Transcript
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the Operation Game Night Podcast.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: We are back, and better than ever, I'm your host, Travis Smith, and joining me as always is my co-host, Clayton Gable.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Clay, how are you doing?
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: I'm doing great, Travis.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Just a riding high of the last two weeks.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, we had our friends on for our two-year anniversary.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: We did our top 10 last week, and now we're doing what?
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: We're gonna do a grab bag episode today.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: A little bit of a smattering of everything.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: We have a little bit of news to cover.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: We got uh kind of a litmus test, uh a mental game to play, I guess.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah, we're gonna uh go into our mind palaces and and dig out some games uh that represent some different types of fun.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: And uh we'll go over the fence, we'll talk about games we played.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: We're just gonna be a little here, there, everywhere.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: How do you feel about that, Clay?
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: I feel ready.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: I I love structure, but I think I can I think I can do a grab bag.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we need we need a little more chaos on this podcast because we're we're we're we're too structured sometimes.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: So we're we're gonna grab bag, we're gonna reach into our grab bag and see what uh we can pull out.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: But first, we're gonna talk about what games we've been playing, we'll hit our mission objective, and then we will go over the fence and talk about what we have been doing outside of board gaming.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Clay, what games have you been playing this week?
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: I've got a lot of games to talk about, so hopefully our grab bag section isn't that long because I'm not gonna talk about any of them for long, but I've played a few interesting games this week and I've had uh I've had a shopping experience that I think needs to be debriefed a little bit.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Um, it kind of highlights it's just a problem, right?
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I went to a game store, it's like 45 minutes away.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: I really like this game store.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I go there, you know, every couple months, and I was like, you know what?
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: I haven't been in a while.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: I saw they had gotten wingspan pocket in.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, I'm gonna go get wingspan pocket.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: That's my objective.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Driving 45 minutes for wingspan pocket.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: I get there and man, I just the shopping bug really got a hold of me.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And two things I bought that I shouldn't have.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Just if you're a fiscally responsible person, you don't make these decisions.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: But when it comes to board games, all bets are off with me.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Um, I purchased the Ready Set Bet High Roller Edition.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: I had seen it every time I've gone into that store, and I'm like, why would I buy this?
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Because I got rid of Ready Set Bet.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: I just pronounced hot streak as my betting game of choice in our top 10 last week.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: So logically, there was just no good reason to make this decision, but the box just looked so big and so beautiful.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: And I just imagine everything.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just imagined the game nights I could host rolling this thing out, and I knew I had I had some family coming over that very night for a game night, and in my head, I was like, this is gonna be worth it.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna buy this obnoxiously expensive game of a game I got rid of because I was lukewarm one, like I liked it, but yeah, I got rid of it.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Um, so anyway, that's bad decision number one is spending an exorbitant amount of money on a game that I didn't like enough to keep the first time.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Well, did you did you play it at game night?
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Well, we'll get to that.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Oh we'll get to that.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Bad decision number two was I haven't played Root probably in two years, but they had the homeland expansion there.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: So why not spend another$60 on an expansion to a game that I haven't been able to play for two years?
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, what am I doing, Travis?
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, mine's still in the shrink, but I I still bought it, I still backed it.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: We need before we get to if we can get Jared to come up early before PAX Unplugged, we need to play some root with the whole man expansion.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: Yes, that sounds incredible.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Okay, carry on.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so there's two questionable choices.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Um what else did I get?
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, I did get Wingspan Pocket, mission mission accomplished, and then I got um a little shedding game by Kramer and Keisling called Linko.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Nice, yeah.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: So that that didn't break the bank too much.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: That's like a tiny little amigo box.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: But anyways, it was a good it was a good shopping trip, but I just left them like who does that?
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Like, why would I spend that much money on on two pretty expensive things that I had no good reason to?
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: But let's fast forward to later that night, I roll out the high roller mat for Ready Set Bet.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: I get out the huge chunky horses.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: And I was like, this is how this game was meant to be played.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: I don't even know how you play this game with the base edition now that I've played it on the high roller mat.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Like for you if you can do it on that little board and have everybody trying to put their tiny little chips on those little spaces.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: But now that I've seen it in action, the high roller version of Ready Set Bet, and I was I was the house.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: I didn't even use the app.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: I was like, I want to give the the authentic experience here to everybody.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: I had my dad and stepmom, I had my sister and brother-in-law, Mary.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: They're all betting.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: I'm rolling the die, moving these horses, and they had a blast.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: I had a blast.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: It was kind of exhausting doing that for four races.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: I was like, I'm not, I don't know if I'm gonna be able to keep this up.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, no regrets there.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: I'd I'd buy it a hundred.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: They'll never after playing it once and seeing that beautiful production with those poker chips and the acrylic um like little place markers, like everything was just mats for the horse race, mats for the betting board, just huge, big, everybody can see everything.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, it's so nice.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: It's so nice.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying I'm not saying everybody should go buy this thing because it is expensive, but if you like betting games and you and you have a crowd that you could play this with uh even just a couple times a year, man, it's just an experience to have this.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Um, man.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: So glad I got it.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Glad I got it.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I remember and I just now I see why I got rid of the old one because it just wasn't what it was supposed to be.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this was always what it was supposed to be.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that production is phenomenal.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: Um I think you just need to start hosting derby parties every year, and then that's like your one excuse to pull that thing out, have it already set up by the time people come over, and then you can wear your fancy hats and do some horse racing, and then when the horse race is actually on, you can watch the race.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you can do the the prinknet, the preakness, the derby, and uh whatever the other one is, the third one.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: You can do a party for each of those and have ready set bets set up when people show up.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, I mean, uh that that I did have it set up, but I did not pre-brief everybody on you know, dressing up in their derby attire.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: That's okay.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: But yeah, for the for just a quick overview for people that may not know of Ready Set Bet, essentially it's just betting on horse races, right?
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: And and one person is the house and they are rolling dye that correspond to these horses, and they're announcing the race.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: So five o'clock somewhere moves, and then you know, six appeal moves, and and you're just rolling dice, moving horses.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: There's some bonus moves that happen.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: If you like roll the same number twice in a row, it that horse gets like a bonus move, and everybody's watching this race and real time, like having to claim these spots on the bet board.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: So the people betting are having to make decisions about oh my gosh, you know, I don't have a lot of information at the beginning of the race, but I do have a chance to get some of the good spots if I bet on seven, because seven is obviously the favorite, it's the most likely to be rolled.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: So, you know, do you bet on seven early or do you wait and kind of see what happens?
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Is 10-gallon hat really having a heck of a day?
