- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. We are in a new portion of
- 0:19Isaiah, and from Isaiah chapter 36 to chapter 39, we're going to
- 0:27be looking at some narrative sections of Isaiah's actual
- 0:32interactions with people in real time.
- 0:36And so I'm looking forward to that.
- 0:38A lot of the things that we've been looking at over the past,
- 0:41probably 20-5, maybe a little bit more than that, 25 chapters
- 0:46or so, have been predominantly messages that Isaiah would have
- 0:53preached or poems of prophecy that he would have written that
- 1:00people needed to know about what was to come, what things God was
- 1:06against and wickedness, wrong dealings with people.
- 1:10And so that's been a lot of the last 25 chapters.
- 1:13And so that is a much harder read or walk through for many of
- 1:19us. We don't often tune our senses
- 1:23or our spiritual appetites to consume these parts of
- 1:28Scripture, but it's really, really important that we do so.
- 1:33And so I've, I've enjoyed getting to go through this
- 1:37starting today and then for the next, let me see, this is 3678
- 1:42and 9. So for the next 4 days, we're
- 1:45going to be looking at a narrative portion of Scripture.
- 1:49So let's dive into history. We're jumping into seven O, 1
- 1:54BC, 7 O1 BC in Jerusalem in the southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 2:01This is 21 years after the northern Kingdom of Israel has
- 2:07been destroyed by the Assyrian Empire.
- 2:12So that took place in 722 BC. And remember when you're going
- 2:17BC, you're going from basically 0 BC backwards.
- 2:22So the larger numbers came come before.
- 2:26So at 722 BC, Assyria destroys the northern Kingdom of Israel.
- 2:32A few years later, the king of Assyria passes.
- 2:39His son is ascending to the throne.
- 2:42A lot of different nations go, oh, cool, now that there's a
- 2:46change in leadership, there's going to be a whole lot of chaos
- 2:50anyway in Assyria. And so we think that we can stop
- 2:54sending tribute or are, if you will, taxes over to Assyria and
- 3:01we can just live, you know, we'll make sure we have an army
- 3:04or something. Assyria won't be able to, you
- 3:06know, deal with us and bring us back in the line.
- 3:09That was not true. Assyria was doing very well for
- 3:12itself at this particular time period.
- 3:14And so the southern Kingdom of Judah was one of those nations
- 3:19that went, OK, we're going to use this time period to kind of
- 3:23get out from under the yoke of Assyria.
- 3:25And so Assyria is coming to destroy Judah.
- 3:31So that's where we're at right now.
- 3:32In the 14th year of King Hezekiah.
- 3:35This is Isaiah chapter 36 and verse #1 King Sennacherib of
- 3:39Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and
- 3:43captured them. So there were some of these more
- 3:48protected manned places within the southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 3:54And Sennacherib is just doing a fantastic job of getting all of
- 3:59those cities. Verse #2 Then the king of
- 4:01Assyria sent his royal spokesman along with a massive army from
- 4:06Lakish. This is one of the cities to
- 4:08King Hezekiah. At Jerusalem.
- 4:11The Assyrians stood near the conduit of the upper pool by the
- 4:15road to Launderers field. This is the same place that
- 4:20Isaiah stood in when he gave the message to Ahaz several years
- 4:26prior back in Isaiah Chapter 7 where he told King Ahaz don't
- 4:33trust Assyria and don't be afraid of the northern Kingdom
- 4:37of Israel and the Kingdom of Aram or Syria above Israel.
- 4:44I know right now they're wanting to attack you, but do don't ally
- 4:47yourself with Assyria. I will protect you.
- 4:50I will take care of Israel and Arab.
- 4:55So this is that same location that Hezekiah's dad A has heard
- 5:01from the Lord at. Verse #3 Eliakim son of Hilkiah,
- 5:06who was in charge of the palace, Shebna, the court secretary, and
- 5:10Joah son of Asaph, the court historian, came out to him.
