- 0:07Speaker 1: Review Podcast is your source for all the latest news
- 0:10Speaker 1: and information on the NFL Draft. The New England Patriots
- 0:13Speaker 1: like now here to preview the safeties. The writers of
- 0:16Speaker 1: Patriots dot Com, Well, guys, we come to the end
- 0:18Speaker 1: of the rowth. This is our last position to break
- 0:21Speaker 1: down the safeties, last, but not least, because there are
- 0:24Speaker 1: a lot of good ones, um and there's some high
- 0:26Speaker 1: end talents at this position, but it's gonna be the
- 0:29Speaker 1: last position that we break down in our draft podcast previews.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Here Mike Deso and Matisse Bowman. I like saying Bowman,
- 0:43Speaker 1: So we we're going to talk about the safeties and
- 0:45Speaker 1: guys when you look at this position, it's impossible to really, uh,
- 0:50Speaker 1: you know, delve into these guys without talking about Kyle Hamilton.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I mean, I think this is one of the better
- 0:56Speaker 1: I think this might be the best project, my number
- 0:58Speaker 1: one prospect on the draft board in general. And uh,
- 1:02Speaker 1: he's a guy with really solid size, instincts to play mobility, versatility.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I think he I mean, I don't know how high
- 1:12Speaker 1: he's going to go in this draft, But I think
- 1:15Speaker 1: you'd be hard pressed to find a guy who's better
- 1:17Speaker 1: suited for the next level in the in the entire class. Yeah, totally.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I mean that's it's he's gonna be long gone by
- 1:23Speaker 1: the time the Patriots picked. But imagining what you know,
- 1:25Speaker 1: Bill Belichick could do with that kind of guy with
- 1:28Speaker 1: like you said, the size, I mean, six foot four, um,
- 1:31Speaker 1: the anticipation he comes down with heart. I mean, it's
- 1:33Speaker 1: just it's such an interesting position overall for the Patriots
- 1:36Speaker 1: because they're kind of stacked there, you know what I mean.
- 1:38Speaker 1: You have mccordy came back, but you've got Dugger, You've
- 1:40Speaker 1: got Phillips they signed to Bill Peppers, You've got Josh
- 1:43Speaker 1: Bledsoe waiting in the wings from last year. Um. But
- 1:46Speaker 1: I think overall the class, you know, after Hamilton, there's
- 1:48Speaker 1: just a lot of guys who, if they had more
- 1:50Speaker 1: of a need, you could see a fit for for
- 1:52Speaker 1: a lot of them, especially as you get here to
- 1:54Speaker 1: the second level, with you know, just to throw Daxon
- 1:57Speaker 1: Hill out there, as as as a common Patriots kind connection,
- 2:00Speaker 1: even though they have that position pretty well set. I
- 2:03Speaker 1: think he's one guy that that has intrigued a lot
- 2:05Speaker 1: of people just with his versatility and you know, the speed,
- 2:08Speaker 1: that's the thing that stands out with some of these
- 2:09Speaker 1: guys with with the four three speed. There's a bunch
- 2:11Speaker 1: of them. Yeah, and beyond Hamilton, pretty much the rest
- 2:14Speaker 1: of this class figures to be available at twenty one.
- 2:17Speaker 1: So Mike brought up Daxon Hamilton teas, what do you
- 2:21Speaker 1: think of I mean, not Daxon Hill, I'm sorry, not
- 2:24Speaker 1: Hamilton's Daxton Hill. Well, what do you think of Hill?
- 2:27Speaker 1: I like him a lot. He's really fast as at
- 2:28Speaker 1: four point eight up four point three eight at the
- 2:31Speaker 1: combine sees things developed really well, and he's versatile. You know.
- 2:34Speaker 1: One of the things that he could be moved the corner.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And then it's like, do you really want to save
- 2:38Speaker 1: dor a corner? Yeah? I think that's a good question, tease.
