- 0:00Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and welcome to another episode
- 0:04of the United Church of Tonga Youth Devotion.
- 0:08The Bible reading for today is taken from the book of Proverbs chapter 12 verse 1.
- 0:14Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.
- 0:21The theme, do you love discipline? When we ask ourselves whether we love discipline,
- 0:27perhaps very few would answer yes.
- 0:30Discipline is often linked to negative emotions and experiences.
- 0:36When we think of discipline, we envision strict parents or teachers.
- 0:41We are associated with punishments.
- 0:45The book of Proverbs reminds us that those who love discipline also love knowledge.
- 0:51In some translations, discipline refers to instructions.
- 0:56When we accept instructions, we gain knowledge.
- 1:00We need discipline or instructions. Without them, we are lost.
- 1:06Imagine driving on the road without any guidance or discipline.
- 1:11There would be so many accidents.
- 1:14God's discipline is good for us. When God disciplines us, he also provides the
- 1:21rewards or consequences of our choices.
- 1:25God commanded Adam not to eat from the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good
- 1:32and evil and even punished him for doing so.
- 1:35This represents God's discipline. He is a just God. When he gives instructions
- 1:43and outlines the consequences of not following them, he stays true to his word.
- 1:50Accepting God's instruction shows that we love him and that his discipline is part of our lives.
- 1:59This suggests that we value knowledge.
- 2:03The Proverbs also says that whoever hates correction is stupid.
- 2:09It's interesting to reflect on this part of the verse because we dislike being called stupid.
- 2:17However, today we learn that being stupid means hating correction.
- 2:21It is through discipline or instructions that we understand what we should do as children of God.
- 2:30We must be corrected so that our mindset and lifestyle align with the Word of God.
- 2:38Let us pray. Dear Lord, please grant me the heart that delights in learning
- 2:47from your teachings and embracing your guidance according to your word.
- 2:52Let me be open to correction through the scriptures.
- 2:58In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
