- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey guys, it's Zach Braf here. I just wanted to
- 0:02Speaker 1: open the show and talk about merch because Donald and
- 0:05Speaker 1: I always forget to talk about merch. And Christmas is
- 0:08Speaker 1: coming up, and you know what your loved ones want,
- 0:11Speaker 1: and you know what you want more than anything really
- 0:13Speaker 1: is some good old fake doctors, real friends, merch. Most
- 0:16Speaker 1: appropriately for Christmas, there's a Christmas ornament of me riding
- 0:19Speaker 1: Donald Eagle style, not any other style, me riding Donald.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It's a beautiful ornament. And I'm gonna tell you about
- 0:27Speaker 1: everything else on here real quick. What you do is
- 0:29Speaker 1: you go to Cottonbureau dot com and then just search
- 0:33Speaker 1: for fake doctors cottonbureau dot com and then search for
- 0:38Speaker 1: fake doctors. There's wrapping paper with our faces on it.
- 0:42Speaker 1: There's a beach towel. There's a washcloth because you know,
- 0:45Speaker 1: we like to talk about washcloths. There's three different T shirts.
- 0:50Speaker 1: There's a pop socket for your phone of me eagling Donald.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Oh.
- 0:55Speaker 1: This is really cool. For those of you who have
- 0:56Speaker 1: to wear a badge to work, particularly in the medical profession,
- 1:00Speaker 1: there's a badge holder with our faces on it that
- 1:03Speaker 1: has one of those pull out things for when you
- 1:05Speaker 1: have to swipe your badge on things. I want one
- 1:07Speaker 1: of those, and I don't even have a place to
- 1:09Speaker 1: wear a badge. I see someone made a Queen Joel
- 1:13Speaker 1: T shirt. I don't even know if that's through us
- 1:14Speaker 1: or what, but ah this I see there's some like
- 1:18Speaker 1: after marketing looking ones things, meaning we didn't make them.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But anyway, there's cool stuff on you.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Also, most importantly, there's a few of our legendary onesies left,
- 1:26Speaker 1: but they're only small and medium. If you happen to
- 1:29Speaker 1: be a smaller medium human being, you could get one
- 1:32Speaker 1: of those limited edition onesies we made, which are pretty hilarious.
- 1:37Speaker 1: That's it. Go check out the store. There's cool stuff
- 1:40Speaker 1: for your Christmas, gift giving season, and Hanukah and Kwanza
- 1:45Speaker 1: and any other holiday where you give presents. Okay, here's
- 1:49Speaker 1: the show. I have a cold. Donald, I'm sorry.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Listen, I'm gonna tell you something. Guess what. I still
- 1:56Speaker 3: love you even with your cold.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Let me tell you something you might let me tell
- 2:02Speaker 1: you something. Let me tell you something. To be the
- 2:06Speaker 1: worst time to be single ever is when you have
- 2:07Speaker 1: a cold. Nobody's taking care of me. I got a
- 2:12Speaker 1: leaf flower next door that I really want to go
- 2:14Speaker 1: talk to mister leaf flower and say, bro, not today.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'm sick, I'm irritable, and your leaf flower, I believe
- 2:24Speaker 1: the law is in LA you have to switch to electric.
- 2:26Speaker 4: It's time well electric. If you could smell it, it's
- 2:31Speaker 4: a bad idea.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Smell it. It's so loud. Everyone's just blowing the leaves
- 2:38Speaker 1: to each other's part.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Electric leaf flower is going to be really loud too.
- 2:42Speaker 1: No, they're not that bad.
- 2:44Speaker 4: I haven't. I know how loud that shit is listening. Okay,
- 2:47Speaker 4: I can combat the motherfucking gardener next door. When they're
- 2:50Speaker 4: blowing all the dust on me, I'm like, no, fuck you.
- 2:55Speaker 3: And that shit go outside.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I go outside and I see the neighbor's gardener is
- 2:59Speaker 1: just blowing the leaf he's onto my property. And then
- 3:01Speaker 1: the next day my guy comes and blows the leaves
- 3:03Speaker 1: on his property.
- 3:05Speaker 3: I love it.
- 3:06Speaker 1: It's a what do they call Daniel cycle? A Sissaphian task.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Yeah, or or a borrow's a snake eating itself. But yeah,
- 3:14Speaker 5: it could be fantastic. Was pulling on the rock up
- 3:18Speaker 5: the hill, yeah, and that just.
- 3:20Speaker 3: It could just be a vicious cycle.
- 3:22Speaker 1: So when you get sick, does your level, like take
- 3:25Speaker 1: care of you and make you soup and tell you
- 3:27Speaker 1: she loves you and rub your back.
- 3:29Speaker 3: No, she's like, get the fuck away from me.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Oh that sounds not worth it. It's not.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Back and obey. When we were when we were first
- 3:39Speaker 3: starting out, absolutely once the kids got there, was like, nah,
- 3:44Speaker 3: you're not if it ain't if you're not sick, If
- 3:46Speaker 3: you're not a sick child, I don't want to hear it.
- 3:49Speaker 1: So when you have a cold, you don't get any
- 3:51Speaker 1: extra love and any any back rubs, any I got
- 3:54Speaker 1: you babies.
- 3:58Speaker 3: No, I get that. Don't fucking touch me.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Wow, Okay, you're sick.
- 4:04Speaker 4: But she likes to get cuddled when she that's the
- 4:06Speaker 4: only time. That's when I know she's sick. When she's
- 4:08Speaker 4: like and she's trying to tries to cuddle up.
- 4:12Speaker 3: And that feels like me, are you sick?
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah, that's like me if I was at your house
- 4:16Speaker 1: right now, that's what I'd be trying to do, trying
- 4:18Speaker 1: to do, like what do you give me a little
- 4:20Speaker 1: give me a little big spoon?
- 4:22Speaker 3: What are you sick of? Something?
- 4:24Speaker 1: You see that funny cartoon that guy drew us on Instagram?
- 4:27Speaker 3: What is it?
- 4:28Speaker 1: What you want do you want to meet in your head? Yeah,
- 4:32Speaker 1: it's so funny. I want that on merch, except I
- 4:35Speaker 1: don't like my nose. He really, he really did a
- 4:37Speaker 1: number on my nose.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I like that as a picture in the house piece.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I like that. If I could, if
- 4:46Speaker 1: I could get him to reconsider my nose, I might
- 4:48Speaker 1: like it on merch.
- 4:49Speaker 4: He should print it like thirty times and see how
- 4:55Speaker 4: much he can get one for thirty two, for thirty three.
- 4:57Speaker 3: You know like that. He should do that.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Oh, I would argue, I would like him to talk.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I would just like to give him some notes on
- 5:04Speaker 1: my nose first before he does his limited edition prints.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Dude, it's a cartoon man. Look at the size of
- 5:09Speaker 3: my forehead.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Come on, I know, but can you draw me with
- 5:14Speaker 1: a big nose and not have it you that bad?
- 5:23Speaker 1: So vain, I'm so vain that I'm like analyzing my
- 5:26Speaker 1: nose on a caricature.
- 5:28Speaker 3: On one of the like on street art character too.
- 5:32Speaker 1: It's funny though, caricature caricature too. I finally got Casey
- 5:38Speaker 1: to be texting me again because I found a good
- 5:41Speaker 1: show for us to watch, A good watch, True Crime.
- 5:45Speaker 1: There's my trick This is my trick with the faisons.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I've given up on Donald's. He's not a good text friend.
- 5:51Speaker 3: I don't watch TV shots.
- 5:52Speaker 1: No, you also just like you don't reply, and.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Yeah I do, I reply haha or yeah.
- 5:58Speaker 1: This is what happens. I send Donald an he doesn't
- 6:01Speaker 1: even write. He doesn't even it's a meme. He doesn't
- 6:03Speaker 1: even write lol or heart it. He just reposts it
- 6:06Speaker 1: on his ship like he found it right.
- 6:09Speaker 3: And all my memes are all of my memes that
- 6:11Speaker 3: I post, like, if it's not stop motion animation, Zach
- 6:15Speaker 3: probably sent it to me and look at it, but
- 6:17Speaker 3: I look at it like you sent it to me,
- 6:19Speaker 3: because you're like, I can't post this, but you can post.
- 6:23Speaker 1: No, they're not all like that, some of them. Well,
- 6:25Speaker 1: first of all, you post more crazy shit than I
- 6:28Speaker 1: post on my shit. I just send them to you
- 6:31Speaker 1: to make you laugh. The reason only way I know
- 6:33Speaker 1: that you laughed is that you repost them on your Instagram.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Now you have a horrible text chat game. Well, Casey,
- 6:40Speaker 1: the trick with her because she's got a lot going
- 6:41Speaker 1: on with them kids and you is I get her
- 6:44Speaker 1: into a good true crime show and then we text
- 6:46Speaker 1: back and forth like, can you believe what she's doing.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Last night?
- 6:52Speaker 1: Eleven last night, like eleven thirty, she's texting me, Oh,
- 6:54Speaker 1: I'm moving on to number episode two. I'm so mad
- 6:57Speaker 1: at this bitch. Oh man, I'm like that sounds like
- 7:13Speaker 1: my I'm gonna read I'm gonna read these texts in
- 7:16Speaker 1: the morning.
- 7:17Speaker 3: So that's what you guys were watching. She didn't make it.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Man, Zach what shows says? Oh, it's called it's so
- 7:32Speaker 1: fucked up.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Hold on, I forget that we're on I forget that
- 7:35Speaker 3: we're on TV. Now. She's not dressed, so never mind
- 7:40Speaker 3: passed out. She didn't make it. She didn't make she
- 7:43Speaker 3: didn't make uh, she didn't make it through five minutes
- 7:47Speaker 3: into the second episode, I walked in there, She's like, ship,
- 7:49Speaker 3: I fell asleep again.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Well, this is on television, so you gotta remember that.
- 7:54Speaker 4: What's it called, well, titties is nice?
- 7:58Speaker 1: Are you making naked?
- 8:01Speaker 3: She's naked.
- 8:02Speaker 6: I have a shirt on, but I don't have a
- 8:04Speaker 6: brawl on.
- 8:04Speaker 7: And you know I have gigantic tits and they're not gigantic.
- 8:07Speaker 3: But they are.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Well our viewers could use a little lie. Why are
- 8:14Speaker 1: you framing yourself out. What is that?
- 8:16Speaker 6: I'm right here, I'm looking in that thing.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Well, give us a little something, okay.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Blurt bla.
- 8:27Speaker 1: What's the name of the show? I forgot it? It's
- 8:29Speaker 1: called Lies? Anatomy of Lies?
- 8:32Speaker 6: What a crazy bitch?
- 8:34Speaker 7: It's I mean, Can I let me just say something, Zach,
- 8:38Speaker 7: You and I watch so much stuff and nothing really
- 8:41Speaker 7: surprises me or faces me. This I'm so pissed off. Yeah,
- 8:46Speaker 7: every fifteen minutes of this.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Anatomy of Lies. It's on Peacock and it's a story
- 8:51Speaker 1: of a Gray's Anatomy writer who turns out is has
- 8:56Speaker 1: been lying about having cancer for over a decade, and
- 9:00Speaker 1: she she does all these insane lies in her life
- 9:04Speaker 1: and basically steals people's stories and then puts them in
- 9:07Speaker 1: and make them, puts them into Gray's Anatomy episodes and
- 9:11Speaker 1: says that they happen to her, and they get crazier
- 9:15Speaker 1: and crazier and crazier, and then they finally catch her
- 9:18Speaker 1: when this woman whose life I.
- 9:20Speaker 6: Haven't finished, I haven't finished.
- 9:24Speaker 3: It was an insane man into the second.
- 9:27Speaker 6: I know, but I don't like to I don't like
- 9:28Speaker 6: to waste it.
- 9:29Speaker 3: All to him.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Okay, Jesus, it was this insane Vanity Fair article and
- 9:37Speaker 1: then I guess Vanity Fair then turned it into a documentary.
- 9:40Speaker 1: So it's it's it's it's only three episodes. Audience, you
- 9:44Speaker 1: got to see this. It makes you scared to talk
- 9:47Speaker 1: to humans. But you don't know.
