- 0:06Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon here
- 0:09on a Wednesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network flagship from Des
- 0:13Moines Sports Station One O 6.3 KXNO.
- 0:17Trent Condon, Ken Miller with you for the next couple of hours
- 0:20as we get back to Iowa based programming for the next 6 hour
- 0:24block is coming up at 2O clock off the bench with Lucas and
- 0:27Sean. Here's what's coming up with
- 0:29Trent and myself here this morning.
- 0:31We head down to Kansas City in about 25 minutes.
- 0:35Our colleague Alec Bussey will join us.
- 0:38He's covering the Big 12 Media Days down in KC and we'll get
- 0:43the latest from Alec. You'll join us 1225 live from
- 0:47Kansas City. Big 12 Media Days, Day 2 for
- 0:50that event going on down there. Women and the men.
- 0:52Women yesterday, men today. Bussey coming up here at 12:25.
- 0:57What are we doing after that? Trent?
- 0:59I forget. Oh, it's it's our buddy Mitch
- 1:00Holtis, the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 1:03Chiefs Monday Night Football, they'll take on the Commanders.
- 1:05Boy, that game kind of lost a little bit of its luster with
- 1:08the Jane Daniels news that it sounds like he's going to be the
- 1:12very best. He's questionable.
- 1:14I'd say that at the best, he's questionable.
- 1:16So we will talk to Mitch Holtis. We'll go back to that Just
- 1:22drubbing of the Raiders and take a look forward to the Commanders
- 1:25coming up with Mitch at 12:45 off to Chicago.
- 1:28They don't want to clock with her buddy Cappy.
- 1:30Cappy will be here. Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors
- 1:34Cappy and then John Bowen camp on the Hawks and on the Dodgers.
- 1:37Although do we? Avoid talking baseball.
- 1:40Well, he'll want to. I know he'll he'll force it into
- 1:42the conversation. He's the president of the Dodger
- 1:45Fan Club Iowa Chapter. Yes.
- 1:47Boy, that would ruffle his feathers if we didn't get to
- 1:50that with. Thanks, John.
- 1:51Click. Really.
- 1:53Anyways, and then Trent will make some plays of the day and
- 1:57we will wrap things up here at about 2:00.
- 2:00So there were very little on sports, lots.
- 2:02Did you watch in the NBA? I watched a ton.
- 2:04You did, yeah. Did you see Michael Jordan
- 2:07involved at? All I didn't.
- 2:08I saw the clip and I never clicked on him.
- 2:09I was going to and just ran out of time, but I didn't.
- 2:14What it sounded like is what the him and Tariko probably taped a
- 2:17thing and they're just going to play different parts of it
- 2:19throughout. That's it.
- 2:20Yeah, I thought, you know, because if you think he's the
- 2:24greatest basketball player of all time, you're right, you are.
- 2:27But many people don't, including a guy we both worked with and
- 2:30Jimmy B. Right, who's not the sharpest
- 2:33knife in the? Drawer.
- 2:33No, but he's he's I I think his job in retirement is to to
- 2:37defend Wilt Chamberlain on Twitter as he does Yeah, every
- 2:42day. Every day he's fighting with
- 2:44somebody that that wills the best.
- 2:46SO point being is I'm trying to draw draw a line between the
- 2:51greatest basketball player and the greatest hockey player.
- 2:53And Gretzky's in periodically for TNT.
- 2:56So I wondered if Jordan is going to be involved, you know, in
- 2:58that respect. Maybe big nights, maybe playoffs
- 3:01and maybe we'll get him in studio.
- 3:02But I'm not so sure that we will.
- 3:04But the games themselves, were they, I I didn't watch.
- 3:07You know what I watched last night?
- 3:09John Candy. I like me.
- 3:11Uh huh. Phenomenal.
- 3:13Was it phenomenal? I'm gonna put it on the list.
- 3:15Do it, do it, absolutely do it now.
- 3:18I remember when they started at cause SCTV was a thing in
- 3:22Canada. Yes, absolutely.
- 3:23And some of their names that were part of that.
- 3:25This was back in the 70s prior to your time.
- 3:29But it's really good. And then I went, I started,
- 3:31'cause I had to wait for my wife to finish Netflix.
- 3:34Because is it? Is that the same way at
- 3:36everybody's house if one TV is watching Netflix and other one
- 3:38can't? I think our there's multiple
- 3:41tiers and you might have a tier where it's just only one stream
- 3:44can be happening at a time. We have one where I think we can
- 3:46have up to three at a time really.
- 3:48Yeah. Did they all have to be in the
- 3:50same house? No.
- 3:51Huh. Well, I can't watch it if
- 3:54Cindie's watching. Oh, really?
- 3:55Which is kind of weird, but anyways.
- 3:57So once she was, you know, casting her chips, then I went
- 4:00to who killed the Expos because that debuted last night and that
- 4:04had my attention to well, that was some good.
- 4:05There were some good teams up in up in Montreal, but.
- 4:08I heard it was more about the kind of the the actual financial
- 4:11side. It was, yeah.
- 4:13That's. True, it wasn't a ton of
- 4:14baseball. There was some, but you're
- 4:15right. And you can tell that a lot of
- 4:18the people that were chronicled in it are speaking French.
- 4:21Sure, yes. And you could see their mouths
- 4:23not matching up with what's being said.
- 4:25And that drove me crazy. Oh, I bet.
- 4:27Yeah, but but you know, do the John Candy of the two do the
- 4:31John Candy for sure. It's phenomenal.
- 4:32It really is. So I kind of took a night off
- 4:34sports, end of my night watching hockey, but I couldn't bring
- 4:37myself to watch the NBA. So I didn't get into the NBA
- 4:41until the fourth quarter of game one and then watch most of Game
- 4:442. Did you bet?
- 4:45Is that why you did? No.
- 4:47I was just intrigued. It was the NBC angle.
- 4:49I just wanted to see, you know, And I was surprised because I
- 4:52didn't look at the TV listings because we don't look at TV
- 4:54Guides anymore. But I didn't look beforehand.
- 4:56I just assumed that the second game was going to be in a
- 5:00Peacock exclusive and I was shocked.
- 5:02It was both of them on big NBC. They were both on NBC so.
- 5:07Did they? Did the local NBC here get their
- 5:09news in after so they had to wait till after 10:00?
