- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinals Territory,
- 0:10Speaker 1: and we have a good one for you today. Our
- 0:12Speaker 1: guest is Steve Klin, former Cardinal reliever, current head coach
- 0:17Speaker 1: at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Kliner, nice to see you.
- 0:22Speaker 2: How are you good? Good? How are you doing? Everything? Great?
- 0:26Speaker 2: Everything's great?
- 0:27Speaker 1: You look you look like you have an age at all.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I don't do you have a recruit on campus because
- 0:31Speaker 1: you look clean, shaved and ready to go.
- 0:34Speaker 2: It's not dealing with Tony the Russ. I feel young again, Tony.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Well, look, we're going to get to your tourd love
- 0:44Speaker 1: affair with Tony and your time in Saint Louis. But
- 0:48Speaker 1: before we get to that, I wanted to get your
- 0:52Speaker 1: your opinion of what happened last night with Abner Uribe.
- 0:56Speaker 1: So Cardinals had to deal with this. Last night playing
- 1:00Speaker 1: in Milwaukee, Euribay gets Alec Burrowson looking. There was a challenge,
- 1:06Speaker 1: right and uh and he won the challenge, or or
- 1:10Speaker 1: I should say burrows and lost the challenge. So he
- 1:13Speaker 1: caught him looking and he proceeds to go all the
- 1:18Speaker 1: Generation X with the with the groin chomps and everything
- 1:21Speaker 1: really toward the cardinal dug out, and I'm thinking of
- 1:24Speaker 1: myself as I'm watching this, I'm not so sure that
- 1:28Speaker 1: that's cool. So his manager after the game said it
- 1:33Speaker 1: was unacceptable. What what say you?
- 1:36Speaker 2: What say you? Oh? Absolutely, I don't think. Yeah. I
- 1:41Speaker 2: think you just drive the first two players of the
- 1:43Speaker 2: uh of the Brewers. You find out the best player,
- 1:47Speaker 2: you smoke him, and then you smoke the next best player,
- 1:50Speaker 2: and you say this is for your guy, acting like
- 1:52Speaker 2: a buffoon. They don't like it. That's part of it,
- 1:56Speaker 2: you know. That's that kid bought it upon himself. He
- 1:58Speaker 2: brought it upon his team. You know, Murphy, I think
- 2:01Speaker 2: handled it well. I think the coach there, you know,
- 2:03Speaker 2: he gotta jump that kid. I know it's energy and
- 2:07Speaker 2: people are excited, but there's there's a certain point of
- 2:09Speaker 2: the game where some of all this crap that's going
- 2:12Speaker 2: on in baseball today is just getting a little out
- 2:14Speaker 2: of control. And then they want you to be like sportsmanship.
- 2:16Speaker 2: But then they bitch if you don't flip a bat
- 2:19Speaker 2: in there. I don't know. So it's like you're getting told,
- 2:22Speaker 2: you're getting torn both ways. But as a player, you
- 2:24Speaker 2: don't say nothing, and you just go out and you
- 2:26Speaker 2: just level the first two guys. They're two best hitters,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and you just drill them and say, hey, that's for
- 2:30Speaker 2: your boy right there. Make sure you handle it. And
- 2:33Speaker 2: if they don't handle it, just you know, then they
- 2:35Speaker 2: just it might get a little ugly. You guys got
- 2:37Speaker 2: to play them with nineteen more times or so. I
- 2:39Speaker 2: guess something like that. I'm not sure.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Here's the thing. You're a head coach, now, what would
- 2:45Speaker 1: you tell your kid. It's a kid, obviously Murphy likes
- 2:47Speaker 1: a kid, said it was unacceptable, don't know what, doesn't
- 2:50Speaker 1: know what got into him.
- 2:53Speaker 2: What would you.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Say to your kid if he had done something like
- 2:56Speaker 1: that and try to show up the opposition.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm big against that. I'm I'm still kind of
- 3:03Speaker 2: like the old time players where you didn't show any
- 3:06Speaker 2: kind of distressed to the other team. I just think
- 3:11Speaker 2: as a coach, you just try. You don't want to
- 3:13Speaker 2: maybe you don't want to open a giant hornet's nest
- 3:16Speaker 2: or whatever you want. So I would be all over
- 3:18Speaker 2: him and I'd be making I actually tell him, probably
- 3:20Speaker 2: go to apologize to the other manager the other team
- 3:23Speaker 2: and just say, you know, but it depends what was
- 3:27Speaker 2: going on before if the Cardinals were yapping and talking
- 3:29Speaker 2: and all that stuff, then you know, then it's a
- 3:32Speaker 2: little bit easier to handle. But if it's something where
- 3:35Speaker 2: he just did all of the blue, it's like, yeah,
- 3:37Speaker 2: you you just got our best players in trouble. And
- 3:39Speaker 2: I think sometimes the manager's saying this stuff out in
- 3:42Speaker 2: public just so that his best players don't get hit
- 3:44Speaker 2: in the neck, you know, because they just sets up
- 3:47Speaker 2: for fines. It sets up the more you can just
- 3:49Speaker 2: let it go under the radar and then you just
- 3:51Speaker 2: smoke them when you want to hit them. I mean,
- 3:53Speaker 2: you don't have to hit them today. You can wait
- 3:54Speaker 2: till you know, they come to Saint Louis and then
- 3:57Speaker 2: you draw them a couple of times, you know, then
- 3:59Speaker 2: you take them down to one of the bars and
- 4:01Speaker 2: you hit him again.
