- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, Welcome to Inside the Tape with NFL Film
- 0:12Speaker 1: Senior producer Greg co Cell for Inside the Birds, I'm
- 0:15Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan and Greg.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Here we are. You guys had a crazy game.
- 0:19Speaker 1: It was one of the strangest games I think I've
- 0:21Speaker 1: seen it a long time Greg, But more more about
- 0:24Speaker 1: that in a minute. But look, it was it was
- 0:26Speaker 1: a game they clearly felt they should have won. But
- 0:29Speaker 1: the tape will always tell you something different from what
- 0:31Speaker 1: you would think you saw on TV. And Greg, this week,
- 0:34Speaker 1: because we're in a we're in a short we're in
- 0:36Speaker 1: a shirt week, and the Eagles play Friday, and because
- 0:40Speaker 1: of the holiday, we're not we're not able to get
- 0:42Speaker 1: in the tape in terms of watching it along with you.
- 0:45Speaker 1: But the great thing about this show is in particular
- 0:47Speaker 1: we did this last year. It actually gives us more
- 0:50Speaker 1: time to talk about specifics scheme.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Uh, We'll should probably get.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Into the Bears and one of these two shows a
- 0:58Speaker 1: little bit because the Eagles play them on a weird
- 1:00Speaker 1: day on Friday. At Friday Friday at three pm Eastern.
- 1:05Speaker 2: You gotta love it.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Hey, at least it's not at seven o'clock, so you
- 1:08Speaker 1: folks could have some dinner early. But but the bottom
- 1:11Speaker 1: line is, Greg, they did lose this game. And the
- 1:14Speaker 1: reason why I brought up, you know, tay versus TV
- 1:16Speaker 1: copy or what you could be fooled. Sometimes I'll call
- 1:20Speaker 1: coach and like a running back could have gone twenty
- 1:25Speaker 1: for one twenty five and go, hey, man, that dude
- 1:27Speaker 1: had a great game, and goes, are you kidding me?
- 1:29Speaker 1: He missed five runs in the BGAP. What are you
- 1:31Speaker 1: talking about. I'm like, sorry, dude, right, it's I'm only
- 1:34Speaker 1: you know. He goes, you clearly didn't watch the tape.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I go, no, I didn't. He goes, well, let me
- 1:37Speaker 1: explain to you what we were pissed off about. Yes,
- 1:39Speaker 1: he did get this done, but he missed this, this, this, this, this,
- 1:42Speaker 1: this this run. I'm like, okay, I got it. So Greg,
- 1:46Speaker 1: explain for the folks because there are a lot of
- 1:48Speaker 1: people who are watching, Yeah, don't understand the difference between
- 1:52Speaker 1: watching at home on Sunday on their couch on TV
- 1:54Speaker 1: and what kind of shot you get on TV camera
- 1:58Speaker 1: shot and then on the All twenty two like you
- 2:00Speaker 1: and the coaches watching the executives watch.
- 2:03Speaker 2: What does that tell you? Yeah?
- 2:05Speaker 3: And there's even things beyond that, which i'll just briefly
- 2:08Speaker 3: touch upon. But I learned a long time ago. I
- 2:11Speaker 3: started watching tape in maybe nineteen ninety one, nineteen ninety two,
- 2:15Speaker 3: and I had to learn the game through watching tape,
- 2:18Speaker 3: because the reality is, when you watch a game on TV,
- 2:21Speaker 3: you have truly very little idea of what's truly going
- 2:25Speaker 3: on from an X and O tactical perspective. That's just
- 2:28Speaker 3: the reality. It doesn't make anybody who watches tape smarter
- 2:32Speaker 3: than a fan. It's just a fan does not have
- 2:34Speaker 3: access to what is really happening on the field when
- 2:37Speaker 3: you watch a game on TV, because you really need
- 2:40Speaker 3: to see all twenty two players to have an understanding
- 2:43Speaker 3: of what's going on. And I'm fortunate with the coaching tape.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Not only do I see the all twenty two, but
- 2:49Speaker 3: I see two end zone angles, one from behind the offense,
- 2:52Speaker 3: one from behind the defense. So every play in the
- 2:55Speaker 3: game I see from three different angles. And you know,
- 2:59Speaker 3: I remember Merril Hodge telling me at a very early
- 3:02Speaker 3: point in my tape watching, and Meryll, for those who don't,
- 3:05Speaker 3: may not remember him if you're a younger watcher. Meryll
- 3:08Speaker 3: played in the league for a long time with the
