- 0:00We read or hear about the accounts of individuals who had
- 0:05some kind of experience, either dramatically uplifting or
- 0:10severely traumatic, who awaken to a spiritual purpose in their
- 0:14lives which changes the entire direction and focus of what
- 0:18takes place for them afterwards when compared with their earlier
- 0:23life. The Tibetan Yogi Milarepa
- 0:27experienced the tragic death of his father, followed by his
- 0:30uncle and aunt, appropriating the family wealth and basically
- 0:34suppressing his mother, himself and his sister into poverty and
- 0:39oppression. His anger led him to practice
- 0:43black magic and created devastation in the village in
- 0:47retribution. Afterwards, as he began to
- 0:51reflect, he suffered intensely about the harm he had caused
- 0:55through his giving way to his anger, and he made it his life's
- 0:58mission to achieve salvation in one lifetime, leading to an
- 1:04intense spiritual sadhna. Milarepa experienced a reversal
- 1:10of consciousness that changed his entire life, focus, attitude
- 1:15and efforts. A Roman soldier, Saul, on the
- 1:20road to Damascus to harass the budding Christian enclave there,
- 1:25had a dramatic spiritual experience of Jesus and had what
- 1:29we may see as a reversal of consciousness from being an
- 1:33ardent and strict opponent to becoming a strong supporter of
- 1:39the Christian movement. Dannian Brinkley was a
- 1:43mercenary, a hired killer. After being struck by lightning
- 1:48and being declared clinically dead.
- 1:50He returned to life with a new outlook and understanding,
- 1:55recounted his experience in his book Saved by the Light, and
- 1:59gave up his former career to become a caring advocate for
- 2:04Hospice support for those who were dying.
- 2:08There are countless situations, some more mundane and some more
- 2:12extreme in their working that have switched people from an
- 2:16outward focus based in the ego consciousness and the workings
- 2:20of the body, life, mind complex, to an inward and upward turn to
- 2:25take up the spiritual life and leave their former concerns and
- 2:30activities behind, or else adjust in such a way that those
- 2:35activities become part of their spiritual development.
- 2:40Each individual who takes up the spiritual quest has their own
- 2:44version of the event or developments that converted them
- 2:47to that seeking. Until that occurs, the spiritual
- 2:52growth is more or less hidden behind the outer nature,
- 2:56although it must be noted it is still working unseen to mature
- 3:00the individual to take up that effort.
- 3:04A disciple asks Sweet Mother, how can someone who hasn't much
- 3:09spiritual capacity best help in this work?
- 3:14The mother writes quote. I don't know whether one can say
- 3:19that anyone has much or little spiritual capacity.
- 3:22It is not like that. To live the spiritual life, a
- 3:27reversal of consciousness is needed.
- 3:30This cannot be compared in any way with the different faculties
- 3:34or possibilities one has in the mental field.
- 3:38It may be said of someone that he hasn't much mental, vital or
- 3:42physical capacity, that his possibilities are very limited.
- 3:46In that case it may be asked how these capacities may be
- 3:50developed, that is, how new ones may be acquired, which is
- 3:55something rather difficult. But to live the spiritual life
- 4:00is to open to another world within oneself.
- 4:03It is reverse. One's consciousness, as it were.
- 4:07The ordinary human consciousness, even in the most
- 4:11developed, even in men of great talent and great realization, is
- 4:16a movement turned outwards. All the energies are directed
- 4:20outwards, the whole consciousness is spread
- 4:23outwards, and if anything is turned inwards, it is very
- 4:27little, very rare, very fragmentary.
- 4:31It happens only under the pressure of very special
- 4:34circumstances, violent shocks, the shocks life gives precisely
- 4:40with the intention of slightly reversing this movement of
- 4:44exteriorization of the consciousness.
- 4:49But all who have lived a spiritual life have had the same
- 4:52experience. All of a sudden something in
- 4:55their being has been reversed, so to speak, has been turned
- 4:59suddenly and sometimes completely inwards, and also at
- 5:04the same time upwards from within upwards.
- 5:09But it is not an external above, it is within deep, something
- 5:15other than the heights as they are physically conceived.
- 5:19Something has literally been turned over.
- 5:23There has been a decisive experience and the standpoint of
- 5:26life, the way of looking at life, the attitude 1 takes in
- 5:31relation to it, has suddenly changed and in some cases quite
- 5:36definitively, irrevocably. End Quote.