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Um, and then there's a certain point in the race when three horses cross uh the no bets line, nobody can bet anymore.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: And then you just finish the race.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: One horse crosses the finish line, you see who got first, second, and third.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: There's some prop bets, there's an exotic bet.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: But yeah, essentially everybody's placing these bets, then you pay them out, you set up for a new race, do it three more times.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Whoever has the most money wins.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: And uh, it's people people get it, you know, they understand betting.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, people like to gamble.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: It's so much fun.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: It's funny.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: I want to do a whole betting episode because I really betting games are some of my favorite, and I was just thinking through some of the ones.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: We got Camel Up, we got Downforce, what we got hot streak, hot streak, I got Divinity Derby.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, forgot about that one.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: So I got Win Winner's Circle by Reiner Kenizia.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: That yeah, we need to do a betting episode.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: I want to do a big betting episode and just talk about some of what's the rolling right?
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Long shot the dice game.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah, there's so many good betting games, and I uh quite frankly, I love them all.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Like I'll never I'll never turn down one of those games.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna do a betting episode coming up soon.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: That sounds great.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: So that's play number one.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: I got more to talk about, Travis, but I'll see you.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Keep rolling.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: You want me to keep rolling?
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Keep rolling.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: I'm on fire.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, here we go.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Um, next, I had my every other Tuesday game night with my buddy Zach.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, and he introduced me to Mystic Vale.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, nice! Yes, I don't know if this was the original card crafting game.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: I do you know which one was John Declare's I can't remember what the first one was, but I've heard of Mystic Veil.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Yes, so Mystic Veil is like just kind of a straight-up deck builder, but with card crafting.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: So any deck build you've ever played, Dominion, whatever, you it's the same type of mechanism where you're building up your deck, eventually you're getting cards that give you points, what have you.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: But instead of adding cards to your deck, you're adding sleeves to your cards.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: So you have these um cards that hold these transparent sleeves.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: Each card can hold three sleeves.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Um, so there's a market of these little inserts that you can put into your cards.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: And so your deck never gets bigger, but it just gets better, which is fun because oftentimes in these deck building games, you have a situation where you get to the buying portion and you may not have enough money to buy something good, and you have to you have to sometimes pass because you're like, I don't want to add this crappy card to my deck, it's gonna clog it up.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: But in Mystic Veil, it's always good to buy stuff because you're not adding more cards.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: At worst, you're just like some of your cards you start the game with, like half of them have nothing in them.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you're just flipping cards over and they're just empty sleeves.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: So adding anything to them is good.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, they all have three spots they can hold.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: You're never gonna fill all three spots.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: So I really liked that there there wasn't that.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Oh man, do I do I just pass on my buying this turn because I don't want to clog up my deck.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: Like, no, just throw a sleeve in.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Throw it.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Throw it.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and it has a cool um the other piece of this that was fun was there was a push your luck element where there's these like rot symbols on your cards.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: So as you're on your turn, you're like flipping up cards one by one.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: And when you get to, I think it's three rot symbols, you have to make a decision whether you want to keep flipping.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Because if you get to four, you bust and you don't get to buy or score points or do anything that round.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: So that added a fun piece to it.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: I really like this.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: I think this would knock it out of the park with the big guy because I know I know how he liked his card crafting, and he also loves the deck builder.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Um, I got whooped.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: So I really went down a path in this game.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Like there were some cards that when you when you like revealed them every turn, they would give you points.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: So I was like, this is a no-brainer.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: I'm just gonna I'm just gonna get a couple of those.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Every time they come up, I'm gonna get a couple points.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: I thought I was rocking and rolling, but I wasn't adding the sleeves to my cards that were, you know, like really beefing up my hand.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: I watched my buddy Zach, and towards the end of the game, you know, I'm just humming along.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: I'm just scoring the same two or three points every time, every time I reveal my my hand, and it never really got much better for me because I I kind of stopped buying and just kept milking that same system.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: And then towards the last two rounds, every time somehow Zach emptied his entire hand in front of the table.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean, and it's like 24 cards almost, and he had them all out every time because he had all these cards that would cancel out the rot symbols.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: And he just made this crazy engine and just pulled way ahead of me.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh my gosh.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: So there's levels to this thing, but I had fun with that.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: It's it took like 30 minutes maybe to play.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that sounds great.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Mystic Veil.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: I it may be older, but don't don't sleep on it, it's still fun.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: Well, a brief internet search uh tells me that John Declair's first cardcrafting game was Mystic Veil.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: Okay, followed by Edge of Darkness, uh, or Dead Reckoning.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: I feel like Deadness I feel like a Dead Reckoning was after Edge of Darkness.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Edge of Darkness, Dead Reckoning, and then Ruins.
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: There's probably more in there too, but I'm I think it was right.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Mystic Veil was number one.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: That was the first one in 2016.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a good time.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: It was a good time.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: That sounds that sounds awesome.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so that's number two.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: And I'm getting sick of talking, so you talk about something.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: So uh I had some end-of-year leave to burn, and so I took a couple days off and had the house to myself.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: So I got to set up um Star Trek Captain's Chair.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Okay, and we had it, I had it at the dining room table, had it all laid out, and I was playing Star Trek Captain's Chair while watching Star Trek.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: And I'm not a stuff I'm not a trekky guy right now, but I'm quickly becoming one.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: Um and it's not really because of the game, I don't know how much lore you can really get into with Captain's Chair, um, besides like the different aliens and stuff that are listed.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: But man, I am still really enjoying that game.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: I've played through two of the campaigns thus far, which is like the 10 games.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: And once you like master the automaton system uh for the solo play, that game flies.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: You can you can do you can run through those games really quick.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: So I'm really enjoying the campaign system.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: Um every game, win or lose, you are kind of like changing your base deck that you're going into the game with.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Um, so you will add cards permanently to your deck that you can carry on forward and kind of morph and shape your strategy as you go through the campaign.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Um the I've I've only played it with like the first two captains, which are like the least complex ones.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: I have I've been a little scared to touch the more complex ones thus far, but right now I'm just kind of like working my way up, still enjoying it, still liking the systems.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: Um, and I haven't even like cracked the other boxes yet.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: So I'm yeah, I'm just trying to milk this one for all it's worth right now, and then maybe I'll start adding in the other boxes once I get curious and or bored, but that has not happened yet.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: So really enjoying that one.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: Um, and I will definitely talk about Star Trek later.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: Yes, please.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: Oh man, oh man, so much to say.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Um then had a had myself a game night last night.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: We had some friends that we worked with up in uh Germany or over in Germany uh that live loc relatively locally, and so we went to go see them and it was kind of a catch-up game night, so it wasn't like a hardcore sit-down, like we're gaming for three hours.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: We had kids running around and stuff, so it was like much lighter fare.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: Um, and we played a game of down up, which is still great.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: That card game rules and will win over anybody that uh had maybe has never played a card shedding game and or wants to get into more card games.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: Um, I think you could teach that game to anybody.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: It's great.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: Down up is might be one of my favorite card games of the year.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: And then uh the other the other one that we played was um Magical Athlete, another game that you like don't have to think about at all.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: The first, the first, the mild mile or whatever was relatively uneventful, like no major special powers triggered.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: Maybe it was just the characters that we drafted that round or whatever.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: It was pretty tame.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: And then we got to wild wild wilds, and it was uh a little more eventful.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Huge baby was knocking people off of squares.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: We got um the third wheel that's like beaming up to everybody.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: We got people that are slipping behind.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: It was that was a lot of fun.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: That game's so good.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: CMYK, they they know what they're doing.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: They do.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: I just love I love a good publisher I can trust.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: CMYK is doing it.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Can we talk about down up for a second?
