- 0:00All right, let's get into this. We are doing a deep dive on
- 0:03Prague today, the capital of Bohemia, the city of 100 Spires.
- 0:08I mean, this is a city that just completely captures the
- 0:10imagination and it shows the numbers.
- 0:14We're talking over 8 million tourists a year now.
- 0:17And that number, that staggering number, is exactly why we need
- 0:22to have this conversation. Our mission today is pretty
- 0:25specific. We're essentially stress testing
- 0:28Prague's holiday historic charm. A stress test.
- 0:31I like that, yeah. We need to figure out if that
- 0:34fairy tale image, you know, the one you see on Instagram, all
- 0:36misty and perfect, if it actually holds up to the reality
- 0:39of modern tourism. We're talking crowds, inflation,
- 0:42medieval streets. All of it.
- 0:45The Ledger is open because Prague has.
- 0:47I mean, it's changed so much in just the last few years.
- 0:49It's not that super cheap getaway it once was.
- 0:52Not at all. It's aiming for something
- 0:53different now. So we want to give you the
- 0:55shortcut. Let's start with three big I'd
- 0:58say contrarian takes the things people almost always get wrong
- 1:01right out of the gate. OK, let's do it.
- 1:03And #1 is a big one, and it's about respect, really.
- 1:06Prague is not in Eastern Europe. Right.
- 1:09Do not say this to a Czech person.
- 1:10Please don't. I mean, just look at a map.
- 1:12It's West of Vienna. It's firmly historically,
- 1:16culturally central Europe. It was part of the Holy Roman
- 1:19Empire, the Austro Hungarian Empire.
- 1:21Its historical ties are much more western, even with the
- 1:24whole Iron Curtain period. And that history, that
- 1:27distinction, it really matters to checks.
- 1:29Understanding that helps you understand the whole city, its
- 1:32architecture, its independence. It's just the proper context.
- 1:35Absolutely. Geographically true, culturally
- 1:37vital. OK.
- 1:39So what's #2 this one hits you right in the holiday markets.
- 1:43It really does. We're talking about the
- 1:45Treblenick. The chimney cake.
- 1:46The chimney cake. It's everywhere.
- 1:48It's this spiral dough roasted over coals, covered in sugar.
- 1:52Smells amazing. Often filled with ice cream or
- 1:54Nutella, right? Exactly.
- 1:55It looks so traditional, but The thing is, yeah, it's not.
- 1:59It's a tourist import. So it's not some ancient
- 2:01bohemian recipe. Not at all.
- 2:03It's more of a Hungarian and Slovak thing that was very
- 2:07cleverly marketed in Prague in the last decade or so,
- 2:09specifically for tourists. It's basically a sugar doughnut
- 2:13designed for Instagram. That's brutal but true.
- 2:17It looks great, but it's not the deep cultural experience you
- 2:20might think it is. Not in the slightest.
- 2:22And the third contrarian take is about money.
- 2:25The old beer is cheaper than waterline.
- 2:28Well, yes. And that could still be true.
- 2:31It's sort of the one economic outlier.
- 2:33But the bigger picture is way more complicated now.
- 2:35You can find a world class pint for say $2.50 and then walk 50
- 2:41feet onto the Old Town square and pay $7.00 for a mediocre
- 2:44coffee. That's a London price.
- 2:46Point it is, and that signals really high inflation in this
- 2:49this crazy variable value. It all depends on where you're
- 2:52standing. Your location by just a few 100
- 2:54feet can double or triple your cost.
- 2:56We'll get into the why of that later, but this all leads to the
- 2:59one major downside, the big hurdle for a lot of people, the
- 3:03crowds. I mean, this needs to be
- 3:05underlined. We're not talking about a city
- 3:07that's just a bit busy. No.
- 3:09We're talking Disney World level density, thousands of people
- 3:13packed into a medieval St. grid that was designed for maybe a
- 3:16horse and cart. If you have any claustrophobia,
- 3:19the Christmas markets will. They will test you.
- 3:22They absolutely will. And yet, despite all that, we're
- 3:25going to make a pretty bold claim today.
- 3:27I think we have to. Despite the crowds, despite the
- 3:30traps, Prague might still be the single most atmospherically
- 3:35perfect city in the world for a winter trip.
- 3:37There's a moodiness to it that's just unmatched.
- 3:40That's a huge claim. So our road map is clear.
