- 0:32Welcome to drive through episode number 61.
- 0:35What do we have guys?
- 0:36What do we wanna talk about this time?
- 0:38I mean, Halloween is right around the corner.
- 0:41Oh yeah.
- 0:41Are you gonna dress up as the scariest thing ever?
- 0:43A Nissan Ultima?
- 0:45I don't know if I would do that.
- 0:47If I acted my age.
- 0:48That'd be pretty scary.
- 0:49That's what my daughters keep telling me all the time.
- 0:51They keep telling you to act your age.
- 0:5285. Yes, exactly.
- 0:54It's true, true, true.
- 0:56Do they have those Spirit Halloween costume packs?
- 0:58That's for Nissan Ultima drivers?
- 1:00I think it comes with a restraining order.
- 1:02That was a thing a couple of years ago, right?
- 1:04You could dress up as Porsche Club members and then they'd
- 1:06be, they had BMW Club members.
- 1:09You could always dress up as Corvette owners too.
- 1:10You got the new balance.
- 1:11The White Sox, the Jorts.
- 1:13Halloween is right around the corner.
- 1:15Have you picked your costume?
- 1:16Are you gonna resurrect one of your previous costumes?
- 1:18Do you still have the unicorn onesie?
- 1:20I do, but I upgraded.
- 1:22Aren't you cookie that stuff?
- 1:23She's for cookie.
- 1:24Yeah.
- 1:25I'm pulling to see Tanya's Tomb Raider again.
- 1:27'cause I thought that was pretty snappy.
- 1:28You know, it's funny you bring that up because October seems to be the month
- 1:32where stuff has just broken or gone wrong.
- 1:35We have some issues on the clubhouse side of our website where we
- 1:39have to rebuild the vault because it's gotten a little too big.
- 1:42And I was going through some photos and I just happened to hit upon our
- 1:46road Atlanta trip where we dressed up for Halloween for that Chin Track day.
- 1:50It's amazing.
- 1:51You look back at some of the stuff we did pre COVID, it's really crazy.
- 1:55The antics that we got up to just almost week after week,
- 1:59not just month after month.
- 2:00It was absolutely bonkers.
- 2:02We tried to be pre COVID recently, and then the, the universe worked against us.
- 2:06I, I'm getting to that.
- 2:07You know, I, I wrote an article about it too.
- 2:10I read it.
- 2:11There's some typos.
- 2:12Of course there are.
- 2:16It's okay.
- 2:16Eric and Tanya, given the recent news that just came out that, you know, the average
- 2:20new car price has crept up to $50,000.
- 2:23Let's talk about, do you want to spend $50,000 on a brand new car or nickel
- 2:28and dimming to keep your old car alive?
- 2:30Eric, what's going on in your world?
- 2:31What would you do When it rains, it pours, right?
- 2:34So it's like.
- 2:35Brad, your car, why is it what your stuff's always super easy
- 2:38where you show up with a car that hasn't run in six years.
- 2:41I throw a fuel pump in it and it runs no problem, no issues, no
- 2:44check engine lights, no nothing.
- 2:46Wait.
- 2:47There's no check engine lights that I can tell at the moment.
- 2:49It's fantastic
- 2:53breaking news.
- 2:54Pumpkin spice lives.
- 2:56It does.
- 2:57That is, it was a miracle.
- 2:58We have video proof that it lives.
- 3:00Video proof.
- 3:01It'll be on the website.
- 3:02No, it won't.
- 3:04I'm amazed.
- 3:05It runs on that turpentine That's in the tank too.
- 3:07That tank is full, by the way, the gas tank is full.
- 3:10Yes.
- 3:10Uh, so we need to drain it nearly full, right?
- 3:13Yeah, just burn it off.
- 3:14Just run it for a while.
- 3:15It'll be fine.
- 3:16We'll do the Ferris Bueller thing and put it up on stands
- 3:18in reverse and it'll be perfect.
- 3:20Yeah, we gotta run them clock back.
- 3:22Maybe it's like a communicative disease.
- 3:24You know, you bring another Volkswagen into the equation.
- 3:27So your car gave my car COVID, I think is what it did.
- 3:30Another 14 day quarantine.
- 3:32Uh, now I'm plagued with all these issues.
- 3:34I had a radiator that started leaking.
- 3:37I had all this other stuff and then it just bad to worse throughout the entire
- 3:41weekend, just absolutely drove me nuts.
- 3:43Did you ever get it figured out where I stand at the moment?
- 3:46I got the Jeep situation figured out, which was also part of this mess.
- 3:50The Jeep and the Volkswagen are different species.
- 3:53How did they contract the same diseases?
- 3:55Avian, flu, all the birds can get it right.
- 3:58That's what it is.
- 4:00There's so many moving parts to this equation.
- 4:03The Volkswagen I knew had a radiator problem, and I thought it was one
- 4:08of the fixtures on the radiator.
- 4:10Either the sensor for the fans or the spigot at the bottom or whatever.
- 4:14Something was leaking because it's a 20-year-old radiator, whatever.
- 4:18Turns out the radiator end caps were leaking on the driver's side,
- 4:22and it literally dumped all its fluid in my driveway very slowly.
- 4:25So I ordered a new one.
- 4:26I was like, ah, it's not a big deal.
- 4:27Rip the front end of the car apart, change the radiator out, you know, da da da.
- 4:31Half a day's work.
- 4:32Okay, fine.
- 4:32So while I'm doing all that, I run out of antifreeze.
- 4:36When I go to go refill it, it's like I run into town.
- 4:38It's like, oh.
- 4:38And then I get in the Jeep and the freaking service engine lights
- 4:42come on, oil change due, blah.
- 4:44I was like, all right, well I'm headed to AutoZone anyway.
- 4:46I might as well get oil while I'm at it.
- 4:48You know, come back engine's hot, drain the oil, do the fuel filters.
- 4:51I'm working on two cars simultaneously, right?
- 4:54There were a couple other things I needed to do to the Volkswagen
- 4:56a BS sensors, which as we know as Volkswagen owners, they don't come out
- 5:00unless you have a hammer and chisel.
- 5:02So I beat all of them out.
- 5:04E even though they all didn't need to be changed, they only
- 5:06needed to do two of them.
- 5:07I figured I'll just do all four of them and they're fresh.
- 5:10'cause the, the other, the other two would've gone bad like a month
- 5:12later, thousand percent because that's just the way it works.
- 5:15Got rid of my a BS light and my brake light.
- 5:17That would come on randomly because I had two a BS sensors
- 5:20that were bad, so, okay, fine.
- 5:22Took care of that.
- 5:23'cause I did a system scan and it's like, oh, you have a bad cam sensor on cam two.
- 5:27I'm like, okay, cool.
- 5:29I'll order those too.
- 5:31They're actually super easy to change.
- 5:33You know, you can actually get to them.
- 5:34There's not a ton of stuff in the way.
- 5:36This is where things started to get slightly pear shaped.
- 5:39So I put two new cam sensors in again, figuring, well if one's gonna go,
- 5:44might as well do the other one too.
- 5:46And then the car did nothing but throw check engine lights constantly.
- 5:50Cam one was bad, cam one was bad, cam one was bad.
- 5:52I'm like, it's a brand new sensor.
- 5:54So unless I misordered them and they're not the same, I ended up putting
- 5:59the factory Bosch one back in that's literally 20 years old and it runs fine.
- 6:04And so I'm like, okay, cool.
- 6:05I drove it around, ran grape, blah, blah, blah.
- 6:07So the next day, Tanya and I, we get a call from Porsche Al,
- 6:10we go over to his house 'cause he's having a problem with his V.
- 6:13It was like VW weekend.
- 6:14Everybody's having an issue.
- 6:15Right?
- 6:16Get over to Porsche, Al's house.
- 6:18He's got this old Jetta.
- 6:19He's complaining that fifth gear disappeared.
- 6:21Well, turns out the bushings inside the car, another known fail point on all Mark.
- 6:26Four Volkswagens.
- 6:27He never changed the bushings.
- 6:29He apparently ordered them and then lost them, and he's gonna order them again.
- 6:32It's a whole kerfuffle.
- 6:33I told him, I said, there's no amount adjusting on this planet
- 6:36that I can do to this shift.
- 6:37Linkage fifth is never gonna be found.
- 6:39'cause there's literally not enough material to get the cables over there.
- 6:44Like you need to replace all that.
- 6:45Could you find parts from Home Depot?
- 6:47I could have, but it wasn't worth it.
- 6:48There's a kit from Diesel Geek in Texas for 50 bucks.
- 6:52Takes care of the problem for the rest of your life.
- 6:54Not Kerm and TDI?
- 6:55No, no, no, no.
- 6:56Diesel geek.
- 6:57Got it.
- 6:58Driving back with the Jeep, we go to go merge on the highway.
- 7:01I made it, I don't know, 25 yards.
- 7:04Down the off ramp and we heard this pop whoosh sound come from
- 7:09somewhere in the engine compartment.
- 7:11And I'm like, man, we just totally lost all boost.
- 7:15And then big red lights on the center dash and it's like
- 7:18service throttle control module.
- 7:20And I'm like, oh no.
- 7:21I went through this once before when the Jeep was newer and the,
- 7:25it was covered under warranty.
- 7:26It's like a $4,000 replacement to do this thing.
- 7:29'cause it's a module on the transmission, it connects to the throttle position
- 7:32sensor and you can do all this stuff and it, it's a nightmare.
- 7:35It was in, it was in the shop for like a week, right?
- 7:37For them to do this.
- 7:38And I'm like, I am not looking forward to this one bit.
- 7:41Luckily the Jeep has torques.
- 7:43It has a lot of torques.
- 7:45Yeah, mind you, Sunday morning people are going to church, going
- 7:49to brunch, wherever they're going.
- 7:50We've managed to keep up with traffic with no boost.
- 7:54I'm like fooling the transmission.
- 7:56I'm playing with the throttle to get it to shift and get it to downshift
- 7:59and like all this kinda stuff.
- 8:00It locks out the manual controls.
- 8:02So you can't use the flappy paddles, you can't put it in sport mode
- 8:06and God forbid you turn it off.
- 8:08So it's like, let's just get home.
- 8:09We limp all the way home and then I just park it.
- 8:12And we were supposed to go to a trunk or treat at the Carlisle Fairgrounds
- 8:17where they hold, you know, Corvettes of Carlisle and the GM Nationals and the
- 8:20Ford Nationals and all these big shows.
- 8:22And we even did a swap meet there many, many years ago.
- 8:24Again, going through all these pictures in the fall.
- 8:27Do you remember when we did the Euro show and sold off all that stuff?
- 8:30Yep.
- 8:31So same place, right?
- 8:32Pack up the fam, we're gonna go to the trunk or treat.
- 8:35I decided to take the Volkswagen because it's ready to go.
- 8:38Everything's fixed.
- 8:38You know, the doctor cleared it for service.
- 8:41I make it, I don't know, five, six miles from the house, not even.
- 8:46And we're in a line of cars going up north towards Pennsylvania and suddenly
- 8:51it just starts bucking and lurching.
- 8:53And the EPC light on the dashboard is flashing, which is the equivalent
- 8:56to the service throttle control module that was on the Jeep.
- 8:59And I'm like, it's been two hours.
- 9:02Did the cars talk to each other?
- 9:03Are they in cahoots?
- 9:04What the hell's going on here?
- 9:06Delusion.
- 9:07So we're on the side of the road.
- 9:09I pull off into this like little farm at, I don't even know what to call it.
- 9:13Like dude shows up with a tractor.
- 9:15He is like, y'all all right, you need anything?
- 9:17And I'm like, if you don't have an OBD scanner, no.
- 9:20Uh, you know I can't do anything for you.
- 9:21You wanna keep one in the car?
- 9:23I should.
- 9:23At this point I should.
- 9:25I've got like 12 different kinds too, which is the ironic part, realizing that
- 9:29it was the EPC and thinking back to last year, I had an issue where I was driving
- 9:34to meet up with Mountain Mandan and the car started doing some weird stuff on
- 9:37the highway, like bucking and lurching and whatever, but I was able to reset it
- 9:41by, you know, doing the old key trick.
- 9:43You're like 60 miles an hour, kill the ignition, pop the clutch, turn
- 9:46it back on, and just keep going.
- 9:47Right?
- 9:48And it, it cleared itself out and showed itself every now and
- 9:51again, just a weird hesitation when you're going down the highway.
- 9:54Everything I read online, it's like throttle body, throttle position sensor.
- 9:58It's all together, right?
- 9:59It's all electronic.
- 10:00It's all also, again, 20 plus years old.
- 10:02So I'm like, oh man.
- 10:03It finally kicked the bucket.
- 10:04I popped the hood.
- 10:05I get out.
- 10:06I pulled both connectors from the cam sensors just in case something
- 10:10was weird with those because they were giving me issues before.
- 10:12And I also popped the connector to the throttle body and
- 10:15we let it sit for a minute.
- 10:16Plugged everything back in.
- 10:18Bra fires up and we're like, cool.
- 10:19We're gonna get the heck outta here.
- 10:21Make it 50 yards.
- 10:23Buck, buck, buck.
- 10:25Car's running like crap.
- 10:26Pull into the air park and then my wife has to come, bring me the scanner
- 10:30and you know, kind of help bail me out and all those kind of things.
- 10:32So to make a long story short, we kept doing this every couple miles
- 10:36and then the car would fail and I was trying to get it home in limp mode.
- 10:39The Volkswagen though, it has torque two, the computer will not
- 10:43let it go above 20 mile an hour.
- 10:45It's pathetic, right?
- 10:46At least the Jeep, I mean, we could get it up to 70.
- 10:49As long as you played with the transmission and you kept it
- 10:51within the power band where it would make torque, it was fine.
- 10:54You could keep up with traffic.
- 10:55The Volkswagen was impossible.
- 10:56Finally, it just died right in front of a restaurant.
- 11:00So we pulled in.
- 11:02We found an open parking spot, and then this other VW owner comes running over.
- 11:06He's got an eos, you know, just starts helping us push the car.
- 11:09So we backed it into a spot.
- 11:10I called aaa, they towed me home.
- 11:12What did you get to eat at the restaurant while you were waiting for aaa?
- 11:15Nothing.
- 11:15Nothing.
- 11:16Well, that sounds like a bad time then.
- 11:18You should have said, went inside and sat and ate.
- 11:21What was it?
- 11:21At least a good restaurant like what was it?
- 11:23Was it Denny's?
- 11:24No, it was a diner.
- 11:25Perfect.
- 11:26You should have went in and got some pie.
- 11:27I feel like you did yourself a disservice.
- 11:29You're not wrong about that.
- 11:30If AAA had done what they normally do, which is we'll be there in 20 minutes and
- 11:36three hours later they show up instead.
- 11:38This guy, he was there, had us hooked up and delivered in less than an hour.
- 11:42Domino's isn't even that fast, right?
- 11:44It's like, boom, done.
- 11:45There was no time to get pie because we were in and out.
- 11:48There's always time for pie.
- 11:50I'm tired, I'm defeated, I'm deflated.
- 11:53Both cars are down.
- 11:54I'm just like, you gotta be kidding me.
- 11:56To make matters worse than we decided to watch the Formula
- 11:58One race, which we'll get to.
- 12:02So jump ahead to Monday.
- 12:05The Jeep's fixed with a bunch of MacGyvering, a bunch of mistakes.
- 12:10I was able to come up with a solution and where the problem came from, I was right.