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about down up for a second.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Because I don't think I've given my take on it.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: I have I have since played it since you uh talked about it on our podcast a while back.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: And I love it.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: I am I am getting more and more into these shedding, climbing, whatever you call it, games.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Some people call them trick-taking games.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: I don't think that's right.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: But I um but yeah, down up is so like you mentioned the agency you have is so much more than some of these other games with the options you have on your turn, whether you want to take those cards from somebody else and make your hand better, or you want to just add a single card to somebody else's set, or yeah, like you never feel like you're at a loss, and it gives you the the rope to hang yourself with sometimes because it's not always a good thing what you what you do.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: But yeah, uh man, yeah, I find myself just like like looking at everybody's cards, I'm like, well if I flip those up and down upside down, I'll be able to I'll be able to add these.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: I get a little bit too excited about trying to add things to my hand, and then I don't end up getting them out of my hand, which is ultimately the goal.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: But yeah, down up is so good.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: I've played it with a bunch of different groups now, and everybody's had a great time.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I feel like the first couple times when people are like, Oh, I can't do anything, and they're like, I'm just I guess I'll just flip my hand, and you have to point out, like, no, no, no, like you can play any singles, you can play a double that's greater than this, you can play that, and people go, Oh, I can do stuff.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: And then like the game clicks, and people start looking at that, and it um, yeah, you you're never sitting on your hands doing nothing.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: Maybe maybe late in the game when you're like really limited, you have like one card left and you can't get it out.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: But man, it keeps people engaged.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: There's like fun decisions to make.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: I am I'm really enjoying that one.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, that's that's awesome.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, do you have anything else to talk about?
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: Because I do I did play two more games like that.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: So all right, hit me.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, I so I mentioned I bought Linko, which is another um shedding type game, and in Linko, the shtick of that one is you it's kind of like um down up in the sense that you're only comparing uh like numbers.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: So, right, if somebody plays a pair, you can play a triple and it has no impact on the pair that was played.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: But if you do play a pair that's higher than you like, as soon as you play a pair, you go look at everybody else what's in front of them.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: And if your pair is higher than theirs, you have the option to um steal those cards and place them in your hand, or you can make them take the cards back into their hand.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Well, you if you don't steal it, they have the option, whether they want to take it back into their hand, or they can discard it and draw two cards from a market or the top of the deck.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: And so it's it's kind it's nice when you do that because the cards that are played in front of you are your positive points at the end of the game.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: So like you want all the cards you get out and they don't get bounced back to your hand are positive points, and whatever's left in your hand is negative points at the end of the game.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of the stick of it, is like you're you're kind of able to steal cards from it.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: It's not that dissimilar from down up in a lot of ways.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, I thought it was a great little game.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: I played Played in like 15-20 minutes, super affordable.
- 22:03unknown: But yeah.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: Do you know who publishes that one?
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: I I mine was from Amigo.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:10unknown: But yeah.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: That sounds fun.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: I'm just digging these games.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: I don't, I mean, they're I used to and I still don't get them, honestly.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Like the strategy of it.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: I, you know, I'm not great, but I used to just be so confused by them.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: I was like, what am I trying to do here?
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: But now it's starting to make a little more sense.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: You know, I got into Scout and then some of these other ones.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: But play Bacon as well, which is one that you sent me a while back.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Bacon's cool because you play on teams and you got this menu.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's a more traditional maybe.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: I don't know what traditional is in this genre, but it's it's more traditional in the fact that someone, if someone leads with a pair, everybody else has to follow with a pair or they have to pass.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: And you just keep going and it has to be higher.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: And and then once everybody passes, that round's kind of over, those cards all get discarded, and that person can lead again with whatever combo they want.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: So bacon has just so many options you can lead with.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: Like it doesn't have to be you can lead with a triple, you can lead with a run of three, you can leave re lead with a run of four.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: There's things called stairs where it's two pairs that are in ascending order, so like a pair of ones and a pair of twos.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: And so it gives you all these options to like play out and lead with, and then that forces everybody to follow that same um pattern.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: But there are these specials that can beat any combo, right?
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: So if you have a quad, which is four of one type of card, even if somebody led with a single, you can kind of trump that with a special.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then once you trump it with a special, then only people can only beat that with a higher special.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: So it's cool.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: I really like bacon with six, it was maybe a little too much, but um because at four or six, you play team, and so at six, like three people are on one team and three people are on the other team.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: Same at four, it's two on one team, two on another.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: And how it works as a team game is essentially if you if you're the one that played the highest um thing out that round, and you get to lead the next one, you can instead of leading yourself, you can have one of your partners lead, which can be a fun tactical decision because you're trying to get your teammates out about the same time you are, because only the team whose player goes out first gets to score points in the round, and they score points based on when their teammates go out.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so if I go out first but my teammate goes out last, you get like one point.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: Whereas if I go out first and my teammate goes out second, you get a lot of points.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: So bacon's fun.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: I like that.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: But yeah, yeah.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: So shedding, climbing, I'm I love card games, and yeah, and it's just a great little foray we've gone down into into this like new new area of card gaming that I've been digging.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: It's amazing that people are still like coming up with innovative designs for card games after all these years.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:16unknown: Yep.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: And they're all they're all still great.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, trick taking's gone through it, and trick, I mean, and shedding and climbing uh has a whole nother like sphere of design space that like I I just I'm just excited to keep seeing what comes out.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: And and those heavier games continue to like adopt some of these mechanics and mechanisms into larger game larger game designs, and it just makes it that much more interesting, like kind of a ground up type of reboot of heavier game design, and I I really like it.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: So that's everything I wanted to debrief.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm I'm good on debrief.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: Let's let's start dipping into our grab bag a little bit.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: I'm eager to get to the grab bag, Klay.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: Let's grab some stuff out of the bag.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Let's grab some stuff out of the bag.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: Let's let's talk about some news first and foremost.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: Uh Disney every year has their D23.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: Are you aware of this?
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: Where they have all the unveilings and the announcements and such?
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: I am.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: I only because I briefly spent uh a lot of time going down the Lorcana rabbit hole, and there was like some big D2 D23 release.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: Yes, very good call.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: So uh Lorcana is coming to digital uh in 2027, currently under development.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: Does this move the needle for you?
