- 1:26dollar Air dot com. Well, today we will actually give you a sneak
- 1:33peek of what's to come in two weeks as we present a lux radio theater
- 1:38adaptation of the Philip Marlow movie Murder My Suite. Murder My Suite was actually
- 1:46based on Farewell, My Lovely, the second Philip marlow book. The first
- 1:51for Philip marlow book, The Big Sleep, would later be adapted by Humphrey
- 1:56Bogart, and this was actually the second film adaptation of the plot of Farewell,
- 2:05My Lovely. The first was in The Falcon takes Over, starring George
- 2:09Sanders, famous for his role as the Saint. As well. Another Philip
- 2:15Marlowe's story was adapted into a Michael Shane film. This is the first movie
- 2:20to actually feature Philip Marlowe as the main character. Marlow first appeared in nineteen
- 2:25thirty nine and Sandler, who had for the past six years been writing pulp
- 2:32stories for Black Mask. Marlowe's adventures were often cannibalized from these previous stories featuring
- 2:40other characters, and three separate stories were the basis for Farewell, My Lovely,
- 2:46Try The Girl, Mandarin's Jade, and The Man who Liked Dogs.
- 2:51Marlow was in many ways the prototypical, hard boiled private eye. That night
- 2:57in Tarnished Armor, we had a very fixterior, but live by a code
- 3:02and navigated through an often grimy world. Barlow in the film and in this
- 3:07radio adaptation, was played by Dick Powell Poward really made his career as a
- 3:15bit of a song and dance and a great singer and crooner. But at
- 3:20forty he was ready to take on some serious dramatic roles to expand his repote
- 3:27or risk a pretty serious decline in his career. The film version of Murder
- 3:31My Suite set him on a path of some great dramatic roles in movies such
- 3:38as Cornered and Johnny o'clock, and over radio he was able to be one
- 3:43of the first, actually the first radio hard boiled eye in Rogues Gallery,
- 3:47a series we parlayed previously. And of course he would go on to play
- 3:53Richard Diamond, but it all really started here with Murder My Swite. Well,
- 3:58we'll talk more, and so in about an hour we'll be back.
- 4:01But let's go ahead and take a listen to the Lux Radio Theater adaptation of
- 4:06Murder My Suite from June eleventh of nineteen forty five. Let's present Hollywood a
- 4:28Lux radio open that it brings you Dick Powell, Claire, Trevor, June
- 4:31Duprey, and Mike Mazurki in Murder My Suite. Ladies and gentlemen, your
- 4:36guest producer mister Irving Pittell. Greetings from Hollywood ladies and gentlemen. In answer
- 4:50to the proverb that a leopard cannot change its spots, we bring you tonight,
- 4:54a gentleman who turns his back on many years of light and frothy rules
- 4:58by which he climbs to stardom and takes the part of a ruthless, hard
- 5:01as nails detective in a drama as relentless as the crimes that it unfolds.
- 5:08Is Dick Pawell. Hails so enthusiastically as Philip Marlowe in R. Chao's sensational
- 5:13success Murder. My Sweep co starred with him in her screen role as a
- 5:16fatal and mysterious Helen is Claire Trevor, also June Duprey, whose natural loveliness
- 5:23would lead us to expect a touch of romance in our play. And towering
- 5:27above our microphones is Mike Mazurki as a quietly alarming Moose Malloy. Four characters
- 5:32of widely different natures and conflicting motives involved in one of the streams most saffling
- 5:39and complex mysteries, a story that in its published form was one of the
- 5:42best selling thrillers of our time. Most of the action of Murder My Sweet
- 5:46takes place right here in Hollywood, not too far from our stage. If
- 5:50you saw the pictures, you've seen many Waywood sights, from Malibu Beach to
- 5:54sunset towers, from the skyline of Los Angeles to the canyons of our hills,
- 5:59landmarks as native to Hollywood as the radio and motion picture studios which these
- 6:02dramas come. In fact, the name Lux on the outside of our theater
- 6:08is, I venture to say, as familiar a landmark in this capital of
- 6:11entertainment, as Lux Soap itself is familiar in the dressing rooms of screen star
- 6:15stars, a standard of complexion care from coast to coast. Lux toilet soap
- 6:20is a friendly link between your home and Hollywood. And now we take you
- 6:26to the downtown section of our city. On the first act of Murder My
- 6:29Sweet, starring Dick Powell as Philip Marlowe, Claire Trevor as Helen, June
- 6:33Duprey as Anne, and Mike Mazurki as Moose MALOI, when you got something
- 6:46to say, start at the beginning. Okay, it's seven o'clock at night
- 6:50and I'm in a two by four cup. I call my office. I
- 6:54sat at my desk and look at the sign on the door. Hellup Marlowe,
- 6:58it says, hell up Marlowe, Private investigator. That's a nice title
- 7:01for somebody to go to see you when you don't want to see the law.
- 7:04I was tired out. I'd been not peaking under all Sunday sections for
- 7:09a barber named Dominic whose wife wanted him back. I forget why, anyway,
- 7:13I didn't find him. And the only reason I took the job is
- 7:15because my bank account was trying to call under a duck. I just found
- 7:18out all over again how big Los Angeles is. My brain felt like a
- 7:23plumber bankerchief. I took out my little black book and decided to go grass
- 7:27hunting. Nothing like soft shoulders to improve my morale. I'm dialing a number
- 7:32when the door opens and he walks in the mountain that walks like a man,
- 7:38the biggest mud I ever saw it on the side. You Marlowe.
- 7:42Eh, I've seen your name downstairs. They had the names that in the
- 7:46building. You're a private eye. Huh, that's right. I like you
- 7:49to look for somebody. I'm closed up how I looked for her where she
- 7:54worked. But I've been out of touch. I'm around the marrow. We'll
- 7:56talk about it. I think maybe we should do it now. That'd go
- 7:59on me a big eight. I don't mean to do nothing here. I
- 8:03give you some dough. You'll come with me, Okay, okay, I
- 8:07comment you. It ain't far. But the fay o c the l avenue.
- 8:11The place was called Florian's. It looked like trouble, but that didn't
- 8:15bother me. The two twenties, the big lug had dropped felt nice and
- 8:18snug against my appendix. I tried to figure out who he was looking for.
- 8:22I tried to picture him in love with somebody. It changed his place
- 8:28a lot. They used to be staged in some boots. Let us work
- 8:33in pink flowers. She was cute like a bug's eer, a redhead.
- 8:39Eight years since I've seen her, six years. She didn't write, but
- 8:41you have a reason, Yeah, yeah, she'd have a reason. What'd
- 8:46you do here, singer? Yeah, let's you and me nibble a couple.
- 8:48Hey, jack whiskey, Hey what hair again? He said, you're
- 8:54here again? Yeah? I come in before I try to find her.
- 8:58I love big coat. You want them? Sorry about your girl, but
- 9:01she ain't here. Her name is Delma. You never heard of Belma,
- 9:03mister plian. She used to work here. You better drink up you that
- 9:09lady up in the bar. Maybe she knows. I have to request you
- 9:13don't bother the customers. See, lady, you remember a girl used to
- 9:18work here. Her name was Belma. You know name? I said,
- 9:20leave the customers alone. So far you're ready? Reply it? Huh?