- 3:10Speaker 3: Pittsburgh Steelers. He was on the Matchup show with Ron
- 3:12Speaker 3: Jaworski for I don't know fifteen eighteen years a long time,
- 3:18Speaker 3: and one of the first things he said, he said,
- 3:21Speaker 3: you know, TV lies, highlights really lie. So you have
- 3:26Speaker 3: to be careful when you watch a game on TV
- 3:29Speaker 3: making any you know, definitive kind of judgment as to
- 3:33Speaker 3: what's really happening from an X and O standpoint. And
- 3:36Speaker 3: the other point I would make to playoff what you
- 3:38Speaker 3: said about speaking to a coach is even someone like myself,
- 3:42Speaker 3: you don't know what they're asking players to do within
- 3:46Speaker 3: a specific scheme. So, for instance, if you're watching a
- 3:49Speaker 3: pass play and even if you feel like, oh, he
- 3:53Speaker 3: should have thrown it there, you don't know what the
- 3:55Speaker 3: read is specifically, you don't know how they've coached him
- 3:58Speaker 3: on that particular play. You don't know what that he's
- 4:01Speaker 3: being told. You don't know any of those things. So
- 4:04Speaker 3: you can watch even if you do have access to tape,
- 4:07Speaker 3: which more people do have access to these days, if
- 4:11Speaker 3: you really don't know any of that, there's no way
- 4:14Speaker 3: you can make any definitive judgment. I remember someone from
- 4:17Speaker 3: the NFL network years ago forget his name, but I
- 4:22Speaker 3: don't I don't know if he's with the network anymore.
- 4:24Speaker 3: He reached out to me maybe ten years ago, and
- 4:27Speaker 3: he said, hey, this is when tape first speak true coaching.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Tape became available to kind of everybody, you know. And
- 4:33Speaker 3: he said, hey, you know, I really want to, you know,
- 4:36Speaker 3: learn how to watch tape. Can you help me out?
- 4:38Speaker 3: And I, you know, he wrote a very long email,
- 4:41Speaker 3: great email, and I wanted to respond in kind. I
- 4:43Speaker 3: didn't want to, you know, just get back to him
- 4:44Speaker 3: and say nanna, And I wanted to really respond in kind.
- 4:47Speaker 3: So I reached out to him and I said, look,
- 4:49Speaker 3: I said, I don't know who you have access to.
- 4:51Speaker 3: But the way I learned the game was people had
- 4:53Speaker 3: to teach me how to watch tape. I didn't just
- 4:55Speaker 3: sit and watch tape and figured I knew what I
- 4:57Speaker 3: was looking at because quite frankly, when I started, I
- 5:00Speaker 3: had no idea of how to watch it all. And
- 5:02Speaker 3: it took me a long long time. And you're still
- 5:05Speaker 3: I'm still learning every day. But the point I'm trying
- 5:07Speaker 3: to make is I said to him, number one, you
- 5:09Speaker 3: need someone who can help teach you as you're watching.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I said, if you think you can have dinner with
- 5:15Speaker 3: your family, put your child to bed, and then go
- 5:18Speaker 3: in your basement and watch tape for twenty minutes or
- 5:20Speaker 3: a half hour and think you know what you're looking at.
- 5:23Speaker 3: You're going to have no idea. And you know, he
- 5:25Speaker 3: really appreciated that I said that. But you know, if
- 5:28Speaker 3: you have to have a really kind of advanced view
- 5:32Speaker 3: of what you're looking at. And like I said, it
- 5:34Speaker 3: took me a long time. I didn't feel comfortable at him.
- 5:37Speaker 3: I started watching tape in maybe nineteen ninety two. I
- 5:40Speaker 3: think it was when we got coaching tape. I got
- 5:43Speaker 3: to tell you, I didn't feel comfortable in the least
- 5:46Speaker 3: until maybe nineteen ninety eight, nineteen ninety nine, and.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I'm still learning.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Look, you would come to NFL films and say tending myself,
- 5:53Speaker 3: Ron Jaworski. I mean, you know, those were the sort
- 5:56Speaker 3: of the formative years for me, and I was learning
- 6:00Speaker 3: when I was fortunate to be around. You know, I'm
- 6:02Speaker 3: sure people who've listened to me know that I spent
- 6:04Speaker 3: time with Bill Walsh. I mean, when you sit with
- 6:07Speaker 3: someone like Bill Walsh, you feel like you know nothing
- 6:09Speaker 3: about anything. I mean, that's kind of you know, that's
- 6:13Speaker 3: kind of the way it is, you know, I mean,
- 6:16Speaker 3: it's just stories. Yeah, it takes a lot of time.
