- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Welcome inside this episode of This Week in Hockey East.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: I'm Bridget Crew here with Eric Galanti.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: We have a lot to talk about this week.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: We had some international hockey in the area that we will get to.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: And we also have some important games on Nessen that will determine who finishes first on the women's side in Hockey East and a lot of implications for the pairwise and the standings on both sides.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: But Eric, we're going to start out with our Friday night Hockey East game, Yukon at Maine.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: You'll be up there up for that one.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it'll be a lot of fun.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: We just were up at Alphonse to see Maine and New Hampshire last Saturday for that two-game series, and we'll be down at UConn.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: And you know, the flex scheduling that we talked about, it allows us to see the two teams who are tied for first in Hockey East over the next two weeks, Maine this week and Boston College at home next week.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: But let's start with this Maine team.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: First of all, go to Alphont if you haven't been to Alphont.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: My first time.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: It was amazing, totally lived up to the hype.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: It was awesome in every way.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: And you wonder if Maine kind of woke up.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: And that's crazy to say because they're tied for first.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: They've been tied for first.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: They haven't lost very much.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: But they've been doing it without scoring many goals.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: They actually had not scored more than three goals in the entire second half of the season.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: And then Saturday night they erupted for four goals in the third period alone to beat their rivals.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Josh Nadeau was part of that.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: He had four points in the third period.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: He's our night shift all academic standout for accomplishing that.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: So, yes, Albin Boy has been so good.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: And yes, Albin Boy is going to continue to be so good.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: I don't think there's any surprise there.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: And, you know, we're going to talk over the next couple of weeks who's your hockey's goalie of the year, Alban Boy or Jacob Fowler.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: They basically have identical numbers.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: That's going to be an interesting conversation.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: But the fact that if you can add that with the offense that we, I think we all know is in there for Maine.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: It just, you know, they've been winning two, one, three, two games here recently.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: That really creates uh something that, you know, teams are going to fear having to play that down the stretch of the season.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: You know, part of it has been the power play has struggled.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: It's crazy.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: Maine is 0 for their last 27 on the power play.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: It feels impossible considering how well they started.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: They did score moments after their last power play expired in the third period on Saturday, but so if they could bring that up, because it's not for a lack of chances, but if they could bring that up, if maybe that third period kind of leads to something here, and you combine it with Boya, that really could create something.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: And we'll see.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: It's hard to believe, but Maine has not won the regular season in hockey since 1995.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: They've won national championships since then, they've won hockey tournaments since then, they've you know gone to the NCAA tournament since then.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: They have not been a regular season champ since 1995 when they were a co-champ with BU.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: So five games left.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: Maine and Boston College.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: Maine will have this game at UConn, then two at home next week against Vermont, and two on the road at UMass, BC with two at Vermont this weekend, two at a home and home with New Hampshire, and then one at home against Merrimack the final weekend.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: So we'll see what happens.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: It'll be really interesting.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: But I think this main team might be at a point where they're ready to explode with how well they played in the third period on Saturday night.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and they're a lock to make the NCAA tournament this year.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: And even though the power play hasn't scored, I was broadcasting the PC main series uh a few weeks ago, and their power play movement was great.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Like they had a lot of nice, they had a lot of nice rotation.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: I I thought that it's just a matter of time before they score.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: And I was very impressed with Alvin Boya, who is one of the finalists for the Mike Richter Award for National Goalie of the Year.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: So definitely some guys to pay attention to, and we'll get to some other guys in this series that could have an impact and maybe already have had an impact when they played the first time.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: So to look into the Yukon side of things, they had a tale of two different seasons, really.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: If you look at where they were before the new year, eight, eight, and one up until December 29th.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: And then uh they lose that game to Wisconsin.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: But since then, they've been really solid, really consistent, eight, two, and two since that point in the season.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: And right now they're set up for their first ever bid into the NCAA tournament, which I was talking to you about before this.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: I can't believe they feel like a team that is always right there.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: I didn't realize that they had never made it because they've come so close in the past.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: And it just feels like the way that this team is built and the way that they've been able to play together and how much it seems like they genuinely like to be together and have fun playing together.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: It seems like this team is built culturally as a team that could succeed in the NCAA tournament right now.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Looks like they'll be in.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: And actually, a lot of hockey East teams, as of right now, look like they'll be in.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Um, when you look at some of the players that could impact the series, and this is a guy that had four goals last time that these two teams matched up.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Joey Muldowney, uh, four goals in the win.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: And Ark, take us through some of the other guys that we might see some production and important minutes from.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that Muldowney four-goal game, that was the Friday night 4-2 win for UConn.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: They had just swept New Hampshire, and uh they had just, I think they had just swept Lowell as well.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: And, you know, we were okay, there's uh impressive here.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: It was New Hampshire, I beg your pardon.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Can they keep doing it?