- 5:12Because game one went overtime. I mean, they didn't get to the
- 5:15Lakers Warriors game until it was, I don't know, like 3634,
- 5:19what time the game end. It was well after 10.
- 5:22That's a 10. Yeah, I think.
- 5:24Yeah, absolutely. So I was I just again with the
- 5:28news pretty good lead in there with the defending champion
- 5:31against Kevin Durant the Rockets that they go into the news No
- 5:34NBC then had Game 2 hard to say no to the Warriors and the.
- 5:37Lakers. No, It is.
- 5:38It is. And when they put that together
- 5:40as before, LeBron. Obviously, yeah.
- 5:42Before is this going to be? Is this going to be a sad LeBron
- 5:45year? You know, I wonder that Trent,
- 5:47it's, it's funny you say that because he's 150 to 1 to win the
- 5:51MVP. That says a lot there.
- 5:54LeBron James is 150 to 1 to win the MVPI.
- 5:58Hope he's not one of those guys that sticks around longer than
- 6:01he should. I mean, it's hard to say you you
- 6:05can't play anymore. One of the best players that's
- 6:07certainly of this generation. Is that fair?
- 6:10I mean, Curry's Curry, but Lebron's LeBron.
- 6:13I mean, good luck trying to, you know, guard him through the lane
- 6:16with a head of steam. He I just, I think a Larry Bird
- 6:19laying on his back watching him late in his career.
- 6:22I mean, he couldn't sit on the bench and you hear sciatica and
- 6:26a back injury and a guy in his 40s.
- 6:30I think it's more likely that he's playing a handful of games
- 6:33as opposed to even getting over half of them.
- 6:36If you had to put that prop bet now over under 41 1/2 games.
- 6:40Oh. I take the under.
- 6:41I think so too. Because if it's a back.
- 6:43It's a back and we just that is the one thing in the body that
- 6:47we still struggle to kind of figure out everything with.
- 6:49So this is Don Chester's team. Yes, there's.
- 6:51I mean, that's undeniable at this point.
- 6:54But now we'll see. One of the greatest ever play
- 6:56the game, clearly. And he did it for a long time.
- 6:58And I'll never forget watching his high school game when they
- 7:01made him cover up his tattoos on ESPN, too.
- 7:04And it was appointment TV about hearing about this kid in one of
- 7:07the suburbs of Cleveland, just how good he was.
- 7:10And he's the next. And all right, you got me.
- 7:12I'm watching this. And he comes up, He's got his
- 7:14tattoos all taped over. And he was, and he has been up
- 7:17until this year, an absolute dominant force in the game.
- 7:20So no, I couldn't get, I couldn't get into the hoops last
- 7:23night. ESPN has it tonight.
- 7:26Now I'm going to watch that because I want to see how they
- 7:29incorporate. At least I'm assuming that
- 7:32Charles and company are going to be a part of this.
- 7:36Good call. Now post game, they said they're
- 7:38going to let him run. They said that they're going to
- 7:40do it. Now you're going to be hitting
- 7:41the pillow. Then I won't see it.
- 7:43Well, before what about? Pregame or between the double
- 7:45header? Because they've got a double dip
- 7:47tonight, I'm pretty sure. I know that they've got the San
- 7:50Antonio, Dallas game and they start with Cleveland.
- 7:56Oh my God, Two of the best teams in the East, maybe the best
- 8:00teams in the East. Cavs versus Knicks and finish up
- 8:03with Spurs and The Mavericks. That's an 8:30 so we might get
- 8:07in between games. If there's time like last night,
- 8:10there wasn't time. Yeah, that'll be intriguing.
- 8:13I have no idea what it's going to look.
- 8:14Like I might have to rely on you.
- 8:16Yes, but I will have it Owl. Yes, I will.
- 8:19I will have it on and I'll flip it on and we will go from there
- 8:22and see what this thing looks like.
- 8:24And early on these first couple of times they're going to give
- 8:27them leeway. What I'm wondering.
- 8:28About though is they clip their wings.
- 8:30Well, and certainly April, different conversation, right?
- 8:33When we get to playoff time, that's different.
- 8:35But during the regular season we get those wild clips and those
- 8:38wild things that are happening on a random night, You know, in
- 8:41January, well, we got to get we got College Football Playoff
- 8:44coming up and we got to get to Sports Center.
- 8:46We got to get to Van Pelt and and Van Pelt's awesome.
- 8:48Van Pelt is so good. He's phenomenal.
- 8:50I. Agree.
- 8:50I mean, he is. He's your everyday guy.
- 8:54Easy to root for, easy to listen to.
- 8:56It's not just old Sports Center, it's with some personality with
- 9:00his old radio show kind of mixed in there.
- 9:02You got Stanford Steed, you got bad beats.
- 9:04You got all fun elements too. You're just going to say I'm
- 9:07sorry, Scott Van Pelt, we're we're not going to go to you
- 9:10because we're only going to talk about the NBA.
- 9:12Yeah, no, it's ESPN. It's ESPN.
- 9:16It's not basketball piano. It's ESPN.
- 9:18As much as sometimes maybe they forget that over there.
- 9:22We got NFL playoff game. But you know what?
- 9:23Let's just let those guys talk for an hour and. 1/2 yeah,
- 9:26Fairpoints, Trent. Fairpoints can be interesting to
- 9:28see how they do it. I agree with you, obviously,
- 9:30April, May, June, a different animal because they'll just let
- 9:34them go and they lose baseball. I mean, they're down to one game
- 9:36a week after this year. Well, after now because
- 9:39baseball's over for them as Fox has the exclusive when it comes
- 9:43to that. So cool stuff there.
- 9:46I clicked on something today that just blew me away.
- 9:49Do you know which cornerback in the NFL?
- 9:52This is a tricky question. The lowest completion percentage
- 9:56of any cornerback to play that position in the NFL this year
- 9:59is. Patrick's certain be a good
- 10:02guess, right? It'd be a really good, but it's
- 10:04wrong. It's wrong.
- 10:05Is it his teammate? Yes, it is.
- 10:07Rally boss. Isn't.
- 10:08That, well, I mean, would you just pass interfere with people?
- 10:10I guess it's all. Right.
- 10:11That's true. And a lot of people pointed that
- 10:13out that he does draw a lot of flags.