- 6:21Speaker 3: And the bottom line point is watching a game on
- 6:23Speaker 3: TV tells you very very little about what's really going.
- 6:27Speaker 1: On, right, because I remember you telling me a couple
- 6:30Speaker 1: of times, like you know, you're at home on Sunday
- 6:31Speaker 1: watching Red Zone. You go, Okay, this could be this
- 6:34Speaker 1: looks really good and you go in and it's totally
- 6:36Speaker 1: not what you thought.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, Which is why a lot of people say
- 6:40Speaker 3: to me, Adam, A lot of people say, don't you
- 6:42Speaker 3: take notes when you watch on today? I said, no, Sunday,
- 6:44Speaker 3: I just put on Red Zone. I let it wash
- 6:47Speaker 3: over me. I know I'm going to see the tape,
- 6:49Speaker 3: you know, I don't study it when I'm watching on
- 6:52Speaker 3: the Red Zone. I enjoy it. You know, I'm a fan.
- 6:55Speaker 3: I'm a football fan. I enjoy it on Sundays.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Sure, sure, all right, Well, hey, that's that's a great
- 7:00Speaker 1: way to get inside the tape here on the Eagles
- 7:05Speaker 1: offense and Greg you've been talking about and so I
- 7:08Speaker 1: brought it up with with Jeffleman inside the Birds right
- 7:10Speaker 1: on the right shows they gotta help Jellen hurts get
- 7:13Speaker 1: off the better start. It's Kellenmorth struggled the same way
- 7:17Speaker 1: for several weeks last year, and yes, you could be aggressive,
- 7:21Speaker 1: but help your quarterback.
- 7:22Speaker 2: And I like Greg what they did early. What do
- 7:24Speaker 2: you think of their approach early on?
- 7:25Speaker 3: Yeah, well, their first two plays came out of twelve personnel.
- 7:28Speaker 3: They probably knew. See, this is the other thing. The
- 7:30Speaker 3: things we don't know is you know, look, I watch
- 7:33Speaker 3: tape every week, but I'm not studying like a team does.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I'm not studying the last four or five games of
- 7:39Speaker 3: the Cowboys in this anywhere near the same detail that
- 7:43Speaker 3: the that the Eagles coaches do, or any coach does
- 7:48Speaker 3: for the team that they're playing. I mean, I remember
- 7:51Speaker 3: just a quick aside when Dick Vermeil used to call
- 7:53Speaker 3: Ron Juworski, you know, we'd be sitting here at films,
- 7:56Speaker 3: and he would ask him about other things going on
- 7:58Speaker 3: in the league because all the coaches do is focus
- 8:01Speaker 3: on the team they're playing. I'm trying to watch every
- 8:03Speaker 3: game every week and I still can't even do that.
- 8:06Speaker 3: So my guess is the Eagles knew, based on their
- 8:09Speaker 3: film study that if they lined up in twelve personnel
- 8:12Speaker 3: they'd get corners off. So the first two players were
- 8:15Speaker 3: quick timing hitches to Brown outside the numbers versus off
- 8:18Speaker 3: coverage plays. To your point exactly, Adam get hurts into
- 8:22Speaker 3: an early rhythm because those are pitch and catch throws
- 8:25Speaker 3: and you gain yards and your quarterback now feels pretty
- 8:29Speaker 3: pretty good. Although on the third play, I really thought
- 8:32Speaker 3: that he left the pocket prematurely. They went no huddle
- 8:35Speaker 3: after the second play, and I thought Jalen left the
- 8:38Speaker 3: pocket prematurely and missed an opportunity for an easy completion
- 8:42Speaker 3: to calculatear on the shallow crosser.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Gotcha.