- 9:50Speaker 6: First of all, not that I don't want to ruin it.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I don't spoil it for people.
- 9:54Speaker 7: Well, I got to say this one thing. How fucked
- 9:57Speaker 7: up again? I've only got through one episode. How fucked
- 10:01Speaker 7: up was it when that co writer confided in her
- 10:04Speaker 7: and about her yeah story, Well.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Don't tell everyone. Yeah, her co writer, her co writer
- 10:10Speaker 1: confides in her something else, Her co writer at Gray's
- 10:14Speaker 1: Anatomy confides in her this tragedy that happened to her,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and then she basically takes the story and puts it
- 10:22Speaker 1: into her own episode and acts like, well, not that
- 10:27Speaker 1: exact story, but basically just acts like she came up
- 10:30Speaker 1: with it. Well, and it was her coworker's private story.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I don't know it cants crazier and crazy and crazier
- 10:36Speaker 1: by the way, you think you've seen crazy, you've only
- 10:38Speaker 1: seen episode one.
- 10:39Speaker 7: I know, and you want to know something, Zach not
- 10:41Speaker 7: to make this not to sidetrack, but this shit.
- 10:45Speaker 6: People are like this. I'm not going to name any names,
- 10:47Speaker 6: but I had a friend, co worker or whatever that
- 10:51Speaker 6: took one of my childhood stories and turned around and
- 10:54Speaker 6: told it on a talk show like it was her
- 10:57Speaker 6: own childhood story.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Oh my god, I'm just scared of these people who
- 11:01Speaker 1: like live for for just I guess she was lying
- 11:05Speaker 1: for attention or something.
- 11:06Speaker 7: No, they create their own reality. It even goes back
- 11:08Speaker 7: to when she wrote the play in high school. Her
- 11:10Speaker 7: parents show up to watch this play and the mom's
- 11:13Speaker 7: like crying her eyes out because she's like, what the hell, Yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 7: could never happened.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I know somebody else. I know someone else who
- 11:21Speaker 1: was dating someone jokes, sorry, I know someone who was
- 11:25Speaker 1: dating someone. And and you know you, I think you
- 11:30Speaker 1: know this this story too. But the whole his whole
- 11:34Speaker 1: fucking life was a lie. Everything he said was a lie. Everything,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and and and she couldn't she she couldn't fathom that
- 11:44Speaker 1: she had been living with this guy. And it's one
- 11:47Speaker 1: of those things where all of a sudden she starts
- 11:48Speaker 1: googling and then fucking this comes in, and this comes in,
- 11:51Speaker 1: and this, that's that's what happens to the to the
- 11:53Speaker 1: wife in this story is all of a sudden, she
- 11:55Speaker 1: starts going down a rabbit hole on Google and Twitter
- 11:58Speaker 1: and Facebook and starts like putting the pieces together, like
- 12:01Speaker 1: like like that movie The Usual Suspects. Yeah, and all
- 12:04Speaker 1: of a sudden, she's like everything she's ever said is
- 12:07Speaker 1: a fucking lie. It's insane, so scary, it's scary. I
- 12:11Speaker 1: was texting with Casey last night. She's like, I'm glad
- 12:13Speaker 1: I'm married and not out there dating. I'm like, I'm
- 12:16Speaker 1: just kidding.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Stay married forever.
- 12:21Speaker 6: Seriously, all right, put your.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Husband back on. We gotta get them on there, all right,
- 12:27Speaker 1: we gotta get going.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Okay, okay, one of the crazies.
- 12:30Speaker 7: I am crazy for what? Crazy?
- 12:32Speaker 6: Amazing?
- 12:33Speaker 1: Yeah? You married? Well, dude, you're so lucky. You're so lucky.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Hey, this is on TV.
- 12:41Speaker 1: This Why did she show I didn't see it.
- 12:43Speaker 3: I'm glad she showed her nipples and everything. She shook
- 12:48Speaker 3: her titties in the camera.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Audience, You're so lucky. We're not blurring that. I'll send
- 12:52Speaker 1: you the video.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Yeah, this podcast, she said, we need to fall back
- 12:58Speaker 3: off the podcast.
- 13:00Speaker 1: The fallback that she becomes fans.
- 13:02Speaker 3: I guess she's only fans.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Would you be okay? If money were tight, if Casey
- 13:07Speaker 1: started only fansing what she's.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Showing everything, is it?
- 13:14Speaker 1: Well, you can be the you can be the man though.
- 13:17Speaker 3: But I know, but then everybody knows would know it's me.
- 13:20Speaker 1: No, we can blur out your peep.
- 13:23Speaker 3: You blur out my peep. What it's not only fans
- 13:28Speaker 3: if my peep's.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Blurred, Okay, I don't know. I saw the face. I
- 13:33Speaker 1: saw this woman on Instagram and she was dancing in
- 13:36Speaker 1: a house and she's like, I can't believe men pay
- 13:41Speaker 1: me ten dollars a month and now now I have
- 13:45Speaker 1: this house.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Yeah, that's how it works.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Good for her.
- 13:51Speaker 3: It's what are you willing to do? You know what
- 13:53Speaker 3: I mean? And what are?
- 13:54Speaker 2: And what is?
- 13:54Speaker 4: And what is and what is? How far is taboo
- 13:58Speaker 4: for you? Is too far for you?
- 14:01Speaker 1: Well, I'm not going to show peep. My only fans
- 14:04Speaker 1: would be like me just catching like, oh, you.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Ain't making no money? Then you want to see me?
- 14:10Speaker 1: Do you want to see me? Just catch be like
- 14:12Speaker 1: oh I got I got fucking my sore throat and
- 14:16Speaker 1: I got my tennis elbow. Everybody would be like this,
- 14:21Speaker 1: I wouldn't make month I.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Paid money for this ship.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I can show me that dick if you go on
- 14:28Speaker 1: only Fans and you're not showing nudity. I know people do,
- 14:33Speaker 1: but like sort of misleading.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Right yeah, I mean it's what look only Fans was
- 14:40Speaker 4: made so that you know what this Maybe this is
- 14:43Speaker 4: how I raised money for my stop motion short. Maybe
- 14:45Speaker 4: I just go and show my dick a couple of times,
- 14:48Speaker 4: you know what I mean?
- 14:49Speaker 1: Maybe that's I don't know how much you'd make, but
- 14:51Speaker 1: I would definitely i'd subscribe.
- 14:54Speaker 3: So does that How is that how it works?
- 14:56Speaker 1: You need to have subscribe for a month, and then
- 14:59Speaker 1: there's special features you got to pay extra for. So
- 15:02Speaker 1: if I subscribe, you might just be like doing like
- 15:05Speaker 1: like a turnaround looking at me like Nautalie but home
- 15:09Speaker 1: like no, no, no, no, no no no, that's just like
- 15:11Speaker 1: this is just like baseline stuff. You're just like giving
- 15:13Speaker 1: me some flirty smiles. You're not showing the shafts for
- 15:17Speaker 1: just a subscription. Then then you come on and you're like, hey,
- 15:23Speaker 1: want to see my balls twenty bucks And then I'm like, yeah,
- 15:27Speaker 1: I want to see them balls, so I paid.
- 15:32Speaker 3: That's how it works, Yeah, listen, I'm not gonna show
- 15:35Speaker 3: my balls until I get to two thousand dollars.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I don't think that's the way it works. I think
- 15:41Speaker 1: you say, like, you know, for twenty bucks, i'll show
- 15:43Speaker 1: one ball. For forty bucks, you'll see two balls. So
- 15:47Speaker 1: but for one hundred bucks, I'll stick this fucking lightsaber.
- 15:51Speaker 3: In me, am in me.
- 15:52Speaker 8: Really well, people are going to want you to perform.
- 15:56Speaker 8: You can't just do nothing, can I Wow? I could
- 16:02Speaker 8: be This could be a decent way for you to
- 16:04Speaker 8: fund motion movie.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Though. It could be a decent when your acting career
- 16:08Speaker 1: and certainly would suck up our T mobile campaign.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Definitely. I think would lose both.
- 16:13Speaker 1: But but you'd have to choose. You can have both.
- 16:18Speaker 3: The money. I think about the money, Zach.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think you're gonna make that much. I
- 16:23Speaker 1: think it's a niche mark you dude.
- 16:26Speaker 3: My ass is fucking beautiful, and I'm sure it's beautiful.
- 16:30Speaker 1: A lot of a lot of you don't know.
- 16:32Speaker 3: What the people. How do people feel about it.
- 16:35Speaker 1: I'm sure there's a lot of gay men that would
- 16:37Speaker 1: be intrigued, and straight women. I don't know how many
- 16:41Speaker 1: straight women want to see your balls for money? But
- 16:43Speaker 1: maybe I can. Dannel, what are your thoughts?
- 16:47Speaker 3: Survey says money, women out there, survey. Let's do a survey, Carmen.
- 16:56Speaker 5: There's car people. I'm sure there's plenty of people who
- 17:01Speaker 5: would want to see Donald's balls.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Yeah, he's saying there's no women that want to see I'm.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Sure some they'd be women.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Are people? I'm sure he is no, no, no, he
- 17:09Speaker 3: said no women.
- 17:11Speaker 1: I'm sure they're saying there are women.
- 17:12Speaker 3: I'm sure he said, be like men would want to
- 17:15Speaker 3: see balls.
- 17:16Speaker 1: I'm sure there are women as well. Yeah, but Daniel,
- 17:18Speaker 1: do you think the biggest percentage of the of the
- 17:20Speaker 1: pie chart would be would be gay men?
- 17:23Speaker 5: I think the biggest pichart would be a straight scrubs
- 17:26Speaker 5: fans man.
- 17:35Speaker 1: That's true, That's probably true, and I'm one of them.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Is Michael you're here? Yes he is.
- 17:46Speaker 3: I'm not sure.
- 17:47Speaker 1: We made about a bunch of said he's a stormy.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:08Speaker 9: Yeah, well hell well, hello, Hi, you got my wife.
- 18:19Speaker 4: The first thing she said to me, make sure you
- 18:22Speaker 4: tell Michael. I said hello, because I guess I was inebriated.
- 18:26Speaker 3: I don't know if you remember, but I guess we
- 18:28Speaker 3: spoke a lot at Christmas birthday party. We had like
- 18:31Speaker 3: deep commo maybe you two did, and I was just
- 18:34Speaker 3: standing there like this.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I think I we did talk a little bit, and
- 18:41Speaker 2: I definitely talk to your wife more, but I sort
- 18:44Speaker 2: of irish goodbye right after that.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Michael Urie, I'm so excited you're here.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 18:52Speaker 1: I I have to confess to you something I didn't
- 18:56Speaker 1: watch Ugly Betty. I didn't know how fucking funny you
- 19:01Speaker 1: were until I met you on the set of Shrinking,
- 19:05Speaker 1: and I think you are so fucking hilarious and talented.
- 19:10Speaker 1: That is your introduction to the show.
- 19:14Speaker 2: That means a lot. Thank you. I didn't expect you
- 19:15Speaker 2: to watch Ugly Betty. You're a straight guy?
- 19:18Speaker 1: Really? Is that?
- 19:20Speaker 3: Betty was Ugly Betty for the ladies and the gays?
- 19:24Speaker 2: I guess I would get all the time when that
- 19:26Speaker 2: show was on. I would get the only straight people
- 19:28Speaker 2: that would come up to me would say, my wife
- 19:30Speaker 2: loves you or my daughter loves you. Now, straight guys
- 19:33Speaker 2: come up to me all the time because of Shrinking.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Straight guys love you now because you're like the dream
- 19:37Speaker 1: gay best friend like I have with Donald. Wait, so
- 19:46Speaker 1: what was Ugly better? Just take us back? What was
- 19:48Speaker 1: uly ugly Betty was your big break? I take it right.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Oh yeah, let's go back before that.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Okay, Donald, go back, Let's start at the very We
- 19:58Speaker 1: finally have someone who appreciate It's musicals as much as
- 20:01Speaker 1: we do on the show. Donald, I'll get every reference
- 20:04Speaker 1: you'll get, He'll get every reference.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Bring them.