- 10:15But you know what? He drives me crazy because of
- 10:18those penalties. But he's who thought who in
- 10:20their right mind? No one.
- 10:22I'm not even sure his parents. I thought this was he was going
- 10:26to reach this level. That it was going to be
- 10:28opposite. One of the best to do it in the
- 10:30last decade. I mean, were you Hawkeye fans,
- 10:32you watched the Purdue game with your own two eyes?
- 10:35We all did. Yeah.
- 10:36He was one of, what, 4 guys that were pulled off, right?
- 10:39The receiver of that game, right.
- 10:41David Bell doing whatever he wanted.
- 10:42The the French guy or the French captain?
- 10:44I do, I do whatever his Dave was.
- 10:47It was just time and time, I mean, Brahm just coaching
- 10:49circles around Phil Parker time in the time, but that doesn't
- 10:52happen often. Well, and the other component,
- 10:54it's something, let's say the quiet part out loud, he's white
- 10:57and we don't see that. We haven't seen that in decades.
- 11:01Jason Sehorn. That was 20 years ago.
- 11:03A long time ago. It was over 20 years and when
- 11:06you looked at him, he said maybe he can catch on as a safety,
- 11:10maybe a nickelback, you know, but he's starting every down
- 11:14cornerback. No, Look at Cooper De.
- 11:16Jean is doing too, by the way. Hasn't given up a touchdown in
- 11:19his it's. Amazing.
- 11:20You see that play he made was the Jefferson in the corner of
- 11:22the end zone it. Was pulling out of.
- 11:23His pull that out of his hand, Yeah.
- 11:25And he didn't do that against, you know, some walk, No.
- 11:28The maybe arguably Tim or his former college teammate Chase.
- 11:31For my money, those two were at the head of the class, but
- 11:34unbelievable. Riley Moss, Ankeny, IA, Ankeny
- 11:37Centennial, coached by Jerry and Ryan Pozzetti and company.
- 11:40Well done, well done. Riley Moss.
- 11:42They got a test this weekend. Dallas and the Broncos.
- 11:45Have you looked at the NFL slate of games this week?
- 11:47I'm sure you did because you're live in Survivor.
- 11:51Is it a good slate overall? I didn't think so.
- 11:54I think there's some games that are interesting and we'll
- 11:58probably get intrigued, but. Is Lamar Jackson back for your
- 12:01Bears, by the way? He's going to play.
- 12:04Everything I've read, I think it would be a surprise if he's not.
- 12:06Out. Is he able to run like Lamar
- 12:08Jackson or is he that's a different kind of thing, OK.
- 12:11But he's going to be out. I mean, he has to, they, they're
- 12:13back against the wall now and they have to have him out there.
- 12:16But you know, the early window Bill's a Carolina.
- 12:19No, Is that actually interesting?
- 12:21No, Carolina's four and three. OK, Bill's are circling that.
- 12:24Yeah, you know what? There's a little bit because of
- 12:26that aspect, right? Bill's going the wrong way.
- 12:29Carolina Arrow pointing up. The Texans have to win.
- 12:32They're taking out a 49ers team Somehow, someway is five and
- 12:35two. Trent I don't.
- 12:37I thought Houston was going to be a lot better this year.
- 12:40That offensive line is awful yeah watching them go to go
- 12:45situations Raska like and just. By the way, he joins us tomorrow
- 12:49at 1:30. Yes.
- 12:50Stephen up simple will be with us.
- 12:52That might be the most well listened to simple segment we've
- 12:54done. I think so, yeah.
- 12:55There's a lot of. Anticipation of SIP.
- 12:58They can't run the ball inside the five yard line and I know
- 13:01Fred Warner is not there and I know they're banged up, but they
- 13:03have to win that football game. I think that's intriguing at
- 13:07minimum. Here come the Giants off the
- 13:09devastating loss. You know what?
- 13:11Jackson darts for real. He's not going to make it
- 13:13through the year. He's going to get hurt.
- 13:15But he's AII. The Giants have their
- 13:17quarterback. That interception, though late,
- 13:20was. Well, he's he couldn't get any
- 13:23weight behind because somebody had his foot.
- 13:25There was a Bronco that had his foot.
- 13:27You know what? It was Singleton, because he
- 13:30went right through Scataboo, knocked him on his keister and
- 13:34got tangled up in. Yeah, you can't make the throw.
- 13:36I agree. I'm glad he did, of course,
- 13:38Broncos fan, because that changed the whole game, right?
- 13:41It did. It changed the whole game.
- 13:44You go through these games and on the surface they feel like
- 13:46blah, but you kind of dig deeper and I think it's every one of
- 13:50these have more trick. Drake may getting all this buzz
- 13:52for MVP. What he's doing now, he goes up
- 13:54against the best defense in the other short of a price.
- 13:56He's 8 1/2 to. One look at their schedule.
- 14:00Look, don't they have to win the conference for him to be the
- 14:02MVP? They have to be.
- 14:04Or even do they have to win his division?
- 14:07Yes. And they can.
- 14:09The Patriots schedule is about as easy as you're going to.
- 14:12Find you know what? Let me click on it.
- 14:14Browns this week. Yeah, that's OK.
- 14:17Home for Atlanta You believe in Atlanta going on the road.
- 14:20November game in New England at Foxborough.
- 14:23Atlanta's good, tough game. Atlanta's not winning that game
- 14:27at the Bucks. Who knows how healthy the Bucks
- 14:29are going. To be at that point, OK.
- 14:30They get The Jets, yeah. And they get the Bengals.
- 14:33Still no Joe Pearl. No, but they got Joe Flacco.
- 14:38Then they get the Giants dart. Then they get their bye week
- 14:41before. Their bye week is the second
- 14:43week in December. Before they host the bills.
- 14:47And they would. Get big spot.
- 14:49They finish at the Ravens. Could be tough.
- 14:51Yeah, at The Jets and home for the Dolphins.
- 14:54Oh my God those last two are lay UPS.
- 14:56This team might be 13 and 4. No.
- 14:59What are they? What are they at now?
- 15:015:00 and 2:00 if they get in the playoffs, Jackson Darts going to
- 15:05be a legit Drake. Yeah, pardon me, Drake May is
- 15:11going to be an illegitimate MVP candidate.
- 15:15Rabel, Coach of the Year I. Think that's already done?
- 15:18I really do. It's.
