Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Konnor Griffin Called Up! Who's Hot & Who's Not
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:12Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with Alana Rizzo and Alta. We can't
- 0:16Speaker 1: always say this when we open the show, but we
- 0:18Speaker 1: have big news this morning.
- 0:21Speaker 2: It is big news.
- 0:22Speaker 3: I wonder if it's just a week too late, but
- 0:23Speaker 3: it's good news nonetheless. Ken, if you are Connor Griffin,
- 0:27Speaker 3: the top prospect is baseball is getting a call up
- 0:30Speaker 3: to the Big Weaks.
- 0:32Speaker 1: He is nineteen years old, doesn't turn twenty until later
- 0:35Speaker 1: this month. This is a kid who I wrote about
- 0:37Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago, quoting a team as saying,
- 0:41Speaker 1: in their model, the statistical projection model, they have him
- 0:45Speaker 1: as the top position player in baseball relative to the
- 0:48Speaker 1: surplus value he would provide, and Paul Skeins as the
- 0:52Speaker 1: top pitcher. This team also had him as a top shortstop,
- 0:56Speaker 1: even though he has yet to play an inning in
- 0:58Speaker 1: the major leagues. Again, we're talking about surplus value. Now
- 1:02Speaker 1: people are asking when is that extension coming. They've been
- 1:04Speaker 1: negotiating it, We've heard a lot about it. It won't
- 1:08Speaker 1: come if it does, it all, and I expect it
- 1:10Speaker 1: to until after he makes his debut Friday. Why because
- 1:15Speaker 1: once a player is in the major leagues. Once a
- 1:18Speaker 1: rookie is in the major leagues, and at that point,
- 1:20Speaker 1: if he signs an extension after that, his team becomes
- 1:24Speaker 1: eligible to receive a Prospect Promotion Incentive pick. And the
- 1:28Speaker 1: Pirates are doing this in time, promoting him in time,
- 1:31Speaker 1: and likely doing the extension in time to remain eligible
- 1:35Speaker 1: for that PPI pick. If you remember, they didn't do
- 1:38Speaker 1: that with schemes. They kept him in the minors longer,
- 1:41Speaker 1: and yet he qualified for a full year of service
- 1:44Speaker 1: time anyway, even though of course he was not in
- 1:47Speaker 1: the big leagues for a full year, but he won
- 1:49Speaker 1: Rookie of the Year and that is what did it
- 1:51Speaker 1: for him. So they didn't get the pick, they cost
- 1:53Speaker 1: themselves a year of service time. With Griffin, they're going
- 1:56Speaker 1: to be in a much better place. This is a
- 1:58Speaker 1: kid Alana who looks like physically a young cow Ripken
- 2:02Speaker 1: body type, and he tore up the minor leagues. I
- 2:06Speaker 1: want to show you what he did statistically in the
- 2:08Speaker 1: minor leagues. Baseball America's JJ Cooper pointed out this morning,
- 2:11Speaker 1: this is one of the great minor league slash lines ever.
- 2:14Speaker 1: One hundred and twenty seven games last two years, three
- 2:17Speaker 1: thirty six four to twenty five thirty. That's the slash line.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Twenty one home runs in five hundred and eighty four
- 2:23Speaker 1: played appearances, and oh sixty eight stolen bases.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Alanna, I tell you what, he is a player that
- 2:31Speaker 3: already has a lot of eyes on him with great
- 2:33Speaker 3: expectations to follow.
- 2:34Speaker 2: He enjoyed speaking with him when he was on.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Foul territory when aj Pierzinski was at Buckos camp a
- 2:39Speaker 3: couple of weeks ago. Ken, why now instead of just
- 2:43Speaker 3: allowing him to break camp with the big club? What
- 2:45Speaker 3: difference does nine ten days make a.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Lot of This is a very good question, And in
- 2:50Speaker 1: my view, I don't know why they held him down.
- 2:53Speaker 1: They're going to say I know this, I've heard this
- 2:55Speaker 1: from people there ready. Sending him down kind of relaxed him.
- 2:59Speaker 1: He got going a trip and now it's time. It
- 3:02Speaker 1: would have been fine time nine days ago. And yes,
- 3:05Speaker 1: they're doing it in time again so they can qualify
- 3:08Speaker 1: for that draft pick if he wins Rookie of the Year,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and that's no guarantee in a league with JJ Weatherhole
- 3:14Speaker 1: and South Stewart and other rookies also making a strong impact.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Already in the National League. But at the same time,
- 3:21Speaker 1: this kid has all the potential in the world. He
- 3:24Speaker 1: could be a difference maker for the Pirates, and I
- 3:26Speaker 1: kind of equate it to what's going on with the
- 3:29Speaker 1: Tigers now. The Tigers did not have a good series
- 3:31Speaker 1: in Arizona, but Kevin McGonagall has made a major difference
- 3:35Speaker 1: in their offense. Connor Griffin can do the same for Pittsburgh.
