- 0:48Speaker 1: The time has come, so let out a cheer.
- 0:51Speaker 2: It's like someone put a curse on this town. It
- 0:56Speaker 2: all started when that kid drowned last summer. There's something
- 1:00Speaker 2: in these woods, and all it knows how to do
- 1:04Speaker 2: is kill.
- 1:06Speaker 1: The time has come, so let out a cheer.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Mommy's here.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Camp Crystal Lake, oh, we love you. Hello, everyone, and
- 1:16Speaker 1: welcome to the Culture Meltdown. I am one of your hosts,
- 1:18Speaker 1: the host of the CultureCast, Chris Stashew, and I'm joined,
- 1:21Speaker 1: as always, by the other host of this show. He's
- 1:24Speaker 1: the host of Movie Meltdown over at weirdingwaymedia.com, the newest
- 1:27Speaker 1: show added to weirdingwaymedia.com, Brian Renfro.
- 1:30Speaker 2: How's it going?
- 1:33Speaker 1: Good. Better than people that are chasing after Linda Cardinelli's
- 1:38Speaker 1: Pamela Voorhees, or should I say Pamela... twittering what the
- 1:44Speaker 1: what the fuck is going on in this show brian
- 1:46Speaker 1: because you're confused already good lord yeah on this show
- 1:51Speaker 1: brian and i like to talk about things that uh
- 1:53Speaker 1: we want to talk about and we have not explored
- 1:56Speaker 1: the world of tv uh i have not done it
- 1:59Speaker 1: on my feed before but i'm super excited to because
- 2:02Speaker 1: tv is something that i watch just about as much
- 2:04Speaker 1: as i watch movies i watch it's about 50 50
- 2:06Speaker 1: in a lot of ways i watch a lot of
- 2:07Speaker 1: stuff and it's either tv or movies there's Or I
- 2:10Speaker 1: guess YouTube videos, but that's kind of its own thing.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It's kind of hard to critique. But TV and movies
- 2:15Speaker 1: are kind of it. And so I'm so glad we
- 2:16Speaker 1: get to talk about movies most of the time. But
- 2:19Speaker 1: I'm even more excited to talk about TV because this
- 2:22Speaker 1: is a TV show based on a movie. And it's
- 2:26Speaker 1: a prequel TV show to a franchise that has been
- 2:30Speaker 1: languishing in... courtroom hell for the last, oh my God,
- 2:36Speaker 1: five years now because of the rights being similar to
- 2:41Speaker 1: another show that the gentleman who was going to make
- 2:44Speaker 1: this show initially did not get to make it. But
- 2:47Speaker 1: his other show has also similar courtroom issues with who
- 2:52Speaker 1: owns what. We're talking about Crystal Lake, a show that
- 2:56Speaker 1: was originally created by Brian Fuller, who created Hannibal, which
- 2:59Speaker 1: is a show that I'm talking about in reference to
- 3:01Speaker 1: The issues that who owns what came into with this show,
- 3:05Speaker 1: because this show is a prequel. to Friday the 13th,
- 3:09Speaker 1: the first movie. That is specific because this is a
- 3:14Speaker 1: prequel story about Pamela Voorhees and Jason the Child. Not
- 3:19Speaker 1: Jason the Killer. That's a character that's owned by, I guess,
- 3:24Speaker 1: the Jason universe people. That's the Jason with a hockey mask.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, if you've seen Scream, the answer to
- 3:32Speaker 1: who's the killer in Friday the 13th is Pamela Voorhees,
- 3:36Speaker 1: not Jason. She's killing people because her son drowns at
- 3:41Speaker 1: Camp Crystal Lake. The third movie, three and a half,
- 3:45Speaker 1: three and a half, right? I mean, it's like halfway through.
- 3:47Speaker 2: The third movie. It's middle of the third movies before
- 3:50Speaker 2: we get the Jason we all know and I guess love.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. Yeah, I was about
- 3:54Speaker 1: to say that's that's it. We'll get to that here
- 3:56Speaker 1: in a second. But this is a prequel to Pamela
- 3:59Speaker 1: Voorhees's story about her son, Jason, drowning in Camp Crystal Lake,
- 4:05Speaker 1: which is really just the first movie. And this is
- 4:08Speaker 1: all specific because this show is about Pamela Voorhees, not
- 4:13Speaker 1: Jason Voorhees. The killer as we, like you said, all
- 4:17Speaker 1: know and love, which is important.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Which is kind of when I got interested. Like I
- 4:21Speaker 2: heard a while ago, they were toying with the idea
- 4:25Speaker 2: of making a prequel-y Crystal Lake kind of a thing.
- 4:28Speaker 2: And I was like, ugh, whatever. Because they always want
- 4:31Speaker 2: to come up with all of that. And we can
- 4:33Speaker 2: definitely dig into that as we go on.
- 4:34Speaker 1: But.
- 4:35Speaker 2: then when i found out linda was involved i was
- 4:39Speaker 2: like oh now now now we're talking because i'm always
- 4:43Speaker 2: kind of on board with her even in the weird
- 4:46Speaker 2: stuff she's ended up over the years i'm like she's
- 4:49Speaker 2: she's always good in everything even the lesser projects she's
- 4:52Speaker 2: the best part of it so i'm like well now
- 4:55Speaker 2: at least they're not you know just throwing any random
- 4:58Speaker 2: streaming actor in and like gonna make it work like
- 5:01Speaker 2: they've bought in they've They brought in somebody who is
- 5:04Speaker 2: a name and who is an actor that I actually
- 5:07Speaker 2: think is good and respect. So now I'm kind of
- 5:10Speaker 2: interested in the whole idea. So that just sort of
- 5:14Speaker 2: floated there until I saw the first trailer and went, oh, no,
- 5:17Speaker 2: I think we're going to have to talk about this.
- 5:18Speaker 2: This looks like it's going to be good or bad,
- 5:20Speaker 2: interesting regardless.
- 5:23Speaker 1: And so, yeah, on these next. Four episodes of Culture Meltdown.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Brian and I will be talking about the eight episodes
- 5:32Speaker 1: of the first season. I don't know if there's going
- 5:34Speaker 1: to be a second. I haven't finished the show yet
- 5:36Speaker 1: at this point in time. I've only watched the first
- 5:39Speaker 1: four episodes because of the way we're recording things. So
- 5:42Speaker 1: I don't know if there's going to be a second season.
- 5:43Speaker 1: They haven't said, but we are covering at least this
- 5:46Speaker 1: season or first season or only season of Crystal Lake
- 5:50Speaker 1: over the next four episodes of Culture Meltdown, which is
- 5:53Speaker 1: mine and Brian's crossover that we do on both of
- 5:56Speaker 1: our feeds. So that's the way you can listen to
- 5:59Speaker 1: us talking about it. We will be releasing them kind
- 6:01Speaker 1: of piecemeal over the next couple of weeks and trying
- 6:04Speaker 1: to take advantage of the kind of fervor around the show.
- 6:08Speaker 1: There is a little bit of kind of chit chat
- 6:10Speaker 1: around the show. I think the show is getting rather
- 6:12Speaker 1: well received, which is nice. You mentioned something that or
- 6:16Speaker 1: we haven't mentioned something, I guess, that's also important. This
- 6:19Speaker 1: is an A24 thing, which I think also for a
- 6:22Speaker 1: lot of people that brings in a crowd that may
- 6:26Speaker 1: not have been watching Friday the 13th or may have
- 6:30Speaker 1: even thought Friday the 13th is kind of dumb, which
- 6:34Speaker 1: I feel like is part of maybe, you know, slasher
- 6:38Speaker 1: movies get this kind of bad rap. So I wanted
- 6:39Speaker 1: to ask you, Brian, very curious thoughts on Friday the 13th,
- 6:45Speaker 1: the franchise, and then more specifically, Friday the 13th, the film,
- 6:50Speaker 1: the first one, given that, again, like we've talked about already,
- 6:53Speaker 1: this is a prequel thing. I mean, I guess this
- 6:56Speaker 1: is a retelling of the first movie. I don't know
- 6:59Speaker 1: what this is, but this is not anything to do
- 7:02Speaker 1: with pretty much anything past the first movie of the franchise,
- 7:07Speaker 1: as it were. But for me, I am assuming, and
- 7:09Speaker 1: best I can tell, this is like Noah Hawley's Alien Earth.
- 7:13Speaker 1: It's inspired by things we've seen before, but this is
- 7:16Speaker 1: its own world timeline, whatever. We now live in a
- 7:20Speaker 1: universe where people care about that kind of shit. This
- 7:23Speaker 1: could have existed 20 years ago and it would have
- 7:25Speaker 1: just been a thing. And we don't have to answer
- 7:28Speaker 1: stupid fucking mythology or myth arcs or what are they changing?
- 7:31Speaker 1: And is that okay? Like this is its own fucking thing.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Just like the Fargo TV show is its own fucking thing.
- 7:37Speaker 1: And I'm okay with that, but I want to know
- 7:40Speaker 1: your kind of thoughts on Friday the 13th completely, I guess.
- 7:45Speaker 2: It's also interesting that this is A24 on TV because
- 7:50Speaker 2: that's not normally what people know A24 for. So that
- 7:55Speaker 2: is an interesting new little area that they're, I don't
- 7:58Speaker 2: know how much they've done in the past, but it's
- 8:00Speaker 2: definitely not their main area that they're known for. So
- 8:03Speaker 2: that's also kind of interesting. As far as Friday the 13th, again,
- 8:07Speaker 2: I've from before I was conscious of it, I've been
- 8:14Speaker 2: watching horror movies. So like it just as far back
- 8:19Speaker 2: as I can remember, I was watching horror movies. So
- 8:22Speaker 2: I grew up watching all of the slashers in general.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I saw most of them at home on TV. I
- 8:29Speaker 2: was watching stuff on cable. I probably shouldn't have been.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And then renting stuff as the, as I got a
- 8:36Speaker 2: little older and was renting my own things. So I
- 8:38Speaker 2: watched a It's one of those, I feel like the
- 8:43Speaker 2: slashers in particular for horror fans became that thing that
- 8:49Speaker 2: we all, it was sort of like collecting baseball cards,
- 8:52Speaker 2: you know, not to mix it with sports because that's
- 8:55Speaker 2: not normally a geek thing, but it was one of
- 8:57Speaker 2: those that like, well, you had to, you had to
- 8:59Speaker 2: have that one. Like I had to know what happened
- 9:01Speaker 2: in Friday the 13th part seven. So when I get
- 9:04Speaker 2: together with the other dorks, we can make these references
- 9:07Speaker 2: about that. Or I know the, the overall story arc
- 9:10Speaker 2: with Jason, like, well, what happened in five? Cause it's
- 9:13Speaker 2: not like the rest of them. So You almost had
- 9:16Speaker 2: to collect them all so that you would get the
- 9:19Speaker 2: overall zigs and zags, ups and downs of this crazy
- 9:23Speaker 2: story as it told all of the different slashers, all
- 9:26Speaker 2: of the reboots and reinventions and all of that stuff.
- 9:29Speaker 2: It's like you needed to just sort of watch them
- 9:33Speaker 2: all as you went along to sort of create your
- 9:36Speaker 2: own personal story. system of horror or your own little
- 9:42Speaker 2: world of horror that you knew what you knew about
- 9:45Speaker 2: horror and it would all just sort of gel in
- 9:47Speaker 2: your brain and you would create you know everything you
- 9:50Speaker 2: knew and liked about horror movies so that's where mine
- 9:53Speaker 2: all happened it's like I watched all of those over
- 9:55Speaker 2: the years I don't think I missed any of them
- 9:58Speaker 2: along the way and then, uh, I eventually went back
- 10:04Speaker 2: and I've picked up a few here and there, but
- 10:06Speaker 2: it's still, it's still probably a lesser of the slashers
- 10:11Speaker 2: for me. No offense. I still like it. It's a
- 10:15Speaker 2: solid horror movie. Anytime you see one, even the dumber ones,
- 10:20Speaker 2: it's always there to deliver exactly what you want from
- 10:23Speaker 2: a Friday the 13th movie. But again, is he the
- 10:26Speaker 2: most charismatic slasher out there? I don't know. I, as
- 10:31Speaker 2: previously mentioned on a for another episode. I was a
- 10:35Speaker 2: sucker for Michael Myers from the beginning. I think he
- 10:38Speaker 2: had such a cool like image and a vibe that
- 10:41Speaker 2: he brought to it. Like he's kind of top tier.
- 10:44Speaker 2: I liked Freddie when he started cause he was dark
- 10:46Speaker 2: and weird. He got super silly, but like those were
- 10:49Speaker 2: probably more of my go-to. And then Jason was always
- 10:52Speaker 2: just Jason and like, he just did his Jason thing.
- 10:55Speaker 2: So Again, it was not my go-to for slasher, but
- 11:01Speaker 2: it was always there and always a solid slasher. So
- 11:06Speaker 2: I've watched most of those all the way up through
- 11:10Speaker 2: the reboot, which died, which is also, I think, why
- 11:14Speaker 2: we had such a long period of them not attempting
- 11:17Speaker 2: to do anything else because nobody cared about that reboot movie.
- 11:21Speaker 2: And then it's just sort of satched with them trying
- 11:25Speaker 2: to decide what to do with it until this new,
- 11:27Speaker 2: let's make a TV show idea came about.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I'm super disappointed that that reboot movie never went anywhere.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I just like to say that out loud. Yeah, I
- 11:39Speaker 1: liked it. I liked it about as much as I liked... Well,
- 11:44Speaker 1: I don't know. I was going to say about as
- 11:45Speaker 1: much as I liked the Nightmare on Elm Street one,
- 11:47Speaker 1: but I think that the Nightmare on Elm Street one
- 11:49Speaker 1: was so.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Just exactly what I was expecting it to be. It
- 11:54Speaker 1: was just a reboot. Like at least the Friday the
- 11:56Speaker 1: 13th one was different. It did have something more than
- 12:00Speaker 1: nothing in terms of originality.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I feel like Nightmare also, there was something just off
- 12:07Speaker 2: about the whole vibe of it. Like not just that
- 12:11Speaker 2: as much as I like that actor, like he's not
- 12:13Speaker 2: Robert Englund, so it's hard to do that anyway. But
- 12:15Speaker 2: even the kids, it was just a weird vibe. I
- 12:19Speaker 2: remember when it came out, we did a whole episode
- 12:21Speaker 2: and like, that was my main thing. It was like,
- 12:23Speaker 2: it does like, these are the most not real kids ever.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Like they're not real high school kids. And maybe it
- 12:31Speaker 2: was saying something about that next generation that was coming along.
- 12:34Speaker 2: But I was like, that was my main issue with
- 12:36Speaker 2: that attempt at a reboot was like, like in the
- 12:39Speaker 2: first Nightmare on Elm Street, like third, high school kids
- 12:43Speaker 2: and they're hooking up at her house. And like half
- 12:46Speaker 2: of the time, it's like those two trying to get
- 12:49Speaker 2: together and hook up. Like it's the most devoid of sex.
- 12:54Speaker 2: And like, even just them, like having contact with each
- 12:58Speaker 2: other in that reboot of nightmare on Elm street. Like
- 13:01Speaker 2: it's so not like humans function. It's so cold and
- 13:06Speaker 2: detached that I feel like that's also part of why
- 13:08Speaker 2: that one didn't work. Whereas the Friday the 13th, the
- 13:11Speaker 2: characters were OK. Again, it's not amazing, but like it
- 13:16Speaker 2: did a decent job of Friday the 13th. And it
- 13:19Speaker 2: did sort of try to put its own spin on
- 13:21Speaker 2: it and do sort of a retelling of one in
- 13:24Speaker 2: two of the old series crammed into a new sort
- 13:27Speaker 2: of doctored up story. but it was fine. I'm, I'm,
- 13:31Speaker 2: I would think, you know, there's been way worse slasher
- 13:34Speaker 2: movies that got six more sequels after that. So I
- 13:37Speaker 2: don't know that it was so bad. It didn't need
- 13:39Speaker 2: any more bad sequels, but that's what happened.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I really like Rooney Mara as an actress, but she
- 13:48Speaker 1: was beyond miscast in that movie. And it's, it's such
- 13:53Speaker 1: a shame because like you, you, like you've already said,
- 13:55Speaker 1: like I, I wanted to like that Nightmare on Elm
- 13:58Speaker 1: Street movie because Nightmare on Elm Street for me is
- 14:01Speaker 1: my franchise. It's like that and Scream and then Hellraiser.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Like Friday the 13th for me. I have seen the
- 14:08Speaker 1: first one one time. That's it. I'm probably the best
- 14:12Speaker 1: and worst, depending on who you ask, person to watch
- 14:15Speaker 1: this show, because I really don't have any brand affiliation
- 14:19Speaker 1: with Jason. For me, the Jason movies that I've seen
- 14:23Speaker 1: that I've enjoyed, the reboot with Jared Padalecki, because I'm
- 14:27Speaker 1: a supernatural guy. The first four seasons of that show
- 14:29Speaker 1: were first two or three, I'm trying to remember exactly
- 14:32Speaker 1: when the show effectively like felt like the end was,
- 14:36Speaker 1: it was like whenever the yellow eyed demon died, I
- 14:38Speaker 1: think I was like, it.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Was all angels and demons. It became such a huge
- 14:43Speaker 2: part of it.