- 12:15What I heard was not incorrect.
- 12:16It was a boost leak, like something in the system blew apart.
- 12:20It's not where I expected it to blow apart.
- 12:22And so, you know, the ECU says under boost, and I'm like,
- 12:25okay, it's all turbo related.
- 12:26Either I blew up the turbo or it's something in the intercooler system broke.
- 12:29Not a problem.
- 12:30What was going on is it was separating mind you.
- 12:33After almost five years of being on the car, the silicone adapter
- 12:38for my inner cooler kit kept coming off the throttle body, and so it
- 12:42was just venting to atmosphere.
- 12:43So the, the motor was literally pulling no air filter, no nothing.
- 12:47It was just pulling whatever air it could from under the hood.
- 12:49Can you reenact that motion again for our viewers?
- 12:52What was that motion?
- 12:53Yeah, yeah.
- 12:55For those that don't have that can't see.
- 12:57It's the shake weight motion.
- 13:02So anyway.
- 13:03Some MacGyvering, some trial and error, some test driving and whatnot.
- 13:07What I ended up doing was I went back to the factory part, cut
- 13:10it and made a hybrid solution.
- 13:12I basically forced their silicone to work with the metal and I made a
- 13:17piece that actually holds on, like you can put full Brad strength on it.
- 13:21It's not coming off of the throttle body now, which is nice.
- 13:24When I drove it, it feels peppier because now there's not boost
- 13:28leak at the throttle body.
- 13:30I feel like you did yourself a disservice.
- 13:32Again, not fixing it with Volkswagen parts 'cause that's what we tend to do.
- 13:36Well, I used the Volkswagen Band clamp because I needed something bigger.
- 13:39That counts.
- 13:40Okay.
- 13:41Counts.
- 13:41That counts.
- 13:41All right.
- 13:41That that works.
- 13:43You know, I'm waiting on a throttle body for the Volkswagen, but
- 13:46that'll get fixed soon enough, so that should be pretty easy.
- 13:48My only fear is that these days, the quality of the parts is what scares me.
- 13:54The 20-year-old part lasted 20 years.
- 13:57The new parts that are coming from city of industry, China, if they
- 14:02last 20 minutes, I'll be happy.
- 14:03You know, and it is sort of like Harbor Freight, you know what I mean?
- 14:06If it lasts 30 days.
- 14:07You're doing pretty good.
- 14:09Yeah, they're like single use tools.
- 14:11I have a similar problem experience, the similar Poltergeist on the beetle
- 14:15right now that I can't get it to not have a check engine light or
- 14:18not have a failed readiness state.
- 14:22And one of my codes was CAM position sensor.
- 14:25So I changed the cam position sensor.
- 14:26Still have the code, find out that maybe it's the crankshaft position sensor
- 14:31change, crankshaft position sensor.
- 14:32Still have the code, wait, put the original 20 some odd year old camshaft
- 14:38position or sensor back on, oh, I don't have a code anymore regarding.
- 14:41I got a different code now for something else, but I don't have that code anymore.
- 14:45But I bought a German part.
- 14:47Yeah, I was gonna say Eric, how come you're buying parts from China?
- 14:50Can you still get a OEM?
- 14:53Well you can still buy, so like I could have bought Bosch OEM or genuine VW Audi
- 15:00cam shop sensor for like $300, right?
- 15:03Or then you look at the made in Germany, blah, blah, blah, one for 30.
- 15:08Yeah.
- 15:09How do you know what the difference is and how do you know that that other
- 15:11company didn't make it for Bosch and they put, you know, I don't know.
- 15:15So to your point, the throttle bodies for the 24 valve VR sixes,
- 15:18they are no longer available.
- 15:20Nobody has them unless you buy them Chinese made or whatever
- 15:24it is, like finding a genuine Bosch or a genuine Volkswagen.
- 15:27One's gonna come from a third party reseller from basically a salvage yard.
- 15:32Or you know, somebody like a, like a strip search or a Ola or one of those
- 15:36companies that just takes those cars apart and they got parts on the shelf.
- 15:38You know, that kind of thing.
- 15:40New is not always the option.
- 15:41And I mean, I looked everywhere, whether it was ECS or FCP or Euro
- 15:45tuning or Rock Auto or O 34 Motorsport.
- 15:47I mean, you just go down the list of German man, the, even the
- 15:50obscure ones, Blauer, Newgen, and two Bennett, like, does anybody
- 15:54have this part from 20 years ago?
- 15:55And the answer is no.
- 15:57You just kind of get what you get and you're not gonna be upset.
- 16:00Now the question is, do I need to buy another one?
- 16:02To have it on the shelf if and when this one fails.
- 16:05Right.
- 16:05That becomes the bigger problem.
- 16:06Yes.
- 16:07Or keep an eye out for one on eBay, which is where I also started looking
- 16:11and I have bought some parts and oddly enough parts from Eastern block
- 16:16countries like Latvia and whatnot.
- 16:18It's actually been really good quality stuff.
- 16:20I've ordered things for the Volkswagens and for the Jeep from that part of
- 16:24the world, and I've had zero issues even coming from like record yards
- 16:27and stuff out there where it's like euro only parts kind of thing.
- 16:30No issues.
- 16:31Now granted, we're in a new world now with tariffs and shipping and UPS
- 16:35throwing packages away because they don't know how to charge you for the
- 16:39tariffs and all that kind of stuff.
- 16:40Unfortunately, I, I'm in a position of if I wanna drive the car, I'm
- 16:44gonna have to get what I can get.
- 16:45And irony of ironies the place, I found parts that have actually been
- 16:51rather decent, I'm gonna use that word.
- 16:53I don't wanna say they're good, but they're decent.
- 16:55So far I haven't had a failure rate on anything I've ordered from Amazon.
- 16:58Interesting.
- 16:59So I ordered my throttle body from Amazon.
- 17:01On the blue car before I sold it, I ordered an AC compressor from,
- 17:06it wasn't Amazon, it was Walmart.
- 17:07Really?
- 17:08You got the AC compressor from Walmart?
- 17:10Yep.
- 17:11I would've never thought to look there.
- 17:13Uh, I didn't.
- 17:13I did a Google search and Walmart came up and they had had it in stock and
- 17:18that was why I bought it from them.
- 17:19It didn't work, but I bought one from Walmart.
- 17:23It, it may have worked.
- 17:24I never got a chance to test it.
- 17:26Oh.
- 17:26Because I didn't, I didn't recharge the system or anything like that.
- 17:28So maybe it worked, maybe it didn't.
- 17:30Uh, well, in my world, so you all have issues with your cars.
- 17:34Let me talk about the issues I've got with my, with my truck
- 17:38please.
- 17:39I hear silence.
- 17:40What, what issues do you, oh, none.
- 17:41Ah.
- 17:44Must be nice.
- 17:45Must be nice.
- 17:46I mean, granted karma, I'm probably gonna go out and it's not gonna start, and I'm
- 17:50gonna have four flat tires and whatever.
- 17:52No, you should have bought a Toyota.
- 17:53That's, that's all I'm gonna say.
- 17:55How many miles does your truck have on it these days?
- 17:57Uh, 86,000.
- 18:00That's a baby.
- 18:01It's just a baby.
- 18:03It's just a baby, but it's eight years old.
- 18:06And the only issues I've had outside of normal maintenance
- 18:10is the first week I had it.
- 18:11There was a transmission sensor that was faulty from the factory.
- 18:14Yeah, they replaced it like immediately and then I had a battery die prematurely.
- 18:19I put a new battery in and I haven't had to do anything to it
- 18:23since regarding repairs, so I have to kind of separate the thoughts.
- 18:27Right.
- 18:27The Volkswagen is old.
- 18:29It's 23 years old this year.
- 18:30Yeah, yeah, of course.
- 18:31And stuff's gonna go bad, right?
- 18:33Yes.
- 18:33It just is.
- 18:33Especially old electronics things with servos and gears and stuff gets gummed up.
- 18:39You know, I was reading online, there's guys that will take throttle
- 18:41bodies and those electronic throttle position sensors, you can send
- 18:45'em off and have 'em rebuilt.
- 18:47There's companies that do that might be worth it.
- 18:49Yeah, exactly.
- 18:50There's companies that do that with dashboards and
- 18:52stuff from like the old days.
- 18:53That I'm not, I'm not too worried about because I kind of feel
- 18:56like I got my money's worth outta my throttle body, right?
- 18:58It is what it is.
- 18:59I am curious to open it, see what's wrong with it.
- 19:01Maybe it's shear a tooth or or something like that.
- 19:04But the Jeep, as you know, 156,000 miles now 11 years old, it's
- 19:08been knock on wood, reliable.
- 19:10I've really had no issues with it.
- 19:11So my thing is the issue I had, which suddenly reared its ugly head after
- 19:16five years of having this intercooler kit on the car, it's old silicone.
- 19:20The silicone goes bad.
- 19:21I had the same problem with the factory charge hose or whatever the hose is
- 19:26called, into the throttle body on the TDI.
- 19:29Something happens to the rubber and it just didn't matter how tight
- 19:33you squeeze the band clamp on.
- 19:34It would pop off.
- 19:36It would pop off, and it would pop off, and it ended up buying a new one.
- 19:39And you could actually see when you put them side by side,
- 19:41it had like shrank slightly.
- 19:43So like with age and time, it just, and the same thing would happen.
- 19:47You were driving down the road and it would go p and then suddenly you
- 19:50couldn't get out of your own way.
- 19:51And I, there's so many times like, let me pull over and I'm on the highway,
- 19:55pull over on the side of the road, tighten it back up, and then you'd
- 19:57go 10 minutes down the road and p and then you weren't accelerating anymore.
- 20:01So there's something with.
- 20:03The rubber and the silicone that Yeah, it ages out.
- 20:06And I'm not blaming one side or the other with the Jeep.
- 20:09If you look at how that throttle body is designed, it's dumb.
- 20:13Oh yeah.
- 20:14The way it's made is specific to the connector that they developed.
- 20:18Yeah.
- 20:18Which is like nothing else had they made it, you know, like a standard rib slip a
- 20:22hose over in a turbo clamp, you could put anything you wanted on there, but it's
- 20:26specifically designed for that piece.
- 20:29But they all do it.
- 20:30'cause even the Volkswagen was specifically designed
- 20:32with the, what do you call it?
- 20:34Not a pin, but it's got the collar, yeah.
- 20:37Bracket that slips around it.
- 20:38And even that, like there's play in it.
- 20:40So Kma sells kits or whatever, where basically they create a collar on it
- 20:45to clamp it and like force it that it, it can't wear it over time where it
- 20:49wears out their proprietary BS thing.
- 20:52Keeps it all nice and tight so you're not losing boost.
- 20:54But I don't know why they all do that.
- 20:56Like what's the reason?
- 20:57Proprietary, it's like overcomplicating something.
- 20:59Exactly.
- 21:00And in my case people are probably going Well why did you even
- 21:03change those pipes to begin with?
- 21:04Well first of all, the inner cooler kit is metal and it doesn't expand or contract,
- 21:09which is a problem with the factory one because they would swell and then the
- 21:12pipes would burst because they were thin.
- 21:14The one in particular at the top, at the throttle body, the way they
- 21:17designed it, it sits up next to the fan housing and by engine vibration you
- 21:21could, I showed Tanya a picture of it.
- 21:23It starts to wear into the pipe.
- 21:25So it's gonna end up eventually cutting it.
- 21:27Now the section that I salvaged to make my adapter piece is nowhere near that.
- 21:31It's up at the throttle body, so I only needed a couple of inches
- 21:34and I discarded the rest of it.
- 21:36Horror design or otherwise, whatever.
- 21:38I mean, it's gone this long without an issue and hopefully it goes
- 21:41another 10, 20 years without an issue.
- 21:43Which circles back to your original point, Brad.
- 21:46I still think it's cheaper to keep her.
- 21:47Now I've got a question for you, you and me to an extent, and certainly Tanya are.
- 21:54More mechanically inclined than your average auto buyer.
- 21:59Well, and that's the thing, given the repairs that you just had to do
- 22:04and not knowing about Amazon Auto, right, and ECS or Euro tuning or
- 22:10whatever, your car breaks, AAA tos you to a shop In your estimation.
- 22:15I know you don't know for certain.
- 22:17Let's start with the Volkswagen.
- 22:18How much would it have cost, labor and parts.
- 22:21To fix the Volkswagen at any reasonably priced independent shop?
- 22:25$800. $800 to tell me they couldn't find the parts for it.
- 22:30Let's start there.
- 22:31Yeah.
- 22:32There's that.
- 22:33Assuming the part was available.
- 22:35Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:36Assuming they got the part, they got it at whatever their cost is
- 22:39and they charge you 10% markup.
- 22:41If they bought an OEM part, easily 300 bucks Probably for the part, yeah.
- 22:46Three, 400.
- 22:47There are some shops that exclusively deal in OEM parts, right?
- 22:51They won buy aftermarket, so No, no, no.
- 22:53A hundred percent.
- 22:54What would you say it would cost you and then we'll, we'll turn to the Jeep.
- 22:57The Jeep, because the piping had been changed.
- 23:01If you took it to a shop.
- 23:03Like a regular shop, not like an auto fab or a machine shop or you
- 23:08know, any fabricator or whatever.
- 23:09I would've told you to put the factory parts back on it.
- 23:11Yeah, exactly.
- 23:12And then you're gonna buy them new.
- 23:14And at that point I'm like, well, I have 'em in a box, I'll
- 23:16just put 'em back on myself.
- 23:17It is not an easy job because you got, again, you gotta take the front
- 23:20end to part to get to all that stuff.
- 23:21Yeah.
- 23:21But Susie May with her, her own Jeep that.
- 23:25Takes it to the dealership for service and stuff.
- 23:27She decides to go to an independent place, you know, to get it fixed.
- 23:31We probably, for that issue that he had, you're probably talking 200
- 23:35bucks for the upper pipe and then the labor, how was it made stock?
- 23:40Because like that same elbow pipe, well, it's not an elbow on the Jeep,
- 23:43but the elbow pipe and the Volkswagen, I think was like $75 or something.
- 23:47It's really big.
- 23:48It's like two and a half feet long.
- 23:50Okay.
- 23:50So maybe one 50.
- 23:52And then even though it's five minutes to change an hour of labor, so 300.
- 23:57Three 50.
- 23:58Most shops charge what?
- 23:59A hundred?
- 23:59A hundred?
- 24:00125. Closer to one 50.
- 24:02Yeah.
- 24:02Okay.
- 24:02So, so one 50 labor.
- 24:04Let, let's be on the, the, the high side, be a little more conservative.
- 24:07So one 50 labor, you know, an hour to do it.
- 24:09And then an hour, 150, $200 in parts.
- 24:12So, okay, so three 50 like Tanya was saying, and then Tanya with your
- 24:16issue, and then the troubleshooting.
- 24:18'cause you had to do some troubleshooting too, even when you got the parts.
- 24:21Oh my God.
- 24:21With my issues and what they're probably gonna end up being.
- 24:24Well, if they were gonna buy me OEM parts, I'd have to go back and look.
- 24:27But I think it was a couple hundred dollars for a crankshaft position sensor
- 24:30and even that camshaft position sensor.
- 24:32So since the codes were confusing to me 'cause it threw different
- 24:35codes and probably there's nothing actually wrong with the CAM and
- 24:39it's actually is the crank one.
- 24:40If they did change both, you're already banging on $400 or $500 just in parts.
- 24:46Right.