- 9:24I don't bother you none sorrow your trinket, Get out of here, Get
- 9:28on my way, Come on pole eight years. There is a lot of
- 9:33jin I don't know anything about Velma here. Some guys has the wrong idea.
- 9:37One of the things. The boss was no lightweight, but Mouse picked
- 9:41him up like a rag doll and drop him in the corner. Pocket Mouse
- 9:45seemed the little daze as he walked out, and I tagged asked him down
- 9:48the street. That guy in there, he should have talked to me like
- 9:50that? Or door Pale, what's the next shot? Who asked you to
- 9:54stick your face in? Remember me, I'm the detective. You're hired,
- 9:56Chunky. Your name is Moose cut on a milarge. Moose mulloy. That's
- 10:03place same like it used to be. Who used to be the thieves and
- 10:05some boots? You said that Maybe I told you too much? Maybe I
- 10:09leg go my arm. Huh? Who was to be married? Me and
- 10:13Delma? We figure I've been there eight years. I said about catching butterflies
- 10:18and quit not ben. Look you find doubble for me? Huh? She
- 10:22got her last name, Delma Valento. Now you beat it? Sure?
- 10:26How do I get in touch with you? I get in touch with you
- 10:30tomorrow maybe. So tomorrow comes and I'm thinking about Moose Molloy and that bucket,
- 10:39a mud look on the face of the Boston Florian's. When I hear
- 10:41footsteps coming my way down the hall, Moose was coming back. Except it
- 10:46wasn't Moose. It was another new customer, good looking guy, well dressed
- 10:52like a movie star. Tomorrow, my name is Marion. Come in,
- 10:56Come in. Who put in the pitch for me? Mister Marion? And
- 11:00no one, no one. I saw your name in the classified section of
- 11:03the probe bo. I'm going to clutch at the moment, mister Marion.
- 11:05No what I'm busy. I couldn't take on anything big. Have you got
- 11:09mine? I'd like your services tonight, if for just a few hours,
- 11:11I'm meeting some men I am paying them some money. How much money and
- 11:16what for? I can't go into that. I simply agree to service the
- 11:18bearer of the money. Oh, just want me to go along and hold
- 11:22your hand. I'm afraid I don't like your manager. I've had complaints before,
- 11:24but it keeps getting worse. How much you offering me for doing nothing?
- 11:28I haven't got around to thinking about it, And of course you could
- 11:31get around and thinking about it now. How would you like a swift punch
- 11:33on the nose? Oh, dear, I tremble at the thought of such
- 11:35violence. I'll give you one hundred dollars. If that isn't enough, fit
- 11:41enough. This is all I can tell you. Some jewels were taken from
- 11:45the print of mine in a hold up. I'm buying them back tonight.
- 11:46Where and to drive my car to a rather secuted canyon near Malibu? Uh
- 11:50huh. We'd drive out there to buy back some jewelry for a lady friend.
- 11:54I didn't say the pants are that. These men, whoever they are,
- 11:56don't tend roughing you up if you play ball, But they wouldn't like
- 12:00being twinned. One of us might get hurt. No, mister Marriott,
- 12:03I'm fraid I can't do anything for you, I see, but I'll take
- 12:07you a hundred bucks and tag along for the ride. One more thing.
- 12:09Yes, I carry the shopping money and I do the driving very well.
- 12:20We drove down that night. Somehow I knew we were being watched. I
- 12:22didn't see anything. The fog was a nice dish of pure Saint Germain.
- 12:28I felt it coming. I was a toad on a wet rock, and
- 12:31a snake was looking down my neck. So down, we're getting near the
- 12:37spot. Quiet. There should be some white posts along aboat, pull in
- 12:39your head back to the white post. As a pop, the path goes
- 12:43down into a hollow. That's where weird to wait. Hey, hey,
- 12:46look, white coat. All right, stop the car now, you said,
- 12:52Titan, I'll go down to have a look. See. Have you
- 12:54got a flashlight? There could be more than a couple of minutes. Nobody
- 13:05here, Marriott. This whole setup looks like a tryout seeing if you obey
- 13:09ordered, let's put around the corner. And I caught the black jack right
- 13:18behind my ear, and a black pool opened up at my feet. I
- 13:22dived in. It had no bottom, felt pretty good, just like an
- 13:28amputated leg. I don't know how much time went by off I got to
- 13:31look at my watch, but as I came to I started to call from
- 13:35Marion Marriot, Mariot. I was what happened? Who? Who are you?
- 13:41Oh? Hey, come back here, come back here? Hello Hello,
- 13:54Let me talk to Randall, Inspector Randall. Randall is Marlow. Wow.
- 14:01Oh yeah, yeah. Look I'm at a gas station down there in
- 14:03Malibu, the foot of Woodbridge. You better get on here. A guy
- 14:07named Marriott has just been knocked off beating the death with a black jack.
- 14:16Randall. I told you a dozen times what happened. I'd like you to
- 14:20tell me again here in my big comfortable laws. Who killed Marriott? An
- 14:22amateur killed him? Or somebody who wanted it to look like an amateur.
- 14:26Nobody else would hit a man that many times with a Saturday oftening. You
- 14:30go over it to till the earth sound. I'd soon a t eight shows
- 14:33out of a garbage can of information? How to go? Oh, I
- 14:35get it. You don't like me, okay, I'll go home right after
- 14:39you start talking sense? For instance, For instance, you don't know anything
- 14:43about Marriott. You don't know how much money you were carrying. You don't
- 14:46know what it was supposed to buy back trusting, So it was now,
- 14:50where's the dough where? Well, right after I beat out Marriott's brains,
- 14:54and just before I hit myself on the top of the head, I hid
- 14:56the money under a bush, and that day me a crameer saw that.
- 15:01You must have thought I was somebody else. You took one look and got
- 15:03out fast. Suppose a duel outfit got the bright idea of using a private
- 15:07dick for contact and payoff. Oh great, great, Now I'm a finger
- 15:11for a heist mob. Look, I'm trying to be helpful. I get
- 15:15up off the nice cold ground. I don't use the car because Marriot's still
- 15:18in it. I want five miles just so you can be the first to
- 15:20hear the news. I wait for you at the beach and lead just straight
- 15:24to the body, so you won't have to wait till next Christmas to find
- 15:26it. I'll tell you all. I know. It sounds gray, it
- 15:28is scray, but it's all I know. Now I'm part of your bum
- 15:31guesses. Either book me and let me go home. Well, you split
- 15:35your own throat for six bits plus pedro tax. Now, look grandall,
- 15:39go on home and keep your big yap shot. One pony move and you'll
- 15:43be locked up as a material witness. Whoever killing Mariott, I'll get him.
- 15:46Yeah, you'll get him about the time you get your third set at
- 15:50ten. And to stay away from Marriott's pals. I've been after those boys
- 15:52for a long time and I'm getting clothed. So watch your stiffer. I
- 15:54may have to pick you up in the same basket with Jud's antar. Yeah,
- 16:00Vampa are mixed up in this Oh so you know, Amsar. I
- 16:02know lots of people in this town, but I never heard a few of
- 16:04answer that. Yes, inspective. Good night, Randle, and keep away
- 16:07from the newspapers. I'll do the talking well. I went back to my
- 16:17office the next day. I didn't want to be there because my head felt
- 16:19like a mestera ribbits. One of my clients was dead, but the other
- 16:22one was still alive, moved from Alois. I figured he might be looking
- 16:26for me. Early in the afternoon, this kid walks in and this is
- 16:33getting better better. My name is Dan Alison's Tomorrow. I'm a reporter from
- 16:38the person, Oh, I have a seat thousand. This hadn't been very
- 16:41helpful on the Marriott murder. I was wondering. There's a question I always
- 16:45asked, how did you know about me? Oh friends city Hall? Tell
- 16:51me? Did Mary tell you who're on the jad? He find there?