- 5:14So here's the Assyrian spokesperson.
- 5:17He's coming. He's giving a message.
- 5:19He has a bunch of troops behind him.
- 5:21There's a contingent of those within the court of Hezekiah,
- 5:25king of Judah that come out to hear what this spokesperson has
- 5:29to say. Verse #4 the royal spokesman
- 5:31said to them, tell Hezekiah, the great king, the king of Assyria
- 5:36says this. What are you relying on?
- 5:38You think mere words or strategy and strength for war?
- 5:42Who are you now relying on that you have rebelled against me?
- 5:46Look, you're relying on Egypt, that splintered Reed of a staff
- 5:51that will Pierce the hand of anyone who grabs it and leans on
- 5:54it. Basically, if you're leaning on
- 5:58the staff, this is a splintered Reed, and so it can't actually
- 6:02hold up your weight, and so the stick is going to end up in your
- 6:06hand. And he says that's what it's
- 6:07like to rely on Egypt. This is the same type of thing
- 6:10that we heard several chapters ago that God says about Egypt as
- 6:14well. He says this is how Pharaoh,
- 6:17king of Egypt is to all who rely on him.
- 6:20Suppose you say to me, we rely on Yahweh, our God.
- 6:24Isn't he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah has
- 6:28removed saying to Judah in Jerusalem, you are to worship at
- 6:33this altar. Now here this spokesperson
- 6:36doesn't realize the one true God and what God himself had, which
- 6:40was there was 1 altar. There was 1 altar there in
- 6:45Jerusalem at the temple, and all of the various high places and
- 6:49altars that were for false gods that in centuries past the
- 6:56southern Kingdom of Judah and the Israelites had put up all
- 6:59across the land. Hezekiah knew and loved and
- 7:03followed Yahweh, and so he actually had the high places be
- 7:07torn down and the altars to the false gods be destroyed.
- 7:11And he told Israel like, we are supposed to be God's people, so
- 7:15we will only worship in this place that God has set up for
- 7:19his name. This Syrian spokesperson, he
- 7:23didn't understand that. And so he thought, OK, well,
- 7:25this doesn't really make sense. If you have a God in your land,
- 7:29you're supposed to set up a bunch of different altars.
- 7:31And that way the God can have more food and he will be more
- 7:36willing to listen to you. And so he didn't understand how
- 7:40it worked with the One through God.
- 7:42I'll toss this in as well. God knows how He ought to be
- 7:49worshipped, and He has told us the way that He desires to be
- 7:53worshipped. Part of what we as Baptist
- 7:57historically have been is those that would believe in the
- 8:01regulative principle of worship. That is, we ought to worship God
- 8:07only in the ways that He has told us he wanted to be
- 8:10worshipped. He's given us the wedding
- 8:12registry, and He doesn't want us to come up with our own things
- 8:16that are not on the registry, just buy the items that are
- 8:20there. So God has told us that he wants
- 8:23his word read and he wants his word preached.
- 8:26You can read that in first Timothy where Paul tells Timothy
- 8:29tell I come give attendance to the public reading of Scripture,
- 8:32to doctrine and to teaching. He says that God it is pleased
- 8:38God through the foolishness of preaching to save those who need
- 8:44to believe. We are told to pray together.
- 8:49We can read that in First Timothy chapter 2.
- 8:50I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy
- 8:54hands without wrath and doubting.
- 8:57We are told that we are to observe the Lord's Supper.
- 9:02We would read that even in Acts chapter 2.
- 9:04Every day they went from house to house.
- 9:08And I'm going to turn over there real quick because I have
- 9:11blanked on with the specific phrasing of the verses, and I
- 9:15want to make sure that I tell you guys correctly.
- 9:17Verse #46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together
- 9:21in the temple, and they broke bread from house to house.
- 9:24They eat their food with joyful and sincere hearts, praising God
- 9:28and enjoying the favor of all the people.
