Latest / Stugotz and Company / Set 2: VCU's Historic Upset (w/ Phil Martelli Jr.)
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: It is to goat to Cup, but he presented by
- 0:09Speaker 1: FanDuel and the FanDuel sportsbook, Phil Martelly.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Junior is going to join us.
- 0:13Speaker 1: The VCU head coach. I did not do this to punish.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Taylor mike Ya. I did it so Taylor.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Can thank the VCU coach because he doesn't like Ubert Davis.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I mean about that.
- 0:25Speaker 1: VCU comes back on the first day of March, and yes,
- 0:30Speaker 1: yesterday was the first day of March.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I don't care what anyone tells me. I put it
- 0:33Speaker 2: on the pole.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Taylor was yesterday, the first day of March. Bob, Caroline
- 0:38Speaker 1: is up nineteen in that game. I am laughing at
- 0:41Speaker 1: Taylor because he's been blasting Ubert Davis, and I'm thinking
- 0:44Speaker 1: Ubert Davis is going to take this target team on
- 0:47Speaker 1: a run through the NCAA tournament. But not so fast,
- 0:50Speaker 1: my friends, Taylor put us there. What was going on
- 0:53Speaker 1: with you?
- 0:54Speaker 3: So everybody is doing this victory lap when Caroline is
- 0:57Speaker 3: up nineteen points at halftime, and I say, hey, guys,
- 1:00Speaker 3: buck Lynn, because I've watched this Carolina team, I know
- 1:04Speaker 3: what's about to come right. VCU starts Klawn Back, starts
- 1:09Speaker 3: Klawn back and I'm like, okay, this is this is
- 1:12Speaker 3: just a predictable ending now, and I'm watching this game
- 1:17Speaker 3: in the final seven forty four of game time, in
- 1:21Speaker 3: a game that went to overtime, yep, Carolina did not
- 1:25Speaker 3: make a single field goal. No, they did not make
- 1:29Speaker 3: a single field goal. They scored only three points in overtime.
- 1:32Speaker 3: And people are coming today and saying, oh, well, Hubert
- 1:35Speaker 3: Davis has to get another year because he didn't have
- 1:37Speaker 3: Caleb Wilson. We need a top five pick as North
- 1:41Speaker 3: Carolina to beat a school from the A ten.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Apparently you do.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yes, Yeah, Wait a minute, So are you going to
- 1:53Speaker 1: thank Phil Martelli Junior, as dad was a legendary coach
- 1:56Speaker 1: I know is dead very very well.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Are you going to.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Thank him for knocking off the North Carolina and Ubert Davis?
- 2:01Speaker 2: Are you upset with him? So it's conflicted.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I'm upset because I want North Carolina to win, but
- 2:08Speaker 3: I also I'm not entirely sure that like this is
- 2:11Speaker 3: the move that's gonna get North Carolina off Hubert Davis.
- 2:15Speaker 3: It kind of seems like they've dug their heels and
- 2:18Speaker 3: giving Hubert Davis more time. But at the same time,
- 2:21Speaker 3: you're watching this and being like, how much more time
- 2:24Speaker 3: do you need?
- 2:26Speaker 2: This was a big body blow.
- 2:27Speaker 4: This was a battle you have to lose in order
- 2:30Speaker 4: to lose the war or win the war. But it
- 2:34Speaker 4: wasn't only that North Carolina loss, because I mean that's bad.
- 2:38Speaker 4: You know, it's a big upset. That was some of
- 2:40Speaker 4: the ugliest basketball I've ever watched in my life. I mean,
- 2:44Speaker 4: there wasn't a score in the first like three and
- 2:47Speaker 4: a half minutes of overtime where everything is like so
- 2:51Speaker 4: compounded and nobody could score.
- 2:54Speaker 2: March so stupe.
- 2:56Speaker 3: The nineteen points. It's the largest comeback ever in the
- 3:00Speaker 3: first round of the NCAA tournament. And then this is
- 3:05Speaker 3: this is where Hubert Davis needs to get up in
- 3:08Speaker 3: his postgame press conference and to say, hand up, I'll
- 3:11Speaker 3: take accountability. This was a bad performance, the problem and
- 3:15Speaker 3: why my frustration has grown with Hubert Davis.
- 3:18Speaker 2: He refuses to do that.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Ask what went wrong for North Carolina in the second
- 3:22Speaker 3: half against VCU, Hubert Davis said, what do you mean?
- 3:26Speaker 2: Shots just didn't fall?
- 3:29Speaker 1: It's a maker, miss league Taylor. I mean, you're falling
- 3:33Speaker 1: in the first half of it.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Just because you miss a shot doesn't mean something is wrong.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Right, people were criticizing all of them, right, every shot,
- 3:44Speaker 1: put it on the poll. If you miss every shot
- 3:46Speaker 1: is something off. How about people criticizing Hubert Davis and
- 3:52Speaker 1: the Carolina team for not being in good enough shape?
- 3:56Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 3:57Speaker 2: See that?
- 3:57Speaker 3: Yeah, VCU ran a side of the gym.
- 4:01Speaker 2: They did. My problem. My problem.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Listen, a Martelli led team, they can run, they can
- 4:06Speaker 1: play for days.
- 4:07Speaker 2: I am telling you I know the Martelli's.
- 4:09Speaker 1: The Martelli's will go out on a concrete basketball court
- 4:12Speaker 1: and they will play you and fight you to the death. Okay,
- 4:15Speaker 1: that team is in shape, I promise you.
- 4:16Speaker 3: My bigger problem with Hubert Davis is just STU, Where
- 4:21Speaker 3: would you consider the North Carolina job in the landscape
- 4:23Speaker 3: of college basketball?
- 4:25Speaker 2: Top five job, top five easily.
- 4:28Speaker 3: And Hubert Davis if every coach suddenly became available in
- 4:33Speaker 3: a weird world where every coach's contract got erased, I
- 4:37Speaker 3: don't think a single school in the top forty would
- 4:41Speaker 3: even give Hubert Davis a call.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Put it on the ball.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Would VC you give Hubert Davis an opening head coaching job?
- 4:50Speaker 2: They have their guy.
- 4:52Speaker 3: And then the other defense. Oh, Hubert Davis made a
- 4:55Speaker 3: Final four in twenty twenty two. Look at some of
- 4:58Speaker 3: the teams that have made final fource since twenty twenty two.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Yeah, Jim Laernega, who.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Just basically quit Miami, was like, I'm not the guy
- 5:06Speaker 3: for this job anymore.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Kevin Keats from NC State, who even n C State
- 5:12Speaker 3: was like, hey, Kevin Keats, thanks, thanks for making that
- 5:15Speaker 3: Final four for us, but you're kind of not that
- 5:17Speaker 3: good of a coach.