- 8:45Speaker 1: So this game, and when I got the game book
- 8:47Speaker 1: that confirmed it. They were heavy eleven personnel, which I
- 8:50Speaker 1: kind of thought they would do. Greg the overall in
- 8:52Speaker 1: terms of the personal approach, group is and so forth,
- 8:55Speaker 1: what do you think of the approach over the course
- 8:56Speaker 1: of the game.
- 8:58Speaker 3: I mean, they had forty three snaps eleven only eleven
- 9:01Speaker 3: snaps in twelve, so it was obviously heavy, and I
- 9:04Speaker 3: think they did that again, I'm just guessing based on
- 9:09Speaker 3: watching the Cowboys and what I think my understanding might be.
- 9:13Speaker 3: You know, the Cowboys have struggled in the secondary. You know, Revel.
- 9:18Speaker 3: They're rookie from East Carolina. I played his first game
- 9:21Speaker 3: last week, and I told you guys he would play
- 9:23Speaker 3: more this week for sure based on what I saw
- 9:26Speaker 3: last week, which he did. But they're still the weakness
- 9:30Speaker 3: of their defense is at the corner position, because even
- 9:33Speaker 3: though they paid Bland a ton of money, he's not
- 9:35Speaker 3: a really he's an average NFL corner. He's probably be
- 9:38Speaker 3: best suited in the slot, which is kind of where
- 9:41Speaker 3: they put him when Revel's in the game. So I
- 9:44Speaker 3: thought that, you know, if you go eleven personnel, you're
- 9:47Speaker 3: putting the Cowboys in their nickel defense. And I'm sure
- 9:51Speaker 3: they felt the same way that. You know what, they're
- 9:54Speaker 3: not real good on the back end, and we can
- 9:57Speaker 3: you know, we can do some things with eleven personnel.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Hey, it's Jeff Mosher. And if you have a family

- 12:40Speaker 1: Off first three series, Greg, I mean they move the
- 12:43Speaker 1: ball right, yeah, down the field. I know the Cowboys
- 12:45Speaker 1: had all sorts of comedy of ours and so forth,
- 12:47Speaker 1: but the Eagles were really sharp.
- 12:49Speaker 2: What did you like about those series where they scored?
- 12:53Speaker 2: You know, it's funny.
- 12:54Speaker 3: I mean, obviously we just talked about the beginning where
- 12:56Speaker 3: they got they got them into a rhythm because they're
- 12:59Speaker 3: selling on running the ball.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Very well at all awful to be honest with him.
- 13:03Speaker 3: You know, obviously that first drive in in with a
- 13:06Speaker 3: Brown sixteen yard touchdown, which was you know, I thought
- 13:09Speaker 3: that was well designed to create a boundary opportunity, which
- 13:15Speaker 3: we see. I see a lot with teams in the
- 13:16Speaker 3: high red zone they try to work to the two
- 13:19Speaker 3: receiver side because you have the back offset to that side,
- 13:22Speaker 3: and then you have your extra receiver who is Brown
- 13:25Speaker 3: on that play, and then your trips to the other side.
- 13:28Speaker 3: So the defense, because of trips to the wide side
- 13:31Speaker 3: of the field, they kind of pushed their coverage to
- 13:34Speaker 3: the to the trip side. There's three receivers there, so
- 13:37Speaker 3: you end up with a two man route concept, which
- 13:40Speaker 3: presents basically a one defender read for the most part,
- 13:44Speaker 3: and a lot of teams do this, and the one
- 13:47Speaker 3: defender that Jalen had to read was was Wilson. And
- 13:53Speaker 3: as soon as Wilson dropped down to Matt Shipley, who
- 13:56Speaker 3: released into the boundary, that's where he started into the
- 13:58Speaker 3: boundary anyway, then he knew that he had Brown one
- 14:01Speaker 3: on one versus Bland, and you'll take that match up
- 14:04Speaker 3: all day long. Bland can't cover Brown. So it wasn't
- 14:08Speaker 3: a great throw by the way, and Brown actually made
- 14:10Speaker 3: a very tough batch. But the concept was really good.
- 14:13Speaker 3: I liked it a lot, and it was good to
- 14:15Speaker 3: see it. But you know, the one thing I noticed
- 14:18Speaker 3: on that play, which then became part of the game,
- 14:21Speaker 3: was the detackle Quinton Williams drove Dickerson into the pocket.