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: And then they go up to Maine, they win that Friday game, and they get the point on Saturday because of the tie.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: Maine won the extra point in the shootout, but it was Maldowney's four goals on that Friday night.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: His streak from there, he had a hat trick again last Wednesday against Anchorage.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: He scored in four games in a row.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: He has seven goals in the last four games.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Since December 28th, so the second half of the season, he has 15 goals and 22 points in 13 games.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: It's remarkable how good he's been.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: Um, you look at guys like Jake Percival, he had a huge goal in that main series.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: You look at guys like Hudson Chandor, who scored the tying goal and the game-winning goal in overtime against Lowell two weekends in a row when Yukon bounced back after losing the Friday game to UMass.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: And I think that's the thing that stands out, right?
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: That bounce back game against Lowell last week.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: And then they play, or two weeks ago now, I should say.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: They play that Wednesday game against Anchorage.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: You and I have talked about it.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: We all understand, hey, this is a pairwise red flag if you lose this game.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: But I was really impressed how Mike Kavanaugh said, yeah, we talked about that.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: We didn't shy away from how important that was, that it was sort of the last landmine on the schedule.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: And I like that they did that, right?
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: Because it it speaks to a team that's confident enough to understand where they are and to not have to tiptoe around it.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: And because if they get that win, they're basically locked for the NCAA tournament now.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: So um it should be a really interesting matchup.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: Seeding's gonna be huge.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Maine trying to get first, UConn trying to hold on to that first round bye.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: We'll talk about seeding a little bit later as we go through.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: But big time series, just the one-off this weekend, Friday night at the Toscano Family Ice Forum.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: UConn and Maine will bring you that top 15 matchup right here on Nesson.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: We also have Saturday action for you in a crucial seeding series on the final day of the women's regular season.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: We'll talk about that on the other side.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to this week in Hockey East coming up on Saturday.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: It's the final day of the women's regular season, and BU and UConn have been in a battle for first place in Hockey East all season long.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: BU entered this weekend needing just one point to clinch the number one seed.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: UConn needed a perfect weekend to have a chance at that number one seed.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: UConn, though, still needs at least a point to hold off the teams behind them.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: If all goes wrong and they don't get any points this week, there's a world they could drop all the way down to fourth place.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: So the whole weekend matters no matter what happens on Friday for UConn and BU.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Uh this UConn team, which fell victim to Providence last week, this Red Hot Friars team, which we'll talk about a little bit later in our show, against the BU team.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: That boy, it's been impressive how they've just kept on chugging along ever since being pod.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they have, and they're back at Walter Brown with a nice new facility, nice locker rooms and everything.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Uh so they have that home space back for them.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And they've put themselves in a really great position in the final weekend because for a long time, those top four teams on the women's side were neck and neck.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: And BU had always a little bit of separation, but being able to hold on to it by being as consistent as they've been in the second half has been impressive because you, you know, they've just always been able to keep that step ahead.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: And for UConn, because of those losses, both losses last weekend to Providence, they find themselves with still uh everything's in their own hands because this is a head-to-head weekend, right?