- 3:43We're going to reset your expectations, give you
- 3:45logistical hacks, how to save money right from the airport.
- 3:48We'll breakdown budgets, point out the traps, and then wrap it
- 3:51all up at the final verdict for every kind of traveler.
- 3:53Let's start with that context reset, because using a pre 2020
- 3:57guidebook for Prague right now is, well, it's a recipe for
- 4:00disaster. So let's reset that context.
- 4:02What has actually happened in Prague in the last few years?
- 4:05Why does it feel so different? Well, you've got this perfect
- 4:08storm really. There's the huge post pandemic
- 4:11travel boom hitting everywhere, but it's been particularly
- 4:14intense in Central Europe and that's combined with some pretty
- 4:17serious inflation in the Czech Republic.
- 4:19So that famous $1.00 pint? That's basically a museum piece
- 4:23now. In the city center, yes, it's a
- 4:25memory. And beyond that, the city is
- 4:28actively trying to rebrand itself.
- 4:30Rebrand how? For years it had this reputation
- 4:33as the you know, the cheap booze weekend spot, the capital of
- 4:38stag parties. Right, I remember that.
- 4:39The tourism board is actively trying to shed that image.
- 4:43They want to attract what they call the high culture traveler,
- 4:46the person who's there for the opera, the galleries, the
- 4:48incredible architecture, the new fine dining scene.
- 4:51And attracting that kind of traveler means higher prices.
- 4:54Exactly. It's a strategic shift and that
- 4:56shift really clashes with what you see on social media.
- 5:00The Instagram effect. You see these reels of empty
- 5:02snowy cobblestone streets, golden lanterns glowing.
- 5:06It looks so peaceful. It's a complete fantasy.
- 5:09First of all, the reality check on the weather.
- 5:12It doesn't really snow like that very often in December anymore.
- 5:15You're much more likely to get a cold, damp Gray day.
- 5:18And second, the empty streets part.
- 5:20That's the big one. Those streets are packed
- 5:22shoulder to shoulder. You have to manage your
- 5:24expectation of solitude down to 0 during peak hours.
- 5:27You are sharing this history with 10s of thousands of other
- 5:30people. Which is fine if you know it's
- 5:32coming. But if you walk onto the Charles
- 5:34Bridge at noon, expecting a quiet, reflective moment.
- 5:37You will be profoundly disappointed, maybe even angry.
- 5:41But this is where it gets interesting, because even with
- 5:44the crowds, there's something real there, the weight of its
- 5:47history. Why does Prague feel so much
- 5:50older, so much more authentic than other European cities?
- 5:53World War 2. It's as simple as that.
- 5:55Prague is one of the very few major European capitals that was
- 5:59not flattened by bombs. The historic core was.
- 6:03It was largely spared. That is so the crucial point.
- 6:05When you go to, say, Warsaw, you're looking at a beautiful,
- 6:09heroic reconstruction of its Old Town.
- 6:11A meticulous reconstruction or parts of Berlin which were
- 6:14completely rebuilt. In Prague, when you're standing
- 6:18in the Old Town square, you were looking at the original Gothic
- 6:21buildings, the original Renaissance and Baroque facades.
- 6:24It's not a copy. It's not a copy.
- 6:26That stone has been there for 6-7 hundred years.
- 6:30It's a layered cake of genuine, uninterrupted history.
- 6:34That's why it has that dark, imposing, authentic character.
- 6:38It hasn't been scrubbed clean and remade.
- 6:40It just is. And that preserved history is
- 6:42the backdrop for the Christmas. Market exactly, which are
- 6:45visually stunning, maybe the most beautiful in Europe because
- 6:47of that architectural backdrop. Yeah, but you have to be smart
- 6:50about what you're buying. Right.
- 6:51You said they're commercialized. What does that mean in practice?
- 6:54It means you shouldn't go expecting to find, you know, a
- 6:57unique handcrafted ornament made by an artisan in a small
- 7:01bohemian village. What will you find?
- 7:03You'll find mass produced ornaments, generic souvenirs and
- 7:06lots of grilled sausage, which is fine, but the focus shouldn't
- 7:10be on the shopping, it should be on the atmosphere.
- 7:12The smell of the mulled wine. The Spa Rack.
- 7:15Right. The Spajak, the Cinnamon, the
- 7:17lights reflecting off those ancient dark stone buildings.
- 7:22That is the product. The mood is what you're there
- 7:25for, not necessarily the stuff in the stalls.