- 14:44Speaker 1: I was like, damn it.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I don't even know what's going on anymore. I tuned
- 14:47Speaker 2: out early on, I think just for no real reason.
- 14:49Speaker 2: I just got sidetracked and busy doing other stuff. And
- 14:52Speaker 2: like after the first season or two, I wasn't keeping
- 14:55Speaker 2: up with it anymore, but I would see just enough
- 14:56Speaker 2: every once in a while to be like, wait, what are.
- 14:58Speaker 1: We doing now? And then by the time it ended
- 15:01Speaker 1: during the fucking pandemic, it was on for 14 years, dude.
- 15:06Speaker 1: It was, it was insane how long the show was on.
- 15:09Speaker 1: It ended, it ended during the pandemic. And you can
- 15:11Speaker 1: tell by the time the show ends, because there's like, whoa,
- 15:14Speaker 1: Sam and Dean are talking to each other and they're
- 15:16Speaker 1: the only ones. It's like, there's not anyone else within
- 15:21Speaker 1: earshot even. And so for me, I, I have like
- 15:26Speaker 1: zero brand affiliation for Friday the 13th. So going into
- 15:30Speaker 1: this show, like I wasn't going to watch the show,
- 15:33Speaker 1: not because I don't like Friday the 13th. I wasn't
- 15:36Speaker 1: going to watch the show because Friday the 13th is
- 15:38Speaker 1: just not, if it was a Nightmare on Elm Street
- 15:40Speaker 1: TV show, I probably wouldn't have watched it either. Because
- 15:42Speaker 1: at this point, like a lot of these legacy brands
- 15:46Speaker 1: are just kind of treading water, really. Like, Hellraiser, eh?
- 15:52Speaker 1: I haven't seen the one with the female Hellraiser.
- 15:57Speaker 2: It doesn't have Doug. I'm not even wasting my time.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I don't know. I've heard it's okay. Fuck, dude. Those
- 16:03Speaker 1: movies are... Talk about bad movies.
- 16:06Speaker 2: The first two are good. I like the second one.
- 16:09Speaker 1: I like the third one.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I haven't watched the third one in a long time.
- 16:13Speaker 2: It's so dumb. It's where they.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Start becoming dumb. And then the fourth one is like,
- 16:17Speaker 1: it's in space now. And it's like, okay, whatever.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Well, it's the fourth one. They had to go to space.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I mean, Leprechaun 4 went to space.
- 16:23Speaker 2: They all did. That's the thing.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah, fuck it.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I mean, that's the thing.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Jason X for me is one of my favorites because
- 16:28Speaker 1: it's just completely insane. Yeah, it's like it has the
- 16:32Speaker 1: frozen face kill. It has the like Jason.
- 16:35Speaker 2: The sleeping bag kill.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it has the sleeping bag kill. It has the
- 16:38Speaker 1: Jason like, you know, nanobot version where he looks proper
- 16:42Speaker 1: fucking horrifying like a goddamn monster. Like, you know, and
- 16:46Speaker 1: that's the thing. I also and this is genuinely the
- 16:50Speaker 1: most I ever really see Jason. and again, it'll probably
- 16:53Speaker 1: make some people who listen to this a little irked,
- 16:56Speaker 1: but stay with me here, folks, I promise. Freddy vs.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Jason.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Everyone's favorite movie. Yeah, I mean, it's not bad by
- 17:05Speaker 1: any stretch of the imagination.
- 17:06Speaker 2: That's the one, actually, that's the one I missed out
- 17:08Speaker 2: on for years. And just in the last few years,
- 17:11Speaker 2: I kept going, wait, I didn't see that, did I?
- 17:13Speaker 2: It's not bad. I finally went back and watched it.
- 17:16Speaker 2: It's fine. Again, it's not a great one for either
- 17:19Speaker 2: of them. So it's just sort of like, eh. Yeah,
- 17:22Speaker 2: they're both here. Like, it's a cool concept.
- 17:24Speaker 1: It's exactly what it needs to be. It's like Alien vs. Predator,
- 17:27Speaker 1: you know? I feel like if Freddy vs. Jason or
- 17:29Speaker 1: Alien vs. Predator was done now, I genuinely feel like
- 17:34Speaker 1: people would... Do it differently. I feel like 10, 15
- 17:40Speaker 1: years ago, it was just, you have these dipshits smashing
- 17:44Speaker 1: action figures together really hard and saying like, what are
- 17:49Speaker 1: we doing here? And it's like, now I think there's
- 17:52Speaker 1: some nuance to what people are doing. Which leads me
- 17:55Speaker 1: to Crystal Lake. You and I were joking about this
- 17:59Speaker 1: couple of things. We're going to talk spoilers. I hope
- 18:02Speaker 1: you don't listen to this thinking we're not like, who
- 18:04Speaker 1: are you? If you listen to this and you're like,
- 18:06Speaker 1: I'm not going to spoil the show for me. If
- 18:08Speaker 1: you are on the fence about this show and you
- 18:11Speaker 1: are a fan of things such as Hannibal, such as Dexter,
- 18:15Speaker 1: such as you can fucking see where I'm going here
- 18:17Speaker 1: with this. Like it, it, the, the, it, are you
- 18:20Speaker 1: talking about it? The movie?
- 18:22Speaker 2: Well, I mean that if you like it, the movie,
- 18:25Speaker 2: I don't think this would be king, but this is
- 18:28Speaker 2: also the show runner is the guy who did welcome
- 18:30Speaker 2: to dairy.
- 18:31Speaker 1: So yeah. Okay.
- 18:33Speaker 2: That's his other most recent thing. So I'm like, if
- 18:36Speaker 2: you liked that, which I heard good things, I just
- 18:38Speaker 2: hadn't gotten to it yet, but like one of the
- 18:41Speaker 2: other people on my show really liked it. So I've,
- 18:44Speaker 2: I've heard decent things.
- 18:45Speaker 1: It's much better than, and guess what I rewatched recently?
- 18:48Speaker 1: I rewatched those fucking Pennywise movies recently. And man, that
- 18:52Speaker 1: second movie is three hours long. That's what I.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Was going to say. I really liked the first movie.
- 18:57Speaker 2: And then I saw the second one and went, oh, whoa,
- 19:00Speaker 2: what have you guys done? How can you take the
- 19:02Speaker 2: same basic idea but mess it up so bad? It's
- 19:06Speaker 2: so not.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Entertaining like insanely masturbatory like it is and you know
- 19:11Speaker 1: what the sad thing is like there's a fun bill
- 19:13Speaker 1: hater performance in there and a james ransom performance rest
- 19:16Speaker 1: in peace performances but it just doesn't save the movie
- 19:20Speaker 1: like jessica chastain and and james mcavoy doing hard r
- 19:24Speaker 1: city everybody because i'm from the uk like I watched
- 19:31Speaker 1: a couple episodes of Welcome to Derry. It's interesting. But
- 19:36Speaker 1: I think for me, I just kind of don't give
- 19:39Speaker 1: a shit about Pennywise and the Pennywise universe. It's just
- 19:43Speaker 1: not for me something that resonates with me. I am
- 19:46Speaker 1: much more interested in what's going on with Crystal Lake,
- 19:50Speaker 1: primarily because A, it is a complete 180 from what
- 19:55Speaker 1: I would have expected this thing is going to be
- 19:57Speaker 1: in terms of a TV show. And B, because at
- 20:01Speaker 1: the end of the day, like you've already said, the
- 20:03Speaker 1: guy who's doing the show, regardless of my feelings on
- 20:06Speaker 1: it as a movie or TV show, he clearly understands horror,
- 20:11Speaker 1: horror movies, horror TV shows, and horror in general. And
- 20:16Speaker 1: you know what? If you get it and you can
- 20:18Speaker 1: give it emotional core, which I think the Derry show clearly,
- 20:22Speaker 1: I think, has in a lot of ways. from what
- 20:24Speaker 1: I could tell. This show also has that, but it's also,
- 20:28Speaker 1: and again, of the episodes of the Welcome to Derry
- 20:31Speaker 1: show that I watched, there was some really fucked up
- 20:32Speaker 1: shit going on in that show. Like in the first episode,
- 20:35Speaker 1: the really, yeah, like some real wild shit going on.
- 20:38Speaker 1: And man, if we don't say it here right at
- 20:41Speaker 1: the beginning, the first episode of this show opens with
- 20:44Speaker 1: Linda Cardinelli covered in blood, picking a tooth out of
- 20:46Speaker 1: her hand.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, we've all had those weekends. It's Sunday morning,
- 20:51Speaker 2: you wake up like that. I mean, it's like things
- 20:54Speaker 2: get out of control. And you've got a tooth in
- 20:55Speaker 2: your fucking hand. Sometimes.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Depends on the weekend. Right. Have you seen Hannibal, the
- 21:03Speaker 1: TV show? No.
- 21:07Speaker 2: I've seen... I might've missed that last movie too. I've
- 21:11Speaker 2: seen the old school movies and then, uh, I liked
- 21:15Speaker 2: the idea of Hannibal, but again, I think it just
- 21:17Speaker 2: got away from me when it was first on. And
- 21:19Speaker 2: then there was, it kept going. I was like, well
- 21:22Speaker 2: now I'm so far behind. And then I just haven't
- 21:24Speaker 2: gotten into it. So I've heard nothing but good things
- 21:27Speaker 2: about Hannibal.
- 21:29Speaker 1: It is so similar to this show in a lot,
- 21:31Speaker 1: like the tone and the expectation and the way they're
- 21:34Speaker 1: doing things and the the, the storytelling mechanics of like, Oh,
- 21:39Speaker 1: we're going to, you know, nine weeks ago or whatever.
- 21:42Speaker 1: And it's like, I was hooked from the moment the
- 21:46Speaker 1: show opened. Yeah. It's a really good show. I think
- 21:51Speaker 1: you would agree, right? Like I think this is, this
- 21:53Speaker 1: I think does for Friday the 13th, what I think
- 21:57Speaker 1: a lot of horror franchises do. want which is being
- 22:02Speaker 1: taken seriously but not so seriously that we lose sight
- 22:06Speaker 1: of how goofy and fucking weird friday the 13th.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Is see that's what i was surprised by is like
- 22:13Speaker 2: it it started out and it seemed like what i
- 22:15Speaker 2: kind of assumed most streaming shows that are kind of
- 22:18Speaker 2: digging into a property over several episodes would do and
- 22:22Speaker 2: they're telling the story and then we got to that
- 22:25Speaker 2: aside from her being covered in blood but then we
- 22:27Speaker 2: got to that first like gore scene and i was
- 22:30Speaker 2: like oh oh no they're not messing around it's.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Like they're really not messing around and.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Once we once we got into the next couple of
- 22:39Speaker 2: episodes that i was like okay no this is this
- 22:42Speaker 2: is made for horror fans and like it's not like
- 22:45Speaker 2: the show itself is something that just anybody could pick
- 22:48Speaker 2: up streaming oh this looks interesting But when you get
- 22:51Speaker 2: to those kills, it's like, no, this is for horror fans.
- 22:54Speaker 2: If you're not a horror fan, you are not going
- 22:56Speaker 2: to be OK with the way some of these people
- 22:58Speaker 2: are being taken out because it is full on slasher movie,
- 23:02Speaker 2: crazy scenarios and over the top gore. Every time somebody
- 23:07Speaker 2: even gets injured in these, it's just like, oh, that's
- 23:10Speaker 2: not a normal injury. That is a horrible horror movie injury.
- 23:15Speaker 2: So that's the part I was happy to see.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Well, and like you said, I mean, there is literally
- 23:19Speaker 1: from the jump of this first episode, like we see
- 23:24Speaker 1: her covered in blood. And then by the end of it,
- 23:27Speaker 1: we understand where the blood came from. And it is
- 23:29Speaker 1: like proper gross. Like, yeah, I mean, not like I
- 23:32Speaker 1: wasn't like grossed out or anything, obviously. I mean, again,
- 23:34Speaker 1: like having seen enough of these things at this point,
- 23:36Speaker 1: like it takes a lot. But it is gnarly when
- 23:41Speaker 1: she's slashing at a guy's face with a machete or
- 23:44Speaker 1: stabbing a guy in the throat. There is a lot
- 23:47Speaker 1: of kind of elevated violence. I'm not saying elevated horror,
- 23:51Speaker 1: but there's a lot of really stylistic violence. And they
- 23:57Speaker 1: lean into the core.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it should just be a basic little like, oh,
- 24:01Speaker 2: you got a machete to the head and then that's it.
- 24:04Speaker 2: But no, it's like she will like, hit them and
- 24:08Speaker 2: shave off part of their face as these things happen
- 24:11Speaker 2: half the time, which has happened like a couple of
- 24:14Speaker 2: times now of like, Oh no, that's, that's, that's a
- 24:18Speaker 2: really gory injury now. And a normal show wouldn't do that.
- 24:22Speaker 2: This is specifically made for horror people. And like that,
- 24:26Speaker 2: they're not messing around. Like they went straight for the
- 24:28Speaker 2: gore because this is Friday the 13th. Why would you
- 24:31Speaker 2: not like.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Well, and you know, when I think of Friday the 13th,
- 24:35Speaker 1: the original movie, It's not the goriest thing I've ever seen.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Definitely not.
- 24:40Speaker 1: No, I mean, fucking Nightmare on Elm Street, the first one,
- 24:43Speaker 1: is much gorier in a lot of ways.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 24:45Speaker 1: It's funny because I think this TV show acknowledges that
- 24:50Speaker 1: people getting killed with machetes is pretty gnarly. And taking
- 24:55Speaker 1: a machete to someone's face or head or body is...
- 25:00Speaker 1: it's a giant knife fucking sword. And getting to see
- 25:05Speaker 1: that guy get his face slashed in that first episode
- 25:09Speaker 1: is it's, it's crazy to me. Like I, again, like I'm, I'm,
- 25:12Speaker 1: I'm really glad that the show, like you said, it
- 25:14Speaker 1: acknowledges the level of violence that is needed to make
- 25:18Speaker 1: this show work. Because I feel like if it hadn't
- 25:21Speaker 1: really said, you know, like, fuck it, we're going to
- 25:23Speaker 1: do violence. We're actually going to do it. Like the dairy,
- 25:25Speaker 1: the welcome to dairy TV show, the like first three
- 25:27Speaker 1: episodes that I watched, there are some pretty like gross stuff,
- 25:31Speaker 1: like gory, gross stuff going on to the level of
- 25:33Speaker 1: those movies. You know, for as much as I don't
- 25:35Speaker 1: maybe like that second movie, they're at least still kind
- 25:37Speaker 1: of gory. You know, I mean, they do have a
- 25:39Speaker 1: level of kind of like gore to them. That's not,
- 25:43Speaker 1: it may be the spectacle at that point. It's maybe
- 25:47Speaker 1: not stylistically the thing that I'm super in love with,
- 25:49Speaker 1: but they're not sanitized by any stretch of the imagination.
- 25:53Speaker 1: And yeah, this show does not hold back, which I appreciate.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Like it, it may be, you know, and like, obviously
- 26:03Speaker 1: with it being a TV show, it is kind of,
- 26:06Speaker 1: you know, the, the thing that we kind of have
- 26:08Speaker 1: to talk about immediately is like the pacing of things. Right.
- 26:12Speaker 1: I think it's paced rather well by me having watched
- 26:15Speaker 1: the first four episodes of the show. Maybe it falls
- 26:18Speaker 1: apart in the last four episodes. And I, you know,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it does, you know,
- 26:23Speaker 1: a lot of TV shows, uh, cannot sustain an entire
- 26:26Speaker 1: eight hour run. And that's a lot of time. I mean,
- 26:29Speaker 1: you know, it's most of the Friday the 13th movies
- 26:32Speaker 1: are an hour and a half. You know, they're not,
- 26:34Speaker 1: they're not clocking in at two and a half hours.
- 26:36Speaker 1: They're not, you know, they're not really like their character
- 26:39Speaker 1: dramas when, you know, they're driven by the plot. Like
- 26:42Speaker 1: now they're fucking not like the first couple are not really,
- 26:45Speaker 1: you know, they're not the most like in depth films.