- 16:53No? No, he didn't, hedging on him wrong, married a couple
- 16:59of weeks by Well. I just wanted if you had any theories about what
- 17:03happened or what was supposed to happen, or got a couple. This is
- 17:07a nice looking curse. Just what you mean by opinion? I like to
- 17:11prove another theory that you're not a reporter. Why did dames carry so much
- 17:15stuff in a pocket book? Give it to me. I was looking for
- 17:17a driver's license with your bank book, will do? And the name on
- 17:19this bank book isn't Allison at all. It's Grail and Grail. Oh,
- 17:23you're a hot rock baby. I could talk to you to the cop last
- 17:27night. All I could tell him was that Marriott was buying back some jewelry.
- 17:30Who could knock their hats off of that line about the jade? Tell
- 17:33me, missus Grail, if you ever known a girl in Velma volentoist finger
- 17:37I never heard of in my life. Oh, I was just shotman does
- 17:38besides another case? I just hoping, who's that jade belonged to? What's
- 17:44your interest in me? My interest? Marriott gave me a hundred bucks to
- 17:48take care of him, and I didn't. I'm just a small businessman in
- 17:51a very messy business, but I like to follow through on a sale.
- 17:53The j belonged to my father, oh, I gather it from Marriott.
- 17:57If the jade belonged to a lady my father happened to be married. Oh
- 18:02oh, your mother was wearing it the night of the whole up. It
- 18:04is not my mother, my mother's jerry. I taw them married again.
- 18:07Who sent you here to feel me out? My undy s your name in
- 18:12the newspaper before I talked to Inspector Randall. I think I'll have a talk
- 18:15with your father and your father's wife, except that I'm expecting to hear from
- 18:22somebody. Well that's casing. In that case, I'll go away just the
- 18:26same. You're really a lot cuter than moves mylan someone as well. Before
- 18:40the Towel and the co stars returned with the second act of murder, my
- 18:42sweet we take you to where there's a local war bond rally going on,
- 18:47and this is white. It is curious about one of her fellow workers,
- 18:49Jeanie. Stop here a minute. Will you tell me who's got a chalky
- 18:52woman in charge of the next book? Oh? That missus. Jenny's lovely
- 18:56looking a daughter is a class made of my college. Oh god, gee,
- 19:02don't tell me she's old enough to have a twenty year old daughter.
- 19:04Force. It looks like a girl herself. It has skin. I think
- 19:07I've never seen her when a complexion didn't look like that, so saw and
- 19:11really stress. Well, that's what a lovely lux complexion does for a woman,
- 19:17makes her look radiant of feeling. It's what you notice first about her
- 19:21appearance, that smooth, soft lux complexion. Screen stars know how very important
- 19:26it is to have the charm of exquisite skin. That's why they're so careful
- 19:29never to take chances with complex and guty. Here's what a famous star I
- 19:33called that. Colbert says, I never neglect my daily active ladder facials with
- 19:37Luck soap. They're so easy and they work. Here's what I do.
- 19:41I cover my face generously with the creamy ladders, work it in the pyramids.
- 19:45I rinse with warm water, then cold, and pat my face dry
- 19:49with a towel. Now my skin feels smooth, softest. And it is
- 19:55these facials the screen stars depend on really do make skin lovelier. Tests showed
- 20:00actually three out of four complexions improved in a short time with daily luck toilet
- 20:04soap care. Why don't you try? You'll enjoy the extra creamy ladder,
- 20:08the gentle caressing way it touches your skin. Nine out of ten famous screen
- 20:14stars use fine white luck toilet soap. Why don't you begin your daily facials
- 20:18with Hollywood Beauty soap Tomorrow? Herving Pittel brings our stars back for the second
- 20:23act with Dick Parlot, Claire Trevor as Helen, jun du Pray as Ann
- 20:30and Mike Mazurki as Moose Malloy. We raised the curtain on act two of
- 20:33Murder. My Sweet Philip Marlowe continues with his story this girl, this Anne
- 20:45Grail. He drove me to her father's place in Breadworth, a cozy eight
- 20:48or nine acres okay for the average family. Only you need accomplice to go
- 20:52to the mailbox house. Was all right? Too, but it was as
- 20:56big as Buckingham Palace. I waited while she saw me to the old folk,
- 21:00it was like waiting to buy a crypt in a mascoleum. And then
- 21:03she called me in. Old man Grail looked like a college professor. And
- 21:07the old lady what an old lady? Blonde, gorgeous, and I guess
- 21:14about thirty, with a face and the shape that had make most pin up
- 21:17girls look like gravel gerty. She had dimples on her knees, and I
- 21:22was admiring them when the old man started to talk. Do you know anything
- 21:26about jade, Miss Tomorrow? It's uh green, isn't it? The jade
- 21:30stolen from my wife was in next to sixty beds of about six terres each,
- 21:33and very valuable, Miss Snarlo. And there, why don't you sit
- 21:37down? Oh how valuable? Somewhat larger Necklustreetion told brow for one hundred and
- 21:42twenty five thousand dollars I never should have worn as it was stupid inexcusable.
- 21:48Where was the stick up? If you'd excuse me, I'm going to lie
- 21:49down, missus. Gray will talk to you, and most anxious to locate
- 21:53my jade, Miss Tomorrow, I can only hope it can be managed without
- 21:56any publicity. Wait a minute, I'll go with you. May I make
- 22:00you a drink? Mister Marlow? Thanks? I hadn't thought there were enough
- 22:06murders these days to make detecting very attractive to young men. And I stir
- 22:10up trouble on the side. Tell me how much of your money was in
- 22:14Marriot's envelope? Eight thousand dollars? We assume they never guess it will value.
- 22:21Who knew you were going to wear the nexus that night? My maid?
- 22:23Perhaps? Would I trust her implicitly? Why? Because I trust some
- 22:27people? I trust you? Did you trust Tom Marriot in something you're not
- 22:34drinking? Mister Marlow? I thought the testings were heavy drinker and some detectives
- 22:38does encourage other people to think? Shall I tell you about the whole that
- 22:42it might help? Well? I've been out dancing and Tom was bringing me
- 22:47home. Where do you stopped on near here? Does it matter a lot?
- 22:49Oh? Not too much at the moment, knowne how many other guys
- 22:52take you out dancing? I'm very fond of my husband, only his two
- 22:56steps getting a little stiff as grail, you know, Jules Anther. I've
- 23:02heard Tom speak of him. Why No, I don't know. The cops
- 23:03told me to leave Amthor alone. Is he a bad boy? A lot
- 23:07of Tom's friends are. I'm afraid Tom was rather a heel himself, but
- 23:11a nice heel. You don't know how horrible I feel. Why? Why?
- 23:18Because I'm responsible? I asked Tom to try to buy the necklace back.