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: Do you get back into Lorcana when it comes to digital?
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: So you can play Lorcana on your phone, you can play Lorcana on your PC, and I and I they haven't really gotten into a whole lot of the mechanics of it yet.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: Um, but I imagine I think if this is only digital, so if you have physical cards, you cannot transfer them in like you would.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: I think Magic does that on their digital system.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: Is like if I buy a pack, all those cards are now loaded into my profile digitally.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: I don't think Lorcana's doing that.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: I think it's like all digital assets, and I'm not sure what if they're doing like a pay to play, put pay-to-win type thing.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: Very minimal details on this right now.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: But does this move the needle for you to get back into Lorcana?
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: I would say no.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: No.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: I the these type of games just I mean, when you're in it, it's amazing.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: It's like it's like your world, right?
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, I was in it, like I knew every card in the set, like I knew what they did.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: I and it it's amazing.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Like you feel like you're a part of something, but as soon as you're not, yeah, the the bandwidth to get back to that level feels like such a mountain to climb.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: I'm just like, I don't know if I can do it.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and and it was not like healthy, the collector part of it for me.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: And when I was like, I wanted to just keep buying packs and wanted to collect them all, you know.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: It's just it's gambling.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: It's gambling.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's not, it's not good.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: I like the gameplay, and yeah, I really found it so um well, what's the word?
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Satisfying and rewarding to to be that deep into something and to build your own decks and have thoughts about it and like feel feel intelligent, like this is why I'm gonna stack my deck in this way.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: And uh, but I just don't, I there's no, I don't have the bandwidth, and I shouldn't.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: I shouldn't.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: It's crazy how fast they've been cranking these different sets out.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: Like, I feel like every three months there's a different set, and I I don't know how the meta is keeping up with it.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: I'm sure people like this is the game that they play, this is their lifetime game.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: And as a strategy, I think that they're trying to crank out so many different sets to adjust the meta and to offer people options to play in their strategy.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: Um, but like you already have these people that are taking up so much space in this competitive card game like arena being magic and one piece and uh all these other, I don't know.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: There's a thousand other ones out there that seem to have flesh and blood, that's a big one.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I think that they're trying to continue to eat up market share in this Pokemon, of course, Pokemon, the OG.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I I don't know, man.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: I don't know how the I don't know what the general reception of all of these different sets have been.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: And I don't know if it's moving the meta every single time.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I don't know what the I don't know what competitive Lorcana looks like nowadays.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: I went, I went, I mean, I've I was so into Lorcana that I went to a freaking Lorcana meetup and played.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Like I brought my deck wild.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: I I know for some people listening, that's like, yeah, of course you go to that's not me.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: Like I don't I don't just go meet people I don't know.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: Um it was wild, I mean I was so in it, I was so in it, and it was it was a lot, like it took a lot.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: Well, they have um Lorcana like championship series going on right now.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: The one in North America is ending today as of time of recording on the 30th of August, 30th of August.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, and they're playing them at the different Disney parks or like at hotels near the parks in Paris and Anaheim, and they have a youth division.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: We should see if we can get press passes to like the championship, like the main like championship of the world.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: How about that?
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, we got the we got the street cred.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, no, that'd be a shoe-in.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: And we're obviously experts in Lorcana, so we can speak intelligently about it.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, if anything's been told here, it's that we know everything about this.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: All right, so not gonna get back into Lorcana with the digital version.
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: What about Marvel Snap?
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Did you dabble in Marvel Snap for a while?
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: I maybe played a half a game.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: I yeah, I am not I am not a digital gamer.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: I've never been, I've never been like even high school, college, like I never played games on my phone that much.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: Well, Marvel Snap is a great uh like kind of lane battling card game um that also has an evolving meta.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: But they recently did a big update that has a draft league, and so it's kind of like a run-based thing where you will draft your cards and win as long as you can, and then once you lose, your deck resets and then you draft again.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: And I think people are going back to that in a big way right now because this is like one of their first big updates with a new game mode that they have done.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: So it's what four years running now.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: It's gotta be four years, five years since uh Marvel Snap came out, and that one's still going strong.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: People love that game.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: I'd play it for sure if it was a uh if it was a physical game.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would definitely give it a run.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: Plus, yeah, it's got the Marvel branding.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: Like they they put out cards.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: I I wonder if they are not doing that to keep those characters and the option open to like integrate it into Lorcana somehow.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: Um so yeah, I or maybe not, maybe they just don't want to compete with themselves.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Like you have a Marvel Snap pack and Lorcana pack, and I yeah, I don't even know how you would do that since they're always like they they kind of trickle out cards, yeah, onesies, twosies instead of like these huge sweeping sets like Lorcana.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: So, anyways, that's that's the news we need to cover.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: Do you have any topics for the grab bag, or do you want me to keep rolling?
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you keep going.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm ready to participate in the grab bag in any way you need me to, but okay, minus bringing fresh ideas.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: All right, perfect.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I was listening to a podcast uh the other day, and they were talking about the eight kinds of fun.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: And you are familiar with eight kinds of fun, have not heard of it before.
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: Never heard of it.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: Okay, so this is um it's set up as MDA Mechanics, dynamics, and aesthetics.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's a framework for game design, primarily referring to video games.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: And this designer, Mark LeBlanc, cites a lot of board game designers, and he even has uh board a BGG credit on Heroes Welcome, which I have not heard of before, but he's got design credit on board game geek.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: And so he writes this big like dissertation on the eight kinds of fun in game design.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: And what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna read the description of this type of fun, and I want you to tell me the first game that pops into your head.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Doesn't have to be right or wrong.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: We've never been right here.
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: So, like, whatever.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: First game that pops into your head when I read the description of the type of fun.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: Are you ready?
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: I'm ready.
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: Here we go.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: So the first type of fun is sensation game as sense pleasure, pleasure derived from direct sensory input, such as stunning graphics, great music, tactile components, or rolling heavy handfuls of dice.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: Oh gosh, I I I hate to go back to this, but it's on the brain because of last week.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: But foundations of Rome.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a great one.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, that gives me the sensory overload that I need to just have a great time.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: Gameplay aside.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: Um, I for whatever reason, like the sensory tactile components uh made me think of Honey Buzz because I love squishing those damn jellies.
- 35:21SPEAKER_02: That's like the just the components in the production of that thing are so great.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: Second type of fun is fantasy games as make-believe, the joy of escapism, pretending to be someone else, or exploring a world that does not exist in real life.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Is it cheating to say Dungeons and Dragons?
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: I mean I mean, that's the one that's like commonly referred to.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'll try and be I'll try and be a little more creative.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'll say root.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's a good one.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: Root kind of gives me that that feeling of you know embodying the the role of this faction and you know being creative in the way I politic and strategize around the board.