- 26:48Speaker 1: They're really not. And the thing that this is trying
- 26:51Speaker 1: to do is trying to flesh out and give the
- 26:55Speaker 1: some understanding to why is Pamela Voorhees like this? Why
- 26:59Speaker 1: is Ralph the town weirdo like this? Like what, what
- 27:03Speaker 1: is Crystal Lake the lake mean? How is, you know,
- 27:06Speaker 1: what they're clearly wanting to answer is how the fuck
- 27:10Speaker 1: can Jason come back?
- 27:12Speaker 2: And I don't really know that they're going to. Except
- 27:16Speaker 2: that there's also, and that's what I was saying.
- 27:18Speaker 1: They're going to answer something, Brian. It's clear that they're
- 27:21Speaker 1: going to answer something. Whether or not it's what the
- 27:24Speaker 1: lake is, is beyond me at this point.
- 27:27Speaker 2: In that first promo that I saw that made me go, no,
- 27:30Speaker 2: I think not only do, am I going to watch this,
- 27:32Speaker 2: but we need to talk about it because they did the,
- 27:35Speaker 2: they did that line of like, if they knew what
- 27:38Speaker 2: you two really are kind of a thing. I was like, Oh, okay.
- 27:42Speaker 2: This seems like there's a way bigger thing that.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do fucking stranger thing.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Yeah. It's like, it's going to be thrown into the,
- 27:51Speaker 2: the lore of it all now that it's going to
- 27:53Speaker 2: change all of that and, And that's the part I'm like,
- 27:57Speaker 2: I don't know if that's going to be good or bad.
- 27:59Speaker 2: I was like, but it's going to be something. So
- 28:01Speaker 2: I kind of want to be there for that run.
- 28:04Speaker 2: But yeah, whether or not it really answers the because
- 28:08Speaker 2: that's I mean, there is no real answer for it
- 28:12Speaker 2: in any of the other stuff. And he just comes
- 28:15Speaker 2: back to life. Well, and they don't even address that.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Like he is just sort of the. the scary story
- 28:22Speaker 2: in the woods of it all in the beginning there.
- 28:25Speaker 2: And like they, they just keep telling those stories. He's
- 28:28Speaker 2: the woods boogeyman.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Essentially.
- 28:30Speaker 2: He's the camp boogeyman versus the city boogeyman that Michael Myers.
- 28:35Speaker 2: So it's like, But basically it never answers because then
- 28:39Speaker 2: it's like, well, in the first movie, it's like he's dead,
- 28:42Speaker 2: but he's back.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Why?
- 28:43Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Who cares?
- 28:44Speaker 2: Come back for the next movie. And then by the
- 28:47Speaker 2: time you get to two and three, it's like now
- 28:50Speaker 2: he just wanders around and kills people.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Why?
- 28:52Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah. And by the time you get
- 28:54Speaker 2: to by like six when he's full on zombie, which
- 28:59Speaker 2: basically we've just he's dead and we've used Frankenstein technology
- 29:04Speaker 2: to make him rise from the dead. And now he
- 29:06Speaker 2: just shuffles around like a zombie. And I'm like, well. okay,
- 29:10Speaker 2: is that what he is? They never really just give
- 29:14Speaker 2: you an answer the way that you want, but also
- 29:17Speaker 2: horror fans aren't that worried about it, and they're just
- 29:20Speaker 2: there for him to hack people up. So you just
- 29:22Speaker 2: kind of shrug and be like, yeah, well, that was
- 29:24Speaker 2: pretty cool, so I'll be back for the next one.
- 29:26Speaker 2: What do people really want is the question, right? Machetes
- 29:29Speaker 2: to the head. That's what people want.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Well, and that's the thing. Like, I think that's what
- 29:33Speaker 1: people wanted in the eighties. I think now what people want,
- 29:37Speaker 1: I think is, is more complex than that. I think
- 29:40Speaker 1: people that are watching this at this point, like you
- 29:42Speaker 1: can't just at this juncture in time with Friday, the 13th,
- 29:47Speaker 1: you cannot just give me a guy hacking people up.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Because I've seen it before. Even if you want to say, well,
- 29:53Speaker 1: it's not the best practical effects. Fuck you, Tom Savini.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I think the practical effects in the original films are fine.
- 30:01Speaker 1: That's not the issue with the original films. The issue
- 30:03Speaker 1: with the original films is the stories are completely nonsensical
- 30:06Speaker 1: and make no sense.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Well, they're minimal at best. Those first several, it's just,
- 30:10Speaker 2: you're out in the woods, people are getting killed. The end.
- 30:13Speaker 2: That's all you need.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Why don't we give... this character a proper story. And
- 30:19Speaker 1: I have no problem with that. In a lot of ways,
- 30:21Speaker 1: there's not a literary equivalent to Jason Voorhees. If you
- 30:26Speaker 1: want to say, well, with Hannibal, you just go read
- 30:28Speaker 1: the book. Yes, but the Hannibal TV show has given
- 30:31Speaker 1: you so much more time with the character than the
- 30:33Speaker 1: book ever could have. And that's the thing. This show
- 30:36Speaker 1: gives you eight hours of Pamela Voorhees there's like an
- 30:40Speaker 1: hour and a half in the movie, you know?
- 30:42Speaker 2: And there's a lot more than you expect. Well, and
- 30:47Speaker 2: she's not even the main focus of most of that
- 30:50Speaker 2: first movie because we're busy watching kids do dumb kid
- 30:53Speaker 2: things and hook up and get killed. And like, so
- 30:56Speaker 2: it's only that last finale of like, Hey, it's all
- 30:59Speaker 2: about me. Like then we get a little bit of backstory,
- 31:03Speaker 2: but it's still a fraction of the running time is
- 31:06Speaker 2: spent on Pamela in that first movie. So yeah, this
- 31:09Speaker 2: did at least have so much open space to just
- 31:13Speaker 2: kind of fill in whatever, like all you have to
- 31:15Speaker 2: do is hit these handful of things along the way.
- 31:18Speaker 2: And by the time in the first like 15 minutes,
- 31:21Speaker 2: she's wearing the sweater. I'm like, all right, we're there.
- 31:23Speaker 2: That's all you had to do. Like you just put
- 31:25Speaker 2: her in the sweater and we're, we're 90% of the
- 31:27Speaker 2: way there. Just have her machete somebody and we're done. Like,
- 31:31Speaker 2: so I feel like it, it does that stuff well.
- 31:34Speaker 2: That it needs to do, but it also gives you
- 31:37Speaker 2: a lot more like generalized story that I feel like
- 31:40Speaker 2: would be in a lot of other streaming shows at
- 31:43Speaker 2: this point. It also is kind of hitting that this
- 31:46Speaker 2: is what a streaming show is kind of a mood
- 31:49Speaker 2: that I feel like. With the exception of the over-the-top gore,
- 31:54Speaker 2: regular people that could care less about Friday the 13th
- 31:57Speaker 2: might be on board with this as an interesting, it's
- 32:01Speaker 2: a streaming show about a small town kind of a thing.
- 32:03Speaker 2: And oh, there was this tragedy. And if it wasn't
- 32:06Speaker 2: so damn gory, I feel like your regular mom from
- 32:11Speaker 2: Iowa would sit down and watch this and be fine
- 32:13Speaker 2: with it as an interesting story.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Is it really that much gorier than the last two
- 32:19Speaker 1: seasons of fucking Stranger Things? It's pretty gory. I know,
- 32:24Speaker 1: but so is like Stranger Things. There's characters getting like
- 32:27Speaker 1: tentacles to the chest. And in the last season, there's
- 32:29Speaker 1: dudes getting like fucking tentacle hands through the backs of
- 32:33Speaker 1: their heads. Like, I don't know.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Like, you know what?
- 32:36Speaker 1: When shows started existing outside of what I would consider
- 32:40Speaker 1: to be the network system and you could just watch
- 32:43Speaker 1: things on your TV or on your streaming platform or
- 32:46Speaker 1: on your smart TV or on your phone. I don't
- 32:49Speaker 1: know how you judge any of this shit anymore. Like
- 32:52Speaker 1: the rating systems and everything else are completely fucking arbitrary.
- 32:56Speaker 1: They always have been, but now they're even more arbitrary
- 32:59Speaker 1: because you could just watch whatever the fuck, wherever the fuck.
- 33:01Speaker 1: And the only way to stop anyone from watching it
- 33:03Speaker 1: is by safeguards on your own end.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Kind of like that should have been the fucking thing
- 33:08Speaker 1: the whole goddamn time.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Which nobody does, which once again is back to me
- 33:13Speaker 2: watching stuff I did not need to be watching.
- 33:14Speaker 1: On cable when I was a kid. I go, you're
- 33:33Speaker 1: learning then, you know, I feel like John Cusack in
- 33:37Speaker 1: high fidelity where it's like, what came first, the music
- 33:39Speaker 1: or the misery? Like there's way more depressing music than
- 33:41Speaker 1: any movie I've ever seen. Like I cried listening to
- 33:43Speaker 1: music more than I have ever cried watching a movie.
- 33:47Speaker 1: And that's the same thing here. Like with, with TV now, like,
- 33:50Speaker 1: I don't know if this is a gory TV show
- 33:52Speaker 1: or not. I think, I think everything is fair game
- 33:55Speaker 1: at this point. Genuinely. Like, I think the only thing
- 33:57Speaker 1: you can compare this to are other TV shows that
- 34:00Speaker 1: you could watch. and spend eight hours with where it's
- 34:02Speaker 1: kind of Stranger Things, it. fucking Stephen King. Like this
- 34:09Speaker 1: is not Friday the 13th. This is so like, that's
- 34:13Speaker 1: the thing I appreciate about this show, but I also
- 34:15Speaker 1: feel like some people will be turned off by is like,
- 34:16Speaker 1: this is not Friday the 13th at all because it's,
- 34:20Speaker 1: it's so trying to do something else, which I'm here for.
- 34:25Speaker 1: But you and I both know if you are coming
- 34:27Speaker 1: to this, expecting what you would be getting from a
- 34:30Speaker 1: Friday the 13th movie, you are going to be sorely disappointed.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Because, So I feel like especially in the first episode,
- 34:37Speaker 2: because we're kind of exposed to it and maybe the most,
- 34:40Speaker 2: although we're already getting other snippets of it as we
- 34:42Speaker 2: go along. We also have to address the other big thing,
- 34:47Speaker 2: which is time spent with old school version of Jason.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Like child jason child jason.
- 34:55Speaker 2: So number one and this was my i swear like
- 34:59Speaker 2: i feel like i said it out loud sitting in
- 35:01Speaker 2: front of the tv i was like oh so he
- 35:04Speaker 2: was always like that so i guess i went back
- 35:08Speaker 2: since then i'm like yeah the little clips you see
- 35:11Speaker 2: of him like jumping up and down in the water
- 35:13Speaker 2: about to drown he kind of looked like that too
- 35:15Speaker 2: i guess i don't know I really didn't remember.
- 35:17Speaker 1: It's been, like I said, a long time. Are you
- 35:19Speaker 1: talking about with the hydrocephalus head?
- 35:21Speaker 2: Yeah, just the fact that he was a special needs
- 35:24Speaker 2: kind of a kid, where I was like, I think
- 35:26Speaker 2: in my head, I was just like, I don't know,
- 35:27Speaker 2: he was a kid, and then he died.
- 35:28Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, no.
- 35:30Speaker 2: By the time he comes back, he looks like this,
- 35:33Speaker 2: and that's the way we get him from there on.
- 35:34Speaker 2: But I don't think I thought about him as a
- 35:37Speaker 2: regular kid beforehand, one way or the other.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:40Speaker 2: This is like throwing you in the middle of, oh, no,
- 35:43Speaker 2: this is this is Jason. And here's what he was like.
- 35:45Speaker 2: So that's that's a lot to kind of process, really.
- 35:48Speaker 1: I think what's crazy to me is you have a
- 35:53Speaker 1: story about a mom taking care of a special needs
- 35:55Speaker 1: child and she was the killer. And that was the
- 36:00Speaker 1: problem when it's when it's like, no, like when you
- 36:03Speaker 1: watch this show, this show is just like, hey, what?
- 36:06Speaker 1: And here's the thing. Like, again, there's no spoilers here.
- 36:09Speaker 1: You are assuming taking spoilers into your own hands by
- 36:12Speaker 1: listening to us talk about this. I love that this
- 36:14Speaker 1: show has effectively, Linda Cardinelli is just fucking nuts and
- 36:19Speaker 1: wants to kill people and is killing people. And that's it.
- 36:23Speaker 1: That's it. Because in these first two episodes, we go from, oh,
- 36:27Speaker 1: let's feel bad for her to, holy shit, what the
- 36:29Speaker 1: fuck is going on? Like she's a complete, she's a
- 36:31Speaker 1: complete psycho. And you know what?
- 36:32Speaker 2: Good.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Because I did not expect that from this show. I
- 36:36Speaker 1: didn't know what to expect. I didn't even look into
- 36:38Speaker 1: the thing that you were talking about. You kept talking
- 36:40Speaker 1: about like, oh, you know, like there's this, this weird thing.
- 36:43Speaker 1: And I was like, I don't know what it could be,
- 36:45Speaker 1: but I had in my mind, it was going to
- 36:47Speaker 1: be something like what it ended up, what it's ended
- 36:50Speaker 1: up being. And I, like I said, I haven't seen
- 36:51Speaker 1: the back end of the season yet. So maybe they
- 36:53Speaker 1: answer it. Maybe they don't, I don't know. But I
- 36:56Speaker 1: was not, I was not sure what to expect with
- 36:59Speaker 1: this show at all. All I know is all I
- 37:01Speaker 1: knew was Linda Cardinelli is in it. And now that
- 37:03Speaker 1: it's like, oh yeah. So she's, just vindictively killing people
- 37:09Speaker 1: that are fucking with her and acting like assholes, which
- 37:11Speaker 1: is fine, which is very Hannibal, which reminds me again,
- 37:14Speaker 1: like Brian Fuller was originally involved with this. So that
- 37:17Speaker 1: makes sense. And then you have this kind of like
- 37:19Speaker 1: weird tone that reminds me of Coen brothers movies reminds
- 37:26Speaker 1: me of that Fargo TV show reminds me of alien
- 37:29Speaker 1: earth where it's like, there's like these weird, funny or
- 37:32Speaker 1: black darkly comedic moments that don't make sense in other
- 37:38Speaker 1: shows but i get what they're doing here because in
- 37:40Speaker 1: this it makes sense because of who's creating it and
- 37:43Speaker 1: what their intention is but man i i really like
- 37:48Speaker 1: this show but i was not expecting to like it
- 37:51Speaker 1: this much because i did not know what to expect
- 37:54Speaker 1: and i love that we live in the age now
- 37:57Speaker 1: of stuff like this where someone can come into a
- 38:00Speaker 1: show like this, which is based on something else that
- 38:03Speaker 1: is so kind of, I would say like formless, but
- 38:07Speaker 1: I feel like you could do this with Texas Chainsaw
- 38:10Speaker 1: Massacre too. Like they are so kind of free form
- 38:13Speaker 1: in a way, like the story was not really the
- 38:15Speaker 1: important part. Of this or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. You weren't
- 38:20Speaker 1: here for the story. You were here for something else.
- 38:22Speaker 1: And because that was never the case, now they're, like
- 38:24Speaker 1: you said, given so much runway that this is just
- 38:27Speaker 1: kind of going to be hopefully its own thing for
- 38:30Speaker 1: a while. And I'm okay with that. Because if you
- 38:32Speaker 1: want to do this without Jason, it's essentially Hannibal. Because
- 38:39Speaker 1: Hannibal's like, well, we have a Clarice character in there,
- 38:43Speaker 1: sort of. But because we can't use the Clarice character,
- 38:46Speaker 1: we can never do Silence of the Lambs. Which is weird, right?
- 38:50Speaker 1: Because when people think of Hannibal, it's like part and
- 38:52Speaker 1: parcel of Silence of the Lambs. But the thing that's interesting,
- 38:55Speaker 1: and I think this show might be doing it as well,
- 38:57Speaker 1: it's kind of peeling those things apart, but also seemingly
- 39:02Speaker 1: saying like, well, we can do Jason as the killer
- 39:05Speaker 1: as well, which is akin to those other movies we'll
- 39:10Speaker 1: do it our own way because we can do it
- 39:12Speaker 1: without the hockey mask.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Well what what seemed dangerous as soon as i saw
- 39:21Speaker 2: the fact that we were getting jason and we were
- 39:23Speaker 2: getting this version of jason first i was just like
- 39:28Speaker 2: oh this could be entry entering into an area that
- 39:33Speaker 2: we've previously discussed The are we getting young Anakin Skywalker here?