- 9:30And back in verse #42 and Acts 2, they devoted themselves to
- 9:34the apostles teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of
- 9:37bread, and to prayer. And this is the registry, if you
- 9:41will, that God has outlined for us.
- 9:43And so Hezekiah was following the registry that God had for
- 9:47his day. They're in Israel with the
- 9:50temple there in Jerusalem. And so let's worship God the way
- 9:54that he desires to be worshipped, because as we'll see
- 9:57next episode in chapter 37, God's blessing comes for those
- 10:02that pursue his way and trust His wisdom, not their own.
- 10:07Verse #8 The Assyrian spokesperson continues on.
- 10:10He's like, don't, he says you can't trust Egypt.
- 10:13Egypt's not going to help you out, Southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 10:16And then he says you can't trust Yahweh because you've torn down
- 10:19a bunch of these altars. And so Yahweh is going to be
- 10:22less able to help you, which again, not how that works, but
- 10:25he didn't know that. Verse #8 Now make a deal with my
- 10:28master, the king of Assyria. I'll give you 2000 horses if
- 10:32you're able to supply riders for them.
- 10:34He's basically saying you don't even have 2000 people in your
- 10:37army. Wasn't correct, but he said.
- 10:40Verse #9 How then can you drive back a single officer among the
- 10:45least of my master's servants? How can you rely on Egypt for
- 10:49Chariots and horsemen? Have I attacked this land to
- 10:52destroy it without Yahweh's approval?
- 10:55You always said to me, attack this land and destroy it.
- 10:58He's likely lying here that you could say this about anything,
- 11:03like, oh, you know, Allah told me this, or I can't remember
- 11:09offhand any of the names of the Hindu gods, but you could say
- 11:12that a God told you something that doesn't actually mean that
- 11:15it's true. Verse #11 Then Alaikum, Shebna
- 11:18and Jawa said to the royal spokesman, Please speak to your
- 11:21servants in Aramaic, since we understand it.
- 11:24Don't speak to us in Hebrew within earshot of the people who
- 11:27are on the wall. Basically, he's saying some
- 11:30really scary things. He's speaking to them in Hebrew.
- 11:34They don't want the people to freak out.
- 11:36And so they're like, OK, well, talk to us in Aramaic.
- 11:39That way we can understand you. But all of these people here on
- 11:42the wall that they won't freak out.
- 11:43Now, if you're trying to do negotiations, if I'm the
- 11:47Assyrian spokesperson, I'm going to tell them no, absolutely not.
- 11:50Like, I'll keep speaking in the Hebrew.
- 11:52And hopefully those people get scared enough that then they,
- 11:56you know, surrender all on their own, even without the
- 11:58instruction of their king. The royal spokesman replied in
- 12:03verse #12 As my master sent me to speak these words to your
- 12:07master and to you, and not to the men who are sitting on the
- 12:10wall who are destined with you to eat their own excrement and
- 12:14drink their own urine. Basically, you're going to
- 12:17undergo a siege because of. So instead of just fighting one
- 12:23another in open field, if Jerusalem can just stay within
- 12:26its city walls, it'll be relatively safe, but it can't
- 12:30get out in order to, you know, get new food or anything like
- 12:33that. And so eventually, they're going
- 12:35to run out of food, which is actually what happened to the
- 12:39northern Kingdom of Israel's capital city, Samaria, at
- 12:43various points that they were put under siege.
- 12:47And it got so bad that people were having to, you know, buy
- 12:50pigeon poop for food. And it was incredibly expensive.
- 12:55You can read about that. I forget if that's first or
- 12:58second Kings. We'll go through that at some
- 13:00point on Tabernacle Talk. So he says these guys are
- 13:03destined for a really, really bad siege.
- 13:06And so, yeah, I'm talking to you, but I'm actually talking to
- 13:09these people because I'm hoping these people will do a coup and
- 13:12they will surrender. And we won't have to have a
- 13:15giant, you know, long stay here. Verse #13 Then the royal
- 13:18spokesman stood and called out loudly in Hebrew.
