- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukon Football Coaches Show with Jim Moraw
- 0:03Speaker 1: Mike Crispino. It's Ball State at the Rent this weekend.
- 0:08Speaker 1: On Saturday, three thirty kicks and that means twelve thirty
- 0:12Speaker 1: we'll get the show of rolling at the Clota Farms
- 0:17Speaker 1: doghouse that's outside the gate. And if you get to
- 0:19Speaker 1: the games and your tailgateing, come on over and watch
- 0:22Speaker 1: when the team comes in. Because when they come in,
- 0:25Speaker 1: the band is rocking and rolling, the cheerleaders. It's a
- 0:28Speaker 1: great entrance to that stadium. So that's part of the
- 0:31Speaker 1: pageantry of being at the stadium for Yukon football game.
- 0:34Speaker 2: So it's Ball State Jim.
- 0:37Speaker 1: This team one and two, but they had a rugged
- 0:40Speaker 1: schedule early at Purdue got shut out thirty one to nothing.
- 0:44Speaker 1: At Auburn got beat forty two three. They got back
- 0:47Speaker 1: on track a little but beating New Hampshire. When you
- 0:51Speaker 1: see a team like this is a MAC team, You're
- 0:53Speaker 1: going to face two of them back to back here,
- 0:55Speaker 1: You're going to Buffalo the following week. What is the
- 0:58Speaker 1: expectations you You've seen them one time a few years back,
- 1:02Speaker 1: but this is a team that I'm sure is looking
- 1:05Speaker 1: to make a statement by coming here to the rent
- 1:07Speaker 1: and doing some damage.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10Speaker 3: I can't worry about their motivation. I can worry about
- 1:13Speaker 3: their talent and their scheme and all that.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I'm impressed with them.
- 1:18Speaker 3: You mentioned, you know they played a big team, big
- 1:20Speaker 3: ten team and an SEC team, so they're battle tested.
- 1:26Speaker 3: You know, we played them a couple of years ago
- 1:27Speaker 3: as a different staff, a different team. You know, we've
- 1:30Speaker 3: got three games of film on on their offense really
- 1:33Speaker 3: working together. Their defense was the same coordinators they had
- 1:37Speaker 3: last year who've been with the head coach previously, so
- 1:41Speaker 3: you know, we have things that we can look at.
- 1:44Speaker 3: You know, they when you come off of a game
- 1:47Speaker 3: like we had defensively the other day, and a quarterback
- 1:50Speaker 3: like the kid from from Delaware Menische I think I
- 1:55Speaker 3: say his name right in the success he had And
- 1:58Speaker 3: then you go and you see this kyok Kelly who's
- 2:01Speaker 3: a runner. You go, damn, you know, here we go.
- 2:04Speaker 3: But they're a town of team.
- 2:06Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I like their running back Quay Ashley, who's also the returner.
- 2:10Speaker 3: He's a good player. Like I mentioned, they moved their
- 2:12Speaker 3: quarterback from defense to offense they believe last year, and
- 2:17Speaker 3: he's a guy who's very very athletic, very strong. He's
- 2:20Speaker 3: played some receiver, he's played some running back. Now he's
- 2:22Speaker 3: playing quarterback. You know, they're they're solid up front, they're
- 2:26Speaker 3: big upfront. Shoot their starting left tackle six ten three eighteen.
- 2:30Speaker 3: You know, so they're they're a big football team offensive
- 2:33Speaker 3: and then defensively, you know, they're very very sound. We
- 2:36Speaker 3: know a couple of players, you know, Alfred Chair who
- 2:39Speaker 3: was with us last year as they're leading tackler. Nate
- 2:42Speaker 3: Warrez who was with US two years ago, is they're
- 2:45Speaker 3: leading sacker with three and a half sacks. You know,
- 2:47Speaker 3: those guys are having a lot of success. But they
- 2:49Speaker 3: play they crowded the line of scrimmage. They're physical, they
- 2:53Speaker 3: play square, they use their hands, they get off blocks,
- 2:55Speaker 3: they tackle, they run. You know, it's it's I guess
- 3:00Speaker 3: if you know what people would think of the MAC.
- 3:02Speaker 2: You know, this is a microcosmo.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I mean, big, tough, physical, strong, midwestern, hard playing football team.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely respect every opponent. Nine tackles for losses, seven
- 3:17Speaker 1: breakups in the secondary, got my attention.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Their sacks got mine. See they're one of the time, yeah,
- 3:23Speaker 3: right in the country. You know, Like I mean, they
- 3:26Speaker 3: can rush the passers. So we've got to, you know,
- 3:28Speaker 3: we got to stay out of situations where Nate and
- 3:31Speaker 3: they got this kid.
- 3:32Speaker 2: He wears number thirty one.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Dwan eccols and guys can create some some havoc on
- 3:39Speaker 3: the edge there.