- 5:18Speaker 2: We have to find somebody new.
- 5:20Speaker 3: But no, Hubert Davis, he's untouchable as a Carolina guy.
- 5:25Speaker 1: You said yesterday you were preparing yourself for the loss
- 5:28Speaker 1: of ECU.
- 5:29Speaker 2: It seems like you prepared yourself well.
- 5:31Speaker 3: I mean, it was so predictable. I didn't even let
- 5:37Speaker 3: myself get excited. When they were up nineteen. People are
- 5:41Speaker 3: texting me, Oh, Carolina ninety eight point seven win probability.
- 5:45Speaker 3: I'm like, you want to see one point three percent
- 5:47Speaker 3: right now?
- 5:48Speaker 1: You're about to Yeah, Taylor knows when you have Yubert
- 5:51Speaker 1: Davis up to nineteen in the second.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Half, you have them right where you want them.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I mean, is that essentially what you're saying. Yeah, they
- 6:00Speaker 1: were up nineteen, Taylor nineteen points against the team from
- 6:04Speaker 1: the A dead.
- 6:07Speaker 2: This is part of a bigger problem.
- 6:09Speaker 4: When like Hubert Davis is a North Carolina guy, you
- 6:12Speaker 4: shouldn't hire guys that were like great for your school
- 6:16Speaker 4: or your program before, because it makes it that much
- 6:19Speaker 4: harder to get rid of them. You should only hire
- 6:21Speaker 4: people from your rival. This way, you're like, no, I'll
- 6:24Speaker 4: easily fire that guy.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Right, hire a Duke guy?
- 6:27Speaker 1: Yes, like Duke right, Penny orway essentially right, ridd my guy?
- 6:33Speaker 2: How easy is it is to fire him? Today?
- 6:35Speaker 4: You lost and you went to Duke get out?
- 6:39Speaker 1: But do you know how badly Carolina fans would revolt
- 6:44Speaker 1: at the notion of them signing a Duke guy to
- 6:47Speaker 1: be their head coach.
- 6:48Speaker 2: They would like it? Am I wrong?
- 6:49Speaker 5: Taylor?
- 6:51Speaker 3: No, it would never have to get to that. But
- 6:54Speaker 3: we don't have to keep hiring people in the family
- 6:57Speaker 3: like right now. When I say Hubert David needs to
- 7:00Speaker 3: be replaced, the first question is always, well, who are
- 7:02Speaker 3: you going to replace them with?
- 7:04Speaker 2: Top that job? There's whatever you want, whoever you want.
- 7:09Speaker 2: It's the top five job. I mean, Patina would leave
- 7:12Speaker 2: for it.
- 7:15Speaker 3: There are about twenty head coaches in college basketball that
- 7:20Speaker 3: would have to tell me no before I even start
- 7:23Speaker 3: to panic. Before I even have some doubt in my mind,
- 7:28Speaker 3: and I see some Carolina fans who, again, the family
- 7:33Speaker 3: hires have been a problem for Carolina in the past,
- 7:36Speaker 3: and it's again a problem where I'm seeing people saying like, oh,
- 7:40Speaker 3: if you get rid of Hubert Davis, why not hire
- 7:42Speaker 3: Wes Miller who played at Carolina and just got fired
- 7:45Speaker 3: from Cincinnati, or hired Jerry Stackhouse who got fired from Vanderbilt.
- 7:49Speaker 3: I'm like, guys, everybody, take a deep breath right now, right, yeah,
- 7:55Speaker 3: and remember how we got here.
- 7:56Speaker 1: M hm, yes, yeah, with Dean Yeah, Roy Williams. There
- 8:07Speaker 1: are listen, it's a top five job, and there are
- 8:11Speaker 1: guys who are coaching right now, big names. You're right, Taylor,
- 8:13Speaker 1: if you opened that job up to just about anyone,
- 8:17Speaker 1: the resumes that are going to come across your desk
- 8:20Speaker 1: to be the next next head coach at the University
- 8:23Speaker 1: of North Carolina, a storied program of blue blood I
- 8:27Speaker 1: mean they are It would be absurd the amount of
- 8:30Speaker 1: interest that that job would Gardner, Hell, they opened up
- 8:33Speaker 1: their football job at Belichick came there.
- 8:35Speaker 2: I mean that. Yeah that was a disaster too, Yeah
- 8:39Speaker 2: it was.
- 8:40Speaker 1: But I'm serious, Like, guys like I'm not certain Danny
- 8:43Speaker 1: Hurley would sit down with his agent and at least contemplation,
- 8:46Speaker 1: I leave Yukon for North Carolina. Seriously, that's how big
- 8:49Speaker 1: of a job it is. I mean, Mike, you are
- 8:51Speaker 1: you disagreeing?
- 8:53Speaker 2: No?
- 8:53Speaker 4: I mean he didn't take the Lakers job, so I
- 8:57Speaker 4: have a hard time thinking.
- 8:58Speaker 2: And he's going to go to North Carolina. Wants to
- 9:00Speaker 2: coach Luca.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I mean, honestly, Lebron, they're so good now. Coach of
- 9:11Speaker 1: the Year, Lebron James. I'll put it on then put
- 9:16Speaker 1: it on the Bowl handler should Lebron James be the
- 9:19Speaker 1: NBA Coach of the Year, Lebron would consider Carolina. NBA
- 9:23Speaker 1: coaches would consider Carolina. I'm just telling you, like Rick
- 9:26Speaker 1: Patino slam dunk, if you're like, hey, the job is
- 9:29Speaker 1: open to anyone, anyone, come get it. Rick Patina would
- 9:33Speaker 1: leave Saint John so quickly if he knew that North
- 9:36Speaker 1: Carolina was going to hire.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Him to be the next head coach.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Taylor, you agree with that, right, It's just a bigger
- 9:41Speaker 1: and better job.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 3: And you know you can't spell coach Cow without Carolina.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Steve Belichick.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Maybe Cow would definitely leave Arkansas Steve, It's why you
- 9:59Speaker 1: were still there.
- 10:00Speaker 2: It's the unknown part of Bill's contract.
- 10:04Speaker 1: If the basketball coach gets fired, Steve is his replacements.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Oh my god, Taylor, I'm sorry, but I'm not because
- 10:17Speaker 1: this is it's what's best.
- 10:18Speaker 2: For the ship.
- 10:22Speaker 3: The part that makes it a compounding problem, too, is
- 10:26Speaker 3: that Duke is lapping North Carolina right now, like Stu.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I don't know if you watched.