- 2:40Speaker 1: That's you know, part of the you need cornerbacks right now,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and certainly there's there's a number of cornerbacks that we've
- 2:46Speaker 1: talked about in the last show that could fit. But
- 2:48Speaker 1: you know, could he be that kind of zone guy
- 2:50Speaker 1: where it's just he's you know, solid, aggressive, can play
- 2:53Speaker 1: at a number of different spots. I think it's just
- 2:54Speaker 1: a question of tonnage and you know, what point do
- 2:57Speaker 1: you have too many strong safeties and not enough outside
- 2:59Speaker 1: corner backs and inside linebackers. I think that's what they
- 3:02Speaker 1: have to balance. Yeah, And the one thing that that
- 3:03Speaker 1: struck me with Hill is you don't you see a
- 3:06Speaker 1: lot of guys that are corners in college and you know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: sort of project them to safeties. This is a guy
- 3:11Speaker 1: that's legitimately getting UM. You know, some some of the
- 3:15Speaker 1: draft experts talking about the possibility that he could play
- 3:18Speaker 1: more corner in the pros and I really can't recall
- 3:21Speaker 1: seeing that often, uh, you know for some of these guys.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And as he said, for three forty is the reason
- 3:28Speaker 1: why people are saying that generally the corners that switch
- 3:31Speaker 1: to safeties do so because you know, they lack the
- 3:34Speaker 1: high end speed at the pro level and then it's
- 3:36Speaker 1: just not going to be able to handle it. This
- 3:38Speaker 1: guy's versatility to operate um, you know, in single high
- 3:42Speaker 1: as well as in the slot. UM. I do think
- 3:46Speaker 1: there's a chance of the Patriots might be more than
- 3:48Speaker 1: kicking the tires on Hill. I think he sort of
- 3:52Speaker 1: has that profile of their kind of versatility in the secondary.
- 3:57Speaker 1: You know, they've really strongly gone after these Michigan fenders
- 4:00Speaker 1: in the recent past. So um with you know, mixed
- 4:04Speaker 1: at best results. I don't know if they'll want to
- 4:06Speaker 1: continue that road, but I do think Hill is an
- 4:09Speaker 1: intriguing guy for sure. And you know it's a question
- 4:13Speaker 1: of he got speed, but you know, can you play man?
- 4:16Speaker 1: Can you? Is he used to that a little bit
- 4:17Speaker 1: of a jump? But I think you're right. And there's
- 4:19Speaker 1: just there's just so many of these strong safety types
- 4:21Speaker 1: that seem like like the new Belichick favorite position. There's
- 4:24Speaker 1: guys who play special teams, there's guys who are captains
- 4:27Speaker 1: and you know those those things always stand out, and
- 4:30Speaker 1: this this just feels like the prime Patriots position right now. Um,
- 4:33Speaker 1: you know, going down the list, Paul, I don't want
- 4:35Speaker 1: to jump on. Well, let's get let's let's get to
- 4:38Speaker 1: day two because there's a lot of Day two safeties. Yeah,
- 4:40Speaker 1: go ahead now, and I I hey, let's set the stage.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Everett's own lewis seen from another another member of the
- 4:46Speaker 1: Georgia defense. Um, but another outstanding guy. I mean, similar
- 4:50Speaker 1: to Hill, a little bit bigger, but I just you
- 4:52Speaker 1: see a lot of similarities to me in their game
- 4:54Speaker 1: in terms of playing strong safety, playing in the slot,
- 4:57Speaker 1: coming off the edge, Uh, making tackles, covering TI and
- 5:00Speaker 1: ends that kind of stuff. Another another really good player,
- 5:03Speaker 1: very aggressive and hey, Massachusetts defensor player of the Year
- 5:06Speaker 1: just five years ago, so he's got some connection to locally.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I also like Smoke Monday from Auburn, big tone setter. Uh.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You know, all these guys really are just enforcers, and
- 5:15Speaker 1: they really like light up the defense with the hits
- 5:17Speaker 1: they do. And you know he has three career pick sixes.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I want the smoke. Do you want the smoke part?
- 5:21Speaker 1: I don't want the smoke I want, but but I
- 5:24Speaker 1: do He's he is a very physical guy. Teas is right,
- 5:27Speaker 1: He's I think he can't cover. That's that That's what
- 5:30Speaker 1: I would worry about there. But um, it wouldn't be
- 5:33Speaker 1: bad to have a guy that, you know, you have
- 5:35Speaker 1: a nickname like that Smoke Ye throw him out there.
