Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: On October 2, 1952, Suspense presented Episode 7, Alan in Wonderland.
- 0:07Speaker 1: In New York's Pennsylvania station, South Carolina attorney Mr. Stone
- 0:12Speaker 1: is stranded when a young woman mistakes him for someone
- 0:15Speaker 1: else and gives him an Alice in Wonderland quotation as
- 0:19Speaker 1: an instruction. Stone follows the message to a West 15th
- 0:23Speaker 1: Street address, encountering a series of unsettling coincidences. When he
- 0:29Speaker 1: turns to the police, he has little evidence to support
- 0:32Speaker 1: his suspicions. Cornell Wilde stars as Mr. Stone, with Richard
- 0:38Speaker 1: Chandley credited for the script from a story by Kurt Singer.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Elliot Lewis directs this CBS broadcast, sponsored by Autolite. Here
- 0:48Speaker 1: is the original broadcast.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Autolite and its 98,000 dealers bring you Mr. Cornell Wilde
- 1:01Speaker 2: in tonight's presentation of Suspense. Tonight, Autolite presents a true
- 1:11Speaker 2: story with only names changed about a man who inadvertently
- 1:16Speaker 2: became involved in a murder plot. Our story, Alan in Wonderland.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Our star, Mr. Cornell Wilde. Say, Harlow, our team looks
- 1:32Speaker 2: great out there.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Ah, you bet, Hap.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And it's their teamwork that counts. Oh, by the way,
- 1:37Speaker 2: that's why you can count on the Autolite electrical system

- 1:55Speaker 2: electrical system is game as they come, Hap. It includes
- 1:58Speaker 2: the starting motor, distributor, generator, battery, coil, wire, spark plugs...
- 2:03Speaker 2: and all the other parts of the complete Autolite electrical
- 2:05Speaker 2: system installed as original equipment on so many leading makes
- 2:09Speaker 2: of our finest cars, trucks, and tractors. Top performers, eh, Harlow? Ah,
- 2:13Speaker 2: you can be sure of that, Hap. So, friends, insist
- 2:16Speaker 2: on Autolite original factory parts for your Autolite-equipped car. Be
- 2:22Speaker 2: sure of top performance. And remember, from bumper to tail light,
- 2:26Speaker 2: you're always right with Autolite.
- 2:29Speaker 4: And now, Autolite presents... Alan in Wonderland. A true story
- 2:34Speaker 4: starring Mr. Cornel Wilde. Hoping once again to keep you in.
- 2:39Speaker 5: Suspense.
- 2:44Speaker 3: To Judge Gordon Hall, Jr. Judge of the Superior Court,
- 2:50Speaker 3: Office 62, County Building, Greenville, South Carolina. Your Honor... As
- 2:58Speaker 3: attorney for the plaintiff in the case now before you,
- 3:01Speaker 3: I fully realize my absence from court this morning ipso
- 3:06Speaker 3: facto places me in contempt. However, due to the fact
- 3:10Speaker 3: that I almost had my throat cut, I hope the
- 3:14Speaker 3: court will accept this explanation, but will keep it in
- 3:18Speaker 3: the strictest confidence. When your honor adjourned court last Wednesday...
- 3:27Speaker 3: I left by train for New York, planning to spend
- 3:30Speaker 3: the weekend with friends, return on the 3.50 Sunday afternoon.
- 3:35Speaker 3: My stay was pleasantly uneventful until approximately train time, when
- 3:40Speaker 3: due to extremely heavy traffic, I arrived at the station
- 3:43Speaker 3: later than expected. I missed by about five seconds. The
- 3:49Speaker 3: next train wasn't until 11.50. I looked at the station
- 3:53Speaker 3: clock to see how much time I had to kill...
- 3:56Speaker 3: I took out my wallet to see what I could
- 3:58Speaker 3: afford in the way of killing time. Almost immediately, I
- 4:02Speaker 3: was aware of a rather attractive young lady coming directly
- 4:05Speaker 3: toward me. I told you butter wouldn't suit the works.