- 24:46It's not hard to change.
- 24:48'cause the cam is very easy.
- 24:51You gotta charge you minimum of an an hour.
- 24:53Yeah.
- 24:53The crankshafts a little more tricky to get to easily another hour there.
- 24:57So you're knocking on, what do we add up to four or five?
- 25:00You're like 600 bucks maybe.
- 25:01And don't forget markup on parts and then all the shop fees because the
- 25:06environmental, this and the Yeah, we used the fingers worth of grease.
- 25:10The previous part disposal fee to Right.
- 25:12All the BS that is just cash in their pocket.
- 25:15I mean, I get it.
- 25:16They gotta pay the bills and they gotta keep the lights on.
- 25:18So to the original question.
- 25:20If these parts go another 20 years, that's $600 divided out.
- 25:25Over 20 cost of ownership there is still low.
- 25:28To pull that thread a little further, you've got a car that you own outright.
- 25:33It's completely paid off.
- 25:34So you're not putting seven, eight, $900 a month into a car payment.
- 25:38You're putting that into a savings account to absorb issues like this.
- 25:42Right.
- 25:43So to Eric's point, you know, as we come full circle, I'm gonna say something
- 25:47that they say about marriages and stuff, it's just a joke, but it's,
- 25:50it's cheaper to keep her, it's cheaper to keep your old car on the road.
- 25:54Yeah.
- 25:54Running always a hundred percent.
- 25:56Unless you're driving something that just like is super niche, like a, an
- 26:01old Maserati or something that just by turbo is immediately a money fit.
- 26:06Exactly.
- 26:06You just run it off a cliff.
- 26:08You put the track insurance on it.
- 26:10Then you take it to the track and you purposefully run it into the wall and
- 26:13total it so you get your money back.
- 26:15It declared value anyway, the point is it's still cheaper to keep your old car on
- 26:20the road than it is to go buy, especially if your car's only like 10 years old.
- 26:24Yeah.
- 26:24It's already got the updated safety stuff that the old, old cars don't have.
- 26:28So you're, it's still safer and cheaper.
- 26:30There's a lot of points here that you guys have made.
- 26:32Tanya's talking about amortizing, the total cost of ownership
- 26:35and all that kind of stuff.
- 26:36And I think Brad, you hit on something without saying something, which was,
- 26:40there's also hidden costs when you go buy a new car because the insurance
- 26:43on your old car is probably cheaper than the insurance on your new car.
- 26:47You know, things like that.
- 26:47And just because you buy a new car, just like if you buy a new construction house,
- 26:51for example, doesn't mean it's not gonna have its own problems and it's program.
- 26:55Right.
- 26:55Right.
- 26:56And so now on top of that, you've got your $900 car payment plus.
- 27:00The service cost and the maintenance and stuff like that.
- 27:03Let's talk about something there, because this is something we talked about in the
- 27:05last, I don't know if it was the last episode or one of the last episodes.
- 27:09The question was, in 20 years, what will my kids be driving kind of thing.
- 27:14What car am I holding onto given the maybe possible electronics gremlins We're
- 27:20seeing in cars we already own 20, 25 years old, that we could arguably say maybe
- 27:24build quality was better 25 years ago.
- 27:26Where do we think a car with 10,000 times more electronics?
- 27:31In them.
- 27:32Do we really think in 20 years, how do you fix them at that point?
- 27:35When all of the gremlins start going bad, I think my kids and
- 27:39Eric's kids are probably gonna end up driving Mark four Volkswagens.
- 27:43We just need to resurrect them all now and save them and just park
- 27:47them somewhere and then fix them.
- 27:48But I think Tanya's steering this conversation in, in a really interesting
- 27:52direction because the cars of today that I deem in a similar category to the
- 27:59cars of yesteryear, of our yesteryear.
- 28:01I'm not talking about Grand Pappy's Packard and you know, the 1957 Chevy
- 28:05Bel Air, and yeah, those things, you could fix 'em with the screwdriver and
- 28:08a dull knife, the hammer of the Clarks.
- 28:10The cars of today that my kids will be driving 20 years from now.
- 28:13'cause I did think about this after we talked about that on that last
- 28:16episode, is you have to lean Japanese because the Japanese have brought
- 28:21creature comforts into their vehicles, but they didn't overcomplicate
- 28:26them the way the Germans did.
- 28:28Right.
- 28:29I don't wanna talk about the Italians.
- 28:30I don't wanna talk about the rest of whatever.
- 28:32The Americans are still sort of experimenting, like they're trying to
- 28:35be cool and we're gonna put gadgets and gizmos and it's all kind of
- 28:38half baked at the end of the day.
- 28:40But the Germans went full space programs, star Wars, everything has
- 28:45its own processor, its own module, its own subdivided, subprocesses.
- 28:51It's like Tron inside of every car.
- 28:54Absolutely bonkers.
- 28:55And you need a degree in not being a mechanic, being a computer scientist to
- 29:00work on a Mercedes or an Audi, or even the lowliest of lowly Volkswagens these days.
- 29:05And so I think the Japanese, when you open the hood of a Mazda, or you look
- 29:10at the Koreans and you open the hood of a Hyundai, like I've said, you still
- 29:13look at it and go, Hey, there's a motor.
- 29:16You open the hood of A BMW, or you open the hood of an Audi and
- 29:19you're like, um, where's the engine?
- 29:22Like everything's covered.
- 29:23Everything's shrouded.
- 29:24Everything's shielded.
- 29:25You gotta spend half a day just to get to a coil pack, let alone to anything major.
- 29:30And that's where I'm starting to lose my loyalty.
- 29:33Unfortunately, I've been exiting this stage for quite a long time.
- 29:35I've said it before, but it's been a long, very slow and painful road
- 29:39to say goodbye to Volkswagen just because it's what you know, what you
- 29:44imprinted on, what you grew up with.
- 29:45Now, I'm still a huge fan of the old cars, but the new ones, you look at the
- 29:49price tag of a brand new GTI today, I've said it before, you guys scoffed at me.
- 29:54If you go price out the cars that we want as an enthusiast, the auto bond
- 29:59top edition, it starts at like 41.
- 30:02It's insane.
- 30:03It's insane.
- 30:04So by the time you're out tags, title insurance, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 30:07blah, blah, blah, blah, you're, you're banging on fifties door on a front
- 30:11wheel drive, no manual transmission.
- 30:14GTI called it.
- 30:15It only gets worse from there.
- 30:16So my point is, if you're thinking about the car of tomorrow for your
- 30:21kid that you can help them work on, the list is gonna be really short.
- 30:25I still think the Jeeps, even though I gotta talk about a Wrangler
- 30:29experience I had here in a little bit.
- 30:31Oh, wranglers are terrible for kids.
- 30:32They are, but from a workability perspective, they're still
- 30:36kind of dirt simple, right?
- 30:37Like any pickup truck is kind of dirt simple from a certain age.
- 30:41And again, I think the Japanese cars are on the simpler side and
- 30:44the cor, some of the Korean cars.
- 30:46But German cars, I would not recommend them for first time drivers.
- 30:50It was funny you said Italian.
- 30:51Anybody that buys their kid like a, a Maserati, even like the, the, the Ghibli
- 30:56Ghibli the giblets, anybody buys their kid one of those, or the, the Alpha Romeos.
- 31:01I was thinking the 500.
- 31:02They're not worried about the maintenance cost.
- 31:05No, not at all.
- 31:06True, true, true.
- 31:07Yeah.
- 31:07You shouldn't be driving.
- 31:08No.
- 31:08I mean I think our showcase kind of went everywhere or nowhere at the same time.
- 31:12Well, no, I mean it started with a good point with the car prices.
- 31:16Consistently going up given what's going on in your neck of the woods.
- 31:20With the government shutdown?
- 31:21Yeah.
- 31:21And the reduction in federal workforce.
- 31:24Lots of people looking for jobs.
- 31:25Lots of people.
- 31:26Penny pinching now yet still like something's gotta give.
- 31:29'cause people are losing their jobs.
- 31:30Their incomes are shrinking.
- 31:31But car prices and prices in general for everything are going up.
- 31:35But people are still buying cars.
- 31:37Why?
- 31:37I don't know.
- 31:38Look at your 2005 Honda Accord that's sitting in your driveway.
- 31:44Ask yourself, do I really need a new car or can I just put a new alternator in it
- 31:48and just drive it for another 50 years?
- 31:50'cause I guarantee you that car you'll get another 50 years out of it.
- 31:53I think that's just it too.
- 31:54Like you have to ask yourself.
- 31:56I know the bills can be shocking sometimes, especially if you're
- 31:58not doing the work yourself.
- 31:59To Tanya's point earlier, how long did you go, unless this
- 32:03is like a recurring problem.
- 32:05Did you go before that alternator quit?
- 32:07Yeah, well you went 20 years before it quit, so put another one in it.
- 32:11Cross your fingers.
- 32:11It goes another at least 10.
- 32:13Yeah, and I will say a lot of people did shy away from turning their own wrenches
- 32:18for quite a long time, but I am still amazed by the number of YouTube videos.
- 32:23Where you can get help and people will walk you through step-by-step how to
- 32:26change even the most complicated things.
- 32:28And I, myself sometimes are like, man, how do I do that again?
- 32:31And I don't wanna go to the Bentley manual because that drives me crazy.
- 32:35It's written by, I don't know who writes those.
- 32:38They're insane.
- 32:38They're not written well and the, and they're not documented.
- 32:41Well, it's like 5,000 pages of nonsense.
- 32:43And so I go to YouTube and then five minutes later I'm like,
- 32:46oh yeah, that's how you do it.
- 32:47That's right.
- 32:47Turn it this way.
- 32:48And spin on your head and tap your belly three times.
- 32:50And that's how you do the shift linkage, right?
- 32:52I mean, and to your point, here's where I gotta give major props.
- 32:56To, at least in the Volkswagen community, and I'm sure there are others in the, the
- 33:01other manufacturer communities, uh, but I gotta give major props to ECS tuning
- 33:06and FCP Euro, mainly FCP Euro because they have YouTube tutorial videos.
- 33:12Yeah.
- 33:12For many, many jobs.
- 33:14When I had to do the PCV valve and the intake, uh, manifold gasket on
- 33:19my, my R 32, there was a step-by-step video how to take it apart, how to do
- 33:25it, all the pitfalls, all the advice and everything the tools needed.
- 33:28FCP Euro put it out and it a job that I never in a million
- 33:33years would've attempted myself.
- 33:35I tried it and I was able to do it, and I did it successfully.
- 33:38It was because of that YouTube video that I was able to do so, and you
- 33:41brought up two companies that are at the forefront in the German space, right.
- 33:46They carry parts for BMWs and Audis and Porsches and Mercedes, and you name it.
- 33:51Interestingly enough, because they're at each other's throats
- 33:53from a competition perspective, both now have that lifetime warranty.
- 33:57So it's like if you buy the part and it fails, they'll send you another one.
- 34:01And if you buy the part and it wears out in five years and they
- 34:04send you another one, as long as you send the original one back.
- 34:06I don't understand how they make any money off of that or how it works.
- 34:10I mean, you could do used motor oil.
- 34:12We've done brake pads for the race cars using their lifetime
- 34:15warranty, stuff like that.
- 34:16It works.
- 34:17I'm not gonna question it.
- 34:18As long as they keep doing it, I'm happy.
- 34:20But that also factors in if you are a German car owner, a German
- 34:24car enthusiast, to do the work yourself, it gets a lot cheaper.
- 34:28When you have companies providing those types of warranties long term,
- 34:31'cause Tanya, that cam sensor, she's gonna send it back or they'll send her
- 34:35another one and she only paid for the one the first time and then that's it.
- 34:39Right?
- 34:39She can replace it as many times as she needs to.
- 34:41And that's actually pretty cool.
- 34:42You don't see that anymore.
- 34:44I'm sure there's other companies, but at least in, in the German car space, those
- 34:47two are the ones that are gonna do it.
- 34:48If you've got a Japanese car, an Italian car, or God forbid, like a
- 34:52Swedish car, which FCP Euro covers Swedish cars too, they, well, they
- 34:56check with whatever aftermarket sites you're using and see if they offer
- 35:00something like that because that could definitely help you limit your costs.
- 35:03The independent shops you go to, you know, as we're giving advice now, before you go
- 35:08in there and have them do work for you, make sure if you want to supply your own
- 35:11parts, that they allow you to do that.
- 35:13Some shops do not allow you to bring your own parts, right?
- 35:15So I think Tanya ran into that in Texas.
- 35:17The shop I use here in, in Virginia, the one shop will
- 35:19not let me bring my own parts.
- 35:21That's the one that only uses OEM parts.
- 35:23Mm-hmm.
- 35:23Uh, I did find another shop that will, if I need to go there, but.
- 35:27It's cheaper to keep your old car on the road, stop buying new cars.
- 35:30It's not doing anybody any good except for the car makers and the dealers.
- 35:34So keep your old cars on the road.
- 35:36Well, that's probably a good segue to talk about the craziness
- 35:39happening in the new car world.
- 35:40So maybe we'll switch back to our regularly scheduled
- 35:42ranting and raving, shall we?
- 35:44Sure.
- 35:44And since we tend to lean a little bit heavy in the world of Volkswagen, we'll
- 35:48just continue in pulling that thread.
- 35:51To your point, Brad, times are tough decisions were
- 35:54made, the people have spoken.
- 35:57We don't want your stinking EVs.
- 35:59So facilities that are home to cars like the Q4 E tron and the ID four
- 36:04and the ID seven are seeing reduced output and are in the brink of closure.
- 36:09Mm mm What a shame.
- 36:11I think it is a reminder that the industry giants need to adjust their strategy
- 36:16and listen to what people actually want.
- 36:18I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Toyota, we weren't sure what
- 36:22they were doing, but when Toyota does something, people should pay attention.
- 36:27Toyota said, we're sticking with hybrid.
- 36:29Hybrid is the answer, and everybody else should have been, you know, maybe we
- 36:34shouldn't follow Tesla down this path.
- 36:38I'm just gonna leave that where it is.
- 36:39Toyota's not without their own issues.
- 36:42I mean the, all the recalls and stuff on the new Tundra with the twin Turbo
- 36:46V six and everything, I mean, they make missteps, but they make good decisions
- 36:51much more often than they do the missteps.
- 36:54And they correct the missteps very quickly.
- 36:56I bet if that same truck had not had a twin turbo V six and had a V
- 37:00eight normally aspirated like has been around for a million years,
- 37:03thanks to Toyota's debut into nascar, they probably have no issues.
- 37:07There's a reason, there's all kinds of memes about the people and the
- 37:10owners of the truck with the motor that I have and how they look
- 37:14down on all other Toyota owners.
- 37:16Uh, yeah.
- 37:16Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 37:17It might not be the fastest V eight in the world, but it
- 37:19is reliable, that's for sure.
- 37:21It, it scoots.
- 37:22Um, okay.
- 37:22So yeah, they're shutting down.
- 37:24I guess.
- 37:24Are they gonna re, can they repurpose those facilities to make things that
- 37:27people might actually wanna buy?
- 37:28See, I think it's all about.
- 37:30Reducing their loss leaders.
- 37:32See, it's all about the bean counters because they gotta pay for Formula One.
- 37:36I just keep bringing this up.
- 37:38Volkswagen has to figure out how to pay for Audi to go to Formula One next year.
- 37:44So anywhere they can cut the fat, they're gonna cut it.