- 5:39Speaker 1: A couple other day two kind of guys though, you
- 5:43Speaker 1: know is Jalen Petrie is one. I think they're Uh.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Nick Cross from Maryland is another guy. Um, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 1: pretty productive guys here. Brian Cook from Cincinnati. Uh. Maybe
- 5:56Speaker 1: a little bit later, maybe not quite day two, maybe
- 5:59Speaker 1: on that day, two day three cusp. But some some
- 6:03Speaker 1: ability there for those kinds of guys. And I really
- 6:05Speaker 1: like Petrie from from Baylor. I thought you have a
- 6:08Speaker 1: solid senior Bowl. A lot of people talked about him there.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Um just basically can perform in any role like free
- 6:15Speaker 1: and strong safety, inside outside linebacker, pretty active, physical tackler,
- 6:19Speaker 1: uh and productive at Baylor, you know, with a long
- 6:22Speaker 1: career there. So I think there's there's another guy, And
- 6:26Speaker 1: Mike is right because I don't really they have a
- 6:29Speaker 1: lot of depth at safety, so you're just talking about
- 6:32Speaker 1: pure safety. Most of these guys should be around. Um,
- 6:37Speaker 1: you know mccordy, you know, we'll see how long he is,
- 6:40Speaker 1: but you know, you have a young guy and Dugger,
- 6:43Speaker 1: a young guy that you drafted last year and Bled,
- 6:45Speaker 1: so you know, I don't know if if mccordy and
- 6:48Speaker 1: Peppers are around long term, you know, and how much
- 6:50Speaker 1: longer Phillips will be around. But I think you have
- 6:53Speaker 1: some depth at the position. So it's gonna be interesting
- 6:55Speaker 1: to see what they're looking for. To me, it would
- 6:58Speaker 1: be a depth kind of guy, special team kind of guy,
- 7:01Speaker 1: and some of these guys I think definitely profile is that, Yeah,
- 7:05Speaker 1: I think it's the back end. And you brought up mccordy,
- 7:07Speaker 1: he's coming toward the end. How much do they value
- 7:10Speaker 1: that back end? Free safety guy who you know that?
- 7:13Speaker 1: And I think a lot of the guys that we're
- 7:14Speaker 1: talking about here are all strong safety types, guys who
- 7:17Speaker 1: played in the box, guys who can hit some of
- 7:19Speaker 1: their forty times are great. I mean, you mentioned Nick Cross,
- 7:22Speaker 1: who was you know, four three four, another one of
- 7:24Speaker 1: the four three guys along with with Hill and Scene.
- 7:26Speaker 1: So you know, maybe a late round flyer on somebody
- 7:30Speaker 1: who's a little bit faster, plays more in the back end,
- 7:33Speaker 1: isn't quite that strong safety mold. But there's just so
- 7:35Speaker 1: many guys in this list that we're talking about. Chiquon
- 7:37Speaker 1: Brisker another one from Penn State. Yeah, I like him too, leader,
- 7:40Speaker 1: strong safety type. I mean, they're just that it seems
- 7:43Speaker 1: like this draft is kind of littered with these day
- 7:44Speaker 1: two types of guys who were physical used to playing
- 7:47Speaker 1: in the box, but not so much the back end.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I mean, I think Hamilton can do it all, but
- 7:52Speaker 1: you know, after him, it's it's a question of how
- 7:54Speaker 1: do they how do they balance it all out with
- 7:56Speaker 1: the skill sets that they have. You've got, you know,
- 7:58Speaker 1: bringing in Pepper's he's you know, kind of a linebacker
- 8:00Speaker 1: hybrid almost more than than it's true safety. So we'll
- 8:03Speaker 1: see how it how it all plays out. Tease, any
- 8:05Speaker 1: of the late guys, uh, you know, catch your eye.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I like Verne McKinley out of Oregon, a lot of production,
- 8:11Speaker 1: eleven career interest. There's a free safety guy that's a
- 8:14Speaker 1: that's a guy like talking about yeah and need a
- 8:16Speaker 1: little undersize, but he's just always looking for the ball,
- 8:18Speaker 1: so you know that's something he got. He's a ballhawk.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I love the ball hawks. Yeah. I mean sometimes you
- 8:23Speaker 1: never know what those guys because the interceptions can come
- 8:26Speaker 1: and go. You know, are they not throwing at you
- 8:28Speaker 1: because you're really sustainable, that's the question. But I do
- 8:32Speaker 1: you know when you have a guy with with that
- 8:34Speaker 1: much production, those kinds of ball skills, I agree with Tease.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I think he's a late round guy to keep an out,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you know, fifth round, sixth round kind of guy to
- 8:41Speaker 1: keep an eye on. Yeah, I mean a lot of
- 8:43Speaker 1: good fits. I wouldn't be surprised to not see anybody taken.
