an
- 28:51idea of how things could have gone.
- 28:56But still, like I said,
- 28:57it's just when you know who
- 29:01you're competing against ahead of time,
- 29:02it also changes your
- 29:03mindset going into the competition.
- 29:06Like if you know you're
- 29:07competing against this
- 29:09group of people versus this
- 29:11group of people, then you also,
- 29:15you kind of know what you have to do.
- 29:17You know,
- 29:17like when I finished the weekend at semis,
- 29:19I wasn't like, oh, I did great.
- 29:22Like there was so many
- 29:23things that I was like,
- 29:25This all needs to be better.
- 29:27This wasn't great.
- 29:27This wasn't great.
- 29:28This wasn't great.
- 29:29It just so happened to work out for me,
- 29:32but it's like, okay,
- 29:35I go compete against these
- 29:36people that you just,
- 29:39it's just a different mindset going in.
- 29:41And so it's, you can compare a little bit,
- 29:44but you also have to take
- 29:45it with a grain of salt.
- 29:47Yeah.
- 29:47And I always say when,
- 29:49when we're putting this information out,
- 29:51like they're not racing each other,
- 29:53right?
- 29:54If you had,
- 29:55if you had people from Europe besides you,
- 29:58you may change the way
- 29:59you're doing the workout
- 30:01because they're a tick ahead of you.
- 30:03And then you could push
- 30:04harder to get past them.
- 30:06Right.
- 30:06So it takes all of that out of it,
- 30:09which does you the numbers a little bit.
- 30:12Exactly.
- 30:13And I think even if we all
- 30:14went and did these workouts
- 30:16by ourselves in a dark room,
- 30:18it would still,
- 30:19it would look completely different.
- 30:21It's just when you're going
- 30:22and you're toe to toe,
- 30:23you're changing things.
- 30:24Or if somebody's up here,
- 30:26you're changing things.
- 30:27And it's just,
- 30:29you can't do that unless
- 30:31you're literally with those
- 30:33people on the spot.
- 30:36And you had by far the most
- 30:38difficult run of any semifinal.
- 30:42It was definitely, I mean, if you,
- 30:44obviously our times were like,
- 30:46way longer than everybody else's.
- 30:48I really liked it.
- 30:51I really liked the stairs.
- 30:55It just made it more time.
- 30:58But I don't know.
- 31:00I don't know if it was even
- 31:02more difficult.
- 31:03It's just different, you know?
- 31:08I do think because it's like, okay,
- 31:10you have to push going up the stairs,
- 31:12but then going down,
- 31:13you can only go so fast.
- 31:15So you can kind of use that to like,
- 31:19like almost recover a little bit,
- 31:22but then it's like a
- 31:22counter effects because
- 31:23then you're going up the stairs,
- 31:25which is much different
- 31:26than running on flat ground, obviously.
- 31:30Well,
- 31:30the other thing that I think that is
- 31:31not taken into effect is
- 31:34what happens to your legs on the stairs.
- 31:37And then the next day you
- 31:38have to do front squats.
- 31:40Like that's going to be
- 31:41different from your region to another,
- 31:43to another region.
- 31:44Yeah.
- 31:45It's just, it's just different.
- 31:46That's the thing.
- 31:47I mean, you just,
- 31:49you can't really compare you.
- 31:50You can look, but it's just,
- 31:53there's so many little
- 31:54things that just change things.
- 31:56And then it's,
- 31:57being outside and like and I
- 31:59mean I love being outside
- 32:01but it just it makes it
- 32:02different you know versus
- 32:03being inside ac you know
- 32:07yeah and if it's hot there
- 32:09in california you you guys
- 32:10are being drained from the
- 32:11heat and not in ac yeah
- 32:14there's there's so many
- 32:14factors so many factors um
- 32:18so so I take it you don't
- 32:20look at that and it doesn't
- 32:21matter to what anything you're doing um
- 32:24I do, but I also know the other factors.
- 32:28I'll check it out and be like, okay,
- 32:30but then I'm also going to be like,
- 32:34you know, it's not perfect.
- 32:39So what I look at there as
- 32:41an analyst is you finished
- 32:45in the combined leaderboard
- 32:46way better than you did at
- 32:47the games last year.
- 32:51Right.
- 32:51So,
- 32:52and you have all this stuff against you
- 32:54with, you had to run stairs,
- 32:56you were outside, all of those things,
- 32:59and how that could lend to
- 33:01even a better performance with the games.
- 33:07So as an analyst,
- 33:08not as like an athlete or
- 33:09anything like that.
- 33:10Yeah.
- 33:11Well,
- 33:13I know I'm doing much better at the
- 33:15games this year than last year.
- 33:18Yeah.