- 36:05SPEAKER_02: So and it's one where like your strategy changes depending on the faction that you're assigned, right?
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: Like yeah, it's almost you step into that role-playing naturally instead of having it be a core mechanic, right?
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I would say even some of like social deduction games to almost put you in in roles of you know, lying or you know, making you assume uh a personality you might not otherwise have.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: You gotta lean into it if you want to win the game.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: Okay, I like it.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: Uh the third type of fun is narrative games as unfolding story, engaging with a dramatic storyline lore or narrative arc that unfolds as you play.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: Oof.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: That's a that I mean I I want to go back to Dungeons and Dragons again.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, is Dungeons and Dragons just the ultimate fun?
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: Is what I'm is what I'm feeling.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Um narrative.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: Maybe maybe Vantage Okay has like a little little arcs within.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh these aren't the typical types of games that I play.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: So I would I would have to defer to someone who might be a solo gamer on this podcast to think of a better narrative type game.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the one that came to mind for me was Tainted Grail.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: That whole series is like about living in Arthurian legend, and the world kind of adapts to you as you play, and um the narrative, whether you're playing solo or multiplayer, really evolves and comes to light over time, to include the RPG that they have.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: Um, there's a lot of deep lore in there and and such cool world building.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: Um the narrative of those games is so good.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: It's so great.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: Next type, uh, I think we're on number four is challeng challenge games as an obstacle course.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: The satisfaction of overcoming difficult obstacles, solving puzzles, or mastering game mechanics through skills and persistence.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: I like I like a cooperative game for this.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Because a lot of those are puzzles you're trying to solve.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: So I'll go with like um take time.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's a good one.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you know, you're working together, trying to you get dealt these obstacles that you have to deal with when you're playing these cards out around this clock, and you have to work together to overcome that obstacle, and it feels great when you do it, and it makes you want to go back when you don't and try again.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: That's that's a good one.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna shout out friend of the show Peter C.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: Hayward and give his new design, Baba is you, credit, because that's what this video game is, um, let alone the board game, I think is going to adapt that very smartly from what I've seen.
- 39:20SPEAKER_02: So you are that's the whole mechanic is like solving a puzzle through manipulating the world.
- 39:27SPEAKER_02: And I think that running that sort of obstacle course is going to tickle people's brains in the right way.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna shout out Peter C.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: Hayward's design, Baba is you, for challenge as a type of fun.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: That sounds so weird.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Baba is you not knowing anything about the the video game and just hearing the name and then hearing you and Peter talk about what it is.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: I was like, that sounds weird.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: It's crazy.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: It is a it is like a mind-melting video game, and I'm sure that the board game will be just the same, and I can't wait.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, the next type of fun is fellowship games as social framework, the social connection, teamwork, and camaraderie built by playing and interacting with other people.
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: I I blew my load on cooperative games on the last one.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Uh okay, fellowship, fellowship.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: When I think of a fellowship type game, I think of your like beer and pretzels type game where people you're not cooperating together, but you're having a good time.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: A game is a social lubricant.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna go back to you know, one of these, you know, shedding type card games.
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: You're playing a game like down up or you know, freaking jungle, whatever it is, but you're everybody's just around the table.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: The rules are simple, everybody can appreciate card games.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Those have been around for millennia, maybe long, maybe longer than a millennia.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: Uh, and so when I think of us like having a good time around the table with people, it's just playing a card game like that.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: That's a good one.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: Um, and I also went to card game, and this one's for Jared.
- 41:13SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna shout out uh Bonanza because you are like negotiating, you're creating these like kind of unsaid alliances with people as you offer them up the beans that they need versus the beans that you need, and yeah, and you end up with a social dynamic and a social framework really quickly in that game.
- 41:34SPEAKER_02: The second negotiations start to get uh a little spicy.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: So yeah, that's gonna be my fellowship game.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Okay, the next next type of fun is discovery games as uncharted territory, the thrill of exploring unknown maps, finding hidden secrets, and learning how a game systems work.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: Can I go with Vantage again?
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: Um God, I mean, I I feel like that these elements of fun are just like really leaning into a particular type of game.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: That I'm not necessarily that well versed in, right?
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: I don't usually play these broader scoping games.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Um what the this is called Discovery.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: Discovery, games as uncharted territory.
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: Let me shh, I'll I'll try and think of a lighter one while you say something.
- 42:36SPEAKER_02: Um well, I don't really have a lighter one per se, but I was digging through my boxes of games the other day and I found uh by Scorpion Mask the Dead Cells board game.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: And that one, you open up the box and it's got a bunch of different tuck boxes for the different realms that you visit as your characters.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: And I just think stuff like that that have like the tuck boxes that you unveil over time that slowly change the mechanisms.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that's discovery so much as like progression, but I think if those tuck boxes change the world and or the way that you interact with the game in some sort of way, I think that can be discovery, maybe.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, and in a lighter sense, again, I'm not uncovering anything new, but the Hobbit is a pretty well-known story.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: But playing the Hobbit there and back again by Office Dog, um, as you go through each of those chapters and you you know, you're like, okay, well, this is a chapter about the spider.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: Well, now I'm discovering a new rule set and a new way to interact with the game.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's not necessarily a big sprawling campaign game, but it does give you that sense of progression, as you said.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: And I I again this isn't my forte in gaming.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: I my my my core weight is 2.0.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: And lighter.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: So uh not a ton of narrative discovery games in my repertoire.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: But yeah, that's that's the best I got there.
- 44:08SPEAKER_02: I think Vantage is a great one for this, though.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: It really is.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: You have a decision to make.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: Like, do I do I fight this creature that I discovered?
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: Do I try and talk to it?
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: Do I turn left?
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: Do I turn right?
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: Do I there's so much decision and discovery?
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: Like every decision you make will lead you somewhere new down a narrative path.
- 44:27SPEAKER_02: And I that is such an ambitious game.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: Man, I'm yeah, I that that game has been in my brain a lot lately.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: Next type of fun is expression games as self-discovery/slash soapbox, creativity and self-identity, allowing players to build, customize, or play in a unique style that reflects who they are.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: I'm all over the place on this.
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: As you first started, my head was going to party games, you know, like your Soaklovers and just ones where you're expressing yourself through your creativity and giving clues and figuring out how your brain works.
- 45:12SPEAKER_00: But then later in your description, it started leaning more towards like things like how I play the game is my expression.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: Like, am I going to you know be combative, or am I going to try to you know take the the resource gathering engine?
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: Like I think about when playing Dead Reckoning, you could you could go out and try and be the pirate that was you know just getting in fights with everybody, or I always like to just kind of set up a little a little island economy economy right by the port and just kind of try and get my points going back and forth the port.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: So I don't know what what way are you feeling about this?
- 45:57SPEAKER_02: I also kind of thought about party games initially.