- 15:19Not already done. There's a lot of football.
- 15:21I get it, but look at the trend he's on.
- 15:22I mean you've just had them what you have them 13 and 4 frables
- 15:26home free if that's the case. If they're 13 and four, yes,
- 15:29that is an absolute luck for that award.
- 15:32The schedule's easy. And because of that, yeah, Drake
- 15:34May at plus 850, you know, oh, boy, that's short.
- 15:37It's not mine. It's a quarterback award.
- 15:38It's a quarterback award. There's no other.
- 15:41There's no other position that's going to win it.
- 15:43If Shaquan Taylor would have an hell of a if Shaquan, yes, Squan
- 15:46Barkley couldn't win it last year.
- 15:48No one's winning it other than a QB.
- 15:50No offensive player of the year. That's a different category.
- 15:53That's a different wager. I don't know.
- 15:55I'm just not a Drake May he's great.
- 15:58He might be the right now. Is he the leader of the class?
- 16:00Oh yes, even over Daniels. He got so both years of mine.
- 16:06Daniels has the big one. Playoff, Yep.
- 16:09Playoff win, Yep. Brought his team to an NFC
- 16:11championship. So because of that, he's got
- 16:13him. He's.
- 16:14Still the leader in the clubhouse, he's the leader, but
- 16:16he had a comfortable lead and now that leads down to a stroke.
- 16:19Yes, right. Yeah.
- 16:21Yeah, cuz, cuz May's closing. May's closing.
- 16:25He's been really good. Boy throws a nice pass.
- 16:27Did you think coming out of North Carolina he was going to
- 16:29be that guy? No, because the last North
- 16:31Carolina quarterback was Mitchell Trubisky.
- 16:34Yeah, yeah, he got some scar tissue there.
- 16:36Yeah, yeah. Just a little bit, yeah.
- 16:38In other games this week, Tampa, as banged up as they are now
- 16:42without Evans, maybe for the rest of the year, go to that
- 16:45plucky New Orleans team that can push you.
- 16:47It's a divisional game. Weird things happen.
- 16:49You mentioned Cowboys, Broncos, that I think that's an
- 16:51excellent. That might be the game of the
- 16:52week. Steelers and Aaron Rodgers host
- 16:56the Packers. Other than prime time, I agree
- 16:58that that that's a big spot. There is a lot more to it than
- 17:02on the surface because all of them are just kind of weird
- 17:04matchups, matchups you don't see very often but you dig a little
- 17:07bit deeper. I think this is week.
- 17:08It's going to be a good one and it starts tomorrow night.
- 17:11With a really good game for both teams, I mean, this is not a
- 17:14must win, but this is a big spot for both teams because both
- 17:17teams feel as though their season is kind of teetering a
- 17:21little bit. Look at the look at the
- 17:22Chargers, they start out three and all wins in their division,
- 17:25right? Bing Bang boom took took care of
- 17:28the Chiefs week, won the Broncos Week 2 and then got the Raiders.
- 17:31Everybody's going to get the Raiders this year, but but
- 17:36they're not looking anywhere near what they once were.
- 17:39Here comes the Minnesota Vikings.
- 17:42Where are they at right now? 2 bad offensive lines.
- 17:45Two banged up offensive lines? Yeah, for sure.
- 17:47Good luck figuring that out. You can't.
- 17:50Chargers are what, four and three still?
- 17:52Yep, 4 and 3-4 and three, three and three for the Vikings.
- 17:55Yeah, interesting. All right, so Trent said kind of
- 17:58the deeper you look into it, the better the NFL slate looks of
- 18:01games this weekend. It starts tomorrow night.
- 18:04Now, we do not have Westwood ones coverage tomorrow night.
- 18:07We've got Paul Allen's call tomorrow night.
- 18:10The Vikings Radio Network will be a part of that one.
- 18:14So we'll join that one. I'm guessing right at 6:00,
- 18:17right? So when overtime Iowa comes to
- 18:19its conclusion, we will get right to the Sofi Stadium.
- 18:26Paul Allen and the Vikings Radio network is Vikings and the
- 18:29Chargers. Let's get Ben.
- 18:31He would like to chime in on the NFL.
- 18:33Hello Ben, How are you? Hey guys, how you doing?
- 18:37Good. Hey Ken, so you're a big Broncos
- 18:40fan. I'm a big Cowboys fan.
- 18:42Question for you. When was the last time the
- 18:43Cowboys beat the Broncos? I it's it's wrong.
- 18:49What do you do? You know what's off the top of
- 18:51your head. Yes, I do.
- 18:52I I. Do what?
- 18:53When was it? When was the last Cowboys?
- 18:56Super Bowl. Oh my God, that year, No way 19.
- 19:0095 that far back. Yep, Obviously they don't play
- 19:05every year, but yeah, I get it. Still, that seems like they
- 19:08would have put one in the win column between.
- 19:10Are you excited about your team, Ben?
- 19:12I the I I am. I'd like this Cowboys team.
- 19:15Williams with the Broncos cut is running the ball hard and he's
- 19:19not fumbling. It seems like he's catching on
- 19:22the receiver. CD lambs as good as theirs.
- 19:24What about your offensive line? Is that question mark?
- 19:28Yes, I think that. No, I think all this one is
- 19:30solid now. They're fully healthy except for
- 19:32this. I think the centre's still out.
- 19:35But I mean, we got we got Tyler Smith back, we got Tyler Booker,
- 19:39we got Tyler, we got the three Tylers.
- 19:43I mean, George Pickens has been just a huge light on the sky.
- 19:47You know, for us this year running game's been solid.
- 19:50Jake Ferguson's looking great at tight end back is, I mean, in my
- 19:54mind should be the front runner for that.
- 19:55He's in the conversation. Here's a question for both you
- 19:58and and Trent. Brandon Aubrey over under their
- 20:02Mile High. Yes.
- 20:03They're Mile High. Do you let him try from 70?
- 20:05Yes, I think you do. Yep, I wouldn't.
- 20:08I would too. I mean, the 67 yarders are no
- 20:10problem there, no problem. This might be one of the
- 20:12greatest kickers. Never kick a football in the
- 20:13NFL. That's not how long before?
- 20:17And how long before other NFL teams just going to find a man,
- 20:20land a misfit and the MLS players and see if they can do
- 20:23this stuff too? I mean, it's insane.