- 23:23Oh, I just can't understand the whole business. All they took is
- 23:27a necklace. I was wearing a ring too, but they didn't want to
- 23:30ring about Jules Anther. What's his racket? No, he's sort of a
- 23:34psychic consultant. I think he's a quack. Tom went to him because he
- 23:40was all mixed up. He couldn't get started for fear of failure. I
- 23:45wonder if he'd take my case. That sounded like the dog clothing it was
- 23:51AND's been standing there. Oh, strange child. Mister Marlow, you will
- 23:56help me, won't you? Why? Because you like me? Are you
- 23:59paying me something in money? Well, I've never hired a detective before,
- 24:02all of the rates as much as a traffical bear. How do I find
- 24:04ample? Well, he's really quite inaccessible. Yes, Well show him in
- 24:17well don't look so smug. He really is inaccessible. I didn't have the
- 24:22faintest idea becoming mister Morrow. How do you spend your evenings? I'm in
- 24:26the phone book. Oh, come in, mister Ample. Mister Marlow is
- 24:32a private detective who was with Tom when when it happened. Oh, I
- 24:37was hired as a bodyguard and bungled the job. Now it's myself. I'm
- 24:41investigating. None of these things are so difficult to believe. What could have
- 24:44happened? I've got a couple of notions. Would you like to help me
- 24:45work? I'm on. Oh, I'm afraid I wouldn't make a good detective,
- 24:49mister mollow and I'm yeah, I know, I know you're inaccessible.
- 24:52The police told me to keep away from you. You look harmless to me.
- 24:56I'll be very glad to arrange an interview. Just leave your number with
- 24:59the it's great. Don't go to any special trouble. I'll bring my own
- 25:02crystal ball. Hey, how do you get out of the fun? I
- 25:11was home that night trying to add things up. Moose the law, marry
- 25:15it, tell them the beautiful blonde and Jules Ampar. I put it all
- 25:19together and just thumbed its nose at me. I decided to go down to
- 25:22Floyen's Cafe and split an infinitive when the boss when the buzzer changed my plans.
- 25:27I had a visitor. I just stopped in because I thought you'd be
- 25:32interested in what Amthor had to say. Oh, and here, shall we
- 25:37call this a retainer? Yeah, let's call it a retainer, mister Marlowe.
- 25:42Does the police know about me? Will I value? Well? My
- 25:45husband has a morbid fear of publicity, and it is not at all well.
- 25:48I'll manage it now about Anthon, please, I don't like being rushed.
- 25:55I was hoping we could go out somewhere. You like the Coconut Beach
- 25:57Club. I've never been there. The type the lights there are very flattering.
- 26:06They'd even mellow you a little, I think. But it's the sort
- 26:08of a place where you're expected to wear shoes and it's hot. I'll be
- 26:12right with it. We went to the Coconut Beast Club. We had a
- 26:18table in the corner. She gave me that dreamish smile and started out,
- 26:23you know, you've got a nice build for a private detective. Oh it
- 26:29gets me, ron part does one get to be a private detective. You
- 26:33don't mind my sizing you up a little? For most of us, the
- 26:36rex cops I worked for the district attorney got canned, surely, not for
- 26:38inconfidence, for talking back. I had an interesting childhood too, But you
- 26:45didn't drop in on me to get a biography. You'd rather I talked about
- 26:48Anthor. That's right, A good guest. Well, then stay right here.
- 26:52I've got a powder my nose and I'll tell you more. We'll just
- 26:55be back before I get stuck with a check Molla. I'd like to talk
- 27:03to you. Well, hello, missus Gail, I'd like to talk to
- 27:07you too, but not now. Do the Grails always hold their family reunions?
- 27:11Here? One take long that I have to say. Look, honey,
- 27:14I've already got a date. She'd be right back, and I don't
- 27:17want you to slugging it out in public. There's no dangerous that she went,
- 27:19do you know? Never mind, what did Helen ask you to do?
- 27:23She wanted me to kiss her and find her jade necklace. I may
- 27:27have the order wrong, but that's the general idea. Well, whatever she
- 27:32was willing to pay you, i'll pay you more. Just stay away from
- 27:34her. Why do you look at me like that? I don't know.
- 27:41I seem to remember you from one of my better dreams. You know if
- 27:45I no, what are you looking at? I'll be right back. Hello,
- 27:55mister malloy. Do you like this place better than Florence? That's the
- 27:59baby? Got something for you to do? Look, look, I'm a
- 28:02big boy now. Don't you want me to have any fun at all?
- 28:03I want you should meet a guy? Well, you left gory another ten
- 28:07seconds and gang Green was set in these fingers. Thanks, okay, I'll
- 28:12ditch the baby. I couldn't ditch the babe. The babe at ditched me
- 28:25first. Helen that disappeared no inn and had left the card on the table
- 28:29if you'd written on it, I'll keep the offer open. I don't live
- 28:33in Brentwood. My address is nine to six y two North Hoover Street.
- 28:36Bo saw me put the card in my pocket. He came over and hustled
- 28:40me out to the curb. There was a car waiting, also a guy
- 28:42to drive the car. He took us to a very ritchy appacment house,
- 28:45showed us up to the ten house, and then did something that made me
- 28:51You carry a gun tally. Oh, I'm so used to packing when I
- 28:53hardly notices on me, I think maybe I better hold it. Stop the
- 28:56stalling, Let's get inside. He was there, right, miss Ant Me
- 29:03and Moose got him. Thank you, Michael, mister amptor, I like
- 29:07to you have to ask him about Delma help the impatient. You and Michael
- 29:10wait in the other room, but you ask him quick. I want to
- 29:14know now, well, now where did you pick up Moose mulloy. We
- 29:18he met it, Missus Grayles, you said you wanted an interview. H
- 29:22I must insist upon some sort of logical progression. We'll come to Moose Malloy
- 29:26later. As for my profession, my patients forgotten me highly as a psychic
- 29:30consultant Tomorlow years ahead of my time, which might be one way of saying
- 29:36that some folks have made some complaints to the cops. It might be do
- 29:40you have another theory about me? Yeah? Yeah, I do, And
- 29:41it goes like this, Now, you had blackmail rich women, but somebody
- 29:45else found a woman for him. Well, if you're right, I would
- 29:49be that somebody and I would have Missus Grail Jncklace, wouldn't I unless something
- 29:53went wrong like Marriott losing his nerve and ringing in a private dick. A
- 29:57socker would risk his neck for a sea note. But who might figure a
- 30:00jade New Chris would be a nice thing to have in his bank? And
- 30:03would this hypothetical detective be willing to part with it? Or a consideration could
- 30:07be if he had it? How much of a consideration, Well, it's
- 30:11difficult to say until he produces the jade. He might be bluffing trying to
- 30:15gain information, in which case a great psychic of years ahead of his time
- 30:22might try to beat the truth out of him. You wouldn't suggest it only
- 30:25if you wanted to wear your face backward for a while. No, no,
- 30:29there's no need for us to beat each other's throats, mister Tomorrow,
- 30:32and there's really no need for substitute. Putting it on the simplest and friendliest
- 30:36terms, I want that jade. I suppose I don't have it. I
- 30:40suppose I don't want to settle. Got him to tell you yet, No,
- 30:44molloy, I asked him where Velma is. He refuses to tell me.