- 45:59SPEAKER_02: Um, those kinds of I thought about like the guerrilla marketing game that we talked about a long time ago that I got rid of.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: I wish I would not have.
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: I think I gave it to Jared actually.
- 46:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:10SPEAKER_02: Um, but you are writing down like names of companies and their slogans and like a marketing campaign, and that kind of creativity allows you to express yourself in a big way.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: I also think that this one um this one could be root.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: If if we go back, if we go back and do like the world that unfolds, the kind of narrative.
- 46:34SPEAKER_02: Um, maybe that one's a hoy, and then this one is root.
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 46:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you can you can definitely like change your play style based on who you are as a person.
- 46:44SPEAKER_02: Maybe you don't want to be mean, maybe you're just like a mean person and want to go after the other people.
- 46:48SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: Um, but I I I initially went to party games as well.
- 46:52SPEAKER_02: That's a good form of creativity and uh reflection of who you are.
- 46:58SPEAKER_02: Or what was the one that you wrote talked about?
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: Telestrations?
- 47:01SPEAKER_02: Was that the one that you talked about a couple weeks ago?
- 47:04SPEAKER_02: What was the drawing game?
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, Pictomania.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: Pictomania, that's the one.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, yeah, that's a good one.
- 47:10SPEAKER_02: That's a good uh self-expression type game.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:16unknown: Okay.
- 47:17SPEAKER_02: Okay, you ready for the last one?
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: This is the last one.
- 47:20SPEAKER_02: Last one.
- 47:22SPEAKER_02: The last type of fun is submission games as mindless pastimes relaxing through repetitive or structured tasks, often seen in grinding, farming, or casual time killer games.
- 47:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: What comes to my mind here?
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: Repetitive tasks.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: Um cozy games.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: This is kind of like man, I think of like Cascadia, where you're just drafting a set of tiles, pretty much whatever you do is gonna be good.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can make smarter decisions, but at the end of the day, like if there's a bear and a jungle token, you can put them somewhere where it's gonna be beneficial to you and you can make it work.
- 48:14SPEAKER_00: It's not it's not a big deal.
- 48:16SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I think a game like that can fit in this category.
- 48:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:23SPEAKER_02: I I initially thought of Gentle Rain, the game of like placing tiles to produce flowers, and you're trying to get all the flowers out on out on your little pond, your little koi pond.
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: That's like so cozy, and you can play it solo or uh with another player.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: That one's great.
- 48:42SPEAKER_02: Um there's also like tons of games that are based on video games that do this, like the Stardew Valley video game or board game.
- 48:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you've got um like the zoo tycoon board game.
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: There's lots of board games that try and mimic this type of oh, dwarf romantic.
- 49:02SPEAKER_02: Dwarf Romantic, cozy game, kind of mindless tile placing score maximization game, where even if you don't you're not keeping track of score or whatever, you're just kind of making this nice little dutchy that's building out over time.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, those are the games that kind of come to mind.
- 49:20SPEAKER_02: So those are the eight types of fun.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: We've got sensation, fantasy, narrative, challenge, fellowship, discovery, expression, and submission.
- 49:29SPEAKER_02: And I'm really curious what other people think about this one.
- 49:32SPEAKER_02: If if you are listening to this and you had my games in mind that we did not mention, shout them out in the comments because I'm super curious to know what other people thought of immediately when they hear these eight types of fun.
- 49:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, given a little more time, I probably could have thought about better, but we we're doing this on the fly, um, Operation Game Night style.
- 49:52SPEAKER_00: So that's right.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: It is what it is.
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: Uh I would be curious if there's a game that you that pops into your mind that is that just hits on so many of these categories.
- 50:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, to me, Dungeons and Dragons can almost can almost hit all of those, but maybe the the last one, whatever that one was called.
- 50:18SPEAKER_00: The idle fun, the submission games as a mindless one.
- 50:22SPEAKER_00: When you go through the checklist of the rest of them, like, oh yeah, that's that's Dungeons and Dragons.
- 50:26SPEAKER_00: That's Dungeons and Dragons.
- 50:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, is there is there one that pops into your mind that hits all of them?
- 50:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, Vantage is a big one.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: Root, like the these games that you kind of like live in a world and embody a type of character and your decisions are a reflection of who you are, like any of those types of games.
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: I I'm curious.
- 50:55SPEAKER_02: There's probably a bunch of games out there that I'm missing that people are like screaming into their computer andor phone, and yeah, I'm missing them.
- 51:04SPEAKER_02: So if you have an I a good idea that fits those categories, like let us know because I'm super curious.
- 51:10SPEAKER_00: Was this meant for eight elements of fun?
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: Was it in regard to video games?
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, traditionally it's video games.
- 51:18SPEAKER_02: I think the Matt LeBlanc is a video game designer.
- 51:22SPEAKER_02: Um he does have a couple of board game designs under his belt, or he has some credits on BGG.
- 51:28SPEAKER_02: So um, I but he he pulls a lot of inspiration from board game designers.
- 51:33SPEAKER_02: Like on his eight types of fun, eight kinds of fun website, he has a podcast by Richard Garfield that's linked.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: So I just feel like this would be different, a little different if it was board game centric.
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: Because I just kind of limited in some of the things you can do with a board game.
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 51:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just felt like it was very, it was very like the going through those eight.
- 52:00SPEAKER_00: I just felt like it was pushing towards one type of board game, which might not be one type of video game because they have more maybe, I don't know, freedom to you know design things because you're not limited by physical components and things like that.
- 52:19SPEAKER_00: But um, I don't know.
- 52:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and and the way that you interact with video games is different, right?
- 52:26SPEAKER_02: It's a inherently a dexterity type um dexterity type interaction where you have are like handling a controller in some form or function to make a character do something in a world, right?
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: Or manipulate this the space.
- 52:45SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, that's like a whole different rabbit hole we could go down between like differences, but let's put a pin in that.
- 52:52SPEAKER_00: I let's put a pin in that.
- 52:53SPEAKER_00: That was a funny thing.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:56SPEAKER_02: Let's put a pin in that one because I we could spend a whole hour just talking about the differences between the two.
- 53:00SPEAKER_02: So um we want to go over the fence real quick.
- 53:04SPEAKER_02: Let's go over the fence quick.
- 53:06SPEAKER_02: All right, what have you been doing outside of board gaming?
- 53:08SPEAKER_00: Uh, outside of board gaming, I I wore this shirt.
- 53:13SPEAKER_00: Let's see if you can see it.
- 53:15SPEAKER_02: And Juliet and Juliet Ampersand Juliet and Juliet.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: I went to my first uh Broadway show in New York City last week and saw and Juliet, and it was awesome.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: Um, so this uh musical is essentially as if well, how it starts is it's got William Shake.
- 53:42SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go through the whole thing, so I hope you have time, Travis.