- 39:38Speaker 2: Are we getting the villain where he's like, yippee? And like,
- 39:42Speaker 2: he's just super cute and all shucks and everybody's supposed
- 39:45Speaker 2: to like him. But you're like, how the hell are
- 39:47Speaker 2: we supposed to like him? Because he grows up and
- 39:49Speaker 2: murders people. So we kind of had that in the
- 39:52Speaker 2: very specifically this first episode, like that's that's where I
- 39:55Speaker 2: was like, oh, OK, is this going to be a problem?
- 39:59Speaker 2: And then like by the time, like almost immediately he
- 40:02Speaker 2: gets killed and most of the time we're seeing him
- 40:04Speaker 2: in flashbacks. So it's like. Not really, because I think
- 40:10Speaker 2: there wasn't any of that to the mythology of Jason.
- 40:14Speaker 2: I feel like Jason was just Jason. He's this wordless
- 40:17Speaker 2: dude that just murders people. And again, he's almost supernatural
- 40:20Speaker 2: in his own weird way. So you didn't have any
- 40:23Speaker 2: personality to him. But by giving him so much personality
- 40:28Speaker 2: and making him likable in the beginning... it almost gives
- 40:32Speaker 2: you reason to be on Pamela's side. Like when she
- 40:37Speaker 2: starts to lose it and like be pissed at everybody
- 40:40Speaker 2: for not caring about the fact that this kid's gone,
- 40:43Speaker 2: like you totally are like, well, yeah, I mean, I'd
- 40:46Speaker 2: feel the same way. Like, you know, people weren't taking
- 40:49Speaker 2: care of her kid. And even after he died, nobody
- 40:52Speaker 2: seems to care. Nobody cares that the body never showed up. Nobody's,
- 40:56Speaker 2: you know, taking into account her feelings. She's just she's
- 41:00Speaker 2: dealing with so much grief at this point that when
- 41:02Speaker 2: you see it sort of manifest in this anger like
- 41:05Speaker 2: it does you're like yeah i get it like so
- 41:08Speaker 2: i think it actually like makes it seem more balanced
- 41:13Speaker 2: like if he was just like a horrible little brat
- 41:15Speaker 2: like he'd be like what is she so pissed about
- 41:17Speaker 2: but because they made him like a real person and
- 41:20Speaker 2: like he actually is a good kid that like you
- 41:23Speaker 2: would otherwise totally be on his side. But now that
- 41:26Speaker 2: we're seeing all of his existence, like through flashbacks and
- 41:31Speaker 2: filtered through her processing, all of the things that have
- 41:35Speaker 2: gone wrong since he's died, that like you're, you're getting
- 41:39Speaker 2: this window into why she's like this. And yes, it
- 41:42Speaker 2: goes off the rails pretty quick where she's just like,
- 41:45Speaker 2: or I'll just start killing people now. But I do
- 41:48Speaker 2: think it's all based in that it's all, coming from
- 41:53Speaker 2: just dealing with the grief of losing this kid and
- 41:56Speaker 2: the kid that was her whole life. And now that
- 41:59Speaker 2: she doesn't have that, she's also kind of like, well,
- 42:02Speaker 2: I don't have anything to worry about. Like I don't
- 42:03Speaker 2: have anything to lose. I'm a lunch lady for God's sakes.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Like the only thing I had was my kid that's gone.
- 42:10Speaker 2: So I kind of have freedom to do whatever I
- 42:12Speaker 2: want with my life. And I've decided what I want
- 42:15Speaker 2: to do is kill people that are pissing me off
- 42:18Speaker 2: so when it takes that road i'm like yeah all
- 42:22Speaker 2: right i get that i feel like we're all kind
- 42:23Speaker 2: of one step away from that at this point anyway.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Which is so again like it's so interesting to me
- 42:29Speaker 1: that that is the road they're going with because again
- 42:31Speaker 1: like you've said there is no real direction here inherently
- 42:34Speaker 1: like there's not an inherent direction with friday the 13th
- 42:38Speaker 1: because again most people don't even remember that she was
- 42:41Speaker 1: the killer I mean, again, yeah. Horror fan.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Drew Barrymore, we're talking to you. Yeah, exactly.
- 42:47Speaker 1: I mean, like, I'm not saying like real horror fans,
- 42:49Speaker 1: but like the lay person when they think of Friday
- 42:51Speaker 1: the 13th.
- 42:52Speaker 2: It's Jason. It's always Jason.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. And I think what's so interesting about this
- 42:58Speaker 1: show is, like you said, it's like, okay, so I
- 43:01Speaker 1: have no love for Friday the 13th as a franchise.
- 43:05Speaker 1: So going into this, I don't care if they do
- 43:07Speaker 1: anything with the characters that is not sacrosanct or sacrily
- 43:11Speaker 1: oh my god there's a backstory now like whatever like
- 43:14Speaker 1: cool you want to explain why jason can come back
- 43:16Speaker 1: to life or he has some magical powers or he
- 43:20Speaker 1: you know he's like i don't feel any pain it's
- 43:22Speaker 1: like what the fuck are we doing here show like
- 43:25Speaker 1: what is this again like i don't know what they're
- 43:27Speaker 1: doing and they're kind of just like not playing their
- 43:31Speaker 1: hand in these, in these first two episodes. But what's
- 43:34Speaker 1: interesting is what we do get in these first two
- 43:36Speaker 1: episodes is like you said, a reason as to why
- 43:40Speaker 1: Pamela Voorhees is killing people. At least this version of
- 43:45Speaker 1: her is, which again, if you want to look at
- 43:47Speaker 1: it as, Oh, this is a prequel to the movies. Cool.
- 43:50Speaker 1: But it's, it's more about what is the story they're
- 43:55Speaker 1: telling here? Like this story, Because again, the story of
- 43:59Speaker 1: Friday the 13th, there isn't really much. So this is
- 44:02Speaker 1: just like, we're going to riff on the notes of
- 44:05Speaker 1: Pamela Voorhees. But what it is, is kind of up
- 44:09Speaker 1: to us to determine. Us, the creators of the show.
- 44:13Speaker 1: And like you said, when it was clear to me
- 44:14Speaker 1: the direction that they're kind of taking this, I'm on
- 44:17Speaker 1: board with it. Do whatever. Go to a self-help convention place.
- 44:23Speaker 1: thing and and interact with that person like you i
- 44:26Speaker 1: would love to see what a psycho sociopathic killer would
- 44:31Speaker 1: do to a person like that who she's like you
- 44:33Speaker 1: know don't fuck around in our heads like you don't
- 44:36Speaker 1: know what you're messing with right like i want you
- 44:38Speaker 1: know what like i vibe with that like that's great
- 44:40Speaker 1: or like you know the scene at the beginning or
- 44:42Speaker 1: at the end of the first episode where she's trying
- 44:43Speaker 1: to figure out how to like tape a dead body's
- 44:47Speaker 1: head closed, and then she wraps it in a plastic bag,
- 44:51Speaker 1: and then she tapes it, like, I'm here for this insanity.
- 44:55Speaker 1: Because I, like, again, like, what I have expectation-wise for
- 44:59Speaker 1: Friday the 13th is nothing. So all this is is just, like,
- 45:02Speaker 1: gravy to me, you know what I mean? Like, I'm
- 45:05Speaker 1: just enjoying this show for this weird serial killer getting
- 45:10Speaker 1: her revenge on the people who wronged her while trying
- 45:13Speaker 1: to hide in broad daylight. and maybe, you know, like
- 45:18Speaker 1: continue to do what she's doing with impunity. Like I'm
- 45:20Speaker 1: here for it. Like, cause again, I had no expectations
- 45:23Speaker 1: going into this. I am the best and worst person
- 45:26Speaker 1: because again, like I said, best because I have no expectation,
- 45:29Speaker 1: but worst because I don't really, so many people are like,
- 45:32Speaker 1: Oh man, you know, like this is, you know, the
- 45:33Speaker 1: Holy Bible. And it's like, not really, you know, it's
- 45:36Speaker 1: like Lord of the, like maybe Lord of the Rings
- 45:38Speaker 1: or something like that, where we have, so much like,
- 45:42Speaker 1: why are you doing your own thing when there's so
- 45:45Speaker 1: much that's already there?
- 45:46Speaker 2: There's a lot of texts there.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Right. Friday the 13th doesn't have that. So it's like,
- 45:50Speaker 1: there's not like a million bajillion things to run from.
- 45:53Speaker 1: Like you can reference things, but even your references don't
- 45:57Speaker 1: have to like be one for one, you know, if
- 46:00Speaker 1: they want to do some sort of like sleeping bag
- 46:02Speaker 1: adjacent thing, or if they do some sleeping bag adjacent
- 46:05Speaker 1: thing in this and be like, Oh, that's funny. That's
- 46:07Speaker 1: clever that you're referencing it, but like, it doesn't have
- 46:09Speaker 1: to be like the exact same setup. Hasta la vista, baby. Like, okay,
- 46:13Speaker 1: we get it. Like you said it in Terminator Schwarzenegger.
- 46:16Speaker 1: Like you say it in everything now. It's that it's like,
- 46:19Speaker 1: you can do that without it being like fucking the one-to-one.
- 46:22Speaker 1: I don't know. It's really, it's an interesting way of
- 46:25Speaker 1: doing this. That is so, you know, to speak to
- 46:27Speaker 1: the AVP and Freddie versus Jason of it all. Like
- 46:30Speaker 1: they had to try and explain in those movies how
- 46:32Speaker 1: the fuck those two characters were getting together. And it's like,
- 46:36Speaker 1: why does it even matter? Like, Like it's, it's just
- 46:39Speaker 1: the characters that you want to see together. It's not
- 46:42Speaker 1: the whole idea of the universes together. Like, I just
- 46:45Speaker 1: want to see the characters just do that. And this
- 46:48Speaker 1: is that same thing. Like Pamela Voorhees, larger universe doesn't matter.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Like there's not this like whole thing we have to
- 46:55Speaker 1: hue to. It's like, we're going to have her as
- 46:56Speaker 1: the center point, her and Jason and build everything off
- 47:00Speaker 1: from there.
- 47:01Speaker 2: And you know what?
- 47:01Speaker 1: I'm, I'm here for it.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Genuinely.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Like it's a very exciting show. to be able to watch,
- 47:06Speaker 1: to not have a fucking clue where they're going with
- 47:08Speaker 1: any of this.
- 47:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the thing. There's really only just an end
- 47:12Speaker 2: point for her, I guess.
- 47:15Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 47:16Speaker 2: And even that, they could kind of change the rules.
- 47:18Speaker 2: That might piss people off a little bit.
- 47:20Speaker 1: What is the end point of a show that's doing
- 47:22Speaker 1: its own thing?
- 47:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I was like, and we've had like a few,
- 47:27Speaker 2: because of the other things you've mentioned that it's reminding
- 47:30Speaker 2: me of, one of the ones that it definitely felt
- 47:33Speaker 2: a lot of the, which again, I didn't get around to,
- 47:36Speaker 2: but I heard such good things on Bates Motel. And
- 47:39Speaker 2: that's almost that exact same thing of like, well, here's
- 47:42Speaker 2: a killer. Their whole identity is that from from the
- 47:46Speaker 2: pop culture end of it is like, this is what
- 47:48Speaker 2: this guy does. He just he's a slasher. He's the
- 47:50Speaker 2: original slasher. But then what was he like when he
- 47:53Speaker 2: was younger? And what was his mom like? So it depends.
- 47:57Speaker 2: digs into that a lot but that's also one of
- 48:00Speaker 2: the few things I heard about Bates Motel they also
- 48:03Speaker 2: do their own thing so much so that when they
- 48:05Speaker 2: catch up with the psycho of it all they change
- 48:09Speaker 2: the game and the main things going on in psycho
- 48:12Speaker 2: don't happen in the series and they just do their
- 48:15Speaker 2: own thing and continue the story and and do like
- 48:18Speaker 2: a new, there's a fork in the road at that point.
- 48:21Speaker 2: And their story just takes a different road and starts
- 48:23Speaker 2: doing something entirely different, but still in that same universe,
- 48:27Speaker 2: still with these same characters, but they just picked a
- 48:30Speaker 2: different choice. And this character did something different from before.
- 48:33Speaker 2: And now it's led to a whole new story. So
- 48:35Speaker 2: I'm like, truthfully, if this gets enough of, you know,
- 48:39Speaker 2: response that they like it enough, hell, they could do
- 48:41Speaker 2: that with this. And like, all of a sudden now
- 48:43Speaker 2: Pamela doesn't die in the first movie that, so they
- 48:46Speaker 2: could like, do a whole different thing if they want.
- 48:49Speaker 2: I don't know if that would piss off fans, but
- 48:52Speaker 2: that's the other thing I was thinking. It's also not
- 48:54Speaker 2: that beholden to lore the way that some of the
- 48:57Speaker 2: other franchise stuff is like this one. Again, it was
- 49:02Speaker 2: all just spooky stories in the woods was the whole
- 49:06Speaker 2: basis of that idea. And eventually we got to some
- 49:10Speaker 2: of the specifics of what happens in that first movie.
- 49:12Speaker 2: But Even the Pamela stuff in the first movie is
- 49:16Speaker 2: so just sort of there, like I said, in the background.
- 49:20Speaker 2: So it's not really hardcore retelling of the stuff. It's
- 49:25Speaker 2: expanding of it all. And again, another thing it reminded
- 49:29Speaker 2: me of that we haven't mentioned, I got a very
- 49:32Speaker 2: Dexter vibe because she is so... she's definitely as time
- 49:38Speaker 2: goes on becoming a serial killer, but also like you,
- 49:42Speaker 2: you realize what she's doing is wrong, but you're also
- 49:45Speaker 2: kind of on her side almost the whole time. Like
- 49:48Speaker 2: even when she starts doing stuff, that's not okay anymore.
- 49:52Speaker 2: Like at first it's just sort of self-defense, but then
- 49:55Speaker 2: like later it's like, no, now she's just pissed off.
- 49:57Speaker 2: So I don't know. I got that vibe where it's like, well,
- 50:02Speaker 2: as time goes on, Dexter himself becomes the full on villain.
- 50:07Speaker 2: but like you're still sort of on his side because
- 50:09Speaker 2: this is his show and you're watching it with him
- 50:11Speaker 2: and you're invested in his character and you're seeing it
- 50:14Speaker 2: from his perspective. And even when he's doing things that
- 50:17Speaker 2: are wrong, you're like, but you make up your excuses.
- 50:20Speaker 2: I'm already doing that with Pamela. Like I'm already halfway
- 50:23Speaker 2: in going, well, yeah, this is a little excessive, but
- 50:26Speaker 2: you know, she had to do this because of this.
- 50:27Speaker 2: So like you immediately just are on her side. You
- 50:31Speaker 2: feel bad for her in the scenario she's in and
- 50:33Speaker 2: you kind of already want the best for her. You know,
- 50:36Speaker 2: it's like, we haven't even gotten into the, the building.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Like in this first couple of episodes here, we just
- 50:42Speaker 2: get the hints of like, I think this sheriff's got
- 50:46Speaker 2: a thing for her. And then pretty quickly you're like, Oh,
- 50:49Speaker 2: vice versa as well. So as that starts to develop,
- 50:53Speaker 2: I'm also like, yeah, I kind of want this for her. Like,
- 50:56Speaker 2: I don't, I don't want her to just hack him
- 50:58Speaker 2: up because she's a crazy person. Like I want her
- 51:01Speaker 2: to have a functional life and like, it sucks that
- 51:03Speaker 2: her kid's gone, but like, she doesn't have to throw
- 51:07Speaker 2: everything away and get herself killed in the process because
- 51:10Speaker 2: she's grieving so that she could also choose to have
- 51:14Speaker 2: a functional life again. So it's interesting that they're kind
- 51:17Speaker 2: of playing with that, especially in these first two episodes
- 51:20Speaker 2: of like just sort of easing their way into what
- 51:23Speaker 2: could potentially be a relationship again, which is not what
- 51:27Speaker 2: I expected either, really.
- 51:29Speaker 1: Well, and again, I didn't know what to expect, but
- 51:32Speaker 1: I do now feel like, like you've said, the idea
- 51:37Speaker 1: of they can kind of do whatever. Yep. And that
- 51:42Speaker 1: is the most exciting thing here. I think about that
- 51:47Speaker 1: Exorcist TV show, which I actually really liked. And I
- 51:53Speaker 1: don't know if you saw it, but the first season
- 51:55Speaker 1: is like a... A surprise sequel to the first movie.
