- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Live from the T Chanley studios in the west side of Chicago.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Clear your throats, everyone.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Get those pipes clean.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: You're gonna want to sound extra clear and crisp today, and you're gonna be listening to that.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: We have a professional joining us, the voice of Chicago.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: How about this?
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Tim Sinclair is with us.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: Tim, how are you, man?
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: I'm great.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: That was quite the introduction.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure my voice has even warmed up to the specifications you just described.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: Is it early for you?
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: It's early for me.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Uh I have a question for you on some uh like vocal exercise stuff and warm-up stuff.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: But first, I just want to tell everybody, because I know in Chicago, you're known to be the voice of the Bulls, the Bears, the Chicago fire.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Now, also University of Illinois fighting alumni, the Sweet 16 men's basketball team.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Right, ILL.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: How about it, dude?
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: I and I.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: I didn't go there, but I can respect.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: I I told my my sons the other day we were watching the game.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: I was like, never ever take a Sweet 16 for granted.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: It feels like all you got to do is win two games and you're there.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: It shouldn't be that hard.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: But man, it is not an easy thing.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: And so uh we're we're always excited when uh something like that happens.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: How about the um St.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: John's and Iowa, like two, like you would think decent programs, solid.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: They haven't neither of them been since 1999.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: And uh but yeah, you of I, that was huge.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Dude, I I great memory, and I'm not the biggest alinee fan.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: I I I did love the flying alinee back in the day, but I was at that Arizona game at the horizon.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, the uh the 05 comeback 14 down with four to play or whatever.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Were you working that one?
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: I was not, no, I was not in the business at that point.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: I wish I had been.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: That would have been incredible.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: What an incredible gig you have, dude.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And I can't believe uh you even had time to come by here.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: You do have a game tonight?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: I do, yeah.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: Bulls play tonight.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I love the bulls vest you got on.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's that'll represent a little subtle.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Could a citizen buy that?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Is that for the public or is it?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Is it in the team store?
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: Honestly, I don't know.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, I mean they they give it to you, but I a lot of times I get that stuff from the store.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Honestly, I don't know though.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Do you get a ton of merch?
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: It's one of the good parts about the gig.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: Um I tell my sons, uh, eat the free stuff, wear the free stuff.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: So when the when they give it to you, use it.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: And uh and I do for sure.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: I got a couple buddies, uh like they're uh coaching, you know, college level.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And like that's their whole wardrobe.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, they don't have to buy live in a sweatsuit.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: Uh a good friend of mine and my spotter for football games is the head equipment manager at Illinois, and the stuff they he so he's responsible for distributing all that stuff to athletes and coaches, and it is insane.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And the rest of the world's caught up to that.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: We all kind of dress like coaches now.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, look at me, I got my zip up.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Now that they don't have to wear suit and ties, right?
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: You look like a coach.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: I was at a Bulls game this year.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: The coaches are not dialed up at all.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Post.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And there's a million of them.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: It looks like a choir sitting behind the bench.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Exactly what it is sometimes.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: And they're all in like black sweatsuits, basically.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they can uh they technically or usually all wear the same thing, but it used to be suit and ties, and everybody was dressed up and then COVID hit, and they're like, hey, there's someone here to see us anyway, so we're gonna wear what we want, and they kept doing it.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And do you dress up?
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Everyone's just saying, this is what I'll wear to the game, probably.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh that's phenomenal.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Some some do, but that's not my it's not my deal.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: So I think everyone that goes into a stadium, goes to a live event, they hear the PA announcer.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: You know, not that you take it for granted, but it is part of the backdrop.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: But I'm sure a ton of people think, like, how how do you get that gig?
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Like, what a that that's a great, like you must be having a good time.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: Yes, to that last part.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: Um, I how you get it, I don't know.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: It was a complete accident.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: Uh I I thought I was gonna be an architect, honestly.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: That's what I thought.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: My job was gonna be.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: I went to University of Illinois to study architecture.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: And needed to be a good idea.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: What kind of architecture did you want to do?
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Um, it I didn't care.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: At the time, you don't know.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Who was your d did you have an inspiration?
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Were you in a Legos as a kid?