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Like this is still within reach for them if they can play a perfect weekend and grab all six points, their first place in Hockey East for the second year in a row.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Um, that would guarantee them home ice for the whole tournament.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: As we know, the championship game will be home ice for them uh no matter if they make it, because it's at Toscano.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: So that is a positive for them.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: And that's what they're hoping to do.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: It's it's also a point of pride to just finish first two years in a row and solidify yourself as you know, a team that can continue to do it, even with the turnover that they had, especially on defense, losing a lot of key older players, grad students.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Um, and you know, they have this goalie tandem that they've ridden.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: And we saw Tia Chan in both games last weekend, and she's been having another great year for her as she comes to a close on her collegiate career.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: But those losses to PC meant that BU is really, they could even play uh, you know, not their best hockey this weekend, as long as they get one point, they're they're in a great position.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: So that that definitely helps them out.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: And obviously, UConn is the only team that's beaten Boston University since that beanpot.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: They beat them a couple weeks ago at BU.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: So, you know, there's also national implications on this game, and it's obviously uh, you know, quality wins that are available for each of these teams' resumes.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: But I want to see where UConn's offense is, right?
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: We've talked a lot about it.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: It had been trending up a little bit for a couple of weeks.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: You know, then we saw just that one-nothing win where they got it done against Holy Cross after beating BU a couple of Saturdays ago.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: But, you know, that top line's been so, so good.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, where is that depth scoring?
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: I think we're gonna, you know, find out.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: We'll see in a really important weekend series.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: So I'm excited to see that.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, you'll be there on Saturday along with Carson Duggan, and we'll see what happens and we'll see if we'll be crowning a champion and where UConn will finish up in these standings.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Should be really interesting.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: There's a lot to talk about along the women's slate because we're not just deciding the number one seed, but we'll tell you about all the scenarios of where teams could finish as we look ahead towards the playoffs when we come back.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to this week in Hockey East.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: It's time to go around Hockeys, presented by Boston Harbor Hotel.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: Let's look at this women's playoff picture.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: Final weekend of the regular season here.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: We told you about the top two teams, the likely top two teams, but there's also three teams going for those final two spots to host a quarterfinal game.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: Only two of these three teams can host, between Providence, Boston College, and Northeastern.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: We were talking even a month ago, I'm not sure we thought Providence was going to be in this conversation, but they are certainly in this conversation.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: They may even be leading this conversation right now.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and depending on what happens in that BU UConn series, they could finish as high as second place, which they've jumped all the way from, you know, the mid-bottom range of the conference to with this incredibly strong second half, winning 12 of their 14 games since the start of the new year.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: They're now in contention for one of the top spots in the conference.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: They're playing for home ice.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: Uh, and not only that, you know, you know, obviously they're they're hot and their goaltender Hopelinski is hot, but at the same time, they've gotten healthier.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: So that's good news for them as well.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: They get Millie Searum back.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: She's an immediate impact in the weekend series with UConn.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: She had suffered an injury, then had gone to play in the Olympic qualifiers for Norway.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Uh, they didn't make it, unfortunately, but she joins Providence again and is on fire.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: And she actually scored against Merrimack in the first meeting between these two teams this season.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Providence finishing out the regular season with a weekend series with Merrimack, who, you know, they've they beat four to one.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: It was it was a game that they dominated for most of it.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: So they got to feel like they're in pretty good position to get that home ice advantage if they can execute the lead that they have so far in the second half.
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're not the only teams in this Boston College and Northeastern quadrant trying to see what can happen.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: And of course, those two wins against UConn really feel like it's momentum.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: Um, so we'll see.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: It's fascinating that Northeastern right now is the team that might be without a home game in the quarterfinals that felt impossible just a month ago.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: Not that they're not capable of winning a round or two on the road.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: So it'll be interesting to see what happens with those three.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: There's also an interesting kind of battle going on between New Hampshire and Maine.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: They enter the weekend separated by just one point for the final opening round by.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: Now, UNH has a home and home with Boston College, so both of those teams need that weekend series.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: Maine will be hosting Holy Cross.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: And I think that's the theme is that really everyone has something to play for.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: Holy Cross has an opportunity to get a home game in the opening round, right?