- 10:31Speaker 3: The uh A couple of a couple of days ago
- 10:35Speaker 3: when they were in the A Tournament, when North Carolina
- 10:37Speaker 3: lost to Clemson, they had a look aheadline. If North
- 10:40Speaker 3: Carolina played Duke in the semi finals of the ACC Tournament,
- 10:45Speaker 3: Duke would have been an eighteen and a half point
- 10:48Speaker 3: favorite over North Carolina.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Jesus, they're supposed to be equals.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Just for context, I think Miami of Ohio is an
- 10:59Speaker 3: eleven and a half point underdog today against Tennessee. So
- 11:03Speaker 3: Caroline's almost double that against Duke on a neutral court.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Unbelievable. Yesterday is what March was all about. I mean, listen,
- 11:12Speaker 1: I'm trying to figure out if it was a good
- 11:15Speaker 1: day or a bad day for you. I guess it's
- 11:17Speaker 1: a bad day. You lost, and you know your coach
- 11:19Speaker 1: is coming back again. The coach that you don't want
- 11:21Speaker 1: coaching your team is still going to be back for
- 11:23Speaker 1: another year. But man, was that a great opening day
- 11:26Speaker 1: of the NCAA tournament.
- 11:27Speaker 2: That's what it's all about. It's why we love it.
- 11:29Speaker 2: It's why we.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Don't pay attention to the entire regular season and start
- 11:31Speaker 1: paying attention in March.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I mean, single elimination, nothing like it. Let's get to the.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Polls before we get to Phil Moore, Telly Junior. No
- 11:43Speaker 1: radio today, We're just doing the pods. We will have
- 11:46Speaker 1: Robert Parrish the chief later on. I'm excited for that
- 11:50Speaker 1: and Bill Barnwell. But since we're not going to be
- 11:52Speaker 1: on radio and not going to have the ability to
- 11:54Speaker 1: update the polls live, we will do it here on
- 11:57Speaker 1: the pod.
- 11:58Speaker 2: So Taylor take it away.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Should the MLB replace its regular season with more World
- 12:04Speaker 3: Baseball Classic?
- 12:06Speaker 2: Yes? No, no brainer. Yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Seventy one percent of the audience said yes, yep. This
- 12:14Speaker 3: one comes courtesy of when we had Tate Fraser on,
- 12:18Speaker 3: does Mark Few have something up his sleeve for Tomay?
- 12:20Speaker 4: Lady?
- 12:25Speaker 2: As Gonzagaa played? Yet did they play? They want? Yes?
- 12:27Speaker 2: They won? Zaga won last night. Yeah, they survived and advanced.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Yes, sixty one percent of the audience said yes, Mark,
- 12:37Speaker 3: few guys have something up his sleeve.
- 12:39Speaker 2: All right, right, next pole question, If a.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Nolan McLean Eduardo Rodriguez pitching matchup doesn't get you excited,
- 12:46Speaker 3: check your pulse.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Matchup kind of delivered it did. Yeah, they were great,
- 12:55Speaker 2: big spots, both of them. Yeah.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Fifty seven percent of the audio audience said yes. Have
- 13:04Speaker 3: the five hundred loudest moments in Lone Depot Park history
- 13:08Speaker 3: all have been the Baseball Classic and none from the Marlins.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Yes, yes, that better come back.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Not one hundred percent, but as close as we've come
- 13:19Speaker 3: this week. Ninety four percent of the audience yes.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Okay, okay, six percent tell me the event you've been
- 13:25Speaker 1: to at Loan Depot Park that was louder than that.
- 13:28Speaker 2: There is no dopes.
- 13:30Speaker 3: This one comes courtesy of having Mike Gollick on this
- 13:33Speaker 3: week and something Steve Gott said, can you ever say
- 13:36Speaker 3: poor Max Crosby when he's making thirty five and a
- 13:40Speaker 3: half million dollars a year?
- 13:41Speaker 2: I felt terrible for him. I mean I'm sorry.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Eighty six percent of the audience said no, he could
- 13:48Speaker 3: wipe those tears away with a few hundred dollars bills.
- 13:51Speaker 2: They're right?
- 13:52Speaker 3: I mean, will we forget Bryce Harper's home run by
- 13:56Speaker 3: next week?
- 13:57Speaker 2: Already forgotten? That means what HAPs to mark? What home
- 14:00Speaker 2: run did he hit? Was it a big one?
- 14:11Speaker 3: Ninety two percent of the audience said yes, all right,
- 14:15Speaker 3: and will be opening days?
- 14:16Speaker 2: Kind of sneaking up on us. It's Wednesday, it is,
- 14:19Speaker 2: It's Wednesday. When was that World Baseball Classic Final? When
- 14:22Speaker 2: was that?
- 14:22Speaker 1: Because we said by next week, I think I feel
- 14:24Speaker 1: like we've already forgotten about it.
- 14:26Speaker 2: It was again, I think it was Monday.
- 14:28Speaker 1: It was like forty eight Tuesday, Tuesday forgotten?
- 14:33Speaker 2: Oh god, this one comes when.
- 14:35Speaker 3: We had Salakata on stop letting map manage baseball games?
- 14:40Speaker 2: Yep, I've been saying that for years. Yes, thank you
- 14:44Speaker 2: need Moore gut.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Seventy eight percent of the audience said yes, yeah. Are
- 14:49Speaker 3: we making batting cages like we used to?
- 14:54Speaker 2: I believe that was your claim.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike, if you wanted to take your son to
- 14:59Speaker 3: a batting cage, what's the closest batting cage to you?
- 15:03Speaker 4: So here's that there's private like batting cage clubs where
- 15:07Speaker 4: you can like.
- 15:08Speaker 2: That sign it.
- 15:09Speaker 4: It's it's not like you can just go and put
- 15:11Speaker 4: a coin in the machine and you get Yeah no,
- 15:14Speaker 4: that's probably at least forty minutes away, jez.
- 15:18Speaker 1: But it's still But when you get there, is it
- 15:21Speaker 1: is it like.
- 15:21Speaker 2: It used to be?
- 15:22Speaker 3: Or no?
- 15:22Speaker 2: I mean yeah, you.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Know it's those gross yellow balls that you hit it
- 15:27Speaker 4: and it goes into the little thing and it carries
- 15:29Speaker 4: all the way back and one pitch will be two
- 15:32Speaker 4: hundred miles an hour at your head and the next
- 15:34Speaker 4: one bounces.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what a pitching machine is all about. Man.
- 15:40Speaker 2: You never know where it's gonna go.
- 15:42Speaker 4: And I just stand right outside and go, come on,
- 15:44Speaker 4: put your keep your head in there.
- 15:47Speaker 1: They have batting cage clubs now, I mean, Jesus, enough
- 15:50Speaker 1: of the couch. Yeah yeah, yeah, they have golf simulator
- 15:54Speaker 1: clubs now.
