- 0:13Speaker 1: and I'm here with my co-host, Chris Spencer.
- 0:16Speaker 2: And our next.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Guest really needs no introduction, Chris. I mean, she's been
- 0:22Speaker 1: on the TV a lot.
- 0:24Speaker 3: And movies. Yeah, movies.
- 0:25Speaker 4: I mean, shows like Curb the Enthusiasm, The Parkers.
- 0:28Speaker 3: That's when the whites really learned about her.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:31Speaker 4: And she has a podcast with one of our besties,
- 0:34Speaker 4: Sherri Shepherd.
- 0:36Speaker 3: What up, SS?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Who's now on Broadway.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Yes, Broadway, doing big things on Broadway.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Genie in the bottom.
- 0:43Speaker 4: We'll let her, bestie tell her, tell us about it.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah, sure.
- 0:48Speaker 4: But yeah, man, I've known Kim for a very long time.
- 0:52Speaker 3: We go way back. Okay, I want to hear about it.
- 0:54Speaker 5: Because the way y'all blushing in front of me like
- 0:56Speaker 5: some children.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Do you see my melanin tone?
- 1:01Speaker 3: Where's blushing?
- 1:02Speaker 4: Where do you see blushing?
- 1:03Speaker 3: I don't know. Your brown has turned to burgundy.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I will be purple if I'm blushing.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the show, Kim Whitley.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Oh, gosh, you guys are funny. What's wrong with y'all?
- 1:15Speaker 3: Can we get a close-up on their faces?
- 1:17Speaker 5: Did y'all mess around in the 90s? Did y'all mess
- 1:21Speaker 5: around in Georgia? I don't think we started the show
- 1:22Speaker 5: that way. Did y'all go to Georgia and mess around
- 1:23Speaker 5: in a shark bar or something like that?
- 1:25Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 1:26Speaker 2: We've known each other for quite a long time.
- 1:28Speaker 3: How well?
- 1:29Speaker 2: Huh? We're going to start the show just straight like that?
- 1:32Speaker 2: The show is called Get to the Point.
- 1:33Speaker 3: I'm sorry. Baby, you don't want me to.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Get to the point because I've been waiting on you
- 1:36Speaker 2: to call me since then.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Ooh.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Okay. Sip of the coffee. What are you saying, Kim?
- 1:42Speaker 3: He stood you up?
- 1:44Speaker 2: I'm not saying he stood me up. We've never talked
- 1:46Speaker 2: about it. I don't think this is the place to
- 1:47Speaker 2: talk about it. No, we need to talk about it.
- 1:49Speaker 2: This is the place. Get to the point, Kimberly. This
- 1:51Speaker 2: is the place to talk about it.
- 1:53Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Yeah, get to the point. Terrell, you don't even talk.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I can't even believe you on a show like this talking.
- 2:00Speaker 2: This is crazy.
- 2:01Speaker 3: You shy?
- 2:04Speaker 2: What? I mean, especially in the beginning when he had
- 2:07Speaker 2: his braces and everything.
- 2:08Speaker 3: That's when I knew him.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Wait, was that a nerd voice? Yeah, he was very,
- 2:12Speaker 2: you know. I think I'm the one that brought him out. Interesting.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Out of his shell.
- 2:18Speaker 2: We had a talk and said, you got to do
- 2:20Speaker 2: some things to be seen and noticed. Like, that's what
- 2:23Speaker 2: I did in my career.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Illustrious career, mind you.
- 2:27Speaker 2: He cut up. He came on out. I think the
- 2:30Speaker 2: first thing you did was the Sharpie, something you did,
- 2:31Speaker 2: and I did like that. As soon as that happened,
- 2:33Speaker 2: I was like... Where's my phone? Did it call? You're
- 2:38Speaker 2: supposed to.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Give me credit.
- 2:39Speaker 1: What?
- 2:40Speaker 2: Credit? I did get a bit of debt. It ain't
- 2:42Speaker 2: got to be credit. But, boy, he went. And I
- 2:45Speaker 2: was like this. Oh, okay. I can't get us.
- 2:48Speaker 3: I skyrocketed, huh?
- 2:49Speaker 2: You did. I was like, if you'd have just. But,
- 2:51Speaker 2: I mean, you know, same. There's a couple people. You know,
- 2:54Speaker 2: God gave me credit. He's taking care of me. But
- 2:57Speaker 2: I could have gotten some more tickets to the game. Oh,
- 3:00Speaker 2: but you got a few. But I didn't get enough.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I was like. Oh, boy.
- 3:04Speaker 3: This is crazy. Where is this going?
- 3:06Speaker 2: Were you dating somebody else?
- 3:09Speaker 3: It's a friendship thing?
- 3:11Speaker 2: That's way too much for your show. But we've been friends,
- 3:14Speaker 2: but for me, we lost contact.
- 3:19Speaker 3: After he blew up, after all those tips you gave him.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I'm not going to say all. He just really, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 2: and then he got his braces off, and then he
- 3:27Speaker 2: was getting all kind of attention, and he... And I
- 3:31Speaker 2: was happy for him. I was really, and the first
- 3:33Speaker 2: time I saw him, I remember, and he was with
- 3:35Speaker 2: that girl, and she was cute, but she was not
- 3:39Speaker 2: really your type, but she was, you know, one of those. Wait, wait, wait.
- 3:43Speaker 2: What's one of those? You know, one of the maid people. Like,
- 3:47Speaker 2: they just, you know, I can't say it because I
- 3:50Speaker 2: don't want to get in trouble. You can't get in trouble.
- 3:52Speaker 3: We can edit.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yes, you can get in trouble. I know you. Oh,
- 3:55Speaker 2: I don't trust nothing about you. Brendan, yes, I don't
- 3:59Speaker 2: trust you. You'll be like, keep that. Kim got canceled.
- 4:04Speaker 2: It's okay. My ratings went up. So wait, just give
- 4:08Speaker 2: me an idea.
- 4:09Speaker 3: When you say one of those, are you saying a
- 4:11Speaker 3: white girl? No, no, no.
- 4:13Speaker 2: She was an other, but she was, you know, with
- 4:15Speaker 2: the long hair and the perfectness. What's wrong with that? Oh,
- 4:20Speaker 2: your wife, that's right. You married Vanessa's, that long hair.
- 4:24Speaker 3: But what's wrong with.
- 4:25Speaker 2: But Vanessa's regular. It's a different kind of... Like, Vanessa's
- 4:28Speaker 2: long hair, pretty, all that. You know, back in the
- 4:30Speaker 2: day when I met her, but it's a different... So
- 4:33Speaker 2: what is wrong with the girl he was dating? It.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Is she a Kardashian or something?
- 4:40Speaker 2: Without the name.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Was she famous?
- 4:44Speaker 1: Nope.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Nope, she wasn't. Why are we talking about this? We've
- 4:49Speaker 2: never talked about it. I see hurt on your face
- 4:51Speaker 2: and I want to.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Hurt?
- 4:52Speaker 2: I'm not hurt. I was happy for him.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Did you hear her say she was happy for him?
- 4:57Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I was happy for him when I saw him with
- 4:59Speaker 2: the girl, but I wanted to be like... That couldn't
- 5:02Speaker 2: be me. No, I really wanted to... See, that's hurt,
- 5:03Speaker 2: ladies and gentlemen. No, that's not hurt. That's Jalen Hurts.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I just wanted to be like... I wanted him to
- 5:08Speaker 2: acknowledge me and just be like, hey, girl. And he
- 5:11Speaker 2: was cool, but he was already T.O. And once you
- 5:14Speaker 2: become T.O., he was T.O. He was different. He wasn't
- 5:17Speaker 2: the little dude I was talking about, the shy dude.
- 5:20Speaker 3: With the braces.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yeah. He had already become a superstar, so he was different,
- 5:24Speaker 2: if that makes sense.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Do you agree with any of this?
- 5:26Speaker 1: I can see where she could. I think that, I
- 5:29Speaker 1: understand that. I transitioned, I transformed. She saw me in
- 5:32Speaker 1: the beginning stages.
- 5:33Speaker 4: I was in the ugly duckling stage.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Hold up. Kim Whitley, don't do ugly. Hold up.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I'm just at the ugly duckling stage for me. Again,
- 5:43Speaker 1: I had the braces. I was Californian first time. Kim
- 5:48Speaker 1: Whitley's like, again. We've already talked about it with some
- 5:52Speaker 1: of our guests already. Like me being immersed into Hollywood,
- 5:55Speaker 1: meeting these stars.
- 5:58Speaker 3: And yeah, Kim was one of those. What year are
- 6:01Speaker 3: we talking?
- 6:02Speaker 4: I don't even remember. This was 97, 96, 97.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Like it was like within my first three years.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Because I had the braces. That was my first, within
- 6:11Speaker 4: my first three.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Years in the league. Yeah.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Kim, she was at the house and everything. Show up.
- 6:17Speaker 2: We're part of the house. You're messy. You're messy.
- 6:23Speaker 3: You're messy.
- 6:26Speaker 2: You know what? I've been happy for him, but we never,
- 6:28Speaker 2: we never, like me and you hang out all the time.
- 6:30Speaker 4: It's funny you say, we've never really discussed or talked
- 6:33Speaker 4: about it.
- 6:33Speaker 2: We have never talked about it. I cannot believe we're
- 6:36Speaker 2: doing this on your show and not mine.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Right, it's crazy.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I've got an attitude now. No, and when you were
- 6:41Speaker 2: going to come on, the Two Funny Mamas show.
- 6:45Speaker 3: You can't stop it. Come on. You got to say
- 6:48Speaker 3: Two Funny Mamas all together.
- 6:49Speaker 2: All together.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Yeah, because I didn't know where it was going.
- 6:51Speaker 2: That was good. That was good. When you show up.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I ain't never seen you act like this. Huh?
- 7:00Speaker 3: Both of y'all are weird.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Who?
- 7:03Speaker 1: Weird.
- 7:03Speaker 3: That's what, like, you know when you find out your
- 7:04Speaker 3: mama's sleeping with somebody.
- 7:06Speaker 1: You be like.
- 7:06Speaker 2: That is hilarious. Your mama.
- 7:08Speaker 3: You be like, why is.
- 7:10Speaker 2: The refrigerator in the pyramid acting like that?
- 7:14Speaker 5: Remember in Django, when Sam Jackson whispered in Leonardo's ear
- 7:22Speaker 5: about Jamie.
- 7:23Speaker 3: He goes, them two know each other.
- 7:26Speaker 2: He sure did. He did that.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Them two knows each other.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Oh, because he knew from the energy.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Yes.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Boom.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Look at you two weirdos.
- 7:34Speaker 2: That's my baby right there. All right, I'm going to
- 7:38Speaker 2: pay for the next date. Both of y'all single, right?
- 7:41Speaker 2: We ain't going to go nowhere.
- 7:42Speaker 3: We're going to be raggedy.
- 7:44Speaker 2: You go plant a little five-foot pool.
- 7:47Speaker 5: Kim just got her pool made into an adult pool
- 7:52Speaker 5: from 10 feet.