- 3:39Speaker 1: It's a lot to ask, of course already, but this
- 3:43Speaker 1: is a player they need. They spent money in the offseason,
- 3:46Speaker 1: they're actually trying. If you're actually trying, Connor Griffin has
- 3:50Speaker 1: to be.
- 3:50Speaker 3: On your team, and guys, don't forget to get your
- 3:52Speaker 3: questions in for Grill and Ken.
- 3:54Speaker 2: We're going to do that after the break.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, Ken, you said that they're
- 3:57Speaker 3: likely going to announce an extension for him after he
- 4:01Speaker 3: makes his major league debut. How close in your opinion
- 4:05Speaker 3: are the two sides on getting the amount that they're
- 4:08Speaker 3: going to want. I'm hearing that they want something alla
- 4:10Speaker 3: Roman Anthony type of contract in the one thirty range.
- 4:14Speaker 2: What more can you tell us about what he may get?
- 4:16Speaker 1: Right? Buster only reported that yesterday for ESPN that that
- 4:19Speaker 1: is the ask by Anthony. I'm sorry by Griffin's camp
- 4:23Speaker 1: one thirty or so. I don't know that they're that close,
- 4:27Speaker 1: but I don't know that they're that far apart. So
- 4:29Speaker 1: here's why I say that. Haven't heard in recent days
- 4:33Speaker 1: that this is heated up, but now I do expect
- 4:35Speaker 1: it to heat up. And obviously they've been negotiating for
- 4:38Speaker 1: quite some time. Each side knows the other's position. If
- 4:42Speaker 1: indeed the number is one thirty and the Pirates are
- 4:45Speaker 1: offering one ten, let's go. No need to mess around here.
- 4:49Speaker 1: It's going to be an eight year deal probably, and
- 4:51Speaker 1: we're talking about what two million per year or something
- 4:53Speaker 1: like that. So I don't expect this to be a problem.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I do expect it to get done in the way
- 5:00Speaker 1: of the Colt Emerson deal this week and to a
- 5:03Speaker 1: lesser extent, the Cooper Pratt deal. It's extension time, and
- 5:06Speaker 1: once the guy's in the big leagues, that's the time
- 5:08Speaker 1: to do it. We saw that last year with the
- 5:10Speaker 1: Red Sox and Christian Campbell didn't work out, or at
- 5:12Speaker 1: least hasn't worked out yet, but you do it after
- 5:16Speaker 1: they debut. In that way, you retain your right to
- 5:20Speaker 1: get that pick if the player is Rookie of the Year.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that PPI that you were talking about. Let's get
- 5:25Speaker 3: into the rest of the league powered by Game Changer.
- 5:28Speaker 3: More on Game Changer in a moment, can you briefly
- 5:30Speaker 3: mentioned that some extensions have already happened and you also
- 5:33Speaker 3: said on your athletic report that you expect more extensions
- 5:37Speaker 3: to be coming into the days, the weeks, and the months. Now,
- 5:41Speaker 3: why are some Major League Baseball teams ken willing to
- 5:44Speaker 3: offer long term deals to unproven top prospects and some
- 5:48Speaker 3: just don't seem to be able to do that or
- 5:50Speaker 3: want to do that?
- 5:50Speaker 1: Rather, I would say the majority do want to do that,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and the reason they want to do that a lot
- 5:56Speaker 1: It is ultimately to save money, and with the collector
- 6:00Speaker 1: of bargaining agreement expiring, there are motivations along those lines
- 6:03Speaker 1: as well. You always, as an owner want cost certainty.
- 6:07Speaker 1: There is a possibility in the next CVA that the
- 6:10Speaker 1: length of time before a player becomes a free agent
- 6:13Speaker 1: will be reduced. That would be something that Major League
- 6:16Speaker 1: Baseball could dangle in order to get the players to
- 6:19Speaker 1: potentially agree to a salary cap. So if you're locking
- 6:22Speaker 1: up a guy now for additional years. Well, if crea
- 6:26Speaker 1: agency is going to four or five years, I'm not
- 6:29Speaker 1: saying it's going to I'm just saying this is a
- 6:30Speaker 1: potential outcome, then you're winning in an even bigger way.
- 6:35Speaker 1: So it's all about cost certainty. It's all about getting
- 6:38Speaker 1: players to sign below market deals. Some teams are less willing.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Buster Posey in my article is quoted as saying, hey,
- 6:46Speaker 1: I'm not so sure about this. It's a little risky.
