- 1:02The following footage is certified pg.
- 1:05Pretty great.
- 1:07It's Anomaly Presents with your friends, the Podcastronauts.
- 1:14Sounds like a lot of supernatural baloney to me.
- 1:17Supernatural, perhaps baloney, perhaps not.
- 1:22Ho ho ho.
- 1:23It's the most wonderful time of the year.
- 1:27It's the Anomaly Preview show for 2026.
- 1:32My name is Matt Austin.
- 1:33I am joined by the Podcastronauts.
- 1:35We've got Megan Murphy.
- 1:37Aha.
- 1:38I'm here.
- 1:38Can't get rid of me.
- 1:40We've got Kristen Pelk Pacheco, also known as kp.
- 1:43Hey, everybody.
- 1:44And the man of the hour, the man with all the power.
- 1:49Yeah.
- 1:50No, I don't.
- 1:50Know if I like that.
- 1:54Your favorite film programmer's favorite film programmer, it's Adam Lubito.
- 1:59Adam,.
- 2:00Yay.
- 2:01Excited to be here,.
- 2:03Talking about.
- 2:04Anomaly films.
- 2:05Excited to have you here, man.
- 2:06You are.
- 2:07I'm gonna give you your flowers.
- 2:09As I do every year, Adam spends an inordinate amount of time not only finding the films that you see on the screen, but working with everybody in the industry to make sure that he can show them to you.
- 2:22It is an unbelievable undertaking and he does it with grace.
- 2:29And the man's a fucking genius is what I'm trying to say.
- 2:33Adam Lubito is a genius and you're about to see his work on screen along with all the filmmakers.
- 2:41But.
- 2:41Well, I don't know how to respond to any of that, but thank you.
- 2:45Thank you.
- 2:46You have to accept it.
- 2:48Yeah.
- 2:48Yes.
- 2:49Yeah.
- 2:50Sorry, I don't mean to.
- 2:51Yeah, I do.
- 2:52I do.
- 2:53Lock the door.
- 2:54He's gonna run.
- 2:55Adam's amazing and he's ours, so.
- 2:59That's right.
- 2:59It's the.
- 3:01It's that time of year.
- 3:02It's the Anomaly preview show.
- 3:03We are mere days away from the anomaly Film Festival, November 11th through 15th at the Little Theater at the Dryden Theater.
- 3:13Both historic places.
- 3:14We've said that before.
- 3:15We'll say it again.
- 3:18Yeah.
- 3:19So get your tickets and passes now.
- 3:20They are all on sale@anomalyfilmfest.com and I know what you're asking.
- 3:24You're saying, Matt Podcastronauts.
- 3:26What am I buying tickets for?
- 3:27What am I buying a pass for?
- 3:29Just so happens we're gonna tell you.
- 3:31You don't trust us.
- 3:32I mean,.
- 3:33Just come in blind.
- 3:34It's fine.
- 3:34When have we.
- 3:36When have we.
- 3:37Multiple times.
- 3:38Listen, listen.
- 3:39New here news site.
- 3:40Don't even worry about it.
- 3:42I feel like over the last seven years, we have earned trust.
- 3:48Yeah.
- 3:49Respect.
- 3:51Yes.
- 3:52Caution, as far as what we hand out to people as they walk into the theater, which Is perfectly fair.
- 3:56Perfectly reasonable.
- 3:57What?
- 3:57That's.
- 3:58Not.
- 3:59It's true.
- 4:00And we'll do it again.
- 4:01It's all Megan's fault.
- 4:02Thank you.
- 4:05So let's get right to it.
- 4:06Let's cut to the chase.
- 4:07We're going to talk about kind of the highlights of this year.
- 4:10The things that you are not going to want to miss in the Anomaly Film Festival.
- 4:14And where shall we start?
- 4:17You're asking me?
- 4:20We should start at the very beginning.
- 4:24Why not?
- 4:25Let's say Kung Fu Deadly.
- 4:26Kung Fu Deadly.
- 4:27I love that idea.
- 4:29So Kung Fu Deadly is so much fun.
- 4:33Horror, action comedy, Irish whole conceit is two exterminators, two best friends kind of stumble upon.
- 4:48Nefarious plots.
- 4:50Nefarious plots.
- 4:50Nefarious.
- 4:51Ancient plots.
- 4:53Nefarious.
- 4:54Possibly vampire adjacent plots.
- 4:58A recurring theme this year.
- 4:59Yes.
- 5:00Yeah.
- 5:00We.
- 5:00May be saying vampire quite a bit.
- 5:03You'll be.
- 5:04Seeing many vampires.
- 5:05This.
- 5:05Year.
- 5:05I think these are fair.
- 5:07Vampire adjacent.
- 5:08Yeah.
- 5:09I would say take a drink every time you hear vampire, but I can't be responsible for your actions at that point.
- 5:15Just could be water.
- 5:16You could be so hydrated and in.
- 5:18Time.
- 5:19To come and watch the wonderful films that we have.
- 5:22For you.
- 5:23Will never be more hydrated if you drink every time you hear an vampire.
- 5:27Yeah.
- 5:28So it is the perfect movie to kind of start with.
- 5:32It is fun, it is funny, full of, of action, a little bit of goo.
- 5:41Don't worry, we got, we got goo for you.
- 5:43I made sure, I make sure I make a note of every screener and I, I do a little goo levels because it's, it's important.
- 5:50Okay.
- 5:52We know, we know what you like.
- 5:53I know what I like.
- 5:54And.
- 5:54It's hashtag gorgoo.
- 5:57But it's kind of, I, I, I'm trying to think of what it would put me in the mind of if, if, if you're an Anomaly veteran.
- 6:06It's got some extraordinary, I was gonna say.
- 6:08Extraordinary I feel like is the obvious, you know, comparison with the Irish sense of humor.
- 6:14And goo.
- 6:14And goo.
- 6:16So much goo.
- 6:18Jars full.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:20Wistful look.
- 6:21Yeah.
- 6:23So it's a great way to open up, open up the festival and open up what we're doing this year.
- 6:28It kind of sets a nice tone for it.
- 6:30It's, it's fun.
- 6:31I highly recommend, if you're looking for one, that you just want to come out and have a good time.
- 6:36Not that you're not going to have a good time at all of our movies, but this one is a real light, fun, fun movie to hang out and eat popcorn and get the anomaly.
- 6:44Yeah.
- 6:45Well, I mean, and technically, if it's our first film, you will get potato.
- 6:50If you're a.
- 6:51Pass holder.
- 6:52If you are a pass holder, you will get potato, which is a fantastic snack.
- 6:57As you go into the.
- 6:59That.
- 7:01Not gonna finish.
- 7:02Oh, my God.
- 7:04Take off headphones.
- 7:06Like, I've had enough of this.
- 7:08I'm taking my Murphy.
- 7:09Butt out of here.
- 7:11I'm back.
- 7:11Don't take your Murphy.
- 7:12Butt out of here.
- 7:14Terrible.
- 7:15Yeah.
- 7:16Does that fall out from the wall?
- 7:19That would be so much better.
- 7:20Right where you just.
- 7:21It was just in when you don't need it, out when you do.
- 7:24Yeah.
- 7:25Next try again.
- 7:26Nature.
- 7:31And as always, we.
- 7:32We.
- 7:34Every feature is preceded by a short, and the short is ends giving.
- 7:39It's.
- 7:40It's.
- 7:40It's the perfect one to get you in the holiday spirit, you know, because, like, we're all going through hard times, and it's about a friend group that's going through hard times.
- 7:48You know, end of the world zombie kind of.
- 7:51But you still take the time out, and.
