Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / SpaceX Starlink Maritime (for boats)
Transcript
- 0:05I'm your host will Weldon. And on today's episode, we're
- 0:07going to be talking about star like Maritime, which is starlink
- 0:11internet service, which is SpaceX, is rural Broadband,
- 0:15satellite internet, service, but for books.
- 0:19So, SpaceX tweeted something the other day that made people
- 0:22absolutely lose their minds. And I want to show you guys that
- 0:26start like Maritime allows you to connect from some of the most
- 0:29remote Waters. In the world then they send a
- 0:31link to Star like Maritime. Now mind you starlink is about
- 0:35$110 per month for a rural location, okay?
- 0:40So if you live in a cabin someplace in the woods and you
- 0:43don't have internet connectivity right now, you pay about six
- 0:47hundred dollars plus tax and other fees to get the equipment.
- 0:52So it's about $635 and then you pay about $110 per month for
- 0:59rural. Internet access.
- 1:01So if you live on the middle of nowhere, or if you have low
- 1:03connectivity, starlink is a really good fit for you most of
- 1:07the time if you have like a hot spot or something like that,
- 1:11which only gives you x amount of data per month until they slow
- 1:14you down star, only gives a really great choice but for
- 1:17maritime people. There's really not that much
- 1:20Choice out there and what they do have is extremely expensive,
- 1:24five thousand, six thousand dollars a month, you know, for
- 1:28for internet connectivity. It's not that great.
- 1:32So SpaceX sent this tweet out star like Maritime allows you to
- 1:37connect from some of the most remote Waters in the world.
- 1:40Now you really want a great internet connection when you're
- 1:43out there in the middle of nowhere.
- 1:45Basically, and if you want to connect with people, if you want
- 1:49to do work from your boat, if you need to make distress calls
- 1:53anything like that, Starlet can help you with that.
- 1:55So Elon Musk stated here after the whole Mars kettle.
- 2:00Tweeted, I love this toy like Maritime is the same exact thing
- 2:02as residential Sterling, but on a boat but it's priced. 550 x,
- 2:07hire, smart, vertical, specific pricing and Elon had to go
- 2:11through this all these tweets and tell people exactly what's
- 2:14up. He said, no, it's dual
- 2:17high-performance terminals which are important for maintaining
- 2:20the connection and choppy sea. And heavy storms, still
- 2:24obviously premium pricing, but way cheaper and faster than
- 2:27Alternatives. And this is where the pricing.
- 2:29Zup. SpaceX is paying a hundred and
- 2:31fifty thousand dollars per month for a much worse connection to
- 2:35our ships 150,000 dollars per month.
- 2:40What that's so much money. Also being ruggedized for
- 2:44Relentless salt, spray and extreme winds, and storms in
- 2:48deep ocean is not easy. So, it's not the exact same
- 2:51terminal as you get at your cabin in the woods.
- 2:55It's rubberized, it's it's more durable.
- 2:59It To withstand everything out the ocean.
- 3:03So, 150 thousand dollars a month for much worse connectivity to
- 3:08our ships. So what we have to think about
- 3:12this for a second, if your way out in the middle of the ocean,
- 3:15something happens, there are other forms of communication, of
- 3:18course. But if all of those fail and you
- 3:21have a starling terminal available to you, it's just a
- 3:25good idea to have that available.
- 3:27I want to show you what SpaceX also Stood on their star links
- 3:31site. Okay.
- 3:32These are public files and SpaceX has started like
- 3:36increases SpaceX recovery. Fleet throughput by fifty nine
- 3:40hundred percent reducing cost by 70%.
- 3:45Obviously been here a little bit for you so you can actually see
- 3:47this stuff as I'm going through it.
