Sam: Hey there, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about Amy Gallo's book,. Sophie, I have to ask, what's the one type of coworker that immediately makes you want to run the other direction?
• 0:14
Sophie: Oh, easy. The Pessimist. You know, the person who shoots down every idea before you've even finished the sentence. But this book totally reframed that for me. Gallo says that behavior often comes from a fear of failure, not from being a jerk.

Sam: Right. And she starts the whole book by saying we need to look at ourselves first. Before we label someone difficult, we have to check our own triggers. I remember a colleague who would interrupt me constantly, and it drove me insane. But Gallo would say, 'Why does that bother you so much?' For me, it was because I felt disrespected, but someone else might not even flinch.

Sophie: Exactly. She calls those 'hot buttons.' They're rooted in our personal history. So the first step is self-awareness. Ask yourself, 'What's my role in this dynamic?' That's not about blaming yourself, but about reclaiming agency. You can't control them, but you can control your response.

Sam: And then she gives you this toolkit of eight archetypes. There's the Pessimist, the Victim, the Know-It-All, the Insecure Boss, the Torchbearer who takes on too much, the Politicizer who gossips, the Bulldozer who steamrolls, and the Avoider who dodges conflict. Each one gets a whole chapter with tailored strategies.
• 1:38
Sophie: I loved the strategy for the Pessimist. Instead of asking, 'Do you think this will work?' which invites a no, you ask, 'What would need to be true for this to succeed?' That shifts their brain from blocking to building. You're channeling their negativity into constructive criticism.
• 1:55
Sam: Totally. And for the Victim, she warns against becoming their rescuer. If you solve their problems, you reinforce their helplessness. Instead, she says practice 'compassionate accountability.' Acknowledge their frustration, but then ask, 'What's one thing you can do to change this?'
• 2:14
Sophie: The Insecure Boss chapter was huge for me. Gallo says don't try to prove your worth, that just makes them more threatened. Instead, manage their anxiety by over-communicating. Give them sneak peeks of your work, ask for their input upfront. You're basically providing the psychological safety they can't provide for themselves.
• 2:35
Sam: And for the Politicizer, the gossipy type, she says to become 'un-gameable.' When they come to you with gossip, just say, 'That sounds like a conversation you should have with them directly.' You refuse to be an audience, and you build a reputation for integrity.
• 2:51
Sophie: There's also a universal framework for giving feedback called SBI, Situation, Behavior, and Impact. Instead of saying, 'You're always so negative,' you say, 'In yesterday's meeting, when you pointed out three risks, I noticed the team became hesitant to share ideas.' It's specific, objective, and not about their character.
• 3:13
Sam: I really appreciated that she doesn't pretend every relationship can be saved. She talks about 'good conflict' vs. 'bad conflict.' Sometimes you just need to set boundaries and focus on 'getting by' instead of 'getting along.' That's permission to disengage from a truly toxic situation.
• 3:32
Sophie: Yes. And she ends with this mindset shift, instead of seeing a difficult colleague as a problem to be solved, see them as a puzzle to be understood. That moves you from frustration to curiosity. It turns a drain on your energy into an opportunity to practice a valuable skill.
• 3:51
Sam: The one thing I'm taking away is that I can't change other people, but I can change how I interact with them. And that starts with understanding my own triggers and then diagnosing what's really driving their behavior.
• 4:03
Sophie: And if you want to go deeper, the whole library's over at 7minutebooks.com/app, with over six thousand fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language. It starts at $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 once for lifetime access.
• 4:25
Sam: That's it for. Sophie, any final thought?
• 4:29
Sophie: Just that the goal isn't to avoid friction, but to become a skilled conflict navigator. We'll see you in the next one.