- 37:46So Volkswagen obviously hasn't heard the saying, how do you
- 37:50make a small fortune in racing?
- 37:51Start with a large fortune?
- 37:53They haven't heard that before because now they've got a small fortune and
- 37:56they're going racing at Dieselgate too.
- 37:58Right?
- 37:59So we talked last month about how Volkswagen pulled the plug on the
- 38:04Lambo program in Hypercar, right?
- 38:06For Weck and for imsa.
- 38:07You said yourself, Brad, you were like, I didn't even know they had a Lambo running
- 38:11in the upper classes in endurance racing.
- 38:13Fine.
- 38:15Fine.
- 38:15Well, we pulled the plug on that.
- 38:16Well, guess what?
- 38:17Surprise, but maybe not a surprise.
- 38:19'cause I said it from the beginning and people are like, no, you'll see.
- 38:24It's gonna be the greatest comeback since the 9 62 and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 38:29This is Porsche's new halo car and yada yada.
- 38:32The 9 63.
- 38:33The 9 63, the 9 63 is gonna win.
- 38:35Lama four years later, still hasn't won anything.
- 38:40Uh, yes.
- 38:40Okay.
- 38:40It got constructor championship or whatever it is in fine.
- 38:44Great.
- 38:44But it didn't win Lama.
- 38:45It didn't win anything of significance.
- 38:47So the factory, again, because I think they need to put their money
- 38:50to Formula One, is pulling the plug on the Porsche 9 63 Hypercar.
- 38:55It is done as of Petite Lama.
- 38:57That's it.
- 38:58That was its final race.
- 38:59Do you think they would've continued on with it had it been more successful?
- 39:03I think Porsche's got this three strike strategy.
- 39:06They either win three times and stop, or they lose three times and stop.
- 39:10I think that's what it is.
- 39:11But the 9 63 was kind of a loser from the beginning, right?
- 39:14I mean, you could argue, oh, well balance of powers in the
- 39:17favor, Ferrari, blah, blah, but Ferrari doesn't compete stateside.
- 39:21They compete at Lama and then they go home, or they do some other big race.
- 39:24They go back to Ello and they ignore everybody for another year.
- 39:27The 9 63 comes over here and competes against Cadillac in Acura, or Aston
- 39:32in the Valkyrie, you know, or whatever it is, and gets its butt handed to it.
- 39:35It's just been hit or miss.
- 39:37And granted, yeah, you got the power of Penske and all these other independent
- 39:40privateers and all this kinda stuff.
- 39:42It hasn't come together for this car.
- 39:44And so I said after the first year, I'll be amazed if the
- 39:489 63 makes it three years.
- 39:50And here we are at the end of the third year going into the fourth
- 39:53season and they said, no, that's it.
- 39:55It's done.
- 39:55Sad, but not sad.
- 39:57I don't care about that car.
- 40:01To round up this conversation.
- 40:03I got two Porsche tests while I was at Petite Lama this month.
- 40:06Do tell, I forgot you went to that.
- 40:08I can't wait to talk about that.
- 40:09Yeah, yeah, we'll talk about that a little bit too.
- 40:10So I got to ride in a Macan GTS, and as I sat in it and I looked around, I
- 40:18said, is it more than just a Tiguan?
- 40:20Is it, I don't wanna offend the owner because let's face it, with
- 40:24the new unified universal platform, mq, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 40:28There's a lot of shared DNA between tiguans tox and all this kind of stuff.
- 40:34It's a very nice car.
- 40:35It's a very quick car.
- 40:36I don't like the interior.
- 40:38The center console looks like something out of the Starship Enterprise.
- 40:41It has literally like 50 buttons because it has no multifunction interface.
- 40:45So things that should be soft buttons are hard buttons on either
- 40:49side of the console, like down the passenger side, up the driver's side.
- 40:52It's craziness.
- 40:53So I, I was sort of not a fan.
- 40:55There's all these design cues, the nine, you know, the clock in the center.
- 40:59Could you guys have just done your own thing and not made it all look the same?
- 41:03I feel like the little clock in the center, like the ones Infinity
- 41:06used to have, and, and the, the Volkswagen Fayton, I think had one.
- 41:10It's so bougie, right?
- 41:12It is bougie.
- 41:13Look, I've got a Rolex on my dash.
- 41:15It's not a Rolex, whatever, but it's a jox.
- 41:17It's just like, look, look at what time it is.
- 41:19Can you read that?
- 41:20Only the sophisticated eye can read what that says, Uhhuh.
- 41:24So, okay, so you drove a expensive take one.
- 41:26No, no, no.
- 41:26I got, I got the ride in the T one.
- 41:28So it was not the turbo more closely related to its cousin Volkswagen.
- 41:33This was actually the six cylinder God knew who makes the six cylinders
- 41:37probably punched out Audi six cylinder or something like that, right?
- 41:40So, I mean, it, it sounded good.
- 41:42It, it boogied.
- 41:43You know, all that kind of stuff.
- 41:44It felt very planted on the road, but I was just kind of kept
- 41:46looking at it going, I like it.
- 41:48I do like the way the Macan looks.
- 41:50I like the way it looks over the Cayenne, but I'm like,
- 41:52mm-hmm could I own one of these?
- 41:55You know?
- 41:55And that's where I kind of went.
- 41:56Uh, and if it was just me driving every day, I wouldn't want a Macon.
- 42:02Right.
- 42:03I would want something else.
- 42:04It's interesting to hear you say that.
- 42:06'cause when I was up there, you know, I was talking to Tanya and we were talking,
- 42:09I was like, every once in a while I think about getting rid of the truck and on
- 42:13the short list of things that I would potentially replace the truck with.
- 42:16It's a Macon or a Cayenne, you know, something stupid like that.
- 42:20Or even a Volvo vaccine 90 or whatever.
- 42:22But then I, I think.
- 42:24The problem with the truck is it's never, I can't say never, but it's
- 42:28more than likely never going to give me a reason to need to sell it.
- 42:32Right.
- 42:32And it's been dead reliable.
- 42:34It hopefully will continue to be dead reliable if I got rid of
- 42:37it and got something like this.
- 42:38I'm just asking for trouble.
- 42:40No, no, no.
- 42:41You're absolutely right.
- 42:42You're absolutely right.
- 42:43So I did get to test drive a Porsche while I was in Atlanta.
- 42:46Let me guess you test drove a. Boxter s Boxter,
- 42:54a 9 44 turbo.
- 42:55I think I threw up in the back of my throat a little bit to know
- 42:57how to fend the car that I drove.
- 42:59This is the pinnacle of Pinnacles.
- 43:00It wasn't a GT 3, 9 11 or anything, but it was a 2023 Cayman GT four.
- 43:06Oh, those are very nice.
- 43:08It is vetted.
- 43:09Nice.
- 43:09This is, the price tag is not very nice, but they're very nice.
- 43:13No, no, no.
- 43:15So did it live up to the hype?
- 43:17So it wasn't an rs, it was just a regular GT four.
- 43:21I didn't know they had an RS version of the Oh, the GT four Rs now.
- 43:23Right.
- 43:24You know how Porsche is, right?
- 43:25Yeah.
- 43:25They took parts off of it.
- 43:26It made it more expensive.
- 43:27Well, they put the ugliest wing you could find from JC Whitney on the rs.
- 43:31It looks horrendous.
- 43:32I don't like it at all.
- 43:33It just looks like a bolt on you would put on an E 36.
- 43:37It's just, ugh, horrible.
- 43:38Sort of like that goofy wing that's on the, the Mustang GTD, like it
- 43:43literally looked like they glued it in the middle of the witch.
- 43:45It's awful.
- 43:46Anyway, the Cayman.
- 43:48Is a car that's always been on my radar.
- 43:50You can kind of almost pick just about any year of Cayman, you
- 43:53know, starting from the very first ones to the very current ones.
- 43:56Looks aside.
- 43:57Uh, well, the.one and the dot two I, I hate that, by the way.
- 44:00And the, the whole community of, we refer to them as like software packages,
- 44:04service pack one and service back two.
- 44:06Ugh.
- 44:06It's just a Cayman like get over it.
- 44:08Right?
- 44:08This one had been massaged a little bit, it had an exhaust,
- 44:12some other stuff, whatever.
- 44:13I don't, it's cool.
- 44:14Like I liked it.
- 44:15I did, you know, but again, it's, you sit there and you ask
- 44:18yourself, am I that kind of poser?
- 44:20Would I drive one every day?
- 44:22I don't think I could do either.
- 44:24I'd love to have one.
- 44:26My problem with the Cayman is the same problem I have with the boxer is at
- 44:30the end of the day, it's not a nine 11.
- 44:32That's all the reason I need to like it more.
- 44:35Having driven nine elevens, I don't like the nine 11.
- 44:38I don't like the way it handles, I don't like the way it feels.
- 44:41I don't like that constant sense of it's gonna kill you of nervousness that it has.
- 44:46Like the Cayman super planted.
- 44:48You could throw it in a turn and it could care less.
- 44:50It's like driving anything else.
- 44:51Now I prefer mid-engine cars.
- 44:53You know, I've driven a a million of them.
- 44:55So for me it's like, okay, great, but the nine 11, ugh.
- 44:57I don't know.
- 44:58That's a whole nother culture that I'm sort of over it because I, I'd rather
- 45:02be with the air cooled guys, you know?
- 45:04But even there, I gotta be careful 'cause it's like I'm old school eighties
- 45:07where I'm like, Alala, yeah, let's go.
- 45:10Like, I don't, I'm not a purist.
- 45:12This is just me being bougie as someone who's never technically
- 45:15owned a nine 11 or, or, or a Porsche.
- 45:19Period.
- 45:19I see it from the outside and I'm like, well, oh, I gotta
- 45:22have the top of the line model.
- 45:23Oh well you gotta have the nine 11 like it, it ain't cool if it
- 45:26ain't a nine 11 kind of thing.
- 45:28And that's just me.
- 45:29I need to get over myself and like say, yes horse makes other cool cars.
- 45:32It doesn't have to be a nine 11 came in GT four.
- 45:35I didn't get to drive it on track.
- 45:36That'd be a lot of fun too.
- 45:38I mean, you could definitely tell it's very well sorted.
- 45:41It's fast, it's everything you want.
- 45:42It checks all the boxes.
- 45:44I mean, it's the only box that doesn't check is anything practical because
- 45:47it's not, it's very small inside and it's like a little jet fighter and
- 45:51you know, it's a modern nine 14 really what it is at the end of the day.
- 45:55So it's really cool.
- 45:56So let's play a little game.
- 45:58How much is a 2023 Cayman GT?
- 46:01Four.
- 46:01Rough ballpark.
- 46:02I know it's six figures.
- 46:04I know what was paid for the one I drove to protect the innocent.
- 46:07Just throw a number out, but not the exact number that that person paid.
- 46:11One 30.
- 46:12One 30, okay.
- 46:13What else would you get for one 30?
- 46:15I'd get a lot of things for one 30.
- 46:17I know what Tanya would get at least.
- 46:19I think I know what Tanya would get.
- 46:20I think she would get an A-M-G-G-T.
- 46:23Yeah, for sure.
- 46:23The she and judging by her smile, I think I'm right.
- 46:29Can I get one for one 30?
- 46:31I'm sure you could find a used one for one 30.
- 46:33Eric, you would probably get a newer R eight.
- 46:36That's my guess.
- 46:36Yeah.
- 46:37An R eight and I'd have money left over R eight versus Cayman R eight all day long.
- 46:42And I'm not even talking V 10, I'm talking V eight with the six speed.
- 46:46Right.
- 46:46Like why wouldn't I do that?
- 46:47It's, it's better looking, it's more interesting.
- 46:50It's still mid-engine.
- 46:51It handles really awesome, all that kind of stuff.
- 46:53The Porsches are nice, but I feel like I've outgrown them actually.
- 46:57Oh, well you've matured.
- 46:59If I was going to buy a Porsche and if I had 130 grand to spend, I actually
- 47:03really like the 89 speedster, the nine 11 Cabrio le with that hard clamshell
- 47:10thing in the little short windshield.
- 47:11I've always loved those.
- 47:12That's a car.
- 47:13Okay.
- 47:14If I have 130 grand to piss away, that's what I'm buying in the Porsche catalog.
- 47:18I'm not buying anything new.
- 47:19I want something vintage.
- 47:20Now I, I'm a hypocrite 'cause I just said, oh nine 11, blah, blah, blah.
- 47:24But that's always been like my nine 11.
- 47:27Right.
- 47:27That's the one I I love.
- 47:28I mean, I would take a Cabrio and not the speedster.
- 47:31It's the same.
- 47:32Same but different, but you know what I mean?
- 47:34Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:35I hear you.
- 47:36Moving on.
- 47:37We have a little bit of St News headlines today.
- 47:42Reed, the former CEO of Stellantis is saying things like, stellantis
- 47:46is gonna break up and all this.
- 47:48I'm like, whatever.
- 47:49We'll wait and see when, when that happens.
- 47:50And they just get together.
- 47:52Feels like just yesterday they merged.
- 47:54They talked about it for a while and it took them forever to
- 47:57come up with that stupid name.
- 47:58They were together for a while.
- 48:00And if you think about it, the most profitable part of Stellantis
- 48:03stateside is Jeep 'cause do they make anything else anymore?
- 48:07That electric charger is a failure.
- 48:09There's no more muscle cars.
- 48:11Chrysler makes the Pacifica sort of, maybe not because they're built in Canada
- 48:15and all that stuff is still happening.
- 48:18That isn't in the news anymore.
- 48:19So what's left?
- 48:21That's it.
- 48:21Beats me.
- 48:22Right?
- 48:22But I did find this interesting 'cause Brad, you know more
- 48:25about this stuff than I do.
- 48:27Oh, you, you're crazy.
- 48:28The hurricane inline six.
- 48:31Mm-hmm.
- 48:32Got dropped into a Viper and it makes 400 more horsepower than the V 10 did guessing
- 48:39the original V 10 blue, and that's why they needed to put a new motor in it.
- 48:42I mean, why would you do that to a Viper other than that reason?
- 48:45Why would you put a VR six in the back of a nine 11 that
- 48:50we saw at H2O that one time?
- 48:52I never understood that swap.
- 48:54I think this is just as weird.
- 48:56WI don't understand.
- 48:57Unless they, one, maybe they just couldn't source another V 10 or it
- 49:01was gonna take too long, or were these YouTubers that were just looking for
- 49:05something to do something different.
- 49:06They look like drag racers looking to go fast.
- 49:09Going to go real fast.
- 49:10Oh, so it's a roadkill build.
- 49:11So they're doing it for views.
- 49:12That's why.
- 49:13What about the Hellcat Prowler though?
- 49:15Yes.
- 49:16So Casey, now you got my attention.
- 49:17That has been one of the prowler biggest criticisms ever since it
- 49:21came out is the motor was anemic.
- 49:23Why did they do that?
- 49:24Should have been a six cylinder.
- 49:25Why not a hurricane in the prowler?
- 49:28That makes a ton of sense.
- 49:30Actually.
- 49:30As an inline six, it would've fit better in the front of
- 49:32the prowler than the B eight.
- 49:34Yeah.
- 49:34850 horsepower prowler.
- 49:36Now you're cooking with gas.
- 49:37But does it make it any less weird when it has more power?
- 49:41No.
- 49:42See, my problem with this whole situation, if we talk about the Viper, is like I'm
- 49:45all for like doing engine swaps and stuff like that, but not too iconic cars, right?