- 7:27OK, so context is set. It's historic, it's crowded, and
- 7:31it can be pricey. Now let's get into the
- 7:34logistics, starting with the moment you land, which is the
- 7:371st place you can either waste money or pull off a really smart
- 7:40hack. The pain point starts right at
- 7:42the airport, Vaclav Havel or PRG.
- 7:46It's strange for such a major capital, but there's no direct
- 7:49train link to the city center. No train so you can't just hop
- 7:52on and go. Nope.
- 7:53You've got to use buses or cars, so let's break down the public
- 7:56transport options first. Go for it.
- 7:58Option one is the easy one, the Airport Express bus, the AE.
- 8:01It cost about 120 corona, so 5 bucks €5.
- 8:04It's direct, it's comfortable, takes you right to the main
- 8:06train station. OK, that sounds fine.
- 8:08It is fine, but there's a superior hack, the one we
- 8:11recommend for anyone who wants value and efficiency.
- 8:13The 30% savings hack. This is it.
- 8:16You ignore the express bus and you look for the regular city
- 8:19bus number 119. OK, Bus 119.
- 8:22It's clean, it runs all the time.
- 8:24It has luggage racks. You take that bus to the very
- 8:27last stop, which is called Nadrazi Villas Levin.
- 8:31That stop is a dedicated transfer point to the Metro to
- 8:34Line A, the Green Line. And the cost difference is the
- 8:37key here. It's huge.
- 8:38The total ticket for the bus and the Metro ride is 40 Karuna.
- 8:42That's less than two US dollars. The whole journey takes about 40
- 8:46minutes, so it's not even slower.
- 8:47You're just being smarter. And one critical step here, you
- 8:51have to buy your ticket in the airport arrivals hall before you
- 8:54get on the bus, and then you have to validate it in the
- 8:56little machine on the bus. Yes, that validation stamp is
- 8:59everything. We'll come back to that.
- 9:01But that single ticket covers your whole journey into the
- 9:04city. Now what about taxis?
- 9:06A huge warning here, do not under any circumstances just
- 9:09grab a taxi from the curb at the airport.
- 9:12You were just asking for trouble overcharging scenic routes, the
- 9:15infamous turbo meters. The turbo meter a classic scam.
- 9:19A classic If you must have a car, use a rideshare app, Uber
- 9:23or Bolt. But honestly, the public transit
- 9:26hack is faster, cheaper, and a great introduction to how good
- 9:30Prague's system is. So you get into the center, you
- 9:33step out of the metro. What's the first physical
- 9:35impression? It's the verticality.
- 9:37You just look up and see all these Spires.
- 9:39It feels dark, gothic, a little bit imposing.
- 9:43I've always. Said it feels like Gotham City,
- 9:44but if it was designed by a fancy pastry chef.
- 9:48It's ornate, but also kind of Moody.
- 9:50That's a great description. And then you feel it under your
- 9:52feet. The cobblestone trap.
- 9:54Oh, the cobblestones. If I can give one piece of your
- 9:56advice, it's this. Do not bring a cheap roller bag
- 10:00with those little plastic wheels.
- 10:01The sound alone is just it's the sound of tourists suffering that
- 10:06clack, clack, clack over those huge, uneven stones.
- 10:08It's awful. You're fighting the bag the
- 10:10whole way. Your arm hurts.
- 10:11My advice, use a backpack or if you have to roll, get a bag with
- 10:14big heavy duty rubber wheels. It makes a world of difference
- 10:17and the atmosphere is just so thick, especially in winter.
- 10:19You have this distinct smell of like coal smoke from some of the
- 10:23older buildings mixed with cinnamon from the markets.
- 10:27An architectural density is just wild.
- 10:29You can walk 10 meters and see a Romanesque cellar, a Gothic
- 10:33church tower and an Art Nouveau hotel facade all right next to
- 10:37each other. It's like centuries of history
- 10:40compressed into these tiny, winding lanes.
- 10:43It feels like you're discovering something new around every
- 10:45corner. Until you hit the Charles Bridge
- 10:48at 2:00 in the afternoon. And that is where the fairy tale
- 10:51can come to a screeching halt. We did this first day full of
- 10:54excitement. It was a complete disaster.
- 10:56Wasn't bridge, it was a pedestrian traffic jam.
- 10:59We couldn't even see the statues.
- 11:00All you see is the back of someone's winter coat.