- 4:12Speaker 3: If the court is familiar with Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland,
- 4:15Speaker 3: your honor may recall, as I did, that this is
- 4:18Speaker 3: a line from the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Feeling certain
- 4:21Speaker 3: that the lady was inebriated, I gave her the Marge
- 4:24Speaker 3: Hare's classic reply. It was the best butter.
- 4:28Speaker 6: All right, now listen. Seven o'clock sharp.
- 4:31Speaker 7: Be at 624 West 15th.
- 4:33Speaker 3: You'll get your money and instructions there. Make sure you're
- 4:36Speaker 3: not followed.
- 4:37Speaker 7: Understand?
- 4:38Speaker 3: Oh, yes, ma'am.
- 4:39Speaker 5: No buts.
- 4:40Speaker 6: And you were five minutes early.
- 4:42Speaker 3: You know that's dangerous. Oh, now look, honey, there's... Next time,
- 4:45Speaker 3: you better be on time. Obviously, I had received information
- 4:52Speaker 3: of importance to someone. Thinking it over, I got a
- 4:56Speaker 3: strong feeling it was something unlawful. The next thing was
- 4:59Speaker 3: to make sure. I wrote down the address on the
- 5:02Speaker 3: back of an envelope and moved a few yards away
- 5:04Speaker 3: from where I'd been standing, just under the station clock.
- 5:08Speaker 3: At exactly four o'clock, a man in a dark suit
- 5:11Speaker 3: took up my exact same position. He glanced at the clock,
- 5:15Speaker 3: took out his wallet, started to count his money. I
- 5:18Speaker 3: walked toward him casually. I told you butter wouldn't suit
- 5:23Speaker 3: the works.
- 5:24Speaker 6: It was the best butter.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Get out of town fast. They're wise to us.
- 5:29Speaker 5: Wise to us?
- 5:30Speaker 3: But no buts. The boss says get out of town. Apparently,
- 5:35Speaker 3: my choice of words was effective because the man immediately
- 5:38Speaker 3: followed my instructions with amazing speed and professional finesse. If
- 5:42Speaker 3: I had any doubts, the crime was in the making.
- 5:44Speaker 3: They were now completely erased. Consequently, I reported my evidence
- 5:48Speaker 3: to the police. Certainly an interesting story, Mr. Stone, but...
- 6:00Speaker 3: You don't believe me, Lieutenant? I didn't say that. But
- 6:04Speaker 3: that's what you mean, isn't it?
- 6:05Speaker 4: What I mean is there's no law against quoting Alice
- 6:08Speaker 4: in Wonderland in Pennsylvania Station or anywhere else for that matter.
- 6:11Speaker 3: You're a lawyer. You ought to know that. All right, sure,
- 6:14Speaker 3: but they were using it as a code. Isn't that plain?
- 6:17Speaker 3: You'd like to know why. It's not just a question
- 6:19Speaker 3: of curiosity, Lieutenant.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Look, Mr. Stone.
- 6:22Speaker 4: New York is a city of over eight and one
- 6:24Speaker 4: half million. A certain percentage are screwballs. Oh, this wasn't
- 6:27Speaker 4: a screwball. These people are deadly serious. They're up to something, Lieutenant,
- 6:31Speaker 4: I assure you. I've got to have something to go on, Mr.
- 6:34Speaker 5: Stone.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Even if we could find these people, what do I
- 6:37Speaker 4: charge them with? I've got to have something concrete. Well, now,
- 6:41Speaker 4: the address on 15th Street. Can't you investigate it?
- 6:44Speaker 5: Okay. All right, wait a minute.
- 6:48Speaker 6: Healy?
- 6:48Speaker 5: Yeah, Lieutenant? You want me? Yeah, Healy.
- 6:52Speaker 3: This is Mr. Stone.
- 6:53Speaker 4: I want you to drive him to an address on
- 6:55Speaker 4: 15th Street. He'll explain all about it on the way.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Of course, I couldn't blame the lieutenant for being skeptical.