- 4:05Speaker 1: So as a coach, though, like I think Murphy was
- 4:09Speaker 1: trying to also say good kid, So you have to
- 4:12Speaker 1: also maintain that you don't want to throw your player
- 4:15Speaker 1: under the bus. So in a sense you have to
- 4:18Speaker 1: you have to make sure everyone knows that's unacceptable. But
- 4:20Speaker 1: at the same time, you also don't want to ruin
- 4:24Speaker 1: your relationship with a player who made a mistake.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he's young, and you're gonna tell man,
- 4:30Speaker 2: whatever you did was not right. It is like when
- 4:32Speaker 2: I gave the finger to Tony, right, it wasn't right,
- 4:35Speaker 2: and he yelled at me and he chewed me out,
- 4:36Speaker 2: and I accepted it, and I took the blame for it,
- 4:39Speaker 2: and that's what you do, you know, and it just
- 4:41Speaker 2: happens to the here of the moment. But it was
- 4:43Speaker 2: it wrong. Yeah, I embarrassed the team, embarrassed, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 2: the Cardinal Nation. But it's the same thing with this kid.
- 4:50Speaker 2: This kid, okay, I get your high energy. He probably
- 4:53Speaker 2: doesn't even know what the heck he was doing. He
- 4:55Speaker 2: doesn't understand anything about WCW wrestling, so he doesn't know
- 4:58Speaker 2: who Generation X is really, you know, trying to might
- 5:01Speaker 2: come out and smack him with a clothesline or something.
- 5:03Speaker 2: But you know, unfortunately, you know, you got to find out.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Sometimes you find out by just finding out. Basically, you
- 5:10Speaker 2: do some stupid things. Well they say, you play stupid games,
- 5:13Speaker 2: you win stupid prizes. So I mean, right now, he's
- 5:17Speaker 2: the guy that just motivated the Cardinals hopefully go out
- 5:20Speaker 2: and smash the Brewers around a little bit.
- 5:24Speaker 1: So baseball has a long memory. And I've seen this
- 5:27Speaker 1: before covering baseball for a long time. You think something
- 5:32Speaker 1: has to happen the very next game, but it doesn't
- 5:36Speaker 1: because maybe the opportunity didn't present itself. And as you mentioned,
- 5:41Speaker 1: maybe it's a series down the road where suddenly someone's
- 5:44Speaker 1: wearing one in the in the thigh or something like that.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I think if you if you do it right away,
- 5:53Speaker 2: sometimes you put yourself in a bad spot. You might
- 5:55Speaker 2: lose a game. You don't try to lose a game
- 5:57Speaker 2: just because you're trying to hold a grudge against someone.
- 6:00Speaker 2: You got to pick the moments. Maybe it's a fifteen
- 6:02Speaker 2: or nothing game, maybe it's when you're down nine to
- 6:05Speaker 2: nothing in the last inning something, but you're you're not
- 6:08Speaker 2: picking it right go out and start the game off
- 6:11Speaker 2: with it. You're trying to find a spot where it
- 6:13Speaker 2: might be nobody on two outs and they got their
- 6:16Speaker 2: best player come up, and you're like, okay, this is
- 6:18Speaker 2: about work. But like you said, you want to poke
- 6:20Speaker 2: the bear and wake up the giant two and then
- 6:22Speaker 2: you get the battle of that stuff going on and
- 6:24Speaker 2: who can handle the emotions? You know, That's why I
- 6:26Speaker 2: love hockey. They just go and punch each other in
- 6:28Speaker 2: the face and they enjoy it, you know, and then
- 6:31Speaker 2: they get the twitter back out there. Let him go
- 6:35Speaker 2: crazy on some people.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Scariest man I ever met. That is the scariest man
- 6:39Speaker 1: I ever met.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I mean to this day. I mean, he's still ripped
- 6:45Speaker 1: and I think he would still take care of business.
- 6:49Speaker 1: You mentioned the time you were in the bullpen. Tony
- 6:52Speaker 1: got you up site. Now don't got your upset, and
- 6:54Speaker 1: then you didn't like it, and you let him know
- 6:57Speaker 1: what you were feeling by giving him the middle finger
- 7:01Speaker 1: from the bullpen, which the camera picked up. So everyone
- 7:03Speaker 1: knew about it. And Tony didn't even know about it
- 7:06Speaker 1: until after the game when the media told him, and
- 7:09Speaker 1: he said, excuse me for a minute, and he went
- 7:12Speaker 1: to talk to you right away. What did he say
- 7:14Speaker 1: in that moment? I never asked you that before. What
- 7:17Speaker 1: did he say to you in that moment.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I was in the shower and I was butt naked
- 7:22Speaker 2: with rentorrhea and frigan. I think Vigenya was next to me.
- 7:28Speaker 2: He just he launched into me pretty good. He told me,
- 7:30Speaker 2: you know that, whatever you know, he goes, I love
- 7:33Speaker 2: your fire, but I what you did is not right.
- 7:36Speaker 2: And you know, and I didn't even know I did it.
- 7:39Speaker 2: I didn't know I got caught. I mean, I know
- 7:40Speaker 2: I gave him the finger or whatever, but I didn't think,
- 7:43Speaker 2: you know how you're just pissed, you know, pod at
- 7:46Speaker 2: something and you just kind of do the old you know,
- 7:49Speaker 2: salute or whatever I did. And then I didn't think
- 7:51Speaker 2: anybody caught it. You don't know. I didn't know the
- 7:53Speaker 2: cameras caught me either until after the game, you know.
- 7:57Speaker 2: And then Tony was like, and then he goes, you've
- 8:00Speaker 2: got and me tell the media that I beat the
- 8:02Speaker 2: living crap out of you, and he wanted the pieces
- 8:04Speaker 2: of me pretty good. He wasn't. That's the first time
- 8:06Speaker 2: I ever seen Tony kind of hot, really mad, you know.