- 7:52Speaker 2: That's right. So they can wade. And tell life. And
- 7:55Speaker 2: that's what I was mad because everybody kept calling you
- 7:57Speaker 2: Terrell or.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Whatever in the beginning. And you know the real Terrell.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I was so irritated.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I would correct people. I was like, that is not
- 8:03Speaker 2: his name. Please stop.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Thank you, Kim.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Thank you, Kim. And then it went to T.O. and
- 8:07Speaker 2: I was like, okay. but I couldn't be mad because
- 8:10Speaker 2: he was becoming a superstar with the things that we
- 8:13Speaker 2: talked about and he did it and he rose this
- 8:17Speaker 2: is what people don't understand you gotta do stuff different
- 8:19Speaker 2: in Hollywood and everywhere he started doing things to be
- 8:23Speaker 2: noticed that you told him to do no I didn't
- 8:25Speaker 2: tell him we just had a discussion about it I
- 8:26Speaker 2: didn't give him like you gotta do this and do
- 8:28Speaker 2: that but we had the discussion that's what it sounded
- 8:29Speaker 2: like earlier but go ahead well no it was to
- 8:32Speaker 2: be different we had that discussion right how do you
- 8:35Speaker 2: stick out.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Right and understanding that coming from Alabama, being in California
- 8:41Speaker 1: for the first time, immersed into Hollywood, now I'm meeting
- 8:45Speaker 1: somebody that was in that space.
- 8:49Speaker 4: How do you navigate it?
- 8:51Speaker 3: What is it like?
- 8:52Speaker 2: Was she your first actress you dated? Wow.
- 8:56Speaker 3: You see how he set up?
- 8:57Speaker 2: Friendship. You see how he set that up? Listen, let's
- 8:59Speaker 2: go back. Can't be with the Fisk. He set you
- 9:02Speaker 2: up good. He almost answered. If you would have came
- 9:05Speaker 2: out and said seventh, I would have hollered.
- 9:09Speaker 3: So wait, y'all got another thing in common.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Where'd you go to college?
- 9:11Speaker 4: I went to UT Chattanooga.
- 9:12Speaker 3: And where'd you go?
- 9:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I was at Nashville Fisk.
- 9:15Speaker 1: How far is that from each other? About an hour
- 9:18Speaker 1: and 45, maybe two hours.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Not far. Not far. Y'all didn't know each other then?
- 9:23Speaker 2: No. No, no, no. I'm older than he is.
- 9:25Speaker 3: No, I didn't.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Yeah, that was my extent of love. Did you start theater?
- 9:30Speaker 3: Like older women.
- 9:31Speaker 2: See, why did I agree to come on this show?
- 9:36Speaker 4: I guess I can say that.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Hold on, Stella. Oh, wow.
- 9:38Speaker 2: We should have done Two Funny Mamas. I'm feeling real uncomfortable.
- 9:44Speaker 2: I'm so mad. And why did you stand me up
- 9:46Speaker 2: for Two Funny Mamas? No, no, no.
- 9:48Speaker 3: I didn't stand up. No, I'm coming.
- 9:50Speaker 2: That's twice in my lifetime. The show's canceled. I will
- 9:54Speaker 2: beat you. Where's Brenda? Where's the producer? I can't do this.
- 9:58Speaker 3: I only can't i will be on the show i
- 10:01Speaker 3: promise you.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Wait wait this guy is a stickler for people who
- 10:07Speaker 5: don't right are not people of their word are you
- 10:10Speaker 5: telling me this dude has integrity kim so are you.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Telling me he flaked on you because that's not what he.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Does You know if I say something, you know I'm
- 10:19Speaker 4: going to do it.
- 10:20Speaker 3: So you're calling her a liar?
- 10:21Speaker 4: No, I'm not saying she's lying.
- 10:23Speaker 3: She's just wrong?
- 10:24Speaker 5: Because what she's saying is you were supposed to do
- 10:28Speaker 5: two funny mamas with.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Her and Sherri Shepherd.
- 10:30Speaker 6: And yeah that was there was your candle we're gonna
- 10:33Speaker 6: talk about that no no but something ironically he's blown
- 10:40Speaker 6: you out twice because he can't.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Blow out he's good i mean that didn't sound right
- 10:44Speaker 2: that's not what i meant that's not okay wow wow
- 10:47Speaker 2: i quit okay i didn't plan.
- 10:49Speaker 5: For this to go this way what i'm saying is Terrell,
- 10:56Speaker 5: or whatever his name was, with the braces, became T.O.
- 11:00Speaker 5: He blew you out then. And then for the podcast,
- 11:03Speaker 5: he blew you back out.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I mean, he blew. Whoa.
- 11:07Speaker 2: I need some liquor. This is not just coffee. Go
- 11:09Speaker 2: get it. Whoa, Chris. So he didn't show up.
- 11:13Speaker 3: So let's get back on point because he always talks
- 11:15Speaker 3: about his integrity. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:17Speaker 2: My legs got tight. What's wrong with me? Let me relax. Okay,
- 11:20Speaker 2: here we go. Let's start to get action.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Boy, you're giving this dude too much material over here. No, no.
- 11:24Speaker 2: You're right.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Let's get serious for a minute. Okay, let's just get
- 11:28Speaker 3: serious for a minute.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Let's stay on script.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Yeah, let's stay on script.
- 11:31Speaker 3: He is known for his integrity.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Yes, he is.
- 11:33Speaker 3: There's people who are supposed to be on the show
- 11:34Speaker 3: and he said no because these people weren't men or
- 11:38Speaker 3: women of their word.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Are you telling me He's a hypocrite?
- 11:44Speaker 2: I would never say that about him. Okay, good. What
- 11:47Speaker 2: I would say— Why the fuck are you whispering?
- 11:49Speaker 3: What the hell happened?
- 11:50Speaker 4: These are great mics.
- 11:52Speaker 3: They pick up everything.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Right, thank you. That's why.
- 11:54Speaker 3: I want to move on. This is scary.
- 11:56Speaker 2: What I will say is that something happened in his schedule,
- 12:00Speaker 2: and he couldn't show up for that episode, but he
- 12:03Speaker 2: did say.
- 12:04Speaker 3: I did, yep. Thank you.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Now, he didn't text me personally.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Follow up.
- 12:08Speaker 4: He called you Ray. I will definitely, I will make,
- 12:12Speaker 4: I will be on your show.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Oh, so you did that?
- 12:15Speaker 4: I will be on the show.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Truck broke.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Come on, don't do that.
- 12:17Speaker 2: He didn't do that.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I always tell people.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I don't see a text from Terry.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Look, if I tell you there's some cheese on the moon,
- 12:25Speaker 4: you better bring some crackers.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Okay, so your word is your bond. I can't wait
- 12:29Speaker 2: till they say cut and it's over and the show
- 12:32Speaker 2: is over. I'm going to take you in this room
- 12:34Speaker 2: over to the stage.
- 12:36Speaker 3: And do what y'all used to do.
- 12:38Speaker 5: So Fisk, what was it like going to this prestigious university?
- 12:42Speaker 2: HBCUs are absolutely a wonderful experience. This is a weird transition.
- 12:48Speaker 3: I just had to get over there.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Because, you know, my kids go to Howard. Oh, great.
- 12:53Speaker 3: And my daughter goes to Prairie View.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Really? Your daughter's old enough to go to college?
- 12:57Speaker 1: Yes.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Wow.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 13:00Speaker 3: And I know your brother went to Howard along with
- 13:02Speaker 3: our friend Buddy Lewis. That's right. Tell us a little
- 13:05Speaker 3: bit about the HBCU experience, you being a Delta. Yep.
- 13:08Speaker 2: I pledge that. That's right. Soar. All right.
- 13:11Speaker 3: I love you. My daughter wants to be one.
- 13:13Speaker 4: She wants to be one.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Tell her to call her stepmama. Her auntie. Her auntie Kim.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Just tell her to call her aunt Kim. You are
- 13:26Speaker 2: showing out.
- 13:28Speaker 3: I can't even.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Okay, you're showing out. Because I love the kids. So, pledging. Wait!
- 13:34Speaker 2: I can't even drink it. Oh, why did I decide
- 13:38Speaker 2: to go on the show?
- 13:40Speaker 3: Oh, my God. We have to build it.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Okay, yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 4: You saw our DST, all those good things.
- 13:46Speaker 3: So, boom, you pledged.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Fisk University, Alphabeta chapter. And this is what I tell people.
- 13:54Speaker 2: I didn't want to go to an HBCU. I didn't
- 13:57Speaker 2: know anything about it, but it was legacy. My whole
- 13:59Speaker 2: family went to Fisk. And they did my application, sent
- 14:04Speaker 2: it in. I didn't even do the application. Oh, wow.
- 14:06Speaker 2: And I remember in high school, because I grew up
- 14:10Speaker 2: in a Caucasian neighborhood.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Shaker Heights.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Shaker Heights. And I remember we were in the grocery store.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Sugar Heights?
- 14:18Speaker 2: A white neighborhood? Shaker Heights. Oh, Shaker Heights.
- 14:21Speaker 3: It's the suburb of Cleveland, correct?
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yes, Shaker Heights, Ohio. Because I got to relax.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm trying to figure out, like, Sugar, Shaker, Sugar Heights,
- 14:32Speaker 1: Shaker Heights.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Kim, come on, come on.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Come on.
- 14:35Speaker 2: You know my lips getting away. So, Shaker Heights, Ohio.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Oh.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Is a place in Cleveland, okay? So what happens in,
- 14:50Speaker 2: I was in the grocery store, and my mom and
- 14:54Speaker 2: one of my Caucasian friends' mothers was in the aisle,
- 14:58Speaker 2: and it was in 12th grade, and she said, Kim,
- 15:00Speaker 2: where are you going to school? And I thought my
- 15:02Speaker 2: mother was down the aisle. And I remember saying, Cornell!
- 15:06Speaker 2: Just yelled it on, because my brother was going to
- 15:08Speaker 2: go to Cornell. So I was like, Cornell! Now, my
- 15:10Speaker 2: black mama, she heard me. She said, no, she's not.
- 15:13Speaker 2: She's going to Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. And I
- 15:16Speaker 2: was like this. I was like, yep, I'm going to
- 15:18Speaker 2: go there, too. So I realized I was embarrassed. I thought,
- 15:23Speaker 2: you know, oh, I have to go. Yes.
- 15:26Speaker 3: You're going to a PWI high school.
- 15:28Speaker 2: You're going to a PWI college. College. And I remember
- 15:31Speaker 2: I said, no, your application's in. You're going to Fisk.
- 15:34Speaker 2: And let me tell you something. That's why parents are important.
- 15:37Speaker 3: They know. What you need.
- 15:39Speaker 2: What you need and where to go.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Not what you want.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Not what you want.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Were you a little whitewashed?
- 15:44Speaker 2: Yeah, a little bit. You know, a little bit. I
- 15:46Speaker 2: had that Cleveland shaker, you know. And just not knowing.
- 15:52Speaker 2: No one educated me on HBCUs. They never had taken
- 15:55Speaker 2: me down there. When I tell you they dropped me
- 15:57Speaker 2: off and I saw them when I graduated, I was like,
- 15:59Speaker 2: wait a minute. Wait a minute. But it's a mini,
- 16:06Speaker 2: you know, society. You learn everything, you know. So, but
- 16:11Speaker 2: I did, I learned about my heritage and my blackness. And,
- 16:15Speaker 2: you know, it was a school that we ran out
- 16:18Speaker 2: of heat at that, in this particular year. But I
- 16:23Speaker 2: loved it so much. I stayed there and I still
- 16:25Speaker 2: love Fisk University. You're talking about the heater broke. The
- 16:28Speaker 2: whole school didn't have heat. We were out there on
- 16:30Speaker 2: the corner with Kay. Because a lot of the HBCUs,
- 16:31Speaker 2: they're underfunded.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Yes.
- 16:33Speaker 2: If anybody knows Mackenzie Scott, she has given so much
- 16:36Speaker 2: money to HBCUs. Fisk University. I beg of you. She's
- 16:42Speaker 2: hit like, this year she might have hit 40 of them.