- 7:53And the rituals are important, and you still have as much of a Thanksgiving as you can have, which might involve, like, spam you found in.
- 8:03In.
- 8:04In a destroyed grocery store, or it might involve having a timer in case one of your friends get bit.
- 8:10And you only have a little bit of time to celebrate, but you want to get every second,.
- 8:13Like I say.
- 8:13You want to bring every moment.
- 8:14You can with it.
- 8:15It's just beautiful.
- 8:15It's not, like, out.
- 8:16It's like, okay, let's set the timer.
- 8:19And if you start getting bitey, you have to go.
- 8:21I feel like, you know, and is a very funny short, but also it has that, like, hey, you know, sometimes you just, like, just ride it out with the people you love.
- 8:31You can't control the big things, but you can control your table and who you invite and what you eat to make it shape like a turkey to hold on.
- 8:45So speaking of biting,.
- 8:47We.
- 8:47Have a couple different ways to jump into here.
- 8:50Yeah.
- 8:50Yeah.
- 8:53Let's keep it kind of thematically appropriate.
- 8:55I love Paris.
- 8:56We'll go from beginning to yeah.
- 8:59And I love Paris.
- 9:02I do.
- 9:03Me.
- 9:03Too.
- 9:03I see you all.
- 9:04And she will insist upon it.
- 9:06Yeah.
- 9:07Yeah.
- 9:08French found.
- 9:10Footage.
- 9:11Yeah.
- 9:11It's a documentary.
- 9:14Don't worry.
- 9:15It's not real, everybody.
- 9:16As far as I know, there's not vampires in Paris.
- 9:18It's.
- 9:18If there was a place where there's vampires, though, it's probably.
- 9:20There.
- 9:21That's.
- 9:21A.
- 9:21Safe bet.
- 9:22Believe that 100%.
- 9:24We meet a young musician named Paris.
- 9:26And she's ambitious.
- 9:27She's hungry for fame, but early on in the film, not really a spoiler, something else happens, and she becomes hungry for something more.
- 9:36Like blood.
- 9:37So then what do you do?
- 9:39No, you're not going to stop your career.
- 9:40You're going to keep your ambitions.
- 9:42And now you just have a little extra complication.
- 9:45But that's okay.
- 9:46Maybe you find out about yourself and what you're willing to trade is your humanity worth, like, fame and fortune and also vampirism as a metaphor.
- 9:55But also.
- 9:56No, she's really a vampire in this, though.
- 9:57Like, this isn't just a metaphor.
- 9:58She is a vampire.
- 9:59Full on vampire.
- 10:01Yes.
- 10:01Yeah, it's.
- 10:02It's fun.
- 10:03It is very clever.
- 10:06I like that it has a protagonist.
- 10:08That maybe she's not likable all the time.
- 10:11Maybe Paris isn't making decisions that you're, like, cool, but you're still very much engaged and you want to figure out, like, maybe she's young.
- 10:18She's got to figure out what's important to her.
- 10:20Will she take a bite of the apple?
- 10:22Well, I guess.
- 10:23Neck of fame and reject any family or friends, or does she maybe, you know, grow a bit of a conscience after he becomes.
- 10:31After she becomes a monster?
- 10:32Who knows?
- 10:33Everybody.
- 10:33Who could tell.
- 10:34You could.
- 10:35After you watch I Love Paris.
- 10:36Yeah.
- 10:37Yeah.
- 10:37It's for folks that are, I guess, the closest analog, if you're thinking.
- 10:41Oh, I.
- 10:42This sounds interesting.
- 10:43Closest analog, I guess, and it's an easy one to say, is what we do in the shadows.
- 10:47Yeah.
- 10:47Yeah.
- 10:48I mean, I guess man bites dog, but way less nihilistic.
- 10:51Man bites dog, but yes, it's.
- 10:52Way less ni.
- 10:53I promise you, this one gets a little dicey, but it's not that.
- 10:57Well,.
- 10:58I appreciate that.
- 10:58This one doesn't.
- 10:59Shy away from the darkness of.
- 11:02Vampire.
- 11:02Existence.
- 11:04There's one shot I promise you want to be in the theater for, because I think we're all going to gasp.
- 11:08I am.
- 11:09I'm looking forward to that.
- 11:10It's one of the ones that.
- 11:11Yeah.
- 11:11You might see a little bit light leaking in as we peek in.
- 11:17For those of you that get motion.
- 11:18Sick.
- 11:18I would say just prepare.
- 11:21Maybe bring some, you know, take some Dramamine or something.
- 11:23Yeah, it's worth it, but it.
- 11:25The.
- 11:25Yeah.
- 11:25That camera never stops moving.
- 11:26That's okay, because never.
- 11:27Paris doesn't either.
- 11:29That's right.
- 11:29Yep.
- 11:30That's right.
- 11:32Moving on.
- 11:33Who wants to take the next feature?
- 11:37Well, I just talked.
- 11:37It's on you.
- 11:38Yeah,.
- 11:40Kp, I'm Gonna put you on the spot.
- 11:42Okay.
- 11:43Let me look at my.
- 11:43Not.
- 11:44Because.
- 11:44I saw many things.
- 11:46Meanwhile.
- 11:46Meanwhile, we'll vamp by talking about KP being.
- 11:50Yeah.
- 11:51The best.
- 11:51A superhero.
- 11:52Oh, please.
- 11:54Like human spreadsheet.
- 11:56And I mean that as a compliment.
- 11:57As something that is impossible for me to do.
- 12:00Look at my notes, which are not legible, which is great.
- 12:03The superpower of organization.
- 12:04Yeah.
- 12:05I'm astounded.
- 12:06Every year playing Drive kp,.
- 12:09The reason anything runs on time for Anomaly is escaping.
- 12:13Sure.
- 12:14Thank you.
- 12:15Thank you.
- 12:16I would say no rest for the wicked.
- 12:18Okay.
- 12:18Yeah.
- 12:19Well, just.
- 12:20Keep on that theme.
- 12:21It's gonna be hard to escape.
- 12:23Yeah, exactly.
- 12:24So what?
- 12:25It's a kind of folklore romance involving a whaler.
- 12:32And it is so beautiful.
- 12:34I will say that, like, on this isolated island.
- 12:37It's absolutely gorgeous.
- 12:38The Pharaoh Islands.
- 12:40Do you know that there are 18 volcanic islands and it's off the coast of Denmark?
- 12:46There are no trees and no mountains and they have their own language.
- 12:49Faroese.
- 12:50Yeah.
- 12:51Because that becomes a part of the film where they have our little romance there has somewhat of a language barrier.
- 12:58Brought to you by the Faroe Islands Vacation Club.
- 13:01Come to the Faroe Islands.
- 13:03Nothing bad will happen to you while you're here.
- 13:05I.
- 13:05Was sold.
- 13:06I mean,.
- 13:06Yeah.
- 13:07Beautiful.
- 13:08Yeah.
- 13:09Attractive men.
- 13:09Hot.
- 13:11The siren song is calling out.
- 13:16If you're into hot, wet sailors.
- 13:20Who isn't?
- 13:22I am watching our ticket sales right now, and they are going through the roof in this movie after that.
- 13:29Hey, would you like wicker?
- 13:30But it's in Danish.
- 13:31Have at it.
- 13:32Yeah.
- 13:33I'm starving.
- 13:33We got any Danish left?
- 13:35Oh, God, we should have given up.
- 13:37You should have gotten Danish.
- 13:38I mean, it's probably kind of offensive, but also.
- 13:40I want some Danish.
- 13:41Yeah,.
- 13:43Please.
