- 0:00Hello. I crossed a few things off of my list,
- 0:03but stuff still happened. So what's up? I want
- 0:08you to know up front, this episode is structured
- 0:10such that all the rough stuff is up front, and
- 0:13then it just kind of gets a little lighter there
- 0:15out. So stick with me. Hey, here we go. Hey,
- 0:19it's Next Day Dev. It's the same guy next day.
- 0:23There's a lot that happened over the past...
- 0:26few days that's pretty horrific as i just said
- 0:28lots of bad stuff up front it gets better as
- 0:31it goes i'm actually re -recording this introduction
- 0:33because i wanted to just add in some more stuff
- 0:36real quick so let's just quick overview of some
- 0:40of the really rough things that happened recently
- 0:42in australia at bondi beach there was a mass
- 0:45shooting at a hanukkah celebration very obviously
- 0:49a targeted attack against jews uh it's horrific
- 0:52And this is not a thing that happens outside
- 0:54of like the US particularly frequently. So it's
- 0:57pretty shocking to say the least. However, among
- 1:00the mess of this situation, there is a hero that
- 1:03people are celebrating. Ahmed Al Ahmed, who ran
- 1:07in and disarmed one of the shooters. He took
- 1:10two bullets while doing so and saved who knows
- 1:14how many people. Now, I've seen some weird takes
- 1:16online about people criticizing the guy for not
- 1:19taking the gun that he just took from the shooter
- 1:21and using it to kill the shooter who he just
- 1:24disarmed. He disarmed him. Not everything needs
- 1:27to be solved by shooting somebody with a gun.
- 1:29Or if it was me, I would have shot the guy. Cool.
- 1:32Enjoy the trauma. Like here's a man who just
- 1:35disarmed someone to save lives and you're criticizing
- 1:37him for not having taken a life. Thankfully,
- 1:40that's a very small minority of people. Let's
- 1:43talk about Rob Reiner. This literally just kind
- 1:45of happened overnight. Rob Reiner, the famed
- 1:47movie director who directed Princess Bride, was
- 1:50found dead, him and his wife, in his home in
- 1:52an apparent homicide. We really don't know a
- 1:54whole lot more just yet. That's a thing. There
- 1:58was also a shooting at Brown University here
- 2:00in the States. The shooter is still at large,
- 2:02despite the president of our country. stating
- 2:06publicly that the shooter was captured. That
- 2:09was not true. That was not true. There's been
- 2:11an ongoing war in Sudan for years that's been
- 2:13causing a massive humanitarian crisis, possibly
- 2:16the biggest ever. But recently, the RSF, one
- 2:19of the major militias in the area that's basically
- 2:21backed by the UAE, slaughtered 60 ,000 people
- 2:26in one town over the course of just a few weeks.
- 2:29It's so significant that aid groups can't even
- 2:32get aid there because it's too dangerous. Over
- 2:35100 ,000 people are still unaccounted for from
- 2:37all of that. It's a massive crisis, and there's
- 2:41not a whole lot we can do, which makes me feel
- 2:44very powerless, and I'm sure it makes you feel
- 2:46very powerless as well. It's important to know
- 2:49that these are things that are happening, but
- 2:51it's also important to remember that we can't
- 2:52just fix it. That is the problem with being a
- 2:57human. So the first step is being aware that
- 2:59these things are happening. And the next step
- 3:00is making sure folks in your life know as well.
- 3:03It's never a comfortable conversation to have,
- 3:06but we won't ever have change until people are
- 3:09actually aware of how the world works. Thanks
- 3:12for getting through that with me. Let's move
- 3:14on. I promise it gets better. It's going to be
- 3:16rough first, but then it gets better. So the
- 3:18US government under President Trump and his just...
- 3:21gaggle of ghouls have been chasing down people
- 3:24in the streets who are not white and demanding
- 3:27immigration papers and then taking them to makeshift
- 3:30prisons. Often there's just no due process whatsoever.
- 3:33Sometimes they're showing up at a courthouse
- 3:35where someone's trying to do their immigration
- 3:37meeting and they get arrested and thrown into
- 3:41a prison. Prisons that have basically no oversight.
- 3:44And in the case of the infamous alligator Alcatraz
- 3:47in Florida, Worse oversight than a standard ICE
- 3:51facility. Because Alligator Alcatraz, which is
- 3:54actually the Everglades detention facility, is
- 3:57not a federal facility. It's a state facility.