- 16:45Speaker 2: I was like, how many are there? She's given millions
- 16:46Speaker 2: and millions of dollars.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Millions of dollars.
- 16:48Speaker 1: She should get a BET award. She should get a
- 16:51Speaker 1: BET award. And to be honest, that's not even enough.
- 16:53Speaker 2: It's not.
- 16:54Speaker 4: They're still underfunded.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. And we think about people only know about,
- 16:59Speaker 2: you know, Howard, Spelman, Morehouse. They know about the big ones.
- 17:02Speaker 2: And a lot of those get state funding. But I
- 17:05Speaker 2: would just say it was a great experience. And I'm
- 17:07Speaker 2: so glad that your children are going. I'm going to
- 17:09Speaker 2: take Joshua. My son is 15.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Now I mean I saw.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I was gonna say I wish he was like to
- 17:15Speaker 2: put a football in his hand. Oh, okay, sorry See
- 17:21Speaker 2: I didn't know what I know now and I look
- 17:23Speaker 2: back and I see what the girls do now Oh,
- 17:24Speaker 2: I would have oops you do you understand? So what's
- 17:28Speaker 2: the definition of oops, you know, oh guess what? Oops
- 17:33Speaker 2: Oh Damn, I miss my period too far too much
- 17:40Speaker 2: no oh and his twins okay twins running my family
- 17:44Speaker 2: so but i didn't i was a good girl it
- 17:45Speaker 2: ain't too late that's the thing oh well jesus would
- 17:49Speaker 2: have to come down but and my son he need
- 17:52Speaker 2: another daddy he would love being your stepson right in
- 17:55Speaker 2: time for college.
- 17:58Speaker 4: And christmas college too late.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Oh damn you already got what you got one kid Hmm?
- 18:04Speaker 2: How many kids you got? I got, where you, yeah,
- 18:06Speaker 2: we lost touch. We did lose touch. Three girls, two boys.
- 18:10Speaker 2: You got that many children and you couldn't give me one?
- 18:12Speaker 4: All actresses too. I might have one overseas somewhere too.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Did you say I might have one overseas too? Use a,
- 18:19Speaker 2: use a, use a stingy ass.
- 18:22Speaker 3: Kim could have used one of them babies.
- 18:23Speaker 2: I could, I don't have nothing else to say. I'm
- 18:26Speaker 2: not even finishing the podcast.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Damn. So boom, you're at Fisk, you're gaining, you're gaining culture.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Let's talk about what year did you pledge? One baby.
- 18:38Speaker 4: She's stuck.
- 18:39Speaker 3: What year did you pledge, Kim?
- 18:40Speaker 2: I'm not, I don't give out years. Oh, what?
- 18:42Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 18:43Speaker 2: See, we had a girl break her arm on the campus.
- 18:48Speaker 2: They had kicked the Deltas off the campus.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Y'all were hazing?
- 18:52Speaker 2: You know, hazing back in the day was a thing.
- 18:54Speaker 2: It was pledging. It was real pledging. But what happened
- 18:56Speaker 2: was the Delta wasn't there, so then we had 60
- 18:59Speaker 2: girls on our line.
- 19:00Speaker 3: You're lying. In my senior year. Yeah.
- 19:04Speaker 2: That's a lot. I was like 53, number 53.
- 19:06Speaker 3: You were 53? And they go by height?
- 19:07Speaker 2: Yep. All these girls, there was 52 people.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Taller than you? Yes.
- 19:12Speaker 2: What? No, I was at the end.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Oh, taller. Got you, got you.
- 19:15Speaker 2: I was about to say. They was big, too. They
- 19:18Speaker 2: was taller than me.
- 19:18Speaker 3: I was like, hmm.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Those were at the end. But I was called dog. So,
- 19:21Speaker 2: you know, I was the one that did all the steps,
- 19:24Speaker 2: called them out.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Yeah, you look like you're a ringleader.
- 19:27Speaker 2: I am a ringleader. Oh, I wish I was more
- 19:29Speaker 2: mature back in the day.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, I was.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Nice girl.
- 19:33Speaker 3: But was it a great experience? Pledging?
- 19:35Speaker 2: I was. Pledging was fun. Yeah.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Do you still keep in contact with the community?
- 19:40Speaker 2: My line sisters, yes.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Oh, that's great. Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 19:44Speaker 2: That's what I'm trying to get my niece, and you
- 19:45Speaker 2: should encourage your children to. And let me tell you why.
- 19:50Speaker 2: It gives you friends for life. It gives you a
- 19:54Speaker 2: sense of community. My two nieces did not pledge. I
- 19:57Speaker 2: have since reached out, but I kind of blamed myself
- 20:01Speaker 2: that I didn't when they went to college. I said, hey,
- 20:04Speaker 2: the Deltas, one of their mothers, a.k.a., but Just to
- 20:08Speaker 2: get with a group of women or men, because later
- 20:11Speaker 2: I see my brother has his cues. Everyone has their group.
- 20:16Speaker 2: It gives you something later in life.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Brotherhood, sisterhood.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Look how deep Buddy is with the cues. That's what
- 20:21Speaker 2: I'm saying. My niece, she's a theater girl. She's an actress,
- 20:25Speaker 2: but she doesn't have that. I said, girl, you've got
- 20:26Speaker 2: to pledge now. Go to grad chat. So it was
- 20:30Speaker 2: a great experience. I'm glad you all asked that. No
- 20:32Speaker 2: one asked that question before. No, no, because my daughter's
- 20:35Speaker 2: in Howard. She's a sophomore. The Deltas have approached her Okay.
- 20:39Speaker 3: But I don't know.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Should I tell her about the broken arm incident? That
- 20:41Speaker 2: was at Fisk.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Okay.
- 20:44Speaker 2: It's different now.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I heard it's almost like you sign up now. Yeah,
- 20:47Speaker 3: it's different.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Nationals have gotten in there and been like, hey, we
- 20:51Speaker 2: don't do that.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 20:52Speaker 4: They've softened it up a little bit.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Yeah, you really have to talk to your children, boys
- 20:59Speaker 2: or girls. They're going to pledge, what are you going
- 21:02Speaker 2: to tolerate? See, I told, when I was pledging, even
- 21:06Speaker 2: when the AKs, because all my friends were AKs, and
- 21:08Speaker 2: they was like, come on, Kim. And I remember, Verl,
- 21:11Speaker 2: you know you was Evelyn on campus, that's what they
- 21:14Speaker 2: called her. And I was like, no, Verl's still here.
- 21:16Speaker 3: I'm not, I can't pledge with Verl. That's why you
- 21:18Speaker 3: became an AK.
- 21:18Speaker 2: No, because Verl, she had a reputation. And I told everyone,
- 21:22Speaker 2: I said, I will tell. I'm not going to write you.
- 21:28Speaker 2: They were like, what? Oh, I will call nationals. They're like, Kim,
- 21:31Speaker 2: you can't do that. immediately pull out a paddle make
- 21:38Speaker 2: me do something crazy hey hey nationals yeah yeah you
- 21:43Speaker 2: don't know me my name is kim whitley um they
- 21:45Speaker 2: down here whooping our ass huh yep right at this
- 21:49Speaker 2: all right click just sitting there whistling waiting waiting for
- 21:55Speaker 2: him oh i'm horrible i'm horrible Because I was.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Like, whoa.
- 21:59Speaker 2: My face hurts. Look at these kids. These kids have
- 22:02Speaker 2: died over drinking. They'll make you keep drinking and drinking.
- 22:06Speaker 2: You can't. Some people are paddling you. And these are
- 22:09Speaker 2: the boys and the girls. So as a child, you
- 22:12Speaker 2: talk to your child when they get ready to pledge.
- 22:13Speaker 4: They can go too far.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Yes.
- 22:15Speaker 2: And you can't let anyone go too far. Right.
- 22:19Speaker 1: And they don't know what's too far for somebody, for
- 22:22Speaker 1: an individual.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:23Speaker 5: Somebody just died recently. We don't have to get into
- 22:25Speaker 5: all that. OK, yeah, because I thought all the pledge.
- 22:28Speaker 5: I mean, I guess there's still some chapters that are
- 22:31Speaker 5: still hazing.
- 22:33Speaker 2: And that is a problem. And nationals is all over that.
- 22:37Speaker 2: But that's something that, you know, since you all have
- 22:39Speaker 2: children are interested in it and you should let them
- 22:41Speaker 2: talk to other like if your daughter is.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Listen, Vanessa brought your name up immediately.
- 22:46Speaker 2: OK, I was going to say, yeah, she needs to
- 22:48Speaker 2: talk to me. I'll be in D.C. Actually, I'm going
- 22:51Speaker 2: Sunday for the Delta. We have a little special committee.
- 22:53Speaker 5: Won't you come the day before? I'm hosting an influencer's brunch.
- 22:57Speaker 5: I got Jasmine Crockett. I got Ben Crump. I got,
- 23:02Speaker 5: you know, I do the brunch I usually do for
- 23:03Speaker 5: doing the Oscars. We're doing it for the.
- 23:06Speaker 3: CBC, Congressional Black Caucus.
- 23:07Speaker 2: That's right.
- 23:08Speaker 5: And then I'm also doing five like lawmakers. And then
- 23:10Speaker 5: the second half is going to be Emi Atsi Kroyanaldi.
- 23:13Speaker 5: Is that how you say it? And Morris Chestnut because
- 23:16Speaker 5: they have their show, Reasonable Doubt, where they play attorneys.
- 23:18Speaker 5: So we're going to talk about the law with the
- 23:20Speaker 5: real law, and then we're going to talk to the
- 23:21Speaker 5: law with the fake law.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Okay, I'm going to see if I can change. I
- 23:23Speaker 2: would love to come to that.

- 24:30Speaker 1: Question so how did you because you know there's i
- 24:33Speaker 1: don't say stereotype but it's a look for akas and
- 24:37Speaker 1: deltas you know you your light skin, nine times 10,
- 24:40Speaker 1: you're an AKA.
- 24:42Speaker 4: How did you decipher between the two?
- 24:45Speaker 2: Pearl did that.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Well, you know what? They, they, they are, they do
- 24:49Speaker 2: say that, but I also believe it's energy because in
- 24:53Speaker 2: the Divine Nine, they're all different colors. It's a sisterhood
- 24:57Speaker 2: at the end of the day. But I also believe
- 24:59Speaker 2: it's energy. I am not, I crack up my girlfriends.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I was like, girl, are you an AKA material? The Pearls,
- 25:08Speaker 2: Kim Whitley? No. I knew then. I was like, that's
- 25:11Speaker 2: how y'all dressing. That was not. They doing all, you know, that.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Do it again. You know, Julie's daughter just went. Yes. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Anna Grace is. Okay. But I feel like you have
- 25:33Speaker 2: to go with who you feel. And when they approach you,
- 25:36Speaker 2: You need to go to the rushes because you have
- 25:38Speaker 2: to see who you fit with. Say you go sit
- 25:41Speaker 2: out in the rush and you look at all these
- 25:42Speaker 2: girls and they're actually either hating on you or, you know,
- 25:45Speaker 2: or mean mugging you. Like, what are these helpless? They're
- 25:48Speaker 2: going to be my line sisters. Or they're, hey, girl,
- 25:51Speaker 2: and you feel that energy. That's who you go with.
- 25:54Speaker 2: And that's the sisterhood. And my aunts are AKAs. And
- 26:00Speaker 2: I went Delta because of.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Yeah, that's how me and Chris got this because it
- 26:04Speaker 1: was like. You know, me, Jamie Foxx, and, you know, Chappelle.