- 11:03It is total gridlock. So the advice has to be do not
- 11:07judge Prague by the Charles Bridge in the middle of the day.
- 11:10If that's your first taste, you'll hate it.
- 11:12You have to save that experience for a much, much smarter time.
- 11:16So now that we're in the city, let's talk about money.
- 11:19We need to decode the corona and more importantly, talk about the
- 11:23traps. Right.
- 11:24Let's open the books on the Czech Corona, the CZK.
- 11:27The number one rule, and it's not negotiable, is you always
- 11:31pay in Corona. Even if a shop says they take
- 11:34euros. Especially then they will give
- 11:37you a terrible made-up exchange rate that pads their profit.
- 11:40Always, always use the local currency.
- 11:43And that brings us to the Exchange offices.
- 11:45The big zero percent Commission signs you see everywhere.
- 11:49That is the oldest trick in the book.
- 11:51It's technically true. They don't charge a separate fee
- 11:53called Commission. Instead, they build a massive
- 11:56fee into the awful rate they give you.
- 11:58So you might see the real rate is, say 25 koruna to the euro.
- 12:03And they'll be offering you 18. I've seen it.
- 12:05You're losing over 20% of your money before you even spend it.
- 12:08It's a huge loss. I admit I fell for that my first
- 12:10time. I thought I was being smart,
- 12:11avoiding the fee. Everyone does, so the fix 2 good
- 12:15options. First, only use ATM's from
- 12:18actual reputable banks. Look for names like KP, Wi-fi's
- 12:22and ASOB. And when you're at the ATM,
- 12:24there's a crucial step. A vital step the machine will
- 12:27offer to do the currency conversion for you in your home
- 12:31currency. It will look helpful.
- 12:33You must always, always decline this offer.
- 12:36Choose to be charged in the local currency in CZK.
- 12:40Let your own bank do the conversion.
- 12:42Their rate will be infinitely better.
- 12:43And the second option if you have cash to change.
- 12:46There's a well known, reputable independent exchange place on
- 12:50Caprova Street right near the Old Town square.
- 12:52It's famous among travelers for having fair, transparent rates.
- 12:56That's the one place to go if you need to change cash.
- 12:59OK, so let's get into daily budgets.
- 13:01Prague can work for a whole range of travelers.
- 13:03Let's break it down into 3 bands.
- 13:05Let's start with the low budget or backpacker.
- 13:07Your goal here is to keep accommodation and food costs at
- 13:10rock bottom, and Prague has some truly great hostels like the
- 13:14Roadhouse or Sir Toby's. So what's the cost for a dorm
- 13:17bed? You're looking at about 600 to
- 13:19900 karuna a night. That's around 25 to 40 U.S.
- 13:22dollars. Really good value.
- 13:24But the real hack for food is the jadilna.
- 13:26The local canteen. We have to explain this because
- 13:29it's a total game changer. It really is.
- 13:31Think of it like a traditional no frills cafeteria, mostly for
- 13:34local workers. You grab a tray, you go down the
- 13:36line, you point it what looks good.
- 13:39It's all classic Czech food. And it's mainly for lunch,
- 13:41right? Almost exclusively for lunch,
- 13:43yeah. Usually from about 11:00 AM to
- 13:452:00 PM you can get a huge filling meal, soup a main odd
- 13:50for maybe 150 Corona. It's like 6 or 7 dollars.
- 13:54So if you do that for your main meal, your daily food cost is
- 13:57tiny. Exactly.
- 13:58You can eat really well for about $13 a day, so your total
- 14:01daily spend all in can be as low as 50 to $60.00.
- 14:06Amazing. OK, Next up, the mid range
- 14:09couple. This is probably most people
- 14:10listening. Right.
- 14:11You want a nice private room. You want to eat at good
- 14:13restaurants. The key advice here is do not
- 14:16stay in Prague, one the main tourist district.
- 14:19The value just isn't there. It's not.
- 14:21Look at neighborhoods like Vinorati or Letna.
- 14:23They're beautiful, full of locals, great restaurants, and
- 14:26only a 10 minute tram ride from the center.
- 14:29You'll pay around 110 to $150.00 a night for a great room instead
- 14:32of double that in the Old Town. And for food, you're looking for
- 14:35traditional dinners like Svichgava or Gulasha.
- 14:38Exactly. And you're still using the lunch
- 14:40special, the Deni menu, to keep costs down midday.