- 52:00Speaker 1: You don't realize up until, I want to say maybe
- 52:03Speaker 1: like halfway through the first season, it's like, oh yeah,
- 52:05Speaker 1: this is actually like a sequel to the first movie.
- 52:08Speaker 1: And I'm mentioning it now because it's been so long
- 52:10Speaker 1: and there's been so many fucking sequels and we've seen
- 52:13Speaker 1: now a Mike Flanagan trailer for a Mike Flanagan movie
- 52:16Speaker 1: that's coming out. It's a sequel to... It is a
- 52:20Speaker 1: sequel to something. Maybe, I don't know, possibly even exorcist three.
- 52:23Speaker 2: Um, that's what I've heard. And it sounds, it sounds
- 52:27Speaker 2: kind of interesting actually. Right?
- 52:28Speaker 1: Like, okay, cool. Again, like it feels like this where
- 52:31Speaker 1: it's like, okay, like I have a, I have a
- 52:34Speaker 1: starting point that you recognize or some things that you
- 52:37Speaker 1: are familiar with, but I am not feeling as beholden
- 52:40Speaker 1: as everybody else's felt before. to the quote, mythology, unquote.
- 52:45Speaker 1: You know, when Noah Hawley's Alien Earth came out, it
- 52:47Speaker 1: was like, oh, where is this in the timeline? It's like,
- 52:50Speaker 1: it's Stone fucking timeline. And you know what? There's something
- 52:56Speaker 1: so freeing about that because it's like, well, how, how
- 52:59Speaker 1: does this relate to Ripley? It's like, it doesn't because
- 53:01Speaker 1: there's no universe where this could have happened and people
- 53:03Speaker 1: didn't know about the aliens. So it's very clearly its
- 53:07Speaker 1: own thing, which is good because you know what? Who
- 53:10Speaker 1: gives a fucking shit anymore about where the timelines are? Like,
- 53:14Speaker 1: I feel like this show is a tacit rejection of
- 53:18Speaker 1: so much of what we have seen in the last
- 53:20Speaker 1: 20 years of, of filmmaking and tv shows where it's
- 53:24Speaker 1: like we have to do a thing that's tied to
- 53:26Speaker 1: this thing just like the people expect us to and
- 53:30Speaker 1: it's like nope and friday the 13th is like the
- 53:32Speaker 1: most visible of things like i mean like you said
- 53:35Speaker 1: with psycho or with hannibal like friday the 13th is
- 53:39Speaker 1: like one of the big ones it is i mean
- 53:41Speaker 1: like in terms of money making visibility like i don't
- 53:45Speaker 1: know if there's a bigger franchise you could have done
- 53:47Speaker 1: for horror other than maybe nightmare on elm street like
- 53:50Speaker 1: or Scream, but they've already done a Scream TV show.
- 53:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and Nightmare on Elm Street's so far removed. Again,
- 53:56Speaker 2: it's been so long even since the attempt at a reboot.
- 54:01Speaker 2: I don't know that any of the newer generations have
- 54:04Speaker 2: the reverence for Nightmare on Elm Street that you did
- 54:07Speaker 2: the first time. I definitely did, but I think about
- 54:11Speaker 2: several generations of kids since then that at best they
- 54:14Speaker 2: might have watched them at home. And being like, oh,
- 54:17Speaker 2: all right, that was fine. So like, I don't think
- 54:19Speaker 2: Nightmare carries the power unless it's older fans most of
- 54:23Speaker 2: the time and a handful of like hardcore kids that
- 54:25Speaker 2: are still hanging out at like horror conventions and stuff.
- 54:28Speaker 2: But I feel like regular fans and even regular horror
- 54:31Speaker 2: fans of today probably don't care as much about Freddy
- 54:35Speaker 2: as the fans used to.
- 54:38Speaker 1: No, I mean, I think it's Art the Clown and
- 54:41Speaker 1: Annabelle and all these other things. And, you know, like,
- 54:43Speaker 1: Art the Clown has mythology, but it's his own mythology.
- 54:46Speaker 1: It's not beholden to anything. Like, it's inspired by other stuff, sure.
- 54:50Speaker 1: But it's not beholden to a goddamn thing. I mean,
- 54:53Speaker 1: what's funny is Friday the 13th is, like, the worst
- 54:58Speaker 1: best case example of how do we handle who owns what?
- 55:02Speaker 1: Because that's, I mean, like, the Victor Miller of it all, right?
- 55:05Speaker 1: I mean, this... I own Friday the 13th, the computer
- 55:08Speaker 1: game or the game. And you know what? Like one year,
- 55:12Speaker 1: one year into the game existing, it no longer existed
- 55:15Speaker 1: because the rights for that game were given to the
- 55:18Speaker 1: people and they didn't actually have them. And then they
- 55:20Speaker 1: had to take it down. It's like, Jesus Christ, like
- 55:22Speaker 1: fucking figure this out and stop, stop roping innocent gamers
- 55:26Speaker 1: into this bullshit. You know what I mean? Stop roping
- 55:28Speaker 1: a game company into this bullshit. Cause it was like
- 55:30Speaker 1: a Kickstarter or something. Even I was like, oh my God,
- 55:33Speaker 1: like people gave these people money, but it's like.
- 55:35Speaker 2: It's a whole thing.
- 55:36Speaker 1: Like Friday the 13th is the worst one, but it's
- 55:40Speaker 1: finally been answered. And like, you know what? If, if
- 55:42Speaker 1: they have their own Jason universe stupidity going on to
- 55:47Speaker 1: in tandem to this, I'm much more interested in what
- 55:49Speaker 1: this is doing then. Oh, just more Jason. Like, okay.
- 55:54Speaker 1: I've seen that before. I have, I mean, I've seen
- 55:58Speaker 1: this in other things, but I've never seen this before.
- 56:02Speaker 1: like this. And that is what's most exciting. Like I,
- 56:06Speaker 1: you know, I don't know if we're going to see
- 56:09Speaker 1: a killer Jason in this show and I don't know
- 56:12Speaker 1: if I need to.
- 56:13Speaker 2: That's the thing. I feel like they have that option.
- 56:16Speaker 2: Like as it continues on, if they want to work
- 56:19Speaker 2: him in and he starts doing his own, which we
- 56:23Speaker 2: may get to that later, but like you start to
- 56:25Speaker 2: see things that are like, okay, the Jason of it
- 56:28Speaker 2: all is still involved and, But it's still focusing primarily
- 56:32Speaker 2: on Pamela. So it's like we could work them both
- 56:35Speaker 2: in and have two different murdering plot lines going on
- 56:39Speaker 2: at the same time. We could wrap up her version
- 56:42Speaker 2: and pass the torch and like it could continue on
- 56:45Speaker 2: and do a whole season of just Jason out in
- 56:47Speaker 2: the woods murdering people. I don't know that that's going
- 56:49Speaker 2: to be interesting comparatively, but there's definitely a lot of
- 56:53Speaker 2: different ways they could play it. But I mean, there's already...
- 56:56Speaker 2: Enough of a tease of Jason in the woods that
- 56:59Speaker 2: like we definitely can work him in as part of
- 57:02Speaker 2: the killing aspect of it. But I think what's been
- 57:06Speaker 2: so interesting in the opening of the show is that
- 57:09Speaker 2: that doesn't have to be there. That what we're doing
- 57:13Speaker 2: with the Pamela plotline is already so interesting on its
- 57:17Speaker 2: own that I'm good with her. If we didn't even
- 57:20Speaker 2: get to Jason this early on, if we waited until
- 57:24Speaker 2: episode eight and they were like, oh, look, there's that
- 57:26Speaker 2: kid in the woods. I would be fine with that
- 57:28Speaker 2: because she's done so much in the first two episodes
- 57:31Speaker 2: here that it's really– promising that like there's already so
- 57:36Speaker 2: much for her to do as a character and like
- 57:39Speaker 2: there's so much of her life going on there's a
- 57:42Speaker 2: lot more aspects to her than you would expect in
- 57:46Speaker 2: something that's just like ah we're gonna do a cheesy
- 57:49Speaker 2: backstory about this serial killer and it's like well it
- 57:52Speaker 2: could have just been that but i feel like they
- 57:54Speaker 2: did at least give enough character to her and then
- 57:59Speaker 2: bring in a real actress that can kind of dig
- 58:01Speaker 2: into this and like you feel like you're you're seeing
- 58:04Speaker 2: things that you wouldn't expect to see in a show
- 58:07Speaker 2: like this.
- 58:08Speaker 1: Yeah. I, and you know, you said it best, like
- 58:10Speaker 1: Linda Cardinale is the best part of this show. She's
- 58:16Speaker 1: so good. I mean, I mean the show itself in
- 58:19Speaker 1: terms of like the sensibilities that it has, I love
- 58:22Speaker 1: that the second episode of this show to, to talk
- 58:24Speaker 1: a little bit about the second episode. Now I, I
- 58:26Speaker 1: would think like, I love that it opens with the
- 58:30Speaker 1: beginning of the, or the end of the first movie.
- 58:33Speaker 1: Like it opens with the end of the Friday the 13th.
- 58:38Speaker 1: And it's like the people that are making this show
- 58:40Speaker 1: understand what the people who are watching the show expect
- 58:44Speaker 1: from the show, but not that it's like, I don't
- 58:48Speaker 1: need this to be like, I don't know. I just
- 58:51Speaker 1: don't need you to do Friday the 13th, the movie,
- 58:53Speaker 1: the show.
- 58:55Speaker 2: Well, I feel like they at least are working in
- 58:58Speaker 2: like I feel like that's the sense of humor of
- 59:01Speaker 2: it all is like it is working in like dorky
- 59:04Speaker 2: little jokes just for the fans, because I don't think
- 59:09Speaker 2: I even caught it. the first time but like when
- 59:11Speaker 2: they're doing the stupid announcements did you hear that part
- 59:14Speaker 2: of it when they're like on the speaker and at
- 59:16Speaker 2: the founders day somebody hotter and it's like In 1779,
- 59:21Speaker 2: Lieutenant Hodder McCain. Yeah, I did.
- 59:25Speaker 1: I did catch that because it was on the subtitles.
- 59:27Speaker 1: And I was like, there's only one person whose name
- 59:29Speaker 1: is associated with this, whose name is that.
- 59:32Speaker 2: So there's there's stuff like that. And then I just
- 59:35Speaker 2: saw one today. Like if you're watching in the background,
- 59:38Speaker 2: there's the girl wearing the Mickey Mouse shirt. Which is
- 59:42Speaker 2: in the first movie. Like, so they're working in these
- 59:44Speaker 2: references to the other ones that are like so minor
- 59:47Speaker 2: that like, unless you're a big horror dork, you don't
- 59:50Speaker 2: even pick up on them. But for the hardcore fans,
- 59:54Speaker 2: it's like you've got those little touches, and then when
- 59:57Speaker 2: you get to the gore aspect of it, I'm like, no,
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: it's full-on horror movie there. So it's delivering the horror
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: stuff and the stuff specifically for the horror fans, but
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: it's also shoving all that in the middle of a
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: drama that's going on that could be a very different
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: show for a different audience if that's how they wanted
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: to spin it. But they're still like they've found a
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: way to kind of like straddle that line. And it's
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: like it's doing both at the same time and I
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: think doing a pretty good job of it so far.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: I feel like and again, like, you know, I feel
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: like the choices that they're making are I don't know.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: You know, we talk about like the choices you make
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: are so important, but the choices you don't make are
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: important as well. And the ones that they're not making
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: here are smart, not rushing into like, well, people want,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: you know, it's like that whole fucking Prometheus thing where
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: it's like, well, nobody showed up because they didn't say
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: it was an alien movie. It's like, that's not why
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: they didn't show up. They didn't show up because people
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: just didn't get that movie. Like I just, they didn't
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: get it. Like there was the expectation wasn't there. The
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: audience was, the audience found that movie eventually. I think
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: that movie fucking Prometheus is better than, than Romulus. Covenant
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: is better than Romulus. Romulus is pretty much just alien. Like,
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: it even has Ian Holm in it. Like, prove me wrong.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Like, I really like, again, like to go
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: back to all of this, like Romulus takes place before this.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: And who cares? Just like Prometheus and covenant, like the
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: same thing. It's like, who fucking cares? I just want
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: to know how the story ends. You know what I mean?
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Like just tell an interesting story. And I don't really
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: care where this takes place in anything. As long as
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: the timeline, as long as the story is important, the
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: timeline is unimportant. And with this show, like, It's clear
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: to me that the people that are making the show,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: I think, understand that as well. It's less about like, oh, well,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: at this point in this, this had happened. It's like, no,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: we're going to do whatever. You know, at the beginning
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: of the second episode, all of a sudden we have
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: the end of the first movie. Like shot for shot,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: like even has a little thing in the water and
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: then he jumps out of the water. Like all of
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: that is coming from the end of the first movie.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: They're just doing stylistically fun things. Like, which is much
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: more interesting than like, well, you got to make sure
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: this ties into this. Like that's so just boring. And
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: like tedious is the word I would use. And frankly,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: like uninteresting, like who cares that much? It's like, you know,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: the Han Solo movie, like how'd you get that scar
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: on your chin? Oh, it's solo.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: Cause you're by yourself. Let me tell you about it.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Like two hours. Here we go. Who cares?
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: Like, The way of telling prequel stories has changed so
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: much in the last 20 years, and I'm so glad.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: Well, I think that's something that's different about this too,
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: and different from what I might have expected, but I
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: think is also what's making it move along as well
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: as it does, and something very different from your, specifically
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: your old school slashers. Because usually you had... a bunch
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: of dumb kids and they were like obnoxious and you
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: just wanted them to die. Whereas as good as, as
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: Linda is like, we've also introduced several other characters specifically,
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: like grace is like a really interesting character. Like even
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: from the very beginning of that first episode, I'm like,
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: Oh look, Jason's got a friend. Like that's the, you wouldn't.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Like a genuine child friend, which again, not part of
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: anything because there's so little of any of this. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: So like introducing, yeah, introducing her as being this like
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: so pure that she sees past everything else. Like she
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: doesn't judge him for anything except who he is and
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: he's a good kid. And like, that's, that's a nice
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: little bond that we get in the very beginning. And
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: then those flashbacks. So we're, we're building a lot with her.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: So that, uh, that Gwendolyn girl that's her, I, I
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: was like, has she been another thing? Cause she's really
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: good at this. I was surprised for as young as
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: she is. Like the performance is really good. But then
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: also you add in the Claudette of it all, who
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: is a little closer to your girls. Like she's who would,
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: you know, in a lot of the other words, be
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: the final girl. And I guess kind of in this series,
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: she is because we sort of know where things are
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: going for Claudette in the grand picture again, unless they
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: totally change things. But you're also not making her like
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: the boyfriend's just an idiot. Like the boyfriend's like every
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: dumb character in all of the slasher movies, right? But
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: there's a little more to Claudette. And I'm already like, well,
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: I kind of want to see what's going on here.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: And we're investing a little more time in this character
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: than you normally would with any group of dumb teenagers
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: in the slashers. So I think adding these characters in
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: along the way, in addition to the sheriff being really
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: interesting too, I think immersing you in this little town
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: and then adding in all these characters that actually do
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: have interesting side stories and what little backstory we get
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: of them along the way is like kind of fascinating.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: So I, to me, that's kind of like taking it
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: up a couple of notches from even your normal standard
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: streaming show.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: No, I completely agree. You know, you, you, you put
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: it pretty aptly. Like there's, there's a lot of threads
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: that the film, the, the films don't establish because the
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: films are interested in something else that the show is
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: so much more interested in, which is, Giving us characters
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: to care about. And there was, you know, it's funny,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: there was like so little of that in the original movies.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: I mean, again, like to the point where, you know,
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Siskel and Ebert and so many other people were derivative
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: of those movies because, and I'm not saying... unjustifiably, I
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: get it, but you know, like, oh, they're just killing people.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: There can't be any art to this. Like, oh my God, fine.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: Like you sound as kind of fuddy, you sound as
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: fuddy-duddy as you're trying to avoid, you know? And that's
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: the thing, like this show, I think is much more
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: interested in, like you said, telling an interesting story, having
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: these characters, having interesting characters. Look, I have zero awareness
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: as to where the Claudette character goes, right? Because, again,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: I've seen the first movie one time. And I'm not
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: going to go watch the first movie until I'm done
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: watching the first eight.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: Episodes of the show. And if they even go down
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: that road, like we said, they can change things up
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: as much as they want in this kind of scenario.
