- 0:22Speaker 1: go Steelers!
- 0:34Speaker 2: Welcome in to the Irish Steelers podcast presented by Aer Lingus.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Michael McQuaid here from Steelers Studio, I guess we can
- 0:40Speaker 2: call it now. It's good fun. We're having a bit
- 0:42Speaker 2: of crack here. My friend Jason Hayes from Pro Football
- 0:44Speaker 2: Ireland is here. And Jason, you know, generally speaking, you know,
- 0:47Speaker 2: we're coming to the end of the NFL preseason already.
- 0:50Speaker 2: It's a bit scary how fast it sort of went in,
- 0:53Speaker 2: isn't it? It's hard to believe the Steelers are playing
- 0:55Speaker 2: their last preseason game on Thursday night against the Bills.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Friday morning, our time is mad.
- 0:59Speaker 3: It's incredible. Yeah, it's hard to believe really. And I think...
- 1:03Speaker 3: Probably been a busier off-season than many times past for
- 1:06Speaker 3: the Steelers in terms of coaching changes and just complete
- 1:11Speaker 3: new future going forward. So it's been one of the
- 1:14Speaker 3: more intriguing ones to watch. Certainly, yes, it's time to
- 1:18Speaker 3: go now. Yeah, not much time left.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I'm glad you said that because we are going to
- 1:21Speaker 2: have a bit of a refresher here. But obviously for
- 1:23Speaker 2: Steelers fans watching this or listening to this, the game
- 1:25Speaker 2: against the Bills, folks, free football. Thursday night, Friday morning, midnight.
- 1:29Speaker 2: The game is free on Steelers.com for all Irish fans.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Steelers fans and of course Irish NFL fans everybody welcome
- 1:35Speaker 2: to join in if you get a chance to watch
- 1:36Speaker 2: football for free check it out it's going to be
- 1:38Speaker 2: our last chance to check out the Steelers before they
- 1:40Speaker 2: have their opener in a couple of weeks time ahead
- 1:43Speaker 2: of the season a quick refresher a bit of crack
- 1:46Speaker 2: as well obviously Jason for you you're obviously an NFL
- 1:49Speaker 2: fan first and foremost we'll talk about France in a
- 1:52Speaker 2: minute but I think I've asked everybody this how cool
- 1:56Speaker 2: and you're sitting obviously you've got a terrible an Irish
- 1:58Speaker 2: terrible tile behind you here that Dublin game How cool
- 2:00Speaker 2: was that week in Dublin for you? And seeing, I
- 2:03Speaker 2: know you were in the crowd in Dublin whenever Mr
- 2:07Speaker 2: Rooney was talking with Mr Goodell. Did it hit home
- 2:09Speaker 2: for you then? Or was it whenever the Steelers ran
- 2:11Speaker 2: out in Croke Park? Or when did it hit home
- 2:13Speaker 2: for you when it happened?
- 2:14Speaker 3: There were so many moments. I think during the Irish
- 2:16Speaker 3: National Anthem, as the game was about to get going,
- 2:18Speaker 3: is when, like, well, this is actually happening. But I've
- 2:23Speaker 3: covered quite a few international games at this point. by
- 2:27Speaker 3: fair the most I've ever seen a franchise connect with
- 2:30Speaker 3: the country that it was playing in there's obvious reasons
- 2:33Speaker 3: for that but you could see it was more meaningful
- 2:37Speaker 3: for the players they knew how much it meant to
- 2:39Speaker 3: the owners of the organisation and you could feel that
- 2:42Speaker 3: as a fan interacting with people from Pittsburgh who were
- 2:46Speaker 3: flying over to Ireland for the first time it just
- 2:49Speaker 3: seemed to mean more to everyone compared to maybe what
- 2:52Speaker 3: we might normally be used to seeing in some other
- 2:54Speaker 3: games so I think the way the fans represented themselves
- 2:59Speaker 3: and represented the organisation was a pleasure from an Irish perspective.
- 3:03Speaker 3: And moving towards Paris, I can only say, you know,
- 3:07Speaker 3: if you're living in Paris right now and you're a
- 3:09Speaker 3: Steelers fan looking forward to it, then it's incredible.