- 3:50But as the world's leading provider of lunch services in
- 3:52the only provider with an orbital class reusable rocket
- 3:54SpaceX operates, a fleet of ten ocean-going vessels designated
- 3:58to safely and reliably Cover rockets and spacecraft that take
- 4:02both humans and cargo to orbit. So they go on to say unreliable
- 4:10connectivity at a high cost prior to start, like SpaceX is
- 4:13maritime recovery, Fleet light on traditional geostationary
- 4:16satellite internet service vsat which came with high latency low
- 4:20bandwidth. And poor reliability systems
- 4:23were also challenging to install and required frequent
- 4:25maintenance. So basically they're saying hey
- 4:28this connectivity is not that Good.
- 4:30We've tried it. You know how bad it is.
- 4:32So we're going to make a system not only for you but for our
- 4:37uses, when we recover our Falcon 9 rocket and over 165 thousand
- 4:43dollars per month for 25 Meg, download by 25 MB, upload of
- 4:47prepaid bandwidth. Satellite internet was one of
- 4:51the top operating costs for spacex's Recovery Fleet and
- 4:54because the vehicle can generate hundreds of gigabytes of data
- 4:57SpaceX regularly played paid come For costly overage fees.
- 5:02So we've seen this before so the the views that you get from a
- 5:06falcon 9 Landing on one of the recovery vehicles, of course, I
- 5:09still love you excetera. The show is brought to you by
- 5:13backblaze, I use back place to back up my podcast.
- 5:16My video files, all of my writing stuff, and all my
- 5:19photos. And you get unlimited computer
- 5:21backup, for Macs and PCs for just $7 a month.
- 5:25You can backup your own documents photos videos,
- 5:27drawings projects. All of Your data and access your
- 5:31backed up data from anywhere in the world using the web app and
- 5:34you can access the files on your mobile to iOS Android apps all
- 5:38covered. And this is the cool part.
- 5:39This is my favorite part. You can restore it by mail, a
- 5:41hard drive will come to your house with all your data shipped
- 5:45to your door. It could come to your business
- 5:46to and you can restore return refund program so you can buy a
- 5:51hard drive restore, send the hard drive back within 30 days
- 5:54and get a full refund. So basically they ship you this
- 5:57hard drive and then you ship it back and you don't Ever pay for
- 6:00it, which is the perfect program for somebody who has huge files.
- 6:03You don't want to waste days and days, downloading terabytes and
- 6:07teraflops of data. And if you're worried about
- 6:09accidentally, deleting your files to bucks extra month, you
- 6:13can increase your retention history to one year, and I use
- 6:16it for all of my video. Files comes in super handy.
- 6:19So seven dollars plus two dollars nine dollars a month and
- 6:22you get everything backed up. He's a mind for up to a year.
- 6:25And if you use the URL, back, place.com, slash, Ilan, you get

- 6:50NASDAQ stock exchange under be lze.
- 6:53So you know they're legit back plays is committed.
- 6:55More than ever to bring an easy and affordable data storage that
- 6:59you can trust Be that person that forgot to back up their
- 7:02important files, we've got your back sign up for a free 15 day
- 7:06trial no credit card required go there sign up I you with it it's
- 7:11really powerful in his really easy to use.
- 7:13So go to back plays.com / heel on back plays.com Ilan
- 7:19backblaze.com, Ilan. We've seen these videos in
- 7:25there, not that good, you know. So so we know that that's where
- 7:29Where this is coming from it, but that's an operating cost for
- 7:32SpaceX. So, if you think about it, a
- 7:34falcon 9 launch of a starling satellite that is its
- 7:41advertising. Basically, if you see it on
- 7:42YouTube. So all of these starlink
- 7:44launches that you see on YouTube that goes into their advertising
- 7:47budget. So this hundred sixty-five
- 7:49thousand dollars a month is an operating cost for those
- 7:52advertisements. Basically.
- 7:53And also, of course they're sending the Rockets to space and
- 7:56there are satellites, Starling satellites that are going into
- 7:58orbit, so they can Provide low-cost internet to people
- 8:03low-cost satellite internet. I should say.