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: So we really don't know for sure where it's going.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: Because we know that Pamela Voorhees didn't feed people to
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: bears in the movie. Yeah. i like that part oh
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: yeah her feet my girlfriend and i were like what
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: the fuck is oh bears got.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: It bears well and then i was like i've seen
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: a lot of people try to cover up the fact
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: that oops i killed somebody before but like i don't
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: think i've seen that version of it i was like
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: this far in to come up with a new interesting
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: way to get rid of your body in a way
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: that sort of seems like maybe it was legit it's
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: like ah just smear some tuna on and put some
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: money in their hair and it's like yeah it's fine
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: bears will eat them it's okay and within the story
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: she's right i don't know if it works for real
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: we'll have to try it one of these days but
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: right within the story it worked and i was like
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: that's a cool and interesting way to deal with this
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: problem that well now i've got two dead bodies what
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: do i do with them and that that was a
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: way to deal with it.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: And I, I was going to ask you, because again,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: having only watched the first episode, the first four episodes,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: how do you feel about, again, to go to the,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: what they're doing differently of it all? How do you
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: feel about them being like, there's a thing here? Like
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: there's more going on here. I don't know what it is.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: And maybe they answer it in the back half of
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: the season. They probably answer it to some respect and
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: probably open up more doors, but. What is your take
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: on kind of this? Because this feels a little like
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: stranger thingsy to me.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: That's where I feel like it is going. I think
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: if they just left it at that, that's also the
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: way all horror movies in the woods are, you know,
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: it's just like, Oh, there's something in these woods. And
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: the guy at the gas station is going to tell you,
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: you stay out of those woods because there's dark things
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: there and you'll end up dead. And like, that's, I
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: think there's an essence of that that's in all of
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: these movies in the woods. You know, it's like, there's
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: always something disturbing in the woods and, I mean, we
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: built the entirety of the Evil Deads. It's just like,
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: go out in the woods and something horrible is going
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: to take you over and swoop through the woods and
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: murder all your friends. So like, again, like anything in
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: the woods has its own creepy vibe to it. And
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: I think it could have just been that. But they
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: are adding this other, that thing I said that was
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: sort of piquing my interest from the beginning there, where
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: they're just like, oh, there's something else going on. And
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: we keep getting these company names. So the fact that
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: we're getting... the business card with a name on it,
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: and then we keep flashing on that door in the,
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: in the garage. what I'm assuming is some sort of
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: government building. So like now it is, now it's like,
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: is this a government experiment that's gone horribly wrong? And
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: now that's why she had to run away from them.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: So there's definitely like that backstory there that like, I
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: feel like the more we dig into that, the more
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: stranger things it's probably going to get. So I don't
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: know that I have to have that. If it's done right,
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: it could be interesting. If it's done badly, it could
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: just be like, oh, this whole thing's silly.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: Right now, we're still kind of at that point where
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: we don't really know. But they're definitely hinting at something
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: that seems like it's heading more towards a... It's some
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: bigger thing going on that somebody is orchestrating. It's not
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: just spooky spirits in the woods, which also could just
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: be all it is. But the way that they're building
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: this up and the specifics that they're giving us make
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: me think it's somebody is behind it all and somebody is...
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: done some sort of weird experiments to Jason. And that's
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: why he looked like that. And that's also probably why
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: he has some sort of weird powers that kept him
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: from dying and keep him from dying as time goes on.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: So much so that by space, they're trying to clone
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: him because he's indestructible. So to jump ahead to silly. So,
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, I feel like that's to some extent
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: where they're going. It's it's kind of the how far
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: into that are they going to go? How specific are
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: they going to answer that question in these eight episodes
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: is where we're trying to find out.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: So how much of it have you watched the first
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: just the first four?
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: I just yeah, I just went halfway in. So I
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: don't know where we're going on this season either.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: OK, I didn't want to have it like. kind of
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: spoil my ability to talk about the show.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: That's kind of why I stopped. Okay.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: Yeah. We, we, okay. You know, we're, we're professionals at
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: this folks where we're figuring this out on air, but we,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: we think, and we think in group group think parallel thought,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: I just didn't want to ruin it for myself because
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: I feel like if I knew where this was going,
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: I would be unable to talk about it right now.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: Even though it dropped completely immediately like this, you could
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: watch this in eight fucking hours just sitting there like
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: you could. People did, I'm sure. But I, I cannot
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: do that. The most I can do, even with this,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: like my girlfriend and I watched the first episode two
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: episodes and then we watched two more like i could
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: not sit and watch four episodes of this in one
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: sitting it's four hours that's a lot of.
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: Time that's a lot of shows again that's why i
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: am so far behind on shows even stuff i want
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: to see a lot of times it's just so much
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: at once that i just i put it off the
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: only way you.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: Can watch like two hours of a show in a
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: sitting like a.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: Serious show.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Like normally I'm lucky if I get through more than
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: one and that's, that's usually if, if I'm keeping up
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: with a show as they're coming out, that's my best bet.
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: Like if I know there's one that I like and
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: I'm like, Oh, Wednesdays, they dropped the new episode and
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: I watch it that Wednesday, I will keep on top
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: of it as it goes. it's the ones that drop
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: all eight at one time. I'm not saying anything about
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: this show, but I'm just like, I think that's a
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: weird choice. I feel like.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: You're, you're of the mindset that the, the, the, the
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: kind of staggered release schedule benefits you because you don't have,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: it's like the, it's like the, this costs a dollar.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: It is like, this is less than a cup of
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: coffee a day type thing. You're, you're not invest. I
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: get it. Like it makes sense. It's old school. I mean,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: it's like, that's how I.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: Watched TV my entire life. Like there was no other option.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: you're not the only one it was only the box
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: set era that changed everything because that you had no
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: option for the rest of your life you'd catch things
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: on reruns they were out of order like none of
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: it even made sense watching it back in the old
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: days and it was the box set was the thing
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: that turned the tide for geeks out there that made
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: it then like in a sitting kind of thing we're
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: gonna marathon through you know 12 episodes of this this
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: weekend we're having a party or whatever dumb thing people
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: started doing and And then once box sets started going
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: to rental, then it was like, oh, I can go
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: watch a whole season of this show that everybody's talking about.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: We normalized it. It really got normalized. That changed it
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: to the point, yeah, that by the time streaming came along,
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: that's how everybody did it. And I was like, okay,
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: but I got other stuff to do, man. I can't
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: just sit there for 16 hours. Binge, you can't.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not binge watching. I'm tired of sitting there.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: I'm not a binge-watching guy either. I'm really not. I
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: like having stuff on in the background when I'm doing
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: something else. My girlfriend and I play a lot of
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: board games or we'll be doing stuff in the living
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: room at my house. I'll be playing video games and
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: she'll be doing something else and we'll have something on
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: my iPad. But I'm not just sitting and watching this. Like,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: holy shit. Like, I could not do that. I could
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: not sit and just watch a show for eight hours
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: and do nothing else. That feels like, and I get, like,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: I have lamented the staggered release schedule of things. Like,
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: why not just release the damn thing all at once?
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: But I understand where you're coming from. Like, it makes
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: sense to me. Because, like, again, the way you engaged
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: with TV before was, I have an hour a week
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: I can watch it. And it's an hour a week
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: that I can engage with it. And that's it. I
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: get it.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: It's bite size. It's manageable. You know, it's like it's
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: something you can do. But I know, again, I'm not
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: I'm not blind to it. Like I one of the
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: people on my show, like they hate when they do
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: stuff like that. And to the point, we'll wait until
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: an entire season is over. And just not listen to
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: everybody running their mouth on the internet and just ignore everybody.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: And then when it's done, we'll sit down and watch
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: it all because they hate the idea of not being
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: able to go to the next episode, not being able
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: to finish it if they want to finish it. And
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: I'm like, I get it.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: I am that way. I don't have that, but I
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: get it. I am that way with stuff. Like, I
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: won't watch something until the show's over for the most part.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Unless someone else wants to talk about it, like Mike
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: and I doing Rings of Power or you and I
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: doing this, like... I don't really, for the most part,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: watch shows until they're over because I just want to
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: be able to watch, like you said, I just want
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: to be able to have the option to watch the
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: whole show and not have to wait. Because I know
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: that there's not any consistency with fucking waiting a la
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: Stranger Things.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: I like the, again, it's so old school network TV,
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: but I also like that having a week of of
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: processing it yourself. So like you, there is no option
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: to watch the next one. You gotta wait till next
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: week when the new one comes out, but it also
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: gives you a week to sort of mull over it
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: all and be like, well, wait, so what was going on?
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: So like you're, you're being extra geeky for a week
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: long in between anyway, but even more so once the
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: fan bases got out there and now it gives like
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: a week of time in between each episode. for all
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: the geeks to get together, you know, mostly on the internet,
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: but occasionally even people you run into in the real
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: world and you'll sit there and like, you'll, you'll go
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: down a rabbit hole. That's like, well, what about this?
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: Do you think this is going to happen? Like, so again,
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: being a geek, like it just feeds that so much,
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: having time to spread it out and having time to
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: dig into the theories and the crazy like thoughts that
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: you have when you're waiting for the next thing to happen.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: that you don't get those when you binge it. If
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: you sit down for eight hours straight, you don't get
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: to wonder what's going to happen on episode six because
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: you already know. You sat and watched it all. So
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: it kind of kills that aspect that is kind of
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: one of my favorite parts of being involved in a
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: series is sort of the pacing it out and the
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: figuring out what's going on as you go along versus
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: just having it all thrown at you at once.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: You're advocating for a.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: Way of enjoying tv that is an old school way
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: of doing it but i don't think it definitely is
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: i don't think it's a bad thing i think it's
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: just i think in the in the day and age
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: of people engaging with things transactionally they want to be
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: able to watch everything all at once and i'm even
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: i'm guilty of that i'm acknowledging it but at the
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: same time it makes it easier for me who someone
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: who does something like that i do which is talking
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: about recent stuff but also being able to enjoy the
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: things that I want to enjoy, because when I do
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: have time, I do want to just watch as much
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: as I can. And I tend to have something on
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: at all times. Well, yeah, this is, brother, this is
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: the fucking water cooler, dog. I don't know what you
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: view this as, but this is, you know, this is
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: the water cooler with the parasocial relationship, you know, at
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: the end of the day.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: And that's, again, that's what led me to the internet world.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: It's like, I barely had that in the real world
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: growing up. I was just watching it and wanting to
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: have these conversations. And now that I can, I'm just like, finally,
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: the internet is here and dorks can get together and
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: talk and piss each other off probably because that's what
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: people do on the internet. But eventually you'll find other
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: people that have like similar thoughts. And there's a couple
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: of shows that I do that with now. And I'm like,
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: I enjoy that aspect of it. And the fan base
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: that it builds is like, I think that's why you
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: get weird fan bases around shows even more than movies
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: a lot of times that are so hardcore is because
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: it creates that and it also gives you a ton
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: more material to dig into. But it also– that longer
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: period of immersing yourself into it builds these fandoms and
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: this relationship with other people as you converse about it
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: all out there. that like if it's a movie you
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: know you watch it and that weekend you talk about
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: the last movie you saw and that's cool but then
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: like a lot of people move on versus like those
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: those fan bases for shows that are around for years
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: and years i mean you look at something like supernatural
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: or like those people are crazy like the the hardcore
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: fan base that came from that because It was a
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: weekly show and it had things that went on for
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: years at a time. There were story arcs that went
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: on forever. And like it allowed people to just dig
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: into that week in and week out and find each
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: other at conventions and on the Internet. And like it
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: just built this crazy fan base that like, I don't know,
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: I still respond to that even for shows that I'm
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: not into. I get it. I see other people being
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: geeks about it. And I'm like, all right, I see
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: what you're doing there. I respect you and your geekdom.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: It does take away from the kind of communal aspect
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: of things. But I also think that the communal aspect
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: of things is now just Twitter anyways. You know, it's just,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: it's gone into the kind of internet sphere of things. And,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: you know, there are people who do have conversations on
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: Reddit in a civil fashion, but there are people that
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: just sit and fucking scream at each other about, oh,
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: traffic thunder or blazing saddles.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: That's most of it. Yeah.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: Yeah. Cancel it, whatever. Like, and you know, the loudest
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: assholes are the loudest assholes. You know, the people that
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: are like me and you, I'm not saying we're quiet.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: I mean, we sit and talk about movies on the
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: internet and post it on the internet. So I'm not
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: going to pretend like we don't, but I just am
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: so sick of fandom culture of a certain kind. Because
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: for me, fandom culture is why we've gotten to the
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: point where Star Wars doesn't matter anymore and Star Trek
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: doesn't matter anymore and nothing matters anymore. And I really, like,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: I have things that I love but I don't even
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: care about Like, the mythology, like, you know, there's a
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: new Mummy film coming out next year, right? Mummy 4,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: Book of the Dead is the title of the film, apparently.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: I could care less if they go and retcon the
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: shit out of everything. Who fucking cares? Like, it's not
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: the fucking gospel by any stretch of the imagination.
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: It's a movie.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: And the mythology of it is just, like, an interesting
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: part that the people who are making the movie thought
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: a little further through than they necessarily felt like they
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: had to. That's kind of what it boils down to,
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: because for the most part, whatever's on the screen needs
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: to be entertaining. The mythology and all the other things
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: are things that they can choose to involve themselves in,
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: but don't necessarily have to. And with this show, they've
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: kind of like, they're treading that, that line, right? It's
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: like the center line of, well, okay, we have mythology
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: that we can work with and is, is good enough.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: kind of fertile ground but it hasn't been tainted by
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: being over trod over and over again because again it
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: it has existed without mythology really for so long that
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: because there's not mythology that they have to hew to
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: they can kind of do whatever the fuck they want
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: which is exciting which is why we have pamela vorhees
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: at a self-help convention talking to a clearly also psychotic
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: self-help guy who by the end of it gets, I
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: don't know what the fuck does this guy hit him with?
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: He hits him with, I don't know, but he takes
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: off half of his face in the process.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: Which is fucking insane. Because again, like the violence in
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: this show is so amped up that anytime someone is
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: getting hit with things or punched or kicked, it's like,
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: Oh my God, like they're like half dead. Um, By
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: the time this is done. And it's again, like I'm
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: here for it. Like, I like that the show has
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: a hyper stylized level of violence. That's not trying to
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: be like super serious. Like it lives within this weird.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: And I'm not going to say like pastiche of a 24,
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: but like, you know what I mean? Like it is.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: A24-ified Friday the 13th, which the expectation is met, and
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: I think that they knew what they were doing when
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: they started this show. I think they knew what people
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: were going to expect from it, and I think it's
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: nailing it.
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: I think they just know this is the world they've created.
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: These characters, as much as they're doing more with them,
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: and they're fleshing out a lot more of all of
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: these different characters, but when it comes time... To have
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: even a basic thing like some guy comes and hits
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: you upside the head, then it shifts into horror mode
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: and it's like, oh no, but we're still Friday the 13th.
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: Like we still exist in the same universe where all
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: these other horrible things happen. So when it's time for violence...
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: It's time for violence. And so that's what they delivered. Like,
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: I feel like that's the again, the little like nod
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: to the horror geeks. It is like, no, no, you're here.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: You're on the right show. Don't worry. Like we're we're
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: we're diving into character a little more than you're used to, maybe.
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: But give it a minute and something bloody is going
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: to happen. So don't worry about it.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: And yeah, I, you know, I, I believe it's a,
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: it looks like a baseball bat or a two by four.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: I don't know what he hits him with, but he
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: fucks this guy up and it's gross.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: It's gross.
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: It's like genuinely gnarly. His like teeth are fucked up
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: and he looks, you know what? And what's funny is
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: he looks like Jason. Well, there you go.
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: I don't know. Like he looks, I don't know. Like, again,
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: like so much of this show, I feel like for
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: me is just like, we know why you're here. And
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: if you're really here and you're a fan of the movies,
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: we can kind of riff in fun and interesting ways. Look,
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: Linda Cardinelli is doing her own thing. I, you know, again, I,
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: I don't really know what the original movies Pamela Voorhees
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: was like, because I haven't seen it recently. Like I said,
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: I'm going to watch it when we're done with this series.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: So if she's just like Linda Cardinelli, cool. If Linda
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Cardinelli is doing her own thing, great. I'm here for
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: this again. What I'm assuming is a sociopath of some kind.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: Like what is your read on her character? Well, that's,
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: I mean, that's the thing.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: We got right up to what is maybe the most
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: interesting part of that episode is like, yeah, that guy
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: comes up and hits him with whatever he hits him with.