- 3:13Speaker 2: The match-up, yeah, in Paris, obviously seeing it against the Steelers,
- 3:17Speaker 2: you've made a really good point there, the people living
- 3:19Speaker 2: in Paris. But I think for us, if you're a
- 3:21Speaker 2: Steelers fan, if you're in Ireland, if you're in the UK,
- 3:23Speaker 2: if you're in Europe, it's a game close to where
- 3:25Speaker 2: you are. I mean, I know it's a weekend which
- 3:27Speaker 2: is going to be fun in Paris. On a weekend,
- 3:29Speaker 2: any player I've spoke to is just excited for it.
- 3:31Speaker 2: First game in the Stade de France, Cedars making a
- 3:33Speaker 2: bit more history as well in an iconic stadium.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think the first time in any of
- 3:38Speaker 3: these cities is a special occasion. And whether it's the
- 3:41Speaker 3: local fans, you know, having the once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience
- 3:45Speaker 3: of experiencing it for the first time, or if you're
- 3:48Speaker 3: someone who's visiting the city and still getting to experience
- 3:52Speaker 3: the build-up, it just... um it's a special occasion and
- 3:55Speaker 3: yeah i'd absolutely encourage just a short hop on a
- 3:58Speaker 3: hop on down to um to paris there to see
- 4:01Speaker 3: the game.
- 4:02Speaker 2: I'm sure i'm sure a lot of people already have
- 4:04Speaker 2: got the french terrible tiles and a lot of people
- 4:06Speaker 2: walking around them at the draft did you like i
- 4:09Speaker 2: know you weren't in pittsburgh for the draft but how
- 4:10Speaker 2: did it look to you somebody like we were talking
- 4:12Speaker 2: there earlier on even off camera about whenever drew was
- 4:15Speaker 2: drafted and inferred around that crowd were just electric That's
- 4:20Speaker 2: what it is. It's a sport. It's a lot like
- 4:22Speaker 2: Ireland in a sense for people's passion for sport.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it really seems like it. That's the impression I
- 4:27Speaker 3: got from meeting some of these fans when they came
- 4:29Speaker 3: to Dublin last year. And certainly that was reflected on
- 4:32Speaker 3: the coverage, whether it was the draft or... Obviously, Mike
- 4:37Speaker 3: McCarthy coming home to his roots as well in terms
- 4:39Speaker 3: of the Steel City.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Clearly, it's.
- 4:44Speaker 3: A region and a fan base with a lot of
- 4:46Speaker 3: history and a lot of deep-rooted passion as a result
- 4:49Speaker 3: of that. And I think a lot in common with
- 4:51Speaker 3: an Irish person, to be honest.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Very in common. A lot in common, for sure. You've
- 4:55Speaker 2: made a really good point there. We're going to try
- 4:56Speaker 2: and do a bit of a refresher. I'm sure a
- 4:58Speaker 2: lot of people know Irish NFL fans, Theaters fans coming
- 5:01Speaker 2: in and maybe they've been away from the game for
- 5:03Speaker 2: a few months and obviously we're coming into the season now.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Do a bit of a refresher, and you've mentioned one
- 5:08Speaker 2: guy's name there, Mike McCarthy. Coach McCarthy now replacing Mike Tomlin,
- 5:12Speaker 2: who has come in. It's really interesting, Jason, because Coach
- 5:16Speaker 2: McCarthy has coached the Green Bay Packers, won the Super Bowl,
- 5:20Speaker 2: of course, the Dallas Cowboys, and now the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 5:23Speaker 2: If you look at the history of the NFL, to
- 5:25Speaker 2: coach those three teams is phenomenal. And you mentioned it
- 5:31Speaker 2: as well, he's from the area, and you can see
- 5:33Speaker 2: how much it meant to him in the first preseason game.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I think it's going to be really, really cool to
- 5:36Speaker 2: see what he can do with his team. What's your
- 5:38Speaker 2: thoughts on him overall? Do you like the fit?