- 14:25Speaker 3: And as the game progressed, I just kept noticing that
- 14:29Speaker 3: the old line was not playing particularly well, either run
- 14:32Speaker 3: blocking or in pass protection. And there's one thing that
- 14:35Speaker 3: really stood out at him and I think this is
- 14:39Speaker 3: a really important point. And I don't know why. I
- 14:42Speaker 3: wish I had the batphone and can call Jeff Stallin
- 14:45Speaker 3: right now, but they helped Jordan Mayolotta in this game
- 14:49Speaker 3: an awful lot. He was helped in pass protection thirteen
- 14:53Speaker 3: times where they chipped with you know, a tight end,
- 14:57Speaker 3: a wide receiver, a running back. They attached a tight
- 15:00Speaker 3: end to his side twelve times. It was as if
- 15:03Speaker 3: they felt he could not block one on one and
- 15:06Speaker 3: the Cowboys do not have a big time edge pass rusher.
- 15:09Speaker 3: So that just is something that we should keep an
- 15:12Speaker 3: eye on going forward to the rest of the season.
- 15:14Speaker 3: They clearly felt they had to help Jordan may Alta
- 15:17Speaker 3: in this game.
- 15:18Speaker 1: You know, it's funny we've talked about their offensive line,
- 15:21Speaker 1: the struggles. We know Jordanilata is not playing as well
- 15:23Speaker 1: as he has in years past. But you've always told
- 15:25Speaker 1: us Greg, coaches tell you what they think by what
- 15:28Speaker 1: they do, and you saw that that What's interesting is
- 15:32Speaker 1: I saw it a couple of times.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I had no idea, and this is how the tape
- 15:35Speaker 2: tells you. Many times they did it.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Wow with Parsons, with him being traded, you you wouldn't
- 15:41Speaker 1: think they'd have to worry about that.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Well now I.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Think right going forward and we'll see what Chicago could
- 15:46Speaker 1: do with their defensive front with Montes Wet wherever they've
- 15:50Speaker 1: got rushing. But I think it's something I'm gonna have
- 15:53Speaker 1: to look at going forward. You've noticed this before, have you?
- 15:56Speaker 2: No?
- 15:57Speaker 3: I noticed it immediately in this game.
- 15:59Speaker 2: But it's funny. Just what you said is what I type.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I said.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Coaching staff was telling us they were not comfortable with
- 16:04Speaker 3: my a lot in one on one pass protection.
- 16:06Speaker 2: We don't have to guess that, right. You know they
- 16:08Speaker 2: gave it, Yeah, they just didn't.
- 16:10Speaker 3: They were telling us that. I thought that on the
- 16:14Speaker 3: second t D drive because you're talking about early in
- 16:16Speaker 3: the game. Yes, you know, I mean, Adam, I don't
- 16:19Speaker 3: know how you felt. I actually had my daughter, son
- 16:22Speaker 3: in law, grandson over, so I was watching the game,
- 16:25Speaker 3: but I wasn't hearing a lot of it. But I
- 16:29Speaker 3: thought that when it was twenty one nothing, it felt
- 16:32Speaker 3: like a blowout. I was thinking to myself, this game's over.
- 16:34Speaker 1: But just a lot of people felt, well, Greg, I
- 16:37Speaker 1: got to be honest with you. Hurts us off to
- 16:38Speaker 1: a good start. Here's the thing. I know, sometimes we
- 16:40Speaker 1: want the ball here when he might put it here.
- 16:43Speaker 1: But he was accurate. Okay, you'll tell you a couple
- 16:46Speaker 1: of really good throws. We'll get to those here's the
- 16:48Speaker 1: thing I was going to tell you. I thought he
- 16:49Speaker 1: had one of the best throws of the season. Second
- 16:52Speaker 1: t TD drive. It was Brown twenty two yards on
- 16:56Speaker 1: third and five at him. You may remember the play.
- 16:58Speaker 1: It was a tight window in break versus his own coverage.
- 17:01Speaker 1: He showed out standing anticipation and timing, precise ball placement.