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: seconds before she was about to bash his head in
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: with a bowling ball and in public mind you like
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: it's not like she was taking him out in the
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: woods to go murder him she was going to walk
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: up in front of a group of people and smash
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: him in the face with a bowling ball i'm assuming
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: so like she is definitely justifiably so question.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: Mark I mean, that guy is an asshole. So like,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: but I mean, like he confronted her in front. I mean,
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: like she gets embarrassed by him in front of a
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: group of people. It's the Hannibal of it all. Like,
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: and again, like to go back to the Hannibal TV show,
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: which speaks to something that the movies never really get to,
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: which is like Hannibal hates rude people.
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: That's like his thing.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: He's like, I hate rude people. He's like, you know,
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: I think they talk about it in one of I
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: don't remember. Is it one of the movies? I know
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: it's the show where they're like this, this guy who's
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: playing his clarinet is playing it out of tune in
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: the orchestra. And therefore Hannibal, who has a great sense
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: of hearing is annoyed by it. And so he kills
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: him like, like just because of that. And it's like, okay,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: like Pamela Voorhees seems like that. It's like, you know what? Like,
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: I'm not sure she's killed anyone in this show yet
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: that I'm not like, yeah. Kind of had it coming.
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: That's what I said. It's the Dexter of it all.
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it is.
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: They suck, so who cares? I like him better than them,
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: so go ahead and murder him, Dexter. I don't care.
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: And for me, you know, and I think this cuts to,
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: you know, to go back to the kind of a
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: conversation we were having before we started recording, the marvel
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: of it all. I don't need to see like, Oh,
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: her secret identity gets exposed. Like I don't need her
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: to get caught. I don't give a shit. Like I,
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: if someone gets too close, I want her to kill
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: him and just move on. Like I'm, I'm past the
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: Peter Parker gets revealed as Spider-Man story arc that apparently
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: we were all obsessed with in the first or second
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: versions of these movies that were coming out. Like, batman
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: spider-man like they all had major plot lines in those
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: movies about him keeping his secret identity they sat on
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: those for so long that it's like it became a
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: joke and now i'm as same with pamela vorhees or
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: the dexter of it all like dexter has since come
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: back as a tv show and everybody knows that he
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: was the bay harper butcher Well, he just keeps killing
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: them all. Right. It's like, you know what?
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: They all find out each season. And then that season
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: he usually takes out everybody he knows and he moves
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: on to the next season and finds new people to
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: figure it out. And then he has to kill them too.
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: Because them finding out is fucking unimportant at this point.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: And that's my point with like this show, I think
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: is coming from such an interesting place where it's like,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: I don't, I don't understand what Pamela Voorhees was fucking
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: doing with that bowling ball. And we never get to
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: see what it is, but she was going to hit
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: that guy in broad daylight. That was such a weird
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: character beat. What was her plan? Like, obviously she didn't
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: have a full plan, but like, okay, so you go
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: over there, you bash that guy in the face with
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: a bowling ball notion of a plan. That's what we go.
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: And it's like, well, do you just stop at that
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: point and be like, ha, you learned your lesson. Did
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: you just sort of put them in your place and
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: go back to your car and drive home? or what
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: like do you wait around to get arrested like what
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: where does that go if she follows through without that
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: guy like beating her to the punch pun intended i
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: suppose but so i don't know like that was one
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: of the more interesting things in that whole run but
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: definitely that episode of just like Where was this going
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: and what was she going to do after that? Because normally, again,
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: like with the guys earlier, it's like, well, then, okay,
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: now you've got bodies, but then the logical part of
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: your brain kicks in You're like, okay, now how do
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: I cover this up? How do I get rid of
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: the bodies? How do I continue on with my life
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: and not go down for this? You can't do that
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: when you're standing in front of a whole group of
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: people and you just murder this guy. So, yeah. Was
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: she going to stop herself? Was she going to be
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: able to get everyone else to rally around her? Be like, yeah,
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: this guy was an asshole. We taught him a lesson. Like,
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: I don't I don't know. But that was a really
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: interesting moment.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: Well, and like you said, it's because we don't see
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: where it goes. We don't know. And again, maybe they
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: probably address it in the back half of the season.
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: I'm assuming something. I mean, it keeps going clearly like.
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: what we kind of have at the end of this
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: episode is again, like it's an interesting place to leave
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: all of this. It's, you know, we all of a
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: sudden realize, oh yeah, by the way, we are going
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: to clearly have some kind of coming to the head
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: of her and the cop because the cop finds the
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: scissors and we know whose scissors those are. Those are
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: her scissors in the guy's leg. The guy from the lab,
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: apparently from Hawkins lab, uh, I mean, again, I don't
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: know what else you fucking call them. Like we've seen
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: this before. It's funny that like, like there's a riff
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: within a riff on a thing that we've like, again,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: like if you were of a watcher of TV in
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: the last 10 years, how could you not have seen
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: stranger things?
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: I mean, at this point, I feel like everybody, I
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: don't know if they all finished it, but they certainly
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: all started it at one point.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: Right. But you know, right. You know what I mean? Like,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: that's my point. Like it's literally at this point, if
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: you've seen that first season, they're riffing on that first
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: season here. Yeah. Like even a little bit. And I, again,
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: like I'm, I'm so glad that Friday the 13th, a
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: movie about a mother whose child dies because of negligence
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: is being played this time is like, fuck these people.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: She's justified in her killing. Like, yeah.
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: And you know what?
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: And we haven't really talked about, we talked about a
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: little bit. Jason is adorable.
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, he's a likable kid.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: He's a sympathetic character. And you're like, you know what?
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: If he's killing people, it, uh, it kind of feels
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: like he has a reason to be doing it. It's
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: not senseless killing this time. It's justified. And you know what?
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: You don't have to, again, you don't have to have
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: Jason killing eight people for it to be entertaining. You
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: can have them kill four people or 10 by the
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: end of the run of the first season and And
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: each one is interesting and exciting. It doesn't have to
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: be this like fucking hour and a half, 12 person bloodbath.
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: Like that's not required anymore. Like you, you can do
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: more than that. I mean, Jesus Christ, I, you know,
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: you've never seen Terrifier, but to speak to the Terrifier
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: two of it all, there is a disembowelment scene in
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: that film that goes on for five minutes. If that's
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: what you need to see in your life, go watch
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: it there. Like these are using violence and gore in
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: a way that is like, it serves the narrative. And
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: it like, it amplifies and it's like, holy shit. Like,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: you know, there's a scene in, when we talk about our,
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: in the next two kind of tranches of episodes, the
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: episode three and four, there's some violence in there that
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: I'm like, good Lord in heaven show. This is wild.
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: I've not seen this in like shows don't go this far,
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: but it serves the narrative. Like, it serves the plot.
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: It shows, like, what a complete psychopath Pamela Voorhees is.
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: But again, justified. Like, I'm not sure she's a psychopath.
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: She's just, like, she's just a pissed off mom.
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: And you side with her. You see not just the
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: negligence part of it, but, like, the way everybody treats
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: her and the way that, I mean, she... She definitely
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: is a little off the deep end at the beginning,
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: but almost like the crazier she is, the more rational
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: she seems like she's not just like standing on the
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: dot crying anymore. Like by the time she like exercises
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: those demons, so to speak, by murdering those first two guys,
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: she like starts to feel better. And you see like
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: that's when she becomes a little more normal. And that's
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: when you also see she starts to toy with the
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: idea of having a relationship again. She starts like deciding like,
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: can I, can I move on with my life? And
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: can I find this, you know, self-help version and realize
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: this guy's an idiot. He doesn't know what he's talking about,
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: but maybe I know a way to take care of this.
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: And maybe I know a way to get better. And
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: maybe it comes with murdering people. It seems to for her,
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: but she seems way more functional and together the further
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: she gets into this level of craziness.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: Well, and I think it's interesting, you know, we, we
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: haven't really talked about the setting of the show, but
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: the show is set in the seventies, which is like
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: the height of paranoia filmmaking. And like, this is like
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: leaning into it. Yeah. This is leaning into it. Like
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: there's like some weird, like, again, we haven't talked about
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: the Argonaut of it all, but there is a Argonaut
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: door that again, stranger things, adjacent stranger things, immediate, like,
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: That's the paranoia conspiracy theory. There's more going on here
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: of it all. And again, it works. Cause this is
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: a seventies thing. Like I'm here for it. The original
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: movie was set in what? 54 that this part of
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: it was set in 54. The Jason dies of it
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: all like this. They've, they've really sped up the timeline. Right.
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: Because like in the original movie, she's an old woman
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: and Jason died when she was younger here. It's, she's
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: younger and Jason died and we're seeing like immediately all
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: of like the retribution that we would have seen before
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: coming to pass now. And it's immediate. Like, we don't
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: have to wait for Mrs. Voorhees to get old.
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it works better, too, because you would be. Well,
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: not just because, yes, we want to see young ish
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: Linda versus the old lady in the movie. No offense
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: to her. But like that, aside from that, it also
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: like logically like you would be dealing with that that,
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: you know, year after that it happens, not like. 20
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: years down the line when you're like, just now, you
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: know what? I'm upset about my son dying. So it
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: makes a lot more sense as just like a story
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: arc to be like, yeah, she's immediately, you know, in
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: shock and spends, you know, eight or nine months standing
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: on the dock, like still waiting for him to come
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: up out of the water. And then after that, when
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: she's sort of, you know, they first think they find
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: a body is like when she thinks she has to
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: deal with the And that's when everything starts to kind
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: of go crazy and she starts killing people, coincidentally. But
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: like I said, not so coincidentally. I feel like that's
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: also part of it. It's a cathartic thing. She gets
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: better the more she's killing people.
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: And I don't know. I am so engaged with that narrative,
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: with that idea, with what the show is doing. Because
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: it's not... I haven't seen this before. It is shades
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: of other things, but I actually think like this makes
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: Dexter look really like one dimensional. This is how you
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: do a show where it's like you have a killer.
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: who is hiding in plain sight and doing all sorts
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: of nasty wild shit. But you know what? It's all
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: seemingly justified because all these people are, you know, again,
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: like we're going to talk about in the next episode,
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: like this child is being abused by her mother. Possibly
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: this guy is being a dick towards her. Like in
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: the first episode, she's being threatened physically. So like it's,
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: you know, justified in terms of like self-defense and, Second episode,
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: like you said, I don't know what the fuck she
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: was going to do. I don't think she would have
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: killed him, but she probably would have done as much
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: as the other guy did.
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: It would have looked as bad, yeah. His face would
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: have been smashed in.
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: Whacked him one good, but I don't think, I guess
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: I don't think that doing the story the way that
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: we've seen before has a lot of legs the way
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: that this does. And this is a much more difficult
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: way of doing things. It's a much more complicated narrative
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: that they're telling. But I think it works better. I
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: think it yields a more interesting story. And, you know,
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: like you said, we have this character of Grace who
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: is seemingly like dealing with sexual frustration and issues of attraction.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: And I'm not sure what yet. But again, like it
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: seems like a really weird thought experiment on the sexual
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: issues of Grace. the movies because again like that's the
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: whole you know that's where the have sex and die
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: of the horror franchise of horror tropes come from is
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: friday the 13th yeah so i mean we're seeing they're
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: kind of musing on it really it's interesting claudette is
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: already there like she is the teenager but we're also
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: watching her like try to slow down the boyfriend as
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: they go on so it's like you're you're seeing somebody
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: who's already at.
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: That point and how they're dealing with it And you
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: see Grace is just sort of coming into that point
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: of like, she's the blossoming young girl that doesn't know
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: what the hell to do because nobody knows what the
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: hell to do when they hit teenage-dom. So like, she
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: doesn't even fully understand what's going on with her yet,
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: but it's starting to sink in that there's something going on.
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: And like, you know, so by the time we move
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: ahead and start getting into the hippies of it all,
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: that's also very 70s coded that what better way to
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: Have your sectional awakening with a bunch of hippies.
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: Well, and that's, you know, again, like it's it's weird
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: that it's weird that the show's tackling it, but not really.
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: It's just weird because like it seems so. well thought
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: out in a way that I don't really think of
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: when I think of Friday the 13th. You know, I
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: didn't talk about my exposure to Friday the 13th in
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: the movies, really. Like I outside of the first one,
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: I've seen. Which is the one with Corey Feldman where
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: he fights Jason? Is that seven or eight?
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: See, this is why you got to collect them all.
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: Once you get them all, you can go, ah, and
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: then this one and this one. So when you get
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: to four and Corey Feldman becomes the Jason of it all,
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: he has to make it look like Jason to, I guess,
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: confuse Jason and then try to kill Jason. But then
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: he sort of becomes Jason, but then not really.
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: Kind of like Whatchamajig from Halloween 2?
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Or Halloween 1, I guess. What was that, 5,
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: the one that she's in? If you haven't seen the
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: rest of them, then they sort of loop back around
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: and undo that immediately, too, just like they do in
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: Halloween 4. So they come up with that teaser ending,
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: and then the next time around you see him, they're like, oh, no,
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: we were just kidding. Not really. He's still fighting Jason.
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: This is how you do a retelling of the prequel
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: story of a character, right? Halloween, Rob Zombie.
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: I did want to bring up the fact it is
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: interesting that we're sort of inadvertently ended up on this
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: when it's very similar beats overall to what we just
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: discussed on your show a couple of weeks back when
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: we did the Halloween one and two of it all
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: with Rob Zombie's influence. And yeah, I mean, that's kind
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: of that same idea of like, here's somebody who grows
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: up to be a killer. Why did they end up
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: like that? And like, the thing is, I don't know
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: that anybody was asking that about Michael. Now, the thing is,
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: nobody was asking about Jason either. But Jason gives you
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: so much freedom that like, I kind of like that
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: all we had was the story about the mom, really.
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: And that was so minimal in the first movie that like,
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: this just gives you free reign to do whatever you
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: want with the mom, a whole lot of room to
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: go wherever you want with Jason. So like this just
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: leaves so many options because it wasn't so tied down. Whereas,
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: I don't know, like everything that happened with the Michael
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: Myers of it all, as we've discussed at great length,
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: go back a few episodes. Yeah, I feel like it
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: didn't feel necessary in that story. Whereas this, like, I
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: don't know that it's necessary, but I welcome it. Because
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: they're doing such a good job of it and they're
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: just being interesting with the way they're tackling everything.
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: I think in terms of what I needed, I don't
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: even like you said, I don't even think I need
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: Jason to be a killer in this show. I think
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: if you want to have like the spirit of Jason
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: Voorhees because he died and like the thing that's not
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: been answered is the lake of it all. And what
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: does the lake mean? And, you know, to speak to because, again,
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: if you're listening to this, you probably want us to
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: talk a little bit about the mythology. But, you know,
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: like to speak to the lake of it all. What
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: happens when you die in Camp Crystal Lake's Crystal Lake
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: has never been really explained in terms of a satisfying explanation.
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: But it would seem, based on Crazy Ralph, who is
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: in the movies, based on Crazy Ralph, there is something
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: in the lake that is causing something to be going
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: on outside of the lake that would maybe... yield a
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: Jason or Jason-esque thing to happen, and that being a
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: killer in the woods, question mark? So, that I think
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: is very interesting, because for me, that's kind of like
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: the J.J. Abrams mystery box of it all. There's the Argonaut, sure,
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: I don't know where that's going. I can make assumptions,
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: but I don't think there's any point. I think the
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: thing that for me is more interesting is what does
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: Camp Crystal Lake mean? And like, that's a question that's
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: never really been answered. Well, and what is the purpose
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: behind it? Assuming someone is coming up with this, is
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: it a plan?
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: Is it a government plan? Is it like where we
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: eventually end up? Is it just like military? Like, is
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: it just trying to create a Jason super soldier out
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: of it that can't be killed when you send him
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: into battle?
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: Again, that seems a lot.
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: Would that be dissatisfying to you if that was the case?
- 1:43:06Speaker 2: I mean, it's certainly diving into the silly end of
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: the lake, but it certainly would give them a reason.
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: I mean, it is what we normally want to do
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: is just turn everything into a weapon and make money
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: off of it. So it doesn't seem disingenuous to the
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: world we live in, either in the 80s or now, really.
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: So. I don't know.
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: Again, if that's where we go, it's fine. If they
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: handle it well, I think I would be okay with it.
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: If they just want to do spookiness in the woods,
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: I'm fine with that too. I already feel like that's
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: such a big part of what goes on in most
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: horror movies set in the woods. But in particular, the
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: crystal lake of it all is like, whatever's going on
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: in the woods has always just been like, bring kids
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: out here, let them have sex and do drugs. And
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: then I'm going to murder them. And like, if you
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: want to just leave it as minimal as that, I'm
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: fine with that too. I, I, yeah, I don't, I don't.