- 15:55Speaker 2: It's annoying, all of it.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Yes, this goes back to do me a favor. Stop
- 15:58Speaker 4: with the fund raising. I already paid two hundred dollars
- 16:01Speaker 4: to be part of this club. You don't now need
- 16:03Speaker 4: me to contribute to a lotto basket so that I
- 16:06Speaker 4: can buy raffle.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Tickets for it. Understood? Yeah, alright, go ahead.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Ninety percent of the audience said, no, we're not making
- 16:14Speaker 3: batting cages like we used to. If you went to
- 16:17Speaker 3: USA's clubhouse at Lone Depot Park right now, when you
- 16:20Speaker 3: find all those silver.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Medals just sitting there in a little bott on the corner.
- 16:28Speaker 4: If I could name a Marlin's player, I'd say one
- 16:30Speaker 4: is in his locker, but I can't.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Jeff Conine's still there, Ahn, mister Marlin.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Eighty one percent of the audience said yes. This one
- 16:44Speaker 3: comes also courtesy of Salacato when he was talking about
- 16:48Speaker 3: how bad Mark de Rosa's interview was with the Mets.
- 16:52Speaker 3: When you say I don't want to rip the guy,
- 16:54Speaker 3: does that mean you're just about to rip the guy?
- 16:56Speaker 2: Yes, he did. He said I don't want to rip
- 16:58Speaker 2: the guy.
- 16:59Speaker 1: I said, yeah, but you're about ripped the guy, and
- 17:00Speaker 1: he ripped the guy.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Of course. That's undred percent right.
- 17:04Speaker 3: As close as we've come this week. Ninety seven percent
- 17:09Speaker 3: of the audience said yes, all.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Right, we'll take it. That's consensus.
- 17:13Speaker 3: And then the final poll question this week, if you
- 17:16Speaker 3: put Austin Reeves on a sixteen seed, now, would they
- 17:20Speaker 3: win the NCAA Tournament. This one comes courtesy of think
- 17:24Speaker 3: about It Thursday.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Yes, yes, that segment that you created that you're very
- 17:28Speaker 1: proud of because you're counter programming a national show with
- 17:33Speaker 1: a local show down here on five sixty in Miami.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Yes, this one is close.
- 17:39Speaker 3: I think Austin Reeves was the perfect person to get
- 17:42Speaker 3: a litmus test on Yes, fifty four percent of the
- 17:46Speaker 3: audience said yes, Austin Reeves would be cutting down.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Netso really, I mean, Jesus, have they seen VCU?
- 17:57Speaker 2: Those are the false.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Bill Martelly Junior, the head coach of VCU, will join
- 18:05Speaker 1: us coming up next. It was an upset for the
- 18:12Speaker 1: Agies yesterday. It was in large bar because Taylor, our
- 18:16Speaker 1: executive producer, went to North Carolina. Carolina was up nineteen,
- 18:20Speaker 1: but VCU came storming back in. They advance in the
- 18:24Speaker 1: NCAA tournament, and their coach nice enough to join us.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Phil Mortelly Junior. I have known his dad for a
- 18:30Speaker 1: very long time. I'm super happy for this family. I
- 18:33Speaker 1: told him right before we started. After you beat Carolina,
- 18:36Speaker 1: you should get out of the NBC.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Suites and get into a four seasons hotel. Good morning
- 18:41Speaker 2: to your coach.
- 18:42Speaker 6: Yeah we're still here. Well, we stick to our roots.
- 18:45Speaker 6: You know, we're still at that EMBSC suites. But it's
- 18:47Speaker 6: been good to us.
- 18:48Speaker 5: Watch.
- 18:49Speaker 6: I'm a you know, I come from places like Bryant,
- 18:52Speaker 6: where I was like, what's the cheapest rate? Okay, yeah,
- 18:55Speaker 6: you're staying at that place, Like I don't know if
- 18:57Speaker 6: we can stay here, and.
- 18:59Speaker 5: Like, no, that's keep his right to your thing.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Yeah I do.
- 19:02Speaker 6: I do, see Taylor give me that evil eye, like
- 19:03Speaker 6: this freaking guy right, Like, I keep seeing that.
- 19:07Speaker 5: It is a little distracting, but.
- 19:08Speaker 2: It's fair Carolina helmet right beyond you.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, said it was a great upset. I am
- 19:16Speaker 3: upset today. I called the a D and I said,
- 19:20Speaker 3: I want Martelly next season at Carolina.
- 19:23Speaker 1: That's making Martelly's happy where he is.
- 19:26Speaker 5: He's very happy where I am.
- 19:27Speaker 6: I'm at a great place, a great university, right, you know,
- 19:31Speaker 6: that's that's that's it. I would like to have to
- 19:33Speaker 6: sit down with Belichick though, I would like to sit
- 19:36Speaker 6: there and pick his brain, you know, because obviously the
- 19:38Speaker 6: amount of games that guy's won. But yes, I'm at
- 19:41Speaker 6: a great place. Carolina is a great university, obviously a
- 19:44Speaker 6: great program. But I am very fortunate to be at VCU.
- 19:47Speaker 6: It is an incredible university and with great leadership. So
- 19:50Speaker 6: I'm thankful to all of them.
- 19:52Speaker 1: If Taylor was being honest, he would tell you, Belichick
- 19:55Speaker 1: about you.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Win some of those games at North Carolina.
- 19:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I get that, I understand that.
- 19:59Speaker 1: I understand mikey A had a great idea if you win,
- 20:03Speaker 1: if you beat North Carolina and your VCU, you should
- 20:07Speaker 1: get to take their hotel rooms.
- 20:08Speaker 2: How about that.
- 20:12Speaker 5: Offered some awkward encounters.
- 20:14Speaker 6: I think one team's getting off the bus with their bags,
- 20:17Speaker 6: the others getting.
- 20:18Speaker 5: On with their bags.
- 20:19Speaker 6: Yes, I don't know where they stayed. They must have
- 20:21Speaker 6: been right down here. I'll tell you this. I like Greenville,
- 20:25Speaker 6: South Carolina. What a great place, great little city, great
- 20:28Speaker 6: little town. You know, we're right downtown here. It's a
- 20:32Speaker 6: good spot. It's a good spot.
- 20:33Speaker 1: It's a very nice spot. Underrated spot. Yes, what do
- 20:37Speaker 1: you tell your kids? I'm wondering when you're down nineteen
- 20:40Speaker 1: first round of the NCAA Tournament, is there a moment?
- 20:44Speaker 2: What do you say to your kids?
- 20:45Speaker 1: How do you keep them going and moving forward and
- 20:47Speaker 1: inspiring a comeback like the one they had last night.
- 20:50Speaker 6: Well, they've been really resilient from the get go, and
- 20:54Speaker 6: the story I keep telling is our second game of
- 20:56Speaker 6: the year. We played Utah State. Utah State's in an
- 20:58Speaker 6: eight nine game today. Really good team. They had done
- 21:01Speaker 6: what we did, you know, what we wanted to do.