- 49:50Like the Viper has the V 10.
- 49:52It should always have the V 10.
- 49:54The nine 11 should always have Porsche six in the back.
- 49:57Like the people like Renegade Motor Sports that does the LS
- 49:59swap nine elevens and stuff.
- 50:01The boxers, yeah, I can see it like the Caymans boxers, sure, but not
- 50:04the nine 11 for whatever reason.
- 50:06In my little mind, I feel like it's just, it doesn't work.
- 50:09I wouldn't do it.
- 50:10Doesn't make sense to me.
- 50:11Does not compute well.
- 50:12All of this STIs talk is really.
- 50:14Just bluff and bluster to cover the fact that I wanna talk about the rental
- 50:18car I had at Road Atlanta, the four xe?
- 50:20Yes.
- 50:21Let's talk about the four xe.
- 50:22I've been very curious about these.
- 50:24We had a bunch of other options, so I went with William from the Ferrari
- 50:28marketplace and so I met him in Atlanta.
- 50:30We go down the aisle and they said, pick whatever you want out of this row.
- 50:33And so it's, you know, the typical fair Nissan Murano, cross Cale, no cross
- 50:39cabs, you know, Impala, garbage can.
- 50:42What ended up happening was there were two Jeeps.
- 50:45As we walked down this aisle, the one I wanted to rent was the new Grand Cherokee.
- 50:50'cause I was thinking, oh, I get a, basically a, a short term test drive
- 50:54to compare it to my Grand Cherokee.
- 50:56But he spotted the Wrangler and said, yeah, yeah, let's take the Jeep.
- 51:00And I'm like, uh, no.
- 51:03Two guys in our Jeep.
- 51:05Did you put the top down?
- 51:06No, it was a hard top.
- 51:08Oh.
- 51:08So you can take the hard top off.
- 51:10Did it have the soft center to where you could, the soft center
- 51:13where you could fold it back?
- 51:14No, it had everything hard.
- 51:16Oh, two guys in a hard Jeep.
- 51:18Got it.
- 51:19Okay.
- 51:19Good.
- 51:20Understood.
- 51:21The only saving grace that it had, it was like, Ooh, it's a hybrid.
- 51:24Problem is they didn't plug it in and charge it.
- 51:26Oh, great.
- 51:27Yeah.
- 51:27So it was basically flat.
- 51:29It's okay, fine.
- 51:31Everything you know, to be true about a wrangler is still true to this day.
- 51:36They're noisy.
- 51:37They ride rough.
- 51:39The doors don't close properly.
- 51:41They have a lot of wind noise.
- 51:42They have a lot of road noise.
- 51:43They meander around the road.
- 51:45They tram line going down the highway.
- 51:47They're a little bit sketch above 65.
- 51:50It's like a broken oxcart.
- 51:52I don't know why people drive them, and the worst part is the hybrid has
- 51:56a four cylinder turbo attached to it.
- 51:59So you got this big, heavy 5,200 pound Jeep.
- 52:02We looked up the weight of the thing with a four cylinder turbo.
- 52:04Now it'll scoot.
- 52:05What reserve electricity has, it uses like an additional buy turbo.
- 52:10One of them's electric and one of them's air.
- 52:12The gas mileage was horrendous.
- 52:1417 miles to the gallon, that's what it was getting.
- 52:16I'm sure with the hybrid working, maybe 30.
- 52:19But if it's anything like my wife Pacifica, you get 30 miles or 40
- 52:24miles out of the battery and then is depleted and you're back to
- 52:26making 17 miles to the gallon again.
- 52:28So what good is that?
- 52:29You can't put anything in it.
- 52:31You definitely can't haul any mulch with it.
- 52:33It's got a ton of ground clearance.
- 52:35I'm sure it's great off road.
- 52:36The interior is pretty spartan for what it is.
- 52:39It's not bad, but it's not luxurious.
- 52:41It's comparing a grand and a wrangler's like apples and chainsaws.
- 52:45I mean, they have nothing to do with one another.
- 52:47All in all, it was an epic fail and I couldn't wait to get rid of it.
- 52:51Not surprised by any of your points.
- 52:53No.
- 52:53And I remember when you had your orange one, it was red, it was orangey red.
- 52:57It was like pumpkin spice.
- 52:58It was maroon or like a dark, dark road.
- 53:00Hey, you're right.
- 53:00It wasn't maroon.
- 53:01That's right.
- 53:01But you had the stick shift in that.
- 53:03I had the six speed in that, and I had the five speed in my.
- 53:06Tj the Wrangler is off my list.
- 53:08I would not wish that upon my enemy.
- 53:10Yeah.
- 53:11The people that go out and buy a Wrangler as a family vehicle are absolutely insane.
- 53:15I mean, I was hoping that I would get a duck.
- 53:17I was thinking maybe in the next two days I'll get a duck so I can get
- 53:20something positive outta the experience.
- 53:21Nobody would've known it was a rental.
- 53:23There can have been like, oh, look at you, you get a duck.
- 53:24You don't have a duck on your dashboard.
- 53:26Here, here have a duck.
- 53:27You own a Jeep.
- 53:28You, you can still get a duck.
- 53:30You get a Duckie and you get a duckie.
- 53:31I was thinking parked at Road Atlanta with all those hundreds of thousands of people,
- 53:35I would've gotten at least one duck.
- 53:36I got nothing.
- 53:37The, the, the whole duck thing like skipped me, like I missed that part.
- 53:40Uh, I guess that was after my time.
- 53:42Part of the ethos.
- 53:43Now do Jeep people walk around with ducks in their pocket and then just
- 53:47randomly placing them on people's Jeeps?
- 53:49I wonder that.
- 53:50What do the Bronco people give each other?
- 54:00They give them each other oranges.
- 54:02Oh, nice.
- 54:03Very nice.
- 54:04Very nice.
- 54:06All right, well speaking of infinite new car wisdom, just the other day my inbox
- 54:11was exploding with emails from all over, from LinkedIn, from here, from everywhere.
- 54:16I'm gonna summarize it.
- 54:17The headline reads, GM takes 1.6 billion with the B billion dollar hit on EVs.
- 54:24And I said to myself, is anybody surprised?
- 54:27Reminds me of that drive-through.
- 54:28We did a while back, Brad.
- 54:30Remember we showcased General Motors if you were like yesterday's
- 54:34technology tomorrow, there it is.
- 54:36There it is.
- 54:38The ongoing joke in that episode was what moves faster?
- 54:43GM or anything else?
- 54:45Very slow moving object.
- 54:47Well, and it's hilarious because we reported for months and months and
- 54:50months now companies are getting out.
- 54:52Trying to ramp back up production of petrol engines or hybrids or whatever.
- 54:56And here's gm, the caboose of the train.
- 54:59Did you guys not see the warning signs?
- 55:02Did you not learn anything from your acquisition of Nicola?
- 55:05Hello?
- 55:06Do what Toyota does?
- 55:08At least look over their shoulder.
- 55:10I mean, try to get ahead of everybody.
- 55:12Once unrelated, they've got those apps that are advertised all over Instagram
- 55:16about we follow and make the stock market trades that the, the politicians make.
- 55:22Like I, I feel like GM needs something like that, but they need to follow
- 55:25Toyota and whatever things Toyota does.
- 55:27Like your, to your point, GM needs to just start doing.
- 55:30Yeah.
- 55:30They'll be a much better company.
- 55:31Well, speaking of General Motors products, this isn't a recall, but this is really
- 55:36funny, so I'll just read the headline.
- 55:38C seven Corvette ZR one averages 173 miles an hour in a Texas
- 55:43road race, but melts its butt.
- 55:46Mm-hmm.
- 55:48Oh, look at this thing.
- 55:50How's that happen?
- 55:51I mean, that's a lot of heat, right?
- 55:53No wonder they were lighting on fire.
- 55:56When the fuel spills and you're filling it, this is the previous generation.
- 56:01Oh, that's true.
- 56:01Yes.
- 56:02Right.
- 56:02The engine's in the front.
- 56:03That's right.
- 56:04That's right.
- 56:04The fuel thing's, the new ones.
- 56:06That also shows you the aerodynamics of the back of that car being flat.
- 56:10Heat gets trapped there because you would think moving at 170 miles an hour that
- 56:14that heat would escape just by sheer force of the air flowing over the car.
- 56:19But it gets trapped there and it melted the back end of it, vortex or something.
- 56:24It also doesn't help that the exhaust is all right there in the center too.
- 56:28But still, I mean, it melted the taillights too.
- 56:30It's.
- 56:30Just nuts.
- 56:31That's hot.
- 56:32Speaking of expensive repairs, true.
- 56:35What is a shop gonna charge to fix that?
- 56:36Aren't the rear these like all one piece?
- 56:38Not like there's a bumper you actually pull off, isn't
- 56:40it All part of the back end.
- 56:42Yikes.
- 56:43Wow.
- 56:43That is terrible design.
- 56:45But Jake from State Farm will take care of it, so it's all good.
- 56:47Don't worry about it.
- 56:48Exactly.
- 56:49And then our rates will go up.
- 56:50Asian and domestic news.
- 56:52I have a note here that says Toyota and Mazda teaming up
- 56:55for the next Miata and GR 86.
- 56:57Who put that in there?
- 56:58I did.
- 56:59What's that all about?
- 57:00Well, apparently, which we already knew.
- 57:02They're ditching BMW as a partner and now they're teaming up with Mazda and
- 57:06they're going to make the next great.
- 57:08Miata.
- 57:09The NE Miata, right?
- 57:10The next generation Miata.
- 57:12Do you want a Miata?
- 57:13Yeah, I want a Miata.
- 57:14What Miata do you want?
- 57:15Uh, any Miata, I guess I will tell.
- 57:18It's all pretty new reporting.
- 57:21We did some independent researching that Toyota owns 10% of Mazda and Mazda owns
- 57:26like 0.0001% of Toyota or something.
- 57:29Like there's a weird partnership there between the two.
- 57:32That just means Toyota owns 0.0001% of themself.
- 57:36Uh, yes.
- 57:37If they own Mazda self-fulfilling prophecy, you know what I mean?
- 57:40But I, I'd rather see them get together than the Mazda Ford thing
- 57:44from, you know, 15, 20 years ago.
- 57:46That made no sense to me whatsoever.
- 57:48But I'm sure there was a reason at the time.
- 57:49But as a, as an outsider, it didn't seem clear as to why those two would team up.
- 57:54We've wondered for a while, what's the next generation Miata gonna
- 57:57look like, or what's it gonna be?
- 57:59Here's the question.
- 58:00Is the Miata going to get bigger or is the GR 86 gonna get smaller?
- 58:04The GR 86 doesn't need to get any smaller, so the Miata is probably
- 58:07gonna get a little bit bigger then.
- 58:08I hope so, because I personally like the NC for the fact that
- 58:12it is a little bit bigger.
- 58:13The third generation Miata was more comfortable to drive.
- 58:16Yes, it didn't perform as well, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 58:19I get it.
- 58:20But as a driver it was more comfortable.
- 58:22Right.
- 58:23We mentioned last time the A 86, not the GR 86.
- 58:26The 80 86, you could get new crate motors from Toyota.
- 58:29Right.
- 58:30Have you guys seen the video going around Instagram of a guy that built the 80 86.
- 58:35With the electric motor and the six speed manual, it is bonkers.
- 58:39Awesome.
- 58:40That's the kind of stuff we need now.
- 58:42Apparently that build was partially done by Toyota because they supplied
- 58:48the battery pack from Lexus and like a bunch of other stuff to make it work.
- 58:51It's super clean, it's really neat.
- 58:54And then he's got this awesome setup where we joked about this before,
- 58:57but he pipes the sound of an original 80, 86 twin cam into the car.
- 59:02So it sort of fools you while you're driving it.
- 59:04And I was like, okay, I get it now because it all makes sense.
- 59:08It all works together as a system and it's actually pretty cool.
- 59:12It sounds like something to compete with that Hyundai concept that they're
- 59:16going to make, that's gonna be six figures and no one can afford, or no, no.
- 59:19You mean the N 74, whatever that thing is.
- 59:22Yeah, the N 70, whatever it was, the N 70, the Normandy, something.
- 59:25Yeah, I was told at the track, 'cause I kept saying ion when
- 59:29we were at the Hyundai booth.
- 59:30You're not pronouncing it correctly.
- 59:31Yeah, yeah.
- 59:32Why do you call?
- 59:32It's the ion.
- 59:33No.
- 59:33Well, how come Cadillac calls it the, the Celeste de derelict Dele.
- 59:39Yeah.
- 59:39Right.
- 59:39So I'm like, well then it's ion, you have to say it, right?
- 59:42Yes.
- 59:43I, I am I all Brad.
- 59:45Well, we're gonna move on to lost and found your favorite section
- 59:47of the drive through where we find out what Chuck led Duck and Gray
- 59:51Chevrolet have to offer us this month.
- 59:53And this next one just melts my brain like that Corvets rear end.
- 59:58I can't believe there's still more of these out there.
- 1:00:01You can't believe it's Solanis.
- 1:00:03Third quarter sales result included six Dodge Darts.
- 1:00:06How is this possible not only six Dodge Darts, but also Dodge
- 1:00:10Grand Caravan and a Dodge Journey?
- 1:00:12This car has been out of production for almost 10 years.
- 1:00:1610 years.
- 1:00:17This is so fascinating.
- 1:00:19Long game, baby.
- 1:00:20Yes.
- 1:00:21They're playing the long game.
- 1:00:22Exactly.
- 1:00:22They make such terrible cars now that they have to go back and drum up all
- 1:00:29these old cars that they couldn't sell before because what's old is new again.
- 1:00:34Clearly what's old is new.
- 1:00:36You didn't wanna buy those cars then.
- 1:00:37Maybe you wanna buy 'em now, but sure enough, six new 2016 Dodge
- 1:00:42Darts were sold nine years later.
- 1:00:44See, this answers your question from before.
- 1:00:46What do you buy your kid today that's gonna last them 20 years?
- 1:00:49You buy 'em a Dodge Dart, you can get 'em in a manual transmission.
- 1:00:52You get brand new today at your local Dodge dealer because
- 1:00:55they're still out there.
- 1:00:56Where do they keep finding them though?
- 1:00:58They gotta be in like a subterranean warehouse in Detroit somewhere that
- 1:01:02people just forgot that they've got 30,000 Dodge Darts sitting there.
- 1:01:06You think Dodge just kind of pulls 'em out every once in a while.
- 1:01:09Is this kind of like a trickle.
- 1:01:11If they were smart, they would package 'em as some heritage model or some
- 1:01:15special paint jobs or something, or wrap 'em, you know, Shelby
- 1:01:18additions or something, I don't know.
- 1:01:19Whatever you wanna call it.
- 1:01:20So my kids are four and two, so I've got 12 years and 14 years
- 1:01:26respectfully before I need to buy a car.
- 1:01:28At that point, I'm guessing I'll be able to go to a dealer and buy
- 1:01:32a brand new 2025 Dodge Hornet, because that's the new Dodge Dart.
- 1:01:38Right?
- 1:01:38So it is.
- 1:01:39Ah, well, this next one was brought to us by Mr.
- 1:01:44Mark Hewitt.
- 1:01:45Mark Hewitt.
- 1:01:46He's still alive.
- 1:01:47He still listens.
- 1:01:48Every month we still get comments back.
- 1:01:50Thank you, mark, for being a loyal drive-through Listener 61 episodes later.