- 6:48Speaker 1: And it is. There are players that ultimately do not succeed.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Scott Kingery, Evan White, Jonathan Singleton. There have been players
- 6:56Speaker 1: who signed these extensions and ultimately did not prove the money.
- 7:00Speaker 1: But the vast majority, from ronald' kunya to Josemirez to
- 7:05Speaker 1: all kinds of players, the vast majority it does payoff.
- 7:09Speaker 1: And that's why teams are so willing to do it.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And I trust even with a Roman Anthony one hundred
- 7:14Speaker 1: and thirty million, Okay, big deal. Well, Roman Anthony should
- 7:18Speaker 1: prove worth that and much more. And that's what the
- 7:20Speaker 1: owners are looking for. They're looking for the surplus value,
- 7:24Speaker 1: the production of the player to exceed what he is
- 7:27Speaker 1: getting paid.
- 7:28Speaker 3: A lot of folks think in Roman Anthony perhaps left
- 7:31Speaker 3: a lot of money on the table Ken taking that
- 7:33Speaker 3: one hundred and thirty million dollar deal.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Well.

- 7:44Speaker 3: And one final section that we're starting here on the
- 7:46Speaker 3: show with the Lead Ken is who's hot and who
- 7:49Speaker 3: is not?
- 7:50Speaker 2: Team wise?
- 7:51Speaker 3: The hot starts and the below average slow starts for teams?
- 7:56Speaker 2: Who are we starting with?
- 7:57Speaker 1: All right, allta, Now, We're going to take a mature,
- 8:00Speaker 1: measured approach here. We're one week into the season. We're
- 8:03Speaker 1: not going to get carried away. But I just want
- 8:05Speaker 1: to point out some things that at least have stood
- 8:08Speaker 1: out in the first week. Number one, who else the
- 8:11Speaker 1: Milwaukee Brewers. Right away, they are right out of the gate.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Fifteen stolen bases, most in the majors in six games,
- 8:18Speaker 1: averaging seven point five runs per game in six games.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Strikeouts by their pitching staff seventy six in six games.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Here come the brew Crew yet again, coming off two
- 8:29Speaker 1: strong performances, one against the White Sox and then the
- 8:32Speaker 1: other against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees pitching it's
- 8:35Speaker 1: been incredible. They've allowed six runs six runs in six games,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and they did it on the road in San Francisco
- 8:43Speaker 1: and Seattle. Pretty impressive. Houston Astros lost their first two
- 8:47Speaker 1: to the Angels, if you remember, at home, and since
- 8:50Speaker 1: then have won five straight against the Angels and the
- 8:53Speaker 1: Red Sox, averaging eight point six runs per game. We
- 8:57Speaker 1: knew their offense was good, their rotations, I wouldn't say
- 9:00Speaker 1: it's a work in progress, but I want to see
- 9:02Speaker 1: more out of that group. Then they're the Texas Rangers,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and this, to me might be the biggest surprise is
- 9:09Speaker 1: not the right word, but the biggest statement made by
- 9:12Speaker 1: a team this week four and two on the road
- 9:14Speaker 1: in Philadelphia and Baltimore. Andrew McCutcheon, Danny Jansen, Brandon Nimo,
- 9:19Speaker 1: new veterans joining this team. They've brought a certain energy.
- 9:23Speaker 1: This team has a tremendous rotation. They might be in
- 9:26Speaker 1: skip Shrewmacher's first season better than people thought. And finally
- 9:30Speaker 1: let's go to Miami, the Miami Marlins five and one. Now,
- 9:34Speaker 1: admittedly it's against the Rockies and the White Sox, so
- 9:37Speaker 1: you got to put a little bit of an asterisk
- 9:39Speaker 1: on it and we'll know more after they go to
- 9:41Speaker 1: New York to open the Yankees home schedule against the
- 9:44Speaker 1: New York Yankees. But the Marlins with Sandy al Contra,
- 9:47Speaker 1: they're pitching staff. I have thought all along they have
- 9:50Speaker 1: a chance to be somewhat of a surprise team. Say
- 9:53Speaker 1: nothing yet to diminish that thought. So those are the
- 9:57Speaker 1: hot ones along, at least so far.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Yes, Saniel Contrero with a complete game shutout Kennon in
- 10:03Speaker 3: front of about sixty six hundred people that didn't really
- 10:06Speaker 3: get to see, unfortunately, his greatness on the mound. What
- 10:09Speaker 3: about those teams that are not hot right now? Let's
- 10:12Speaker 3: start with the Boston Red Sox.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Let's start with the Boston Red Sox, and I've been
- 10:17Speaker 1: worried about their offense and yet to start the season,