- 5:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I really do like the fit, firstly, for the
- 5:43Speaker 3: reasons we outlined. I think if it means more to
- 5:45Speaker 3: him as a coach, and he's gotten quite emotional at
- 5:48Speaker 3: times when even speaking about the connection he has with
- 5:50Speaker 3: the organisation and with Pittsburgh, I think that, first off,
- 5:54Speaker 3: makes it a special move. But beyond that, in terms
- 5:57Speaker 3: of his track record... He obviously won that Super Bowl
- 6:01Speaker 3: in Green Bay, but always had that team competing. And
- 6:05Speaker 3: very much the same in Dallas. Never quite got as
- 6:07Speaker 3: far and never got to the Super Bowl, certainly. But
- 6:11Speaker 3: always competitive. I love him as a quarterback whisperer. The
- 6:17Speaker 3: play he got out of Dak and the play he
- 6:19Speaker 3: used to get out of Rodgers. And now he has
- 6:20Speaker 3: to do it.
- 6:21Speaker 2: All over again. But that's a mad thing. It's something
- 6:24Speaker 2: that people have talked about all summer long. Rodgers comes back,
- 6:26Speaker 2: final season. I'm saying that because he literally basically implied
- 6:29Speaker 2: it in a press conference that you can watch at
- 6:31Speaker 2: suitors.com of course that you made a really good point there.
- 6:34Speaker 2: He's worked with him before and I think he was
- 6:36Speaker 2: probably an Antigua factor of him actually coming back. It's
- 6:39Speaker 2: exciting to see that relationship in the last hurrah of Rodgers'
- 6:42Speaker 2: career and McCarthy gets the chance to repeat it somewhere else.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Oh it is, yeah and it's It's almost like... I mean,
- 6:49Speaker 3: the beginning of my NFL fandom is when those two
- 6:51Speaker 3: guys were united in Green Bay. So now all these
- 6:54Speaker 3: 20 years later or whatever it is, for them to
- 6:56Speaker 3: be coming back together and still doing it at a
- 6:59Speaker 3: high level, each of them. I'd love to be a
- 7:01Speaker 3: fly on the wall in the meeting room when they're
- 7:04Speaker 3: breaking down an opponent or looking through film because... I'd
- 7:08Speaker 3: say they'll have a few moments throughout the season where
- 7:11Speaker 3: they almost get nostalgic of times gone by. But I
- 7:16Speaker 3: love McCarthy. I love the fact that he's taking ownership
- 7:21Speaker 3: of play calling again this year for the Steelers. I
- 7:23Speaker 3: think he'll obviously know Rodgers inside out and they're making
- 7:27Speaker 3: a few changes to make sure they're getting the most
- 7:29Speaker 3: out of that offence as a whole. I think going
- 7:30Speaker 3: under centre, firstly, is an interesting move that McCarthy is
- 7:34Speaker 3: looking to make more on the offensive side. I think
- 7:38Speaker 3: that can only suit Rodgers. It's not being naive to
- 7:41Speaker 3: the fact that he is the age that he is
- 7:43Speaker 3: and he's been around for so long.
- 7:45Speaker 2: One would argue Tom Brady won the Super Bowl around
- 7:47Speaker 2: that age with the Tom Brady Buccaneers a few years ago.
- 7:49Speaker 3: I mean, sports science these days, it's... There's a lot
- 7:52Speaker 3: of evidence there to make sure that he'll still be
- 7:55Speaker 3: playing at a high level. And Rodgers is maybe the
- 7:59Speaker 3: brightest brain in football in terms of he got the
- 8:02Speaker 3: ball out fastest of anyone in the league last year.
- 8:04Speaker 3: He knows his limitations now and he's able to adapt
- 8:07Speaker 3: and play with them.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Comfortable to adapt, I think. He's very comfortable.