- 33:19So last year you made one
- 33:21cut and then got cut.
- 33:24Is that motivation for this
- 33:26year to not get cut?
- 33:28Or do you have bigger
- 33:29aspirations than that?
- 33:32I mean,
- 33:32I definitely don't want to get cut.
- 33:35I definitely want to compete
- 33:36all four days.
- 33:39But I also want to do better than that.
- 33:41I don't know what the cuts are.
- 33:43Is it the same?
- 33:46They never tell you until we're there.
- 33:49I mean,
- 33:49let's say if it is the same where
- 33:50it's like you do two days
- 33:51and it cuts to 30, one day cuts to 20.
- 33:54I mean,
- 33:55I for sure want to do better than
- 33:56that because I definitely
- 33:57want to be better than just top 20,
- 34:00you know?
- 34:02Yeah.
- 34:04Yeah.
- 34:05Do you sit down with your
- 34:06coach and talk about like
- 34:09what your goals are?
- 34:10And are they even
- 34:11leaderboard related or is
- 34:14it more personal?
- 34:16Yeah.
- 34:17I feel like whenever, pretty much anytime,
- 34:22whenever I come up with a
- 34:24goal kind of for myself,
- 34:25I'll go and tell my coach,
- 34:27like I'll discuss it.
- 34:29Like me and my husband will
- 34:30be like talking about it all the time.
- 34:33And then I'll talk to my
- 34:34coach and then I'll be like, okay,
- 34:40now it's like, it's more real.
- 34:42Like, okay, we're going to do this.
- 34:43So yeah,
- 34:44I'll like sit and like have a
- 34:46whole conversation with my coach.
- 34:48Um, and yeah, it can be anything.
- 34:51It could be, you know,
- 34:53just doing whether I just
- 34:56want to do better at the
- 34:56games or if I want to, you know, do this,
- 34:59or if I just want to be a better rower or,
- 35:05you know, something like that.
- 35:07Um, or like, you're like, Oh, I just,
- 35:09let's get stronger.
- 35:10Let's, let's do this.
- 35:11Um,
- 35:12or it could be like enjoying
- 35:15what I do or it could be anything really.
- 35:19Yeah.
- 35:19Yeah.
- 35:20Speaking of your coach, uh, Matthew Bryant,
- 35:22correct with golden line, uh,
- 35:26that he seems to be growing.
- 35:28Um,
- 35:29I talked to Jamie Hygieia before semis.
- 35:32She talked about him as their coach.
- 35:35Um, uh,
- 35:36And then Trayvon who I've
- 35:38gotten to know over the
- 35:38years is now with him.
- 35:40Do you ever get the
- 35:41opportunity to work out with,
- 35:43with those other people
- 35:44under him or are you guys
- 35:46kind of do your own thing?
- 35:48So most part,
- 35:51everybody has completely like
- 35:53individual programming,
- 35:54but there are several
- 35:56people kind of around in the area.
- 35:59Um,
- 36:00I would say as far as like competitive
- 36:02level wise, the,
- 36:04the closest one would be Trayvon.
- 36:06And he's just like an hour,
- 36:08like an hour and a half ish less away.
- 36:11So when it's like,
- 36:13we're coming up for like semifinals,
- 36:15we'll definitely get
- 36:16together and train as much as we can.
- 36:18Um,
- 36:20and then just like other times kind of
- 36:22random throughout the year, like we'll,
- 36:23we'll go do water Palooza.
- 36:24So we'll get together before that.
- 36:26And.
- 36:27train or just you know get
- 36:29some workouts in or um yeah
- 36:33just get together um does
- 36:36that help you uh-huh how
- 36:38much does that help you I
- 36:41mean it's great I love
- 36:42working out with other
- 36:42people because then I mean
- 36:45I'm used to training alone
- 36:46so it's just like a fun
- 36:48little treat to work out
- 36:50with someone especially
- 36:51someone who's obviously
- 36:53really good and competitive
- 36:54and um can definitely
- 36:57beat me in a lot of workouts.
- 36:59So it's very beneficial to me.
- 37:00Um, so yeah, I love it.
- 37:04And he's gotten so much
- 37:05better since joining gold line.
- 37:07Cause I don't think he's
- 37:09been there as long as you have as he.
- 37:11No.
- 37:12So he's been there.
- 37:13I don't know how long he's been with Matt.
- 37:15So he,
- 37:16that was how I kind of first got
- 37:18introduced to Matt.
- 37:19Um, one of my friends was like, Oh,
- 37:23this is a guy that coaches Trayvon.
- 37:25And then I was like, okay.
- 37:26Cause I didn't really,
- 37:29before I got a coach,
- 37:30I didn't really know.
- 37:31I was like, do I need a coach?