- 7:06Speaker 3: It sounded crazy telling it that way, but it was
- 7:09Speaker 3: the truth, and I couldn't help resenting his attitude, as
- 7:12Speaker 3: if I'd dreamed up the whole thing, merely to get
- 7:15Speaker 3: myself a ride in a squad car. As we drove downtown,
- 7:22Speaker 3: I recounted the events to Officer Healy, who fortunately showed
- 7:25Speaker 3: serious interest. He explained that this part of New York
- 7:29Speaker 3: was not known as a crime center, which further increased
- 7:31Speaker 3: my belief that I had stumbled onto no ordinary criminal undertaking.
- 7:37Speaker 3: The traffic thinned as we approached the neighborhood of 15th Street.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Everything looked Ordinary enough, but typical Sunday afternoon street scene.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Children at play, strolling couples in their Sunday best, baby carriages,
- 7:52Speaker 3: drugstore open on the corner, a blind man selling pencils.
- 7:58Speaker 5: What was that number again, Mr.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Stone? 624 West.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Now, that'll be the north side. Now, let's see.
- 8:06Speaker 8: 618, 620, 622.
- 8:11Speaker 5: That's funny.
- 8:12Speaker 3: What? What's funny?
- 8:14Speaker 5: Well, they're tearing down the building. That's 624. Got to be.
- 8:19Speaker 3: It can be.
- 8:20Speaker 5: You sure 624 is the number?
- 8:22Speaker 3: I'm positive. I wrote it down right away.
- 8:24Speaker 8: Well, maybe I'm wrong, but let's go over and check.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Hey.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Hey, you.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 8:34Speaker 6: What do you want?
- 8:35Speaker 5: Come here a minute. Keep your eyes open, Mr.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Stone.
- 8:38Speaker 5: Let me know if you see anybody you recognize.
- 8:40Speaker 3: All right.
- 8:41Speaker 5: What's the matter, officer? Something wrong? Want some information. Who's
- 8:46Speaker 5: the boss of this job?
- 8:47Speaker 7: Me.
- 8:47Speaker 5: Me, I'm the boss. What's the trouble? What's the number here? What?
- 8:52Speaker 3: We want to know the number of this building.
- 8:54Speaker 7: What?
- 8:54Speaker 6: Oh.
- 8:55Speaker 8: Oh, this was 624. You sure? Sure, I'm sure.
- 9:00Speaker 9: 624.
- 9:01Speaker 8: I'm tearing down the right building. Don't think I'd make
- 9:04Speaker 8: a mistake like that, do you? How long you been
- 9:06Speaker 8: working here?
- 9:07Speaker 3: Two weeks.
- 9:08Speaker 5: Gonna tear down the ones on both sides, too. I
- 9:11Speaker 5: know what I'm doing. You want to see the papers?
- 9:13Speaker 5: We believe you. How come you're working on Sunday? Rush job.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Anything wrong with that? I guess not.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Why are you tearing the buildings down?
- 9:22Speaker 5: To clear the lot. You kidding? What are you guys
- 9:25Speaker 5: looking for?
- 9:25Speaker 3: It's all right. Forget it.
- 9:28Speaker 5: You're welcome to watch, but I gotta get back to work. Okay,
- 9:31Speaker 5: that's all.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 9:35Speaker 5: See anything, Mr.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Stone? No. No, nothing at all.
- 9:39Speaker 5: That all looked legit to me, too.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Uh, I guess the lieutenant was right. I got all
- 9:46Speaker 3: hopped up over nothing.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Well, that's the way it goes sometimes.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Can't get over it. I was so sure from.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Oh, you did right anyway. Take it from me.
- 9:54Speaker 3: I feel kind of foolish now, but.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Don't feel that way. You had cause.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Ah, well, let's just forget the whole thing. I'm sorry
- 10:03Speaker 3: I troubled you.
- 10:04Speaker 5: Oh, no trouble at all. That's what we're here for.
- 10:09Speaker 5: Where would you like me to drop you off?
- 10:11Speaker 3: My train doesn't leave till 11.50, huh?
- 10:13Speaker 5: Well, you got plenty of time. Why don't you take
- 10:16Speaker 5: in a movie or something?