- 8:46Speaker 1: But based on how much attention they give this safety
- 8:49Speaker 1: position I just don't feel like you can you can
- 8:51Speaker 1: totally rule it out. Yeah, and you see, you know,
- 8:53Speaker 1: a guy like Kirby Joseph, a lot of his highlights
- 8:55Speaker 1: that I watched involved special teams. You know, he was
- 8:58Speaker 1: you know, that's these guys. He's a gunner. That's where
- 9:01Speaker 1: these guys are. You know, they're they're they're Day three
- 9:03Speaker 1: kinds of guys. So you're looking for them to fill
- 9:06Speaker 1: you know, rolls for you and you know we talk
- 9:09Speaker 1: about Devin mccordy, Well, Matthew Slater's not going to be
- 9:11Speaker 1: around forever either, you know, so they're gonna be looking
- 9:13Speaker 1: for some of these young guys that can you know,
- 9:15Speaker 1: sort of plug into these these gunner and vice guy
- 9:19Speaker 1: kind of roles and see it a lot with with
- 9:22Speaker 1: these backup safeties. I think they mean Hill Hill is
- 9:25Speaker 1: a popular Patriots connection. I just would be curious how,
- 9:28Speaker 1: you know, if they chose Hill over a more traditional uh,
- 9:31Speaker 1: you know, one of those corners like we talked about
- 9:33Speaker 1: guys that you know, Booth McDuffie, true corners, but you
- 9:36Speaker 1: know they not the size that that Dax Hill has necessarily.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Um so we'll see what what if it kind of
- 9:42Speaker 1: signals some kind of shift in terms of how they're
- 9:44Speaker 1: going to play in the secondary. Yeah, I don't think
- 9:47Speaker 1: it would be a huge, huge position of need. I
- 9:50Speaker 1: think Hill does provide you some of that intrigue because
- 9:54Speaker 1: of the ability to play corner. I agree with everything
- 9:56Speaker 1: might just set about that. Uh. So that's gonna wrap
- 9:59Speaker 1: up our positional breakdowns. We are. We've done it. We've
- 10:02Speaker 1: done them all, guys, you guys as usual, I've carried
- 10:05Speaker 1: them all and when the evaluations are wrong, I will
- 10:08Speaker 1: in turn blame you guys, because that's what I do.
- 10:11Speaker 1: But we have a lot to come. I just want
- 10:14Speaker 1: to give a little bit of house cleaning here. We
- 10:18Speaker 1: are gonna give you a wrap up of our draft
- 10:20Speaker 1: podcasts coming up on Wednesday, So the day before the draft, Uh,
- 10:25Speaker 1: you will get sort of an encapsulation of everything that
- 10:28Speaker 1: we're talking about. Um, you know what these positions will
- 10:31Speaker 1: go over what we think is the positions of the
- 10:33Speaker 1: Patriots probably most interested in. But also we're going to
- 10:36Speaker 1: be with you throughout the draft Thursday, Friday, Saturday. We'll
- 10:40Speaker 1: be with you for the entirety of the first round
- 10:42Speaker 1: on Thursday, uh, starting at eight o'clock, starting a little
- 10:46Speaker 1: bit before eight o'clock actually, but we will give you
- 10:49Speaker 1: the entire first round and we'll be with you Friday night.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I you know, I'm not going to tell you the
- 10:54Speaker 1: times because I forget them. I think it's seven thirty
- 10:58Speaker 1: to ten, is that? Is that what we're doing? Thirty
- 11:00Speaker 1: to ten, and then Saturday for day three for you,
- 11:03Speaker 1: for you die hards out there, two to four, we'll
- 11:05Speaker 1: be with you. And by that time I'll need my apps.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I'll need more appetizers to get me through those kinds
- 11:12Speaker 1: of days. Fred doesn't let me drink anymore, you know. Now,
- 11:15Speaker 1: he's sort of fun to find that. You know, it's
- 11:17Speaker 1: a new it's it's kind of a new culture. Sober Paul,
- 11:19Speaker 1: sober Paul. So but that's what you have to look
- 11:22Speaker 1: forward to or avoid, depending on your point of view.
- 11:26Speaker 1: But I want to thank I want to thank Matt
- 11:29Speaker 1: for fitting us in today, and also stay tuned for
- 11:34Speaker 1: Wednesday because that will sort of give you, if you
- 11:36Speaker 1: if you haven't really kept track of all of the podcasts,
- 11:39Speaker 1: Wednesday will give you an idea of everything that we've
- 11:42Speaker 1: talked about throughout. Thank you for downloading this podcast. Subscribe