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: My son wants to be an architect and he loves Legos.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to draw I mean I like them, but I really in in sort of early junior high, my uncle was uh he was selling and installing windows, and so he had floor plans around all the time.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: And I saw those and I fell in love with the floor plans.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: Like I just liked how they looked and how how design, you know, in straight lines and right angles, and I guess my OCD enjoyed that.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: Uh and so I started doing them.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: Just I wasn't designing anything in particular, I just wanted to see if I could recreate these floor plans.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: And by early high school, I had builders in the small town I lived in outside of Champaign asking me to do floor plans of houses they were building.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: I guess it would nobody else was doing it, and I'm not sure.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Your designs were different, they weren't like uh Mike Brady.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: You ever see that in the Mike Brady movie?
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Every presentation is the house.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: It was similar, maybe, but I you know, I was fifteen.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I'm doing these floor companies.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: That's wild, dude.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: And they were giving them to the insurance companies and to the banks so that they could insure and fund for these houses.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: And so I thought, well, that's just what I want to do.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: And I got into college, needed a job, got a part-time job in at a radio station.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: I just asked.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Did someone say, like, hey, you got a voice for radio?
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: No, not at the time, really.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Um, but I asked a guy who I knew, he went to my parents' church, said, Hey, just can I help?
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: And he said a a a line that changed my life.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: He said, Do you want to be on the air?
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: And I was like, All right.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: That's not really what I was thinking, but he put me on the air.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: What were you thinking?
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: Because you were in church that you were gonna like, I'm gonna organize CDs or like sweep the floors.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: Like, I just wanted a job that I could do five or six hours a week.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: But he put me on the air and I was terrible, but I loved it.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: And that passion really sort of you know fueled the ability to eventually get here.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: To answer the question you originally asked, um, you work a lot.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you do a lot of games, a lot of college wrestling meets and swimming and diving and stuff that nobody goes to, uh, and eventually start getting some opportunities, and then one day the bulls call.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: When your skin looks better, you feel more confident everywhere you go.

- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Tiege Hanley.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Put your best face forward.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so how did that all come together?
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Is that your first gig in the in the NBA?
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: Uh no, I so my first professional gig was with the fire.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: I'm on season 13, I believe, now.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Uh I won a UTC.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Sounds like you're talking about the uh NBC show, Chicago Fire.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Right, it does.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And I play the PA announcer.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: Peep, I wish that would pay better.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Uh but uh that was my first sort of professional job, and then uh the the Pacers uh in Indiana were looking for uh a guy in 2018, and I ended up getting that job, and I thought I was gonna be there forever.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: These jobs probably don't come open often.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: I say you're much more likely to be the next point guard for the Bulls than you are to be the next PA guy for the Bulls.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: I mean there's been three of us since 76.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: So Ray Clay, Ray Clay, Tommy Edwards, and me.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: Steve Scott did it for a couple years in there, uh, sort of as a fill-in between Ray and when Tommy came back.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Um, but they don't come open very often.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: And with the Bears, Jim Rebant did it from 83, I think, to when I took over.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: So if you don't get it as soon as it comes comes open, you don't get it.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: And um, so I was with the Pacers, and both of those jobs came open at the same time.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: And I went, I would be a fool not to to go for it.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: And so I reached out to the Bears and the Bulls reached out to me, and there's like auditions, you gotta rehearse, you gotta some of those.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: Although uh the Bulls was interesting because it happened right as COVID hit.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: So I had done the the All-Star Game in Chicago, but as the I was the Pacers PA guy at the time.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: But when the All-Star game was here, I did the voice for all that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: And so that was kind of a pseudo-audition for both teams, I think, although I didn't really know it at the time.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: And then the world ended because of COVID.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: I ended up in the bubble with the NBA, so I was down there calling games at Disney World, and that's when the Bulls and the Bears both basically said, Yeah, we want you, but I had to officially audition for the Bulls in my closet in the Disney World hotel room.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: No, that whole thing and record on my code.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: But a lot of people get rolls doing that.
- 9:08unknown: Right.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be in the closet of a Disney hotel.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: I'm the only one I know of, but I'm sure it's happened.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: That's that's insane, dude.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: That that you get you get started, now all of a sudden you're in the bubble.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: And what's that experience like?
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Are you able to are you networking during that?
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Are you meeting a lot of people, or are you guys really just kind of right to the room, right to the game?
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was it was pretty groundhog day-ish.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: Uh it was but the weird thing was it was just NBA players, NBA officials, a few league brass, and then Is there any drama?
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: Not that I saw nothing behind the scenes?
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: I'm sure there was some drama, but I didn't see much.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: But like we'd work a couple games a day, yeah, most every day.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: We'd have a day off here and there.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: And I heard you say in an interview that you rehearse before each game.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Is that true?