- 8:10Speaker 3: And I think playing under centre, maybe trying to play
- 8:13Speaker 3: a bit more hard-nosed football in terms of running the
- 8:15Speaker 3: football and doing what we always knew to seal us
- 8:17Speaker 3: for over the years. is something to look forward to,
- 8:20Speaker 3: and that can only take the pressure off Aaron Rodgers,
- 8:22Speaker 3: who I'm sure is going to thrive off a play-action situation,
- 8:24Speaker 3: which might buy him that extra second or two that
- 8:28Speaker 3: he will make defences pay for.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I think it's so cool to see Rodgers and Paris.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I don't think he fought two years ago, he'd be
- 8:34Speaker 2: able to play in Dublin, now Paris as well, so
- 8:35Speaker 2: it's really, really cool. We're going to talk very quickly
- 8:37Speaker 2: about this final pre-season game in a wee second. Before
- 8:40Speaker 2: we do that, let's hear from Coach McCarthy, who was
- 8:42Speaker 2: talking to Steelers media earlier this week, ahead of Thursday night.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Mike, any update on Max and or your two guys
- 8:51Speaker 4: on Pup Corner? We're hoping that Max will schedule to
- 8:54Speaker 4: practice today, and so is Jalen. We're going to bring
- 8:57Speaker 4: him off of Pup today. Yeah, how about the two corners?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Jalen.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Anything jump out off the tape that you didn't suspect?
- 9:07Speaker 4: That I didn't suspect? You know, I think, like anything,
- 9:12Speaker 4: I thought the defense played better than– probably felt walking
- 9:16Speaker 4: off the field. You know, I think that's out of the,
- 9:18Speaker 4: you know, the slow start. That was something as a
- 9:21Speaker 4: team that we need to, we need to be on
- 9:23Speaker 4: top of. You know, I'm a big believer in ROI.
- 9:27Speaker 4: You know, everybody practices a little differently and you emphasize
- 9:30Speaker 4: things more, you know, from one, you know, phase to
- 9:33Speaker 4: the next. And, you know, we spend, we spent some
- 9:36Speaker 4: time as far as the start of the game, you know,
- 9:39Speaker 4: first 15 plays on offense, things like that. So we,
- 9:42Speaker 4: We need to start faster. So that was one of
- 9:45Speaker 4: the things I'd like to see us come out of
- 9:47Speaker 4: this week. But yeah, I thought that our young guys
- 9:52Speaker 4: are getting better. It's preseason football. You know, we've made
- 9:54Speaker 4: some mistakes. You know, we had the mistakes on the
- 9:57Speaker 4: two interceptions. You like to see those things happen. You
- 10:00Speaker 4: don't like to see them happen, but it's better they
- 10:01Speaker 4: happen in the preseason so you can definitely learn from it. But,
- 10:05Speaker 4: you know, our young guys are getting another chance. You know,
- 10:09Speaker 4: Thursday night in Buffalo, the main thing for today is,
- 10:12Speaker 4: you know, we're kind of still in the install cleanup
- 10:16Speaker 4: phase with the older guys. So we're going to really
- 10:19Speaker 4: hit that hard. Today and tomorrow, these are our last
- 10:22Speaker 4: two training camp practices. We're on a 10-hour schedule with
- 10:25Speaker 4: the vets, so we're going to max that out with
- 10:28Speaker 4: both of practice, and then we'll do the mock game
- 10:30Speaker 4: like we did up in Latrobe. We'll do the mock
- 10:32Speaker 4: game here both today and tomorrow. I really want to
- 10:35Speaker 4: have two really productive padded practices, and that's the kind
- 10:40Speaker 4: of wrap-up training camp, wrap-up the things we really want
- 10:44Speaker 4: to focus on, make sure our guys are ready to
- 10:46Speaker 4: go in Buffalo, and then Then we've got the long weekend.
- 10:50Speaker 4: We've got to pick the team, but we want to
- 10:52Speaker 4: springboard into Atlanta preparation.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Mike, given the report that came out after the game,
- 10:56Speaker 2: you guys have already decided to keep both young quarterbacks.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Is that accurate, or is there what more we need
- 11:02Speaker 2: to see before we make that?
- 11:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I haven't been part of any conversations where the
- 11:07Speaker 4: 53 has been selected already. So anything, any position, any realm,
- 11:12Speaker 4: we definitely have ideas. I think it's evident we're trying
- 11:15Speaker 4: to play play the players in many different combinations. You
- 11:20Speaker 4: see the personnel groups we're trying to use and so forth.