- 8:10Speaker 2: But I mean I didn't blame him. I mean, I
- 8:12Speaker 2: knew I made a mistake there, but it was like,
- 8:16Speaker 2: you know, but he he got me back. You know,
- 8:19Speaker 2: when I gave up my first run after like I
- 8:21Speaker 2: think I went scoreless for like so many appearances, and
- 8:24Speaker 2: then he, uh, I gave up a run. I think
- 8:27Speaker 2: it was the Diamondbacks or something, and I look in
- 8:29Speaker 2: the dugout and he's giving me a middle finger from
- 8:31Speaker 2: from the bench, So it was kind of good. So,
- 8:33Speaker 2: I mean it was it was uh, it was called
- 8:36Speaker 2: for for him to give it back to me, and
- 8:37Speaker 2: I accepted it, and that's where we kind of squashed it.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I love him, though, I would play for that guy
- 8:41Speaker 2: on the day of the week, you know, and that's uh,
- 8:43Speaker 2: he knows that, and he knows I'm kind of fiery.
- 8:46Speaker 2: But I just lost my edge and I needed to
- 8:50Speaker 2: grow up a little bit, even though I was probably
- 8:52Speaker 2: thirty some years old, I just needed to grow up
- 8:53Speaker 2: a little bit more. It happens.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Hey, we're going to talk more about Steve Klein than
- 8:58Speaker 1: his time in Saint Louis and his relationship with Tony LaRussa.

- 10:07Speaker 1: Gold back with Steve Klein. Four years as a cardinal
- 10:12Speaker 1: combined era. Over those years two point six y nine. Boy,
- 10:17Speaker 1: you make twenty million dollars a year right now as
- 10:20Speaker 1: a player and the postseason the ra zero point nine six.
- 10:25Speaker 1: But when you think about your time in Saint Louis
- 10:28Speaker 1: and you had a taste of the postseason a couple
- 10:30Speaker 1: of times, one of the things that stand out, what
- 10:32Speaker 1: do you remember when you think about your time as
- 10:35Speaker 1: a cardinal.
- 10:37Speaker 4: One?
- 10:37Speaker 2: I think I choked twice, killed the team. We had
- 10:40Speaker 2: a chance to win it. So that still those with
- 10:43Speaker 2: me and haunts me a lot, the more the more.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Tony was one of them, right, Tony wore Mack.
- 10:49Speaker 2: And Kenny Lofton and Kenny Lofton and kew the old
- 10:51Speaker 2: teammates to mine. They came back to bite me in
- 10:53Speaker 2: the butt, you know. But I realized, you know, as
- 10:56Speaker 2: you get older, you're like, well, I was a guy
- 10:58Speaker 2: out there, so it's of the game. But uh, just
- 11:01Speaker 2: the friendships. Something being around Isray House and Edmunds, Mark McGuire,
- 11:06Speaker 2: Poles rolling. I had so many great Woody Williams, Darryl
- 11:10Speaker 2: Kyle H. Carpenter, you know, seeing Wayne Wright come up
- 11:14Speaker 2: as a young baby, Yannie come up as young babe
- 11:17Speaker 2: METHENI punching me in the face all the time, beating
- 11:19Speaker 2: me up. Uh, cal Eldred, like, these were guys that
- 11:23Speaker 2: you just loved. And today I cherish all the memories
- 11:27Speaker 2: I had with those guys. And it was just we
- 11:29Speaker 2: had such a great team, and Larry Walker came over.
- 11:32Speaker 2: We had such a great team and we didn't we
- 11:35Speaker 2: didn't finish the deal. It kind of sits, you know,
- 11:37Speaker 2: on the bottom of your stomach and you think, what
- 11:39Speaker 2: could I have done different? But you know what, we
- 11:42Speaker 2: played the game and we lost, and you tip your
- 11:44Speaker 2: hat to the Red Sox, and you tip your hat
- 11:45Speaker 2: to the Diamondbacks and the Giants. But at the end
- 11:49Speaker 2: of the day, it was nothing better than going out
- 11:51Speaker 2: there and playing in front of the sea of red,
- 11:52Speaker 2: a seel red and like I said, the Cardinals on
- 11:55Speaker 2: the bat tradition. Everything you want to say about old
- 11:59Speaker 2: time baseball to George, you know, Georgie, to Red to
- 12:04Speaker 2: you know, mister Kissel, I guess you guys, if you
- 12:06Speaker 2: don't know who George is to like Bob you know,
- 12:08Speaker 2: Gibson walking around, Brock coming back acurously like it was
- 12:12Speaker 2: nothing better than when you see these guys coming around.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I even got to meet in a slaughter my first year.
- 12:17Speaker 2: It was unbelievable. So you're like, you're talking like old
- 12:20Speaker 2: time you know, Teddy sav it was like the greats,
- 12:24Speaker 2: you know, meeting the Matt Hungarian, watching him act like
- 12:27Speaker 2: a nut job, with you going out having some beers.
- 12:29Speaker 2: It was great. But uh, just the town itself. I
- 12:33Speaker 2: just enjoyed the people. I loved. That was my It
- 12:36Speaker 2: was my comfort zone. I just felt like anywhere I
- 12:38Speaker 2: went people were great, and uh, everybody had a good
- 12:41Speaker 2: thing to say that you know, there was times that
- 12:43Speaker 2: you know, they probably wanted to tell you that whatever,
- 12:45Speaker 2: but almost everybody was very generous and very nice, and
- 12:49Speaker 2: they just loved the Cardinals. And if you love the
- 12:52Speaker 2: Cardinals back, they showed you a little respect. You know.
- 12:55Speaker 1: The Cardinal Way was something that was right at the
- 12:58Speaker 1: core of it for a while. Then it became sort
- 13:00Speaker 1: of a punchline, which I really didn't like, because that
- 13:03Speaker 1: Cardinal Way made for some great baseball, some great players,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and some great ball clubs that I got to watch
- 13:11Speaker 1: that twenty and fourteen. You guys were a juggernaut and
- 13:14Speaker 1: got swept kind of tank was on empty when you
- 13:17Speaker 1: face the Red Sox. And as I recalled, didn't you
- 13:19Speaker 1: have a finger injury right, so you had to miss?