- 20:07Speaker 4: Oh yeah, well what about this one?
- 20:15Speaker 2: What was that bringing the noise, bringing the funk?
- 20:19Speaker 3: Holy?
- 20:21Speaker 2: Holy?
- 20:26Speaker 1: Was that? Actually? Was that actually a piece of tap?
- 20:29Speaker 1: From bringing the noise?
- 20:30Speaker 3: I was trying to imitate a piece of tap.
- 20:34Speaker 1: In my world, it was like actually accurate tap. And
- 20:39Speaker 1: Michael was like, oh, yeah, that's in the second act.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Oh that's so I got arrested. I got arrested for
- 20:49Speaker 2: smoking pot in the street once and uh, that's a
- 20:53Speaker 2: long story, but the punchline was that my friend I
- 20:57Speaker 2: got arrested with a friend who who was working at
- 21:01Speaker 2: the Public Theater, and they ended up getting us out.
- 21:04Speaker 2: The Public Theater ended up getting us out much faster
- 21:07Speaker 2: than we would have. And when they went to thank
- 21:10Speaker 2: George C. Wolf and everybody at the Public for getting
- 21:13Speaker 2: us out, they said, yeah, we had Savion Glover here,
- 21:16Speaker 2: so we're used to Oh my.
- 21:17Speaker 3: God, yo, dude, who listen, this isn't and this isn't
- 21:22Speaker 3: this isn't news or anything like that. The audience, you
- 21:25Speaker 3: could they were smoking so much in that theater, and
- 21:27Speaker 3: this theater is like at the bottom of a hotel
- 21:30Speaker 3: or a big ass building. They were smoking so much
- 21:33Speaker 3: weed in the dressing room when they were doing Noise
- 21:35Speaker 3: Funk that the audience could smell that shit in the
- 21:39Speaker 3: fucking auditorium. That's how much weed they were smoking before
- 21:43Speaker 3: the show. Like my mom.
- 21:44Speaker 4: I remember, my mom said, I went and saw Noise
- 21:46Speaker 4: Funk last night, and let me tell you something.
- 21:49Speaker 3: It was in there, I meaning.
- 21:51Speaker 2: The weed, Like that's what happens that month upon a
- 21:55Speaker 2: mattress too.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Yeah, Michael, did you used to go see what was
- 21:58Speaker 1: your introduction to so Theater in Broadway? Did you used
- 22:01Speaker 1: to go see the shows as a kid.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Well, I'm from Texas, so I would see the tours
- 22:06Speaker 2: in Dallas. I didn't come to New York until I
- 22:08Speaker 2: was I guess I was seventeen. Right after I graduated
- 22:12Speaker 2: high school. I came on a school trip like with
- 22:14Speaker 2: my soon to be community college. But we would go
- 22:17Speaker 2: to the big, big music hall at fair Fair Park
- 22:23Speaker 2: in Dallas. Which is the big State Fair and and
- 22:28Speaker 2: it was. It was the tour like so we'd see
- 22:29Speaker 2: like the tour of Phantom and Cats and Le Miz.
- 22:31Speaker 2: But occasionallyy would send in like some big some stars
- 22:35Speaker 2: like Jerry Lewis came through and Dann Yankees and Tommy
- 22:40Speaker 2: Toon came through in a show called Busker Rally that
- 22:42Speaker 2: ended up not coming to Broadway, but it was so
- 22:45Speaker 2: exciting to see Tommy Tooon. And then they brought in
- 22:51Speaker 2: Ralph Maccio and had to succeed in business without really trying.
- 22:54Speaker 3: That's awesome and it was so good.
- 22:57Speaker 2: He was playing the Matthew Broaderick part, and and uh
- 23:02Speaker 2: and Roger Bart, who is now a big Broadway start.
- 23:05Speaker 2: He's in Back to the Future now and he's been
- 23:07Speaker 2: in a million things. He was playing the villain Bud Frump.
- 23:10Speaker 2: And I remember seeing that show and being completely blown
- 23:13Speaker 2: away and thinking that I want that part. I want
- 23:17Speaker 2: Bud Frump because he was Roger Bart was so good
- 23:19Speaker 2: and it was and I'm not not really a singer,
- 23:22Speaker 2: and I could I could sing that, I could do that,
- 23:25Speaker 2: and I ended up getting to do that. Was the
- 23:27Speaker 2: first Broadway show I ever did. Was how to succeed
- 23:29Speaker 2: in playing that role. So I sort of like like,
- 23:31Speaker 2: chase that all the way amazing?
- 23:34Speaker 3: So wait when you got it?
- 23:36Speaker 4: You know how that is when you get it, doesn't
- 23:38Speaker 4: it feel like it's gratifying to finally get to that
- 23:42Speaker 4: point because like you got there. But then afterwards, when
- 23:47Speaker 4: after you were done, was it like all right, now
- 23:49Speaker 4: what do I do?
- 23:49Speaker 3: What's next? What's gonna be what's going to be next?
- 23:51Speaker 3: For me?
- 23:52Speaker 2: It is weird when you have like a dream like
- 23:54Speaker 2: that and it comes true, like like, how do you
- 23:59Speaker 2: I was just thinking about this, about this idea of
- 24:03Speaker 2: like dream roles or or like you know, having these
- 24:06Speaker 2: because because we do, what we do is something we
- 24:09Speaker 2: like and like our work is also our love like
- 24:13Speaker 2: and so it's this this sort of trap where you
- 24:18Speaker 2: fall in love with something and saying, oh, I want that,
- 24:19Speaker 2: I want to do that, I want to be I
- 24:20Speaker 2: want to be in that, or I want to play
- 24:21Speaker 2: that part, and if it doesn't come doesn't come to you,
- 24:25Speaker 2: it doesn't happen. It's so sad, so much sadder than
- 24:29Speaker 2: if it's a role that you don't really care about
- 24:30Speaker 2: or a job that you don't really care about. And
- 24:33Speaker 2: I was so lucky to have that. But I also
- 24:36Speaker 2: when I got So this is a crazy story. Actually
- 24:38Speaker 2: I ended up getting to do that show on Broadway,
- 24:40Speaker 2: and it was my Broadway debut. But I was supposed
- 24:42Speaker 2: to open it. It was a revival with Daniel Radcliffe
- 24:46Speaker 2: playing the lead, and I was supposed to be in
- 24:48Speaker 2: it from the beginning. And uh, for like six months
- 24:52Speaker 2: I had this part. I'd done the workshop and I
- 24:55Speaker 2: chased it and I got it, and and for six
- 24:58Speaker 2: months I had this part. And then all of a sudden,
- 25:00Speaker 2: they said one of the rights holders wasn't there that day,
- 25:04Speaker 2: and you have to come and re audition.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 25:06Speaker 2: So it's like some so like so somebody's somebody's you
- 25:09Speaker 2: know son who wrote the show. You know that their
- 25:12Speaker 2: parents wrote the show. They suddenly decided they needed to
- 25:15Speaker 2: weigh in, and I lost the job.
- 25:17Speaker 3: No what Yeah, And.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I the director and all the producers and everybody wants you,
- 25:22Speaker 1: and you've done the workshop and you're yeah, and you're
- 25:25Speaker 1: set to go. And then one of the children of
- 25:27Speaker 1: the rights holders says note about you.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Yeah, said no to me, And so I lost the job.
- 25:33Speaker 2: And it was devastating. I found out I was getting
- 25:35Speaker 2: on a plane to go to the UK and do
- 25:39Speaker 2: this a little movie and like the Fringe Festival. I
- 25:42Speaker 2: had this whole cool like UK summer planned, and then
- 25:45Speaker 2: I was going to get back and go into rehearsal
- 25:47Speaker 2: for my Broadway debut. And suddenly it was like it
- 25:50Speaker 2: was taken from me. But guess who it was. It's
- 25:55Speaker 2: so so the guy who wrote the people who wrote
- 25:58Speaker 2: How to Succeed a Business are Frank Lesser and Abe Burrows,
- 26:02Speaker 2: and Frank Lesser's widow, Joe Lesser, had approved me. But
- 26:07Speaker 2: a Burrow's son is James.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Burrows, the famous sitcom director.
- 26:15Speaker 2: The famous sick the guy who Burrows Jimmy Burrows, the
- 26:18Speaker 2: guy who directed Cheers as Friends, all Friends and Will
- 26:23Speaker 2: and Grace and Fraser and all the great stuff, all
- 26:25Speaker 2: the greats.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Wow, he's the guy.
- 26:28Speaker 1: He Yeah, So that must have been a mind fuck
- 26:30Speaker 1: for you. It wasn't it Like, it wasn't just like
- 26:32Speaker 1: somebody's kid. It was a famous director.
- 26:35Speaker 2: It was like a yeah, like a name I had
- 26:37Speaker 2: seen over and over and over again my entire life,
- 26:40Speaker 2: and somebody I had aspired to work for. And it
- 26:43Speaker 2: was really really hard and really devastating.
- 26:45Speaker 1: How did you get over that. I mean, we must
- 26:47Speaker 1: be hurtling. Yeah, that's hurting my heart as a fellow
- 26:51Speaker 1: actor right now.
- 26:52Speaker 2: It was really hard. In fact, there's a there's a
- 26:54Speaker 2: shoe sign shoe shine stand in JFK that I sat
- 26:59Speaker 2: in and cried when I found out because I was
- 27:01Speaker 2: on my way to the UK, and I sat in
- 27:03Speaker 2: the shoeshine stand and cried. And I still see it
- 27:06Speaker 2: from time to time when I met JFK and I think,
- 27:07Speaker 2: oh my gosh, that's where so yeah, where it is again, dude.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Began I drive by the Ralphs where I would buy
- 27:17Speaker 1: the foot long sandwiches for lunch and dinner, and I go,
- 27:23Speaker 1: I remember you, Ralphs.
- 27:25Speaker 3: I bet you that foot long don't hit like it
- 27:27Speaker 3: used to. Though, bro, I.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Don't eat them rous foot longs anymore.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Donald, like they don't hit like they used to.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Jimmy Burrows wishes you could hire Michael Uri now.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Donald, Jimmy Burrows is like Jimmy Burrows is like this
- 27:40Speaker 3: motherfucker went from like, hold up, you got a story.
- 27:43Speaker 3: So I'm gonna let you say, well, well, I ended
- 27:47Speaker 3: up working with Jimmy.
- 27:48Speaker 2: I got a job that Jimmy was doing I got
- 27:51Speaker 2: a series that Jimmy directed, and and I didn't bring
- 27:54Speaker 2: it up. I never brought it up. He knew I
- 27:57Speaker 2: was in the show because I so. Anyway, later later,
- 28:00Speaker 2: and how did you venture the show? The show ran
- 28:01Speaker 2: for a year, this this great guy named Christopher Hankey,
- 28:06Speaker 2: and it wasn't like it was between us. It was
- 28:08Speaker 2: I was mine to lose, and I lost it. And
- 28:10Speaker 2: then they went back and found this great actor, Christopher Hanky,
- 28:13Speaker 2: and he did it with Daniel Radcliffe. They did it
- 28:15Speaker 2: for a year and then they decided to keep it
- 28:17Speaker 2: going with some new actors. Nick Jonas and bow Bridges
- 28:21Speaker 2: came in and they said, you're You're, You're, You're, You're in.
- 28:24Speaker 2: And I was like, what about what about Jimmy Burrows
- 28:25Speaker 2: And they're like, we don't care, We're not even asking
- 28:27Speaker 2: him this time. And I got to do it and
- 28:29Speaker 2: it was my Broadway debut and it was an amazing experience.
- 28:31Speaker 2: It was it was fabulous.