- 4:00The state of Florida is using funds from FEMA
- 4:03to build a concentration camp. And the reports
- 4:07coming out of there are horrific. Now, before
- 4:09I get into that, you might be confused because
- 4:11there was a big story about how a judge had ordered
- 4:14for Alligator Alcatraz to be shut down. That
- 4:16didn't happen. because that order was shut down.
- 4:19So it's been a thing, and it's still a thing.
- 4:23Inside the facility are cages packed with 32
- 4:26people to a cage. Mosquitoes are running rampant.
- 4:29There's basically no working plumbing, so feces
- 4:32are just spilling out of the toilets and seeping
- 4:34everywhere. One of the most eye -popping things
- 4:37to come out of this is literal torture. There's
- 4:40apparently a thing called the box that's like
- 4:43a tiny metal cage that inmates at this facility
- 4:46get strapped into, shackled to, and left out
- 4:51in the elements for hours up to a day at a time.
- 4:53That is torture. That's torture. It does not
- 4:56matter anything about anyone's legal immigration
- 4:59status. This is not acceptable. Even the most
- 5:02self -serving take on this should be that, hey,
- 5:06Maybe the government shouldn't have the ability
- 5:09to do this to people who have not been found
- 5:11guilty of a crime. Being brown and here at the
- 5:14same time and found by an ICE officer while doing
- 5:18so is not a crime. Meanwhile, over in Texas at
- 5:21Fort Bliss, there's been reports of abuse, sexual
- 5:24abuse, and even forcing detainees to climb over
- 5:27the border wall to secretly deport them. One
- 5:31teenager from that facility was taken to the
- 5:33hospital after guards beat and abused him so
- 5:35badly that he had broken teeth and severe testicular
- 5:39trauma. I don't think that's helping our country.
- 5:43Anyway, the Department of Homeland Security's
- 5:45response is, nuh -uh. Here's a quote from the
- 5:50DHS assistant secretary, Tricia McLaughlin. Quote,
- 5:54any claim that there are inhumane conditions
- 5:56at ICE detention centers are categorically false.
- 6:00No detainees are being beaten or abused. Remember
- 6:04the hospitalized inmate? Anyway, moving on, continuing
- 6:09the quote. Quote, no lawbreakers in the history
- 6:12of civilization have been treated better than
- 6:15illegal aliens in the United States. get a grip.
- 6:19I don't want to just sit here and say that these
- 6:21people are overtly evil. I also don't know what
- 6:26takeaway we're supposed to have besides that.
- 6:28I have watched every day as human lives have
- 6:32been destroyed and I've been told by our officials
- 6:36to not care about that. And then I see people
- 6:39who are supporting this saying, ha ha, that's
- 6:42what I voted for. They need to do worse things
- 6:45to these people. Like, hey, that's awful. You're
- 6:50a bad person. But I also want to be very clear
- 6:52that I've seen a lot of tides turning about this,
- 6:56and I've seen a lot more resistance from people
- 6:59who thought that this was going to be different.
- 7:01I don't know why they thought it was going to
- 7:03be different, but they're finally now waking
- 7:05up to the fact that, hey, maybe running on a
- 7:09platform of mass deportation now doesn't result
- 7:13in the best administration. But here is a little
- 7:16bit of good news. We're starting to trend upwards,
- 7:19I promise. Because among all this immigration
- 7:20madness, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man who was,
- 7:23quote, mistakenly deported to the one country
- 7:26he wasn't supposed to be deported to, is back
- 7:29home. As a very quick recap, Kilmar Abrego Garcia
- 7:32was hanging out in front of a Home Depot looking
- 7:35for work when ICE agents arrested him. They used
- 7:38his bull's hat to say that he was a gang member.
- 7:41And then they deported him to Seacott, the torture
- 7:44prison in El Salvador. And then it came out that
- 7:47that was the one country that he was not supposed
- 7:50to be deported to if he was deported, which he
- 7:53wasn't supposed to be. To which the U .S. government
- 7:56was like, no, he's a gang member. And also now
- 8:01that he's there already, we can't do anything
- 8:03to bring him back. And then he was brought back.