- 21:03Speaker 5: Last year.
- 21:04Speaker 6: They had a new coach, won a million games, went
- 21:06Speaker 6: to the nca tournament. They had a group that came back,
- 21:09Speaker 6: so they were going to be really good. So the
- 21:12Speaker 6: second game of the year, it was a Friday night,
- 21:13Speaker 6: that first Friday in November, November seventh. I think maybe
- 21:17Speaker 6: we went and played them on the neutral floor in Texas,
- 21:20Speaker 6: and same type of deal. We went down early in
- 21:23Speaker 6: the second half. We got down seventeen, maybe even a
- 21:26Speaker 6: little bit later. It might have been like with ten
- 21:28Speaker 6: or eleven minutes left, and we stormed all the way back,
- 21:31Speaker 6: tied the game, had a chance to win.
- 21:33Speaker 5: They wanted on the last possession, and obviously disappointed to lose.
- 21:37Speaker 6: But I walked out and I was like, man, this
- 21:39Speaker 6: group's got something, and you know, we battle We tested
- 21:43Speaker 6: ourselves all the way through. We were battle tested from
- 21:45Speaker 6: the get go, and you know, played a really tough
- 21:47Speaker 6: non conference to be able to win these types of games.
- 21:51Speaker 6: We had that happen in a couple of times throughout
- 21:53Speaker 6: the season where like we got down and there was
- 21:55Speaker 6: never a oh my god, what's going to happen?
- 21:58Speaker 5: Especially the second game of the year. Right, it's easy
- 21:59Speaker 5: to go like, all right, new coach, like what's he doing?
- 22:02Speaker 6: And he didn't play me, I didn't play not if
- 22:03Speaker 6: this guy did that guy whatever, And they never did that.
- 22:06Speaker 5: And it was the same last night. You could feel it.
- 22:08Speaker 6: They were just like, we just needed to make the
- 22:10Speaker 6: next play, you know, whether it was offensive defense, just
- 22:12Speaker 6: make the next play, you know, and just let it
- 22:15Speaker 6: snowball from there.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Is there a point in that game where you don't.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Say it outwardly, but are you thinking, man, this is
- 22:22Speaker 1: how the season's going to end? Or can a head
- 22:23Speaker 1: coach nothing like that at any moment of any game?
- 22:26Speaker 5: Yeah? I really didn't think like that.
- 22:28Speaker 6: I just I kept thinking, like, what's the what haven't
- 22:31Speaker 6: we tried that we can we can go to We
- 22:33Speaker 6: went to our three smaller guards, you know, our wings
- 22:37Speaker 6: were they were battling the defensive end, but couldn't get
- 22:40Speaker 6: anything going on the offensive end.
- 22:42Speaker 5: You know.
- 22:42Speaker 6: We went to the three smaller guards just to give
- 22:44Speaker 6: them a different look and see if that was something
- 22:46Speaker 6: that would kind of shake things up, and it did.
- 22:49Speaker 6: You know, I was worried about our rebounding, but those
- 22:51Speaker 6: guys were in there a rebound and then once they rebounded,
- 22:53Speaker 6: we were able to get out and play in the
- 22:55Speaker 6: open floor, which is where we're really good. So yeah,
- 22:58Speaker 6: it was always just like, all right, what else can
- 23:00Speaker 6: we do? Can do we try something different, Try something
- 23:02Speaker 6: different defensively, try something different on offense, a different lineup.
- 23:05Speaker 5: It really was just that all the way through.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Coach is a former broadcasting student.
- 23:10Speaker 4: I got to ask you about that moment on the
- 23:12Speaker 4: podium you had with the student broadcast, and can you
- 23:14Speaker 4: tell us a little bit about that.
- 23:16Speaker 6: Yeah, they really are awesome and I've done that a
- 23:18Speaker 6: couple of times. I'm glad that they got that on
- 23:21Speaker 6: the national stage. You know, they there's a number of them.
- 23:25Speaker 6: There's there's three young guys that they pretty much come
- 23:29Speaker 6: to every weekly press conference. I mean those are like
- 23:31Speaker 6: eleven o'clock on Monday and Tuesday. I don't know when
- 23:33Speaker 6: they go to class, And I've never asked them that question.
- 23:37Speaker 2: They don't.
- 23:37Speaker 5: They're there every time. They're there every time.
- 23:40Speaker 6: Yes, those saying three guys they drove to Davidson when
- 23:44Speaker 6: we had the huge snowstorms coming up and down the
- 23:46Speaker 6: East coast. They drove and I was like, after the game,
- 23:48Speaker 6: I'm like you, like, where are you guys staying tonight?
- 23:51Speaker 6: Like you're not driving back? I'm like, you can't drive back. Fortunately,
- 23:54Speaker 6: they did have a place to stay. I mean they've
- 23:57Speaker 6: flown out the different places again on their own dime.
- 23:59Speaker 6: You know, they are doing it on their own dome.
- 24:01Speaker 2: So great.
- 24:02Speaker 6: He's a young lady and another another young man from
- 24:04Speaker 6: the newspaper that. Uh, they've been to a bunch of
- 24:07Speaker 6: practices covering our guys writing stories. So I'm really happy
- 24:11Speaker 6: that they get to experience this and be part of this.
- 24:13Speaker 6: And you know, somebody somewhere, whether it's radio, whether it's TV,
- 24:18Speaker 6: whether it's thinkers, whatever, they're going to hire those kids
- 24:21Speaker 6: and they're going to be really thankful they did, because
- 24:23Speaker 6: they are they are thoughtful, they are genuine.
- 24:26Speaker 5: Uh, they are thorough with.
- 24:27Speaker 6: What they do and I'm really grateful for what they
- 24:31Speaker 6: do for us.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Tonight they should say in Youbert Davis's room, how about that?
- 24:35Speaker 2: I mean I did say he did say that he
- 24:38Speaker 2: wasn't even thinking it. That was me. It was my
- 24:39Speaker 2: dumb joke. Yes, no, not you.
- 24:42Speaker 1: You are a humble advancer and c double a jornament.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I am wondering here as the as the son of
- 24:49Speaker 1: a legendary coach when you were born at Phil Martelly
- 24:53Speaker 1: is his name. But when you're born and you get
- 24:56Speaker 1: to a certain age and realize I'm Phil Martelly junior, Like,
- 25:00Speaker 1: what age did you know you were going to be
- 25:02Speaker 1: a head coach because of the name and the heritage
- 25:05Speaker 1: and and because of what your dad did well?
- 25:08Speaker 6: When I was in uh, probably somewhere around seventh grade,
- 25:13Speaker 6: you know, like anybody, I wanted to I wanted to
- 25:15Speaker 6: play in the NBA, right, So I wanted to play
- 25:17Speaker 6: in the NBA. Got to seventh grade, you start looking around.
