- 0:12finances and business practices to help you become the millionaire dentist you deserve to
- 0:16be. Please be advised we do speak with an honest tongue and may not
- 0:20be safe for work. Hello and welcome. This is Casey Hires back at
- 0:26the Millionaire DNNIS podcast in studio with co host Jared Bridgeman. Casey, how
- 0:31are you good to see us? Sir? Good to see you. You
- 0:33just got back into town not that long ago. Weren't you out and about
- 0:36had a fun event? Man went out to the west suburbs of Saint Louis
- 0:41Webster's Grove, if you will. Okay, it's far enough out from downtown
- 0:44Saint Louis that people like it. Yep. Also close to the extreme western
- 0:48suburbs that are lovely to come eastward. All right, Webster's Grove, Webster's
- 0:53Grove went to a really nice place. Okay. Today's podcast is going to
- 0:58be about venue matters. Venue matters, and by venue it can also mean
- 1:02practice matters. Right, nice matters? What about Family Matters. What a
- 1:06great show. A little arkle. Okay, I'm telling you what. I
- 1:08got my ten year old daughter into that show recently. It's gold. Yes,
- 1:11yes, so Casey you were you were out there. You were at
- 1:15at a pretty nice restaurant presenting doing CE and we were also partaking in a
- 1:23in a bourbon tasting. Yeah. Yeah, this is some actually, some
- 1:27good friends of ours who like the finer things in life. They moved from
- 1:32my neighborhood to the Western suburbs and I told them, Hey, I'm going
- 1:34to this place in Webster's Grove called Olive plus Oak and they go, oh,
- 1:42that place is amazing. Okay. I'm like, okay, and especially
- 1:48coming from them, but yeah, I went went to a really nice place.
- 1:51I'll get into that in a little bit later. Yeah, we had
- 1:52a couple of dozen practice owners come for some great or derves at a nice,
- 1:57nice bourbon tasting where we walked through people that don't even like burbon.
- 2:00They were like, this is really cool. I'm learning a lot. And
- 2:02then we transitioned and take a drinking. It burns ours pro but still they
- 2:06had a good time. Yea, how's the first one taste? It burns
- 2:08how's the second one taste it burns more? How's the third one? Taste
- 2:10it burns less. That's why I can't lead stuff like TX and like it
- 2:14all tastes like booze to me. But yes, that's awesome. Yeah,
- 2:15so I had a great time. And it's funny that, you know,
- 2:19on a Thursday night and a great venue again puts everybody in a really,
- 2:23really good mood. We had a nice event, even though our subject matter
- 2:25is tough, but yeah, I had had a great event. A lot
- 2:30of people learned a lot and some might even look to fix some of those
- 2:35challenges on the business side of dentistry. But it got me thinking. And
- 2:38then we did a top golf the next day as well, So I had
- 2:40a real nice time. But it got me thinking venue matters, and what
- 2:44I mean by that is some of the places that we look to go to
- 2:47for these events. We're looking to see whole a whole lot of things.
- 2:51Yeah, I was gonna ask you, when someone says to you, oh,
- 2:54that's a great venue, what comes to mind? What are some expectations
- 2:58you may have for a great venue. Here's my here's my list. It's
- 3:02again, it's in a good area, when you walk in, it's esthetically
- 3:07pleasing that I butcher that aesthetically pleasing. Their food is impeccable, right,
- 3:14they have unique things like an appetizer maybe you don't see, or maybe a
- 3:19wine or or a bourbon that you don't see. So they have some unique
- 3:23offerings and then impeccable service. You can see they've got that sparkle in their
- 3:28eye, that pep in their step. They want your evening to be good.
- 3:30That's the thing is with it. With a great venue or great practice
- 3:32or great anything, all those things have to be firing in all cylinders.
- 3:38Yep. One thing that's bad can leave a really bad impression. Yeah,
- 3:44no, that's uh, that's exactly right. And we had such a great
- 3:49night because almost everything was firing on all cylinders. Are our attendees. My
- 3:54gosh, they were having a great time. But I see I wasn't invited,
- 4:00so that's good. We had a packed house. We were actually oversold.
- 4:03They were a little nervous with fire code. But neither here nor there.
