- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo, Episode 174. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. We're so glad you're here. Lucas: Today we're going to learn some festive greetings for Deepavali, the festival of lights celebrated by Hindus in Malaysia and around the world. Luna: Ooh, I love Deepavali. The lights, the sweets, the open houses. I want to be able to wish my friends properly in Malay. Lucas: Perfect. So the most common greeting is 'Selamat Deepavali'. Let's break it down. 'Selamat' means 'safe' or 'peace', and 'Deepavali' is the festival name. So literally 'Peaceful Deepavali'. Luna: Selamat Deepavali. Lucas: Good. A bit slower: Selamat Deepavali. Luna: Selamat Deepavali. That's pretty easy. Lucas: Yes, it's simple. You can also say 'Selamat menyambut Deepavali', which means 'Happy celebrating Deepavali'. Let's try that. Luna: Selamat menyambut Deepavali. That's a mouthful. Lucas: It is a bit longer. 'Menyambut' means 'to welcome' or 'to celebrate'. So 'Selamat menyambut Deepavali' is like 'Happy welcoming Deepavali'. Luna: Selamat menyambut Deepavali. I'll practice that one. Lucas: When someone wishes you 'Selamat Deepavali', you can reply with 'Terima kasih' — 'Thank you'. And you might also say 'Selamat berhari raya' which is a general festive greeting, like 'Happy holidays'. Luna: So 'Terima kasih' we know. And 'Selamat berhari raya' is the same as for Hari Raya, but it works for any festival? Lucas: Exactly. It's a generic 'Happy celebrations' greeting. So let's practice a mini conversation. I'll greet you first. Lucas: Selamat Deepavali, Luna. Luna: Terima kasih. Selamat berhari raya. Lucas: Perfect. You can also add 'Selamat menyambut Deepavali' if you want to be more specific. Luna: Right. So if I say 'Selamat menyambut Deepavali' to you, you'd say 'Terima kasih, Selamat berhari raya'? Lucas: Exactly. You got it. Luna: Let me try that: Selamat menyambut Deepavali, Lucas. Lucas: Terima kasih, Selamat berhari raya. Very good. Luna: This is so useful. My neighbour is celebrating Deepavali and I want to wish her. Lucas: That's great. You can also ask if she's having an open house. 'Ada rumah terbuka?' But that's for another episode. Luna: Ooh, I'd love that. But let's focus on today's phrases. Lucas: So let's say them all together. First: Selamat Deepavali. Luna: Selamat Deepavali. Lucas: Next: Selamat menyambut Deepavali. Luna: Selamat menyambut Deepavali. Lucas: And the responses: Terima kasih. Selamat berhari raya. Luna: Terima kasih. Selamat berhari raya. Lucas: You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Malay, a small number of listeners support us through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That's what keeps these episodes ad-free and coming. Luna: Yeah, it really helps. We love making this, and it's nice to know some folks chip in to keep it going. Lucas: Absolutely. Now, back to Deepavali. Imagine you're at a friend's house and you see the oil lamps. You could say 'Cantiknya lampu minyak ini' — 'These oil lamps are beautiful.' But that's extra. Luna: Let's stick with greetings. So if I want to say 'Happy Deepavali' to my colleague tomorrow, I just say 'Selamat Deepavali'? Lucas: Exactly. And if they say it to you first, you reply 'Terima kasih'. Or if you want to be more elaborate, 'Selamat berhari raya'. Luna: Got it. I'm going to practice all three phrases tonight. Lucas: Good idea. Let's do one more repetition. Selamat Deepavali. Luna: Selamat Deepavali. Lucas: Selamat menyambut Deepavali. Luna: Selamat menyambut Deepavali. Lucas: Terima kasih. Luna: Terima kasih. Lucas: Selamat berhari raya. Luna: Selamat berhari raya. Lucas: That's it for today. Practice these and you'll be ready to greet your friends during Deepavali. Thanks for listening. Luna: See you next time. Selamat berhari raya!