- 30:48Now, wait a minute, I don't like you start telling me where
- 30:51you got Dama. Well, if AM thought told you I don't want Valma
- 30:52Volanas. He's nuts. He just picked you up to do his dirty work.
- 30:56I gave you some total finer or keep your shirt on the stopde me
- 31:00around, lying malloy, he knows where you got her. I haven't got
- 31:03a you damn with. You shouldn't have done that. You shouldn't have hit
- 31:08me. All right now, the two of you stay just where you are.
- 31:11What do you got to pull a gun for? Where's that necklace?
- 31:14Marlow? You can tell me. I can stop Moose. I don't know
- 31:18very well Moose. He's yours. Make him talk, So Moose went to
- 31:22work. Those fingers went around my throat tighter and tighter. That black pool
- 31:27opened up at my feet again, and I dived in the rest of it
- 31:30was a crazy, cold cut dream. I was going somewhere I've never been
- 31:36there before. I was drug somebody had told me. I was laying to
- 31:41Poppy. Somebody any hell small, small rooms or small I don't think you
- 32:10want to blow it away and you have to buy at a small I don't
- 32:21see I think the guys you think your Oh. Then I knew I couldn't
- 32:35go to sleep, not if I wanted to stay alive. I could still
- 32:38see those fingers on my throat. I even saw them. There's a bunch
- 32:42of bananas that look like figures. I wonder why I was full of something
- 32:45to keep me quieter with that dope to might me talk maybe both Okay,
- 32:52Malo, I said to myself, you're a tough guy. You've been sapped,
- 32:54choked and shot me on, so you're crazy a couple of walls and
- 32:58nice, but you got to get up and start moving. Let's see you
- 33:00do something really tough, like putting on your pants. Well I made it,
- 33:09okay you pooh pooh, your pants are on a walk that's tall,
- 33:14anything, everything just tall. Keep walking you getting out of here? Whah.
- 33:22I walked. I don't know how long. That kind of time.
- 33:24They don't make a watch. And then the smoke went away. The room
- 33:29turned into a room, and I knew I was ready to talk to somebody.
- 33:31I poured the bed of parts and got a hunk of bedspring, and
- 33:35then I started a shot again. Help help Mike walked in again, and
- 33:43I let him have it. Oh that was a nice feeling. I crept
- 33:46down the stairs. There was a man in an office, a doctor's office.
- 33:51It looked like I was in front of him before he saw me,
- 33:52but his hand went for the buzzer right away. That buzzer won't buy anything
- 33:58tonight, Doc, I just gave Nursey a sleeping tablet. But three days
- 34:01so you have been a very sick man. Three days. You're swaying right
- 34:06now, don't you realize that? I'm all sure, Doc, Now,
- 34:10what were you saying or remark? I thought I heard you saying that you
- 34:14had a gun on that death. If you were very careful, you could
- 34:16sneak it off. I'm very stupid thing to do, mister Morrow. The
- 34:22gun better nah, talk to more. You've been suffering from narcotic poising on
- 34:27account you pop me full of its pick up doctor Jack. I'm in a
- 34:30while more tonight. I haven't shot a man in a week. You have
- 34:32very nearly died. I had to give you Disney talents. Also a little
- 34:36something to make me talk. What was I supposed to talk about? Maybe
- 34:39a jade necklace I haven't got, mister am I'll be disappointed to you again.
- 34:45Never disappoint mister ampl Doc the depressed. I'm warning you mist tomorrow.
- 34:51At any moment, you're to last. I must think, kid, and
- 34:54you're going back to faith. Get away from me. That guy, please,
- 34:59he that gun. You're going to faint mid Comado. Maybe you're right,
- 35:05Maybe you're right, but not on this carpet. I'll do my polley
- 35:07on a nice heart. You never eat little bit before I try, I'm
- 35:09gonna rip something off. No, not your head, just a telephone.
- 35:17Hold on God, I'll look you up and I get in tom here.
- 35:24I staggered out of the street and down to the corner. Then I thought
- 35:28I was seeing things again. Yeah, there he was mouth bloy. I
- 35:32couldn't have knocked the ashes off a cigarette. But I tried to swing on
- 35:35him. He just held me up and started back. You should not to
- 35:38fight with me. You ain't such good shape. I'll murder you. I
- 35:44don't like to fight with nobody. I want for you to keep looking for
- 35:46Zoma. Who planted you here? Ampor Amtor tells me about you. But
- 35:52he was kidding all the time. He was kidding the pants off your buster.
- 35:54He doesn't want you to find your girl. Nobody's supposed to find a
- 35:58Velma. He's got other plans. You ain't. That's good. See,
- 36:01I better help you then get me a cab, your dopey gorilla. Where
- 36:05you want to go? What's that card you got? It says nine to
- 36:08six two North Hoover Street on the card. You saw me pick up this
- 36:12card in the Coconut Beast Club. That's where the babe live. Huh yeah,
- 36:15I think I'll find out why she's living alone, and then she really
- 36:17likes it. Now get me a cab. You're doing here? What do
- 36:31you want? Black coffee? Israel, eggs, the Scotch and soda.
- 36:36You're drunk. You better get out before Hey, this is a nice place.
- 36:40Here is the room for you in the Brentwood Polace or don't you like
- 36:44it out there? Why don't you come here because the cops may be looking
- 36:46for me and I'm not ready to talk. You're not drunk. Why do
- 36:50you look the way you do? Yeah, asked the second missus Rael.
- 36:52He picks up a blind date for me with Jules Lampthor and a cup of
- 36:55his slipping boy. What happened? Are you all right? I don't think
- 37:00I'm supposed to be alive and say that again? They won again? The
- 37:05last thing he said, I said, what happened? Now you all right?
- 37:08Miss grayl What were you doing out there in the canyon the night Marriott
- 37:13was killed. I was lying on my face when somebody threw a flashlight and
- 37:15asked me if I was all right, And then she said, what happened?
- 37:19Yeah, a girl with red hair and a crooked nose and a nice
- 37:22figure. Yes, a girl named Anne Gray. I didn't kill Marius.
- 37:27You were out there just taking a hike. I didn't kill him. I'd
- 37:29say you overheard Marriott, your stepmother, make it some sort of arrangements about
- 37:31the jade. If you knew Marriott had been holding hands with and you didn't
- 37:35like that. I hate her, and you hated him too. You hated
- 37:37anybody that had anything to do with Helen, so you bumped him off.
- 37:40You killed Tom Marriott. I didn't. I didn't do it. I didn't.
- 37:55We paused now for station identification. This is CBS, they call him.

- 40:34Morrow, Claire Trevor as Helen, June To Pray as Anne, and Mike
- 40:37Mazurki as Moose Malloy. Philip Morrow is in the apartment of Andreil, whom
- 40:42he has just accused of murder. I stood there in Andrea's apartment and the
- 40:53accused are of killing Marriott. I was sure she hadn't done it, but
- 40:57I had to find out one. I look just what you're thinking. If
- 41:01I didn't kill him, my father did, and if you did, you'd
- 41:05do anything to protect you. No. No, he couldn't do such a
- 41:07thing. I don't buy it either yet. I I was just trying it
- 41:10off your size. Won't you please go home? I'm it's taking a day.
- 41:15I can't go home. It's a very stubborn character named Inspector Randall.