- 10:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I might as well, I guess. Just drop me
- 10:19Speaker 3: off around Times Square, please.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Sure thing.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Next time you're up from Greenville, drop in and see
- 10:24Speaker 5: us again.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Officer Healy dropped me at one of the Broadway theaters.
- 10:33Speaker 3: I bought a ticket and went in. There had to
- 10:37Speaker 3: be something to it. Somewhere along the line, I'd made
- 10:40Speaker 3: a mistake. I took out the envelope on which I
- 10:43Speaker 3: had written the address. By the light of the screen,
- 10:45Speaker 3: I re-read it again. No, the mistake wasn't there. Then
- 10:50Speaker 3: my mind went back over the Mad Hatter's tea party. No,
- 10:54Speaker 3: there was nothing there. Then it suddenly hit me. The
- 10:59Speaker 3: girl had said to be at 624 West 15th Street
- 11:02Speaker 3: at 7 o'clock. Nothing about being inside. That was it.
- 11:05Speaker 3: It had to be. I glanced at my watch. It
- 11:08Speaker 3: was just 641 when I left the theater.
- 11:13Speaker 5: Taxi!
- 11:14Speaker 3: Hey, taxi! Taxi! 624 West 15th and step on it.
- 11:31Speaker 3: It was exactly three minutes to seven when I reached
- 11:34Speaker 3: the corner of West 15th. The street was deserted now.
- 11:38Speaker 3: I walked slowly toward all that was left of 624.
- 11:42Speaker 3: I could see no one, but I was certain I
- 11:44Speaker 3: was being watched. I reached the front of the building
- 11:48Speaker 3: and stopped. It was exactly seven o'clock. The sound came
- 11:57Speaker 3: from the opposite end of the street. Fortunately, whoever it
- 12:01Speaker 3: was would have to pass under the only street light.
- 12:04Speaker 3: When he reached the cone of light, I saw a man, well-dressed,
- 12:08Speaker 3: wearing dark glasses, feeling his way toward me with a cane.
- 12:13Speaker 3: It didn't look real.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Seven maids?
- 12:23Speaker 3: Seven mops?
- 12:25Speaker 1: Good.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Follow me. And I remembered the rest of it from
- 12:30Speaker 3: Alice in Wonderland. If seven maids with seven mops swept
- 12:35Speaker 3: for half a year, you suppose the walrus said that
- 12:38Speaker 3: they could get it clear? I doubt it, said the carpenter,
- 12:42Speaker 3: and shed a bitter tear.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Autolite is bringing you Mr. Cornel Wilde in Alan in Wonderland.
- 13:02Speaker 4: Tonight's presentation in radio's outstanding theater of thrills, Suspense.
- 13:07Speaker 5: Suspense. Well, Harlow, we won.
- 13:20Speaker 2: And, Hap, you always win with an Autolite electrical system.
- 13:23Speaker 2: That's why it's used as original equipment on so many
- 13:26Speaker 2: leading makes of our finest cars, trucks, and tractors.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 13:29Speaker 3: The boys really went all out today.
- 13:31Speaker 2: And so does your Autolite electrical system, Hap. It goes
- 13:35Speaker 2: to work the instant you start the ignition and keeps
- 13:38Speaker 2: on working every second your engine runs. as well as
- 13:40Speaker 2: when you sound your horn, play your radio, turn on
- 13:43Speaker 2: your lights, use your electric windshield.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Wiper or lighter.
- 13:46Speaker 2: That electrical system is mighty important to every car owner, eh, Harlow?
- 13:50Speaker 3: Right you are, Hap.
- 13:51Speaker 2: So, friends, treat your car's electrical system to a periodic
- 13:54Speaker 2: checkup at your car dealers or at your nearest authorized
- 13:58Speaker 2: auto light service station. You can easily locate your nearest
- 14:01Speaker 2: authorized auto light service station in the classified section of
- 14:05Speaker 2: your phone book under automobile electrical service. Or call Western
- 14:09Speaker 2: Union by number and ask for Operator 25. You'll find
- 14:13Speaker 2: it pays. And remember, from bumper to tail light, you're
- 14:16Speaker 2: always right with Autolite.