- 53:45SPEAKER_00: Um William Shakespeare is writing Romeo and Juliet, and his wife is like asking him about the ending, and he's like, Yeah, and then they're both gonna die.
- 53:55SPEAKER_00: And his wife's like, Well, that sounds stupid, like that's a dumb ending.
- 54:00SPEAKER_00: Let me help you write it.
- 54:01SPEAKER_00: And so it's like kind of like this breaking the fourth wall of like William Shakespeare and his wife fighting over writing the story of Romeo and Juliet without Juliet dying.
- 54:13SPEAKER_00: And like, it's a kind of like feminist girl power, like Juliet's like going on to live her best life after Romeo.
- 54:20SPEAKER_00: Like she only knew him for three days, whatever.
- 54:22SPEAKER_00: Like, let's let's move on.
- 54:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, but the cool part is it's all songs from our era, like Backstreet Boys, like Britney Spears, and they work these songs into the story in a way that makes sense.
- 54:43SPEAKER_00: So, like when they're singing, like Show Me the Shape of Your Heart, it's like, you know, it fits, it fits, and it's like in a way that you wouldn't think, but it just works into the story all these songs that just we grew up as these like pop icon songs.
- 54:58SPEAKER_00: It's got like Katy Perry boom, like it was so much fun.
- 55:02SPEAKER_00: It was pitch perfect kind of esque, like where you're just getting covers of these awesome songs, and oh my gosh, I had a blast.
- 55:12SPEAKER_00: It was that sounds fun.
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was a fun time, like it it might not have been the best musical in the world, like just in terms of like I mean, there's high bars out there, but it was pure entertaining and fun the whole time.
- 55:26SPEAKER_00: That sounds great, yeah.
- 55:28SPEAKER_00: So highly recommend if that if that comes off Broadway near you, give it a give it a whirl.
- 55:35SPEAKER_02: I was thinking about you because um I think Hades Town is coming to Denver.
- 55:39SPEAKER_02: Oh I uh would like to go see it, but I don't know what to do with a two-year-old during Hades Town.
- 55:46SPEAKER_02: So we'll we'll see.
- 55:48SPEAKER_00: You know what you know what you can do, just bring the baby.
- 55:51SPEAKER_00: Well, just buy it on Amazon Prime now.
- 55:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, that that too.
- 55:55SPEAKER_00: Yep, it just came just came out last week on on Prime Video, and I bought it and have watched it again already because I freaking love Hades Town.
- 56:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I might have to do that.
- 56:06SPEAKER_02: Um, this probably works better as a cold open, but are you like a fall flavors type of guy, Clayton?
- 56:15SPEAKER_02: Your pumpkin spice lattes, your apple pie spice, like that type of stuff.
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: We can take it or leave it.
- 56:22SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah, you're not you don't go all in on that type of stuff.
- 56:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't get wild about it.
- 56:27SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm I'll I'll eat your pumpkin pies and I'll drink your lattes, but I'm not I'm not counting down the days.
- 56:35SPEAKER_02: Hmm.
- 56:36SPEAKER_02: So the other day uh we were making pancakes for breakfast, and I like a little apple pie space or like some cinnamon, some nutmeg in my pancakes every once in a while.
- 56:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 56:48SPEAKER_02: And we did not have any of those other ones.
- 56:51SPEAKER_02: So the one that was available was pumpkin spice, like the pre-mixed pumpkin spice Kroger brand flavoring.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: And so I put just a little bit of that in the pancakes, kind of mix things up, make it like zhuzh it up a little bit.
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and something to to quote a musical, something has changed within me.
- 57:15SPEAKER_02: And that day I was like, Oh, I'm gonna run to the store, gotta go pick up some groceries for the week.
- 57:20SPEAKER_02: And I was checking out and I looked at my cart and I had like probably 10 different items that were all fall flavors.
- 57:27SPEAKER_02: Like I got the apple, the apple cinnamon Cheerios, I got the stupid pumpkin spice creamer.
- 57:33SPEAKER_02: I even had like they had the the racks of beer, like the pumpkin beer.
- 57:37SPEAKER_02: Are you pumpkin beer guy?
- 57:39SPEAKER_02: No, yeah.
- 57:40SPEAKER_02: I I don't even really like I don't even go for pumpkin beer all that much.
- 57:45SPEAKER_02: I had like two cases of pumpkin beer in my dart, and so I something has changed within me, and now I am yeah, all things not the same, Travis.
- 57:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, something's not the same.
- 57:59SPEAKER_02: Um, so that happened that and I'm yeah, it's gonna take me forever to work through all that stuff.
- 58:06SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I am I'm in it now, and all the all the companies are rolling out all their pumpkin spice things.
- 58:13SPEAKER_02: I'm not even a pumpkin spice girly, and I just leaned in I still leaned in.
- 58:19SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I don't know what happened, man.
- 58:20SPEAKER_02: I blacked out and I I should I checked out with a thousand different things of fall flavors, so nothing wrong with that.
- 58:30SPEAKER_02: What else you got over the fence?
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: Um, I just like to report that I am officially a regular at the wing place near me.
- 58:41SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 58:41SPEAKER_00: It's been it's taken some time.
- 58:44SPEAKER_00: Um, we've been putting in every Friday we go there.
- 58:48SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 58:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's pretty religious, but we've had the same waitress most of the time.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: And I mean, the this is kind of late reporting.
- 58:57SPEAKER_00: Uh, we've kind of been a regular for a little while, but I figured figure the podcast needs to know.
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: We had our wing place in Colorado, we would always go to Golden Flame.
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: In fact, I even got a tattoo of it the last time I was there.
- 59:09SPEAKER_00: Uh, right there it is.
- 59:10SPEAKER_00: That's the Golden Flame.
- 59:11SPEAKER_00: That's Golden Flame.
- 59:13SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 59:13SPEAKER_00: What?
- 59:14SPEAKER_00: Right there it is, Travis.
- 59:15SPEAKER_00: So go to go to Golden Flame.
- 59:17SPEAKER_00: Um, support them if you're in Colorado Springs.
- 59:20SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 59:23SPEAKER_00: I can't believe you didn't know.
- 59:25SPEAKER_00: I did not know that.
- 59:26SPEAKER_00: That's insane.
- 59:27SPEAKER_00: Me, Spanky, and Carlin got the Golden Flame tattoos.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 59:32SPEAKER_00: So my God.
- 59:34SPEAKER_00: Anyway, it's a thing for me uh being a regular somewhere and really a wing place because that's speaks to me.
- 59:42SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 59:42SPEAKER_00: But yeah, so we've been putting in our time here since we moved to Pennsylvania at Aruga's.
- 59:46SPEAKER_00: And you know, now we got our waitress, we go there.
- 59:50SPEAKER_00: I bought a shirt, so now I go there and I wear the shirt.
- 59:53SPEAKER_00: And it's just great.