- 41:20And if he has done my doorstep right and now waiting to pick me up,
- 41:22then two of its stooge desire don't relax it Hey, good day?
- 41:27Probably wait telling you decided that all quite at supper with me? Yeah,
- 41:32my name is Randall. I'd like to work with your boyfriend. Oh.
- 41:36I was just talking about you, and I've been looking for you for three
- 41:38days. Pull up a chair, Miss grayl was about to fix some soft
- 41:42boiled eggs and Scott she wouldn't join us. The last time I saw you,
- 41:45I gave you some good advice. I guess it didn't take her.
- 41:47I didn't bother Ramptor. I was going to, but he didn't get around
- 41:50to it. He got to me and given me quite a party. How
- 41:53did it go? Wanted to buy me? This is straight randall. You'd
- 41:58like to get Amthor, and I'd like to help you. He annoyed me
- 42:00a little. I'm listening. Well, Amthor is a tough turkey. Work's
- 42:04some kind of blackmail routine on dames who come to him with problems. I
- 42:07think Marriott was his contact man. Let's get to the new part. Huh.
- 42:10The jewelry Marriott was after was a jade neckriss that belonged to one of
- 42:14Amthwarp's patients. Well, Marriott pumbled the ball. Yeah, so Amthorp figured
- 42:19I had it. He sent me to a little rest home where the teacher
- 42:22talked. There's a guy there who's a whiz with a hypo. The address
- 42:25is twenty third Disconso okay, okay, who owns a jade? I told
- 42:30you one of Amphlar's patients by the name of h I don't know. Well,
- 42:36miss Braile, Yes, when were you last your father's praise in Brentwood
- 42:39not for several days. Is something wrong? It gip it? Well,
- 42:45I figure what you told me is on the level. But don't make a
- 42:46habit of trying to help me. I might get grateful and lock you up.
- 42:51Eh, give me a call them all. How could he know about
- 42:54me? I know that's what happens when you let a cop go to school.
- 42:58He gets smart. Now picks up your face. We got to get
- 43:02out of the marble quirk where brent Wood. Oh, what's the matter?
- 43:07Oh, it's a funny thing about every third day I get hungry. I
- 43:10can take thag some coffee if you want to. Wait, No, you're
- 43:15crazy. Everybody takes a poke at you. I will feeling full of drugs,
- 43:21which you bounce right back and up between tackle and then all over again.
- 43:23And I don't think you even know which team you're on. I don't
- 43:27know which team anybody's on. I don't even know who's playing today. At
- 43:35brent Wood, we saw mister grayle and I've seen healthier looking Jens in the
- 43:38County Morgue. His face was gray with worry. Something was eating him more
- 43:44important than a missing jade necklace, a missing a wife. Yesterday, I
- 43:49haven't heard from his teas and have you seen her? Have you no,
- 43:52David? Maybe maybe she went to the beach house. Beach house. It
- 43:55had been rented too many. It seemed to lead through the bank. I
- 43:58think I'd better have a look at it. This whole thing has gone too
- 44:00far. Oh or maybe it's coming too close to home. Mister Greyle.
- 44:05I don't say you killed Mary, but you could have for a good old
- 44:07fashioned motive. I did not kill him, mister Morrow, but I say
- 44:12it is better that he is dead. I'm not concerned if the police is
- 44:15pick me. I'm concerned about my wife. I'm losing her, and that
- 44:20is why I say all this has got to stop. You'll drop the case,
- 44:24mister Morrow. I'll say you will. Oh fine. I get dragged
- 44:28in, get money shoved at me, I get pushed out, get money
- 44:30shoved at me. Everybody pushes me, and everybody pushes me up. Nobody
- 44:32wants me to do anything. Okay, skip it. I'll put a check
- 44:37in the well. I cost a lot to do nothing. I get restless,
- 44:40throw on a trip to Mexico. Father will stay here. Why because
- 44:46I want to keep it a beach house. You just told him I can't
- 44:50stop now. But the cops stopped as Helen stopped. You stop? What
- 44:52do you mean does Helen stop? Oh? I don't know. If I
- 44:55always do what I meant to be a genius your dish, you get some
- 45:00horrible satisfaction seeing people torn apast you're hanging on her. Something's going to smack
- 45:06you hard. If I stick, it smacks you sooner, sooner, cleaner.
- 45:09Maybe that's why I'm sticking. But I'd stick anyway because a guy who
- 45:14hired me got killed. I'll get you to see. We went to the
- 45:22beach house. Things happen there, some of them. I can explain one
- 45:25thing I can't. After we took a look around, and and I were
- 45:30standing there in the dark, looking out that big front winder toward the ocean,
- 45:34and before I knew it, we ran a clench. It's nice to
- 45:38kiss a girl like Arael. I told her she had a cute little face,
- 45:43even if her nose was yes, perfectly, there's a bump on it
- 45:47right, I head with the basebool is to pay a short time. Yeah,
- 45:53what about my father? If we don't find I'm going to make you
- 45:57mad now, baby, But here goes your father? Really loves Helen.
- 46:01When I came along, you were afraid you might turn me into another marriage,
- 46:06so you tried to buy me off. That didn't work, and I
- 46:07began to suspect your father, a real tough guesser, might say that.
- 46:12When he couldn't buy me off either, you decided to be nice to me,
- 46:15Like just now. There's nothing decent about you? Is there? Nothing
- 46:21at all? I don't always guess right. I may be wrong. I
- 46:24think I am wrong. Sometimes I hate all men, young men, handsome
- 46:30men who don't work for a living, and almost keels who are private detectives.
- 46:35Helen. Oh, I'm ted, darling. But you should know by
- 46:39now that men play roughs. They thought, and you were up, and
- 46:43then they felt to one. Hello, mister Marlow. Hi, I didn't
- 46:49finish, Helen. I hate a lot of women, too, especially beautiful
- 46:52extensive clode all bubble bas and moonlight and inside cold and hard I brew steel.
- 47:00Probably not that clean. Your slip is showing, Darling. I'm leaving.
- 47:06I'll tell father you're here. Oh how long have you been here?
- 47:09Missus Grail? Yesterday you just happened to leave the Brentwood place before the cops
- 47:15dropped on and your husband. Oh please, look, you hired me to
- 47:16get your necklace. So you stand me up at a corner. You rum
- 47:19joint to tell Anthor I'm sorry. I thought you might have had the jade.
- 47:23Please please don't blame me. You could have had it. What Ansel
- 47:29did it almost made me mad. Now just what goes between you too?
- 47:37Well, he's breathnailing me that much. Even I can figure out my husband
- 47:40is in love with me. I'm I'm fond of and I'm grateful, but
- 47:45I find other men very attressive. I imagine they meet you halfway. I
- 47:51met Ansell through Tom Marriott. He's smart, he does know psychology. You
- 47:55got me talking, and of course I talked too much. He uncovered something
- 47:59in the black kneeling started. I think if my husband had found out,
- 48:02it would have killed him. So you agreed to give Antli the necross,
- 48:06but before I could it was stolen by Maria. Answer probably came to the
- 48:10same conclusion. He decided to kill him, and that's why Marriot wanted you
- 48:14for protection. All right, I'll buy it up to there. What happened
- 48:19now? I want you to help me kill Jule's answer, don't just see
- 48:24You're the only one I can turn to. It's the only way I'll ever
- 48:28have peace. He'll never be satisfied even if he does get the jade.