- 28:32Speaker 3: And while I was.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Doing it, I got a pilot for Max Muchnik and
- 28:38Speaker 2: David Cohen and it was directed by Jimmy Burrows. And
- 28:41Speaker 2: I got the audition and I was like, guys, why
- 28:43Speaker 2: I can't audition for this. Jimmy Burrows hates me. I
- 28:46Speaker 2: can prove it. He hates me. And I lost this
- 28:48Speaker 2: job and they said no, no, no, just go, just go
- 28:50Speaker 2: just audition, and I got it and I was too
- 28:53Speaker 2: scared to mention it to him. I never mentioned it
- 28:55Speaker 2: to him, but he knew I was in the show
- 28:57Speaker 2: and he asked me about it. So we talked about
- 29:00Speaker 2: the show, and he talked about like the history of
- 29:02Speaker 2: the show, but he never brought up that awkward.
- 29:05Speaker 1: I mean, I understand I wouldn't have brought it up either.
- 29:08Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I mean, yeah, what are you going to say? Yeah,
- 29:12Speaker 3: you fired me, bro.
- 29:15Speaker 1: I say, you made me cry in a JFK sh shinebox.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll show you next time we're there.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Hey, Jimmy, go get you shinebox.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:25Speaker 2: But I love Jimmy. I mean I loved him so much.
- 29:27Speaker 2: I had I had the best time.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I don't love Jimmy. Jimmy came to visit the Scrub set.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Do you remember that Donald?
- 29:32Speaker 3: Oh no, I don't remember.
- 29:35Speaker 1: He is his kids, and I assume he loved it,
- 29:38Speaker 1: and uh, And they came and had a tour one
- 29:41Speaker 1: day and we were all like, oh my god, it's
- 29:42Speaker 1: Jimmy Burrows.
- 29:43Speaker 4: You know, the only time I've ever gotten fired from
- 29:46Speaker 4: something was Will and Grace and freaking he was directed,
- 29:50Speaker 4: my god, and that's the one time I ever got fired.
- 29:53Speaker 4: I didn't even make I got to the table read
- 29:56Speaker 4: and then to the first day of rehearsal, and by
- 29:59Speaker 4: the end the first day of rehearsal, I was out
- 30:02Speaker 4: of there.
- 30:02Speaker 1: I was doing what were you doing? You did they
- 30:04Speaker 1: tell you what they didn't like about you? What you're doing?
- 30:07Speaker 3: No, they didn't say anything. I just got fired.
- 30:08Speaker 4: I didn't even I was supposed to be the love
- 30:11Speaker 4: interest with Deborah Messing and she was never even on
- 30:14Speaker 4: set with me, so I never even had to We've
- 30:18Speaker 4: never even had the opportunity to create any type of
- 30:20Speaker 4: chemistry or anything.
- 30:21Speaker 1: And when you saw Doulay Hill do it, how did
- 30:23Speaker 1: you feel that?
- 30:25Speaker 3: Well, you know it was Donald Glover who got No.
- 30:28Speaker 3: Was it to lay Hill? I don't know. At that point.
- 30:31Speaker 3: At that point, I was like, oh, well, fuck Will
- 30:32Speaker 3: and Grace, then don't I'll never watch this show ever again.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Dude, we have we have a gay guest. Please don't
- 30:38Speaker 1: say you can't say Willing Grace around me.
- 30:42Speaker 3: I'm sorry, let's take a break.
- 30:44Speaker 1: We'll be right back after these fine words. Michael, you
- 30:54Speaker 1: went to Juilliard. Correct, that's real, Like, that's not that's
- 30:59Speaker 1: not a typo. You went to Juilliard?
- 31:00Speaker 3: No, okay, now let me ask you a question.
- 31:03Speaker 1: How come I can't fucking finish my question because I
- 31:06Speaker 1: was a question. Let me tell you how I do
- 31:08Speaker 1: my interviewing a statement and he acknowledges it, and then
- 31:12Speaker 1: I go in for a question.
- 31:13Speaker 3: Okay, for your question. I thought that was your question
- 31:16Speaker 3: because I was starting in the paragraph I was. You
- 31:19Speaker 3: said that you went to Juilliard, and then he said, yeah,
- 31:21Speaker 3: I went to Juilliard.
- 31:23Speaker 1: I'm going to say something now I don't know. Go ahead, dickhead, Michael,
- 31:29Speaker 1: you went to Julie was the What was that like?
- 31:37Speaker 1: And did you enjoy your experience? Do you feel it's
- 31:40Speaker 1: contributed to you being so successful as you are?
- 31:43Speaker 2: Well, I had a really good experience. Not everyone does,
- 31:47Speaker 2: but I had a really, really good It was really
- 31:49Speaker 2: right for me. The age that I was, I was
- 31:54Speaker 2: a sponge and just wanted all the information and all
- 31:58Speaker 2: the to learn every thing. And I was I was
- 32:01Speaker 2: encouraged to audition by somebody. I was going to this
- 32:03Speaker 2: community college. And I was perfectly happy that I had
- 32:05Speaker 2: shitty grades in school and and I didn't think I
- 32:07Speaker 2: had what it takes to be an actor. So I
- 32:09Speaker 2: was in this community college, still trying to figure it out,
- 32:12Speaker 2: and somebody said you should audition for Julliard and I
- 32:15Speaker 2: was like really, and they were serious. They were like, no,
- 32:16Speaker 2: you really should. That place is for you. And so
- 32:22Speaker 2: I did. I That's the only school I auditioned for for,
- 32:26Speaker 2: you know, like Conservative training, Conservatory training, Conservative Training, That's
- 32:32Speaker 2: where I learned how to be a conservative. No Conservatory Training.
- 32:36Speaker 2: I didn't go audition anywhere else. And I got in.
- 32:41Speaker 2: I mean I auditioned and I got in. And then
- 32:42Speaker 2: suddenly I had to move to New York and and
- 32:45Speaker 2: get a bunch of student loans and figure out how
- 32:49Speaker 2: to be a New Yorker. And but the second I
- 32:52Speaker 2: stepped foot in New York, I felt like I was
- 32:54Speaker 2: at home. It was like this is this is where
- 32:56Speaker 2: I belong and and and and the school was is
- 33:00Speaker 2: exactly what I wanted. It was very rigorous. You're you're
- 33:04Speaker 2: in class all day and night, and you I lived
- 33:08Speaker 2: at the dorm the first year, and I lived nearby
- 33:10Speaker 2: the other years. And you become like a family.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Your your your.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Classmates, and you become like a family, and you do
- 33:17Speaker 2: everything together. You eat and and and study and rehearse
- 33:22Speaker 2: and take class together, and uh, it was great.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Was it very competitive? Did you when you were there,
- 33:30Speaker 1: did you feel like, oh my god, some of these
- 33:32Speaker 1: people are fucking brilliant and I'm and I'm and I
- 33:35Speaker 1: I aspire to be that good or did you feel like, wow,
- 33:39Speaker 1: I think i'm I respect my peers, but I think
- 33:42Speaker 1: I might be pretty good. What was your what was
- 33:44Speaker 1: your heads?
- 33:45Speaker 2: Interesting? That's an interesting question because it's it's not actually
- 33:48Speaker 2: competitive when you're there, and because you don't audition once
- 33:51Speaker 2: you're there. Once you're there, they give you the parts
- 33:54Speaker 2: and and and you just get placed and things, so
- 33:56Speaker 2: that it's pretty well, it's pretty even. Everybody kind of
- 33:59Speaker 2: has a lot to do. And then at the end,
- 34:02Speaker 2: in the fourth year, it starts to like when agents
- 34:05Speaker 2: start to come and you know, people get jobs and stuff,
- 34:08Speaker 2: it starts to get a little bit weird. But I
- 34:11Speaker 2: definitely there were I definitely thought I didn't think I
- 34:15Speaker 2: was among the best, but I but I thought I
- 34:19Speaker 2: I thought I got why I was there. I was
- 34:21Speaker 2: like oh, I see, I see why I'm part of
- 34:24Speaker 2: this group because it's not it's not necessarily how do
- 34:28Speaker 2: I say this delicately, It's not like the best actors
- 34:31Speaker 2: in the world. It's the actors that fit the Juilliard
- 34:35Speaker 2: training and that that could be good theater actors and
- 34:39Speaker 2: could be viable theater actors. So like occasionally a movie
- 34:43Speaker 2: star somebody with move Like when I was there, Jessica
- 34:45Speaker 2: ches Dain was in my class, and she was like
- 34:49Speaker 2: pretty clearly a movie star, like we could tell she
- 34:52Speaker 2: was also amazing at theater. She's good at everything. But
- 34:56Speaker 2: then there are other actors that are like, oh, totally
- 34:58Speaker 2: theater actors there. They're meant the theater, they'll build, they
- 35:01Speaker 2: could be in any Shakespeare play and they could do
- 35:03Speaker 2: all that. And while I was there, Oscar Isaac he
- 35:05Speaker 2: was two years behind, two or three years behind me,
- 35:07Speaker 2: And that was when he came. That's when I was like, oh,
- 35:11Speaker 2: that is a movie star. He's like he's got that
- 35:15Speaker 2: star quality. But that's not really what they're about necessarily.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Sometimes they get in, sometimes those kinds of people get in,
- 35:21Speaker 2: but it's really about like making you like a chameleon
- 35:26Speaker 2: in the theater and being able to be able to
- 35:28Speaker 2: do all kinds of different theater.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Check off.
- 35:33Speaker 1: It's more theater based than sort of screen acting.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Yeah, we do very little that they do it more now.
- 35:41Speaker 2: I think when I was there with very little.
- 35:43Speaker 4: You guys are a lot of television. There's a lot
- 35:45Speaker 4: of you guys in television too.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, they've gotten There used to be a thing
- 35:50Speaker 2: when you got out of Juilliard where everyone in the
- 35:53Speaker 2: business poo pooed you. They said, you're gonna need three
- 35:55Speaker 2: years to get rid of the Juilliard thing before you're
- 35:57Speaker 2: a real actor, and it is, and I think now
- 36:01Speaker 2: it's a little bit different. I think they're better about
- 36:03Speaker 2: giving you classes. In fact, you know, at the end
- 36:05Speaker 2: of school there's like a showcase where you do you
- 36:08Speaker 2: do scenes for agents and managers and stuff, And up
- 36:11Speaker 2: until my class, they only did them in New York.
- 36:14Speaker 2: And then Jessica Chastain lobbied the school to have us
- 36:19Speaker 2: do our showcase in LA and we were the first
- 36:21Speaker 2: class to do that.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Wow.
- 36:23Speaker 2: And so we all got LA agents too, and met
- 36:27Speaker 2: LA casting directors and ever since then they all do that.
- 36:31Speaker 2: So I think the school has evolved some. But when
- 36:33Speaker 2: I was there, it was really like about about doing theater,
- 36:36Speaker 2: about going you know, like trying to be in regional theater,
- 36:40Speaker 2: doing Shakespeare, doing Chekhov, things like that.
- 36:43Speaker 3: So that's why all Juilliard graduates when you ask them, yo,
- 36:51Speaker 3: so what school did you go to? And they go Juilliard,
- 36:53Speaker 3: the response is so hesitant. It's always the hesitant. What
- 36:58Speaker 3: kind of person you're going to be an ad about this?
- 37:00Speaker 3: Are you're gonna be or you're gonna be cool about it?
- 37:03Speaker 1: Wait, what do you mean? Because you think donald, because
- 37:05Speaker 1: you think what do you mean?
- 37:06Speaker 3: I understand, well, Julliard is such a prestigious school for actors,
- 37:11Speaker 3: you know what I mean. And so when you meet
- 37:13Speaker 3: someone that went to Juilliard, it's like, oh shit, you
- 37:16Speaker 3: were able to get first of all, all of us
- 37:18Speaker 3: auditioned for Juilliard. If you really fucking let's keep it
- 37:20Speaker 3: one hundred. I didn't really Well, most people I know
- 37:24Speaker 3: that were into acting, they auditioned for Juilliard and didn't
- 37:27Speaker 3: get in and then didn't say anything to anybody else
- 37:30Speaker 3: about it. For that shit, I didn't get in, I'll
- 37:32Speaker 3: keep it to myself. It's like motherfucker's audition for the
- 37:35Speaker 3: Mickey Mouse Club didn't get in and didn't tell anybody
- 37:38Speaker 3: I auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club too. You know
- 37:40Speaker 3: what I'm saying.