- 14:19Speaker 4: And now, Autolite brings back to our Hollywood soundstage Mr.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Cornel Wilde in Elliot Lewis' production of Alan in Wonderland.
- 14:28Speaker 4: A true story, well calculated to keep you in suspense.
- 14:45Speaker 3: The blind man led me east along 15th Street. To
- 14:50Speaker 3: assure myself, I passed my hand in front of his face.
- 14:53Speaker 3: He was blind, all right, if that was any comfort.
- 14:56Speaker 3: I had no choice except to follow him, but I
- 14:58Speaker 3: still couldn't help wishing there'd been time to phone the police.
- 15:01Speaker 3: You were right on time.
- 15:02Speaker 6: That's what we like.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Yeah, sure. Business is business, ain't it?
- 15:07Speaker 6: Exactly, young man, exactly.
- 15:10Speaker 3: The dame told me I'd get my money here, is
- 15:13Speaker 3: that right?
- 15:14Speaker 6: As agreed. 1,000 before, 2,000 after.
- 15:18Speaker 3: If all goes well.
- 15:19Speaker 6: We were informed you're the best.
- 15:22Speaker 3: The best? Why, sure. What else? You pay for something.
- 15:25Speaker 3: You should get the best.
- 15:26Speaker 6: Wait a minute. Is there anyone watching?
- 15:31Speaker 3: I don't see anybody. It's too dark.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Oh, good.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Then we go in here, the cellar.
- 15:38Speaker 5: Now, my key.
- 15:40Speaker 6: Ah.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Follow me. I can't see anything.
- 15:48Speaker 7: Don't worry.
- 15:49Speaker 6: I'll be your eyes.
- 15:57Speaker 3: I held on to the blind man's arm as he
- 15:59Speaker 3: led the way down a narrow corridor. It was black
- 16:02Speaker 3: as pitch. As he walked, my nostrils filled with countless smells,
- 16:07Speaker 3: all musty and old. The corridor made a turn, and
- 16:11Speaker 3: up ahead a faint light appeared. As we approached, I
- 16:14Speaker 3: could see the outline of a door. We stopped in
- 16:16Speaker 3: front of it and the blind man knocked.
- 16:23Speaker 6: Who is it?
- 16:24Speaker 7: Pig and Pepper.
- 16:30Speaker 3: The sudden light from the naked bulb was blinding. As
- 16:33Speaker 3: my eyes adjusted, a row of iron sinks came into
- 16:36Speaker 3: view along one wall. The room evidently had been the
- 16:40Speaker 3: building's laundry. Casually shifting my gaze, I observed three men.
- 16:45Speaker 3: One was big, all over hair like a gorilla. The
- 16:48Speaker 3: second was small, rat-faced. The blind man went over to
- 16:51Speaker 3: the third. Obviously, the boss, whose strange glowing eyes studied
- 16:56Speaker 3: me carefully from behind a battered table.
- 16:59Speaker 6: He doesn't look what I expected.
- 17:01Speaker 5: What did you expect?
- 17:02Speaker 6: A countryman. He doesn't look like a countryman.
- 17:05Speaker 7: What difference does it make? They guaranteed he could.
- 17:07Speaker 6: Do the job. They promised me a countryman. They told
- 17:10Speaker 6: us we'd have to take what they sent. You're sure
- 17:13Speaker 6: he's the one? No mistake?
- 17:15Speaker 2: Positive.
- 17:16Speaker 5: The appointed place, the appointed time, the password.
- 17:19Speaker 6: Even a blind man could see. Let us get on
- 17:24Speaker 6: with it, Alex.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Give him the instructions.
- 17:25Speaker 5: All right, all right. You.
- 17:29Speaker 3: Huh?
- 17:29Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 17:31Speaker 6: Listen carefully. It is now 7-5. They will leave their
- 17:36Speaker 6: hotel at 7.30 and they are very punctual. This is Nicholas.
- 17:42Speaker 5: Nicholas.