- 13:23Speaker 2: Yeah. I tore my I tore my ten and my
- 13:25Speaker 2: finger near the middle of the year, and then I
- 13:29Speaker 2: tried to play with it, and you know, I kept
- 13:31Speaker 2: going the toward all shots and I'd have surgery in
- 13:34Speaker 2: the offseason, but you know, this is your chance. And
- 13:37Speaker 2: then I think Tony and those guys that at the
- 13:39Speaker 2: at the end, they're like, you know what, we gotta
- 13:41Speaker 2: make our decision. And the Red Sox were just a go.
- 13:43Speaker 2: They were a team of destiny. That year. We lost
- 13:46Speaker 2: Carpenter right there. He got hurt kind of right through
- 13:49Speaker 2: that year. I think MATHENI I don't know if he
- 13:53Speaker 2: was going through the concussion problems yet. I think I
- 13:56Speaker 2: think that was more with the Giants. I'm not sure.
- 13:58Speaker 2: My ears are getting mixed up, but uh yeah, I
- 14:01Speaker 2: mean we had a good team. We really did we,
- 14:04Speaker 2: you know. I mean, but you think about Pedro Shilling.
- 14:08Speaker 2: You know, Apple Bahm was coming up as a young kid.
- 14:10Speaker 2: They had dam and they had this dad, they had
- 14:13Speaker 2: the swag. We just we had our best season ever
- 14:16Speaker 2: I think in one of the Cardinals years, and we
- 14:17Speaker 2: just we went in there and you know, they didn't
- 14:21Speaker 2: have the member. They didn't even have the hotel ready
- 14:23Speaker 2: for us up in Boston. We had a scattered to
- 14:25Speaker 2: find hotels. People. I mean like they were like, oh,
- 14:28Speaker 2: we thought the Yankees. Everybody thought the Yankees was going
- 14:30Speaker 2: to win that. Seriously, they had us all ready for
- 14:32Speaker 2: the the Sweet Hyatt down there and you know, Grand
- 14:36Speaker 2: Central Station or whatever. But and all of a sudden.
- 14:38Speaker 2: We were, you know, changing our travel plans getting to Boston,
- 14:42Speaker 2: and we just walked into you know, Manny and Ortiz,
- 14:45Speaker 2: and I mean they were good air tech.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I mean, you guys stay like like fifteen minutes away
- 14:51Speaker 1: right at a hotel nowhere.
- 14:54Speaker 2: An hour about an hour away. It was you know
- 14:56Speaker 2: how Boston traffic is, and everybody was mooning you and
- 14:59Speaker 2: throwing rocks at the bus when we went in. You know,
- 15:03Speaker 2: it was it was a hostile environment. But you know,
- 15:06Speaker 2: that's what you love to play, and that's the stuff.
- 15:08Speaker 2: And I was, like I said, it was just it
- 15:09Speaker 2: went so fast and we just we just couldn't get her.
- 15:12Speaker 2: You know, it was like a boxer. We just got
- 15:14Speaker 2: punched in the face and we just couldn't get her
- 15:15Speaker 2: our bearing set and they just kind of took it
- 15:18Speaker 2: to us. We could we couldn't score. After the first game,
- 15:20Speaker 2: we had our first shot and in the bell horn
- 15:22Speaker 2: hit the home run kind of you know, off Tavares,
- 15:26Speaker 2: I think it was or something. But then you had
- 15:28Speaker 2: a couple of guys show up, like Kiko and some
- 15:30Speaker 2: other guys really pitched really well and showed, uh, you know,
- 15:33Speaker 2: made cardinal names for themselves. You know, Coolero and stuff
- 15:36Speaker 2: like that. So it was nice to you know, like
- 15:39Speaker 2: you just you know you you look back at it
- 15:42Speaker 2: and you're like, wow, it was it was so fast.
- 15:43Speaker 2: We didn't give it. We could have gave a better series,
- 15:46Speaker 2: but it wasn't like we weren't trying. We sup On
- 15:49Speaker 2: tripped over his own feet trying to run around the bases.
- 15:52Speaker 2: You know. I see that on TV once in a while,
- 15:54Speaker 2: and I started laughing as soon as Actually, he's a
- 15:58Speaker 2: good athlete and he just even his wife was probably
- 16:00Speaker 2: a better athlete than him. We won't tell him that
- 16:03Speaker 2: that's Pennsylvanian high school basketball. She was. She was a
- 16:07Speaker 2: pretty good player.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And I bring it up to him. We've we've had
- 16:11Speaker 1: him on our podcast too. I bring that up all
- 16:13Speaker 1: the time.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I'm glad I'm one of the last ones on the podcast.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Thanks guys, you were one I was looking forward to.
- 16:21Speaker 1: We were we were talking about about Tony LaRussa earlier,
- 16:26Speaker 1: and you have a love hate bred like I know
- 16:27Speaker 1: you love the guy, I know you respect him, but
- 16:29Speaker 1: you guys would give it back and forth to each other.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Tell me what it was like playing for Tony Larus
- 16:36Speaker 1: because to me, he's he's one of the greatest minds
- 16:39Speaker 1: baseball ever had.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Yeah, there's things that I learned from him that I
- 16:44Speaker 2: cherish as a coach. He didn't show a lot of motion,
- 16:47Speaker 2: but behind the scenes he be on you. He wasn't
- 16:49Speaker 2: afraid to tell you. And he's very honest and very
- 16:52Speaker 2: truthful to it, which I liked. That was part of it.