- 10:20Speaker 1: they haven't pitched all that well either. Check this out.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Twenty eighth in run scored, twenty sixth in ERA. That's
- 10:28Speaker 1: a bottom five team in both categories. Not great for
- 10:31Speaker 1: the Boston Red Sox. The Sacramento West, Sacramento, Las Vegas,
- 10:35Speaker 1: Oakland as they are one in five now they are
- 10:38Speaker 1: one in five even though Shay Langeleres has hit five
- 10:42Speaker 1: home runs to lead the Majors. They're one in five. Also,
- 10:45Speaker 1: they had a tough schedule to start in Toronto, in Atlanta,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I'll give them a little bit of a break. They're
- 10:50Speaker 1: gonna be good, at least offensively. And then two teams
- 10:53Speaker 1: in the NL West under new managers, the Padres and
- 10:56Speaker 1: the Giants, both started off two and four, just got
- 10:59Speaker 1: done with the series against each other. Padre's rotation questions,
- 11:03Speaker 1: no doubt. Giants, I'm still not convinced totally by their offense.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Certainly their bullpen is a problem. So we'll see how
- 11:11Speaker 1: these teams play. And then I'll look at the Phillies
- 11:13Speaker 1: and the Mets. Now they're going to be fine, but
- 11:16Speaker 1: both started the season three and three, annoying their fans
- 11:19Speaker 1: to say the least. And the Phillies they were home
- 11:22Speaker 1: against Texas and Washington. Finally got a win yesterday against Washington,
- 11:26Speaker 1: the otherwise would have been two and four. And then
- 11:29Speaker 1: the Mets they opened it home against Pittsburgh and then
- 11:31Speaker 1: go to Saint Louis, two teams they theoretically should be
- 11:34Speaker 1: able to handle and yet go only three and three.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Yeah, very uninspired baseball. If you're looking at the Phillies
- 11:42Speaker 3: and the Mets. A lot of teams that we didn't
- 11:44Speaker 3: think would be slow starters are in fact on that
- 11:47Speaker 3: Not So hotless. We're gonna have much more to come
- 11:49Speaker 3: on Fair Territory with Ken Rosensal. Don't forget to get
- 11:52Speaker 3: your questions in. We'll be back with Gorilla and Ken
- 11:55Speaker 3: right after this.
- 11:56Speaker 4: This episode is brought to you by Fox One.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Go get that new app.

- 12:07Speaker 5: and get to a game. But well, and there, I'll
- 12:09Speaker 5: still have my Fox one app. I'll have MLB, the shows,
- 12:12Speaker 5: the great shows that Fox has, college football that I love,

- 12:21Speaker 5: to watch on an app. Fox one has it and

- 12:42Speaker 3: Now, all right, let's get to some Gorilla and Ken
- 12:50Speaker 3: questions from our fans, our viewers, the chat group.
- 12:53Speaker 2: We appreciate your participation. Zay Z Reviews. Has this one
- 12:57Speaker 2: to kick things off?
- 12:57Speaker 3: Ken, It's been a disaster start in Boston, just talking
- 13:00Speaker 3: about that. In your opinion, do you think Breslo or
- 13:03Speaker 3: Cora lasts till the end of the week that's a
- 13:07Speaker 3: little rough before they are fired?
- 13:09Speaker 2: And is their.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Season over come on? It's been six games these reviews.
- 13:16Speaker 1: All right, Alana. First of all, I am confident that
- 13:19Speaker 1: Alex Cora and Craig Breslow will retain their jobs through
- 13:23Speaker 1: this week and after this week, and even through the
- 13:26Speaker 1: first half of the season, even the entire season. Now,
- 13:30Speaker 1: the Red Sox are an interesting case study. The problem
- 13:33Speaker 1: I've had with their off season has been that they
- 13:36Speaker 1: essentially are telling Roman Anthony without telling him this, Hey man,
- 13:41Speaker 1: you've got to be David Ortiz. You've got to be
- 13:43Speaker 1: what David Ortiz was to the previous teams. Now they
- 13:45Speaker 1: would say that's not true. We've got William Obreu, the
- 13:48Speaker 1: one guy who's off to a hot start. We've got others,
- 13:50Speaker 1: will Wilson Contraras in the mix, of course, other good hitters.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Trevor Story. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. You've lost Evers,
- 13:57Speaker 1: you've lost Bregman, and in my view, they still haven't
- 14:01Speaker 1: found the additional thumper that they need, and that is
- 14:06Speaker 1: the deficiency I see in the team. We'll see maybe
- 14:08Speaker 1: he plays out really well for them, and with Durand
- 14:11Speaker 1: and all the different pieces that they have, maybe they
- 14:15Speaker 1: ultimately put together a really dynamic offense. It just seems
- 14:19Speaker 1: to me they're asking a lot of some young players
- 14:21Speaker 1: and that's not always a good equation.