- 13:43Yeah.
- 13:44Sorry.
- 13:44Oh, no, you're good.
- 13:45Did I do a little research on the Faroe Islands?
- 13:47It was very.
- 13:48Good.
- 13:48Yes.
- 13:49No,.
- 13:49I'm sold.
- 13:50I would like to.
- 13:51Go on vacation there.
- 13:51But.
- 13:52Yeah.
- 13:52No, so you've.
- 13:53You've got your romance.
- 13:54You have your little societal pressures involved there, and family drama.
- 14:03Yeah.
- 14:03You know, do you leave home and make your own way and start your own things, or do you, you know, take care of your mom and stay in this very, very, very small village and all you've known,.
- 14:18Just damp sweaters and sheep and fish.
- 14:21Yes,.
- 14:22But it's beautiful.
- 14:23And you're doing every job in this village.
- 14:26They all do everything together.
- 14:28It seemed like.
- 14:29Yeah.
- 14:29Yeah.
- 14:29There's no privacy on this damn island.
- 14:32Oh, my God.
- 14:35Also.
- 14:35Hey, the whaler.
- 14:36I've forgotten the actor's name.
- 14:37I feel bad, but I realized he was Euron Greyjoy in Game of Thrones.
- 14:42Oh, okay.
- 14:43Is that a nice character?
- 14:44No, he's a Greyjoy.
- 14:45They mostly suck.
- 14:46But, like, if you want to see him, like, hotter.
- 14:48Yeah.
- 14:49And, like, more.
- 14:50Yeah.
- 14:50More approachable.
- 14:51Even when the supernatural happens.
- 14:53Still way more approachable.
- 14:54Yeah.
- 14:54Yeah.
- 14:55I.
- 14:55Did often ask myself, I wish I could see a hotter grade Joy.
- 14:58Yeah, That's.
- 14:59That's what I'm saying.
- 14:59We're all watching it, going, man, I hope these.
- 15:02What if.
- 15:03They're damp?
- 15:04Angry island people, as opposed to.
- 15:07These were damp, but, like, I guess, resigned island people.
- 15:10Yes.
- 15:11Yes.
- 15:12Bring a sweater.
- 15:14Yeah,.
- 15:17Bring a sweater.
- 15:18Indeed.
- 15:19It's preceded by the Bones Exist, which I think, of the folks that caught that one.
- 15:30It is a fan favorite.
- 15:33It's almost a feature in its own right.
- 15:35So it's really kind of a double bang for your buck.
- 15:40The Bones Exist is a wonderful short.
- 15:44I don't want to ruin anything about it because it's kind of a mystery box, but when you get into it, you feel like, oh, boy, that was awesome.
- 15:53Just like a whaler.
- 15:54Don't know where you're gonna get to.
- 15:56Get in there.
- 15:58There are.
- 15:59There are creatures involved.
- 16:01Yeah.
- 16:01So I.
- 16:02That's.
- 16:02It's gonna be a really fun time.
- 16:04Oh,.
- 16:04Yeah.
- 16:04I'm looking forward to that.
- 16:05I definitely think this is gonna be one of the ones that people are talking about.
- 16:09When it kind of has a wider release, it's gonna be one of those kind of.
- 16:12It is a slow burn, and the movie itself, it's a slow burn, but when you're part, like, when it finds its audience, it's like one of those, like, you should go see that.
- 16:20See that damp.
- 16:21See the.
- 16:23Damp movie.
- 16:25Yeah.
- 16:25Multiple reasons.
- 16:26Wink,.
- 16:27Follow, follow Greyjoy to,.
- 16:30You know, all of his adventures.
- 16:32Yeah.
- 16:35I'm trying to see.
- 16:35Do we have anything drier that we could go with after the damp movie.
- 16:42If we went the other way?
- 16:43There are things that are wetter.
- 16:46There are.
- 16:46I was like.
- 16:47I was like, yeah.
- 16:48Looking at the list, you said, wait a minute.
- 16:50I have wetter or colder.
- 16:53Oh, that's a good point.
- 16:54We could go either direction.
- 16:56Why don't we go wetter and then go colder?
- 17:00Okay, well, here's the thing.
- 17:01I'm going to talk a lot about the peril of pincer point, but I don't want to take that from someone because I've been talking a lot.
- 17:05But also.
- 17:06Okay, everybody, if you like.
- 17:07If you want to know what the most Megan movie of the festival is, it's very much the peril at Pincer Point.
- 17:14Yes.
- 17:15If you, I, I feel like if you followed us for long enough, you know that Meg and I have, have similar aesthetics and I, I believe that she and I both had like the weird Charlie Brown smiles after
- 17:27we watched Pincer Point.
- 17:29It's, it's, you know, I don't know.
- 17:30Do you like Guy Madden films?
- 17:32Do you like artistically, like it looks like it comes from another, another time period, even though it's taking place in the present day.
- 17:39So do you like movies about making movies?
- 17:41Do you like movies that end up involving nautical folklore and pirate tales and a main character who will never take a warning no matter how beautifully or ethically it is given to him.
- 17:54Hey, do you like crabs?
- 17:56Regular sized crabs, dog sized crabs, Crabs that are also pirates that are on a haunted ship that you can be cursed to be a part of when you get bit by one of them and say if you got
- 18:07bit by one of them and you kept hearing that like, hey, you're cursed now, you would probably take it seriously at a certain point.
- 18:12Hey, our main character never does and the movie's all the better for it.
- 18:17Just endlessly delightful.
- 18:19I.
- 18:19Mean,.
- 18:19Calling it Guy Madden by way of Hundreds of Beavers.
- 18:22Oh my God, yes.
- 18:23Which.
- 18:23Is, yeah, it's got that handcrafted inventiveness.
- 18:27It's gorgeous.
- 18:28Like when you get little clips of this movie that's being made, it feels like this like silent film out of space and time.
- 18:35Also from understand.
- 18:36Except for a few exceptions, most of the dialogue is improvised and it has that kind of shaggy feeling of like, hey everybody.
- 18:44Okay, so here's the deal.
- 18:45You live on this island.
- 18:47You're a sound engineer guy who's not aware of stuff.
- 18:51Talk and talk about getting a crab bucket and how expensive and awesome this crab bucket is.
- 18:57Because you need a crab bucket because of.
- 19:00I didn't know if I mentioned it.
- 19:01Crabs,.
- 19:01Crabs,.
- 19:02Crabs.
- 19:03All the crabs you could want more.
- 19:04Yeah.
- 19:05And yeah, I agree, it's very much Guy Madden's Hundreds of Beavers.
- 19:09Also Toast of London in there too.
- 19:11Yeah, yeah.
- 19:11I feel.
- 19:12Like there's.
- 19:12Yeah, there's wit to it.
- 19:14It's a delight.
- 19:15But also doesn't take itself too seriously.
- 19:17Even though there are scenes that are being epic.
- 19:19Our main character doesn't realize that he's epically cursed.
- 19:22It never really seems to dawn on him in a way that matters, but we know and we enjoy it.
- 19:28I'm going to focus in on one very specific genre of person right now.
- 19:32If you watched all the sitcoms that came on before Doctor who on WXXI on Saturday nights back in the late 80s, early 90s, and you don't show up to Peril at Pincer Point, I don't know what you're doing
- 19:47with your life.
- 19:47Mr.
- 19:48Humphries would be disappointed.
- 19:49Mr.
- 19:49Humphries would be very disappointed.
- 19:51Along with Mrs.
- 19:52Bouquet.
- 19:53She'd be offended.
- 19:56I.
- 19:56I do love that they're supposedly working on a sequel to it.