- 16:54Speaker 2: He and he was, you know, the lawyer thing. You know,
- 16:56Speaker 2: he would write things down and you know, bring it
- 16:59Speaker 2: back up to you. And I was just a young
- 17:03Speaker 2: I just wanted to you know, we're like the young
- 17:05Speaker 2: kid that just wants to go out there and fight
- 17:07Speaker 2: and snap and run around do stupid stuff. And he
- 17:09Speaker 2: was he had to put the collar on us and
- 17:11Speaker 2: pulls back a little bit. But other than that, I
- 17:13Speaker 2: just enjoyed the moments with it. He taught me so
- 17:16Speaker 2: much about baseball, the way he thought about things and
- 17:18Speaker 2: this the way he handled the players, like he knew
- 17:21Speaker 2: how to get to your wife, your mom, your dad,
- 17:24Speaker 2: and then you were you had to go get suckered
- 17:27Speaker 2: into it, and you didn't want to piss off Duncan.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Duncan was the muscle you know, you made Duncan Matt
- 17:31Speaker 2: He he might throw you in with the Hell's Angels
- 17:34Speaker 2: and get you beat up or something. You know, So
- 17:35Speaker 2: it was like Dunk was a bad dude, so he
- 17:37Speaker 2: didn't mess with him too much. But uh, like I said,
- 17:41Speaker 2: LaRussa was very methodical and when he said something to you,
- 17:46Speaker 2: it was for a reason. It wasn't u. He just
- 17:48Speaker 2: didn't talk to talk. But he was very honest. Like
- 17:52Speaker 2: I said, if you did something, he would protect you
- 17:55Speaker 2: in front of the media. I believe he was very
- 17:57Speaker 2: good with some guys, and some guys he'd throw under
- 17:59Speaker 2: the bus. I think I don't know. You guys might
- 18:01Speaker 2: know more about that, but he would always protect you,
- 18:04Speaker 2: like anytime you screwed up. It was ah, I shouldn't
- 18:07Speaker 2: have put him, and he looked tired and he's been
- 18:09Speaker 2: pitching well. But you know, he always had an excuse
- 18:11Speaker 2: for it and he took the blame, which I really
- 18:13Speaker 2: respected for him from him. Uh. You know, he wasn't
- 18:16Speaker 2: like when you get up to hit you're like, well
- 18:17Speaker 2: he sucked today. You know, he never said that. He
- 18:19Speaker 2: always made you feel like, you know, it was a
- 18:22Speaker 2: team effort, never your your fault for anything. And that
- 18:26Speaker 2: was a good That was one of the biggest things
- 18:28Speaker 2: I take out of him as a coach, now, you know,
- 18:31Speaker 2: because I had him at Bochi and they're totally different people.
- 18:33Speaker 2: And I had Felipe who was completely off his rocker two,
- 18:37Speaker 2: which they are three of the best managers I've ever had.
- 18:40Speaker 1: So I want to bring up Dave Duncan because you
- 18:43Speaker 1: mentioned him, and Dave Duncan was old school and and.
- 18:46Speaker 2: A tough guy.
- 18:47Speaker 1: But to me, he was one of the first analytics
- 18:50Speaker 1: guys before analytics were rent And let me explain. He
- 18:53Speaker 1: had these giant binders with every piece of data. Now,
- 18:58Speaker 1: he didn't have a computer, didn't have a laptop, didn't
- 19:00Speaker 1: have a touchscreen. But I remember him doing sidelines in
- 19:03Speaker 1: the game and I mentioned some situation in the game.
- 19:07Speaker 1: In the middle of the game, he said, do you want
- 19:09Speaker 1: to know why I made that decision? And he opened
- 19:12Speaker 1: these bindings. He had like four giant binders and he
- 19:15Speaker 1: was paged through and he's found a number and he
- 19:18Speaker 1: showed me why this guy was numbers oriented before this
- 19:23Speaker 1: wave of analytics came around. So when I think about
- 19:26Speaker 1: Dave Duncan, I think about a pitching coach who was
- 19:29Speaker 1: ahead of his time.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Yeah, we were all analytical. Back then people act like
- 19:33Speaker 2: it's like it just did. We didn't have the technology.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Duncan wrote down everybody. Marin, you're a kid. You knew
- 19:38Speaker 2: every stat you like rubbed the back of the baseball cards.
- 19:41Speaker 2: You knew who was the best hitter in clutch situation.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Hobby Lopez from Atlanta Braves was one of the best
- 19:46Speaker 2: hitters number wise, probably ever with guys in scoring position.
- 19:49Speaker 2: He just came up big time. So, yeah, you knew
- 19:51Speaker 2: guys that did certain things in certain spots. Like Duncan
- 19:55Speaker 2: would tell me, you're the only guy I want to
- 19:56Speaker 2: face Barry Bonds in this series in two thousand and two,
- 19:59Speaker 2: I think he told he goes, we're not going to
- 20:01Speaker 2: pitch to him. We're gonna you know, he knew everything
- 20:03Speaker 2: about everybody. He had Mike Matheni, he had Yanni, had
- 20:06Speaker 2: Chris Widgard, we had Charlie, like we had guys at
- 20:09Speaker 2: Eli Morero. You know, they all sat in that room
- 20:11Speaker 2: and he, you know, he would talk to us like, Hey,
- 20:14Speaker 2: what we're going to do this guy. That's how we're
- 20:15Speaker 2: going to pitch him. And he knew which guy could
- 20:17Speaker 2: do what he was like, Hey, you can pitch up
- 20:19Speaker 2: in his own. He would tell is he you can
- 20:21Speaker 2: throw up in his own to this guy, you got
- 20:22Speaker 2: enough gas to get it, buy him climbing. You have
- 20:24Speaker 2: to stay down. You got to mix your stuff. He
- 20:26Speaker 2: knew all his stuff and we trusted him, and he
- 20:28Speaker 2: was just he was a resurrector of baseball arms Woody Williams,
- 20:31Speaker 2: you know, Karp. These guys all seem to get better
- 20:34Speaker 2: when they're under Duncan. And he he didn't say much.