- 4:08But again, venue matters. As we're looking to some of these different
- 4:11cities, our events coordinator, we run through those right, where do we
- 4:15want to go? And then We'll find something that's it, that's special,
- 4:19that's unique. People want to go there. Let's correlate that obviously to two
- 4:24practices and dentists. When someone says that's a great practice, what comes to
- 4:29your mind in terms of coming from a patient. It's a good question.
- 4:31And let me back up. I've been to practices that had like a pond
- 4:34and a little waterfall a little bit. Yeah, I have, there's some
- 4:39things that are over the top. There's balance to everything. But when it
- 4:42comes to a dental practice, you know, you want to be in a
- 4:46place that people want to come to. And so when I mentioned that sparkle
- 4:50in your eye, the people there, they wanted to make sure you had
- 4:56a good experience. They offered things that maybe were rare, right So in
- 5:00vision line botox, there's different things in a practice you can offer your staff
- 5:04or your team. Taking ownership of the total patient experience, right, that
- 5:12matters. You don't have to have the most beautiful, large waterfall office out
- 5:16there, but cosmetically put some lipstick on, some pain on the wall,
- 5:20make it look maybe a nice a nice aroma. Well, this is this
- 5:26is something that that I catch every single time. If it's me or I'm
- 5:30taking one of my kids to see our family dentist is our front office lady
- 5:35greets me by name the second I walk on the door, and she's probably
- 5:40cheating, and I was like, oh, Jared's coming in at three fifteen
- 5:43today, But right, which's like, hey Jared, how are you?
- 5:44How are you kids? But both are true if you're if you have a
- 5:46good software and good office. Yes, they know those things, but how
- 5:50much extra effort did that take and then translated into it made you feel good?
- 5:56Yep? I just heard the song the other day, the Cheers theme
- 5:59song, Right, I'm gonna go where everybody knows your name. It was
- 6:01just it's true, and so those little things je But no, those things,
- 6:08those things really really do matter, being treated as an actual person and
- 6:12an individual instead of just a get in, let's do your teeth and get
- 6:15out. And it doesn't have to be the nicest office, but put a
- 6:19little effort into it, right, I mean, make sure it smells good.
- 6:24Having some decently upholstered chairs is not that hard. Someome bright light,
- 6:28some of this, some of that, but all of that matters. And
- 6:31but the other extreme is way too many practice owners spent way too much money
- 6:36making sure everything is outfitted perfectly, and that's almost they overdo it. That
- 6:43can come from a lot of places. It can come from ego, it
- 6:46can come from pride, it can come from a misconception. But you don't
- 6:48have to spend an obscene amount of money to have the best or the most
- 6:55perfect waiting room, lobby, hallways, operatoris all that stuff. It doesn't
- 6:59have to be because some of the we've seen it, some of the folks
- 7:02with the nicest their numbers are trashed, their incomes terrible, their overhead's terrible,
- 7:08retirement savings is laughable, and they think if they just keep trying to
- 7:12make the place prettier and prettier, that's what's going to fix it. Right,
- 7:15you know, everyone has you know, they have to have the top
- 7:16of everything, and then the perceptions there and then they're going to get there's
- 7:19there's diminishing returns and so there's balance to everything, and that's really important.
- 7:25Now. I will say I've been to some venues like I just mentioned and
- 7:28they're four times too big. Yep, great venue, great food, great
- 7:31service, great offerings, and it's too big, or it's in a street
- 7:36that's too expensive and their overheads. They're going to go out of business,
- 7:41right, and so then what was the cost of getting over your skis and
- 7:44having the best and the nice and so you've got to find that happy medium.
- 7:46But what you can control is your staff taking ownership and having passion to
- 7:53have a good experience, greeting somebody by their first name. You know,
- 7:56nice lighting, nice paint, clean upholstery, maybe some nice music. I
- 8:01mean, I would say it was passion with yourself too in terms of when
- 8:05you see the patient. Yeah, yeah, but I mean it's incredible.
- 8:09I've been to other places again. Venue matters. They just had a flood.
- 8:13The carpeting hadn't been cleaned. It smelled mildewey, it was still soggy.