- 17:44Speaker 6: Nicholas will be your driver.
- 17:46Speaker 3: My driver?
- 17:47Speaker 6: You will sit in front with him. Did you bring
- 17:50Speaker 6: a weapon?
- 17:51Speaker 3: Well, no, I.
- 17:52Speaker 5: Good.
- 17:53Speaker 6: Extremely clever of you. In case you were caught coming here.
- 17:56Speaker 6: We have a weapon for you in the car.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Carlo.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Yes.
- 18:00Speaker 7: A beautiful mechanism.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Accurate.
- 18:03Speaker 7: You will enjoy using it.
- 18:04Speaker 6: Carlo will be sitting directly behind you in case anything
- 18:08Speaker 6: goes wrong. Understand?
- 18:10Speaker 3: Yeah, sure. Just as you say.
- 18:13Speaker 6: They will probably come out together.
- 18:15Speaker 5: Pray for it.
- 18:16Speaker 6: If Locke does not smile and Santusian comes out alone,
- 18:19Speaker 6: let him go. Being only foreign minister, he is less important.
- 18:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I understand.
- 18:24Speaker 6: This is the premier, Massini, that we want. I.
- 18:28Speaker 3: yeah, of course.
- 18:29Speaker 6: You must get Massini. If he comes out first, empty
- 18:32Speaker 6: your gun in him and forget Santusian. If they come
- 18:36Speaker 6: out together, kill them both.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Kill? I was being hired to kill. Massini, premier of
- 18:49Speaker 3: one of the Balkan republics, and Santusian, the foreign minister.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Their pictures have been in the papers constantly since they'd
- 18:55Speaker 3: arrived for an important UN meeting. Their deaths in the
- 18:58Speaker 3: United States would throw the Balkans into an uproar, and
- 19:02Speaker 3: I was to be the assassin. It seemed like part
- 19:06Speaker 3: of some terrible nightmare. No one knew where I was.
- 19:10Speaker 3: If I gave myself away, they'd kill me on the spot.
- 19:13Speaker 3: I was in it alone, up to my neck. I
- 19:17Speaker 3: needed help. I had to think of something. Stole. Anything.
- 19:20Speaker 6: You listening?
- 19:21Speaker 3: Yeah, sure I'm listening.
- 19:23Speaker 6: Your car will develop engine trouble directly in front of
- 19:26Speaker 6: the Park Avenue entrance. This will give you a clear
- 19:28Speaker 6: line of fire.
- 19:29Speaker 7: We were given to understand you never miss.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Oh, that's right. I never miss.
- 19:33Speaker 6: Nicholas will be outside the car pretending to examine the engine.
- 19:37Speaker 6: You will be alone in the front seat. The moment
- 19:39Speaker 6: will be yours.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Yeah, then there's nothing to worry about, is there?
- 19:44Speaker 6: Just one thing more. If you fail us, lose your nerve,
- 19:47Speaker 6: or decide to change your mind once the plan is over...
- 19:50Speaker 6: is in motion, Carlo has orders to kill you instantly.
- 19:54Speaker 7: I will be right behind you.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Well, okay, sure. You guys got a right to protect
- 19:59Speaker 3: your investment.
- 20:00Speaker 6: All right. It is now 7.10. You will leave in
- 20:03Speaker 6: five minutes.
- 20:04Speaker 7: Nicholas, you finish card game, huh?
- 20:06Speaker 6: Yeah. Hey.
- 20:19Speaker 5: What?
- 20:20Speaker 6: What is it?
- 20:21Speaker 3: My money. Yeah, what about my dough?
- 20:24Speaker 9: I have it right here.
- 20:26Speaker 3: One thousand.
- 20:28Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 20:30Speaker 9: Play, Nicholas.
- 20:42Speaker 5: A cigarette, young man?
- 20:44Speaker 3: No, no, no, no thanks.
- 20:46Speaker 6: I seem to sense a nervousness about you.
- 20:50Speaker 3: A nervous one? No, I just want to get my
- 20:52Speaker 3: hands on that rod. Of course you do.