- 20:38Speaker 2: He was very soft spoken, but when he said something,
- 20:42Speaker 2: it was like a big stick coming out at you.
- 20:44Speaker 2: So we loved him. I mean, he was like he
- 20:46Speaker 2: was a true Like I said, our coaching staff were
- 20:48Speaker 2: so so awesome at the time. People don't realize, like,
- 20:51Speaker 2: you know, Marty Mason and all those guys, Patini, all
- 20:54Speaker 2: those guys. They were fun of kendo, you know. And
- 20:57Speaker 2: you had just George Kissel sitting in their corner laughing
- 20:59Speaker 2: at us all the time, which made it even better.
- 21:02Speaker 2: But he was very smart. Duncan was like top notch,
- 21:06Speaker 2: like you said he was. He was a catcher for God. Say,
- 21:08Speaker 2: he knew, he knew swings, he knew what guys were
- 21:11Speaker 2: trying to do, you know, and he just prepped you,
- 21:14Speaker 2: and he made sure that you were prepared before the game.
- 21:17Speaker 2: And that's what my players got to learn here at
- 21:20Speaker 2: college is how they get prepared.
- 21:23Speaker 1: The two thousand for you had a really good year.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Then they didn't bring you back. You go to Baltimore,
- 21:28Speaker 1: and I'm just wondering because I read some things at
- 21:31Speaker 1: the time, like you didn't have Edmondson Center, you didn't
- 21:34Speaker 1: run reasure. What was that like, your first year not
- 21:38Speaker 1: being a cardinal after that run you had?
- 21:40Speaker 2: Oh, I just didn't. You just had just went to
- 21:43Speaker 2: the World Series four years in a row of teams
- 21:45Speaker 2: that were great. Oils were great. I thought he was
- 21:49Speaker 2: a good organization. I was like one of my teams
- 21:50Speaker 2: growing up as a kid. It's close to home for
- 21:52Speaker 2: me back in Pennsylvania. I just didn't have it. I just,
- 21:55Speaker 2: like I said, I just needed to mature a little bit. Really,
- 21:58Speaker 2: I met some really nice people over there. Just uh,
- 22:02Speaker 2: I just when I suck, I just I blame myself
- 22:04Speaker 2: and I didn't Now I threw some guys like that.
- 22:07Speaker 2: I said some bad things and I regretted it. But
- 22:10Speaker 2: it was like it's hard to get up for games
- 22:12Speaker 2: when you're playing in front of fifty thousand, and then
- 22:14Speaker 2: you go to a place where you know, it was
- 22:15Speaker 2: kind of and the Yankees and the Red Sox were
- 22:17Speaker 2: so good at that time. They just you know, they
- 22:19Speaker 2: spent so much money. They were just destroying people. And
- 22:22Speaker 2: I think I got there and rebuild, and Sammy Sosa
- 22:24Speaker 2: was there and he was a cub, and I didn't
- 22:26Speaker 2: like him because he was a cub, you know, but
- 22:29Speaker 2: it was part of it, you know, like there's things
- 22:30Speaker 2: in there just you didn't jell as a team, like
- 22:32Speaker 2: I didn't have my my faithful. If I go out
- 22:35Speaker 2: and give up a hit as he came in and
- 22:36Speaker 2: got everybody out, made me look good. You know. You
- 22:39Speaker 2: know that's well.
- 22:42Speaker 1: It all worked that well. Because now you're coaching college kids.
- 22:45Speaker 1: We'll get into that after we take our last break.
- 22:47Speaker 1: You're watching Cardinal Territory. I'm a Foul Territory Network godfather.
- 22:52Speaker 3: I'm a last minute guy. Sometimes you're a last minutic
- 22:54Speaker 3: guy where you all of a sudden see a night
- 22:56Speaker 3: open up and you want to go grab some tickets
- 22:59Speaker 3: and you hadn't got them already, So you're going to
- 23:01Speaker 3: see Geek and you're gonna go look for a green
- 23:04Speaker 3: dot and see where the good seats are and the
- 23:05Speaker 3: good value is and have a little night with the fam.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Right without a doubt. And I'm looking for some of
- 23:11Speaker 5: the best seats. I'm looking for that green dot. When
- 23:13Speaker 5: I get that. It's a simple plug it in, use
- 23:16Speaker 5: your hands, go right on your screen, your phone, whatever
- 23:20Speaker 5: platform you can get it on. And it's so simple.
- 23:22Speaker 5: They make it so easy for you to do. Even
- 23:26Speaker 5: my son can do it if I ask them, Hey, Blikester,
- 23:28Speaker 5: let's go. Man, get on there for us. Find us
- 23:30Speaker 5: a couple of seats so we can watch even that
- 23:32Speaker 5: Subway series. That would be fantastic. Seat Geek has it
- 23:35Speaker 5: all there for you.
- 23:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and the code for you. You should know it.
- 23:39Speaker 3: It's Territory ten. It just gets you ten percent off
- 23:41Speaker 3: your next set of tickets. It's Eke ten percent off
- 23:43Speaker 3: any tickets with promo code Territory one zero. Make sure
- 23:46Speaker 3: you click the link in the description, download the app.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Then the code is automatically added to your council.
