- 0:54I'm so happy. This is like the win that we
- 0:56need. All right, the first story that
- 0:58I have for you guys is I'm going to break down the conversation
- 1:02around Sephora's Christmas ad that's featuring Mariah Carey
- 1:06and the backlash that they are receiving for this ad being
- 1:10quote UN quote out of touch. So on November 1st, Mariah Carey
- 1:13announced it was officially the holiday season with a new ad for
- 1:17Sephora. And consumers are not loving the
- 1:21ad, which has already surpassed over 100 million views on TikTok
- 1:26shows the singer catching a mischievous elf, played by Billy
- 1:30Eichner, sneaking off with a luxury beauty products from
- 1:33Sephora. Bad news, Mariah Carey, the
- 1:35elves are striking this year. Elf revenge for putting us
- 1:38through holiday hell. Santa's help her quit.
- 1:41I'm pawning all this so I can afford elf therapy.
- 1:43Christmas, it's cancelled. So when he says I'm pawning all
- 1:46of this, it's luxury makeup from Sephora.
- 1:49And then Mariah Carey turns him into a snowman before making her
- 1:53signature defrosting entrance, which is obviously a nod to her
- 1:57viral holiday meme. Viewers were quick to draw
- 2:00parallels between the Elfs strike storyline and what is
- 2:04currently going on in the labor market around the world, and
- 2:08have accused the ad of making fun of workers demanding fair
- 2:11pay and better conditions. Creator Regina George Her video
- 2:15has gone fairly viral for this criticism.
- 2:18I don't. Know about you, but the American
- 2:19people have been treated pretty badly this past year, so it
- 2:24feels like there's a direct correlation to current times and
- 2:28this dialogue. He's resorting to stealing so he
- 2:32can afford healthcare. Marketing is an intentional
- 2:35business. You want to build something that
- 2:38resonates with the masses and the general public, something
- 2:40that attracts all kinds of age groups, especially in a
- 2:44commercial where it's Mariah Carey.
- 2:47And the message that I received from those few lines is that he
- 2:52works for an employer who lives in a gigantic mansion, who
- 2:57doesn't pay a livable wage and also does not want to provide
- 3:01healthcare. Does that sound familiar?
- 3:04So the general sentiment from people who feel uneasy about the
- 3:07ad is that it seems like Sephora is mocking the working class and
- 3:11making fun of boycotting with the line about canceling
- 3:14Christmas. A lot of people have also noted
- 3:16that Sephora, or at least a lot of brands sold at Sephora, are
- 3:21on the boycott list, so they believe this ad could be a
- 3:25response to that. People feel like this ad is
- 3:27mocking consumers, especially American consumers, while
- 3:31simultaneously asking for our money.
- 3:34And I want to note, too, there are, of course, people who feel
- 3:37like it's not that deep. This is just a fun holiday ad.
- 3:41You know, these criticisms are reaching.
- 3:43There's of course, that camp as well.
- 3:44But I'm here to specifically talk about why people have an
- 3:47issue with the ad. So yeah, I feel like if they
- 3:49released this ad 10 years ago, it would have popped the fuck
- 3:54off. But ten years ago was a very
- 3:57different time. I believe that Sephora thought
- 4:00that by tapping into youth zeitgeist culture, it would land
- 4:04maybe in the way that, like, satire lands.
- 4:07Like, I do believe that this ad is in response to the boycott.
- 4:11I agree with people there, and I believe it's in response to
- 4:14everyone's economic stress and all of that.
- 4:16But more than anything, I think that this is an effort from
- 4:19Sephora to tap younger consumers by reflecting themselves back to
- 4:23them almost in like a referential humor type of way.
- 4:27Because even though obviously Mariah Carey is not Gen.
- 4:29ZI feel like the iconicness of Mariah Carey is actually very
- 4:33Gen. Z in terms of like pop culture
- 4:36and the holiday season. She has had quite the
- 4:38Renaissance just in the last few years.
- 4:40And TikTok has played a big role in that.
- 4:42And I think the elf being like, I'm going to go on strike.
- 4:45I need therapy. Like, I really do think that
- 4:47that was them being like, Oh my God, this will resonate with
- 4:50Gen. Z.
- 4:51They love therapy. They'll think this is so funny.
