- 0:15radically with grace and hope and love. I mean,
- 0:19I would be proud to be in this council. It was an honor. I had
- 0:21so much fun. Tune in every Monday for the Revolution of Purpose solo
- 0:25show and every Thursday for Revolution of Purpose Conversations.
- 0:29What is that thing that you're going to do when you feel ready?
- 0:34Seriously, what is the thing that you know you want to do,
- 0:38but you keep telling yourself, I'm just not ready yet?
- 0:41Maybe you're waiting to start the business or to have the conversation,
- 0:46to make the move, to apply for the opportunity,
- 0:49to end something that you know has run its course, or to
- 0:53start something that you've been dreaming about for years. Put yourself
- 0:58out there. Whatever it is, you've convinced yourself
- 1:02that at some point in the future, you're going to wake up and finally
- 1:05feel ready. My friends, what if that day never comes?
- 1:10Because here's something I've discovered. You don't always feel ready
- 1:14before you make the decision. Sometimes you have
- 1:17to make the decision, and then the decision creates
- 1:22the person. Who becomes ready. Welcome back to the
- 1:25Revolution of Purpose podcast. On this solo show, I want to ask
- 1:30you about something very specific. Why do you
- 1:34stop doing the things you feel like you should do because you just feel like
- 1:38you're not ready? So there is this myth of readiness.
- 1:41I think we have this idea that before we make the
- 1:45big move in our lives, we're supposed to have this overwhelming sense of certainty
- 1:49that somehow everything is going to line up.
- 1:52The fear is going to disappear. The questions are going to go away.
- 1:56And we're going to wake up one morning and think, today is the
- 2:01day I have arrived. I am ready. But think
- 2:05about some of the biggest decisions that you've ever made.
- 2:09Did you always feel ready? Were you really,
- 2:12truly ready? Or did you make the decision and then
- 2:16you figured out how to become the person capable of living that?
- 2:20Because I think that's how transformation actually happens. We don't become
- 2:25courageous and then go do courageous things. We do courageous
- 2:28things, and through doing those things, we become courageous.
- 2:33We don't become confident and then step out into the opportunity.
- 2:36No, we step out into the opportunity, and by taking that step,
- 2:40the confidence develops because we discover,
- 2:44wow, we can really handle this. We don't
- 2:47always become ready and then move. Sometimes movement
- 2:51is the very thing that makes us ready. So what
- 2:55are you really waiting for? I want you to think
- 2:59about something right now. What are you waiting to feel ready
- 3:03for? And then ask yourself another question. What does ready
- 3:07actually mean to you? Does it mean that you're no longer
- 3:11afraid? Does it mean that you no longer have to know exactly
- 3:15how everything is going to work out? Maybe it means everyone around
- 3:20you doesn't have to approve. Does it mean that there's no possibility
- 3:24of failure and then you know you're ready? Because if that's what you're waiting for,
- 3:28you're going to be waiting forever. There are things
- 3:32in my own life that I've stepped into without knowing exactly
- 3:35how they were going to turn out. And looking back,
- 3:39I can see something now that I could not see then.
- 3:42I wasn't supposed to have everything I needed before I started.
- 3:47Some of what I needed could only be developed through that
- 3:50journey. The confidence, the wisdom,
- 3:54the very relationships that brought it about, the resilience,
- 3:58the experience, even the clarity. Those things weren't waiting for
- 4:03me at the starting line. They were waiting for me along the
- 4:07road. And sometimes we don't even fully discover
- 4:11who we are until we start moving.
- 4:14Let's take Oprah for an example.
- 4:18You know, today we know Oprah as one of the most successful and
- 4:22influential media personalities in the entire world. But early in her
- 4:26television career, Oprah was not yet, well, Oprah,
- 4:30not the Oprah that we know today. She was working in
- 4:33a small television studio in Baltimore,
- 4:37and she was struggling in that traditional anchor role.
- 4:40Eventually, she was removed from that evening
- 4:43broadcast. Now imagine experiencing that moment
- 4:47without knowing the rest of the story, because we have the benefit
- 4:52of looking backwards. We know what Oprah became, but she didn't have
- 4:56that perspective while she was living it. Think about how easy it
- 5:00would have been to interpret that as experience leading to
- 5:04the evidence that I'm not good enough. You know, what if she's like, this is
- 5:08telling me right here, I'm not cut out for television. What if
- 5:11this experience is telling me I was wrong about myself all along?