- 14:44Excluding your hotel, a couple could have a fantastic time on
- 14:47about 180 to $220 a day. OK, finally, luxury high end.
- 14:52This is where Prague offers maybe the best value in the
- 14:56world. You can stay in converted 14th
- 14:58century monasteries, places like the Mandarin Oriental or the
- 15:01Augustine, for around $450 a night and up.
- 15:05Which is a lot of money, but compared to a similar historic
- 15:08property in Paris or Rome. It's a bargain.
- 15:10The level of luxury, history and service you get for that price
- 15:13is just It's on another level. Your high end dollar goes so
- 15:17much further in Prague. Let's put some specific holiday
- 15:19price tags on things Mulled wine at the market.
- 15:22About 90 Karuna, $4, a classical music concert in a church, which
- 15:27is a fantastic holiday experience.
- 15:29I love doing that. It's the best.
- 15:30That'll be 22 to $35. And the big ticket item, the
- 15:33Prague Castle Circuit ticket, It's about $20.
- 15:36And is that castle ticket worth it?
- 15:38100% just for Saint Vitus Cathedral alone.
- 15:43That is a non negotiable, must see piece of Gothic
- 15:47architecture. It's breathtaking.
- 15:49OK, let's circle back to the beer economy.
- 15:51Why is beer still so cheap? It's this amazing mix of culture
- 15:55and tax policy. Beer is considered a staple, A
- 15:59cultural product, not a luxury, so it has very low excise taxes
- 16:03and preferential VAT rates. Whereas a bottle of water in a
- 16:06restaurant is an imported marked up good.
- 16:09Precisely. It has higher taxes and a bigger
- 16:12markup, so it's not just a cute saying.
- 16:14It is often fiscally smarter to order a beer than a bottle of of
- 16:18water. And on the flip side of value,
- 16:20what's 1 activity trap to absolutely avoid?
- 16:22The standard one hour river cruise.
- 16:24Don't do it. Why not?
- 16:25It's a tourist factory. You're packed in, you listen to
- 16:28a boring recorded narration and you don't see anything you can't
- 16:31see. Better by walking.
- 16:32For a better experience, rent one of the little electric boats
- 16:34yourself or book the jazz boat for an evening cruise with live
- 16:37music that turns it into a real event.
- 16:39OK, we've covered the mood and the money.
- 16:41Now let's get into timing more traps and how to actually find
- 16:44those quiet, authentic moments. The first trap we have to camera
- 16:48home again is the food trap. I have to repeat this.
- 16:52If you can see the astronomical clock from your restaurant
- 16:54table, the food is probably bad and definitely overpriced.
- 16:58It's the location tax. A massive 1.
- 17:01The fix is so simple, just walk 5 minutes in any direction away
- 17:05from that square. The quality goes way up and the
- 17:07price drops by 1/3. Any specific recommendation for
- 17:11good honest Czech food? Look for a place called Locale.
- 17:15They have a few locations. It's all about fresh
- 17:17ingredients, traditional recipes, and perfectly poured
- 17:20pilsner ercal from the tank. It's the real deal.
- 17:23And the taxi trap again. Hailing a cab on the street in
- 17:26Prague One is still a bad idea. Still a very high risk move.
- 17:29You're just opening yourself up to scams.
- 17:31Stick to the apps Uber, Bolt or the best local 1 which is called
- 17:36Lyftago. It's often used by professional
- 17:38licensed drivers. So timing, when is the absolute
- 17:41best time to go to get that Moody atmosphere without the
- 17:44peak crowds? Well, if the Christmas markets
- 17:46are the main reason you're going, then aim for the first
- 17:48half of December, December 1st to the 15th.
- 17:50Why not the week of Christmas at itself?
- 17:53It gets even more crowded, prices for hotels spike and a
- 17:56lot of the locals, smaller shops and restaurants start to close
- 17:59down for the holiday. The atmosphere becomes a bit
- 18:02less authentic. Well, what if you don't care
- 18:04about the markets? What if you just want the mood?
- 18:07Then the absolute best time is late October or March.
- 18:10The crowds are gone, hotel rates are much lower, and you get that
- 18:13beautiful atmospheric fog rolling in off the river in the
- 18:16mornings. That's when the city feels truly
- 18:18haunting and magical. What about a late night strategy
- 18:22if getting up for a 6:00 AM sunrise is just not going to
- 18:25happen? That's a great alternative.
- 18:27Go to the Charles Bridge at 1:00 AM or 2:00 AM.