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: With the Bulls, yeah.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so what is that like?
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: Um there are so many moving parts of a game.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: There's lights and sound and video board and me and the directors and the people who are running stuff on and off the court and games that they're gonna play during timeouts.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: I get it, dude.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: I run a podcast.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of moving parts.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: And and because of that, um, and they're not all the always the same people.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: I'm always the same, but a lot of people move in and out, like they work, you know, 10 games or 15 games.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: So to make sure everybody's on the same page and make sure we finish what we say we're gonna finish in the two out two minutes and forty-five seconds you have in a in a timeout.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: And the names have changed too.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: These early PA announcers had it easy, right?
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Everyone's Cliff Evans, Jim Scott.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: The names are different.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Now you got uh whole world, it's a global game.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Sandro Mammukelis.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that one I just Sandro Mammukelish Vili is probably my favorite to say in the NBA right now.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: One more time.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Sandro Mamukelishvili.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: And he used to play he used to play for Milwaukee, and I think he's with So he had he had the most difficult name on Milwaukee over.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Giannis is on the Cooper.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: At one time there was Giannis and his brother.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: So two.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: Who's stitching those jerseys up there?
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't have room for Carpal tunnel.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: My favorite name of all time, she another Greek player, she played for Illinois women's basketball for a couple years, and I did that for a while.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Uh her name was Nancy, which was that part was easy, or Anastasia, I think was her technical name.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: And then uh technical name.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: But we called her Nancy because her last name was Panayatopulu and Drittopulu.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: Holy wow, wow.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: It was a hyphenated last name that would not fit on a jersey, so it just said Pana Gatopulu.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: Um so it just said Nancy.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: So Nancy for three or something.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: But no, I I wanted to get it right.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: It's her name, and I'm not gonna make it different because it's hard.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: And you're saying the name each time someone scores.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: So you gotta be you're watching, you're dialed in.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, ideally, yeah.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: Are you do you have a drink when you're watching the game?
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: I mean of water, yeah.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I warm, lukewarm?
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: No, I'm I usually have some water and then something carbonated, something about the bubbles like helps, but I'm not really a warm drink.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: Unless I'm sick, yeah.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: I I will try to avoid warm drinks.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: And you ever have like a time where like your your voice is shot?
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: You're like, oh man, I'm um not really.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Every once in a while you get sick and you just it sounds a little different or hurts to push through.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Um when you do the I do the Illinois High School State Championships, and so you Thursday you have six games, Friday you have six games, Saturday you have four games.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: So after whatever that is, sixteen games in three days, I'm tired for sure.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, I bet.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: And it, you know, but your voice is a lot of.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Dude, I went to Marist High School.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: They just won their first state championship.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: Congratulations.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: How about that?
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Only the second private school in the city of Chicago to ever do that.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: That's like a hoosier story.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Sure, I sure it is.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: It'll be a movie soon, I'm sure.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: We'll be in it.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: So you got the uh the basketball, uh basketball game, very fast-paced.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: You're calling every bucket.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: What do you call the made baskets?
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: Made baskets, um, free throws, fouls, uh things that the officials need to relay to the teams or to the crowd.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: Now they have a mic which do you go a little extra for a three?
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: Do you have what's your three?
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: What is that?
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: So um with Illinois, it's always been three points, Illinois, and then whoever made the basket.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: With the bull, uh NBA is so fast, you almost don't have time for all of that information because the other teams back down the court.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: So it's three points, and then whoever made the basket.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: So um yeah.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: Love that, dude.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you have simple but hopefully effective.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: And then a football game, what do you call them?
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: You call them more.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: It's actually more because in basketball you don't call when something doesn't happen.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: But in football, if Caleb Williams throws it in completion, you're saying incomplete pass intended for Roma Dunce, second and ten for the bears to their own 25-yard line.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: And so every single play Are you ever tempted to do that in basketball?
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: Like Brick.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: Miss Shot.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: Sandrew Mamakillasvili.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: What was he thinking?
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, I had it a boss who used to tell me you can say anything you want to one time.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: That would be my one time, I think.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Which one do you I mean, I don't want to put you on a spot, which one do you enjoy more?
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: They're each different, gotta be uh at the Bears game, you're inside, you have warmth, you don't have to feel the elements.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Correct, which is ideal.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: And you uh you don't have to travel, obviously, right?