- 5:16But something interesting happened instead. Oprah eventually
- 5:20moved into daytime television, and that's
- 5:24where the very qualities that didn't necessarily fit the traditional evening
- 5:28news anchor role became some of her greatest
- 5:31strengths. Her ability to connect, her empathy,
- 5:35her curiosity, her willingness to be authentic
- 5:39and emotional and vulnerable and present with
- 5:42other human beings. And ultimately, that's what helped her discover
- 5:47the kind of television she was uniquely equipped to create.
- 5:51Here's why I think that matters. Sometimes you don't discover
- 5:55who you are by sitting somewhere trying to figure out who you are.
- 5:59Sometimes you discover yourself by moving,
- 6:03by trying something, by learning, by adjusting, by getting
- 6:07rejected, by getting redirected. You discover
- 6:11something about yourself that you could not have discovered from the sidelines.
- 6:15And here's the mistake that we make. We interpret something that
- 6:19it is evidence that we can't do something. It's evidence that we're
- 6:24not ready. But sometimes it is not evidence that
- 6:27we're not ready. It's just information. It's showing us something.
- 6:31When you get that rejection, ask yourself, what is this
- 6:36showing me? Maybe this isn't the right room for me.
- 6:40Maybe this isn't the right method for me. Maybe this isn't the right expression of
- 6:43my gift. But that does not necessarily mean that the gift
- 6:47is not there. That's why you've got to be willing to move,
- 6:52because clarity often comes through that movement. You take
- 6:56a step and you learn something. You take another step and you
- 7:00learn something else. And eventually you look around and you realize this
- 7:04journey wasn't just taking me somewhere. This journey was
- 7:07revealing me to myself. Identity comes
- 7:12before the evidence. And this
- 7:16is where identity enters this conversation. You know, we talk so much about
- 7:20identity on this podcast. If you've listened, you've heard me say your identity
- 7:24creates your destiny. And most people want evidence before they're willing
- 7:28to change how they see themselves. And they'll say, when the business
- 7:32succeeds, then I'll be the entrepreneur. I'll believe in
- 7:36myself. Or when people start listening to me, then I'll
- 7:40believe that I have something worth saying. Or when I get the opportunity, I will
- 7:44believe I'm qualified. When I accomplish that
- 7:47goal, I'll finally believe I'm capable.
- 7:51But transformation works in the opposite direction.
- 7:55You have to begin becoming the person before
- 8:00the evidence completely supports it. And that's why one of the foundational ideas
- 8:03I teach is be it and you will see it. If you've heard me for
- 8:06a while, you've heard me say, I'm not a fan of fake it till
- 8:10you make it. I don't believe in that because I believe everything
- 8:13we do is an authentic expression of ourselves, and it is so
- 8:17sacred and so honest. There's nothing fake about it.
- 8:21So instead, I say, be it and you will see it.
- 8:25You begin showing up as the person that you're becoming. You begin
- 8:29making decisions as that person. You begin speaking
- 8:33as that person, and you begin establishing the standards.
- 8:37Of that person. You start walking through doors as
- 8:41a whole different person. The identity of this person who
- 8:45can accomplish your goals, and eventually your external
- 8:49reality begins catching up with the internal
- 8:53transformation that you've done. And here's something I really
- 8:57want you to hear is that the old version of you may never
- 9:01feel ready for the life that the new version of you is capable of creating.
- 9:05Think about that. You're asking your current identity for
- 9:09permission to step into something that requires a new identity.
- 9:14Of course it feels uncomfortable. My friends, of course there is
- 9:17uncertainty. Of course, part of you says,
- 9:21what do you think you're doing? Who do you think you are?
- 9:25But maybe the better question is, who do you think you're becoming?
- 9:29Please pardon me while I interrupt your podcast episode with a quick message.
- 9:34If you're enjoying today's episode, can I ask you one small favor?

- 11:25please visit johnstreet.org Or reach out to
- 11:28me on any of the social media platforms I mentioned. And now let's
- 11:32get you back to today's episode, because perhaps the
- 11:37person that you've been ready and has been waking up every
- 11:41morning and getting in your head about how you can't do something
- 11:45isn't quite ready yet. And that's okay. You're just not trying
- 11:48to stay that same person. You're trying to take a step into becoming.