- 14:24Speaker 3: And Ken for a team that led the league and
- 14:26Speaker 3: errors last year, wanting to clean that up. So far
- 14:28Speaker 3: that has not been the case defensively for the Socks.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Sarah Harmon, nineteen seventy four. Ken, now that Connor Griffin
- 14:34Speaker 3: is coming up to the show, who do you see
- 14:37Speaker 3: being the next couple of high impact prospects who will
- 14:40Speaker 3: make the jump?
- 14:42Speaker 1: Wow? Good question, Sarah, And Frankly, most of the big
- 14:45Speaker 1: ones are in the majors right now, and we've seen
- 14:48Speaker 1: this Weather, Holt, McGonagall, Stewart the latter right down the line. Now,
- 14:54Speaker 1: there are some others I'm sure that will get promoted
- 14:56Speaker 1: this year and we'll see them, but I'm not sure
- 15:00Speaker 1: they were who necessarily is next in line. Colt Emerson
- 15:03Speaker 1: from Seattle would be one to watch for sure. Now
- 15:06Speaker 1: he just got the extension eight years, ninety five million,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and he is in a spot where the Mariners have
- 15:13Speaker 1: Jp Crawford a shortstop. They're set pretty much around the
- 15:16Speaker 1: diamond and there will be an opening at some point.
- 15:20Speaker 1: I don't know when it will be. They've got Brendan
- 15:22Speaker 1: Donovan now on the team, but Colt Emerson was not
- 15:25Speaker 1: signed to an eight year, ninety five million dollars or
- 15:28Speaker 1: contract to languish in the minor leagues. He'll be there
- 15:31Speaker 1: at some point.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Steve Parlay Parlee seventy six, forty eight, Hey, Ken, Should
- 15:36Speaker 3: the Jays be worried about the starting rotation after losing
- 15:40Speaker 3: Cody Ponce on Monday and three others now on the
- 15:43Speaker 3: il from.
- 15:44Speaker 1: An injury perspective, yes, no question. And Beaver's not yet there,
- 15:49Speaker 1: Barrios is not yet there. They've been without you Savage
- 15:52Speaker 1: of course, and now Ponce, but some of those pitchers
- 15:56Speaker 1: are going to return in due time. And what we've
- 15:59Speaker 1: seen so far from Gossman, from Cease, from Scherzer, it's
- 16:04Speaker 1: been pretty good. Eric Lauer as well, it's been really
- 16:07Speaker 1: good in fact, and the strikeout potential of that staff
- 16:11Speaker 1: is much greater than it's been in the past. The rotation,
- 16:13Speaker 1: I mean, and assuming some of these guys get healthy,
- 16:17Speaker 1: Pince I know might be out for the year. They
- 16:19Speaker 1: should be.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Okay, it was so tough to watch when he went down. Okay,
- 16:22Speaker 3: another question here. This is a super chat. We appreciate
- 16:25Speaker 3: it very much, Daniel Doctor, nineteen nineteen five bucks for
- 16:28Speaker 3: the show. Jim Bowden said he'd take Yankees' top four
- 16:30Speaker 3: prospects for Skeins, of course, of the Pirates last year.
- 16:34Speaker 3: If he were the Pirates, this person, Daniel disagrees. I
- 16:37Speaker 3: want MLB proven talent. He'd like to know your thoughts
- 16:40Speaker 3: on it.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I want MLB proven talent too, and that package would
- 16:45Speaker 1: have to start with Cam Schlitler. And the Yankees are
- 16:48Speaker 1: not trading Cam Schlitler, who might be a lesser version
- 16:52Speaker 1: of Paul Skeins, and that might even be selling him short.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Cam Schlittler looks really good. So yes, the Pirates are
- 16:58Speaker 1: going to be tempted in the next couple of years
- 17:00Speaker 1: with all kinds of packages for Skiens. They were, I'm
- 17:03Speaker 1: sure tempted in the offseason as well. But with the
- 17:06Speaker 1: promotion of Griffin, with the additions of A Hearne and
- 17:09Speaker 1: Brandon Lowe and a Zuna and all the things that
- 17:12Speaker 1: they are doing. Now, what they are trying to do
- 17:16Speaker 1: as best as the Pirates can is win with Skeens,
- 17:19Speaker 1: and that should be their motivation for at least the
- 17:21Speaker 1: next few years. Now, once you get closer to free agency,
- 17:24Speaker 1: if the team is not what you want it to be, yes,
- 17:27Speaker 1: of course you consider a trade because most likely under
- 17:30Speaker 1: the current system anywhere, you're not going to resign him,
- 17:33Speaker 1: so the Yankees can offer their whole farm system, the Dodgers,
- 17:38Speaker 1: these teams are going to do that. But if I'm
- 17:40Speaker 1: the Pirates, I'm trying to win with what is absolutely
- 17:43Speaker 1: a unicorn of a starting pitcher.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Kenn This is not a question in the chat. This
- 17:48Speaker 3: is more for me. I guess why the need to
- 17:50Speaker 3: or the want to sign Connor Griffin to a long
- 17:53Speaker 3: term extension, But it's not there for Paul Skeens. Is
- 17:56Speaker 3: that an agent situation is that let's get this kid
- 17:59Speaker 3: to free agency because we know he's going to get
- 18:01Speaker 3: a lot more money. I mean, why does it make
- 18:04Speaker 3: sense for Connor Griffin, but it doesn't make sense for
- 18:06Speaker 3: the best picture in the game.