- 18:30You won't have the golden light of dawn, but you'll have
- 18:31something else, almost complete solitude.
- 18:34The lamps are lit. The statues are these dark
- 18:36silhouettes. It feels like you have the whole
- 18:39medieval city to yourself. I love that.
- 18:41OK, now we need to talk about the big disappointments, the
- 18:43things on every must do list that often leave people feeling.
- 18:48At the top of that list is the Astronomical Clock show.
- 18:50The hourly show, Yeah, it's the classic anticlimax.
- 18:53It really is. You see thousands of people
- 18:56gather in the square, all staring up with their phones
- 18:58out. The anticipation builds.
- 19:00I know what happens. A skeleton rings, a little bell,
- 19:03a few figures pop out of a window, a chicken squawks and
- 19:06it's over and like 30 seconds and.
- 19:09Everyone just kind of looks at each other like is that it?
- 19:11The let down is real. Now I have to push back a little
- 19:13here. The clock itself is an
- 19:16incredible piece of 15th century engineering.
- 19:19For sure, as a historical artifact, it's a marvel.
- 19:22Yeah. It tracks the sun, the moon, the
- 19:24Zodiac. It's brilliant.
- 19:25So the advice should be go see the clock, appreciate it as a
- 19:29work of art in science, but maybe skip the part where you
- 19:32stand in a massive crowd for half an hour just to watch the
- 19:35little show. That's the perfect way to put
- 19:37it, manage the expectation. And the second big
- 19:39disappointment is that food fraud, the Trudelnick.
- 19:43We have to say it again, it's messy, it's overpriced, it's
- 19:46just sugar drenched dough. It is not an authentic Czech
- 19:49experience. So what's the fix?
- 19:51What's the authentic alternative?
- 19:52You go to a real Czech bakery, a Kukurana, and you buy AV Trnick.
- 19:57The view tick explain what that is.
- 19:58It's basically a magnificent large cream puff.
- 20:02It's made from shoe pastry and it's usually filled with these
- 20:05two layers of delicious cream, one vanilla and one caramel.
- 20:10It's a genuine Czech pastry and it is so much better.
- 20:14OK, so let's flip from the disappointments to the moments
- 20:17that make the whole trip worthwhile.
- 20:19The transcendent moments. For me, it has to be that
- 20:22Charles Bridge at dawn experience we keep talking
- 20:24about. It's a pain to get up that early
- 20:26in the cold, but when you're standing there and the fog is
- 20:29swirling around the statues and there are maybe five other
- 20:32people on the entire bridge, that's the magic.
- 20:35That's the Prague from the fairy tales.
- 20:37My moment was indoors. It was at the Strahoff Monastery
- 20:40library. Up by the castle, Beautiful
- 20:42spot. You go into the theological hall
- 20:44and the philosophical hall and you can't actually walk among
- 20:48the books. You just look in from the
- 20:49doorway. Which can be a little
- 20:50frustrating. It can, but the view is just
- 20:54breathtaking. The ceiling frescoes, the
- 20:57woodwork. But for me it was the smell.
- 21:00That smell of old paper, leather and wood Polish.
- 21:03It's the smell of centuries of knowledge.
- 21:06It just hits you. That's a great one.
- 21:09My third would be finding the soul of the city in a real pub,
- 21:13a place like Uzlateo Tigra, the Golden Tiger.
- 21:16Now you're talking. This is not a tourist bar.
- 21:18You have to explain the system. OK, so you walk in, you find a
- 21:21seat at a shared table and you sit down.
- 21:23You don't say anything. 1/2 liter of fresh Pilsner Urquell
- 21:27is just placed in front of you. They don't ask, they just bring
- 21:29it and they keep track with little pencil Marks and a piece
- 21:31of paper. When you finish, another one
- 21:33appears. There's no music, just the hum
- 21:36of conversation, and the only way to stop the beer from coming
- 21:39to get your bill is to put your coaster on top of your empty
- 21:42glass. That's the signal.
- 21:43That's the signal. It's this perfect, efficient,
- 21:46unspoken system. It's an incredible cultural
- 21:49experience. Those are the moments, the dawn,
- 21:51the history, the pub culture. That's what you go for.
- 21:55OK, let's move into our last big section before the verdict.
- 21:58Comfort, safety, and cultural nuances.
- 22:01Right. First, let's be clear about
- 22:02safety. Statistically, Prague is an
- 22:05incredibly safe city. Violent crime is very, very low.