- 48:31Why me because I have a gun? It just because I wear a pant?
- 48:35Help? But please you, I need help and peace. Despitely,
- 48:44I need you. I haven't got anything worked out. Yes, Ansel has
- 48:50disappeared. Maybe I can find him well and tell him you've got the jade
- 48:53you're ready to sell? Then? What that's my thought? All right,
- 48:58I'll think it might. How are your yo wonderful? How would you like
- 49:04not having a living? Wouldn't bother me a bit? When will you be
- 49:09back? I may have a time finding him. Maybe not to tomorrow night.
- 49:14Oh would you mind kissing me goodbye? No? I wouldn't mind at
- 49:19all. I went straight to Amthori's a pipelind. I had a couple of
- 49:28keys, and one of them fitted the back door. I wanted to surprise
- 49:30Amthorp. I thought he would give him a bang. I thought he would
- 49:34kill him. Am Thora was on the living room floor. He wasn't must
- 49:38just snapped the way a pretty girl would snap a stock of salary. Only
- 49:42for this job, you'd have to be a big man with a big pair
- 49:45of hands. I hustled downtown, bought a late edition. I wanted to
- 49:47see how the police were doing on the Marriott murder. And while I was
- 49:52looking at the paper, somebody was looking at me. I've been trying to
- 49:54find you all over. I got to go away. Yeah, yeah,
- 49:59Amthor's I know you didn't mean to kill him. You just shook him too
- 50:01hard because you wouldn't tell you Where about me? Is you find her?
- 50:06Yeah? Moose, I find it? Where is she said? The John
- 50:09go off on her? I wouldn't want a little dumbo to do no stretch
- 50:13me, lose timey loose and stop watching me around. If the John's got
- 50:15dumba, Oh body's got her, she's got herself. You can see her
- 50:20tomorrow. Okay, I'll go hide yourself and be a tomorrow night. Moose
- 50:30showed up tonight like I told him. I saw him on waiting outside the
- 50:32beach house until I called him. That was like lighting a stick of dynamite
- 50:37and telling him not to go off. But I had a plan. Tell
- 50:40him he was waiting, Philip, did you find them? Did you find
- 50:45them? You'll be here around twelve. Would you like to look at this?
- 50:50This is it, Philip, the necklace? Where'd you get it?
- 50:52I went to Brentwood today, got it out of my dressing table, Dora,
- 50:57surprise you, No, Fobery guess did so? It was never stolen.
- 51:01You fake the whole thing. I simply wasn't going to let Ampor get
- 51:05it. When he comes, he can take a look at it. He
- 51:08may have a gun. You'll never get that far. So you went to
- 51:13Brentwood. Then where's Ann and your father? I can't say it were out?
- 51:17And now I'm going to be very grateful. Here the necklace, it's
- 51:22yours. You are much too nice to be a grubby detective all your life.
- 51:27You told Marriott this thing had been stolen. Why? Oh he was
- 51:30close to Anthor. They both had to think it was stolen. Marriott felt
- 51:34of that, of course. And you still think Amplor killed him? Who
- 51:37else you? Oh? No, no, you can't mean yes. I
- 51:44think Marriott was scared because he'd agreed to help you kill and knows the detective,
- 51:47the same detective Moose took to Florian the joint, the one Floryan told
- 51:51Marriott about. Marriott had to help you protect his interest you knew that you're
- 51:54a living to him at the Anthor, and in his modest way to Florian,
- 51:59he supported him. They knew you wouldn't be worth blackmailing if I found
- 52:01who for Moose molloy. Oh no, no, I was snifty thinking darling
- 52:06at the canyon, one of us had get out of the car. It
- 52:07didn't matter who either way. You hadn't married and me separated, and you
- 52:10would tag us one at a time and get your eight thousand bucks and knock
- 52:14off Amthor later. Yeah, it might work too, if it hadn't been
- 52:17for a hand chasing down there after you. Of course, my head's pretty
- 52:21hard. It's true, it's all true. Everybody was closing in on me.
- 52:28I didn't know which way to turn. And it almost works, sister,
- 52:30I was almost as dead as Marriot. But killing a man with a
- 52:34black jack, oh that's no work for a lady. After it happened,
- 52:38I didn't know what you would do. No, I'm so close to peace,
- 52:44so close, just just a hampor. I can't taste it alone.
- 52:49Don't desert me now. Sure Amthor blackmailed you. He's got something on you,
- 52:52Only it isn't what you told me it isn't just men. Your husband
- 52:55could understand the men. Yeah, it's the clink looming up, and it's
- 53:00no good understanding the clink. Moose is looking for your follow Where is he?
- 53:06Where is Moose waiting for me to call him? In eight years ago
- 53:09when you were his girl? What did you talk Mose in the doing?
- 53:12Given the jail for you? Was it murder or something serious? Where are
- 53:15you going to tell him that his redhead had turned blonde? Come back?
- 53:19Huh? Oh oh gun? Oh, well, that's that's your personality,
- 53:25better than a black jack. And the pearl handle goes swell with your fingernail.
- 53:30Polyg. You know it's too bad. It has to be like this
- 53:35some moose, who is it? Well, well, come in, come
- 53:42in, darling that gun? What are you close that door? End?
- 53:46You're timing? Dear? I get worse and worse. We've been listening.
- 53:51Why didn't you tell me you were in such trouble? I wanted to stay.
- 53:53I might have been able to prevent told this now, of course it's
- 53:55too late, mister Morlow. I see your point. Can If mister m
- 53:59For is coming, I think perhaps you'd better do it quickly. Father,
- 54:02get inside the hit your hands up, mister marlow I'll have to take your
- 54:06gun. I'll be with then, helen all of ourselves again. Yes,
- 54:13you know this will be the first time I ever killed anyone. I'm so
- 54:16little about and I like so much. You and I just a couple of
- 54:22MUDs. We could have gone along. What's stopping is now I can handle
- 54:28Moose. He broke Anathor's neck yesterday. What did you something I shouldn't have
- 54:32and is dead? Yeah, and that leaves only you. I'm sorry,
- 54:38but you know too too, too much. I have to do it,
- 54:45mister molow. I had to kill her. Hello, Hello, Let's have
- 54:52the police give me that phone? Give it to me. Don't you realize
- 54:54you saved your life? Why is to suffer for that? The cops always
- 54:58like to solve murders down the my gun. She dead is not enough.
- 55:02She was evil, all evil. I think I hear a shock, mister
- 55:06Marlowe. I think I better commit Moose. Moose. It didn't work out
- 55:10the way I planned. Never mind, I could talk to thema now i'd
- 55:15Moose. Don't touch her. She hardly changed, just like always shoot as
- 55:22a buzz ear. I wasn't going to bother her. None she done all?
- 55:27Right? Who done this? I did? You should have killed her?
- 55:30Moose, You should have killed moose. Get out of my way.
- 55:34Come to me closer, bees, Moose, will you listen to me?
- 55:36Moose? That all black pet opened up again, right on schedule, blacker
- 55:49than the others and deeper. Well, that's the works. That's all I
- 55:52know. On account I didn't see so well with my eyeballs. Scort.