- 26:08Speaker 1: I had a couple of people to go, but it
- 26:10Speaker 1: was that energy me and Chris, you know, brought to
- 26:13Speaker 1: this show. So, you know, Chris, it's that energy.
- 26:17Speaker 2: David Chappelle and Jamie Foxx? Yeah, yeah.
- 26:19Speaker 3: I had an opportunity, but I... Well, they put us
- 26:22Speaker 3: in separate rooms, right? They asked me who I wanted.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Is this real or y'all playing?
- 26:27Speaker 3: I said Randy Moss.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Okay, I was going to say, okay. I was going
- 26:31Speaker 2: to say.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Santana.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Okay, because I was going to say David Chappelle and.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I just chose energy.
- 26:36Speaker 2: You should have called me.
- 26:37Speaker 3: That's what you just said.
- 26:38Speaker 4: So the energy is not true?
- 26:40Speaker 2: Not with Christmas. Oh, I'm right here. Oh, okay.
- 26:47Speaker 5: Let's talk about the entertainment industry and how you got
- 26:50Speaker 5: into it.
- 26:50Speaker 2: That is true. When I heard you two, I was
- 26:53Speaker 2: like this. Okay, opposites attract. I thought it was cute.
- 26:56Speaker 3: But you don't really know it.
- 26:57Speaker 2: We're not even opposite.
- 26:58Speaker 3: I knew Braces Terrell, too.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Oh, you did?
- 27:02Speaker 3: Terrell, yes.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Terrell.
- 27:03Speaker 3: You got me saying Terrell because you said earlier. I
- 27:05Speaker 3: knew Braces Terrell, too.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 27:07Speaker 3: And so, yeah, we go back. Around the same, really,
- 27:10Speaker 3: around the same time. Oh, okay.
- 27:12Speaker 2: I just did, you know whose podcast I just did?
- 27:14Speaker 2: And it was really good. Kid Cudi.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Really?
- 27:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I really enjoyed. So me, him, and Kanye are
- 27:20Speaker 2: going to go out and have dinner. because me and
- 27:22Speaker 2: Kanye used to be real tight and kidding him tight.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Not like how tight?
- 27:27Speaker 2: No, not our tight.
- 27:28Speaker 3: More auntie.
- 27:29Speaker 2: I played his mother. Yeah, no. Not too many people
- 27:33Speaker 2: got what you got. I played Kanye's mama.
- 27:39Speaker 3: Yo, this is crazy.
- 27:41Speaker 2: I'm glad the fan is on up in here. Turn
- 27:45Speaker 2: it on me. I played Kanye's mama on the HBO show.
- 27:52Speaker 2: We did a pilot together. So I had to hang
- 27:54Speaker 2: out with his mom and get to know her. That's
- 27:56Speaker 2: when he was dating Amber Rose. But that was my
- 27:59Speaker 2: little nephew. Like we were cool. And then, you know,
- 28:03Speaker 2: life happens just like you. Life happens.
- 28:06Speaker 3: He had braces too. No, his mouth was wired.
- 28:08Speaker 2: I'm not good at keeping in touch. A lot of
- 28:10Speaker 2: it's my fault. I don't call people. So did acting
- 28:14Speaker 2: bring you to Los Angeles? Yes.
- 28:17Speaker 3: A play, a commercial, a movie?
- 28:19Speaker 2: I know you want me to say a pimp robbed me,
- 28:21Speaker 2: but that's not what happened. I wasn't on the Greyhound bus,
- 28:25Speaker 2: got off. Right, right. No, you know, once I went
- 28:32Speaker 2: to college, my parents said, once you get your degree,
- 28:34Speaker 2: you can do what you want to do. That was
- 28:36Speaker 2: their only thing.
- 28:37Speaker 3: And what was your degree in?
- 28:38Speaker 2: My degree was in art and business administration with a
- 28:42Speaker 2: minor in theater.
- 28:43Speaker 3: So that's where the theater background came from.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Yeah, but I used to paint, sculpt, all those things.
- 28:48Speaker 2: If you ever come to my house, Chris, you'll see.
- 28:49Speaker 2: I've been to your house. Oh, you ever go through
- 28:52Speaker 2: the front door and see all the paintings?
- 28:53Speaker 3: No, you made us go to the back. I did.
- 28:54Speaker 2: You're right. Okay, that was good, Chris. Good comeback. My
- 28:59Speaker 2: mother said I can do that. So I said, I
- 29:01Speaker 2: went to New York first, then I went to L.A.,
- 29:03Speaker 2: and I said, where am I going to fit best?
- 29:05Speaker 2: Like you said, that energy. New York, I was like, ooh,
- 29:07Speaker 2: I ain't going to make it here. It just seemed too.
- 29:09Speaker 2: And I went to L.A., I was like, oh, everybody
- 29:11Speaker 2: laid back. This is great. No suits, just chill. And
- 29:14Speaker 2: so I came out to Los Angeles and My father
- 29:16Speaker 2: came with me and I found the Negro Theater Ensemble Company.
- 29:21Speaker 3: That was in it.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Like we talk about pledging. When you find your group,
- 29:26Speaker 2: found this group of black actors and just started. And
- 29:31Speaker 2: then I got on Soul Train. Yeah, Loretta Shelby, look
- 29:35Speaker 2: at you. That's me and Buddy's first play. And Junie Smith.
- 29:37Speaker 3: Yes.
- 29:38Speaker 2: And Nima Barnett's husband. Oh, my God. He would kill me.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Mr. Barnett.
- 29:42Speaker 2: No. He is not a Mr. Barnett. Reed McCants.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Yes.
- 29:47Speaker 2: These were our teachers. And I'll never forget.
- 29:49Speaker 3: You know one thing?
- 29:49Speaker 2: And I've never said this on a podcast. We were
- 29:51Speaker 2: already on an interview. I'll never forget the one thing
- 29:54Speaker 2: these black men said as a young actress. And I
- 29:58Speaker 2: was like, they're so... They sold 1970, they sold Soul Brother.
- 30:02Speaker 2: They said, ladies, the first thing I want to teach
- 30:04Speaker 2: you is don't give up your womb for this industry.
- 30:11Speaker 2: First of all, they should have used another kind of
- 30:12Speaker 2: language because when they used the word womb, I was like,
- 30:15Speaker 2: you're uncomfortable because of this. I was like, your womb?
- 30:18Speaker 3: Sounds like a baby.
- 30:19Speaker 2: But that's what he was saying. He said, ladies, he said,
- 30:22Speaker 2: because they were older than us, they said a lot
- 30:24Speaker 2: of women don't get to have children because they're so
- 30:27Speaker 2: worried about about making it in this industry, and then
- 30:31Speaker 2: they get too.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Old to have. Without living a life. And the words
- 30:34Speaker 3: of Scarface, your womb is so polluted.
- 30:39Speaker 2: They weren't. Nobody was polluted. He didn't.
- 30:44Speaker 3: Continue.
- 30:44Speaker 4: Yeah, Chris, he just.
- 30:46Speaker 2: I see why you're on here, to keep him straight.
- 30:48Speaker 2: You're the brains of the operation.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Man, somebody got to do this shit.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Who the fuck was that?
- 30:55Speaker 3: Stay on track.
- 30:56Speaker 2: I can't.
- 30:57Speaker 3: I'm trying to make it funny because you motherfuckers.
- 31:01Speaker 2: It's hot in here because of y'all.
- 31:02Speaker 3: I ain't never felt energy from somebody else. Stay on track, man.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Stay on track. So, boom, you come out here. Yeah,
- 31:08Speaker 3: you said teacher. You mentioned teachers.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Yes.
- 31:11Speaker 4: You once was a teacher.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Yes, so in order to support myself out here. You
- 31:16Speaker 2: were a teacher? Yeah, in Compton. Hey, Compton. Yeah, and
- 31:20Speaker 2: all the Compton. I was a substitute teacher. But I
- 31:23Speaker 2: became friends with all the principals, so they called me direct,
- 31:26Speaker 2: and they called me the general.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Oh.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Can't talk about that without getting arrested. But they would
- 31:33Speaker 2: call me when they had a hard class, and then
- 31:35Speaker 2: I got a class for a year.
- 31:36Speaker 3: What was the word you used?
- 31:38Speaker 2: Hard, difficult children. Difficult.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Got you.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Yes. They would call the general. And let me say always.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Do we have commercials on this show? Oh, shit.
- 31:59Speaker 3: That's what she said.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Let's go back to the teaching. Teaching. So they would
- 32:04Speaker 2: call me and say, three substitute teachers have left. Can
- 32:08Speaker 2: you please come in?
- 32:11Speaker 3: The kids loved you, huh?
- 32:12Speaker 2: Yeah, had a good time.
- 32:14Speaker 4: You know what it's like when you got a substitute teacher?
- 32:16Speaker 3: Fine and funny. Man, that was like the best days. Yes.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Yeah, so that really helped me to support myself. And
- 32:25Speaker 2: then I lived behind the Crenshaw YMCA, and you know
- 32:27Speaker 2: Cynthia was running the Y. That's how we became friends.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Cynthia Boutte was running the Y. So I went over
- 32:33Speaker 2: there and said, can I get a job? And then
- 32:36Speaker 2: I started working at the Y, and there we go.
- 32:39Speaker 3: And then what did, like, Beauty Shop happened.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Oh, while I was in my one efficiency behind the Y,
- 32:47Speaker 2: KJLH had the commercial on. Beauty Shop! You know, all this.
- 32:52Speaker 2: I was like, I've never heard of it.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Tell everybody what that is.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Oh, Beauty Shop is one of the first African American plays.
- 32:58Speaker 3: This is way before Tyler Perry.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Way before Tyler Perry. Tyler Perry used to come and
- 33:02Speaker 2: watch us sit in the back and watch. We remember
- 33:05Speaker 2: meeting Tyler Perry back then. And, you know, it's amazing
- 33:10Speaker 2: how He sat and watched. And I don't know if
- 33:12Speaker 2: he was homeless then or what he was doing.
- 33:14Speaker 3: You remember seeing him?
- 33:16Speaker 2: Yep. Tyler Perry and Shelly Garrett. And he would just come.
- 33:19Speaker 2: And I guess he was learning. He was taking notes.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Taking notes.
- 33:22Speaker 4: He was taking notes.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Which is amazing because I should have been taking notes. Right.
- 33:27Speaker 2: I'm in the show.
- 33:28Speaker 3: Everything but.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Everything but. Tyler was a visionary. And he saw what
- 33:34Speaker 2: Shelly had started. And this play went across the country
- 33:38Speaker 2: and made millions. We had lines wrapped around theaters because
- 33:45Speaker 2: it was the first time, it was a marketing genius.
- 33:49Speaker 2: No one ever advertised a play like that on radio.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it was advertised better than a movie.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Better than a movie. And word of mouth, Shelly always
- 34:00Speaker 2: told me, word of mouth is what makes it. And
- 34:02Speaker 2: we made so much money. Wendy Raquel Robinson started then.
- 34:06Speaker 2: We were all together. Who else? Green Mile, Michael Clark Duncan.
- 34:12Speaker 3: He was in that?
- 34:12Speaker 2: He was our security. Yes. Michael's another person. God rest
- 34:18Speaker 2: his soul. Need to say thank you. Not like that,
- 34:21Speaker 2: but Michael would ask me how do I, when he got,
- 34:25Speaker 2: was it the Green Mile the first thing or something else?