- 19:59What?
- 19:59Oh, I would love.
- 20:01To.
- 20:01See more of this world.
- 20:03There.
- 20:03Is nothing I want more than that.
- 20:05I want that sequel right now.
- 20:06Crab pirates.
- 20:07Crab pirates.
- 20:08And they play cards.
- 20:09Crab holding cards.
- 20:10Okay.
- 20:11So adorable.
- 20:14So do we want to go.
- 20:15Go colder now, or do we want to warm up?
- 20:21It's.
- 20:21It's.
- 20:21No,.
- 20:24Let's go colder.
- 20:25Colder.
- 20:26All right, if that's the case, we're gonna go with avalanche.
- 20:28The avalanche.
- 20:30So cold.
- 20:32We're also sticking with the aesthetic here because it's also black and white.
- 20:37Oh, yeah.
- 20:38Yeah, it is.
- 20:40It's.
- 20:40I think the easiest way to describe the avalanche is it's like a Twilight zone episode.
- 20:44Yeah,.
- 20:44100%.
- 20:45It is a.
- 20:48A couple who.
- 20:49Wait, well, they're not a couple.
- 20:50They're exes.
- 20:50And they wake up in a bed together in.
- 20:53And honestly, this is a beautiful cabin.
- 20:55If I had to be stuck here with all my regrets, Impossible Purgatory.
- 20:59It would be here.
- 21:00But they wake up in this bed, and they don't remember how they got there, what's happening.
- 21:05And then all of a sudden, avalanche happens.
- 21:07But instead of the movie becoming, like a survival story, they realize they haven't really eaten, and time's passing weird, and they start celebrating holidays, and they start trying to remember things.
- 21:18Okay, we were in a relationship, but, like, what happened?
- 21:21Why are we here?
- 21:22And it becomes very much a.
- 21:23Why are we stuck in this cabin?
- 21:26What does it mean?
- 21:27And one of the things I enjoy the most about it is it's kind of the audio by our friend of the fest and lover of zebra cakes, Andrew Scott Bell.
- 21:36Yes.
- 21:38You're gonna want a good sound system for it, because it's really playing around with, like, a surround sound and being surrounded by something that is keeping you in.
- 21:45Right.
- 21:46But also the mystery of.
- 21:47But now you're in this, like, little purgatory womb.
- 21:50What's.
- 21:51What's going on?
- 21:52What's.
- 21:53What up?
- 21:55And, yeah, it's dealing with the feeling of being trapped.
- 21:59But, like, the avalanche isn't what you're trapped by.
- 22:02Yeah, I was gonna say yeah.
- 22:04Twilight Zone is.
- 22:05Yeah.
- 22:05Immediately what comes to mind.
- 22:06But yeah, I love that it's just the two of them, pretty much only the two of them for the entire running time.
- 22:14And you're just watching them work through some things.
- 22:16Yeah.
- 22:17Work through stuff.
- 22:18Do they.
- 22:19Work through it or do they just go back around?
- 22:22I would say there is a process.
- 22:24Attempting.
- 22:26Eventually.
- 22:27They have all the time in the world.
- 22:28I'd say time enough at last.
- 22:31Yeah.
- 22:31And Megan brings up a great point.
- 22:33It's a film, but all of our films are great to watch in a theater.
- 22:37But this is.
- 22:38One that really lends itself well to a theater.
- 22:41The sound design is incredible.
- 22:44And also visually, it plays.
- 22:47With aspect ratio and.
- 22:50And things kind of move around as it goes.
- 22:53Like the actual structure of the film changes as it goes.
- 22:56And it's such a.
- 22:58Watching it at home made me really get excited for seeing it in the theater and watching it kind of.
- 23:04Experiential.
- 23:05Because.
- 23:06Yeah.
- 23:07Exists in a theater.
- 23:08It's very much an experience as much as it is that Twilight Zone episode.
- 23:13It's definitely going to be, I think, hopefully one of the ones that folks will really talk about.
- 23:19Oh, yeah.
- 23:19Yeah.
- 23:20I mean, afterwards I have opinions and theories and let's trade them.
- 23:24Yes.
- 23:25Yes, please.
- 23:26We don't just show you movies.
- 23:27We like talking about them with.
- 23:29You.
- 23:30Try to shut us up.
- 23:33You can probably hear that from us now.
- 23:34And how excited we are talking about these.
- 23:36But that's kind of a cornerstone of Anomaly.
- 23:39If you haven't been yet, folks.
- 23:41That you have.
- 23:41Thank you so much.
- 23:42And you know what I'm about to say.
- 23:44The festival is just as much about folks getting together and talking about what they've seen as what we're putting up on the screen.
- 23:52So it's a very social experience if you want it to be.
- 23:55It doesn't have to be, but if you want it to be.
- 23:58It's a very social experience.
- 24:00You're among friends and the whole thing is watch cool stuff and talk about it.
- 24:05Yeah.
- 24:05And that's kind of a highlight for me about our festival.
- 24:10And we have multiple nooks.
- 24:11We make sure there's plenty of little places that you can like, go with a couple people and sit down and talk.
- 24:18Yeah.
- 24:19And I mean, Magnus always brings the whiteboard and.
- 24:22I.
- 24:22Like to see, like that grow over the course of the festival.
- 24:25And everyone's doodles and little thoughts on there is great.
- 24:29Love it.
- 24:30Yeah.
- 24:30It's one of the highlights for me, watching people that didn't know each other on Wednesday walk out together.
- 24:36On Sunday Friends.
- 24:37Like, it's, it's a fun experience.
- 24:39I don't, I don't want to say that, you know, you're good.
- 24:41You might, you might come and find your, your soulmate or whatever, but,.
- 24:44Or at least trauma bond,.
- 24:45Or at least trauma bonds,.
- 24:47But in a good way.
- 24:48Be like, anomaly got me again.
- 24:52Oh, we just smile.
- 24:53Yeah,.
- 24:53We did.
- 24:55So I.
- 24:57Trauma bonding.
- 24:58I guess we'll go with little doors next.
- 25:01I, I, I make that noise because I loved it and it, and like, I will think about this one for a very long time.
- 25:07Like, I think I will just be.
- 25:09Like.
- 25:09My own business.
- 25:10And.
- 25:10Then think about this film.
- 25:11Like, yeah, all the conversations after this one.
- 25:15Complimentary.
- 25:16I mean this, like, this is definitely a talk about it after the film.
- 25:18There's much to dig into.
- 25:20Yeah,.
- 25:21Yeah.
- 25:22I, it's hard to get into plot for this one because you don't want to.
- 25:26Again, it's, it's one of those things where you want to let it unfold on its own.
- 25:31I can get this to a point.
- 25:32Right.
- 25:33This is kind of in the basic thing.
- 25:35It's some sort of post apocalyptic end of the world situation, though some people still have to go to jobs.
- 25:41Don't worry.
- 25:42You don't have to worry about definitive world building.
- 25:43This is a vibe, this is a movie's vibe.
- 25:45Right.
- 25:46And we have our main character and she's a very closed off person.
- 25:50Whether this is how she's always been, whether like the end of the world will do it to you, I don't know.
- 25:55But she ends up connected to this optimistic lock Smith and it becomes them.
- 26:03Like, are they gonna have a relationship?
- 26:05They're two different people.
- 26:06They seem to work out.
- 26:07But.
- 26:07And here's the, this is the hook.
- 26:10At one point, the woman wakes up and besides having a rash, the rash on her admin has turned into a little door and something wants out.
- 26:19And it goes from there.
- 26:23Yeah.
- 26:23What would you do?