- 1:01:54Headline reads, Nebraska on Earth's 1975 Chevy Vega from
- 1:01:59World's largest time capsule.
- 1:02:01Can we put it back, come again?
- 1:02:03Yeah.
- 1:02:03They put a Vega.
- 1:02:04Underground 50 years ago.
- 1:02:06Did you notice the plate on it?
- 1:02:08Oh, there it is.
- 1:02:0825 vanity plate.
- 1:02:09Nebraska reads 2025.
- 1:02:11Almost like they planned ahead.
- 1:02:13They were thinking it's in good condition.
- 1:02:15It's in good condition.
- 1:02:16They put it underground, brand new, but still whatever.
- 1:02:20They put it underground in.
- 1:02:22Is this the same place they get the Dodge Darts?
- 1:02:24That's good.
- 1:02:24It didn't like a bunker.
- 1:02:26It was in a bunker underground.
- 1:02:28Well, that bunker had very good climate control.
- 1:02:32Uh, it doesn't look like it from the pictures.
- 1:02:34Did you see the pictures of the bunker?
- 1:02:36It looks like literally just a hole in the ground.
- 1:02:38Yeah, it looks like where that guy built that Lamborghini in,
- 1:02:40like Slovenia or something.
- 1:02:42Wherever that was.
- 1:02:43I mean, once it's underground there's pretty much Okay.
- 1:02:46And they had it in plastic wrap.
- 1:02:48Wait, why does it look like there's rust off the hood?
- 1:02:50This is an advertisement for plastic wrap.
- 1:02:53That's what it's, they put it brand new and it already has scratches on the hood.
- 1:02:56Well, they probably had crap on top of it.
- 1:02:58Yeah, it looks like it rusted.
- 1:02:59It was underground in a bunker.
- 1:03:01Of course, it wasn't climate controlled, so it rusted sitting there.
- 1:03:05What is all this other trash they threw in this time capsule?
- 1:03:08Like, yeah, I wanna hear more about that.
- 1:03:11I'm sure it's everything they could find from 1975 newspapers and magazines
- 1:03:16and baseball cards, or a little vega all alone in the dark hole.
- 1:03:19This whole time, nobody was missing it.
- 1:03:21Okay.
- 1:03:22I'm just gonna point that out.
- 1:03:23This is its villain origin story.
- 1:03:25You know what's gonna happen to it?
- 1:03:26Somebody's gonna buy it, strip it, and turn it into a dragster.
- 1:03:30'cause that's what happened with Las Vegas.
- 1:03:32That's exactly what's gonna happen in this car.
- 1:03:34The race number will be 1975.
- 1:03:36So I think we're gonna try to start something new here.
- 1:03:38And it's Tanya's goal as a result of last month's mental gymnastics,
- 1:03:43trying to figure out Jonathan Price and the Infinity commercials and
- 1:03:47whoever this British guy is that eats the apple that we still don't.
- 1:03:49It's like the sin bad movie.
- 1:03:51We tried, oh, you should have gone through the exercise with us.
- 1:03:55We were asking like chat GPT and we asked Steven, Izzy and all these other
- 1:03:59people, do you know about the British guy eating the apple and the white
- 1:04:02suit and the commercial, blah blah.
- 1:04:03I know he was somewhere, there's some sitcom where he's gonna
- 1:04:08show up one day, some old TV show where he was in an episode.
- 1:04:12Also, one day this mystery will be solved probably on Fraser.
- 1:04:16Oh.
- 1:04:17It was he.
- 1:04:19I gotta go back and watch Frazier.
- 1:04:21I'm just giving her an excuse to watch Frazier at this point.
- 1:04:25I don't think you need to give her an excuse to watch Frazier.
- 1:04:27Yeah, I mean it's been like five minutes since I've watched the
- 1:04:30whole thing, so I gotta start again.
- 1:04:31So this little gem that Tanya found, I think we're gonna
- 1:04:34try to do this every month.
- 1:04:35It's fine.
- 1:04:36Wacky car commercials that maybe have like celebrities in them.
- 1:04:40Brad, have you seen this one yet?
- 1:04:42I think I saw it when, when Tanya posted it.
- 1:04:43Yes.
- 1:04:44I would also just like to say that this gem is in the vein of
- 1:04:48the mystery British guy biting the apple at the end commercial.
- 1:04:52And what is this commercial for?
- 1:04:53God knows Canon Pixel jet printers starring Don't Ansel this commercial.
- 1:05:00It's like a Japanese commercial only aired in Japan.
- 1:05:11Good.
- 1:05:13But the ending is what gets me, what is with the strawberry, what I don't know
- 1:05:18in his creepy face, what is happening.
- 1:05:20Yummy.
- 1:05:23That's a very Japanese thing to do, I think.
- 1:05:24Yes.
- 1:05:25Did you also notice that his eyebrows are his bushy as his mustache?
- 1:05:28Wonder what else is, I mean, I could just watch those last five seconds
- 1:05:33on repeat where he's like, Hmm.
- 1:05:34Good.
- 1:05:36Yeah, and eating the summer, it's, it's very creepy, but very satisfying
- 1:05:41at the same time, like I have a whole new respect for Nagel mantle
- 1:05:46as a result of this commercial.
- 1:05:47This is amazing stuff.
- 1:05:50Amazing stuff.
- 1:05:51Good.
- 1:05:53Unbelievable.
- 1:05:53So, Tanya, I'm looking forward to your collection.
- 1:05:57I wanna see what you come up with next.
- 1:05:59For Lost and Found car commercials.
- 1:06:02That'd be a good one.
- 1:06:03I mean, we've already done the Ridley Scott.
- 1:06:05You remember that one where it's like, and then the turbo kicks in, like
- 1:06:09there's some terrible car commercials.
- 1:06:12One of my favorite ones that I'll, I'll give you guys when I can find
- 1:06:15it, but it was the, the Pontiac Firebird, the Trans Am, the fourth
- 1:06:18gen from the early two thousands, late nineties, early two thousands.
- 1:06:21It was sitting behind a car at a traffic light.
- 1:06:23It's like pitch black or whatever.
- 1:06:25It's revving, its motor.
- 1:06:26The car won't move, so it swallows the car.
- 1:06:29It's like the Ford car.
- 1:06:30Yeah.
- 1:06:31Yeah.
- 1:06:31Like the sport car.
- 1:06:32The evil car that kills the cats.
- 1:06:35Do you guys remember the Trunk Monkey?
- 1:06:37Mm, vaguely.
- 1:06:38Go search the Trunk Monkey commercials.
- 1:06:40Those are definitely not PC anymore.
- 1:06:45Perfect.
- 1:06:46Right up my alley.
- 1:06:47Definitely not kosher.
- 1:06:49Alright.
- 1:06:50We said we weren't gonna talk about them, but they just seemed to never
- 1:06:54leave the news and that's Tesla.
- 1:06:58But now what those idiots do this time, headline reads, Tesla is urging drowsy
- 1:07:03drivers to use full self-driving.
- 1:07:06We know how this ends, folks with a lawsuit, I mean, what could go wrong?
- 1:07:12What could possibly go wrong?
- 1:07:14How many countless floor demand stories suspect pulled over
- 1:07:17sleeping while Tesla drives itself, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:07:21Everywhere around the world, right?
- 1:07:23I mean, come on.
- 1:07:23I'm sorry.
- 1:07:25I thought the rules of even the full self-driving was you still had to
- 1:07:28maintain awareness and whatnot and.
- 1:07:32It's not really full self-driving.
- 1:07:33Continue.
- 1:07:34Maybe it's like initial D. You remember when he taped his
- 1:07:37hand to the steering wheel?
- 1:07:39That's how you defeat that part so you can fall asleep and still be connected.
- 1:07:42Oh, this is like when cell phones were becoming more popular and
- 1:07:46it was decided that, you know, rightfully you should be hands free.
- 1:07:50And so people were taping the cell phone to their head.
- 1:07:57I am still baffled by the amount of people that go down the road holding the
- 1:08:01phone to their chin and I look at their car and go, it's like two years old.
- 1:08:05It's not that hard to figure out how to make the Bluetooth work.
- 1:08:08Hello?
- 1:08:09When I see that, I think one or two things.
- 1:08:12One, they're either borrowing a car from a friend or two, it's a rental,
- 1:08:16or three, they're just an idiot.
- 1:08:17That's probably the more likely one.
- 1:08:19It's number three.
- 1:08:19Yeah.
- 1:08:20Ah, well, speaking of what could go wrong, let's switch over to lowered expectations.
- 1:08:29What is this?
- 1:08:31Oh, of course.
- 1:08:31You know, there's the annual pumpkin regatta.
- 1:08:34This is racing.
- 1:08:36This is racing in pumpkins.
- 1:08:37We've covered this before.
- 1:08:38Well, they do it every year I guess, in Oregon and this year's Pumpkin
- 1:08:42regatta winner was this dude in a 936 pound pumpkin dressed like elf.
- 1:08:48And the winner of this year's trip is this guy.
- 1:08:51Look how happy he was.
- 1:08:53Look at that face.
- 1:08:54Victory.
- 1:08:55Winning winner.
- 1:08:57I'm gonna quote Mark Shank from like the last, what should I buy?
- 1:09:00This is so Oregon and I love it.
- 1:09:04And second Brad, speaking of commercials, does this remind you of those cuckoo bird
- 1:09:08German dudes, cuckoo bird, German dudes?
- 1:09:12Remember those guys?
- 1:09:13That's not a commercial though.
- 1:09:15That was a live performance.
- 1:09:19Yes, that's exactly.
- 1:09:20Oh my God.
- 1:09:21Now I gotta watch that again.
- 1:09:22Why did you do that to me?
- 1:09:24It's like carbon income sale away.
- 1:09:25Now I gotta go watch it.
- 1:09:27So funny.
- 1:09:28When are we going to commission a pumpkin?
- 1:09:31For this.
- 1:09:32How do you grow a 900 plus pound pumpkin?
- 1:09:35You mean how do you row a boat?
- 1:09:37No, I said, how do you grow?
- 1:09:39Oh, how do you get, how do you obtain a 900 pound pumpkin to begin with?
- 1:09:43A lot of miracle grow.
- 1:09:44I think this guy's been competing in the regattas since 2013 with
- 1:09:48the same pumpkin, the same pumpkin.
- 1:09:52It's just gotten bigger over time.
- 1:09:55It started out as like a 300 pound pumpkin, you know, like genetics, right?
- 1:09:59If you take the seeds from your first big pumpkin and replant them, does that
- 1:10:03mean you will get big pumpkins again?
- 1:10:05I don't know.
- 1:10:06Oh my God.
- 1:10:07He bio-engineered a 900 pound pumpkin.
- 1:10:09I mean, that's the only way, right?
- 1:10:11It's a clone of the smaller of the other pumpkins.
- 1:10:13What, what?
- 1:10:14What is this Florida man doing in lowered expectations?
- 1:10:17What's this all about?
- 1:10:18The moral of this story is the next time you're pulled over because you're
- 1:10:21speeding, and this guy was doing 73 in 55, he is response to the police
- 1:10:28officers, was his driving at DSP was a FU.
- 1:10:33To the other drivers that were going slow.
- 1:10:39Wow.
- 1:10:40Wow.
- 1:10:41I don't think that went well.
- 1:10:42His mugshot, my goodness.
- 1:10:44Looks like he was on something.
- 1:10:47Also, I didn't know a Kia Soul could do 73 miles an hour.
- 1:10:51Was it being pushed by a Silverado?
- 1:10:53Like it was downhill?
- 1:10:54Oh, there it goes.
- 1:10:55Well, Florida, there are no hills, so.
- 1:10:57Mm. I don't know.
- 1:10:58That's what I'm saying.
- 1:10:59Flat line speed of a Kia soul.
- 1:11:01You're asking a lot.
- 1:11:01Those hamsters were Were rolling.
- 1:11:03Yeah, they were.
- 1:11:04And how fitting.
- 1:11:06We had this Florida man with a Kia Soul and the Kia Soul is no longer
- 1:11:09going to be produced, end of an era.
- 1:11:12Unlike the Dodge Dart, which you can still buy new, you know the only thing
- 1:11:16people are gonna miss about the Kia Soul.
- 1:11:18Are those hamster commercials from the Super Bowl?
- 1:11:20That is it.
- 1:11:21They'll have to come up in Tanya's research.
- 1:11:24Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 1:11:25We didn't hear if Tanya watched the F1 movie yet.
- 1:11:29I have not.
- 1:11:30WW There's your update everybody.
- 1:11:33Tanya has not watched the F1 movie.
- 1:11:34Okay, moving on Book club.
- 1:11:36Well, sticking with Formula One.
- 1:11:38I finished another one this month by our friend of the show.
- 1:11:42Was she been on twice now?
- 1:11:43Multi-time guest, Elizabeth Blackstock finally got around to
- 1:11:46reading Racing With Rich Energy.
- 1:11:48This has to be one of the most incredible Ponzi schemes of the modern era.
- 1:11:54This story literally unfolds like something out of Hollywood.
- 1:11:57It is definitely a catch me if you can scenario.
- 1:12:00It's a definite read for any Formula One fan out there, or anybody
- 1:12:05that's spanning a Ponzi schemes.
- 1:12:06Well, that too.
- 1:12:07This might be the manifesto for a lot of 'em out there.
- 1:12:10The one thing that's interesting is.
- 1:12:11There's a lot of excerpts from like Twitter posts.
- 1:12:16It's kind of strange.
- 1:12:16The first book I've ever read, hashtags.
- 1:12:20But it's part of the story, right?
- 1:12:22Is, is those hashtags and all this other kind of stuff.
- 1:12:24And so you're reading these, these little experts and these Twitter
- 1:12:27posts and there's a lot of like bullet pointed lists and this and that.
- 1:12:30I mean, it's much more journalism than it is a novel, but it's still
- 1:12:33captivating and some of the stuff that they report on just absolutely bonkers
- 1:12:38and like how it all came together.
- 1:12:40And I was left with the same question I started with, which I think we all said
- 1:12:45when we tried Rich Energy, which Brad, you still have a case of rich energy.
- 1:12:49And I took photographs of it with the book to prove that hey, you know, it's sort
- 1:12:53of like a newspaper, you know, ransom.
- 1:12:55Like this is the date, here we go.
- 1:12:57So we still have this case of rich energy after all these years.
- 1:13:00It tastes like Red Bull.
- 1:13:02It smells like Red Bull.
- 1:13:03It looks like Red Bull.
- 1:13:04It's made in Austria where Red Bull is made.
- 1:13:08How do we know it wasn't just Red Bull at the end of the day
- 1:13:11and this guy was their patsy.
- 1:13:13They were adding another team without adding another team, or they were
- 1:13:16secretly funding Gene Haas without telling everybody that they were funding Gene.
- 1:13:20You know what I mean?
- 1:13:21How do we know?
- 1:13:22Like that's the part of the story.
- 1:13:24I was still left at the end going, well, how do we know it's not Red Bull?
- 1:13:27That's an interesting tinfoil hat theory you have there, bud.
- 1:13:32I mean, what else could it be?
- 1:13:33I mean, energy drink Tastes like energy drink.
- 1:13:35Tastes like energy drink.
- 1:13:36I mean they're all made from pretty much the same formulas of gross.
- 1:13:40Yeah.
- 1:13:41Except for White Monster.
- 1:13:43Yeah, white Monster is quite good.
- 1:13:44Bigger free Monster with Yeager is Deliso.