- 34:27Speaker 2: But he called me, but he was like, Cameron, I
- 34:29Speaker 2: ain't never done this. You know, come on. But you
- 34:31Speaker 2: look at people and then all of a sudden you're like,
- 34:33Speaker 2: but he kept in touch. Yeah. And then he dated
- 34:37Speaker 2: my good friend Omarosa. So it was a lot, you know,
- 34:39Speaker 2: it's a family. So, you know, we look at this,
- 34:44Speaker 2: but Shelly Garrett, that's what we got. That was our education.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Think about that. That was our college education for acting
- 34:51Speaker 2: and theater. And it was great.
- 34:54Speaker 3: No better school than to be on stage.
- 34:56Speaker 2: No better school.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Because there is no cut. You forget your line, you're
- 35:00Speaker 3: going to have to figure out something right there.
- 35:02Speaker 2: You better figure it out. And was a great educator.
- 35:05Speaker 2: When I tell you what I learned, Chris, you're just
- 35:08Speaker 2: like me. I didn't know what upstaging was. And now
- 35:13Speaker 2: I know, of course. But I cut a fool. They
- 35:17Speaker 2: all hated me. Every last person. Because they're doing their lines.
- 35:24Speaker 2: I'm over there on the couch cutting up all. I
- 35:26Speaker 2: have pulled all the audience over here. Rude. But when
- 35:31Speaker 2: you're young and hungry. I was excited. And then Shelly said,
- 35:38Speaker 2: can you direct my next play? Can you be, because I,
- 35:42Speaker 2: how I got, there's a lot of stories. How I
- 35:44Speaker 2: got on the show, I was an understudy because I
- 35:47Speaker 2: went to Shelly. Oh, I've missed the whole thing. After
- 35:50Speaker 2: I heard it on the radio, I went to the play.
- 35:52Speaker 2: I waited for him. And I said, how can I
- 35:53Speaker 2: be a part of this production? I will sweep the floors.
- 35:56Speaker 2: I will be an understudy. Costumes. He said, just, you
- 36:00Speaker 2: can audition. We're doing understudies. Me and Kim Brooks We
- 36:03Speaker 2: became really good friends. Kim Brooks. We became really good friends.
- 36:06Speaker 2: We sat on the side of that stage watching every night.
- 36:09Speaker 2: And I was like, who going to get sick? Who
- 36:11Speaker 2: going to get sick? Just waiting. I was like, I
- 36:13Speaker 2: got to go in. I got to get in. Whose
- 36:14Speaker 2: luggage can I put cocaine in? You ain't never been
- 36:16Speaker 2: on the sidelines. We on the sidelines waiting.
- 36:18Speaker 3: I've been on the sidelines. I've been there.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Did you have that feeling that you wanted to get in?
- 36:23Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Plenty of times.
- 36:25Speaker 4: I'm listening to you.
- 36:26Speaker 1: There are some parallels to what you're saying in your
- 36:28Speaker 1: industry to what I had to do when I was
- 36:30Speaker 1: in high school, college, watching people play. knowing that inside
- 36:34Speaker 1: you have the ability to play, but you're being judged
- 36:38Speaker 1: and evaluated by people that really know the business, know
- 36:41Speaker 1: the industry. Until I actually got my opportunity and chance,
- 36:46Speaker 1: I just had to sit there and just wait.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Be patient. Had to sit there and wait. Well, I
- 36:50Speaker 2: wasn't as patient or as athletic, so what I did
- 36:54Speaker 2: was I went to.
- 36:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I can't just... I couldn't just put myself in
- 36:59Speaker 3: the game.
- 37:00Speaker 2: No, no, no. I went... Behind everybody's back. Not even
- 37:03Speaker 2: behind their back. I went straight to Shelly Garrett and said,
- 37:05Speaker 2: can I talk to you? I said, I've created a
- 37:09Speaker 2: character for your play.
- 37:11Speaker 3: You're lying. I sure did.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I said, you know what you don't have in your play?
- 37:15Speaker 2: He said, what? I said, you don't have a church lady.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Church ladies, they come to the beauty shop. He did
- 37:22Speaker 2: like this. He said, you're absolutely right. I said, that's
- 37:27Speaker 2: how I can, you know, I can be the church lady.
- 37:29Speaker 2: And I did a little church lady for him. Next week,
- 37:32Speaker 2: I was on stage as Sister Rosemary.
- 37:34Speaker 3: No freaking way.
- 37:35Speaker 2: The cast was like, I'm still looking at Kim sitting
- 37:37Speaker 2: on the other side. I was like this.
- 37:40Speaker 4: Girl, hush your mouth.
- 37:41Speaker 5: She's still on the side waiting on her chance to
- 37:44Speaker 5: come in.
- 37:46Speaker 2: And then she got in. And we traveled and Sister
- 37:50Speaker 2: Rosemary cut up. We were so crazy.
- 37:53Speaker 3: Was it all getting bigger and bigger and bigger?
- 37:55Speaker 2: It was out of control.
- 37:57Speaker 3: They hated you.
- 37:58Speaker 2: They hated me. And then Shelly said, I got a
- 38:01Speaker 2: show called Living Room. I'm going to give it to
- 38:04Speaker 2: you to take on the road. And that's where I
- 38:08Speaker 2: was talking about where I missed my opportunity. He made
- 38:10Speaker 2: me a Tyler Perry. Right.
- 38:12Speaker 3: But you're like, I want to be in front of
- 38:13Speaker 3: the camera. I want to be on stage.
- 38:15Speaker 2: I'm a talent. I had the same thing happen to me.
- 38:17Speaker 3: When I was working on.
- 38:19Speaker 5: I was Martin's stand-in, nobody believes me, during the presentation
- 38:23Speaker 5: and the pilot. And I went into the room with
- 38:25Speaker 5: John Bowman, God rest his soul.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 38:28Speaker 5: And Bentley was a writer, young writer. And I started
- 38:30Speaker 5: playing with this, you know, writing. And he was like, yo,
- 38:33Speaker 5: why don't you be a writer?
- 38:34Speaker 3: I was like, writer? I am an actor.
- 38:37Speaker 2: That is so crazy.
- 38:40Speaker 5: And then I saw Bentley's House and I was like, fuck!
- 38:43Speaker 5: Bentley's House is like the whole.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Right, it made you go... Same thing. I was like, oh,
- 38:49Speaker 2: that could have been me.
- 38:50Speaker 3: And now we're writing to catch up right now.
- 38:52Speaker 2: We're trying to catch up, right. But God, you know,
- 38:54Speaker 2: has a plan. That was... Tyler's lane, but I could
- 38:57Speaker 2: have been Jakarius. I could have, you know, kept going.
- 39:00Speaker 2: I saw it. I saw everything from the box office
- 39:02Speaker 2: to casting. I knew how to do it. So you
- 39:04Speaker 2: let me take the, I took the living room and
- 39:07Speaker 2: Wendy was one of my actors, Wendy Raquel Robinson. And
- 39:12Speaker 2: I was the boss. And what I didn't understand was
- 39:15Speaker 2: why are these people not listening to me? I was like,
- 39:19Speaker 2: they were my peers. He didn't come with me. I'm
- 39:22Speaker 2: on the road running it. Okay.
- 39:26Speaker 3: I've never heard this story.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Yeah. So it was very.
- 39:29Speaker 3: So it's hard to tell Wendy. Come on, speed it up.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Yeah, Wendy was respectful, you know, but it was hard.
- 39:36Speaker 2: The men.
- 39:38Speaker 3: Forget about it.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Forget about it. And then I was like, I will
- 39:41Speaker 2: have you replaced. because Shelly gave me the power to
- 39:44Speaker 2: say that. Because you know, I ran at night. It
- 39:46Speaker 2: was like, they're not listening. They're not listening.
- 39:49Speaker 3: Okay, because you was snitch.
- 39:51Speaker 2: I forgot I was a snitch. I remember I was right.
- 39:53Speaker 2: I was a snitch. Oh, I'll tell in a minute.
- 39:54Speaker 2: My brothers, that's what they call me. I'm not going
- 39:57Speaker 2: to tell you what they really call me, but that's
- 39:58Speaker 2: what they call me, Boss Moss. Yeah.
- 40:01Speaker 1: So Kim, tell us, you go from teacher Kim, actress Kim,
- 40:08Speaker 1: to comedian Kim. Where does that, how does that transition?
- 40:13Speaker 1: And what I've learned, Red Fox gave you some encouragement
- 40:19Speaker 1: to go into that space.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Yeah. And that's why you, I tell people I'm tired now,
- 40:25Speaker 2: but because I'm tired, like the networking and going out
- 40:29Speaker 2: and being, just meeting people. You have to be in
- 40:32Speaker 2: the world. You have to be in the world too.
- 40:35Speaker 2: And I was on the set of Harlem Nights. that movie.
- 40:41Speaker 2: And my friend from the Negro Ensemble, Desi Arnaz, his
- 40:46Speaker 2: name was, black guy, his son was Desi Arnaz Jr.
- 40:51Speaker 2: And he auditioned for the little boy in the movie. Well,
- 40:55Speaker 2: Desi had to go to work. He called me and said, Kim,
- 40:56Speaker 2: can you take him to the set? I was like, yeah,
- 41:00Speaker 2: I'll take him to the set. So people have heard
- 41:02Speaker 2: this story, but it's the truth. You know, I'm still, remember,
- 41:06Speaker 2: I'm that hungry girl who wrote the part and was
- 41:08Speaker 2: like here. So I'm walking around. I'm like this. The
- 41:11Speaker 2: little boy, I don't know where he is supposed to
- 41:12Speaker 2: be watching. I don't know where that little boy is.
- 41:14Speaker 3: You know, brought him to the set and he just.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Hey, he be in his dressing room with the teacher.
- 41:18Speaker 2: He on his own. I'm walking around looking for opportunity.
- 41:22Speaker 2: And I go around a corner just being nosy. And
- 41:26Speaker 2: in those director chairs is Red Fox, Richard Pryor. Eddie Murphy,
- 41:36Speaker 2: and standing up was Renaud Duret talking. He just back
- 41:41Speaker 2: there kicking it. Of course, I walk around the corner,
- 41:43Speaker 2: and I'm like, and you know how those sets were built?
- 41:45Speaker 2: You can't, you know, a movie set inside of a studio.
- 41:50Speaker 2: It's just walls.
- 41:51Speaker 3: You always feel like you in the way.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Yes, always. So they were around this corner, and I couldn't,
- 41:56Speaker 2: there's nowhere to go. You couldn't keep walking. And, you know,
- 42:02Speaker 2: I was like, hey, But Ronaldo Ray, rest in power,
- 42:07Speaker 2: with his smart mouth, said, ha, you know, he said, oh, girl,
- 42:13Speaker 2: you looking for a seat? I was like, yeah, no,
- 42:14Speaker 2: I'm good. He said, well, as long as I got
- 42:17Speaker 2: a face, you got somewhere to sit. So the boys laugh, but.
- 42:23Speaker 3: You can't do that in 2026.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Right. You can't do that now.
- 42:26Speaker 3: You ain't lying. Snitch kid would have been.
- 42:28Speaker 2: That is true. Oh, snitch kid would have been like,
- 42:31Speaker 2: standards in practice? No.
- 42:32Speaker 5: Ha, ha, ha.
- 42:35Speaker 2: H.R., not knowing who I am, who I know as
- 42:40Speaker 2: a comic today, and I say this because Chris is
- 42:43Speaker 2: here and we mirror each other and he knows who
- 42:46Speaker 2: I am as a comic. Immediately, I said, well, as
- 42:51Speaker 2: long as you got a face like that, I guess
- 42:53Speaker 2: I'll be standing.
- 42:53Speaker 3: I told you she quick. I told y'all she quick.
- 42:58Speaker 2: Whoa. Why I say that? My heart immediately, because. These
- 43:04Speaker 2: are legends. Red Fox fell out. Richard Pryor spit his coffee.