- 37:33Is that something I should do?
- 37:35And then I was like, then they,
- 37:37they were like, oh,
- 37:37well they do like individual programming.
- 37:41And that was something that
- 37:41I was initially interested in.
- 37:43I was like, okay,
- 37:43maybe this is something I
- 37:44should be doing.
- 37:45Like,
- 37:46instead of just doing a general program,
- 37:47I should probably have
- 37:48somebody who's actually going to
- 37:50Gimmie stuff specific to me.
- 37:51So I'm not just kind of like
- 37:53trying to figure out what to do.
- 37:56Um,
- 37:57and then that was one of the things
- 37:58that they said, they're like, oh, well,
- 37:59he's been coaching treatment for,
- 38:00you know, I, at this point,
- 38:02I think he had been
- 38:02coaching him for like a
- 38:03year or something.
- 38:04And so I was like, oh, okay.
- 38:06I know treatment treatment's really good.
- 38:07Yeah.
- 38:08Um, I'll check him out.
- 38:10So.
- 38:11Awesome.
- 38:12So how long did it take you
- 38:13to develop the trust with
- 38:14that coach and Matt to do that?
- 38:17Because that's gotta be
- 38:19important at this level.
- 38:22Um, I mean, we met,
- 38:26I went and did a training
- 38:28camp with them and we kind
- 38:29of just started working
- 38:30together right away after that.
- 38:32Um,
- 38:33I feel like the trust was kind of
- 38:34developed over time.
- 38:35We definitely,
- 38:37we communicate all the time.
- 38:38We talk to each other, um,
- 38:40pretty much every day almost
- 38:43um and so yeah it's just a
- 38:45lot of just going back and
- 38:46forth and just like
- 38:47communicating um and I feel
- 38:50like when I first met him I
- 38:51kind of told him I was like
- 38:53hey because this was in
- 38:55november of 2022 so it was
- 38:58before the season started
- 39:00for 2023 last year I was
- 39:02like hey um this is what I
- 39:05plan on doing next year um
- 39:07I plan on making it to the games
- 39:10So do you want to help me do that?
- 39:13And he was like, all right, let's do it.
- 39:17But yeah, I don't know.
- 39:18I mean,
- 39:18we're at this point now where
- 39:20there's just like a ton of
- 39:21trust and we have a really
- 39:22great relationship and yeah,
- 39:25he's the best.
- 39:26So he liked that confidence.
- 39:29Yeah.
- 39:30I mean, I guess, because I told him,
- 39:32I was like, I don't know.
- 39:34Cause I know, I feel like as a coach,
- 39:35you probably deal with a
- 39:36lot of people who are like,
- 39:38they say they want to do something,
- 39:39but they don't like really want to do it,
- 39:42you know?
- 39:43And then I was like, well,
- 39:46this is what I'm doing.
- 39:47It's not even if I want to or not, like,
- 39:50this is what I'm doing.
- 39:51So otherwise I'd just be wasting my time.
- 39:55All right,
- 39:55we're going to finish up with
- 39:56some fun stuff.
- 39:57And so in researching you,
- 39:59I looked through your Instagram.
- 40:01I noticed you have like a
- 40:02really killer garage gym now.
- 40:06Yeah, that was new this year.
- 40:09We did that a couple months
- 40:12after the games last year.
- 40:14We started putting that together.
- 40:16Can you do pretty much
- 40:17everything in there?
- 40:19No, I, so I work out in there a lot.
- 40:24Um, maybe, maybe the majority, maybe half.
- 40:27Um, and then I go to the gym a lot.
- 40:30Um,
- 40:31I have a gym that's pretty close by and
- 40:33then there's also some gyms
- 40:36in the area if I need to go there.
- 40:39Um, just kind of have a lot of options,
- 40:41but I definitely do a lot
- 40:42of the work in my garage
- 40:44and it's been so helpful as
- 40:46far as being efficient, as far as,
- 40:49okay, I can,
- 40:51if I have to do something
- 40:52where I'm just going to wake up and go,
- 40:54I can do that.
- 40:55Or if I need to come in and
- 40:56eat something real quick, or if I need to,
- 40:58you know, get like, there's just,
- 41:01it's never a,
- 41:02cause I remember last year I
- 41:04would go to a gym that
- 41:05wasn't really close to me
- 41:06and I would have to just
- 41:07like pack up all my stuff.
- 41:09And then I would be there
- 41:10just like all day.
- 41:11And I'd have to like bring
- 41:12my lunch and like do all this stuff.
- 41:14And like, now it's like, okay,
- 41:16I'm either at home or I can
- 41:18run to the gym that's close
- 41:19by and then run home really quick.
- 41:22And it's just so much more convenient.