- 4:53This is so them. I think they thought that this
- 4:56would get clipped like all over TikTok that people would use
- 4:59this as sounds like the Venn diagram of young people who care
- 5:04about luxury makeup and young people who care about pop
- 5:07culture is probably more a circle than anything.
- 5:10But I think that this ad aside from being super tone deaf and I
- 5:15completely agree with a lot of the criticisms.
- 5:17It is very dated. It gives me like, hello fellow
- 5:20kids. Like that's what this gives me.
- 5:23That being said, there are also a lot of people who believe that
- 5:26it was intentionally a counter marketing campaign, almost like
- 5:30the American Eagle campaign where they put out an ad where
- 5:33they knew it would be a bit edgy and it wouldn't land with
- 5:36everyone. And they were OK with that.
- 5:38Like they were making it clear who they want their audience to
- 5:41be. And I don't know if I totally
- 5:42agree with that because we know that makeup is typically
- 5:45recession proof because when people can't afford other
- 5:48luxuries, they will buy like, a nice lipstick.
- 5:51Because in theory, in the scheme of things, it's cheaper to spend
- 5:55$30 on a lipstick than to buy a new pair of jeans or to go on a
- 5:59holiday or whatever, like all all the other luxuries that
- 6:01you're having to cut from your life.
- 6:03So yeah, I don't know if I think that they were trying to isolate
- 6:09consumers because makeup tends to actually boom and find like,
- 6:12new consumers amid economic hardship.
- 6:15So I don't know if I totally believe that.
- 6:17It feels more like a Sephora releasing an ad that says like
- 6:20this Christmas, basically fuck your problems, buy expensive
- 6:24makeup like we know you will anyways.
- 6:26And this was intentional knowing that people still do buy
- 6:30expensive makeup in dire times. I've also seen a lot of people
- 6:34say that this is going to backfire from Mariah Carey
- 6:36because they feel like her iconicness around the holidays
- 6:40and like all I want for Christmas is you that has now
- 6:42been tainted because of this ad. I think the reality is like
- 6:45right now, we just live in a time where like you just have to
- 6:48be a bit more careful. Like, brands have to be a bit
- 6:50more considered. They can play with their
- 6:52marketing and be a bit edgier. I mean, you can still be edgy
- 6:55and playful in ways that don't offend people, don't get me
- 6:57wrong. But you know, I think we are
- 6:59living through a very specific moment in time and they need to
- 7:03be incredibly like hyper aware of that.
- 7:06Even though it might not feel fair, even though you know it,
- 7:09it might like stifle their creativity or like whatever the
- 7:12argument could be at the end of the day, like you have to
- 7:15respond to the times. You have to meet your consumers
- 7:18where they're at. And time and time again,
- 7:20consumers are saying, this is where we're at.
- 7:22Please meet us here. Don't go further than this.
- 7:25And brands constantly keep pushing the envelope and going
- 7:30further and just basically being like, fuck you guys.
- 7:33And that's kind of how it feels. The next story that I have for
- 7:35you guys, this might sound like a random one, but I promise
- 7:37there is a greater meaning around stand them culture that
- 7:41I'm going to touch on. So Ariana Grande had a delayed
- 7:44flight which led her to miss the Wicked premiere in Brazil
- 7:48earlier this week. So this is for the Wicked for
- 7:51good, which is the second installment of the Wicked
- 7:54series. So Ariana, Cynthia and other
- 7:57cast members were expected to be in attendance.
- 8:00And while Cynthia made it, Ariana was forced to skip the
- 8:03event. In the lead up to the event,
- 8:05Ariana posted on her Instagram story saying that she wasn't
- 8:07going to make the premiere due to issues with her flight.
- 8:10She said Brazil. I can't believe this is
- 8:11happening and I am beyond devastated to be sending this
- 8:14message. A few hours ago my team and I
- 8:16had to deplane our flight as they had to do maintenance on
- 8:20the plane due to a safety issue and it will not be taking off
- 8:23until 11 AM tomorrow which means I will not be making it in time
- 8:26for the Wicked for good Sao Paulo premiere.
- 8:29My team and Universal have tried every single thing possible to
- 8:31fix this. We've searched every other
- 8:33flight, overnight, early morning, connecting flights,
- 8:36commercial and also private options and absolutely nothing
- 8:39was available or possible that would get us there in time.