- 43:12Speaker 2: One of them just, and they cracking up. And I
- 43:15Speaker 2: could see Ronaldo's face. He was not laughing. My heart
- 43:20Speaker 2: was like this. You know, because it's almost, you know,
- 43:24Speaker 2: in comics, They tried to bag, and you bagged back.
- 43:29Speaker 2: They weren't ready for the girl to come around the corner.
- 43:32Speaker 4: They weren't ready for that comeback.
- 43:34Speaker 3: And you're like in your 20s. These are fucking legends. 50s, 60s.
- 43:38Speaker 2: And Red Fox called me over, and he said, do
- 43:42Speaker 2: you do stand-up? And I said, no. And by that time,
- 43:45Speaker 2: I had a little notepad. I said, I've started writing
- 43:47Speaker 2: some jokes down. And he said, now why he say this?
- 43:53Speaker 3: If he ever needs somewhere to sit.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Right, I know he did. He did. He said, get
- 43:57Speaker 2: 10 minutes together and I'll help you. Well, you know
- 44:00Speaker 2: what 10 minutes is?
- 44:02Speaker 3: Back then?
- 44:03Speaker 2: Just, and I was like this, okay. He said, I'm
- 44:06Speaker 2: tired of seeing these ugly bitches be funny. I'll never
- 44:10Speaker 2: forget it. He said, you're cute and you're funny. He said,
- 44:14Speaker 2: I'm going to help you. And one of the biggest
- 44:16Speaker 2: mistakes of my life, I was like, my mother told me,
- 44:20Speaker 2: be careful in Hollywood. Because of sex, drugs, and rock
- 44:24Speaker 2: and roll. And I was like, my mother, she said
- 44:28Speaker 2: it to me every night. So I, excuse me, I
- 44:31Speaker 2: was looking at Red Fox. I was like, he going
- 44:33Speaker 2: to have me in a pile of cocaine. Just scared.
- 44:39Speaker 2: I didn't have a mentor. Had nobody to, I knew
- 44:43Speaker 2: no comics. One of my friends were comedians.
- 44:47Speaker 3: At that time.
- 44:49Speaker 4: You were thrown into the fire.
- 44:52Speaker 2: God was like, here you go.
- 44:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:53Speaker 2: And I could have been with Red Fox tomorrow. Uh-huh.
- 44:56Speaker 2: But I might have been, I might have been, okay.
- 44:59Speaker 2: My mother told me about this. But no telling where
- 45:02Speaker 2: I'd be right now.
- 45:03Speaker 3: So you didn't put the 10 minutes together back then?
- 45:05Speaker 2: Nope.
- 45:06Speaker 3: So how many years later was it before you actually
- 45:08Speaker 3: got on stage?
- 45:10Speaker 2: The night he died.
- 45:12Speaker 3: Don't make me cry.
- 45:13Speaker 2: I couldn't, I went out. to the world stage in
- 45:19Speaker 2: Leimert Park. And I, oh, I'm going to need a
- 45:23Speaker 2: tissue too. And I did my first two minutes. And
- 45:28Speaker 2: I did. I was like, ah, yeah.
- 45:32Speaker 4: I did.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Because I felt like I missed an opportunity.
- 45:37Speaker 3: Why am I crying?
- 45:39Speaker 2: Because we love each other. And you looked at little
- 45:41Speaker 2: Kim and you felt bad for her. He was like, Kim,
- 45:44Speaker 2: we both could be further if you'd have just given
- 45:46Speaker 2: Redbox some ass.
- 45:49Speaker 3: Kim.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Oh, God. Oh, my God. I don't know why I
- 45:58Speaker 2: agreed to come on here.
- 45:59Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh.
- 46:01Speaker 2: This is out of control. I always feel like I
- 46:04Speaker 2: talk too much. Now they're going to have clips of
- 46:05Speaker 2: me everywhere. And they're going to be talking about me
- 46:08Speaker 2: and T.O. And be like, this is a lie. Then
- 46:09Speaker 2: we got to fight against it. I got to see
- 46:11Speaker 2: this podcast before it come out. I have not signed
- 46:14Speaker 2: any paperwork. Everybody's like, I knew it was something with
- 46:17Speaker 2: that T.O. I knew it was something. I knew it
- 46:19Speaker 2: was some shit he wasn't telling us. That's all right.
- 46:21Speaker 2: It's going to make your rap go up and mine.
- 46:23Speaker 3: It's all good. It's all good. One of the next
- 46:26Speaker 3: war shows we're going to.
- 46:27Speaker 2: Okay, boom. We need you on the carpet. Yes, you can. Oh,
- 46:30Speaker 2: you don't even understand.
- 46:31Speaker 3: This is good.
- 46:32Speaker 2: This is good medicine for me. Because you don't talk
- 46:35Speaker 2: about these things.
- 46:36Speaker 3: If I were to get red box of ass, please.
- 46:40Speaker 3: Just go together.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Oh, man. That is if I would have given.
- 46:47Speaker 3: If I would have gave red box of ass.
- 46:50Speaker 2: Me and Chris would be further along. Me and Chris. Yeah,
- 46:54Speaker 2: we'll be further along in this traffic. Me and Chris
- 46:58Speaker 2: would have houses like Bentley. Y'all are wild. Oh, God, wait.
- 47:04Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 47:05Speaker 2: I can't breathe. Who asked me to be on this?
- 47:07Speaker 2: Why did somebody bring this up?
- 47:08Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Shit.
- 47:10Speaker 3: Y'all got the back of my head hurting. I've never
- 47:13Speaker 3: had my ears hurt.
- 47:14Speaker 1: I've been smiling and cheating since I think I walked
- 47:17Speaker 1: through the door.
- 47:18Speaker 2: No, this is good. This is good. You know why
- 47:20Speaker 2: it's this good? It feels like friends just talking. You know,
- 47:23Speaker 2: it's good for me. I enjoy you bringing up the
- 47:26Speaker 2: past because I don't ever, I talk about some things,
- 47:29Speaker 2: but not like this because I know Chris so well
- 47:32Speaker 2: and he's so ignorant and he appreciates the dumb jokes.
- 47:35Speaker 2: If it was just me and you, I'll be over
- 47:37Speaker 2: here trying to be cute, not all crazy, and be like,
- 47:39Speaker 2: and then I'll be a little bitter, all that.
- 47:42Speaker 5: But.
- 47:43Speaker 2: You know what else is about to make me cry?
- 47:49Speaker 2: We've been trying to do this for years.
- 47:50Speaker 3: You know what else is about to make me cry?
- 47:52Speaker 2: Oh, God, don't.
- 47:52Speaker 5: Is listening to you and then me responding to you.
- 47:58Speaker 5: We shared a best friend named David Arnold who passed
- 48:00Speaker 5: away four years ago. And you say stuff. Just like him.
- 48:04Speaker 5: And I saw my special and I see me saying stuff.
- 48:07Speaker 2: You see it?
- 48:07Speaker 3: Just like him. And I'm like, he's in us. You
- 48:11Speaker 3: know what I mean?
- 48:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:12Speaker 3: Not like how you were in her. But like.
- 48:14Speaker 2: First of all, that is not.
- 48:16Speaker 3: That is not. That's not a fact.
- 48:17Speaker 2: That's not a fact.
- 48:18Speaker 3: I'm not talking about sexually. I'm talking about in terms of. Yes.
- 48:21Speaker 2: We're into each other. Figuratively. Figuratively.
- 48:23Speaker 3: Figuratively.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Thank you for the big word.
- 48:25Speaker 3: Figuratively. Okay.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Yes.
- 48:27Speaker 3: Not literally. So listening to you talk and say stuff
- 48:29Speaker 3: is just like.
- 48:31Speaker 2: David. David, all, I say it all the time. You know,
- 48:36Speaker 2: get you, because, you know, you say things like, get
- 48:39Speaker 2: this thing called a family.
- 48:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 48:41Speaker 2: You know, it ain't for the weak.
- 48:43Speaker 3: It ain't for the weak.
- 48:44Speaker 2: All those things. Sometimes you're the bug, sometimes you're the windshield.
- 48:48Speaker 3: Oh, you're about to make me cry.
- 48:50Speaker 7: Oh, God.
- 48:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 48:51Speaker 3: That was good. Kim.
- 48:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 48:54Speaker 3: We were in Africa a couple years ago.
- 48:55Speaker 2: That's right.
- 48:56Speaker 3: And you had a guy. Yes. It's usually your type,
- 48:58Speaker 3: like an ex-football guy.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Just athletic.
- 49:04Speaker 3: But it's always a dude that look like he didn't
- 49:06Speaker 3: make it.
- 49:08Speaker 2: No, that's a lie.
- 49:09Speaker 3: Don't listen. Don't listen to him. He's a practice squad nigga.
- 49:13Speaker 3: It's okay. I was the only one.
- 49:15Speaker 2: He's a practice squad nigga. Great looking guys. Handsome.
- 49:18Speaker 4: I got a reputation.
- 49:19Speaker 3: But you can't cute.
- 49:19Speaker 2: No.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Google them.
- 49:21Speaker 2: You can't Google them.
- 49:22Speaker 3: No known searches.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Don't listen to him. Don't listen to him.
- 49:25Speaker 3: Don't listen to him. But all great guys. But these
- 49:28Speaker 3: are ABAs and CFLs.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Hey.
- 49:29Speaker 3: They made a living.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Sometimes you the bug, sometimes you the bitch.
- 49:35Speaker 5: Sometimes you the bug, sometimes you the bitch.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Sometimes you the bitch, yeah.
- 49:40Speaker 3: Sometimes you're a starter, and sometimes you get in the
- 49:42Speaker 3: starter's water.
- 49:43Speaker 2: It don't matter.
- 49:44Speaker 3: Nonetheless. A check is a check. Kim, you know athletes.
- 49:48Speaker 3: You know sports.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Yes, I used to really know it. But, you know,
- 49:51Speaker 2: something happened, and it hurt me, so I left. But
- 49:55Speaker 2: go ahead. Were you a Browns fan? I love sports, yes.
- 49:58Speaker 3: Browns, Cavaliers.
- 50:00Speaker 2: All that. I played football.
- 50:01Speaker 3: I did it all.
- 50:03Speaker 2: One of the first girls on the team.
- 50:05Speaker 3: On the Browns?
- 50:05Speaker 2: On the Browns.
- 50:07Speaker 3: Cleveland fanatic.
- 50:10Speaker 2: I like the Seahawks and I like the Browns, but
- 50:12Speaker 2: the Browns, you know, the cardiac kids.
- 50:16Speaker 1: So, Kim, being from Cleveland, who is like your sports team? Like,
- 50:20Speaker 1: who do you follow now? Is it more football? Is
- 50:24Speaker 1: it more basketball? Because now, like you said, you living,
- 50:27Speaker 1: being here in L.A., you know, this is a basketball city.
- 50:30Speaker 3: Yes.
- 50:31Speaker 2: I switched. You're right. The Lakers and the Clippers now,
- 50:35Speaker 2: I go to the games.
- 50:36Speaker 1: Yes.
- 50:36Speaker 2: You're absolutely right. I did switch. I don't even go
- 50:39Speaker 2: to a football game anymore. No. Didn't even think about that.
- 50:42Speaker 5: But because, well, the Staples Center is so fun, the food,
- 50:45Speaker 5: you get to see people.
- 50:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it just switched over. It did. And then I
- 50:50Speaker 2: had to learn the game of basketball. You have to learn.
- 50:54Speaker 2: In order to enjoy sports, you have to understand them.