- 41:23And I feel like I can get a
- 41:24lot more work done that way
- 41:26and just be more productive.
- 41:28I noticed it looks like in recent months,
- 41:30like all your name placards
- 41:32have been hung and all of
- 41:34that stuff on the one wall
- 41:36to make it your garage gym.
- 41:39Was that a concerted effort or?
- 41:41Yeah.
- 41:45I was like, I didn't really care that much,
- 41:49but it was, it was more Anton.
- 41:50My husband, he was like, he's like, yeah,
- 41:52we got to hang up all your
- 41:53posters and everything.
- 41:54And then once we did that, I was like, oh,
- 41:56okay, this,
- 41:57this actually looks a lot cooler.
- 41:59And I do like this.
- 42:01And so, yeah,
- 42:02we have a few more that we
- 42:04still need to put up right now, actually.
- 42:07But yeah, I like the way it looks.
- 42:10It's much less boring that way.
- 42:13uh your gold medal from the
- 42:15west semi-final is it hung
- 42:17anywhere or just in a sock
- 42:19drawer it's it's in the
- 42:21garage it's just like
- 42:22hanging on a handle right
- 42:24now um we're not sure
- 42:29whether we're gonna leave
- 42:29it there or not I really
- 42:31like it because it's like
- 42:32it's so heavy it's just so
- 42:34it's solid gold and it's so
- 42:35thick I was like this is a nice metal
- 42:39but we'll we'll have to find
- 42:41a good spot for it because
- 42:42it's like it's just like
- 42:43hanging next to like
- 42:44another metal from another
- 42:46comp was there but did you
- 42:49hear what happened to ariel
- 42:51lowen when she tried to
- 42:52hang her metal from
- 42:53wadapalooza in the on the
- 42:54wall no what happened uh
- 42:57dylan was hanging it for
- 42:59and hit one of the main
- 43:00water lines with the nail
- 43:03and it started spraying all
- 43:05through the gym
- 43:06Oh my gosh.
- 43:07Okay, I remember that.
- 43:08I remember seeing something about that.
- 43:10But I couldn't remember what it was.
- 43:12Oh my gosh.
- 43:15So if you ever permanently hang it,
- 43:17just make sure not to hit a water line.
- 43:23We will avoid that for sure.
- 43:28I think she hasn't hung her
- 43:29bronze medal from the games
- 43:31because of that.
- 43:32They're afraid they're going
- 43:33to hit something else.
- 43:35Maybe just put just like hooks.
- 43:38Yeah.
- 43:38I don't know.
- 43:42Yeah.
- 43:43Don't want to break the waterline again.
- 43:46Yeah.
- 43:46It's cool.
- 43:47It's cool because people
- 43:48that do the garage thing,
- 43:49like I'm close with Emily
- 43:51Rolfe and like they built a
- 43:53shelf for every event win
- 43:55she has at the games.
- 43:57So those like little plaques that you get.
- 43:59Yeah.
- 44:00That she has a little shelf
- 44:01that has those across it.
- 44:04See, that's why an event wins.
- 44:07I need to win an event.
- 44:09There you go.
- 44:09We'll see.
- 44:11If you were going to win an
- 44:12event right now with your skill set,
- 44:16what would it have to be?
- 44:16I don't know.
- 44:19It'd have to be like the
- 44:20perfect combination of like, I don't know,
- 44:26like long,
- 44:29grimy movements that like slow you down.
- 44:36I don't even know.
- 44:37Just something's ugly, I feel like.
- 44:42Is it hard to think about
- 44:44winning an event with Tia Beck?
- 44:50No.
- 44:52No?
- 44:52I think... I love that answer.
- 44:55She's such a beast, but she is human,
- 45:00and I don't know.
- 45:03I think...
- 45:04I mean, as far as myself,
- 45:06because like I said,
- 45:06I don't know if I'm there
- 45:08yet where I'm just like event winner here,
- 45:11there, everywhere.
- 45:13I hope to be one day.
- 45:15But I mean,
- 45:16I know plenty of other people
- 45:18who can definitely get their event wins.
- 45:21So if that means anything.
- 45:23Yeah.
- 45:24I mean, she dominated the East,
- 45:26but she did not set like
- 45:28the records in every event.
- 45:29Right.
- 45:30Right.
- 45:31Like other people beat her
- 45:32in events around the world.
- 45:34But that's another thing
- 45:35where it's like when you're
- 45:37not competing against everybody,
- 45:39it changes things.
- 45:40So it's like maybe she could have,
- 45:43but I don't know.
- 45:45Yeah.
- 45:46But there are people that
- 45:47are so good at certain things.
- 45:49Yeah.
- 45:49Like Laura's so good at machines, right?
- 45:51Laura's just great at machines.