- 1:13:46The Yeager monster is quite good.
- 1:13:48Yeah.
- 1:13:48Rich energy, I mean, I don't know.
- 1:13:50Whatever.
- 1:13:51I mean, it's a good book.
- 1:13:52I mean, don't get me wrong, kudos to Elizabeth and Alanis King.
- 1:13:55They did a great job.
- 1:13:56The book is available through the McFarland Press.
- 1:13:59It is now available also as an audio book.
- 1:14:01You can get that on Spotify and through your library through Hoopla.
- 1:14:05So you can listen to racing with Rich Energy that way
- 1:14:08if you don't wanna read it.
- 1:14:09But it's always nice to have the analog version and it makes
- 1:14:12a good stocking stuffer too.
- 1:14:13It's not a very long book.
- 1:14:14It's 200 and if you take away all the citations, it's maybe 250
- 1:14:19pages or so, maybe less, you know, support independent writers and pick
- 1:14:23up a cool book about Formula One.
- 1:14:25To be fully transparent, I bought the book, but I did not actually read it.
- 1:14:28But next time we go to a professional race, I need to
- 1:14:31make sure I take it with me.
- 1:14:32'cause we may run into Elizabeth, she goes to a ton of races
- 1:14:34so I can get it autographed.
- 1:14:36But I'll probably do the audio book now that I know that
- 1:14:37it's available via audio book.
- 1:14:39'cause that's how I like to digest your literature.
- 1:14:41Yep.
- 1:14:42It's time we switch to fan favorite.
- 1:14:45Are you faster than an interceptor?
- 1:15:01I found this one this month.
- 1:15:02I found one Florida man story and this to me took the cake.
- 1:15:06So somebody, please explain this to me.
- 1:15:09Woman sues Volvo claims hands-free tailgate caused brain injury.
- 1:15:15Her, your expressions say it all.
- 1:15:19She whacked her head when the tailgate opened.
- 1:15:22No, apparently, and this is where it becomes Florida, man.
- 1:15:25The tailgates closed on her head.
- 1:15:33But those, those kind of tailgates have like a safety feature in them, so they.
- 1:15:38This was a Volvo.
- 1:15:40This was a Volvo.
- 1:15:41Apparently she was in the trunk.
- 1:15:43I don't know if she was resting her head on the sill.
- 1:15:46Is she being kidnapped?
- 1:15:47Her dog ran under the sensor.
- 1:15:49Volvo must have the fastest closing hatch in all of the automotive industry.
- 1:15:54And then it repeatedly like, like a cartoon, like the more I read this,
- 1:15:59the more confused I was and the more I started laughing and I'm like, this
- 1:16:02has gotta be nap April Fool's joke.
- 1:16:04Because there's, there's no way, oh, the light bulb just went off.
- 1:16:09No, I'm still confused because tailgates don't close that
- 1:16:12violently or that quickly.
- 1:16:14So the first time it happens, you move your head.
- 1:16:17They usually stop whenever they feel some sort of resistance.
- 1:16:20The court filing summarizes that a malfunction in the defendant's automated
- 1:16:25tailgate system caused serious injuries when it struck the plaintiff in the head.
- 1:16:29My question is, can they replicate the incident?
- 1:16:32Yeah.
- 1:16:32On Loony Tunes.
- 1:16:34I mean, I would love to see this on the next Law and order.
- 1:16:39This baffles me like I just don't understand.
- 1:16:42Do you not hear the hatch cl Normally mine beeps.
- 1:16:45Mine's 11 years old.
- 1:16:46It goes beep, beep, beep, beep to get your attention that it's closing.
- 1:16:49It's also not that fast.
- 1:16:50If you hit it, it usually stops or goes back up.
- 1:16:53It's not like a guillotine, like, I don't understand what's going on here.
- 1:16:57I could see like not realizing it was closing and you got up and
- 1:17:01you banged your head real hard.
- 1:17:04But like if your head was laying there, head was out of the car.
- 1:17:08If you watch the YouTube video that accompanies this, they literally show
- 1:17:12you the demo of the person using the foot thing and like how fast or slow it opens.
- 1:17:18It's not that fast.
- 1:17:19So not only is Volvo apparently liable based on this court filing,
- 1:17:25they're trying to find the.
- 1:17:27Quote unquote acquaintance.
- 1:17:29'cause she's no longer a friend.
- 1:17:31The acquaintance is liable because of her dog activating.
- 1:17:34Uh, yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:35Uhhuh.
- 1:17:36Yeah.
- 1:17:36Something tells me there's gonna be a movie about this.
- 1:17:40Jennifer Henry attempted to kill her friend Megan Kur using the Volvo's door.
- 1:17:47I'm telling you, this is like, oh yeah, I hate that bitch.
- 1:17:51Tries to trigger it.
- 1:17:52This is like, oh, we're gonna, we're gonna blame Volvo.
- 1:17:54We're gonna blame Volvo, but I'm gonna get that woman outta here.
- 1:17:56I mean, there's a Volvo.
- 1:17:58They're known for safety.
- 1:18:00Yes, exactly.
- 1:18:01I don't know.
- 1:18:02I mean, it's unfortunate if she has a brain injury, but it's hard
- 1:18:05to believe anything these days.
- 1:18:07Judging by the court case.
- 1:18:08I think she had the brain injury before the incident.
- 1:18:11I was thinking that you said it.
- 1:18:13Somebody had to, I don't know that it's clickbait, but I don't
- 1:18:16know that she's maybe being.
- 1:18:18Truthful with the circumstances that actually took place.
- 1:18:22I think Brad's right attempted murder is probably closer to
- 1:18:25what was really going on here.
- 1:18:26This is a little less Jersey shore and a little bit more law and order.
- 1:18:30Boom.
- 1:18:30Boom.
- 1:18:31Exactly.
- 1:18:34Well, it's time we quickly go behind the fit wall and talk
- 1:18:37about murder sports news.
- 1:18:38So you guys asked me how petite was.
- 1:18:40Petite was awesome.
- 1:18:41It was wonderful.
- 1:18:42The weather was great.
- 1:18:43Wish I could have been there.
- 1:18:44Friday practice in qualifying.
- 1:18:46I spent a lot of time running around talking to people, networking, going to
- 1:18:50booths, you know, hi to former guests.
- 1:18:53I stopped by the A CO booth for a while.
- 1:18:55There's test driving Caymans, you know, stuff like that.
- 1:18:57Just a lot of stuff going on.
- 1:18:58Race day Saturday, it took forever to get to the track.
- 1:19:02We got there in time for the race to start the wreck that happened
- 1:19:05literally 30 seconds into the race, which caused a yellow forever.
- 1:19:09The original obligations that I had on Saturday sort of changed
- 1:19:12on me, sort of vaporized so that it freed up my whole day.
- 1:19:15And I was able to take William around the track to every corner of the track.
- 1:19:20We spectated from literally everywhere.
- 1:19:22'cause he wanted to take pictures and he wanted to see and experience and all that.
- 1:19:25And it is a long race, right?
- 1:19:26It's 10 hours and change or whatever.
- 1:19:28So petite was great at the end.
- 1:19:30The only thing I cared about was how Aston finished, which they
- 1:19:33finished an overall second, which was absolutely incredible in the Valkyrie.
- 1:19:37I mean, they pulled it off at the last minute.
- 1:19:39The heart of racing team, I mean, they just did a fantastic job.
- 1:19:41I was super stoked for that.
- 1:19:43By the way, the Valkyrie sounds amazing.
- 1:19:56The only V 12 in the field.
- 1:19:57You can hear it everywhere.
- 1:19:59Sort of like the Garage 56 car.
- 1:20:00Like you could tell it from the rest of the pack and you could hear it from far
- 1:20:03away and it's just absolutely awesome.
- 1:20:05So looking forward to more Aston Martin racing next year, but I felt
- 1:20:09like it was sort of anticlimactic except for the race at the beginning.
- 1:20:13Nothing really sort of happened of any, you know, any real
- 1:20:16note or any real significance.
- 1:20:18It was just a nice weekend.
- 1:20:19It was nice to be at the track and it was nice to be amongst the Seppa yet again.
- 1:20:23Especially the race where the LMP cars are versus VIR where, you know, they
- 1:20:26unfortunately run the smaller cars.
- 1:20:28Right.
- 1:20:28You know, petite's not the important bit of news.
- 1:20:31We need to catch up and find out about Franz Herman and how he did at the Berg.
- 1:20:37He did fantastic.
- 1:20:39Oh yeah.
- 1:20:39He has a racing team for staffing.com racing, and so his co-driver is a sim
- 1:20:45racer and verse Tappen did a ver stoppen and he was so far ahead of everybody else.
- 1:20:51The gap was ridiculous.
- 1:20:52And when his co-driver came in for his stint, that gap closed down so much that
- 1:20:58he's lucky that Max was his teammate or he wouldn't have, uh, finished in anything.
- 1:21:02So Max is gonna max and he debuts on the Nors life and dominates.
- 1:21:08'cause he's one of the best apparently.
- 1:21:10So Franz Herman we're, we're gonna watch out for more Franz Herman action.
- 1:21:14Didn't he also exit stage?
- 1:21:15Right?
- 1:21:16Like he did his stint and then he pieced out.
- 1:21:18So he left his teammate there to like sort of finish the race
- 1:21:20and he didn't care how it ended.
- 1:21:21So it looked like that.
- 1:21:23But in the end, no.
- 1:21:24He actually was, I think on the podium with him, but it definitely looked
- 1:21:27like he might, he was gonna just leave.
- 1:21:31That's awesome.
- 1:21:31Which is also Max maxing.
- 1:21:33Well, that sort of leads us into a conversation about Formula One.
- 1:21:45We have what, five, six more races to go.
- 1:21:48It seems like it's unending.
- 1:21:50I mean, we still have Mexico and we've got Las Vegas and we got this and we got that.
- 1:21:54We got so many races to watch before the end of the season.
- 1:21:56That comes to its crescendo at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, which I'm super
- 1:22:01looking forward to that race 'cause I really do enjoy that track on the Sims.
- 1:22:04So let's just talk about Coda, shall we?
- 1:22:07The US Grand Prix one of three.
- 1:22:11'cause we got Miami, we've got Texas, and we've got Las Vegas.
- 1:22:14But Coda's the most interesting of the three.
- 1:22:16I don't know about you, Tanya, but I think the sprint race was more
- 1:22:19exciting than the actual race.
- 1:22:21I mean, the sprint race was Forza turn one chaos,
- 1:22:28absolute chaos.
- 1:22:30I love the whole Zack Brown blames hulking berg, and then he retracts it,
- 1:22:35and then everybody's blaming Kinberg.
- 1:22:37But it's not Hulk Berg's fault.
- 1:22:38Is it really Land's fault or is it Oscar's fault?
- 1:22:41Nobody knew whose fault it was, but all I know there was a pile of rubble
- 1:22:45in that turn and it was exciting.
- 1:22:47Which Gold's fault.
- 1:22:48It's always strolls.
- 1:22:49No, no.
- 1:22:49Stroll had his own moment, which was absolutely hilarious.
- 1:22:53Who did he wipe out?
- 1:22:54Ocon.
- 1:22:55Yeah.
- 1:22:55Yeah.
- 1:22:55And he, he did a hit and run.
- 1:22:57He tried to drive off.
- 1:22:58His front wheel is like bouncing, barely connected and he's driving
- 1:23:01as he goes around Ocon, he waves at him like, oh, so sorry.
- 1:23:07And he tries to drive away.
- 1:23:09Like, what?
- 1:23:10Dude, I was dying.
- 1:23:11It was the funniest thing I'd seen in Formula One all year.
- 1:23:14I was like, stroll, what is going on, bro?
- 1:23:18Wow.
- 1:23:19Unreal.
- 1:23:19No, the sprint race was absolutely amazing, but it was good for stopping.
- 1:23:24Right.
- 1:23:24He took an extra eight points home, which leans into his first place win.
- 1:23:29So it's 25 points for the win.
- 1:23:31Yep.
- 1:23:31So now he's got 31 extra points towards the championship.
- 1:23:34And I, I turned to Tanya and I said, is he going to make the
- 1:23:38ultimate comeback in Formula one?
- 1:23:39'cause nobody's ever done this before.
- 1:23:41Even in the, the modern times and the old times, the Senate days Schumacher before,
- 1:23:46nobody's done over a hundred point swing to come back and win the championship,
- 1:23:51but I think he can pull it off.
- 1:23:53He can't do it alone, though.
- 1:23:55There is a chance mathematically he can do this as long as the Oscar screws
- 1:24:01up and he wins everything, including the sprint races, max wins everything.
- 1:24:06So just running some simple scenarios.
- 1:24:08If he wins the last two remaining sprint races and the last five races, Oscar can
- 1:24:14come in second every time except one time.
- 1:24:17And Max will win.
- 1:24:18But if Oscar comes in second every time in the races and the sprint
- 1:24:23races and Max comes in first, there's a three point difference.
- 1:24:26You know what I'm gonna tell you that's gonna make sure that
- 1:24:28Oscar doesn't achieve that.
- 1:24:30Okay?
- 1:24:30It's two things.
- 1:24:31Stroll.
- 1:24:32The first one is Lando, and the second one is Norris.
- 1:24:35Okay?
- 1:24:36Lando is not gonna let it happen, right?
- 1:24:39He's either gonna take him out or he is gonna call up Big Papa Papaya, Zach Brown.
- 1:24:43He is gonna say, team orders.
- 1:24:45You need to put Oscar behind me because I'm the primary driver this week.
- 1:24:48Remember, that's what's gonna happen mathematically.
- 1:24:51If Max wins the next five races and the next two Sprint races, even
- 1:24:56if Lando comes in second in all those races, he cannot beat Max.
- 1:24:59Oscar can't beat Max.
- 1:25:01Lando can't beat Max.
- 1:25:02That's what I'm saying.
- 1:25:03Burins got it in the bag because McLaren's gonna take themselves out if that happens.
- 1:25:10If they are not podium or they take each other out completely.
- 1:25:14If Max can win, every is done.
- 1:25:16He's, he is a five time champion telling you it's gonna happen.
- 1:25:20The crystal ball, it's gonna happen.
- 1:25:22It's gonna happen.
- 1:25:23We're not gonna see the stupidity that we saw earlier this year where
- 1:25:26Max is taking people out and coming in like 13th and like whatever he
- 1:25:31was doing in the middle of the year.
- 1:25:32Well, he was doing that for Christian Horner.
- 1:25:34Well, yeah.
- 1:25:34Yeah.
- 1:25:35Right.
- 1:25:35But I'm also wondering if some of that was like, to get to this point, right?
- 1:25:38Like, all right Max, you gotta throw these races away because then No, no, no.
- 1:25:43Max max.
- 1:25:45In the little that he lets you know about himself.
- 1:25:48'cause he is a very private person and although he is having his own
- 1:25:52documentary coming out, I forget on what service would be as exciting as
- 1:25:56that Scott Dixon thing we reviewed.
- 1:25:58Yes.
- 1:25:58Because he's that kind of person.
- 1:26:00But to my point, he is not the kind of person he would give
- 1:26:04a big middle finger to you.
- 1:26:06If someone came to him and said throw a race.
- 1:26:08He is never going to do that.
- 1:26:09He is always going to want to win.
- 1:26:11Just like how can he race at Nors life in the middle of his F1 season?
- 1:26:15How can he go do GT three racing and all this other stuff?