- 3:41Speaker 1: And their secondary. You're getting back to them for a
- 3:43Speaker 1: second with all those breakups. Jamaald Harmon is one guy.
- 3:49Speaker 1: His dad played football at Ball State. He wears number ten.
- 3:52Speaker 1: He's back there. Jackson Wigold is an academic All Mac
- 3:57Speaker 1: guy for the last couple of years. He's more of
- 3:59Speaker 1: a linebacker type number eighteen. But they're very active in
- 4:02Speaker 1: the in the seams of defensively in the secondary. It
- 4:05Speaker 1: looks like to me in the little I've seen of them.
- 4:08Speaker 1: So you know, Joe Finiano, put yourself on his shoes
- 4:11Speaker 1: for a second. Is he going to be looking a
- 4:15Speaker 1: little bit differently at the way this team plays past
- 4:18Speaker 1: defense back there?
- 4:19Speaker 2: I don't know, you know what, Mike, So.
- 4:24Speaker 3: You know you love a quarterback that's that's a good
- 4:27Speaker 3: decision maker, and part of being a good decision makers
- 4:30Speaker 3: recognizing coverage quickly and then making the right decision in
- 4:35Speaker 3: terms of where you want.
- 4:36Speaker 2: To go with the football. And fortunately for us. We've
- 4:38Speaker 2: got a guy that.
- 4:41Speaker 3: He's done it a lot, and he is a good
- 4:43Speaker 3: decision maker and he is smart, and you know they're
- 4:45Speaker 3: going to have coverage variations that he's going to have
- 4:47Speaker 3: to try to decipher very very quickly. They do a
- 4:50Speaker 3: really nice job of disguising their stuff. They'll make you know,
- 4:53Speaker 3: things all look the same and play different different concepts
- 4:56Speaker 3: out of it.
- 4:56Speaker 2: So it's not easy. So we you know, we've just
- 5:00Speaker 2: got to We've got to.
- 5:02Speaker 3: It's a it's a it's a it's a cliche as
- 5:04Speaker 3: old as time, but we got to take what the
- 5:06Speaker 3: defense gives us in the passing game, you know, because
- 5:09Speaker 3: there's a strength and there's a weakness in every coverage
- 5:12Speaker 3: that anyone plays, that we play or anyone else plays,
- 5:15Speaker 3: and you've got to try to as quickly as you
- 5:18Speaker 3: can find out where you know, where the maybe the
- 5:21Speaker 3: weaker part of that coverage concept is and and try
- 5:24Speaker 3: to attack it. And that's not that's not just against
- 5:28Speaker 3: ball State, that's against anybody.
- 5:30Speaker 2: So you know, we've got a quarterback that's.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Got good vision, he's got some experience, and you just
- 5:36Speaker 3: count on him to make the right decisions.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You know. The Huskies.
- 5:39Speaker 1: We talked about the receiving core of being a talented
- 5:42Speaker 1: and a great variety of the tight ends. We haven't
- 5:45Speaker 1: talked about the running backs catching the ball out of
- 5:46Speaker 1: the backfield as well. For Joe Finnano, that's a nice
- 5:49Speaker 1: checkdown option to have. I would think in a game
- 5:52Speaker 1: like this, you got Victor Rose who can catch the
- 5:54Speaker 1: ball and get your yardage. Obviously, Cam Edwards, You've got
- 5:58Speaker 1: two guys that are very talent in that category. I'm
- 6:02Speaker 1: guessing you might see a little bit of that maybe
- 6:04Speaker 1: coming up on Saturday.
- 6:06Speaker 3: You know, we try to involve our our running backs
- 6:09Speaker 3: in our past game as obviously, as you said, as
- 6:12Speaker 3: checkdown guys, but also as you know, guys that are
- 6:14Speaker 3: primary you know, you saw against Syracuse on the third
- 6:17Speaker 3: and one, Cam get down the sideline for a first down.
- 6:21Speaker 2: You know, so you've seen Mel, you know, get some
- 6:24Speaker 2: things done.
- 6:24Speaker 3: We have a lot of confidence in our guys coming
- 6:26Speaker 3: out of the backfield and catching the ball, whether it's
- 6:28Speaker 3: in a designed route or in a checkdown category.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Like you said, so if.
- 6:32Speaker 3: They're going to take things away deep or you know,
- 6:35Speaker 3: take our outside guys away, when that's where tight ends
- 6:37Speaker 3: have to come into play.
- 6:38Speaker 2: And that's where our backs have to come into play.
- 6:39Speaker 3: And you can't be afraid to check it down and
- 6:42Speaker 3: get it to Cam or get it to Victor and
- 6:44Speaker 3: let them turn up and get the yards that they
- 6:46Speaker 3: can get.
- 6:47Speaker 1: All right, a few final thoughts with Jim Moore coming up.
- 6:49Speaker 1: In a moment, we take a time out. This is
- 6:52Speaker 1: the Yukon Football Coaches Show on lear Field.