- 37:41Speaker 4: But when you meet when you meet people that went
- 37:45Speaker 4: like when I meet somebody that went to Juilliard, the
- 37:47Speaker 4: first thing I think of is do you think you're better.
- 37:50Speaker 3: Than me because you went to Juilliard? Or are you
- 37:52Speaker 3: fucking an actor who's out here trying to make it
- 37:54Speaker 3: happen like everybody else. That's the first thing, right.
- 37:57Speaker 4: The second thing I think is, is my response gonna
- 38:00Speaker 4: turn you off so much that you're you're now freaking
- 38:04Speaker 4: you you have your guard up against me because you're
- 38:06Speaker 4: afraid of how I'm going to respond to the prestigious
- 38:10Speaker 4: school that you went to.
- 38:12Speaker 3: And so you know what I mean.
- 38:14Speaker 2: That's kind of the way that ladder. The ladder is
- 38:16Speaker 2: kind of how I always feel. I always feel a
- 38:18Speaker 2: little bit embarrassed to say that I went to Juilliard
- 38:21Speaker 2: because it's it's like you know, it is, it is prestigious.
- 38:26Speaker 2: It was amazing. It did set me up for so much.
- 38:29Speaker 2: But like a lot of the people that I went
- 38:31Speaker 2: to school with left the business, like a lot of
- 38:33Speaker 2: people don't don't make it even at Juilliard and and
- 38:38Speaker 2: you know or or like. The tricky thing about Jilliard
- 38:41Speaker 2: is like, because it's Juilliard, people don't People often don't pivot.
- 38:46Speaker 2: And I think, you know, I think there's so many
- 38:48Speaker 2: ways you can be in this business besides being on
- 38:51Speaker 2: screen or on stage. And I think that if I
- 38:54Speaker 2: hadn't made it as an actor, I would have pivoted.
- 38:56Speaker 2: I would have done something else. I would have become
- 38:58Speaker 2: a you know, like you know, a producer.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Or That's what I was saying about my experience is
- 39:03Speaker 1: that I I just wanted to work in film and
- 39:08Speaker 1: TV and theater, and if I didn't didn't if I
- 39:11Speaker 1: couldn't find a way to make a living as an actor,
- 39:13Speaker 1: I was going to do some other job in production,
- 39:16Speaker 1: on set, backstage something. I just like being in the
- 39:19Speaker 1: space of it all.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I mean. Yeah, I think I
- 39:23Speaker 2: think some people from Juliard they think, gosh, I should
- 39:25Speaker 2: be an actor because I went to Julliard, and I
- 39:27Speaker 2: can't do anything else.
- 39:28Speaker 4: You can, mind you, it could totally mind fuck you
- 39:31Speaker 4: because of that, because of the press, stage behind it
- 39:34Speaker 4: and stuff.
- 39:34Speaker 3: Do you remember your audition, Donald, I did some bullshit. Yeah,
- 39:37Speaker 3: like I wouldn't do.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Your dance from bringing the noise bringing No, I didn't.
- 39:41Speaker 3: I did so, Look I did. I did so.
- 39:44Speaker 4: When I was a kid, my parents were in this
- 39:47Speaker 4: uh play at the National Black Data called The Ritual
- 39:51Speaker 4: or something like that, and it was based on pretty
- 39:55Speaker 4: much Earth and the people of Earth, right, And there
- 40:00Speaker 4: was a small paragraph in the in the play.
- 40:06Speaker 3: And I would go around and I did it everywhere.
- 40:08Speaker 4: I did it from junior high school all the way
- 40:11Speaker 4: to like I didn't go to college, but for every
- 40:15Speaker 4: audition I went out for, for high school and for college,
- 40:20Speaker 4: I did this audition. It didn't I didn't get much
- 40:22Speaker 4: of it, but it was what if we did not
- 40:23Speaker 4: come from Africa.
- 40:24Speaker 3: But to Africa? Think about that? What if we did
- 40:28Speaker 3: not come from Africa but to Africa? What if a
- 40:31Speaker 3: million years ago? Shit, I forgot it.
- 40:39Speaker 1: We weren't we weren't going to ask you to perform
- 40:41Speaker 1: the model anyway.
- 40:42Speaker 3: It's literally it's there's only like, there's literally only two
- 40:45Speaker 3: more lines to it. What if a million years ago?
- 40:47Speaker 1: That was the whole audition?
- 40:49Speaker 3: Pretty much?
- 40:50Speaker 1: And you should have had me coach you. I mean,
- 40:52Speaker 1: I don't think that's.
- 40:54Speaker 3: It didn't get me into anything.
- 40:56Speaker 1: But Michael Urry's going in there like to be or
- 40:58Speaker 1: not to be, and you're like, what if we come
- 41:00Speaker 1: from earth?
- 41:02Speaker 3: Exactly? Exactly exactly.
- 41:04Speaker 1: It's a brain teaser, right exactly.
- 41:07Speaker 3: And so it worked on some things.
- 41:10Speaker 4: It worked for certain auditions, but they were looking for
- 41:13Speaker 4: substance and stuff.
- 41:14Speaker 3: They were like, motherfucker, come on, be like good.
- 41:17Speaker 1: I bet it worked on this. I bet it worked
- 41:19Speaker 1: on this.
- 41:20Speaker 9: Line.
- 41:22Speaker 1: That's Donald and a Folders commercial.
- 41:23Speaker 3: Michael, it didn't work on that one either.
- 41:26Speaker 2: But did you just do that or did you have
- 41:31Speaker 2: a no?
- 41:32Speaker 3: That was it?
- 41:33Speaker 1: Like?
- 41:33Speaker 3: That was?
- 41:34Speaker 4: That was pretty much it like it's that.
- 41:38Speaker 3: I didn't know. I didn't know any better. It's like
- 41:40Speaker 3: coming out to Los Angeles. If you're not.
- 41:42Speaker 4: Prepared, you you could freaking fall apart here. Like so
- 41:46Speaker 4: you know, Michael, you got on the line, your publicist
- 41:49Speaker 4: was on the line to protect you and stuff like that.
- 41:51Speaker 4: That's a fucking you were prepared for this, for this
- 41:55Speaker 4: podcast today. When I came out to LA I wasn't prepared.
- 41:58Speaker 4: I wasn't prepared for any other ship. Came out here
- 42:00Speaker 4: on a whim. I made some money, Let's fucking.
- 42:03Speaker 3: Go, you know what I mean? I didn't. I didn't
- 42:06Speaker 3: know the business. I didn't know any of that.
- 42:09Speaker 1: So that's how.
- 42:10Speaker 2: It's hard to learn that the business part of acting
- 42:14Speaker 2: is way easier than the business.
- 42:16Speaker 1: That's well said.
- 42:16Speaker 3: I agree, well done, well done.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a hard thing to figure out, this billness.
- 42:20Speaker 1: It's still I still don't understand it.
- 42:22Speaker 3: Yeah, but now we have changing But now we have
- 42:25Speaker 3: people that are in our lives to support us and
- 42:27Speaker 3: stuff like that, and you can always tell oh, you're
- 42:29Speaker 3: not really and and we now have the power in
- 42:33Speaker 3: the autonomy to say to motherfucker shoe, you're not really
- 42:36Speaker 3: for me. You can go I'm gonna find somebody else,
- 42:39Speaker 3: you know what I mean. When you first get out here,
- 42:41Speaker 3: you don't have that type of power.
- 42:42Speaker 4: You don't have that type of control of your career
- 42:44Speaker 4: like that where you can say you know what, fuck
- 42:46Speaker 4: you man, you don't see my vision and then be like,
- 42:49Speaker 4: you know what, You're right, I don't see your vision.
- 42:51Speaker 3: I'm gonna move on to something else. You get kicked
- 42:53Speaker 3: out of the business for shit like that.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree with you, Michael, that acting is when
- 42:58Speaker 1: you finally get a job and you get to acts
- 43:00Speaker 1: of the easiest part. It's navigating all the other Michigans
- 43:03Speaker 1: and uh and bullshit and uh and and and trying
- 43:07Speaker 1: to keep the thing going. That's the hard part.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Yeah, And like auditioning and wanting you know what, Zach,
- 43:16Speaker 2: there is a line reading in Garden State when you
- 43:20Speaker 2: say to George C. Wolf, wait, is it to George?
- 43:22Speaker 2: He's your boss?
- 43:23Speaker 1: And George Wolf, for those who don't know, is a
- 43:26Speaker 1: very very famous theater director. He used to run the
- 43:28Speaker 1: public theater and he's now a film director. And he
- 43:31Speaker 1: gave me the very first part in Macbeth out after
- 43:34Speaker 1: Northwestern at the public show he was directing. And so
- 43:38Speaker 1: when I when I made Garden State, I said, will
- 43:40Speaker 1: you do a cameo as as the as the manager
- 43:43Speaker 1: of the restaurant where I work.
- 43:45Speaker 2: He's so good at that too.
- 43:47Speaker 1: He's the one for those of you're listening and recall,
- 43:49Speaker 1: he's the one who's holding up the headshots of the
- 43:52Speaker 1: people that are going to get my job if I'm late,
- 43:53Speaker 1: And I'm like, what were you going to say?
- 43:56Speaker 2: Though, Well, there's a it's not it's not him, it's
- 43:58Speaker 2: somebody else, asks you what you're up to. I forget
- 44:01Speaker 2: who it is. Maybe it's maybe it's Jackie Hoffman. Somebody,
- 44:04Speaker 2: somebody in your life is like, so, what's going on?
- 44:07Speaker 3: What are you up to?
- 44:07Speaker 2: And you say, you know, auditioning something like that. And
- 44:13Speaker 2: it was the truest thing I had ever seen. I remember,
- 44:17Speaker 2: because I was probably doing that when I saw the movie.
- 44:21Speaker 2: I was probably like, you know, saying that exact thing
- 44:24Speaker 2: to people when they said what are you up to?
- 44:26Speaker 2: And I remember thinking that that is the most authentic
- 44:31Speaker 2: line read and actress ever given.
- 44:33Speaker 1: That was my truth. I was. It was method acting.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:37Speaker 1: But so Michael, when you get out to LA, how
- 44:41Speaker 1: long were you out here before you got Ugly Betty?
- 44:45Speaker 1: How did that come out?
- 44:46Speaker 2: Well? I got Ugly Betty in New York. Actually I
- 44:48Speaker 2: was so I got out of Juilliard and three and
- 44:51Speaker 2: I stayed and I tried to get and I thought,
- 44:53Speaker 2: I thought, oh, I'll be in every I'll be in
- 44:54Speaker 2: every Shakespeare play, and you know that's what I'll do.
- 44:57Speaker 2: I'll go be in regional theaters and do and I
- 44:59Speaker 2: and I was getting it. I got a little bit
- 45:01Speaker 2: of that, but it was like I was doing like
- 45:03Speaker 2: basement stuff and good work, really cool work, but I
- 45:06Speaker 2: was working in I wasn't getting you know, the Shakespeare
- 45:09Speaker 2: parts I thought I was going to get. I wasn't
- 45:11Speaker 2: getting you know, regional theater. I wasn't even getting appointments for.
- 45:14Speaker 3: Stuff like that.
- 45:16Speaker 2: And and I would get a commercial here and there.
- 45:20Speaker 2: And then I was doing a play in a basement,
- 45:22Speaker 2: this really cool Jacobean tragedy called the Revenger's Tragedy, and
- 45:28Speaker 2: I was playing a character that was the version we
- 45:32Speaker 2: were doing. I was playing this very like kind of
- 45:35Speaker 2: evil David Bowie, looking kind of a guy. And this
- 45:40Speaker 2: the great casting director, Will Cantler came and saw me,
- 45:43Speaker 2: and I knew him. He did he I think he'd
- 45:45Speaker 2: cast me in a commercial. And he stopped me in
- 45:47Speaker 2: the lobby afterwards and and said you were great. And
- 45:51Speaker 2: I was like great, okay, and I put you know,
- 45:53Speaker 2: I filed that away. And I was getting the breakdowns
- 45:56Speaker 2: illegally back then, you know, you could like get on
- 45:59Speaker 2: a list or whatever and get the breakdowns. And I
- 46:01Speaker 2: saw that Will Candler was casting this pilot and there
- 46:06Speaker 2: was a one line description for this character, bitchy gay assistant.