- 20:25He just goes up there. I haven't felt this way about a
- 20:27kicker since Dan Bailey. I'm like, sure he was good for a
- 20:31while, yeah. And we just walk away from the
- 20:34TV because you'll be making it. Yeah.
- 20:36Hey Ben, good luck to your team next week, man.
- 20:39You too. Yep, see you buddy.
- 20:40I'm at the following week. Aubrey 70 yards.
- 20:44Yes, no problem. I mean, you think of some of
- 20:47those deep ones too. Has there been any that just
- 20:49inched over the crossbar? There is always room.
- 20:52There's a couple yards I. Remember when I first started to
- 20:55hear about this Brandon Aubrey buzz?
- 20:57I tracked down Sean Roberts. Oh, yeah, he wasn't.
- 21:01He wasn't hosting then. And I said, tell me I don't
- 21:05remember him. Sean at Notre Dame.
- 21:07How did I miss this guy? What a weapon he must have been.
- 21:11He didn't kick there. Yep, but if you click on his
- 21:14bio, Notre Dame, Notre Dame. But yeah, he didn't kick.
- 21:19I'm looking at the box score from that Broncos, Cowboys game,
- 21:221995. Yes, says the that the win
- 21:25streak's incredible in that game.
- 21:27You know Cowboys, Traikman, 196 yards, 2 touchdowns and a pick.
- 21:31Does it? Who does it say who?
- 21:32Caught them? Well, the receiving, yes, Jay
- 21:36Novacek, OK and Bruce Johnston, 94 yards receiving for Irvin.
- 21:41That team was ridiculous, as it really was.
- 21:43But for whatever reason in that game, John Elway did not finish.
- 21:48He's playing poorly. He's eleven 24152 yards, 2
- 21:51touchdowns and a pick I. Was cheating Cowboys?
- 21:53Sacked a couple of times and Hugh Millan.
- 21:56Was the backup that year Who was?
- 21:58What were the running back stats?
- 22:00Terrell Davis had 11 carries for 61.
- 22:03Wow. Rod Bernstein 5 for 19 into his
- 22:06career. And let's see who else was in
- 22:09there. Glenn Milburn.
- 22:12Yeah, he was a high draft pick. Rod Smith catches.
- 22:15Rod Smith did not have a catch in that game.
- 22:18Wow, who let them in? Who lead?
- 22:19Let the team. And receive another former
- 22:21Charger along with former Charger Bernstein, Anthony
- 22:24Miller. Anthony Miller, Yeah.
- 22:26And the kicker that year was who was it?
- 22:29Elam. Then might have been It was
- 22:30Elam. Yeah, it was Elam that was doing
- 22:33it, and Ruin was the punter. Yeah, Tom Ruin, he's married to
- 22:37an Olympian and she, is he in a wheelchair?
- 22:42She's in a wheelchair. Amy Van Dyke.
- 22:45Does that name ring a bell? It does not.
- 22:48She is a United States Olympian and and maybe it's a apparel if
- 22:54a Paralympian. Amy Van Dyken.
- 22:58Got me on that one. You've got the Google Machine
- 23:00right in front of you, man. Well, professional career I they
- 23:04I do not see a personal life ruin.
- 23:06Has been married to six time Olympic gold medal swimmer Amy
- 23:09Van Dyken since 2001. Bang nailed it.
- 23:13Did. Let's get to our first guest,
- 23:17That's Alec Bussey. We'll get to him in Kansas City
- 23:19next. Keyword this hour, Bills.
- 23:21Bills at kxno.com. Your chance to win $1000 in this
- 23:26nationwide contest. Bills at kxno.com.
- 23:29Miller and Condon joined by Alec Bussey.
- 23:30On the other side is the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:35I'm Hillary Condon. Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 23:38Network. Trenton.
- 23:39Ken with you until 2. Let's head down to Kansas City.
- 23:42Well, should stay there because Mitch Holt is going to join us
- 23:45when we come back from our next break.
- 23:47Right now, we're turning back the clock.
- 23:49Remember when Alec Bus used to join us a couple of times a
- 23:51week? I do very well.
- 23:52Indeed he. I can hear him five times and
- 23:54you can. Five times a week with our
- 23:57colleague Heather Burnside. The first quarter.
- 24:00Alec and Heather, how are you enjoying that?
- 24:02First of all, before we get into a Big 12 media days, you enjoy
- 24:05getting up in the morning. Are you having fun?
- 24:07Alec Bussey. No, for sure, I'm definitely
- 24:10having fun, but I don't know if anything's better than hopping
- 24:12on at 12/31/30 with the Miller and Condon show on a Monday or
- 24:16Wednesday. I mean, that's that's like the
- 24:18good old days. And what's that saying?
- 24:19And friends guys and Andy Bernard has a wish You knew you
- 24:22were living in the good old days when you're in the good old days
- 24:24or whatever. I feel like I'm back in the good
- 24:27old days talking with you boys. No, it was fun.
- 24:29We certainly appreciate what you're doing.
- 24:31We're glad you're part of our team now, Monday through Friday,
- 24:34as Trent said while you're down there, I like the way that the
- 24:36Big 12 is doing that. I remember in previous you'll be
- 24:40the coaches and then the players will be sequestered in in
- 24:43another room and I like the fact that they're all on the podium
- 24:47at the same time. Kind of a little Q&A.
- 24:50Is that a, is that relatively new or is that been, is that
- 24:53been the way it's been for a while, Alec?
- 24:56Yeah, the way they have it set up this year is more like Made
- 24:58for TVI think the Big 10 did something like this a year ago
- 25:03for their media days, which I usually in Chicago.
- 25:06And I think it went over pretty well from the conference side of
- 25:09thing, the network side of things to do it that way because
- 25:11media based have become such ATV show for the conference,
- 25:14television partners, broadcast partners.
- 25:17And I think the Big 12 kind of saw what the Big 10 did.
- 25:19They're adopted it and they they're brought it here this
- 25:22year. I can say from my personal
- 25:24perspective, I don't know how much of a positive development
- 25:26it is, but I don't know if it's much of a negative development
- 25:29either. For me personally.
- 25:31That podium that was up there with the the media
- 25:34representative and then TJ Alsenberger, along with the
- 25:36three Iowa State players, Tayman Lipsey, Joshua Jefferson, Emila
- 25:40Monkchila Beach, you know those guys.