- 50:58Speaker 2: You're just watching it. But once you start learning and
- 51:00Speaker 2: someone's there teaching you, Did you play any sports growing up?
- 51:04Speaker 3: I did.
- 51:05Speaker 2: I was captain of my volleyball team in college. I
- 51:08Speaker 2: ran track. I played basketball.
- 51:10Speaker 3: I love it.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Girls football.
- 51:12Speaker 1: So basketball should have been an easier follow than football, right?
- 51:17Speaker 2: Yeah, except my brothers played football. And then in high school,
- 51:21Speaker 2: they passed a law that said girls can play football.
- 51:24Speaker 2: And I joined the team as shaker and And I
- 51:27Speaker 2: don't want to talk about it because they had me
- 51:31Speaker 2: and Suzanne's. Let me tell you something, because then the
- 51:34Speaker 2: coaches and the boys were mean because we had to
- 51:36Speaker 2: use separate locker rooms. And then, you know, they would.
- 51:43Speaker 2: They would hit us. They would. They don't make pads
- 51:48Speaker 2: for these. The pads on the shoulders. Oh, my God.
- 51:51Speaker 2: We got beat up so bad. I quit in two days.
- 51:54Speaker 2: My brothers hated me. They came home and was talking
- 51:56Speaker 2: to me, telling my mom. She want to be. I
- 51:58Speaker 2: don't know why. And you know what? I had to
- 52:00Speaker 2: analyze this. You know why I did that? This is
- 52:03Speaker 2: going to sound crazy. This is therapy. I did that
- 52:07Speaker 2: so my father would be proud of me.
- 52:10Speaker 4: He loved.
- 52:11Speaker 2: He came to all my brother's games. So he said,
- 52:15Speaker 2: if I play football. He'll come to see me play.
- 52:18Speaker 2: He came to maybe one volleyball game, maybe. You know
- 52:21Speaker 2: he would.
- 52:21Speaker 3: Have came to all the football games.
- 52:22Speaker 1: What?
- 52:22Speaker 2: So I joined it. It was me and this other girl.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Let me tell you something. Yeah.
- 52:28Speaker 3: What position did you play?
- 52:30Speaker 2: Wide receiver. I'm going to run and catch the ball.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Because I knew I was fast because I ran track.
- 52:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Okay. Okay. Ran track.
- 52:38Speaker 3: So were these boys.
- 52:41Speaker 3: They would aim at your boobs?
- 52:43Speaker 2: It was my brothers and my cousin. What do you
- 52:45Speaker 2: mean aim? Straight elbow. Straight. As hard as they could.
- 52:50Speaker 3: Trying to make you quit.
- 52:51Speaker 2: And what did I do? Tail.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Ma!
- 52:55Speaker 2: Tail. I showed him.
- 52:58Speaker 3: You've seen a lot of people. Is there anybody that
- 53:00Speaker 3: can make you starstruck?
- 53:03Speaker 2: Wow.
- 53:04Speaker 3: Besides me.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Besides you and Terrell. You're right. There are a lot of,
- 53:12Speaker 2: Al Pacino. You saw Al Pacino? Al Pacino chased him
- 53:15Speaker 2: down on the carpet. Al Pacino really, and what do
- 53:21Speaker 2: you say? And oh, what's the man that I chased
- 53:25Speaker 2: him down to? Who did the color purple? What's his name?
- 53:29Speaker 3: Danny Glover?
- 53:30Speaker 2: No, the man who created, who was the boss. What's
- 53:32Speaker 2: our man? Not, Steven Spielberg.
- 53:36Speaker 3: You saw, you chased down Steven Spielberg?
- 53:38Speaker 2: And I did, and I stood there in his face.
- 53:41Speaker 3: I had nothing to say.
- 53:41Speaker 2: And I was looking, and I, you just, because I
- 53:45Speaker 2: want to be like, can you do for me what
- 53:48Speaker 2: you did for Oprah?
- 53:50Speaker 4: Right.
- 53:50Speaker 2: I don't know how to say that, but I was
- 53:52Speaker 2: just like, we're here. When I tell you this man
- 53:56Speaker 2: looked at me like security. I didn't know what to
- 54:01Speaker 2: do with that because I don't understand like when people
- 54:03Speaker 2: chase me down. They just they want something from you.
- 54:07Speaker 2: And I don't know what they want, but I understand
- 54:09Speaker 2: it because you're right. You start. That's the only people
- 54:12Speaker 2: I'm just like, damn.
- 54:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Did you have something in your head formulated prior to
- 54:17Speaker 1: meeting him that when you when you did meet him
- 54:20Speaker 1: that you wanted to.
- 54:22Speaker 3: I did. But it just didn't come out.
- 54:24Speaker 2: It made no it was.
- 54:26Speaker 3: It was. It just didn't.
- 54:28Speaker 2: You know, I know Oprah. I'm Oprah's friend, and I know,
- 54:33Speaker 2: and they told me, but look, I got this thing
- 54:35Speaker 2: I need to rent you. I didn't know what, what
- 54:38Speaker 2: am I saying? A lot of times you're looking for advice.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Advice would have been good, but on the carpet? How
- 54:45Speaker 2: do you, hey, I know who you are.
- 54:48Speaker 3: You may not know me from Beauty Shop.
- 54:50Speaker 2: Right. Do you watch BET?
- 54:53Speaker 3: Have you seen old drama?
- 54:54Speaker 2: Have you seen? So.
- 54:57Speaker 1: You're trying to find something simple to engage in a
- 55:00Speaker 1: conversation to where it will lead to what you want to.
- 55:03Speaker 3: And you don't look crazy.
- 55:05Speaker 2: You cannot.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Look like a weirdo. Like you said, security.
- 55:09Speaker 2: Right. The only other person, and you play and you
- 55:11Speaker 2: have not made it happen. I have not officially met
- 55:16Speaker 2: Obama and Michelle. That's what's so crazy. And when I
- 55:20Speaker 2: think about all the people like Oprah and Tyler, all
- 55:22Speaker 2: these people I do know.
- 55:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 55:25Speaker 2: And actresses that are fantastic. But I don't know. This
- 55:32Speaker 2: is how I met Obama. You ready?
- 55:33Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 55:35Speaker 2: It was... When they were in office, it was Easter weekend.
- 55:39Speaker 2: They came into the church in D.C. My niece, my
- 55:43Speaker 2: little cousin, invited me to the church. They sit two
- 55:46Speaker 2: rows in front. It's me, my son, and somebody else.
- 55:53Speaker 2: But the daughters recognize me from raising Whitley. The mama
- 55:59Speaker 2: and the kids. What's her name?
- 56:00Speaker 3: Melania? Sasha.
- 56:02Speaker 2: Yeah, Sasha. This is what's so crazy.
- 56:04Speaker 3: What's their name?
- 56:04Speaker 2: Sasha and Melania. Sasha and Melania.
- 56:06Speaker 3: Yeah, Sasha and Melania.
- 56:06Speaker 2: And they were fans of the show. And I was
- 56:09Speaker 2: like this. And they're two rows wide. And I saw
- 56:13Speaker 2: Michelle and Melania and the girls turned around. They were like,
- 56:16Speaker 2: and they saw a little baby Joshua.
- 56:17Speaker 5: They were like.
- 56:18Speaker 2: So I see Michelle and the girls tap. They daddy
- 56:24Speaker 2: and the husband, Mr. Obama himself. Pop, pop, pop. When
- 56:28Speaker 2: I tell you this man, they're like, that's Kim. That's Kim.
- 56:30Speaker 2: And again, when I tell you he did like this.
- 56:35Speaker 2: I was like this. You don't want to meet me? No,
- 56:41Speaker 2: but he wasn't mean, but he was just like, they
- 56:44Speaker 2: were excited. That's as close as I've gotten. Then they
- 56:48Speaker 2: had the Easter egg hunt and they cut off this
- 56:50Speaker 2: little area. And Obama went in there and Michelle went
- 56:53Speaker 2: in there to read the little books to the kids.
- 56:55Speaker 2: And a man, I had gone to the bathrooms. Somebody,
- 56:58Speaker 2: I said, I got to go to the bathroom. Take
- 57:00Speaker 2: my son, leave him, you know, leave him in here.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Just watch him. You know me, I leave him with
- 57:02Speaker 2: a stranger. I go back. They won't let me back
- 57:07Speaker 2: in the fence. Why is Joshua on Obama's shoulders? Walking
- 57:14Speaker 2: around the little thing with the kids. Did you get
- 57:16Speaker 2: it on camera? They said if I reach out to
- 57:19Speaker 2: the photographer that was always a photographer, they have that picture.
- 57:24Speaker 2: And somebody took it from the back. Like I saw people,
- 57:27Speaker 2: but I was like, somebody give me the camera. But
- 57:29Speaker 2: he had Joshua up on his shoulder.
- 57:31Speaker 3: I'm going to get that picture for you.
- 57:32Speaker 4: Somebody, former White House aide.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Yeah. I got it.
- 57:36Speaker 3: Somebody.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Those are my people.
- 57:37Speaker 3: I got you.
- 57:38Speaker 2: Those are your people.
- 57:39Speaker 3: And make sure I meet them one day.
- 57:40Speaker 2: We need that picture.
- 57:41Speaker 3: I got you. That might be harder, but the picture connection.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Really? You can't make that happen?
- 57:45Speaker 3: They don't call me back. Former president, Mr.
- 57:49Speaker 4: Obama.
- 57:49Speaker 2: No, you got it.
- 57:49Speaker 3: Obama, Michelle, y'all come on.
- 57:51Speaker 2: Is there anybody you wanted to meet, either one of you,
- 57:56Speaker 2: and they died before you got a chance to meet them?
- 57:58Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, Michael Jackson.
- 58:00Speaker 2: Oh, that's a good one. Prince.
- 58:02Speaker 3: Prince.
- 58:03Speaker 5: Wow we were in the same room uh-huh but I
- 58:06Speaker 5: didn't get to meet him he oh he kind of
- 58:08Speaker 5: kind of said what's up to a group of us
- 58:10Speaker 5: but I would have loved like when I hear Chappelle
- 58:11Speaker 5: and Chris Rock talk about because they were friends with
- 58:14Speaker 5: him those stories are.
- 58:16Speaker 3: Like this dude was special yeah I met him met.
- 58:20Speaker 1: Prince uh it was all-star weekend in New York and
- 58:25Speaker 1: being a brand Jordan brand uh brand Jordan athlete um
- 58:30Speaker 1: Mike always has like an after party or what have you.
- 58:32Speaker 4: So he only, it's selective people. So it was like
- 58:35Speaker 4: a little small group of people.
- 58:37Speaker 1: And I knew, but not everybody else knew, but the
- 58:41Speaker 1: performance was Prince.
- 58:42Speaker 4: It was like a special performance and it was Prince.
- 58:45Speaker 1: And when everybody that came in at the new security
- 58:50Speaker 1: was in there, no pictures, no, no, you know, he
- 58:52Speaker 1: was anal about no pictures, no videos, no nothing.
- 58:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:56Speaker 1: Did like, I still snuck and took a video. The
- 59:02Speaker 1: week after I post that video, it stripped from Instagram.
- 59:08Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 59:09Speaker 2: I'm like, why am I... like, how did why did
- 59:11Speaker 2: I post it?
- 59:12Speaker 1: I know they can do that. He was ain't on
- 59:15Speaker 1: no video. It was like no videos.
- 59:17Speaker 2: No pictures.
- 59:18Speaker 4: No, nothing Everybody that was in there.