- 46:11Speaker 1: And I was like, I can do this.
- 46:14Speaker 2: I can do that. And I told my people, my
- 46:18Speaker 2: you know, my agent, my manager at the time, I
- 46:20Speaker 2: was like, will Candler likes me and I and I
- 46:23Speaker 2: think he just want me to do something kind of
- 46:25Speaker 2: like this, and I bet I could get this appointment.
- 46:27Speaker 2: At that time, I was, I bet I could get
- 46:29Speaker 2: an audition. And and at the time they were they
- 46:33Speaker 2: were like, we don't want you to do this because
- 46:34Speaker 2: it was a co star, you know, like not a
- 46:38Speaker 2: guest star, not a series regular. It was a co star.
- 46:41Speaker 2: And they didn't want me to do it. And what
- 46:43Speaker 2: is the different, Well, co stars like no money and no, no,
- 46:47Speaker 2: you know, it's like a guest star.
- 46:49Speaker 4: You were a co star meeting, you'd be in every episode,
- 46:52Speaker 4: but you weren't gonna get you weren't going to get
- 46:55Speaker 4: paid like a Reich series regular.
- 46:58Speaker 2: No not not, no guarante of every episode, just like
- 47:02Speaker 2: in fact, the idea was that my so I was
- 47:06Speaker 2: Vanessa Williams assistant, and the idea was that she was
- 47:10Speaker 2: such a tyrannical boss. She had a new assistant every episode.
- 47:15Speaker 2: And I was fine, was like, whatever, I just want
- 47:16Speaker 2: this job. I think this is a job I can get.
- 47:18Speaker 2: I need the money. I need a job. And and
- 47:21Speaker 2: and they wanted they wanted to aim higher. They were like,
- 47:23Speaker 2: you should try to be a series regular. You should
- 47:25Speaker 2: try to be at least a guest star. This is
- 47:26Speaker 2: this is a terrible money. We won't make any commission.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Blah blah blah blah.
- 47:29Speaker 1: And I was like, while, You're like, I need the
- 47:31Speaker 1: fucking money, and they're like, no, We're going to hold
- 47:33Speaker 1: out for you to get a lead. It's like, bro,
- 47:35Speaker 1: I need money.
- 47:36Speaker 2: And I was like, I could get this. This is
- 47:39Speaker 2: a job I could get. I feel like this is
- 47:41Speaker 2: a this is And so they finally got me the appointment.
- 47:45Speaker 2: And I had a couple of auditions and then and
- 47:48Speaker 2: then I got it, and and I showed up on
- 47:52Speaker 2: set and Vanessa Williams was completely awesome, and she I
- 47:58Speaker 2: had this idea that my character was obsessed with her,
- 48:00Speaker 2: So I was always blocked right behind her, and I
- 48:03Speaker 2: would just kind of like be here. I would do
- 48:05Speaker 2: I would do anything she did. So she would turn
- 48:07Speaker 2: and I would turn and and and and she didn't
- 48:10Speaker 2: know I was doing it. And somebody, like some somebody
- 48:13Speaker 2: a makeup artist or a costume designer or some costume
- 48:16Speaker 2: person said they took her aside and they were like,
- 48:18Speaker 2: you know what that queen's doing behind you? She's like
- 48:21Speaker 2: what said. She's he's like doing you. He's like, he's
- 48:24Speaker 2: like mocking you. Behind you.
- 48:26Speaker 1: Oh no.
- 48:26Speaker 2: And she came over to me and she's like, I
- 48:28Speaker 2: hear you're doing me behind me. And I was like,
- 48:30Speaker 2: I'm fired. Fuck, I'm fired. And I said, yeah, I am,
- 48:34Speaker 2: and she goes.
- 48:35Speaker 3: That's great. What else can I do that you can do?
- 48:38Speaker 2: And so then suddenly I'm pitching her physical physical moves.
- 48:43Speaker 2: She said, I can and and and then she's like,
- 48:46Speaker 2: stand closer, you'll be in the shot. She like knew
- 48:48Speaker 2: what the sho I didn't know where the shots were.
- 48:49Speaker 2: She was like, if you stand closer, you'll be in
- 48:51Speaker 2: the shot. And by the end of the pilot shoot,
- 48:55Speaker 2: they brought me in to be in the cast photo.
- 48:59Speaker 2: So and then they decided not to have her have
- 49:01Speaker 2: a new assistant every week, and I was and I
- 49:03Speaker 2: was in every episode.
- 49:04Speaker 1: That's amazing. I know a lot about her character.
- 49:07Speaker 3: Yeah. That and she's very very smart.
- 49:10Speaker 4: She can recognize the talent and say all right, look,
- 49:13Speaker 4: well let's run with Let's run with what you got,
- 49:17Speaker 4: because if.
- 49:17Speaker 1: You have someone was trying to someone was trying to
- 49:20Speaker 1: make her threatened by where she was like, no, that's
- 49:22Speaker 1: a good bit, let's lean in.
- 49:23Speaker 3: Go, let's go.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Yeah, you think about you know, actors who would be
- 49:27Speaker 2: too insecure to do something like that, or think like, no,
- 49:30Speaker 2: that's not the story is about me, not about.
- 49:32Speaker 1: Or be judged, or or just take the gossip as
- 49:35Speaker 1: gospel and just go, oh, he's working with you, Like
- 49:38Speaker 1: that's what he's doing at all right right now for
- 49:43Speaker 1: finding an angle though, because you got to find an
- 49:45Speaker 1: angle always.
- 49:47Speaker 2: That Yeah, well, thank you, Yeah, that was I was.
- 49:50Speaker 2: I was just going for it. I was like, whatever,
- 49:52Speaker 2: whatever I can do, I'm gonna I'm gonna make a
- 49:53Speaker 2: million choices. I'm going to you know, try to try
- 49:56Speaker 2: to try to make it make a mark.
- 49:58Speaker 1: And how long did the show go.
- 50:00Speaker 2: We did four years, four seasons. It was. It was
- 50:04Speaker 2: a really amazing experience and and a lot of us
- 50:07Speaker 2: on that show were brand new. We had you know,
- 50:10Speaker 2: had there was several of us who'd not done anything.
- 50:13Speaker 2: And then we had a few people like Vanessa Williams
- 50:17Speaker 2: and Tony Plana who played Betty's dad, and Judith Light
- 50:20Speaker 2: who were these vets that were incredible and and there
- 50:26Speaker 2: were no two of us that were the same. Like
- 50:28Speaker 2: it was one of those shows like shrinking, where there's
- 50:30Speaker 2: nobody alike on the show, so there's no competition at all. Ever,
- 50:35Speaker 2: we were always we were always like totally a family,
- 50:39Speaker 2: and it was right away a hit. It was like
- 50:41Speaker 2: a really popular show right away, like kind of tapped
- 50:44Speaker 2: into something that people wanted to see at the time.
- 50:48Speaker 2: And America won all the awards. And because we had
- 50:52Speaker 2: Judith and Tony and Vanessa who had all been through
- 50:56Speaker 2: so many shows, you know, they'd all done shows and
- 51:00Speaker 2: had lots of experience in Hollywood and doing showbiz. They
- 51:06Speaker 2: they made sure we knew how special it was, and
- 51:09Speaker 2: none of us ever took it for granted. And it
- 51:12Speaker 2: was really happy, a really happy set, and we were
- 51:16Speaker 2: doing We're doing cool work, you know. I mean, I
- 51:18Speaker 2: had this amazing episode where I came out to my mom.
- 51:21Speaker 2: Patty Lapone played my mom, and I had been in
- 51:24Speaker 2: the closet to her and I came out to her
- 51:25Speaker 2: and she didn't accept me and she turned her back
- 51:28Speaker 2: on me, and it was really powerful and it made
- 51:30Speaker 2: a big deal. I mean, I just got I got
- 51:32Speaker 2: a tweet just the other day from someone saying, ugly
- 51:35Speaker 2: Betty helped me come out of the closet and it
- 51:38Speaker 2: went well, and like people are still like it's still
- 51:41Speaker 2: doing it.
- 51:42Speaker 1: A big difference for a lot of people who who
- 51:45Speaker 1: were looking up to that character.
- 51:47Speaker 2: I think, yeah, I think it was really good writing
- 51:50Speaker 2: and and a character that he was. He was like
- 51:53Speaker 2: mean on the show. But then like when they let
- 51:57Speaker 2: me have, you know, a personal life, you saw that
- 52:00Speaker 2: there was something underneath that, and I think that sort
- 52:03Speaker 2: of disarmed people. They thought, oh, this is a funny,
- 52:06Speaker 2: you know, bitchy, mean guy, and then like, oh, actually
- 52:08Speaker 2: that's that's cover for what you know, what what what
- 52:14Speaker 2: has been hurting him all these years?
- 52:16Speaker 3: And it really is a really blessing. It really is
- 52:19Speaker 3: a blessing. Man, When you really look at it, it's
- 52:21Speaker 3: like you just wanted to audition because you know.
- 52:23Speaker 4: I think I could do that. Shit, I think I
- 52:25Speaker 4: could do that. But then it turns into oh, this
- 52:27Speaker 4: is setting.
- 52:28Speaker 3: You up for a nice fucking career man a night,
- 52:32Speaker 3: This is setting you up for the experience that you
- 52:35Speaker 3: were looking for. This is making you making your dream
- 52:38Speaker 3: come true. And all you were really trying to do
- 52:40Speaker 3: is I just want to get into a pilot. To
- 52:42Speaker 3: be honest with you, yeah, you.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Know, absolutely I've been I would have been happy if
- 52:45Speaker 2: if that was it, I didn't expect it to get
- 52:47Speaker 2: picked up. I didn't expect them to could keep me.
- 52:49Speaker 2: And I just was like, great, i may make my
- 52:51Speaker 2: three thousand dollars and then I'll go, you know, back
- 52:54Speaker 2: to my life and haven't have a new credit on
- 52:58Speaker 2: my resume. And then it changed my whole life, totally
- 53:01Speaker 2: changed my life.
- 53:02Speaker 3: Let's take a break.
- 53:03Speaker 1: We'll be right back after these fine words. Let's talk
- 53:13Speaker 1: about shrinking, because I know.
- 53:16Speaker 3: You guys, you guys kind of got to talk about it.
- 53:19Speaker 9: Well.
- 53:19Speaker 1: I want to talk about shrinking because this will air.
- 53:23Speaker 1: I don't know when this will air, but the episodes
- 53:26Speaker 1: of season two that I've directed are are came out
- 53:30Speaker 1: both this week and the next one, and episode four
- 53:33Speaker 1: comes out next week. And I just I know I'm
- 53:36Speaker 1: biased because I work on the show, but I love
- 53:39Speaker 1: the show. I'm such a genuine fan of the show.
- 53:41Speaker 1: And Michael, I have to say, working with you, it's
- 53:45Speaker 1: just so much fun. You make me laugh so much.
- 53:48Speaker 1: I love watching you, you know, vacillate between being extremely
- 53:53Speaker 1: hilarious and and and and silly to the serious dramatic
- 54:00Speaker 1: stuff you get to do in in episode four, in particular,
- 54:04Speaker 1: but I never asked you how it came about, how
- 54:06Speaker 1: you got the part and what was the experience like.
- 54:09Speaker 2: Well, first of all, thank you, and I did. I
- 54:12Speaker 2: just want I'm watching them in order this year. I haven't.
- 54:15Speaker 2: I've only seen the first three. I'm watching them as
- 54:19Speaker 2: they air because I don't know why. That's just what
- 54:21Speaker 2: my partner and I decided to do.
- 54:23Speaker 3: But I I just watched three.
- 54:25Speaker 1: It's so good, Zach, thank you.
- 54:27Speaker 3: It's such my god.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Those two back to back scenes where Luke and Lukeita
- 54:34Speaker 2: both lose their tempers was very upsetting. It's so moving,
- 54:39Speaker 2: and it was a really good episode.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and four is Uh is a banger? Four is Uh?
