Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So are CDs and cassettes, and I, for the life
- 0:02Speaker 1: of me, cannot understand why, Lisa.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Well, Gen Z.
- 0:04Speaker 1: They're to blame, aren't they?
- 0:06Speaker 3: They're apparently bringing CDs back now. First of all, they
- 0:10Speaker 3: like to think they've discovered a lot of things. Sleeping in,
- 0:13Speaker 3: going for walks without your headphones on, quiet time.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Albums, vinyl albums. Vinyl. Now they've discovered CDs. Wouldn't you
- 0:22Speaker 2: know it?
- 0:23Speaker 3: Whether they've got a CD player or not, they're buying
- 0:27Speaker 3: up the CDs. And there's a direct correlation, evidently, with
- 0:31Speaker 3: the music that.
- 0:32Speaker 2: They're listening to, which is interesting.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Such as?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Well, they want our music.
- 0:37Speaker 1: No, it's our music.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Physical media in general is having quite a moment in 2026.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Through the first half of this year, total physical album
- 0:47Speaker 3: sales on vinyl CDs and cassettes reached 38.2 million units
- 0:53Speaker 3: in the United States alone.
- 0:55Speaker 2: That equates to a 7.8% increase.
- 0:59Speaker 3: This is all well and good, you know, on a
- 1:01Speaker 3: nostalgia level as far as vinyl and compact discs go.
- 1:04Speaker 2: But cassettes?
- 1:06Speaker 3: Kids, let me tell you, there ain't nothing nostalgic about
- 1:09Speaker 3: rewinding the tape onto your cassette with a pencil while
- 1:13Speaker 3: you're doing 120 down the forest highway.
- 1:16Speaker 2: It's not easy.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Do you still have a cassette player?
- 1:19Speaker 3: No, not a single one. I've got a couple of
- 1:21Speaker 3: cassettes that I wanted to listen to. Oh, it's about
- 1:24Speaker 3: a year ago or something. And I had nothing to
- 1:26Speaker 3: listen to them on.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I've got one. I've got an old Sony Walkman,
- 1:30Speaker 1: which I think still works. I'd need to find a
- 1:32Speaker 1: cassette head cleaner to, you know, to get it working again,
- 1:35Speaker 1: I would expect.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:37Speaker 1: But I've got a cassette collection. I've got a CD
- 1:40Speaker 1: collection and I've got a vinyl collection. But quite frankly,
- 1:42Speaker 1: I just can't be stuffed.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I got rid of it all.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I love streaming.
- 1:45Speaker 3: I mean, I was tricked into the get rid of
- 1:48Speaker 3: your vinyl CDs are better back in the, you know, 80s.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. So I did that.
- 1:53Speaker 3: And then, of course, you know, traveling around the country
- 1:56Speaker 3: for jobs and things made it very hard to take
- 1:58Speaker 3: your collection with you.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I took mine everywhere. And I'm kind of glad I
- 2:02Speaker 1: did now. But I still, I can't, you know, it's
- 2:05Speaker 1: all great and it looks good on the bookshelf. But,
- 2:06Speaker 1: you know, I can't be bothered putting an album on. Then, oh, God,
- 2:09Speaker 1: I've got to walk over and turn it over. And
- 2:11Speaker 1: if you listen to a single, you get four or
- 2:13Speaker 1: five minutes and then you've got to go and put
- 2:15Speaker 1: another one on. I know. I just know. I can't
- 2:18Speaker 1: be bothered.
- 2:19Speaker 2: So, yeah, CDs, replace all that.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Then replace the CDs once you could put everything on
- 2:25Speaker 3: your phone. I mean, my whole record collection is on
- 2:28Speaker 3: my phone and, of course, you just stream stuff.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Kids, wait till they discover the 8-track. Wait till they
- 2:34Speaker 1: discover the 8-track.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Wait till you get your hands on a little bit
- 2:37Speaker 2: of chalk. I....
- 2:41Speaker 1: The novelty is going to wear off, kids. Of course
- 2:43Speaker 1: it will. We've been there. It's all we knew. And
- 2:47Speaker 1: the novelty wore off. Look, I get it. holding the
- 2:52Speaker 1: album and there's the artwork and the notes. I love that.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I love all that.
- 2:56Speaker 2: And I missed that once you got a CD. That
- 2:59Speaker 2: took away all that.
- 2:59Speaker 1: But I can still do that while I'm streaming it
- 3:01Speaker 1: on Spotify.
- 3:02Speaker 3: But what about stacking up your six CD stacker in
- 3:04Speaker 3: the boot before you had to decide what you wanted
- 3:07Speaker 3: to listen to for the next four hours before you left?
- 3:09Speaker 1: You were obviously getting a bigger wage than I was
- 3:11Speaker 1: back in the 80s. That's for sure. I only heard
- 3:15Speaker 1: of CD stackers from the rich kids. It wasn't me.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Anyway, I'm happy to stick with my Spotify, my iHeart app.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And, of course, Gold 96 FM.