- 11:53Someone different, into becoming the person that's living your goals.
- 11:57There are moments when life invites us into something before we feel
- 12:01completely equipped for it, and the invitation itself
- 12:04becomes part of your transformation. There's another reason
- 12:09some people don't feel ready, and this one can be incredibly powerful
- 12:13because sometimes we've convinced ourselves that we're too late.
- 12:17Sometimes we've told ourselves we don't feel ready because
- 12:20we've missed it. We missed the boat. We've waited too long.
- 12:24We've gotten too old. Maybe you're listening to this
- 12:28and you're 40 years old. Maybe you're 50. Maybe you're 60.
- 12:32Maybe you're 70. Maybe you're looking around at people who
- 12:35started earlier and then they're doing something similar
- 12:39to what you're doing and you're like, I should have done this years ago.
- 12:43I've missed my opportunity. How many of you get on social media
- 12:47right now and find every 25-year-old saying they're a multimillionaire in their Lamborghini
- 12:52and living in their homes in Dubai and the Swiss Alps and you're like,
- 12:56how did I miss it? It's too late for me to reinvent myself.
- 13:00This dude with a washboard stomach and all these abs
- 13:03is telling me that he's so rich with AI and all I know how
- 13:08to do with AI is ask ChatGPT what I should have for dinner.
- 13:11I just want you to know, if you feel like that's you and you feel
- 13:15like you have missed your boat, you have not. Think about Vera
- 13:19Wang for a moment. You know, Vera Wang is synonymous with bridal
- 13:23fashion, But her dresses are absolutely astounding.
- 13:26They're gorgeous. But she didn't spend her 20s building
- 13:30the Vera Wang bridal empire. You know, she was a competitive figure
- 13:35skater when she was younger, and then she built a successful career in fashion,
- 13:39including years working at Vogue and then later Ralph Lauren. And it
- 13:43wasn't until the age of 40 years old that
- 13:47she entered the bridal design and opened her own bridal
- 13:50boutique. She was 40. Now think
- 13:54about that through the lens of identity. At 39 years old, the identity the
- 13:58world would eventually associate with the name Vera Wang had not
- 14:02even emerged yet. That chapter was still ahead of her.
- 14:07And I want somebody listening to hear me today when I say this: you
- 14:11have no idea what chapter of your story you
- 14:15may still be standing in front of. We have created these
- 14:19imaginary timelines for ourselves. I should have figured
- 14:23this out by 25. I should have known this by 35.
- 14:26I should have accomplished this by 40. I should be financially at
- 14:30this point by 50. I should have found my purpose
- 14:34by now. According to whom? You know,
- 14:37who established this deadline for you becoming
- 14:41your goal-achieved life? Maybe you aren't behind at all.
- 14:44Maybe you're just still becoming. Because everything you've
- 14:48lived through up to this point, the successes,
- 14:51the disappointments, the careers, the jobs, the relationships,
- 14:56the things that worked out and the things that failed spectacularly,
- 15:01those things have developed something in you that the next chapter
- 15:05requires. Vera Wang did not arrive at 40
- 15:09empty-handed. She brought decades of experience
- 15:13with her. Her previous chapters weren't wasted simply because they
- 15:17weren't the final chapter. And neither are yours.
- 15:21That's why I don't want you to sit here thinking, I should have started 10
- 15:25years ago. Maybe, maybe you should have, but you didn't.
- 15:29And unless somebody listening to this podcast has figured out time travel,
- 15:33you can't, you can't go back and do anything about that.
- 15:36All we have right now is today. So what
- 15:40can you do? Start today. There's that
- 15:44old adage, when is the best time to plant a tree? 10 years ago.
- 15:47When is the second best time to plant a tree? Today.
- 15:5210 years from now, you don't want to be sitting there and saying, I wish
- 15:55I had planted that tree. You don't want to be saying, I wish I
- 15:59had started 10 years ago. All we have is today. So today
- 16:02is the day to make the decision. Today is the moment to decide
- 16:06who you are, to allow the shift in your identity, to decide that
- 16:11you don't have to be fully ready. To walk into this new
- 16:15chapter of your life? The question's not,
- 16:18why didn't I do this sooner? The question is,
- 16:22who am I willing to become today? And that
- 16:25brings me to something else that we've got to understand.