- 22:09You can generally walk around late at night and feel perfectly
- 22:11secure. But there's a difference between
- 22:13the statistical safety and comfort safety, right?
- 22:16And the main issue here is pickpocketing.
- 22:18Exactly. It's a crime of opportunity that
- 22:21thrives in crowds. The main target zones are the
- 22:24crush of people around the astronomical plot in the
- 22:27Christmas markets and on tram 22.
- 22:29That's the tram that goes up to the castle, so it's always
- 22:32packed with tourists. Always.
- 22:34So the advice is simple. Wallet in your front pocket, bag
- 22:37zipped and worn on your front. In those crowded spots, just be
- 22:40aware of your surroundings. What about other cultural
- 22:43adjustments? The service culture can be a
- 22:45shock for some people, especially Americans.
- 22:47It really can. The waiters in Prague are not
- 22:50working for tips in the same way.
- 22:52Their focus is on efficiency, not on being your best friend.
- 22:55So they might seem a bit direct. We're not very smiley.
- 22:58Exactly, and it's not meant to be rude, it's just a different
- 23:02cultural approach to service. It's professional and
- 23:05functional. You should still tip about 10%
- 23:07for good service, but don't expect the effusive friendliness
- 23:10you might get in the states. And we have to mention that tram
- 23:13inspector scam. Yes, a person might approach you
- 23:15on the tram, flash a fake looking badge and claim you
- 23:19didn't validate your ticket properly.
- 23:21They'll demand a big fine in cash right there on the spot.
- 23:25So what's the fix? A real inspector will have an
- 23:28official badge and usually an electronic device to issue a
- 23:31proper receipt. They're unlikely to demand a
- 23:34large cash payment on the spot. If someone is aggressive and
- 23:37demanding cash, be very suspicious as to see proper ID
- 23:41or to handle it at an official office.
- 23:43OK, one more major comfort issue, accessibility.
- 23:46This is a huge one. Historic charm means stairs and
- 23:49cobblestones. Prague is not an easy city for
- 23:52anyone with mobility issues. Many of the beautiful old hotels
- 23:56don't have elevators. And the Metro can be a challenge
- 23:58too, right? A big challenge.
- 24:00A lot of the stations are really deep underground and rely on
- 24:03these long, steep, fast escalators.
- 24:05Not all of them have elevators, so if you need accessible
- 24:07transit you have to do very careful research on your route
- 24:11ahead of time. It's not a city you can just
- 24:12navigate easily if you have mobility challenges.
- 24:15So if Prague sounds a bit too intense, a bit too crowded, what
- 24:19are the alternatives? Where else can you go?
- 24:22My number one recommendation within the Czech Republic is a
- 24:24city called Olamuk. Olamuk, tell us about it.
- 24:28It's about two hours east of Prague, my train, and it
- 24:31honestly feels like Prague did 20 years ago.
- 24:34It has a gorgeous main square, a hue UNESCO column, baroque
- 24:38fountains, and because it's a big university town, it has a
- 24:41great lively atmosphere. And the price is?
- 24:44About 30% lower across the board.
- 24:45It's fantastic value and you get that historic charm without the
- 24:49crushing crowds. OK, what about the more famous
- 24:51alternative, Esky Krumlov? Krumlov.
- 24:55It's stunningly beautiful, like a fairy tale town come to life.
- 24:58The castle, the river winding through it, it's perfect.
- 25:01But there's a catch. There's a big catch during the
- 25:05day. It is even more of a
- 25:06concentrated tourist trap than Prague.
- 25:09The tiny streets are just choked with day trip tour groups.
- 25:12And it's only worth it if. If you stay overnight,
- 25:14absolutely. After 5:00 PM when the tour
- 25:17buses leave, the town becomes quiet and magical.
- 25:21But a day trip can be really frustrating.
- 25:23What about hopping over the border?
- 25:25A great option is Dresden, Germany.
- 25:27It's only a 2 hour train right away.
- 25:29Their Christmas markets are some of the oldest and most famous in
- 25:32Germany, so you get a totally different, very traditional
- 25:35market experience. And you could combine these
- 25:37cities, right? Yes, the classic Imperial
- 25:40Triangle itinerary is fantastic. You do 3 days in Prague for the
- 25:44gothic moodiness, then take the train to Vienna for three days
- 25:47of imperial grandeur, and then finish with three days in
- 25:49Budapest for the thermal baths and ruin bars.