- 18:08Speaker 1: I'm sure the Pirates would love to sign Paul Skins
- 18:10Speaker 1: to an extension, but it takes two to tango, and
- 18:13Speaker 1: clearly the player has to be motivated to do it.
- 18:16Speaker 1: And also keep in mind with Paul Skins, he's going
- 18:20Speaker 1: to want a wait for Schoobls deal right and beyond that,
- 18:24Speaker 1: it's going to cost three or four times what Connor
- 18:27Speaker 1: Griffin is going to cost to retain Paul Skins. Maybe
- 18:30Speaker 1: that's a little bit of an exaggeration. He's not even
- 18:33Speaker 1: eligible for arbitration yet, but you get what I'm saying.
- 18:35Speaker 1: The free agent years alone would be forty five million
- 18:38Speaker 1: fifty million a year, I would think. So the Pirates
- 18:42Speaker 1: have money that they can spend, or at least that
- 18:45Speaker 1: they're willing to spend. I don't know that they're willing
- 18:48Speaker 1: to spend what it would be what would be necessary
- 18:52Speaker 1: for them to retain Paul Skin's.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Long term Zaz Reviews once again.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Final question on Grill and Ken here. With the lockout
- 18:59Speaker 3: looming at the end of the season, could we see
- 19:02Speaker 3: teams willing to trade big contracts at the deadline? Ken
- 19:06Speaker 3: so they're off the books come to lockout.
- 19:09Speaker 1: It's a good question, and I would think that you
- 19:14Speaker 1: might see some of that. But keep in mind, and
- 19:17Speaker 1: I've heard this from a couple of teams in recent days,
- 19:20Speaker 1: you can't assume anything with the CBA. You can't assume
- 19:23Speaker 1: there's going to be a salary cap. You can't assume
- 19:25Speaker 1: there's not going to be a salary cap. You can't
- 19:27Speaker 1: assume we're going to be playing in twenty twenty seven
- 19:29Speaker 1: the entire season. So essentially teams are operating in the dark.
- 19:33Speaker 1: And if I were a GM, and of course I'm not,
- 19:37Speaker 1: but I would think the way most of them are
- 19:39Speaker 1: thinking is that, you know, we have no idea, so
- 19:43Speaker 1: let's operate as we would normally operate. And yes, if
- 19:47Speaker 1: you want to clear big contracts if you're a bad
- 19:50Speaker 1: team or you're a disappointing team, of course, but you
- 19:52Speaker 1: would be doing that anyway. So I don't know that
- 19:55Speaker 1: the expiration of the CBA on December first has a
- 19:58Speaker 1: meaningful impact on that.
- 20:00Speaker 3: All right, thanks everybody for getting those questions in. For
- 20:02Speaker 3: Girl and Ken, We're going to talk about Dude and
- 20:05Speaker 3: Dork of the Week right after this break.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Bet I'm jam account holders today, how about an any
- 20:11Speaker 4: sport parlay boost token. You can score a bigger payout
- 20:14Speaker 4: if your wager with that token. Hits tokens can be
- 20:16Speaker 4: used on parlays and on same game parlays. Gambling problem
- 20:19Speaker 4: or concerned, there's help called one eight hundred gambler.
- 20:23Speaker 5: Dude, dude, dude.
- 20:31Speaker 2: All right, Ken, I'll have you go first, of course,
- 20:33Speaker 2: on your Dude of the week. Who is it.
- 20:36Speaker 1: We've been talking a lot about prospects, and this guy
- 20:39Speaker 1: was not necessarily a top one hundred. He wasn't even
- 20:42Speaker 1: a top ten in his organization, even a top twenty.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I'm talking about Jose Fernandez of the Arizona Diamondbacks. This
- 20:49Speaker 1: dude gets called up and on Tuesday, in his major
- 20:52Speaker 1: league debut, hole run off Casey Maize in the fourth inning,
- 20:56Speaker 1: and then with two outs in the eighth, the Diamondbacks
- 20:59Speaker 1: down by run to the Tigers, a two out, three run,
- 21:03Speaker 1: go ahead shot off Kenlee Jansen. Welcome to the major leagues,
- 21:07Speaker 1: Jose Fernandez, and you are the Dude of the week.