- 45:53Alex is great at legless rope climbs.
- 45:55Yeah.
- 45:57Like there are people that
- 45:57are just great at certain aspects.
- 46:00Yeah.
- 46:00Yeah, like, I don't think, I don't,
- 46:02there was no way Tia was
- 46:04going to beat Alex on event
- 46:05three with the Legos real times.
- 46:08Like,
- 46:09I think even if they went to head-to-head,
- 46:10I don't think so.
- 46:12Yeah.
- 46:13And same thing with a bunch
- 46:14of other events, so.
- 46:15Yeah.
- 46:17Well, speaking of Alex,
- 46:18and we talked about Colton, Swolverine,
- 46:21like, when I go through your Instagram,
- 46:23I don't know if there's a
- 46:24company that backs their
- 46:26athletes as much as
- 46:28Swolverine backs theirs.
- 46:30They're the best.
- 46:32I, and it's crazy.
- 46:33Cause I swollering was,
- 46:35they like believed in me pretty early on,
- 46:39which is really cool.
- 46:41Um,
- 46:42cause I started working with them like
- 46:44after it was like,
- 46:47I want to say early February of 2022.
- 46:50So that was before like
- 46:56I hadn't even competed as an
- 46:58individual at semifinals yet, you know,
- 47:00like,
- 47:01and they had already like kind of
- 47:03reached out to me and I had
- 47:05met Alex and all of that.
- 47:07And so I don't know, to me,
- 47:09that was really cool.
- 47:10And like, here we are now and they're just,
- 47:14they're the best.
- 47:16They seem to be the best at
- 47:19talent evaluation early on.
- 47:21Yeah.
- 47:22Yeah.
- 47:24noticed that just the people
- 47:25who like they work with I'm
- 47:27like wow like how do y'all
- 47:30even how do y'all know this
- 47:31like how do y'all find
- 47:32these people but yeah it's
- 47:34amazing but they like it's
- 47:37it seems like every fourth
- 47:38post of yours is them
- 47:41saying something nice about
- 47:42you yeah oh yeah they are
- 47:46totally like hype squad all
- 47:48the way I remember when I
- 47:49first made the games last year like I
- 47:52Alex,
- 47:52like she comes up to me and I think
- 47:54she just,
- 47:56she was just like shaking with
- 47:57excitement.
- 47:58And she just like, like she could,
- 47:59she almost couldn't even talk.
- 48:00And I was like, oh my gosh, like, like,
- 48:04oh gosh, I love her.
- 48:07Yeah.
- 48:07I've seen an interview with her on Savant.
- 48:10She just seems like such a
- 48:11genuine person and the
- 48:15company is just amazing.
- 48:16So she's such a sunshine.
- 48:22I like that.
- 48:22That's a great way to put it.
- 48:24Um, so here's another question for you.
- 48:27What's it like being married
- 48:28to your media guy?
- 48:32Well, he,
- 48:37he got like super into like
- 48:41cameras and lenses and photography,
- 48:43videography, all that.
- 48:45Um, just like randomly, he just was like,
- 48:49Oh, I want to learn about this stuff.
- 48:52Um,
- 48:53and I feel like he's always kind of had
- 48:54like a really good eye for it.
- 48:56Like even like when we were younger,
- 48:58like before the CrossFit
- 48:59days and I would just have him like,
- 49:01you know,
- 49:02take a photo of me if we're on
- 49:03vacation or something.
- 49:05And he was always just really good at it.
- 49:07Um, and then one day he was like, wow,
- 49:10like it'd be cool.
- 49:12Like,
- 49:12cause if he was like hanging out with
- 49:13people who had their cameras and stuff,
- 49:15he's like, oh,
- 49:16I want to like learn how to do that.
- 49:18Like that, that looks really nice.
- 49:20Um,
- 49:22And so he just started
- 49:22getting into it and he's
- 49:23really good at it.
- 49:24Um, and then he was like, you know what?
- 49:27I maybe I'll make like a,
- 49:29just like a media page so I
- 49:32can like post my work, you know?
- 49:34Cause he,
- 49:34at first he was like putting it
- 49:35on his own account.
- 49:36He was like, well, I feel like,
- 49:38I don't know, this is weird.
- 49:39Maybe I should just make my
- 49:40own page to put the stuff on.
- 49:42Um,
- 49:45And so, yeah, it's,
- 49:47it makes things easier if I
- 49:48need something quick or on the fly.
- 49:50I'm like, okay, I need this done, you know,
- 49:51this weekend,
- 49:52or can we get this done by
- 49:54tomorrow or something?
- 49:55I can just be like, all right, let's,
- 49:56let's knock this out.
- 49:58So it helps with a lot of things.