- 13:22Listen to the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
- 13:26Don't let Hezekiah deceive you, for he cannot rescue you.
- 13:30Don't let Hezekiah persuade you to rely on Yahweh, saying Yahweh
- 13:34will certainly rescue us. This city will not be handed
- 13:37over to the king of Assyria. Don't listen to Hezekiah, for
- 13:41this is what the king of Assyria says, Make peace with me and
- 13:44surrender to me. Then everyone of you may eat
- 13:47from his own vine and his own fig tree and drink water from
- 13:50his own cistern until I come and take you away to a land like
- 13:54your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread
- 13:58and vineyards. So here he's saying we will
- 14:01leave you all in peace for a little bit.
- 14:04When you surrender, we're going to get another group of people.
- 14:07We're going to bring them to the land here of Canaan, of Israel,
- 14:12and they will be the new people to dwell in the land.
- 14:16And then Assyria would take the like, Jewish people from the
- 14:21southern Kingdom of Judah, and they would take them away and
- 14:23put them in a different land. It was one of the ways that
- 14:26Assyria made it so that people didn't rebel because they were
- 14:31no longer even in their homeland.
- 14:33And so they didn't really have as much of a reason to fight
- 14:36against Assyria. It was made much harder to do
- 14:39so. You're in unfamiliar territory
- 14:43and you would likely not know the terrain, the geography to be
- 14:48able to know, you know, good spots for maintaining guerrilla
- 14:52warfare, all that kind of stuff. And so he's like, hey, if you
- 14:56surrender, you'll live here for a little bit till we come and
- 14:59move you guys away to a different land, which is what
- 15:03happened already to the northern Kingdom of Israel.
- 15:05So even as the Assyrians are telling the the southern Kingdom
- 15:11of Judah this, this is something that they saw 21 years ago
- 15:15happen to their fellow Israelites living in the
- 15:18northern Kingdom. And so this would be an
- 15:20incredibly fearful time. Verse #18 Beware that Hezekiah
- 15:25does not mislead you by saying Yahweh will rescue us.
- 15:28Has any one of the gods of the nations rescued his land from
- 15:31the power of the king of Assyria?
- 15:34Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpat?
- 15:36These are cities. Where are the gods of Sephar
- 15:39vein? Have they rescued Samaria from
- 15:41my power? Who among all the gods of these
- 15:44lands ever rescued his land from my power?
- 15:47So will Yahweh rescue Jerusalem from my power?
- 15:51Basically none of these local deities have been able to
- 15:54protect their people from Assyria.
- 15:57And you guys think that Yahweh is going to make a difference.
- 16:01Summer 21 But they kept silent. They didn't say anything, for
- 16:05the King's command was don't answer him.
- 16:08Then Eliakim, son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace,
- 16:12Shebna, the court secretary, and Joe, a son of Asaph, the court
- 16:15historian, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and reported
- 16:19to him the words of the royal spokesman.
- 16:23So here's where this particular chapter ends is on a cliffhanger
- 16:29of what's going to happen to Jerusalem.
- 16:33There are several cities already in Judah that have been
- 16:37destroyed and taken down by this army. 21 years ago, the northern
- 16:42Kingdom of Israel was destroyed by this army.
- 16:45And So what is going to happen? Is Yahweh going to deliver
- 16:50Judah? We even read several prophecies
- 16:53that Isaiah had given in previous years about the fact
- 16:57that Assyria would be judged. It would come to nothing.
- 17:02It would be downtrodden that Judah needed to trust the Lord,
- 17:06not trust in Assyria or trust in Egypt.
- 17:09What are they going to do? And the answer to that, we find
- 17:14it next episode in chapter 37 as Hezekiah brings this time of
- 17:23fear and trembling to the only one who could actually help.
- 17:29And so I'm really looking forward to that with you.
- 17:32Tune in next episode to Isaiah chapter 37.