- 25:20Speaker 6: I'm like, I don't see a whole lot of unathletic
- 25:23Speaker 6: you know, five eleven white guys. John Stocktram was kind
- 25:27Speaker 6: of the only one. So does then you start going like,
- 25:29Speaker 6: what's my backup plan here? And ironically, the two things
- 25:33Speaker 6: that I wanted to do. I loved sports talk radio.
- 25:36Speaker 6: I loved w IP in Philadelphia Nice listened to that religiously.
- 25:40Speaker 6: So I either wanted to do that or I wanted
- 25:42Speaker 6: to coach. And coaching went out pretty quick after that.
- 25:46Speaker 5: From that point on, I started any chance I had.
- 25:48Speaker 5: When I wasn't playing.
- 25:50Speaker 6: You know, when I was in high school, I was
- 25:51Speaker 6: helping coach my my grade school cyo team. You know,
- 25:54Speaker 6: when I was in college, I was coaching you know,
- 25:58Speaker 6: the local high school summer league, the Sunny Hill League,
- 26:00Speaker 6: which every Philadelphia basketball player played in, the Narvith Basketball League,
- 26:04Speaker 6: which every Philadelphia basketball player. I was coaching those legs,
- 26:07Speaker 6: and yeah, I loved it from the get go.
- 26:11Speaker 5: And now I'm on the other side.
- 26:13Speaker 6: My sixteen year old Philip Stephen, he is like he
- 26:19Speaker 6: knows more than I do. Like there's most of the
- 26:20Speaker 6: time he tells me things and I'm like, yeah, I
- 26:22Speaker 6: already knew that.
- 26:23Speaker 5: And then I'm like looking at my phone, like.
- 26:26Speaker 6: Right, like know that, and he sees things and you know,
- 26:30Speaker 6: he's still playing, but you know he's already talking about
- 26:32Speaker 6: when he's done, he wants to coach. He wants to coach.
- 26:34Speaker 6: So you know, it's really cool to see that and
- 26:36Speaker 6: kind of pass that along. It's it's in our blood.
- 26:38Speaker 6: I mean, I'm you know, we're a basketball family. My
- 26:41Speaker 6: wife played and coach. She played in the Division III
- 26:43Speaker 6: National championship game her senior year.
- 26:45Speaker 5: Her dad's a long time high school coach up in Connecticut.
- 26:48Speaker 6: Like, you know, her and I met working in a basketball camp,
- 26:51Speaker 6: you know, so that's just who we are, and.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Right, so I'm guessing she was the least impressed of
- 26:57Speaker 1: everyone you had in the audience last night in terms
- 26:59Speaker 1: of family, right, Yeah.
- 27:00Speaker 5: Her and my mom, I mean the two of them.
- 27:02Speaker 6: She played, So Megan played in the Division three national championship.
- 27:06Speaker 5: Game her senior year. They lost at the Buzzer.
- 27:09Speaker 6: My mom played on those EMACI a lot of teams
- 27:12Speaker 6: that won three straight national championships in the seventies. And
- 27:15Speaker 6: actually she had sent me something before the game yesterday
- 27:18Speaker 6: was fifty six days to the I'm sorry, fifty four
- 27:22Speaker 6: years to the day of their first national championship, their
- 27:25Speaker 6: first of three. So yeah, anytime, you know, my dad
- 27:28Speaker 6: went to the sweet sixteen, the lead eight. You know,
- 27:30Speaker 6: we went a tournament game. Both of them are looking
- 27:32Speaker 6: at us like this is cute and all, but you understand,
- 27:35Speaker 6: like we went to the national championship.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Right, What was the embrace like with dad after the game.
- 27:40Speaker 5: Oh, it was so awesome.
- 27:41Speaker 6: Yeah, again, being being on that side so many times
- 27:44Speaker 6: and watching you do it.
- 27:46Speaker 1: I'm telling you from his side, it's better watching you
- 27:48Speaker 1: do it than doing it.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Yeah. I lived that with my daughter. Yes, yes, I
- 27:52Speaker 2: get that.
- 27:53Speaker 6: And you can feel it and to see the pride
- 27:56Speaker 6: and the joy in his eyes, you know.
- 27:59Speaker 5: And I actually didn't see it till very recently had it.
- 28:02Speaker 6: My brother is my associate head coach, my brother Jimmy,
- 28:05Speaker 6: and so he's on our staff, and they had a
- 28:07Speaker 6: huge embrace, you know, tears in their eyes.
- 28:10Speaker 5: It's just really cool.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Coach, How does your game plan kind of go out
- 28:13Speaker 3: the window when somebody like Terrence Hill Junior off the
- 28:17Speaker 3: bench scores thirty four and he is just anything he
- 28:20Speaker 3: throws up is seemingly going in.
- 28:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:23Speaker 6: We've had that a number of times this year with Terrence.
- 28:25Speaker 6: You know, he's just one of those guys. You know
- 28:27Speaker 6: that is that is part of the game plan. It's
- 28:29Speaker 6: not the whole game plan, but it is part of
- 28:30Speaker 6: the game plan. What I say all the time is this,
- 28:34Speaker 6: I want to get hoopers and I want to let
- 28:35Speaker 6: them hoop. I don't want to turn them into robots.
- 28:37Speaker 6: I'm not trying to get them into like cyborgs. Right,
- 28:39Speaker 6: I'm not a scientist. I don't know anything about that.
- 28:41Speaker 6: I don't you know. I want to get hoopers. I
- 28:43Speaker 6: want to let them hoop, and he's a hooper. And
- 28:47Speaker 6: you know, at that point time, it's just all right,
- 28:49Speaker 6: he's got it going. We got to get the ball
- 28:51Speaker 6: in his hands in the right spots, you know, and
- 28:54Speaker 6: trust he's going to make the right play because he's
- 28:56Speaker 6: done that. He started the year he was shooting the
- 28:59Speaker 6: ball at like a ridiculous pace, so it became like shooter, shooter, shooter,
- 29:02Speaker 6: and everybody's trying to run him off the three point line. Well,
- 29:05Speaker 6: then he's able to score around the rim, and then
- 29:06Speaker 6: it was like, all right, he's a scorer. We got
- 29:08Speaker 6: to get the ball of his hands. And then he
- 29:09Speaker 6: turns into you know, having games of seven, eight, nine assists,
- 29:12Speaker 6: no turnovers, and you're like, the dude's just a player,
- 29:15Speaker 6: and I trust him, and he trusts me that I'm
- 29:17Speaker 6: going to put him in the right spots and I
- 29:19Speaker 6: trust that he's gonna you know, he's going to make
- 29:21Speaker 6: the right play.
- 29:22Speaker 5: If it's for him, he'll get the shot.