- 23:51Speaker 2: You can use it later.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Back with Steve Klein, and Steve was coaching in the
- 23:55Speaker 1: Giants minor league system for many years and I believe
- 23:59Speaker 1: at Lisa rode a twenty twenty one, you get the
- 24:02Speaker 1: head coaching job at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. You're a
- 24:06Speaker 1: Pennsylvania kid, so you're kind of home. I think you're
- 24:10Speaker 1: what a couple hours from where you were born, so
- 24:12Speaker 1: it's got to be a nice fit for you.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's beautiful. It's like a small town, just like
- 24:18Speaker 2: like kind of where I grew up. You know, it's
- 24:20Speaker 2: about in between Pittsburgh and Altoona. Right, so if everybody
- 24:25Speaker 2: this is a legendary home of Jimmy Stewart, people need
- 24:29Speaker 2: to know the history of Jimmy Stewart, you know, a
- 24:31Speaker 2: wonderful life guy. And then you have this is Signetti's hometown.
- 24:36Speaker 2: You know, the coach Kurk Signetti. Frank Signetti was his dad.
- 24:40Speaker 2: He was a football The fields named after him here
- 24:43Speaker 2: and everything like that, so you know, it's kind of
- 24:46Speaker 2: a football background. I mean, Jimmy Haslett was here. Valera
- 24:52Speaker 2: was a big offensive tackle guy that was here. He
- 24:54Speaker 2: coaches like Saint Francis. And then we have Nick Sirianni
- 24:58Speaker 2: kind of graduate from here and stuff, coach here a
- 25:00Speaker 2: little bit, and now he's with the Eagles. But like
- 25:04Speaker 2: I said, it's you know, I'm close to Altoons, so
- 25:06Speaker 2: I get to go see the Squirrels when they come in.
- 25:08Speaker 2: I get to see the Richmond Fine Squirrels, my old
- 25:11Speaker 2: old team. And then you know, I get to go
- 25:13Speaker 2: to the Pirates and watch a couple of when the
- 25:15Speaker 2: big league boys come in, I get to go over
- 25:17Speaker 2: and all.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Right, My question, Steve is what you went to West
- 25:21Speaker 1: Virginia as a baseball player. You're an old school guy.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Are college players different now than they were when you
- 25:29Speaker 1: were a college player? And how do you handle that
- 25:32Speaker 1: if if that's the case.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I think everybody's they believe, they believe the hype nowadays.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Back in the old days, you got a hat, a
- 25:42Speaker 2: T shirt, you went and played baseball because you love
- 25:44Speaker 2: to play. Now you gotta have facilities, you gotta have
- 25:48Speaker 2: ANHI money, you gotta have this or that. I'm like,
- 25:51Speaker 2: you gotta earn. Like I keep trying to explain to
- 25:53Speaker 2: these kids, you got to earn his stuff before you
- 25:54Speaker 2: get it. I mean, high school is great, but once
- 25:57Speaker 2: that yearbook closes, you know, it's like, you know, you're
- 25:59Speaker 2: starting to play against the not just you know, your
- 26:02Speaker 2: own state, but you're playing against the whole country. And
- 26:04Speaker 2: then you're playing against even foreign kids. Now you're so
- 26:07Speaker 2: you're getting a whole different variety of baseball than what
- 26:11Speaker 2: I had When I was in college. It was you
- 26:13Speaker 2: stuck territorial and you wanted to play for a school
- 26:16Speaker 2: that you kind of admired as a kid and you
- 26:19Speaker 2: kind of liked. And now kids will go from Florida
- 26:22Speaker 2: up to you know, New York, and they'll go from
- 26:24Speaker 2: California to and the baseball game has expanded, which is
- 26:27Speaker 2: great for the game. And I you know, I love
- 26:30Speaker 2: seeing like all the big TV the TV deals now
- 26:35Speaker 2: getting out there for some of these college baseball because
- 26:38Speaker 2: I mean college softball dominated for a long time. They're
- 26:40Speaker 2: in that department. But in like Little League World Series
- 26:42Speaker 2: was great, but now the baseball is getting itsnowledgement. And
- 26:47Speaker 2: I just still think some of the kids are tough.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Those We got some really good kids that work hard
- 26:51Speaker 2: and they're trying to balance their academics with their athletics.
- 26:55Speaker 2: But uh, you know, I think we are getting better
- 27:00Speaker 2: and better of resources, and you're getting better like video
- 27:03Speaker 2: of guys you can you know, kids are starting to
- 27:05Speaker 2: get recruited in like eighth grade.
- 27:07Speaker 1: It's it's insane, you know, and do you have nil money.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Do you have nil money that you got to parse out?
- 27:15Speaker 1: I know you're d two, But.
- 27:17Speaker 2: I go and get blood at the I get blood
- 27:19Speaker 2: the blood banket and they gave it back to me,
- 27:21Speaker 2: you know, But that's about No, we don't have an
- 27:24Speaker 2: l I money. There's a couple of teams that have it.
- 27:26Speaker 2: I think one team in our conference in the Peace
- 27:29Speaker 2: AC have it. But mostly like Tampa and some of
- 27:32Speaker 2: the really good details schools have it. I mean, which
- 27:34Speaker 2: you know, kudos of them if that's your that helps
- 27:37Speaker 2: you get the kid anything for the kid in that
- 27:39Speaker 2: college athlete you want them to, you know, because we're
- 27:41Speaker 2: going to abuse them and try to get the Muscle
- 27:43Speaker 2: Weekend album, so they might also get the most all
- 27:45Speaker 2: of us too. So I get it. I played on
- 27:47Speaker 2: the other side where I was like I would have
- 27:49Speaker 2: done anything for the mountaineers, you know, and I am
- 27:52Speaker 2: i juco and now you know, I'm on this side
- 27:54Speaker 2: where you're coaching, and you you know, you you push
- 27:57Speaker 2: them a little further and a little further every time,
- 27:59Speaker 2: and you know I'm hard on them. I'm very strict,
- 28:03Speaker 2: which I never thought it would be. And I'm you
- 28:06Speaker 2: just worry about everything outside of baseball. Then baseball. As
- 28:09Speaker 2: a coach, you gotta worry about grades. You gotta worry
- 28:12Speaker 2: about relationships, you gotta worry about alumni. You gotta worry
- 28:15Speaker 2: about facilities. You gotta worry about recruiting. You got to
- 28:18Speaker 2: worry about where the money's coming from, you know, fundraising.
