Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: It's The Happy Family's.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Podcast Merry Christmas, You're Fealthy Animal.
- 0:12Speaker 3: And the Oscar goes to, oh my god, seeing it here,
- 0:21Speaker 3: I know him well.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Christmas is just around the corner. Schools are in some
- 0:26Speaker 1: states finished, some kids are still winding up, and families
- 0:30Speaker 1: are starting to have You noticed, Kylie, there's this switch
- 0:33Speaker 1: between where in one breath we're relaxed, and then the
- 0:37Speaker 1: next breath we're stressed, like we're trying to slow things
- 0:39Speaker 1: down because everyone's going on holidays, but there's so much
- 0:42Speaker 1: to do. There's so much going on.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I just want to slow down. I'm not doing anything.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I'm just hoping the kids are all going to catch
- 0:50Speaker 2: up with me.
- 0:51Speaker 1: There's a favorite quote mine. Yeah, that's right, there's a
- 0:54Speaker 1: favorite quote of mind that and it's particularly pertinent at
- 0:57Speaker 1: this point of the year when your kids are in
- 1:00Speaker 1: your arms, they can't possibly be underfoot, because a lot
- 1:03Speaker 1: of parents at the moment saying other kids is just
- 1:05Speaker 1: under my feet all the time, and I'm trying to
- 1:06Speaker 1: get stuff done and they're sitting around staring at screens
- 1:08Speaker 1: and doing nothing. We have got some solutions. Oh, by
- 1:11Speaker 1: the way, I'm justin you're kilie. Parents of six kids.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Happy Families dot com dot you, the Happy Families podcast
- 1:17Speaker 1: is bringing you some solutions for Christmas. Joy Christmas Bliss.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I know that not everybody wants their kids to be
- 1:24Speaker 1: watching screens all the time, but the reality is sometimes
- 1:27Speaker 1: you kind of just have to right just to get
- 1:30Speaker 1: through and keep saying. So we've compiled, well.
- 1:34Speaker 2: How do you get the presents wrapped if they're not
- 1:36Speaker 2: staring at a screen?
- 1:37Speaker 1: You got to stay up late, and then you're tired
- 1:39Speaker 1: the next day and cranky. So we have compiled a
- 1:43Speaker 1: list of our top I was gonna say top five,
- 1:45Speaker 1: but there's no way we're going to. Last time we
- 1:47Speaker 1: talked favorite movies, we ended up having like Poor O Jr.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Our producer. Instead of doing our top five movies for
- 1:53Speaker 1: whatever it was, we ended up doing like thirty. So
- 1:57Speaker 1: supposedly this is going to be our top five Christmas
- 1:59Speaker 1: movies kids, although I think we're going to veer into
- 2:01Speaker 1: some adult ones as well, to help your family to
- 2:05Speaker 1: have a happy Christmas, but also so that you can
- 2:06Speaker 1: have some peace and quiet. The kids can be watching Christmas,
- 2:08Speaker 1: everyone can be getting into the spirit of Christmas. Christmas
- 2:11Speaker 1: music can be on That's where we're going today, everyone
- 2:17Speaker 1: can be baking gingerbread.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Hell, everyone, are you going to bake ginger browse?
- 2:23Speaker 1: I was going to say, how unrealistic is what I
- 2:24Speaker 1: just said. I've gone for the nostalgia, the romanticized version
- 2:27Speaker 1: of what's happening. Truth is, nobody's going to be doing
- 2:30Speaker 1: any of that sort of stuff except for the one,
- 2:32Speaker 1: poor soul.
- 2:33Speaker 2: We've only just got the Christmas tree up for goodness.
- 2:35Speaker 1: To day decorated. There's literally a green Christmas tree sitting
- 2:39Speaker 1: in the corner with no decoration.
- 2:40Speaker 2: What's surrounded by all my green plants. It actually doesn't
- 2:42Speaker 2: look too bad naked.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I nearly said something I shouldn't have said. So
- 2:48Speaker 1: let's talk about Christmas movies before we g rated one,
- 2:53Speaker 1: before we get to sidetracked with all that sort of stuff. Kylie,
- 2:55Speaker 1: if you were to pick your all time favorite family
- 2:58Speaker 1: Christmas movie, what would it be?
- 3:00Speaker 2: I would have once upon a time said the Polar Express.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I'm wishing on aster. Well you're coming where way to
- 3:12Speaker 1: the North Pole?
- 3:13Speaker 3: Of course this is the Pola Express.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Yeah, we used to love that film, but last year
- 3:19Speaker 2: when we watched a movie a night for each day
- 3:23Speaker 2: leading up to Christmas, we got introduced to so many
- 3:27Speaker 2: new movies and I now have a few favorites.