- 8:06Then when he was brought back, the Department
- 8:08of Justice was like, he will never go free on
- 8:11U .S. soil. That's a quote that is wild. This
- 8:15is a dude who is hanging out at a Home Depot
- 8:17looking for work as a day laborer. He's never
- 8:20going to go free on U .S. soil. Come on, you
- 8:24guys. It is embarrassing how much energy has
- 8:28been put into things that don't fucking matter
- 8:30and just make everything worse. So yeah, he gets
- 8:34back here. They're like, he's never going to
- 8:37go free. And the U .S. government continuously
- 8:38tries to deport the man to three different countries,
- 8:42this time in Africa. All the while, Abrego Garcia
- 8:45and his lawyers were saying, hey, he'll move
- 8:48to Costa Rica if you want him to. And officials
- 8:50from Costa Rica were like, sure, yeah, we'll
- 8:53take him. To which ICE was like, no, that's not
- 8:56on the table. It has to be an African country.
- 9:00for reasons. Essentially, the government fucked
- 9:02up real bad. And because we know that nobody
- 9:05in this administration can ever admit fault on
- 9:08anything, they just double, triple, quadruple
- 9:11down on this random dude claiming that he is
- 9:14this hardened criminal. And at this point, they
- 9:16can't back off because they've already made it
- 9:19so clear. They've staked their claim on deporting
- 9:23this one guy who wasn't supposed to be deported.
- 9:27Because if there is a guy who is that color and
- 9:30was deported and brought back because, hey, he
- 9:32wasn't supposed to be deported, that breaks their
- 9:35narrative. Their narrative being that everyone
- 9:37who's that color deserves to be deported. Anyway,
- 9:40this is all kind of still ongoing. Kilmar is
- 9:42still not totally free. He's basically on house
- 9:44arrest. He has to check in with ICE, although
- 9:46a judge has signed a thing saying ICE can't arrest
- 9:49him. But it's ICE. We'll see. Let's move on.
- 9:53Let's keep that upward trend. McDonald's! in
- 9:57the netherlands i don't know why i hopped i'm
- 9:59not that excited about mcdonald's generally so
- 10:01mcdonald's netherlands like specifically the
- 10:03dutch arm of mcdonald's published an ai generated
- 10:05ad that caught so much flack they have already
- 10:08taken it down the ad was essentially a bunch
- 10:11of clips of like fails like fail video kind of
- 10:15stuff just like unfortunate situations set to
- 10:18a remix of It's the most wonderful time of the
- 10:22year where they were saying it's the most awful,
- 10:24terrible time of the year. Who cares? Point being,
- 10:26it was a bad idea and the commercial was creepy
- 10:29and people didn't like it at all. Beyond being
- 10:32AI slop, it also was just an uncomfortable commercial.
- 10:35So understandably so, it got a whole bunch of
- 10:37pushback and people were like, this is just,
- 10:39this is awful. This is terrible. Please take
- 10:41this down. And the studio behind the ad gave
- 10:44the worst defense imaginable. The production
- 10:47company, The Sweet Shop, had this to say in their
- 10:50defense. Quote, for seven weeks, we hardly slept
- 10:54with up to 10 of our in -house AI and post specialists
- 10:58at the gardening club, our in -house AI engine,
- 11:01working in lockstep with the directors. We generated
- 11:04what felt like dailies, thousands of takes, then
- 11:07shaped them in the edit just as we would on any
- 11:10high craft production. That response from the
- 11:14company has mysteriously disappeared from their
- 11:17website. I wonder why we were up all night asking
- 11:20this computer to plagiarize things. So that was
- 11:22the McDonald's ad and that got pulled. But Coca
- 11:25-Cola did their second annual Christmas ad this
- 11:28year generated with AI. Last year they did one
- 11:30and it got some criticism. People being like
- 11:32this is soulless and plasticky. And then they
- 11:35did it again because soullessness and plastic
- 11:39the American way. Now, for whatever reason, the
- 11:42Coke commercial this time around, it didn't get
- 11:44as much backlash as the McDonald's one. But something
- 11:47I learned when I was digging into this was that
- 11:50Coke essentially humble brags about having made
- 11:55Santa popular. Now, it's a humble brag because
- 11:58on Coca -Cola's website, there's a page that's
- 12:01like, are we responsible for Santa being a thing?
- 12:04And they're like, no, we just popularized it.