- 29:23Speaker 6: If it's he comes off and there's two guys on him,
- 29:26Speaker 6: he's going to make the right play and get somebody
- 29:27Speaker 6: else's shot.
- 29:29Speaker 1: You chose wisely by choosing coaching. But if you want
- 29:32Speaker 1: the offseason, I know it's a year round job, but
- 29:34Speaker 1: if you want to get some sports radio.
- 29:36Speaker 2: When you I mean, we will offer you a job
- 29:37Speaker 2: right now.
- 29:38Speaker 5: I love it.
- 29:39Speaker 6: Yes, yes, it's what I listened to when I'm dropping
- 29:42Speaker 6: the kids off. My wife always says, or my daughter
- 29:44Speaker 6: will always say, like, can we listen to some music?
- 29:47Speaker 5: Like that?
- 29:47Speaker 6: Should always say that to my wife, like can you
- 29:49Speaker 6: bring the school? Dad's always listening to bullying sports radio,
- 29:52Speaker 6: like it's not boring. I'm like, I'm listening to all
- 29:54Speaker 6: of it. I'm here for all.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Yeah, but to them it's dreadful.
- 29:58Speaker 6: Yeah, well, what's better, Like, let's let's debate let's debate
- 30:03Speaker 6: the NFL schedule in may you know, talking about like
- 30:06Speaker 6: you know, scrutinize the NFL like it's just awesome. I mean,
- 30:09Speaker 6: sports are great. They give us these moments. What could
- 30:11Speaker 6: be better than that?
- 30:12Speaker 2: I feel like, you know us, I mean, did you
- 30:15Speaker 2: also want Patula fired?
- 30:18Speaker 6: I don't want to see any coach fired, right, I
- 30:21Speaker 6: mean obviously it was what it was. It's just amazing
- 30:27Speaker 6: to me though, and it is. It's Philadelphia. It's why
- 30:29Speaker 6: I love Philadelphia. Now I will say that I like
- 30:32Speaker 6: the Eagles, I love the Phillies. I like the Eagles,
- 30:35Speaker 6: but I love the Phillies.
- 30:36Speaker 2: It's a baseball town, it is, Yeah, I mean I.
- 30:38Speaker 5: Love the Phillies. Like I am, like, like I checked
- 30:42Speaker 5: the spring training scores.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Why, But I do like my sports man, my eight year.
- 30:48Speaker 5: Old he's got the bug.
- 30:49Speaker 6: My eight year old mate, he's saying to me the
- 30:52Speaker 6: one day, like last week, he's like his dad, Phillies
- 30:55Speaker 6: gonna stink their their spring training record is horrible.
- 30:57Speaker 5: I was like, all right, I feel like I've raised
- 31:00Speaker 5: you well.
- 31:00Speaker 6: But at the same time, like, right, come on, dude,
- 31:02Speaker 6: like you're eight, Like, just be excited about Bryce Harper.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Uh, well you were. You all jacked up with that
- 31:08Speaker 2: home run in the World Baseball.
- 31:10Speaker 6: Send it to send it to him. The next morning
- 31:13Speaker 6: we were here in the embassy. Is the beautiful MBSC.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Suite of course.
- 31:16Speaker 6: Yes, When Nate woke up, that was the first thing
- 31:19Speaker 6: I showed him. I said, yeah, I said, Harper hit
- 31:20Speaker 6: a home run last night. I said, they lost, but
- 31:23Speaker 6: he hit a home run, right.
- 31:25Speaker 3: I was impressed with Aaron Nolan in the World Baseball Classic.
- 31:27Speaker 3: I think he has a bounce back year this year.
- 31:29Speaker 6: That I mean, we need that. We need that big time, Yeah,
- 31:33Speaker 6: big time. He's right, Sanchez is the monster. You know,
- 31:37Speaker 6: Romero is really good. Like you know, if if you
- 31:40Speaker 6: get Nola on the bounce back, Wheeler comes back healthy
- 31:43Speaker 6: hopefully you know those four guys that that's a hell
- 31:46Speaker 6: offul lineup for there.
- 31:47Speaker 1: It was bullshit though, right that Team Italy was all
- 31:50Speaker 1: born in the United States.
- 31:51Speaker 2: I mean, what are we doing here? Come?
- 31:52Speaker 6: It's the whole thing's crazy now, I mean, that's well,
- 31:56Speaker 6: we see that in uh, we've seen that in the Olympics,
- 31:59Speaker 6: in basketball a little bit. I mean Joe he played
- 32:01Speaker 6: for Team USA the last Olympics, you know what I mean.
- 32:04Speaker 5: Like it's like kim.
- 32:06Speaker 6: Oaiswall played for the USA back in whatever it was
- 32:08Speaker 6: ninety six.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Like right, Right's it's weird.
- 32:12Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I guess there's a lot of really
- 32:15Speaker 6: good Italian baseball players.
- 32:16Speaker 5: Like I love baseball. I can. I wasn't a good hitter.
- 32:20Speaker 5: I wasn't a great hitter. I was an okay hitter.
- 32:22Speaker 6: I could bunt, though, so if they needed a bunner,
- 32:23Speaker 6: I'd gladly put on Italy's colors and go out there
- 32:27Speaker 6: and try to bunt against one of these guys.
- 32:29Speaker 2: You were great to get that guy from first a second.
- 32:31Speaker 6: Just just trying to lay one pay out and get
- 32:33Speaker 6: it over and feel like I did something.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Where are you on, Nick Sirianti and we'll get you
- 32:37Speaker 2: out of here in a second.
- 32:38Speaker 5: Oh, I mean, come on that guy again.
- 32:40Speaker 6: Like that's why Philadelphia's crazy, right, Like you look at
- 32:43Speaker 6: that record and you go everybody else in the country
- 32:47Speaker 6: is like, wait a second, you're winning ten, eleven, twelve,
- 32:51Speaker 6: thirteen games, but it's like everything's the biggest controversy.
- 32:54Speaker 5: In the world, right. I mean, that dude is just
- 32:56Speaker 5: a winner. He's found a way to win.
- 32:58Speaker 6: He's got that bravado out about him that that definitely
- 33:02Speaker 6: plays well in Philadelphia.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Just won the Super Bowl, right, like we're yea whatever the.
- 33:11Speaker 5: Like, and we're talking about like is his job? Like
- 33:14Speaker 5: come on, what are we doing? Right?
- 33:15Speaker 2: Yes?
- 33:16Speaker 5: What is crazy?
- 33:16Speaker 6: Because you know, being down in Richmond, I walked by
- 33:19Speaker 6: the TV and all the national media.
- 33:21Speaker 5: That's all they're talking about too, is like Eagles and what's.