- 21:10Speaker 2: I love that.
- 21:11Speaker 3: I see that, and I raise you two gentlemen that
- 21:13Speaker 3: are playing this game right now, the game that we love.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Ken with heavy hearts.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Dominic Smith, of course of the Atlanta Braves, just recently
- 21:22Speaker 3: lost his mom. Hits a grand slam as a brave.
- 21:26Speaker 3: He is certainly my dude of the week, obviously thinking
- 21:29Speaker 3: about mama round in the bas is good for him.
- 21:31Speaker 3: I also want to talk about Josh Low kind of
- 21:34Speaker 3: says his mom, of course passed away unfortunately after dealing
- 21:39Speaker 3: with brain cancer. He and Nathaniel Lowe, of course, their mom,
- 21:43Speaker 3: Wendy passed away, and he hit a three run home
- 21:47Speaker 3: run his first is an angel, kind of points to
- 21:49Speaker 3: the sky pounds us just that one certainly was for
- 21:52Speaker 3: his mom as well. So Dominic Smith and Josh Low,
- 21:55Speaker 3: you are my dudes of the week.
- 21:57Speaker 2: All right.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Time now for our dorks of the week. We'll be
- 22:00Speaker 3: right back after this front end, all.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Right, Ken, who is your Who's your dork of the week?
- 22:11Speaker 1: All right? I can't believe I'm saying this, and I
- 22:13Speaker 1: trust that this will be the only time this player
- 22:16Speaker 1: is ever dork of the week. Francisco Lindor is actually
- 22:19Speaker 1: one of my favorites. He should be one of everyone's favorites,
- 22:22Speaker 1: but he had a really bad day. It would have
- 22:25Speaker 1: been kind of a rough start for him obviously coming
- 22:28Speaker 1: off the Hamad surgery. That's possibly the reason Corbyn Carrol
- 22:32Speaker 1: had the same surgery. He's on fire anyway, Francis Hill.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Lindor on Wednesday gets picked off, and not only that,
- 22:39Speaker 1: he forgets the number of outs and he costs his
- 22:42Speaker 1: pitcher a few pitches Freddy Peralta, and he said afterward,
- 22:47Speaker 1: he owned up to it, said that was unacceptable, and
- 22:50Speaker 1: he's right, obviously, he can't forget the number of outs.
- 22:52Speaker 1: The pickoff the Mets were more forgiving of because they thought, well,
- 22:56Speaker 1: he's trying to get a lead. He was stealing on
- 22:58Speaker 1: the pitch with Soto up and didn't work out, okay.
- 23:01Speaker 1: But for Lindor, a guy who is so savvy, so
- 23:05Speaker 1: good at playing the game is what baseball people say.
- 23:08Speaker 1: He is so instinctive on the field. It was just
- 23:12Speaker 1: shocking to see. And I'm sure, like I said, he
- 23:15Speaker 1: will not be dork of the Week ever again. But
- 23:18Speaker 1: he is dork of the week for that and not
- 23:20Speaker 1: for any of the other things. Met fans are accusing
- 23:22Speaker 1: him of the problems with Soto and all of that. No, no,
- 23:26Speaker 1: no out. Stuff on the field is what matters, and
- 23:29Speaker 1: what mattered here yesterday was meaningful in the game.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a little bit of a joke there.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Some folks in our chat were saying that he got
- 23:36Speaker 3: picked off on purpose, Ken, so he could rob one
- 23:39Speaker 3: Soto of an RBI because they hate each other that much. Obviously,
- 23:43Speaker 3: that is it was a rookie mistake, a boneheaded move
- 23:47Speaker 3: for a veteran player. All right, My dork of the
- 23:49Speaker 3: week is the Boston Red Sox as an organization as
- 23:52Speaker 3: a whole. How in the world do you win your
- 23:54Speaker 3: first game and then lose a five straight. I'm not
- 23:57Speaker 3: the only one that's wondering Ken, because ris x Dash
- 24:00Speaker 3: eighteen in our chat says, health, what's going on with
- 24:04Speaker 3: the Red Sox?
- 24:05Speaker 2: Ken? What is going on with the Red Sox? Kenny?
- 24:07Speaker 2: They can't get off to the slow start.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Garrett Crochet has not been good at Dykin Park, obviously
- 24:13Speaker 3: home of the Houston Astros.
- 24:14Speaker 2: That's who you count on.
