- 0:00Let me ask you this, what would you do if you were in my shoes?
- 0:04What would you have said?
- 0:06I was a new priest, I was preaching a mission at a parish, it came time for confession.
- 0:10This woman came up to me and she said, you know, Father, I haven't been to confession
- 0:13in 17 years, but it's okay because I'm basically a nice person.
- 0:21What would you have said?
- 0:23Stay with me.
- 0:24I've got a story to tell.
- 0:25Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTague, your host every day here at the Catholic Current,
- 0:28coming to you from the Station of the Cross Catholic Meeting Network.
- 0:31Let's take a closer look.
- 0:33Glad you're here.
- 0:35There's a lot of misunderstanding of sin these days.
- 0:39Sin is what other people do.
- 0:41Sin is everybody else's fault.
- 0:43Sin is what makes me cry out and point at you, see what you made me do?
- 0:48And then there's sin that's sins of groups.
- 0:51There's structural sin, there's social sin, but nobody talks about what I did in my sin,
- 0:58what you did in your sin, and what our sin as even as individuals does to ourselves and
- 1:07our relationship with God.
- 1:09Sin has been on my mind lately because I have this sneaking suspicion that a lot of sin
- 1:14or a lot of what had been called sin is going to be swept under the rug or it's going to
- 1:20be relabeled as a virtue and who knows, maybe even a sacrament.
- 1:25Why do I say that?
- 1:26Well, because our old friends from study group number nine have been busy.
- 1:31You know, when we had the Synod on synodality, there were study groups and one of the busiest
- 1:36study groups was number nine.
- 1:38And I have in mind their recent report, and my goodness, this is a mouthful, I'm going
- 1:44to take a deep breath, Theological Criteria and Synodal Methodologies for Shared Discernment
- 1:50of Emerging Doctrinal, Pastoral and Ethical Issues.
- 1:54Now I've been around the block.
- 1:56I've been around a lot of bureaucrats.
- 1:57I've been around a lot of academics and a lot of clergy and religious.
- 2:02When they get together in groups and talk like that, you can expect mischief.
- 2:08So I thought to myself, hey, you know what?
- 2:11Maybe we need to spend some time talking about sin and in particular, the deadly sins.
- 2:17Remember the seven deadly sins?
- 2:19Or if your hair doesn't look like mine, I should probably ask, have you ever heard of
- 2:23the seven deadly sins?
- 2:25Well, they're actually easy to remember.
- 2:28If you can recall this acronym, PALEGAS, P-A-L-E-G-A-S, that's for pride, anger, lust, envy, gluttony,
- 2:39avarice, and sloth.
- 2:41I think we need to talk about them and not just go to the museum of quaint theological
- 2:47notions.
- 2:48We need to talk about why those deadly sins are deadly and how they are lived in a familiar
- 2:54way, a way that any demon would recognize, but also in new ways, in creative ways, given
- 3:02the strange world we live in in 2026.
- 3:05So here's my offer, my invitation to you.
- 3:07I am going to do an ongoing series on the seven deadly sins and in the spirit of synodality
- 3:15and accompaniment and participation, which is apparently now the new trinity these days,
- 3:21I'm going to invite you to work with me in addressing the seven deadly sins.
- 3:27So which sin do you want me to treat first?
- 3:31Is it pride, anger, lust, envy, gluttony, avarice, or sloth?
- 3:35Let me know in the comments section below, or write me at thestationofthecross.com slash
- 3:40askfather.
- 3:41Let's do this good work together.
- 3:44Meanwhile, think on these things today, take them to prayer, and talk about it with those
- 3:49you love.
- 3:50Go in peace and please do pray for me, for I am a sinner.