- 1:26:18Has any other driver ever gone and done another series?
- 1:26:20Usually it's like, oh my god, you can't even go fart in the corner.
- 1:26:24'cause God forbid you get injured and you can't race.
- 1:26:26Right.
- 1:26:26And yet he's out here doing whatever the f he wants because he can and he will.
- 1:26:31He doesn't care, so I, no way.
- 1:26:33I believe that he was throwing anything.
- 1:26:35His car was crap and he dealt with it the best way he could.
- 1:26:38Eric just wrote the next script for Drive to Survive that he's not gonna watch.
- 1:26:41I'm never gonna watch.
- 1:26:43I think also like Max didn't start racing in in GT three, you know, sport
- 1:26:48car racing until Christian Horner left.
- 1:26:51Am I correct in saying that it all happened last time?
- 1:26:53I don't know.
- 1:26:54I thought he was doing a ton of sim racing, but he never
- 1:26:57actually competed in a rule.
- 1:26:58I thought he did that test with the Acura like last year and some other stuff.
- 1:27:02Well, was it an actual official race?
- 1:27:04The Franz Herman is new for this year.
- 1:27:06Well, even the sim racing, he's been told not to do it, and he's basically said.
- 1:27:11F you because he'll do sim racing where he is racing all through the night, right.
- 1:27:15Especially like these endurance sim racings.
- 1:27:17And then the next day, you know, he is getting a couple hours of sleep next
- 1:27:19day getting the Formula One car to race.
- 1:27:21And basically his answer was, I just won the race.
- 1:27:23What's the problem?
- 1:27:24Yeah.
- 1:27:24And I think that is a valid answer.
- 1:27:27Touche like yeah, where's my number two?
- 1:27:30Yeah.
- 1:27:30I stayed up all night playing my sim racing, but I just came out here
- 1:27:33qualified on pole and then won the race.
- 1:27:35So because he downs like a six pack of Red Bull, I mean, come
- 1:27:38on, it's gotta be in his veins.
- 1:27:39He's racing with rich energy.
- 1:27:42Oh man.
- 1:27:43That's the secret formula right there.
- 1:27:45I didn't realize until I was going through all this stuff with the clubhouse and
- 1:27:48going through the vault and the pictures.
- 1:27:50When we went to Coda in 2018, been a minute pre COVID, max
- 1:27:55was already running at Red Bull.
- 1:27:56I mean, he's been in Formula One for quite a long time.
- 1:27:59To, to your point, Tanya, he doesn't care anymore.
- 1:28:02He was basically one of the youngest people.
- 1:28:04He was like 17 or something.
- 1:28:06He was like controversial too of him getting his license.
- 1:28:09Like at the age that he did.
- 1:28:10I'm telling you, he's gonna be up there.
- 1:28:12People are gonna be talking about him like Schumacher and Fangio and Senna.
- 1:28:15He's gonna be the next one.
- 1:28:17Crystal Ball says so.
- 1:28:18Well, since you brought up SIM racing this weekend, EA Sports gave F1
- 1:28:232025 a way for free through Steam from Friday night through Monday
- 1:28:29afternoon, and we got our hands on it.
- 1:28:32What do we think?
- 1:28:33What do we think about the Formula One simulator?
- 1:28:35It was a lot better than I was expecting it to be 'cause I still
- 1:28:38remember, I haven't played a Formula One race game since, I don't know,
- 1:28:42formula one, 2002 or something.
- 1:28:44I don't know, like 1998.
- 1:28:47The last time it was free and it was horrible.
- 1:28:49They were like unplayable.
- 1:28:51As soon as you try to accelerate, you know, spin like a top.
- 1:28:54And it's like every time you try to accelerate out of a corner, they're
- 1:28:56sideways and spinning and they were unbearable, but I was expecting something
- 1:29:00similar to this and instead it was not at all like that and it felt very smooth.
- 1:29:05And I mean you could tell it was different than like a Forza or you know,
- 1:29:09some other, if you wanna call it sim, some other racing game, if you will.
- 1:29:13But I was pleased with it, man.
- 1:29:15You played a lot newer Formula one game than I did.
- 1:29:18The last Formula One game I played was the Nigel Mantle World
- 1:29:21Championship on Super Nintendo.
- 1:29:23That's like a step above pole position.
- 1:29:26No, I'm sorry.
- 1:29:26It was the, the last formula one game I played was the Tiger handheld.
- 1:29:30Oh man, you're going way back.
- 1:29:38That was the only sound effect.
- 1:29:40Yeah, no, to your point, I tried it out too, and.
- 1:29:43I liked it.
- 1:29:44Now the question is, do I wanna spend the 80 or a hundred
- 1:29:47dollars or whatever it costs?
- 1:29:49Yeah, that's the problem, the buy-in.
- 1:29:51And the problem is here we are at the tail end of the formula one season and
- 1:29:55EA iss like, oh, we'll give it to you for free because 2026 is coming out.
- 1:29:59And unlike EAs, other products where like WRC, they just keep adding to it.
- 1:30:04All you had to do was buy it in 2023, and they've continued to just add onto
- 1:30:08it and add onto it and add onto it.
- 1:30:09Formula One is like Madden, it was like, oh, Madden 22 and 23 and 24 and 25.
- 1:30:15So they're following that model and that's what sucks.
- 1:30:18It's like, well, I'm gonna pay full price, or maybe the discounted price
- 1:30:21because of this promotional weekend.
- 1:30:23But it's like the new ones around the corner again.
- 1:30:25Do you wait for 2026 to come out?
- 1:30:27But you're gonna pay a hundred bucks or do you buy 2025 and look at Dohan, you know,
- 1:30:32and other drivers that aren't in the field anymore, you know, on the 2025 roster.
- 1:30:37I don't know.
- 1:30:37My problem with those games is like how much improvement is actually made other
- 1:30:43than the roster changes, how much do they improve the game itself, the gameplay, the
- 1:30:47graphics and everything year over year?
- 1:30:50Like you probably played Madden or NBA back in the day, so you know, a lot of the
- 1:30:54times it was like reskinning, new boxing.
- 1:30:56It never really felt any different.
- 1:30:59And every so many years they would change the mechanics or they would change the ui
- 1:31:03or technology would advance and it would force them to change and they couldn't
- 1:31:07just kind of lather, rinse, repeat.
- 1:31:08And I think the same is a Formula One.
- 1:31:10It's like, okay, well we use the ego engine and it's tuned for
- 1:31:13Formula One and blah, blah, blah.
- 1:31:15And so none of that stuff really changes because if you think
- 1:31:17about it, the way the cars are shaped don't mean a hill of beans.
- 1:31:21In the digital world because there's no airflow, so the cars run at a prescribed
- 1:31:25speed and all those kinds of things.
- 1:31:27To your point, I think there's a little bit more of that regurgitation
- 1:31:30going on on the formula one side than there would be maybe in any
- 1:31:33other game or franchise, you know?
- 1:31:35Yeah.
- 1:31:36Now, I will say, just to add that it is, and it's unrelated to Formula One, but
- 1:31:40related to what we're talking about with this Sim Aceto, Corsa, you know, they
- 1:31:44came out with Evo and Evos been sort of ah, because they released it pre-Alpha
- 1:31:49and every month you get an update and all this kind of thing behind the scenes.
- 1:31:52And unbeknownst to a lot of people, probably one of the best kept
- 1:31:56secrets in gaming right now is Aceto Corsa Rally, which has been under
- 1:32:01development for the last not one.
- 1:32:04But four years and they have their own skunkworks division specifically dedicated
- 1:32:09to it, and it is coming out mid-November.
- 1:32:11And I am so stoked.
- 1:32:14And if you haven't seen the previews for it, where it's absolutely gorgeous, they
- 1:32:18are not releasing the full game on day one, which is a little bit disappointing,
- 1:32:22but there's gonna be some cool stuff.
- 1:32:24Come day one in November.
- 1:32:25Super excited for that.
- 1:32:26And there is one more racing game on the radar and that is Project
- 1:32:31Motor Racing, which looks like it might be some of the guys from Bin
- 1:32:37slash Slightly Mad Studios, all those guys that used to do project cars.
- 1:32:41'cause you know the name project, they didn't fall too far from the oak tree.
- 1:32:45It looks really good.
- 1:32:46They've got licensing from Porsche, which means there's some money behind that.
- 1:32:49'cause you can't just willy-nilly throw the Porsche Crest and the cars around
- 1:32:52without getting into some serious trouble.
- 1:32:54Apparently they're gonna have IMSA GTO racing in that game.
- 1:32:56Exactly.
- 1:32:58And that is super exciting.
- 1:32:59So that's another one that's on my radar here for the fall winter,
- 1:33:03whenever they finally release it.
- 1:33:04November 25th, two weeks after a Seto rally.
- 1:33:07So there we go, Brad, spend your money on Formula 1 20 25 or buy
- 1:33:11two games for the same price.
- 1:33:13You know what's kind of hard to get into with the Formula One game, which
- 1:33:17I found a little bit of a struggle as I sat there, you know, playing it is.
- 1:33:21I enjoyed going to Coda.
- 1:33:23Because I know Coda from literal firsthand experience.
- 1:33:28And then you look at the rest of the roster and you're like, oh, well
- 1:33:32I don't know any of these tracks.
- 1:33:33Like other than a Yeah, spa.
- 1:33:35No spa.
- 1:33:36'cause you've played spa on other racing games.
- 1:33:38But then it's like Miami.
- 1:33:40What a trash heap.
- 1:33:41That's a terrible track.
- 1:33:42Horrible, terrible course, right?
- 1:33:45Like at least.
- 1:33:46You go to something like Forza or whatever and it's like Watkins Glen and
- 1:33:49VIR, and you have these other tracks that maybe a little bit more familiar,
- 1:33:52which makes it fun as well, right?
- 1:33:54Because there's a little bit of attachment there.
- 1:33:57I don't know, go into some of the tracks that are in the Formula One rock.
- 1:34:00It's like this track sucks.
- 1:34:02Like I don't even like watching it, let alone playing it.
- 1:34:05Fictitiously definitely got a bunch of those on my list too.
- 1:34:08So those are all in the negative column in the con column of why I
- 1:34:12don't wanna spend the $80 on, you know, the next title of Formula one.
- 1:34:15I'd rather have something with a little bit more diversity, right?
- 1:34:29Well, our Motor Sports News is brought to us in partnership with the
- 1:34:32International Motor Racing Research Center, so the sweepstakes is over.
- 1:34:36So congratulations to whoever won that nine 11 T. It has not been announced
- 1:34:41yet, but we'll be keeping track of that.
- 1:34:43But I do wanna point out that the Argo Singer Symposium on Motorsports history
- 1:34:47is coming up in the month of November.
- 1:34:48It is the Thursday, Friday, Saturday before Thanksgiving.
- 1:34:53So that's the week of the 21st, 22nd.
- 1:34:56And so if you're in the Watkins Glen area, you can come and check it out, or
- 1:35:01you can stream it live on our Twitch.
- 1:35:04We'll be carrying it directly from Watkins Glen to your screen,
- 1:35:08tv, laptop, whatever it is.
- 1:35:10So you can check out the Argo Singer Symposium for yourself for free.
- 1:35:14Well, guys, I guess that sort of wraps things up.
- 1:35:16So let's take it home with a Trackside report sponsored by the Northeast
- 1:35:20Region at the Audi Club of America.
- 1:35:22Some sad news in the HPDE world.
- 1:35:24Let's take a moment of silence here.
- 1:35:27For some very upsetting news to hear that pit race.
- 1:35:31Is closing.
- 1:35:32Ah, and there's confirmation from various sources that this is
- 1:35:36indeed true, including directly from pit race's own site.
- 1:35:41That 2025 is the last season for any racing at the facility.
- 1:35:45They are going to be permanently shutting down.
- 1:35:48I plan to include some of our highlights from Fit Race for those
- 1:35:52that have never seen a lap at Pittsburgh International Raceway.
- 1:35:55Check out the videos that we include with the show notes.
- 1:35:58I mean, one of the most fun smiles per mile lap on the East Coast.
- 1:36:04A heck of a lot of fun.
- 1:36:05And it's, I'm just bummed.
- 1:36:06I don't know what else to say.
- 1:36:08Yeah, it doesn't have the same character.
- 1:36:11As Road Atlanta or Wacked Glen, but it was miles above a lot of other tracks.
- 1:36:15And it's just a shame to see places like this close and there's nothing near it.
- 1:36:20It's in the middle of nowhere.
- 1:36:21There's no developments.
- 1:36:22There's, they claim it's gonna be turned into a data center or something like that.
- 1:36:25You know, there's a lot of speculation, but the land has been sold and it's
- 1:36:29just like, it's really, really sad.
- 1:36:30And, and I put a, a slight article together about this too.
- 1:36:33Where are events like the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix gonna go and all the,
- 1:36:37the carting tournaments and all the other stuff that was happening at pit raise.
- 1:36:40It wasn't like, it wasn't busy, but it just got sold
- 1:36:43out from underneath everybody.
- 1:36:45And that's.
- 1:36:45Sad and kind of tragic.
- 1:36:47Everybody's got a price, money talks and you know what happens to the rest of it.
- 1:36:50But just because pit race is closing doesn't mean there aren't still plenty
- 1:36:53of laughs out there for you to enjoy.
- 1:36:55Clubs like H-O-D-S-C-D-A and Chin Track Days are running events through
- 1:36:59the fall and winter months at tracks like Lyme Rock, Watkins Glen, Sebring,
- 1:37:03Daytona Coda, VIR, and many others.
- 1:37:06Check out club.gt motorsports.org for details and if you're not quite
- 1:37:11ready to hit the track, don't forget that you can find tons of upcoming
- 1:37:14local shows and events at the ultimate reference for car enthusiasts.
- 1:37:18Collector car guide.net.
- 1:37:20Be sure to jump back into our podcast catalog and check out other programs
- 1:37:23we offer like screen to speed the Ferrari Marketplace, the Motoring
- 1:37:27historian Evening with a legend.
- 1:37:30The log book, break Fix, and of course the drive-through.
- 1:37:33Tune in starting this month for our newest program, the Racers round table.
- 1:37:37That's right, Tanya, that is sponsored by the Eastern Museum of Motor
- 1:37:41Racing, and it's gonna focus on short track and dirt track racing.
- 1:37:45And so that's gonna be like World of Outlaws, sprint cars, uh, late
- 1:37:49models, all that kinda stuff.
- 1:37:50Really interesting.
- 1:37:51We released our first episode this month, which coincides with our Sunday
- 1:37:55Niagara Re-released from Watkins Glen about the history of Niagara Dragway.
- 1:37:59This actually had to do with the Golden Age of Gassers, which is
- 1:38:03another class of drag racing.
- 1:38:04So we kind of kicked it off with something a little bit outside
- 1:38:07of their wheelhouse, but it was a really interesting conversation with
- 1:38:10both amateur and pro drag racers.
- 1:38:13So check those out.
- 1:38:14The Sunday Niagara and the Racers Roundtable, golden Age of Gassers.
- 1:38:18And I do wanna mention, since we're talking about podcast episodes,
- 1:38:21stay tuned for next month where we have our holiday shopping special.
- 1:38:27Then December.
- 1:38:28Normally we would do a best of, but since we're not doing Tesla this year,
- 1:38:33as our New Year's resolution continues, we're going to do December as a Formula
- 1:38:37One recap and close out the year with whether or not Oscar's the champion
- 1:38:43or max or what the heck happened.