- 8:18Their their screen, what's the projectors screen? It was broken, so
- 8:24they had a white sheet hanging on the wall where we're projecting me. It
- 8:28was trash, right, There was very little effort. Nobody cared. There
- 8:31wasn't a lot of accountability. Did we accomplish the same thing, Yeah,
- 8:35yeah. We had a nice event at a restaurant and there was food and
- 8:39beverage consumed, and there was great subject matter presented and learned. But they
- 8:46couldn't have been the polar polar opposites. I mean, it's it's the same
- 8:50as you said, like with venus and restaurants. I mean, I've been
- 8:54to places where the food was fantastic, but the place kind of looked like
- 8:58a dive. Well, if you're talking sushi, the best sushi or in
- 9:03the strip malls that you know are going out of business because I don't I
- 9:05don't know why that is, but it's been some of the best sushi joints
- 9:09look a little look, a little little rush, and then some of these
- 9:11large, freestanding, beautiful places have terrible sushi. So it's true, that's
- 9:16true, probably cutting cost on their sushi. Yah. Yeah. Well,
- 9:18and again speaking you know, speaking of good venues, that's incredible. We
- 9:22just keep having more and more people having waiting lists and being oversold for for
- 9:26our for our subject matter. And I always ask people, hey, you
- 9:28know what, why'd you come right? Just probably because the place is cool,
- 9:31and yeah, I know it's cool, we've been here before. We
- 9:33really want to, you know, figure out how to make more in lower
- 9:35overhead and actually retire and not die treating patients. And I go, wow,
- 9:41I'll appreciate your your honesty, You've come to the right place now.
- 9:43Again, the venue matters. I mean, if we did this opportunity at
- 9:46a white Castle, I'm not sure we'd get the same results. That doesn't
- 9:50get me wrong. Our love white Castle for the people who are regional to
- 9:52this area. What an extreme extreme example crystals for down south you know.
- 10:00No, I mean there's there's a lot of nice places we could have these
- 10:01app but again, we want to we want to add, we want to
- 10:05align it. Speaking of great places, we've got a great place lined up
- 10:09for when you're going to Minneapolis in about a week and a half. Yeah,
- 10:13I'm pretty excited about what it's called spooning stable. Huh spoon and what
- 10:18stable? Interesting? I think there's horses inside, but you spoon, you
- 10:22know, it's just make anse. No, but we'll be there on August
- 10:26seventeenth, and then the next day on we'll we get top golf in Brooklyn
- 10:31Park area. So that's August eighteenth. Please check it out. Go to
- 10:35four Quadrants Advisory dot com slash events. Again, these are free to register.
- 10:39You'll get you'll get great education, you'll learn some cool things. Casey
- 10:43might also pokey a bit with you. Know, some verbal jabs in terms
- 10:46of like, here are some problems we've seen across the dental the dental world,
- 10:50and you're probably experiencing that as well. Yeah, you're right ahead.
- 10:54Two more seasoned practice owners in the room, and ultimately, when we played
- 10:58stump to chump, they wanted to argue, and ultimately they admitted, we've
- 11:01spent decades screwing this up and we're trying to defend our failure, and you're
- 11:05right, we should get all right in the face until they get kind of
- 11:07you can just like super defensive about it. One did, one didn't.
- 11:11But ultimately we just spoke very straightforward and they both sort of came around to
- 11:16being like, no, you're you're right. We we didn't have benchmarks,
- 11:20we didn't have goals. We didn't you know, they wanted to argue about
- 11:24different benchmarks for employee wages or hygiene production or insurance adjustments, and ultimately,
- 11:30if you don't have the goals, you're you're not going to even be close
- 11:33to them, right, So again, feel free to check us out.
- 11:37Don't feel free to do it. I mean you just you just said they're
- 11:41they're complimentary. To be honest, we're gonna probably start instituting something where to
- 11:46register to hold your spot, you're gonna have to pay, and then if
- 11:50you attend, you'll get refunded. But we have so much interest, we
- 11:52get overbooked and then you know, a handful people don't come, and then
- 11:56those spots have been ruined. So yeah, I think this may be our
- 11:58last complementary about Yeah, I say, hope you going to heat what Minneapolis,
- 12:01Houston? We got a whole bunch of one place. Yeah, I'm
- 12:03excited to watch you go. That's all the time we have today. Thank