- 26:25Do you open the door that showed up on your abdomen?
- 26:28I don't know.
- 26:29You said, let me drywall right over this.
- 26:33And is it a meta, Is it metaphors in there?
- 26:35Yes, of course.
- 26:35Also, it's really interesting world building.
- 26:39It is an interesting take on like when the world ends, but you still keep going.
- 26:43Like, what does that look like?
- 26:45What does that look like?
- 26:46And what's worth building?
- 26:47No.
- 26:48Yeah, a.
- 26:50Lot of smoking.
- 26:52So much smoking.
- 26:54So much smoking.
- 26:54And I guess trying to make rocks electric.
- 26:56Yeah.
- 26:57Yeah.
- 26:59That never stopped making me chuckle.
- 27:03Art.
- 27:04Just to be funny.
- 27:07And overalls.
- 27:07And overalls.
- 27:08Cigarettes.
- 27:09Rocks and overalls,.
- 27:10Cigarettes, rocks and overalls for our folks that I guess we'll give everybody a touch point on this one.
- 27:16For our Albert Bernie fans among us, this would be a good one for you to check out for sure.
- 27:21Also, he's literally in it.
- 27:23For multiple reasons, including.
- 27:25He's in it.
- 27:27Oh.
- 27:27My God, that's him.
- 27:28I had already thought, gosh, this feels very elder, Bernie.
- 27:31And then I'm like, oh look.
- 27:33Oh my God, did I manifest him?
- 27:35Oh, we're too powerful guy.
- 27:36By the way,.
- 27:37Chris Lindstrom on the ones.
- 27:38And twos here tonight.
- 27:40Howdy.
- 27:40Howdy.
- 27:41It's a beautiful day.
- 27:42Thanks, Chris.
- 27:44So positive.
- 27:44So little.
- 27:45Doors is preceded by Megan.
- 27:48Is this our favorite short for the year?
- 27:50Oh, I don't know.
- 27:53That's involved reading.
- 27:56Okay, I know it's my favorite one.
- 27:58Here's the thing.
- 27:59I don't know if I have.
- 27:59You know what I'm gonna do?
- 28:00I'm not gonna explain anything about this.
- 28:02All I'm gonna do is I'm gonna say the title and you'll know it's a very anomaly short.
- 28:08I'll never stop laughing when I think about it.
- 28:11It's fantastic.
- 28:11It's weird.
- 28:13It's called Wall utter and you will get both of those in this short, I promise you.
- 28:20It is not a lie.
- 28:21That is not a metaphor.
- 28:23It's very real and it's on a wall.
- 28:26The title does say it all.
- 28:28Yeah, it does.
- 28:29What it says on the tin.
- 28:30Or.
- 28:31The carton.
- 28:31Or.
- 28:32The carton.
- 28:34I wasn't gonna say it was my favorite, but I feel like it is the most, most anomaly possibly.
- 28:40Shorts that we have 100% that although in terms of favorites it is up there.
- 28:44But yeah, I feel like if you distill anomaly down to its purest essence, I feel like it would resemble wall Utter.
- 28:50There are.
- 28:51I.
- 28:51I think I can probably count on a hand how many in a year as we're screening stuff that I immediately finish and text Megan.
- 28:58Yeah, Yep.
- 28:59Drop everything right now and watch this.
- 29:02Get the mat text.
- 29:03I'm like, oh, here we go.
- 29:04This was one of maybe two or three this year where I was like, hey, you're as weird as I am.
- 29:11Watch this now.
- 29:12Watch.
- 29:12This.
- 29:12I gotta talk about it.
- 29:13I need someone to talk to.
- 29:14I can't go out in public and scream wall iron.
- 29:17No.
- 29:18One will understand.
- 29:19I.
- 29:20I can't afford another weekend away.
- 29:22So I really.
- 29:25Starting to get a record.
- 29:27Is it a punch card?
- 29:29Yeah,.
- 29:30I'm here again.
- 29:31What I scream out this time.
- 29:32Wall Utter.
- 29:33Oh, My God.
- 29:34Two punches,.
- 29:35Five grippy socks.
- 29:36Get the six one free and I'm just not ready for that.
- 29:39So.
- 29:39Yeah, so wall letter.
- 29:41Yeah, that, that precedes little doors.
- 29:44Let's see.
- 29:45Oh man, there's so much good stuff.
- 29:46Do we want to do.
- 29:47Do we want to take a short film interlude and talk about some shorts that we have in our shorts programs?
- 29:52Sure, let's do it.
- 29:54Where do we want to start?
- 29:55Kp.
- 29:56So we've got Zola was at the top of my mind.
- 30:01Bring your tissues because if you're not crying at the end of this one, I, I will be side eyeing you.
- 30:08Making notes for the back psychopath.
- 30:10Yeah, you.
- 30:11Okay, okay.
- 30:13Just you know, very great interpretation with you know, the cutest slash ugliest dog you've ever seen and you know what happens in the afterlife kind of and it's just I want a whole fleet of that dog.
- 30:29That dog is so adorable.
- 30:31And yeah, I, it had me on my couch crying too.
- 30:35Oh yeah, it'll get you.
- 30:37It'll get you for sure.
- 30:39I have our, I think it's our shortest short, Bootstrapped, which I can't even tell you what it's about because I me telling you about it would be longer than the short.
- 30:49But if you want to see something delightful, you know like we like to put in sprinkle little bites like you're like wait, what was that?
- 30:55It was called Bootstrapped and.
- 30:58Like.
- 30:59A delight like a sci fi movie in like two and a half minutes just after going.
- 31:04Yeah, that's how I would react.
- 31:06I think that would be me.
- 31:13So I'm going to come off the back of that and tell you the good news about the shorts.
- 31:17This year we have another one from Chris McEnroy, folks.
- 31:20Yeah,.
- 31:22We forgot about the zombies.
- 31:24We joined a cult, right?
- 31:26Yeah, we've had one like consecutive years for I don't even know now.
- 31:31There's been past like three or.
- 31:32Four.
- 31:33Yeah,.
- 31:33It feels like it's not anomaly without Chris McEnroy.
- 31:37So he's kind of our good luck charm this year it's.
- 31:39It's Cher, Cher, cher with an umlaut over the A as it should be.
- 31:49And for anyone that's ever had, I mean we live in Rochester, we don't have taskrabbits.
- 31:54So for anyone that's had the unique experience of trying to put together some Scandinavian furniture on your own, just you and an allen wrench.
- 32:05Even a mallet.
- 32:06Or even maybe a mallet, it'll.
- 32:10It'll go right to your heart and.
- 32:13It.
- 32:13Kind of went to his too, a little bit, so.
- 32:17Shame.
- 32:19I still.
- 32:20All I want is the printable version of the instruction manual.
- 32:24Oh, yeah,.
- 32:25The instructions are so good.
- 32:29We should make those and hand them out afterwards.
- 32:33Yeah.
- 32:34Also, how many shorts programs do we have this year?
- 32:37Is it just one?
- 32:39Why?
- 32:39No, it's not.
- 32:40No.
- 32:40What?
- 32:41Not.
- 32:41Did we do it again?
- 32:43We.
- 32:43We did.
- 32:44We did it again.
- 32:44We.
- 32:45Had so many good.
- 32:46We couldn't.
- 32:46We couldn't.
- 32:47We were fist fighting.
- 32:48I mean,.
- 32:49Almost literally fist fighting for a lot of you.
- 32:51This is a mercy for us.
- 32:52We have two shorts programs because even then, at least a couple of them got a fight at the Applebee's parking lot.
- 32:59That's.
- 33:00True.
- 33:00We all have our favorites.