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: Thanks to wins in three of their last four games.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: They're only one point behind UVM after they swept the Catamounts last week.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: UVM hosts Northeastern.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: Holy Cross, as we said, will play Maine.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's really impressive how Holy Cross is in this position.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: And getting a potential opening round home game could be another big step for this program.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we we saw them get their first win last year, but that was not in a home game.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Their first win in a Hockey East tournament game came at BU at Walter Brown.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: So I'm sure they would love to host for the first time in that program's history.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: And they really do feel like they've gained ground uh on the rest of the teams in terms of uh talent, in terms of being able to beat any team on the women's side of Hockey East, now that they've gotten their program a few years past uh coming in and joining the conference and being a D1 team.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Uh it's it's been a building process for them, and they're starting to really be in the picture of part of this conference that is from top to bottom really deep.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: So for them, uh it'll be an interesting final end of the weekend.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: And when you look at uh our co-Jersey Mike's a sub-above player of the week, Reagan Chadwick scored both uh in both games.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Abby Hornung stopped 52 of 53 shots for Holy Cross.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: And so those two uh both helping their teams get into the into that good positioning in the playoffs potentially with being able to host.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: So there's a lot on the line on the women's side in this final weekend.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: There's a lot on the line on the men's side as well, with just three weekends to go.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: We'll tell you all about that when we come back.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: It's time to go around Hockey East on the men's side.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Take a look at some of the important matchups this weekend and this segment brought to you by Boston Children's Hospital, official children's hospital of Hockey East.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Well, we want to start looking at UMass.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: This is a team that has had a really good stretch as of late.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: And as of right now, of this recording, they're just inside the pairwise cut.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: So this could be another potential Hockey East team that gets into the NCAA tournament uh with an at-large bid because of a good finish if they can continue to play that way.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: And one of the players on that team that's been doing really well all season, but we'll highlight him now as well.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Cole O'Hara, our service credit union scoring leader.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: He had the game-winning goal on Friday and an assist, then scored another goal on Saturday as well.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: He's a guy that maybe we haven't talked about enough because he has been up towards the top of Hockey East in a lot of scoring categories for most of the season.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Right now, he's the Hockey East leader in points with 42, and he's tied for third nationally.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: That is impressive numbers that he's been putting up.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: And he's a guy to lean on.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: They have other guys like I dar Suniev, the great offensive threat as well.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: So that top six, I would say is really deep and really a lot of good, powerful offensive players.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and Suniev back after being injured.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: He came back for the BC weekend.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: And we told you if UMass won Friday, not even Saturday, but one Friday, they'd be in the NCAA tournament, and that's still where they find themselves right now.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: In terms of the picture of Hockey East as well, UMass is eight right now.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: They have games in hand against the four teams in front of them.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: So they have a chance to join this conversation of right now, at least, what is seeds four through seven.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: It's kind of crazy, but you know, you have this group with Lowell at the four seed right now, UConn five, Merrimack at six, and Providence at seven.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: Those four teams are separated by just two points.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: So there's a lot still to determine here.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: And remember, let's just take two, oh, those four teams, it could become a fifth if UMass gets a win in their game in hand, but only two of those teams get a buy from the opening round.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: And when all of these teams are such intertwined in the pairwise as well, we don't really know whether an extra game would be a positive or a negative to get an opening round game potentially.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: So it'll be really interesting to see.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: But I think that everyone is thinking obviously top four, but even more so top five, right?
