- 0:11Speaker 1: Justin Colson, the parenting expert on Channel Line's Parental Guidance
- 0:15Speaker 1: and author of six books. Seventh book comes out in
- 0:18Speaker 1: a couple of weeks time. Stay tuned to the podcast
- 0:20Speaker 1: for more. Recently, we were having a conversation on the
- 0:25Speaker 1: Happy Families podcast and I just loved it. Decided to
- 0:28Speaker 1: share a bit more about this. Professor h Wallace Goddard,
- 0:31Speaker 1: or Wally as I know him, shared a conversation with
- 0:34Speaker 1: me on episode three hundred and forty four of The
- 0:37Speaker 1: Happy Family's podcast. He's a wonderful mentor, he's a great friend.
- 0:40Speaker 1: So much wisdom it's really hard to pick one highlight
- 0:42Speaker 1: from his incredible conversation. I recommend you go and listen
- 0:45Speaker 1: to the whole Thing episode three forty four. But here's
- 0:48Speaker 1: Wally talking about how being a compassionate parent matters.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Another would be to teach compassion by living compassion. And
- 0:57Speaker 2: often we want to teach compassion through a lecture, and
- 1:01Speaker 2: it doesn't ring true when we do that. And I
- 1:04Speaker 2: think of the example of a dad who was frustrated
- 1:08Speaker 2: with his little boy who was playing with legos and
- 1:10Speaker 2: didn't want to go to bed, and the dad kept saying, no,
- 1:13Speaker 2: it's almost time, you got to go. You got to
- 1:15Speaker 2: get your sleep. And I think about how the dad
- 1:19Speaker 2: will only got mad and grabbed the boy and dragged
- 1:22Speaker 2: him to his room and put him to bed angrily.
- 1:25Speaker 2: What if what if dad talk compassion by living in compassion?
- 1:31Speaker 2: What if he knelt by his son and says, show
- 1:33Speaker 2: me what's you're building, Tell me about it? How far
- 1:37Speaker 2: along is it? I mean, what's your next step? Wow?
- 1:40Speaker 2: Is this a good stopping place? Or do you need
- 1:42Speaker 2: two more minutes to finish what you're doing? And then
- 1:46Speaker 2: lets you and me go to bed, and let's tell
- 1:48Speaker 2: us each other stories as I tuck you in. I mean,
- 1:53Speaker 2: the way children learn compassion is by experiencing it, so
- 2:00Speaker 2: would be a big one in my view. And another
- 2:03Speaker 2: one is to enjoy life together. One of our daughter
- 2:08Speaker 2: ones said to me, dad, joy is a good thing,
- 2:12Speaker 2: but you've just taken it too far.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Life.
- 2:20Speaker 2: And you know, somehow we've learned to manage some of
- 2:24Speaker 2: the anxiety and fear and tiredness, and we've tried to
- 2:28Speaker 2: teach ourselves to really focus on on the joy, the goodness,
- 2:32Speaker 2: the happy, the connection, and by doing that we have
- 2:37Speaker 2: filled our lives with a level of happiness. That's that's
- 2:40Speaker 2: grand So enjoying life together with our children, you know,
- 2:43Speaker 2: taking their hand and going for a walk, or when
- 2:45Speaker 2: we go visit the grandkids, Nancy always fills a box
- 2:48Speaker 2: with games that are not any better than the games
- 2:51Speaker 2: they have, but they're new, unfamiliar to them. And she
- 2:54Speaker 2: also happens to take some bubble gum and the kids
- 2:58Speaker 2: love seeing seeing and she makes peanut butter balls with them.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Then anyway, those little things say we love life and
- 3:09Speaker 2: we love you, and it makes a connection that otherwise
- 3:13Speaker 2: doesn't grow.
- 3:14Speaker 1: That's Professor h. Wallace Gottar from episode three hundred and
- 3:17Speaker 1: forty four of The Happy Families podcast. Go and check
- 3:20Speaker 1: out the rest of the episode. Now, between fifteen and
- 3:28Speaker 1: twenty percent of teens have anxiety. Anxiety is one of
- 3:31Speaker 1: the leading causes of mental illness in our children, and
- 3:35Speaker 1: as parents, we want to know where is it coming from,
- 3:38Speaker 1: can we stop it, and how do we help our
- 3:40Speaker 1: children just feel better? Start by learning how to recognize
- 3:44Speaker 1: anxiety in your child, how to respond, and how to
- 3:48Speaker 1: give them hope. And the anxiety in your child. Webinar
- 3:51Speaker 1: can help. It's available at Happy families dot com dot au.