- 33:01Like.
- 33:01No, no.
- 33:02Oh, I'm leaving.
- 33:03It has to be this one.
- 33:04It has to be.
- 33:04This one,.
- 33:05Or I will blow up this entire festival.
- 33:07It's over.
- 33:09This prevents that.
- 33:10For the sake of anomaly, we had to make two.
- 33:12Short.
- 33:12Programs.
- 33:13Otherwise.
- 33:13Yeah.
- 33:13We couldn't sustain.
- 33:15That's.
- 33:15True.
- 33:15For the sake of anomaly, for the sake of our health insurances.
- 33:19Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:20We're getting older.
- 33:21I was like, listen, I'll do it.
- 33:22I know it'll hurt me as much as it hurts you.
- 33:25I love the shorts so much.
- 33:26Yeah.
- 33:27So this is.
- 33:28Comes from a place of love, everybody.
- 33:29It is.
- 33:30Yeah.
- 33:30We love the shorts and we love you, and that's why they're so nice.
- 33:33We did it twice.
- 33:35Yeah.
- 33:36That was smooth, right?
- 33:37Yeah.
- 33:39And then I ruined it by pointing it out.
- 33:40How smooth.
- 33:43Let's see.
- 33:44Do we want to do a couple more before we move back to the features?
- 33:48Check, please.
- 33:51It's.
- 33:52Few and far between that.
- 33:53We get action.
- 33:53I.
- 33:53Was gonna say it's always a treat when we get an action short film.
- 33:58Yeah.
- 33:59And.
- 34:00This is a great one.
- 34:00Yes.
- 34:01Just, you know, from the name.
- 34:03Fighting over the check and who's gonna pay.
- 34:07And it doesn't stop.
- 34:09It's like one of the best action films I've seen.
- 34:12And like, how long is it?
- 34:13Like 10 minutes.
- 34:14And it's just like, boom.
- 34:15Yeah.
- 34:16You know when the choreography is joyful, when you're enjoying the fight choreography, like, oh, that's.
- 34:20Oh, look at that.
- 34:21And I love when they use what's available in the environment as part of the fight.
- 34:27I'm like, oh, there you.
- 34:28Go.
- 34:28There you go.
- 34:29What would I do if I was in the restaurant?
- 34:30Oh, I wouldn't even think to use it.
- 34:32Now I.
- 34:32Now I will, though.
- 34:33You're.
- 34:34Ready.
- 34:34I'm right.
- 34:34I'm ready.
- 34:35Just so, you know,.
- 34:37It very much puts you in the mind of like old school, heyday, Jackie Chan style environmental fight scenes.
- 34:43It's a blast.
- 34:44And it's got a little bit of a message there.
- 34:46It's.
- 34:46Yeah,.
- 34:47It's, it's.
- 34:47It's one of my favorite parts of this year.
- 34:50I shouldn't say one of my favorites because they're all really.
- 34:52Freaking good.
- 34:53There's not, there's not any that we're mid on.
- 34:56These were all tough choices.
- 34:59Top of the top.
- 35:00Yeah.
- 35:01I love all my shorts equally.
- 35:03As we.
- 35:03Said, we couldn't even narrow it down to one shorts program.
- 35:06No, we.
- 35:06Yeah, we had to give you as many as we could possibly fit in because the filmmakers this year, every year, were just so good at what they do and we couldn't, we couldn't justify not doing.
- 35:16It.
- 35:17Yeah.
- 35:20Speaking of action sequence.
- 35:22Oh.
- 35:22Oh, no.
- 35:22Okay.
- 35:23I don't know where we're going.
- 35:23I don't know where.
- 35:24We're going.
- 35:24What's next?
- 35:25Where are we going?
- 35:26We're gonna jump back into features real quick just.
- 35:28Cause it's a nice.
- 35:28Yeah,.
- 35:29It's a nice segue.
- 35:32So every year we go to the Dryden.
- 35:35Our friends at the Dryden, possibly against their better judgment, let us come and invade the theater for an evening.
- 35:46I say that against our better judgment, but they are our co conspirators with us.
- 35:49They go and find some cool stuff in the basement.
- 35:52This year is no exception.
- 35:54And we were talking about it before the show and it's kind of the.
- 35:59The most bang for your buck, I think we have in the entire festival.
- 36:03You've got.
- 36:03Oh.
- 36:04Oh, absolutely.
- 36:05Two shorts and a feature.
- 36:07The first short, Dagon.
- 36:09Yeah.
- 36:10You like weird eldritch stuff, but it's animated.
- 36:14It's beautiful.
- 36:15Oh, you're like.
- 36:16It's.
- 36:16Gorgeous.
- 36:17It's.
- 36:17It's good stuff.
- 36:18And to see it like not just on the big screen, but the Dryden, I mean, you're probably more of a chance of getting cursed, but it's.
- 36:24It's worth it.
- 36:25Okay.
- 36:25I'm just saying it's worth it.
- 36:26You just have to cheer loud enough when the curtain raises.
- 36:28And then that's your charm.
- 36:30Okay.
- 36:30Yeah.
- 36:30Everybody listen.
- 36:31KP is right.
- 36:32You.
- 36:32You clap like you've never clapped before and it'll protect you.
- 36:35That and the crab charms.
- 36:37Yes.
- 36:38You'll know what I mean later.
- 36:39Don't.
- 36:39Well, you probably have an idea.
- 36:43Yeah.
- 36:43Thank you.
- 36:45Just like that, everybody.
- 36:46Yeah.
- 36:47And then from Dagon, we go to Rainbow War, which is a short that Imprinted on both Jared Case from the Dryden and our anomal dad, Matt Duterque.
- 37:01Equally, I would say.
- 37:01Adam.
- 37:02I wasn't there to see how the.
- 37:03Two of them.
- 37:04I saw his face afterwards.
- 37:05It was a lit with joy.
- 37:09Jared has just been biding his time looking for any excuse to show this.
- 37:12And we finally, as soon as we got to a moment in the feature, he was like, oh, perfect.
- 37:19We can't not.
- 37:20Play it.
- 37:20I was gonna say.
- 37:21And this is the opposite of blame.
- 37:23Canada.
- 37:23We're gonna thank Canada.
- 37:25Because this was created for Expo 86.
- 37:28It's a visual smorgasbor board from what I'm told.
- 37:31I have not seen it yet.
- 37:32I'm very much looking forward to it.
- 37:33Yeah.
- 37:34Oh, it's a delight.
- 37:36Yes.
- 37:37Colors are great, everybody.
- 37:39Yeah.
- 37:39Oh, I can't wait.
- 37:41If you have a grudge against the rainbow.
- 37:43Yeah.
- 37:43I think you'll watch this.
- 37:44You'll work through it.
- 37:45Yeah.
- 37:46And if you've ever wondered what Jared Case wants you to see.
- 37:50Rainbow War.
- 37:52And then our feature, which I am over the moon for Zoo warriors from the Magic Mountain.
- 37:59It's a classic.
- 38:00It's a Tsui Hark film which legendary director and it's.
- 38:08It's action film is wuxia.
- 38:11It holds the.
- 38:13The distinction of being the film that inspired not only Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but also Big Trouble in Little China.
- 38:19And that will give you an idea of tonally.
- 38:22Yes.
- 38:23What you're going to see.
- 38:24It is unlike anything I've ever seen.
- 38:26I think I read a review.
- 38:28I think it was Justin Declue from the Important Cinema podcast that described it as the movie that you described to your friends that you saw on TV when you were 12 or the one you tried to act out
- 38:44in your bedroom.
- 38:46And it's just so completely over the top in how it operates.