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: You don't want to risk having another loss on your resume earlier on than you need to.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: So getting in the top five, it's gonna be fascinating.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: Lowell's there right now.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: UConn has been there in the top four quite a bit this year.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: And, you know, Merrimack continues to hang around as well.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: And then, you know, this Providence team finally got a big win last week, maybe their biggest of the year against BU.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was a huge home win.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: I would say this is a team in Providence that at Schneider has struggled.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: They've they've had some really great road games uh at home in the first half of the season, in their non-conference schedules, they had some great weekends at home.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: But against Hockey East opponents, they've struggled a little bit.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: And in particular, against BU.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: This was actually their first win on Friday night uh since 2019 against BU at Schneider Arena.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: So you gotta go back uh quite a ways for them to have had home success against the Terriers.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: And for them, it was a big offensive outburst.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: This is a Providence team that a lot of times is you see them as a defensive team.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: They don't score a lot, they don't give up a lot.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Well, six goals for them again and a six-three win.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: They ended up chasing Mikhail Jaegerov, who has been incredible.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: He hadn't given up more than two goals up to that point in his, you know, the beginning of his collegiate career here in the second half.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: And he gets chased after the game gets to be 4-1.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: He lets in a fourth goal.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: They put Metro Curan back in.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: And for PC, they're also happy that they got Trevor Connolly back and he made an immediate impact.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: He scored the first goal of the game for the Friars.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: He was a big missing piece for this Fryers power play, as well as in overtime.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: He's a threat three on three.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: He would have been great to have in the shootouts, which the Fryers have had a few of recently when he was absent from the lineup.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: So that's all good news for them.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: But for BU, they were able to respond in the Saturday game.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: They came back.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: They got a shutout from Mikely Agorov.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: He made 30 saves.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: It was a three to nothing win.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: So this ends up being a weekend split, but I do think that it's important to highlight Providence as one of those middle teams in that cluster that's not separated by much because they could really that whole pack could go either way.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: It's a really important end of the season for them.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: And they remain in the top 10 of the pairwise.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: So uh that has been that's been somewhere they've been most of the season.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: And there's no more non-conference now, right?
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: Hockey's, by the way, set their all-time non-conference record a 715 win percentage.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: That beats their previous high of 705 from 2002 and 2003.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: So that's locked in.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, and now it's just how these teams kind of fall against each other.
- 20:15SPEAKER_02: It'll be interesting to see.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, when we come back, we'll take some short shifts and take a look at the Four Nations tournament and how many hockey players were involved.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: We'll be back in a minute.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to our show.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Time to take some short shifts presented by the shift group, helping former athletes and veterans become elite business professionals.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: Uh this week, the last two weeks, the hockey world has kind of been consumed by this Four Nations tournament, which was such a smashing success in this first ever edition of this tournament.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: The semis and the excuse me, the last group of round robin games and the final were at TD Garden this year.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: Bridget, you got to be there for the games in Boston, which featured a number of Hockey East alums, but uh just how special was it getting a chance to be there for and having this tournament played in Boston?
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was great to see them back in the area.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: And and I got the sense from talking to a few of the players that played in New England and played for Hockey East, that it was special for them to have this, what they all viewed as a really important moment in their careers.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: So this tournament meant a lot to a lot of people.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: And for it to be in Boston, uh, guys like Jack Eichel, who used to play at BU, Kale McCarr from UMass, Adam Fox all spoke highly of being able to be back at TD Garden somewhere that they enjoyed playing.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: Um, and Kale McCarr, in particular, when I talked to him, uh, he said that he thought that Boston was the perfect US city for this tournament to come to a conclusion at.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: He thought that the crowd was great.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: Uh, and it was just a good moment in a comfortable place for a lot of these guys who have played games at TD Garden when they were here playing for Hockey East.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: And speaking of guys coming back to the area, uh, we saw both.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Macklin Salerini and Lane Hudson visiting and celebrating with Boston University as they hoisted the Beanpot Championship Trophy last week.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: Bridget, you got an opportunity to sit down with Lane Hudson and ask some of those questions about what it meant to be back, celebrating with his BU teammates, and to be back in the hockeys region.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: So uh Bridget had an opportunity to sit down with Lane and we'll check that out right now.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: I'm Bridget Prue here with Lane Hudson.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Lane, it's nice to talk to you.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: You've been around Boston for a little while now.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: You came back, you got the Four Nations break, and you decided to come back and watch your brothers play in the bean pot.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: Seemed like a good decision because you guys got a really happy ending Monday.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh just come here for the break.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: It's been nice.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: Nice to just kind of get away from uh from the game a little bit, but also come watch my brothers play the game.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: So it's it's been special and you know, obviously to win the beanpot it's pretty cool.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: And we saw clips of you waving the flag up in the student section, and I mean obviously you you're used to being on the ice for that.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: Was it different than you expected?