- 8:42Even in attempting a private option, there is a permit
- 8:45necessary in order to fly from here that takes time to attain.
- 8:49I'm so heartbroken that I'm unable to be there with you all.
- 8:52We sincerely tried everything we could and I apologize from the
- 8:54bottom of my heart. So yes, of course fans are going
- 8:57to be upset that she's not going to be able to make it.
- 8:59However, Ariana also started receiving threats and a backlash
- 9:04from Stan's which is obviously so inappropriate.
- 9:08Some of whom were mad that she could no longer attend,
- 9:11especially because it may have been kind of like, I guess their
- 9:14only chance to see her given how small slash short her upcoming
- 9:19Eternal Sunshine tour is. She then went on to share
- 9:21another story after receiving this backlash, offering more
- 9:24context about the situation. Quote, please don't wish danger
- 9:27on us. We did everything we could and I
- 9:29promise, assume no one is more upset than I am.
- 9:32I promise. And then she explains kind of
- 9:35her scheduling and how this all happened.
- 9:37The fact that people would think that Ariana Grande, who is the
- 9:41star, I mean, she's one of the biggest stars in the world, but
- 9:43she is like the star of this movie in addition to being a
- 9:46giant star herself. And Wicked would be 1 of
- 9:48Universal's biggest blockbusters coming out.
- 9:51For us to assume that Universal and Ariana Grande's team
- 9:55together wouldn't have been literally going to the ends of
- 9:58the Earth, sparing no expense to get her there if they could is
- 10:03wild. Like of course they did, of
- 10:05course they tried everything. I just think it's such a wild
- 10:09assumption. This is like a prime example of
- 10:12peak standom entitlement. It's so toxic.
- 10:16She does not owe you an explanation of her schedule to
- 10:19show you why she could not make a work obligation.
- 10:22This is work for her at the end of the day as well.
- 10:25The fact that she had to over explain herself at all, it's so
- 10:28disappointing. OK, and the last story that I
- 10:30have for you guys, this is a bit of a short one, but the 20
- 10:34something girlies on TikTok have been doing some sleuthing and
- 10:38they believe that the acquired twins are about to launch a
- 10:41clothing brand called Fifi. So the acquired twins, quote UN
- 10:45quote, are Bridget and Danielle. They are New York City Tik
- 10:48Tokers and this whole like speculation around their
- 10:52clothing brand started because Bridget, she used to go by
- 10:55acquired Style, which is why everyone calls them the acquired
- 10:58twins because acquired style was a much bigger account than
- 11:01Danielle, her twins. But earlier this week, Bridget
- 11:03changed her name on socials to her real name.
- 11:06So she changed it from acquired Style to Bridget.
- 11:08And this got everyone talking and wondering like, why did she
- 11:11do this? I wonder if there's a reason
- 11:13behind it. And then one Internet sleuth,
- 11:16Sam Deless, thinks she figured it out.
- 11:19And she made a video that's going pretty viral.
- 11:21And I. Think she did it because the
- 11:22twins are starting a clothing brand.
- 11:24Here's my proof. I tried to pause and set the
- 11:26right time because it looks like she's wearing pants that say
- 11:29Fifi on the butt, which would be their brand.
- 11:31So I went and looked that up in the US Trademark Office and that
- 11:35was filed as a trademark at the end of July and it's filed for
- 11:38apparel and online retail services.
- 11:41So then I just to double check I went and looked for the brand
- 11:45and they both follow this page that says coming.
- 11:48Soon, so there are now some screenshots floating around on
- 11:51TikTok that people have taken from their videos where it looks
- 11:54like they're possibly wearing this clothing brand and it looks
- 11:58very 2000s inspired, which is fun.
- 12:01Like I think they're still going to be elements of Y2K that pop
- 12:04up in trending pieces. But the actual kind of
- 12:06renaissance, like the nostalgia of it.
- 12:08I feel like we've kind of passed it a little bit, but we'll see.
- 12:11These girls are super influential, so I'm interested
- 12:14to see if they're able to sell at a clothing line.
- 12:16Anyways guys, that's it for many scrolls today, a bit of a
- 12:18shorter 1 today, but I will have an episode for you guys
- 12:21tomorrow, a Friday mini scroll. So as always, Please remember to
- 12:25rate, review, and subscribe. I love you guys and I will talk
- 12:27to you tomorrow. Bye.