- 59:20Speaker 1: They had security walking around if they saw you videoing
- 59:24Speaker 1: took that phone and they deleted it No pictures. No
- 59:27Speaker 1: nothing But what I will say, what I've heard, some
- 59:31Speaker 1: of the best performances and people that not only just
- 59:34Speaker 1: perform and entertain, Michael Jackson and Prince, he was only
- 59:40Speaker 1: supposed to perform like maybe one or two songs. He
- 59:44Speaker 1: got on that stage and went for like an hour.
- 59:47Speaker 4: And a half.
- 59:47Speaker 3: I believe it. I've heard the story.
- 59:49Speaker 4: Because he got so into it, like he's a.
- 59:51Speaker 1: Performer, like he wants to perform. Man, I ain't going
- 59:54Speaker 1: to tell you, I was glued. It was like no other,
- 59:59Speaker 1: like nothing I've ever seen. And Mike had already passed.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: I'm like, this is the closest I'm going to ever
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: get to somebody like Michael Jackson.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: And I soaked that up.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: Good for you. And you got it up here.
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: Oh, I got some videos from.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Oh, you still got the sneaky videos.
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: They're going to come get you.
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: That's what I say.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: That's all right, son.
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Come on.
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: Tell them to try.
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: Come on.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: Come on with it.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Who was the person you wanted to meet, but
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: they passed away? Who was it that I was like, oh, dang,
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: I never, and I guess I will say Michael Jackson,
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: because I was supposed to go to his house back
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: in the day with Cynthia, Cynthia Boutte from the YMCA.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: She took the first group of kids to Neverland. She
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: got a whole program and took inner city kids. It
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: was the first bus. And I worked at the Y.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: She said, Kim, do you want to go? I said, yes.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: I had rehearsal with Shelly Garrett. And what I did,
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: when I tell people, I should have been sick that day.
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: And I said, I.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: Said, Shelly, can I go to Michael Jackson's house? Can
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: I please go? He said, you cannot miss rehearsal. And
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: you think about your life. And you know what I said?
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: I said, I'm going to be so great, I'm going
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: to meet Michael one day. But what I learned from
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: that is when opportunity knocks, take it. And I could
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: have said, I'm sick and didn't show up. I might
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: have lost my job. Who knows? But I could also
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: have been Mike's right hand. Who knows what would have happened?
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: But that was the one person I wanted to meet.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: I did get to meet Prince quickly. Sheila E. introduced
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: him to me. He said, I know who you are.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: That's always great, right? For all three of us, like, Yeah.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: We're somewhat. They're famous. I'm popular.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: So when you meet somebody that you are a fan
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: of and then they know you.
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: It's like.
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: That happened to me with Michael Jordan.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: Well, how would he not know you? Well, you were
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: pretty famous then, right?
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: But I just. Still. Did you have braces?
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: But I.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: No, no.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: OK.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: But I didn't think he.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I didn't.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: I just. I mean, I didn't know. I didn't know
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: if he.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: Because I'm.
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: People don't follow football. They don't really know who you are.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: But I met him.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: It was another NBA All-Star weekend in Atlanta, and he
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: was at his party or something. He was in Keith
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Sweat's club, and he was in the back in VIP.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: And somebody brought me back there to him.
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: And I was like, hey, Mike.
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: Hey, Mr. Jordan. I was like, I'm Terrell.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: He's like, you know, Mike, I know who you are, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: That's dope.
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: Man, it was crazy.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: That's dope.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: One other person I wish I would have met is
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: Bernie Mac.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: We knew Bernie. That's one person.
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: And I've even, through Instagram, have talked to his daughter.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: Because somebody had mentioned that he looked like me.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: He has a brother that they said, she told me
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: he has a brother that reminded me of him.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: Oh, nice.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: What about Nelson Mandela? Did anybody meet him?
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: Not us three niggas, no. Nelson George, maybe. Howie Mandel.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: He was at the club the other night.
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: Being that you said that, we're going to take us home.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: To take us home. Kim, we have a segment on
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: here called Four Downs. Four Downs to score.
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: Can you score? You got four downs to do this.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: Okay. Okay. So many things I could say right now.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Yeah, say what you got to say. First down, Kim,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: you've made people laugh for so many years. What's one
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: moment in your career that's really important to you that
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: people realize?
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: Creating and selling the show Raising Whitley, my reality show
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: that gave women permission to adopt a child and being
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: a single mom and just building your village together. I
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: got a lot of reward from that.
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: Where's Rodney?
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: He's still around. Joshua's with him right now.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: On his shoulders.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: He's like, I'm going to my dad's house. Yes, that's true.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: The village has been great.
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: Second down, Kim. Second question.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: What role.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: Or what movie you wanted to play or be in
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: that you didn't get?
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Oh gosh, and go with the ones that like, you're like,
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: and they turn the knife and you're like, oh gosh.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: The pit, there was a, who ran the hospital.
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: Yep, the pit. That looks good too.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: You know what, Chris. So you're trying to say I
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: couldn't have done it? You would have killed it. I
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: would have killed it. But there's something about her. Okay.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: But I'm saying it's not, the part is for that person,
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: it's for that person.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: No.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: Because I don't want people to be like, oh, Kim,
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: all bitter. No. No, you're not bitter. She was better
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: than you. Abbot Elementary, Janelle James' part, The Principal.
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: You was up for that?
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: I was up for that. Yes, waiting for me. You
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: would have killed that. We can keep on going down
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: the list. I want to be in a new Snoop
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: movie right now.
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: Let me see. Wait, what else?
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: NCIS couldn't be in that but when I look at
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: all the things and the variables and things that happened
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: sometimes it wasn't your performance there's other things in there
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: Dolomite I'd have loved to been in it but the
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: girl who got that part she won an Oscar so
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: you see where her path was going I can go
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: down a whole your movie you didn't put me on
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: the strip whatever that I loved that.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: Movie they said you was Chris yeah man she was
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: too funny I was like, I love that movie.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: Why you didn't put me in that? I got on terrible.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: Let's get on you for a second. So why didn't
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: you put me in, what's it called, On the Strip?
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: You can tell me the name of it.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: I got it. It's On the Strip and it's That's it.
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: It's third down, Kim.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: Come on. Strip. It's on the strip. Where would it be?
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: No, what?
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: Back on the strip.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: That movie, I enjoyed that. I think it should have
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: gotten more publicity.
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: I do, too.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Why didn't you put me in it?
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: We came out doing a strike.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: Was there a part there that you could have been like,
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: Kim could have done this?
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: Yes, that they wanted to go a different way. That's
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: what they always say. Such a Hollywood answer.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: No, but it was a Hollywood answer. It was. They
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: wanted to go white. Aren't you the boss? No.
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: I'm a director for hire. I'm not Tyler Perry.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: But I thought it was your movie.
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: He's sounding like Stephen H. Smith right now. Oh, get him.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: You know how this shit is.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: I know how it is. But no, there's so many
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: roles we could talk about. There's a show called The
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: Cable Guy. I really wanted that one. It's coming out soon.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: But it's such a good, like I can see myself
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: in it. It's dark. It's funny. Because I want to
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: do something different.
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: Dark and funny.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: Go number three. Third down.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: This question right here, I'm going to frame it. And
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: I can frame it because I've been in this position before.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: As a football player, not really knowing that I would
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: become the player that I became, I had somebody to
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: believe in me. Not just one somebody, a few people.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: Who in your career believed in you when nobody else did?
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: I mean, are these career? Well, we know my parents,
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: of course.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Before they knew Kim Whitley, the actress, the entrepreneur, the comedian,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: before they knew Kim Willie, Hollywood, L.A., Kim Willie.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: My sixth grade teacher, Miss Groves. Yeah, she's still around.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Miss Groves, she's still around. She comes to all my performances.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: I was like, how old were you when you started teaching?
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: I was about to say, how old is she now?
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: I guess she's like in her 80s.
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: 80s? Wow.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: You'll be on the road and she'll come to my show.
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: She'll come to your show in Cleveland.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Martha's Vineyard. Yeah, she's something else. Black lady? Black lady, yeah.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: She let me bring a rat to the class. It
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: was a lot. Fourth down, Kim.
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: You're close. You're close to scoring.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: You haven't scored just yet, but you got one down
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: to do this. At this stage of your life and career,
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: what is Kim Whitley chasing now that may surprise some people?
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: Like, what's next for Kim?
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: Okay, I was going to say peace. You know, because
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: I've been chasing it for a long time. But I
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: want to give other people jobs, producing, directing, creating, that
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: kind of thing. Giving others opportunities that you... Yes, comedy special.
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: Those things you just want to knock off now.
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: How about your comedy special? Exactly.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: That's what is next for me. My comedy special. I
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: saw Chris could do it. I was like, There's my twin.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: I can do it.
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: Because both of us, so we both.
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: Comedians, quick-witted, a little lazy, because we can get away
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: with dunking instead of working on our left and working
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: on our right and making sure we run the floor.
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: But I got a little bit more work ethic. No,
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: let me tell you why.
- 1:08:59Speaker 5: My comedian, my comedy work ethic got better because she
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: was booking shit on TV and movies and I wasn't.
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: So I had to figure out how to do something else.
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: So I started writing, and that writing kind of transferred
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: also to my stand-up writing and caring.
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: And so.
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: If there's anybody who's been pushing her comedically, there's nobody
- 1:09:18Speaker 5: more than me and David Arnold, because we know, you
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: see how she didn't want to answer the question, and
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: I know exactly what to say to her? I know her,
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: because we're the same freaking people.
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: You know what to get out of it.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: Yes. We are the same. Strange enough, we love the
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: improv world and messing with people and talking.
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: You know what's so funny not to interrupt you?
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: It's a sister from another mother.
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: Like this whole thing with crowd work, me and her
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: were doing that shit when it was frowned upon.
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: Come on. They'd be like, oh, please, could you guys
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: do some material?
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: Me, her, Buddy Lewis... And now it's a big phenomenon.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: Matt Wright is in specials.
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: Nate Johnson, Nate Robinson, what's his name?
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: Nate Jackson.
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: Nate Jackson. Yes. What's the kid? Mojo Brooks. Mojo. And
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: even other comedians who weren't of that. Desi trying to
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: do a little bit of that stuff. And even other
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: comedians that weren't of that ilk. The Aries, the Gary Owens.
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: They're doing stuff that she and I were doing and
- 1:10:20Speaker 5: it was frowned upon because they would even ask.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: Us, she knows, they'd be like, are you hosting tonight
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: or are you doing material? I'm going to be funny.
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: I'm going to be up there. And now people are like,
- 1:10:34Speaker 5: are you going to do material?
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: I would love for you to do crowd work. That's
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: something her and I could do in our sleep.
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: We could go up on stage and do three hours
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: of not saying one thing we've ever said before.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: And that is which translates to talk show podcast because
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: that's what it's about, being able to just talk. If
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: you can just talk to people and be funny while
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: you're talking, it's the same thing.
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: And that's why we're here.
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: Thank you, Kim, for gracing our show.
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: Yes. Finally got a thank you. Thank you, Kim.
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: Tell our viewers where.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: They can find you, what you have going on, what's next.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: That's your camera there.
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: Let them know. Well, first of all, you can watch
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: me on my new show called The Barnell Hill Show. Yes.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: You and Wendy are reunited.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: That's right. We never worked together. Paramount Plus. You never
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: worked together. We've never worked together. That was it, but
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: we've never been on TV together. Paramount Plus, Barnell Hill Show, everybody,
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: Martin Lawrence, Tommy Davidson, and then social media across the board.
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: My name, K-Y-M, and Whitley.
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: So thank you to our guest, Kim Whitley. We love you.
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: You know how I feel about you. Even if some
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: people don't show it like they should.