- 17:05Speaker 1: The Cowboys were in their five to one nickel and
- 17:08Speaker 1: that was the kind of throw that you love to see,
- 17:11Speaker 1: you know, that would be the kind of throw that
- 17:13Speaker 1: if any quarterback made it, I'd say, that's a big
- 17:15Speaker 1: time throw, you know, because it was a tight window
- 17:18Speaker 1: throw and that's what you want to see because you know,
- 17:21Speaker 1: you know what I do, and you've seen this, you
- 17:23Speaker 1: know when you sat with me and show is I
- 17:25Speaker 1: freeze it just as the quarterback separates his hands because
- 17:29Speaker 1: I know that's when he's starting his delivery and then
- 17:31Speaker 1: you see where the defense is, you see where the
- 17:33Speaker 1: receiver is. And Brown had not even gotten to the
- 17:37Speaker 1: window yet. And that was a big time NFL throw
- 17:41Speaker 1: rag As a matter of fact, So on Verizon files,
- 17:44Speaker 1: you I have slow motion. So I was like, wait,
- 17:46Speaker 1: did he throw that into participation? He rarely does that
- 17:49Speaker 1: I mean, that's just the truth, right, he did. He
- 17:52Speaker 1: did a phenomenal job in the Minnesota game. That anticipation
- 17:55Speaker 1: passed the brown down the scene. So I'm like, wow,
- 17:58Speaker 1: that's unbelievable that he got it like and it's when
- 18:01Speaker 1: you ask like, why can't he do this more? No
- 18:03Speaker 1: one could answer that, And.
- 18:05Speaker 3: I wish I had an answer for that, because when
- 18:07Speaker 3: I see a throw like that, I say, you know,
- 18:08Speaker 3: because you know how it is. Then people on social
- 18:11Speaker 3: media immediately say, oh, well.
- 18:12Speaker 2: See, you know, people say you can't throw it. Make
- 18:15Speaker 2: that throw here? He made it.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Well, of course he's made them in his career. He's
- 18:19Speaker 3: an NFL quarterback. We're not talking about ninth graders. But
- 18:22Speaker 3: he just doesn't do it often enough, and the coaching
- 18:26Speaker 3: staff is telling you, for the most part, they don't
- 18:29Speaker 3: think he can do that a lot, not just this
- 18:31Speaker 3: coaching staff, previous ones as well, because they don't call
- 18:35Speaker 3: those kinds of plays very often at all.
- 18:37Speaker 2: But that was a big time throw.
- 18:40Speaker 1: It was just good to see and you would hope, okay,
- 18:42Speaker 1: so he's done it that he could sort of build
- 18:45Speaker 1: off of that, but.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Hey, Philly fans game day is stressful enough. Parking traffic,

- 20:57Speaker 1: Well, ye, so all right, let's get the run blocking.
- 20:59Speaker 1: This is Greg, when I was running some numbers. I mean,
- 21:04Speaker 1: this is just goes to show you how bad it's
- 21:06Speaker 1: been for Saquon Barkley. He's on pace for seventeen games
- 21:10Speaker 1: of one thousand and fifty seven yards. He had two
- 21:12Speaker 1: thousand and five and sixteen games you're talking about. He's
- 21:15Speaker 1: on pace for nearly one thousand yards last the season
- 21:18Speaker 1: once he finishes. What what if you okay, so overview time,
- 21:23Speaker 1: look at this game, Greg, you ten rushers twenty two yards.
- 21:27Speaker 1: I know people wanted to run the second half. I
- 21:28Speaker 1: thought it was ridiculous. Throw the football because they can't run?
- 21:31Speaker 2: It?
- 21:32Speaker 1: Is it miss blocks? Because I know that the O line.
- 21:35Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about timing. I've asked you if
- 21:37Speaker 1: you know if they've looked healthy. I know you didn't
- 21:40Speaker 1: feel comfortable saying it, but there's something wrong here, Greg.
- 21:42Speaker 1: How could they be this poor and run block again?
- 21:46Speaker 2: You know?
- 21:47Speaker 3: Look, the one thing that I know you say everybody's
- 21:50Speaker 3: We've heard from everybody who's who's ever played the game,
- 21:53Speaker 3: is if you're out there, it doesn't matter whether you
- 21:55Speaker 3: have an injury or not. You're out there. That's the
- 21:58Speaker 3: bottom line. Sure, you know, and someone like Landon Dickerson,
- 22:02Speaker 3: who's a true warrior is not going to go into
- 22:04Speaker 3: the locker room after a game and say, sorry, guys,
- 22:06Speaker 3: my leg hurt so I couldn't block well today. You know,
- 22:08Speaker 3: you can't say that in an NFL locker room. You know,
- 22:12Speaker 3: if you're out there, you're playing. So I can't speak
- 22:15Speaker 3: to whether someone is hurt or not hurt, but I
- 22:17Speaker 3: can tell you right now that they are not winning.