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: No, I know which allows me to do four or five different sports at the same time because I just have to deal with home schedules.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: I I don't know that I have a favorite.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: I love the environment of basketball and that I'm on the court experiencing the game like a player.
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: So when the crowd gets big, I did in high school.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: I maybe could have in college if I'd not gone to the University of Illinois.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Uh but uh was it tough in high school to be designing banks and post offices while you're on the city?
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: It would have been illegal to do anything else.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: Um I didn't feel like it was at the time.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: Um I didn't I didn't have much of a life outside of extracurriculars, but but that's okay.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Tease Hanley has changed my life.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Skin has been amazing.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Uh, we're the number one men's skincare routine in America.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: When I got here, they go, uh, we're just waiting for the podcast guest.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: We know you're here for pictures.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: I thought you were a model?
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you guys, he's glowing.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: In fact, Ape Bragazi was like, your skin's awesome.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: Just like I look forward to like, oh, I'm washing my face before I go to sleep.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: I think we haven't had any 40-year-olds on the podcast, and I said, I'm 50.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And everyone goes, What?
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: T Shanley.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: It's the way we face the day.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: I saw you were a finalist at a really young age for the Cubs.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: There was like a open call?
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they did a YouTube cut first really uh to my knowledge, first time anybody ever done it.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: The Cubs, all of a sudden, like in February, were looking for a new PA guy.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Um, the other guy sort of quit last second, had been doing it for 20 years.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: And I was doing morning radio and I was like, this would be a great bit.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: Let's just do a bit of me auditioning for this.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: We'll talk about it on the air, we'll go through the process.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: And we wanted to let our listeners know, because we serve champagne in Chicago, like you could do this too.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: So I submit, I literally recorded this video at 5 a.m.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: before the morning show started and sent it in.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: We talked about on the air and I forgot completely about it.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: And then all of a sudden, March I think 11th, 2011, I get a phone call from Joe Rios at the Cubs, and he says, Hey, this is Joe, wondered if you'd be interested in coming to Wrigley Field to uh to audition.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: I was like, Yeah, yeah, let me let me do that.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: So I went up, 24 others were there.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, just this big casting call.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: I I imagine it very much like an LA casting call where everybody's just sitting on these chairs around this room and you're waiting to go out there.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Are you talking to each other at all?
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: A little, yeah.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: And every I mean Do you use a different voice?
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: These no I didn't well like talk like Mickey Mouse, like a lot of guys would be how this guy get in here.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: What are they looking for?
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: This was a pissing contest for a lot of these dudes.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Like they were overdoing it.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: Hi, how are you?
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: It's like, all right, come on.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: And I would that take a lot of effort to do that just now?
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Is that no you talk from a different place in your chest and are you really dialed into that?
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: The diaphragm?
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: That is a thing.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: I don't think about it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: How do you know you're doing it?
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: You can your abs tighten when you do it.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: And that yeah, you just um I could so I can go from this to this pretty pretty quickly.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: Um see, I blow my voice out if I don't have a monitor.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: If I can't hear myself back.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: Well, that does happen if I don't have headphones on at a game.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm trying to hear myself through the system.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: And so then it's not it it's different.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: The resonance is different than volume.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: So I'm talking at the same volume, but the resonance is going down.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: Now, when you can't hear yourself, now you're you're sort of screaming through it, and that's what that's what'll blow your voice out.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Are you a good singer?
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: I can sing, I haven't done it in a long time, but you want to I do not.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: That one I would do.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: That one I would do.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: If they if they uh but the problem is the uh the relationship with the Cubs now that I'm a Bulls employee is a little different because the ownership group owns the White Sox and they're competitors in the baseball space.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: So I have done four or five um White Sox games, but uh I'm not sure I'll have an opportunity to do a Cubs game anytime.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: You filled in for a gene?
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: I have, yeah.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he does a lot of work too.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: He does, yeah.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: He and I we're like the president and vice president.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: We're not allowed to be on the same plane at the same time.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Um so we're always if we're we're rarely in the same spot because we're usually working opposite events.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: We're filling in for each other.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: You ever crush some heaters with him?
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: I do uh he can um he always has an exit plan for the building so he can he can go smoke.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: I I've don't drink, don't smoke, no drugs.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: No, I'd like it's just you're like Gerardo.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: I guess I guess.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: I just uh it's my some guys it works.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Gene, obviously it works for him, but uh was a Rico Suave reference.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: That's a verse.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Anyone you guys all get that one?