- 38:50And it's unlike anything you've ever seen before.
- 38:52And I'm so excited to see it in a room full of people.
- 38:54It's going to be such a blast.
- 38:56Oh, yeah.
- 38:57I love the fact that the director brought in special effects people who worked on both Star wars and Tron, and you see both of those.
- 39:06I feel like there's more laser effects than you would expect for a period piece in Tron.
- 39:12It's.
- 39:12All the better for it.
- 39:13It's all the better.
- 39:14Oh,.
- 39:15Y' all are selling me on this because I have not had the chance to see it yet, but I'm like, what?
- 39:20Lasers fighting?
- 39:22Yeah.
- 39:22And I feel like, okay.
- 39:23And here's the thing.
- 39:24Like, it also and this is, this is a.
- 39:26More of a compliment.
- 40:08Anything.
- 40:09Don't worry about the plot.
- 40:11There's.
- 40:11There's the good guys versus the bad guys.
- 40:13That's really all you need.
- 40:15And you can pretty much tell who's who visually, you know,.
- 40:19Perfect.
- 40:19So you just go and you watch like the good guys fight the bad guys in ever increasingly, like frenetically edited, bright colors, lasers flying.
- 40:28I love stuff where like scarves or weapons.
- 40:31That's good.
- 40:32Also Sammo hunger.
- 40:33Yeah.
- 40:34Also, eyebrows are weapons.
- 40:36This is gonna sound wild, but if you ever wonder, like, how could eyebrows be weapons?
- 40:40This movie shows you.
- 40:42Oh.
- 40:42Oh, yeah.
- 40:42Oh, I can't wait to know.
- 40:45You never expect eyebrows.
- 40:46Pure.
- 40:47Spectacle.
- 40:47Yeah, I'll be suspicious of scarves forever.
- 40:49Eyebrows, it'll get me every time.
- 40:53Pure spectacle.
- 40:54I think cast wise, it's probably the equivalent of Ocean's 11 as far as pure star power and.
- 41:01Yeah, like martial arts kind.
- 41:02Of.
- 41:04You'll watch it and go, oh, I've seen him.
- 41:06I've seen, you know, y bow.
- 41:08I've seen.
- 41:09If.
- 41:09You don't know the name, you'll be like, oh, I.
- 41:11I know that face.
- 41:11Cory Yen's in it.
- 41:13Who?
- 41:13We, we love Corey Yen here because DOA.
- 41:19Was like, yeah, yeah,.
- 41:21Yeah.
- 41:21It is a.
- 41:22A who's who cast.
- 41:23It's visually just stunning.
- 41:27God.
- 41:27Plus, it's like an everyman story.
- 41:29Like all this epic stuff.
- 41:30Stuff is happening, but it's just a dude who's like trying to escape.
- 41:33Escape a conflict, ends up stumbling into this fantasy conflict in a mountain.
- 41:38Like, what.
- 41:39What would you do?
- 41:40You know?
- 41:41And you know, you hope it would be like, you know what?
- 41:43Yeah, yeah, you know what?
- 41:44I'm gonna.
- 41:45I'm gonna matter and I'm gonna look cool doing it.
- 41:50Yeah, I'm.
- 41:51I'm stoked to see this with an audience and to see it on film.
- 41:54It's gonna be, it's gonna.
- 41:55I mean, that's.
- 41:56When's the chance you're gonna get to see it like this?
- 41:58Like, genuinely.
- 41:59If you're like kind of a martial arts person, just see if.
- 42:03If nothing else.
- 42:04Right.
- 42:05Make a trip.
- 42:05Come here.
- 42:06See this on the big screen.
- 42:07And then you get to brag.
- 42:09Exactly.
- 42:09That.
- 42:09That's the thing I was remiss with.
- 42:11And I apologize for that because universally, if we're showing something at the Dryden, it's going to be something from the library at the Dryden.
- 42:20So it's a 35 millimeter print and original from when it was released back in 83.
- 42:24Yeah.
- 42:24So it's really something special.
- 42:26And it's probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for you.
- 42:32Definitely.
- 42:33With that program.
- 42:34It's a once in a lifetime experience.
- 42:36If you get cursed by Dagon, you'll be blessed by Zoo.
- 42:39So it actually evens out.
- 42:40You'll be fine.
- 42:41Yes.
- 42:45We only have a little bit left here, guys.
- 42:50I can't believe we packed four days into what, like 40ish minutes.
- 42:53Yeah.
- 42:54Which.
- 42:54Is.
- 42:55So.
- 42:55Efficient.
- 42:55That's what people say.
- 42:56They go Anomaly Efficiency.
- 42:58Efficiency.
- 42:59Yeah.
- 43:00We are often in the same breath.
- 43:02I feel like.
- 43:03Yes.
- 43:04That actually is something that we are good at.
- 43:06It would just be way down the list.
- 43:09We have a lot more silly things.
- 43:11Oh yeah.
- 43:12We're efficient about the silliness.
- 43:14Yes.
- 43:14And maybe that's it.
- 43:15Yes.
- 43:16Yes.
- 43:17I'll take that.
- 43:17Yeah.
- 43:18Yeah.
- 43:19Where do we want to go from here?
- 43:21Because we have so many options left.
- 43:22So we, we.
- 43:23I think we've probably got time for maybe two more features in a short before we have to say goodbye until we see everybody at the festival.
- 43:31Well, I mean, I think one thing we'd probably definitely want to include because we are Anomaly and Thanksgiving are the bridge between Halloween and the holidays.
- 43:41You know, we like to throw in some like, you know, little Christmas horror or, or, or even this, this year, Hanukkah horror.
- 43:50So I think we have a pretty good setup with our feature Red Snow, which will be preceded by the short Gimme.
- 43:57So we're gonna a good chunk of the holidays covered with horror.
- 44:02But thus is the holidays.
- 44:04Get in the festive spirit in a way that only Anomaly can prepare you for.
- 44:08As a warning.
- 44:09Yes,.
- 44:10They're all warnings.
- 44:13Are we doing it in holiday order?
- 44:14This just occurs to me now.
- 44:16I don't.
- 44:17Know.
- 44:18Yeah.
- 44:18Because it's.
- 44:19At the ends.
- 44:19Giving.
- 44:21Oh.
- 44:21Yeah.
- 44:21Oh my God.
- 44:22Then Gimme would come before.
- 44:24Oh,.
- 44:24That was on purpose, everybody.
- 44:26Yes.
- 44:26Totally.
- 44:27Planned.
- 44:27Good job, Adam.
- 44:28Oh my God,.
- 44:28Best.
- 44:29Programming.
- 44:29Ever.
- 44:30This is why I opened the show the way I did.
- 44:33Talking about the genius of Adam Lubito.
- 44:36He specifically studiously planned on having the holidays.
- 44:43Insisted upon it.
- 44:44Yeah.
- 44:44Order.
- 44:44Insisted upon it.
- 44:46Secretly it didn't tell anybody about it and let it bloom on us like he's JJ Fucking Abrams.
- 44:53Yeah.
- 44:53From now on, you're the Damon Lindelof of festival programming.
- 44:59You're like, do I accept this?
- 45:02Processing.
- 45:03Processing.
- 45:04Yep.
- 45:04Yeah.
- 45:05Well, I guess Red Snow is our.
- 45:08And it seems every decade, at least, starting last decade, we get a Finnish horror about Christmas.
- 45:16About 10 years ago there was rare exports.
- 45:18Also beware of Santa because This is another beware of Santa.
- 45:22But.
- 45:22But this year it's not a giant fake creature buried under with lots of little naked other Santas.