- 25:43It was kind of more of just a casual thing.
- 25:44It wasn't anything that you're going to take quotes from and
- 25:47kind of plug into a story, but it was cool to kind of see them
- 25:50and hear them breakdown a couple film clips that were played, I
- 25:53mean, and explain what they saw there, explain where they
- 25:56developed that action from. So that was informative.
- 25:59And that's not something that you ever get to usually see or
- 26:01interact with players as they visually see something and break
- 26:05it down because usually, right, like we're just kind of talking
- 26:08back and forth in in an interview type of format, but
- 26:11certainly a different format for the Big 12 media days here in
- 26:14Kansas City. We were able to talk with TJ
- 26:15Alsenberger and each of I would say three players for between 5
- 26:18and 10 minutes this morning. And then they had their little
- 26:21side podiums, guys that I think went for about 20 minutes total
- 26:25between the the coach and the players.
- 26:26So it's been an informative day and I'm excited to continue to
- 26:30kind of bounce around as as well as work on some content and talk
- 26:32with a few more reporters and everything else of the like.
- 26:34Alec the top of the full story, certainly.
- 26:37Is the health of team and Lipsy important not just for the
- 26:39beginning of the year, but all season long going to come into
- 26:42the year? What can you tell us about the
- 26:44injury? Sounds like targeting, hoping to
- 26:46be back, not for the exhibition game, the next one, but the
- 26:48first regular season game. And and is this something could
- 26:51be debilitating, something that could be lingering throughout
- 26:54the course of the season? Yeah, it's a great two MCL spray
- 26:57and I believe it's in his right knee.
- 26:59It's a specific injury sustained that one of Iowa State's very
- 27:02early preseason practice as it may have been their first or
- 27:06second practice. I believe it happened in a
- 27:08rebounding drill was a roughly A4 to six week recovery timeline
- 27:12for Lipsy. He's actually right on time with
- 27:14that. He is not going to play on
- 27:16Sunday when Iowa State plays against Northwestern at Hilton
- 27:19Coliseum in their second final exhibition of the preseason, but
- 27:22he will play or at least they're hoping he's going to play.
- 27:25He's on track to potentially play against FDU fairly
- 27:29Dickinson on November 3rd, that first Monday of the season.
- 27:32So I think it's looking fairly positive that lips he's
- 27:35available when they play FDU on November 3rd and if not, I would
- 27:39definitely expect him to be in the lineup.
- 27:42I believe that following Monday, November 10th when they play
- 27:45Mississippi State up in Sioux Falls at the Pentagon.
- 27:48So he's not going to miss any significant time against any
- 27:51challenging opponents, it doesn't seem seem like.
- 27:54And there's a very good opportunity for him to be back
- 27:56against fairly Dickinson. And he would be obviously super
- 27:59important to get back, as you said, trying.
- 28:00I mean, he's he's a snake of their defense.
- 28:02He's ahead of their defense. And obviously he brings some
- 28:05things offensively with his ability to get the basketball in
- 28:08the pain, his ability to facilitate more than than
- 28:12Killian Toure is going to do for for Iowa State this year.
- 28:15And I think Taven Lips, he's going to have the basketball on
- 28:17his hands much more this season than he did a year ago when they
- 28:21kind of gave the ball more to Keyshawn Gilbert and Curtis
- 28:23Jones, as you saw with these usage rate go to a career low
- 28:26last season. Is it in your mind is, is
- 28:29Houston clearly head and shoulders the favorite going
- 28:32into this year? I mean, I know they're ranked
- 28:34two in the country, but there's a lot of love for PBYUI like
- 28:37Texas Tech, Arizona, Arizona's good Iowa State.
- 28:41Obviously Houston head and shoulders better than anybody in
- 28:45this conference or remains to be seen.
- 28:46How do you look at it? Yeah.
- 28:48So to me, there's a clear top six and within that top 6, I
- 28:52think there's a distinctive line between the top three and then
- 28:54four through 6. Amongst those top three.
- 28:57I do think that Houston is a team that I like the most.
- 29:00Kelvin Sampson is obviously one back-to-back Big 12 titles, has
- 29:04lost just four Big 12 regular season games last two years.
- 29:07They bring back, you know, three really good players from last
- 29:11year, 2 all Big 12 players, point guard Milos Huzan, along
- 29:14with Senator JoJo Tuggler, who might be one of the best
- 29:16defenders in all college basketball this season when you
- 29:19think about his length, his ability to protect the rim at
- 29:22the level that he does. But then Emmanuel Sharp also
- 29:24comes back as a respected shooter.
- 29:26They also have one of the nation's best high school
- 29:28recruiting classes coming in Houston does that's headlined by
- 29:31Christina, who is a five star prospect ranked inside of the
- 29:34top 10 nationally by 24/7 Sports.
- 29:36So I do think Houston is number 1.
- 29:38And then between 2:00 two and three, you have Texas Tech and
- 29:40BYUI think BYU is going to be a little bit more fun, a little
- 29:43bit more sexy when you think about AJ Debansa, the number 2
- 29:47prospect in the country coming in for for BYU.
- 29:50And then you compare that with the additions of of Rob Wright
- 29:53and Kennard Davis to transfer guards, right?
- 29:56Obviously comes in to BYU after a successful freshman season at
- 30:00Baylor. Kennard Davis comes over from
- 30:02Southern Illinois, Carbondale. That's a positive edition for
- 30:05BYU as well. But I think the return of Richie
- 30:07Saunders and Kate are are both valuable for head coach Kevin
- 30:11Young there and Provo. And then the third team for me,
- 30:14it is Texas Tech. I think you can put two and
- 30:16three in whatever order you'd like.
- 30:18Red Raiders, they return conference player of the year JT
- 30:21Toppen, Christian Anderson, point guard, I expect him to
- 30:23take a step forward. And they also bring in a
- 30:25transfer from Washington State, Lejean Watts, who's going to be
- 30:29a really good player for Texas Tech and Grant Mccaslin this
- 30:31year. And then I think that second
- 30:32tier it is probably Arizona, Iowa State and Kansas.
- 30:37Again, I think you can put it whatever order you'd like.
- 30:39I think Arizona I probably give a little bit of a tick to just
- 30:43because they're going to be so big, they're so big, they're so
- 30:45long, they're super athletic, really talented freshman group
- 30:49that's coming in for them. I do question what their
- 30:52inexperience could could cause for them.