- 50:02Yeah.
- 50:02And it's gotta be awesome that like,
- 50:04he can just walk out to the
- 50:05garage and shoot you on a random day.
- 50:09You don't have to have anybody come in,
- 50:10into your house, any of that stuff,
- 50:13because he's just there doing it all.
- 50:15And he is really good at it.
- 50:17Yeah.
- 50:19And I mean, that's the thing.
- 50:20I mean, he has a million hobbies.
- 50:23He does so many things.
- 50:24So it's like,
- 50:26I'll try and bug him as much
- 50:28as I can if I need something done.
- 50:29But...
- 50:31Yeah.
- 50:32And he,
- 50:33he puts a lot of work into it if he
- 50:35does do it.
- 50:35And I'm like making him like, okay,
- 50:37I need this.
- 50:38And then he's like upstairs and he's like,
- 50:39okay,
- 50:39now I got to edit it and do this and
- 50:41that.
- 50:41And, but he does, he does a lot for me.
- 50:44So.
- 50:46Yeah.
- 50:46The thing I hate most about
- 50:47media is editing.
- 50:49If I had somebody to do all my editing,
- 50:51I would be, I would love this 110%.
- 50:54Now it's just 98% because I
- 50:56got to do editing.
- 50:58Yeah, like with videos and all that,
- 51:00I mean, that's a lot of work.
- 51:02So, I mean, like photos, it's pretty easy,
- 51:04you know,
- 51:05especially if you can get it
- 51:06right out of the camera and
- 51:07then just do like maybe a
- 51:09quick filter or whatever you want to do.
- 51:12But the videos, that's a lot of work.
- 51:16So, explain this to me.
- 51:23My shirt.
- 51:25Your shirt.
- 51:27Uh, it's,
- 51:27it seems to be a collage of you
- 51:30with the main picture.
- 51:31I think you've got a cup of,
- 51:34or a scoop of Wolverine in your mouth.
- 51:36That's my grains powder.
- 51:42Um, so like people have been asking me,
- 51:45cause it's like noble did
- 51:46the jerseys last year and
- 51:48everybody's like, Oh, like where,
- 51:51where can we get the jerseys or all this?
- 51:53And then I'm like, Oh, well,
- 51:55it's go rock is the title sponsor now.
- 51:58And I don't think they're doing that.
- 51:59I think that was just a noble thing.
- 52:00So there's nothing.
- 52:02Um,
- 52:04and then a couple of weeks passed by
- 52:06and I was like,
- 52:06maybe we should just do a shirt.
- 52:09Like, you know, it wouldn't be that hard,
- 52:11especially cause I'm good friends with,
- 52:14um,
- 52:14Rocky who owns Cambro and he makes
- 52:17just super awesome apparel
- 52:20and shirts and all this stuff.
- 52:21So I was like, okay, well,
- 52:23Maybe I could get with him
- 52:24and tell him the idea that we have and,
- 52:27you know, do that.
- 52:27So the main thing was like,
- 52:29we really liked the picture.
- 52:31And that was something that
- 52:32I'd done for Swolverine.
- 52:35Just something different.
- 52:36I was like,
- 52:36I'll just have the scoop and
- 52:39have it like it's a pipe,
- 52:41but it's like nutrition.
- 52:43It's my greens and reds.
- 52:45Um, so we'll use that.
- 52:47And then I was like, okay,
- 52:48if you can like cartoonize
- 52:51it or stylize it or do whatever you do.
- 52:53Um, and then he was like, well,
- 52:56maybe we could add in some
- 52:57more shots and here and there.
- 52:59I was like,
- 52:59I just want something that just
- 53:00says Doma in big letters
- 53:02that people can wear so
- 53:03they can wrap something at the games.
- 53:05So yeah, we decided to make a shirt.
- 53:08Uh,
- 53:09any thought behind the iron maiden shirt,
- 53:11big fan, or just like the shirt?
- 53:14Um,
- 53:16I like Iron Maiden.
- 53:17I just like rock in general.
- 53:19And he gave me that shirt and I was like,
- 53:22this is just an awesome
- 53:23shirt and I love it.
- 53:24And that's also kind of how
- 53:25I wanted my shirt to be
- 53:27because I like the fit.
- 53:30And so I was like, if we can just do the,
- 53:32like kind of the same thing there.
- 53:33And it was just perfect that
- 53:34it happened to also be the main photo.
- 53:36And so.
- 53:39Yeah.
- 53:40So cool.
- 53:41I'm such a music buff.
- 53:43Like that's my second love.
- 53:45My first love is doing this and CrossFit.
- 53:47Second love is music.
- 53:48So I always notice those
- 53:50like little touches of things.
- 53:52Um, Oh, I know.
