Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Democrats furious over BILLIONS in grant cuts to major agency
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Sunday Night. In America, solar companies and
- 0:03Speaker 1: labor unions are suing the EPA after the Trump administration
- 0:07Speaker 1: pushed for deregulation. The EPA cut twenty nine billion dollars
- 0:11Speaker 1: in grants and proposed changing regulations on the use of
- 0:14Speaker 1: certain chemicals. And is there a role for the EPA
- 0:18Speaker 1: now that China has threatened US access to rare earth minerals?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Joining us as EPA Administrator, Lee Zeld and welcome, mister administrator.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Thank you for being well. The spending is easy, cutting
- 0:31Speaker 1: is hard. Tell us what resistance you are running into
- 0:34Speaker 1: in your efforts to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse at
- 0:38Speaker 1: the EPA.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Congressional Democrats in the so called Inflation Reduction Act ended
- 0:46Speaker 2: up appropriating tens of billions of dollars through EPA, so
- 0:50Speaker 2: much money that the Biden EPA didn't even know how
- 0:53Speaker 2: to spend it, and through self dealing and conflicts of interest,
- 0:57Speaker 2: unqualified recipients reduced agency site They were giving money to
- 1:02Speaker 2: these activists NGOs in many cases passed through entities that
- 1:07Speaker 2: were being run by a former Biden Obama officials, former
- 1:12Speaker 2: Democratic donors, and in some cases as you reference what
- 1:16Speaker 2: was called a Solar for All program, a seven billion
- 1:19Speaker 2: dollar program that some are now suing on. We were
- 1:23Speaker 2: finding that the money was going through pass throughs, through
- 1:27Speaker 2: other pass throughs, through pastors, through a fourth pass through,
- 1:31Speaker 2: where every pass through was getting its own cut of
- 1:33Speaker 2: at least fifteen percent. So why would congressional Democrats be
- 1:38Speaker 2: so upset about US canceling all of these grants, Well,
- 1:42Speaker 2: their friends were getting paid tremendous amount of money, where
- 1:46Speaker 2: we as conservatives believe strongly that you could protect the
- 1:49Speaker 2: environment and grow the economy with a zero tolerance policy
- 1:53Speaker 2: for any waste and abuse. We believe that if you
- 1:56Speaker 2: appropriate a dollar towards dealing with an environmental issue, the
- 2:00Speaker 2: dollars should go directly towards remediating the environmental issue, not
- 2:05Speaker 2: to some activist environmental NGO.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Friends and donors. That's what I hear you saying. It
- 2:12Speaker 1: is going to friends and donors of Joe Biden and
- 2:15Speaker 1: Barack Obama. Let me ask you something that's dissimilar but
- 2:19Speaker 1: perhaps related. When you and I were in the House together,
- 2:22Speaker 1: these groups would sue the Obama administration and then they
- 2:27Speaker 1: would settle the lawsuits, which bypasses Congress. Congress couldn't do
- 2:31Speaker 1: anything about it because the administration had settled a lawsuit
- 2:35Speaker 1: on friendly terms with these outside advocacy groups. I'm assuming
- 2:41Speaker 1: the Leez Elder I know is doing everything he can
- 2:44Speaker 1: to put an end to that sue and subtle process.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Right, We're following the law, and when we want to
- 2:52Speaker 2: change a regulation, we aren't just imposing our will in
- 2:56Speaker 2: saying that this is the change and it's now final.
- 3:00Speaker 2: We put out a draft proposal, we go through the
- 3:03Speaker 2: interagency process, We put the proposal out for public comment,
- 3:07Speaker 2: we receive public comments, we read them, we'll respond, and
- 3:10Speaker 2: we'll reach a final decision. And then you understand well
- 3:14Speaker 2: that as administrator of VPA, everything that I decide, whether
- 3:17Speaker 2: I say yes or no, someone's going to assue me.
- 3:20Speaker 2: We're going to be prepared to defend these decisions that
- 3:23Speaker 2: we reach. What we are ultimately going to end up
- 3:26Speaker 2: doing in one year is more deregulation than entire federal
- 3:30Speaker 2: governments have done across all agencies, across entire presidencies, and
- 3:36Speaker 2: just one of our proposals alone, if finalized, the decision
- 3:40Speaker 2: of the two thousand and nine Obama Endangerment Finding would
- 3:44Speaker 2: be the single largest act of deregulation in the history
- 3:47Speaker 2: of the United States. Again, we're choosing to protect the
- 3:51Speaker 2: environment and grow the economy. It's not a binary choice.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I knew it was a good idea to put a
- 3:57Speaker 1: former prosecutor at the EPA before I'll let you go.
- 4:01Speaker 1: China has been in the news this week cutting off
- 4:04Speaker 1: our access to rare earth minerals. Other folks are telling
- 4:08Speaker 1: me we're sitting a top large resources, but accessing those
- 4:12Speaker 1: resources is hard because of regulation, litigation. Does any of
- 4:17Speaker 1: that fall in your jurisdiction and are you working on
- 4:19Speaker 1: that issue?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Absolutely. President Trump has been very focused on this and
- 4:26Speaker 2: bringing together all the different agencies, the Cabinet members where
- 4:31Speaker 2: we have our own equities areas of jurisdiction that overlap here.
- 4:35Speaker 2: President Trump wants to unleash energy dominance. He wants to
- 4:38Speaker 2: make us stronger as it relates to national security. It's
- 4:41Speaker 2: not just about our economy, it's us our national security.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Out us argue by the way, it's better for our
- 4:46Speaker 2: environment because the way that we tap into all of
- 4:49Speaker 2: these supplies is better safer than so many other countries
- 4:52Speaker 2: elsewhere around the world. When we want to make America
- 4:55Speaker 2: the AI capital of the world. That's part of a
- 4:57Speaker 2: race as well with a nation like China, and the
- 5:00Speaker 2: President wants to make sure that America wins all of it.
- 5:04Speaker 2: He created a National Energy Dominance Council, working with the
- 5:07Speaker 2: Department of Interior, Secretary Bergham, Chris Wright, the Department of Energy,
- 5:11Speaker 2: and Howard Lutnick at the Department of Commerce and more.
- 5:15Speaker 2: All these agencies are working together with the President and
- 5:18Speaker 2: the White House to make sure that this agenda, this
- 5:20Speaker 2: Trump mandate gets over the finish line. This is a
- 5:23Speaker 2: very important goal and direct it from the President that
- 5:27Speaker 2: every single day we are working on to make great progress.
- 5:32Speaker 1: The Great Lesdelden with a very large portfolio. Thank you