- 30:54Does that lead to some struggles at different points?
- 30:56But I think Tommy Lloyd's got a really big, really long group
- 31:00and I think that's going to help them play like they did in his
- 31:03first couple seasons there in Tucson.
- 31:04And then I think Kansas. Kansas is really interesting to
- 31:07me. Darren Peterson might be the
- 31:09number one drastic this coming June.
- 31:11He's probably going to be a front runner for an All American
- 31:14type season for Kansas. You listen to Bill Self talk
- 31:17about Darren Peterson and he talks about him and a category
- 31:20that he talks about very few freshmen throughout his tenure
- 31:23at Kansas. And Darren Peterson's going to
- 31:24be an absolute superstar in this league.
- 31:26But the rest of their roster, I do have some questions about
- 31:29things. Florida Badanga, it's a little
- 31:31bit undersized on the interior, but he's a great rim protector.
- 31:33Somebody's going to run the floor, be a great lob threat,
- 31:36dunker kids go around the rim. But what kind of production do
- 31:40guys like Trey White or Jaden Dawson, Melvin Council, the kid
- 31:45Rosario give them? I think those are real question
- 31:47marks that could determine the feeling of the Kansas Jayhawks
- 31:50this season. Good stuff, Alec Bussey mornings
- 31:54here with Heather Burnside, 6 until nine the first quarter and
- 31:57of course, 24/7 Sports cyclonealert.com.
- 32:01Thanks for doing this, brother. Appreciate it.
- 32:03And you'll be back in up and Adam and on the radio tomorrow
- 32:07morning at 6:00 AM Alec. Thank you bud.
- 32:10Thank you guys so much for having me.
- 32:11I appreciate it and thank you so much.
- 32:12Yep, good to talk to you, Alec. Buses, we check in from Kansas
- 32:15City. We'll stay down in Kansas City.
- 32:18The voice of the Chiefs is Mitch Holtis.
- 32:19He joins us next. Miller and Condon talking sports
- 32:22with you on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:28I'm Miller Condon welcome back Des Moines sports station one O
- 32:316.3 KX&O in the Iowa sports radio network wave.
- 32:35You're listening in the state of Iowa.
- 32:37Grateful that you are the Donaldsons Papa John's all over
- 32:41the state of Iowa. They sponsor this segment on a
- 32:43weekly basis with our buddy Mitch Holtz, the voice of the
- 32:47Kansas City Chiefs. Mitch Trenton Ken, thank you for
- 32:49doing this. I don't mean this to sound harsh
- 32:52when it comes to the Raiders, but that was that was
- 32:56embarrassing. I mean, three first downs.
- 32:58Did Kansas City dominate this team?
- 33:00As bad as the box score says that they did.
- 33:04Kind of worse. I, I don't want to pile on here,
- 33:07but I mean they had 30 plays that she said 30 points.
- 33:12I mean it was 31st downs 30 and then they shut it down that she
- 33:17shut it down basically in the third quarter, early third
- 33:20quarter and started going to a knee before the two-minute
- 33:22warning. I've never seen that.
- 33:25It's yeah, I mean, they're not having Jacoby Myers, not having
- 33:31Brock Bowers, but come on. But what?
- 33:33What what's going on there? So, yeah, I don't know.
- 33:37I don't know what that team will look like when we play them
- 33:39again in Week 18. Yeah, and you know who's going
- 33:42to be around at that point with the trade deadline all right
- 33:45around the corner? Well, this defense has been
- 33:47special, and they just kept finding the pieces.
- 33:50You got a clip for us today with Leo Chanel.
- 33:52Mitch set it up. Oh, he's so good.
- 33:55Well, every so excited about the offense and well they should be.
- 33:58You think about what they've done.
- 34:00I mean, they're averaging 30 points a game now and really
- 34:03since half time to the New York Giant game and now with
- 34:06everybody on deck, they're just so explosive in contact you 100
- 34:10ways. But let's don't overlook the
- 34:12defense. You always get to overlook
- 34:14seemingly and the fact that this defense now, the second-half of
- 34:17Jacksonville notwithstanding, let's just think about what
- 34:20they've done. The Ravens came in and they were
- 34:24on fire offensively and the Chiefs pretty much shut them
- 34:26down. And then the Lions came in
- 34:29threatening a 70 year NFL record and the Chiefs held him to 17
- 34:33points. And then it's Kansas.
- 34:35You know, the Chiefs obliterated the Raiders there.
- 34:38And so it's not just about the offense.
- 34:40But I did talk, talk to Leo today, actually, and ask him
- 34:44about, you know what, what this defense is doing now to keep
- 34:48pace with the offense. Yeah.
- 34:49I mean, we talked about it. We talked about it, you know,
- 34:51today too, and team meeting. We just got to find that
- 34:53consistency. Obviously we had we'd plays, you
- 34:57know, we wish we had back and crucial moments in those, those
- 34:59losses. But I just see a resilient team.
- 35:02You know, it's a lot of guys that have been in in the
- 35:04situations before. We're not doing well and we have
- 35:07a resilient team. I'm like, guys are humble enough
- 35:10to like, all right, what do we need to fix week to week?
- 35:12And guys are stepping up to the challenge.
- 35:15Yeah. We think of offense as getting
- 35:17into a rhythm. I think the defense now is
- 35:19starting to get into that rhythm.
- 35:20The Chiefs, I believe, are the only team in the NFL in the top
- 35:23five now in both offense and defense.
- 35:26Yeah, that, that'll that'll get thing And yet still they are not
- 35:28in the playoffs if they started today, which is just.
- 35:31Now we're right that we're not in.
- 35:33Just mind boggling to me. The Monday night game.
- 35:36This was one of those couple of weeks ago.
- 35:38He started, you know, looking ahead to what's coming up and
- 35:40all of a sudden this Commanders in Chiefs game on Monday night.
- 35:43That looks like it certainly had some buzz.
- 35:45But if Daniels can't go and Mariota's a backup for a reason.
- 35:49He has his moments, but not enough of them.
- 35:51Kind of a little bit of luster off of this game.