- 11:24Speaker 4: The goal, especially in the younger half of the roster,
- 11:28Speaker 4: is to give all these guys a chance to play, perform,
- 11:32Speaker 4: to show what they have so we can get a
- 11:35Speaker 4: clean evaluation on it. Not everybody makes the team today,
- 11:39Speaker 4: but they can make it tomorrow. You have to be
- 11:43Speaker 4: into it then. You have a 90-man roster for a reason.
- 11:45Speaker 4: You roll players in and out of the bottom half,
- 11:48Speaker 4: you know, about bottom part of your roster for a reason,
- 11:50Speaker 4: but it's all about being exposed to, you know, because,
- 11:55Speaker 4: you know, some players play better in certain places than others.
- 11:58Speaker 4: And that's, that's just the way this league is always work.
- 12:01Speaker 4: But I, you can't give me enough players because it's
- 12:05Speaker 4: going to take, you know, it's going to take probably
- 12:07Speaker 4: more than the 68 players in one championship. I've been
- 12:10Speaker 4: part of one championship and, You'll hear me say this
- 12:13Speaker 4: all the time because I believe it. I think it's
- 12:14Speaker 4: a principle of how you develop and build a roster.
- 12:17Speaker 4: It took 77 players in my one experience that we
- 12:22Speaker 4: were able to get that done. That's a mindset that
- 12:26Speaker 4: I hold true to. It affects the way I train
- 12:28Speaker 4: the team. It affects how we look at these young
- 12:31Speaker 4: players playing at the end. I've never been comfortable for
- 12:34Speaker 4: a player to be part of your training camp process
- 12:36Speaker 4: and then he doesn't play in a preseason game. If
- 12:39Speaker 4: that happens, that's an error on my part. my process
- 12:43Speaker 4: of getting guys in the game. So that's a long answer,
- 12:45Speaker 4: but you know, I think it's important to really, you know,
- 12:49Speaker 4: hit your targets every day. You know, this shift coming
- 12:51Speaker 4: back here from Latrobe, you know, we lost that practice
- 12:54Speaker 4: up there. That was an important practice. These two are
- 12:57Speaker 4: very important practices. So hopefully the weather cooperates, but you know,
- 13:02Speaker 4: you only have so much time, you know, and there's
- 13:04Speaker 4: a reason why we, we max out these practices. The
- 13:06Speaker 4: reason why we stand here until the horn blows to
- 13:09Speaker 4: get on field. I mean, it's, It's a process that
- 13:13Speaker 4: I've done a long time, but you can't have enough
- 13:16Speaker 4: information about your players. So that'll be our goal this week,
- 13:22Speaker 4: and hopefully we pick the right 68.
- 13:27Speaker 2: That's Coach McCarthy ahead of the Steelers' final preseason game,
- 13:29Speaker 2: joined with Jason Hester. Jason, it's hard to build up
- 13:34Speaker 2: on a week 5, week 10, week 17 basis for
- 13:37Speaker 2: a final preseason game. But I guess the biggest thing,
- 13:41Speaker 2: when you see guys like Drew Aller, you know that
- 13:44Speaker 2: Will Howard, different backup defensive guys, kickers, etc. It's going
- 13:49Speaker 2: to be hard to build it up. But it is
- 13:52Speaker 2: a key game for health, continuity, and some guys are
- 13:56Speaker 2: going to be playing for their jobs as well. So
- 13:59Speaker 2: it's so important because guys are trying to make that
- 14:00Speaker 2: final roster. You can never write off the importance of
- 14:03Speaker 2: a final pre-season game, can you?
- 14:05Speaker 3: Absolutely. There's so many individuals out there that will be
- 14:07Speaker 3: playing like their lives depend on it, frankly. Guys like
- 14:13Speaker 3: your Alar or your Howard who showed so much promising
- 14:16Speaker 3: signs in week one, they'll be looking to recapture that
- 14:19Speaker 3: in week three because they certainly won't be happy on
- 14:21Speaker 3: a personal level with how they performed in the second
- 14:24Speaker 3: pre-season game. But across the board, it's, as I say,
- 14:29Speaker 3: pre-season competition. maybe at this stage of the year, we're
- 14:32Speaker 3: all excited for that week one kickoff right now, but
- 14:35Speaker 3: certainly there's a lot to be interested in in this
- 14:37Speaker 3: final pre-season game at a player level. At the 53-man roster,
- 14:42Speaker 3: that's a lot of slots, but those last handful of
- 14:45Speaker 3: slots will still be undecided in the coaches' minds right now.