- 20:54Speaker 5: That's the spirit.
- 20:55Speaker 6: All right. It's 7.15.
- 21:02Speaker 5: Wait.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Wait a minute.
- 21:04Speaker 6: What?
- 21:06Speaker 3: The rest of the money. What about the other two grand?
- 21:09Speaker 6: Carlo has it with him. You'll get it the moment
- 21:11Speaker 6: you complete the job. All set?
- 21:13Speaker 3: Now wait. Now let's see if Carlo's got it. I
- 21:15Speaker 3: have it.
- 21:15Speaker 7: It is getting late. We have to.
- 21:17Speaker 3: I want to see it.
- 21:18Speaker 7: I have it.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Come on, come on.
- 21:20Speaker 6: Show it to him.
- 21:21Speaker 7: But Alex... Show it.
- 21:25Speaker 3: There.
- 21:26Speaker 7: Satisfied?
- 21:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:29Speaker 3: I'm satisfied.
- 21:30Speaker 6: All set? Now go. And may luck be with you.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Good hunting, young man.
- 21:36Speaker 5: Good hunting.
- 21:38Speaker 3: We left. Carlo leading now and Nicholas right behind me.
- 21:44Speaker 3: I could only sense that we were headed for the
- 21:47Speaker 3: back of the building this time. But even if I'd
- 21:49Speaker 3: been able to see in that inky black, the narrow
- 21:52Speaker 3: corridor offered no chance of escape.
- 21:55Speaker 7: Stairs now.
- 21:56Speaker 3: I'd tried to make myself think of something, but I couldn't.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Only that I was dreaming it all like Alice and
- 22:03Speaker 3: pretty soon I'd wake up.
- 22:07Speaker 6: We.
- 22:08Speaker 3: came out of the back of the building into a
- 22:10Speaker 3: deserted alley. The big ape was still behind me and
- 22:13Speaker 3: Carlo in front. He led the way to a large
- 22:17Speaker 3: black car.
- 22:18Speaker 7: You ride in front with Nicholas. It is now 7.19.
- 22:29Speaker 7: All right, Nicholas.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Hey, Carlo.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Huh?
- 22:36Speaker 3: The gun. Let's have it.
- 22:38Speaker 7: You will have it in plenty of time.
- 22:40Speaker 3: But I feel funny without one. If anything goes wrong before.
- 22:43Speaker 7: Nothing will go wrong.
- 22:45Speaker 10: Nicholas is an excellent driver and the plan is perfect.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Perfect? A gun.
- 22:53Speaker 10: He's too quick for Massini. If it had been left
- 22:56Speaker 10: to me, it would have been a knife. Pay attention
- 22:59Speaker 10: to the traffic, Nicholas.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Thank you. We turned uptown, and the traffic began to
- 23:08Speaker 3: get heavier. I looked at my watch. It was 7.23.
- 23:13Speaker 3: I thought about jumping Nicholas, wrecking the car. But not
- 23:17Speaker 3: with Carlo in the back seat. I could feel his
- 23:19Speaker 3: little rat's eyes burning into the back of my neck.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Any sudden move, he'd be right on top of me.
- 23:25Speaker 3: My only chance was a policeman, a squad car, someone
- 23:28Speaker 3: I could signal.
- 23:29Speaker 9: 7.25.
- 23:37Speaker 7: One more block.
- 23:39Speaker 3: You better give me that gun.
- 23:41Speaker 9: In time. We are here, Nicholas.
- 23:53Speaker 7: Perfect. 727. Get out and look at the engine, Nicholas.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Hey, Carlo.
- 24:06Speaker 10: Pay attention to me. Look across at the entrance to
- 24:10Speaker 10: the hotel. They will come out the left-hand door. The
- 24:13Speaker 10: doorman will signal for their official car. It is right
- 24:16Speaker 10: back there, you see? They will step to the curb
- 24:19Speaker 10: before the car arrives. That is when you fire.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Okay, now give me the gun.
- 24:24Speaker 7: First, the knife.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Knife?
- 24:26Speaker 7: At the side of your neck, you feel it?