- 3:29Speaker 1: By the way, just before you talk about your favorites,
- 3:32Speaker 1: I think it's worth highlighting that we took on more
- 3:34Speaker 1: than we could handle by saying let's watch one Christmas
- 3:37Speaker 1: movie each day with the kids or each night. That
- 3:40Speaker 1: was exhausting. I couldn't stand it. It was just too
- 3:43Speaker 1: much TV and too many things to do. Anyway, we
- 3:45Speaker 1: did it, and now you've got a whole new list
- 3:47Speaker 1: of favorites.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Well, and we can thank our staff for that because
- 3:51Speaker 2: they actually introduced us to a couple that have now
- 3:53Speaker 2: become literally my top three.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Okay, so number one, I'm.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Gonna say Klaus.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Mister Klaus, you have a gift you were meant from
- 4:04Speaker 3: making toys.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah, okay, so that's a Netflix special. You know, the.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Background behind Klaus was that because it was such an
- 4:13Speaker 2: untraditional story, DreamWorks and Disney wouldn't pick it.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Up, right, So for Netflix, good, Netflix has got an
- 4:20Speaker 1: unlimited budget. Let's do whatever we want.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And I just love the take on the Christmas story
- 4:25Speaker 2: that this movie portrays.
- 4:26Speaker 1: So for those of you who haven't seen it, there's
- 4:28Speaker 1: a boy who's being raised by a very rich dad.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Rich Dad's very cranky at the boy. It's a cartoon,
- 4:32Speaker 1: by the way, because he's entitled and selfish and rich
- 4:36Speaker 1: dad owns like the postal system in their country, so
- 4:39Speaker 1: he sends his son to the most far reaching outposts Samehrenberg.
- 4:45Speaker 2: It's labeled the saddest place on Earth, and you see
- 4:48Speaker 2: it in the depiction of the animation. Everything's just graay.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Hey, what do you guys think you're doing. This is Smirnsburg,
- 4:56Speaker 1: the unhappiest police on earth, and there are two warring
- 5:00Speaker 1: families who just hate each other. And there is no
- 5:02Speaker 1: postage service there like nobody actually, no one writes a letter.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Everybody hates each other. And it's the story of how
- 5:09Speaker 1: this young man, well, it's a coming of age and
- 5:13Speaker 1: it's a hero story. He saves the town. He becomes
- 5:16Speaker 1: a person who falls in love with the spirit of
- 5:18Speaker 1: Christmas and changes everything. It's a great movie.
- 5:21Speaker 2: My second one is going to be Arthur Christmas Phillel's
- 5:29Speaker 2: Jingle Jingle Jingle Time eighteen point one four second brows.
- 5:35Speaker 1: We've got a staff member, Elizabeth, who told us how
- 5:37Speaker 1: great Arthur Christmas was, and it was. It was an
- 5:40Speaker 1: absolute joy. I survive, I'll walk home, I'll get a boat,
- 5:48Speaker 1: but I am never getting back in that crazy flying
- 5:51Speaker 1: death trap ever again.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I just I loved it. Here's this kid, he's Santa Claus'
- 5:56Speaker 2: son and he just loves Christmas. But he gets the
- 6:00Speaker 2: way is it glutz everything? But he ended up actually
- 6:04Speaker 2: saving Christmas this time.
- 6:05Speaker 1: What's your third one?
- 6:06Speaker 2: It's actually Evelyn's favorite.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Cheese and Craigs. Oh is it Craigs as well? Elf?
- 6:13Speaker 3: Okay, people tomorrow morning to damn Santa's coming down?
- 6:19Speaker 1: Oh my god, Santa here, I know him.
- 6:24Speaker 2: So much fun. I probably would never ever have watched this.
- 6:28Speaker 2: It has Will farrellan I don't really like him very
- 6:30Speaker 2: much as an actor, and I probably wouldn't have put
- 6:34Speaker 2: it in as a kid's movie as a result of
- 6:36Speaker 2: him being in it.
- 6:38Speaker 1: He's absurd. He's absolutely ridiculously over the top absurd. You stink.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I think you're gonna have a good Christmas like beef
- 6:46Speaker 1: and cheese. You don't smell like Xander. Okay, that's what
- 6:54Speaker 1: makes it so delight so good. So are there any
- 6:58Speaker 1: other great kids Crew Smith's movies that you think we
- 7:01Speaker 1: should mention? Because that's only three. I said we were
- 7:02Speaker 1: going to do like our top five.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I don't think you can go past at Christmas movie
- 7:06Speaker 2: list without giving a mention to Home Alone.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I made my family disappear.
- 7:15Speaker 2: We all grew up with that movie, and it still
- 7:18Speaker 2: has to be on the top. I'd say top ten
- 7:22Speaker 2: movies ever.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Great slapstick comedy. And our children, even our teenagers, watch
- 7:27Speaker 1: that and laugh their heads off. Harry, how did you
- 7:31Speaker 1: take your shoes off? Why the hell you dressed like
- 7:34Speaker 1: a chicken? I'm on per you more, aunt, Come and
- 7:38Speaker 1: get me. You guys, give up or you're thirsty for more.
- 7:45Speaker 2: And the last one I'm going to mention would be
- 7:47Speaker 2: Santa Claus with Tim Allen.
- 7:49Speaker 1: What you put on a little wheat? A little weak?
- 7:52Speaker 1: Does this look like a little.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Weight to you?