- 59:54SPEAKER_00: So I nothing really to say other than it feels good to be a regular somewhere.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_00: So it does.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_00: You know, you got to put in some work, you gotta make it a priority to keep going back and back, and you're not trying new places, but it's it's fun once you get to that status of regular.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_00: You go in, they know you, and you're just you're just there.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: That's your joint.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: Like everybody knows I go to Aruga's on Friday night.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_00: Usually somebody from my family or Mary's family shows up there too because they know we're at Aruga's on Friday night.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_00: And I love that routine.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_00: I love I love their wings, they got some great flavors.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: I'll take you, Travis, if you come early in September.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_00: Um, we will go to Aruga's.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_00: I promise you that.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_02: So uh whenever I get asked a question, like if you could eat one food for the rest of your life, my answer is always wings.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's so many different flavors, and then and a good wing is hard to beat, and I'm a sucker for a chicken wing on any menu.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_02: So good.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_02: You're gonna have to.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_02: I hope I hope it holds up.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna buy myself a t-shirt and everything when I go to Aruga's.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_02: So okay, right on.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_02: All right, bet.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_02: I'm going to Aruga's when we get uh PA.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_02: First order of business.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_02: That's the first order of business.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_02: My last thing for over the fence, Star Trek.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_02: I have been getting into Star Trek a little bit, sort of dipping my toe into the original series.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: I freaking love it, man.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_02: It's great.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_02: Umriginal series came out in 1966.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_02: William Shatner looks great in it.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_02: He's like just a hunk from episode two because he's not the original captain.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_02: Captain Pike is the original captain in episode one, season one of Star Trek, the original series, Captain Pike, and he's also a good-looking dude.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_02: Uh then episode two, no explanation.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_02: They change over to Captain Kirk.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_02: And I imagine it's because a it's a pilot, and they're like, well, maybe this guy doesn't want to agree for a longer season or can't keep him on long term, whatever it was.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_02: I I need to shout out the actor, but um, maybe I'll come with that next week.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_02: So they switch to Kirk, William Shatner, episode two, but then they kind of like weave Captain Pike into the lore later on.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_02: Like Pike shows up in the movies.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_02: Um, The Strange New Worlds, I think, is like this the year before Captain Kirk takes over the Enterprise, and it's all Captain Pike.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_02: So like he becomes this cornerstone, even though he appears in one episode.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_02: And the thing that strikes me is like the original series.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_02: I I love the original Twilight Zone, okay?
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_02: Like the horror, the mystery, the thriller, kind of like what is going to happen.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_02: Every single episode feels like that, but it's more science fiction than thriller.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_02: And it's just like it's played for old TV sets as a serial, and the reactions are big, their facial expressions are big because they're trying to like you know translate emotion through like fuzzy TVs back in the day.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_02: But the remaster is so good, man.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_02: Like they they update some of the graphics, and it's not quite as like cheesy as it once was.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_02: Like they use proper CGI when you see the Enterprise flying around.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_02: But I am really enjoying it, like, especially you look at this, um, they're not military, but they are like explorers that are part of Starfleet, that are uh out there, you know, doing diplomacy and and combat when necessary, and they're kind of like jack of all trades.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_02: But you look at Captain Kirk, who is a man that is like legitimately trying to do his best by the people on his ship and the people that he interacts with on a episode-by-episode basis.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_02: He's navigating the world as he deems appropriate, and he's like legitimately just trying to be a good person and a good leader.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_02: And I think that there's like lessons to be gained by watching this.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm hooked.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_02: There's some there's some certainly some problematic things that happen in the 60s uh on TV.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_02: The very first episode, they're like, Why is there a woman working on the bridge?
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_02: Like, there's some outdated stuff that happens, sure.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_02: Um, but man, it's it's so good.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_02: It gets wacky, it gets weird.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_02: There's my initial interpretation of the original series was like, you see these really bad cuts of like every cheesy thing that happens in the original series, but like those are relatively few and far between, and they don't they don't pull you out of the story all that often.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_02: Like the the last episode I just watched opens with uh Mr.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_02: Sulu holding a dog that's wearing an alien costume is like a little terrier that's in dressed up as an alien, and I'm like, okay, I it's it's silly, it's silly, yeah.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_02: But like the dog's on on screen for all of like three minutes in the episode, you get over it, it's fine, like you move on with your life.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_02: The old tech and like the the discussions of like oh the ionizer crystals and stuff, it's all silly, but the core storylines are good, and Captain Kirk's and Spock's relationship is good.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_02: Like, I I cannot wait.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_02: I'm there's three seasons of the original series, I'm gonna burn through all of them.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_02: I'm already like six or seven episodes deep.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_02: Um it's so good, man.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_02: And and if you're like, hey, I want to watch along with you, it is on Paramount Plus, um Star Wars uh Star Trek, the original series remastered from 1966.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_02: It's so good.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm burning through it, man.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, it it I've like I said, I've I've not seen any of like the older stuff, but I have watched The Strange New Worlds, okay, and I've watched some of the movies, and I've watched The Orville, which is the and I just love that the the core premise just gives you so much creative freedom to create these scenarios where you get to see people navigate these interesting situations.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_00: And uh, and again, if you have that protagonist that's like generally good and trying to make good decisions, you like feel invested and you like you're part of that decision-making process.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_00: And it's uh I want to like we're we're in the middle of a series right now, but as soon as we finish it, I'm gonna pitch this to Mary and see what happens.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_02: I I think it's I think it's good, man.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_02: The episodes are like less than an hour.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_02: The like the the foil, the dichomedy, dichomedy dichotomy between Kirk and Spock, like Spock being emotionless and logical, and Kirk like leading with his heart is so good.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_02: You watch these two like kind of butt heads sometimes and sometimes like be in support of one another.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_02: Um the the antagonist of the show is sometimes not even a real person.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_02: It's like sometimes it's just space travel, like space travel is hard, and being out in unknown places at unknown planets is hard.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_02: Keeping a ship together with two, you know, 248 people on board is hard.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_02: Um, and they just encounter weird zany characters from across the galaxy.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_02: It yeah, it's so good.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_02: It's so good.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_02: You've got me so pumped right now.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm pumped about it.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_02: I I'm really digging it.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna report back frequently about Star Trek, the original series, because I'm loving it, man.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_02: It's so good.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna follow your lead, Travis.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_00: That sounds awesome.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_02: Please do.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_02: I'm eager to discuss this with somebody.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_02: Okay, let's do it.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_02: All right, did we do it?
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_02: We did it.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_02: We did it.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_02: Go get your golden flame tattoos, everybody, so we can match up with Clay.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, this has been the Operation Game Night Podcast.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_02: I have been your host, Travis Smith.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_02: He has my been my co-host, Clayton Gable.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_02: This has been a grab bag episode of fun.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_02: And we'll see you next week.