- 53:54Nevermind.
- 53:54I was thinking, cause,
- 53:55cause you're in Columbus, right?
- 53:57Yeah.
- 53:58Okay.
- 53:59I was confusing with, uh, Cleveland, the,
- 54:03the rock and roll hall of fame.
- 54:05Yeah.
- 54:05We, my daughter is into music too.
- 54:08And so like for her birthday,
- 54:09every once in a while she
- 54:10wants to go to the rock and
- 54:12roll hall of fame.
- 54:13So we've done that.
- 54:15And it's a lot of fun.
- 54:16It's fun.
- 54:19And she got it all for me
- 54:22for that part for sure.
- 54:23So, so yeah.
- 54:29So that's all I really had for you today.
- 54:32I'm just super excited for you.
- 54:34It was fun watching you out there be the,
- 54:36the picture of consistency.
- 54:39Yes.
- 54:42Love it.
- 54:43And now, now you're, you're going for,
- 54:47because in this day and age,
- 54:48like when you get to the games,
- 54:49a hundred points means a lot.
- 54:51Yeah.
- 54:51So like event wins are super important.
- 54:55Yes.
- 54:55That was something I saw actually.
- 54:58Cause I mean, I didn't even know this.
- 55:00I mean, well,
- 55:01I know how a lot of times
- 55:02when the further it goes down,
- 55:04you're placing, you get even less points.
- 55:06Like instead of doing three each,
- 55:09you'll only get two each.
- 55:11But even when I was looking at people,
- 55:12if you got last place on an event,
- 55:14at least at semis, you got zero points.
- 55:17I was like, man,
- 55:17I would really suck to not get any.
- 55:22I'm like, what a difference.
- 55:24I would be remiss in not
- 55:26asking about the barbell incident.
- 55:28Because we've all done it.
- 55:31We've all done it.
- 55:33I've chipped teeth.
- 55:34I've done all those things.
- 55:37You took a barbell to the head.
- 55:39Yes.
- 55:41What exactly happened?
- 55:42So we're lifting.
- 55:47We,
- 55:47we had done clean and jerks and then we
- 55:49were going to snatch.
- 55:50So I was really pumped.
- 55:52Cause I had,
- 55:53I had P I hit a PR on my clean and jerk.
- 55:55So I was feeling really just
- 55:57like jazzed up and I'm like, yeah,
- 55:59I feel strong and powerful.
- 56:02And I was like, let's snatch.
- 56:03Let's let's hit a PR on the snatch.
- 56:05Um,
- 56:07And there was this cue that
- 56:09someone had given me
- 56:10literally like a couple of
- 56:11days before about when the bar path,
- 56:14when the bar passes to snap
- 56:16your chin down for that stability to,
- 56:18I don't know if it's
- 56:20something about loosening the traps,
- 56:21but it's like more of just
- 56:22like a stable position with
- 56:23your chin down.
- 56:24Um, and I was like, okay,
- 56:27I'm going to try that.
- 56:29And I was just literally
- 56:30warming up with the barbell
- 56:31and I snapped the chin down.
- 56:35definitely too early.
- 56:36And I basically just pulled
- 56:38it as hard as I possibly could.
- 56:40Cause I was feeling good.
- 56:41I was like, Oh, and next thing I know,
- 56:45it's just like blackness
- 56:47and I'm on the floor and, um,
- 56:50all this liquid is coming
- 56:51out and I'm just like,
- 56:52why is my nose bleeding?
- 56:54Um, and why are my eyes closed?
- 56:58But then I realized that my
- 56:59nose was not bleeding.
- 57:02Um,
- 57:02and it just took me a few minutes to
- 57:04understand kind of what was happening.
- 57:07Um, we, we walked away and I like,
- 57:09cause my head was,
- 57:10my hand was holding my head,
- 57:12but I didn't register why I
- 57:13was doing that.
- 57:14And then eventually I
- 57:15started asking the question, I'm like,
- 57:16can I move my hand?
- 57:18And they're like, um, let's try it.
- 57:19And then I move it,
- 57:20but it's just continuing to
- 57:21just squirt out all the blood.
- 57:23And so I'm like, Oh, um,
- 57:26but I was just so annoyed.
- 57:27I was like, man,
- 57:28like I really wanted to snatch.
- 57:30Um,
- 57:31But my coach and I kind of
- 57:33decided that it was a good thing cause it,
- 57:35it slowed me down.
- 57:36Um,
- 57:39it forced me to take a little bit of a
- 57:42step back, um, when it was necessary.
- 57:48And you said it was an empty barbell.
- 57:50Yeah.
- 57:51Yeah, I mean, that's the thing.
- 57:53That's what people would ask about, like,
- 57:54oh, how much weight was it?