- 45:30Um, don't worry.
- 45:31That's.
- 45:32You don't have to worry about this.
- 45:32What you do have to worry about, though, is what if Santa is instead a middle aged vampire who still needs to be invited in, but he's dressed as Santa.
- 45:42The perfect con.
- 45:44And it's a story of a.
- 45:46Kind of like a kind of a young teen girl.
- 45:48She loves Twilight.
- 45:50She.
- 45:51She really loves.
- 45:53Yeah, yeah, she loves, she loves the fantasy of vampires.
- 45:56And her family is kind of like they're going through changes, so this is kind of a thing she holds on to.
- 46:01And she has to go to Christmas dinner at her elderly grandma's house.
- 46:04Oh, man.
- 46:05Oh, I know.
- 46:06I gotta go with my, my, my, my, my sad dad and, and his girlfriend.
- 46:09I don't understand.
- 46:10And my little brother.
- 46:11What a bummer.
- 46:13It's a bummer, but in a different way.
- 46:16When the Santa comes up and he's hungry and it just gets wild there.
- 46:20Their creature design is wild.
- 46:23Yes.
- 46:23The characters are fascinating because as a family we have a vampire hunter who is also toxic and his gothic home care aide who I guess is kind of like Elizabeth Slander.
- 46:35Was.
- 46:36Was your nurse.
- 46:40Right.
- 46:40So.
- 46:41And then it's just all these characters get smashing together.
- 46:43How do you survive this?
- 46:45Do you, you know, do.
- 46:46You want to survive?
- 46:47You want to survive this?
- 46:48And then the whole idea, like, maybe the vampire fantasy isn't.
- 46:52Isn't the fantasy and also, you know, toxic masculinity.
- 46:56Okay, everybody, I'm just saying, like, this comes up a couple times and maybe that's one of the biggest problems at the heart of this issue.
- 47:03It's underlying horror of a lot of these films.
- 47:05Go.
- 47:06To therapy, everybody.
- 47:07Go family therapy.
- 47:08Let go of some of that toxicity.
- 47:10Don't.
- 47:11Don't be a vampire.
- 47:13There's also goo.
- 47:15Yeah,.
- 47:16Yeah.
- 47:18I'm trying to remember.
- 47:18My brain blocked out.
- 47:19The goo.
- 47:21I think the.
- 47:21Creature.
- 47:22Design just.
- 47:22Ties.
- 47:23Over the goo.
- 47:23Creature design is what.
- 47:25Really stands out, which is amazing.
- 47:26Yeah.
- 47:27They're not.
- 47:28Vampires in a way that you, I would say, have not seen before.
- 47:31No, no.
- 47:32Del Toro is the closest.
- 47:34Yeah.
- 47:35But it takes it a couple steps further.
- 47:38Yeah, it's, you know, I mean, it's not nihilistic.
- 47:41It is a bit of a, like, shadowy tail, but, you know, it's, it's got stuff to say and it's kind of a hoot.
- 47:52Yeah.
- 47:53Oh, hoot.
- 47:54Would you say a hoot and a half.
- 47:56Ooh, yeah, yeah.
- 47:58Tell them that Megan said you add that half.
- 48:00The Megan Murphy guarantee.
- 48:03And a half.
- 48:03It's just me.
- 48:07All right.
- 48:07What's that last feature?
- 48:08Last feature.
- 48:09We have a couple options left.
- 48:10Where do we want to go?
- 48:13I.
- 48:13Defer to you.
- 48:14I feel like we have to mention Blood and Guts just because it is.
- 48:18Yeah.
- 48:19I always like to work in a documentary when we can.
- 48:21And this is one on a subject that is, I feel like, near and dear to anomalies hearts.
- 48:26Yes.
- 48:27About the first.
- 48:29First family, for sure.
- 48:30Why not?
- 48:30100%.
- 48:30Let's give them the title.
- 48:31The Addams Family of Hellbender and Mother of Flies last year.
- 48:36This is a documentary about their family and their filmmaking process as their.
- 48:42Their family goes through some changes and puts together their next project.
- 48:46It is.
- 48:47It's a unique documentary because, I mean, we kind of have a small connection to them.
- 48:54Like, we've met them, they've been at the festival.
- 48:57We.
- 48:57We really enjoy the Addams Family.
- 48:59They're all very delightful people.
- 49:02We really enjoyed their movies.
- 49:03That's why we screened two of them.
- 49:05All that to say, if you don't know the Addams Family from Morticia and Gomez, that's fine.
- 49:12That's perfectly fine.
- 49:14Because this is an engaging documentary.
- 49:16Beyond that, it's such a fascinating family dynamic.
- 49:19It's unique enough that even if you don't have a connection to the family and the films they've made, it's still so interesting to see how they.
- 49:28What their creative process is.
- 49:30If you're somebody who likes to see how the sausage is made, this is a great movie for you.
- 49:34Also their Blood and Guts titular.
- 49:37Blood and Guts.
- 49:38Yeah, exactly.
- 49:39But also, if you enjoy documentaries about a family dynamic, it's got something for everybody.
- 49:47You don't have to be a horror fan.
- 49:49You don't have to know chapter and verse about Hellbender or whatever.
- 49:54This is just a great documentary about a family who loves each other, supports each other, and.
- 50:01And is passionate about making cool shit.
- 50:05Yeah.
- 50:07And we're passionate about the people that make cool shit.
- 50:10Yes.
- 50:11And that's why we do the Anomaly Film Festival.
- 50:13Again, I don't want to speak for everybody, so if anybody wants to disagree with what I just said, you're more than welcome to it.
- 50:18I don't know that you will, but.
- 50:21So that's what the Anomaly Film Festival is annually.
- 50:24You've just heard what we're programming this year.
- 50:27Is this an inclusive list?
- 50:28It is not.
- 50:30If you want the inclusive list, check out anomalyfilmfest.com.
- 50:35While you're there, if you haven't already, you can purchase your tickets and passes, which I highly recommend, because if you've sat through this last now 50 minutes or so, and you're like, oh, well, I should maybe go do
- 50:50that.
- 50:50Don't do the Rochester thing of waiting two minutes before the movie starts to come out.
- 50:55I mean, we'll be there.
- 50:56We'll be there yesterday.
- 50:57At.
- 50:57The box office waiting for.
- 50:58You.
- 51:00But I'm going to tell you, you're going to be disappointed because how many times has it happened to you?
- 51:05Because it happens to me all the time.
- 51:06You're like, oh, I'm going to go do that thing.
- 51:08And then it's, you know, 15 minutes into the thing, you're like, damn, I missed that.
- 51:13Don't do that to yourself.
- 51:14There's so much cool stuff that we're doing in Anomaly this year.
- 51:17It's not just the films.
- 51:18It's not just the short films.
- 51:20It's not just the features.
- 51:21It's the community.
- 51:22It's the fact that we do a lot to make it more than a film festival.
- 51:27We've got.
- 51:29We've got a crew of artists that have been working on stuff almost year round since our last festival to create stuff for the lobby.
- 51:38Matt and Adam have taken road trips to buy thousands of videotapes for the eyeball video store that you're going to find at the Little.
- 51:48Not to mention whatever Dan is doing.
- 51:52And, you know, Magnus is in that workshop.
- 51:54So we don't even know sometimes until it shows up.
- 51:58Yeah, they're like, oh, put this together.
- 51:59What?
- 52:00That's a shoot.
- 52:01That's a.
- 52:01Magnus will just show up with bits and pieces and say, this one goes here, this one goes here, and.
- 52:05It's.
- 52:06The coolest puzzle that's ever happened.