- 12:07They argue that. that the reason that santa is
- 12:11how we know him today is because they commissioned
- 12:13an artist to do a bunch of ads for coke that
- 12:16depicted santa as the way he is today and that
- 12:19was distributed all over the place because coke
- 12:21ads they did not invent the original santa and
- 12:24also it's debatable as to whether or not their
- 12:27ads are the reason that people know santa today
- 12:29but what a claim anyway i don't think that we
- 12:32need this i don't think i don't think we need
- 12:33this i don't think that we need ai to generate
- 12:35commercials i don't think do we do do we i say
- 12:40we like the human race do we need this i don't
- 12:45i don't think so i'm not certain but let's go
- 12:48over to the gamer place here we go now we're
- 12:53in the gamer place cool welcome to the gamer
- 12:56space we're going to talk about the game awards
- 12:57the game awards are kind of shitty there's just
- 12:59like an industry event that's that's pretty pretty
- 13:01shitty uh but it's kind of all we got right now
- 13:04ever since e3 was ejected from this world so
- 13:09who won expedition 33 won everything basically
- 13:14not literally everything uh but let's see here
- 13:17clear obscure expedition 33 won game of the year
- 13:20best art direction best game direction best narrative
- 13:24best score best performance that's for Jennifer
- 13:28English best indie game best debut indie game
- 13:31and best rpg I may have missed something Can't
- 13:34count much past that. Let's talk about what was
- 13:36announced, because first things first, we're
- 13:39getting a new Divinity game from Larian. Larian
- 13:41made their big announcement, which involved a
- 13:44statue in the desert. I don't really fully understand,
- 13:47but they put a statue in a desert, and they were
- 13:50like, look at this statue. What could this be?
- 13:52And then people were like, I don't know. What
- 13:55could that be? And then it turned out that it
- 13:58had something to do with the reveal of this new
- 14:00game. Cool. Point being, Larian Studios, the
- 14:03company that made Baldur's Gate 3, is making
- 14:05a new mainline entry in their series Divinity.
- 14:09It's another RPG series very similar to Baldur's
- 14:12Gate. Only they said that this was going to be
- 14:13even bigger than Baldur's Gate 3. So that's cool.
- 14:16There's a bunch of other announcements. Here's
- 14:18a handful of things that I had a non -zero reaction
- 14:20to. There's going to be a sequel to Control called
- 14:23Control Resident. You'll be able to play as Leon
- 14:25Kennedy in the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem
- 14:28game. Leon! There's gonna be two new Tomb Raider
- 14:31games because one wasn't enough. There's too
- 14:34many tombs. One of them is a remaster of like
- 14:36the original game. Not really a remaster, like
- 14:38a re -imagination, I guess. They're making a
- 14:41new mainline Mega Man game. Yo, got a new trailer
- 14:45for the Street Fighter movie, which I forgot
- 14:47was happening. And it looks wild and I'm expecting
- 14:51it to be terrible. I'm here for it. Also a new
- 14:55D &D themed RPG that seems to be about being
- 14:57a warlock. so it's sort of like me i'm a warlock
- 15:02that was magic lightning round a hiker did the
- 15:05meme uh fell into some quicksand and was rescued
- 15:09from said quicksand after using like a gps sos
- 15:12thing quicksand's real y 'all It happened. After
- 15:15losing power to both engines, a small plane made
- 15:18an emergency landing on I -95 in Florida, landing
- 15:21directly on a driving car. Everyone's okay, but
- 15:25the guy driving that car, I can't even imagine.
- 15:27Like, I would never get in a car again. It turns
- 15:29out just a few weeks prior to the U .S. raiding
- 15:31an oil tanker off of Venezuela, we also raided
- 15:35a cargo ship that was headed to China. Just did
- 15:38that too. Going from Iran to China, and we were
- 15:41just like, that's ours now. Yo -ho? I guess?
- 15:46I'm not a huge fan of that in particular. And
- 15:48finally for today, someone's house in California
- 15:50done dang exploded. And it was captured on video
- 15:54from a doorbell camera, but it's gone. House
- 15:56was there, and then it was not. It was because
- 15:59of a gas leak from construction. Hey, maybe gas
- 16:02is a bad idea. Thank you so much for listening
- 16:04to today's episode of Stuff Keeps Happening.
- 16:06Head to skh .news for sources. bonus content,
- 16:10and a primer on how to make your own quicksand
- 16:14to trap hikers. My name is Endeavorance. We'll
- 16:17talk again soon. Take care and be well.