- 24:15Speaker 3: And they're not even winning with Crochet on the bump
- 24:17Speaker 3: the second time through.
- 24:19Speaker 1: It's a slow start. I'm not sure I read anything
- 24:22Speaker 1: more into it. And as we had that earlier question
- 24:24Speaker 1: about Cora and Breslow getting fired, No, that's not happening again.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I'll repeat myself. I am concerned, as I said earlier,
- 24:31Speaker 1: about their offense, and I'm just not sure it's going
- 24:35Speaker 1: to play out the way they think it's going to
- 24:36Speaker 1: play out. But they're pitching enter the season supposedly as
- 24:41Speaker 1: a strength. I still expect it to be a strength
- 24:43Speaker 1: with Crochet. I expect Rangers Suarez to be really good,
- 24:46Speaker 1: and I expect some other things as well to happen
- 24:48Speaker 1: with that staff that will click. But yeah, it's a
- 24:51Speaker 1: slow start, and in markets like New York and Philadelphia
- 24:55Speaker 1: and Boston, when there's a slow start, it's not the
- 24:57Speaker 1: same as it is in a market West Sacramento, just
- 25:01Speaker 1: to name one.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Yeah, West Sacramento. I love that.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Yes, and they are off today the Red Sox are
- 25:07Speaker 3: they finally start a homestand tomorrow they need they need
- 25:10Speaker 3: something good cooking at Fenway. Well, if you're watching on TV,
- 25:13Speaker 3: we are going to see you guys next week. Thank
- 25:15Speaker 3: you so much for being here. We have a couple
- 25:16Speaker 3: more minutes for the YouTube crowd right after this. All right,
- 25:26Speaker 3: if you're still with us, that means you're watching us
- 25:27Speaker 3: on YouTube. Thanks so much for being here. Ken, What
- 25:30Speaker 3: is your game upcoming this weekend? And hopefully you get
- 25:34Speaker 3: it in with no delays.
- 25:36Speaker 1: My game is in Cleveland in obviously progressive field, and
- 25:41Speaker 1: the Cubs are visiting the Guardians, and it's an interesting
- 25:44Speaker 1: game in any number of ways. One because the Cubs,
- 25:47Speaker 1: of course, have invested a ton into their team four
- 25:50Speaker 1: hundred and thirty one million combined for Bregman, for Horner
- 25:53Speaker 1: and Pete Crow Armstrong. The Guardians, of course are doing
- 25:56Speaker 1: their low revenue thing. They did hardly anything in the
- 26:00Speaker 1: off season. But one of the reasons that they were
- 26:02Speaker 1: so inactive is because they want to keep creating opportunity
- 26:06Speaker 1: for younger players. Chase the Laughter pretty good young player
- 26:10Speaker 1: from what we've seen so far for home runs. Hopefully
- 26:12Speaker 1: his foot is okay. Did not play yesterday. He is
- 26:15Speaker 1: expected back. The Guardian's home opener is tomorrow, and yes,
- 26:18Speaker 1: there is weather threats all weekend, but we'll see what happens.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And one more point about the Cubs, and we go
- 26:24Speaker 1: back to the Cooper Pratt extension with Milwaukee. People ask
- 26:27Speaker 1: why are they doing? Is this kid at a six
- 26:29Speaker 1: ninety one ops in Double A hasn't shown he can
- 26:32Speaker 1: hit even in Double A, and he's getting fifty million dollars. Well,
- 26:37Speaker 1: the Brewer's logic is, we can't spend like the Cubs.
- 26:40Speaker 1: We have to place smaller bets. That's what the Cooper
- 26:44Speaker 1: Pratt extension is. That's what the Jackson Curio extension was.
- 26:47Speaker 1: We'll see how it works out. But the Brewers always
- 26:50Speaker 1: seem to figure it out. It's amazing to me every year,
- 26:54Speaker 1: including this year. I thought maybe this is the year
- 26:58Speaker 1: they're not going to be very good. And granted they've
- 27:01Speaker 1: played weaker opponents, but they're off to a great start
- 27:04Speaker 1: and they look like they're going to be a very
- 27:06Speaker 1: dangerous team again.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Yeah, five and one, Ken, and they're doing it without
- 27:10Speaker 3: Jackson Trail right now, and Andrew Vaughan as well, both
- 27:13Speaker 3: on the il. Well, that's it for us. Foul Territory
- 27:16Speaker 3: is next. Chris Catillo, JJ Cooper, and Isaac zout joined
- 27:19Speaker 3: AJ and Kratz and Scott Ron Dodgers Territory with myself
- 27:23Speaker 3: and Clinton CS follows that. Ken Rosenthal is back on
- 27:27Speaker 3: Monday with fair Territory.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Have a great weekend. Everybody will see then
