- Assumpta Munsi: Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of the Vocal Hack Podcast. I'm Ossumta. Joana Lisboa: And I'm Joanna. Assumpta Munsi: And together we talk about all things related to your voice, how it functions, how you can use it and how you can take good care of it. Today, we're going to talk about one topic that is on everybody's mind nowadays. And that is, is AI gonna replace our job? Joana Lisboa: And in this case, we're what is AI doing to vocal coaches' jobs. So what is bringing to the table? And is it harmful or is it something good? So we're just going to talk a little bit about that. And not only to show but... also to bring up to the table what we researched about this. Assumpta Munsi: Yeah, think, Joanna, you wrote an article about this actually two years ago. And it's so interesting to look at this now and see how much AI has evolved since then. But you already wrote about it, right? Joana Lisboa: Yes, yes, yes. I wrote it in an article at LinkedIn. And it's just something that everyone was talking about, AI was replacing our jobs and everything. So I started look into it And it was something that I can say now that I feel that it's already a little... in the past because a lot has changed last couple of years. Assumpta Munsi: That's so true. think AI has exponentially grown in the last two years. what was true like two years ago is like so different now. But what we really want think and talk about today is in what ways did it evolve and is possible to use now? And in what ways maybe not. what we can see is that there are a lot of tools out there in the market related to voice, either for singing or for speaking. And a lot of them are, to be honest, still very, very rudimental in the way it's set up. But there are some that are really good, that do a great job. in analyzing or in giving you advice help you studying a character for like for example in musical theater or something like that. So there's a lot being done being researched. Joana Lisboa: Yes, yes. The pitch analysis, it's something that's exponentially got better. And a few years ago when I wrote the article, I tried a few tools and I felt like you said, not sufficient. That was my feeling at the time. But of course, things evolved and... And what I think is that these tools are very, very efficient if you want to understand how you can have a practice, daily practice, with some tools very, very interesting. And they help you to get an habit of the practice. And I think that is something that is important also for vocal coaching and can be used. But I think they might be a bit in terms of analysis of what the other person, what the client is needing. Because the person have some different needs than from the other people around. And these needs have to be heard. Usually they need to be heard by a human. Assumpta Munsi: what I noticed when I looked into it more more is a lot of them do is they help with like analyzing, creating exercises, or like giving you a summary of where you add what what's happening, what you can improve on. And I think that is a great tool to use. But what you should never do is use it by itself. Because the exercises, they might be good, but they also might be harmful. Joana Lisboa: Yeah. Assumpta Munsi: they might not take in account a psychological or physiological part of your body that they cannot read just from that recording. And that's where the human aspect of a vocal coach and also their expertise that one thing that they have what the AI doesn't have is they can take an account a lot more than just the voice. And they can hear a lot of things that are nuanced that an AI model might not have been trained on yet, or cannot actually hear the differences. That is something we develop through our experiences and work with so many different voices and learning about the little nuances that you can hear or see in a body. it's not only the hearing, like most of the time we can see the person. We're not just having a black surface in front of us. Like we see the people and we can see in their body or how they hold their head or how they breathe or whatever. A huge difference in the way the voice works. And that's something AI is not able to do at this point. Joana Lisboa: Yeah, and this tailored view that a person can do, I think with the tools of AI. like you said, using it just by yourself without any human interaction, I think it's a bit dangerous because we can have Assumpta Munsi: I agree. Yes. Joana Lisboa: people with damaged voice and voices and they have the need to go to doctors and a vocal coach automatically when they hear this kind of voices they recommend you to go to the doctor and treat it and to be evaluated by other humans. I think we can say that our takeaway of this situation, the current situation of AI towards vocal coaching is that it can be a wonderful tool that you can use to have daily practices or to have more conscience about your own voice because you can record it and you can hear it and so it's... It's gamification, can have like this, like a game and everything, so it becomes more fun, but it doesn't replace the human contact, because what we have to offer as vocal coaches, it's much more than vocal technique. Assumpta Munsi: fear not fellow vocal coaches, we're still relevant. Joana Lisboa: We are here to support our clients and our students. Assumpta Munsi: I actually think it's great, because it takes a part of our work that is quite repetitive, and gives us more time for the fun part, like actually working on like little details and really diving in and checking what are the mental and psychological things that are behind our voice and our emotions because these things are really what make your voice you. And those things are what for us is still the work that AI cannot do. And I'm really glad actually that there are tools out there to help. with the more repetitive and the more tactical skill task like training certain exercises, training certain patterns and stuff like that. just with the supervision of someone who can tell you, you're actually training it right, or you're training something wrong. And now we have more retraining to do. Because I think as singers, this is one thing you learn very early on. It is harder to relearn something that you learned a different way before than to learn something from scratch. Joana Lisboa: It's true, it's true, it's It's also when you're an instrument, I don't play an instrument so well, but the people that I know that are very good at their instruments, they talk about this, if they learn something in the wrong way, it's a lot of work just to undo that error and go back. Work is that, is undo little things that people are used to do and they think is normal, but they're really not helping them. And so it's so true what you said. Assumpta Munsi: So what we hope you take away from this is use AI tools, practice with them, take them on the journey that you have with your voice. But don't forget to use a vocal coach because in the end, you should never just trust a machine blindly. And there are experts for a reason. And the reason is to keep you safe and to actually help you grow on that journey and not grow in the wrong direction. And you have to walk all of that back to get actually into the right direction. So some of the tools we looked at in terms of singing, I think we're singing carrots, sing sharp, vocal image, Evita AI. And for speaking, I found vocally but Google tools, what are the best tools, there's so many out there, honestly, and I think it really depends on what you're looking for Again, ask a vocal coach to give them your advice on what is the best tool for you your needs and what you want out of it. Instead of just wasting your money on three tools and figuring out this is actually not what I want. Joana Lisboa: can try them out, but always have critical thinking. Don't forget that. You're the human, you got the power. Assumpta Munsi: And if something hurts, stop. Please. Joana Lisboa: wrong with your voice, that you feel like, my God, it's getting worse, don't continue with that work. because it might be very harmful for your health in general. Assumpta Munsi: Exactly. Yeah. So trust your guts there. Please, please don't let a machine tell you yet. You're doing awesome. Go. Do it again. Do it again. Don't do it again. Please don't. Joana Lisboa: Thank you so much for being with us to discuss this hot topic in a moment. Is AI trying to steal our jobs? So really, we just feel comfortable saying they're not. Yeah, at least in this case, maybe in some cases it's true. Assumpta Munsi: No, they're making our job easier. Joana Lisboa: but in this case it's not. If you found this interesting, don't forget to be with us next week and discuss more interesting topics. Assumpta Munsi: Follow, subscribe, leave us a message with your thoughts or your experiences.