- 33:25Speaker 6: What's the what's the problem. They're dysfunctional and like they
- 33:28Speaker 6: just won seven in a row.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Like that Sports Radio though, Man, I mean, that's it,
- 33:35Speaker 1: that's that's that's where we're at.
- 33:37Speaker 6: And they are certainly a lightning bolt for that. But now, Sirianni,
- 33:41Speaker 6: that dude, I think he's a great coach. He's doing
- 33:44Speaker 6: great things in Philadelphia. I hope you know, my my,
- 33:48Speaker 6: my brethren in the City of Brotherly Love understand, like
- 33:52Speaker 6: they did the same thing Andy Reid.
- 33:53Speaker 5: Like all that dude dude did was win. Like he's
- 33:55Speaker 5: a great coach.
- 33:56Speaker 6: He's one of the best, if not the best, all
- 33:57Speaker 6: the time, won a million games. And it was like, well,
- 34:01Speaker 6: he's you know not doesn't do this well, it doesn't
- 34:02Speaker 6: do that, Like come on, give me a break, Like
- 34:04Speaker 6: winning is winning?
- 34:05Speaker 2: Yes, tell her? You see where I'm going here.
- 34:08Speaker 1: So we had Ryan Howard on the other day, and
- 34:10Speaker 1: next time we have Ryan Howard booked.
- 34:12Speaker 2: I want you to in buy Philmore Telly Junior on
- 34:15Speaker 2: to help us conduct the interview and get that.
- 34:17Speaker 5: Would that be cool for you to you kidding?
- 34:18Speaker 6: That would be awesome. I'm I'm in touch. I was
- 34:22Speaker 6: just just texting back and forth. Tom mccarthur, who's the
- 34:24Speaker 6: Phillies played by Stuff? Tom did Saint Joe's stuff way back.
- 34:30Speaker 6: So we've known Tom forever. So he's where I get
- 34:33Speaker 6: my real inside stuff. I'm like, all right, are we
- 34:34Speaker 6: good right now?
- 34:35Speaker 5: Is everybody goody? Anything? Phillies related on men?
- 34:39Speaker 6: Like, I'm not gonna lie, Like, we're looking at the schedule,
- 34:43Speaker 6: my kids looking schedule, Like all right, so when we
- 34:45Speaker 6: have a little break like beginning of August, they're home
- 34:47Speaker 6: for a couple of games. Like what games can we
- 34:49Speaker 6: get to? I'm all in on that. I'm all in
- 34:52Speaker 6: on the Phils.
- 34:53Speaker 2: I love that.
- 34:54Speaker 1: I know you you're not here just to win one game.
- 34:56Speaker 1: You want to win the whole damn tournament. So how
- 34:58Speaker 1: do you protect your team? Like, what do you tell
- 34:59Speaker 1: you your team after the game? Hey, nice win, but
- 35:02Speaker 1: we did win a national championship last night. What's the
- 35:04Speaker 1: message to the team will be forward?
- 35:06Speaker 6: Yeah, We've been talking really down the stretch here about
- 35:09Speaker 6: focus and refocus, right like, focus on what do we
- 35:12Speaker 6: have coming up here? So through all these games, even
- 35:14Speaker 6: back to the middle of February, right like, focus on
- 35:17Speaker 6: what we need to do in this game, block out
- 35:19Speaker 6: all the extra noise, and then once those games were over,
- 35:21Speaker 6: it was refocused.
- 35:22Speaker 5: We did that with the.
- 35:23Speaker 6: Conference tournament, right we won, you know, we win in
- 35:27Speaker 6: the quarterfinals and we're walking through the hall, you know,
- 35:29Speaker 6: the you know, go to the locker room, and I'm
- 35:32Speaker 6: yelling to them up ahead, refocus, refocus, and then I
- 35:35Speaker 6: hear them saying it amongst themselves, right, And.
- 35:39Speaker 5: So it's really that.
- 35:39Speaker 2: So yes, just that, and.
- 35:42Speaker 6: We talk about numbers. So right now we're just talking
- 35:45Speaker 6: about number two. You know, how do we get number two?
- 35:48Speaker 6: You know, and just being ready with whatever it takes,
- 35:50Speaker 6: and you know, not getting caught up in you know,
- 35:53Speaker 6: all these people that want to tell you they love
- 35:54Speaker 6: you right now, the same people that, you know, if
- 35:56Speaker 6: you had lost last night, would be telling you how
- 35:58Speaker 6: much you suck, right like. So you know, we just
- 36:02Speaker 6: try to keep it consistent, keep it even, keep everything
- 36:05Speaker 6: as normal as possible.
- 36:07Speaker 5: I begged them, I begged them. I beg them.
- 36:09Speaker 6: I'm sure they didn't really listen, but I beg them, like,
- 36:11Speaker 6: put your phones down and go to sleep.
- 36:13Speaker 5: Last night, yeah, you know, and.
- 36:15Speaker 6: That's more of a do as I say, not as
- 36:16Speaker 6: I do, because I was not I.
- 36:19Speaker 5: Was not asleep. I was sitting on this computer watching film.
- 36:22Speaker 5: But that's my job. That's my role in this team.
- 36:26Speaker 2: To do that, you had to be on one.
- 36:27Speaker 5: Yes, their role is go get sleep. Hopefully they've done that.
- 36:31Speaker 2: So great.
- 36:32Speaker 1: You want to send Taylor some VCU gear so next time,
- 36:35Speaker 1: next time you come on. He doesn't have a Carolina
- 36:37Speaker 1: football outlet.
- 36:38Speaker 5: Our football team hasn't lost in like eighty years now.
- 36:41Speaker 5: We don't have a football team.
- 36:42Speaker 6: But we also don't have a Hall of Fame coach.
- 36:45Speaker 6: But yeah, if I can find a VCU helmet or something,
- 36:49Speaker 6: we'll send it. We'll send something.
- 36:50Speaker 2: Along anything you can find, Taylor. Is this it? Guys?
- 36:53Speaker 2: Are we done here? We're We're rooting for VCU the
- 36:55Speaker 2: rest of the way. This is our team, right. Oh yeah,
- 36:58Speaker 2: I'm a VCU guy. I mean, I don't care. Went
- 37:00Speaker 2: to Clark University, so speaking of Brian College.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Yes, the NBC's such a Northeast guy.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Hey man, we appreciate it. I'm happy for you. I'm
- 37:11Speaker 2: happy for the entire family.
- 37:12Speaker 1: It looked like they were just as excited, if not
- 37:15Speaker 1: more excited than you were because you still have work
- 37:17Speaker 1: to do. They were just excited that you got the
- 37:19Speaker 1: win last night. But congratulations to you, man. It's a
- 37:22Speaker 1: great story and good luck to you guys moving forward
- 37:25Speaker 1: here in the tournament.
- 37:25Speaker 5: Appreciate you guys. Thank you,