- 16:29We have to stop interpreting fear as a stop
- 16:33sign, because sometimes fear means this matters
- 16:37to me. But I haven't done this before.
- 16:40Sometimes fear means I'm stepping beyond the boundaries of the identity
- 16:44that I've known. But it doesn't mean you can't create
- 16:47that new identity. It doesn't mean you can't be it and see it.
- 16:51Fear does not automatically mean that you're going in the wrong direction.
- 16:56Sometimes fear shows up precisely because you're finally
- 16:59moving. And courage is not the absence of that feeling.
- 17:03Courage is the deciding. This feeling doesn't get to
- 17:07make the decision for me. And my friends, that is powerful
- 17:11because now you don't have to eliminate fear before you move.
- 17:15You don't have to manufacture some magical feeling of readiness.
- 17:20You simply have to decide who gets to make the decision,
- 17:24the person that you've been or the person that you're becoming.
- 17:29So let's make this practical. I want you to identify one
- 17:33thing that you've been waiting to feel ready for. Not 10 things, but one thing.
- 17:38What is one decision that you've been postponing because you don't feel ready?
- 17:42And then instead ask yourself, what would the person
- 17:46that I'm becoming do next? I didn't
- 17:50say what would they accomplish? I said, what would they do next?
- 17:53Maybe it's sending that email or making the phone call or signing up for
- 17:57that class or starting the first page or posting the video or having the conversation.
- 18:02Walking into the room, asking for the opportunity,
- 18:06saying yes. Maybe it's saying no. Maybe it's finally
- 18:09saying, I'm making myself a priority. You don't
- 18:14have to know the next 100 steps. You need enough courage
- 18:17for one, because one decision creates
- 18:21movement, and that movement creates evidence, which creates confidence,
- 18:25and confidence begins changing the way you see yourself.
- 18:29That's how the new identity becomes real.
- 18:33It's like with Oprah. She couldn't have known where all of those steps were
- 18:37eventually going to lead. Vera Wang, at 39,
- 18:41one of the chapters that she would become most famous for had not even begun.
- 18:45Different stories, but the same principle. Stop waiting to
- 18:50feel ready. So here's what I want you to remember today. You may have
- 18:54received the feeling that you're waiting for. You may have said,
- 18:58I think I have hope to do this. Or you may have heard
- 19:03this and said, once again, I just don't think I'm ready, John. You don't
- 19:06know me or my situation. Readiness is not always about something
- 19:10you feel. Sometimes readiness is something that you
- 19:14have to create within yourself, and you create it by moving.
- 19:17You create it by deciding. You create it by taking a step
- 19:21forward while your voice still shakes a little, by saying yes before
- 19:25you know exactly how it's going to happen, by trusting that the
- 19:29person you need to become will emerge through the process. Of becoming?
- 19:34Your future is not asking you to have everything figured out
- 19:38today. It's simply saying, will you take the next best step?
- 19:42Because the life you desire is created by the person you become.
- 19:46And sometimes you become that person by stepping forward
- 19:50before you feel ready. And if you're listening to this today and you're
- 19:54thinking, John, I know there's something I need to do, and I know there's something
- 19:57more for me. I just don't know what my next decision is,
- 20:02that is why I have created the Shift Call Experience.
- 20:06Shift is a private mindset coaching experience with me
- 20:09built around one simple idea. One new decision can
- 20:13change the trajectory of your life. We will look at where you
- 20:17are. We will see where you want to go. We will see who you
- 20:21are and who you're becoming and what may be standing between those
- 20:24two realities. And then together, we'll identify one decision that
- 20:28you can begin to put action into your
- 20:33life immediately. Because sometimes you don't need another 6 months of thinking.
- 20:37You just need a shift in your perspective, a new decision,
- 20:41a new way of seeing yourself. And that decision might just be
- 20:45the beginning of everything that comes next. So if you'd
- 20:48like to experience a Shift Call with me, reach out and
- 20:52let's make this happen. You can always go to johnstreet.org
- 20:57and sign up for your Shift Call there, or also send me a message with

- 21:13Just know that you don't have to feel ready to begin.