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: I remember I mean come on.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: It's a blast from the past, but I remember it.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: I was alive for sure.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you we're probably close to the same age.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be 50 this year.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: I am uh almost 48, so yeah, close.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: Oh dude.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: It's are you a Xennial too, or are you a little past that?
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: No, I don't know what that is.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: So that's the the the little it's like a six-year window between Gen X and Millennials where we did not grow up with the internet at all.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: But like as soon as we hit college.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: I feel that for sure.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was my experience.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: As soon as you hit college, then like No, I was out of college.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: So I was like already like I'm already obsolete.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: I'm like a don't make these anymore.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: I feel like we played outside till the streetlights went on.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: You know, your parents would call you in the streetlights.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but but then you go to college and you have the internet and an email address, and so it's like a very split existence for how you grew up and how you've lived your adult life.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: So Yeah, it is wild.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: It's like I feel that with uh not even just the kids, but people like 10 years younger, 15 years younger, big, big difference.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Um all right.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: I wanted to ask you about the vocal exercises because I'm curious about that.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Do you have a uh do you have a thing that you warm up with?
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: Anything that you're gonna be disappointed with my answer.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: No, good.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: No, I'm not disappointed.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I I just have to ask someone else to be on the show and I can finally learn how to warm up my.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: The voice is a muscle.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: I was saying that a little earlier, and the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: And so literally all I do for a living is talk, and so I feel like I've strengthened that muscle over time.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: Doesn't mean it wasn't we'll get tired, it won't give out on you, but um just talking gets you know warms warms me up.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: So I've like that when we started, I was a little scratchy, and I feel like I'm getting better, and by the time this is over, it'll be perfect.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: So what is your uh the like stank that you put on your bull's intros that you're most known for, you think?
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the bulls intros are interesting because to me they're the greatest introductions in the history of sports.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: And a lot of people have copied this.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: Is it documented that they were the first ones to turn the lights off, bring the spotlights?
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: They were the and in it in the old stadium.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Did you have that experience?
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: Because I I grew up.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: I was I never went to Chicago Stadium, no.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: I went to Chicago Stadium a few times and it was darker.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: And it was you know, the no video component.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: Because the video does light up the correct arena a little bit.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: Uh so the spotlights were that much more dramatic.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Um especially like it just looked like a little corner of the stadium was lighting up and you know, I never had good seats.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm up in the in the rafters.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: But this is a a special intro.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and so it the the funny part is it it has so little, if anything, to do with me.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Like I'm the I'm the caretaker of it right now.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: You remember Ray Clay getting like he was like, you know, he probably w wasn't paying for a dinner in town.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: He was like celeb stands.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: And that's my point.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: He and Tommy created it.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: Ray made it famous in the 90s when NBC started to carry those introductions, and thanks to Michael Jordan.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: Um and and now it's so famous because of that.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: And I'm the guy who gets to do it, and I am forever grateful for that.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: And I I love that opposing players and every fan in the stands has their phone up during those introductions because for a lot of them, not the players, but for a lot of people in those stands, that's the only time they're gonna get to see it.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: They came, yeah, to see a basketball game, but but that's a big part of the draw.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: And so for me, I wanted to pay respect to the history of it.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: So the the man in the middle, and the eh now, that whole thing, like that, we're we're doing that because it's it's history.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: But I I also want it's also me, and I wanted to put my spin on it.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: And so that's been kind of a you know, you walk with fear and trembling, stepping into legends' shoes.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you gotta make it your own.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: At the same time.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: And and hope to God that people like it.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: Um, and in this day and age, if they don't, they're gonna tell you, and if they really don't, you're gonna be looking for a job because it's just one of those performative things that people need to like.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: So I when I already have all the jobs.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: The best part about T Shanley is the results.

- 24:16SPEAKER_02: So when I auditioned, I didn't go back and listen to Ray.
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: I didn't go back and listen to Tommy.
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: I just did it as I remembered it.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: With my how I would do it in the driveway.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Are you allowed to do it?
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: Are you allowed to do pieces of it?
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Are you want to give us a little now that you are warmed up, I feel it's a good one.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: Heads up to whoever's on the volume control.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Watch the headphones, boys.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: Uh, if you're in your car, turn this down a little bit.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Get both hands on the wheel.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: Everybody helps, but but prepare yourself.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: I'm sure we don't have licensing for that.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: So now the starting lineup for your Chicago.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: Come on.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: I got some chills there.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Beautiful.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thanks.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Do you ever do that in the when you wake up in the morning and you're looking in the mirror like American Psycho?