- 3:54Speaker 1: The Happy Families membership is available right now. It's thirteen
- 3:59Speaker 1: dollars a month for a basic membership or eighteen dollars
- 4:01Speaker 1: a month for a premium membership. With that membership you
- 4:05Speaker 1: get so much value to make your family happier. You'll
- 4:08Speaker 1: receive a monthly webinar. Recently, we've been talking about everything
- 4:12Speaker 1: from emotion coaching to carrots and sticks. We've been talking
- 4:15Speaker 1: about how to guide our children successfully, what to do
- 4:17Speaker 1: about praising our kids, why that's a problem, how to
- 4:20Speaker 1: minimize control, why competition can undermine our kids well being,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and so much more. And the rest of this year's
- 4:25Speaker 1: webinars have been penciled into the calendar and you wouldn't
- 4:28Speaker 1: believe how great the content will be. Normally it's thirty
- 4:31Speaker 1: bucks a month for a webinar. If you're a Happy
- 4:33Speaker 1: Family's member, it's only thirteen dollars or eighteen dollars. But
- 4:37Speaker 1: on top of the webinars, you also receive a monthly
- 4:40Speaker 1: Q and A with me. And if it's not a
- 4:42Speaker 1: Q and A, it's an ask the expert, where I
- 4:44Speaker 1: bring in experts who know how to answer the questions
- 4:47Speaker 1: that you have about specific topics like technology or friendships
- 4:50Speaker 1: or school issues. And the list goes on and on. Oh,
- 4:54Speaker 1: by the way, we also do this thing once a
- 4:55Speaker 1: quarter called a role play with Doctor J. Two or
- 4:58Speaker 1: three people get to spend some time while everyone else
- 5:01Speaker 1: takes notes and listens carefully as we go through role plays.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Here's what you do when your kids are having a
- 5:05Speaker 1: hard time. They tell me what their problem is, and
- 5:08Speaker 1: then I roll play it as if they're the kid
- 5:10Speaker 1: and I'm the parent, and then we swap so they
- 5:12Speaker 1: get to discover just how hard it is to do it,
- 5:15Speaker 1: so that we can help you to improve your parenting
- 5:16Speaker 1: and progress it in the right direction. Role Play with
- 5:19Speaker 1: Doctor J, A, Doctor JQ and A, and ask the expert.
- 5:22Speaker 1: That's all part of the Happy Famili's premium membership. On
- 5:26Speaker 1: top of that, if you're a premium member, you get
- 5:27Speaker 1: access to our entire webinar video library. We are talking
- 5:31Speaker 1: thousands of dollars worth of webinars all sitting there waiting
- 5:34Speaker 1: for you to consume so that you can get yourself
- 5:35Speaker 1: essentially a PhD in parenting. And the list goes on
- 5:38Speaker 1: there's more stuff than I have time to tell you about.
- 5:41Speaker 1: The value is amazing. Oh by the way, if you
- 5:42Speaker 1: get a twelve month membership, we'll give you two months free.
- 5:45Speaker 1: So you pay upfront and instead of paying twelve times
- 5:48Speaker 1: thirteen or twelve times eighteen. I can't do the mass,
- 5:50Speaker 1: but whatever it is, you just pay one hundred and
- 5:52Speaker 1: thirty or one hundred and eighty bucks. Well times are
- 5:54Speaker 1: by ten instead of by twelve, you save money. It's
- 5:56Speaker 1: all there. So that's the Happy Families membership. We don't
- 5:59Speaker 1: usually do pretty hard cells on the podcast, but a
- 6:01Speaker 1: couple of times during these school holidays, I wanted to
- 6:03Speaker 1: make sure that you're aware of it because there's so
- 6:05Speaker 1: much value and it makes such a difference in people's lives.
- 6:08Speaker 1: The Happy Families membership you can find it online at
- 6:11Speaker 1: happy families dot com dot au. The Happy Family's podcast
- 6:15Speaker 1: is bridged by Justin Ruland from Bridge Media. Craig Bruce
- 6:17Speaker 1: is our executive producer and if you want more info
- 6:20Speaker 1: about making your family happy, I check out our memberships
- 6:22Speaker 1: or just visit us at Happy Families dot com dot au.
