Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: I am tired of 3D movies.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Feels like they don't want to be more creative nowadays.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: I really do miss the 2D animation era.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Didn't think that way a few years ago, but now I do.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: 3D animation got its first impact with Pixar with the movie Toy Story back in 1997 or so.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: And don't get me wrong, Toy Story is amazing.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And if you watched the movie today and Pixar recent movie, gosh, the evolution.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Kinda scary to be honest.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: But all studios today only do 3D animation movies.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: And they kinda look the same.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Similar character design, environment.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: There is no innovation in them anymore.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Sure, they get better at animating hair, water, etc.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: for each movie.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Don't get me wrong, some 3D animation is very beautiful.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: The Water in Disney's Moana or Sony's Spider-Man animated movies.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: I cannot come up with more because none of them stand out in my eyes.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: I did mention that most character models look very similar with each other.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Just look at Disney and Pixar.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: It feels like they are too afraid to try something new.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Yes, they are pretty much the same company, but duh.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Something new did Sony do with Into the Spider-Verse.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: The comic style of animation just hit different in my eyes.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: They tried to be different, they tried to be unique, and they hit the home run.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And because of that movie, more studios started to explore new elements.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: With all these 3D movies and shows, I started to look at old Disney classic movies like The Lion King, Aladdin, among others, thinking, gosh, I miss this.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Where did 2D animation go?
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: I did hear
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: When the first 2D animation from Disney came out in 1937 called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Everything was hand-drawn on a piece of paper.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Yes, everything little frame you see is done by hand.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So yes, the work put into it was a bit more than what it is today.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Today we have all these amazing programs that can help us speed up the process.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: With each year with 2D animation become better and better too, they started to get help by computer etc.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: but it was still hand-drawn.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Today, if they make 2D animation, they have a program to their help.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: No need for paper anymore.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: If you don't want to work with that, of course.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: And because I draw myself today, I might appreciate those 2D animation more than what I did years ago.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: And all the work put into it.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Example, I just love to see Aaron Blaise do animation streams using paper.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: It just looks relaxing.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: and you learn a lot.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Yes, he used programs like TV Paint to do his animation today, but just a fresh air seeing him work with paper.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: I don't do animation myself, would love to do it sometime.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: I do own an advanced course in animation by Aaron Blaze, but should probably buy the more basic one first.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: I've done some animation in DaVinci Resolve, but that is more like a subscribe button thing that I used on my videos before buying from Motion VFX.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Animation stuff in The Visual Resolve was not easy, so I gave up pretty early, and it's not fully animation software, not in the way you animate movies with.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I have not tried any 2D animation programs like TV Paint, but that might change when the new app Procreate Dreams comes out.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Just watching their keynote made me want to do animation, even if it's just the background moving a little.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: I will still be happy.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: From one thing to another, subscribe to my newsletter The Howling where I share my art journey to become a freelance artist with ADHD, ASD and mental health problems.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Also write original stories about my original characters.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: And don't forget to join the Discord community where you can share your own art.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Back to the podcast.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: So, do we have any 2D animation today?
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Gosh, I mention animation a lot in this podcast.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: And the answer is yes.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Have you ever seen the Christmas movie on Netflix called Klaus?
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: That is 2D animation and it's super beautiful.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: I watch it every December.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: 3D Total even had an interview with the Spanish studio in a recent Character Design Quarterly magazine.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Arcane do have 2D elements in their series, you know, based off League of Legends that came out on Netflix in 2021.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: They use a lot of 2D environment backgrounds, a really beautiful style of animation.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Disney's new movie Wish might have similar elements, but we have to wait and see how it really looks when the movie releases.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Other than that, not many use 2D elements anymore, not in movies.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: For series on the other hand, yes.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Disney still do DuckTales in 2D, but the style they use today is awful in my opinion.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: It's the bad creative style that Cartoon Network used years ago.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: I don't like it.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: I want the old school animation like Timon and Pumbaa had.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: The similar style that Disney classic movie had.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Not the weird stuff.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: To be honest, I don't like that weird looking style at all, not even in illustration.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: I don't call it art, I call it garbage.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: It doesn't feel they put their heart and soul into the art.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Sorry if I offended you, but that is how I see it.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Other things that still use 2D is anime, and I'm happy they still do.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Both in movie form and series.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Maybe you think you can't evolve in 2D animation, and that is so not true.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: You can sure evolve in 2D.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: A good example could be Digimon.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: If you watched the original series back from 1999 and then the reboot from 2020, you can see the evolution in 2D animation.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: And then you have DC Comics Animation Movies and Series.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: One area DC Comics does something amazing.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: An area Marvel is far behind.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: I love watching DC Comics Animation Movies.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: The recent ones like War, Throne of Atlantis based off the New 52 is really good.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: And the newer one is good too.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Even if they changed the style a little bit.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: DC Comics even have one of my favorite series, Young Justice, a series they gave two seasons then kills it, gives another two seasons and kills it again.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Just stop, okay?
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: So you see, 2D animation is still around in small places.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: I just want it back on the big screen.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: And I know I'm not the only one thinking this.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Or at least I hope I'm not the only one.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: But I still need to ask you, what do you prefer watching more?
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: 3D or 2D animation?
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Leave a comment!
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Until next time, happy drawing!