- 14:48Speaker 3: And so there's essentially a battle between those 30, 40
- 14:51Speaker 3: players for that chance to play in black and gold
- 14:56Speaker 3: moving forward.
- 14:56Speaker 2: And that's the thing that's changed. Usually they used to
- 14:58Speaker 2: cut them before each game and each moment so it
- 15:02Speaker 2: was difficult but now it is it's at the very
- 15:03Speaker 2: very end just as we finish off our little refresher
- 15:06Speaker 2: for fans that might be coming in again you know
- 15:08Speaker 2: what's I guess if I asked you what's the one
- 15:11Speaker 2: thing that excites you this year because for me it's
- 15:13Speaker 2: Cam Hebert's back obviously TJ's back as well there's all
- 15:16Speaker 2: this continuity of these leaders are still there Rodgers is
- 15:20Speaker 2: back in.
- 15:21Speaker 3: And a couple of clever contract extensions.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Keanu Benton Nick Herbig they're making serious moves here it's
- 15:27Speaker 2: just a matter of signing that right balance but like
- 15:30Speaker 2: the Antigua part is still there you look at so
- 15:32Speaker 2: many teams across the league that have made change even
- 15:34Speaker 2: in the AFC North you know the Ravens have made
- 15:36Speaker 2: a new head coaching change as well the staters feel
- 15:38Speaker 2: like they're in a good place and it's just styles
- 15:41Speaker 2: off each week and trying to make those realistic choices
- 15:44Speaker 2: I guess whenever it comes to.
- 15:45Speaker 3: It yeah certainly and I think a guy personally I'm
- 15:48Speaker 3: very excited to look at is Patrick Graham new defensive
- 15:52Speaker 3: coordinator and see what he can do with that unit
- 15:53Speaker 3: because it is as you say the continuity of keeping
- 15:56Speaker 3: your star players and Locking in a couple of those
- 15:58Speaker 3: younger stars long term is fantastic, but really I want
- 16:02Speaker 3: to see what this fresh take on the defence is
- 16:04Speaker 3: going to do. Tomlin obviously had his hands in it
- 16:07Speaker 3: for so long, so it will be an adjustment for
- 16:10Speaker 3: some of these guys who only ever know playing under Tomlin.
- 16:13Speaker 3: I think from Patrick Graham's perspective, when we look at
- 16:16Speaker 3: what he's done in his career, he always tends to
- 16:18Speaker 3: get the most out of the players that he has.
- 16:21Speaker 3: He's great at adapting his scheme to ensure that each
- 16:24Speaker 3: player is elevated to as high a standard as possible.
- 16:27Speaker 3: He won't try and put square pegs in round holes.
- 16:30Speaker 3: He's going to ensure that every player is comfortable in
- 16:32Speaker 3: the role that's being asked of them, whether that's Queen
- 16:35Speaker 3: in the middle, whether that's the backfield or right up
- 16:38Speaker 3: front with the veterans there. I'm really excited to see
- 16:42Speaker 3: how it all shakes out with Patrick Graham and just
- 16:44Speaker 3: his fresh take on an established unit.
- 16:47Speaker 2: It's going to be fun to see. I love what
- 16:48Speaker 2: you're saying about the DC there. Steelers play the Bills'
- 16:51Speaker 2: final pre-season game Thursday night, Friday morning at midnight, free.

- 17:07Speaker 2: a few terrible titles around Cork, and I think we
- 17:10Speaker 2: need to get a Steelers event in Cork, don't we?
- 17:11Speaker 2: I think we need to make it happen.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely. I think Perky Creeve, why not? Let's go
- 17:17Speaker 3: all in.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Here, thanks so much for your time. I appreciate you