- 54:48Speaker 1: Four is one of those special ones Bill Bill. Bill
- 54:51Speaker 1: always gives me really good stuff because he trusts me,
- 54:54Speaker 1: and we have we have a history from me directing
- 54:56Speaker 1: scrubs where he would always give me sort of the
- 54:58Speaker 1: big ones. And I love that when I come on drinking.
- 55:02Speaker 1: But you know, eight, Season one, episode eight was a
- 55:05Speaker 1: really sort of special episode and and so I love
- 55:08Speaker 1: that I get to get to do it. But tell me,
- 55:10Speaker 1: tell everyone your your sort of origin shrinking, because it
- 55:13Speaker 1: was a very I'm sure everyone wanted, uh this part
- 55:17Speaker 1: with this cast Harrison Ford and Jason Siegel and and everyone.
- 55:23Speaker 2: Well, when I auditioned, and I didn't know, I knew
- 55:25Speaker 2: Jason was doing it, I didn't know Harrison was doing it.
- 55:30Speaker 2: So I only knew that, you know, Bill, Jason, and Brett,
- 55:34Speaker 2: those three names, and that was very exciting to me.
- 55:38Speaker 2: I was I was watched, I had watched or was
- 55:40Speaker 2: watching Ted Lasso, and of course knew Jason's work, and
- 55:47Speaker 2: and I had met Jason one time and he was
- 55:50Speaker 2: very you know, like at a weird big you know, TV,
- 55:53Speaker 2: CBS something or other, and he was very nice to me,
- 55:56Speaker 2: and I remember thinking, oh, well, he seems like a
- 55:58Speaker 2: really good guy. And they sent me the pilot script
- 56:01Speaker 2: or the first episode. I guess it wasn't a pilot.
- 56:03Speaker 2: They sent me the first episode script, which my character's
- 56:06Speaker 2: not really in. You see him across the street.
- 56:08Speaker 1: But he's not really you're in the pilot. I forgot that.
- 56:11Speaker 2: Yeah, So I so that script was so good, and
- 56:15Speaker 2: then I get my sides were basically all of my
- 56:18Speaker 2: scenes from the second episode. But I didn't get the
- 56:20Speaker 2: second episode, so I see what this show is going
- 56:24Speaker 2: to be like, which is funny and sad and so good.
- 56:28Speaker 2: And then I see this character that's going to show
- 56:31Speaker 2: up later somewhere later, and it's you know, all these
- 56:36Speaker 2: I had it hilarious scene, this scene where I burst
- 56:38Speaker 2: into his office and I chew him out, this scene
- 56:41Speaker 2: where I'm pretending to be a real lawyer or we're
- 56:44Speaker 2: pretending to be a criminal lawyer. And then the great
- 56:47Speaker 2: moving scene where we were playing pickleball and we get
- 56:50Speaker 2: into the fight and we say love, I love you
- 56:52Speaker 2: and all that stuff. So I was like, oh my gosh,
- 56:54Speaker 2: this guy's have all of these things. And I knew
- 56:57Speaker 2: I could tell based on the script. I was like,
- 56:59Speaker 2: he's his motto is everything goes my way. He seems
- 57:01Speaker 2: to be this plucky, happy, you know, happy happy dude,
- 57:04Speaker 2: but there's going to be something else. The other shoe
- 57:07Speaker 2: will eventually drop. I can tell that they're not going
- 57:09Speaker 2: to just have some surface character in here. And I
- 57:13Speaker 2: didn't know anybody involved. I had met Jason that one time,
- 57:18Speaker 2: but you know, he wouldn't remember and didn't didn't had never,
- 57:23Speaker 2: had never met anybody, and so it was just like
- 57:26Speaker 2: this audition that came my way, and I made a
- 57:29Speaker 2: tape in my room with Ryan, my partner read red
- 57:32Speaker 2: opposite me and sent it off and and I've gotten
- 57:38Speaker 2: pretty good at forgetting about it, you know, you like
- 57:40Speaker 2: make it.
- 57:41Speaker 3: You said it a long time because this is after COVID,
- 57:43Speaker 3: that's right, holy shit, So this is also the new
- 57:46Speaker 3: wave of auditioning too, right right there.
- 57:50Speaker 1: It was it a long time because I always find
- 57:53Speaker 1: it's frustrating when you do something and it's a you're
- 57:58Speaker 1: proud of the tape you put in, and then it's
- 58:01Speaker 1: one thing to be like, you're not right, they're going
- 58:03Speaker 1: to go with so and so, or they're they're talking
- 58:06Speaker 1: about it they like. But then sometimes you just don't
- 58:08Speaker 1: hear and you're like, I didn't even hear negative or positive.
- 58:10Speaker 1: It's been fucking a.
- 58:11Speaker 2: Month, right, Yeah, it was that. It was that I
- 58:16Speaker 2: didn't hear anything for a while, and I and I
- 58:18Speaker 2: did kind of. I was busy. I was doing a play,
- 58:20Speaker 2: so it was like I was keeping busy, and you know,
- 58:24Speaker 2: it was also such a good job that I it's
- 58:28Speaker 2: sort of like it was easier to let like.
- 58:31Speaker 3: When did shrinking come back? When did shrinking started?
- 58:36Speaker 1: I mean start?
- 58:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I forgot that was probably twenty two, I guess
- 58:41Speaker 2: it was like spring of twenty two, maybe maybe winter
- 58:44Speaker 2: into the spring of twenty twenty two. It was when
- 58:47Speaker 2: I auditioned.
- 58:48Speaker 3: Were you doing plays before COVID happened? Also? Was that?
- 58:52Speaker 2: Yeah, So I was doing a lot of plays after
- 58:55Speaker 2: Ugly Betty. I came back to New York and did
- 58:57Speaker 2: a ton of plays, and I was, you know, I
- 59:00Speaker 2: was able to get a lot into a lot better
- 59:03Speaker 2: rooms and do some like serious cool work because had
- 59:08Speaker 2: success because I was on TV. Yeah, and and so
- 59:12Speaker 2: this play, this is a really cool play about William Shakespeare.
- 59:16Speaker 2: My friend Talene Monahan wrote this hilarious play for my
- 59:19Speaker 2: partner and me. We read it during the pandemic. We
- 59:22Speaker 2: did like on zoom. We would read it and it
- 59:24Speaker 2: was the idea was and this is based on a
- 59:27Speaker 2: true thing. William Shakespeare wrote king Lear in Quarantine during
- 59:32Speaker 2: the Black Plague. So she wrote a play about it,
- 59:35Speaker 2: a comedy about it. That he was like stuck in
- 59:38Speaker 2: quarantine with an idiot apprentice from his theater company and
- 59:42Speaker 2: he wrote king Lear. And so that's what the play is,
- 59:44Speaker 2: and it's so funny. So we were doing that play
- 59:48Speaker 2: and that's why I have a beard and shrinking actually
- 59:52Speaker 2: is because I had a beard as William Shakespeare. That's
- 59:56Speaker 2: then when I got it. Yeah, so I was kind
- 59:58Speaker 2: of preoccupied doing this play and the job seemed such
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: a good job that I was like, all right, that's
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: that's a if that happened, that would be more than amazing.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: So I'm just gonna pretend like it, pretend like it's
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: it's not happening, and and and and and forget about it.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: And quite a while.
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: I feel like it was like a month.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: That went by and and my agents were like, let's
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: set up a call. We have an update about that show.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: It was called Pinch then, or that was the code name.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: We have an update about Pinch. And I was like, okay, great,
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: oh yeah, what's that about? Yeah right, that show? Okay cool,
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: And we got on the phone. I got on the
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: phone with my reps and they were like, well, there's
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: They were like, there's interest in Pinch.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: We'll get back to you. And I was like, oh okay.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: And then they got on the phone they were like, well,
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: we really thought this was going to go to a
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: test deal. And I was like, oh gosh, what happened
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: And they're like, well, they just offered it to you.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: What kind of agency are you with? And so suddenly
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: like I got that's awesome.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: Man.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: It was such a And I never met anybody. I
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: didn't have to, and I thought I would have to read.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: Never even FaceTime with Bill.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: No, I met Bill.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: He knew, he knew, he just knew.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember I got to the table right.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: I would never cast somebody without talking to them. I mean,
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: even if your audition was amazing, I would just wanted
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: to see your personality and shoot the ship with you.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Bill was like, no, him.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: I wonder you know later I later I did find out,
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: because at the time I didn't know. I didn't think
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: I knew anybody involved. And then and then up until
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: basically the first day, I thought I knew nobody on
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: the show. But then it turned out Brian Gallavan, who
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: you know, Zach.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Is one of our one of the writers on the show.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: I had done a pilot for him a few years earlier,
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: so I imagined that he vouched for me as like you know,
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: like and.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: And but well everyone does recon.
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: You've been in business, Yeah, I say, you've been in
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: the business long enough. You have a reputation. Everybody knows
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: what's your reputation. Yeah, I'm sure they did.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Everybody, everybody who's been doing this a little while does
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: recon because they're like, all right, he's a good actor.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: What's his vibe? Like, yeah, what's ruin my set with
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: this diva attitude?
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: And the first thing Bill said to me, well to
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: all of us, was well it was for the table
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: We've got there for the table read, and I met
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: everybody for the first time. Hello, nice to meet you,
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: Harrison Ford, Nice to meet you, Krista Miller, Nice to
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: meet you, Jason Siegel, and Chris Has said, my husband
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: thinks you're very funny. And I was like, oh, that's
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: really good. And then uh, and then we were at
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: the door, we about to go in for the table read,
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: and Bill came out. And that was the first time
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: I met Bill, and he said, all right, nobody gets
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: fired off my shows after table reads, just so you know,
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: go in there and have a good time. And we did.
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: It's not who got fired, who got fired. Nobody's control.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: If people get fired, even though he's the all powerful
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: Bill Lawrence, if the networks like, nope, you get fired,
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: it does happen. The best advice, the best advice we
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: can give you is.
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: Michael got the part on a tape audition? Bro like that.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: I'm we have advised young actors on this podcast before
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: that when you make it to the table, read don't
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: still got to go in, don't make you think, don't
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: think auditionings over.
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: No, that's that that that that is the final audition
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: right then and there.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: No, not even then right.
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: Comes on television?
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Made it listen Bill, Bill's fired people that fucking shot
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: three episodes and like it's not working. Replace the character.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: So you know, yeah, I mean yeah, I've been in
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: sitcom run throughs where people got fired or you know,
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: like that thing where they're like, oykay, the network is
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: going to discuss everybody sequester yourselves in your dressing room
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: and you have to like wait in there and find out.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: If you're ask Eric, it's about back to the future.
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: In the future, asked Charlie. She about two and a
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: half men.
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: That motherfucker did eight seasons and they're like, you know what,
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: too much?
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: That was eating.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: You can't take it anymore?
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: That was that was that was eating.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: They made it eight seasons. They made eight seasons out
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: of it.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: Though, who was the star of Apocalypse now got replaced
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: Danel and you must know that who.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: By Martin Sheen, the guy who was playing.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: She replaced him. I forgot who was the lead George C.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: Scott, George Wolf, George George.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: George Wolf was the lead in who was that? It
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: was Harvey Kayitel Harvey k.
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: Wow. Imagine walking around with that for a while.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: They shot a bunch of the movie and Francis Ford
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Coppola was like, this isn't right and replaced him.
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: Same thing happened. Eric steltzwe back to the future.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: There's some movie that Robert de Niro got fired from.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: This is recently, like in the last ten years, and
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: that he didn't he like didn't know his lines or something.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: And the director had a long shot like a pan
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: or a push, like a long push that he and
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: he needed he needed it to happen in one and
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: Denier didn't know his lines. And at the end of
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: the day the producer was like, all right, you can,
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: we can fire him. I'll do it. I'll fire him,
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: and the director was like, no, I'm going.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: To do it. Oh my god. Do you know what
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: movie it was?