- 57:56I'm like, guys,
- 57:56if there was weight on the bar,
- 57:58it would have moved slower.
- 57:59I wouldn't have pulled it as hard.
- 58:01Or I would have pulled it as hard,
- 58:03but it would have, like, when it's empty,
- 58:05you can pull it so much
- 58:06harder and faster versus, like, you know,
- 58:09the bar's going to move so
- 58:10much slower when there's a
- 58:11bunch of weight on it.
- 58:13Yeah, every time I've hit myself,
- 58:15it's been with an empty barbell.
- 58:17Yeah.
- 58:18Every time.
- 58:19Yeah.
- 58:21Yeah.
- 58:22The only exception is I went overhead once,
- 58:24my shoulder gave out,
- 58:26and it came down on me.
- 58:29Yeah.
- 58:30I don't.
- 58:32I thought about that happening.
- 58:34And I'm like,
- 58:35I need to stop thinking about that.
- 58:37I don't want that to happen.
- 58:39Yeah.
- 58:40It actually,
- 58:41that was more of like a glancing blow.
- 58:43It didn't hurt as much as the up,
- 58:45the power like up through it.
- 58:48yeah it because that's the
- 58:50thing like going up that's
- 58:52why it like turned into it
- 58:53was just like a flap the
- 58:56and that's I think that's
- 58:57why it was so hard for it
- 58:58to stop um the bleeding for
- 59:01so many hours was just I
- 59:02don't know just like the
- 59:03way like the u-shape was
- 59:05like I don't know well
- 59:08here's here's a hint if
- 59:10you're a male and you shave
- 59:11your face and you cut your
- 59:12face it just will not stop bleeding
- 59:16there's something about like
- 59:17the the blood vessels in
- 59:19your face are so close to
- 59:20the surface like it's hard
- 59:22to get it to stop yeah like
- 59:24your head is just so
- 59:25vascular that's what
- 59:26everybody was saying you
- 59:26know like the head just
- 59:27bleeds it just bleeds and
- 59:29bleeds and I was like okay
- 59:32but it's it's interesting
- 59:33because I had literally I'd
- 59:34hit myself in this exact
- 59:35same spot before when I was
- 59:37like 12 and it was the exact same thing
- 59:40I didn't cut this,
- 59:41like the skin didn't cut or anything,
- 59:43but I had got a concussion
- 59:44in the exact same spot that
- 59:45I got a concussion a few months ago.
- 59:47And,
- 59:48but it was just like that time it was
- 59:51like concussed.
- 59:52And then my nose was like huge.
- 59:54Cause I had broken my nose
- 59:55and it was just like bright yellow,
- 59:58but this time it was like
- 59:59concussion and then stitch,
- 1:00:02but it was like the same thing.
- 1:00:07honestly last question once
- 1:00:10you podium at the games
- 1:00:12where are you going to go
- 1:00:13to like relax after the
- 1:00:14games because I know you're
- 1:00:18an outdoors girl that
- 1:00:19you've got to get out and
- 1:00:21do something yeah
- 1:00:23definitely got to get out
- 1:00:24and do something just kind
- 1:00:26of like whatever I don't
- 1:00:27even like I don't even care
- 1:00:30to like plan anything I
- 1:00:31just want to like go
- 1:00:33completely just like rogue
- 1:00:36No plan, no cares, no routines.
- 1:00:39Just like, I don't know,
- 1:00:41get in the car and just
- 1:00:41like drive somewhere and
- 1:00:43don't come back for a while.
- 1:00:46There's certain things that
- 1:00:47we do have planned.
- 1:00:48Like there's like this,
- 1:00:50a couple of camping trips
- 1:00:51and stuff coming up.
- 1:00:55But yeah,
- 1:00:55I just want to get out of town
- 1:00:57and not care.
- 1:01:01Is there any plan to go to
- 1:01:02Scotland for the Rogue Invitational?
- 1:01:06Yes, we are definitely,
- 1:01:08definitely planning to do that.
- 1:01:11So,
- 1:01:12and it's just perfect time of the year.
- 1:01:14It's early November.
- 1:01:15So the idea is that we would
- 1:01:17go compete and then hang
- 1:01:20out for like a week or two
- 1:01:22and just run around a little bit,
- 1:01:24whether we want to hop over
- 1:01:26to Ireland or go to main
- 1:01:29Europe or whatever.
- 1:01:31Yeah, that would be a blast.
- 1:01:34Well, Abby, as always, super fun.
- 1:01:37Thank you so much for doing this.
- 1:01:39Thank you to everybody listening.
- 1:01:41We will catch everybody next
- 1:01:42time on Gladstone Media Podcast.
- 1:01:46Thank you so much.