- 8:06I transformational improvements with star-like.
- 8:08Now, this is where it gets really juicy and good under an
- 8:11experimental license SpaceX recovery teams had the
- 8:13opportunity to test and develop starlings, Maritime terminals,
- 8:17prior to Market release with dramatic results.
- 8:19This is really cool. Fifty nine, hundred percent
- 8:22added download, download through pain, 700% edit, upload,
- 8:26throughput a 95% Reduction in latency.
- 8:31That's huge. 70% reduction in cost.
- 8:35So if you have a fleet of boats out there right now and you're
- 8:39relying on the scent and you can reduce your cost by 70%, by
- 8:45installing a starling terminal on your boat or on your Fleet,
- 8:50your hopefully, that sounds like a great business opportunity for
- 8:57people to take advantage of with a Max of Upload speed of 40
- 9:00Meg's on, each installation star like was has an able to transfer
- 9:04of a hundreds. Hundreds of gigabytes of data
- 9:06within hours of the rocket Landing that was not possible by
- 9:09the BCS system. Star like also reduce latency by
- 9:1350% to just 50 milliseconds allowing operators to respond
- 9:17faster for even greater control over the fleet SpaceX monthly
- 9:22costs. Visa 165 thousand dollars before
- 9:28starlink and with starlink fifty thousand dollars.
- 9:33So they're saving a hundred and fifteen thousand dollars just by
- 9:38using starlink at a flat rate of 5,000 dollars per vessel per
- 9:42month, SpaceX will see a nearly 70% reduction monthly internet
- 9:47cost for the fleet after implementation of starlink.
- 9:51So this is this is what I was talking about before.
- 9:53So the the starlink Satellite internet launches you'd see a
- 10:00falcon 9 come back to of course, I still love you and it looked
- 10:03like the picture on the left. You can barely see.
- 10:06It was cool that you got to see a rocket landing on a drone ship
- 10:09in the ocean. But on the right, you get to see
- 10:12the actual rocket. Like that's so much better.
- 10:17That's such a better image quality and not just image but
- 10:21voice video if you if you're going to do a video call with.
- 10:26Loved ones when you're out on the ocean, the best thing to do
- 10:32is to have a very good connectivity because you want to
- 10:35see your kids, you want to see your family, you want to see the
- 10:37other people in your life that are doing the cool things that
- 10:40they're doing and you want to see them in great detail.
- 10:43So that's where the star like for maritime comes into play.
- 10:48So if you're interested in this stuff, I go to Star like.com,
- 10:53it's great for Rural internet, it can save you.
- 10:56Some money over time. And also, I mean, if you have a
- 10:59fleet of boats, this is probably your best bet at this point.
- 11:03I mean, it's saved SpaceX 70% off their internet bill just
- 11:09because they installed starlink 70%, from 165 thousand dollars
- 11:14to fifty thousand dollars. That's a huge reduction in cost.
- 11:19That's that's insane. That's so much money.
- 11:22So, anyway, let me know what you think.
- 11:24Would you get starlink on your boat?
- 11:26If you have a boat, that would be pretty cool to.
- 11:28I don't have a boat myself but it would be pretty neat to have
- 11:31a starlink terminal on your boat.
- 11:33I don't think it's useful for small boats and it's kind of
- 11:38cost prohibitive for like a smaller Fleet or you know like a
- 11:42party boat or something like that does don't get it for your
- 11:45party about this. Use your phone if you have to
- 11:47but if you're going out deep in the ocean you know like these
- 11:51recovery vessels do it seems like a really good business
- 11:54option to have the Save yourself 70,000 or 70 percent reduction
- 11:59in monthly cost, that's pretty great.
- 12:01So let me know what you think in the comments.
- 12:03Also, make sure to hit the sub button, make sure to hit the
- 12:05like button, that's about it for today.
- 12:07Thanks everybody take care of yourselves and each other.
- 12:09I'll see you next time on the space news pod.