- 55:55They didn't keep me long at the hospital two hours ago around okay, picked
- 56:00me up and everything I've been telling you, I've been telling him. He's
- 56:02sitting right in front of me now. I wish I could see Randall,
- 56:06which the bandage wasn't on my face. I want to look at his ugly
- 56:09kisser and figure what he's thinking. Well, eh, there's a piece of
- 56:14paper here on my desk, a warrant for your arrest. I'm tearing it
- 56:19up. Oh thanks. Tonight. When it happened, I heard the shots.
- 56:25I still don't know who got hit. It wasn't a kid, wasn't
- 56:29rand No. No, you can get out of here now if you want
- 56:31to. You mean, I'm sprung? Who backed me up? Who got
- 56:36shot? I heard three moose malloy dead yes, and Grail well, we
- 56:40were fighting for the gun AND's okay. Then she thought it over while I
- 56:45was in the hospital and came around back me up right, I didn't say
- 56:49McNelly. See if he gets home. Yeah, I'll buy riding the camp.
- 56:52Model, Hey, what do you put them in my pocket? The
- 56:55necklace? She gave it to you, didn't she tried it on. It's
- 56:59wrong for my then give it to your girlfriend, stranger yourself with it.
- 57:02No, just go on beat it. Let's go model, so you can
- 57:09come in now missus Grail, Why why did you have to keep him getting
- 57:15about your backing him up? Why don't you tell him you can catch him
- 57:20outside? Just give noted the eyes hide? Oh, thank you, thank
- 57:23you? Hey nothing? Yeah, what do you know about the redhead pitching
- 57:31for me? Yeah? Hey? Oh we are alone? Am I hearing
- 57:36things? Like someone else is walking with us? The street? Lots of
- 57:40people walk on the street. Oh, she had a cute figure. I
- 57:46didn't notice. It must be low on vitamins. She had more than a
- 57:53figure too, not a beautiful face, but a good face. I didn't
- 57:58notice. Face like a Sunday school picnical there's a caf down the fly.
- 58:01Say, are you sure we're alone? Hey? Hey calf? Oh well,
- 58:05I guess you thought I like a blonde chewing on my face. I

- 59:15I don't know, Irving. I guess they'd gotten tight they had Dick Powell's
- 59:19hype for a while. Look what he's doing now, that's right June.
- 59:22Next week he starts a whole new radio series as a tough detective. You
- 59:25mean I might yet get a chance to play a sweet young housewife. How
- 59:30about me, mister Fitchell? Do you think I could play hands on and
- 59:32gretel with Margaret O'Brien. Maybe if you took a course in compression, Mike,
- 59:38you mean expression, No, I mean compression or else learning to walk
- 59:42on your knees and keep your hands behind your back. Well, what do
- 59:45we do with June to play? I think, well we just pat her
- 59:47on both cheeks and tell her to stay as sweet as she is? Oh

- 1:02:45ed Emerson and Leo Sharon. Our music was directed by Lois Silver. This
- 1:02:49program is broadcast to our fighting forces overseas through cooperation with the Armed Forces Radio
- 1:02:53Service. And this is your an answer, John M. Kennedy reminding you
- 1:02:57the tuning again next Monday night to hear the Canterville Go with Margaret O'Brien,
- 1:03:00Charles Latton and Tom Drake. Welcome back. Well, this is definitely a
- 1:03:07very good adaptation, but I hope it will inspire you to go out and
- 1:03:14watch the actual movie and pick up the book. There's a lot that does
- 1:03:17get lost when a story goes from a novel to an hour and a half
- 1:03:22movie to about forty five minutes of radio drama. One thread that they were
- 1:03:28able to cut in the radio play was Missus Florian in the movie and the
- 1:03:34book, Florian was dead and Missus Florian was one of those who was participating
- 1:03:38in the blackmail. And there were too many other plot points that were changed
- 1:03:44for me to go to or even properly document from the book, but they
- 1:03:50still ended up with a pretty strong story. One big change was the character
- 1:03:55of Moose Malloy. That's a big change with the book. In the book,
- 1:04:00Malloy actually commits a murder very early in the book when he kills the
- 1:04:06manager of Florian's, which has actually come into being a black owned establishment in
- 1:04:15the book, And so Malloy throughout was somewhat of a loose canon did not
- 1:04:19actually hire Marlowe, but marlow along the way stumbled into the truth. And
- 1:04:27there was also a whole police corruption angle. But I like the way that
- 1:04:31the movie and the radio play portrayed Malloy as differently. He comes off as
- 1:04:38kind of a tragic figure, a lovable mug guy who doesn't quite know his
- 1:04:45own strength, but is pushed into doing things he wouldn't normally do. The
- 1:04:50original book version of Maloy, you felt like the guy was just a typical
- 1:04:57animal, But Mike Mazurkey brought a lot of humanity the role. Mazurki would
- 1:05:03play a lot of tough guy characters, a lot of not so bright characters,
- 1:05:09though Mazurki himself was actually from all accounts, a very intelligent person,
- 1:05:16very upon events, and just a high IQ which wouldn't quite go with the
- 1:05:24body type. The one other reason to see the film is just to see
- 1:05:30Mazurki, particularly. He was only six' five, so perhaps by today's
- 1:05:35standards, wouldn't end up so big, but he really he just had such
- 1:05:41a presence compared to the actors of that day, just really seemed to almost
- 1:05:49tower over so much of the rest of the cast. Just a very intimidating
- 1:05:55look, and that's one thing that really makes the movie version worth seeing.
- 1:06:00This version was also interesting because of who played and for and that of course
- 1:06:06was Gerald Moore. And I have particularly found some humor in more saying that
- 1:06:14he or am saying he wouldn't make a good detective, when the guy playing
- 1:06:18at Gerald Moore would go on to actually play Philip Marlow and by many standards
- 1:06:29be perhaps the greatest radio detective of the mall. All right, well,
- 1:06:33now on to some listener comments and feedback, and this one comes from Big
- 1:06:43Kid on podcast Alley. I've enjoyed many hours of wonderful detectives and great commentary
- 1:06:47from your shows. The format is the best of any podcast. I think
- 1:06:50some of the best insights that we get from these programs are the norms of
- 1:06:55daily life, outlook and expectations of people of that era, how things changed
- 1:07:00the years. Keep up the great work. Thanks, Thank you so much.
- 1:07:02I appreciate your comment. I also received an email from John who said,
- 1:07:06absolutely love listening to the shows before I go to sleep. Keep up
- 1:07:11the good work, PS. This is the best app on my phone.
- 1:07:15Appreciate your comment, John. And then I also have a iTunes review of
- 1:07:21the app. I've been using this app for a little over a year now.
- 1:07:26I found it to be quite entertaining. The commentary on the shows is
- 1:07:29quite informative. In addition to the Golden Age radio programs, I also enjoy
- 1:07:33the video episodes that are occasionally posted. If you have any interest in old
- 1:07:38time radio, I would highly recommend this app to you. Well. I
- 1:07:43appreciate you taking time to review the app, and I'm glad that you enjoy
- 1:07:47it and that will actually do it for today. Well next week, Johnny
- 1:07:53Dollar will be back on Wednesday, but in two weeks The Adventures of Philip
- 1:07:58Marlow, the NBC version will appear in this timeslot and coming up tomorrow it
- 1:08:04is Nick Carter, Master Detective. In the meantime, if you have a