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't remember, but I want to say, oh,
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: that great actor replaced him. It wasn't a big it
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: wasn't a big movie, but it was that cool actor.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: It was Yeah, so.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: Shrinking is is so good and you have such great
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: chemistry with with everyone, and you really have good chemistry
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: with the guy. I'm sorry, I forgot his name? Who
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: plays your lover?
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: Oh?
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Devinka Oka's He's He's wonderful and we we go back.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: We actually knew each other. I didn't. They came to
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: me and they were like, this is the guy we're
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: thinking of casting. I think just to make sure I
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: didn't hate him, and I was like, I know.
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: Him, I love him.
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: We we we have a bunch of friends in common,
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: and so I knew him and we even during the pandemic.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: We were part of a Zoom game of Mafia.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: Does Maia work on.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: We? We would like it would like chat. You would
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: like like we have private chats?
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Uh?
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: Like I think on Zoom you can do like like
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: group chats and private chats. And so it was like that,
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: and there was one person was the host, and it
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: was fun. It was fun for a while, and then
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: after a while I was like, we can't really lie
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: to each other. Anymore we've gotten too close.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Well, the cast is really great. Everyone should check out Shrinking.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: And now you're doing Once Upon a Mattress on Broadway
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: with the legendary Sutton Foster. You know I have a
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: connection to the show two ways. I did the show
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: in camp. I played Dauntless, which is your car stage
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: at the stage stage Man. That's how I've been able
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: to sing to you some of your I went to
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: see the show.
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: And of course have you heard of stage door manor
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: Michael Yes from Zach Actually remember you telling me about it?
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: Hey, you heard of stage or matter before me?
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: I must have heard of it. But like the year
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: of my real that's how I really learned.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Oh, I just thought being in New York and Broadway,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: someone would have brought it up to you before.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: He got there when he was seventeen young.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: But just it's in those guys to people are talking
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: about things. Anyway. I did a play with Sutton Foster
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: as well with Bobby Kinavali and Eric Rainer, and she
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: was a dominatrix and I really love her, and she
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: was always so kind to my father. My father, my
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: late father was very very into Broadway and Sutton for
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: those who don't know Sutton Foster. She is one of
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: the most beloved Broadway stars there is, and she was
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: always so loving and kind and able to receive my
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: father's adoration. And I just I had a wonderful time
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: coming to see your show when I come back. When
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: I came backstage to see you, it was not great
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: to see you, but also Sutton was so nice and
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: mentioned my father, and it made me feel nice.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: She is really really good person, Like, yeah, she's amazing
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: on stage, I mean amazing, but like she makes you
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: feel like you're the most important person in the room,
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: which is and I think she means that, Like she
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: really really is engaged and caring and filled with love
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: and energy. But as you know, being on stage with
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: her is it's like it's like it's like beyond living,
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: like there's something super nova. She's like, she's like it's
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: it's like an electricity.
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: That that that.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: I remember, you know, when I was a kid going
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: to see Tommy Tuone at the fair Park Music Hall,
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: being way up in the balcony, I could see his
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: face even though I was three blocks away. I think
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Sutton has that quality. There's a reason why she's a
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: Broadway star, and that she's in musical after musical, and
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: and it's that that wattage. It's just bigger than than she.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: Does it all. I mean, she can. She's very funny.
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: She's been one.
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: She was on television for a really long time. She
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: had five seasons on a show on TV Land. Like
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: she's got she's got skills.
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: She's not. You know, it ain't she ain't on broad
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: but she hasn't. It's not she doesn't get these Broadway roles. Uh,
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: by luck. It's for a reason. Did she got the talent?
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: And this show is filled with Broadway legends. We've got Broke,
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: who I know you worked to and I love him.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: And Daniel Breaker, who plays the Jester. He was two
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: years ahead of me at Juilliard and he is like
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: my hero. And he is an incredible stage actor. Think
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: he's an incredible actor. He starts the show, he opens
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: the show with this wonderful like lullaby and the audience
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: he has the audience in the palm of his hand,
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: and a lot of what he does in the show,
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: a lot of what he says, he's sort of made
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: up himself. He's sort of like come up with and
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: it's just completely unique. No one's ever done it like
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: that before.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: The show is bizarre, but very funny. It's such a
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: weird show.
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: It's a weird show. I think that's because of the
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: way that it was created. It was made at a camp,
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: like an adult camp. In the camp for adults where
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: adults would go used to go in the in the fifties,
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: and it was a place where singles could go and
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: meet people. But the camp would hire performers to entertain
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: the campgoers, and they they would hire a cast, and
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: they would hire creatives to put on shows, reviews or whatever.
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: And they brought Mary Rogers and the other writers of
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: this show one year and somebody said, let's do the
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: Princess and the Peak, and they had and they wrote
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: the show around the actors they had. So there was
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: an actor who couldn't sing and and really couldn't dance,
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: and so they were like, well, let's let's let's write
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: him this a mute character and everything he does can
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: be And then there was somebody else's like, well, she's
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: not a great singer, but she's great at talking, so
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: let's write her a bunch of a bunch of words.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: And then somebody was really limber and could belt, and
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: they were like, well, she can play, she can be
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: our star.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: Yeah, it is just a wacky show. But if you're
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: bringing it to l A, right, that's this is a
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: unique situation where the actual cast is going to do
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: it in LA. The whole Broadway cast, everybody or everybody
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: who's going to Sutton who's coming.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: Sudden and on a Gastre who plays the Queen my
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: mom and a star is very good, and and Daniel
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: Breaker and David Patrick Kelly who plays my dad. Uh
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: and then some of the other people can't go. Brooks
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: is doing Smash.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: I saw. I just texted Brooks because I said, two
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: of my favorite gay things in the world are Brooks,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: Sash Manskis and Smash. And the fact that are.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: They doing They're doing Smash the TV show, I mean the.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: Musicals that the musical that they made in the show Smash.
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: Shut the fuck up, no way. I texted yes because
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: his Stormy was made a knight so cold the door,
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: turn out the lights and listen.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: Donald and I were the only people watching Smash. I
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: got to do when I finally got in a Broadway musical,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: When I finally got into Broadway musical. I walked in.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: I was like, you guys love Smash as much as
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: I do. And they're like, you're watching Smash. I loved Smash.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: I texted Brooks, I'm like, are you McFee.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: He's the director. Well, you know, director direct.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: They must have changed that guy because he was a
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: sort of.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: European momanizer. Yeah, so it's different now. Now it's like,
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: it's like Brooks and I think it's a funnier role.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: But uh, it's so it's like, it's not the same story,
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: but it's it's still them making a musical about Marilyn Monroe.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: And oh so the musical will still be it won't
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: be the musical. It will still be a musical about
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: making the music.
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm intriguing. I will be seated. I will be seated.
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: Donald's really good too. I like the fact that you
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: guys are all coming out to l a though. Man,
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: you're talking about that back in the day and how
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: shows came through your town and everything like that. I
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: wish it was like that still.
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: I wish that, you know, once you I think a
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: lot of people would enjoy this experience. You do the
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: Broadway run and then you take it on the road
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: with the same casts.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: Not necessarily the road, because if you're a big Broadway star,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: you don't really want to go nowhere.
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: People want to see that. People, people look. It's like theater.
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: It's like movie theaters or theater all over again. Man,
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: you go fucking go see the Buster Keaton jump off.
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: You go see the fuck you know what I mean,
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: especially if they're coming to your town.
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: Small tool stars would do that, Carol Channing, Mary Martin,
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Tommy Tooon, like the old school stars things, you.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Know, if you have a family, and it can be
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: tricky for people to do a tour, but I think
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: I think as a as a half measure at least,
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: it's very cool for the og leads to say, okay,
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: and we're going to do it for a month or
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: two in LA That's cool.
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I love it.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: I'm really excited to do.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: That any one of the dates that your wait, So
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: tell audience members when how long is you run? Until
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: in New York until.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: You can catch us on Broadway until November thirty, and
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: then we play the Almendson Theater in Los Angeles December
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: tenth through January the fifth.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: Okay, great, so people in La go see them at
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: the Alminson. I was with my mom. She's so cute.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: She I saw her at my brother's birthday party and
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: she brought out a little a little pamphlet and been
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: sent her in the mail from the Ammend Center. And
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: she opened it up and she goes, look, Sutton's coming
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: to town. And I said, Mom, I know. And then
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: that's Michael Uri. He's on the show Shrinking. She goes,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: I know, I'm going to go to this one. My
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: mom will be seated for Michael Yurry and Sutton Foster.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: It'll be cool there. It'll be really, It'll be really
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: and it's a really for us. It's a nice way
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: to spend the holidays, you know, doing a family because
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: it's for everybody. Everybody can come see the show. You
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: can bring your kids, you can.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: Bring your grandma. It's one of those shows that has
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: some sexual innuendo that will just go over your kids' heads. Yeah,
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: and a lot of that was pulled back because the
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: show used to be way more naudience and they needed
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: a little more PG.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: Yeah, we kind of got rid of There was some
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: like edible stuff between my mother and me.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: That we kind of got ready because she was in
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: love with you. Yeah, there was some of that.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: They cut that, and then there was the King was
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: like kind of grabby, but that's we didn't that. But
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: but but the it works like a Looney Tunes cartoon,
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: where like there is stuff that's for the adults that
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: the kids are like, why is that funny? And then
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: there's the stuff that the kids love and the and
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: the parents the adults love. There's nothing like the sound
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: of kids laughing. I mean, it's it's just like it's awesome.
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: And and there's a lot of stuff that happens in
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: the show where just the kids laugh. And when that happens,
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: when we when we get to those moments and we
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: hear how many kids are out there, it's so fun
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: for everybody. The whole audience loves hearing those those kids laughs.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: I think l a last question, Michael, This is something
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: that came up before we brought to you on the air,
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: but just added curiosity if Donald were again and only
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: fans and and one of the offers was to sha
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: before we did this.
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: I remember, I remember, I remember the monologue what if
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: a million years ago a flash and energy.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: We don't want to hear it coming to you.
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: Who knows where landed there, coming from the desert to
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: space to this grain of sand known as Earth. What
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: if we did not come from Africa but to Africa? Now,
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: after seeing that on Only Fans.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: No, okay, let's say that's the flea thing, that's the
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: that's the thing you get for free on only Fans.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: Naked and I'm holding and I'm no, no, no, no,
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: ball not cupping.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: Let me give Michael the pitch please, okay, go ahead.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: He's clothed and looking over his shoulders, sort of flirtatiously,
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: and he does his little Africa monolog and then you
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: can pay twenty bucks just to see him hold his balls.
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: We'd out of curiosity. Would you pay the twenty bucks?
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: And that's not the question about the question is That's
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: not the question. Hold up, that's not the question, Mike, Michael,
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: that's not the question. The question is He said that.
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: Only gay men would freaking look at me, and I
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: was like, no, I'm universal, baby, I think straight women,
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: gay men, I think freaking trans I think and nybody.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: Daniel said that he thinks the biggest piece of the
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: pie chart would be straight scrubs men.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: I mean, I mean, I think the curiosity would probably
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: get them.
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, absolutely absolutely.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: And you know, like like mid forties women who love
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: clueless probably.
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: I don't know about gay man. I'm not sure. If
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: I don't know, what are.
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: You talking about? All men?
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: You wouldn't want to see donald?
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: If you no, fuck you? We're staying thirty bucks? Now?
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: Are you telling me negotiate?
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Are you telling me just your balls? Maybe we throw
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: a we get twenty five bucks.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, see you.
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: There would be a freaking huge part of the gay
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: community that would be interested in seeing my balls and shafts.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: I wish there was a survey we could do on this.
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: Let's do one, let's do one.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: We probably can. I don't think we should. It might
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: hurt his ego. Fuck you, fuck you. I think listen,
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: I would you would get my You.
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: Know what if you listen, If you're not into this,
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: if you don't, you don't deserve it anyway, then how
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: about that. If y'all ain't into this, then you don't
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: deserve it. That's universal. That's for everybody out there.
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: I'll tell the case.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: Michael Michael Doug Life Michael knows actual homosexuals and can
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: and can tell them to tell everyone.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I have a I have a thread going.