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: Uh honestly, I did it for uh for a couple of the women's games uh throughout my two years there, so I knew what I was getting into, and uh, you know, it's pretty it was pretty funny.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I feel like the you it must have been extra hyped up because they knew you and Macklin were there, and then obviously you guys have gone on to have success in the NHL already.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: And the two of you probably in the race for rookie of the year in the NHL.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: Is that something you two joke about?
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: No, not too much.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: Uh I mean he's obviously having an unbelievable year, but uh honestly we just kind of catch up, talk about you know what it's like, you know, his lifestyle in San Jose and what it's like for me in uh Montreal.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: So it's been cool and uh you know we play each other soon again, so it's uh it's just been so fun.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and for for you, you're you know, you're up in Montreal.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: He's in the warm, you're in the cold, like like we are in Boston.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: But now that this is your first full season in Montreal, are you kind of settled in more?
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I feel like I'm you know kind of figuring it out as I go, and you know, I still have so much to learn, so uh the excitement's still there, just uh do it every night, and you know, I still look forward to learning so much more.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and for you, I mean, do you have your own apartment now?
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: You you're kind of living on your own.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, my mom's with me, so it's it's pretty nice having her there, but okay.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: I'm in Montreal, it's just you know me and her, so it's been fun.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's awesome.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: I was gonna ask if you had to learn how to cook, but it sounds like you got a good situation up there for you.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, really good.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: Because I know that's that's a struggle for some of the younger guys.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: I'm like, okay, I all I know how to do is cook ramen, but no, that's you got a great deal up there.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Now, for for your whole family coming back this week to to get a chance to to see you guys all in the same place at the same time.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Is that something that's been rare over the past few years with you guys kind of all I mean, when you were at B, you you were together, but now that you're kind of spreading out?
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's been rare.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, with me and Quinn at BU, uh, my younger brother who's now with BU Cole, who's been at the national team.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, it's been it's been tough to get us all in the same spot.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Even my youngest brother, Lars, he's had games, so uh to give us get us all together for that bean pot game and for them to win it was uh it was uh honestly something I'll never forget.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: You're one of how many?
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: Uh four.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: One of four, okay.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: It's a lot of brothers.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: So for you, taking what you learned at BU to the next level, to Montreal.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: We talked to Jay Pandolffel this week.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: He said uh, you know, there's certain things that are foundational that he likes to teach guys to make it to the NHL that translate.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: What are some of the things that he worked on with you to try to help you get to that level?
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think just for me it was understanding uh the game, uh like the game within the game, you know, knowing when to go, when not to go, and still obviously building on that in uh the NHL and trying to learn that, but just knowing what's needed at certain times and you know, whether you gotta put a puck in or you gotta possess a puck, uh whatever it may be.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: But uh at the college level, it's super competitive, and you know, hockey east is as competitive as it's ever been, so you know it's just uh it was a hard league to play in, but it was so fun just learning uh what each night held and how every game was different.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so is Hockey East for people who are thinking about choosing a team like the was Hockey East a good place to kind of perfect your game or at least polish your game before you head to the NHL?
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's the perfect spot.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, you're a young guy who uh wants to play play college, you gotta be thinking hockey yeast.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, you stay in your own bed for a good majority of your the games you play, the road games are so close, all the teams are close together, so it's uh it makes it pretty easy to just kind of relax and really just dial in on hockey and maybe school a little bit too.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a little bit.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Uh that's that's one thing that student athletes have to try to find the balance for, right?
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: But uh it's great to start in hockey east, um, and it's great to have you with us.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: So thank you for taking some time and you know good luck to your brothers.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: And I hope you have a great finish to your NHL season this year.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: Thanks so much for joining us for another edition of This Week in Hockey East for Bridget Prue.
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: I'm Eric Galante.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: Coming up next on Nessen, it's Friday Night Hockey East on Nessen live from Toscano Family Ice Forum as UConn plays host to me.