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: Need Jason to show up in this show. Like I
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: don't need a Jason with a mask. I would be
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: perfectly fine with the spirit of Jason because he died
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: in the lake being reincarnated. And that being a thing or,
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: or any of that being a thing in terms of
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: any bodies that have gone into the lake or, you know, whatever,
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: like I'm, I'm game for that. Like, I don't need
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: it to be like, well, we're following, you know, here
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: comes Tommy. And like, I don't give a shit. I
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: don't think it's needed. I don't think it's necessary. And
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: I think anybody who that's the expectation for the show,
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: I think the show is doing a very good job at,
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: at not leaning into that, which is important because if
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: you're just, if you're just giving the fans what they want,
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: that is a very small group of people that are
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: not going to exist 20 years from now. And if
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: you want this franchise to exist, you need to do
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: something different with it. And I think that this is
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: kind of checking a lot of those boxes, for me anyways,
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: of this is a thing that's very different. It looks
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: like something you've seen before, but it is still kind
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: of doing its own thing in a lot of ways,
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: inspired by a lot of the things that have come
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: out since this came out. I mean, again, we've talked
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: about Dexter and all these other things that have existed
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: since the initial run of these movies. And, you know,
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: I'm glad that this show is not existing in a vacuum.
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: And it's very smart that it's not. And it's, again, like,
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: leaning into, inspired by, drawing inspiration from other things that, again,
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: live in the same world. Dexter... you know, I mean, again,
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: breaking bad Sopranos, like any show that had a bad
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: guy as the main character is inspired by Sopranos essentially,
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: because it's the show that was like, yeah, you can
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: have a villain as your main character and then kill people.
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: And every single show that has a character like Pamela
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: Voorhees or Dexter or what the fuck is his name
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: in breaking bad? Oh God, I'm going to get roasted
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: for that one. But his character.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: I don't watch shows.
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: Whatever the fuck. They all exist. Dwight or White. Walter White.
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: Walter White.
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: There you go. I dug it out of there and
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: I didn't even watch that one.
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: All of those characters exist because of something like Tony Soprano's.
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: This character included. And because, you know, I don't know
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: if we would have a show with Pamela Voorhees killing
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: people and us going, yeah.
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: It's justified.
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: And it takes a lot to get to this point,
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: but I'm glad we're living at this juncture in time because...
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: I don't think Friday the 13th has much of a
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: future without people doing something with it that's completely removed
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: from the Jason Voorhees of it all. What's funny is
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: we keep saying, like, I don't know if Jason could
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: be in this. In the opening credits, they do have
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: Sean Cunningham's company mentioned as well. So theoretically, Jason could
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: show up in this show, I guess, with the mask on,
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: because Horror Incorporated is the other rights holders to the
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: Jason Voorhees character, and they are mentioned. So I guess
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: they could have Jason in this show as we know him,
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: but I don't think it's as of right now, like
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: the show is doing such a good job at doing
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: its own thing. I'm like, we would kind of be
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: gilding the lily in a way.
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: Or cutting the legs out from under her. Like she's
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: doing such a good job carrying the show by herself
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: that like, if you bring him in too soon, like you,
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: you take away from all the fun stuff she's doing,
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: you know, it's like, so I, I, I feel like, again,
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: if you want to tease that towards the end of
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: the run, that's fine. Or even if they think they
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: can spill over into a second season. But if you're
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: going to keep her as the focus of it, I'm
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: fine with not really getting to him as much. I
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: feel like they're going to because I feel like they
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: think they need to. I feel like story-wise, they think
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: that's what everybody's here for. I don't agree. I think
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: Pamela's doing a great job at what she's doing.
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: But.
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: I think the instinct would be, but we've got to
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: bring Jason in. And I know, I don't know if
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: they'd thrown that out when it was the original showrunner
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: he specifically said he wanted to have the different eras
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: of jason represented in the show as it went along
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: which i'm assuming we're getting baghead jason at some point
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: so i thought we were gonna see that but that
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: also possibly changed hands with the showrunners. So maybe they
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: threw that out. Maybe we won't get that much.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: I assume there's no more Brian Fuller in the show. Like,
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: you know, I think the things that made the show
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: Brian Fuller are there, but I don't know how much
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: like it exists outside of the like Pamela Voorhees set up.
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: I feel like they're doing a lot of like weird
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: non Brian Fuller things that seem very like maybe it's
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: maybe it's, you know, welcome to Derry adjacent, but it
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: definitely feels very its own thing in a very good way. Yeah.
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: I'm glad. I'm glad that this show is good because
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: we as horror fans need wins that are not, I
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: don't know, like elevated horror. And I hate that term,
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: but like, cause that's a dumb fucking term. Like horror
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: has always been elevated. Like it's, it's whatever, like horror
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: has been able to talk about whatever the hell it
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: wanted always.
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: It's all how you look at it. You know, it's
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: like the, again, by the time the geeks like us
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: came along, like we took the dumbest movies from the
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: eighties and then we attached all this meaning and we
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: came up with some sort of overarching plot that or
- 1:49:45Speaker 2: overarching theme that runs through all the horror movies. So
- 1:49:49Speaker 2: it's like, it's as elevated as you want to make it.
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: If you want to sit around talking about it for
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: hours on end, which obviously we do, like you can
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: make it as elevated as you want, no matter how
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: dumb the premise is. It's how much you want to
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: put into it. They just started jamming that right up
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: front when they hit certain movies later. But yeah, I
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: think it's all elevated if you want to dig into it.
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: Well, and, and that's why I hate that term. You know,
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: it's like this, the, we, it's like, it's like, you know,
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: well now using all white meat chicken, like what the
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: fuck were you using before?
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: You don't want to know. Right.
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: Exactly. And it's like, I, I don't, I don't know
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: how to tell people this, but like good horror movies
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: were coming out long before hereditary came out long before like, Oh,
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: the Babadook, which God damn, I hate that movie. Like
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: there are just some movies where I'm like, when I
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: think about that movie, I'm just like the discourse around
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: that movie is obnoxious. And that's not to speak to
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: the movie itself, which is features like a screaming child
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: for an hour and a half.
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: There's a lot of kid to get over.
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: There's a lot of kid in that movie. Congratulations. I, I,
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: I think this is how you do this, right? Which
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: is address a franchise that has existed for a very
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: long time in a new way that, gives the people
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: that are fans something that they've maybe never that they've
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: seen before in a new way and people that have
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: never seen this something interesting and exciting that feels fresh
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: but is recognizable because again like part of this you
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: have to like put some people at ease right like
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: you have to put the people that are new people
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: coming into this at ease like i would suggest this
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: this show to my parents my parents like stranger things
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: a fair amount I think my folks would like the show.
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: Is it a little on the gory side? Sure. But
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: do I think that like most people that have seen
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: the full run of stranger things could watch this and
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: be like, I'm kind of on board with this. Yeah.
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: I think that this is kind of a more adjacent
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: to a mainstream thing than Friday the 13th has been
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: since the first movie came out.
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, that's what I was saying. I feel
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: like the story is engaging enough that it would work
- 1:51:53Speaker 2: for anybody that just, you know, turns on whatever new
- 1:51:55Speaker 2: streaming show is on. it's only when it gets to
- 1:51:58Speaker 2: the gory parts that it like sets it at a
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: different place in time. And like, you have to be
- 1:52:03Speaker 2: okay with that. But as long as you're okay with that, like,
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: I feel like the story would welcome in people that
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: aren't into Friday the 13th in particular, but I think
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: even just not even into horror that much. I think
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: the story is interesting enough. It could bring in some
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: new viewers.
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: Well, and let's not, you know, kind of gloss over
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: the fact that we kind of haven't talked about it.
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: I wouldn't say that any of the violence as it's
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: presented is deathly serious. It's rather comedic. Like there's a
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: lot of like, darkly comedic moments a bag again my
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: bag full of blood filling up on a man's head
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: is very funny uh again her dragging these dead bodies
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: around covered in you know bear attractant is very funny
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: that's the the scene where the guy gets i mean
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: i don't know how funny a guy getting whacked in
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: the faces but this kind of like help me help
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: me and she's like you shouldn't have fucked with me
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: like that is comedic like they're the the violence in
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: the show is not being presented in a It's being
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: presented in the same way Terrifier presents it, where it's
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: like it's serious, but it's also like the show understands
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: that there's some comedy to the grotesque, and it's leaning
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: into it.
- 1:53:14Speaker 2: It's just sort of winking at the audience. It's like, yeah,
- 1:53:18Speaker 2: we know what you like. We know what we are, essentially.
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: We're built from Friday the 13th, so we're going to
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: deliver that when need be. But we're doing some other
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: things along the way as well. But don't worry, we
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: didn't forget about it. We're just going to sprinkle it
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: in every now and then. which works for me.
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: Like I, I, I don't need it to be, I
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: don't need it to be all the time. I do
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: think that getting some non jokey violence works. And I think,
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: you know, we, we do see a little bit of that,
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: maybe not in this episode, but definitely kind of as,
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: as the show goes on, but I'm, I'm a huge
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: fan of being kind of aware of why people are here.
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: It's smart.
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: And I think that smart film writing and TV writing
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: and screenwriting in general is in short supply. And, you know, if,
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: if you are able to get me on board with
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: your show, two episodes in, yeah, you know, Brad, Caleb
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: Kane is doing a pretty good job. Like he's, he's
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: batting two for two. Cause that dairy show is getting like,
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: you know, another season at least. And probably, you know,
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: I think it's like a four, four season run. So,
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: you know, Good for him. I don't know, like we've said,
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: we've kind of steeled ourselves at watching this all in
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: one sitting, so I don't know where this goes, if
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: this does get anything more, but I like that this
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: show is giving me something as a, a fan of
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: Friday the 13th, as much as I can be in
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: some respects, but not like a super fan. I, I've
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: seen enough of the movies. I've watched the camp crystal
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: Lake diaries or memories, whatever it is that Corey Feldman narrated,
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: like five hour long documentary. I've seen it a handful
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: of times, you know, like I'm a fan enough and
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: I know I recognize the beats, but it's doing enough
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: different and fun that I'm like, yeah, I'm here for it.
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: And I, I'm excited to see where it goes. I
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: hope it doesn't overstay its welcome. But that's kind of
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: my hope for any TV show or movies. Like, I
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: don't need another 15 minutes sometimes. Sometimes you're good.
- 1:55:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that's I've been OK with the pacing. Like, I
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: feel like that's part of the problem with a lot
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: of seasons of stuff. It's like sometimes they have a.
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: it's become an ongoing battle for me is like watching
- 1:55:36Speaker 2: movies and deciding, should this be a series or watching
- 1:55:39Speaker 2: series and being like, would this have been a good
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: two hour movie, but doesn't have what it needs for
- 1:55:45Speaker 2: eight hours worth of episodes. So it's like, that's become
- 1:55:48Speaker 2: an ongoing battle post streaming services. You know, it's like
- 1:55:52Speaker 2: once something could have been a limited run series, now
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: you have to decide what does the story need to be.
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: So I think this is, really has kind of worked
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: pretty well. I don't feel like it's just dragging it out.
- 1:56:05Speaker 2: I've seen people that have issues with the, like, it's
- 1:56:09Speaker 2: telling backstory that you didn't need. I'm like, well, I
- 1:56:11Speaker 2: don't feel like it is. It's barely getting to the backstory.
- 1:56:15Speaker 2: It's just building this, this town up and giving you
- 1:56:18Speaker 2: more of these characters and giving you more of why
- 1:56:20Speaker 2: they do what they do. But I don't feel like it's,
- 1:56:23Speaker 2: it's dragging anything out. I feel like it's actually pretty
- 1:56:26Speaker 2: well paced as far as what we've seen so far.
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: If you came into this show with expectations and it's
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: not meeting your expectations, that's on you. Like, you're like, oh,
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: I didn't, it's not the backstory I needed. Like, good
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: for you. I don't know. Like, I don't know what
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: to say at this point. Like, what do you say
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: to that? Like, uh, it's not what I wanted. All right. Yeah.
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: It's probably, it's probably not like, Normally they're complaining because
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: it's not like the thing before, but I'm like, I
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: can say, well, you can go watch the movie, but
- 1:56:53Speaker 2: the movie also.
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: Doesn't have this backstory. So I don't know what to
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: tell you.
- 1:56:57Speaker 2: You're not going to get it anywhere else. Write your
- 1:56:59Speaker 2: own fan fiction, I guess. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: Like, what do you fucking want? Like, if this isn't
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: what you want, go write your own thing then.
- 1:57:06Speaker 2: I think that's the answer.
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the thing. Like, this doesn't have a Lord
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: of the Rings story.
- 1:57:11Speaker 2: Or Harry Potter.
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: Or all this fucking hundreds of pages of bullshit. This has, again, enough,
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: but not so much where it falls apart under the
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: weight of its own premise. This has so much room
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: to do its own thing. And Linda Cardinelli and I
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: think the rest of the cast and the people working
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: on this show understand that and are approaching the show appropriately.
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: She is showing up just... she's showing up in just
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: the right direction where she's believable, sympathetic, but also, you know,
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: like you don't want to fucking piss her off and
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: she'll fucking kill you. If you do like believable, it works.
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: And I, I didn't have on my 2026 bingo card
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: that one of the best things I would have watched
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: would have been Linda Cardinale as Pamela Voorhees. But yet
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: here I am. And yes, it is a Friday, the
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: 13th thing, but it being Friday, the 13th is honestly
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: just a, an, inroad for a lot of people that
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: wouldn't watch it otherwise.
- 1:58:14Speaker 2: Well again it feels almost another everything ties to all
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: the other things out there it feels almost very Castle
- 1:58:20Speaker 2: Rock because it's taking a story in a small town
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: of a kind of thing that you think you're familiar
- 1:58:26Speaker 2: with and just sort of doing its own thing with
- 1:58:29Speaker 2: it And I'm like, yeah, this seems like that town
- 1:58:32Speaker 2: isn't too far away from everything horrible that goes on
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: in Stephen King world. So it's also kind of along
- 1:58:39Speaker 2: that line. And you know what?
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: I'm, you know, if they want to do a nightmare
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: on home street show like this, cool. I'm here for it. Like, I,
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: I don't, I don't know if, if like you said,
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: if movies and TV shows, like, I don't know what
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: justifies something being a movie or something being a TV
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: show anymore. I think by watching those things, it's how
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: we understand what it needs to be. Like, I think
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: it's up to the creators to make that decision and
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: then see if they can actually nail it. And sometimes
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: I've seen something it's like, Oh yeah, this is like, yeah,
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: obviously movie. Perfect. Sometimes I watch it and like, this
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: should have been a TV show. Like, and, and it's not.
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: And because it's not, I think we're missing out on,
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: on something. And that's, you know, I don't know if
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: I ever need another Friday, the 13th movie. If this
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: is what you're going to do with the property, because
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: this is much more interesting. And if you want to
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: do Friday, the 13th movie, maybe give the people what
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: they want and make it a big, dumb slasher and
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: make it, you know, terrifier adjacent with some fun mythology,
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: but let it do its own thing too. You don't
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: have to tie into each other. Like let this be
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: whatever the hell it wants to be. It's clearly wanting
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: to be its own thing. Anyways. Good.
- 1:59:54Speaker 2: It works for me.
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: So on the next episode of Culture Meltdown, we'll be
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: taking a look at the third and fourth episodes of
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: the first season and possibly only season of Crystal Lake.
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: So until then, Brian, where can people find you and
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: the things that you work on?
- 2:00:12Speaker 2: Well, there's this new fancy website I feel like you
- 2:00:16Speaker 2: should check out is what I'm thinking. Where do they
- 2:00:19Speaker 2: need to go to find this website?
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: Weirdingwaymedia.com. That's where. Mike White, our kind of cornerstone of
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: the network. He is the host of The Projection Booth.
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: He has spent the last couple weeks working on a
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: website and it looks fantastic.
- 2:00:35Speaker 2: Head on over there.
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: We no longer are beholden to Spreaker and the amount
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: of money that they take from us that we never see.
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: We're no longer beholden to them other than they give
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: us hosting spots. And that's it. But we no longer
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: have to have you go to their website to listen
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: to our show. You can come to our website and
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: listen to our show right there and engage with us directly.
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: And like Brian said, weirdingwaymedia.com is where you can go
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: to hear everything that we work on. Brian's show, Movie Meltdown,
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: my show, The Culture Cast, this show, Culture Meltdown, The
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: Projection Booth, and so much more. So head on over
- 2:01:09Speaker 1: there to weirdingwaymedia.com, like, rate, and review any show that
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: you listen to on iTunes, then Spotify, in that order.
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: And yeah, you know, come on back for the next
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: episode where we're talking about the third and fourth episodes
- 2:01:22Speaker 1: of Peacock TV slash A24' s Crystal Lake.