- 25:52It's an amazing trip. Last one, what about Carlovi
- 25:56Veri? Carlsbad.
- 25:57It's a beautiful spa town with all these colorful old
- 26:00buildings. It's very pretty, especially in
- 26:02the snow, but just a heads up, that's it.
- 26:04The famous mineral water that you drink from the springs.
- 26:07It tastes pretty strongly of sulfur.
- 26:09Like rotten eggs, A. Little bit, yeah, but the
- 26:12architecture is lovely. OK, it is time for the final
- 26:15verdict matrix. After everything we've
- 26:16discussed, is Prague actually worth the hassle?
- 26:20And for who? First up, the backpacker.
- 26:24That's an easy one. Verdict Yes, the beer is still
- 26:27cheap, the hostels are world class, it's super walkable, it's
- 26:31still fantastic value as long as you eat at the Jedelna's and
- 26:34stay out of the tourist trap restaurants.
- 26:36Agreed. Next, the mid range couple on a
- 26:39romantic getaway. This is a verdict.
- 26:41Yes, with conditions. The romance is there, but you
- 26:45have to earn it. You have to get up for the 6:00
- 26:47AM sunrise, and you have to stay out late for the quiet moments.
- 26:51Midday is not romantic, It's stressful.
- 26:53And you have to book restaurants in advance and stay in a quieter
- 26:56neighborhood like Malistrana. Exactly.
- 26:58OK, what about the family trip? I'm going with verdict mixed
- 27:03kids will like the castle and the toy museum, but the crowds
- 27:05are so stressful with little ones and strollers on those
- 27:08cobblestones are a genuine nightmare.
- 27:11It's not a relaxing trip for parents.
- 27:13I agree completely. And finally, the luxury
- 27:16traveler. That's another easy one.
- 27:17Verdict Absolute yes. The values just off the charts.
- 27:22Private tours, staying in a converted monastery, Michelin
- 27:26star dining for half the price in New York.
- 27:28It's a phenomenal luxury destination.
- 27:30So let's sum it up with an optimized 4 day itinerary.
- 27:34What's the sweet spot? Four days is perfect.
- 27:37Day one. Dive into the Old Town and the
- 27:39Jewish Quarter, get your bearings, see the chaos, then
- 27:43escape to an authentic pub in the evening.
- 27:45Day 2. The castle district in La
- 27:47Estrana You must start this day early.
- 27:49Be up at the castle before 8:30 AM to see St.
- 27:52Vitus Cathedral before the crowds descend, then wander down
- 27:56through the quieter streets of Malastrana.
- 27:58Day three is for getting away from the crowd.
- 27:59Exactly. Go to Via Rod, the city's other
- 28:02much quieter castle for great views.
- 28:04Then spend the afternoon in a real neighborhood like Vienna,
- 28:07ready eating where the locals eat.
- 28:09And day 4. You have a choice, either a day
- 28:11trip to Kootenahora to see the famous Bone church, which is
- 28:14fascinatingly creepy, or just spend the day intentionally
- 28:17getting lost wandering with without a plan.
- 28:19I love that. So final scores, logistically,
- 28:23what do you give it? I'd give the logistics AB plus
- 28:26A. The public transport is an A +
- 28:28A, but the street level crowd management brings it down.
- 28:32Walking can be incredibly inefficient.
- 28:34And the emotional score, the feeling of the city.
- 28:37That's an A for all its frustrations, when the light is
- 28:41right and the mood hits, there are a few places on Earth that
- 28:44feel so hauntingly beautiful it really gets under your skin.
- 28:48It really does. So before we go, we have one
- 28:51last piece of nonnegotiable advice, a final practical take
- 28:54away that could save you a lot of hassle.
- 28:56Yes, this is crucial. Don't forget to validate your
- 28:59tram ticket. It sounds so simple, but it's so
- 29:02important. You can buy the ticket, but if
- 29:04you don't stick it in that little yellow box to get it time
- 29:06stamped, it's not valid. And that's when you're
- 29:08vulnerable to either a real fine or one of those scams.
- 29:12That little stamp is everything. So safe travels, go find the
- 29:15magic in those quiet corners. And trust your alarm clock.
- 29:18The early morning is your best friend in Prague.
- 29:20And please watch your wallet and for goodness sake, skip the
- 29:23chimney cake. We'll see you next time.