- 22:19Speaker 3: At the point of attack. Barkley has one of the
- 22:22Speaker 3: lowest yards before first contact of any back in the league.
- 22:26Speaker 3: In the league, and last year he led the league,
- 22:29Speaker 3: he wasn't I think he was over four last year before.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Any first contact. Now he's about two.
- 22:35Speaker 3: So he's not getting past the first level. Now are
- 22:38Speaker 3: there times where Barkley is missing a hole because I
- 22:41Speaker 3: think what starts to happen with the back, and I
- 22:43Speaker 3: think it's human nature, is you start looking for space.
- 22:47Speaker 3: And that's just normal because all season long, for the
- 22:51Speaker 3: most part, the design of the play the point of
- 22:54Speaker 3: attack has not been clean. So what happens with backs
- 22:57Speaker 3: is they start to look for space, and ninety nine
- 23:00Speaker 3: percent of the time that just gets you in more
- 23:02Speaker 3: trouble every once in a while, how you find it
- 23:04Speaker 3: and it's great, but you can't play It's like quarterbacks
- 23:07Speaker 3: who just run around every once in a while. It's
- 23:09Speaker 3: beautiful and something great happens, but that's not the way
- 23:12Speaker 3: you can go about playing the position.
- 23:14Speaker 2: You can't.
- 23:15Speaker 3: You know, you can't play the position of running back.
- 23:17Speaker 3: And you even talked about that when we first started
- 23:19Speaker 3: the conversation. If you talk to a coach and he'd say,
- 23:21Speaker 3: what are you kidding me? There were five plays where
- 23:23Speaker 3: he didn't do you know, I mean if hits right gap, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 23:27Speaker 3: So I think Barkley is groping and searching at times now,
- 23:32Speaker 3: which makes it worse, by the way, not better, because
- 23:35Speaker 3: the old line is just not moving people. They're getting
- 23:39Speaker 3: beat they're not moving people.
- 23:40Speaker 1: It's so hard to believe, Greg because they were arguably
- 23:43Speaker 1: the NFL's past offensive line last season.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Like the last two three years.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, obviously they've had lines. How he's built
- 23:49Speaker 1: such great lines over the years. And just because that,
- 23:53Speaker 1: you just gave us the answer, they're not winning. That's
- 23:55Speaker 1: that's not winning.
- 23:56Speaker 2: That's enough. Yeah, I mean that that kind of tells me.
- 23:57Speaker 3: So we don't forget even in twenty twenty two when
- 23:59Speaker 3: they didn't have Barkley and they went to the Super Bowl,
- 24:02Speaker 3: Sanders Miles Sanders had, you know, twelve hundred and seventy
- 24:05Speaker 3: whatever he had. I mean, they had a good running
- 24:07Speaker 3: game that year. That wasn't just Jalen Hurts, you know,
- 24:10Speaker 3: that was a really good run game.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Yeah. And Greg.
- 24:13Speaker 1: One of the things that was troubling is Osa the
- 24:15Speaker 1: Diggie Zua. He was in the backfield so many times.
- 24:18Speaker 1: I know he's explosive times.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Yeah, that too many times.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yeah, he's explosive. Another guy that people have asked us
- 24:26Speaker 1: about in Wilmo as well. I know you're not charting it,
- 24:29Speaker 1: but people have asked us about Tyler Steen. Everything I've
- 24:31Speaker 1: been told is he's been average. You've seen him game
- 24:35Speaker 1: after game. I know he's relatively new to this position,
- 24:37Speaker 1: but I just don't know if it's been good enough
- 24:38Speaker 1: so far.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know if he's I don't think what
- 24:43Speaker 3: he is, even if he's going to be a good player,
- 24:45Speaker 3: I don't think he's a strong player, you know what
- 24:48Speaker 3: I mean. You know, Dicker said, I don't think he's
- 24:52Speaker 3: played well this year, you know, relative to what he's
- 24:54Speaker 3: done in previous years. But I don't think steen Is
- 25:00Speaker 3: is a strong player.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Yeah, remember he was. He was a left tackle on
- 25:04Speaker 2: college at Alabama.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not easy, as you've told us, and we
- 25:08Speaker 1: know this. People just think you snap your fingers and
- 25:10Speaker 1: go from tackle to guard.