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, we got two little girls in the house who occasionally will mess with them, you know.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Um I should have asked you about your family.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to get too personal.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: Oh no, it's all right.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: You are a public address announcer.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: True, it should be public, right?
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: Everything's public.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Um so I have two older boys, they're 18 and almost 17.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: And so they've lived their lives sitting on my lap when they were little in press boxes and sitting front row at Alana games.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: That's great.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: So that's been and they're both huge sports fans.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: So that's that's been great.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: Um I my my wife had two little girls when we married, so we're kind of a blended family.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: They were two and four when I met them.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: They're seven and nine now.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: And they they love Benny the Bull.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: They're not huge sports fans, um, at least in terms of following the NBA, but they're big Benny fans, and thankfully they're still big me fans, so they like if they see me on TV or they can come to a game.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: Um, we we'll still use the use the voice every once in a while.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: That's comes in handy when they're in trouble, too.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Can you tell them to uh subscribe to the YouTube channel here that we got?
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: I will.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: They're probably gonna have a screen, right?
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: And you mentioned Benny the Bull.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: You were in a commercial with Benny the Bull, weren't you?
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: I was, yes.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: State Farm called uh a couple of years ago and were like, hey, I would throw that.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: You see State Farm, don't you usually just throw it the voicemail?
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Like, oh my god, you're trying to sell it.
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: It was I say called.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: The first was an email.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: And this was a Saturday morning email, and I almost hit delete because I assumed I have State Farm insurance, but like I assumed it was junk.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: But something about the title, I was like, I that seems different.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: So I opened it, and it was essentially, hey, can you be in Los Angeles Monday?
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: This was a Saturday.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: Can you be in Los Angeles Monday to shoot a commercial?
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: And I was like, maybe.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: So we were closing on our house Tuesday.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: The shoot was Tuesday.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: I was like, well, we're gonna have to get some power of attorney signed and all sorts of stuff.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Later, babe.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: Yep, I blend the family on your own.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: I showed her the email.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: I'm like, you think it's okay for me to leave?
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: She's like, Yeah, that'd be fine.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: And so uh I flew out Monday.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: We shot uh all of Tuesday morning.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: Um the funny thing about that was it was the one of the the State Farm jingle commercials where they have people sing the jingle.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: Well, when we were recording this, none of those were out yet.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: I didn't know that was a thing.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: The Jimmy Fallon one hadn't aired, the ludicrous one hadn't aired.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: And so I get there, and the the director's like, okay, so you're gonna do this, and most of the lines were mine, which I also thought was weird.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: Like you've never seen it.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: He can't talk, and so it was Jake had like line at the end.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: Jake was there, and then one actor.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: Is this the original Jake?
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: The OG no, no, no.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: This was this was the the new Jake.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Kevin.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: Kevin.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: Um and who's from Chicago, by the way.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: And uh he is, yeah, he's huge.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: So he's a big Bulls fan anyway, so it worked out great.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: And he's an actor for Kevin Miles says actually.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's cool.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Does he come out to games?
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: Um occasionally.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: He's been a few now.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: He's like, yeah, you know, he's such slub status, it's hard to get to get anywhere uh incognito.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: But um, they they were telling me, all right, you're gonna do this, then say this, then look here, then this is gonna happen, and then you sing the jingle.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: And I was like, excuse me, what?
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, say I do what?
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: Like, then you sing the jingle.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: I'm like, sing?
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: They're like, Yeah, it'll be fine.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: I was like, You've you've never heard me sing.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: And they said, Well, it's supposed to sound awkward.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: I was like, that will not be a problem.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: One take?
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, we did like 75 takes, and not because I was terrible, I don't think.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: Um just because they want every angle, every potential option, slower, faster, higher pitch, lower pitch.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: They just wanted to see what sounded best.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: And so, and Chris Paul was on, so like he had all sorts of people there shooting other stuff.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: So it's Benny and Jake and Chris and the Lopez brothers were around, and like, and I'm just like, like a good neighbor, safe arm is there.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Okay, slower, like a good neighbor, safe arm is there, lower.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: And you just do it over and over and over and over again.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: And eventually they come up with a 15-second commercial that they air, and I it When was that erin?
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: Was it uh so it started during the 23 All-Star Game?
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: Um, and aired for about six months.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: Uh and were you the PA guy for that all-star game too?
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: I was, yeah.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: What a weekend for you.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was right.