- 35:54I know it's still Monday night. It's really important and
- 35:56everybody in the league is watching, but kind of
- 35:58unfortunate as a football fan that the Commanders won't go in
- 36:02there assumingly without their full complement and in
- 36:05particular their quarterback. Ken, it's really interesting.
- 36:08Last year they went 12 and five. You know that the magical season
- 36:11they were this year's Colts, the 25 Colts for the 24 Commanders.
- 36:16Think about it. And then they went all in, man,
- 36:19in the offseason. They signed like over a dozen
- 36:21free agents. They just were signing guys.
- 36:23Only had five draft picks. They're trading picks.
- 36:25They go Laramie Tunsil because they know, hey, we can take out
- 36:29the Eagles. Well, here they are and they're
- 36:32looking up at everybody but the Giants right now.
- 36:34So it's it's some of its injuries, some of it is did they
- 36:38get away from what they were doing to try to build it.
- 36:41I think people get a little greedy and try to push it.
- 36:45But a minute Debo Samuel plays, that's dangerous.
- 36:48Don't know if McLaren will play. He's the most underrated guy in
- 36:51the league. I think at wide receiver least
- 36:53has been for six of the seven years.
- 36:55And and then Jacory Krosky, Merritt is pretty good.
- 36:59I mean, he's been a surprise defensively.
- 37:02They're also beat up. But anyway, yeah, no, they're
- 37:04it's just, it just shows you, hey, you can go all in, but you
- 37:07better build the base that lasts for years.
- 37:10Mitch, last week I was in Iowa City, so just kind of conversed
- 37:14with you. But two weeks ago I brought up
- 37:16Rashard Smith and now I see Andy Reid's praising him, the passing
- 37:19game coordinators praising him. How big of an essential just for
- 37:23this year? You look at the future, a guy
- 37:24that hasn't been a running back for very long, we know that
- 37:27there's definitely upside there. But for this season, how
- 37:30important of a piece and how big of a role do you think he can
- 37:32have this year? Huge and bigger than you might
- 37:35think. And that's part of this.
- 37:38Coach Reed taught me 13 years ago about attacking
- 37:41geometrically. And I'm not giving out
- 37:43government secrets because it changes by the play.
- 37:46But you have you find the weak points in the in the structure
- 37:49of the defense or personnel and then you attack different
- 37:52points. You can attack the whole Galaxy
- 37:54if you've got enough weapons. And the chiefs do if that is
- 37:57your fourth option or fifth option on a play lookout,
- 38:01because this is a four three guy.
- 38:04And and we saw it with the screen game last week.
- 38:06We've seen it in the Sprint draw game.
- 38:08We've seen it even in on deep routes.
- 38:10He can run it. He was a wide receiver at the
- 38:12University of Miami. So he's the he's the sneaky 1
- 38:15here. Everybody talks about Rice and
- 38:17Brown and Worthy and Kelsey. But wait a minute.
- 38:21Brashard Smith has that level of speed and becomes a real weapon
- 38:25for this team, whether it's first, second or third down,
- 38:27maybe even 4th down. We'll get to Papa John's in just
- 38:30a second, But Speaking of food, do you have a favorite table at
- 38:331587 Prime yet? Have you been to my home?
- 38:36Get in. I just I can't get in like I go,
- 38:39dude, I did his gala Monday night.
- 38:41I go, can I get in now? Can I get a place?
- 38:43Well, maybe you can get in the kitchen.
- 38:45You can sit back in the kitchen. Yeah, No, I want to get in
- 38:48there. So I know the guys that supplied
- 38:50the meat. It was they're really good
- 38:52friends and it's awesome food. I mean, it's, it'll be if we
- 38:56everything's settled down, we can get in at some point.
- 38:58Then people want to drive from Des Moines for it.
- 39:00It's. That good?
- 39:02That sounds good. We'll talk about some pizza in a
- 39:03moment here. It wasn't all sunshine and
- 39:05rainbows, though, as the Chiefs lost the guy for the year, Omar
- 39:09Norman Lot, their second rounder, goes down toward an
- 39:11ACL. I thought it was fitting seeing
- 39:13Mahomes being one of the guys that was helping him over to the
- 39:16sideline and just showing that leadership quality, but that's a
- 39:19blow. Does that lead to them sniffing
- 39:21around to the trade market for another defensive lineman?
- 39:25Well, Trent, I think that we're going to do that anyway.
- 39:27They're just they need a body and they're at the least to lose
- 39:30Mike Pannell to at the end of the cuts was it was a blow and
- 39:37Tillery's a little more slender. You need you need a guy that can
- 39:40be a 2 gap, you know, eat some snaps.
- 39:41That'd be good. You don't need Aaron Donald, You
- 39:44just need somebody who's a Mike Pannell type.
- 39:48And so and, and Norman Lot would be, he's an explosive player,
- 39:52but he doesn't play a lot of snaps.
- 39:53He didn't have Tennessee, didn't have Arizona State.
- 39:56He's an up the field, one gap guy, but you got to go find
- 39:58somebody that's you can't run Chris Jones into the ground.
- 40:03The pressure rate for the Chiefs when Chris Jones is on the field
- 40:05is 41.7. When he's off the field, it's
- 40:0824.3. Yep.
- 40:11So you got to figure out that. So Yep, for sure.
- 40:14Let's figure out dinner, Mitch. Well, does Trent, do you know
- 40:17Ken's new name? His new nickname?
- 40:19Yeah, you didn't hear this religion.
- 40:22Papa Dippa, OH. Yes.
- 40:24Yeah, Ben Miller is now Papa Dippa and like the Godfather.
- 40:29Yeah, you don't want the Godfather.
- 40:31So when Papa Dippa calls, this is it's this new Papa Dippa dip
- 40:36at Papa John's. It's from the lab in Johnston or
- 40:39the mobile lab that moves around town.
- 40:41But it's this four dip sauce. I mean, it's, it's incredible.
- 40:46So go online and find it, but you're going to want to find it
- 40:48when you find it. And I don't care what game
- 40:51you've got, you know, whether it's Des Moines Christian
- 40:53Defenders or Iowa, Iowa State, Drake, you and I or all the
- 40:56other college teams or, or the pros, find it.
- 40:59Papa Dippa, man, it's it'll change your life.
- 41:02You're sitting next to Papa. Love it.
- 41:05Talk to you next week, bitch. Thank you.
- 41:06Hour 2 coming up Miller in Convent on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 41:09Network.