- 7:54Speaker 1: We can fluctuate from you to year fluctuate. You make
- 7:58Speaker 1: it sound like I'm retaining water. I've been forty five
- 8:01Speaker 1: pounds in a week.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Here's this guy who single handedly destroys Christmas by interrupting
- 8:08Speaker 2: Santa as he's trying to go down a chimney and
- 8:10Speaker 2: he falls off.
- 8:11Speaker 1: The roof.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Her.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Santa or tim Ellen Santa okay, And so.
- 8:22Speaker 2: His son sees it all happenings. You have literally killed Christmas.
- 8:26Speaker 1: You've killed Sannah right, so much fun. After the break,
- 8:30Speaker 1: we're going to talk about a handful of other Christmas
- 8:33Speaker 1: movies that may or may not suit the whole family,
- 8:37Speaker 1: but you, as a parent might really enjoy. It's the
- 8:40Speaker 1: Happy Family's Podcast.
- 8:42Speaker 2: For a happier family. Try a Happy Families membership, because
- 8:46Speaker 2: a happy family doesn't just happen.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Details at happy families dot com dot au.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It's the Happy Family's podcast, the podcast for the type
- 8:54Speaker 2: or parent who just wants answers now and hopefully today.
- 8:57Speaker 2: We've given you a few options to keep the kids
- 9:01Speaker 2: occupied so you can do your centering.
- 9:04Speaker 1: If that's necessary. Wink quink, because you all know, because
- 9:08Speaker 1: you would have seen my Facebook post about that particular topic.
- 9:12Speaker 1: What's really going on?
- 9:12Speaker 2: Sandny tawpers come on?
- 9:14Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So there's a couple of movies that
- 9:16Speaker 1: we didn't mention that I think need an honorable recognition.
- 9:20Speaker 1: The first one is Christmas Chronicles of Snow Fall on.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Now.
- 9:32Speaker 1: You actually were putting it on your list and I said, ah,
- 9:33Speaker 1: you know it's not really that good. You're a trickster.
- 9:36Speaker 2: You just did it so you can have it on yours.
- 9:38Speaker 1: No, no, no, it's not what happened. What actually happened
- 9:40Speaker 1: was that we watched the We watched the trailer, and
- 9:43Speaker 1: I was like, oh, that is a really good movie.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I did enjoy that movie quite a lot. And of
- 9:47Speaker 1: course there are a couple of other movies that again
- 9:49Speaker 1: Christmas confession. Not only have I not seen The Santa Clause,
- 9:52Speaker 1: I haven't seen Bad Center, what about The Rain Deer?
- 9:55Speaker 1: Would you please shut up about Reindeer? And I haven't
- 9:57Speaker 1: seen The Holiday?
- 9:58Speaker 2: You're not iris, or if you are, I'm much stronger
- 10:02Speaker 2: than I realized.
- 10:03Speaker 1: But everybody says that those must watch grown up movies
- 10:07Speaker 1: for Christmas, So I.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Guess we're going to have a few movie nights then.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I still don't know if I want to watch them,
- 10:12Speaker 1: to be honest, but everyone's been saying, you've got to
- 10:14Speaker 1: talk about those movies. They're amazing. So we've talked about
- 10:16Speaker 1: them even though we haven't seen them. Is that cheating?
- 10:18Speaker 2: That's so cheating. Seriously, I hope you don't get in trouble.
- 10:22Speaker 2: You don't even know what's in them.
- 10:24Speaker 1: On top of that, though, I think we've got to acknowledge, well,
- 10:26Speaker 1: Christmas is not a time of faith for everybody. There
- 10:30Speaker 1: are a lot of people who listen to the podcast,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and there are millions upon millions, tens of millions of
- 10:34Speaker 1: people around the world who do have a religious faith.
- 10:36Speaker 1: And there are some really wonderful, religiously oriented, faith producing,
- 10:40Speaker 1: faith promoting movies about the Nativity. Different churches have them.
- 10:44Speaker 1: They're available online, they're often free, and will link to
- 10:47Speaker 1: a couple of those in our show notes for those
- 10:50Speaker 1: who are interested in some nice Nativity movies and things
- 10:53Speaker 1: that will help you to have the actual Christmas story.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Sands Santa, no Sander in these ones instead the religious
- 11:02Speaker 1: foundations of where Christmas comes from. And I think that
- 11:05Speaker 1: sometimes it's nice to just pause and say this is meaningful,
- 11:08Speaker 1: even if it's not your religious faith. To talk to
- 11:10Speaker 1: the kids about what the background is. Find one of
- 11:11Speaker 1: the short ones, the ten or twenty minute ones that
- 11:14Speaker 1: just step through it. I think that that can help
- 11:15Speaker 1: us to appreciate what Christmas is all about for millions
- 11:20Speaker 1: and millions of people around the world. We really hope
- 11:22Speaker 1: that you've enjoyed the Happy Families podcast today and that
- 11:24Speaker 1: it's given you a little bit of inspiration or just

- 11:34Speaker 1: and your family to goodness and kindness and service and
- 11:39Speaker 1: fun for this Christmas. The Happy Families podcast is produced