- 25:11Speaker 2: It's not that easy toestual. No, no, it's not so easy. Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:15Speaker 2: The second half Greg was interesting.
- 25:16Speaker 1: So you know, they're moving the ball and some drives
- 25:20Speaker 1: and one series they had back to back penalties. They
- 25:23Speaker 1: had four penalties that crushed drives. It was frustrating because
- 25:26Speaker 1: I'm like, Okay, they're moving it. Then penalty penalty. Godd
- 25:30Speaker 1: Or gets involved, penalty. Smith has a nineteen yard catch penalty.
- 25:35Speaker 1: You know, people, it's just because we we've been very
- 25:38Speaker 1: critical of what we've seen from the off of the
- 25:40Speaker 1: offense for weeks and we finally start seeing some good stuff.
- 25:43Speaker 2: But then the self inflicted once.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I know it's not an analysis analysis piece here, but
- 25:48Speaker 1: to me, that that crushed the rhythm.
- 25:50Speaker 3: And then it's funny you say that that year, that
- 25:52Speaker 3: nineteen yard catch to Smith that you just referenced, that
- 25:56Speaker 3: was actually a beautiful route design that was that was
- 25:59Speaker 3: actually the flood concept and that was really effective. Smith
- 26:05Speaker 3: was open. It was really well schemed, well designed. And
- 26:09Speaker 3: then Fred Johnson got called for hands to the face.
- 26:12Speaker 3: But that was a play where when I saw it,
- 26:14Speaker 3: I was like, wow, that that I really liked it.
- 26:17Speaker 2: But unfortunately they had the penalty.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and that was you know, that was the ster
- 26:21Speaker 1: Fred Johnson to three penalties. They had fourteen overall including
- 26:24Speaker 1: special teams they had won, by the way, were penalties
- 26:27Speaker 1: off sets, so they actually had fifteen. It's it's tough, man.
- 26:31Speaker 1: It's tough, Greg when you're trying to get on a
- 26:33Speaker 1: roll here and you can't. But Greg, as we turned
- 26:36Speaker 1: the page, we have the Chicago Bears coming into Pilly
- 26:39Speaker 1: on Friday, and I thought, when they schedule this game
- 26:40Speaker 1: for Amazon, ah, good to see Caleb.
- 26:42Speaker 2: We'll see Caleb Williams this year.
- 26:44Speaker 1: That's fine. We'll see how Ben Johnson does with him.
- 26:46Speaker 1: I didn't think they'd have the same record Gregor's Eagles
- 26:48Speaker 1: due heading into week two time, I am shocked.
- 26:53Speaker 3: God talk more about the Bears, you know, in a
- 26:55Speaker 3: couple of days. But you know, I think just one
- 26:58Speaker 3: thing to throw out there, just for something for fans
- 27:01Speaker 3: to think about, is This is going to be difficult
- 27:04Speaker 3: on their back end because without Mukuba and Blancanship, safeties
- 27:10Speaker 3: are so important for the Eagles defense and that's where
- 27:14Speaker 3: a lot of Ben Johnson's route concepts really attack is
- 27:18Speaker 3: the middle of the field. So just something to keep
- 27:21Speaker 3: in mind. We can get into more detail on that
- 27:23Speaker 3: in a couple of days. But that's a big deal.
- 27:25Speaker 3: That's a really I mean, we know mccoob is out,
- 27:27Speaker 3: you know, pretty much for the rest of the season.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Blancanship is not going to play Friday. I can't imagine
- 27:33Speaker 3: he's going to play Friday at him. You know.
- 27:36Speaker 1: In fact, he's got that thigh injury. He left thigh injury.
- 27:40Speaker 1: He just couldn't come back in the game. So that's
- 27:42Speaker 1: not a good sign. And Citney Brown and again we
- 27:44Speaker 1: will talk on the defensive part of the show. But yeah, yeah,
- 27:48Speaker 1: it's it's tough man on the short weeks. Short weeks
- 27:50Speaker 1: are very, very difficult, There's no question about it.
- 27:52Speaker 2: All right.
- 27:53Speaker 1: For Greg co Sell on inside the tape, I'm Adam Kaplan.
- 27:57Speaker 1: We'll speak to you soon, Red Red and