- 28:22Speaker 2: That's the stuff that this drives you. You know, trives
- 28:26Speaker 2: me to be old and look like Catman.
- 28:29Speaker 1: But I think you look young. You look certainly you
- 28:32Speaker 1: are younger than me by about ten years.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Last last thing, you can't polish a turn, cat you
- 28:37Speaker 2: can't polish a turn. You look great.
- 28:41Speaker 1: So pitching is different now than it used to be.
- 28:45Speaker 1: And I know you probably have some kids who would
- 28:47Speaker 1: like eventually to get to the next level, right, maybe
- 28:50Speaker 1: be major leaguers. But now it seems like everyone throws
- 28:54Speaker 1: a hundred. And it used to be like a small
- 28:57Speaker 1: window for the control pitchers who maybe had a specialty
- 29:01Speaker 1: pitch like yourself, didn't throw one hundred miles an hour.
- 29:05Speaker 1: I don't know if those guys get a sniff anymore.
- 29:08Speaker 1: What's your sense of of what baseball's looking for now?
- 29:13Speaker 2: Yeah, every sport changes and adapts and keeps making I
- 29:17Speaker 2: think I think the radar guns are full of crap.
- 29:20Speaker 2: I think either the machines have gotten better to pick
- 29:23Speaker 2: up the rate or they're picking it up once you
- 29:26Speaker 2: release it now instead of crossing the plate. I don't
- 29:28Speaker 2: know what they're they're really doing with that, so I
- 29:31Speaker 2: think I think baseball had a little moment where they
- 29:33Speaker 2: were it was kind of boring and slow, so they
- 29:37Speaker 2: I think they were trying to get numbers to be
- 29:39Speaker 2: up on screens. I saw Moan Ryan pitch when I
- 29:42Speaker 2: was a kid. I saw Pedro Martinez pitch when I
- 29:44Speaker 2: was a kid, and then I seen I coached a
- 29:47Speaker 2: lot of kids who threw a hundred, and I was like,
- 29:49Speaker 2: that's not one hundred. You know, they're very different. You
- 29:54Speaker 2: can hear the sound of something like when Billy Wagner
- 29:55Speaker 2: threw you were like, oh man, that's that's hard. When
- 29:57Speaker 2: Pagro three you're like, wow, you know Nolan Ryan Clemmens like,
- 30:02Speaker 2: and then I said, guy guys like Linscombe and Kane
- 30:05Speaker 2: and you know, and the Bumgardner these guys and they
- 30:08Speaker 2: you know, same thing. They I just think sometimes like
- 30:11Speaker 2: Jason smid had I think unbelievable fastball. I think he
- 30:14Speaker 2: was one of the hardest guys I've seen throw the ball.
- 30:16Speaker 2: And then you know, some guys do heavy balls come
- 30:18Speaker 2: through like light balls, you know, like I threw a sinker.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I think a slider. I still think they pitched like
- 30:24Speaker 2: if you watch college or pros, it's like sixty seven
- 30:27Speaker 2: percent of the time now sliders. I was about eighty
- 30:29Speaker 2: five percent of the time sliders. But they can't hit it.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Just keep throwing it. That's what the Ruster woul tell me.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Never get beat with your You always told me, don't
- 30:36Speaker 2: get beat with your worst pitch. You know. He's like,
- 30:38Speaker 2: why would you throw your fastball and get beat with
- 30:39Speaker 2: it when you can keep throwing your sliders. So that's
- 30:42Speaker 2: that's basically what you did. You want what you went
- 30:43Speaker 2: to the money as much as you could. I wasn't
- 30:45Speaker 2: in the game where it was like, oh, let's just
- 30:47Speaker 2: see what happens here, you know. And I just think
- 30:50Speaker 2: that today's generation, they're so much powerful, they're strong. I
- 30:53Speaker 2: think they do some of the kids do through. I
- 30:54Speaker 2: think Paul Skans throws a beautiful takeof while he's just
- 30:58Speaker 2: so smooth and effortless. He's like Rick Ankiel had the
- 31:01Speaker 2: best fastball I've probably ever seen. From my eyes, it
- 31:07Speaker 2: was unbelievable. I just explode it out of his hand
- 31:09Speaker 2: and it just got on you and his breaking ball
- 31:12Speaker 2: just snapped off the table. I mean, unfortunately he never
- 31:15Speaker 2: got the really pan out the way we wanted to
- 31:18Speaker 2: see it. I thought this kid was going to be
- 31:20Speaker 2: a sure blooded like Steve Carlton, and you know, unfortunately
- 31:24Speaker 2: he became an outfielder and could hit. So he took
- 31:28Speaker 2: me in the upper tank. It the old bush, so
- 31:30Speaker 2: I can't say much about it.
- 31:31Speaker 1: So one of the one of the best athletes in
- 31:34Speaker 1: baseball history. That guy just reinvented himself. Kleiner, I got
- 31:41Speaker 1: to tell you, it was a pleasure talking to you
- 31:44Speaker 1: and catching up. You've always been a good dude. I
- 31:46Speaker 1: knew this would be a good episode and you made
- 31:48Speaker 1: it so, so thank you for coming on.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Hey, you're still a good liar. I appreciate it. I
- 31:53Speaker 2: appreciate it.
- 31:54Speaker 1: That's gonna do it for this edition of Guarding Territory.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Thank you, Kleiner. We'll see you for the next on
- 32:00Speaker 1: the Battle, Birds on the Bat, Birds on the Bat,
- 32:03Speaker 1: and hopefully that episode won't sup.
- 32:08Speaker 2: H m hmmm mmm.