- 24:28Speaker 3: Hey.
- 24:29Speaker 7: Insurance for a good job. Sharp as a razor, my friend.
- 24:35Speaker 7: Here is the gun. Head trigger. Careful, you know.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Hey, that knife, you don't want me to miss.
- 24:42Speaker 5: Do you?
- 24:42Speaker 7: You will not miss. It is your business not to miss.
- 24:48Speaker 7: Now keep your eye on the door.
- 24:52Speaker 3: I could feel the point of that knife just barely
- 24:55Speaker 3: scratch the back of my neck. I looked across at
- 24:58Speaker 3: the hotel. It was 7.29. Everything was normal. People passed...
- 25:05Speaker 3: The doorman nodded and smiled, but no one looked our way.
- 25:10Speaker 3: I felt the gun go slippery as my hand began
- 25:12Speaker 3: to sweat. They wouldn't come out. They just couldn't. They'd
- 25:17Speaker 3: go out another door. The meeting was canceled. They'd see us.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Knew I had a gun. Nothing to worry about. They
- 25:23Speaker 3: weren't coming out.
- 25:24Speaker 9: 7.30.
- 25:25Speaker 6: There.
- 25:27Speaker 9: There they come.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Both of them. Move the knife, will you?
- 25:32Speaker 7: They're walking to the car.
- 25:34Speaker 6: Take aim.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Move the knife.
- 25:36Speaker 7: Take aim. I am now.
- 25:39Speaker 6: Shoot.
- 25:40Speaker 5: Shoot straight. Shoot.
- 25:42Speaker 7: Pull the trigger.
- 25:43Speaker 5: Shoot.
- 26:00Speaker 3: It all happened at once.
- 26:03Speaker 2: It all.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Happened at once.
- 26:05Speaker 5: Just relax.
- 26:06Speaker 3: You're all right. What?
- 26:09Speaker 6: You've been under a sedative.
- 26:12Speaker 3: Nurse?
- 26:14Speaker 6: Hospital?
- 26:15Speaker 3: My throat?
- 26:16Speaker 6: Oh, you're going to be all right. The doctor even
- 26:18Speaker 6: said you could have visitors. You can come in now.
- 26:21Speaker 9: No, no.
- 26:22Speaker 3: You mustn't let them in.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Wow, Mr.
- 26:24Speaker 6: Stone. How are you feeling? Well, I.
- 26:30Speaker 3: You, I... I feel fine, Lieutenant, but... Head's buzzing a little.
- 26:35Speaker 3: It should. You got a pretty nasty bump.
- 26:37Speaker 4: Doctor says you should get over it.
- 26:39Speaker 3: You're a lucky guy. What happened? What hit me? I did.
- 26:42Speaker 4: When I saw you aim the gun, I didn't know
- 26:45Speaker 4: what you'd do. There wasn't time, so I just ran
- 26:47Speaker 4: the squad car into the one you were in trying
- 26:49Speaker 4: to spoil your aim.
- 26:50Speaker 3: You were around all the time?
- 26:52Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 26:53Speaker 3: The big one's dead.
- 26:54Speaker 4: They don't hold out much chance for the other one either.
- 26:58Speaker 3: What did I... I did kill them. Oh, no.
- 27:01Speaker 4: No, I mean the guys you were with. We had
- 27:03Speaker 4: a tale on you every minute after you left the precinct.
- 27:06Speaker 4: He went to the movies, six of us.
- 27:08Speaker 3: And the blind man, Lieutenant, what about him?
- 27:10Speaker 4: I picked him and that other character up right after
- 27:12Speaker 4: you walked out.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Got the girl, too. Yeah, well, that's fine.
- 27:17Speaker 4: Just one more thing. None of this is going to
- 27:20Speaker 4: be made public. It might create some sort of incident.
- 27:24Speaker 4: I'm sorry, but that goes for you, too.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Oh, of course. I understand.
- 27:27Speaker 9: Sorry.
- 27:28Speaker 6: Time's up.
- 27:30Speaker 3: So long, Mr.
- 27:30Speaker 6: Stone.
